About this Episode

TFG1Mike and PecanCtMichael discuss the Phineas and Ferb episodes "Greased Lightning" and "Leave the Busting to Us." They break down the chariot race plot, the introduction of Norm, the comedic cadence of Lulu Busting Jones, and the recurring "Farmer" character voiced by Corey Burton. The hosts also point out notable details, including background gags, animation call-backs, and minor continuity errors.

There's a hundred and four days of summer vacation,

and school comes along just to end it. So the

annual problem for our generation is finding

a good way to spend it. Like maybe building a

rocket or fighting a mummy or climbing up the

Eiffel Tower. Discovering something that doesn't

exist, or giving a monkey a shower. Stirpping

tidal waves, creating nanobots, or locating Frankenstein's

brain. It's over here! Finding a dodo bird, painting

a continent, or driving her sister insane! As

you can see, there's a whole lot of stuff to

do before school starts this fall! So stick with

us, cause Phineas and Ferb are gonna do it all!

So stick with us, cause Phineas and Ferb are

gonna do it all! Hello and welcome to episode

17, day 17 of Palka, the podcast organization

without equal acronym brought to you by the GeekCast

or Radio Network. I am one of your hosts TF2

and Mike. Joining me is Pekonkrop Michael. Hello.

Hey, how's it going? It's going okay now for

a second there. Not even the magic of digital

editing could save this episode. So yeah, we're

on day 17. We've got... Let's see here. We got

some greased lightning and and What's the other

one best lazy day ever or whatever it is? Today

is I leave the bus to us busting to us busting

to You know, I feel like there and maybe it's

reason the way that we're watching these but

we just Ended up watching Phineas and Ferb get

busted parts one and part two yesterday and I'm

like He's saying leave the busting to us didn't

they just do this didn't they and i don't know

so yeah so we got those two episodes or those

two cartoons for this episode of palca uh let's

get the furb to it i guess right sure why not

i can't believe you guys dragged me all the way

over here for this well there's hunky guys in

skirts guys come on look at this this is an actual

replica of an artist interpretation of what some

random guy of no significance believed that the

chariot of asparagus might have looked like And

this is Asparagus, the greatest warrior in all

of Greece. With his golden chariot, he would

win every race. And here he is defeating the

Minotaur, a creature that's half man, half bull.

Asparagus defeated him using the head of Medusa,

a creature so ugly she could turn people to stone

with just one look. Kinda reminds me of Candice.

It does not look like me. I know what we're gonna

do today. We're gonna have our own chariot race

like, hey, where's Perry? Agent P. Over here!

Sorry to disturb you at the museum. We've just

been informed that Doofenshmirtz has created

a machine to rid the world of platypuses. Uh,

platypi. Platy people? Whatever. We've tracked

Doofenshmirtz to the old abandoned movie house.

So, get going. And don't look up my skirt. Okay.

The race will start here at home, then through

the streets of Danville and over to the park.

From there we make our way past Paul Bunyan's

pancake house. But not too good, eh? and finish

up the steps of the museum. Hey, boys, whatcha

doin'? Just mapping out our route for the big

chariot race we're gonna have. Oh, excellent.

Well, it's good to see you boys taking an interest

in Greek mythology. I'm doing the same. I've

got over 12 hours of gladiator movies here I

wanna watch. Nice hat, Mr. Flynn. Thank you,

Isabella. It's my movie -watching hat. Isabella,

we're gonna have the greatest race in history,

complete with helmets and armor and super -cool

chariots with horses. Spread the word! Spread

the word! Wait! what time in about an hour or

so where's it gonna be here who am i telling

again just spread the word oh and tell them to

bring gladiator gear all right folks grease lightning

is the first cartoon of the day phineas and ferb

have a chariot race with buford belgiet isabella

and the fireside girls as well as candice uh

meanwhile dr duven schmerz creates norm a robotic

man designed to destroy Platypuses, platypeople,

platypi, who knows? Who knows? Yeah, I forgot

how good this one was. I really, really liked

this episode. Yeah, like I said, I forgot how

good it was, because I look at some of these

titles and some of them I know by heart, like,

oh, I remember what that episode is, and I look

at other ones like this and I'm like, Greased

Lightning, Greased Lightning, oh! That's the

chariot race through through downtown, Danville

and you know we get You know a restaurant where

you know Paul Bunyan's where the food is good,

but not too good a not too good a oh My god,

that was very Australian. I'm sorry. We're not

too good a That's funny Paul Bunyan Australian

outback Paul Bunyan from the outback That's funny.

Talk about a Bloomin' Onion. A Bloomin' Onion

named Paul Bunyan. Paul Bunyan, Bloomin' Onion.

Where the Bloomin' Onions are good, but not good.

Not that good. Oh, that's true. Alright. This

is a knife. Yeah, that's a knife. This is 30

seconds, you'll never get back, I'm sorry. Yeah,

it's alright. So they're having a chariot race

that one looks just like Candice. Oh, come on.

I do not have wheels You know, I thought was

really funny was uh the Greek hero aspar agas

Yeah Greek for asparagus. Yes That's asparagus

asparagus, that's how you pronounce it I haven't

written phonetically here as par agus. What is

it? What does it sounds like asparagus? It's

just a leafy green vegetable no hero there Maybe

it's a maybe it's a topping on a Greek hero sandwich

or something who knows Maybe I've never been

Greek, I don't know. It's all Greek, folks. The

Danville Museum makes another appearance. Yep.

Which is cool. I wasn't sure if that was the

same museum, or? Yeah, they don't get a new wing

until the future, so yeah, it's the same museum.

That's right. The Time Machines and Antiquities

wing. What did you think of the Phineas and Ferb

activity of a chariot race based on Lawrence

wanting to watch 12 hours of gladiator movie?

Hey, boys, what you doing? Yeah, I can't do Rich

O 'Brien, but he's like, hey, boys, what you

doing? That was I thought it was funny because

it's the typical Isabella Isabella line. Yeah,

I like it when they mix it up a little bit I

thought the first thing that came to mind Back

to gladiator movies is that scene from airplane?

You like gladiator movies Tommy Have to go back

and find that clip it's fun. Yeah, I know you've

seen it cuz you like It's been a long time. The

only thing I really remember from airplane is

clearance, Clarence. Clarence. Oh, I have a tricky

problem. He throws that in the space. Uh, the,

uh, the autopilot. Oh yeah. The autopilot. Good.

Uh, so many site gags. Right up your alley, man.

So they're gonna so they're gonna have this this

giant chariot race and Isabella keeps running

across the driveway like where's it gonna be

and blah blah blah It's like she's gonna run

through the fence of the people that live next

door to Phineas to go tell everybody and I'm

like wait What what happens there spread the

word? Go to the Googleplex it was there was a

man. There was a scene in the I'm gonna go all

Star Wars -y here. But there was a scene in Return

of the Jedi where Han Solo's telling C -3PO to

translate certain things to the Ewoks form, you

know? Yeah. And he keeps calling them back. Wait,

wait, wait. Come back over here. Wait, wait,

wait. Come back over here. Wait, wait, wait.

Hurry it up, will ya? Yeah. That's what this

reminded me of. Yeah, that's so true. During

the race... Everybody has cool stuff except for

Phineas and Ferb. They have cup holders. That's

just awesome. It is awesome. Depends on what

they have. I mean, do you think they're tea drinkers

or coffee drinkers or just hot chocolate? Probably

just hot chocolate. Yeah. After all, they had

that whole debacle with the robots in the coffee

franchise. That's right, the coffee and tea.

I forgot what it was called. The funny thing

is we have a here in Louisville, Kentucky. We

have a local restaurant here called the twig

and leaf The twig and berries Oh twig and leaf

So during the race dicks I'm talking about dicks

That is an in you and don't leave it alone During

the race we have what is probably the the funniest

thing I've seen in Belgium do at this point.

That's right. Use my head Eat sparks my opponents

It's funny And then later, Buford's like, we'll

have to use your head again. He used his head

a lot. Yeah. He had a very versatile head. Yeah.

But the best part of this episode? Norm! Yeah,

it's the appearance of Norm. First appearance.

First appearance of Norm. The greatest enemy

of the platypus is man. hi there my name is norm

norm i'm like norm is awesome out of all you

know every time we see like a new character here

early on in this first season it's like is this

guy gonna be a recurring character is this guy

gonna be a recurring character norm is easily

the best recurring character yeah norm is norm

is essentially the he's dr doofenshmirtz's carl

Yeah, yeah, he really is. Yeah, I mean he hasn't

really on a gram now has Carl Yeah, and dr. Goof

and Schmertz has had his daughter Vanessa, but

that's his daughter I mean another thing and

it's not the same thing and you know now he's

got norm and Norm's pretty awesome Norm is awesome

Yeah, but you get a very good sense of norms

personality even in this first appearance Absolutely.

Yeah What is that a minotaur? my name is norm

it's norm the minotaur it's a minotaur my name

is norm norm the minotaur have you seen my keys

you know he's just trying to trying to quote

all these normal man quotes and it's it's hilarious

coming out of him it's just too funny secretly

i'm very lonely inside You know, we see norm

and suddenly the B story completely overshadows

the a story Yeah, it's like, you know, all I

really care about is an arm. I'll take a whole

half hour of norm Just where are my keys, you

know? It's time for Oh God, what does he always

serving? Donut donuts muffins Norm was easily

the best side character. Norm is easily the best

new character that we get introduced to at this

point. And his excellence just continues on as

the series continues on. I think they try to

eventually one -up Norm when they introduce...

God Ryan and all those guys that have loved the

show for the last 17 days are gonna kill me for

not remembering this the kid Elliot or no Irving

Oliver Irving with the Super fan. Oh, yeah when

when they eventually introduced Irving he they

they try to one -up the awesomeness that is norm

but uh... now so far norm is easily the best

new character yeah you can't one -up norm i never

liked erving i never understood erving as a character

he's got his moments uh... he's got his moments

so we get to the end of the episode Everyone's

like cheering. It's it's a minotaur and then

Candice Turns him to stone Everybody freaks out.

Not really. She doesn't really everyone thinks

she does. Well, it's just funny because he freezes

and everyone goes It's 20 20 foot guy walks in

Freezes and they all go she turned him the stone

It's it's it's funny and It's all funny. This

is just a really good That's so hard yeah the

whole episode they're basically saying Candice

is Medusa Well, yeah, cuz they give her the snake

hat and the yeah the snake helmet I guess that

doesn't look very sturdy at all No, and then

she's to at the end of it. She starts looking

at all these already stone statues, and she's

like oh my god Running gag clearly I turned them

all the stone, too This is like okay for she's

gone no still not looking Yeah, yeah that counts

as two individual lines the The A story and the

B story really, like the Phoenix and Ferb adventure

and the Doofenshmirtz stuff with Norm, really,

they tie together well in this because Norm eventually

becomes the villain for both plots. And I really,

really dug that. I thought the other cool thing

was the old abandoned movie theater. Like, does

it really need to, if it's old and abandoned,

does it really need to have a sign up that says

private screening? The damn thing is closed.

And then some strange kid comes in off the street

to watch. I paid for my ticket. It's abandoned.

Who did you pay? Yeah. Hello, who are you? I

bought a ticket to this plot. That's right. Just

roll the film. It's like, you know, if you're

really evil, you just kill him right there. Just

stab him in the face and be done with it because,

you know, who's going to know it's abandoned?

And I'm just saying I would have murdered him.

What else did you like about this one? Oh, you

know, I I really enjoyed it. I'm trying to think

No, I think that's I think I've exhausted my

thoughts but Yeah, really, you know, I think

the best thing I can say is that there there

were no there were no parts of this I didn't

like Right. I wasn't I'm not gonna nitpick or

anything. I'm more than happy to give it a five

Yeah, yeah, there's nothing here really to nitpick

everything fell into place every I Don't necessarily

want to say stereotype that they normally use

but all of their plot lines every you know Moment

that we always see in every episode worked very

well together and I don't eat like I Don't have

any nitpicks for this one either. So I think

we're gonna leave the busting decan this so I'll

be back after this They've done it again! Just

let me drop off the groceries. This was the best

ride ever, guys! Ooh, that was a very fabulous

ride. Now, can you send us back to Space Station,

Bats? Yeah, this is gonna be bad. Look, look,

look! Okay, tell me you don't see a giant enormous

ferris wheel in the backyard. All right. I don't

see a giant enormous ferris wheel in the backyard.

Hi, Mom. Hi, kids. Why don't you come in for

snacks? Why don't you come in for some snacks?

Oh, there you are, Perry. Oh, there you are,

Perry. And Ferb says... You know gladiators were

Roman, not Greek. It's always the same thing

every day. The same insane routine. My life is

like a bad sitcom. Do you live in the Danville

area and want to bust your brothers? Then call

now and you can be on the next episode of Bust

'em! Yes, yes! When you're bothered by your brothers,

and you can't convince your mother, and you don't

think you can take another day, don't swear a

cuss. He's got your back against the wall, and

you think you've tried it all. There's a number

you should call, don't throw them underneath

the bus. Just leave the bus, stay to us. Bustem,

bustem, bustem. Operators are standing by. Hello,

Bustem? Do I have a show for you? It is time

to leave the busting to us. Upset that her brothers

always get off scot -free, Candice finds a show

called Bust 'em that goes around filming little

brothers to get them into trouble. Meanwhile,

Heinz Dufrin Schmertz recalls his failed magic

career and decides to create a new Ice Age. Poor

Dr. D. He just can't catch a break, a skunk in

every act. Poor guy. You know, I want to say

every episode here, we talk about the established

standard cliches that happen in every episode.

And here, even Candice recognizes that there's

these standards. You know spiel that goes on

and she's Ferris Bueller in us. She's basically

telling us Why don't you come in for some snacks?

Yeah, and there you are Perry and Ferb says,

you know, yeah Yeah, she's calling it calling

it line for line. Well, that's because it's because

of the way the episode is and because of the

title and leave the busting to us and because

she basically has to explain her day to this

lulu busting jones uh... political to the buster

you know the question who does the voice for

lulu busting yeah i figured you would have looked

it up already uh... what else did you like about

this one Okay No, the funny thing is she's totally

mad I'm here damn it. Yes. She I'll let you type

well while I describe I'm not You're going off

to the wiki to look it up right now I can tell

just You know, you always complain about me doing

the fourth wall in the behinds behind the scenes

shit and look what you're doing right now Let

me expose my thoughts on Lulu while you do the

looky -looky but uh she's no i was gonna say

she's manic she's just non -stop she has this

cadence to her voice it's really fast uh and

she says things that i'm not sure if they got

approval for she said if a squirrel breaks wind

we'll have it on tape and then camera eight yeah

no it was more of a squeak it was a i'm like

Potty humor, I love potty humor. Made me giggle.

You've got it by now, right? Yeah. All right,

go ahead. Oh, OK. Who is it? Did you ever watch

the show News Radio on NBC? Ah, that was a long

time ago. Are you serious? No, I'm serious. A

long time ago. That was the last time. She was

the secretary, Beth, in News Radio from 95 to

98. see now I say 95 of the 98 is a long time

ago and you go oh is it yeah dude that was like

20 years ago anyway so anyway what else has she

been a bunch of stuff I can't place she was she

was in Finding Nemo she was in Mouse Hunt she

was in Pushing Tin She was in den brother on

Disney Channel Let's see she was on the three

sisters Show she was on see She was on the Seinfeld

episodes called the secretary and the race She

was in Murphy rat Murphy Brown I Think my grandma

watched that once Anyway suffice to say I can't

place the name But she did a fantastic job. I

really liked this character Just based on You

know the the the cadence of her voice the way

she played Played the role. I really liked it

and the potty humor because you don't get that

very often You know it doesn't for occasionally

right, but but she was talking so fast. It's

just kind of Squeaked by no pun intended Yeah,

yeah, it she she squeaked that one out right

there on camera eight Yeah So there was the the

the inator had inator twice Gluminator 3000 inator,

you know gloom in a tour 3000 in a tour It makes

you depressed? It's supposed to be a weather

machine. It's a weather machine, that's right,

because it makes a tornado. Yeah. He wants it

to be, he basically, yeah, it makes the tornado,

but he wants it to make, you know, really, really,

really bad weather so everyone will just be depressed

and not, you know, be so happy. Okay. That's

still, we're 17 days into 104 days of summer

here, and that's still my biggest gripe about

the show. Doofenshmirtz's plots, and I get it,

that's the joke. Not really trying to take over

the dry state area. Honestly, I think this might

have been like a Megatron plot from old G1 Transformers.

Yeah, master plan. He knows the episode. Of course.

I know all the episodes. The giant ferris wheel

is kind of awesome. The giant ferris wheel has

the first appearance of the two astronauts that

we will eventually see later. Oh, okay. The two

astronaut guys that actually, they first appear

here, and we will see them later. Later when?

It's when Phineas and Ferb eventually go into

the future or something or other. It's not the

future episodes, but it's... There was an episode

where they were wanting to wish one of them a

happy birthday, Sergey or whatever his name is,

and it doesn't happen until like the year 3000,

and it's like this... holographic baby fur wishing

the guy a happy birthday. They remembered. That's

so weird. Okay. So yeah, we get the astronauts

here. Yeah. Lulu is as crazy as Candice, but

she's a little more so crazy. And the reason

why she's more crazy than Candice is because

all she wants to bust her brother from doing

is scratching the plates or breaking the records

or breaking the plates and scratching the right

like Breaking dishes and scratching records.

That's not that That's not an elevator to the

moon. That's quite the same at the epic water

slide It's yeah, it's not the roller coaster

that that started at all that that first day

of summer, right? I See Perry the platypus you

fell for the fake window trick The only giant

sticker I had was of me in the bathroom and you

tried to swing into it so You get what you get

was coming to you, buddy Perry the platypus.

Oh, I see you I fell for the fake Perry the platypus.

I'm like, we're how did that even happen? You

know what I like I like first appearances Yeah,

and this was the first appearance of droopy the

henpecked husband Yep, I don't know if he has

a real name. He might have a list him as the

farmer and the farmers wife Because I I was looking

at at his quotes earlier. Yeah The rabbits aren't

going to fall out of the sky right in her hand

Yeah, that happens every time I mean and when

I say every time I mean, this is a recurring

character Yeah, these two, this married couple,

this is their first appearance. And the husband

is always starting stuff without actually following

through. So the B story or the A story can follow

through for him and basically make the wife look

bad. Well, yeah. Seriously, because there's one

episode where she says something, it happens.

And then she goes, a million dollars just doesn't

fall right out of the sky he's like it doesn't

work like that well how does she she gets really

fed up well how does it work doesn't work that

way that's funny because yeah he has a very droopy

-esque voice you know yeah and i again i'm showing

my age here you're showing your age oh your love

of ancient ass uh cartoons, but Yeah, if you

remember droopy, then you had an awesome childhood

Hell anybody that was born Between well the time

droopy came out and the time Roger Rabbit came

out everybody remembers droopy You know from

who framed Roger Rabbit in the in the elevator

yeah, you know so There you go. Anyway, the voice

reminds me it's like someone's trying to do the

droopy voice But yeah, I like that character.

He didn't actually have a name so I named him

Yes, but no I I love those characters because

it's such a It's such a cool thing that they're

doing with that because it's always interesting

to see where Where they end up and what they

end up doing These weird things have to show

up somewhere, you know, it's like the water slide

Isn't going to just disappear. It's gonna have

to be repurposed by somebody, you know, yeah

Yeah, the only thing they list them as is Farmer

and Farmer's Wife. They don't actually have...

In this specific episode, they don't give them

actual names. Now, the interesting thing is that

Cory Burton, Shockwave himself, Spike from Transformers

Generation 1 is Droopy. He is the Farmer. Cory

can do anything. Yes, Cory can do everything

everything but he's listed as like is he listed

like as other voices In the credit in the credits,

it's listed as additional voices, but they do

credit him as being the voice of the farmer on

this Jennifer L Hughes does the voice of his

wife I'm trying to look really what else? Yeah,

I have like a separate person who for that one

line Actually two lines because it happened twice

like well, she's in hands aren't gonna fall out

of the sky Multiple things yeah, but but again,

you know they're according to their Contracts

a voice actor can do up to three voices and there's

no reason why Oh Caroline Ria can't couldn't

Do that voice. Yeah, but it doesn't matter. It's

it's still interesting that it's a different

voice plus. She's worked on some other She was

She was a singer on rock rose modern life. She

did a voice in the Tarzan movie from 1999 And

then pretty much the rest of it is her working

as the farmers wife and other additional voices

singers for Phineas and Ferb The farmer's wife

appears in one two three four five like seven

episodes of the show Huh, so yeah recurring character.

Yeah, absolutely So did anyone else get a twister

vibe at the end of this oh Yeah, I mean come

on Am I supposed to... Oh wait, I'm supposed

to turn into the skin. Yeah. Tornado eats the

water slide. Doof steals the car. Tornado eats

the car. Or van, yeah. He eats the van. Tornado

eats the van. They're so nice of them to leave

the keys inside. This one was funny. I liked

it. Don't I don't want to say I didn't like it

as much as grease lightning, but but grease lightning

is a hard one the top Hmm they have I'm really

surprised this wasn't like a two -part adventure

with grease lightning in this because they verb

basically calls back to grease lightning When

he says that you know gladiators were Roman not

Greek right? That's a callback to the previous

cartoon we just talked about so My favorite part

other than the farmer and his wife the top hat

bunny gun I want a top hat bunny gun He puts

it on full automatic and it's just bunnies everywhere

bunnies all the way down Yeah Maybe that's where

they got the idea for Dennis the rogue rabbit

You know bunnies aren't just gonna fall out of

the sky I Can't believe you bought a rabbit farm

and didn't bother to buy any rabbits rabbits

aren't just gonna fall out of the crap That's

funny, what would you give leave the busting

to us You know, I I really liked it and again,

I really can't think of anything I didn't like

about it I I Have the certain amount of cognitive

dissonance when it comes to giving two episodes

a five Mm -hmm, you know in two fives In a row

that almost seems like it shouldn't happen, but

I'm leaning toward that. Yeah four and a half

at least You've seen varsity blues, right? No,

I think that's football, right? Yes, we've known

each other what seven years now What part of

my personality lends itself to football? Okay.

Yeah, it's a movie about high school football

in West Canaan, Texas, but it's got Paul Walker,

it's got Ron Lester when he was still fat, and

his character in there is Billy Bob. They end

up going to a strip joint. And because they find

out that their teacher is stripping to supplement

her income, he sits there and goes, a tan! Ten!

Obviously, I bleeped the f word there. Of course

you did, yes. And all's I can think of is you're

saying, you know, double rating and double fives.

All I can think of is a Furbin Ten! Furbin Ten.

Alright then. I have to give it a four and a

half. I wanted to murder Lulu after five seconds

listening to her. Really? No, hey, I'm not saying

I'd want to date her. I just found her to be

an interesting character. I totally would have

dated the camera girl, though. Yeah, Fifi was

pretty cool So what am I supposed to be filming

that just faints right out of the picture Anything

else on Bustum's Leave the busting to us. No,

not really. I mean, you know, it's funny is they

they use the term busting so much and yet there's

There are no callbacks to Ghostbusters. You think

there would be. You think at some point someone's

going to have a proton pack. There is no gatekeeper.

There is no key master. There is no slimer. There

is only Zool. And on that note, folks, we're

going to take a quick break and come back with

final thoughts after this. Comfy, Perry the Platypus?

I've prepared something special just for you.

You see, until now, every attempt to eradicate

you has been foiled. Then I came across him.

Excuse me, who are you and what are you doing

here? I bought a ticket to see this movie. Okay,

just roll the film Who is the enemy of the platypuses

or platypi or platy people? Well, you know what

I mean The platypus is one of our greatest friends

in nature a humble but key component in Mother

Nature's delicate cycle of life But as of late

worldwide populations have been declining to

near endangerment But why who is the enemy of

the platypuses or well, you know what I mean?

This is the best platypus movie I have ever seen.

Historically, the enemies of the platypus were

well known. The poisonous swamp viper, the snaggletoothed

badger, and duplicating imitatable stunts seen

on television. But there is a new enemy of the

platypus. One whose tireless development paves

over the platypus's woodland homes. The greatest

enemy of the platypus is man. Hi there. You see,

Perry the Platypus? For years I've been trying

to rid myself of you with traps and bombs and

poisonous gas and automatic tennis ball machines.

I don't even know what I was thinking back then,

but now I have the ultimate platypus elimination

weapon. Perry the Platypus! Recoil in horror!

That's my new creation! A giant! Killer! Robot!

Man! My name is Norm. The enemy of the platypus
