About this Episode

Mike and TV's Mr. Neil wrap up their coverage of the Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 animated series. They discuss their favorite and least favorite episodes, pick out standout and annoying characters, and share their overall thoughts on how well the cartoon adapted the game—including its strengths in music and animation versus its failures to capture the stage-play aesthetic of the original NES title.

It is a legend no one will forget. Everyone thought

King Koopa had left the Mushroom Kingdom. And

then, his Doomship attacked. King Koopa was back

with the greatest danger ever known, his Koopa

Kings. Using their new superpowers, the Super

Mario Brothers rescued Princess Toadstool and

beat back the evil Koopa family. Hello and welcome

to the latest episode of pixels in the animation

I am one of your host if you're Mike and joining

me is TVs. Mr. Deal. It's almost over Yeah You

know, I'm really surprised well, and you already

mentioned this a few times in these episodes

Excuse me. Well, I over here. Oh shit You recall

an ambulance that skill was not supposed to come

back up eat them slowly yeah let's talk about

skittling to my loo this is a horrible joke alright

where were we you were about to die? no before

that You've said this before in the last couple

episodes that Nintendo is really skittish about

doing licenses with the core of their brand like

Mario and Zelda and everything else. I'm really

surprised that they don't have their own damn

animation studio making like Mario 64 or Mario

3D land cartoons, honestly at this point. Maybe

they saw what happened to Square and they said,

well, Square opened its own animation studio

when they got bought by Enix. They're just like,

yikes. They saw the spirits within. Wow, that's

a bad joke right there. Oh man, alright, so this

is episode 41 of Pixels and the Animation. It

is the Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 recap.

I think we're all happy at this point to leave

this series behind. I will say there are, what

we're gonna do this time around is we're gonna

have a few topics, a few little categories that

I wrote stuff down. Favorite episodes, if there

are any. Characters, least favorite episodes,

and least favorite characters. And then we'll

talk about the series overall after that. You

know, I... I remember as a kid, and I think I

mentioned this in the very first, I think I mentioned

this way back in episode 32. I remember watching

this as a kid and it being one of the greatest

things ever because it was one of those things

where Super Mario Bros. 3 at the time was one

of the greatest things ever. And it's not that

this... Don't want to get in the trap of talking

about whether it holds up or not because it kind

of doesn't it It's very dated. I'll put it that

way Is this a cartoon I could go back to and

watch more than once or twice a year probably

not certain episodes, maybe Certain episodes

maybe but like as an actual like between the

time we've done this for the podcast and when

the original show factory DVDs came out I've

only watched this cartoon twice since that time.

When the first Shout DVD complete series set

came out, I watched it then just to watch it.

And obviously I watch the episodes now for when

we reviewed them on the show. So two times in...

God, when did they release that set? 2007? 2008?

Somewhere around there? So for the first time

in nearly seven years. You know. Well, yeah.

Yes, seven or six or seven years. That's that's

saying something. All right. So favorite episodes.

I know you're probably not going to have a lot,

but did you have any favorite episodes? I guess

Misadventures and Babysitting and hmm. I know

there there was at least one more. Maybe maybe

crimes are us. Maybe. I have a few. I actually

have six favorite out of 26, so that's not bad.

I love Super Koopa, because it's just something

that's just so interesting. At least to me, it's

interesting. Koopa actually gets one up on them,

pun intended, and has his own superpowers. I

like that one. The very first episode, Sneaky

Lying Cheating Giant Ninja Koopas, that was just

a hilarious first... Yes, it's bad, but I still

like it because it's the first episode and it's

the first time we see them with the new superpowers

and everything else. Rainstorm was kind of cool

because you... I like seeing Kuki and his crazy

inventions. Again, it goes to that whole thing

of he's the evil version of Donatello for me.

So that's always cool. And the princess in Hawaii

in the bathing suit, so there's that. You know,

tag team trouble? Yeah, it's heavy -handed with

the message and the orphanage and all that stuff,

but at least... It's one of the one of the well,

it's the only wrestling episode the entire series

So anytime they can work in a wrestling episode,

especially now Since Captain Lou is gone, you

know, that's that's always awesome I know you

hate this episode, but I still kind of like it

because it's very rare that in this cartoon we

see the relationship between Mario and Luigi

as brothers and I kind of do like old brother

had a little bit too much frog suit, but It was

kind of cool And then probably my two favorites,

I already talked about Super Koopa, that's probably

one of my two favorites. My second favorite is

Seven Continents for Seven Koopas. Because they're

basically playing off of the game, if you think

about it. Sort of. That there are seven worlds

in the Mushroom Kingdom, not counting Dark Land.

And each of the kids has their own land there.

So I like that one. For favorite characters,

it's pretty simple. Mario, Luigi, and the Princess,

and Koopa and his kids. I mean, that's pretty...

That's the entire cast. I know. Well, I like

how the kids are all different, even though they

are, you know, even though they're basically

gonna do... whatever they can to take over the

kingdom like their dad would. At least they're

not all robots. You know what I mean? At least

they're not all the same personality. They all

have different personalities like Big Mouth and

Bully and, you know, Cheatsy. I think my two

favorite Koopa kids, if I had to pick, would

probably be Cheatsy and Kooky. My two favorites.

Big Mouth has his moments, but usually his big

mouth just annoys the hell out of me. What about

you, favorite characters? Probably just King

Koopa. Just because Harvey Yatkin, he does a

good job with just sounding like a big loudmouth

ass. And that's kind of what makes him funny.

Can't really think of any other character. Maybe

the princess. Not that she had like a stellar

personality, but she's the only hero that didn't

annoy me. Yeah, that's true. For least favorite

characters, can anybody guess out there who's

listening to this show what my least favorite

character for this series is gonna be? Oh, a

crystal! Starts with a T, ends with a D. Toad

and toad shouldn't have even been in this cartoon.

He was not in the game What about you least favorite

characters About half the Koopa kids and I couldn't

even tell you which ones cuz I can't really I

can't keep their names straight anyway, so And

definitely toad toad is intolerable I'm gonna

blame this cartoon for For Toad later on having

a gravelly voice in the Super Mario Advance games

and later on down the line. He is so irritating.

I think the only time he had a tolerable voice

was in Mario Kart 64. So wait, you're telling

me that in Super Mario Advance they turned Toad

into Batman? I should say Christian Bale. Well,

not that bad, but he does... He has this really

raspy, high -pitched voice. He's like, OK. You

have to play the game to really understand. And

he never shuts up. He's talking as you're playing

the game. And it's like, oh my god. You took

one of the best Mario games. You made it horrible.

Wow. That's crazy. For least favorite episodes

honestly the rest of them outside of the six

that I mentioned I Don't think I Don't have to

go back and listen. I don't think I rated anything

out of this series of four or better I'm okay.

There are a couple. I do remember that I read

a forward I don't think I ever rated anything

any episode out of this series of five which

is saying a lot. Um, it's just, I, I don't know

what it is. I mean, I, outside of those six episodes,

the other 20 are just meh. I mean, crimes RS

is kind of cool. You know, so, you know, I, I

like the whole classroom thing. I thought that

was kind of cool. Um, but the rest of them, I'll

give the writers and the creators for this this

series one thing they pretty much dropped the

food angle all together But sadly that'll be

picked back up in the next series Kind of has

to be picked up in the next series considering

the dinosaur eats everything so but like that

I don't like Because it's Yoshi and because he

that's what he does he eat stuff. I don't mind

that uh... you know but they do have one episode

that i can think of right off the top of my head

that is basically a message to the fast food

chains uh... overall i love the music in the

series it's very similar to the game music if

not almost a copy of the game music i'm sure

there's a little there are little differences

but The music in this is classic. The animation,

for the most part, unless you have, you know,

flubs with like, when Luigi was in the cage,

he had red overalls instead of green, stuff like

that. But overall, the animation was damn good,

I thought. It wasn't like, it's not gonna win

any awards, but at least it's not Defenders of

the Realm, which we'll get to later. You know?

i mean they actually tried even though i loathe

when toad and princess have raccoon tails that

did not happen in the game you know mario and

luigi with the raccoon tails look really cool

they look game accurate the backgrounds look

very obviously game accurate i wish that they

would have taken you have twenty six episodes

and I wish they would have written episodes for

the worlds. Like I mentioned, I think, last episode,

there was only one episode of the entire series

that they actually went to Skyland. Well, they

went to Iceland twice. Koopa lives in Darkland,

so I mean, you're always gonna go there. They

had two or three episodes for Pipeland, and technically

where Mario and Luigi and the Princess live is

Grassland. There was only one Desertland episode.

And I guess every time they went, they had a

water episode that was water land. But I don't

know. What about you? Any kind of overall thoughts

on the series? Well, as far as how it resembled

the game, I almost had the opposite, just because

the game had a very stage play type. theme to

it, which is why you see the tile floor and the

curtain and the fact that everything has screws

in it and wind up keys and everything like that.

It was supposed to look very mechanical, like

there's a like the set was built and these things

walking around or just wind up toys and everything.

And that's that's what the game was supposed

to look like. And then this this show captured

none of that. And it said it's kind of this standard

Saturday morning cartoon that doesn't really

get what some of the references are in the game.

Like I said, didn't really understand what the

raccoon thing was all about. We never got to

see the Tanooki, and they would have screwed

that up anyway. I don't know how it's OK. They

might have screwed up how it worked. I don't

know how they would have screwed that up in the

animation. It's a raccoon suit. I mean, it would

have just looked like a bear. because they would

have said hey Luigi let's go get some picnic

baskets oh god don't don't disgrace yogi like

that maybe it's just because i've played the

game so much that i almost passive aggressively

refer to the refer to the worlds by what they

are in the game which is you know desert hill

and and big island and all because they fixed

that in later in later versions of the game the

the original NES version kind of used generic

names so So, yeah, the game was, like, re -translated

a couple different times, so I'm used to the

most recent versions, and this is just kind of

like a painful reminder of, like, what early

Nintendo translations were like. You know, especially

with Princess Peach and Princess Toadstool, it's

like, I almost can't refer to it as Toadstool

anymore. Yeah, it's crazy. It's just crazy All

right, I know this is a short episode these recaps

are not meant to be very long Coming up next

we have new Super Mario World uh... isn't you

know neil is not looking forward to this at all

to down one to go uh... at least it's the shortest

of the three yeah all right what's worse mario

world or super show that's tough to say because

i think the animation in super mario world is

worse but the super show was way longer it's

it's apples and oranges that's true that's true
