About this Episode

TV’s Mr. Neil and TFG1Mike analyze the end of Captain N: The Game Master Season 2, specifically 'Germ Wars' and the clip show 'When Mother Brain Rules,' alongside the Season 3 premiere, 'Misadventures in Robin Hood’s Woods.' They discuss the drastic decline in animation quality, off-model character designs, and the strange nature of these episodes compared to the show's earlier entries.

My main brain tells me you should be listening

to pixels in the animation, because if you aren't,

I'll punch your lights out! When my father disappeared

and Mother Brain tried to take over Video Land,

there only hoped lane an ancient prophecy that

a great warrior from another world would come

to our rescue. I was a bit skeptical when Kevin

showed up, but now I don't know how we'd ever

get along without him. It's action. It's drama.

It's comedy. It's Decian, the superhero webcomic.

Decian's got superhero antics and sexy girls.

Hello and welcome to the latest episode of pixels

in the animation I am one of your hosts TFJ and

Mike injuring me in this epic journey as TV's

Mr. Neil My name is little John, but don't let

that fool you real life. I'm actually very big

You know the saddest thing about this and we'll

get to it when we get to the episode the saddest

thing Right before like two hours before we sat

down to record this episode. I had watched The

season three episode one misadventures in Robin

Hood's woods and then later Later on before right

like probably like I said two hours before we

recorded It came on the movie that it's bait

the movie that episodes based off of came on

stars or one of the My I pay eight bucks a month

for stars. I think I don't know I whatever it

gives me several different movie channels anyway

Kevin Costner's Robin Hood prince of the Emma

said men and tights holy crap Prince of thieves

came on and I'm like, oh my god, this is so much

better than the Captain and episode The funny

thing is, I'm really surprised, since it is based

off the 91 film, I'm really surprised that they

didn't try to get Costner to do the voice. Yeah,

but that would have been money, and that would

have been acknowledging that it was based on

the movie, whereas I think here they didn't even

license the game. They just said, well, we're

just basing it off of the classical Robin Hood.

I think... Tom and Jerry did it better. Except

that it had that little grey mouse in it. Oh

come on, Nibbles was alright. Sometimes he was

alright. He was an Irish drunk in that episode.

That's true. Everybody loves an Irish drunk.

Oh boy. So yeah, we're... fast approaching the

end of Captain and the Game Master. I did not

realize Season 3 is only, what, seven or eight

episodes? It's seven episodes and they're all

ten minutes long. You can watch all of Season

3 under an hour and a half. Oh my god. That's...

that's crazy. I wonder what was going on at Deek

at the time, because that, um... That just doesn't

seem right to me at all. I Don't know that's

weird Anything you want to bring up for general

as far as the The three episodes we'll talk about

today as far as maybe the games that were used

or the the inspirations that they took Not really

because salty inspirations are very weird Well

Yeah, all right, let's go get some germ wars

after this After a visit to the wilderness world

of Congo land Captain N returns to the palace

of power with a strange prehistoric looking rock

Talk about ancient history This looks just like

the moon rocks I studied in school and they were

over a billion years old Wow, that's even older

than my Uncle Methuselah's! Molecular structure

99 .9 % organic matter. 0 .1 % unknown origin.

Uh, right. That's what I figured, too. This exploding

substance does not register in my circuits. I

see you three still have rocks on the brain.

From one rock brain to another. Welcome to the

club, Simon. Very funny, Captain In. Hmm, what

do we have here? Hey, be careful with that! It's

alive! Kevin, what's happening? Whoa! Are you

alright? Alright, first up, as I said before,

is Germ Wars. Kevin contracts a video virus.

Oh, man. He has, which apparently he has no immunity

to, so the end team shrinks themselves down and

goes inside Kevin's body to battle the virus.

Elements from Vazanadu, also inspired by Fantastic

Voyage and Inner Space. I like Inner Space. It's

probably one of, if not the only Martin Short

movie I really enjoy. And I say that in the back

of my mind. I'm like, okay, well, Father of the

Bride, two films aren't that bad. I'm thinking

of all this other stuff, but at least in Inner

Space there was no Jiminy Glick. the plot here

is it's basically inner space i mean sure that

you know for zanadu is in there but it says like

us almost a subplot yeah because they find the

cure it's in this episode more than i remember

i mean i i only remembered like the interspace

stuff i didn't the dog and and gameboy going

through the world of this of the zanadu oh my

god so bad This is probably the one episode out

of everything we've done so far that I've noticed

so many damn animation errors like This almost

I say this very loosely this almost puts a good

spin on bad rap almost Almost not quite but almost

You know the plot is is fairly basic. You know

like Neil said you get a side quest with Duke

and Gameboy Going through Vizanna do and the

main part of the story is the end team shrink

themselves into Kevin's inner ear and they're

like shh be very quiet while we're passing his

eardrum I would have liked to see how that would

have happened if if they if Simon actually said

what what princess Lana? What are you talking

about? Yeah, I know that was like almost like

you for that to happen. Yeah, yeah And they go

into So they end up in all different parts of

Kevin's body They end up in his stomach and the

stomach acid and everything else and I love how

Simon got stuck to the guns of the gum Oh god.

And then to get out of there, Mega Man chewed

off a piece of the gum and blew a helium bubble,

I guess. And I saw that and I'm like, ew, that

was in Kevin's mouth. That was in Kevin's mouth

and now it's in his stomach. Ew, that's like

eating your own throw up. Yeah, that is a really,

really bad part of this story. Like, I don't

even think I have anything. positive to say about

this other than I like the fact that they homage

to interspace that's that's pretty much it the

rest of it it just is bad but that even that

was kind of random for this program because I

don't recall offhand if Captain N had really

referenced any other movies although other other

cartoons do it all the time I mean there was

a Muppet Babies episode that was like this there

was a There was a Transformers episode like this

the episode microbots And what else there's one

more that I thought of and I just lost it but

Turtles. Oh my god. Yeah. Yeah when they go into

When they have to go into cranks body to destroy

the enlarger Yes. Yes You know Season three is

just We're not even there yet. I know that's

the sad thing. This is the decline This is the

decline, but technically this is the last official

episode of season two And it just oh my god,

there's so many things wrong with this episode

there just really are so we I do have several

power pads but I think I'm just going to lump

the two segments into one because there are way

more issues with this this episode than there

are good points so anything else on the general

plot no All right, let's go zap those power pads

if you don't mind I'd like to get a reading on

Kevin's life force meter Well, everything looks

okay For now, but we better keep an eye on him.

Why don't you try and get some sleep Kevin? You

look tired Yeah, I do feel like I just ran the

440 hurdles Meanwhile in Kevin's body So we are

zapping the power pads, and I think the only

real positive note, which we've already mentioned

in the plot, I wrote down, hey, look, it's interspace.

Stock animation alert, when the end team is standing

there before they shrink, it was right before

Icarus's arrow. pixie dust came down and shrank

them it's nearly the same image is when the ultimate

war zone brought kevin to video land like right

before he came when they were standing around

the globe thing and i would like them it's pretty

much almost the same image uh... was that the

horde emblem on duke's armor uh... i didn't notice

when i first i'll see if i can screen cap it

when i first saw it the armor come to life and

and engulf the dog i could have sworn when it

showed its chest it was the horrid bat emblem

but it was like orange um this episode is just

weird that virus oh my god and his henchmen oh

god um yet another animation error if game boy

is on the secondary mission with duke then how

is he at the palace monitoring kevin There was

a split split second and that's the other thing

with Game Boy in this half the time half the

time you only see his d -pad his start select

buttons you very rarely or sometimes you don't

even see the start select ones you see the d

-pad and the speaker the a b buttons and some

of the some of the frames never show up Wow whatsoever

completely late like this is the end of the second

season people now I know cartoons back then were

not you know big on continuity or cliffhangers

but how the hell did the animation get so bad

from that you know from the last episode to this

one oh god I'm feeling the heat so we better

retreat oh no Captain N has rapper's delight

Oh, another little thing. Why does Kid Icarus

need to slide down Simon's whip? He can fly,

dammit. I don't know. And the final animation

error I spot was when the virus says their lost

cause, Captain N is shown in his regular colors,

not his blue -yellow. Germ color Medical colors

or whatever the hell you want to call them. He's

shown in his regular uniform when he's inside

his own body Yeah, what that was about was that

there are video games that have that'll like

show what your armor looks like and it'll be

blue if you're healthier and yellow if you're

if you're damaged or actually here was like reversed

but It kind of reminded me of like the the status

Stick figure that you see in like fighting vipers

or something like that Oh, no, yeah, I agree,

but like in the middle of it at close to the

end of the episode when they free him. Yeah,

it was a big error. They show him in his tradition.

Oh, God. I think they were just pushing this

episode out the door. Like, we're done. Who cares?

They just shoved it off a cliff. What did or

didn't you like about this one? I only just had

a couple notes. Yeah weird episode to go out

on that the bad guy was named thyroid for some

reason and he was riding around of this thing

that Kind of reminds me of something else and

I'm not I'm kind of blanking at it at the moment,

but oh my god, and I love his little henchmen

at the end because I forget the henchman's name,

but the end team come in and everything the day

is saved and He's the only one left and he kind

of like He kind of switches sides at that exact

moment. He's like, yay, we won. Like he was on

the good guy's side. And they let him live for

some reason. Although the antidote that Duke

got probably killed him anyway. But that's another

weird thing is that they killed the bad guy who

was the virus, and they had to give Kevin the

antidote anyway. Like, OK. Yeah, that's just

crazy. Anything else you saw? Not really you

pretty much hit everything so It's like how does

it oh my god I'm actually gonna pull up the the

show schedule for the podcast because I want

to see what episode was before what episode came

right before Yeah, the invasion of the paper

peddlers had better animation than this episode

Wow I mean, you know say what you will and we

already have about the plot of the invasion of

the paper peddlers, but How do you go from really

great animation the last episode to almost complete

and utter crap animation this episode? And then

the animation just goes downhill from here Maybe

they ran out of money for retakes. I don't know

I don't know either but we're gonna move on to

the The clip show after this It was a dark time

for Videoland. The forces of chaos led by the

evil Mother Brain had overrun the Palace of Power

and taken Princess Lana and her faithful company

of heroes completely by surprise. Once upon a

dark and dangerous time in Videoland, the forces

of chaos led by the evil Notherbrain had overrun

the Palace of Power. Princess Lom and her faithful

company of heroes were taken completely by surprise.

We're too strong for them! Who's too strong for

them, King Hippo? What's so funny, Eggplant Wizard?

Who, me? Nothing, Mother Brain. Nothing funny

at all. I only wish it didn't have to end this

way. Outmanned and outplayed, the little band

of defenders known as the End Team was no match

for Mother Brain's minions and fell into her

clutches. Alright, ladies and gentlemen. Technically

this episode never happened. Have you ever read

Wayside Stories from Wayside School? No. Or Sideways

Stories from Wayside School? No. It's by Louis

Satcher. I think that's how you pronounce his

last name. I could be wrong. Anyway, in this

book, it's basically a... It's a school that

was supposed to be one floor, 30 classrooms,

you know. horizontally well the builders were

I guess mixed up the plans where they were on

drugs or something they built it as a 30 -story

skyscraper school I'm telling you dude like I

could mail you the series of books I have it

somewhere I will send it to you see you can read

it but it's basically elementary school kind

of stuff as far as like it's a it's a it's an

elementary school and what they forgot to do

it it was so i remember when i read it as a kid

i was like okay i can follow along i can kind

of relate you know as a you know seven eight

nine -year -old kid i can kind of relate to this

and in this kind of school environment i get

the chapter eighteen and that's one character

i get the chapter nineteen there's nothing there

but one note the nineteenth floor does not exist

there is no ms ours chapter nineteen is not here

It's pretty much they pretty much threw in these

are not the droids you're looking for move along

Without actually having to say that right, but

like how do you build a 30? Story school and

forget to build the 19th floor because it it

skips in the book it skips from The 18th floor

to the 20th floor like there's nothing there

uh... but that uh... that's the whole point of

my little uh... tangent there is kind of the

reason why we're doing this you asked me are

we going to cover uh... when mother brain rules

uh... and i said sure we're probably not going

to do a hell of a lot with it though since it's

just a clip show and a bad clip show at that

description says a clip show of assorted moments

from the first two seasons interestingly two

versions were made the clips in version 1 which

aired on NBC had background music but no voices

and sparse narration by a generic narrator and

Simon Belmont now the generic narrator in season

1 uh... i really wish i could edit this wikipedia

article because it is gary chalk's voice right

i've heard of this primal enough times from beast

wars and i've talked to gary chalk twice in the

six years i've been podcasting i know when i

hear his voice uh... uh... version two which

and w g n uh... chicago and presumably and presumably

on the u .s .a. network had the voices restored

different background music using the soundtrack

from season two and more narration now the narration

in the version two is this i don't know i wish

i knew which voice actor actor this was it's

the narrator that's been narrating the series

to this point The guy that we've always heard,

that deep, deep voice. Neither version has officially

been released, although it occasionally turns

up on bootleg sets and online sites. My only

plot note is clip show. Bad, bad clip show. Yeah,

this isn't even like how you do a clip show.

as far as like other clip shows are done because

What a clip show normally is kiddies because

I know a lot of you have never seen one Back

in the 70s and 80s we had shows that if they've

been on for like like four or five seasons They'll

get a clip show. So, you know to show clips from

like earlier seasons because it wasn't in syndication

yet So it's like hey remember when this happened.

How about this and you know, like And it'll be

revolved around like, you know, someone gets

shot in the face or or the dad has a heart attack

or something. And like the family members are

all sitting around talking about like earlier

episodes. That's how you normally do it in this

episode. It was just like random shit thrown

together. It was like about 60 percent of the

first episode, maybe a little bit of the first

episode of season two and then just like random

shit from other episodes. Yeah, it was crazy

and then when Simon started narrating I was like,

oh god, no Yeah, he's the only voice other than

Gary Chock who's in this it's in this episode

in version one. Yeah in version one I I don't

know what else to say about this because why

would they do this and have like There couldn't

have been rights issues there really couldn't

like I understand like take a DVD company like

shout factory and and and a show like Captain

N or like Super Mario Super Show or Zelda You

know say well, actually the series that will

be coming up next after Captain is a perfect

example I think it was in Mario 3 wasn't it?

Oh, you're talking about Milly Vanilla. Yes.

Yeah In Adventures of the Super Mario Bros. 3,

when it originally aired, Milli Vanilli did several

songs in it in one episode. Obviously, because

Shot Factory either couldn't or didn't want to.

I don't know, and I'm not talking bad about Shot

Factory. I'm not at all. Either they couldn't

or they didn't want to spend the money to get

the rights to the songs to put them in, and they

replaced them. It's kind of like CBS replacing...

licensed songs on like Walker Texas Ranger or

Nash Bridges or it's the same thing. Or WKRP.

Yeah WKRP. And here it seems like version one

like they had no rights to the voice actors that's

that sounds ridiculous to me. Actually I had

heard something else that when Shout Factory

licensed the show to put on DVD this was the

one episode that Deke did not give them like

it doesn't And according to them, it does not

exist in the Deep Vault anywhere. No one knows

where it came from, who made it. I don't remember

where I read this, but someone had a theory that

maybe NBC made it. And I don't really buy that

because it comes off more like a scratch version

of an unfinished episode. And then later they

finished it. for some reason this episode exists

and it doesn't exist in their archive I don't

know maybe maybe it got erased along with Club

Mario and thank God that happened although technically

you could reconstitute this episode from existing

shows because all the footage in this in this

episode exists and the rest of the series if

you really wanted to Yeah, no All right, I mean

I hate to say this and You're probably gonna

pass out when I say this but almost Every episode

of defenders of the realm is better than this

Wow And that's defenders of the realm for Christ's

sake Oh my god. Alright, so we're gonna move

on to the final episode of today's podcast, which

starts Season 3! Yay! At least it's shorter.

True. After a successful mission on Dragon's

Den, Captain N and Kid Icarus stop off on the

medieval world of Nottingham to power up a wolf

wagon. again how fantastic as I was as a dragon

warrior today. You were really smoking, kid.

Yeah, I was, wasn't I? Hey, look, there's a weapons

shop. I'm gonna get a new box train. Be careful,

kid. We don't know this world. I'm a reasonable

man. Hand over the rest of your gold and I'll

spare your sniveling little hide. How pity, Sheriff.

That's all the money I've got. Then what are

we hanging around here for? We've got a dozen

more shopkeepers and peasants to pluck before

the archery tournament this afternoon. Just a

minute, Sheriff. I think this chicken needs more

packing. There's more gold here. I can smell

it. No, no, Prince John, there's none. Cross

my heart and hope to... How generous! Then you

won't mind being one of them. Hey, what's going

on, Hericus? Leave quietly whoever you are and

I'll overlook this intrusion. You're the dude

who's leaving, Sheriff. Without the gold. Says

who? So, ladies and gentlemen, I'm almost thinking

of combining... No, I can't do that, because

then it would make the podcast, uh... Not 100

episodes. I was going to say, since season 3

is like 10 minute episodes apiece, I was going

to combine them all into one podcast. But no,

that would be too much stress on Neil and I,

because one episode out of seven, one episode

I liked. I'll say that right now. And I haven't

even watched. The others I've watched the ones

that we're gonna do for episode 30 but past that

the the last Whatever it is three or the last

three episodes out of the seven I have not watched

yet and I oh my god So season 3 episode 1 misadventures

in Robin Hood woods or Robin Hood's woods or

whatever else after returning from a dragon Dragon's

Den mission, Kevin and Kid Icarus do battle with

the Sheriff of Nottingham's soldiers and team

up with Robin Hood. The 1991 movie Robin Hood

Prince of Thieves was adapted into a game by

Virgin Interactive. I have no idea what to say

about this episode. I really don't. First of

all, you only have Captain N and Kid Icarus.

Really seriously Yeah, it's a weird thing about

this season and it's like I've only watched the

episodes up to a certain point as well And I

don't think there's a single episode where every

single character appears Yeah, it's really strange

This is your standard Robin Hood story, I don't

even know who the voice of made Marion was Off

the top of my head. I'm sure I could you know

spend the time to look it up here in a moment,

but I I'm sorry I hate this I Would rather watch

the Disney movie which is so much better than

this is This was The start of them being really

super lazy Yeah, they switched to a new animation

studio. I don't know where this studio was, and

it is so awful. I mean, all the designs are super

simplified, and the animation is really stiff

and really uninteresting to look at. Yeah, the

animation is just plain bad. I mean, it's like...

comic Golden shower Batman that Ben showed us

a few years ago bad. Oh my god About the character

models that I think what happened is that they

had a guy on their staff who designed the characters

for like the previous two seasons and It's also

the same guy who did a lot of ghost designs and

real Ghostbusters and shows like that and I think

he jumped a class key soupo Because it kind of

has that style from like ah real monsters In

fact, the character on the germ episode was designed

like that. But this season, it's like that guy's

gone, and now all the character designs suck.

Well, the power pad does not look like a Nintendo

controller anymore, whatsoever. The NES pad on

his belt buckle is off model. It's off model

in every episode that I've watched to this point.

It's off model here. It's gonna be off model

in the three episodes We talked about in two

weeks in episode 30 and it's probably gonna be

off model in the last three. I Mean, it's it's

just so bad I was mentioning to you. I think

it was off or I don't think I mentioned this

on air but this from season 2 animation from

season 2 paperboy animation to germ wars to season

3 here in Misadventures in Robin Hood woods It's

like they pulled a Sunbow and went from really

great animation in Return of Optimus Prime and

then went to Rebirth and Optimus Prime looks

completely off model. He's... I'm telling you

folks, watch Return of Optimus Prime, Two -Parter,

and Transformers, and then watch Rebirth. I love

Rebirth. I love the story of Rebirth. I always

will love the story, but the animation in that,

in certain places, specifically with Prime, is

so off -model and off -kilter. It's the same

thing here with these Season 3 episodes. They're

so bad. Actually, I got a better one. Like, take

the episode of, uh, what is it called? The Primitives?

And then go from that episode and then jump to

Carnage and C minor. That's how bad I think the

jump in animation quality is. The jump in the

opposite direction. Yeah. The sad thing is I

really like that episode. Oh man. It's singing

robots! Come on now! You've seen the animation

of that episode. Yeah. I have no power pads.

The only thing I wrote down for You Got Zapped

was, God, this episode is bad. Not only are there

multiple animation errors, but every time I see

the power pad, it is different. And every time

I see Kevin trying to use the power pad, he doesn't

even press the right fucking buttons. There was

a point in this episode where he was supposed

to... not pause but he was supposed to either

jump or press one of the d -pad sections it clearly

shows him pressing the controller above the start

button there should not be a button there I don't

think Nintendo ever made a secondary NES controller

with a button above the start button no oh my

god we're gonna go to a quick break before my

brain explodes and then we're gonna come back

to close the show holy Ugh, is this bad? So how

do you enter into this magical celebration? Well,

if he comes in disguise, whoever wins is sure

to be Robin Hood. That conceited crook never

could resist showing up. And with your niece

hands over the golden arrow, that's when we'll

spring our trap. You know, ladies and gentlemen,

before we get to our ratings, I just want to

say this. To this point in Captain Man, I think

that Neil and I have been pretty positive. I

would say since Zelda, we have been pretty positive

because it wasn't as bad as some of the stuff

that Super Show offered. But now, as Season 3

for Cap... Oh my god. It's like... You said earlier

that they basically kidified the designs, and

that is true. I almost, now keep in mind, almost

only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades,

but I almost don't find Lana attractive in several

shots of her because they make her, the way she's

drawn, the way she's animated, it almost makes

her look like a mother type versus a love interest.

Some of the animation with her is really really

weird. Well to me it's just that she lost a lot

of her roundness and she was pretty uh shapely

in in seasons one and two and here she's she's

kind of blocky like the other characters are

and it's just they really dumbed it down for

whatever uh animation house they they shipped

this off to. Yeah yeah she really got totally

tetrisized didn't she? Pretty much oh that's

Alright, so for ratings for these episodes germ

wars. I gotta give it a one. Yeah Mother brain

rules, it's a clip show. I actually did I Actually

did two ratings for this for version 1 and version

2 since I've seen them both Version 1 I gave

a 1 out of 5 it only gets a 1 out of 5 for the

fact that Gary Chalk is the narrator Version

2 I gave a 2 out of 5 only for the fact that

it is the regular narrator. If you're going to

do a clip show, have it told in story form and

a better story form that this was told in. It's

almost like several jump cuts while Simon is

pontificating upon himself and trying to make

himself look like the hero when he clearly isn't.

uh... misadventures in robin hood robin hoods

woods it might be the first zero i've given up

a long time i don't know uh... but uh... zero

c i i was i was going to give that is your as

well yet yet so before the clip show i was going

to ask that you get it and they get it because

i saw the first episode where they're hardly

there's hardly any talking in it. I'm like, wow,

I cannot follow this at all. I don't know what

this is about. Fail. And then the second episode,

even with the dialogue, I'm like, I don't know

what this is about. I can't follow this. Fail.

I mean, if you want to give a double zero to

both versions, that's fine. Yeah, because the

thing about the clip show is that if you had

never seen Captain Unch before, any other clip

show you watch or any other series, you can kind

of get an idea what the show is about. This,

you would be completely lost. You'd be like,

what the hell is this? Who are these people?

What is this even about? There's nothing. I mean,

if you're gonna watch a clip show, track down

Clerks the Animated Series and watch episode

two. That's the best clip show ever. This is

like the diametric opposite of that. Yeah, pretty

much, yeah. I would completely agree. What about

Jerm Wars and Misadventures in Robin Hood Woods?

Jerm Wars, I'll give it a 1, and Misadventures

in Robin Hood Woods, I'll give it a 0, just because

it's not bad. Yeah, yeah. Alright, what's coming
