About this Episode

An analysis of the WWE Network special documenting a year in the career of Kevin Owens. We explore the behind-the-scenes footage from SummerSlam 2016 to SummerSlam 2017, the humanizing moments shared between superstars like Owens and Finn Balor, and the surprising glimpses of Vince McMahon's involvement in daily operations. We also reflect on the value of documentary-style production in professional wrestling and discuss which other wrestlers we would like to see featured in future installments.

I'm so obsessed with being a WWE superstar. I

can't shake it. It's just my passion. It's where

I belong. Kevin Owens is a guy who's always had

an amazing amount of passion and an uncanny physical

ability. And even though he doesn't look like

your prototypical WWE superstar, KO immediately

made a huge impact when he finally made it to

WWE. But it was a recent 12 month stretch that

proved to be the most defining of his entire

career. on our year -long journey with Kevin

Owens. An intimate, all -axis look inside the

everyday challenges, triumphs, and failures of

a WWE superstar, one day at a time. This is WWE

365, Kevin Owens. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome

to the Podcast Arena. Coming to the ring at this

time This edition of WWE 365 chronicles the career

of Kevin Owens from SummerSlam 2016 to SummerSlam

2017, as told by Kevin Owens himself. If I were

to describe the last 12 months of my career with

one word, it would be extreme, extreme highs.

and extreme lows, as far as how I felt as a performer.

But it's been quite a ride. I'm kind of never

happy with my career. I always need more. I always

need bigger, and I always need to go higher.

I've had an amazing run at WWE. I came in with

John Cena, and right after that I won the Intercontinental

title. is the Kevin Owens show. I feel like I'm

going like this. I'm on my way to what I want,

which is to be a top superstar in WWE. Hello

and welcome to Mayhem Mikes. This is episode

31 here on the E -Cast Radio Network and This

Week in Geek. I'm, of course, TFG1 Mike, joining

me as always, Ryan, the Unavailable Mark Lee.

Hello, sir. Hello. Yay. Regular episodes. Recorded

in times. No, I know. It's fine. Life happens.

We've had a lot this this show in particular

has had a lot of derailments I Wasn't even an

original host But no, we have fun every time

we do one of these and you know I should have

said in episode 30 folks Mike Dodd will be back

for WrestleMania this year as well all 14 hours

honestly I okay I am not in my entire lifetime

I've drank alcohol maybe six times in my 38 years

on this planet I'm not a drinker at all just

it's not my thing don't really care for the taste

of any alcohol but honestly I almost want a drunk

podcast, WrestleMania. I want to watch it drunk.

I want to record it drunk. We could build the

Mayhem Lakes WrestleMania drinking game. Every

time Cole pitches an app or something that has

nothing to do with anything on screen, take a

drink. Anytime Booker T comes back and says something

that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever, take

a drink. because it's it's full coach and graves

now that's why i said come back comes back though

because he'll be on the free show i bet they

always bring some people back thank god i don't

watch the free show it's so interesting whatever

anyway i just refuse but it's one of those things

where like i said it in was it the may young

episode yeah it was the may young episode um

or it might have yeah It was either the May Young

episode or the Raw 25th anniversary episode thing

that we did. It was one or both or whatever.

I said, oh, WrestleMania was seven hours long

last year. Too long, too long. I said, I bet

this year it's gonna be eight or nine hours.

It's like, just start taking your bets, folks,

on how long WrestleMania's gonna be. This counts

the pre -show. All of the before -hands. commentator

special things that they do the the event itself

and then whatever other like talking smack or

Raw talk or whatever the after show things it's

like No, just give us three and a half four hours

So let's talk about something today that could

be a really good free show Because honestly it

gets gotten me excited to watch more of his career

and that is the Kevin Owens 365. Yes on the WWE

Network The 365 special they need to do more.

It's basically yes They took one year of a superstars

career and chronicle it in 43 minutes and change

So they basically take 365 days from Kevin Owens

case. It's summer slam 2016 to summer slam 2017

Yeah, although they went a little bit after too

because of course he had just started the big

program with Vince and Shane and everything but

yeah Yeah, and they've done a few of these so

there's Bunch of WWE 24s as well, which are also

fantastic chronicling stuff like Kurt angles

return the women's division and just Yeah, these

are all really well done and in this case they

got Michael Rappaport to do a lot of the work

on this. Yeah, I did the narration and Don't

know thought he did an alright job, but the production

value of everything else like how this was put

together It's brilliantly done and I guess this

team is working with the WWE pretty much full

-time now, which is great because they did a

terrific job with this and Yeah, I mean so I

mean they started so where we find Owens at the

start is in an opening match for SummerSlam 2016

against Enzo and Cass. And a year later, Owens

will be, you know, fighting AJ and he'll have

had the universal title and this chronicles all

of that. And this was really good and interesting

because I mean, they we got to see, first of

all, Owens is So this is all behind the scenes.

But I mean, we got to see Owens and his reaction

to Finn Balor getting injured, which would end

up being a huge deal for Owens because he ended

up with the universal title because of that.

Yeah. But I mean, you could definitely see how,

you know, he was broken up. He was because this

was his friend. Yeah. What I like about this,

I like about is these inside looks into the athletes.

Basically in my mind negates anybody that says

oh It's just acting or oh, it's just this it's

just that oh, it's fake. It's no Watch this special

see what this guy goes through like I didn't

even like Okay, we can see and say on storyline

on the shows like oh these guys are buddy buddy

or oh these guys are buddy buddy and Like you

don't see how they are with each other on the

shows because they're built up storylines they're

characters on the show they're not them's like

the whole scene i think it was when they were

going to mania when he was in the car and he

tells the driver oh pull up a little bit because

that's aj and all of them and like him and aj

are going back like just talking yeah over the

car thing oh basically right next to each other

on a freeway or whatever highway whatever And

just seeing Kevin Owens, just in plain clothes,

sitting in a chair, talking about how he feels

and how his journey has been. I didn't even know

he and Finn were friends. I figured all of these

people respect each other in real life, but you

never know who the friends are. I figure him

and Sammy are actually friends. I know that.

Yeah, and he and Sammy are close friends. Yeah,

and that's the thing. Seeing the human moments

in this was the best part. sort of the worst

part too because i mean the biggest moment of

the entire thing of course is after you know

he was after the match with uh yeah aj getting

told by vince you know if if he asks him you

know uh are we good and vince says no and i mean

Yeah, and you could and you could see Owens's

shoulders and like physically and he was broken

up about it and You saw after every match even

though this guy is like consistently one of their

best performers after every match after that

how broken up he was and then finally He didn't

feel good again until after After the match Well,

there was that but I mean after the match with

Where he broke out the it was super card that

was it and he broke out the stunner and Steve

Austin texted him and said like Great job. I

loved the match and That made him feel great

again. That was the first time like since then

he felt Like it's interesting to see these people

go through the same things Lot of us do every

day. He felt bad because his boss didn't like

what he was doing and it just it tore him up

and he didn't understand what was wrong and It

happens to everybody and it was neat to see a

lot of that and yeah It's neat to see the relationships

with you know, he and fit him, you know urging

Finn back as he's training and that kind of thing

and the fact that Owens yeah he wasn't real happy

about giving the belt to Goldberg just so it

could be a prop in the match with Lesnar so and

it's and it's weird to watch so I mean I think

I when I think I reviewed some of the Owens and

AJ matches pretty positively it was almost weird

to see how upset he was after them and he mentions

it that he's just never satisfied so I don't

think anybody and anything they do is ever fully

satisfied. You're always self -analyzing yourself.

You're always looking back on things. You're

always wondering if, you know, was that the best

you could have done with what you were given

or what you had to work with kind of a thing.

I mean, even in podcasting, we had somebody comment

on our GCRN network updates episode saying, oh,

another, you know, GCRN... quality thing of somebody

not doing this or somebody doing, you know, somebody

not muting the microphone or somebody coughing

or somebody whatever. Oh, sorry. Funny. Funny

guy. That's right. You know, so it's like, oh,

you know, and, you know, he responded like, you

know, thanks for letting us know. you know we're

trying our best it's it's more of an equipment

thing than it's something you know it's more

of a software issue than something that we can

fully control during the recording kind of you

know so it it also is one of those things in

everyday life like i said you know you you self

-analyze you self -doubt yourself whatever and

just see what i love about these and again i

hope they do these in the future like i would

have loved and i don't think they can do this

now I would have loved to see one specifically

on Naomi or her chase for the championship that

she went through. And then the subsequent injury

after everything too. I would love to see a 365

on that. I don't think they can do that because

I don't know. They did Baller which is a very

similar story too though. I mean he finally made

it to the top and it was just heartbreaking that

oh you know you're done. The most interesting

thing I kind of got out of the Owens 365 is Owens

himself. But the secondary thing is you mention

the moment where he asks Vince, was that what

you got? And Vince is like, no, it isn't. Like

you were saying, just seeing Kevin's shoulders

slump. But even I felt super uncomfortable when

he's just standing there and Vince isn't even

paying attention to him anymore. Oh, yeah. Because

Vince is just paying. This is the thing I wanted

to bring up. This is the not necessarily the

most important thing But the one of the important

things I wanted to bring up about talking about

this first WWE Network special that we're gonna

cover here We always say oh we haven't seen Vince

on TV in a while We haven't seen Vince this we

haven't seen Vince that I mean I get it He's

the chairman I never expected the guy to be at

home watching But the fact that within this year

of 2016 2017 that he is back in the back Doing

the the videography stuff and watching yeah,

he's that like that's true, too Like I did expect

the chairman of the board I did not expect the

guy that owns the company the guy that built

up the company just be in the back It was 70

years old I did not expect that at all, like,

you know, Kevin's talking about, oh, I went and

saw Vince, or I went and did this and went, you

went and saw Vince? You went to his home? And

then they show Vince in the, like, home. Oh,

okay, so he's paying attention to his baby still,

even though Stephanie and Shane are running it.

I don't think 2016, 2017, at the Superstition,

I don't remember, anyway. But like that was the

most shocking thing to me not related to Kevin

Owens directly about this special about showing

the behind -the -scenes stuff of a Look, Vince

McMahon is there and people are going back and

asking him. Is that what the company needed?

Is that what the company wanted? That was really

cool. But yeah, seeing Owens championship, his

universal championship win Seeing how like I'm

pretty sure I've seen how the belts are made

in the past But like seeing them put on the ko

and the thing and like that was really cool Yeah

This is just fun to see and it's weird too or

I understand why they're hesitant to do stuff

like this to just because If you watch this even

if you don't like Kevin Owens, and you don't

like the character It's hard to come away not

kind of pulling for the guy because man. He's

so human and Yeah, we get to see a little bit

of his family life and that kind of thing or

month You know you've said it before it reminds

us that the all these people are human They have

all the same issues we do but man. He just comes

across as a really good guy in this and i mean

you can see how torn up he is for his friend

when he's injured and all this other stuff and

just i don't know those this was really good

i've loved these behind the scenes ones or these

behind the scenes episodes that they've done

like i said the 24 but yeah this one might have

been my favorite it's just really well put together

It was hard to imagine I would even be WWE Champion,

let alone Universal Champion. And all I know

is I really wanna make this as memorable as I

can. Whenever this title reign is over, however

long it lasts, I really hope people look back

on it as Kevin Owens made the title mean as much

as he could. I was really excited at the idea

of making the title mean something. My best friend

and the longest reigning WWE Universal Champion

in history. Seven days, yeah. People need to

care about it. And that was my job to make people

care about it. You just have to accept it and

for now at least it's the Kevin Owens show. I

proved that I should have been the number one

pick for Raw. I proved that I am the main event

and I proved that I am the man. When people that

aren't really familiar with WWE hear WWE, they

know what Raw is. I'm the face of that show now.

It helped me feel like the top guy I've wanted

to feel like. And it's one of those things where,

like I've been saying this whole time in this

podcast, like I want to see more of these. It

was 43. Yeah, I looked it up before we started

and then you told me exactly how long it was

Anyway, but I mean they're 43 minutes like they're

nice like little self -contained Yeah, I wouldn't

have minded if this lasted much longer because

I remember when it finished I thought like oh

it's already over Because it doesn't it doesn't

feel like you're spending any time or anything.

It's just so nice It goes from whatever event,

like pay -per -view day to the next Raw or the

next Smackdown or whatever. That's how the days

count on this, I noticed. There is some time

that it goes faster. It went from day 177 to

day 197, so it went 20 days ahead. But most of

the time when it was going throughout the 365

days, it was like... three or four days at a

time that they were highlighting which is really

cool because you get to see the traveling part

you get to see kind of a we didn't i don't think

we saw his wife or his children which is fine

they don't need to be there i mean obviously

he's married he has a family life he has that's

fine that's not the point of this but we see

his yeah but we see their effect on him because

he's pretty much he pretty much constantly and

that's part of his character too that He's doing

this for you and his wife and kids and He's doing

it for his wife and kids more than Heath Slater

ever could yeah, basically, but I mean he really

is so yeah, it's just a I don't know. This is

just a really good story and I would like to

see more so Question, which which wrestler would

you most want to see them do one on? Yeah, that's

tough. I kind of want to see I kind of want to

see because I don't know if you watched it but

AJ's episode with Stone Cold AJ's got a lot of

crazy stories like it took him a long time to

get to WWE and he's had a pretty nuts Work or

pretty nuts like they're pretty nuts workload

and he's got a crazy past and everything else

Stonefall podcast episode, I have not watched

any of the stuff. The last one I saw was I think

the deep one and that was a while ago. I kind

of want to see, of course this isn't going to

surprise you at all and it probably won't surprise

the listeners, but I want to see the rise, fall,

and reformation of the shield. Yeah, actually

that would be fun or just something I don't I

don't know if they filmed this but it would be

interesting to see the Just sort of a breakdown

of them afterwards and then how they they probably

felt a lot of the same of what Owens did When

they broke up because you wonder like oh am I

gonna be you know, can I do this on my own? We

were a big successful tag team, but Where do

I go now? I'm also going to shock the hell out

of everybody when I say this. I almost want to

see behind the scenes for the new day. I almost

want to see like how each of those guys comes

up with ideas to do with whatever. I know you

said Woods has his podcast thing and his video

game thing and whatever else. I don't know what

Copic has. I don't know what Big E has, but like...

As much as in the last three years how negative

I've been about the new day just the characters

on the shows not the people in general, but like

Like I almost want to see that for singles people

Maybe some of the women looking like a journey

like I mentioned earlier a journey for Naomi

kind of a thing Don't know there's a I Like him

I know there's some guys will probably never

see just to be Just to be on like Cena is super

super closed off about his home and family life

Like he does not like no, I know but he doesn't

like being on the Total Bellas or anything Like

he does not like that and he's been pretty public

about it. So I can't imagine them doing a lot

of behind -the -scenes stuff with him But like

when WWE used to do DVD stuff and they had the

John Cena special behind the scenes with DVD

or when they had the King Jerry the King Waller

DVD thing like I would like to see some of that

stuff hit the network Yeah Just because But yeah,

we've said it before and I'll say it again that

the network's worthwhile for stuff like this

The table for three stuff is also enjoyable Not

always. Yeah right along not always a must watch

but I mean they're all enjoyable and they're

all kind of like good bonuses to have if You're

already a big enough fan that you want to watch

NXT and the pay -per -views As well as 205 live

than it's already there i've always maintained

i really think they should make a deal and i

know the networks would be annoyed about this

but raw on smackdown should be there after they

air yeah they should just so you could break

it up and watch it whenever i really think that

would help but i don't think they're gonna i

don't think that's just like usa or Don't think

well, it's only USA, but I don't think it's just

USA for raw and smackdown like I think it's more

so also Vince wanting that that TV presence that

television I know but I mean you have it on TV

and then maybe a day or two later it pops up

on the streaming On the site, but I just yeah,

I don't think that's gonna happen either because

the other The other the networks are just the

networks are not gonna be at wouldn't be happy

about it. So no well So folks we're about We're

about a week away from elimination chamber and

then after that is fast lane on March 11, so

The next time you're going to hear from us will

be when we do 24 on WrestleMania. I believe that's

the next episode. No, that's the episode before

WrestleMania, dumbass. Yeah, I know, right? I'm

so professional. Elimination Chamber and Fastlane

will probably be mid -March, and then the 24

WrestleMania thing will be right before the week

before WrestleMania episode, so... Yeah, you're

gonna get more mayhem mics throughout March and

April and now that they're going back to regular

one pay -per -view a month Maybe we'll do two

episodes a month or maybe we'll do four. I don't

know It's like it's probably gonna be one pay

-per -view episode like backlash in May and then

two or three network special things so If you

want zero episodes send the email to Mike Dodd

at this week in geek So yeah And hey Royal Rumble

has already been announced for 2019 January 27

They always do that though. So do we want to

attribute a Rating to this because I would immediately

give it five stars. I think it was really well

It was entertaining, it's shortish, it's enjoyable,

and it was just really well put together. At

43 minutes or so, like you said, you wish it

was longer. But if this was on USA, this would

be a 60 -minute program. Yeah, also always leave

them wanting more. Well, yeah, that too. Yeah,

I'm going to give it a 5. I wasn't really going

to rate these things, but... Yeah, I mean, an

inside look into the life of Kevin Owens as a

WWE superstar, absolutely. Yeah, so five. Join

us next time, folks, when we talk about Elimination

Chamber and Fastlane. Where can the Beat will

find you online, sir? At Night Beat on Twitter.

At Night Beat on Twitter? At Night Beat on Twitter.

My phone's ringing, so. Stop that. I am at TF2

and Mike on Twitter. You can follow at Geekcast

Radio Network and at This Week in Geek for the

respective networks there. Like I said, join

us next time for the next episode, episode 32

here on Mayhem Mikes on the Geekcast Radio Network

and This Week in Geek. We will catch you next

time, folks. Take us out, Jericho. You just made

the list! What's it like in Montreal now? It's

pretty cold. Is there snow, even? Yeah. Yeah,

when I left on, uh... Actually, it was freezing

rain all day, and my wife, like, we lost power

at the house. Oh, wow. That's great. Nearly four

months into his title reign, KO was riding high.

And sharing the good times with a childhood idol

made things even sweeter. When you made your

debut, I didn't know it was you. Oh, really?

I just knew something was gonna happen. And then

when the Jericho flashed on the Tron... I went,

hey, but it aired at midnight in Canada. It didn't

air live. Oh. I woke up my dad. He was real upset.

Yeah, man. It's pretty wild to think about, dude.

Now we're sitting in a car telling stories and

stuff. It's crazy, right? It is crazy. Like I

said, at the time, I was a little too in my own

head to appreciate the fact that I was getting

to team with Chris Jericho at SummerSlam. but

I had teamed with Chris before SummerSlam. In

April, we did a random tag team match on SmackDown,

and we ended up having a great time. It was kind

of playing off of each other. I remember, like,

he's coming. He's a big dude. I locked my legs.

I crouched. And I was just like, brr. And then

you said, like, I remember you said, you're the

goat. I'm the donkey. You called me the donkey.

So you're the goat. You're like, you're the donkey.

And it took you a second. Yeah, fine, whatever.

I came back to Vince Howling. You just made the

list! All clear.
