About this Episode

TFG1 and TV's Mr. Neal review three episodes of The Super Mario Bros. Super Show: "Mario of the Deep," "Flatbush Koopa," and "Raiders of the Lost Mushroom." The hosts discuss the lack of plot, poor animation quality, the bizarre inclusion of Nazi imagery in the Indiana Jones parody, and their overall fatigue with the series as they approach its conclusion.

welcome to the latest episode of pixels in the

animation. I am one of your host TF2 and Mike

and joining me as always is TV's Mr. Do. Oh my

god there's a light at the end of the tunnel

either that or my life is ending I don't know

this show might be killing me. Well it can't

be anything as bad as bad rap. This week's block

of episodes they work none of them are as bad

as bad rap but It was an endurance round, I can

say that. Yeah. I wonder if there was ever an

agent in the James Bond Secret Service 001. For

people not following along at home, I basically

just gave away a bunch of stuff that will come

at the end of the podcast. Alright, so we are

at episode 13. As Neil said, the end is in sight.

We have one more episode before... We have one

more episode of reviews after this, and then

episode 15 is the Super Mario Bros. Super Show

recap, where we begrudgingly, agonizingly go

back over the show in a wider scope. Yeah. I'm

so glad we're not doing commentaries on these

things because, holy crap, that's one of the

ways that I will have a podcast continue on,

like if I want to do it differently, like when

we did the, over at GCR we have a Power Rangers

podcast where we reviewed every single US season.

and Spada actually gave us Sentai clips to go

along with those and to revitalize it and celebrate

the 20th anniversary of the US version of Power

Rangers. We're going back and doing commentaries

from MMPR. I don't think we could ever do commentaries

on about Super Show. Just watching them now is

nearly about to. make Neil and I just kill ourselves.

Yeah, if there was a commentary, if you listen

closely, you would hear us tying the ropes and

then kicking the chairs out from underneath us.

Brooks was here and so was Red. Oh, wow. All

right, so let's get to today's episodes after

this. First up today is Mario of the Deep Okay,

and the live -action segment was two bums from

Brooklyn and Basically baseball manager Tommy

lasagna, which is obviously a parody of Tommy

lasorda played by Joe Bellin Arrives to sample

Mario's meatballs for his restaurant and hires

the Mario's to sell peanuts at the ballpark Um,

that was interesting. It would have been even

more interesting if they actually got Tommy lasorda

to do the thing but obviously Too busy too busy

signing a deal with Sega to have his own baseball

game on the Genesis Yeah Mario of the deep Mario's

group tries to save Aqualand Hey, where's Aquaman

when you really need him? from Koopa's rain The

plot is just You know what I'm generally not

a fan of Aquaman, but I do enjoy the Justice

League two -parter Enemy below where that version

of Aquaman in order to save his son has to cut

his own hand off I like that. I know that may

sound sadistic, but holy crap. What were they

trying to parody here? I don't know. I don't

know either I honestly have no idea. The plot

is just... I know we've said this for the last

12 episodes, but it's just not there. The only

thing, and we're probably just gonna skip right

down to Goombas, but the only thing that I really

have written down for Fire Flowers for good points

is, I really did like, because it's very hard

to do underwater. animation as far as I know

it is. You can correct me if I'm wrong, but I

thought the underwater animation was damn good

looking for what it is. I think they had a filter

back then that kind of adds a little bit of waviness

to the video and that's how they get that. The

only positive thing I can say is that, hey, Clawgrip

showed up. One of the rare Mario villains. Uh

-huh, yeah. The overall plot, it's like every

other plot of this show. The gang go to this

latest land in the shroom kingdom and smoke a

lot of weed and do a lot of drugs. Do some shrooms.

Yeah. Yeah. In more ways than one. No! Oh no!

Why don't we, uh, go ahead and get to the Goomba

stomping after this. This time, plumb bums, I'm

gonna flush you down the drainpipe of doom! All

right, stomping on the Goombas. I know it's a

cartoon and all, and there's supposed to be some

sort of suspension of disbelief, but how the

hell are Mario, Luigi, and the Princess breathing

underwater? for that long period of time oh they've

done this before where like it doesn't matter

if they're underwater they can just be there

for some reason and it kind of uh it kind of

runs into a a little problem with a with a later

episode of super mario 3 where mario is afraid

to swim but we'll burn that bridge when we get

to it yes i was so bored with this What were

you gonna say? Nothing, I had to cough. I was

just so bored with this. The entire thing took

place underwater. Like, they didn't... I don't

even remember them coming to the surface at the

end of the episode. They didn't. Yeah, that...

Yeah, this is so boring and you mentioned earlier

about the good point about a claw grip What the

hell and what game is the claw grip from from

Super Mario to? See what world is he in? I think

he might be the boss of world three Maybe oh,

yeah, see I probably wouldn't know him then because

usually after world one. I worked warped to world

four. Yeah Either world three or world five.

I don't remember but anyway king neptune so annoying

and there are way too many fish puns in this

episode like like an overabundance of fish puns

so bad just so bad and then later on normally

i don't i used to love when playing the original

super mario i love the underwater music and the

sound effects while you're swimming The swimming

sound effects in this just started to piss me

off by the time we got to the end of the episode.

I don't know. What didn't you like about this

one? The fact that there was virtually no plot.

Was the Little Mermaid out by this point? I should

have looked that up. Well, I've got the thing

here. Mario of the Deep, November 22, 1989. I

know Little Mermaid came out in 89. They wouldn't

really have had time to rip it off, so I'm gonna

give Deke a point this time and say they probably

didn't rip it off, but still it was reminding

me of Little Mermaid a little. So you're basically

saying that Disney ripped off the Deke? No, I'm

gonna say that it's just a coincidence and I'm

gonna let Deke off the hook this time. But next

time, Deke, next time... Anyway, um, let's see

the underwater voice effect was just getting

on my nerves cuz Yeah, it kind of has this verbal

effect that it makes everyone sound like like

merman And a really bad merman at that yeah Oh

Yes, it was this episode aired November 22nd

1989 We're made a week before November November

14 Not even ten days apart, I know right Not

even well eight. It's actually eight days apart.

But yeah The thing is there was a little mermaid

type character in this Yeah, and she wasn't a

redhead at all and she's winning she was kind

of like I Don't know her name must have been

Do sec ex machina because she was basically there

to The Mario's were like, oh no, how do we how

do we rescue? King Neptune and she was like,

hey I know and she just happened to have the

information they needed that rescue government

As far as I know that's that's what her role

in the cartoon was yeah pretty much and this

just this just goes to show you that there aren't

ladies and gentlemen I've said before in the

last 12 episodes of the show I'm looking at this

as an adult like I was an adult when this came

out and it's not even about animation quality,

it's about the fact that these stories don't

hold up at... They don't even date themselves,

really. They're just... Because, as you've said

before, it's basically, hey, let's take the Mario

characters and put them in this story, or put

them in that story, or put them... Like... If

they did a Mario cartoon nowadays, not necessarily

in this same style, but... if they used part

of the origin of, hey, we got sucked down a warp

pipe, or whatever... I would want it to be slightly

better and you know more more to the story than

just what what trope can we rip off now of course

now there are tons of trope casts around here

so you never know see you said you said something

about looking at it with adult eyes I saw this

with kid eyes and I knew this wasn't good I I

was pissed off when this cartoon came out because

You know the early 80s It wasn't a good time

for cartoons, but you know the overseas stuff

was actually pretty good the early episodes of

Transformers were awesome looking The early deep

cartoons are pretty good. You know inspector

gadget was amazing and then this came along and

I was like what? Happened I was so disappointed.

I mean, this is why this like kids of the late

eighties are kind of jaded and this is why we

all like started watching anime in the mid 90s

because we just couldn't take this anymore all

right we are gonna move on to the next episode

number 12 ,247 it was a great day in the mushroom

kingdom we've finally gotten rid of cooper and

his evil minions the mushroom people were free

and the princess was back in her castle It was

time for me and Luigi to go back home to Brooklyn.

Thanks for scaring off, Koopa. You Mario brothers

are super. I'm sure gonna miss you guys. Don't

cry, Princess. With this drainpipe open, we can

visit any time we want. Yeah. Life without Koopa

is gonna be perfect as pasta. Speaking of which,

Luigi, let's go home to Mama's cooking. Up next

is Flatbush Koopa. Since when do lizards have

bushes? Well, Flatbush is a district in Brooklyn,

yeah. Yeah, it's a New York reference, yep. Alright,

so Flatbush Koopa, the live -action segment was

so lame. It was entitled Opera. Basically, their

upstairs neighbor apparently singing opera through

the open pipes. The live -action segments are

really disappointing me at this point. Yeah,

they really really are This wasn't so much a

story as it was just a premise Yeah, fly push

Koopa like Mario Luigi finally returned to Brooklyn

only to learn that Koopa is taking over the city

Like this could have like if they if they had

actually thought about this either Brooklyn Bound

or Flatbush Koopa could have been the final episode

of this series one of those two could have been

because you in both of those episodes you have

the choice of them returning home and even in

this episode they return home Koopa took over

and then they like I look at this episode and

I'm thinking like okay if this is like if this

is gonna be at the very tail end of the series

the very last episode this would be absolutely

amazing because you have them going home in the

beginning and then they get home Koopa's taking

over trying to take over Brooklyn and make it

Koopaland and Koopa Island and all this stuff

they stop him they send him back to the Mushroom

Kingdom and they keep going on with the fight

now that's how i would have loved to have seen

this series and on that kind of an episode note

sadly didn't do that what so ever uh... i a written

i have nothing written down for fire flowers

in this all the puns are so bad i have mostly

negative points but uh... and one one note i

have here is that when they first show up in

brooklyn they come out of the sewer and you notice

the the background painting the street corner

on is the exact same street corner that is in

the opening sequence of the Super Mario 3 cartoon.

The sign on the building is a little different,

and some of the other background elements are

different, but otherwise it's supposed to be

the exact same shot. See, that makes me think,

and I know this didn't happen, but was Mario

3 in production? Don't think it was because it

didn't come out until what 90 or 91 it would

have been in production While this show was on

the air as it was like yeah next year Yeah so

Any other thoughts on the plot for this one um?

There really wasn't one I Know there were continuity

problems, but mostly due to the animation. We'll

get to that when we start negative Yeah, alright,

let's go ahead and get there then. Alright, let's

go ahead and stomp on the Goombas. Once again,

Mario's voice, Luigi's lips moving. Yeah, animation

error on that part. Really Koopa has a wand again

again. It goes to my point of asking you earlier

about Mario 3 because These were on the air See

that's see that's what I don't get like okay

I get you put a show in production the year before

and then before it goes on the air but How would

they know that they were gonna use want like

the game Mario 3 didn't come out until what 90?

Yeah, but like I said, first of all, it came

out in Japan in 1988 and they had to know that

that game already existed because they were talking

about making a cartoon. But other than that,

it could just be a coincidence. I mean, the instruction

manual does say that Koopa turned the mushroom

people into bricks and a little piece of instruction

booklet lore that I would like to forget because

it's stupid but anyway yeah it is in there so

the easiest way to do that is to have them do

it with a magic wand so it kind of it can be

passed off as a coincidence I know we've seen

the ones I was just speaking overall about this

series versus Mario 3 because you have we've

seen the ones before this episode it was wasn't

like that this was the only episode that we've

seen a wand in that's true Seriously, Koopa,

what the hell kind of plan is turning people

into bricks? Like I said, it's a stupid piece

of lore from the instruction book, but it doesn't

really make sense when it's actually applied

to a story. And it really pissed me off that

when they were actually using the damn warp zone

pipe, there's no warp zone effects. There's no

warp zone sound effect whatsoever when they jump

down and at the end, and they come out of it.

No sound effect whatsoever. What didn't you like

about this one? Well, it wasn't just the fact

that the the wrong character was talking I mean

this entire episode it isn't the worst episode.

It's the worst animated I mean their characters

were off model throughout the entire cartoon

Mario is a little shorter than he normally is

and Some of the just the way they were animated

was so like cookie cutter and simple I mean this

looks like someone's student film This episode

is appalling, even for the low standards set

by this show already. Wrong characters talking,

continuity problems caused by bad animation.

I mean, there are times when Koopa's on the ground

and suddenly he's on the roller coaster track.

He gets thrown through the circus tent and then

suddenly he's on top of the circus tent. It's

like, what is going on in this cartoon? People

are popping in and out of scenes. The cops are

turned into bricks and then suddenly one's not

a brick anymore. This is just horrible animation.

Yes, yes it is very much so. Like I said before

I did enjoy it for the fact of hey, we're gonna

go back to Brooklyn and of course as you said

we will see this again when we get to Mario 3

where they I Know for a fact there's an episode

where cootie pie Koopa or Wendy Oh Koopa, whatever

the fuck you want to call her She does try to

take over the world At one point when we get

to that cartoon, I'll have to explain the They

have kind of a silly origin. I'm sure they do,

just as they were. But I would rather have, and

I'll say this again once we get to Mario 3, I

would rather have, as far as a story standpoint

goes, I would rather have a Koopa Kid be the

boss of a level than a Birdo. Yeah. You know?

I mean... Alberto and then you jump in the eagles

mouth and it takes you to the casino and you

lose a lot of money. Alright, let's move on to

the final episode of the day. We were searching

for a legendary statue with magical powers the

lost mushroom only trouble was Koopa was looking

for it, too They say the last mushroom will grant

the wishes of whoever possesses it We've got

to find it before the evil Koopa. All right,

finally up today is Indiana Mario and the Raiders

of the Lost Mushroom Yeah Ladies and gentlemen

Tv's Mr. Neal and his exasperated sighs of...

I don't know what. Watching this episode feels

like getting raided by a lost mushroom. The live

action segment was Cirno DiMario. Yeah, Cirno

DiMario. Okay, this is based on the play... which

was adapted into an 80s film starring Steve Martin,

which was called Roxanne. Yeah. Yes. Supposedly

now I'm going to have to, I guess I'm going to

have to crack up my DVD set again. Supposedly

Vanna White was the guest star. I was going to

ask, because I was watching this, I'm like, is

this really Vanna White? It is. the thing for

me is i don't know i don't know if i looked away

at the wrong moment i never saw her and i watched

the i watched the whole thing from the beginning

to end did you blacked out no they don't think

i did possibly but um but i mean you think about

it vanna white one wrestler we'll get to later

which was absolutely awesome um sergeant slaughter

uh Magic Johnson all these other people that

were you know super huge At the time that this

cartoon was was out and everything else in the

van has been popular for years. Thanks to Wheel

of Fortune And they even had remember I said

a number of episodes ago She was there was an

animated version of her in the cartoon. Yeah

So, I mean it only I don't think that they would

have just made fun of her in the cartoon and

not had her on as a guest. I don't know. I think

this was someone on the set or someone in the

production was friends with her. I can't imagine

why she would appear on here. It's so random.

Well, it's a little bit more random that Magic

Johnson ends up in a magic mirror. I'm sure anything.

So it's like goes up on the Super Mario Super

Show for no reason. Yes Mario and company team

up with Indiana Joe to try and recover the statue

known as the lost mushroom Obviously the episode

is based on the Raiders of the last the lursed

what the hell's the worst Raiders of the Lost

Ark? It's a Marion Mario No Marion Mario is my

some good points to this so I guess we can try

to find some fire flowers any overall thoughts

in the plot um Not really just that it was kind

of weird and random that that Indiana Joe did

not have a face Yeah, that must be like an in

joke, I mean that's something that animators

do they find something funny that's like oh this

is isn't this funny let's put it in the cartoon

and like nobody in the audience understands yeah

i'll get to that when we get to the goombas so

let's uh go grab those fire flowers calamari

we've landed in a pond of quicksand boy did you

ever have one of those days The bravest, baddest

treasure hunter in jungle land, Indiana Joe!

Treasure hunter! Can you help us find Los Mushrooms?

Piece of cake, Jake! So for some fire flowers,

a Mario balloon with a giant M on it. I thought

that was hilarious. Hey, let's announce ourselves

to the world! Hey Koopa, here's a target for

you to shoot at. That was hilarious. I always

enjoyed the albatross, so yay albatross! And

Koopa swears again, fan Koopingtastic. Yeah,

I think they're doing that on purpose. Well,

yeah. I mean, because cartoons didn't crack the

censors until 1991 with Tiny Toons. Anything

you liked about this one? Not really a whole

lot. I didn't... Let's see... Well, Fry Guy shows

up. Let's see, other than that... Was that Fry

Guy or was that a different villain? That was

Fry Guy. Let's see... The one that was flying

around spitting fire at them? Yeah. This isn't

really a bad or good point. I'm just going to

point out that the lost mushroom is a little

gold statue of a... little naked buddha character

with a mushroom head and at certain angles it

kind of looks rather phallic and then on the

front of it, it appears to have an Audi belly

button but sometimes it doesn't look like an

Audi, it sometimes looks like something else.

Not really a good or bad point, just an observation

I made about the... So it's kind of like the

castle that's a dick. Yeah. Another Little Mermaid

reference two in the same show All right, let's

get to the goombas Looks like Indiana Joe is

gonna lead those sewer swimming saps to the lost

mushroom That guy knows the location of every

hidden treasure in jungle land and every shortcut

to them for the goombas stomping Indiana Joe

really? They couldn't have said Indiana Jones

Seriously like is that name okay outside of the

movie titles is the name actually copyrighted?

I'm Pretty sure it's trademarks Lucas probably

You mentioned earlier that it's some sort of

in joke that Joe doesn't have a face and whole

time I was thinking hey Where's Madonna's blank

they could get together and have Tracy didn't

come out till a year later. Oh Yeah, oh Great

the Coupa armbands are shitty half -drawn Nazi

symbols. Yeah, the Coupas are Nazis in this Which

is appropriate because it's based on Indiana

Jones, but yeah, it is but I get trying to be

accurate, but that was just a little too weird.

Like, that was too weird. Like, I could see this

episode happening if it wasn't Koopa. If Mouser

took it over from him. Yeah, Mouser was good

for the Nazi stereotype. Yeah, I could see that,

but... What about you? What didn't you want,

this one? Bad animation. Oh, the story couldn't

decide if the cobrats shoot bullets, eggs, or

fire. By the way, they are supposed to be shooting

bullets, but it was like all over the place.

Let's see. Yeah, that's pretty much it. Indiana

Joe. Yeah, I didn't get why his face was blank.

I mean Yeah, I'm just at a loss to explain that

Yeah, I I'm gonna lost to and I you know, I'm

I find myself really offended that they turned

Koopa and his villains into Nazis. This episode,

you know, just watching it made it feel like

my face was melting. I knew I should have kept

my eyes shut and not look at it. Yeah... I just...

I don't know. So we're gonna take a quick break.

We're gonna come back with final ratings and

Fantastic. Allons -y! And we're back, and before

we close out, we'll be ranking each episode on

a 0 to 5 stars slash Starman scale. For Mario

of the Deep, what do you give it? I'll give it

a 1. It wasn't good, but... See, we unanimously

gave Bad Rap a 0, so it's like... I have trouble

putting anything else at 0 now. really because

i can't like really like bring i can't like really

endorse the fact that anything could be as low

as that so i have to give it like a one just

to set it apart yeah well we did actually give

bad rap special grades of triple zero and zero

and infinity so i mean for me i was just so bored

with mario of the deep and like i said in in

the in the discussion part the entire episode

is underwater i needed a little bit of a change

of scenery but overall between that and uh...

king neptune uh... i was losing your audio there

for a second or yeah uh... between that and king

neptune uh... being so annoying uh... is so many

fish funds i gotta give this is your own it's

just uh... flatbush koopa you know i'm gonna

go back what i just said i'm gonna give this

is your crap so animated so badly it is yeah

uh wait are you talking about flatbush or mario

flatbush okay yeah yeah flatbush i like the the

plot premise um of them going back to brooklyn

and having to save it from i like that but the

animation was just so bad zero What about Raiders

of the Lost Mushroom? I guess I'll give it a

1. It wasn't completely terrible, but it was

still pretty bad. If Indiana Joe had actually

had a face, this would have been a 2 for me,

but it gets a 1 for me as well. So that's gonna

do it for us. What's going on over at No Super

Skirts? No Super Pants? Yes. Well, I don't know

yet, because we're recording this several weeks

in advance. So I don't know what page I'm on.

But should I explain that? It was kind of a reaction

to the new 52, how they were trying to put pants

on all the old superhero women. And they went

back on that, so Ben sold me the URL. So now

I just use it for my comic. Yeah. Yeah. All right,
