About this Episode

With live crowds absent due to the coronavirus, the panel discusses the implications for WWE Raw and SmackDown broadcasts. The discussion covers the difficulties performers face when working without an audience, Triple H's surprising turn on commentary, and the general decline in quality that led the hosts to cancel their WWE Network subscriptions. They also touch on the ongoing rivalry between AEW and WWE, the rise of the NWA, and how wrestling's reliance on nostalgia acts fails to capture new viewers.

coming to the ring at this time First representing

this Check out Hello and welcome to maya Mike's

this is episode 53 and Man, it's quiet in here

Good lord. Where did the audience go? Oh my god.

They left the WWE. Holy crap I'm of course TF2

and Mike joining me is Ryan the uneven flow Merkley.

Hello, sir I knew you couldn't have been to our

audience because we don't have one Well when

you never have one you can't get one and you

can't get rid of them if you don't have them

Also joining us for the first time in a long

time is Mike the Birdman Dodd That's right coming

out of set my retirement much like the Undertaker.

You only bring me out for big events Yeah, that's

right. I'm here. I'm back. What the fuck did

I just watch? Well, apparently it's all Michelle

McCool's fault so we also have What the hell

are we calling you this time? I don't know. I

think the last time it was white heat or something.

Probably. Wednesday's cousin. We'll go with that.

Wednesday's cousin. It is Mr. Alex Ricci. Hello,

sir. Hello, hello. Yes, and we're here because

a lot of stuff has happened since July 8th of

2019 which was the last episode we released here

on mayhem mics for key cast radio in this week

in geek Really? Holy crap. Yeah We did the we

did sort of a crossover event which like the

top 100 wrestlers that took Okay, yeah a few

months, but that other than that. There's been

nothing Yeah, no, I mean the last actual episode

of this show was July 8th of last year because

I looked at it before we did the recording today.

And yes, the top 100 wrestlers was a crossover

between the networks and everything else. But,

uh, but yeah, as far as actually talking full

on wrestling non -countdown stuff, it's been

just over just under a year. Basically most of

us canceled all of our subscriptions to the WWE

network. Yeah, pretty much. And I was surprised

I actually did that. I think I kept, I kept subscribing

out of a misguided sense of loyalty. And then

I came to the realization, this is crap. Well,

I remember telling you, you're like, Oh man,

all these subscription things are costing money.

I'm like, dude, why don't you just cancel the

WWE network and get that, uh, and use that money

to get Disney. And I did, and I've been enjoying

Disney a hell of a lot more than I ever did this

thing. Um, it sucks too. I mean, I used to love

enjoying, uh, the monthly pay per views and I'd

watch some of the more classic content. I mean,

obviously, as I've said on the show before it's

been a while, so I'll refresh your memories.

I love that documentary series they did on the

Monday night wars. I think that's some of the

best documentary work I've seen in a really long

time. but I just wasn't getting much value out

of it other than the monthly pay -per -view and

me and Blair would be, would slog through these

matches. And we're like, who the hell are these

people? What's going on? Cause we stopped watching

Ron smack down a long time ago because it would

be endless talking commercials and shit promos.

I'd have to talk to Alex and he'd give me the

five minute recap thinking, Oh, so I, instead

of watching for three hours, you recapped it

in five minutes. And I just became so disillusioned

with it. That's because a three -hour show of

Raw, when you cut out the commercials and cut

out all the junk, you end up with about 10 minutes

of actual footage that's worth watching. Yeah,

it was garbage. The last time I watched Raw and

SmackDown was maybe, maybe September of last

year, up until this past week. So Friday the

13th. Here in March 2020 and Monday the 16th

316 day. They didn't plan that at all. Did they?

Was the first ever Smackdown live which is now

on Fox and it's back on Fridays folks. So yay

Audienceless and Monday Night Raw audience less

because the coronavirus has Taken over the world

Yeah. Pretty much. And it's going to dominate

the news cycle for the foreseeable future. So

strap in folks. I imagine WWE actually, if there

is any silver lining to this God -forsaken cloud

or this dystopian hellscape we currently find

ourselves in, I wonder if this will push network

subscriptions back up. Maybe. You never know.

So apparently they've taken a pretty severe hit,

and part of the reason is lack of original content,

which has improved somewhat. So you mentioned

the Monday Night War documentary. The current

one in the Attitude era is actually pretty good.

But they're doing a lot of revisionist history

on it. Oh yeah, but they did it during the Monday

Night War as well. But I've read some... They

dedicated an episode of the Monday Night Order

to DX who were really not a factor at all in

it. And doing some of the same stuff they did

then with the Attitude Era, but it's been pretty

solid. Well, the Attitude Era one, or the Ruthless

Regression one, I noticed, I watched the first

episode and went, they basically rewrote OVW

history. Yes. So... It's not even remotely what

it's out there and it's not a case of like, Oh,

this isn't stuff that was talked about. If you

listen to basically any podcast from any wrestler

that was around that time, you can piece together

that it's a completely different story. Um, and

they're trying to W stuff, but the on air stuff,

I don't know. It's reasonably well done in terms

of, again, it's the same sort of revisionism.

The WWE is great. Yeah, what's worth watching

is if you really want to watch all that kind

of stuff is I believe Was a dark side of the

ring is That vice documentary series. I hear

cat purring But yeah, there's that vice it had

a I think of six or seven episode documentary

series last summer. Yes. And the, it's coming

back now and they're going to be covering, um,

the, uh, Benoit case, basically all the most

controversial ones. And I believe, I think the

Benoit one's a two -parter. One of them - I don't

understand that. Uh, because they're, what they're

doing for the first time ever, everything that

has been talked about with any of these controversial

things with WWE has always been through the WWE's

lens. So this is going to be from independent

researchers. So, um, they're also doing brawl

for all, um, a few other incidents. Uh, it'd

be interesting to see. I know that, uh, uh, the

WWE had put a ban on anybody talking to the producers

advice about anything involved with it. So, so

the only people that are allowed to show up are

people that are not signed to them. So you're

going to get people that are at, uh, AEW or people

like Cornette who've been fired from everybody.

So, um, yeah, yeah. Anyway, not somebody I would

necessarily want talking about this point. Say

what you will. He's entertaining, but say what

you will. The dude does have, if you're looking

for just pure facts, the dude probably has the

largest archive outside of a museum. So he does,

but he's also as a tendency to revise history.

Yeah. So as long as, as long as they're coming

to him as like. as a factual witness, like, here,

I'll pull up the documentation of here's where

we were that week, here's what was happening.

If they're looking for something like that, the

dude has journals on everything. If they're looking

for... If he tells a story, I will sit there

with the popcorn. But he might be the last bastion

of hope for people in Kentucky that actually

are against Trump. Which has always been so funny

about him, but... Well, there aren't... having

lived in that state for 25 years, sadly that

state is very red. It's not good. So, yeah. But

yeah, regardless. There is also the state that

came out this week and said that they don't have

coronavirus problems because quote We don't have

any Chinese people that live in this state Was

that Kentucky I could have sworn that was some

other state that was Kentucky anyway So all of

sports is shut down All of sports the Kentucky

Derby has been postponed till August MLB NBA.

Well, we don't know about NFL because that season

isn't anywhere near this NHL The CFL is going

to be delayed the XFL shut down for the season

And yeah any events the Boston Marathon The in

all likelihood I'd be amazed if the Olympic Olympics

goes off on time Yeah, well and yet here we are

with Vince McMahon still doing what they've been

doing except to an empty arena. Yeah, so let's

Let's start with layout something too. Just in

general. So since we last broadcasts AEW started

up and has been Overall very good. There's definitely

been some missteps especially around the beginning

but overall it's been very good and it's been

a really good sort of alternate and to me at

its best 50 % of the show is really good 96 to

97 early 98 WCW and the other half is 2001 WCW

So it's got good and bad, but overall it's good

and overall it's been good for the industry as

a whole in attempts to push things forward. Having

said all that, everything going on now has kind

of thrown everything out of whack. Even AEW,

it was better than NXT this week because NXT

ended up just being a clip show for whatever

reason. They're feeling the pinch, but at least

they're seemingly paying people. So apparently

WWE is not paying Many of the performers That's

because their contracts are still yeah, they're

contract workers or they're considered contract

workers So Vince can just not pay them if they're

not on TV and there's no live shows or anything

for obvious reasons Not to mention the fact that

they were doing terrible at the gate anyway Yeah,

whereas with AEW, they are still contract workers,

which is why they don't have to provide healthcare

except to, I guess, the box and anybody that's

an EVP, because then they get part of the corporate

plan. But for them, their contracts state that

it's an independent contract for a salary versus...

Yeah, so Tony Khan is still paying them, which

is an important distinction. One other, one promotion

I like to bring up since you guys are mentioning

AEW. I'm the only one here. Am I the only one

here watching NWA? Oh, me, me, me, me, me. Because

that show is fucking fantastic. I love Billy

Corgan. It's like what, basically when we got

a taste of the parody of 80s studio wrestling

with - That Southpaw, whatever, right? Yeah.

And then they're like, well, let's just actually

- Let's pretend that it's 1988 still and do a

show like that. Yeah. That show is gloriously

stupid. I love it because it is slow, so low

production value. Plus they brought back, uh,

Damien Sandow. I forget what his character's

called. Um, but I watched it for like the first

six weeks. I really need to go back and rewatch

your thing. Plus they air it live on YouTube

every week. That is impressive. Which also funny

thing is out of all these shows, out of every

single one. uh, the lowest budget show or what

should be the lowest budget show with NWA is

the only one actually filmed in 4k and broadcast

in 4k. Wow. That's crazy. So like they have really

high it's like what if you took an indie show

and then just happen to give them a lot more

budget to make it look good and have it be produced

by people that used to work at WCW and TNA and

I'm not talking TNA now. We're talking TNA like

05 to 08 when they were trying to actually spend

money. Wow. So Smackdown. Oh my God. First of

all, as much as I do like him as whatever he

is, Triple H does not need to be on commentary.

He's kind of hilarious on commentary. I thought

he was the most entertaining part of it. Yeah,

so and also to be fair Just before we start to

I will mention this was like thrown together

pretty much last minute. So Yeah, like think

about it he spent the entire well He was supposed

to only be on the first segment before the first

commercial and they said they were gonna have

at the beginning Other guests hosts. Well, apparently

they checked social media and got so much good

praise that he stayed on for the rest of the

show Um, cause he was funny in a scenario where

just, yeah, nothing was working. Cause that bit

with, with him on the camera did not seem rehearsed.

Cause it seemed like Michael Cole was visibly

like, Hunter, what are you doing? And he's just

fucking with them. Especially when like he spends

the, the first 15 minutes pretending to be Vince

McMahon on commentary in the mid nineties. And

then he spends another segment. making fun of

Cole the entire time, calling every single move

vintage. And then covering, he basically pretended

at one point to be every other caller commentator

they've ever had except for Taz and JR because

they work for another company. That's right.

Not to mention he mocked the online reports and

some of that stuff and just he was entertaining.

I enjoyed it. I wouldn't want to hear him every

week or anything. Just I thought it worked for

this and it improved. It improved a. I don't

think this show was terrible. It wasn't bad for

what they had to throw together. Yeah, it was

better than raw. They kind of open the show with

some of the weaker people that could do promos,

which... That was Sasha Banks and Bailey, right?

Yeah, and while they have charisma in the ring,

they are not natural talkers. They need a crowd

to play off of. Banks is good, but she feeds

off the crowd. Yeah, exactly. Which one of the

big things that I noticed about this week, I

mean, with Raw and SmackDown, is... That crowd

needs to be there because the performers need

that energy. As someone who spoke in front of

large crowds, that helps you perform. It gives

you that little extra push to break that barrier

between personable and being a superstar. And

these people are supposed to be WWE superstars

that larger than life personality here. Things

seem muted. I mean, some of the promos on raw,

like I thought. edges was pretty good because

that guy can actually act. Well, he spent the

other last like seven, eight years working on

actual TV shows where he had to perform for basically

nobody in front of a camera. And that's why he

come across as natural. But you have a lot of

people that come from the NXT or the developmental

system. They either started very, very briefly

in like a small town doing nothing or some of

them were just scouted and put directly into

the program. So they've only performed in front

of large crowds. A lot of it is you're waiting

for the crowd reaction too. I have noticed even

in Cody's speech before at the start of AEW,

you can kind of fill in the gaps where they would

expect, where there'd normally be some sort of

crowd reaction. And I think it's even worse for,

yeah, a lot of the WWE people who haven't really

done anything outside of wrestling promos. And

if you look at the ones that uh, did probably

the best, uh, even, you know, we'll probably

end up talking about AEW at another time, but

if you count them in there too, uh, the people

that did the best were either the veterans that

had started wrestling in the nineties or earlier

where they, you know, learned a different way

because they didn't push through a developmental

system or people that in some cases, um, until

last year or so before AEW, Only worked in front

of crowds of like five people in like, like nothing

areas. So they are used to dealing with really,

really small, uh, attendance and, and they're

not going to get as nervous, not having the crowd

around them. So WWE really trains you only to

be a certain way in front of a certain crowd.

Yep. Because they manipulate the crowd. Vince

manipulates that crowd so hard. It didn't even

funny. Yeah. Also to be fair in terms of the

smackdown v rock comparisons At least smackdown

had more than one actual wrestling match Yeah,

okay. Yeah. Yeah I just I felt really uncomfortable

in the beginning I don't know if it was because

I hadn't seen Sasha and Bailey in a while and

I've never really been a Bailey fan at all Because

they don't know what to do with her. They don't

know how to have her Create whatever character

she's gonna create whether they want her to be

good whether they want her to be bad I had to

stop it like five minutes in and just go do something

else and come back like I had to watch Smackdown

and spurts raw at least I could fast like after

Alex said Oh good majority of it as a recap of

or a Reshowing of the rumble and I'm like, okay,

whatever I can just skip that that part There

are elimination tape so after the initial match

to we got a lot of elimination chamber stuff

On smackdown as well summing it up. We got you

know, the Roman Reigns interview so Reigns is

Reigns is fighting Goldberg at WrestleMania,

which Well, they finally found a way to not have

the crowd boom when he wins So the thing with

WrestleMania and it's the same issue I have with

the Super Bowl and Anyone who's listen to the

show knows I'm an absolute die -hard football

not I adore football in all its forms I watched

every XFL game and long story short WrestleMania

is the Super Bowl for pro wrestling and so they

do stuff to bring in names and that's why you

end up with Goldberg having the belt on him at

the age of at least 52 if I remember right 52

or 53, somewhere around there. Yeah, and he can't

actually do a jackhammer anymore. He can do a

jackhammer to somebody who's young and can do

all their own core strength. He can't do a jackhammer

and force it on anybody anymore. Well, we haven't

seen it with... Hey, Bray isn't that old. But

he's not a light guy. No, anyway, he's like he's

like he's also Yeah, this is this is an AJ Styles

doing it or something, right? No, so anyway,

yeah joking aside so I There is nothing that

can drum up interest for me in that match the

issue is like they're definitely gonna be people

that hear that and Go like, Oh, I haven't seen

Goldberg in a while. I remember watching him

in the nineties. I'll do that and watch it for

that, which I don't know how many of those people

are left at this point because of who would want

to come back and watch it in terms of how much

attitude era uh, which I keep mixing up with

ruthless aggression, apparently. Anyway, how

much attitude era nostalgia is there at that

point in, or at this point anymore in terms of

people who are going to go, I remember watching

this. I'm going to go watch this now. Well, we

had, um, really the last two things was when

Sting came back because there was still, that

was Actually, that was right when they were having

an upswing, but when Sting came back, people

were still clamoring for that for years. Then

when Goldberg came back and then won in Toronto,

was that three years ago now? I think so. Yeah,

I was there. That would have been, I think, the

last. vestige of people's interest to see something

cool happen. And people weren't expecting it

to go the way it did. And it was sort of set

up because of how tired people were of the way

things were moving. So I guess there, but nobody

else like, here's the thing, other than Goldberg,

who else from the late nineties is young enough

in good enough shape to even do anything, even

as much as he is? Yeah, Edge, the Hardys, although

the Hardys, it's a question mark at this point.

Edge is a bit of a question mark. You know, Matt

can't do it. He's not working there anymore.

No, I know. True. Sorry, I thought you just meant

in general. Yeah, in general. But like somebody

who, you know, was a crazy madman. Steiner just

had a heart attack while filming for TNA and

he's 57. Shawn Michaels, maybe? I don't know.

I mean, I guess with him, he has an advantage.

You could do a handicap match and he could keep

one eye on one guy and one eye on another guy

on the other side of the ring. That's terrible.

I was worried that's where you were going to

go. I was hoping it was a reference to his tag

team with God, but... Well, I mean, sure. You

could say he has one eye on the enemy and one

eye on God, I guess, the whole time. But somebody,

Triple H, like you could have him come back,

but he always comes back for a man. He always

see that's the problem. He comes back and then

he gets injured. Yeah, that's the problem. He

like, don't get me wrong. I love the guy. I love

him for what he did back in the day, but. It's

just a huge joke now for Triple H to come back

because they're billing him as. the CFO as the

this as the that as the whatever as the authority

that Would it be like rocker Hogan is that the

only people you could really like Hogan and like

a tag team where he's like with a younger guy

that can do all the work Or do you have the rock

probably wouldn't do it. He makes too much money

there And they're losing too much money not having

him film stuff right now. Anyway, yeah, so But

having said all that like the underlying issue

That I wanted to get at was just the fact that

there's this belief that the attitude era represented

the wrestling audience when no, it was just the

peak wrestling audience. Every sport kind of

has its peak and that was it for pro wrestling.

It's not going to get back to that. And guys

like, I mean, Cornett somebody that's guilty

of this when he'll talk about like oh that we

had this audience yeah you did you really are

never gonna have that audience again though nascar

is a great example of it when you know nascar

hit its popularity about ten years or so ago

it's never been remotely close to that and it's

never going to get back to that either everything

seems to have this line of it reaches a peak

of popularity at some point and then it drops

the only one that for some reason doesn't and

i still can't figure this out and believe me

i've tried because for some places it was my

job but the nfl just keeps going up it's the

only one and anyone who thinks that or say like

the attitude area era which was really wrestling's

peak In terms of money that it could bring in,

in terms of audience and eyeballs watching it.

But anyone that thinks that they can achieve

those same ratings when the world has moved on,

not to mention distribution and everything has

moved on with digital distribution, streaming,

entire networks, et cetera, et cetera. It's not

going to happen anymore. It's not benefiting

anybody to bring back these nostalgia acts. And

that's what bugs me the most about WrestleMania

is they do it every year. And I made the Super

Bowl comparison because they do the same goddamn

thing. They bring in some frequently terrible.

This year's was actually surprisingly good act

to do a halftime show. It has nothing to do with

football. It completely disrupts the game. And

the players all, by the way, hate it because

it just It takes the wind out of your sails and

the break ends up being three times the normal

break in a game. And it just, it's just for the

spectacle and in the hopes of bringing in quote

unquote, the average viewer. I just don't think

it works or sorry, it works even less for pro

wrestling because the average viewer was, you

know, years ago at this point. Well, not to mention

WWE has had. They want the average viewer, but

they're not willing to spend money to get them

either. Have you seen the music that they're

using for these shows, the sponsors? They're

people that are nobodies and they're people that

aren't even ever getting famous. They're not

even, and when they get somebody to perform at

WrestleMania or perform at a place, it's like

either a wash up or somebody that was popular

two or three years ago. Like they're behind the

curve. Like I think there's that, but even in

the context of the actual wrestlers. They're

still behind the curve. I mean, it's something

that going forward, and I know Rhodes has addressed

this, AEW may face if they continue signing cast

offs. And I agree with what they've done so far.

They've signed guys who are misused or had potential

that was unused or flat out have potential with

their company. just the more you try to chase

that dragon that, oh yeah, we can get ratings

in the, you know, three point whatever's every

week. That's what Nitro used to do. No, you can't.

That's not going to happen again. Well, not to

mention, like you said, it's the erosion of the

cable audience and the way things are distributed,

but also even, you know, traditionally in the

deep South where wrestling was protected. You

don't have people being as gullible anymore as

to believe everything they see on TV or see in

person because the internet, regardless of if

you've been smartened up in quotes, the internet

has changed things where people just can easily

figure out if something is real or fake. Before

the internet, it was a lot easier to just believe

what you saw. Yeah, which is one of the ways

like I like how AW engages the internet audience

and how they use it and they know that you know

people aren't gonna they're not gonna be shocked

or surprised at certain things or People know

have some idea at least of the inner workings

that kind of thing And when they're bringing

WWE continues to pretend like there's no internet

Well, and if you look, when they do bring in

the old timers that, you know, are past their

prime, what are they doing? They're putting them

in as managers. So they are a familiar name.

And what they're doing is they're pairing them

with somebody that might have similar traits.

So the idea is they're planting the seeds of,

oh, this kid's going to be like so -and -so,

you know, eventually. The manager role is perfect

for them, but don't bring them back in the ring

and have them do, say, a plotting match. of three

different moves, i .e. what Goldberg and Reigns

is going to be. I don't want to see Aaron Anderson

face Tully Blanchard in the 10 minute match anymore.

No, we don't need Aaron versus Jake. And if they

do have an interaction, it should be like once

a year and Aaron does a spine buster and that's

it. Yeah, or DDP does the diamond cutter or like

stuff they've done has been, I feel like perfect.

So it's just, yeah. It bugs me that WWE just

continues to trot out the old nostalgia acts.

And then they wonder why, gee, nobody wants to

see this. It makes me wonder how long it's going

to be till they go down their Rolodex of numbers

and they end up calling Terry Funk out of retirement.

Hey, at least they stopped promoting DVDs. That's

actually true. I'm serious. Like, like the last

time I saw, uh, Uh, WWE DVD promo was maybe right

before Mike and I started this show back in 2015.

They still make them, but they only sell them.

I think at Amazon and, uh, Walmart, like they

don't even bother being anywhere else. Do they

not go through their official store anymore?

I think you can get them, but I think they're

buried in there. They're not like easy to find.

Yeah. Yeah. Probably they are on the official

WWE store and The thing is now that they have

the network, the app, their own streaming, they

can just put the stuff on there. Well, if they

were smart and they wanted to get people to subscribe

again, maybe include all the special features

that you include on the disks, because people

aren't buying your disks anymore, but they usually

included like an extra match or. Yeah. They would

include like some behind the scenes or they'd

give you the option to. Watching different commentary

tracks or they'd have you know other stuff because

they would end up recording afterwards like Like

an actual commentary where they're talking about

How or intersplice it in with people getting

prepared for the event sort of like they do on

that WWE 24 show the 24 -hour one Yeah, there's

things that could be doing but they're not making

enough content on their streaming service to

begin with let alone in the ring So, you know,

getting back into the show, there was what, was

there two or three matches maybe? So they started,

they opened with the tag team match that Mike

mentioned. They had Daniel Bryan versus Sotaro

next, furthering the Sami Zayn as Intercontinental

Champion, which by the way, long overdue, but

Kind of too little too late. Like they kind of

have ruined Zane already, which anyway, whatever

and then yeah, they had Jeff Hardy versus Baron

Corbin, which Well Corbin is Corbin's another

guy that holy cow does he need an audience or

else? Well, he's terrible anyway, but yeah, but

at least he He's good at people are making people

dislike him Yeah I don't think he's at the XPOC

heat level. I think he's just below that. He'll

get there eventually if they keep, you know,

running him into the ground and having him be

terrible and giving him promos against Rob Gronkowski.

Think about this. I think about this. Yesterday,

they closed the borders to non -essential travel

to the States. from Canada. How many of the people

from the Canadian roster, like Sammy, won't be

able to go to work? Yeah, it's... I think they're

already down there, so it's not an issue. I guess

as long as they're going to stay there. But if

they say they came home to visit, they're not

going back down. We live in a really, really

different world now, folks. Like I said, the

last episode of this podcast that we did was

episode 52, which was our first AEW episode.

And America's basically shut down. You can't

go to Social Security anymore. You can't go to

blah, blah, blah. I mean, yeah, the USPS is still

working. So I guess, yay, as long as the postal

service is still working, we're good. But everything

is essentially shut down in the United States

of America. If we're thinking about what Vince

could do to bring viewers in and bring hate to

a brand new heel, why don't they just dress somebody

up in toilet paper like the Yeti over again,

so he can be like the evil toilet paper hoarder?

Okay, so I gotta ask Mike when was besides the

stuff that we end up telling you to watch When

was the last time you actually watched a full?

WWE program whether that was raw smackdown or

whatever Alex when did I cancel my WWE subscription?

Oh my god I think it was like October and you

watched it was what event was it in October that

they ran? I'm not talking about thinking. No,

no, I think it was before that. No, you watch

that. I think it was summer slam that I said,

fuck this. Oh, you said you got, I think you

said you got like one hour, one or two hours

into the five or six hour summer slam. And you're

like, Oh my God, we fell asleep twice. Yeah,

that's it. And I just gave up like a man. Does

this ever fucking end? You didn't watch it then,

but I think you kept the subscription and then

you asked me, uh, what's the big deal with Hell

in a cell because I see exploding on Twitter

and I explained to you the the red light battle

of with the invincible glitching video game character

that wouldn't die And and then you're like, oh

god, that's it. You finally cancelled it because

you cancelled it right before Disney Plus came

out Yeah, because I just I just couldn't do it

anymore. That's the thing. I mean WWE pulled

me in in 2014 Right after CM Punk left after

the Royal Rumble, Daniel Bryan was just about

to do WrestleMania 30. And it was a great time

to jump in. It was exciting. The yes movement,

the taking over of raw. It was cool. It was goddamn

exciting. I remember cheering very, very loudly

when Daniel Bryan won the championship that year.

It was really hype. And then every year was diminishing

returns year and year again. And then last year,

I only kept the network out of this misguided

sense of loyalty. And then like I, like Alex

was just telling you, I fell asleep so many times

during summer slam. Like, why am I putting myself

through this and paying for it? Yeah, this, this

wasn't, I care about. Yeah. And you said it wasn't

like a case of you had been up for a long time

or anything. Like you were prepared to watch

and you're like, it bored you literally to sleep.

Yeah. Like I had snacks ready. We had like snacks.

We ordered a pizza. It was great. It was going

to be on event viewing, but then it just turned

into, Oh my God, please end or something happened.

Literally since, since the Goldberg win three

years ago, there has been a single pay -per -view

worth watching. And it was this Royal rumble.

That's it. There's literally been nothing they've

not and when I say pay -per -view I want to actually

include there hasn't been a single Piece of programming

that WWE has produced across any of its brands

really worth watching live except for that Yeah,

that's that's sad I Mean, I like I said, I mean

the last WWE thing that we did was right before

it was episode 51 where we talked about the Shield's

final chapter, because I always was a huge Shield

fan and whatever else. Before that, I don't even

remember the last pay -per -view Ryan and I covered,

because I just completely, I removed it. I can

still find it on Hulu, obviously, but I removed

Raw and SmackDown from my list in Hulu because

I just could not keep up with it anymore. And

for me, I've been watching since 2007, it's quite

literally the longest time that I have watched

WWE other than the fact that I watched it off

and on as a kid back in the eighties. I mean,

exactly. And then on top of that, you've got

NXT, which again, my opinion on it is it hasn't

been worth watching since. Two three years ago

when all the really good people from the roster

were moved up and then now like there's pockets

of good people there The show just for a show

that's supposed to be live on a major cable network

Why does it? Look worse than Ring of Honor or

something that which is done on the cheap like

it's just they're so cheap with the production

of the show It's in the same building every single

week you compare it to their competition. There's

no comparison you got people like Like Adam Cole

and those people there, which is great, but the

second that They move like if they eventually

move from NXT to another platform, you know,

Vince is gonna destroy any momentum they had

I think that's why a lot of them aren't going

to Yeah, well, but they'll go wherever they're

told to go under the contract, right? So yeah,

but some of them have said flat -out said they'll

just quit Like what I'm waiting for like I'm

not watching NXT and I will see highlights of

it here and there but I get feeling that like

Half of the really good people there are just

gonna end up on AEW They're they're too smart

to go to impact And I'll counter with in the

time frame you mentioned too they had the gargano

Giampa trifecta which I don't like gargano at

all Wow, all right. That's why I find him. He

doesn't have any Charisma or facial expressions.

He's creating the ring, but I have a hard time

connecting with him. Same thing with Bailey.

Bailey just feels like when she comes out that

she has to force it to show any emotion. She

has to fake it so hard. The Gargano Ciampa, the

first two portions of that feud were some of

the absolute best work in the last five, six

years or so. I mean, for example, pulling the

wedding ring off, spitting on it and throwing

into the crowd. That was fantastic. That is absolutely

brilliant EO work. Fair enough. And actually,

Champa is probably one of the best. Seriously,

they have some of the best talent. They're just,

for whatever reason, they're not hitting the

mainstream. I mean, it's the thing we've been

saying on this show for at least two years now.

again don't wish any ill will towards the person

but Vince needs to go away Vince needs to let

go of the reins but he won't because just like

me in most cases he's a control freak and he

wants every last word to be his and he won't

listen to go back and listen to the talk is Jericho

John Moxley episodes of Chris Jericho's podcast.

Oh my God, all of those stories about WWE and

Vince and how Vince wouldn't listen to people.

I mean, to be fair, there's a more recent example.

That is that the XFL's first season, and I mentioned

it earlier, was so much more successful than

the other one because Vince actually let people

who work in football and have worked in the sport,

run it instead of just running things himself

and deciding that he knows what's best when he

really does. And he's got the same issue with

WWE at this point that he is exceptionally out

of touch to be blunt. And he's still sure that

he knows what the kids want. I feel like every

episode is like the meme. Hello, fellow kids.

Yeah, you people can like they tried to bolster

themselves up by saying that Haman and Bischoff

were in control What was it great when they started?

the fall season Bischoff has gone like two episodes

in and And then it was cool. It was clear like

and Bischoff you got to take everything he says

same with Haman with a grain of salt because

you know, they're masters at making up their

own truth but one thing that made sense that

Dyshoff was saying when he made the rounds after

his, uh, uh, I guess non -disclosure had finished.

He showed up, WWE signed his contract, got there,

and then got the feeling from day one that, uh,

Vince wanted him there as a name to help negotiate

the deal with Fox. And that was it. But he was

brought, he was brought in for, you know, under

false pretenses that, you know, Vince had no

intention of him ever actually controlling how

to present. smack down, but that the Fox executives

wanted somebody who had had successful experience

with a large corporation navigating the corporate

landscape of that. Whereas Vince has basically,

with a few stints for a couple years at a time,

been with the same cable network for 25, 30 years.

And those contracts are part of the problem too.

They have very little incentive to actually improve

the show because they're getting paid a shitload

of money. And until really the past three weeks,

all signs pointed to their next television deal

was going to end up being for even more money.

Oh, Lord, I don't, I don't understand how or

why the networks keep paying the ridiculous sums

of money, but because it's about live viewers

and most people watch things either. You know,

if you're following the rules, most people are

watching them DVR'd. Most people aren't watching

TV shows live. Whereas WWE is one of the only

ways that they can actually guarantee a live

viewer because it's supposed to be happening

in the moment. And then when they go to those

commercials, now they do the picture in picture.

So. Yeah. And that's, that's true, but their

ratings have been falling forever, which is why

I don't understand why they keep. getting the

TV contracts. But to be fair, those meager ratings

are pretty good still for a lot of these networks.

And the sad thing is for someone like me who

I am, I'm completely on the whole ad free TV

thing. Yes, I understand why TV has advertisements

because everything has to be paid for. I get

that. I would rather pay a subscription service

like Hulu to Watch ad free content like Raw and

Smackdown and even NXT versus watching it live.

Yeah, I mean with the coronavirus stuff I've

been I get free live TV again aside from sports

because of course I watch every football game

ever in any league that I possibly can. Anyway.

But aside from that, everything I get from streaming

services and the like, but I've got live TV back

all of a sudden because of various deals in place

and things. And, oh man, it's excruciating to

sit through all the commercials and stuff. It's

like, ah, here's. Ten minutes of content. All

right, now three minutes of commercials. I'm

pretty sure I'm the only one here that pays for

an actual cable subscription, aren't I? Because

you're insane. No. Yeah, I don't know why you

would. That's a terrible idea. My wife loves

Karen loves the cable package. She loves the

DVR. I've tried to get her to stream and it.

So I'm right there with you, Mike. I can watch,

I can watch CTV local news for free online and

anything else. Uh, you can watch this thing.

I don't watch news anymore. I don't watch it.

I pay attention to it. I don't watch it because

I read all the articles on like, okay, this is

a perfect example. Insert Facebook friend name

here, whoever it is. Post to my timeline or whatever

if I still allow them to do that Hey Mike guess

what this trailers out? Yeah, that's great. I

posted it four hours ago Like I'm always up on

whatever my interests are and I always make sure

I try my best to make sure I don't miss out on

anything kind of a thing and it's like I don't

need to watch the regular news because I follow

at least 10 different news channels on Facebook

that they all post the same news articles because

they're all in different markets. When I was

living in Mississippi, I follow one of their

news stations down there. Obviously, I'm originally

from Boston, Massachusetts. I follow several

of those, yada, yada, yada. I haven't actually

sat down to watch a news television program since

before Peter Jennings passed away. Well, I feel

everybody's pain when it comes to the ads thing

because I've had ad free YouTube for what, like

three years now. Yeah, I was part of the beta

program for YouTube Red. I guess it's because

my brother works there. So he's like, you're

on a family plan now. You don't have ads. So

I just take it for granted. Whenever I go to

a friend's place, like if I if I go over to.

And when Mike has the YouTube on, it's painful

for me to sit there because... Sure, that's why

I don't see ads on YouTube. I'm also part of

that program. No, no, no. What I mean is I don't

need an ad blocker. I don't need anything. And

it seems faster to load things, even though Mike

and I, I think, have the same internet. It's

interesting to me though, because it's like I

start taking it for granted. Whereas at first

I was like, this is amazing. And now it's like,

it almost feels like it's painful to see somebody

without it. Well, I mean, to kind of swing this

background towards the topic here. Who is WWE

advertising to? Cause I noticed it's always really

weird food companies. I mean, Tortino's was a

big sponsor for years. Snickers is bringing you

WrestleMania this year. They lost the Doritos

contract years ago. Snickers has been one of

their main ones for the last few years. Rocket

League. When talking about the demo numbers and

everything. I'm wondering if when it comes time

to renew their contracts, or renew their TV deals,

if they're actually going to change what their

demo is. They've been trying for years now to

get back the lost 18 to 49 viewers, where they've

been focusing, when they went to that PG era,

on the wider family PG ratings, but they've also

at the same time still been trying to capture

that lost market if they're just going to have

to change completely their metrics to like find

look at what market they already show to the

best and use that as their metric for trying

to get advertisers. Which is also why they get

the TV deals because those are the people so

their highest demographic when you break it down

even further is roughly 40 into the 60s and 70s.

And those are the people that still, yeah, those

are the people that still have cable TV. So that's

part of the reason why that. But yeah, I don't

know why. Yeah, I don't think many of those people

are playing Rocket League. Yeah, it's not like

that's a weird one. Well, they were wasn't. I

think it was a couple of years ago. One of the

major was SummerSlam was brought to you by Final

Fantasy 15. Yeah. Which I was like and what that

has nothing to like all I could think of is like

oh It's for grandma to remember what to buy for

Christmas. I Mean to also to be fair the the

40 year olds would probably fondly remember Final

Fantasy like I remember I remember seven that

was the last one I played don't really don't

be surprised if the media this year, which is

that two -part mania over two nights because

they realized they can't do a six hour show with

no audience. Um, I wouldn't be surprised if Square

Enix pays money to get advertising on there because

it's, uh, what's two or three days before release?

Uh, April. Yeah. Cause it's April 5th is mania.

Final fantasy seven comes out on the 10th, I

think. So yeah, it's But then advertising this

year is going to be interesting the very least

with with their competition. Can you even tell

me what the Who are the sponsors for? AW have

they even mentioned any I Know they have some

I just don't know who it is. No, I can't tell

you based on what they're What their brand is

you'd think it would be alcohol and cars which

are usually the ones that pay the most lucrative

money But WWE went away from having years ago

So yeah, like it's, it's going to be interesting

to see what they do, like, especially with the

whole pandemic going on. We also had, you know,

just this past week. Proud to you by Lysol and

Purell. Their advertisement rates are going to

go right through the roof right now. But yeah,

like the, the smackdown was also, uh, terrible

this week's one. And it was in, uh, You know,

the empty arena are, is this going to be like

the scary thing for them is going to be predicting

what happens when the, uh, the ban on travel

and everything and gatherings gets lifted. How

many people are going to actually go out right

away? Are they going to be scared too? Are they

going to lose audience forever? That's going

to be, that's going to be an issue for L things

though. I mean, so China's the first and they're

reopening theaters with the Harry Potter movies

in an attempt to bring people back in. They're

just trying to replay. What was most popular?

You're gonna do some roughly the same thing.

Oh Well, not to mention WWE have been trying

to break into the Chinese market for so long

is there gonna be pressure on them not to Because

of all this and the optics of everything Who

knows it's I guarantee you it's gonna you were

like it feel bad for people in England and Australia

and that they won't be doing you know out of

continent tours for quite some time. Yeah. No,

they won't. And again, we are now, because of

this virus thing, we now live in an uncertain

world. It's not just the US, it's not just Canada.

The entire planet is in an era of uncertainty

at this point. You're not supposed to go out.

Go ahead, Mike. I was going to say I've seen

some research out of the, it's an institute over

in England and they're typically listened to

about a lot of world governments. They're like,

you want to solve this problem? You're looking

at a minimum 18 month solution. And even then

this thing will probably come back in seasonal

waves too. Like, and a vaccine for this thing,

a true workable vaccine is a long ways away.

They can throw all the money they want at it,

but there has to be proper clinical trials, has

to be proper human testing. I guess who's country

started the human testing trials though. Why

am I not fucking surprised? Cause we're the best.

Yeah. And also, you know, I find it funny to

people that only four or five days ago were saying,

oh, no, this is not a big deal. It's going to

be over in two to four weeks. How much they're...

Oh, so you mean the president. Yeah, pretty much.

The other thing to consider is will they, because

of this, you want people gathering less... for

a shorter amount of time. Will this force them

to have shorter events when they do go in public

so we don't have these seven or eight hour shows

with all the pre -shows and all that junk? Will

it force them to be like, okay, we can only have

a maximum three hour show, including a pre -show

because in doing that, it reduces the amount

of time people have to go to the washroom and

be in close proximity to each other. Also, will

it force them to do a lot more outdoor shows

where they can spread people out farther? We'll

see the interesting things gonna be you mentioned

like all sports Really, it's gonna probably be

Major League Baseball that starts the curve like

deciding what happens and how to reopen just

because they're the season that's essentially

gonna be on roughly that time frame and Apparently

they've kicked around a whole ton of different

ideas, but the one that The one that's been mentioned

the most is that they may very well do, uh, crowdless

games at some point for a bit. And then eventually

open up to much smaller crowds with more sort

of spacing that kind of thing between seats.

If it doesn't work for WW elite, I'm sorry, the

audience list stuff. For raw and smack down that

I like I'm not gonna sit here and watch her on

smack down from now on. I'm just not Not until

they get a crowd back in there if they ever do

audience less baseball. That's nuts Now in my

mind, that's I would watch football in a boat.

I would watch football with a goat Now no Ryan

being the resident sports guy here whether you

know mostly football But does this mean that

the Raptors get to be champs for two years in

a row? So yeah, I watch it all and anyway, yeah,

that's the joke I made to my buddy who lives

in Toronto. Who's the he's a huge Raptors fan

and huge basketball fan as well in general and

yeah, that's my assumption I can't imagine they're

gonna come back just for playoffs which You know

everything's effectively going to be stopped.

I mean until minimum the fall until you can at

least see peak numbers. Anyway, which is why

getting back to it. It was really ludicrous that

Vince waited so long and so did Tampa by the

way who are equally complicit in this. Making

any sort of announcement that WrestleMania anything

was going to be different. They really kind of

played chicken on that And it was it was just

stupid and it was a sign of kind of how out of

touch Well, it's because with things I know it's

money. Yeah. Well, it's what ultimately comes

down to is for them. It's The money is worth

more than the lives until we're legally culpable

to it yeah, it's their Super Bowl and And it's

Florida people, so Florida be crazy anyway. The

podcast will obviously continue. We're obviously

going to have to switch gears. Cause like I said,

I like, I had to basically pull Mike Dodd's other

leg to even get him to be on this show. And the

thing of it is, is we've been doing this for

Four or five years at this point. We started

back in 2015 with this podcast on both GCR and

in twig and We're gonna have to switch it up

because I refuse to watch WWE at this point with

the audience list stuff I have we're gonna talk

about this next episode I don't know when the

hell that's gonna be recorded or released but

the audience list AEW from March 12th, but at

least they had at least they had Matt Hardy at

his drone that got me into it for a moment. What

is called Alex? Oh Vanguard one I fucking love

that. I'm like, is that fucking Vanguard 1? And

I got so excited because I love Matt Hardy because

Alex showed me all the broken Matt Hardy things

like a year and a half ago. Which was the only

part of TNA worth watching in like the last four

or five years, other than Tessa Blanchard's good.

Yeah, I was going to say, other than their women's

divisions, generally been the best part of their

not great show. Why doesn't Tony con just like

throw money to buy the deficient out from underneath?

Like, it's not like you anthem sports has money.

That family up here is pretty rich, but not enough

money to throw away Tony con money. Yeah. You'd

think that they would just sell it out. Right.

Um, so the podcast is going to change a little

bit. Um, I don't know if we're going to cover

AEW every week or anything. Cause I make a suggestion

right now. Why don't we do, you know, a little

bit of spotlights to catch everybody up. Why

doesn't, why don't we do one on like, you know,

us put together a summary on what's been happening

on like the other in quotes, majors, like what

happened, what's happened at impact. You know,

they've basically shrunk down, but their women's

division has overtaken the men's division. We

could do a thing on the relaunch of the NWA,

which has been pretty cool overall. Interesting

is probably the best way to put it. And then

we could do, you know, AEW and then, you know,

do specials after that, because I think for anybody

that's not been watching the others, other than

just WWE and AEW, there's been some interesting

stuff and there's people right now working in

the industry that if they move to, in my opinion,

if they move to AEW and they trim some of the

fat of the hokey bullshit that AEW's put on sometimes,

they could... You know capture like they're averaging

it just under a million viewers they could get

it You know another million to watch it and approach

the numbers of actual smackdown and raw Which

is still which is still funny when you consider

that two million viewers is the what they're

getting it on Fox on a broadcast TV Which is

in a In a time slot that is Traditionally death.

Yeah traditionally death or uh other shows like

on on in the same time we'll get like 12 to 15

million viewers like blue bloods yeah which is

like it's like tom south's mustache of course

but consider that that that that's what fox thinks

is a good number for them is two million to be

fair to be fair there are people that think blue

bloods is a good show so i still i watch it because

there's nothing else on friday's uh wait the

blacklist is back But that's not great. That's

what I do. Yeah. Uh, there I'm trying to think

of a network show. I actually watch and I watch

some sitcoms and that's about it. Watch law and

order because it's been on since I was like grade

seven. Yeah. I'll watch that too. Cause I love

ice tea and he likes my tweets frequently, which

always makes me feel kind of good. Oh, speaking

of Twitter, I need to bring this up. I don't

know which monkey that runs John Cena's Twitter

followed me back after I've been following him

for years now, but I am followed by John Cena's

official Twitter at this point, and I was like,

hey, that's kind of awesome. One weird person

who followed me on Twitter, he's, does anybody

here remember the show Parker Lewis Can't Lose?

Yes, I remember it. I don't, I don't. I'm followed

by the star of that show, Corin Nemec, because

I was talking about Stephen King's The Stand

a couple of months ago, and I'm like, man, you

were really good in that, as Harold, and I really

enjoy your work. And yeah, he'll randomly retweet

things of mine that are just like cute animals

or stupid observations that I have. So yeah,

good times. Goran Nemec, probably best known

overall from a few seasons of Stargate. Yeah,

the not quite good actor from Stargate. Which

one? Yeah, I mean, he was a replacement for,

well, so he essentially replaced Daniel for a

season. Oh, that's right. Then, you know, as

soon as the contract dispute was up, he comes

back and he magically goes to live on another

planet and comes back for like one or two episodes.

Yep. Thank God Stargate did not do. Thank God

most television does not do what the soaps do.

This character is now being played by blah, blah,

blah. They would only do that if they, let's

say they had gone for more seasons and then they

had an episode 300 where they always did like

the wacky episodes. I could have seen that where

every scene the actors are played by a different

actor. That would be kind of hilarious because

you've shown me some of the weirder episodes

where What's -his -face turns invisible. It just

does really stupid. Yeah, like driving up to

the mountain episode 200 worth or also where

the the cast decides to spoof Farscape which

half the cast was actually on Farscape yeah,

and then episode 100 was wormhole extreme the

the really low budget sci -fi channel show within

a show, making fun of them. Wow. Now sci -fi

channel just cancels all their sci -fi shows.

Oh, anything decent. And then it moves over to

Hulu. Well, or goes to Amazon and results in

a 400 % audience. Should be expanse, right? Yeah,

that's the one I was thinking of because it went

from like nobody's watching this Unfortunately

to it's still number four most watched so far

this year. So I still gotta catch up I didn't

like the first season because I found it boring,

but then I hear the second season really good

So the first season was all the we're getting

real off -topic. Anyway, the first season was

just all the world building and that's why They

literally just set all the ground rules, which

is kind of what? Star Trek tends to do. Set up

the ground rules, introduce the characters, and

then stuff happens finally. In addition to Alex's

idea of just doing one episode with multiple

promotion coverage, I do also want, whether it's

Ryan and myself, or whether it's a multitude

of whomever else, I want to get back to Boom

Studios' WWE comic. I've got two volumes of that.

We've covered the first three volumes. We stopped

at volume four because at the time, um, something

happened with the writer, uh, uh, Dennis Hopeless

or Hallam or whatever it is. He did something.

He's done a couple of different, uh, books since

then though, and kind of picked up his. Right.

I'm just saying at that time, there was something

that He did or said or something with a DC bookers.

What the hell was that anyway? Anyway, you're

seriously Well, I do that a lot I after all I

was born brain -damaged I literally don't have

a piece of my brain Put that put that on your

business card I was born brain damaged. I will

die brain damaged That's what you're gonna put

that on your resume Pretty much. Yeah So, but

I do want to get I did enjoy when Ryan and I

were covering for the pull bag and for this show

Um, the WWE comic that, that boom studios was

doing. So we have to continue doing that. Um,

it was surprisingly solid. Then the star wars

comics were good. They actually continue to be

pretty good. I'm starting to read comics now.

I've been following like boom studios, power

Rangers comics for like a year and change now.

I've really enjoyed those. And I'm starting to

branch out in the other things finally. So we

can have a whole other actually. I have an idea,

but it would require, uh, whatever. Anyway, uh,

Ma 'am Mike's episode 53 episode 54 next week

will be, I think it's going to be us. I don't

know unless I can wrangle Optimus Solo, Kevin

Thompson in, uh, we're going to talk about the

AEW audience list show and how much better it

was. His baffling enjoyment of Game of Thrones

season eight. At Sentra, the safety of our customers

Because when it comes to community, we're in

it together. Sentra. No? Alright. Game of Thrones.

Anyway. Yeah, the worst part about that season

was devaluing the earlier seasons when I sold

all the blu -rays. How bad does a show have to

get before I sell the goddamn blu -rays for the

whole series? Anyway. Wow. I still have BSG and

I hated that last season. There you go. Okay

then. All right, so that's gonna do it for us

Mike where can the people find you online? Currently

you can find me at this week in geek net typically

Our Twitter which is at this week in geek. I

am on Twitter at Birdman dot I'm only posting

there occasionally now these days. It's kind

nonsense as I'm known to do so you can follow

follow at geek cast radio for all our other network

stuff. I don't even know what we're closing this

out with, but yeah, I guess we will catch you

next time when we talk about the AEW first audience

list show, which was from March 12th, I think.

12th, 16th, something like that. I forget. Anyway,

that would be the 18th. Okay. There's that too.

Is that it? I think so. Cause I don't know what

the hell we never, I don't, I haven't done it

in so long. I don't usually, well, cause okay,

yes, this is a WWE episode and yes, I can have

you just crop out the old, the old out cause

I never had Neil do an outro. Um, I always just

put in the list because of Jericho. And then

I put in one of my instrumental tracks and one

of my favorite things. Whatever. So I don't fucking

know. I don't have my computer. I don't have

that. It's like, uh, anyway, we just have, we

just ended, you know, by listening to a few seconds

of the crowd reaction from WWE. You just made

the list. All clear. I'm taking it up as I go

along. I can hide behind this bell. Like I said

from day one, I'll take on anybody, anytime,

anyplace. Line them up and I'll go ahead and

knock them down. Right now though, it's time

to knock back some whiskey. When in store, we
