About this Episode

Mike and Alison Richards dive into the fifth episode of Marvel's animated series as the MCU faces a zombie apocalypse. They discuss the intelligent zombies retaining their superpowers, standout moments like Spider-Man's optimistic survival tips and Scott Lang's dad jokes as a disembodied head, the voice acting (including Hudson Thames as Peter Parker), and the animation quality. The episode also opens with a 9/11 remembrance and includes a story from Kevin Conroy about his volunteer cooking work at Ground Zero in 2001.

Hey, this is Josh Keaton and you are listening

to the Geekcast Radio Network. I am the Watcher.

I am your guide through these vast new realities.

Follow me. And ponder the question... What if...

Hello and welcome to an all -new generation of

Tooncast. This is our 238th episode and I am

one of your hosts, Cf2 and Mike. Joining me is

BAM crew member Allison Richards from these Fortress

of Bailetudes Superman and Lois tapes. Hello.

Hello. How are you? I am exhausted but surviving.

Yes. You survived Dragon Con. You had a blast.

You met a Superman. I totally meant, I meant

a literal ball of sunshine who fits into a Superman

costume. Tyler Huckland is just, or Huckland,

sorry. He is just adorable, amazing, a gentleman,

and I was really honored to not only get to see

his only panel, to get a photograph with him.

to get autographs, but then he also put up with

me for like an hour just kind of hanging out

and chatting with him between signatures. Very

cool, very cool. Very patient man too. Yes. I'm

sure we will get more of Alison's Dragon Con

adventures at the end of the podcast today, folks,

as we are welcoming you to Tooncast and the Geekcast

Radio Network's hashtag superhero Saturdays.

Over the next four weeks, we only have four weeks

left of this, we will be giving you our spoiler

-filled discussions on Marvel Studios' new animated

series, What If, on Disney+. was not one he recognized

this episode five was zombies and i have to admit

and you i don't know if you already know this

or not i am not a zombie person i did not know

that just don't like i don't dislike the whole

zombie thing it's just not my thing kind of thing

i'm not a horror person i'm not Freddy Krueger

scarred me at five years old and I've never looked

back. I respect the genre, but I just can't.

So was it Freddy Krueger with the fingernails

on the pipe or where he pulls his hands up from

the mattress, grabs Johnny Depp and pulls him

aside? Yeah, it was definitely the mattress because

I was laying on my couch at the time. I'm like,

oh crap, Freddy's going to come up from the inside

of my couch. Great. Yes. Yeah, no. No, no, no,

no, no. Poor Johnny Depp. He didn't have a chance.

Yeah. I mean, if he had, you know, ooh. You've

ever seen those super power beat downs that Bat

in the Sun on YouTube does? Freddy Krueger versus

Edward Scissorhands. That would be awesome. That

would be awesome. No, I usually watch Death Battle

for those, mainly because, uh... One of the reoccurring

contributors is Danny Shepard who's part of Ismahawk

and they do a lot of the live action fights.

Nightwing stuff. Yeah. I haven't watched their

stuff in a while. I'll have to catch up with

them. He's also an amazing Nightwing, you know,

cosplayer, actor. So yeah, that's how I found

Danny originally. Very cool, very cool. So folks,

this is season one, episode five, What If Marble

Zombies? And because that this episode is being

released Saturday, September 11th, 2021, I did

not want to do anything too deep, but I didn't

want to also ignore it because there is no what

if scenario that we can envision in this or any

other universe that could erase or replace what

happened 20 years ago today. We here at the GeekCast

Radio Network and TuneCast are going to just

have a moment of silence and then you'll hear

the positive story Kevin Conroy told us back

in 2012 when we interviewed him. So, 9 -11, 20

years, everybody is, we still mourn everyone

that we lost that day. Hi, this is Kevin Conroy

and you're listening to the Geekcast Radio Network.

You had gone to do some cooking duties after

the 9 -11 tragedy to help out in New York. Do

you want to tell that story? You want me to tell

it? Sure. It's got a lot of foul language in

it. Should I clean it up? No, that's fine. We

are so explicit here at the Geekcast Radio Network.

Oh, really? Yes. Okay. Well, you know, I live

in New York. I live in New York, and after the

attack, everyone wanted to help. I mean, the

thing that was amazing, you always see those

pictures of everyone running away from the buildings

as they were coming down with the cover. But

what you don't see any pictures of is everyone

running back. As soon as the dust cleared, people

started running back to try and help people.

And so I called, there was a number set up. Everyone

was being told to go to the Javits Convention

Center. That's where they were coordinating the

volunteers. So I went to the Javits Center, and

they already had everybody they needed. They

had such a huge turnout. They said, look, we've

got everyone we need. We have all the tunnelers.

We have all the diggers. We have overwhelmed

with volunteers. We don't need anybody. So I

was feeling so dejected. I was on my way home

thinking, what am I going to do? I want to help.

And I stopped off at a coffee shop, and there

was a guy there covered with dust. who had just

come from Ground Zero and said, he was talking

to the waitress about how he was working in a

kitchen there. And I said to him, this total

stranger, I said, you know, I just came from

the volunteer place. They told me they didn't

need anybody anymore. He said, do you really

want to volunteer? I said, yeah. So he wrote

down this phone number. He said, call this number.

They need people. This is the kitchen at Ground

Zero. So I called them up and they said that

they did need people. And they said, do you have

any restaurant experience? I said, I'm an actor.

Of course I have restaurant experience. What

do you need? You know, actors can do anything

in a restaurant. So we really need cooks. I said,

well, I worked in a short order cook when I was

going through Juilliard. They said, are you free

now? And I said, yeah, I'm between jobs. They

said, no, we mean right now, like tonight. We

need someone tonight. I said, yeah, I'll be right

there. So I ended up doing the night shift. It

was like from 6 PM to about 6 AM. And it was

a few blocks away from the actual pit. But it

was a big, big like cafeteria that they had commandeered.

There was a restaurant I think called Nino's.

It was a big old restaurant. And they'd taken

it over and all the work crews would come in

covered with dust and soot, just exhausted. And

it was a very hot September. So it was really,

it was a very depressing atmosphere. And there

were these huge work lights set up all over Lower

Manhattan, setting it up. It looked like a moonscape.

because it was a big a big search site and people

would come in there was just a sort of rumbling

kind of melancholy mumble going on because you

know everyone was so overwhelmed by what had

happened and I was working this night shift and

this guy was next to me one night goes so I'm

an architect during my day job what's your day

job I said well I'm an actor He said, yeah, but

do you do some special kind of acting? He said,

I thought I knew your name. I said, well, I really

work in animation. I do voices. He said, I knew

it. You're a Batman. How did you know that? He

said, everybody knows who's Batman. I said, no,

everyone does not know who's Batman. He said,

oh, my god, the guys are going to go crazy if

I tell them that. I said, no one's going to care.

He said, are you crazy? He said, watch. So he

goes out in the dining room and he goes, guys,

guys, you're not going to believe who's been

cooking your dinners. It's Batman! And there

was this long pause, and you hear it from the

back of the auditorium. Bullshit! And then someone

else says, someone else says, make him prove

it! So from back in the kitchen, right, in this

big echoey kitchen that I do, I am vengeance,

I am the knight, I am Batman! And then there's

this long, long silence, you hear it from the

back of the auditorium. Holy fuck, that is Batman!

They all started pouring back into the kitchen

and suddenly you hear this laughter. And this

guy's like, hey, you know that episode where

you and the Joker, you know, I watch that show

all the time with my kids. And you know, hey

man, what's that dated lady like? And everyone

wanted to know everything about the show. And

then the guy who had recognized me, the architect

says, what's it like to be Santa Claus? Because

that's what happened. Santa Claus just got here.

And it was true. It was like suddenly. People

had something else to think about, you know Yeah,

and so I emailed Andrea the next morning at Warner

Brothers and I told her what had happened that

night I wrote it all as a story and I said at

the end of it, you know, what we do is not insignificant

We're already contributing and she said she circulated

that all around Warner Brothers. She said everybody

at Warner Brothers loved that story Yeah, it's

just an amazing story because you know a lot

of you know, and that goes to like, you know

You know, sometimes we will ask a question of,

you know, do you get recognized? You know, on

this, because a lot of times voice actors, you

know, in person don't get recognized unless,

you know, you're at a convention and a big sign

says, hey, this is Kevin Conroy, voice, you know,

I mean... I assumed, I assumed this would be

a completely anonymous job. And for many years

it was. You know, in the early 90s, no one knew

what I was doing. It was when the internet...

developed and you could you know you could just

Google someone's name and then get the picture

and suddenly everyone knew who was Batman you

know it's really since the internet that people

know who's doing what and um for many many years

it was completely anonymous and I was used to

it that way I kind of liked it that way actually

this is Kevin Conway and I am the goddamn Batman

Tony ha ha boy are you guys screwed? What are

you guys that's That sort of seems like overkill.

Alright folks, Season 1, Episode 5. Like we said,

what if Marble Zombies? Oh boy. Why are these

always coming down to friggin' Hank Pym? Seriously?

Like, he's evil, man. Well no, this was Janet

this time. True. But honestly, so I love a good

zombie movie, cause for me, it's just brainless,

gore and entertainment. I think for me zombies

are easier for me to do horror wise than some

other types of horror because of the fact that

there is that fantasy, sci -fi fantasy element

that makes it not real in my head. Whereas in

Other types of horror, you know, it could be

real, you know, you have that that element of

realism so When I watch this it almost kind of

gave me a little bit of a feeling of warm bodies

for a moment Not for the plots not for any plot

similarities But oh my freaking god so many feelings

I'm like, whenever you think of Marvel zombies,

I'm just thinking of people, you know, coming

and cutting the other people down and trying

to save the world. And we did get some of that.

But we also got like a boatload of feels that

we just did not need. Yeah, absolutely. And wow.

Just wow. They are outdoing themselves. Oh, yeah.

Every episode gives you some sort of feeling,

whether it's good or bad. Don't eat me, don't

eat me, don't eat me, don't eat me, don't eat

me. Hey, relax. I'm just your friendly neighborhood

Spider -Man. Oh, yeah? Well, then what the hell

happened to the neighborhood? Like too many great

catastrophes, this one sprang from a place of

love and hope. And, you know, I didn't, you know,

even though I'm not... fan of this genre and

whatever because it is the characters of the

cinematic universe and and all of that I went

into it like okay let's see what happens to all

of them and you know Favreau was having a damn

good time blam blam blam even zombie happy What?

No! No, not Abby. I think it was... It's Hawkeye.

In fact, actually I'm looking at Marvel has an

ad up for their what if from that episode and

what they're selling and It looks like one of

them may actually be no. Let's see. Okay, they

got zombie Wanda Zombie Iron Man's zombie Falcon

zombie cat and oh, no, that's that's zombie Doctor

Strange And then they've got like the little

action figure of Peter Parker with cape. Yep.

Oh my god I think cape is like the the the one

that that saved all of them more than anything

Yo, Rockman haven't seen you in a few millennia.

Give me some Tassel. Yeah. Yeah. Yo Yeah, absolutely

Yeah, zombie hunter Spidey Congratulations, Wes,

but damn Zombie Hunter Spidey Funko Pop is sold

out on poppinofftoys .com Zombie Spidey and Zombie

Wanda are both sold out. Iron Man is still available.

Oh wow, Falcon's sold out. The app's sold out

and the bundle sold out. Well, it's Wes and it's

poppinofftoys, so you know. I was gonna say all

I have to do is just go down there tomorrow because

they literally are 15 minutes down the street

from me. Yep. Absolutely, but you know, had to

do a little bit of promotion there since you're

talking about it. I was like, yeah, yeah, as

soon as I saw the zombie Funko pops, I was like,

even though I'm not into the zombie stuff, yeah,

that zombie hunter Spidey with the cape on is

hilariously awesome. Well, there's also an action

figure, not just a Funko, but there's an actual

action figure with it too. I really, I don't

think I can lose another friend today. So, avenge

us. Yeah, so this episode oh boy I'm surprised.

There's not a Funko of Scott in the little you

know the little collectible case Yes, yes, yes,

yes, I just give them time They'll find a way.

I mean I have actually like collectible Funkos

of like BB8 That's in that that same type of

glass shape for like a collector's thing. And

I know they had an R2D2 one as well. I really

want, I mean, honestly, if they came out with

one with, you know, Scott's head in it, like

a 10 inch one, I would be having that. I would

have that and I would bring it to class and I

would have it on my desk at school. The only

problem with that is that they would have to

Because how Funko does the Marvel and the Star

Wars stuff, all of those are baubles. So they

would have to have the spring on the very bottom

of the head, so the spring would have to attach

to whatever stand it would be on. That would

be hilarious. Oh boy, folks, we went down a Funko

rabbit hole there. Oh my god, and then there

was like a button and you pushed it and Scott

made the zombie dad jokes? Yep, that would be

hilarious. Funko, get on this, please! Yes, please,

Funko, please. That would be hilarious. Scott

mimicking the zombie dad jokes, I was like, holy

crap. Whoa, watch out! She's a man eater! What

are some of your highlights from this one? Well,

first, I really loved how they made these zombies

intelligent. These zombies had all the ability

to use all of their abilities when they were,

you know, their normal superheroes. I mean, you

could still see Dr. Strange had the ability to

cast. So, I mean, that right there shows you

that these are highly intelligent zombies. And

so you have that. I mean, dang, Hawkeye kept

his aim even when he only has half a brain. Yeah,

poor man, Hawkeye. He's had a rough zombie life,

hasn't he? He has, but he still has great aim.

I'm like, oh my god. And also, I want to know

where my zombie Hawkeye Funko is, Funko. But

yeah, I mean, there's that. You had, oh my god,

Hope with all the guilt of this. And, and, um,

you know, um, and Spider -Man still being optimistic.

It's Hope. And anyone who's seen a zombie movie

knows that that's the key to survival. Plus,

it's also your name, and that's gotta mean something.

Oh, kid. How do you do it? I mean, Cape, obviously,

is just, you know, amazing. You know, Bruce's

sacrifice as Hulk, which even though I don't

know if we're going to come back to this when

we hit to the multiverse, but, you know, Hulk

kept Bruce from getting bitten the first time

he was, he was, you know, almost bitten. So there's

nothing to say that Hulk isn't going to go find

them after he finishes and they get away. You

know, so I mean there's all of that Vision and

Wanda. Oh That was so heart -wrenching Yeah,

like I say this this zombie should not have this

many feels No, I think probably though my my

my my my one favorite moment though was happy.

Blam, blam. Are you saying blam? No, blam. And

then how Captain Marvel, was it Captain Marvel

who was with them? When they split up? No, that

was Sharon. And how Sharon just like, you know,

kind of in a way honored him. by letting him

go out with a blam yeah so yeah that was awesome

that was that was really really great yeah i

had a lot of fun with this episode uh again i

wasn't sure what to expect or whatever but as

i've said in the past four episodes we've done

the animation no matter what style or what uh

they you know you can have a different animation

type or a different animation direction in different

episodes to make it look a little different,

but all of these episodes have just been spot

on good. The best part about this one was when

Bruce was watching, when Tony and them first

showed up at the beginning, he's like, oh, let's

dig in a little too, like all the shadows of,

you know what they're doing. You know what the

zombies are doing, you know what he's reacting

to, but you don't actually see them actually

doing the zombie thing. It's in shadow and there

are, you know, hints to it, but just, oh man,

that was so good in the animation. Yeah. Oh,

what was the other one? Um, oh, Bucky and Cap.

And when Bucky uses the shield to take Cap out.

Sorry, pal. Guess this is the end of the line.

We get the whole, uh, this is the end of the

line, but being said to to Cap and you're just

like, oh, ouch. So much ouch. Yeah, that was

that was hilarious. Like, anything with Bucky

in it is great, honestly. Yeah, and I'm glad

we got winter soldier Bucky this time and not

Yeah, what call it not not um Not not pre buck

pre winter soldier Bucky. Yeah Not psycho doesn't

know what he's doing is under control of whatever

hydra thing Yeah, yeah The evil side of the Winter

Soldier. They really had to go for the funsies,

didn't they, with the shower scene? Oh god. I

was like, oh my god, no they didn't do that.

They sure did! Fan service! I didn't mind at

all! Oh my god. You know what? These what -if

episodes, this series, as I've said today and

as I've said in the past episodes that we've

done so far, they are just hitting it out of

the park on every level. It's like we're watching

a whole different, and it is a whole different

version of the Marvel Universe, but it's like

we're watching the last... Two thousand eight

to now so almost no not really 20 years, but

your 10 years But like the last 13 15 whatever

years however long it's been kind of thing like

it's like we're watching a whole new version

You know Especially when they're able to get

the the the the original actors back. I don't

much like I Don't know why Tom Holland didn't

do the voice of Spidey, but at the same time

I don't care because the person who did it Did

an extremely well job of doing it Yeah, actually

kind of like for a minute. I it took me a minute

to realize it wasn't Tom Mm -hmm Yeah, I saw

news articles like every you know the clickbaity

news articles everywhere saying oh Why didn't

Tom Holland return? Oh my god, is this some sort

of blood? I'm like, oh god. Here we go No, because

Tom Holland I think film three movies You know

after endgame that was not spiderman yeah anything

that kind of bugged you about this episode or

was it all good honestly the only thing that

i i i was really like concerned about um a little

bit of the physics on like Peter Parker being

able to do that much tension On the webs and

thankfully cape kept him from becoming squashed

like a bug on the windshield. Yeah Because that

I was waiting for And also like how some of the

people did not get long, you know and bad injury

with that slingshot. I find it really hard to

find things to critique about this show so far.

I mean, the only other thing that I have to wonder

about is I know why we saved Scott, and it's

obviously for the Zombie Dad jokes, but I really

want to know how Scott's head is surviving without

a blood flow. Yeah. Mean that's kind of it feels

like that that is an homage to Futurama Mainly

because that's how you get like, what is it?

Isn't it Ronald Reagan's head? Or is it Nixon's

head? I forget or doesn't they have like a whole

thing of presidents I don't know but like that's

like I could tell that that's an homage to there

because that's exactly the It's like almost the

exact same artistic drawing and style of the

head in a jar. But I don't see anywhere on that

jar for blood flow, heartbeat, you know. oxygen

intake. First of all, the guy's like in this

dome, he's gonna run out of oxygen and that there's

no lungs to take in the oxygen. Yeah, it's like

the biology, you know, you have to suspend your

disbelief for it. But at the same time, it's

like, well, Why did you keep his head if you

brought him back for long did he eat? Same like

why does Chachala only missing a leg? Because

that's only as much as vision fed the zombies

that was just You're right Last year mr. Stark

asked me to join the Avengers. I turned him down

and now they're all gone and I'm still here in

my culture That is not the end They are still

with us, as long as we do not forget them. I

knew he was going to be in this episode. I knew

Chad Wick and T 'Challa were going to be in this

episode. I didn't know how, and I'm glad that

they did not. And I knew they would not do this

because, hello, the guy died. Yeah, but they

wrote these all before he died. I understand

that. But maybe a revision was done where it

was just he's just here kind of like, you know,

it's a captured T 'Challa. He's yes, he doesn't

have a leg, but at least, you know, he hasn't

been fully zombified. Yeah, like, you know, I

don't know. I'm not sure. And I'm not sure how

T 'Challa I know you said he's in other episodes

that are coming up, which that's obviously true,

but like. It's always at this point now that

we've already had the T 'Challa Star -Lord story

and how all that happened. Every time I'm like,

okay, is he going to show up? Is it this episode?

Is it this episode? Like where is he? Like the

next episode, as far as I know, because as of

this recording, I have not seen any actual preview.

The only information I have is from IMDB and

it's Tony with the peace sign up. So it's at

some point during Iron Man 1. Yeah. I don't know.

It's just crazy. What else do we want to talk

about for this one? Like I said, the animation,

the voice acting, oh man. They got pretty much

everybody back. And the ones that they didn't,

I really dug. What's his name? Hudson Thames

is the person that voices Peter Parker here.

Yeah. I kind of get it because he only really

had his mask on for like that first save. The

rest of the episode he had his mask off. So it's

kind of like, hey, it's Peter Parker Spider -Man.

Everybody knows. I mean, after all, everybody

else is a zombie. So most everybody else except

his team kind of thing. But, uh, yeah, no. I

really dug this one. I thought it was great.

I thought it was fun. It was a very different

universe. And I keep noticing where, as I mentioned

last time, where the Watcher shows up in the

background. And I'm kind of glad that, like,

the look, even though the Watcher doesn't really

have, he's more of a, like a masked... Character

kind of thing in his background, but like the

look in his eyes as some of you know during his

scene I was like, oh man, you can tell he wants

to intervene, but he's not going to because he's

only supposed to witness these events Yep Just

so crazy Mm -hmm. Oh Peter Parker's how to survive

so you want to survive the zombie apocalypse

video? Yep Unless, of course, they knew the rules.

New York. Home of the Mets. The Chrysler Building.

Those ladies from Sex and the City. And now,

the Zombie Apocalypse! If you can make it here,

you can make it anywhere. But first, you have

to not get eaten. Step one long sleeves do I

really have to be wearing it happy come on the

safety of the world depends on it and action

zombies Here I come bad zombie The zombie virus

is passed through saliva so the less skin you're

showing the less there is to bite Step two hygiene

zombies are attracted to the smell of human flesh

So the less pheromones you give off the better,

but just one catch never more vulnerable than

when you're in your birthday suit the sneak attack

Your robot arm is waterproof. How handy. Pun

intended. You know all I have to do is squeeze,

right? Okay, okay, easy killer. How about we

skip the shower and grab the body spray? No!

Okay, step three. Always aim for the hair. It's

the only way to kill him. Will you tend that

door? Oh, I was just showing Dr. Banner the orientation

video. Oh, where's Kurt from? Is he one of Scott's

friends in the bit that... Business they started

I'm trying to figure out it. Oh, it's a Friend

and roommate. Yep friend of a man of Scott Lang

and Louise who works as the team's hacker during

heists East and Dave are together known as the

three wombats He appears ant -man and ant -man

in the wasp as well as the Disney Plus animated.

Yeah, so he was in Okay, he was in The Ant -Man

movies You got a puppy in the background somewhere.

No, I don't some dumbass neighbor of mine Let's

let's their dog out and the dog like the dog

was barking at like 3 a .m. One morning it woke

both me and Karen up and it's like I hope they

come out with like a concept art book like how

you get like the art of Like almost every Marvel

movie has a part of book Hope we get an art of

what if because they have like during the credits

these beautiful concept photos of the backgrounds

Yeah, I just want to have a book with all of

those because they are beautiful the detail that

the artists put into it and and just the it evokes

so many different like feelings from how they

use color and, you know, positioning of things.

I'm, yeah, because I'm, I'm flipping through,

you know, the the what if Twitter account and

I'm looking at some of these still shots they

got on here. And they actually have like, for

last week's episode, they have a lot of the still

shots of the concept art from Dr. Strange and

I mean even down to like the like the little

tiny things on the window at Strange's place,

you know, the little tiny line, everything so

much in here that I could just sit here for hours

and stare at them. Yeah, I wish Disney Plus would

do another of their original series. They have

an original series called Disney Gallery Star

Wars the Mandalorian Yeah, and it's it's you

know two seasons of behind -the -scenes stuff

of the Mandalorian I wish they would do that

with what if because I think that would be really

cool Well, they did something with WandaVision.

I thought and I thought you did something with

Loki too. They do They have the... Not Marvel

Legends, it's something else. They have three

different things. Marvel Legends is episodic

for characters, so people don't have to watch

the entire MCU. They can get the gist by watching

these little mini -sodes of what happens to characters

kind of thing. But I forget what it is. But yeah,

Legends is gonna show me... It's just gonna show

me movies. Yeah. No. Yeah. No What if absolutely

love it? It's it's so fun. This episode was really

really fun Yeah, I mean, yeah so good Alright

folks. I think we are gonna take a quick break

come back with some final thoughts We're also

gonna catch up with Allison and get just quick

overview bites of what happened At DragonCon

You are an Avenger. Totally. Big time. Well,

maybe not officially, but, you know, at heart.

Good. The world could use a little heart right

now. All right, folks, we're back here on Tooncast.

This is episode 238, and it has been a week since

Dragon Con weekend. No, it hasn't. It's been

like three days. No, actually, like maybe four

days, four or five days. Time blends together

into a vortex when it's Dragon Con. Yes yes it

does what i'm saying is we released the last

episode a week ago sat saturday so it's been

a week since you were at dragon con kind of thing

with the saturday stuff but yes you were at dragon

con 2021 people can go back to the last episode

and hear all about what else and. Had planned

to do and I'm sure you succeeded in all your

plans. I Accomplished my main objective which

was to meet Tyler hecklin and Unfortunately,

that story is reserved for BAM. So you're gonna

have to listen to my BAM episode that we're recording

But I can tell you about some of the of stuff

cool, so I taught a couple of workshops. I had

a one that was not very well intended, but the

people who were there felt that they got a lot

of good information. It's talking about whether

you as a writer need to get an MFA and what kind

of advantages you get for an MFA in creative

writing over just being a regular writer. And

then I gave another one to adults, which is my

How to Write a Romance workshop. And I feel that

my MFA has actually made that workshop a lot

better for me and for the people who I'm teaching.

I got a lot of people who came up to me afterwards

and they're like, I learned so much in this hour.

I think this has been the best workshop so far.

and you know that just makes me you know really

happy because i'm passionate about you know wanting

to teach people how to do things so i am and

then my you know mike stackpole who runs this

uh runs this workshop program um he uh he and

i were talking and i'm going to come up with

some ideas to try to take on a little bit more

um workshops or give him some new ideas for stuff

to do. So that's going to be fun. And then I

taught a writing workshop for kids. So Aaron

Alston is also my other mentor, you know, and

when we lost him, he was in the middle of planning

on making this writing workshop for children

at Dragon Con. and teaching them the basics of

creative writing. So myself and three of his

other mentees, Brian Young, Janine Spenlove and

Ron Gardner, we all basically came together and

we created this kids workshop that is in memory

of him. We get maybe about anywhere between two

to five kids a year, but these kids that we get,

they are just so creative in their minds. Seeing

what they build is fascinating. We had this one

little girl who was writing a story about these...

And like humanoid bears like bears actually like

was up on two legs walking around like normal

people. But what they do is they eat humans because

the bears need glasses. And if they eat so many

humans and get so many glasses, they become eligible

to like get these like epic glasses. But what

was going on is that if they have Brain my brain

is trying to find words if they Their enemy though

were carrots because carrots were helping You

know people have better eyesight So they were

trying to get rid of all the carrots in the world

But something happened to mutate the carrots

and then the carrots became you know these humanoid

angry carrot beings that were going after the

bears and you know I'm just like sitting here

and I'm like oh my god I want this kid to keep

going I want the rest of this and I want it in

a comic you know a cartoon or a graphic form

this is amazing so you know and then we had another

little girl who had a story about a that was

like all about like human souls and and you know

this kid who was a soul and Only other souls

could see him but there were good souls and there

were bad souls and you know There it was not

Casper. That's for sure but you just like you

just stare and you're like You remember when

you were a kid and you made up stories, you know,

and I'm like these kids These are like nine -year

-old versions of me and I want to just you know

Want to mentor them through writing all of it

and I'm like I can't I only have an hour. What

do I do? You give them the best advice that you

can you leave them with you know something that

they will take forever Yeah, so we kind of help

them. We kind of help them build their character

There was it we asked them to build their character

the world the problem and the plots, you know,

the basic plot idea. And they have that to take

home to go and finish writing their story. So

that's that's one of my favorite things I get

to do every year is that track just because it

honors Erin and also, you know, get to see these

little kids wanting to tell these stories. They're

just fantastic. OK, so then I did a I did a discovery

of witches panel about the TV show. and I could

talk anyone's ear off of that about that show.

I can also talk about the books all day long.

It's one of my favorite book series. Then I have

my Superman and Lois panel that I did. I know

you're going to save that for when you guys do

the actual podcast, but how did that go? Because

I remember when you told me about it, you're

like, yeah, I'm the only one on the podcast panel.

I'm like, how the hell does that happen? Because

at that exact same time, Bailey was interviewing

the Smallville cast and Bethany was on a different

panel and she was going to be covering the super

parenting panel that was in the next time slot

after mine. Right. But yeah, so so yeah, so now

I got that one, which is really cool because

it was there was a woman who was very familiar

with like the the the history for Lois Lane and

her portrayal throughout the decades. We had

a film writer who was talking about how the script

and the characters and the family drama is woven

compared to other shows. We had a gentleman who

was a very big You know, he was a he was a Superman

fan. And so he was looking a little bit more

at like how the portrayals of the characters

were looking back at what we've seen Kurt on

previous shows and such. And yeah, I mean, it

was a good panel. We got a lot of good discussion

going on. It was. We had all agreed when we came

in, we asked how many people had not seen the

show. And then when they all, when we knew who

those people were, we asked them, lower your

hand if you are okay with being spoiled. And

everyone lowered their hand and like, okay, so

this is also going to be a spoiler panel. But

yeah, no, a lot of people were there talking

about it. A lot of people really interested in

it. um you know everyone is just who sees it

has just shown how much they love the family

aspect of the show that's what sold it to everyone

is that it's not a teen drama it's a family drama

so and and so yeah i i I think they did something

right and they're gonna keep that show going

for a couple more seasons. As long as they keep

doing what they're doing now. Awesome, awesome.

So yeah, and then I did a Titans panel at the

end where basically I sat there and I'm just

like, oh my god, Dick Grayson, oh my god, Jason

Todd, your choices. You know, what are you thinking?

But then that's me every month when I pick up

their comics too. It's just normal. Yeah, exactly.

But yeah. Also at DragonCon, now I don't know

if I should take credit for this or not because

if it was already planned, fine, but I had mentioned

to you last episode of our podcast, of this podcast

that, you know, when you, Bethany and Michael

take the picture, you have to be Bethany you

in the middle and then Michael on the end. And

Michael posted the picture and Mike Zumo had

asked him who's who and Bailey's like, so it

took me a second to realize why they wanted to

position this way. But you know, hello. Nope,

it's totally you because I'm the one who told

Bethany that one and Bethany backed me up when

we post Michael. And of course, everyone's like,

I just look so chill. You kind of do. Yeah. And

of course, you know, I had I also, you know,

to make it easier for people to figure out the

difference between me and Bethany, I put the

Hawkeye shirt on that day because I'm like, seriously,

how many times do I talk about Hawkeye in a Superman

show? True, true. That's funny. I'm like, it's

not even the same comic verse. Nope. Nope, nope,

nope. But hey, you never know, crossovers could

happen. Actually, do you know Hawkeye is the

only member from only Marvel character who actually

is a member of the Justice League? I did not

know that. Yep, he is the only one because there's

a four -issue - crossover that Marvel and Avengers

did in the 90s that literally like two event

two issues Marvel put out and they're called

Avengers Justice League and then the two that

DC put out called Justice League Avengers for

JLA Avengers and I happen to own all four issues

of it and they are actually worth a lot of money

if I can get them graded soon but one issue opens

where, um, where, where black canary and Hawkeye

are together and they're, you know, and everybody's

just like, oh yeah, no, he totally is here. He's

totally member of the justice league. And it

turns out in the end that it was kind of like,

you know, this like weird time differential shift,

but no, he He was a member of the Justice League

for that part of that issue. So he is the only

Marvel character who is the member of the Justice

League. That's awesome. That's actually how I

found out about this four issue miniseries because

of the fact that I found it in Hawkeye's biography.

That is so, so cool. Well, what is it? Otto Schmidt

does this amazing series of pictures. that are

of Ollie, Clint, Bobby Morse, who's Mockingbird,

and then Black Canary. And I mean, you look at

the two of them and you put their, you put their,

their wife, ex -wife, girlfriend next to each

of them. And it's like carbon copies of each

other. But the, but the personalities are completely

different. Right. And you can just kind of see,

you know, like, You know Dina and Bobby are going

to get along great because they get to torture

two archers instead of one. Exactly. Yeah. That's

awesome. But yeah, so I'm hoping next year maybe

I'm gonna try to start reaching out more to like

some of the comic tracks. I got to know Kellan

who does the American sci -fi track and so hopefully

I'm gonna get to do some more. stuff with her.

And I'm also, like I say, I'm also hoping to

get some time in the comic book track because

I would really love to be able to, you know,

throw out my random knowledge that I have based

on whatever, you know, arcs are coming up during

that fall, which they're promoting in the comics

track. Very cool. Very cool. Awesome. I don't

know where to go from here, folks, other than

to close the show because between the awesomeness

of Marvel Zombie and the awesomeness of, uh,

of, uh, Allison's Dragon Con trip, I think this

podcast is, uh, is, uh, fully loaded at this

point. So, without any further ado, as always,

we want to thank you for joining us here on Tooncast.

If you'd like to get in contact with us, we'll

leave feedback for the show. There are several

Kelly Thompson and Matthew Rosenberg are just

having like a hilarious back and forth on Twitter

today and I'm fans of both of them and I'm just

like You know, you guys I'm just sitting here

with popcorn. Meanwhile, they're throwing gifts

of Batgirl sticking out her tongue Eddie and

You know land sharks at each other. So Remember

guys King shark is a shark Yes, and also can

I just pitch for for Kelly because I love Kelly

Thompson Like crazy. She's actually going to

be writing the upcoming Kate Bishop comic or

she's involved with it I believe. She's also

the current writer on the Black Widow comic series

that I love and she also has started in the Marvel's

online comic book area a mini comic called It's

Jeff which is Jeff the land shark that came out

from uh, Kate Bishop's West Coast Avengers run

that was a couple of years ago. Yeah. And oh

my god, just the pictures and the art that she's

sharing. I'm like already in love with the series.

Yeah, I was wondering if you were going to be

able to talk about that because I saw the tweet

and I was like, oh hey, yay for you. I was like,

that's awesome. Yeah, no, I love I love I love

talking about my Twitter friends, especially

my comic book author Twitter friends So and yes,

Jeff is just so adorable little land shark, baby

and mind you Jeff's Jeff's owner quote unquote

owner is Gwen pool Oh boy. So yes, so it's also

gonna have Gwenpool probably in it prominently.

is featuring Tony Stark. I don't know yet. They've

kind of... Every time I've assumed which one

is coming next, it's not the one I thought it

was gonna be. Yeah, and if it's something about

Tony with the art, with the thing, it's gonna...

I'm like... If he's in the desert, what is this

gonna be? It's like, if he didn't have shrapnel

in his heart? Or, what, haha, I don't think they're

gonna do this. What if T 'Challa was Iron Man?

I don't think they're gonna do that, but I know

he's in that episode. Who knows, folks? We'll
