Mortal Kombat Defenders of the Realm Part 1 Review
About this Episode
Much has changed since the last Mortal Kombat
tournament. Dark forces of Outworld have begun
invading the Earth Realm. These attacks are seriously
weakening Earth's dimensional fabric, enabling
not only Outworlders to enter the Earth Realm,
but warriors from other domains as well. Only
the most extraordinary warriors could possibly
meet this challenge. Liu Kang. Princess Kitana.
Sub -Zero. Jax. Sonya blade Mike wolf Kiva Curtis
striker Driven by purpose and bound by honor
these are the defenders of the realm Hello and
welcome to the latest episode of pixels in the
animation. I am one of your host Deidre and Mike
and joining me in this Epic journey is TV's mr.
Nail the super -sized guy. Oh wait the wrong
podcast wrong podcast, dude. I Don't know maybe
at this point. We should extend the show to include
wrestling video game cartoons. Anyway, no, no
It's bad enough what we've already gone through
in the last four years or heard of how long the
show's been going on. But yeah, this is the animation.
We are back on a semi -releasing kind of basis.
We're in episode 58 here. This is gonna be part
one of two for Mortal Kombat Defenders of the
Realm. And this is going to kick off... completely
different era of the podcast because this stuff
is unlike anything we've ever seen before after
Mortal Kombat we will have you're gonna cringe
at this I know you are four episodes only because
it's just easier to do them this way four episodes
for Street Fighter season one part one part two
season two part one and part two and after that
we have something even more terrifying dark dark
stalkers season one part one and part two and
then we get to some fun from episode 66 to 68
we will be doing earthworm gym okay so there's
that And then episode 69 is gonna be that weird
random franchise episode we were gonna do which
includes Battletoads and what was the other one
you had mentioned? The other Mortal Kombat cartoon
which the name escapes me at the moment and there
is... Oh, uh, Bubsy. Bubsy, that's what it was.
Yeah, that's the one you always mentioned. And
then after that we're gonna do a general episode
overall discussion on Donkey Kong Country because
I just can't. No, and then after that from episode
71 to 71 to holy crap Alright episode 71 of the
podcast episode 93. Oh my god We're gonna be
going through all episodes of both sonic cartoons
first the dark one sad am then the adventures
of sonic so sonic is pretty much gonna Be the
swan song of the podcast Neil opens a beer yay
we can only be drinking at this point who knows
so Mortal Kombat defenders of the realm I did
not plan this folks between myself and Neil we've
had a lot of things going on in our personal
lives I'm not gonna say a lot of what that is
on my end it's mainly my mom passed away last
year but 2015 was a year of hell so we didn't
really get a chance to record anything and it
almost seems fitting wouldn't you say since this
is the 20th anniversary since Mortal Kombat defenders
of the realm came out came out 20 years ago this
year I can tell you're so excited when was the
first time that you saw this I Probably around
the time it came out and I saw it once I was
like, yeah, this is not something I need to see
I mean, it's not terrible. It's one of those
cartoons where if it was wedged between like
Freakazoid and Animaniacs I would I would sit
through it just to get through it But if like
real Ghostbusters was on another channel, I would
immediately flip over so it's one of those cartoons
and unfortunately this cartoon was I think sandwiched
between the Street Fighter cartoon and One of
those other shitty cartoons. I don't I don't
think it was dark stalkers, but it has in the
Wikipedia article for it at the very very bottom
where it says see also Yeah, it lists Street
Fighter and dark stalkers. I don't know if that's
obviously that's just references from Wikipedia
But I I don't know if that was what it was sandwiched
between but yeah, I mean I had seen this like
a briefly but I would rather be strapped to a
chair watching Annihilation over and over and
over again on this cartoon. I know Annihilation
is bad. I know people hate Annihilation, but
Annihilation is better than this. What about
Mortal Kombat Conquest? That was the TNT series
that aired after WCW Monday Nitro for like a
season. Was it a cartoon? It was live action.
It was kind of okay. See, I'm not a die -hard
MK fan. I'm kind of like, like, when Mortal Kombat
1, 2, 3, and 4 came out back, way back in the
day, like, I got it. I thought it was cool. I
thought it was interesting. I like certain characters.
When the first movie came out, I got more interested
in it, but I've never really, like, I've never
followed the franchise like a lot of people have.
I enjoy playing the games. I mean, you know.
i mean each of those original four games had
some really cool characters in it uh... i'll
say right now i could not stay in the fact that
they gave sub -zero brother but whatever was
one way to keep the name alive i guess uh...
you know you know for a game called mortal kombat
i think he was like one of only two characters
to officially have died in the can of the original
games like the other one was johnny cage The
only reason why they killed Johnny Cage off is
because the actor Was in a commercial for another
game a competing game and they fired him Jesus
That's So Mortal Kombat defenders in the realm
it's only 13 episodes and only had one season
Before we get in go ahead say mercifully. Oh,
yeah. Yeah mercifully Yeah, I don't think anyone's
asking why isn't there more of this It actually
got a finale though that was kind of weird Kind
kind I got a finale Well, they gave it an episode
that it could it could end on that and if they
didn't get another season Oh, yeah, at least
we still have this Yeah, I mean the finale was
kind of I hate to say this in a podcast about
Mortal Kombat, but Jesus Christ, that ending
was almost Disney. As far as, oh, Liu Kang is
gonna go off with the princess and... God. As
long as we have each other, Liu Kang, oh my God,
give me a break. This dominatrix princess girlfriend.
Yeah, yeah. So before we get into the episode,
because we are going to be reviewing... this
episode by episode in this show in these two
podcasts just like uh... we did originally in
uh... in the super show stuff but we're going
to be doing seven episodes of this podcast and
six episodes in part two so we can get all thirteen
done uh... is the only way i can get it cut down
to two podcasts so but we have to go over the
voice cast before that because you have clancy
brown as raiden brian tochi yep that's right
the voice of movie leonardo as lu kang crease
summer no boy you keep your favorite tiny tune
as katana i don't mind her no i i love crease
summer i i i just meant you know you and ben
and your elmyra and all that stuff yeah we kind
of got hung up on elmyra yeah Tongue two three
one two And then you have Dylan from 90210 is
sub -zero Luke Perry what the hell did he need
this is 1996 as far as I know Beverly Hills 90210
was still very popular in 1996 right did he need
a paycheck that week or that I Don't know it's
my normal Go to is that he needed to rent money,
but if you saw you know Yeah, exactly. Dorian
Harewood as Jax, which he's done some cool stuff.
We'll go over his stuff here in a second. Olivia
Davao as Sonya. That was not inspired casting.
Oh wow, Neil Ross as Shang Tsung. Yeah. I've
got better things to do tonight than die. As
much as I love Neil Ross and I interviewed him
a couple years ago, I think it was the last year
or the year before on GCRN, I did not know he
was going to be the voice of Shang Tsung and
my entire notes through half of these episodes
are why couldn't they have gotten the movie actors
to do voices? Then you have... The man himself,
Hellboy, Ron Perlman, the striker. I didn't even
recognize Ron Perlman's voice. Really? I didn't
at all! I'm gonna have to go back and watch like
five minutes of an episode. I caught myself there.
So, all right, with this voice cast, and it doesn't
even list some of the other characters, even
in the show, because I looked at the end credits
of the show, it only lists the core team here.
I just kick. So, Brian Tochi as Liu Kang, it
kind of worked, but not really. He doesn't have
the same inflection and the same emotion that
Robin Shu brought to the live -action role. Kree
Summer as Katana works, but I don't know. It's
just Kree doing her normal voice, and there are
some times where she's speaking as Katana where
she changes her inflection a bit. Poor Lex Luthor,
I mean... This was the year that you know, Superman
the animated series came out and Clancy Brown
was the voice of Lex Luthor and holy crap He's
also Raiden why? Well, that's one of those where
he probably just took as many jobs as he could
and he's like, well one of these is gonna stick
Yeah, thank God The reason why I mentioned Dorian
Harewood as the voice of Jax is because I believe
wasn't he? wasn't he war machine in the iron
man yeah he was warming yeah i know that's why
i recognize his voice he was war machine in the
in the 1994 iron man cartoon he didn't get in
there until season two but um but yeah uh this
this cast i what are your overall because oh
my god this cast um respectable cast what are
they doing here i don't know yeah i um It I'm
really surprised it didn't list it here. It doesn't
even and actually on the Wikipedia article it
lists various Like if there's notes like oh special
guest star of you know guest voice Don Lewis
is Shiva or Guest voice Reno Romano is rain You
know so it lists that kind of stuff for special
guest voice Frank Welker is six -headed creature
great I serious Kevin Michael Kevin Michael Richardson
as yeah Yeah Yeah One of the episodes you had
John Rhys Davies, which was strange but cool.
Yeah The only one it doesn't list for a voice
and I wish I could find this I mean maybe I can
find it when we take a break or something But
it doesn't list the asshole who is voicing scorpion
Cuz I'm sorry that is one voice you needed the
movie Whoever did the voice for the movie character?
The good over here the guy in this sounds just
like he Yeah, yeah, get over here It's like what
the fuck is wrong with you So yeah, we're gonna
get into this we're we're going to be always
you people better love us for this is going to
be sheer torture said money yes eight that's
the truth send the money now we'll be back in
a moment with episode one combat begins again
So where's the rip? Mountains. Tibet. There's
an ancient burial ground in those mountains.
It's built into the side of the cliff face like
a fortress. If Scorpion takes it before you do,
he can hold it indefinitely. That works both
ways. If Scorpion holds up in his burial fort,
we'll be able to keep him pinned down there.
Ah, ah, ah, not so simple. I'll explain on the
way. You're coming? Give me a... Alright, first
up, episode 1, combat begins again. The writer
for most of these is Sean Catherine Derrick,
okay? The defenders of the realm face a pack
of invading cybernetic units, seemingly Shao
Kahn's basic foot soldiers led by Sektor. voiced
by Dorian Harewood and Cyrax. The situation takes
a turn for the worse until Sub -Zero intervenes
and assists the warriors, forcing the invaders
back to Outworld. Sub -Zero tries to warn the
warriors of the incoming threat from Scorpion,
although Sonya Blade is hesitant to believe him
due to the fact he betrayed his clan, dun dun
dun. You know what I noticed about this show?
All of these episodes is... they are so ham -fisted
certain lessons and emotions and oh my god woe
is me stories every every all 13 episodes have
a woe is me story for every single character
yeah you know what's weird about this is that
this show feels like i've seen it before in a
different program i don't know i can't really
place it but like every episode feels like something
i've seen before it's like cookie cutter tv writing
Yep, and the first note I have Shut the fuck
up Sonya Combat time is a catchphrase that get
old and tired fast like after one use Yeah, pretty
much And this is Olivia Davao. I mean she did
starfire in Justice League. She's she was the
you know The the arch nemesis of Robert Goran
in law and order criminal. I mean come on I just
don't get it. I Do like even though it's still
kind of pissed for I do kind of like the animation
The animation is for the time for it being 20
years ago. It's not the worst animation It is
it is leaps and bounds better than the Street
Fighter cartoon and the Double Dragon cartoon
Well anything's leaps and bounds above the double
dragon You know, it's a good thing I didn't remember
about that because yeah, I kept very quiet hoping
that you You know the voice acting yikes just
yikes Oh my god double dragon cartoon zero stars
all the way around every episode zero Reviewed
Okay, there you go Yeah, no, we're already set
on this. I'm just we're stopping at a hundred
episodes. That's it or just no way I mean we've
been doing this show for god three four however
many long years it is and no After episode 100,
that's it. But for now I do like the introduction
to the story. They kind of pick up where the
first movie left off. They also throw in bits
from the second movie. They ignore Sindel. They
ignore a whole bunch of other stuff from the
second movie, which most people would probably
think, oh, that's fine. The character, outside
of the voice acting, the actual characters and
how they are portrayed besides their voices,
it's better than I thought it was going to be.
Because I thought it was just going to be crap.
Yeah, it really was they were coming off the
movie because I never would have guessed that.
It did kind of trick me at first because it starts
the first episode as if there were episodes before
it. It was referencing things that we didn't
see. So I'm like, did I start on the wrong episode?
What the hell is going on here? Yeah. What else
did you have for this first episode? just I mean
well it's interesting that they just kind of
like hit the ground running they didn't they
didn't really have like uh an introductory period
they just threw you into the cartoon and and
uh you know it was like like I said it was like
there was an episode before it and we just didn't
see it and uh and Sub -Zero came in and uh we
Don't know if there's not much else to say it.
It just it was just interesting that they chose
to do it that way Not a lot of other cartoons
do that Yeah, it's like, you know, normally a
first episode is very tedious Yeah, and this
one kind of wasn't I mean, you know, we I think
they were going on the assumption that everyone
had seen the first movie Everyone would know
these characters at least the core care, you
know, Sonia and Lou and and Raiden and all that
and You know, I'm sure you know and don't get
me wrong love cleansing Brown I'm sure but you
know, and I'm sure they couldn't have done the
I'm sure what's his name? Oh god, you'll have
to remind me the first Raiden not Christopher
Lambert. Yeah I'm sure he probably would have
cost too much. But Jesus Christ we need really
needed him as as Raiden in this. Well, there
could be only one. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I just...
This first episode, yeah, you're right. There
is an introduction, but there really isn't. We're
led to believe and we're supposed to assume that
we know these characters from the movie and it's...
The way I read it was it was supposed, the way
I watched the animation, it was supposed to,
you know, pick up, you know... several years
after the first movie. Like, it wasn't several
months, it was several years, because they're
trying to introduce Shang, uh, not Shang Tsung,
duh, Shao Kahn, and all that, and obviously Shao
Kahn didn't happen until Annihilation. Um...
We almost ought to have special episodes reviewing
the original Annihilation, oh god. Anyway, um...
the first episode if it's sorry it's as far as
uh... as far as reading it on a scale of zero
five for the gc ralph i'll give it a three take
two points off of the voice acting but i'll give
it a three what about you know it's kind of average
i'll give it a three i think we're gonna do these
two at a time folks this is easier that way stay
in the scorpion was the next episode and in that
one the team soon discovered that rift has opened
up in ancient burial ground in the Tibetan mountains
drawing on the powers of darkness scorpion an
undead warrior who is denied entrance to the
realm of honored dead and banished in the realm
of lost souls has amassed a force of undead warriors
and seeks to continue increasing his force with
undead warriors from all the realms dun dun dun
And the synopsises on the wiki here, people are
longer, I'm just not willing to read all of them.
First few sentences, fine. Okay, so we have Scorpion
here. His voice actor alone, outside his voice
actor and just the pitiful little boy voice he
uses, get over here. It's like Michael Jackson
was in Mortal Kombat or something, I don't know.
Wow, that was weird. Hey, Bubbles. Yeah, yeah.
it was uh... outside of the voice acting for
scorpion in the character had a pretty damn good
story line of this i like that because we didn't
really know the whole point of the first movie
is you don't know a hell of a lot about scorpion
that's the whole appeal of his character and
giving him a story here uh... was somewhat kind
of cool my notes for this one someone please
kill sonya someone please just kill the bitch
My god like I didn't want to even finish watching
this with two episodes in folks I didn't want
to finish watching the series after just oh my
god And my other my other two notes are about
scorpion. Yeah, we're scorpion voice ever Luke
Perry is weird as subs. It just sounds weird.
I don't know Yeah, what about you? What did you
have for notes for sting of the scorpion? Just
the weak voice and you know what think about
scorpion is that The movie and this cartoon both
kind of play him as a villain But in the game
he's more like he's more like an anti -hero.
He's like not really on either side and he's
just this Well, that's that I'm talking about
the old games. I don't know what he's like in
the new games, but he was always a loner Yeah,
you're talking about the classic like I said
one will combat the original game two three and
four Yeah, he wasn't really on anyone's side.
He was just kind of in it for himself and Chasing
down, you know the original sub -zero not the
one of this cartoon Although he does go after
the one in this cartoon because they get that
mixed up Yeah Yeah, because in the games he actually
respects Sub -Zero's brother Yeah, yeah anything
to do with the games folks that you may want
to hear us talk about it's going to revolve around
here at least the original four it's not going
to revolve around anything that is current for
Mortal Kombat kids like I said I am at best a
Hanger on the fence fan, you know, I'm very very
loose with my Mortal Kombat fandom. So Know nothing
of the current generation of Mortal Kombat stuff
All right, we're gonna take a break move on to
episode three after the three and four after
this Ageless not exactly ageless. We don't grow
old but either way I'd rather not be a shish
kebab Age Episodes 3 and 4. Episode 3 is called
Acid Tongue. A new dangerous enemy. The Raptors.
Creatures of a strange reptilian race led by...
Komodai? More than once simply referred to as
Reptile. Didn't he die? No, that was the second
movie that he died in. Appears before the Earth
warriors. Jax's cybernetic implants are damaged
by Komodai's acid. causing the loss of an important
microchip without which his arms cannot function
properly. As a result, Jax loses his self -confidence
and Sonya returns to the place of battle to look
for them but is sort of abducted by Komodai.
I just want to say that this is my favorite episode
just because Jax learns nothing. Yeah, Jax doesn't
learn nothing. It's like, you got to use your
brain, not your muscles. That's what counts.
And then he gets his cybernetic arms back. He's
like, no, I'm going to stick with these. I didn't
learn anything. It's like there's an episode
of Family Guy like that. It's like, hey, Peter,
did you learn anything? Nope. And they just cut
the credits. Gotta love how Jax in the beginning
is like acid. Oh my god. Oh my god. Get it off.
Get it off Lucky didn't land on your skin. Yeah
The only thing and I will repeat this throughout
this podcast and next week's show Consistently
good about this cartoon is the music the music
is awesome As you said, this episode was all
about Jax trying to find his inner strength and
confidence and all that. I feel like this is
just a repeat from, honestly, Mortal Kombat Annihilation.
Did Annihilation come out after this? Yeah, now
that you mention it, that was a subplot in that
movie. Yeah, I mean, the whole thing. Like I
said, I think Annihilation came after this cartoon.
And I'm like, wait, what? What's going on here?
Why are we doing this? I don't get it. Fuck you,
movie. Copy the TV show. Oh, poor movie. Yeah,
this movie... I'm looking at it on Netflix right
now. I'm looking at information. Mortal Kombat
Annihilation 1997. Will say as much as everyone
hates annihilation at least they got the cybernetics
better in that than in this because I'm sorry
Cyrax and sector and even smoke smoke comes in
later Looks like shit. Yep The effects the the
net the energy nets give me a fucking break,
please come on This show so this franchise deserved
a better animation studio I Don't know I'll have
to look and even see what I don't even know the
damn animation studio is for this show But oh
my god is is bad those late 90s cartoons man.
They just can't draw robots 80s were better hashtag
transformers g1 Okay, any other thoughts on the
third episode before we get into the fourth one?
Nope. Alright, episode four. who was once thought
to be long dead, sparking jealousy in Liu Kang.
Rain, unmasked throughout the entire episode,
informs them that Shao Kahn is seeking a powerful
scimitar hidden in the Sacred Temple. The Earth
Warrior is ready for battle before it is too
late, only to discover later that Rain is a traitor
and has abducted Kitana. Dun, dun, dun. Two things.
Most predictable episode of the series. Because
if you know the game, you know Rain's a bad guy
automatically. And two, he should never take
his mask off because he looks emo. He's like,
I'm Rain, I'm gonna go listen to Cure albums.
Dude, you know who he looks like in the cartoon?
Who? Fucking Morph from the X -Men series. It's
like an older version of Morph. It's too bad
he didn't suffer the same fate. Hey, oh come
on you got to have some sympathy for more I have
sympathy for more if I just don't have sympathy
for rain Okay, well there you go So they rely
on a flashback in this episode because the Shang
Tsung and Liu Kang's final battle is shown At
the beginning of the episode But when Shang Tsung
is knocked into the pit the array of metal spikes
is seen in the film is obviously absent in the
cartoon he's done falls to his uh... is falls
to his death on on a flat ground is also shown
wearing his mortal kombat three outfits it just
goes to show you that these people producing
this cartoon had no clue like they had a clue
but they only took like the most strange points
of of trying to uh... uh... going back what would
you read really quick as i forgot what would
you rate acid tongue I'll give it a two I gave
it a one. I just can't Jackson that no tell about
emo. Oh my god, Jax just So as I said Not only
is Liu Kang super emo in this episode He's also
having age issues was it revealed in the movie
that you don't age if you win the tournament
I don't remember Don't remember that being something
listeners. Let us know actually you know what
Mike Dodd comment on this episode and let us
know is Being a mortal a part of the winnings
of Mortal Kombat because he's all worried about
growing old with Kitana or not growing old with
Kitana or if he's going to if and again, this
is 1996 people so You know that robin williams
is a robot in nineteen ninety nine didn't come
to a later worrying about ageism so well it just
it did but they had a really weird take on it
because he technically he's not immortal he just
doesn't age he could still like oh say it is
heart -wrapped out by another combatants okay
you know it's they kind of they said that somewhere
i i vaguely remember that it's like he could
still die but he doesn't age So we are four episodes
into this series. I'm wondering how the hell
they haven't run into any humans at all. Any
other people, citizens, whatever. I mean, seriously,
even with the remote places that they are fighting
the bad guys in, there has to be. You mean to
tell me there's no humans that live in New Guinea?
Seriously, really? Either it's the post -apocalypse
or they're out in the middle of nowhere. Yeah
Yeah, and for some reason the outworlder the
outworlders always pick the most uninhabited
places to come in Like you know as I'm as I was
watching through the series. I'm like hey, it's
masked without the vehicles Because it's every
location you would think of that the mask team
would go fight venom With nobody around except
for maybe one village, and there's not even one
village in this one Moab, Utah, what's right
there? This episode turned into the adventures
of Liu Kang's love life. Yeah There's not much
there's not much to be emo about in that in that
case because he's He's hanging out with the chick
who like always wears a dominatrix Costume, I
mean there's nothing to complain about now granted.
She's not really drawn sexy, but if that was
my girlfriend, I'd be happy Yeah, well, I think
the thing here is is that because of this is
the episode with With rain like the whole thing
with Luke hangs jealousy that's that's where
the emo thing comes in because he assumes Oh
you know because rain used to be her boyfriend
or fiance or whatever the flying flying bicycle
kick fuck i don't know purple rain and on that
from the artist formerly known as or the artist
with those I don't even know what he's called
anymore the artist formerly known as the artist
formerly known as Yeah, I mean seriously folks.
It's just too alright, so Skin deep well, I didn't
ask you. What would you give skin deep? One I
just didn't think didn't care about rain at all
Didn't care about rain. I hated the fact that
they turned Liu Kang into an emo jealous bitch
One as well for me. All right up next is old
friends never die Sub -zero goes out to meet
with his friends smoke who unexpectedly returns
after being gone for many years Sub -zero and
smoke were best friends before on Nero the Grandmaster
of the Lin Kuei clan gave the order for an Automation
of the ninjas sub -zero managed to escape this
fate, but smoke was captured and transformed
Now sub -zero wants to know if his old friend
has retained his human soul a face become only
machine for murder He's more machine than man
now twisted and evil Yes, so true I do what I
do like because I was never really sure Between
Annihilation and Mortal I think it's more isn't
it Mortal Kombat 2 the game when the ninjas come
in the cyber ninjas It's Mortal Kombat 3 smoke
is in Mortal Kombat 2, but he's like a hidden
character and he's not playable Okay. Yes. Okay.
So between Annihilation and Mortal Kombat 3 what
I like about this is seeing how the ninjas actually
became cyber ninjas Like the fact that they take
actual people in Basically turn them into Ninjas
a la Robocop kind of oh my god smoke is Alex
Murphy. Holy crap At the the only note I have
about this episode is at the end How did the
others even find sub -zero? Because he goes off
they say he's consistently. Oh, we don't know
where they are. We don't know where they're fighting
and then Poof. At the end, everybody's there.
I just don't get it. What did you think of the
bromance of Sub -Zero and Smoke? Interesting,
I guess. Not really entertaining. Just kind of
bleh. Because, you know, we're not really given
a reason to care about Smoke. And even in a flashback,
he's got a terrible character design. It looks
like they drew that face in like 10 seconds.
Okay, that's smoke go and The the ending was
kind of like like well, you're still a traitor
Sub -zero, even though I tried to escape with
you and I don't know somehow he's still he's
still like a soulless robot But he remembers
Oh, so he decides he's not gonna go after sub
-zero anymore. So I'm like, well, which which
is it? No, what who cares? Yeah, it's just not
I don't know like like you said it seems like
they'd they'd they'd they'd pulled you know really
homeless guy from few years ago the golden voice
oh yeah that's what they did with this they pulled
a bunch of homeless people out and had them write
this stuff or something something they pulled
people off the street to have them write these
in and it's loosely connected to the movie into
the games and stuff but you know they should
have had that kind of voice uh... uh... scorpion
That guy would have been a better scorpion craft
macaroni and cheese get over here. Oh Damn that
would have been awesome. What would you give
old friends never die? One I'm gonna give it
a two only because I like seeing the origins
of the cyber ninjas Now it's time for Omega Red.
Oh wait, no, sorry, wrong series. Familiar Red,
episode 6. When Kano begins creating unnatural
portals to intentionally torment the Earth warriors,
they realize that the Black Dragon Gang is backing
in. Nightwolf gets very worried after leading
his fellow warriors to temporary rifts around
the world that close before they arrive. That
takes umbrage with the warriors to - uh, deeming
all of these incidents in incorrect readings
of his computers. Dun, dun, dun. Okay, so Kano
returns, Kano's back, he's... basically... huh?
He's basically the mole from Whack -A -Mole.
Is what he's doing with these portals. I mean,
seriously. Like, just... I'll say this, the only
voice actor... To really really nail of movie
voice is whoever the hell voiced Kano because
it doesn't sound exactly like the actor from
the film But it sounds enough of that Australian
accent that he had that it's somewhat tolerable
And that was Michael Dez bars as as Kano and
you had John Vernon as Shao Kahn Wow, huh That
hmm All right notes for familiar read let's see
this series is more emo self -doubt than anything
I've ever seen with all the male characters This
this episode is funny in concept, but it wasn't
fun to watch I mean, it's it's basically Nightwolf
the entire episode be like I'm not going crazy
guys really Yeah, pretty much. Oh, and something
I forgot to mention from the first episode since
we're talking about Nightwolf is, my number one
rule for cartoons, don't show people typing.
It never looks right. God damn it. Stop doing
that. The sound effects aren't hitting the keystrokes
properly. Well, it doesn't look like he's typing.
It looks like he's typing. Yeah, it just, yeah.
Seeing Kano versus Sonya in animation is kind
of cool, but yet again the voice acting is getting
on my nerves. Any notes for this one? Just what
I said, just that it was Nightwolf going out
of his mind and animated typing bad. Rating?
1. I'm also going to give it a 1 I was gonna
give it a 2 for the voice acting on Kano, but
Just just can't Alright and finally in this part
1 of 2 for Mortal Kombat we have episode 7 fall
from grace We have in a battle against Shokan
warriors Sonya acts With overconfidence as a
result striker is seriously wounded He decides
to suspend Sonya because he feels she can't work
as a team with the others After being ordered
to take striker back to the compound with Nightwolf
out to help fending off Shiva's troops They are
attacked by a detachment of Shoken warriors learning
a lesson in teamwork while battling the Shoken
warrior She regains striker's confidence and
is reinstated Yeah, it's all hearts and flowers
and blah blah blah You know I liked Sonya in
the first movie the second movie was kind of
meh, but I liked her in the first movie She was
kick -ass. She was awesome. She was kind of in
your face a little bit, but I don't know this
Sonya just sucks Yep But one thing I did like
about this episode is that they gave her shit
for almost the entire episode They're all Sonya
it's too bad you suck It's like what she what
she failed once they they just didn't let her
forget it And even at the end of the episode
or let they're like, well, okay, we're gonna
let you off the hook this time. I Mean I get
they needed the teamwork episode because Sonya
is not really a team player most of the time
but Striker I'm sorry. This is not the police
Academy you can't You can't put people on suspension.
First of all, how do you put them on suspension?
There's no one else around. It's like either
she's on the team or she isn't. I mean, is she
just going to live there? Like I said, I thought
this was a post -apocalypse. So the fact that
she can be suspended is weird. It's like, are
you going to replace her? Oh, no, you can't.
The characterization in this is just so hard
and at the end The fake emotion on Sonia is just
But this is the teamwork lesson episode Neil
it's the tea everybody needs to learn teamwork
and there's no I in team and there's no I What
were they really going for here like this is
this is not a loose Shimer cartoon You don't
have a PSA at the end in today's episode boys
and girls Pringer and I were picking berries
Just don't eat the poisonous ones to give this
one I'll give it a two I guess Yeah, I'm kind
of right there with you. It's a little bit better
than the the familiar red one but i don't know
so that's that's the first half of uh of the
season here um we're gonna take a quick break
come back with final thoughts and all that other
good stuff and close out this episode after this
well i am shocked and dismayed well now you can't
be both you be shocked i'll be dismayed coming

that I'll probably never see this cartoon ever

this ever again. This adds nothing to the Mortal
Kombat mythology Nope, not really What have you
got coming up, sir? Well, I just spent the last
couple hours drafting the first act of a new
crossover that we're going to be doing called
Crossover Power, the sequel to Crossover Kill
from a couple years ago, webcomic that has a
bunch of different characters from all over the
place. And I'm trying to get a story written

Mike, what is your Twitter? It's Neil. No, wait.
It's a new one. It's P. Lynn Bailey. It's a fictional
Twitter account by one of my characters from
DCN .com, which is funnier and more enjoyable
for me because I don't have to respond to politics.
I can just pretend to be a different character
and make funny clips all day. Yeah, that's what
Facebook is for. Yeah. Speaking of which, be
on the phone on Facebook, go to Facebook .com
