About this Episode

TFJ, Mike, and TV's Mr. Neil review "Little Red Riding Princess," "The Provolone Ranger," and "Escape from Koopatraz." The hosts discuss the series' tendency to adapt classic stories, the reliance on Western tropes, and why "Escape from Koopatraz" stands out as the strongest entry of the group.

paisanos, it's the Super Mario Brothers Super

Show! Welcome to the latest episode of Pixels

and the Animation. I am one of your hosts, TFJ

and Mike, and joining me is TV's Mr. Neil. Swing

your arms from side to side. No, thank you. No,

no, no, no, no. Yes, we are back for the twelfth

week in a row. We are three episodes away from

being done with Super Show. You know that light

at the end of a very dark tunnel? We're almost

there. The funny thing is the episodes for today

aren't as bad as they were for last week. Yeah,

not as bad being the key phrase here. Yes, not

as bad. But yeah, no, I... I still wish that

they would do stuff... and i know they're not

going to do it obviously now but i still wish

that they would have done stuff more in line

with the games because and we've said this the

entire podcast run at least this part of the

show reviewing this this series all this they

did was take the mario brothers and the mario

characters and throw them into classic tales

well i understand it's like the first two mario

games they're Really wasn't that much to work

with I mean Mario 3 at least had some elements

that they could fool around with the koopa kids

and the Magic wands and everything with these

two. It was just pretty much straightforward

platforming So you had the villains you had the

game mechanics and you got Mario Brothers and

that was pretty much it so It's really sad because

because the later games like some of the Mario

RPGs and even Mario Galaxy are much more They're

much more ripe with stuff that could be exploited

for a cartoon show, whereas Mario 1 and Mario

2 just didn't really have anything. I think you

said, I don't know, a few weeks ago, imagine

if they actually adapted Mario Bros. Mario vs.

Donkey Kong. God. I don't know whether that was.

Yeah. That would be interesting. Alright, we're

gonna get into the episodes today after this.

First we better get inside by a fire before we

turn into pasta sickles Alright, so first up

is Little Red Riding Princess So hoodwinked before

the hood got winked Nice. It is kind of like

hoodwinked Yeah, all you needed was the wolf

wearing the Fletch Jersey and that it would have

been that Like the wolf and had winked I don't

care what the wolf and twitchy are the two best

characters in those movies To it she's awesome.

Yes twitchy reminds me of Ben so much When he's

on coffee when twitch is on coffee, that's been

All right, little red riding princess, let's

see here we got The live -action segment was

no way to treat a Queenie. I don't remember.

This episode, it was kind of forgettable until

the end. The plot was that the Queen of England

stopped by the Mario Brothers' basement and why

she would be there gets solved at the very end.

It turns out she's an escape. a mental patient

and this guy with a white coat and a net comes

to pick her up at the end. And I was like, yes,

that was the best way to end this. That was actually

funny. And that's right. I remember that now.

All right. So Princess, Little Red Riding Princess.

Wow, even Wikipedia says peach is delivering

a basket of cake soup and apple cider to grandma

toadstool But she is pursued by both Koopa and

the big bad wolf. The episode obviously is based

on the Red Riding Hood This was an interesting,

you know what this reminds me of again We love

referencing Looney Tunes on this show Yep Tweety

and Sylvester Yeah, and and and the wolf yeah,

and I've loved that wolf too because it it was

the forgetful wolf He's like what's that kid's

name again? Yeah, yeah The other one I love is

the wolf and bugs bunny One little red riding

hood is this annoying yes you know what I'm talking

about grandma hello grandma I have some stuff

I you know she had that really like that couldn't

I know Mel had you know creative not creative

but vocal control over getting top billing I'm

sorry any of the female voices in Looney Tunes

shorts could not have been Mel No, they are either

June for a or possibly someone else, but I'm

Again, I don't dislike this one I'm gonna have

some negative stuff to say about it, but it still

didn't take away from my enjoyment of watching

this It's not gonna be a five. I'll tell you

that right now But it's not gonna be a one or

a zero either at the same time. I would have

rather watched the Looney Tunes stuff There was

a weird subplot in this. It wasn't just Red Riding

Hood. It was that Koopa had stolen all the wood

to a nearby mushroom village. Yeah, where grandma

was staying and it was up to the Mari brothers

to get the wood back and in the process. The

grandmother, no she doesn't get captured. She

gets sent away. She tricked by Koopa to to leave

so that he could he could take the role of the

wolf and dead And then of course the wolf shows

up and that's where the reference to Looney Tunes

is You have two villains instead of one and they're

both competing to be grandma Mm -hmm Yep I thought

this was an interesting take because of that

that that double villain thing Other than that,

I don't have anything for Fire Flowers. I barely

have anything for Goombas. Honestly, we can almost

get it out of the way now. The only thing I really

wrote down for Goombas was Plumbersnake. Really?

Really, Mario? Come on. What didn't you like

about this one? There wasn't really a lot to

dislike. It's just kind of like a really average

episode. Was gonna say one of the things I do

like was the was the dual villain thing I like

the the two villains who don't like each other.

It's kind of like the jungle book with with Shere

Khan and the snake Yeah, yeah The the wolf, you

know you he helped the Mari brothers out, but

only because Koopa was was muscling in on his

racket Yeah who was the i have to find out who

was the voice of the wolf and i i don't recognize

what i don't think it was captain lou i don't

think so i don't know that was interesting if

anyone out there can tell us who was the voice

of the wolf and uh... uh... little red riding

princess email feedback at geocastradio dot com

we are going to move on to the next cheesy episode

after this we were on our way to the wild western

frontier of the mushroom kingdom because the

folks of mush ridge had all their gold snatched

by that nasty outlaw billy the cooper would you

like some cheese with those crackers the next

episode the provolone ranger oh boy i'd say leave

that provolone Boy The Provolone Ranger the live

-action segment was goodbye mr. Fish At least

they weren't in drag I guess The woman in this

episode what else has she been in I recognize

her? mainly for her voice She's been in a lot

of stuff, and I'm pretty sure she's gone now

Probably, most likely. So Provolone Ranger, when

Koopa kidnaps Luigi, Princess Toadstool and Toad's...

Okay, let me try that again. When Koopa kidnaps

Luigi, Princess Toadstool and Toad in Sudden

Death Valley... Like, that joke wasn't just beat

over our heads. Mario becomes the Provolone Ranger

in order to save them. Episode is obviously based

on the Lone Ranger Another fucking Western episode

Someone on the staff really liked Westerns Yeah,

pretty much Plumber Savvy oh my god yeah i was

trying to remember what the this was a very dense

with puns episode i was trying to remember what

what he kept calling mario and yeah oh that was

bad well plumber sabi is like tanto yeah and

that was the whole the pronto was Oh provolone

law it could have been worse. He could have had

a dead bird on his head And again, I'm gonna

have to go back and use a Bill Cosby himself

clip Once you get the information, what does

information information say Tonto? No go to town.

That's what information says Oh, God. Um, this

one, again, we're not gonna even break this up.

I mean, it's just... I wonder if the Armie Hammer

movie is better than this. Oh, my God. Armie

Hammer, Johnny Depp, the latest Lone Ranger.

Yeah, I don't know. I... I'm really getting tired

of this show. I'm really getting tired of all

of this. Oh god, I can't wait until Ender comes

on and injects some new life into this podcast

once we get to Legend of Zelda because wow, is

this bad. Like I said, the Zelda cartoon isn't

a great cartoon, but it's better than this. Yes,

yes it is We are gonna move on did you anything

else you want to say? Let's see, you know the

one negative thing about this episode other than

the What I what I consider a parallel to Karate

Koopa with Pronto other than that the the one

thing I had to say is that I am so sick of Western

episodes in this cartoon I mean, what's next

blazing Koopas? Stop it with the goddamn Westerns.

I hate these episodes And on that note we're

gonna swim across the bay to see if we can break

into Koopa trash after this Number 1051 we were

off the creek without a plunger King Koopa had

captured us and put us on trial for our lives

Finally up today we have Escape from Koopatraz

and the live -action segment was French. Luigi

is trying to learn French because he thinks it's

going to impress the ladies Like Luigi's been

watching too many popular pew cartoons Although

that didn't really work for popular pew did it

Know and in what in one case in the most famous

case It actually backfired on him in the end

because he fell into the blue paint. Yeah, I

remember that But seriously Pepe is awesome You

know... Jetador, we die together! Oh god... Who's

this? What's this? Oh pardon, mademoiselle, and

she's... And that had to be an inside joke when

the cat falls in the water. I hope I don't have

to spell it out for the audience. Because that

was one wet pussy. Okay, um... Escape from Koopatraz.

Posing as a judge, Koopa sentences Mario and

company to the prison of Koopatraz, where he

is also the warden. Toad also finds his long

-lost grandfather. Episode is based also from

the escape... from Alcatraz. It's interesting.

I love how Koopa just glosses over everything

in it. He's basically, like if there was a real

judge in that or a real jury in there, he basically

admits to everything he's done to set them up.

Yeah, I like the first part of the episode where

they're basically just railroading the Mario

Brothers. It's like, why do you even have a court

though? You know I gotta say that the King Koopa

is like the bright spot in this cartoon because

What's his name Harvey Atkin? Is that his name?

Yeah, he does such a good job at this voice.

It's just that The material that he has to work

with is bad, but he does make the best of it.

He's funny in this Yeah, it's it's just absolutely

awesome and I love how they There are certain

things with Super Show That I don't like how

they incorporated Stuff, but how they incorporated

Alcatraz into this universe was really really

cool to me I thought that was great how they

did that And I really really did enjoy this episode

I thought it was damn damn good. There's anything

you didn't like about it Not really. I mean,

it was... All I gotta say is I was having a little

bit of deja vu because I could swear there was

another episode where I was comparing it to a

tech -savory cartoon where the guy in prison

is escaping and he comes up in the warden's office.

And that happens in this cartoon. Yeah. So I'm

like, huh, I've seen this before. But no, I don't

really have anything really negative other than

the usual complaints about animation and stuff

like that, but that didn't really harm this cartoon

too much. No, not really, not at all. All right,

we're gonna head to a quick break. You're gonna

hear some other audio clips and ads and other

interesting stuff from GCRN, some stuff from

Animation Aficionados and more. We'll come back

to rank these episodes and close the show after

this. It was so much fun being your crooked judge.

I decided to become your cruel warden. Mouser!

What are we reading a little red writing princess?

Hmm Let's see I'll be nice and give it a three

was a bit better than most Super show episodes.

So The dynamic between Koopa and the wolf was

fairly amusing. So I'll go with Yeah, I'm gonna

give it a three as well. I really enjoyed it.

It wasn't like oh my god. I love this It's so

great, but I Really really didn't enjoy it. So

it gets a three from me as well the provolone

ranger Neil Neil Neil Asabi. What do you give

the provolone ranger blazing Koopas? I'm gonna

give it one I'm gonna give it a two I liked Mario's

design as far as when he's in the costume. I

thought that was cool. But the rest of it, no.

Not so much. Let's see here. Escape from Koopatraz.

Where do you give that one? I'll also give this

one a 3. It was definitely a step up from a lot

of other episodes. Wasn't too much bad with it.

It wasn't as... amusing as certain other episodes,

so it's kind of right there in the middle for

me. I'm gonna give it a four. It's not one of

my favorites, but it was damn good and I really

enjoyed watching it. I really enjoyed every moment

of it and as I said earlier, I loved how they

incorporated the whole Alcatraz kind of history

thing with it. I thought that was pretty cool.

Alright, so what do you got going on over at

your Super Skirt website? No super pants. Um,
