About this Episode

Mike and PecanCtMichael discuss the Phineas and Ferb two-part episode "One Good Scare Ought To Do It!" The hosts analyze the introduction of the character Susie Johnson, the haunted house plot, and Perry's encounter with Dr. Doofenshmirtz. They also debate the show's artistic use of geometric shapes and their general preference for longer, two-part episodes over shorter segments.

There's a hundred and four days of summer vacation,

then school comes along just to end it. So the

annual problem for our generation is finding

a good way to spend it. Like maybe building a

rocket, or fighting a mummy, or climbing up the

Eiffel Tower. Discovering something that doesn't

exist, or giving a monkey a shower. Surfing tidal

waves, creating nanobots, or locating Frankenstein's

brain. Finding a dodo bird, painting a continent,

or driving our sister insane! Vinius! As you

can see, there's a whole lot of stuff to do before

school starts this fall! Come on, Barry! So stick

with us, cause Vinius and Ferb are gonna do it

all! So stick with us, cause Vinius and Ferb

are gonna do - Hello and welcome to episode 9

of Palka brought to you by the GeekCast Radio

Network. I'm one of your hosts here, Joe Mike,

and joining me, as always, is Pecan Court Michael.

Hello. Hey, how's it going? It's going. Today

is the ninth day of summer, and this means that

it is time to talk more Phineas and Ferb. This

is going to be our second two -parter. One good

scare ought to do it. You sure this is the ninth

day? Yeah. I thought the last one was the ninth

day. No, last one was the eighth day. I might

have misspoken. I've lost count. We're nine days

into this, folks, and we both already lost count.

Great. All right, we're going to get to the episode

after this. And Candice, honey? Yes, Mom? I hope

you're not planning on talking to that banana

all afternoon. Ladies and platypuses, introducing

the latest party craze to sweep the nation, the

amazing mariachi tree. I think the lesson here

is never drink so much chocolate milk before

planning our day's activity. Bye guys, sorry.

Good work there though. There's that smile, Archero.

Gracias. Hi, Phineas. Oh, hi Isabella. Whatcha

do? Are you okay? Yeah, I just came by to see

whatcha do -ing. Wow, that's a bad case of the

hiccups you got there. I know, they're driving

me crazy. Not to fear, Isabella. Ferb and I will

help you cure your hiccups. Hey. Where's Perry?

Alright folks, with this being a two -parter,

we just have one full description here. When

Isabella is cursed with a bad case of the hiccups,

Phineas decides to build her a super haunted

house to scare him out of her. Meanwhile, Perry

stops Dr. Doofenshmirtz from destroying his old

mentor's hideout. And Candice tries to go to

Jeremy's house, but his evil sister Susie stops

her. Dun dun dun. So we do have a lot of firsts

here a lot of firsts going on number one and

probably the biggest one the introduction of

little Susie Johnson That's not the biggest one

there's more going on here No, no, no, I'm saying

as far as character wise Probably the the biggest

setup and the biggest introduction here is the

rivalry between Susie and Candace right, right.

Okay, I'll buy that They even go so far. I mean,

not only do they introduce Susie, but they introduce

Buford's extreme fear of Susie. Yeah. That's

funny. Yeah, poor Buford. He's like, what? She's

evil. And then Baljeet, a failed math test. That's

right. Okay, then we'll see you later. You can

run, but it won't be to the college of your choice.

I tell you I Can't write to the college of your

choice For him that's gonna be really scary So

this plot's pretty straightforward and through

the beat both the a pop plot and the B plot I

think are really really well done Neither one.

Like... Okay, sure, we could probably nitpick

the fact that... Doofenshmirtz is... We can nitpick

the fact that he doesn't really have a scheme.

He's doing an evil friend a favor by destroying

his hideout. That's the scheme. Destroying the

hideout? Like, really? Seriously? With a descent

evaporator? Descent evaporator. Innator. Oh,

he did call it innator. Okay, I wasn't sure if

he did. No, I don't think he did. That was my

two cents. Oh, yeah, it should have been a dis

evaporator Dis evaporator inator. I don't even

know that's hard to say Yeah, it's very hard

to say might be why they didn't call it the inator

But it's definitely an innate this one has an

inator You know unlike um, oh Craminy was it

jerked us away. There was no one ater Yeah, toward

the world toward the world had no one ater. Oh,

that's right Yeah, they should have had two inators

in this one. They should have had a decininator

and a vaporinator and then had them work in tandem

because technically this is a double episode.

So the A story, do you believe that scaring the

hiccups out of people works? I don't believe

it works. I don't think that's how the human

body works actually. How about drinking a glass

of water or? Only if you're standing on your

head Yeah, what's that old bar joke? There's

an old bar joker a guy with the hiccups walks

into a bar He goes into the bartender the bartender

says I cured a guy the hiccups once how bartender

pulls a gun on him and he just Miraculously cured

or acutely sure Having firearms pulled on me.

I often consider miraculous No, I'm saying miraculous

after I change my shorts and I go that was a

miraculous occurrence Yes, yes we do moments

you have a lot of notes I'm gonna go first You

have a lot of notes which is fine. Alright, so

I hope you're not planning to talk to that banana

all afternoon Never drink so much chocolate milk

before our daily activities ain't that the truth

Chocolate milk is the devil It's like true move

What well true move is chocolate milk? Well,

I don't think it's actually chocolate. I think

it's like a chocolate drink But it's fortified

with vitamins and you get you get a little devil

on one shoulder. This is drink You know, drinks

it because it's tasty, and then a little angel

on the other shoulder that says, drink it because

it's good for you. Well, true moo is a part of

the beans and milk. It's not a separate drink.

I've bought it before. It's tasty. I'm not going

to complain about it. I'm just saying. It's essentially

really thick chocolate milk. Anyway, this is

the first time... I believe that Perry goes in

the wrong place for his hideout. He jumps in

the wrong trash can. I kind of felt bad for him.

Aw man! That's gotta suck to be you. Nine times

out of ten, whatever he jumps into is gonna be

a special chute. Or an elevator or something

that takes him there. This just happened to be

the tenth time. There you go. It's kind of like

that old saying, four out of five dentists approve

of this toothpaste. Why doesn't the fifth one

approve? Well, we don't know. He is a lot of

toothpaste. As I said, Suzy debuts here. For

me, I'm so like... Jen, she's all about the scary

stuff and the supernatural and all that. I'm

so not. My mom raised me watching horror movies.

It scarred me for life. I haven't watched a horror

movie in probably 31 years, I would say. Really?

Yeah, I don't do horror at all. At least a lot

of fun. Haunted houses, yay or nay for you. I

say nay. I love haunted houses, but I can't do

them because Christy does not love them. She

will wet herself. I shouldn't say that, it was

just that once. When we first started dating,

we went to a haunted house nearby and she literally

froze up and I had to drag her away from the

guy with the chainsaw. The other reason is here,

I don't think they still do it, but like I said

about 20 years ago, 95, 96, somewhere around

there, might have been 94, they had Nightmare

Forest. So it's essentially a haunted house on

the floor. It's essentially that, you know, and

I got lost and went off the path and no idea

where the hell I was. And I'm like, yeah, no.

So I went off the path. Yeah, I know. Nowadays,

they have the they not only they have lights

along the path, so you don't leave. Yeah, they're

there. There's people running at you with chainsaws,

but you couldn't possibly leave the path. Yeah,

the Little side note before you get into here

is the funny thing is here now in Louisville

We have this business called Louisville escape

They basically have different theme rooms where

you and a bunch of your friends go in there And

you have to figure out in a certain amount of

time how to escape the room. Yeah, we have something

similar Yeah, so that so there's that all right

Hit me with your best shot on the positives Well

the first thing that we haven't seen before.

Bigger than Suzy. The Perry theme song. Yep,

that's true. Yep. And my first thought was, man,

this must be just a slow story day because they

have like the entire Perry theme song here. I

didn't realize it was a double parter and they

had plenty of time and probably needed an extra

song, right? But yeah, they did the whole Perry

song, including a montage. Yep, so that was kind

of cool. I I appreciated that And then that happens

all the way to the to the the secret layer of

professor destructicon Which is an awesome name

the first time that I rewatch this because I

actually watched this episode twice because as

I said I get the audio and stuff for My brain

immediately went professor decepticon. What's

actually copyright infringement? That's that

right somebody call Aaron Archer, he's gonna

sue somebody Not his job anymore, but yeah, oh

no, it's not anymore Yeah, professor destructicon

wanted to set fire to the Sun It was a little

I told Kevin to get over with it. It's a giant

ball of fire to fire Kevin destructicon That's

an awesome name. If I ever get around to renaming

myself, I would probably be Michael Destructicon.

I don't see how that would fit on my driver's

license though. That's a bit long. It's funny

because when Perry gets there, he doesn't realize

it, but there's all these storyboards all the

way around the room. And it's like shouldn't

he have seen the storyboards he couldn't yeah

I mean he could have looked around the room a

little bit before you swooped in What do you

say? Hey though who though? What the hell the

when we get to here when we catch us up to the

story That's right. That's right. Good to hear

There's a there's a line here worry He says period

of platypus. Are you just being a jerk? He says

are you not telling me because you can't talk

or you're just being a jerk? He's just being

a jerk. It is like no. He's totally being a jerk.

He's got your keys under his foot That was awful

He's two foot smarts isn't even Doing anything

evil here. I mean unless no unless there's like

some type of ecological disaster coming because

he's blowing up an island in the middle of the

uh... was that notion is the tristate area near

an ocean it's it's supposedly it's near everything

i don't know that it kind of looks like it's

out there in the ocean honestly i'm really surprised

you know this isn't in the middle of the parry

story is in the tristate area though because

member major monogram said he wins it shows a

map where he's actually out middle of the sea

others Completely separate from the tri -state

area So yeah, that is why they had time to do

the perry theme song because he had this he had

to get all the way out there You can call him

agent P Yeah So there's that and The Wow, you

know, it's funny. I don't have any any other

but there's a lot going on. I mean, he's got

like an island he has to blow up. He has an escape

jet. This is the first time he's ever had an

escape jet. He's a pilot. How cool is that, man?

Anyway. But also going on is this haunted house.

That has seems to have everything in it. There's

a there's a failed math test. There's, uh, there's

a boy dressed as a girl. There's a big Susie

Johnson. In you and don't. Uh, Fervous - Dang,

they keep calling - Jeremy calls, or is it, uh,

Phineas says - You're scared of little Susie

J. So he calls her little Susie Johnson. Little

Susie Johnson. You don't know, man. You don't

know. It's funny. I've seen things. Terrible

things. Terrible, terrible things. Fervous Frankenstein.

And if I'm not mistaken, I think Phineas is the

bride of Frankenstein. He's supposed to be the

doctor. With that hair? That's totally bright

of Frankenstein hair, man. It's red, but he's

got red hair. I mean, he can't help it. I just

assumed he was supposed to be the doctor. Maybe.

I don't know. So so he's actually Frankenstein,

not Frankenstein's monster. Yeah, it's a common

mistake. Yeah. Wait, wait, wait. One more. Go

ahead. First appearance of the giant baby head.

Oh Yeah, I'm sorry. That's not bigger than Susie

John. No, it's not bigger than Susie Johnson

But I think the giant baby head has made more

appearances than Susie Johnson. Yes it has It

even has lines in this one Yeah, but it's just

like a little coo crunch. Yeah, it does that

cooey noise. I'm sure that's just Dee getting

an extra check. I'm sorry, Dee Bradley Baker,

if you ever hear that, I'm really sorry, but

that's just what I assume you're doing the noises

for the giant floating baby. I don't think it's

an extra check, per se. I know, I know, it's

probably for scale. Yeah, no, they're allowed

to do up to three voices per show. After that,

they get an extra check. check yeah yeah so the

giant floating baby had to finish them forever

like um did you add that i thought yeah where

did that come from where what is that uh this

is the first appearance of sashes yep well they've

had the sashes well they've had them but they've

never used them right stuff right yeah Mean and

see that's the other like if you're gonna show

the other fireside girls Please start showing

Isabella in her fireside girls uniform when they're

with her. She's the leader Yeah, just Can't she

can't leave without the sash Yeah, but that's

right. Yeah, so they all whip out their sashes

and create a makeshift trampoline for Phineas

so he doesn't die Yeah, cuz he's like he's like

coming in hard Not gonna make it and lastly the

the Look, I love this the descent evaporator

inator killed the haunted house Which is which

we talked about this before it was the the fishtailing

of the Was it fishtailing or dovetailing of the

a side and B side stories fish fish tail? Okay.

This was an awesome fishtail This was like the

mermaid of fishtails. Yeah, this is an awesome

fishtail because of my hair Mom you gotta look

look at this evil haunted house. Look at this

mess, and it's just Baljeet. Oh hi It evaporates.

The sense evaporates, yeah. Thank you. And then

it's just Baljeet again. Oh, I'm sorry, I forgot

my satchel. The one thing I noticed in this is

when Candice was going... Okay, so two things.

When Phineas and Isabella are going down the

roller coaster of horrors, at the very end, ever

since this happened... And now thankfully, thanks

to the magic of digital editing, I have the sound

effect. I always wanted Ferb's evil cackle when

the song ends and he goes, whoa! Always loved

that. The second time through the haunted house

thing in the roller coaster, Candice ends up

being bounced and trounced and goes through the

whole thing. Right at the end of it. Oh, oh no

in the middle of it. She ends up in a room Where

it's Dracula he says good evening. It is evening,

isn't it? Last thing we need is Dracula turning

into a sparkly piece of does exactly Sparkly

it's awful when when I was watching this with

Chrissy She caught Candice's assent through the

haunted house and she said, you know No, it was

funny cuz she said, you know if Isabella Had

gone through the house the same way that Candice

had she wouldn't have hiccups anymore She got

the guy to tour which you know is doing her any

good Yeah Why wasn't Isabella running from room

to room being chased by stuff? I just thought

it was funny There was a a I don't know. This

isn't the first appearance of but it is the first

overuse of The triangles All the backgrounds

are you remember when we earlier episodes earlier

in the week in the first few days of summer here

We talked about using photos as background elements

And so now we've done kind of a complete 180

where instead of using, you know, photorealistic

backgrounds, now we're doing like abstract triangle

art as backgrounds. And it could be like a vague

tree shape with just random triangles in it.

Or it could be like a house that's vaguely house

shaped, except there are triangles that kind

of make little shingles at the top. But there's

all these vague abstract triangles in the background

like everywhere Well throughout the show if they

always do that because they're basically referencing

fitting in the fact that he's mr. Triangle head,

right? Well, I mean, yeah, he's triangle head

and and Ferb is mr. Rectangle head So there are

a lot of Ferb stuff coming. I mean, I don't know

I didn't see any rectangles, you know, but I

mean a lot of the backgrounds It's just like

A plain color a green or blue or something with

with a slightly different colored Triangle patches

patch of triangles. Let's say and I don't I I

know it's a style choice. It's not lazy art It's

a style choice. That's how they do it because

it progresses and Becomes a staple of the show

But this is the first time where I was like,

wow, you know, it's like half an hour of this,

and... I think, but I could be wrong. You can

correct me. I'm sure the millions and millions

of Phineas and Ferb fans listening to us will

correct me. I believe I heard Dan and Swampy

in interviews say that they wanted kids to learn

shapes. So, Phineas is triangle head, Ferb is

a rectangle, Candice is some weird... You know

What was a crew crayon and and that is that is

just such a cop -out All right Isabella is like

a circle I could have sworn I heard an interview

with Dan and Swampy where they said they wanted

subconsciously For children to that watch the

show to learn shapes Wow, that's why This is

a triangle head and so on and so forth. You're

going to go with that, huh? Yep, that's my story

and I'm sticking to it. I want to say at some

point they did one of those, you know, meet the

artists of Phineas and Ferb on the Disney Channel.

And one of them, I want to say it was Swampy.

He drew Dufant Smertz. And on one of them he

drew a Phineas. And yeah, that was kind of you

know after having seen that I'll kind of buy

that yeah, you know it's a triangle sure All

right any no no we don't moments I kind of felt

bad for Candice He like a lot you know not that

not just because you know she's on the Receiving

end of the haunted house, you know, but she's

also been targeted by Suzy Yeah, who is Really

mean, you know Just it's a terrible terrible

person and refuses to own up for it to her own

evilness That was one of the notes I took here

is Candice you got a little something. Oh, that's

a poodle Yeah, yeah on her butt and she's just

like and on her head What happened was, as the

scene goes through, Candice bends over, she takes

her helmet off. She bends over, the dog bites

her in the butt, she shakes it off. It ends up

starting to chew the helmet. So when she goes

to leave... when Jeremy comes out and picks up

Susie and she's like, you know, she's going through

her whole mental breakdown here and she's like,

oh, you, you don't see it. She's trying to destroy

whatever potential future we have and whatever

else. And she throws the helmet on the dogs on

the helmet. And she basically rides the bike

home with the dog on the helmet. She rides up

to, cause I actually grabbed, I grabbed this

after the dog got off the helmet, but she rides

up to the haunted house. And because of the haunted

house, the dog basically loosens its grip with

its teeth on her helmet and runs away because

of the haunted house scared the dog shitless.

Poodles are known to dislike haunted houses.

I guess so. The only thing I wrote down for a

negative for this was Buford being scared of

Susie. I guess every bully has a weak spot. Not

every bully has a dress in his closet though,

so I'm not gonna say not all of them do just

saying that Where's that rimshot app when you

really need it? Oh boy The only other negative

I really have and this actually goes into affecting

my my score is the fact that While it's cool

the doofenshmirtz and perry back -and -forth

are he like we said he essentially has no inator

he has no plans to go it's just he's doing uh...

uh... an evil friend a favor day and i'm like

wait seriously really this is how we're doing

like i thought every episode was supposed to

be him trying to take over the tristate area

uh... i mean arguably if he had an ocean fortress

that might help yeah that's true But I mean come

on a giant eye which the island almost looks

like Ferb's head Almost all right sure Almost

it has it. I mean hell do Finchmurch's building

looks more like Ferb's head. It does yeah, so

it's just one of those things where it's like

Vaguely do Finchmurch shaped I guess Yeah All

right, what would you rate? One good scare ought

to do it. This one was a lot of fun I'm gonna

go for five. I really like the double episodes

You know, especially when they have enough time

to really delve into both stories The story is

fishtailed nicely at the end. That's that's their

dovetail fishtail mermaid tailed It was something

with a tail I liked the tail That's what she

said every once in a while you get a little tail

and and that makes it all worthwhile five stars

No, I can think of his Jason Alexander and she

shallow how Anyway, he's Alexander He had he

suffered from an extended tailbone Okay Okay,

so for me so wrong It's... For me, I'm gonna

give it a four and a half out of five only because

of the fact that there's... There isn't an eighter,

but there's no plan to take over the Tri -State

area. Yeah, but I mean, that doesn't mean that

the Doofenshmirtz story wasn't fun. No, no, no.

I'm not saying... Four and a half, I mean, come

on. It's a good score. It's not like I'm giving

it a one. I'm just saying that four and a half

out of five, I took a half point off for the

fact that... He has no actual plan to take over

the Tri -State area. Yeah. Alright. Alright,

we're gonna take one quick break. We'll be back

with closing thoughts and all that good stuff

after this. This is a little bit awkward, but

have you seen my escape jet keys? What, you have?

Well, that's great. Where are they? You won't

tell me? Is this because you don't speak or are

you just being a jerk? Alright folks, that's

gonna do it for this episode of the Podcast Organization

Without Equal acronym. We are coming up on the

10th day of summer and there's no end in sight

with us here on Paoka. After watching this latest

two -parter... Are you wanting more two -parters

as we go along or do you prefer the? At this

point in watching the show again. Do you prefer

the individual to 11 minute? stories, you know,

like I said, I think they have more time to flesh

out the story and Have them weave together better.

So so I like the two -parters Yeah, I'm I'm right

there with you I do like some of the individual

cartoons, which is, I mean, obvious, you know,

so. But yeah, I mean, the two -parters are pretty

awesome. All right, thank you for joining us
