Are You My Mummy? and Flop Starz Review

About this Episode
There's a hundred and four days of summer vacation
And school comes along just to end it So the
annual problem for our generation Is finding
a good way to spend it Like maybe building a
rocket Or fighting a mummy Or climbing up the
Eiffel Tower Discovering something that doesn't
exist Or giving a monkey a shower Skirping tidal
waves Creating nanobots Or locating Frankenstein's
brain It's over here! Hello! And welcome to episode
four of Palka, a podcast organization without
a cool acronym. I am one of your hosts, TFJone
Mike, and joining me is Pecan and Kurt Michael.
Hello. Hey, how's it going? It's going. And it
is time once again to talk about some more Phineas
and Ferb cartoons. Today we have Are You My Mummy?
and Flop Stars. So I think we're going to jump
on the roller coaster and head to the Egyptian
movie theater after this. Do you know kids, this
theatre was built over 70 years ago in this neo
-Egyptian style. And apparently there used to
be a whole pharaoh's tomb displayed with a mummy
in his sarcophagus. I mean, you couldn't pick
a better place to watch a classic old mummy movie.
There's an inscription here, an incantation of
some sort. Owa Tagu Sayan. Dad, where do you
find a mummy? Head and deep in the bowels of
the pyramids. Oops, better put this on vibrate.
Dad, is it hard to get into a pyramid? Yes indeed.
Often you had to negotiate various booby traps
that were set centuries before. You ridiculous
mummy! You've just achieved one of your own booby
traps! Awesome booby trap! Ferb, we should get
our own mummy. He's wrapped in bandages and covered
in molded debris My undead mummy and me If a
bully ever tries to poke me in the eye I'll introduce
him to my decomposing guy and he'll flee All
the kids at school are gonna have a conniption
When they get a load of my funky Egyptian MC
My undead mommy and me, yeah Undead mommy and
me That would be awesome! Dad, can we... Come
on, Ferb We'll be back before he wakes up. First
up, Are You My Mummy? While watching a mummy
movie with their dad, Laurence, Phineas and Ferb
decide to go in search of a real mummy only to
find from a familiar mummy. Meanwhile, Dr. DuVinci
-Mertz attempts to create some beachfront property.
Okay, so... Hmm. Um... Hmm... Are You My Mummy?
It's a giant game of pinball. You know... It
turns into a giant... I mean, I get it, it's
a... It's like 2D pinball, though. It's like...
Yeah... It's kind of like a side -scroller. They
weren't thinking very fourth -dimensionally when
they made this one, apparently. Yeah, I guess
not. I like this episode. And this isn't because...
Well... I'm always more of more of a space adventure
kind of film watcher than treasure hunting okay
I've seen and I've seen the Indiana Jones movies
I like them Last Crusade is my favorite it's
the one I will always go back and watch but I
don't go back and watch them often whereas I've
seen the Star Wars films at least the first six
Multiple multiple times. Well, okay three through
six because let's face it one and two are just
You can skip one all together Yeah, pretty much
pod racing and medic laurens. You don't need
that. Yeah For the most part you could probably
skip Darth Maul too. Mm -hmm. That's a bit blasphemous.
But yeah, he's You know talk about one -hit wonders
He's supposed to be coming back in Star Wars
rebels, I think I think they're supposed to be
bringing him back alive or something Something
somewhere. I read something. I wouldn't doubt
it. He came back in Clone Wars. Clone Wars, okay.
Yeah, and he may or may not have been killed
By Palpatine, you know, but well I Guess we'll
find out. Yeah, I guess we will end up as an
Inquisitor or something No I think in this episode,
Doofenshmirtz's scheme, this scheme is a little
bit more stupid than the melting of the chocolate
from yesterday. I mean, come on. He's going to
raise the water level to give his property from
one mile from the shoreline to be beachfront.
Like, come on. How is that - in an attempt to
take over the Tri... He's always wanting to take
over the Tri -State area. Yeah. Well, technically,
isn't that Lex Luthor's plan from the first Superman
movie back in 1978? Yeah, he wants to create
his own... He wants to melt California off the
face of the Earth and... Yeah. Well, it triggered
the San Andreas Vault, sending California into
the bottom of the ocean. ocean rushes in and
all that all that desert property suddenly becomes
oceanfront property yeah it's uh lexville and
odysburg odysburg can't forget odysburg odysburg
written in permanent marker i'm sorry mr luthor
eisenberg you are no gene hacken All right, yeah
the yes -yes -we -do moments things we did like
Perry, okay Perry has a vehicle to get to the
sub and then the sub does I get the joke The
sub does it because the sewer is not enough water.
Yeah, you can't actually dive in the sewer. Yeah.
The buttons. Did you notice the buttons? Dive,
don't dive. In the sand. Yeah. I'm like, wait,
what? Don't dive. And when he's first getting
the mission, a pound of blood sausage. Oh, wait,
that's my grocery list. Wait, what? What? A pound
of blood sausage. Really? No, thank you, Major
Monoram. I noticed this, and I should have known
this before, they make the first reference to
something that happens way later in a two -parter
called Nerds of a Feather. Space Adventure 6
is a film that they reference here in the basement,
and actually the Space Adventure series comes
back in that whole two -parter with the convention
thing. I would not have made that reference.
Well, like I said, I watched these episodes twice,
so I caught it twice. What did you like about
this one? Well, you made the reference back to
Raiders of the Lost Ark. And yeah, the whole
gumball boulder chase, that made me giggle. I
like that. I like when she eats the gum. Yeah.
Candice gets really, really exactly. She gets
hit by the gumball boulder. It explodes and she's
like, Oh, what's this? It's gumballs. Yeah. It's
really, really old, stale, stale because it knocks
her into the, the storage closet or the supply
closet. I think. And that's the other thing I
noticed is sometimes in this episode, uh, stairway
is actually used two different Signs for the
stairway to the basement. It's two different
side. I'm not complaining about I'm just saying
I know is it but when she eats the bubblegum
she's in the in the the supply closet there and
she eats the bubblegum she steps in the mop bucket
and Then she gets all the toilet paper wrapped
around her It's funny she's like tart and feathered
Pretty much. Yeah she's she's buttered in toilet
paper but you know she's she's got her mouth
full of old stale gum yeah we got our very own
mummy look for we got our very own mummy oh my
god now i've actually had not not the mummy part
what i'm going to talk about here in a moment
when phineas and ferb are this is before she
before the gumball thing crashes When they're
riding the thing, and they end up getting caught,
and both their heads slam on the wall, I've actually
had that happen to me. That explains it so much.
No, no it doesn't. I was late for school one
day, and you know how sometimes you can take
the stairs... up two at a time or three at a
time. Well, I tried to skip a few. Next thing
I know, I jumped a little too far, hit my head
on the wall, and then ended up falling halfway
down. Yeah, it was a whole thing. Yeah, I was
pretty awkward when I was 13. Sure, okay. You
still have all your teeth. That's a wonder. Some
not all but some Wow Okay that went in unexpected
direction sure Anything else you liked about
this one I had the best song yet my undead mummy
and me That was awesome that was the first time
I was actually singing along with This is a great
one There was it you know in this in the intro
they have the giving the mummy a shower And it
looks like... Oh, it's giving the monkey a shower,
not mummy. Alright, what was the mummy? Find
the mummy's brain? It's find... Find Frankenstein's
brain. Alright, which is the line where they're
wrestling the mummy? Oh, I should know this.
Yeah, it's in the intro. Yeah, I know. They're
wrestling a mummy. Anyway, so... Flashback their
flashback here in the title sequence where they're
wrestling the mummy Mmm made me think of this
episode. I'm almost positive that that was like
a cutscene or something from this episode Yeah,
most of the stuff in the intro is cutscenes or
clips of from yeah from the actual episode Do
we see a mummy though? That's the thing So that
was my thought Well, that's kind of strange All
right, no, no, we don't moments I actually only
have two for this So come on now I know in my
lifetime I've known plenty of movie theater employees
Not all like that guy in there and the managers
are not all like that manager. I mean, that's
a huge Manager stereotypical Misconception, I
mean well because the the pimply -faced guy Manager
assistance. Yes, but it you know Even I've worked
for several movie theaters and not all managers
are like that guy Okay, I know it's part of the
plot and all but seriously how big is that movie
theater basement? yeah and what what was weird
is that the whole basement was kind of set up
like you know like a 2d platform or video game
and yeah we're if you if you understand my meaning
and as a gamer from way back when you know that
was gratifying but i don't think it fit the style
we'll see okay so there's a point In the chase
scenes, when Candice is running from the gumball
before it crashes into her, where it goes into
the elevator, and then she gets to the elevator,
and she goes into it, and she looks behind her,
and the ball's behind her. When she goes running
out, it stops for half a second, because the
gumball thing is still in the elevator. You can
see one, two, three, four, and then another big
button above the four. So the basement has four
total level. I'm sorry. This is the one legit.
thing I'm gonna poke at because there's no way
in hell a movie theater basement is going to
have four subterranean levels. I mean, this isn't
friggin' Jennifer Gardner in Alias. I mean, you
know, this isn't a government spy thing here.
This isn't Mission Impossible for crap's sake.
Anything you didn't like out of this one? No,
I really enjoyed this one. This was a lot of
fun. What would you rate this one? You know,
I'd give probably give it a three and a half
And I'm gonna give it a two and a half because
really just the logistics of that basement just
befuddled me I based on the faulty logistics
alone to give it two and a half Shocking They
all can't be fives. I guess not. I mean, you
know, they can't all be Marvel special I mean
there are a lot of things that I liked about
this. I like the chase I like how they basically
Ferris Bueller us and say hey Ferb look our first
booby trap You know our second booby trap and
I mean, you know, I like that kind of stuff I
think the other reason besides the logistics
of the movie theater in its basement that I give
it a two and a half is because Doofenshmirtz's
plot is by far the dumbest one he's had yet.
I'm sorry, it is. The beachfront property thing.
And the other thing, when he goes to tell Perry
the platypus the scheme, after he shoots him
with the inherent evil bubble thing. The bubble
of pure evil! He shoots him with the thing he
parries in the bubble. He's explaining his scheme
He takes his his shirt his lab coat and rips
them off himself to show his beach shorts and
his It was terrible I was like I think he's wearing
a thong So he pulls off his lab coat and his
shirt and his pants and shows this and is like,
so I can turn my property one mile from the beach
and the beach from the property. He pulls it
off like Scooby would pull off a mask from Mr.
Weatherby or something. Oh, I thought you were
going to say like a Chippendale dancer. And yes,
I specifically used Mr. Weatherby to make a Scooby
Archie crossover reference. But he pulls it off
like you'd pull off a mask. And then... He puts
it right back on, and I'm like, there's no friggin'
way. It needed to go back on. There's no way.
No, yeah, I agree with that. But I'm saying,
there's just no way, after you rip your clothes
off like that, there's no way you're gonna be
able to put them right back on and they look
fine. But that's really outside of the movie
theater logistics. The other reason why I give
it a two and a half is because Doofenshmirtz's
plot was by far the stupidest one yet. The funniest
thing with his plot is how Perry gets out. He
does a beaver call, and the beaver shaves off,
you know, makes a toothpick, pops him out. They
do this because platypuses and beavers have the
same tail, kind of the same thing. They do this,
like, beaver, platypus, handshake and tail flop
and whatever else. And then when Doof and Schmertz
comes back... And puts him in a... They both
end up in a bubble and the craziest and the coolest
thing about it was that Doofenshmirtz's nose
is apparently sharp enough to pop the evil bubble.
That was... Is my nose really that pointy? Yeah.
It is. Yes, yes it is. Alright. We're gonna go
become flop stars after this. Oh, that's when
it's fun. I know, it just makes me... It's uh...
Rescue bots reference, I guess. No, that's -
that's Flopsters. Flopsters, I know. Something
completely different. There's no rescue bots.
Get your Transformers out of my Phineas and Ferb.
That Popstar stuff might be funny first, but
then you'd be stuck in a dead -end job. Too bad
you can't just do it once and move on. Well,
what you're talking about is a one -hit wonder.
A one -hit wonder? What's that? Well, a musical
act goes to the top of the charts with a catchy
tune and meaningless lyrics. Then they throw
a big diva tantrum, lose their label, and they
fade to obscurity. Before you know it, their
song ends up as elevator music. Years later,
they have a reunion concert. And after that,
they never sing again. And no one remembers them.
Not that I would know anything about that. A
one -hit wonder. Ferb, I know what we're going
to do today. Stacey, what am I going to sing?
Hello, what are you going to wear? What do you
think? Too much. Too little. Too clean. Too dirty.
Too street. Too goth. Where'd you get that? In
my mom's closet. You like it? Nah, too retro.
Perfect! Nice, huh? Yeah, you should have tried
that on first. Let's go! Chica -chica -choo -wop!
Meaningless lyrics done? How's the catchy tune
coming along? Excellent! Who'll be done by lunch?
Alright folks, it's time to become flop stars.
Candice tries out for the next super American
pop teen idol star. But Phineas and Ferb take
another route to stardom. Meanwhile, Perry the
Platypus tries to stop the evil Dr. Doofenshmirtz
from taking over the Tri -State area with a giant
building -shaped robot. Run on geek cast radio.
I did a music spotlight basically highlighting
all my My musical tastes and we did like music
of the 60s and 70s music of the 80s and 90s We
did countdowns for each decade that kind of stuff
uh... and then we get into several uh... artists
spotlights on various things that i enjoyed and
then we talked about the phenomenon of one hit
wonders and as soon as i had that episode idea
i immediately went to flop stars to get the definition
of a one -hit wonder and i immediately grab the
face and for a party of for a visit for us uh...
where lindana is explaining what a one -hit wonder
this is one of my favorite episodes from season
one this one was just so much fun this was uh...
i i really like the introduction of lindana i
don't think that we don't know her first name
at this point i mean and linda yeah yeah we knew
okay as i say this is the first we heard of it
like lindana as first we heard of her stage name
but i think we've known that her name was linda
I think it was, well, what was the episode? Fast
and the Finneas, where Candice goes over to Mrs.
Garcia Shapiro's. I think Mrs. Garcia Shapiro
says Linda's name once or twice maybe. So we've
known Linda's name, we just haven't known the
pop team. Star that she once was Let's go to
the mall Did you ever watch how I met your mother
No, I still never watched that show. Okay. Well,
there was one of the one of the characters there
Her name I forget but But it was not even that
memorable. It was a great series. But what it
come down to is it turns out that she was a one
hit wonder 80s pop star and and they had this
horrible, horrible 80s style video, you know,
complete with the the Nintendo robot, you know,
whose arms came together and it was just a virtual
boy. Yeah, it was it was awful. And and her song
was Let's Go to the Mall. Yeah, she was Canadian
so they so they pronounce everything in Canadian
a that was a and a boot, you know Yeah, it was
funny it was really funny but that's it always
makes me giggle All right, so the yes, yes we
do moments we get Lindana's origin which is kind
of cool Candice's clothing montage is just funny.
Yeah, I want to animate a gif of just her clothing
montage It's the first time they use the clothing
montage, but they'll use it again once we eventually
get introduced to Carl V in the intern. Yeah
Let's see here, but you're gonna say the the
danger F Yeah, there is that too danger It was
in the beak part one too, yeah. I do not remember
VHS tapes being that sturdy. I'm sorry, Perry
the Platypus, I just don't think a VHS tape actual,
the actual tape will hold you. That might have
been a beta. We don't know. They do say tape,
they don't say which one, but I assume it's VHS
because betas were a little bit larger, I think.
Well, you know, the betamax were... made with
a high tensile steel so you can actually swing
from them oh jeez the amazing folding mattress
company alls i can think of is those old kraftmatic
bed ads it just senses you in there and snaps
up No, but seriously when I saw it because I
thought I thought it was just gonna be a run
because there's a running gag later when when
we meet the regurgitator and I think it's a later
season but Dufant Schmertz gets downgraded to
minor threat and he always complains about you
know how oh you don't even have a throw pillow
and so he Whatever, so it's one of those things
where when he goes down when he falls down here
He lands in a mess. Okay, so he's all right Nothing's
gonna all of a sudden the mattress folds over
and the robot leg the robot foot comes stopping
half muffled I love the music thing with this.
I love the fact that Phineas and Ferb created
a hit single and just you know, just right before
lunch. Bow Chicka Bow Wow. They've got all the
Kitchi Kitchi Goo and all that. Yeah. Well, it's
funny because when I hear Bow Chicka Bow Wow,
you know, it's like. Yeah. 70s porn theme, you
know, Bow Chicka Wow Wow. And they misappropriated
it. You gotta love Marty the Rabbit Boy and his
musical blender, though. First appearance of
Marty the Rabbit Boy in his musical blender.
He has a very particular shape about him. Yes.
And then at the very end he's like, Candice,
maybe this will help you out, and he actually
blends out. Get you get you go she goes. No,
sorry that doesn't know What'd you like about
this one? I like the spy glasses And the eyeglasses
the glasses with the fake nose. Oh Disguise and
it's like a new intern and he takes it off and
he was Perry the intern, you know It was funny
it's like yeah those actually work People can't
tell who you are when you're wearing those Let's
face it doofenshmirtz is not the smartest guy
in the shed. So I mean Like the adventures in
a second dimension. He's like, are you serious?
You're telling me you can't tell the difference
Getting ahead of ourselves. Yes, very much. And
I had one thing that I didn't like I will save
that until after you have said your your piece
No, I'm done I didn't like the the transforming
building Really? Yeah, you've seen big with Tom
Hanks Yes, and he's like it's a skyscraper that
turns into a robot. No one's gonna play with
that I'm like, this is like the worst transformer
ever this blows When I first saw it I thought
oh, it's it's turbo man. Where's Arnold and and
sin bad when you need them Jingle all the way
Did they have a building that turned into a robot?
No, but I just thought of the toy turbo now so
Did you notice the demolition reference in this
I? Don't think I did where The Demolition Man
or whatever. Yeah, it's the Demolition Man reference.
When Isabella said, oh, that's a nice painting.
How'd you get them to let you do that? None of
the building's scheduled for demolition. So it's
not like it matters. And that's a reference to
Demolition Man? Mm -hmm. Because with the building
is scheduled for demolition and they used several
buildings from Different cities in the movie
that were actually scheduled to be demolished
So they allowed the movie to demolish them because
they were gonna be destroyed anyway. Oh Yeah,
yeah, I get it. Sorry. Yeah, it's okay. Yeah,
okay Sylvester Stallone. Yes. Yes was Sylvester
Stallone Because it was a building here in Louisville
that they did that with. Oh, all right. Yeah
sure All right. What are you gonna rate flop
stars? You know, I'm gonna be generous here and
give this one a oh Man, I want to give it a five
but at the same time I Was not as impressed with
the let's give it a four and a half Wow weren't
you impressed with well, I'm trying to think
You know what what was so incredible about the
doofenshmirtz scheme and it wasn't all that great
it had a robot and The robot, you know the way
we talked earlier Maybe yesterday I should say
about how the the the a story and the B story
fishtail together And and and the the doofenshmirtz
Disaster always cleans up whatever the boys have
built And in this case, all it did was reach
into a building and grab their tape And I Not
even the fishtail worked this time. It was just
kind of not that great, but There are so many
things to like here. I mean you've got Lindana
You've you got the you know, the Marty the rabbit
boy, you know bow chick a wow Wow I mean, we're
talking about, like, with Mummy and the My Ended
Mummy and Me, uh, songs that stick in your head.
Oh, yeah. I mean, jeez, Bow Chicka Wa Wa is like,
oh, it's a nonsense song, but no, it's stuck
there forever. We'll never get it out. Oh, just
wait. There's gonna be one song that's gonna
be stuck in our heads forever after we do the
episode with it. Oh, don't tell me. Aglet. Aglet
No, you know what? I thought this might be the
same one where uh, we're Perry Perry goes away.
It's Perry come home. Oh Yeah, come on Perry.
That sucks in my head too. That will always be
there and Bouchic. Oh, well, I'm Larry. I ran
out of rhymes. All right Yeah Uh, the other cool
thing about this one is when Phineas and Ferb
have their, their, their meltdown, their, their
temper tantrum, they're basically exploiting,
you know, how the music business is basically
run and wherever else. And after they, after
they leave, before the giant robot comes in,
the guy says, Oh, we've got their tape. We can,
you know, we can squeeze 20 years of content
out of this. And I'm like, oh, if only that would
have really happened, because they almost squeeze
it for knees and firm. The show itself lasted
eight years. Yeah, they almost got 10 years of
content out of this one tape. Yeah, that's right.
We'll freeze their head. And no, no, no, no,
no. No Peter Cullen on ice jokes, please. Oh,
you know, that's what I was going for. Yeah.
We'll have their voices digitized for years to
come. Oh, the magic of digital editing. That's
a lost art. No, that's no, that's die hard. Die
cast construction is lost art. That's right.
Oh crap. I'm going to give Flop Stars a five.
I loved it. Yeah, I mean it wasn't okay. They
worked around doofus because there wasn't really
anything for doof and schmertz to clean up. I
mean. And that's what I find when they're not
actually in their backyard or at like, say, Little
Duffer's golf course or something like that,
where they're not in a location where they're
actually building something. With this one, they
were creating, you know, a hit song to go out
and go on tour. So they really only had like,
you know, posters up and that kind of stuff.
And the fact that the building got demolished
by somebody else other than Doof and Schmertz,
because Perry actually stops the building from
getting demolished because he throws the switch
and the foot for the robot then goes off somewhere
else. It wasn't really that bad that the A story
and the B story didn't intersect because they
found a way logically to still get rid of Phineas
and the Ferb tones. I suppose. I mean, at the
end he's like, all right, we're never singing
that song again. Which was a shame, you know.
The mall is now closed. It will reopen tomorrow
morning at 9 a .m. That's the Googleplex. Ha

another thing I didn't mention about Flop Stars
is I love how they end the episode with Linda
watching the very 80s -style 4 a .m. infomercial
about buying a collection of 80s CDs. You've
seen those old infomercials. Oh, they're really
old, yeah. The ones where the songs scroll up
and they highlight certain ones and it's basically
what it was Except it was like now you can get
Lindana's hit album in all these different languages.
Yeah, I just kind of thought that was hilarious
So we're four days into summer where we're you
know going along through season one of Phineas
and Ferb and Think they're I think by flop stars
they've kind of hit their stride and they're
kind of just ready to go at the pace and I think
that it's one of those things where And I said
this before where we may like the a story or
the B story or both or knee I don't think we're
gonna get to a point where we don't like neither
because there's at least something good in either
one and I think that Doofenshmirtz need if he
wants to take over the tri -state area he needs
to find a little bit better plots to be able
to do so I mean I get it that's the joke he's
never gonna be able to succeed but it just it's
just one of those things where some of the plots
that he comes up with have nothing to do with
