About this Episode

Neil and Mike dive into three more episodes of The Super Mario Bros. Super Show: "Mighty McMario and the Pot of Gold," "Mario Meets Koopzilla," and "Koopa Claus." The hosts discuss the show's uninspired homages, problematic animation quality, and frustration with the repetitive nature of the Mario character's hunger and the series' overall tone. They also break down the live-action segments featuring Rob Stone and Brian Bonsall, offering their final ratings for each animated short.

Hey, Paisanos! It's the Super Mario Bros. Super

Show! Welcome to the latest episode of pixels

in the animation I am one of your Steve John

Mike and joining me in this episode of course

as always is TV's mr. Do I'm sorry our podcast

is in another castle Sucks to be us yeah Yeah

after this episode we are It's so weird because

we've said before in the last six weeks that

Mario Super Show would take 15 podcast episodes

so there is like really no halfway point like

if it was 16 I could say hey this is episode

7 and we're nine episodes away from being done

or it just I don't know I honestly don't and

by this point in the podcast lifespan and this

point in our watching of these cartoons I'm surprised

I survived watching these again. Like, I keep

saying it over the last three or four weeks.

I don't know what the fuck my kid brain was thinking

watching these, because oh my god. Like, I get

it. I really do understand going back and looking

at something in the time that it was made. But

looking at it as an adult... I... I don't know.

It's pretty hard. Yeah. Yeah, it really really

is you got any thoughts before we start today.

I don't think so no All right, let's get started

with the first episode which Yeah, it has no

charms in it sadly and stolen the little people's

pot of gold coins and all their good luck with

it these days if it weren't for bad luck i wouldn't

have any luck at all the pocket gold coins may

shamrock the luckiest of lands but now we have

the curse of of koopa first up today is mighty

mcmario and the pot of gold and the live action

was heartthrob uh live action is Again like heartthrob.

What was heartthrob was it dumb? Oh You know

what? I recognized the guy and I remember him

but I Don't know what from apparently he was

some kind of teen music star at one point and

so I don't know I Clearly well below my radar

even at that time Yeah Was it Rob Stone, I think?

Yeah, I think that's his name. Yeah, the funny

thing is is It says here unless it's the Unless

it's a different one the one the one wiki article

that always pops up is Rob Stone is a sports

commentator for Fox Soccer I don't think that's

the same guy. Let me see... Chief Executive of

the Hertz Corporation, no sports commentator,

actor, here we go. American actor, director from

Dallas, Texas, best known for playing team Kevin

Owens on the... Oh, he's Kevin from Mr. Belvedere.

Oh, that's right. He later became writer and

director of documentary films and also performed

as part of a band. Okay. Produced by the company.

Yeah, okay, yeah, yeah. So, hmm, that's... But

it made it sound like... See, that's the thing.

Like, in the live -action segment, Mario and

Luigi is like... Are you the kid? Are you the

guy? Are you the yeah? Yeah, and I'm thinking

who is this? Like are we as the audience supposed

to really recognize because I didn't recognize

him. Yeah Well, I recognized him but I didn't

know he was like a music star It's kind of like

the guy from breaking to they were like really

excited about him and I'm like who the hell is

this? Yeah And then of course, Mighty McMario

in the pot of gold has no lucky charms whatsoever.

Um, Mario and company must end a leprechaun's

curse of bad luck by retrieving his pot of gold

coins that was stolen by Koopa. The featured

song is, oh my god. How dare they use, do you

believe in magic from the love and spoonful,

oh my god. How dare they ruin a classic by putting

it in this series. I'm sorry. Oh My god, this

is so bad Yeah, the whole time I was waiting

for magic marshmallows honestly the whole time

I was waiting for he does kind of looks like

lucky I know I was I was waiting for hard stars

and clovers, you know red balloons and blue moons

and purple or I was honestly waiting for something

I Don't know the plot here It's generic at best

I'd say It's nothing that you know made me jump

for joy oh my god, they're doing this oh my god,

they're putting them in this I Don't know any

thoughts on the plot um not really but I I did

kind of about halfway through the episode i was

like wait a minute the guy's name is murphy he's

unlucky murphy's law yeah that's not cool at

all oh boy all right let's get to the fire flowers

if there are any after this So for fire flowers,

I have two food related entries here. Hey, where's

my cereal? And then I just thought of this now

looking at the title of this episode Mighty McMario,

where's my Big Mac? Damn it. Oh Big Mac large

fries and a chocolate shake. That's that's that's

lunch right there God I may actually have to

go out after we record this and go get that holy

crap The castle blew up like a rocket oh Yeah

That was so funny, that's pretty much all I got

the rest of it is just It's just there it really

is did you anything you liked about this one?

I got nothing Wow, this might be the shortest

fire flowers segment we've done so far in this

show Let's stomp on some goombas I remember I

think it was was it this episode or last week's

episode I said there are times where If I go

straight to the Goombas section and write something

bad down, you know that this episode is bad.

Right off the bat. Right off the bat, the animation

of Mario walking is freaking sideways. Yeah.

It's so bad. Like, he looks like he's... I hate

to compare it to this, but I have to. He looks

like he's Daffy Duck dancing onto the stage trying

to ruin Bugs Bunny's show in that one Looney

Tunes short where Daffy... Always wants to upstage

him the one where they're doing their their act

together. Yeah That's what it looks like to me

the the the the skipping animation It's just

so bad, but everybody else is walking is like

it's a it's a walking scene left to right on

the screen Everyone else is walking fine except

for Mario because the animation is so horrid

on him. Oh my god The leprechaun and the whole,

oh, if I don't have me pot of gold with me, I'm

not lucky at all. He went into the friggin' prison.

He was standing right fucking next to it when

Mario picked it back up. How is he still unlucky?

Yeah, I was thinking that too. I'm like, the

pot of gold's right there, so his bad luck freak

ends right now, right? Right? And then it doesn't.

I don't understand this. I don't get that at

all. Don't know what didn't you like about this

one? Just the fact that I could see the payoff

coming from like a mile away Yeah, I'm like,

oh I get it. He's unlucky to the people around

him. So all he has to do is hang around with

Koopa and Then that's gonna be payoff and sure

enough. That's exactly what happened Yeah, pretty

much and I have to say it again another episode

Mario is eating at the end yeah no not at all

so let's um let's move on to the next episode

plumber's log 2238 the oriental city of sayonara

our valiant group had come in search of a secret

weapon that could help us fight king koopa it

was called super sushi what's so super about

this super sushi Whoever eats it doubles their

size and strength! Besides that, it makes great

spaghetti sauce! Faster! Faster! Up next is Mario

meets Koopzilla. No. Please no. No, no, no, no,

no. Hey look! It's Godzilla! It's a reasonable

facsimile of Godzilla because we can't use that

for copyright purposes I honestly can't remember

where that what movie that's from but there's

a movie out there somewhere where two Japanese

looking men say hey look he's Godzilla and the

other one says the exact same thing that I just

said I love that but anyway Yeah, Mario meets

Koopzilla and fortune teller was the live -action

segment Mario and Luigi anxious to find out what

prize they won in a sweepstakes consult a fortune

-teller played by Kay Ballard for help The prizes

are you serious second prize is a night with

Madonna Grand prizes, I don't even remember with

the grid like first pro. No first prize was a

night with Madonna Or something and the grand

prize was I don't know something's really really

stupid Wasn't one of them like breakfast with

Scott Baio or something? Yeah, something like

that Talk about putting Charles in charge It's

better than him being 45 and pregnant And it's

kind of sad that I know two of Scott Baio's television

achievements. So for the animation, Mario meets

Koopzillo. After eating super sushi, Koopa has

grown enormous and is terrorizing the city of

Sayonara. Episode, of course, is based on Godzilla.

Featured song is the Jolly Green Giant by the

Kingsmen. Oh my god. They didn't they didn't

even try to go for blue oyster cult No Guess

not. Oh Wow. Oh my god the plot in this Remember,

I think it was last week or might have been episode

5 where I said we would get to the point of where

Mario would be over 9000 pounds And now he is

And first of all Who's gonna eat that junk? I'm

sorry. You know if any of our listeners like

sushi. I'm sorry. I don't I refuse to eat raw

fish eggs I learned from the turtles you don't

eat raw fish eat pizza. You know you know rats

can eat raw fish if they want but it just Super

sushi That's almost as bad as a super leaf The

plot is basically again, I know we've said this

for the last three weeks of the show But it's

putting the mario characters into these classic

things and I still don't like it. I Again, I

don't know There are times where I missed the

90s I know that's probably bad to say but there

are times where I thought that the 90s were actually

was actually a good decade and had really cool

stuff Sadly after watching a lot of this show

even though I know that this came out at the

tail end of the 80s and 89 Sadly watching this

show does not Make me miss the night late 80s

early 90s at all. Oh my god Any thoughts on the

plot? I almost got nothing, except that as far

as being a Godzilla homage, it's really a poor

one. There's so much material to work with. They

just totally missed the mark. I'm almost tempted

to say that the Matthew Broderick film was closer

on the mark than this. Yeah. Oh, boy. All right.

So I think once again, we're just going to jump

straight to Goombas because I have nothing good

to say about this. The only thing I really wanted

to say good about it is... Even though they're

kind of grotesque the extra -large characters

are kind of cool to look at at times I don't

know just a certain way that the animations done

like when they're facing off against each other,

but other than that they're just specifically

Mario, I am sorry they They basically turned

him into the blob from x -men is what they turned

him into. Oh, yeah And it's just so bad. It really

is. Well, that's kind of the theory of old cartoons

is that How do we draw someone who's a giant?

Let's make them really fat. It doesn't work.

No, that's a bad theory of old cartoons. Alright,

let's get to stomping on those Goombas. So for

the Goombas, I know you're gonna say this as

well. When Koopa got shrunk, worst... Such horrid

animation on the shrinking. It was so bad because

what they did was Instead of shrinking him and

leaving the buildings the same size they raised

the size of the buildings Such bad animation

yeah, it wasn't even like See what they should

have done was they should have like also made

it so that the street was widening But they didn't

do that. So what it looked like was that the

buildings were growing like literally growing

up like plants out of the ground Yeah, it's like

that the effect doesn't work No, the effect doesn't

work at all He's like, oh no, what am I doing?

I'm shrinking shrinking now You were there and

you were there and you were there Oh boy, and

honestly after God how many episodes have we

done of this none of the podcast but of the show

we've done Coopzilla Coopzilla 34 episodes out

of 50 something episodes. We're 34 episodes in

I am so sick of lives to coop another day. I

know that's saying I get it but Again, it goes

to the whole thing of if he's if the if he's

going to play a character if it's going to be

a character based on Godzilla or if it's gonna

be a character based on Goldfinger or if it's

you don't use your main villain catchphrase if

you're in a character I Just yeah, I'm so sick

of lips to coop another day. I Honestly, I know

you're not looking forward to it when we get

to it. But honestly after watching 30 something

episodes of this show I'm so ready for Mario

3. I'm so ready to enjoy the hell out of that

show, because this is so bad in comparison. Eat

his filling pasta. Too much food. Oh my god,

that's right. At the very end, he shrinks down

to, like, micro size. And of course Mario, he

thinks of the bright side of this. He sees the

silver lining. He's like, oh my god, I can eat

even more pasta Because the serving size will

be like so much bigger than he is I Swear if

anyone our age now is and I and I know this is

kind of far -fetched But if anyone our age now

got you know, some sort of illness from being

obese They could so suit Deke if they ever watched

this cartoon honestly because this is all Deke's

fault I know that's probably a stretch, but we're

34 episodes into this show for Super Show and

I can't remember a single cartoon short that

we've talked about that doesn't have him eating

after 34 episodes. I can't remember a single

one, maybe one from last week or the week before,

but honestly right now, as of this moment, I

can't remember any. these cartoons that he is

not eating or talking about eating or thinking

about eating or I just let's move on to the final

episode of the day Christmas in July yay curse

you Rudolph The final episode of the day ladies

and gentlemen for episode 7 of pixels and animation

This show has really become a pain in the ass

Koopa Claus Oh my god Oh my god, alright Koopa

Claus and little Mario's was the live -action

segment So you're gonna have to talk about the

live -action segment because it was not I don't

think it was on the DVD Okay, the live -action

segment features Brian, I'm gonna say his last

name is Bonzal. Bonzal, okay, yeah, it was. Yeah,

it was the child actor who played Andy Keaton

in the later episodes of the sitcom Family Ties.

Family Ties, yeah. And he ran away from home

and he decided he's going to live with the Mario

Brothers. He's got his suitcase. He's ready to

move in. And the Mario Brothers are trying to

convince him to go back. And they tell a story

about when they were kids. And it's Mario. It's

the grown up actors acting like children. And

Mario decides he's going to run away from home.

And he comes back and his mother, who is not

played by Lou Albano, but you see her over the

shoulder and you hear the voice of Lou Albano

doing his doing his mama voice. And the lesson

at the end, I'm just going to cut to the end.

The lesson at the end is he should go back home

because if he runs away from home, his parents

are going to enjoy it too much. Wow. Yeah. Yeah.

Now, there's actually an error in the credits.

Yeah. They spell his name wrong. Oh. They spell

it as Boncel. Not Saul they use an E instead

of an A. Yeah, and I I searched it that way and

they're like Wikipedia is like we have no idea

what you're talking about Do you mean this and

I'm like, ooh, yes and Looking at his outside

of him playing Andy in Family Ties Looking at

his filmography. Yeah The only thing I remember

him from is playing Preston Waters in 1994 is

blank check Wow Like I don't even remember do

you know the muffin man? I honestly don't whatsoever.

I don't remember that at all and he actually

won a He won Did he winner was oh he was nominated

for that young artist award best young actor

starring in TV movie pilot or special he was

nominated for that but he won for he won three

of the young artist awards for family ties, which

doesn't surprise me. Honestly, when I first saw

him in this episode, I thought it was Brian from

ALF. I really did. I thought it was Benji Gregory

from ALF at first. Oh boy. All right, so the...

Short here is Koopa Klaas of the said Koopa kidnap

Santa Claus in order to ruin Christmas featured

song is Bobby Helms's Jingle Bell Rock of course

Yep, and Bobby would have been around to see

his song be covered because um he didn't pass

away until 1997 Koopa Claus the plot. It's the

same Christmas. It's basically an animated version

of Scrooge Without the ghosts it really is what

it is Because he keeps saying bah Koopa what

he keeps using a version of bah humbug. Yeah,

but it's Do you have any thoughts on the overall

plot? Well, it does have that angle up to it

but but Dave kind of split the Scrooge character

in this because Toad is the one who's being all

materialistic about... Actually that's not a

Scrooge thing at all, never mind that. You know,

that's like a different story and I'm kind of

blanking out what it is. Well, the Scrooge thing

is Koopa where he... Yes, it is Koopa because

he wants all the money and he wants to ruin...

Basically Koopa is the Grinch and Scrooge all

in one. And and toad toad is more of Like any

movie that has a kid that is just concerned about

presence. Yeah, you know I Would almost enlighten

it to even though I think this aired before the

film came out. He's pretty much the Kevin McAllister

character. Yeah You know, he's pretty much home

alone before you know, you know and all that

but um You know this This episode I Don't know

and I have absolutely nothing good to say Nothing,

I'm sorry folks. I'm really sorry. I'm we are

trying here but and I know Neil warned me but

it's when you're sitting here trying to analyze

something and look at it and Pick it apart because

that's what we do here at pixels and animation

We are trying and we do have you know We've we've

praised the animation at times and we've praised

the voice acting at times and you know I'm sorry

the last I would say the last three weeks of

podcasts there hasn't been very good episodes

Maybe one or two from episode five to episode

seven. I'm sorry Hopefully, you know next couple

of weeks episodes eight nine and ten or something

will will have some better episodes, but Yeah,

it's uh, it's pretty bad. So let's just get do

you have anything else you wanted to bring? Well,

I will say that this this episode is probably

the best animated episode since the pilot because

I know this right away that toads Particularly

toad they seem to enjoy animating toad. He had

a lot of good expressionism of this Yeah, and

there were You didn't see that the frame rate

drop or anything so it was pretty well animated

so I'll give it that Cool. All right. Well, yeah

Toad Let's get to the goombas It's a bird! It's

a plane! It's Koopa Kline! Let's give him a little

Christmas present to melt their frozen pipes,

eh? Alright, let's stomp on some Goombas. Seriously,

Toad? Really? Oh my g - Like, he is the worst

spoil - Like, I'm an only child, okay? I know

I was a spoiled brat at this time of year, quote

unquote, seeing as how, as of this episode recording,

this is Christmas in July, but you know, Christmas

time, I was kind of like this, but I was never

as insensitive as Toad is in this entire fucking

episode. It's just so bad. Why is Mario the only

one in Hawaiian garb? I don't know. Luigi is

still wearing the same old overalls. I just want

to bash his brain. Since you mentioned that at

the beginning of the episode where they come

bounding up out of the ground through an underground

tunnel, I'm like, wow, this is totally a Bugs

Bunny thing. It totally reminded me of when he

popped up into the Arctic and he's like, Pismo

Beach. Pismo Beach and all the clams you can

eat. I expected a wrong turn at Albuquerque,

Joe. Yeah, wrong? Yeah, that's what I was expecting

too. Now that you say it, yeah. Maybe we should

just do a Looney Tunes podcast to replace these

episodes. Toad, you jackass. You are even more

evil than Koopa. Oh my god. It just... This is

a Toad -centric episode that just sucks all around.

What do you got um, let's see it oh first of

all the ending I mean Toad finally understands

the meaning of Christmas and he goes up he runs

up to Santa and he Hands over his present that

he got earlier in the episode. He's like here

if you Because because the workshop is frozen.

So he's like here Take my take my snowboard at

least you'll have one present to give and then

of course that they do the thing where it's like

his heart grows three sizes that day and like

the spirit of christmas radiates from him and

santa hugging and it causes the ice to melt and

i'm like come on yeah that's so bad it's just

so so bad I almost wish, and I know they were

at the point, I know technically this isn't an

action cartoon or an action show. This isn't

like He -Man or Transformers where you needed

to have PSAs. I almost think by this point in

the series they needed to have PSAs at the end

instead of the rest of the live action stories.

Oh my god. Alright, so we're gonna take a quick

break and we'll come back with our ratings and

final thoughts and to close the show out after

this. As long as we're here, eh? Did you plan

this, Toad? Well, it is Christmas time, Mario.

the Super Mario Bros. Super Show! Alright, we

are back. For ratings, Mighty McMario and the

Pot of Gold, what do you give it? Probably a

one. Sort of funny. Yeah, it was pretty funny.

Again, I was waiting for, like I said before,

you know... the real lucky to pop up with some

cereal, but it was pretty funny. I'll give it

a two. It wasn't an episode where I was like,

oh my god, but the constant bad luck is really

what takes three points off. It took them all

of that 11 minutes to realize, hey, let's just

go beat Koopa's, ugh, yeah, so I'll give it a

two. Mario meets Koopzilla. What do you give

it? Oh, zero. This was like zero love for Godzilla

and they had such an opportunity to homage the

movie series and they just didn't. Yeah. Yeah,

I'm right there with you. It's just so bad. It

really, really is. They really shouldn't have

done this at all. Like this shouldn't have even

been an available suggestion for an episode at

all. Koopa Claus, what do you have Koopa Claus?

I'll I'll give it two It was well animated and

it had some funny spots, but it was just so Kind

of so campus it with with toad just being such

a spoiled brat for the entire episode and then

at the end he does like a 180 and Shows the true

meaning of the Christmas Yeah, I'm gonna give

it a one. I the only reason why it doesn't get

a zero is because of a really, you know good

animation but totally There is a there used to

be an email chain like back in 98 99 when email

chains were the big thing of you know, send 90

people on your list this one email You know,

it's kind of like a little chain letter thing,

but there used to be this email chain joke where

degrees of cold and dealing with lawyers and

it was like 90 below zero lawyers dig into their

own pockets you know and really honestly that's

what this episode is for me but i'll give it

a one simply because the animation does save

it a little bit but this episode was like the

whole episode i was watching and i was i almost

started pacing sam was get out of my chair and

just started pacing because every time toad said

something i wanted to punch my fucking screen

because it was just so horrid just bad execution

all around So we want to thank you for joining
