About this Episode

Eduardo and Patricia Freyre join the podcast to discuss their earliest memories of watching cartoons, covering titles like Muppet Babies, Looney Tunes, and G.I. Joe. The group reflects on the 1980s as a formative decade for animation and explores the shift in viewing habits from Saturday mornings to syndicated weekday blocks. The conversation also touches on the challenges of finding specific series on modern streaming services, the appeal of the Disney Afternoon lineup, and the distinct nature of watching shows as background entertainment versus serialized storytelling.

Hey guys, this is Rob Paulson, and you're listening

to the GeekCast Radio Network. Man, I should

have grabbed some popcorn. Man, am I glad I'm

recording this because holy crap, what an outtake

that's gonna be. I can't even cheat off. I'm

glad you said off and not on. Wow. Well then.

Yup. Hello and welcome to Tooncast. This is episode

286. I am, of course, TF2 and Mike. We are continuing

on the Tooncast origins here on the GeekCast

radio network. This time around, as per last

week, I am joined by Eduardo. Hello, sir. Hey,

how you doing? I'm doing. Sometimes I wish I

wasn't doing anything, but I'm doing. Yeah, exactly.

Also joining us is his better half, Patricia.

Hello. Hey, how's it going? It's going. Sometimes

I wish it would stop, but it's going. Can't stop

it, can we? I wish. All right, folks, 30 questions

all about cartoon watching. And we've already

through a... Completely rigged coin toss backstage.

We've figured out the order of who's going, who's

on first and who's on second for these questions.

I don't know. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So, Trish, did

you - Exactly. The dice are basically, what is

it, weighted or whatever they are. Anyway, did

you grow up watching cartoons and what were some

of your earliest cartoon memories? I did grow

up watching some cartoons, although I will admit

that I didn't watch a lot of cartoons. I was

more of a Sesame Street person. I don't know.

But the ones I remember the most, the one I remember

the most is Muppet Babies. Muppet Babies and

Looney Tunes. My mom loved Looney Tunes, so we

would watch a lot of the reruns of the Looney

Tunes cartoons. and a lot of the Disney shorts,

too. Yeah, and we're the mashed potatoes and

green peas. Mashed potatoes and green peas? No,

no, they can't sweat it out of me! I won't be

a stool pigeon! I won't! I won't be a stool pigeon!

And... and candy yams? Uh -huh, candy yams. The

yams did it! The yams did it! The yams did it!

Okay, up here's go! Aye aye, Captain Kermit!

I don't see a thing! They've got to be out there

somewhere, don't they? Are you sure you don't

see anything, Gonzo? Of course I'm sure. I don't

have eyes in my nose, you know. Hey fellas, I

think we better give Gonzo a boost. Okay. Ready

when you are, Kermit! Those were the big three

things that I remember watching. But Muppet Babies

has a very special place in my heart because

it was just so well done and even now if you

watch them as an adult. They hold up really well.

Oh, yeah, they do. If you can watch them as an

adult. Yeah, I've got to find them. I don't understand

that. A lot of rights issues. Yeah. Well, you

know, that's what happens when you put live action,

you know, MTV ish type stuff in your in your

cartoon. So poor Muppet babies. Yeah. What about

you, sir? Oh yeah, I grew up watching cartoons.

Still watch cartoons. Oh man, earliest? But as

far as like the earliest memories I have, I'm

going to have to say, yeah, like Looney Tunes

and Disney stuff, because we're talking like

late 70s, early 80s. I think that's what I started

with. And I do think I was exposed a little bit

to some Speed Racer. Not that I understood exactly

what it was. Yeah, I don't think anybody understood

Speed Racer back then. I don't think anybody

understood it when they tried to do the new film

now in the last couple of years, whenever that

was. Yeah, I mean, one of the reasons why the

80s will be, and this will actually be a question

later, but personally, one of the reasons why

the eighties will be the greatest cartoon generation

is because we always thought everything in the

eighties came from the all the looney tunes reruns

of nobody none of us kids knew that those were

original theatrical shorts from like 1930s and

40s and 50s nobody none of us kids knew that

back then and we had essentially everything we

had Looney Tunes and all the Disney stuff and

Pink Panther and and then you have all this new

stuff that comes up between GI Joe and Transformers

and He -Man and She -Ra and the Thundercats and

Silverhawks. The battle is over but the galaxy

-spanning adventures of the Transformers will

continue and the greatest Autobot of them all

Optimus Prime will return. Anyone want to see

some magic? Yeah, I think you better do your

disappearing act. Sometimes I feel that I am

not appreciated. Very, very good. When you got

it, you got it. Tally -ho! Wings of silver, birds

of steel. To a lesser extent, Tiger Sharks? I

don't know what the hell all that was about,

but that is what it is. That theme is still stuck

in my head, by the way. The Tiger Shark theme

or the Silverhawks theme? Oh, God, why? Both,

actually. Both. Okay, well, Silverhawks, I can

understand. Tiger Sharks, I don't get. I don't

know, it just... I don't know, that whole block

of cartoons, I remember when they were on, it

was like that would come on before like the good

stuff that you wanted to watch. So it's like

sometimes I'd be up early enough and I'd just

be like, okay, let me just watch this until,

you know, Captain N comes on. Hi, this is Matt

Hill, the voice of Captain N, the Game Master,

and you are listening to the GeekCast Radio Network.

And you know, the thing gets stuck in my head.

Feel sorry for your brain. Oh It's it's a weird

place That's for sure Thank you, sweetie, I appreciate

you backing me up not touching that one with

a ten -foot pole You got to buy me dinner first,

huh? Ha ha ha Don't worry, I'm a cheap date.

Yeah. Well, I'm in the red currently. So, you

know There's a lot of red in my ledger right

now. Anyway All right, Mr. Romanoff. Trish kind

of already answered this for herself, but what

cartoons were you watching the most as a kid?

Were you a Saturday morning consumer and after

school consumer or both? Mostly Saturday mornings.

It was funny because I remember my babies came

on at 8 o 'clock. Of course, on a Saturday, you

just wanted to sleep in because you'd been getting

up early all week going to school. Of course,

Saturday comes and you wake up early because

you got to watch your cartoons. And, um, but,

um, afternoons, you know, there was the, the

Disney afternoon with, you know, had DuckTales

and everything, which, you know, it's funny,

like DuckTales is really the only one I watched.

And then I would leave and, but my brothers would

watch Gummy Bears and Darkwing Duck and Tailspin

and Goof Troop and all that stuff. But for some

reason, I just wasn't interested in that. I only

liked DuckTales, but yeah, no. And I still, I

still watch DuckTales. Please tell me you've

had her watch Darkwing since childhood, sir.

Nope, he hasn't. Oh, come on! Darkwing was so

good! Oh, yeah, no. I think I've actually, in

real life, a couple of times I've said, singed

but triumphant. See, and I don't even get that.

Yeah, I think we all have. And I don't even get

that. She doesn't even get it, but yeah. Oh,

you know what? Not now. Not now, but now that

we've had this conversation, we'll see about

changing that. Well, I guess maybe now that we're

almost done binging Star Trek The Next Generation,

maybe we can move on to Darkwing Duck. I would

honestly, and I'm hoping so recently, this has

been in the news recently, Disney Plus finally

Finally fixed X -Men the animated series order

on their service. God damn time! Yeah, but they

still have not fixed Darkwing's order because

Darkwing starts with... Oh, crud. Yeah, Darkwing

is supposed to start with Darkly Dons the Duck

or whatever. It's the Terrace Bulb. You know.

She doesn't know, but you know. But it's the

Terrace Bulb a two -parter and... When it originally

came on Disney Plus, I'm like, oh, cool. Darkwing.

Yeah, I can wait a minute. This isn't how the

series starts. What's going on here? Stupid streaming

services. Well, anyway, like, you know, I do,

I do wish though, that one of the things they

would do is take the, you know, the, the openers,

you know, those little TV movies that they use

to open each series and Have them as like their

own, you know, maybe as a special feature and

like each series, you know have like the film

versions because I mean that's that's one of

the things for me, you know growing up was You

know later later on when you know Disney started

to come on to Weekday afternoons was each new

series. They did like a pilot TV film Yep, you

know, and I kind of want to see them in that

that form not you know not chopped up Not that

there's anything wrong with them chopped up,

it's just, you know. Yeah. It's kind of like,

you know, I want to see them the way I saw them,

like, that Friday evening, you know, in the fall.

So you guys have gone through all seven seasons

of Star Trek? We're a third of the way through

season seven. I'd never watched it when it was

on. So I figured I should. Um, since we watched

Picard and I didn't get a lot of the end jokes

and stuff that Eddie was, you know, laughing

at and going, Oh, that's cool. And I wanted to

know what was cool. So I'm like, okay, I gotta

go watch this. But now after this, I want to

rewatch Picard so that I can get all the stuff.

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Darkwing has 55 and 13,

oh God, math, here we go, math, two weeks in

a row. Just 80 something episodes, I think. Yeah,

so at least it's not seven seasons of episodes.

I mean, it's only two seasons or maybe five seasons,

I forget it. The way Disney Plus has it listed

currently is it's two seasons, but it is what

it is. All right, Eduardo, what about you, sir?

What are the ones that you remember watching?

Saturday morning or after school or both Okay,

I was I'd say I was a both kid, you know, I remember

growing up it was Like I'd come home from school

and I'd get maybe an hour or two of like being

able to watch cartoons and then I'd have to do

homework and Yeah, I would just not and I was

both like yeah, I would wake up Early on Saturday

mornings, you know to catch catch shows I mean

heck I remember there would be like some cartoons

that I would actually wake up even because yeah

the stuff, you know the The cool channels, you

know all their stuff is like oh it comes on,

you know starting an eight or eight thirty or

nine Yeah, and there were some cartoons. I would

wake up even earlier They were syndicated stuff

and they put those on at crack of freaking dawn.

I'm going to confess right now, I actually did

watch the 90s Iron Man and Fantastic Four cartoons.

Those were syndicated and they would be on at

7 or they would be on really early in the mornings.

you know, really get up and, you know, then,

and yeah, you'd have to like really get up to

catch them. Yep. I saw, I watched those. I mean,

they're really, they're really cheeseball, but

yeah. And so, yeah, I mean, I, cartoons, you

know, early stuff. Yeah. I mean, I was a, I was

definitely a, I was definitely both. Yeah. Absolutely.

Dark wing had 91 total episodes. So, okay I know

I know at one point it was like running simultaneously

like it was on Saturday mornings and it was on

weekday afternoons probably because I think like

I think I think they had I think like the Saturday

morning stuff was different episodes from the

the weekday stuff Yeah, probably. Probably the

weekday stuff once they got through that first

season. Most likely the weekday stuff was the

reruns because, I mean, you've got 91 episodes

in total after all, you know, and it only ran

from, yeah, it only ran for three seasons, but

it ran from 90 to 92 or 91 to 92. I don't know.

It was weird. It was that second and third season

were a little strange. Also, one of the great

things about keeping up being a cartoon fanatic

as you grow older, you start to find out stuff

like the fact that usually the way that these

things work is that they wanted enough for a

weekday run. When you see something that's only

two seasons and it has... A hundred and thirty

episodes. A hundred and thirty, yeah, exactly.

It's because they want to make sure they had

enough episodes. for monday through friday yep

you know and when you think about how long a

month is you know it's like yeah yeah you know

usually they're done by this with the season

by by christmas you know if they just run straight

yeah absolutely what was your number one favorite

cartoon as a kid number one Number one, jeez.

It's like, I want to say Muppet Babies because

yeah, it was, because I mean, that's the, I would

get upset if I missed it. It's like, I wouldn't

get upset if I missed any of the other ones,

but that is the one that I would get. upset if

one time I overslept and I yelled at my brothers

for not waking me up. So I mean, I actually got

mad that I missed it. You know, because it's

not like you could just go online and find it

the next day or something. Not in those days,

not even in the 90s. Yeah, you missed it. Yeah,

and who knows if you'd ever see a rerun too.

See, that's what's so funny now. You know, Eduardo

just had this whole thing about, about the syndication.

And I don't ever remember seeing a lot of the

reruns. I remember seeing them first run syndication,

like episode one to 65, whatever it is. usually

when we maybe saw reruns was during the summer

because they weren't on during this like that's

that's the big thing with cartoons then now and

forever is that they run from school year to

Christmas and usually Christmas they take have

between Halloween and New Year's they take off

and sometimes they'll come back as late as February

which was always so great for me because that's

my birth birth month and all that but you know,

so and then from, you know, you know, so from

January to May, you have all the new stuff. And

then from May back to August or September, you

have all the reruns. So it is what it is. What

about you, sir? What do you got? Okay, sorry.

What was the number one favorite cartoon as a

kid? Oh, Lord. I know what he's gonna say. I

know what he's gonna say. Go ahead. You probably

do, but you don't. My thing is just I never had

like, you know, a number... Pick. You have to

pick. I am putting a gun to your head. Pick.

And I hate using the whole I'm putting a gun

to your head thing because I hate those online

memes. But yes, you have to pick. She picks,

you pick. Okay, all right. Yo Joe, G .I. Joe.

That's what I thought. I was one that I always

had like just a ton of favorites and stuff I

wanted to watch. I never had like that one, you

know, but yeah, I just... That's so funny. I

just, I'm in the middle of, I haven't finished

it yet as of this recording. I'm in the middle

of listening to Christy Carlson Romano and Will

Friedle's podcast, I Hear Voices and they have

the man, the myth, the legend. I'm hoping to

have him back on this show if he'll ever check

his Facebook messages. They have Josh Keaton

on the most recent episode and they're talking

about the old GIGO PSAs. Oh yeah. As a kid. My

friends and I used to wonder, like, how the hell

would they have snake eyes do a PSA? They never

did. Yeah, he never had a PSA. Yeah, no, I'm

fairly certain. No, he never did, but we would

kind of joke around. It's like, hey, if they

ever gave poor snake eyes a chance to do a PSA,

how the hell is he going to do it? Like, doing

all sign language kind of thing? Hey, that would

have been, you know, diversifying and, and, and

all encompassing for the times because there

weren't a lot, there weren't a lot of site. Like

the only time I, because I'm legally blind, even

though I can see, I'm not like, like my lights

aren't completely out, but I have legal blindness

in me. And it's just one of those things where

as a kid, you never saw only time I ever saw

sign language people is. Basically the president's

speeches or you know that that kind of stuff,

you know, like if there's an emergency broadcast

or maybe maybe it would be at one of the baseball

football basketball hockey games maybe but you

know very rarely So yeah, that was always awesome.

Yeah, I Yeah, we used to joke. Yeah, we did my

friends and I would be like, hey, you know, imagine

snake eyes trying to you know Mime don't you

know, don't put your tongue on that on the ice

How about you want to see electric fence? That

too I think snake eyes is trying to mime that

we shouldn't pet the skunk. No, we know you know

snake eyes just like puts a thumbs up Are we,

is he saying knowing is half the battle? Yeah,

I think he is. Okay. Yep. Absolutely. What are

some other cartoons you like? Do you have any

favorite cartoon genre type? Huh. Eddie, maybe

you go first on this one. I gotta think. Uh,

is the judge allowing that? Okay. Yes, yes, that's

fine. Okay. All right. All right. Just, hey,

I just want to follow the rules. But oh geez,

well, you know, there's the obvious of like Transformers,

He -Man, you know, all that. But also stuff like,

oh God, also like more, you know, also Voltron,

the more obscure stuff like Defenders of the

Earth, Galaxy Rangers, Brave Star, you know,

Bionic Six. I mean, I was just all about the

action cartoons. That was my bread and butter.

I did watch She -Ra. Do you remember watching

She -Ra? You know what? I actually did watch

a few episodes of She -Ra. Yep, and then I would

sometimes watch He -Man, but I was more She -Ra

girl power. I mean, a lot of the Disney cartoons,

too. I remember watching The Wuzzles. Oh, yeah.

I remember the Wuzzles. That was one that did

not do the Disney Afternoon track. It was way

before Disney Afternoon. But Gummy Bears was

also pre -Disney Afternoon, but when they started

the Disney Afternoon, they're like, well, we

want definitive two hours. All right, let's throw

Gummy Bears in there. Yeah, at that point, I

think those are most likely reruns for them because

yeah, I don't wrong I don't remember when gummies

ran but Yeah, yeah, you're probably right. I

mean it was probably reruns You know, it's probably

reruns of the Saturday morning stuff. But again

done done so that it could be a full Like yeah

to our block of cartoons, you know Like we never

said they'd be first run, but that's full two

hours So when did Disney Afternoon start? I don't

remember off the top of my head. It was, I want

to say about 88, 89. Okay. So yeah, so yeah,

gummies ran from 85 to 91. So maybe in the later

seasons of Gummies, it was new episodes. But

the first season of Disney Afternoon, I doubt.

Eddie. I just Googled it and the first, the premier

date of Disney Afternoon was September 10th,

1990, our birthday. Eddie and I have the same

birthday, I know, kind of crazy. He's two years

older than me, but yeah. But it went from September

10th, 1990 until August 29th, 1997. Oh, wow,

only 97? Yeah, because by 97 they were abandoning

it to do other things and then the whole anime

craze with like Yu -Gi -Oh coming out the next

year and everything else. Well, Yu -Gi -Oh and

well... Pokemon was already a thing, yeah. Pokemon

was already deep. Pokemon, I think, didn't really

like breach... U .S. shores until like the following

year. Like about 98 or so. April 1st, 97 to present.

Interesting. That show's been on for almost 30

years. Which, well, it provides like some comedy

for me because, you know, I'll be talking to

the kids at work and I'll be like, oh yeah, I

remember when it first came out. I was, you know,

that was a long time ago. Well, no, not that

bad, but yeah. The age shock is enough that they'll

be like, what? That's like, yeah. That age shock

just gets worse every year, doesn't it? Well,

you know, especially if they discover something

and it's like, oh yeah, I watched that as a kid.

What? Well, Snow, you realize that people that

are turning 21 this year were born in 2001. And

you're like, oh my gosh, yeah. All right, let's

see here. How did your cartoon watching habits

change as you grew up and throughout your life?

Gosh. Well, you know, it just got to a point

actually where I didn't really watch cartoons.

I mean, just kind of stopped watching them is,

you know, I would still watch Looney Tunes. I

feel like those are just kind of timeless. There's

really, you know, there is no way to stop watching

those. And yeah, and I'll still watch the Disney

shorts too. But Sometimes the shows, I mean,

maybe more of the shows nowadays that are catered

more towards younger children. The cartoons we

had weren't really catered towards younger kids.

I mean, they were in a way, but there was plenty

of stuff in there for older kids and adults.

The Animaniacs joke of fingerprints. Yeah. Can

we stop finger imprints, please please like,

you know it it'll Oh My brain Oh 30 years next

year. Oh Relax breathe breathe in Yeah Yeah,

I know and that's like but that's the thing like

cartoons have changed, but they haven't changed.

What has changed is the overall... You look at

Spider -Man, okay? Yeah. I was never in... I

wasn't even born by the time 67 had been out,

so I had never seen that. I had kind of seen

Spider -Man and his amazing friends, but that

wasn't... I wasn't too... For me, the superhero

stuff outside of maybe Batman and Super Friends

didn't really hit until Batman the animated series,

Spider -Man the animated series, all the 90s

stuff. In the 80s, it was all about these original

properties like we've already mentioned Transformers

and Voltron and Thundercats and Silverhawks and

Man and G .I. Joe and all of that. But nowadays

there's a spider -man version for like spider

-man and his amazing friends currently on Disney

Plus That's essentially for kids. Yeah right

now like, you know, it's for Our age group say

from five to nine when we were that age in the

you know in the 80s But for kids today, but you

know, there's, there's a Batman for everybody.

There's a this for everybody. There's a that

for everybody. And again, the eighties were just

kind of like with Transformers and to a lesser

extent, mask has mask only ever got one series,

you know, with all two seasons. No, it only got

one, one full series, 75 episodes. It got two

seasons. Yes. But mask has never. Okay, I got

it. Transformers, Beast Wars, Transformers animated,

Mask has never had a second cartoon. Out of all

of everything that they have, like, oh my God,

we need to reboot this. We need to reboot this.

Mask has never had a reboot cartoon. I think

it's one of those things that it's always on

the list, but they never pull the trigger. I

also think Mask and G .I. Joe are the two cartoons

and the two properties that Hasbro has that are

maybe not so, especially more so G .I. Joe, maybe

not so marketable in this day and age considering

all of the militaristic stuff with it and everything

else and maybe they don't want to... Yeah, Joe,

G .I. Joe, I mean, I think you're right on the

money with G .I. Joe. I had a conversation. I

recorded like another... podcast a couple of

years ago or so, where I discussed this with

somebody, I think it was Jim Sorensen. I've also

had this discussion with other people where G

.I. Joe, I think, has a marketing issue. I have

noticed, and I've said this, this is another

thing, where notice, okay, Transformers. a few

years ago with Transformers, it was a buffet

where, okay, do you need something for the little

kids? Here's rescue bots. Oh, do you need something?

Here's a toy line that does stuff with the movie

style characters. Oh, and here's a toy line that

has more retro feel. So for those of us who grew

up in the 80s. It was this, you know, pick your

poison type thing. And G .I. Joe has never had

that. You've never had this thing. No, G .I.

Joe, no, because you can't, again, it seems wrong

to market military to kids. Like, yes, I am sure.

Insert father's name here and his son, who may

be a junior. Maybe he wants his son to follow

his footsteps and go in the military. But yeah,

I think that kind of brings back the whole thing

of the 80s marketing and how, oh, the, the toys

sell the tunes and whatever and everything else

and all this and all that. And it's one of those

things where they can't - Or the tunes, yeah.

Well, yes, but yeah. Yeah. It's just, it's one

big whole giant Cobra mess. And I, I don't know

who to blame. It's I don't think anybody's really

to blame and plus no no no no yeah well you also

you brought up a good one which was different

time yeah, there's a different time and at the

time you know at the time you did have this kind

of You know jingoistic As they say in the movies

America bleep yeah You know so that was that

was GI Joe GI Joe was, you know, in the 80s,

it was America. Heck yeah. Yeah. I mean, I know

it's not heck yeah, but yeah, we know. Thank

you. Yeah. Well, Trish, you and I can do like

the actual version later. Don't worry about the

sensors. I'll play it in the car. Oh, there you

go. There are no sensors around here. I'll say

fuck all I want. So America, fuck yeah. I didn't.

You know, what can I say? I didn't know the type

of show I'd be on. Didn't want to, you know.

Well, it's the same show you were on last week.

We crack the censors around here. Oh, okay. All

right. All right. We don't leave those in tech.

And honestly, nowadays, and look, it was great

saying that for Captain America, for Steve Rogers,

for Chris... Evans and all that, but in the last

couple of years, I don't know. I kind of aspire

to the Jeff Daniels, Will McAvoy character. America

really isn't... Yeah, the news. And you know

what? I'm right there with you. I think that

is one of the best television speeches that we've

had within the last decade or so. It was like

I was watching an out of body Pete like it was

like it was like on ABC World News Tonight with

Peter Jennings Jennings because it was like,

holy crap, he's saying what we're all thinking

or what we should all be thinking. Yeah, what

a bunch of people are thinking. So anyway, podcasting.

Oh, boy. All right. How often do you go back

and rewatch any of the cartoons you grew up with?

Well, I haven't seen Muppet Babies in a long

time, mainly because you can't find it. I mean,

I do have a few VHS tapes of Muppet Baby cartoons

that I bought a long time ago. But my one VHS

player has a VHS tape stuck in it. I need to

get that out of there first before I can even

attempt to try to watch anything, but then again

I'm afraid of something else getting stuck in

there. I do have the VHS DVD combo that I brought

with me when I moved out here. I've been meaning

to like, um, I've been meaning to try to hook

it up to the TV that's in here. And it's one

of those things that you procrastinating on.

I think on that Pluto TV, isn't there a station

that's all Looney Tunes cartoons? Yup. Yeah.

And so it's like, sometimes I'll go on that too,

cause I can always watch those. Yeah. That's

the thing. Like nowadays. Whether it's 2B or

whether it's Peacock TV or I mean technically

Peacock you would have to pay for unless you

had Xfinity but I mean you could still pay for

it without the ads but at least with the ads

it's whatever but yeah between Pluto and 2B and

all that stuff there's all kinds of stuff if

you're fine with with ads and you're not paying

for the content. That's fine. What about you,

Eduardo? Oh, go ahead, Trish. Sorry, were you

not done? Well, I was going to say there's a

lot of the cartoons are now on Disney Plus and

I just have to set aside time to actually go

on there and watch them because I feel like I

never have enough time and I always forget that

it's there. Because it isn't like Darkwing Duck

and all that stuff on there now. Oh, yeah, so

it's like it's there. I should watch it and I

think there was one time we watched Right about

the time that we first got Disney Plus, I think

there was like an evening we watched a couple

episodes of tailspin Talk about a catchy theme

song. Oh God, yes That gets stuck in my head

and I don't like, I have two different categories

of, of, you know, old theme song that gets stuck

in my head. The one where I want to like drill

a hole in my head to get, make it stop. Yep.

And then the one that it's like, no, no, no,

no, no, no, no. You don't have to leave. Stay

here. Stay here. We'll jam. But yeah, tailspin

is one of those that's like, nope, I'm not. No,

you don't have to leave. No, we actually want

you. I have all those theme songs, you know,

from Disney Afternoon. Even the Disney Afternoon

theme song, I have that in my iTunes. And so

it comes on in the car and we sing along with

it because, yes, because that's who we are. Yep.

Yep, yep, yep. Yeah, I think I should I think

we should definitely go to Disney Plus and I

should check out some of these old cartoons I

never watched. Yeah Yeah, cuz that's the thing.

I mean some of them are really really good like

You know, I used in one of the oh, so originally

I forget who it was that was gonna do it with

me But we were going to do a whole eventually

I'm going to do a whole Disney afternoon spotlight

where we go through season by season all of the

cartoons and I originally thought of this idea

back in 2017 and at the time I created an audio

ad for it that basically I'd say all my spiel

in the ad and then I'm putting in various, like

I'm putting in, let's get dangerous and whatever

other things. And I ended on the last note of

Goof Troop, which is, yeah. That's awesome. Yep.

Yeah. All right. So what about you, Eduardo?

Which ones of you? He's always watching G .I.

Joe when I come home from work. Well, first of

all, here's the thing. Number one, I have the

DVD sets of G .I. Joe and Transformers. And then,

of course, Hasbro's official YouTube channel

started playing G .I. Joe episodes. So not all

the time, but... Sometimes, if I'm working in

the kitchen or just waiting for the love of my

life to come home from work so that I might shower

her with affection, I'll put on YouTube and if

I'm not watching random videos about stuff, I'll

see what episode they're on. It's not everything.

I'll say this it's not everything it's the first

two the first three minis some select episodes

of season one the season two opening miniseries

and Then that's it and then they cycle through

again. Yeah, I mean that's why you need to have

that DVD set because They're not gonna like I'm

actually surprised that they put them on their

YouTube channel because There was a period there

where they didn't have them. No, I know. What

I'm saying is that there was a period there where

they were playing the episodes, then they stopped,

and then they brought them back. I was happy

to see them back. I was like, oh, yay. I was

also hoping that they had... a new selection

of episodes, but nope, it's the same thing. But

you know what? I'm like, you know what? I need

something on while I wash the dishes and I don't

want to concentrate on the screen. So, oh wait,

they're playing the Rage of Cobra. Okay, perfect.

Yeah, see, you can't do that with a show that

you absolutely love that you at. Like, if I'm

sitting down to watch a cartoon show and I'm

going to use this as an example because it is

the best example I can think of. I cannot put

Beast Machines on in the background because Beast

Machines is a 26 episode epic long religious

novel for television as Bob Skeer says it. No,

that's what he says. It's a religious novel for

television for Transformers. You know, because

it's the whole - You know what? I believe it.

That's what it is. But that show has so much

continuity in it. There's so much from episode

to episode where you just can't. That's not a

background. Background shows to me are like Alf

or The Cosby Show or even Family Ties or Night

Court or whatever cartoons for that kind of stuff.

Look, I love the Looney Tunes, but they are also

very much, they can be, because they are this

good, a background show where you know them by

heart. I can sit here, do the dishes, cook dinner.

And balance a top on my head all at the same

time while mimicking every line in Duckamuck.

Like, don't even test me with that kind of stuff.

So, you know, it's just one of those things where

certain cartoons, yes, are definite good enough

background noise, but then you get to a point

where you hear something if you're using it as

back, oh, I'm just going to sit here and watch

this for next. Ten minutes while the dishes are

being done and the next thing you know, it's

three hours later. Yep, and you know You've watched

you all day. You know what? I'll I mean heck

it even it's even me where if I'll have GI Joe

on you know while While working the kitchen or

something and I'm not even looking if I just

hear you know here like a snippet of dialogue

and then all of a sudden I'll like I'll answer

back and it's like yep. I just I basically just

you know You talk to the TV and hey, you know,

I mean, I'm pretty sure you could put I'm pretty

sure you could put the The GI Joe and the Transformers

animated movies you could probably put them on

mute and oh, yeah Yes, as soon as you see a scene,

you know like the other night a couple of months

ago I needed to just Vedge out because i've been

needing to do that a lot lately this past year.

I just sat there and had look transformers the

movie should never be a background thing but

literally i'm sitting here playing insert mobile

game angry birds candy whatever i don't care

what the game was but i'm sitting here focusing

on playing a game on my phone. You know, till

all are one and then the matrix drops and the

better leader comes up and picks it up and we

figure out, oh, good. The hut, you know, the

triple revenue on punk is going to be the leader.

Yay. But literally every line, every, like, I

know that thing, like the back of my hand and

it's like, I can sit there and I can say the

lines along with the thing, whether it was on

mute or not, but I don't ever have it on mute.

There have been a couple of times in my younger

days where I've gotten rid of some household

vermin. I've actually stood over them, ready

to deliver the killing blow. In my best Frank

Welker impression go, such heroic. Nonsense.

Yup. The first laptop I ever had, I had a friend

do some custom work on it, and the boot -up sound

was actually Unicron going, I have summoned you

here for a purpose. And the shutdown was Megatron

going, Wait! I still function! Like my current

laptop doesn't have that but I told myself, you

know, whenever I get a laptop That is gonna be

the boot up and the you know, the startup and

the shutdown noise and I got it I mean, I don't

have it anymore, but I got it Which cartoons

from your childhood have you rewatched as an

adult and which ones held up the best and or

worst? Well, Looney Tunes still holds up. Some

of the Disney ones hold up, some not so much.

I used to love Donald Duck cartoons, especially

with, well, like the ones with Chip and Dale,

and then also with Huey, Dewey and Louie. But

then you watch it when you get older and you're

just like, Donald's a dick. I mean, and he's

like smacking his nephews around and he's, you

know, being horrible to Chip and Dale. And it's

just like, wow, this doesn't really hold up.

And yeah, especially what he does to his nephews.

It's like, that is like child abuse. And yeah,

some of them do not hold up. Yeah. Sadly no and

normally i don't like me that's a question we

ask but normally i don't like looking at them

in that way i like looking like look. You cannot.

Ask me if transformers holds up today because

it's not supposed to no cartoon is supposed to

hold up to whatever whatever today is. Like,

there's no way it can because it was made in

a specific time by specific people, whomever

those people are. Look at, and Eduardo, you know

this, but look at all of the blackface stuff

in Looney Tunes that they had to basically have

Whoopi come on the DVD sets and say that it was

a different time back then and this, that, and

the other thing and everything else. there's

stuff on Disney Plus, both live -action and cartoon,

where it has that warning of make and maintain

outdated cultural depictions. So it's like, hey,

yeah, some of this stuff is not kosher nowadays,

but back then, yeah, we were not as sensitive.

And I mean that not in the... Not in the snowflake

way, but in the, you know, we were kind of not

licking somebody's feelings, you know? Yeah.

Just like, uh -huh, funny. Funny, somebody, you

know, war -wooping like an Indian. Uh -huh. Oh,

boy. Yeah, that's not, not any good. And, and

look, like, there's no way to retroactively change

any of that old stuff. But, uh, yeah, apparently,

and I don't know why. I don't know, and this

is obviously going to be a tangent, folks, and

I don't watch the show, but I know y 'all do.

I don't know why GQ has this article, but why

retroactively editing Stranger Things would be

the beginning of a worrying TV trend? Are they

editing? What would they be editing out of Stranger

Things? Let's see, 30 million an episode really,

the creative team. Set in an episode in Stranger

Things four on March 22nd, forgetting that it

had been established as Will Byers or birth.

Oh, they screwed up the birthdate of a character.

Really? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, they forgot that a

certain day was supposed to be a character's

birthday. That's the shit. Like, so when I got

sent this article. My thought was really seriously

they're going back and re -editing things like

because oh my god We said something bad. Oh my

god, heaven forbid if stranger things ever got

canceled like that's what I thought this was

and come to find out it's just the God we need

to remember Will Byers birthday. We need to pay

attention our own continuity. Oh boy I mean between

Will Byers and Arthur Berghardt. It's like a

whole theme around here the last two weeks Like,

I don't get it. But anyway, back to the questions.

Eduardo, what about you? Which ones from your

childhood have you rewatched and as an adult,

which ones have hold up or not hold up? Well,

of course, G .I. John Transformers, Robotech,

Voltron. A bunch of stuff from my childhood,

just because of availability. And as far as not

holding up, Okay. Let me... All right. Okay,

first off, my first experience with watching

something as an adult and it not holding up from

my childhood, and I'm pretty sure that, you know,

you're gonna have people who are gonna ask me

to be hung from the nearest yard arm or, you

know, from a, you know, just... And it would

be Thundercats. Cartoon Network. reran the 80s

Thundercats like ages ago. We're talking almost

a decade or so before that new Thundercats cartoon

in the arts. And I just, I noticed that the voice

work was just kind of very stilted, like kind

of very halting. It just didn't hold up. It was

one of those things where, yeah, the magic from

my childhood was just not there. Voltron also

is one that I still kind of hold some nice memories

of it, but it's one of the things, and this has

happened with other cartoons, including my beloved

Joes and Transformers, where as you get older,

then you start to notice Like some of the goofy

some of the the goof ups You know stuff like

stuff like for example You know just since you

know after finding out that Voltron was brought

over from Japan you start to see like Dubbing

we're like lips exact you don't exactly match

up or you know things like that or some of the

voice work where they're trying to keep up with

the original Japanese actors and try to match.

You can see where they didn't quite make it.

Yeah. Luckily Transformers did not have, because

Transformers was solely here, but Voltron, yeah,

they had to... And really, I don't think Voltron

did. They didn't do, no, they imported GoLion

to become Voltron. Yeah, Voltron was two shows

that got imported. Yeah. It was two shows because,

and that's the other thing. We mentioned about

how if you're going to syndicate something, you

had to have at least four, a hundred episodes.

So that's the thing. They wanted to bring over

GoLion. GoLion only had this many episodes. So

then they brought over what is now known as vehicle

Voltron. to fill it out. And it was simply just,

oh, these are the adventures of this Voltron

and these are the adventures of this Voltron.

And then when Voltron got popular, apparently

they talked to the Japanese animation studio

and they were like, hey guys, you think you could

animate for us a big team up special? Because

the kids over here love it. And that's how we

got Fleet of Doom. If you want to hear like a

great... story of translation, fun with translations

and importing stuff over and combining shows.

The TV series Robotech. Robotech is a mix of

three different cartoons all stitched together

with a story that's supposed to be this multi

-generational battle against aliens. And the

third section of that, which was Mos Pita, there

is an episode that is supposed to take place

in a graveyard. And the narrator, they have a

narrator putting in dialogue where he describes

the wreckage of... you know, the wreckage of

different things from, you know, different artifacts

from the first and second Robotech wars. And

it's like, uh, I don't, I'm not seeing what you're

seeing there, buddy. It's like, it's like, you

know, basically having the nature like, trust

me, all this wreckage is here. It's definitely

here. So, you know, that's, it's stuff like that.

Yeah, absolutely. Which cartoons that aired when

you were an adult, because we're all still adults

now apparently, have you liked the most? Let's

see here. Eddie go first, I think. Okay, all

right. Oh boy. I'm trying to think if there's

a way to answer this without revealing that I'm

an old fart. Well, I like South Park. I like

South Park. Well, I liked South Park. I don't

know if I like it anymore. Maybe I got too old.

But sometimes I like it. You know, it depends.

And Family Guy. I mean, Family Guy was, you know,

well, that one's actually getting annoying too,

but I don't know. Am I just getting old or is

it really getting annoying? I mean, what do you

guys think? I, personally, I am not a Family

Guy fan. I think it's been annoying since day

one. You know what? I'm gonna go out on a limb

and say that it's a little of column A, a little

of column B. Okay. I like one of those little

people that's like all of a sudden, that's not

music! It's not music! It's not music! You damn

kids with their hipping and their humping and

pull up your damn pants, you morons! Yeah. Yeah,

there we go. Yeah. Oh, jeez. Okay. Yeah, I'm

going to sound like an old fart because I did

watch this. Well, it actually started when I

was a teenager. Started when I was a teenager,

but for the purposes of this, we'll count it.

Gargoyles. Gargoyles, X -Men the Animated Series.

Tim -verse stuff, you know, Batman the Animid

series, Superman, Batman Beyond, and Justice

League. Justice League's got Justice League limited,

you know. More recently, Young Justice, The Venture

Brothers, and Metalocalypse on Cartoon Network

on Adult Swim. Very cool, very cool. Oh, I like...

And by the way, I'm not counting anime in that.

Gosh, Angry Beavers. Angry Beavers. Of course.

Angry Beavers and Ed Edanetti. Yeah. See, that

one I never did. Never did Ed Edanetti. I think

it was one of those things I've seen bits and

pieces, but I'm not like, you know, wasn't one

of those things where I had to religiously watch.

The Adventures of Gumball is pretty funny. Oh,

and the Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy. I

haven't seen a bunch of them, but they're really

funny, the ones I have seen. So you haven't seen

any of the more modern Transformers or Star Wars

or any of the Marvel stuff or any of that, Eduardo?

Okay, with the Marvel stuff, I did do Avengers,

Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Spider -Man, I think

I saw. snippets of the, uh, of the ultimate cartoon.

Okay. Like I saw little bits and pieces here

and there. Um, as far as Avengers is concerned,

yeah, I didn't, I haven't seen like, uh, Avengers

assemble. I actually, and you know what, maybe

this is just me being, you know, being bitter

or something, turning into like, you know, bitter

old man of like, you took my stories. Um. When

they cancelled Earth's Mightiest Heroes and they

did Assemble, I'm just like, okay, you lost me.

I was enjoying Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Why

did you have to get rid of it? Because you wanted

the cartoon to look more like the movie. Which,

I'm probably answering my own question, but still,

it's one of those things. But also, yeah, there's

some of the Transformer stuff. I did try, I tried,

I really tried to watch. I haven't really caught

Prime, although I heard it's better than it looks.

Um, not to mention, you know, I know that Sorenson

has done a lot of work with it, especially that.

I mean, 2012 standards, it was, yeah, I mean,

but 2012 animation standards for CGI animation.

It's pretty damn good for what it was. But again,

back then they were going for a. Back then Hasbro

had started to try to do this aligned continuity.

So all of the movies and prime and this and that,

and all of the pros now, like they were supposed

to all be in this continuity. So the designs

that you get for specifically Optimus and Bumblebee

kind of come, kind of sort of a little bit come

from the movie design, but Megatron has an old,

has a cool jet design. RC is a nice blue motorcycle.

She kind of has a love affair with Spider -Man,

so there's that. Would you like me to explain

that? No, I know of what you speak. I know of

what you speak. Believe me, I go on TFWiki all

the time, so I'm aware of it. I did try when

they were importing over Armada, Energon, and

Cybertron. Yeah, I tried I really did and I'm

just like I'm sorry. I'm out. I can't I can't

do that. I can't do this I'm so sorry Yeah, as

soon as any of those kids in any of those cartoons

open their mouths. I was out well when I noticed

that like the The opening, you know, they took

like the first three opening episodes of Armada

and tried to stitch them into like this little,

you know, afternoon movie or something. Yeah.

And the minute that we had a lot of focus on

the kids, I'm just like, oh, you're losing me.

You're losing me. I'm leaving. Yeah. Bye. Yeah.

It's just especially because I had before that

came on. I know Dreamwave. Had the license for

the comics. Yeah. Yeah for the comics and the

comics had like Two or three issues that took

place on Cybertron. Oh when I saw that they rushed

through the Cybertron stuff and we're like, hey,

look at these kids. I'm just like No, why yeah

why and just Yeah, and yeah, I think I caught

like maybe a couple of us of Cybertron and I'm

just looking at this and I'm just like You're

like, I have to take a deep breath and I'm just

like, okay, come on, remember, this is probably

not supposed to be for you. But I then found

myself like, but then who in the name of all

that is holy is it supposed to be for? So continuing

on with that rage, are there any cartoons that

you hate or have been greatly disappointed by?

I really hate GI Joe. I'm kidding. It took you

this long to find this out, Eduardo? More like

it took her this long to try and take a pot shot.

Damn. That's funny. Yeah, we love each other,

but there's a lot of taking shots at each other.

That's okay. More her than me. Taking advantage

that I've been raised to be like this gentleman

who just fears the wrath of the fairest sex.

There you go. I don't know if there's any cartoons

that I really hate. Or have been greatly disappointed

by. You don't have to choose one or the other.

It can be both or it could be one or the other.

I don't know. I'm not sure if anything's disappointed

me either because I don't really watch that many

cartoons or have that many things that have been

turned into cartoons that... Yeah, yeah, yeah,

I don't think Eddie what about you? Okay. Okay.

Now are we talking like? We're talking newer

stuff anything Okay, like like like you could

have been greatly disappointed by the fact that

they switched Cobra commander from the cool faceplate

to whatever the hell else he had or You could

have hated the fact that they Rebooted reboot

or something You know what I don't think there's

anything that I just out and out hated mm -hmm,

but there are like a few instances where I look

at something and I'm just like okay, this was

not well, okay There are like a few cartoons

that I look at And I can tell I'm like, you know

what? This is not for me. And I don't mean that

in like a nasty way. I mean, I can tell that

whoever made this, they didn't make it for me.

This is somebody else's version of the story.

Yeah. And I'm fine with that. It's just this

belongs to somebody else. It doesn't belong to

me. So I'm just going to, you know, I'm walking,

you know, like I will admit, I will admit. Being

younger in the 80s and you know indulging in

a few episodes of my little pony and Then like

I haven't been able to get into friendship friendship

is magic You know and it's just and it's fine

because it's like it just doesn't feel like it's

something that I would get into and Again, I'm

just it's not from a place of hatred. It's just

yeah, I I don't think I'll be into it and I just

walk you know it's like I'm glad I'm glad people

enjoy it and the whole you know brony phenomena

it's like if someone's getting enjoyment out

of it good it's not you know it's not my cup

of tea but you know I'm not gonna hate on it

something I was disappointed in is Netflix when

they did their um the war for Cybertron trilogy

Like number one it seems like if I'm hearing

reports like if I'm hearing the reports correctly

They were kind of trying to go on the cheap.

So we don't have Peter Cullen back. We don't

have Frank Megatron Walker back you know and

some of the voice work gets close but Not close

enough. Yeah, and it just it just kind of felt

rushed and Like some of the more modern stuff

I notice, you know, one of the things that attracts

me to, you know, the old cartoons is the fact

that it's like cast of thousands, you know, the

fact that you have all these characters and how

a lot of modern stuff, even if you have like

a ton of toys out, they'll have that core cast

with not a lot of people, you know, that you'll

find in the toy aisle showing up. It'll be like

maybe four or five people each side, and then

just this core, and then all these characters

will just not be around. And it's like, well,

wait a minute, where's this person? Where's that

person? The first time I was disappointed with

that was actually Beast Wars. That you had all

these characters who had toys, and it's like,

where's this person? Where's that person? Why

haven't they shown up? Yeah, but with Beast Wars,

it was... their descendants. So you're not going

to get a Beast Wars version of Prowl or a Beast

Wars version of Shockwave. Well, that's not even

what I'm talking about. What I'm referring to

is, you know, you have all these characters that

are part of the Beast Wars universe who never

showed up. Like in the cartoon. Oh, well, again,

okay, so in that case, it's mainly because CGI

was at its infancy, pretty much at its birth

back then, and that's why that cast is extremely

small is because it costs, it costed then just

as much as it probably costs now to do various

things with CGI and even more so back then. Yeah,

we'll see. I know that now, but then you'll have

stuff that's like, wasn't CGI. Yeah. Or didn't

seem to be that CGI that still had like small

casts. And it's like, come on, man. Yeah. And

I don't know how that was one of my things with

Sigma six. Yeah. It's like, come on, where are

all these Joes, man? And that's the thing, like

with like, I don't know. Who it is, I don't know

if Netflix or if it's Hasbro or I assume it would

probably have to be Hasbro going to Netflix's

higher ups and saying, okay, we will give you

this amount of money to do this, this show. And

I know from hearing several interviews with FJ

DeSanto, the main overall executive producer,

show runner, whatever you want to call him. I

know he mentioned that. They were only given

a budget for 18 episodes and they were not given

the traditional unionized voice actor budget.

They were just given a budget enough to get people

and look, I agree with you, but Jake Foushee,

who was Optimus Prime, he's not the best Prime.

as far as like trying to get a Peter Cullen there.

However, Jason Marnotia as Megatron, huh, as

this, so this is because this version of Megatron

is not, is not Frank's version. This is not the

eighties Megatron. This is Gladiator Megatron.

This is basically IDW Megatron. Yeah, no, yeah.

And damn did Mar -Nosha did a good job with that.

Oh, yeah. No, although the whoever they got for

shockwave, there were times I'm like, there were

a couple of times I was like, wait, is Shockwave

talking or is Starscream talking? Yeah. Well,

like, I think there's I think there's a reason

why Corey Burton had like a very David, you know,

rest in peace, you know, voice. Yeah, absolutely.

It's like, you got to at least try. At least

try to have an idea of if these two characters

are going to be doing a lot of interaction, get

them to sound different. Again, War for Cybertron,

yeah. I'm trying to remember if the trilogy was

basically made on the... I want to say it was

made right before and almost during the pandemic.

So again, what I'm betting is that it did not

really like, it didn't get the legs that it probably

needed kind of thing. Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised.

No, more for Cybertron. July 30th, 2020 to July

29th, 2021. It was basically made in the middle

of the pandemic. So, yeah, I mean - Yeah, and

at least a positive of that, I mean, if you can

find any sort of pandemic positive, is that with

something like this, you don't have to worry

about - crap we can't get you know we can't get

Mike Blanchard into the studio you know just

kind of be like okay hey we're gonna do you know

we know you got an audio setup we're gonna call

it we're gonna do a zoom call and you know you

can you can do your lines that way so at least

there was stuff in place yeah so that's the difference

that's the main difference between like generation

one or even beast wars any other transformers

show that you can imagine that has been in the

last almost 40 years God, I can't believe you're

saying that. Yes, I know. Well, you know, we

are a year and a half away from 40 years. Okay,

no, I'm still a year and a half, so... Yeah,

yeah, yeah. So my point is, is that these actors

did not have the advantage that the other almost

40 years of actors had, which most of them were

in the studio together. I literally, we've interviewed

Frank Titaro, we've interviewed Starscream and

he said it was just him in his house reading

the lines. And while Frank Titaro is a great

version of Starscream and he has a lot of fun

with being Starscream and that's great, there's

only so much you can pull from doing something

that is. just you basically video gaming it and

reading the lines to send back to them to have

them mixed together with all the other cast members

who have sent in their other lines. Yeah. I actually,

that kind of reminds me of an interview that

I, not an interview, sorry. I have Dan Gilvezan's

autobiography. Yeah, Dan Gilvezan. Of his time,

yeah, of his time in... with Transformers and,

you know, and he talks about being able to record

together with everybody and how fun that was.

And he talks about how when he recorded his stuff

for Transformers, the movie that he was just

alone in the booth. And it's like, he was like,

it wasn't, it's not the same. It's yeah, it's

not the same at all. It really, really isn't.

And that is amazing. Yeah. I've seen, I've seen

like behind the scenes footage and photos and

stuff. And I just look and I'm like, holy cut

that, you know, If I'm going to be a voice actor,

that's the kind of thing I want. I want to be

with a group of people and just playing off each

other. Yeah. Because you're all still sitting

there with the script, but you can all interact

with each other and see each other and see how

each other's voices is versus just hearing them

or not even hearing them at all. Like I said,

like you said, being in the room by yourself.

All right, who is your end all be all favorite

cartoon character from any cartoon you can pick

one hero and one villain? Okay, be an animated

movie yeah any any cartoon cartoon. Okay. Well

my favorite villain is Mother Gothel from Tangled.

Yeah, cuz she is just she is Really pure evil.

Mother we're going home Rapunzel now you don't

understand I've been on this incredible journey,

and I've seen and learned so much I Even met

someone yes the wanted thief. I'm so proud come

on Rapunzel mother. Wait. I think I Think he

likes me likes you please Rapunzel that's demented,

but mother. I is why you never should have left

Dear this whole romance that you've invented

just proves you're too naive to be here Why would

he like you come on now really? Look at you.

You'll think that he's impressed Don't be a dummy

come with mommy mother No No, I See how it is

Rapunzel knows best. Rapunzel's so mature now.

Such a clever grown -up miss. Rapunzel knows

best. Fine, if you're so sure now, go ahead then

give him this. How did you? This is why he's

here. Don't let him deceive you. Give it to him

what you see. I will. Trust me, my dear. That's

how fast you'll leave you. I won't say I told

you so. So if he's such a dreamboat, go and put

him to the test. Mother, wait if he's lying.

Don't come crying. Mother knows best. And...

Why do you like her? Because she's just the best

villain. I mean, it's... She has no redeeming

qualities. You don't feel sorry for her at all.

And with a lot of the other villains, you could

find something in there that you might feel sorry

for them for. You might think, oh, well, maybe

they had something happen to them. You can think

of something but with her. I mean, she steals

a baby. Because she wants the magic to keep her

young and then the whole and she's gaslighted

her her whole life and Mother knows best listen

to your mother And Every time she tells her I

love you She's not looking at Rapunzel. She's

looking at her hair Yeah, every time yeah, yeah

So no just a very well done Well done, villain

there. And she can sing. She can knock your socks

off with her singing. But the favorite one, that's

hard. I like Wacky Daffy Duck. When he was wacky,

like early Daffy Duck. When it got more into

the late 50s, early 60s cartoons, they just turned

it into a jerk. He just became a jerk. Yeah,

I mean, he's, yeah, but you like the one where

it's like the... And bouncing off the walls.

Yep. Yep. It's him and like as the salesman for

Porky or for Elmer where he'll sell them anything.

He'll sell them this or sell them that or it's

the one I remember is the blue Danube. where

it's him and he's just quacking, quacking, quacking.

Oh, no, the best one is him and Porky. It's Tom

Turk with them for Thanksgiving. That's when

he's really, really wacky. Because even the turkey's

like, man, he's nuts. Yeah, really. All right,

Flint or Duke. Duke. Wow. Although, gotta give

Flint props for the fact that, you know, he didn't,

you know, he wasn't, he was really like, you

know, just putting the moves on Lady J. Duke

was a bit, you know, I think Duke, you know,

at some point you gotta push him and you gotta

go, dude, come on, come on, the chick with the

crossbow really loves you, dude. I mean, there

was some flirtation there, but you could tell

Duke was kind of trying to be like, you know,

Duke was more into Scarlett because I always

thought as a kid it was Flint and Lady J and

then Duke and Scarlett. Yeah. And then poor Cover

Girl was just, you know, she didn't have anybody.

And then, yeah, come the 2000s, it's like, hey,

let's, let's, let's put, you know, Cover Girl

and Shipwreck together. Which it's like, I wouldn't

have thought that, but then, but then my brain

is like, You know, maybe. Remind me of Cover

Girl and her, like, is she Southern? Is she this?

Is she that? What is she? She's not Southern.

Okay. She is. I believe she was born. Okay. If

we go, if we go by file cards, she was born in

Illinois. Oh, okay. So she's a Midwestern girl.

So that kind of makes sense. You got the Northeastern

boy in shipwreck played by Lauren Lester. And

then you got, uh, You know, Little Ms. Midwestern.

Or Midwestern, if that works. Well, the Sea Dog

with the X model. There you go. But seriously,

I'm not saying you have to pick between those.

And by the way, if you go track down this old

Joe comic called Special Missions Brazil, There's

a backup story, which does cover the Shipwreck

Cover Girl courtship. Wow, of course. It is surprisingly

sweet. Yeah. When we were interviewing, this

is, oh, wow, again, almost 10 years ago in 2013.

Uh, when we were interviewing Lauren Lester,

I had completely forgotten and didn't like, Lauren

Lester to me is Robin. He's Nightwing. He's whatever,

but didn't eat. Cause I wasn't watching Joe as

a kid. I watched Joe every once in a while, but

I, and me being who I am being originally from

Boston and from New England. I had no idea it

was him using a New England accent for shipwreck

until we did this interview in 2013 and I'm just

like, how did I not know this? Hold on, because

I have a question. If you go on places like IMDB

or Wikipedia, they list that Neil Ross did the

voice for shipwreck. I could have sworn it was

Lauren, but... Well, if you look at the credits

for Geogeo the movie, it lists Neil Ross is doing

it. Well, maybe in the movie he did it. Or it

could just be that they... Oh, no. You're right.

I'm sorry. I'm not thinking a shipwreck. Okay.

I'm thinking a barbecue. Lauren was the voice

of Barbecue. Yeah. But the point is Lauren Lester

in the G .I. Joe cartoon doing a New England

accent. Like that's... Barbecue is from, and

Barbecue is from Boston. Yeah. So that's, that's,

I'm sorry. That, that, that's my screw up. You're

fine. You're fine. That's, that's, I'm like,

wait a minute. Yeah. But yeah. Well, and And

then we have Michael Bell. He did the voice for

Blowtorch as well. And he gave Blowtorch this

brogue. Even though, according to his file card,

Blowtorch was born in Palm Beach, Florida. So

I'm just like, okay. Somebody wasn't paying attention

that day in the booth as far as telling what...

Normally, they would get a picture maybe a little

bit. Maybe they'd see the file card. Sometimes

they wouldn't, but whatever. It is what it is.

I wouldn't be surprised if somebody high up just

hearing that his name was O 'Hanrahan was like,

hey, let's be funny and have him speak with a

little... Yeah, that's what I'm probably trying

to say is it's... Whatever, you know, it's like,

you know what? Whatevs. It's funny. It's funny.

And, you know, I'm just, um, I'm not gonna, I'm

not gonna raise a fuss about it. So you don't

have to pick a G .I. Joe character, but which

hero and which villain for you? Oh, geez. Okay.

Um, I'm going to go. All right. So I won't do

G .I. Joe, but I am going to say, uh, Optimus

Prime. from Transformers again, it's one of those

things that It's like, you know, it's like Pringles.

I can't just have I can't have just one But you

know, so we won't be here like until midnight

Recording this. Yeah, I'll just you know, just

say Optimus Prime and Got to say when I saw the

commercials for the return of Optimus Prime.

I'm like No, he's not. Well, if this was Japan,

it would be like, okay, we'll have him back for

one or two adventures. And then he dies again.

What? But, but yeah, you know, I mean, when I,

Optimus Prime villain. Oh man. You know what?

I'm okay. I'm going to go with, I mean, he's

not like my all time favorite, but I'm going

to go with some variety here. Okay. And I'm gonna

go with Venger from Dungeons and Dragons. Oh,

God, why? You know what? I don't understand that.

You know what? I think, well, because he's got...

I love the look. You know, I love Venger's look.

And honestly, one of the things that makes, you

know, Peter, Optimus Prime, Cullen, like, such

a treasure... is that he, you know, you got the,

you know, you got the gruff, heroic voice of

Optimus Prime. And then you have Venger's, like,

just evil growl. And it's like, this is coming

from the same guy. So yeah, I'm like, hell yeah.

You know, I can, I can do this. You know, it's

teased. So yeah, and again, just great visual

look for like a villain. Yeah, yeah, with Peter

it's always, as a kid, you know, obviously Optimus

Prime and everything else. When you're a kid

and you catch all of Knight Rider and reruns

and on syndication eventually, and you end up

watching Trust Doesn't Rust before you watch

Optimus Prime or after you've watched Optimus

Prime, you're like, wait, what? Are you, oh,

and I'm doing a really, and I'll insert the audio

here somewhere, but are you awake? You mentioned

food. Where would you like to go? The Ringmaster

is ready. I detect no Ringmaster, and oh, God.

Yeah. My go -to car line is, you know, him rousing

on Kit. He's like, it's the inferior model. Yeah,

it's an inferior production line probably. It's

an inferior production line model. Yeah. Yeah.

And then, you know, and then they say what you

will about the 2008 series, but in episode 12

of that series, they brought him back. I heard,

I heard. Okay. So you need to go, like, you don't

have to watch the whole series. You don't have

to, whatever. All you need is, is the 12th episode,

Night to King's Pawn. That's all you need to

buy on iTunes if it's still available on iTunes,

but watch that and he says In and again, I'll

probably put the audio in here somewhere But

he says kit must die and it's just like oh my

god Optimus Prime Why do you want to kill kit?

Don't do that like no Alright, what are some

other cartoon characters you like are there any

that you hate Trish? I mean, I love Mickey Mouse,

but of course I, you know, I mean that goes without

saying because I'm such a Disney nerd. But, um,

and, uh, but after a while Donald Duck kind of

becomes your favorite. Especially when he does,

when they do cartoons of Chip and Dale. And,

huh. I'm trying to think of ones I hate. You're

just a really loving person. I know it's hard

Embrace your hate. Stop it. Stop it. I mean the

power of the dark side I mean for the most part.

I don't like Eric Cartman on South Park as he's

such a you know About the only time I ever agreed

with him was the one episode where the hippies

invade South Park and he is the expert they call

in to get rid of the hippies and he goes in there

and starts playing death metal. I mean, you know,

just having grown up in the land of hippies and

just having to deal with their crap all the time,

it was just like, yes, I totally agree with this

kid on this. Yeah, I need to find that line somewhere,

but radio stations, I don't think radio stations

now use it anymore, but radio stations back then,

as soon as that episode aired, every single radio

station, no matter what you would call in to

say to them, knock off all this tree -hugging

hippie crap. Yep. Yep. Yep. Yes. Yeah, I am no

Trey Parker. You know what? That works. Better

than what I could do. I do have a cartoon character

that I hate, and that is Brian Griffin on Family

Guy the Dog. I cannot stand that dog. When they

killed him off a few years ago, I was like, yes.

And then they immediately brought him back. And

I'm like, Oh, you guys suck. Finally could have

gotten rid of Brian. See for me, if I was a family

guy fan, I wouldn't mind them chilling off Stewie

and keeping Brian, but that's just me. I'm not

kids. No. I'd rather keep the dog than the kid,

but that's just me. For me, I'd probably say...

I think I would be... I'm probably gonna... I'm

siding with you on this one. Only because...

God, how do I say this? I prefer Evil Stewie.

Yeah. Cuz like We'll call him metrosexual Stewie

just I Don't know I don't he was a lot more fun

when he was like, you know trying to kill Lois

Yeah, you know now it's just I just I just don't

like him. I'm sorry Sorry this offends anybody,

but I just I'm just like Gah! What happened to

the Stewie that had, like, would fire a death

ray at Lois and then go, like, blast when he

missed? It's like, ugh! Yeah, I just don't. Out

of all the characters on that show, Brian is

the only one I could probably stand. I can dig,

I can dig where Lois is coming from because yeah,

Brian can sometimes be like, so sanctimonious

that you're just like, like that, you know, that

famous scene where Quagmire lays into him. I

just kind of find myself going, yeah, yeah, that's

the damn point. It was just so freaking annoying.

It's like, you just want to be like, dude, shut

up. Like, stop. You're not impressing anybody.

You're being a douche. Oh, and I don't care for

what's his face on the Simpsons. Is it Gil? Is

that the guy that never has anything happy happen

to him? Oh, yeah, dear old Gil. Yeah. No, I can't

stand characters like that where nothing good

ever happens to them. I can't stand those characters.

It's like total Debbie Downer time. And every

time he comes on, I'm like, oh crap. Oh crap,

yeah. So you liked it when Biff won then, right?

You like Back to the Future too when Biff wins

then, right? Well, here's the difference. Biff

is an asshole. Gil is just a down on his luck

guy. Yeah. Well, I find Gil funny in little amounts.

you know, like little doses because I recognized

where the parody comes from. You know, Glenn

Gary, Glenn Ross happens to be one of my favorite

stage productions. So it's like, I recognize

the joke. So it's like, I appreciate that. But

I do have to agree with Trish that it's like,

okay, he's fine in small doses, but giving him

his own like focus episode, it's just like, oh

dear Lord. Yeah. But, but yeah, I recognize,

you know, the, the, the Jack Lemmon tribute and

Gil and, oh, no, don't worry. You know, this

is old Gil. Hey, I'll be back on the board. You

know, it's just a little streak. What Gil really

needs is his own Gus is what he really needs.

If Gil is supposed to be Jack, then he needs

his own Mathau. That's what he really needs.

That's what old Gil needs. That's what old Gil

needs. Yeah, there you go, teaming up for some,

you know, classic Hollywood fun. I'm sure that

the kids love it with their, uh, what do you

call it, irony. Yeah, what do you, what do you

mean? What do you mean that the test audiences

don't like it? Shut up, Gil. Yeah, we don't like

it. We're jumping out of our seats over here,

Gil. All right. Who are some of your favorite

voice actors? Tress MacNeil, because I can recognize

her like in everything that she does. I'm just

like, oh, there she is. But Mel Blank. Holy crap.

I mean, he was Warner Brothers. And you know,

I mean and June for a I mean she worked until

she died basically I mean pretty much she loved

what she did and Yeah, yeah, I came across you

can tell when people are having fun There there

is nothing more fun than watching the Bugs Bunny

which hazel two of them together And it's just

amazing. Oh, yeah. Yes, absolutely Well, as you

know, it was weird. It's like, um, jumping to

the other side to Disney. I didn't know for the

longest time that Walt Disney was the original

voice of Mickey. I did not know that. I did not

know that. And so, you know, it surprised me

when I found out, but then once I knew, it's

like, oh, I can kind of hear it now, you know,

and then, yeah, and interesting. And then, you

know, I mean, it's. Of course, I mean, you know.

I know they've had people since, yeah. I know

they've had people since this, but there really

is only one set of voices for Mickey and Minnie.

It's Wayne and it's Russie. Yeah. Absolutely.

Let's see. Alan Tudyk is like my new favorite

voice actor. That man is so talented, he can

do no wrong. So, have you heard the news? I heard

the news. I heard the news. Okay, so then you

know. Okay, he knows, you don't. Are you going

to burst my bubble here? No, no, no. This is

one of the most interesting castings in Hollywood

history. Okay. Alan Tudyk in the upcoming Transformers

Earth Spark series on Paramount Plus and Nickelodeon

is going to be the voice of Optimus Bride. Nice.

Yep. Nice. Man, I'm going to have to watch that.

You know what? Looking at the show, it looks

like it's geared towards a more younger audience

because you look at the main characters are like

a couple of kids. Yeah. But I think it's kind

of, I think it's kind of, it's kind of teetering

on the line of it's not too adult that the young

kid, it's more, it's like crossing, um, rescue

bots and rescue bots Academy with something like

transformers, primes visually. It's not that

animated style, but it's, it's that kind of.

thing where the kid characters are going to be

kid characters. The robots are going to be robots

and you're going to have obviously the robot

kid character in Bumblebee, but you're going

to have this new and distinctive and interesting

different voice for Optimus Prime. And the one

thing that somebody recently, actually my buddy

DJ Valentine, who does, uh, he's one of the hosts

on simplistic reviews podcast. And he, I, I,

so I, I have HBO max, but. I've only had it for

like a couple of months now recently, and I never

have watched Harley. Not that I don't want to,

not that I won't eventually, but I've never watched

Harley. So until he pointed it out to me that

Alan Tudyk is the voice of Joker in the Harley

Quinn show, and then I pointed right back to

him and I said, dude, holy crap. Because 22 years

ago in 2001, there was this little movie that

basically launched the late great Heath Ledger's

American movie career called The Knight's Tale.

Yes. You have two jokers in one movie because

Alan Tudyk is Watt in that movie. Yeah. So, yeah,

no, Alan's amazing. Yeah. Yes, he is. Do you

know he came? He was at a Comic Con that was

here in Reno a couple of years back. There was

a kids area in this convention. He went over

there and he read stories to the kids and did

all the voices. They wouldn't let adults into

the room unless you had a kid. You're just like,

hey kid, I'm your uncle, I'm your aunt. Yeah.

Hey, kid, remember me? I'm Uncle Jerry. I don't

have an Uncle Jerry. Nice to see you again, kid.

Ha ha ha. Very funny. Look, I want to see Alan

Tudyk. Just nod and smile. Yeah. I mean, you

could always just have... Well, I know you guys

don't have 13 cats, but I'm going to say 13 cats.

You could always just have them dress up as a

human. Yeah, this is my kid when really it's

your 13 cats. Oh boy. I think it's a little late

now. That convention was years ago at this point,

but yeah. Any others Trish before I move on to

him? Go ahead Eddie. Oh wait, you mean a different

him. Well, come on if we're talking, you know,

if we're talking like great voice actors We gotta

give Frank Megatron Walker. Oh, yeah a shout

out man. I mean he is a voice God, you know I

think he I think he deserves to be right up there

with Mel Blank. Oh, no, absolutely He is yeah,

you know, whenever I hear of like a spat of celebrity

deaths. I'm like somebody go to his house right

now Like right now because the day he goes he

takes like oh Takes almost all of Toontown with

him basically Pretty much, yeah. It's going to

be a dark day in animation. Yeah, I mean, it

isn't going to be a steamroller revealing an

actual cartoon, but yeah, you're absolutely right.

Yeah, basically. And that's one of the reasons

why I think you should check out Transformers

Prime is because you know what he sounds like

as Generation 1 Megatron. Well, that high raspy

voice up here. Yeah. Basically, he was killing

himself. He wasn't killing himself, but that's

a throat ripper. Yeah. What he did was... I think

I've actually heard it. I think I've actually

heard it. Yeah. I'm sure you've heard the voice

and I'm sure you've heard the story, but what

he did was he took it down and he reversed the

way the vocals were coming out of his chords,

and it sounds so good. Like, literally, it's

so good. Yeah, from what I've heard, I'm just

like, wow, this is, you know what? This still

feels like Megatron. Yeah. Look, there's, I'm

sure there's plenty of other people that could

do a Scooby at some point or another. And look,

Don Messick will always be Scooby -Doo first,

and then Frank Welker will be Scooby -Doo second.

But Frank Welker has always been and will always

be Fred Jones because Frank Welker... That's

his voice. He's not doing a voice. That's how

he talks. And if you want further evidence of

that, he did... What was it, Trish? It was the

computer wore tennis shoes, right? And of course,

you can tell which... He does a live action appearance

in that one. And of course, you can tell who

it is because you just listen. That student that

sounds like Fred Jones... That's Frank Welker.

You got it. You got it. Right there. Right there.

Got it in one. I do like Michael Bell. Yeah.

He has, I think, his voice of Duke is like a

perfect hero voice. Especially if we're talking

like in the 80s. Oh, yeah. Absolutely. With these

strong jawed types. He nails it. It's funny because

He does that voice in the Jetsons movie. He does

that voice for a member of the Spacely Sprockets

board of directors. It's the Duke voice. It is

undeniably his Duke voice, and it's just hilarious

hearing it coming out of this short, older guy

with balding gray hair, and he's going, this

better be good, Spacely. And it's like, that's

Duke. That's Duke. He just did his Duke voice.

It's like, I need an authoritative voice. I'm

just going to go with Duke. Well, I mean, yeah,

Michael Bell, absolutely amazing. Oh, yeah, Trace

McNeil. Trace McNeil is another good one because

she's one that has so many voice acting. She's

one of those that, yeah, you look on IMDB and

she's got all this stuff. And it's like, yeah,

you recognize her voice. It's just so like, it

just works. There's no other way to explain it.

Her voice is so recognizable, but it works. I'm

trying to think, Tara Strong is another good

one. I think she's another good one. She is my

default Harley. I still prefer... I mean, I like

her Harley. Her Harley is good. I'm not saying

it's not good, but Arlene will always be Harley.

There's just... Yeah. Yeah. All right. Let's

see. What else do we got around here? Before

you move on, we do have to wrap up in about 30

minutes. Okay. Well, then we're going to go Blitz

style coming up. Did you ever own anything based

on a cartoon, toys, comics, coloring books, etc.,

as a kid? Okay, that's a yes. Next question.

Yes. Trish, would you like to answer? Because

his laugh is his answer. Yes, no, no, we had

a lot of stuff. Very cool, very cool. Yes. What

is your favorite cartoon theme song? DuckTales.

Oof. DuckTales, I think I'd also put into that

list Bionic 6. How big is your animation, DVD,

or digital collection? Are there any series that

you own the complete set of? Which we kind of

already know that answer, but go ahead. Well,

what do we I think we have all the duck tails

and I think so too. Yeah, and we I Think we have

what else do we have? I know we have at least

a couple of tailspin and Darkwing duck and Stuff.

Yeah. Yeah, but I don't think we have the whole

set And I think I know you they never released

the whole set. I don't okay That would explain

that then. And then Eddie, I know you have all

of G .I. Joe, right? All of G .I. Joe, all of,

okay, well, all of Sunbow G .I. Joe. I don't

have the DIC stuff, but we'll count that as a

separate thing. All of Transformers. And then

thanks to my beautiful wife and Amazon Prime

Day, I have the entire animated series of Batman

the Intermittent Series on Blu -ray. Very cool,

very cool. So yeah, hoping to get like the entire

collection of X -Men. I don't think... have they

put out a full set yet? I don't think they have.

I want to say they at least... I don't think

they ever upscaled it. I know they have more

than one season, definitely. Yeah, the five seasons

were released on DVD back in the day, but I don't

think there is an actual, like, I don't know.

Anyway, we'll figure that out later. Let's see,

which cartoon had the biggest impact on your

life? Trish, you go first. That's the running

order biggest impact on my life. Yep He's You

don't make these easy do you know and it gets

harder from here I would have to say The Disney

movies probably have the biggest impact on my

life Okay. Yeah, cuz I I still watch I still

watch them all the time Yeah. Yeah, that's my

answer. Disney. Okay. Mine's still obvious. It's

a tie. G .I. Joe and Transformers. Pick one.

Okay, I'll go. Alright, I'll go with the one

that I have the most toys of right now, which

is G .I. Joe. Okay. They are happy. There you

go. Trying to do a tie. You can't do a tie. I

could have done like a five -way tie, but you

know. Yeah, you could have. See, that's the thing.

Yeah, we don't have time for that. Do you have

a, my parents wouldn't let me watch that cartoon

story? Yes, Simpsons. When Simpsons first came

out, my parents would not let us watch it. My

stepmother got freaked. She was like, what are

you watching? Oh, it's the Simpsons. Yeah. It

was controversial back then. It was like, oh,

Bart Simpson was a bad role model. At churches,

they were telling people, don't let your kids

watch it. So my mom wouldn't let us watch it.

Of course, little did I know that because my

brother's bedroom was at the back of the house

and mine was by my parents' room, we both had

TVs in our rooms. I didn't get to watch it because

they could hear it, but my brothers watched it.

Oh, of course. And they wouldn't invite you.

Nope. I had no idea. Eduardo? You know, I never

had that with a cartoon. I do know that once

Family Guy in South Park came out, that for my

little sister, it was, you can't watch that.

And she kind of had to sneak a few watches. It

was, you know, parents are asleep, you know,

I'm over at my friend's house type of thing.

Yeah. I never had. I think during my formative

years, there was no, there was never really any

cartoon that was like, no. I mean, I do know

there were a few parents that were like freaked

out over Dungeons and Dragons or even G .I. Jones

Transformers, but I didn't have I didn't have

the circle that was kind of like, you know. They're

corrupting the minds of our children! Yeah. What

is your opinion of the cartoon sidekick? Examples?

Snarf, Orko, Webby, something like that. Love

them, hate them, don't care, either way. I liked

Webby. Webby was cute. And actually, I like the

new Webby on the new DuckTales cartoon better,

because she was badass. Yeah. Yeah. As far as

sidekicks, it would depend on the sidekick, because

some, it's, yeah, you just want to like, you

want them to suffer the same fate you wanted

the dog and duck hunt to suffer from. There was

an anime that came to the US, Ronin Warriors.

There was this little kid, Yuli. Sometimes it's

just like, kid, they're trying to stop a demonic

invasion of Earth. Can you please shut up? It

definitely depends. And for me, there was never

more of a... It's... Look, I love the theme song

to Mask. I love the idea of Mask. I am sorry.

You only need... Look, yes, was Spike the kid

character in Transformers? Yes, but Bumblebee

was also the kid character. kind of because he

was trying to, you know, look up to Optimus Prime,

and so was Spike, and they were partners and

whatever. There's a huge difference in being

partners and being Scott and T -Bob from... Oh,

God. Worst sidekicks ever. All right. Well, you

know, you do have to give props to Matt Tracker

for being a single father. True. And at least

trying. Yeah. That has nothing to do with how

horrible his son and his son's robot are. Well,

yeah, yeah. Maybe it does, but it really, really

doesn't because yikes. I don't know. It might

be hard to find a babysitter when, you know.

you're facing international terrorists. That's

what T -Bob is for. He's the babysitter, he's

the snarf, he's the cringer, he's the arco, except

he's the worst. Look, Scott, I can kind of understand

because like you said, it's genetics, it's this,

maybe one fell off the tree, whatever. Matt Tracker

or whomever was the one that programmed T -Bob,

that's the problem. Anyway, yeah. In your opinion,

which decade represents the golden era of cartoons

and why? 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000s, or the

2010s? Because the 2020s aren't over yet and

we can't judge this decade yet. Well, and that's

probably just because that's when I watched the

most cartoons. There was a toss up between the

late 80s and the early 90s. But yeah, because

they kind of blended together. Yeah, they overran

each other. But yeah, I mean, you know, I don't

think I watch enough modern cartoons to have

an opinion on the 2010s. So yeah, that's my answer.

Yeah. Yeah, I would have to say. Mid to late

80s to early 90s. Yeah. Was like the golden age

because you had, you know, you were starved for

choice. Yeah. Like, you know, you could go, you

know, you had the cartoons on Saturday mornings.

You had channels you could go to for your favorite

cartoons and, you know, coming home from school

or eating your cereal before school. And then

the early 90s, you know, took the ball, ran with

it. And even you started to have people who were

going to experiment and just be like, OK, I'm

not just going to throw this out so I can sell

toys. Let me see what I can get away with. Let

me see if I can kick things up a notch. And I

mean that in terms of storytelling, like Batman,

the animated series. You can watch it. You can

definitely watch it as a kid. You're like, oh,

Batman and he's got the plane and yay. And then

you can watch it as an adult and have episodes

like Heart of Ice and Perchance to Dream and

things like that. Yep. Absolutely. So some people

view cartoons as something, and this is mainly

based on those mothers and fathers and parents

groups in the 80s. Some people view cartoons

as something for children and don't view animation

as a serious form of media that adults should

consume. Who should cartoons be made for, in

your opinion? Everybody. I think they should

be made for everybody. If you are the type of

grown -up that thinks that cartoons are just

for kids, I just feel very sorry for you. It's

cartoons cartoons and like I throw anime in this

You know, they are what they are is they're an

art form And you know they can be I mean and

they can be for whoever your audience is they

can be Purely for kids and they can be for they

could be purely for adults. They could be for

the entire family Yeah, it's an art form. It's

not a genre. Yeah Absolutely. Alright, so I've

been meaning to have somebody, and I say this,

I've said this in every episode, and I just need

to do it, but maybe I'll cut this out, I don't

know. I've been meaning to have somebody do a

voice for this, and I don't know, maybe I'll

have Eduardo do something later or something

or other. But we are now entering the cartoon

fantasy land. Anything from question 25 to 29.

It's fictitious. It doesn't exist. It's make

believe. It's pretend. So technically neither

of you are married to each other in this because

there is a question about that later. So if you

could own any vehicle featured in a cartoon,

which would it be and why? Well, I'm gonna cheat

here because I'm gonna I'm gonna say the back

-to -the -future cartoon just so I can have the

DeLorean because I want a time travel That's

technically not a cheat. I mean, you know, it's

featured in it in a cartoon so Or maybe the time

-traveling train That was in there too. That'd

be better on steam. It's it's more economical

Yeah Of course, I could say also there's been

some animated Doctor Who episodes, so maybe I

could say the TARDIS. Yeah, they've had a few

animated webcast stuff, so that counts. Here

we go. I'm counting it. Is that fuel -efficient,

though? There's no fuel. It runs on the... It

runs on a star or something. I thought it ran

on the dead souls of people that it ejected from

it. Maybe the master's TARDIS. I'm sure the master

could use that for his TARDIS. There you go.

Eduardo? okay do I cheat or do I you can pick

any transformer they are robot beings you cannot

pick any transformer they are technically vehicles

I was not I wasn't gonna pick a transformer okay

good what I'm actually gonna what nothing go

okay I'm actually gonna okay I will actually

go with how's moving castle what Howl's moving

castle from the movie from the Miyazaki movie

of the same name Okay, yeah, I don't know anime

so you're gonna have to explain that okay It's

a magic castle that can actually move on its

own and it has doors that can go to different

places So why didn't you just say the castle

that looks like a TARDIS? It doesn't look like

a TARDIS. That's the thing. Okay, so the whole,

oh, what if we can't breathe that you can breathe?

So this question, if you could live in any cartoon

world that you wanted, where would you live?

Wow. My first inclination was Neverland, but

I don't know, they have a lot of problems there

too. I mean, pirates and fairies and alligators,

oh my. Yeah, mermaids and outdated cultural depictions.

Somebody's definitely losing their marbles over

that one. Yep. Okay, I'm gonna say New York as

seen in the cartoon gargoyles. Okay. Because

mostly because yeah, I can you know if I become

more of a night owl I can you know hang out with

actual living gargoyles Mm -hmm that'll work

then back in the day. I did have a crush on Alisa

Maza Didn't we all Who would be your top three

toon pals to join you and become a quartet? Eddie

if you know you surprised she hasn't picked I

was gonna say I'm surprised you haven't picked

Huey Dewey and Louie yet You can't go with that

that's a suggestion and that suggestion is vetoed

because they essentially have all the same voice

sort of Not the new one Oh, okay, fine. Not in

the new one. Good catch there, Trish. Okay, so

we could just say new 52G we do in Louie. There

we go. What a rebirth. Oh, I like that. Good

one. Good follow -up, man. For me, well, I'm

going to say they can be from any... Yeah, you

don't have to be for the same thing, right? No,

no, no, okay I'm gonna say well first off I'm

gonna say Hudson from gargoyles Only because

I mean, hey, it's nice to have a nice wise, you

know, wise man old wise guy in the group next

Skyfire from Transformers because dang it. There

you go. You know our transportation taking care

of And then, ooh, quartet, oh dear. Oh jeez,

yeah, I'm having a devil of a time. Oh jeez,

I can't, you know what? Lady J, only because

let's get a lady in there and, you know, I always

thought it was kind of cool how she had the javelins.

There you go. So there you go, okay. Very cool,

very cool. All right, so as I mentioned a moment

ago, You're not married to each other. If you

could date any cartoon character, which one would

it be and why? I think I know Eddie's answer.

Oh, really? Elisa? Yeah. Actually, no. Oh, boy.

Trish, what's yours? Prince Philip from Sleeping

Beauty. I always had a thing for him. If he dated

you, he wouldn't have to worry about waking you

up. Very true It's like do not worry. Do not

worry my love. I will wake you with a kiss Oh,

no, don't worry. My alarm will go off. It'll

be fine. Yeah, but but but but okay, so yeah,

you said You're wrong about Elisa Mazza The one

I'm choosing is Marissa Fairborn from Transformers.

What? Yeah, why? Well, you know, I like well,

it's like I'm not gonna take Lady J away from

Flint, but I think that the daughter, I like

it. She kicks ass and she's able to be able to

keep up with the Autobots. She's a good, yeah.

But yeah, Marissa Fairborn. Oh God, the sad thing

is I now have to use the The... Oh, the burden

hardest to bear. Ah, he's feeling the pressures

of leadership, is that it? Same thing happened

to Optimus Prime after the Matrix was passed

to him. Optimus learned to live with his Geary

and respect it. And now it's Rodimus' turn. Is

there anything we can do to help? Nope. He's

gotta resolve it for himself. Still, maybe he

could use somebody to talk to. Well, you don't

have to. Yes, I do, because that's the best.

I mean, okay, yes, there was, not for the man,

money isn't everything, but that's a whole other.

Well, my favorite Marissa Fairborn quote is when

she tells Blur and Wheely, if you're going to

panic, panic productively. Yeah, absolutely.

That's a great quote. There you go. You're welcome.

And For my answer what I answered in my episode

in case people haven't heard episode 246 which

why haven't you Jessica rabbit hands down no

contest end of story All right, what is the holy

grail of cartoon artifacts the sort of omens

the matrix of leadership the power sword from

he -man? Etc Hmm Well, it definitely definitely

matrix of leadership, uh, oh Geez, okay. This

is gonna be a cheat. But come on. It's iconic.

It's freaking iconic the money man What Scrooge's

money bin? I But if you want to but okay if you

want to narrow it down to something Hold on.

Hold on. Hold on. Hold on. Stop. No, stop. I

refuse that because I asked you earlier If you

could live in any cartoon world where would it

be and why? Scrooge's money bin is not a cartoon

artifact, it is a place. So no, you cannot pick,

like, if you wanted to pick something like the

thunder quack or whatever launch pad's plane

was in the - Okay, but can you let me finish?

I guess. I said, if you want to narrow it down,

which you said you did, instead of the entire

money bin, you could just simply say Scrooge's

number one dime. Okay, that's better. Better?

Okay. It's not. Trish, save us. Help us, Trish,

you're going up. I don't know if I can. I don't

know if I can. See, the problem with the Holy

Grail of cartoon artifacts, question folks, is

that most of the cartoon artifacts are from the

early mid 80s. And by the 90s, they had vehicles

more than they had artifacts. I mean, technically

you could say the Batarang, because technically

that's a cartoon artifact from the 90s. This

is true. And before, but still. Well, you could

also say the ship that brought Superman to Earth.

That's true. No, that's a vehicle! Stop that!

Stop using... There's a huge difference in...

Never mind. Well, somebody would consider said

vehicle an artifact. Okay, technically you're

right. Because of its historic significance.

It's just like some people would say that the

Wright Brothers flyer counts as an artifact.

Even more so since it's not in use. How about

Plank from Ed Ed Eddie? We are now exiting the

cartoon fantasy land. Last question. What is

one piece of advice that you'd give the cartoon

watching fandom in general? Don't discount any

cartoon until you watch it. Give it a chance.

Might surprise you. That's what somebody told

me about Strip -O -Rella, and I have never been

more scarred in my entire life. Well, that's

on you. Of course it is. Eduardo? I don't know.

You know what? I meant to agree with Trish. That's

on you. Hey! Oh, answering the question. Okay,

sorry. For me, I would just say, you know what?

Enjoy. Don't be afraid to enjoy. If you love

these cartoons, don't be afraid. Don't be afraid

to say you enjoy it. There's nothing wrong with

that. I mean, even if you're all about South

Park and Family Guy, if it brings you joy, Go

for it. Yep, absolutely. Alright, that's gonna

do it for us. Would you like to be on the Origins

episodes here at Tooncast? Send an email to feedback

at keycastradio .com with a subject line, Tooncast

Origins guest spot. You must have at least one

year or more of podcast experience, have a good

microphone and be able to accept the Zencast

or link, which basically means you have to have

a PC or Mac, no mobile. We are going to take

a quick break, come back to close the show after

this. So let's see, I skipped the reboot question

because it doesn't seem like you guys watch a

lot of reboots, but I'm sure you have an opinion

on which cartoon series from the past would you

most want to see. Oh, that's more of anyway.

That's a lot of thing anyway. All right. Wrapping

it up, wrapping it up. Oh, my God. It's been

a while since I've done a two -hour recording.

That's actually been a week or so. Recordings

with DJ are usually two hours. No, it was fun.

Absolutely. And once I finally edited it down

into what it's supposed to be and yay. All right.

All right, Toonsters. As always, we are back

here to thank you for joining us. Any final thoughts

from either one of you? Yeah, I still agree with

my wife. Stripperella's all on you. I'm sorry,

I thought Stan Lee was more wholesome. You know

what? Anyway. It happens, it happens. That's

kind of why it throws me for a loop is because

it's Stan Lee's Stripperella. Well, you know,

I mean, when you've had as long a career as Stan

Lee and you start to get older, it's like, you

know, you kind of want to have some fun. So it's

like... He wanted to do it, so more proud to

you, Stan. God rest. Absolutely. And also, God

rest David Warner. He is, I know it's probably

not quite, I know that probably not quite what

race is supposed to be, but he is still going

to be my default, the default voice on your name.

Yeah, he is always going to be the default voice

for Ra's al Ghul because That animated universe

is the only one that says his name right. It's

Raish, not Raz. Yeah. Idiots. Anyway. Well, not

to mention you gotta love the way he says, Detective.

Yeah. Absolutely. Trish, any final thoughts?

Uh... Yo, Joe? Have I told you lately I love
