About this Episode

TV’s Mr. Neil and TFG1Mike analyze the next three episodes of Captain N: The Game Master. They discuss the mechanical dragon plot of "The Trojan Dragon," the Batman-parody story of "I Wish I Was a Wombatman," and the hypnotism hijinks in "The Invasion of the Paper Peddlers." Throughout the episode, the hosts highlight standout animation, awkward plot devices, and their recurring observations on Simon Belmont’s continuous misfortune.

And hopefully this is going to be a much better

trio of episodes than the last episode. I'm looking.

I'm looking. Oh dear. Maybe. Who knows. Maybe.

I'd say two out of the three. Yeah. All right,

so let's see. What is currently going on? For

GCRN, we've got huge, huge plans. Year five is

upon us. We are doing a complete site redesign.

I saw a preview of it. It looks amazing. New

logos, new menus, new everything. Same great

content. So we're going through that. We've got

several huge projects coming up over the spring,

summer, and fall. For Vixels and the Animation,

we're slowly making our way. We only have, this

is episode 28, we've got, I think, five more

episodes until we head back to the Mushroom Kingdom.

Oh boy. You better count your blessings now.

Well, it's for shorter episodes. Well, that's

because there's no live -action segments. That's

true. Plus, the cartoons are shorter, so. Yeah,

I'll have to look again and see. The Super Mario

Super Show cartoons are like 18 minutes. These

are like 11. Oh, OK. All right. Well, we're going

to get right to it after this. It's action. It's

drama. It's comedy. It's Decian, the superhero

webcomic. Decian's got superhero antics and sexy

girls. Read it now at Decian .com. D -A -S -I

-E -N .com. On the fantastic world of Dragon's

Den, a never before event is about to take place.

Come on, Egg. Please hatch. Hatch? Before Dragon

Lord chars the scales off of me. You got that

right, Stu. I've waited a lifetime for this day.

Why haven't you raised the Golden Dragon? We

never had a Golden Egg before your Dragon Lord

ship. There isn't enough heat to hatch it. Then

find more! he is to be the mightiest warrior

in my dragon army i know i'll get the sun stone

that energizes the palace of power first up today

is the trojan dragon and as soon as i saw that

title all kinds of bad condom jokes popped into

my head Well, you know, Dragonlord is back and

his new plan for conquering dragons then involves

hatching a deadly golden dragon. Zelda and Link

once again help the end team by building a mechanical

dragon to help sneak in and thwart Dragonlord's

plan. Elements from Dragon Warrior and Zelda

2. Oh boy. I guess every piece of animation,

television, film, everything at some point has

to have a Trojan War episode. Just wow. The Trojan

horse thing mixed with the bad costume trope

that seems to be prevalent in all D .E .E .K.

cartoons. I mean, I swear every D .E .E .K. cartoon

ever made has a bad costume episode where...

Someone has to get into a disguise and it's really

awful and yet everyone is fooled by it Yeah It's

sad you're bringing this up now because two weeks

ago when we did the final episode in episode

27 having a ball We completely forgot to mention

Zelda and links royal costumes. Oh, yes Yeah,

that almost brought back memories of that Really

awful ups are that really awful costume he had

in the one episode where there was like the prince

Prince what's -his -name who was like really

handsome, but he didn't want to get dirty It

puts on this terrible costume to impress Zelda

and it's like they're like they're like spurs

on his boots and he's wearing this big frilly

hat Prince vanity Prince. Yeah was something

like that. It was like a pun on like I think

it was like Narcissus. I don't know. Something

like that. I always want to call him Prince Valium.

Come back. Exactly. Exactly. What are your thoughts

on the plot for this one? I actually have a...

Well, I have notes on the plot and on the game

continuity, so I'll probably mix... I'll probably

mix them both, but... You know what I like? Just

to get this out of the way, I like the animation

in this episode. And I think it was actually

a better Dragon Warrior slash Dragon Quest episode

than the last one, even though it seems to have

even less to do with the game. And here's the

thing. I'm pretty sure there are no golden dragons

in Dragon Quest. Now, interesting, there are

golden dragons in Dungeons and Dragons, which...

As I said before, Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy

borrow heavily from Dungeons and Dragons. But

the thing about the Golden Dragons is that if

we're going by Dungeons and Dragons logic, the

Golden Dragons are actually a good dragon race,

as we learned from an episode of Dungeons and

Dragons, the cartoon. But one interesting note

is that they bring up cursed items, which do

exist in the Dragon Quest game. It's like something

you find in a cave or something or you buy I

don't remember but you put it on its curse and

it hurts you and you have to like get some Something

that it doesn't even let you take it off. You

have to get an item that takes it off for you

So that's kind of neat. Yeah in this episode

they They went back to Hyrule and and drained

all the fairy spring water I was half expecting

sprite to show up in this episode I know, right?

Oh, that brings back memories of the swimming

park episode. The water park, yeah, exactly.

Oh, man, that had come back. Well, not that exactly,

but... I was really half expecting sprite to

show up. I'm really surprised that in Captain

N They've pretty much done away with sprite altogether

I would have thought that they would have mentioned

her at some point because I don't even remember

Lincoln Zelda mentioning her in potion of power

Yeah, I think they've kicked her to the curb

Yep for me the plot I liked it. I thought it

was interesting. But yeah, I I remember something

about Golden Dragons. I don't think it was Dungeons

and Dragons. I know that's where they come from,

but I don't think it was that. I thought it might

have been something else that used that. But

yeah, I always thought that was weird. And the

other thing I thought was really weird was that

it didn't stay a baby for long at all. Alright,

let's go grab those power pads. Concentrate your

fire on that cable. I bet you can't beat this

trick shot, Captain N! One trick shot I can't

beat. What? What happened? All the lights just

went out in the palace. Will say one of the coolest

things about the series. I don't know if it's

just because of deep or because of these producers

I'm so glad there's sometimes in series where

you'll start out with a certain voice actor and

a certain voice for a character and then the

next time they appear it's Something completely

different and not at all what you were expecting.

I'm so glad that the voice actor for Dragon Lord

is the same Simon versus Zelda enemies now, that's

funny That's just funny. Oh, that kind of brings

up something from the episode. Remember when

he backed into the spear of the moblin that was

in the bushes? For that one scene, there was

a corkscrew at the end of the spear, and I'm

like, what the? Why is that like that? And it

wasn't like that in the following shot. I'm like,

OK. And of course, as everyone will have found

out by now, by listening to this section of pixels,

the animation, I love it when anything bad happens

to Simon and him being set on fire. That's some

funny shit right there. Yeah, that was great.

He was like painting the face of the dragon and

like Kid Icarus is stuck up fire. It's almost

like a tech savory gag. Oh, he gets burned because

he turns completely black. It really is. You

gotta love those classic blackface gags. It wasn't

even a blackface No, I know completely charred

and there were like even like The direction that

he got burned there. It's like his hair was like

straight flip back or something And again, you

know like you said with the animation so well

done in this one I thought it was really really

cool especially on the dragon effects not necessarily

on the mechanical dragon because it's a half

put now x i guess this will transition into zap

but explain to me how dragon war or dragon lord

who is you know this this massive big bad guy

explain to me how why he is so dumb to see that

it's not a real dragon i don't know i mean this

thing is made from miss shaping parts it's made

from tree bark I don't know I don't know any

other positives um let's see just that it was

a good funny Simon centric story yeah by that

I mean he he got his comeuppance again and again

I mean he had claustrophobia he kept like running

out of the dragon and kissing the ground because

he was happy to be out yeah Simon Alright, we're

gonna go get zapped after this All right, let's

get zapped I only have one thing Simon just stepped

out of the web. Link didn't cut it. Zelda didn't

shoot it. Mega Man and Kid Icarus, they didn't

do anything to cut it. He just literally stepped

out of the web after the spider was defeated.

Seriously, come on now. I guess we were supposed

to think that Mega Man helped him out, but it

sure wasn't animated that way. No, it was not

it was animated to where the web fell apart and

Simon stepped down. Yeah, and then Mega Man showed

up. Yeah He was mega late. That was even he missed

his cue. Yeah Any negatives for this one? I have

only one and it's the another it's another sound

alike the the music they had a parody of working

in a coal mine and in the last episode of this

podcast I had I had put down as a positive the

the sound of like for danger zone by Kenny logins

And I thought that was funny even though it was

terrible. Uh, not this time This I don't really

like working in a coal mine and I liked even

less the parody version of it. So I Gave it a

negative Yeah, yeah, yeah i'm right there with

you it just uh, it was a little it's a little

weird. Um All right, well we are gonna move on

to the next episode after this Up next is I wish

I was a wombatman. You know if wombatman was

a little bit shorter like if it was just his

head it would be him he would be a mega man villain

you know that right if if wombatman was just

a head he'd be a mega man villain um Kid Icarus

must help his television hero deal with Mother

Brain, but finds his TV hero may not be all he

thought he was. Elements from Marble Madness?

Yeah, that's I'm kind of struggling to even make

a parallel for the game I know there is a black

ball in the game and kind of yeah, it's been

a long time since I've played Marvel Madness

I don't know didn't really like it Any any thoughts

on the plot um It's something I know I've seen

before the the sort of fallen hero Type episode,

I think I've seen it a lot of sitcoms where someone

meets their hero and the hero is kind of a Kind

of a dunce or kind of a jerk or whatever. I'm

sure I've seen this in growing pains somewhere

I Cannot believe you went to growing pains I

bet you there's these two episodes growing pains

that are this But yeah, it's a different kind

of episode i mean i almost thought that mother

brain wasn't going to show up but then she did

yeah but that's okay well i was kind of happy

she showed up because it it seemed like it it

had been a while um i'm trying to see it doesn't

list here um who wombatman was i'm looking on

imdb and it doesn't even list him in the cast

credits at all Which kind of sucks because at

first I thought he was I know it's not but I

thought it was um, I thought it was Dan Gilvazan,

I thought it was Bumblebee Now I don't know if

we've ever brought this up but I'm looking at

this now and Do you know who's responsible for

the voice of Gameboy? Frank Welker. Yep. Yeah,

cuz he kind of sounds like like wheelie kind

of sounds like orbit II so I Had that make from

the start. I knew it was Just makes Yeah All

right, so the plot yeah, I've seen it before

and it is a Batman parody which is nice You want

to talk about music? There's some music for you

right there, right? They parodied the 1960s Batman.

It's, you know. Alright, we're gonna go grab

the power pads after this. If this is the warm

Batman adventure hour, how come we're the ones

having the adventure? It's not the real Wombatman,

Kid Icarus. It's only a robot. You mean Wombatman

doesn't do his own heroic stunts? Put them power

pads down. Now, you said it was the kind of a

message about, you know, you're, you know, getting,

uh... the fallen hero and kind of getting him

back up and running again. I kind of saw it,

you're right, I'm not saying you're wrong with

that, you are completely right in that. I saw

it as a commentary on how Hollywood doesn't do

real stunts anymore. That could be too. Nicky

is one hot babe. And I even said the same thing,

even though it's your standard story of a hero

being washed out but gets his stuff back and

wins the end. I still liked it though. I thought

it was great. I thought the music with the na

-na -na -na -na, I thought that was... Of course,

you can put that to almost anything, but I thought

that was really cool that it was kind of a Batman

parody, although... I'm not sure which is worse,

Burt Ward Robin or Kid Icarus? Oh, God. We'll

let the listeners decide that one. What, any

good moments for you? Well, on the topic of Kid

Icarus, I did like that while Batman acknowledged

his speech impediment, told him to fix it. And

right there he became my new favorite, my new

favorite character. I'm like, yes, while Batman

rules. uh... but you're going to have a fix it

occurs it whatever your name is yeah i was half

expecting him to call him kit instead of kid

i was half expecting to call him kit like as

in kit cloud kicker where's blue when you really

need him uh... anything else on the positive

uh... now that was really my only note and negative

stuff Not really no, I'm the same way I really

really enjoyed this one, you know It just goes

to show you folks that sometimes Even with standard

plots, they can be very very enjoyable. So We

are gonna move on to the last episode of the

day Deep in the heart of Congo land. Dr. Wiley

sets one of mother brains evil plans of conquest

into motion That's it, my pet. Bring every last

drop of sap out of the trees. At last, Mother

Brain will have enough power to put all of video

land under her spell! A week later, the N -Team

answers an urgent S .O .S. call from the peaceful

land known as Newsworld. Hey, this bird looks

too quiet to need the N -Team. Where's the action?

Kevin's right. How could the distress signal

have come from here? Stay back! Don't come any

closer, you... you zombie! Me? A zombie? Well,

I guess I could use a facial. Wait, we're not

zombies, we're the end team. Finally up today

we have the invasion of the Paper Peddlers. Oh

boy. The end team takes a trip to an Earth -like

world where Mother Brain is hypnotizing residents.

with a special kind of newspaper ink. Elements

from Paperboy. Now, I friggin' love Paperboy.

I love that game. I really do. I remember I had

the, and this goes to show my age here folks,

I had the Tiger Electronics Paperboy handheld

game for the longest time. Wow. Absolutely loved

it. You know, normally I would kind of knock

the Tiger Electronics game, but I can actually

see that working as a Tiger Electronics game.

It did. It did. But yeah, I always loved Paperboy.

I always thought it was a really awesome game.

And sure, it's a little redundant after a while,

but it's still kind of cool. The plot here is

interesting. I find it interesting that they

have a world called News World. So many different

video worlds and video land. What are your general

thoughts on the plot and stuff? Kind of an interesting

take on Paperboy. Just as a side note, I had

mentioned earlier that the original concept for

the show before it became Captain N. The lead

character was going to be this character, Paperboy.

And the character model is pretty close to what

they had. And I'm guessing that one of the reasons

it didn't work is because Paperboy is technically

made by Atari Games, which at the time was kind

of... They weren't really on good terms with

Nintendo. in fact when this game came out on

the NES it was licensed to another company so

that it would be released because Atari and Nintendo

were not doing business with each other at all

but yeah but on the episode I don't know it was

kind of I don't really like zombie episodes or

any episode where you get hypnotized or you become

you become a bad guy when they touch you or they

trick you into doing something it's it's kind

of like a I don't know, I've always found it

kind of a weak plot device. So this episode,

it really wasn't very, it didn't get me at all.

It didn't like it. But I mean I liked it for

the paperboy elements I liked it for you know

we actively see that Julio is a horrible horrible

paperboy he doesn't hit a mailbox at all and

then Kevin gets on the bike and shows him a little

trick and flip of the wrist and Yeah, I would

most definitely play a captain and paperboy game

if Kevin was the the paperboy especially if One

of the reactions to delivering it badly would

be that Simon Belmont gets hit with a rolling

pin. Yes. Which sadly happened off camera. Well,

she throws it. And he sees it coming and he's

like, oh no, bam. Oh no. Absolutely amazing.

Other than, yeah, I'm kind of right there with

you, because other than me saying that it's a,

yay, it's Paper, I guess I called it Paperboy

World, but yay, it's Paperboy, I don't really

have too many other positives about this, I'm

right there with you. I, in general, don't like

zombie stuff, so the fact that, um, that Julio,

even though he is a child, says these are zombies,

uh, would have liked a little bit better explanation

a more accurate explanation that they're hypnotized

and You might cringe at this but the whole time

that I'm watching them with this green hypnotic

ink all as I can think of is one of the the money

laundering schemes from a pup named scooby -doo

where they use the newspaper office to make the

green ink to go in the counterfeit money All

right, so You have any positives or no? um decent

animation and of course Simon getting hit with

a rolling pin. Yeah. All right. We're gonna go

get zapped after this Maybe if you improve your

toss your customers would be friendlier here.

Let me show you a move. I learned on my paper

route back home Thank you for my new subscription,

young man. See? Just a twist of the wrist and

you can't miss. I suppose you're gonna tell us

he's a zombie, too. Well, maybe not yet, but

he will be just like all the others. And just

when our little mind control experiment was working

so well! Is this brain train absolutely necessary,

Dr. Ali? It's giving me a headache! It's the

only way to connect your brain to the hypnotic

ink! Anyone who reads it must obey your command!

Well, alright! let's get zapped. She unplugged

the friggin' fan. That was one of my notes, yes.

Continue. I know it's not gonna stop immediately

as soon as it's unplugged, but it would not have

gone on as long as it did to fall through the

table to get them like that. Oh my god. And okay,

Keeping with the fan, what the hell kind of ceiling

fan, light fixture, whatever, has a plug going

across the ceiling and down the wall for a, for,

oh my god, there's so much wrong with that scene.

I've seen people who have setups like that, but

it's usually kind of done discreetly. It's kind

of hidden in a way. It's kind of, you know, there's

like other hooks so that it doesn't like actually

drape down over the room or anything. But yeah,

that was kind of weird plus, you know ceiling

fans are mounted to the ceiling Yeah, it would

not yeah. Yeah, it's like, okay. Shouldn't that

be screwed into a stud? How is it that she unplugged

it and just felt who mounted that? Because that

person needs to be fired Maybe it was the father

who was out of work. I I guess he's like, oh,

it'll be fine We'll just plug it in and you know,

the cord will hold it Yeah, and even though we

did skip power pad moments I guess we should

bring up the fact that Princess Lana did teach

Julio how to read So that is one good thing about

this episode Since he couldn't read What other

negatives do you have? I know I kind of thought

that the whole reading thing was kind of lame.

It was kind of thrown in there For for no reason

at all other than to explain why he doesn't get

hypnotized and it's It's kind of a weird dramatic

element that doesn't get paid off and it's kind

of cliche in its own little way. I didn't like

that at all. I thought it was kind of lame. All

right. What are the negatives you got? Let's

see. Just overall, it was kind of a dumb episode.

I mean, just the thing about the ceiling fan.

I mean, I understand that cartoon writers don't

understand how everyday objects work. If you're

not an electrician, you might not know everything

about how ceiling fans are installed and everything,

but you have to know that the thing is mounted

on a stud, for Christ's sake. You have to know

that. Yeah. Yeah, that's a little nutty. For

me, I don't have too many other notes that are

negative I still enjoyed this because they actually

that's one thing I've enjoyed about this series

so far. They've reached into every kind of Now

I know you said this wasn't paperboy isn't a

Nintendo game, but they've really reached To

get as many game Worlds into this series that

that the end team can go to and I'm really glad

that they did do a paperboy episode So all right,

we're gonna take a quick break. Here are some

ads and some other stuff We'll come back with

final thoughts and ratings after this Maybe won't

batman's just having a bad day Not after all

the trouble I took luring them here with that

robot. Whoa! Is that clear enough for you? But

you said if I helped you get them here, you'd

let Nikki go. Go! That's what you get for believing

me. Wombie, my precious, does it hurt? There's

a name for my pain. Alright, we are back. Before

we close out, we'll be ranking each episode on

a 0 -5 zapper scale. For me, with Trojan Dragon,

I'll give it a 3. It was alright, it wasn't awful,

but the only reason why it does get a 3 is because

Simon doesn't know how to face Zelda. and he

did get set on fire, so there is that. What about

you? I'll give it a four. It was a pretty well

animated episode. I mean, the one thing that

I thought was really cool is when Zelda and Link

show up, they actually did some really good animation

in that one spot. I mean, look at how Zelda's

animated when she's shooting the bow. They made

her look really cool. She looked cooler in that

one shot than she did in virtually every other

episode. So I like the animation the story is

okay, and it's actually a funny episode and it's

a better dragon warrior episode than the last

one So yeah, that's true. So it's good Yeah,

yeah, the only thing is did you notice that they

used even though it was colored gold they used

the puff Design for the baby before he grows

larger. Did you notice that at all? No, it's

it's puffs. It's baby puff from the original

episode except he's colored gold versus versus

white um all right uh four i wish i was a one

batman um i'm gonna give it a five i really enjoyed

it uh there weren't any real technical issues

as far as you know You know certain mechanics

not working in the proper way. I really did like

it because Kid Icarus We actually see a little

bit more into his character that he does have

a hero Even though he's a TV Hollywood hero,

but hey heroes are heroes, I guess What about

you? I'll give it a four just because one Batman

is actually a funny character He has kind of

a a dry deadpan sort of sense of humor Kind of

like Adam West, but they're not really doing

it an Adam West impersonation with this guy's

kind of alone It's kind of a lateral reference.

It's like This is how this is how Adam West would

act. So this is how we're doing it Thanks for

everything Julie Newmar No, seriously, come on

look at look at Nikki his his girlfriend. Yeah,

I know she kind of Even though it's a dress that

she's wearing and not skin -tight vinyl, she

kind of reminded me of Julie Newmar Catwoman.

The invasion of the paper peddlers. I suppose

I'll give it a two. Yeah, I'm right there with

you. Even though I enjoy it for the fact that

it is paper boy, it still doesn't detract away

from the illogical crap with the fan. It just...

You know, I wrote that note down, and I'm like,

wow, I'm really nitpicking, and then you bring

up the fan. I am the biggest, like, that's one

of the things when I watch, when I watch or when

I read through anything, ladies and gentlemen,

whether it's for one of our cartoon review shows,

whether it's for the overarching show of Geekcast

Radio, whether it's for the pull bag, whatever,

I am one of the biggest nitpickers. Now, there

are some nitpicks that I can overlook and not

take away from a score. because of the nitpick,

but there are times like this that... No. Absolutely

not. Yeah, I give that one a two as well. So,

all right. Why don't you tell people a little

bit about the current storyline you're working

on with The Sand? What's going on there? The

one I'm working on right now, or the one that's

going to be going up around the time of this

episode? Okay, that. Well, at the time of this

recording, it's not really too far along. I have

a storyline that explains how she gets a new

costume, and there's really not much else beyond

that that I want to reveal because there's kind

of some spoiler stuff going on. Basically, what's

going on right now is that I think this episode

goes up on the 30th of May. got this right which

means this this should be going up simultaneously

with the last page of liberty the american girl

which is not a comic done by me but it's it's

kind of related so i it's just kind of thrown

in there as a bonus and because it was done by

a friend of mine and i'm kind of putting it back

online as a favor so cool very cool Alright,

terrible cartoon that is Captain N in name only.

Yeah. Wow. Germ Wars, When Mother Brain Rules,

and the Misadventures in Robin Hood's Woods.

For now, I'm Dave Joe and Mike with... TV's Mr.

Putter needs a vacation. Jack, you're late. That's

not good. You know it's coupon day. Lieutenant

Pendleton is about to be miniaturized, placed

into this needle and then injected into this

rabbit. Rock and roll. But something went wrong.

And Tuck's about to get a new destination. Inside

gonna back groceries all your life, are you,

Jack? And only 24 hours left for Jack to get

out of danger. So that tuck can get out of Jack.

Dennis Quaid. Martin Short. Give yourself a shot

of adventure. Innerspace. Now the one thing I

forgot to ask you in this episode, I was going
