About this Episode

Mike and Tarah revisit the 1999 teen rom-com classic, exploring why it still holds up nearly 25 years later. They discuss the film's Shakespearean roots, memorable scenes like Heath Ledger's marching band serenade and the famous poem, the cast's career trajectories, and trivia from the production. They also touch on the failed 2009 TV series adaptation and what made the original so enduring.

Army brat? Yeah, my dad is, uh... That's enough.

I'm sure you won't find Padua any different than

your old schools. Same little ass -wife, shit

for brains everywhere. Excuse me? Did you just

say... Am I in the right office? Not anymore,

you're not. I've got deviance to see and a novel

to finish. Now, scoot. Scoot! Hello. Michael

Ekman. I'm supposed to show you around. Oh, hi.

Thank God. You know, normally they send down

one of those audio -visual geeks. No, I do. I

know what you mean. Hey, Michael, where should

I put the slides? Michael. So, uh, Cameron, here's

the breakdown. Over there, we've got your basic

beautiful people. Now, listen, unless they talk

to you first, don't bother. Oh, wait. Is that

your rule or theirs? Watch. Hey there. Eat me.

You see that? To the left. We have the coffee

kids. That was Costa Rican butt head? Very edgy.

Don't make any sudden movements around it. These

delusional are your white rastas. They're big

Marley fans. They think they're black. Semi -political,

but mostly... Smoke a lot of weed? Yeah. These

guys... Wait, wait. Let me guess. Cowboys? Yeah,

but the closest they've come to a cow is McDonald's.

These are your future MBAs. We're all Ivy League

accepted. Yuppie Greed is back, my friend. Hey,

guys. How you doing? Close it, Boogie. Yesterday,

I was their god. What happened? Boogie Lowenstein

started a rumor that I... that I'd buy my eyes

out at an outlet mall. So they kicked you out?

Hustle takeover. But don't worry. He'll pay.

Now, over here... Oh, my God. What group is she

in? You don't even think about a group? Bianca

Stratford, she's a softie. I burn, I pine, I

perish. Of course you do. You know, she's beautiful

and deep, I'm sure. Yeah, but see, there's a

difference between light and love. Because I

like my sketchers, but I love my Prada backpack.

But I love my sketchers. That's because you don't

have a Prada backpack. Oh. Listen. Forget her,

incredibly uptight father, and it's a widely

known fact that the Stratford sisters aren't

allowed to date. Uh -huh. Yeah. Whatever. Hello

and welcome to M .Y .R. Movie Weekend Review,

brought to you by the GeekCaster Radio Network

and Audible .com. I am one of your hosts, Steve,

John, Mike, and joining me is Tara, the rising

star. Hello. Hey, it's great to be back. Yes,

yes, and we are here today to talk about that

1999 classic, Ten Things I Hate About You. I

love this movie Yeah, it's so good It's just

so good. When did you first see this? I actually

did see it when it first came out in theaters

in I actually did in 1999. I think I'm pretty

sure I well I'm obviously I went with my parents

to see it and I think I was only around eight

or yeah, I was eight years old when I first saw

it and I'll be honest some of it probably did

go a little over my head, but it was so funny.

And then I rewatched it when I was 14 years old

and I really enjoyed watching it. It was fantastic.

And even now at 22 years of age, I still love

this movie and have it on my iPhone, have it

on my laptop. Oh my God. You do not get bored

watching this movie. It's just hilarious. And

Heath Ledger, I mean, come on. Yeah, I mean it's

sad he's gone now, but when you watch this movie,

it's just It reminds you of him and It's part

of my childhood. That's all I can say Yeah It's

just it's such it's such a good movie, you know

out of all the teen rom -com kinds of things

that had come out the mid to late 90s early 2000s

This is one of the ones that really still to

this day stands out sure It's a little dated,

but I guarantee you the scene where? Michael

is is telling Cameron about the clicks I guarantee

you go into any high school, and you're probably

not gonna have the exact same clicks as what's

in the movie, but It's pretty damn close. Oh

they still exist today They still those clicks

still exist today Right, but what I'm saying

is like, you know, you might not have coffee

heads, you might have pot heads, you might have,

you know what I'm saying? Like, not every single,

like, sure you're gonna have the brain, sure

you're gonna have the jocks. Those are the two

that are pretty much are gonna be in every school,

but like the other ones... That they had mentioned,

you know those can vary from school to school.

I think those were just added I think for comedic

comedic effect to be honest Yeah, I mean I've

never heard of some of the clicks that they were

they were talking about I mean, honestly, um,

which one there was the coffee rate the coffee

guys. Yeah Yeah, and the ones who um, you know,

they smoke a lot of pot I mean That we know goes

on, but there wouldn't be an actual, they wouldn't

be actually doing it sitting at a table in full

view of everybody. So I mean, that was funny.

And I think there was one about the future business

guys or something like that. Yeah, the future

MBAs, yeah. The future MBAs. And that one made

me, that one was hilarious because they were

just so, they're so prim and proper, but really

everyone thinks they're just stupid. They're

just stupid. I mean, they're smart. They're only

that snobby, right? Because I'm guessing these

kids come from really, really wealthy families.

So that's probably why. But it was just funny.

I mean, the whole movie, there's so many parts

in it that I'm sure we're going to get into throughout

this episode. But I mean, honestly, it's a great

movie to watch when you've had a really crappy

day. Oh, yeah. So right now we're gonna send

it over to JT from Saskatoon who has the plot

and some just the facts and information. We'll

be back after this. Okay then, what did everyone

think of The Sun Also Rises? I loved it. He's

so romantic. Romantic? Hemingway? He was an abusive

alcoholic misogynist who squandered half his

life hanging around Picasso trying to nail his

leftovers. As opposed to a bitter, self -righteous

hag who has no friends? Pipe down, Chachi. I

guess in this society, being male and an asshole

makes you worthy of our time. What about Sylvia

Plath or Charlotte Bronte or Simone de Beauvoir?

What'd I miss? The oppressive patriarchal values

that dictate our education. Good. Hey, hey! Mr.

Morgan, is there any chance we could get Kat

to take her mitel before she comes to class?

Someday you're gonna get bitch slapped, and I'm

not gonna do a thing to stop it. And Kat, I wanna

thank you for your point of view. I know how

difficult it must be for you to overcome all

those years of upper middle class suburban oppression.

Must be tough. But the next time you storm the

PTA, crusading for better lunch meat or whatever

it is you white girls complain about, ask them

why they can't buy a book written by a black

man. That's right, Mom! Don't even get me started

on you two. It's the first day of school at Padua

High for newcomer Cameron James, who is given

a tour by AB geek and former member of the NBA

clique Michael Ekman. Michael gives Cameron a

rundown of the school's social structure, during

which Cameron sees social butterfly Bianca Stratford

and quickly becomes smitten with her. However,

Michael pops Cameron's dreams with the fact that

Bianca's father has forbidden her to date anyone,

but he does mention that Bianca needs a French

tutor, which causes Cameron to offer his services

to Bianca despite the fact he doesn't speak any

French. But home life for Bianca is not as easy

as one may suspect. Her overprotective father

Walter is trying to get her anti -social sister

Kat to go to college closer to home, despite

Kat getting accepted to an East Coast school.

Kat distracts her dad by mentioning Bianca getting

a ride home from Joey Keegan, a male model who

once dated Kat. This causes Bianca and Walter

to get into an argument over his no -dating rule,

which Walter settles with a new rule. If Kat

dates, then Bianca can date as well. When Cameron

begins tutoring Bianca, he tries to ask her out,

but Bianca tells Cameron the rules, motivating

him and Michael to find a date for Kat. After

scoping out potential candidates, Cameron and

Michael sit on Patrick Verona, another of the

school's outcasts. But the sullen Patrick proves

to be uninterested, scaring Cameron off. Michael

then describes the deal to Joey, who agrees to

the idea to pay Patrick to date Kat, as he wants

to date Bianca as well. Oh, okay. Yeah. All right.

Are you lost? No. Actually, I just came by to

chat. We don't chat. Well, actually, I thought

that I'd run an idea by you, just to see if you're

interested. I'm not. Well, hear me out. Now,

you want Bianca, right? But, uh, she can't go

out with you because her sister is this insane

headcase and no one will go out with her, right?

Does this conversation have a purpose? What I

think you need to do is you need to hire a guy

who'll go out with her. Someone who doesn't scare

so easily. That guy? I heard he ate a live duck

once. Everything but the beak and feet. Clearly,

he's a solid investment. Cameron and Michael

then lay it out for Patrick, who begrudgingly

agrees to the deal. Michael suggests Patrick

ask Kat to a party, which is actually a revenge

plot on Michael's part, to get back at the guy

who got him kicked out of the NBA clique. Cameron

and Michael spread rumors that there will be

beer and dancing at the party, turning the small

gathering into a raging gager. Kat runs into

Joey at the party and angrily tells him to stay

away from her sister, but Joey, proving to be

every bit the douchebag that he appears to be,

says he can't guarantee that insinuating that

Kat knows what he's talking about. Kat, for some

reason, decides to say screw it, gets blackout

drunk and table dance. After she whacks her head

in a chandelier, Patrick comes to her rescue,

taking her outside for some fresh air. Cameron

does not fare as well at discovering Bianca was

using him so she could date Joey. However, as

the night winds down, Joey ditches Bianca for

another party, leaving her just a little bit

heartbroken. On the advice of Patrick, Cameron

decides not to give up and offers Bianca a ride

home. As he drops her off, Cameron tells Bianca

that he really does still like her, but he's

disappointed in how she used him like that. At

which point Bianca kisses Cameron, revealing

she has feelings for him as well. Patrick arrives

soon after with a drunk cat who tries to kiss

him. Patrick, having developed some feelings

for Cat despite his deal with Joey, declines

her advance saying he'd rather kiss her another

time. The next day, realizing that he's hurt

Cat and his chances of getting paid, Patrick

makes a fool of himself by saying, can't take

my eyes off of you to Cat in front of the whole

school and asks her forgiveness. However, Patrick

is hauled away to detention before she can say

anything. So, Cat sneaks into detention. flashes

Mr. Cheap into the detention monitor and breaks

Patrick out in the confusion. You know, that

old chestnut. Patrick and Cat play hooky the

rest of the day just hanging out. They eventually

go to a paintball course lobbing paint balloons

at each other before tumbling into some hay and

sharing a kiss, both giving into their feelings

for the other. As they clean up, Patrick asks

Kat to prom, still somewhat motivated by the

money. Unfortunately, Kat's feminist ways rear

their ugly head and she questions his motivations,

leading them to have a spat. You are amazingly

self -assured. Has anyone ever told you that?

I tell myself that every day, actually. Go to

the prom with me. Is that a request or a command?

Come on, go with me. No. No? Why not? Because

I don't want to because it's a stupid tradition

come on people won't expect you to go Why are

you pushing this What's in it for you oh So now

I need to have a motive to want to be with you

you tell me You need therapy you know that has

anyone ever told you that Answer the question

Patrick Nothing. There is nothing in it for me.

Just the pleasure of your company. Okay? Back

at the Stratford home, Bianca tries to get her

father to relent on his rule, but Walter stands

firm. Bianca, fed up with how Kat's attitude

keeps interfering with her own life, confronts

her big sis about it. Kat breaks down and confesses

that she used to date Joey and that they slept

together. Kat was not real comfortable with doing

it again and Joey broke up with her soon after,

but Kat retaliated by saying that she'd tell

everyone how small a package Joey has. She didn't

want to do something just because everyone else

was and that's why she's become such a social

outcast. The prom soon arrives and the Stratford

sisters go with Patrick and Cameron. Joey, still

expecting to go with Bianca in hopes of getting

it on, is told by Walter she's gone with Cameron.

The self -absorbed Joey angrily confronts Patrick

about their deal right in front of Cat. Despite

a desperate plea from Patrick, Cat angrily storms

out of the prom. Joey also punches Cameron for

ruining his plans to bed Bianca, but Bianca steps

up and decks Joey, leaving the pretentious pretty

boy with a bloody nose and a black eye. The following

day, Kat and Bianca make up after the younger

sister thanks Kat for going to prom. Not only

that, but Walter relents and tells Kat to go

to whatever school she wants, realizing that

his daughter is growing up. Later on at school,

Cat reads a poem she wrote entitled Ten Things

I Hate About You in her English class. As she

reads the poem, she also reveals not only how

she was hurt by Patrick, but also how she really

cares about him as well. Patrick is clearly moved

by the poem and Cat's honesty. After school is

over, Cat finds a guitar in the backseat of her

car from Patrick that he bought with the money

Joey paid him. Patrick admits that he was wrong

for hurting Cat and for not being honest to begin

with. Cat forgives Patrick and they kiss passionately.

ending the film. 10 Things I Hate About You opened

in theaters on March 31st 1999 and was directed

by first -time theatrical director Gilly Unger

who up until this had been known for directing

sitcoms like The John Larroquette Show and Two

Guys a Girl in a Pizza Place. The film starred

many up -and -comers in Hollywood, including

Julia Stiles as Kat Stratford, Heath Ledger in

an early film role with Patrick Verona, Larissa

Olenek as Bianca Stratford, Joseph Gordon -Levitt

as Cameron James, David Krumholtz as Michael

Ekman, Andrew Keegan as Joey Donner, and famed

funnyman Larry Miller as the girl's dad Walter

Stratford. Critics were fond of the film if the

reviews are anything to go by. Kevin Thomas of

the LA Times said that the film was wise enough

to spend generations in its appeal, and Roger

Ebert gave the film two and a half stars saying

that he liked the movie's spirit, the actors,

and some of the scenes. The music was another

thing that Ebert liked, saying it was subtle,

inventive, and cheerful. And Brad Laidman of

FilmThreat .com said the film was full of heart

and perfectly executed. There were some naysayers

of the film, most of which boiled down to them

considering the film to be another tried and

true teen rom -com, separate from the rest only

by its Shakespearean roots. Now it comes as no

surprise that there were a few other leading

men up for the role of Patrick in this movie.

Heath Ledger actually beat out Ashton Kutcher

and Josh Hartnett for the role. And though she

plays the older of the Stratford sisters by two

years, Julia Stiles is only a couple of months

older than on -screen sibling Larissa Olenek.

And this was not Miss Steil's first time performing

in a modern interpretation of one of Willie Shakespeare's

works. Two years later she would star in O, a

modern retelling of Othello alongside Mackay

Pfeiffer and Josh Hartnett. Now, as I said, the

film has some Shakespearean roots, as it's a

modern retelling of the taming of the shrew.

However, did you know that modernizing Shakespeare

has become something of a cottage industry in

TV and film in the last 15 years? Film and TV

programs such as Romeo Must Die, Sons of Anarchy,

and the upcoming Joss Whedon directed Much Ado

About Nothing have some genesis in the works

of Shakespeare. As for me, this film came out

at a time when I was just getting out of high

school. I remember hearing about it as it was

an update of Shakespeare's work, and I began

drawing comparisons to the Leo DiCaprio version

of Romeo and Juliet, thinking it was going to

be like that. Instead, I was surprised by the

deftly done modernization of the story, and was

quite entertained by the acting of the two main

leads, Styles and Ledger, and have since become

huge fans of both their works. Anytime this movie

is on TV, I stop and watch it. No problem. It's

just that good. I'm JT from Saskatoon, and this

has been Just the Facts for 10 Things I Hate

About You. Now I'm going to send it back to the

rest of the guys on MWIRE. Later. Why so serious?

You're right, she's still pissed. Sweet love,

renew thy force! Hey! Don't say shit like that

to me. People can hear you. Look, you embarrassed

the girl. Sacrifice yourself on the altar of

dignity and even the score. Listen, don't say

shit like that to him. People can hear you. So

thank you, JT, for those just the facts. As we

said before, we should probably let the listeners

know that there's a severe age range between

Tara and I. I am in my 30s, she's in her 20s,

so I saw this when I was 19. Saw this in theaters

when I was 19 in 1999 so Yes, yes, but but still

I mean, you know It's it's one of those things

where it doesn't matter what you're well, it

kind of kind of does obviously, you know It's

good thing your parents took you to see it when

you were eight But you know, it's one of those

things where not all people can watch this movie,

but anyone over a certain age or whatever you

know should be able to watch this and even if

people don't get all the references and all the

jokes you know it's still a good wholesome movie

to to watch well i shouldn't say wholesome but

it's it's a really really good film um i can't

believe alice and jannie from the west wing is

in this is the principle neither can i honestly

that's so strange to me To be honest if I could

describe this movie in one word I would say it

almost feels like a Saturday night Saturday night

live sketch in some aspects I mean, I'm just

to give an example you have the scene where he's

talking to the the jock and He and he draws a

penis on his face. I Mean that was that was just

like wow, you know in the whole movie just to

see that one scene. And he's like, I have a penis

on my face, don't I? Yep, yes you do. I mean,

back then I didn't know what the hell he had

drawn on his face. But now when you see it, you're

just like, oh man, that poor guy. I mean, I've

heard of nerds being picked on really badly.

I mean, if you see the movie, you know, Revenge

of the Nerds. But I mean... Can honestly say

I've never seen anyone when I was in high school

or whatever had a penis drawn on their face To

be quite honest never seen that but that's kind

of one of the things you can expect from this

movie it's just those kind of psych -gag kind

of things and It just you know, it's this movie

really pushed the boundaries. It kind of did

For a teen flick. I mean this was way before

you know, we had mean girls come out So this

was kind of like the 90s version of Mean Girls

if you think about it in some ways But instead

of but this is so much better. Yeah, it is it

totally it totally was I mean if and the reason

why this is better than Mean Girls is because

of the fact that this is It's an updating updated

version of taming of the shrew. So it's it's

got the whole Shakespeare thing to it and I just

I don't even think Shakespeare could have made

Mean Girls a good movie. No, not at all I mean

and then you have there was also an Amanda Bynes

movie called She's the Man Where they where they

did they did the same they did the same kind

of thing where they took a shake They took a

Shakespearean play. I forget which play it was

No, sorry. Yes. It was Twelfth Night She's the

Man and they had all the same character names

exactly the same character names and the same

kind of plot but updated version and it worked

it did definitely work but in terms of you know

just how fun in terms of how funny it was I would

definitely say that they did a better job with

10 things I hate about you yeah Yeah, so much

so much better than any of those but What are

some of your favorite scenes from this movie

my favorite scenes? My favorite scene. I have

two favorite scenes is when Heath Ledger serenades

Julia Stiles with the marching band that was

just so sweet It was so sweet. I mean, you know,

you know that there's kind of like an underhanded

thing going on there He's being paid to do this.

But it was still really sweet. I mean, how many

guys do you see just go in like, you know, with

a whole marching band and everything? It was

so funny. And then there was another scene between

them where they're in a paintball field. Playing

paintball and then they like fall on top of each

other. I thought that was really cute. And I

started making out. And then of course, the one

probably most talked about scene, which I know

when girls are going through breakups they usually

post this in their Facebook status, is the 10

things I hate about you poem that she says in

front of the class to Heath Ledger after she

finds out his true intentions. And that, I have

to be completely honest, I... When I first saw

it didn't affect me as much as it affects me

now, but I will be completely honest I do tear

up every time I see her do that And we'll get

into some trivia about that scene actually a

bit later because there was some interesting

little fact about that scene Yeah, but it just

they were these scenes really stuck with me And

like I said earlier with that that whole funny

drawing penis on his face scene. I mean, but

my favorite scenes really are the ones with Julia

Stiles, just because I mean, they're funny. And

then also, of course, with Miss Perky. I mean,

obviously Miss Perky, how she became a guidance

counselor, I do not know. But yeah, I have no

idea at all. I have no clue. I mean, I don't

know where she got her. Her credentials, I don't

know who would sign off on her being able to

work with kids, you know? Very, very inappropriate

teacher, but it works for the movie. So yeah,

those are my favorite scenes from this movie.

For me, I like the Miss Perky scenes. What I

like about those scenes is somehow Kat knows,

like... She's been to the office enough times,

maybe Miss Perkey left her laptop open because

at the end of one of the scenes, Kat's like,

I'll let you get back to Reginald's quivering

member. I remember that. Oh, man. And I love

that because it's so strange and weird and everything

else. And I love how she says to Cameron, You

won't see the school being any different than

any other school that you've been to, and then

something hits her window. She flips, she pulls

the finger, she says, same old ass wipe shit

for brains everywhere. That was the best line

in the whole movie. One of the best lines. I

like when Kat's like, take ass out of sphincter,

then drive, when she nearly runs over Michael.

Oh, man. This movie is so so awesome. It's got

everything you want in a Even though it is a

teen romantic comedy type of thing It's just

got everything you would want in any just a general

romantic comedy sense and style Getting into

the cast this was I know this for a fact you

might bring up and later in trivia, but this

was Heath Ledger's very first American role at

least on film Don't know about TV, but on film.

This was his his big breakout and it's so like

That's mainly what I knew him from and then obviously

a Knight's Tale and the Patriot and Everything

else he had done and up to the point of 2008

and I was like Wait, what's Patrick Verona doing

as the Joker? What the heck? Yeah, so awesome

And Julia Stiles, she's been in a number of stuff.

She was in this. She was in Down to You. She

was in... She was actually in... She's been in

three or four different Shakespeare stuff. Obviously

this, you know, Ten Things to Do About You is

a reimagining of Taming of the Shrew. She was

in Hamlet in 2000. She was in O. in 2001 with

Makai Pfeiffer. She was in the Bourne series

for a couple of films. She was in, well she was

in Supremacy and Ultimatum. She's got a really

interesting filmography as far as that goes.

And then of course you've got Joseph Gordon -Levitt

who was Robin in The Dark Knight, oh I'm sorry,

John Blake in The Dark Knight Rises. It's so

strange to me watching this movie again and watching

Dark Knight Rises right afterwards. I have to

agree with that. Well it's strange because Joseph

Gordon -Levitt, all he's done is aged. His voice

has changed, it has deepened a little bit, but

if you watch Cameron and you watch John Blake...

Same person. Same, same character. Same person,

but it's like, and I know it's the same person,

but it seems like he didn't, he didn't do like,

like normally when, when, when men hit puberty,

either the bottom drops out or, you know, something

happens to them where it's They might sound something

like this when they're 12, and then they sound

something like this when they're 14. Yeah, exactly.

And he didn't have that happen to him, and I

absolutely love it. And then Larissa Olenek.

I haven't seen her in anything since this. There

have I. I don't even know what happened to her.

I'm looking at her filmography now. She was in

Well, the first thing she ever did was in 95

with the babysitters club and then this ten things

they hate about you She was in Born Yesterday

She's got a movie coming up this year BFFs and

next year ghosts She's mainly been on TV. She

was in psych for an episode She was in Boy Meets

World for a couple episodes. Oh, she played Dana

Prude on Boy Meets World. Okay, that's Interesting

But like past this like before this movie and

after this movie I had nuts like unless I really

recognized her I didn't see anything really like

this really wasn't like a breakout for her like

she didn't become as big as Heath Ledger or Julia

Stiles Right. No, not at all and then you've

got michael ekman david krumholtz david krumholtz

is all over the place oh man um he's in he was

in uh... an episode of uh... season four an episode

of law and order uh... most people will know

him as bernard the elf from the santa claus uh...

he's in uh... a bunch of other stuff he was in

the ER he was in How to Kill Your Neighbor's

Dog, The Mexican, Two Can Play That Game, Big

Shot Convessions of a Campus Bookie, he was in

Numbers on CBS, he was in another episode of

Law and Order SVU, he's had several, which really

make me sad though, he's had several failed television

series, The Playboy Club on NBC, lasted three

episodes two years ago. And last year he and

a bunch of other people started this comedy called

Partners, which didn't last that long on CBS.

What's interesting to me is he's gonna be, or

he is in... the first season of HBO's The Newsroom,

which he has a recurring role in that. I have

not watched all of The Newsroom yet, but he's

just an amazing actor. He's just one of those

guys. Don't just judge him by this character

from Ten Things, because he has so much range.

I agree with that 100%. I mean, look at Bernard.

Oh, yeah. One of the best characters from the

Santa Claus series. Yeah, that's so true And

then again a lot of these people in here a lot

of the the secondary people in here even though

Andrew Keegan who is Joey Donner is the main

protagonist Like I don't recognize them from

stuff other than this movie. I think it's just

I feel like maybe they did this movie And then

they moved on to other things. That's what I

feel like happens. I don't think I did. Well,

I'm looking at his filmography, and okay, he

and Julia Stiles were both in O in 2001. Okay,

so that's good. But past that, The Contract,

Pandora, Midsummer Night Rave, Perfect Opposites,

Extreme dating, cruel world, a new wave. I mean,

granted, he's been on a bunch of TV stuff, but

as far as film stuff, I don't recognize a lot

of the stuff that he's done. For TV, he's been

on Full House, he was on Baywatch. He got his

start in 1991 on Empty Nest. He was on Step by

Step, Party of Five, Seventh Heaven House. recently

as of two or three years ago he was on a couple

of the CSI shows so he's been in stuff but again

it's like I don't see him like I see some of

the other people in the cast exactly so it just

makes you think that he just you know he just

he's like one of those stars that just had you

know one memorable film and then you don't know

what the hell happened Yeah, that's kind of it.

You know I to be honest with you though. Do we

really care about what happened to Andrew Keegan?

I'm just thinking like we really care not to

do. I don't care what happened to his character,

but I mean He did act the role good, so I mean

it's not you know he his acting was well done

in that role, so And then Larry Miller everybody

and their uncle should know Larry Miller has

been everywhere nutty professor almost an angel

first film role according to wikipedia pretty

woman waiting for guffman for rich or poor chairman

of the board pros and cons and that was all this

is all stuff before ten things he was the voice

of xr on buzz lightyear star command the adventure

begins He was in a guy thing. He was in the princess

diaries Pretty much like I said anyone and it's

it's not necessarily Larry's Well, I'm not saying

he's a bad actor he isn't far from it, but most

of the time It's not necessarily his physical

appearance that people remember. It's his voice.

That's true And he also reprises the same role

in the TV series of the same name. Yeah, that

didn't last too long. No, I was so excited for

it, unfortunately. We'll talk about that a little

bit later. Let's see here. Who else in this cast?

Like I mentioned earlier, Allyson Janney, she's

in the West Wing David Leisure, Greg Jackson,

Kyle Cease, Kay Hanley Monique Powell and Brian

Mashburn, members of, okay, yeah Kay Hanley and

Michael Einstein, members of Letters to Cleo

I do like that they got the actual bands like

from the soundtrack and stuff to be in the film

I think that's pretty cool So that's interesting

there Getting into some production notes. The

opening scene was filmed at Carey Park on Queen

Anne Hill just northwest of downtown Seattle.

Exterior shots of the Prince of Photography were

filmed in Tacoma and Seattle, Washington. The

high school's exterior was shot at Tacoma's Stadium

High School. Bianca and Kat's home in the film

is in North Tacoma. So that's pretty interesting.

What kind of trivia bits do you have? I have

some cool stuff. First of all, Larissa, who plays

Bianca, and Joseph Cameron, who plays Cameron

Jones, they also date each other in Third Rock

from the Sun as their characters Tommy and Alyssa.

Just pretty interesting. Julia Stiles actually

originally auditioned for the role of Bianca.

which I find very interesting because I can't

see her as being a little prissy little stuck

-up girl. I just can't see that. I'm glad they

gave her Kat. Heath Ledger actually beat out

Josh Harnett and Ashton Kutcher for the role

of Patrick. I cannot see Ashton Kutcher doing

this role either. Yeah, JT mentioned that in

his Justifacts and I just... I'm just like, wow.

Yeah, there's like... There wouldn't be any,

like, the whole point of Patrick's character

is that he is the brooding, not necessarily a

bad boy, but the brooding outsider, the brooding

loner, and Ashton Kutcher is far from that. Josh

Hartnett just, in my opinion, can't act for crap,

so there's no way. I'm glad they gave it to you,

Ledger. Oh, yeah, me too. I mean, honestly, like,

he fits it. The next... bit of trivia, which

I mentioned earlier, the scene in which Kat reads

her famous Ten Things poem. It was actually the

first and only take according to the DVD extras.

Her tears toward the end of the poem, they were

not planned. So she got it in one take, which

is very, very unusual for scenes like that, because

usually it takes a few takes to get to get that

scene right. But she's a pretty good actor to

have done that. The school used in the film is

Stadium High School Tacoma, Washington. The school

was first built as a grand chateau -style railroad

station hotel, but after it suffered fire damage

it was renovated into a high school. The marching

band in the sequence where Heath Ledger sings

to Julia Stiles was not from Stadium High School

where the film was shot. The stadium was approached

by the makers of the movie to do the scene, but

did not have a marching band. The makers of the

movie then contacted Lincoln High School, a nearby

Tacoma school, who furnished the marching band

depicted in the scene. Several members of the

stadium band assisted, but had to be taught how

to march. The original script apparently was

much darker than the one in the final film. In

the original, Mandela, who is Kat's best friend,

she referred openly and frequently to several

suicide attempts, which were so that she could

join William Shakespeare. That I think they kind

of hinted at in the film a little bit But I'm

they hinted at that but the fact that that was

actually in the script the original script I

mean, I can understand why they took it out.

I mean promoting it'd be like almost promoting

suicide you think about it Cat Stratford Stratford

is excited. She got into Sarah Lawrence College

in Reality Larissa who played Bianca Stratford

actually did go to Sarah Lawrence College Which

is kind of funny and finally Cameron's name Cameron

James is a plan on the fame of name of a famous

director James Cameron That's all trivia for

me All right, so obviously it's on DVD you can

get it on iTunes and all that good stuff We're

gonna rank the film how we rank stuff here at

M wire is we're the IGN replacement crew One

is don't watch this even if it's free. Two is

worth a watch if it's free on TV. Three is worth

adding to the Netflix list. I don't think it's

on Netflix. It used to be. I don't think it is

now. At least here in the States. I don't know

about up there in Canada. And four is this one's

an add to your DVD collection. So what do you

rank it? One to four. It's four. Yeah, same here.

It's a four. I know because today we don't we

have more than just DVD. We have blu -ray. We

have the Apple Store We have everything like

that. So definitely it is a must to have in your

collection Yeah Most definitely All right. We're

gonna talk about the soundtrack a bit. Did you

ever get the soundtrack to this to be honest?

No, I didn't get the soundtrack to it. I Did

I loved I love this soundtrack. I don't love

every single song but Even though I'm not a big

fan of letters to Cleo Because this like if a

song is in a movie and it catches my ear I I

will want to have that soundtrack. I like that

song. I like the semi sonic song FNT I think

it's fine. New thing is what the FNT stands for

And semi sonic they were a really good 90s band

Your winter by sister hazel absolutely love that

song Even Angels Fall by Jessica Riddle. Love

that. New World by Leroy Miller. That was awesome.

Atomic Dog. Everybody knows Atomic Dog, if not

from this movie, from something else by George

Clinton. Everybody knows that. That'll be at

the end of the episode. And yeah, I mean, the

soundtrack was really, really good. It really

fit that time. A lot of the stuff in 1999, the

music industry and the movie industry kind of

really molded what came out in that year, at

least for films like this, to what that time

frame was. What I find interesting, though, that

wasn't included on the soundtrack was Barenake

and Ladies. because they're the opening song

for the beginning of the film. Yeah, that's true,

but it was probably a rights issue. It probably

was, but that's more so an interesting little

bit of side note to add for a Canadian listeners.

Yeah, and then apparently there was a scholastic

novel that was published. I need to find that.

Seriously, find it and post it on the site. oh

jeez story they published a novel of the story

in June 1999 it was written by David Leviathan

story is retold as it is in the film with each

chapter written from the point of view of either

Bianca Cameron cat Patrick or Michael so I might

actually have to track that book down and because

I think that that'll that must be an interesting

read because I've never seen a movie novelization

done that way. Each chapter is from the point

of view of a different character. I might have

to look that up on Amazon. I've seen some really

bad movies that they've made into books. It was

a movie and they turned it into the book version

of the movie. And I've seen some really bad ones.

So this sounds interesting. But it says here

that the story is retold as it is in the film.

The only difference is each chapter is written

from the point of view of a different character

So they basically like some movie novelizations

will like take It's like Game of Thrones like

each chapter is a different character Right,

but what I'm saying like like what you were just

saying about sometimes They make a movie and

then write a novel and and and do something different

in the novel versus what was what happened in

the movie I don't think that this I don't think

that this book would be that because it says

that it's written exactly as what the movie had

it as and then On October 8th 2008 ABC Family

ordered a pilot episode of a new half -hour single

-camera comedy series based on the ten things

I hate about you movie Larry Miller is the only

actor from the film to reprise his role in the

television series Well, I like Larry Miller.

I'm sorry. That was the first thing He was the

only person to return and okay What does that

say about the TV show already? Well, yeah, but

see that's the thing. It's like well, I don't

know I don't even think it's still in production

at all. I think it's dead. I think it got canceled

I think it's still on ABC spark, but that's about

it yeah it original run July 7th 2009 to May

24th 2010 so it's not in production anymore no

they're just showing reruns of it well yeah of

course they probably you know they shot 20 episodes

and of course they're gonna do reruns that's

pretty sad though yeah pretty sad um i just like

okay by by 2008 2009 i get it's well 2000 because

2009 was when it actually first aired i get it's

10 years after the fact and i get that all of

the original actors like david crum holds like

joseph gordon levitt like julia styles like heath

ledger had moved on and obviously by 2009 standards

heath had already passed away but um i get that

the other actors still living had moved on but

come on if you're gonna do a tv series at least

try to get the original actors don't like i i

don't even think i could they could have been

at like as something you know they could have

had them just even make cameos in the series

even that would have worked but the people they

picked to be the stratford sisters oh my god

i'm like are you kidding me I'm like, this is

like the remake version of the 1999 movie. You're

trying to bring back something from the 90s for

a new generation of viewers, but it did not work

because they probably had no idea what the hell

was going on, in my opinion. I mean, if they'd

never seen the movie, probably in 2009, the only

people who really know about this movie would

be people like my age and your age obviously

yeah so anybody who was born you know later than

i would say 19 obviously born later than 1999

would have no idea what the heck was going on

yeah yeah it's just so weird so all right we're

gonna take a quick ad break and we'll come back

to close the show after this hey cool picture

What's that color for? Is that to keep him from

licking his stitches? Kidding. No, because I

know you're a fan of Shakespeare. More than a

fan. We're involved. Okay. Who could refrain

that had a heart to love? And in that heart...

Courage to make love known. It's Macbeth, right?

Right. So listen, I have this friend, and he

likes your friend. What did you do to her? I

didn't do anything. She would have been too drunk

to remember. But the plan was working. What do

you care? I thought you wanted out. Yeah, well,

I did, but that was until she kissed me. Where?

In the car? Sorry. Sorry. All right. I talked

to her. I got the scoop. What'd she say? Hates

him with the fire of a thousand suns. That's

a direct quote. Thanks, Marco. That's very comforting

of you. Well, you don't know. She could need

a day to cool off. Maybe two. The Pull Bag is

not interested. Me, dying to go. Do you know

what happens at proms? Yes, Daddy. We'll dance,

we'll kiss, we'll come home. It's not quite the

crisis situation you imagine. Kissing, huh? That's

what you think happens? Got news for you. Kissing

isn't what keeps me up to my elbows in placenta

fact that you're severely unhinged? So we are

back here on MWIRE. Final thoughts on 10 Things

I Hate About You? Great film. Nostalgia just

all the way. Definitely go and watch it and rewatch

it as many times as you can because it's that

good. And if you have never heard of this movie,

don't go and look up the TV show, whatever you

do, because it's not worth it. Go and watch the

movie. Go. Find it in your local video store,

go find it on eBay or Amazon and just go and

watch it. You won't be disappointed. And rest

in peace Heath Ledger, because this movie and

Dark Knight are definitely going to be your two

legacies that you've left to the film industry.

So thank you so much for that. But yeah, just

seriously, 10 things I hate about you, best fricking

teen movie ever. Yeah the one thing I will criticize

about the film something I didn't bring up earlier

is I was Because I didn't know originally that

there were outtakes at the very end during the

end credits and It was obviously it was way before

the time of oh wait until the movie's done But

there were outtakes during the thing and I didn't

know that but When I was watching it back again

because I knew there were outtakes the one scene

that I have to really question Is how the hell

did they get letters to Cleo on the top of that

friggin school roof? Because there's no roof.

It's just the top of the school the top of the

structure It's just as a stage So they would

have they would have had to have just lowered

them in by helicopter or something because there's

no it's not a flat roof It's a it's kind of like

a castle roof that that builds up and builds

up and builds up and then flattens out so there

is no door to go into the Bottom part of the

school whatsoever. So that's I mean, that's just

a little nitpick of mine that I wanted to bring

up I was like, how the hell did the band get

up there? Yeah, that did bug me too. But I guess

I was so enthralled. I was so like Engaged and

loving the movie. I didn't really think about

that Right. Yeah. Yeah. All right. So we hope

you enjoyed this episode of N wire and we shall

join us next time and we will be I don't know

what we're gonna be doing. It's gonna be a surprise

for you listeners We're gonna have some sort

of special episodes or spotlight or something

like that. We might be looking to the sky or

Leaving tall buildings in a single bound or maybe

we'll be going you know, where no man has gone

before into the great beyond, I don't know. So

for now, I am TF2 and Mike with... Tara, the

rising star. Thank you for listening. Till next

time, keep those film reels rolling. All right,

I assume everyone has found time to complete

their poem, except for Mr. Donner, who has an

excuse. Chef, close the glasses. Anyone braving

up to read Dazzle out? I will. Lord, here we

go. I hate the way you talk to me and the way

you cut your hair. Hate the way you drive my

car. I hate it when you stare I Hate your big

dumb combat boots and the way you read my mind.

I hate you so much. It makes me sick. It even

makes me rhyme I Hate it. I hate the way you're

always right. I hate it when you lie I Hate it

when you make me laugh even worse when you make

me cry I Hate it when you're not around and the

fact that you didn't call But mostly I hate the

way I don't hate you. Not even close. Not even

a little bit. Not even at all. You messed with

the wrong guy. Now you're gonna pay. You and

that little bitch. All right, that's enough,

okay? You cross the line. What, are you kidding
