About this Episode

TFG1Mike and MovieRevolt Dan revisit the 1991 Kevin Costner action film, discussing its place among other Robin Hood adaptations, Alan Rickman's scene-stealing performance as the Sheriff, and why the film's early-90s sensibilities—from the action style to the memorable ad campaign—still hold up as a solid, fun take on the classic tale.

joining me is movie role Dan. Hello. Hello. How

are you? Good, how are you? Pretty good, pretty

good. We are continuing the 90s flashback. This

time we travel back in time to 1991 with Kevin

Costner as Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves. When

did you first see this? Actually think I'm rewatching

this. I think I realized I did see this in a

theater. It's one of the Probably one of the

first films I think I saw in the theater, but

I think as a kid I went for someone's birthday

party or something I think it was one of the

back the day the dollar 50 theaters, you know

after it's been out for a few months Yeah, I

think that's the first time I saw it and I remember

as a kid I watched this movie all the time And

I think we had the VHS and we kind of wore it

out But the first time I saw it was actually

on the big screen I remember the ad campaign

for this movie because the trailers were always

the arrow, and it was always the arrow hitting

the bullseye. I remember a lot of flaming arrows

during this time period. Yeah, that's what I'm

talking about. It was the flaming arrow hitting

the bullseye. I don't know if I saw this in theaters.

I know we rented it on VHS. Yes, kids, back in

the 90s, you had to rent films on VHS. There

was no such thing as Netflix, Hulu. HBO Go, anything

like that. You had to go to the store. Yes, you

had to actually get off your fat ass, get in

your car, drive to the store, get a movie and

take it back home. If they didn't have it, you

didn't watch it. If they didn't have it, you

didn't get it. Exactly. Exactly. Alright, so

we're gonna head it on over to JT from Saskatoon

with just the facts for Robin Hood, Prince of

Thieves. During the Third Crusade, Robin of Loxley

is imprisoned in Jerusalem along with his comrades.

After he instigates a jailbreak, he rescues a

fellow prisoner named Azim who then vows to not

leave Robin's side until he's saved his life

as well. Escaping back to England, Robin and

Azim find that Robin's father has been killed

by the evil sheriff of Nottingham after refusing

to join his cause to rule over the people with

an iron fist. Running into trouble with a few

of the sheriff's men, Robin and Azeem take refuge

in Sherwood Forest, which the locals believe

to be haunted by ghosts. The ghosts turn out

to be Little John and Will Scarlett, leader of

a band of outlaws. Will Scarlett also seems to

have some sort of grudge against Robin for an

unknown reason. Robin eventually assumes command

of the group and the Merry Men begin to fight

back against Nottingham. They ransack soldiers

and convoys that pass through the forest and

then redistribute the gold to the oppressed people.

And among the people they rob is the drunkard

Friar Tuck who soon joins the rebel cause. Maid

Marian, a long -time childhood friend of Robin,

also begins to sympathize with the band and helps

out as best she can. The sheriff is greatly angered

by the successes of Robin Hood and his men and

increases the mistreatment of the people, even

going so far as to hire Celtic warriors from

Scotland to help his efforts. The combined might

of the sheriff's forces and the Celtic Scotsmen

descend on the hidden forest hide of the merry

men decimating it. The sheriff also captures

Maid Marion and offers her a bargain. If she

marries him, he'll spare the lives of the outlaws

captured in the assault. And after she agrees,

he turns out to be an Indian giver and says on

the day they're married, they're all going to

be executed. Among the men captured is Will Scarlet,

who is released after it seems he makes a deal

to betray Robin. When he meets back up with the

remaining Merry Men who survived the attack,

Will informs him of the Sheriff's plans. However,

Will continues to be a dick to Robin, and the

Archer calls him on it. Will reveals himself

to be Robin's illegitimate half -brother, the

result of Will's mother and Robin's father hooking

up after Robin's mum dies. Though Robin is ticked

off at his father for this, he is absolutely

thrilled that he still has family, and embraces

Will as his brother. On the day of the wedding

and hangings, Robin and his merry men storm Nottingham

Castle. They free the prisoners and plan to retreat,

but Azeem's willingness to fight for them galvanizes

the locals to rise up and revolt. A fierce battle

is fought throughout the castle. Friar Tuck even

gets in on the carnage when he confronts the

corrupt bishop and tosses his less than holy

ass out a window. Robin kills the sheriff in

an epic sword fight but is attacked by Mortiana,

and he is saved by Azeem who confronts and cuts

down the witch, finally fulfilling his vow to

Robin. Professing their love for each other,

Robin and Marion are married and sure it forced

by Friar Tuck, who ends the film by breaking

the fourth wall and reminding us that we're wasting

good partying time. Opening during the early

summer of 1991, Prince of Thieves starred Kevin

Costner as Robin of Loxley, Mary Elizabeth Master

Antonio as Maid Marian, Christian Slater as Will

Scarlet, Morgan Freeman as Azim, Sean Connery

as King Richard in a cameo role, and Hans Gruber

himself, Alan Rickman, as the Evil Sheriff. The

film was directed by Kevin Reynolds, who previously

directed Costner in the film Fandango and would

later go on to direct Waterworld, so we'll try

not to hold that against him too much. Budgeted

for a hefty 48 million dollars at the time the

film went on to make 25 million in its first

weekend alone Before going on to make over 390

million dollars worldwide becoming the second

highest grossing film of 1991 right behind Terminator

2 The film received both love and hate from critics.

Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun -Times gave the

film only two and a half stars, saying the movie

was an unfocused, violent, and messy reimagining

of the classic tale. Other critics, like Peter

Canavese of Groucho Reviews, loved the film,

saying the story was familiar, the action is

rollicking fun, and the metaphorical mustache

twirling of Alan Rickman's Sheriff was priceless.

I can't help but agree on that point. As with

every other movie these days, Prince of Thieves

had a few media tie -ins. There was a licensed

video game release not just for the NES, but

for the classic Game Boy platform as well. The

movie also generated a short -lived toy line

that consisted of repainted DC superpowers figures.

Seriously, Robin of Loxley is a repaint of his

spiritual descendant Green Arrow. Check it out.

On my list of swashbuckling, ass -kicking action

movies, Prince of Thieves is up there. It's one

of my favorite takes on a childhood hero that

I never get tired of watching. And because of

how badass Costner was as Robin, I will forgive

him not speaking with an English accent, unlike

some other Robin hoods. This was Just the Facts,

Prince of Thieves. I'm JT from Saskatoon. Now,

back to TFG on mic and M -Wire. At least I generally

ignore Waterworld. I'd prefer if that film never

happened. But yeah, I can't believe this movie

made what it made. That's interesting. Yeah,

I mean, this was probably the highlight there,

the height of Kevin Costner's career. Detentions

with Wolves was 1990. This was another huge hit.

Field of Dreams was like late 80s. He had a lot

of name power. I think that's probably one of

the biggest reasons we did so well. And like

we mentioned, I mean, we still remember the ad

campaign now. So obviously it was pretty memorable

then. So I think it hit a chord with audiences

and it did amazingly well. Yeah, it did and it

was it was such a cool like for me I had seen

the old arrow Flynn movie and I had seen the

Disney version and that was my my exposure to

the Robin Hood story until this movie and I would

say for me personally while the arrow Flynn Robin

Hood is great the Disney version and this version

of my favorites I have not, outside of Men in

Tights, which I see as slightly different, it's

not a, obviously it's a comedy, it's not meant

to be serious, but I see that differently. But,

past this, I haven't watched a Robin Hood movie

since this one, outside of Men in Tights. I just,

I haven't cared to. I don't know, I just... And

I can only see Russell Crowe foobarring it up

in Tango and Cash. Or being a dumb superhero

in Sky High. Kevin Costner, man, he's had some,

like you said, he had some really, really good

roles. His entire career, I think most people

would remember him from... Bull Durham and Field

of Dreams was 89 and then Dances with Wolves

and this he was in JFK that was interesting the

bodyguard everybody remembers the bodyguard perfect

world I'm trying to remember I remember that

movie I need to go back and look at that and

see yeah I'm until 95 when he hit water world

that was Yeah, he was like he was on the top

of the world you couldn't miss and then he just

kind of he struck out over and over again like

with you know Wired Earp was kind of a disappointment.

I think tin cup Waterworld was obviously huge

At the moment one of the biggest still probably

one of the biggest flops of all time The postman

was just as you know, just as probably received

and he really I think He did 13 days, which I

actually think is a really solid movie It wasn't

very it didn't do very well, but I think it's

a really solid film And I think he's kind of

lately is kind of diverted a lot of his career

to a lot of Westerns Like he did open range.

He did the half film McCoy's he just won I think

you were kind of seeing a resurgence for him

He just won a Golden Globe for the half film

McCoy's which is actually I have not been able

to check that out But I really want to And he's

gonna be a man of steel so and Jack Ryan next

year as well So he kind of he had a really low

period there for a while, but I think he's kind

of figuring another way out of it and Which is

great because I love Costner, I think he's a

better director than he is actor I think he's

a good actor, but limited actor. He if he's put

in the right role I think I think he's could

be successful like a JFK or the untouchables

But I look like it's oh Yeah, that is the other

one. I had seen him in the untouchables. I forgot

about the end I nearly forgot about the untouchables.

Yeah, we covered that a couple episodes ago but

yeah Yeah, I mean he does yeah, I agree. He's

he's kind of made that transition that If from

actor to producer director whatever and hey,

that's that's apparently the way to go in Hollywood

as you get older. The cast in this movie is just

dynamite. Costner, Morgan Freeman, Christian

Slater, Mary Elizabeth, Master Antonio, freaking,

as JT put it, freaking Hans Gruber, Alan Rickman,

you know, a bunch of amazing, amazing people.

You even have... Can we head back to Crab Key

because you even have James Bond as King Richard

So I is this supposed to exist in the same I

guess it's a different king but uh he When I

see Sean Connery playing a king I just always

always think of a first night for some reason

yeah no King Richard and King Arthur yeah I know

that's not no I completely forgot that Morgan

Freeman was even in this movie I mean I'll be

watching it for the first time in a very long

time I was like holy crap I forgot I remembered

his character but I did not even remember it

was Morgan Freeman and at any point but He was

great. I mean, I loved I loved his character

Azim I think it was funny at the time this came

out like 1991. It's near the height of Like Ninja

Turtles was really popular this time and being

you know kid of that age I loved Ninja Turtles

and I remember watching this movie and Being

in love with Morgan Freeman's character sword

that like awesome looking, you know curved saber

I remember loving that as a kid and wanting that

for my Ninja Turtles toys because it was the

coolest sword I ever saw and just being in love

with it. It's still today, I completely forgot

about it but as I'm rewatching it I'm like, holy

crap, that sword, now I remember. It was kind

of a nice, just one of those things that you

completely forget about and then it just pops

back in your head. most people will remember

him from uh... or is it glory in 89 also in 89

who doesn't remember driving miss daisy lean

on me in 89 he's also done he was in Shawshank

Redemption in 94 Outbreak in 95 Seven in 95 he's

awesome man he's his career is like Holy crap.

He also narrates everything pretty much. He narrates.

He's got a good voice for narration. Yeah, he's

the perfect narrator. Yeah, of everyone in this

cast, he's had the best career. I mean, he's

just in so much. Even when he's in a bad movie,

I don't think I've ever seen a bad Morgan Freeman

performance. No, he's always great no matter

what he's doing. It's just they're certain. He

is like a respect unlike any other actor I think

everyone just sees him and Respects what he's

done it with his career. I mean he found fame

pretty late like he was Relatively heavily, you

know pretty old when he found like when he really

broke out with glory driving this daisy Yeah,

like that really made him into a huge star and

like you mentioned and then you're like seven

Amistad he's it's almost like you just go to

IMDB and you can just see how much he's been

in probably we know him recently of course for

all the Batman films Dark Knight is Lucius Fox

yep yeah and then and then he played Nelson Mandela

and Invictus but yeah what I like about him too

is he like Morgan Freeman, he'll play something

like Nelson Mandela, but then he'll do something

like Red, the movie with Bruce Willis. He doesn't

take himself too seriously. He'll do a serious

movie, but then he'll do something really fun,

which I think, which I appreciate. Yeah, and

then you've got Christian Slater. Now, I know

Christian Slater gets a lot of flak, but I honestly

like him in certain things that he's done. I

think the first thing I ever saw him in was 1989's

Heathers. And of course this. You know, he was

a voice in Ferngloy, The Last Rainforest. He

was in Interview with the Vampire, the Vampire

Crown. I guess that was, I don't know if that

was, I don't think that's the, that's not the

actual movie, is it? That's something else. It's

probably a Direct -to -DVD type of thing. Maybe,

let's see. No, it is the actual I don't know

why Wikipedia has it listed Interview with the

vampire the vampire Chronicles. I have no idea

why they have that listed like that. I Don't

know maybe it was a sequel no clue, you know

He was in murder in the first broken arrow he

was an easily fooled security guard in austin

powers i mean the dude is okay you know you can

say oh why did he do whatever uh you know like

why did um why did he and uh morgan friedman

do uh hard rain you know that's that's one movie

actually this is a funny story since we are talking

about christian slater i i think i've told this

story on the show before There's a grocery. I

don't I don't know if you guys have him out there

and where you where you are There's a grocery

chain here in the quote -unquote south Midwest

whatever wherever Kentucky falls called Kroger

and Number of years ago. They used to have a

video department inside the grocery store And

I worked there for a while This couple came in

and said we're looking for a movie that came

out a couple of years ago. It has Kristen Slater,

Morgan Freeman, and a lot of water. I instinctively

went to the correct section and pointed out Hard

Rain. They were like, yep, that's it. I didn't

even stop to think about it. It was just a gut.

I don't even know how I knew that. It was just

one of those gut reaction types of things. And

I have no clue, just absolutely no clue. uh...

but you know he's had a pretty prestigious career

himself and i don't think he's you know done

anything that you know is a war you know like

it's not going to get him you know uh... best

picture or best actor but i mean he does have

some really good roles yeah i mean he's i think

he's tried well think about christopher slater

i feel like he tries really hard he's just i

think he Has picked a lot of bad movies like

yeah, you know well in the dark for example one

of the worst movies ever Yeah, yeah, I mean he's

a working actor. I think he's one of those that'll

pick up He'll take a job no matter what it is

But I like to sit here. I think he he's consistent

I think you like you mentioned he just I don't

know he he he's a good actor but in a way he's

very similar to cost three is limited there's

not He's not going to give you really dynamic

performance when you hire christian slater He's

going to do a certain thing and he does that

certain thing. Well, so I think that's why he's

been able to have a I mean sustainable career

to be in a business as long as he has and still

being in movies even if they're not Huge blockbusters

is still pretty difficult thing to do. Um, yeah,

so But yeah, I don't think he's nearly I think

this is he's ever been able to Become a huge

star, but do you think he's a name? Everyone

knows they know who christian slater is Oh, you

know if he kind of sometimes is a joke, but uh,

I think it's kind of unfair I think he's just

because he was so big at one point and now he's

just kind of a TV actor type of which is kind

of losing that Negative connotation people aren't

looking down upon TV actors as they used to and

he's had some good TV series that just haven't

You know just haven't panned out. Unfortunately.

There was one a couple years ago. I absolutely

loved it There was only nine episodes of it.

It was called my own worst enemy where he plays

dual roles in the same body, multiple personalities

in the same body, and it was just, it was really,

really cool. It also had, oh man, the dude from

Yes Dear, Mike O'Malley. Michael Malley had him

in there had a really had a really good solid

cast and it was absolutely awesome But it just

MBC didn't let it run its course or didn't even

give it a chance to run its course Alright so

the overall plot of Robin Hood is The general

it's the general story of Robin Hood pretty much,

you know Robin Hood robs the rich gives to the

poor You've got the Sheriff of Nottingham in

there, the whole made Marion thing. What did

you think of this rendition of Robin Hood? I

enjoyed this rendition of Robin Hood. I think

it's a good movie. I don't think it's great.

I think with a lot of Kevin Costner films, it

suffers from being kind of overloaded at times.

It could be about 30 minutes shorter and it would

be probably a tighter film. But overall, I think

it's a really solid film. It's good action like

you mentioned a great cast it It sticks to the

story of Robin Hood, but does some interesting

things with it I think one person think we didn't

mention yet was out Rickman We kind of touched

on him, but I think he to me is what makes the

movie like he is. Oh, yeah He needs to go into

like the movie villain Hall of Fame because he's

the perfect villain he brings so much life and

I'd love everything he does in this he's he's

he's so great just with his facial expressions

He can show you complete disgust without saying

a word and still and then he could be kind of

funny but then he can turn it and become completely

like maniacal and Evil at the same time. But

yeah, I think so. I think that him alone I think

makes makes this a worthy watch But what were

your impressions of the movie? I I like the movie

I At first I thought somehow, I don't know how

I thought this, when I watched it again I thought,

and I remember thinking this as a kid too when

I saw it, and as I know I've said this on this

podcast many times, my mom pretty much let me

watch anything as a kid, so as an 11 year old

in 1991, this is a no brainer for me to watch

it. I thought then, and I thought now when I

watched it back, I thought that Will Scarlett

was going to end up being his son somehow? I

mean, I knew in the back of my mind, okay, it's

going to turn out to be his brother or, you know,

whatever it is. But, um, I don't know, for just

some odd reason, I thought it was going to be,

I just thought it was going to be a son at some

point. But yeah, I mean, Alan Rickman makes the

movie. He really does the, I mean, the two of

them. I mean, really, you know, no disrespect

to the rest of the cast. But if you just had

Kevin Costner versus Alan Rickman as Robin Hood

and the sheriff, it would be great. I mean, it

would, you know, it would be as great as it is

in the film. But Alan Rickman really steals the

show. Yeah. What what did you think? And this

is kind of this is still kind of, I guess, not

a controversy, but it's something people often

bring up when they talk about this movie and

the fact that it's Kevin Costner as Robin Hood.

And he obviously is not Giving British doing

a British accent. How do you how do you feel

about that? I I didn't care. I Don't know. I

I just Yeah, I don't think it's a huge deal I

Think the issue is here's the thing. It's if

Kevin Costner is gonna do it if you can do a

good British British accent and fine I have a

feeling he probably can't and it would probably

be bad so if I think It's kind of it is what

it is. It's like Arnold Schwarzenegger when he's

in a movie and He's an Austrian accent and no

one really even says anything about it But just

like yeah, just big huge guy with an Austrian

accent and we're just gonna act like he's just

this normal human being I think it's similar

to that. It's just it's obvious. I mean you see

that a lot especially in movies when it's like

you have an American film that's taking place

in a foreign country or we're taking or something

like that and how the No one really like christian

slater didn't have any english accent. There

wasn't many people that did it was kind of I

think the only person that did was probably alan

rickman, um, you know for obvious reasons, but

uh, I don't think it's a huge deal I think it's

just it's probably brought up the most because

of the joke and uh, Men men with men that were

tied to whatever but uh men. Yeah, yeah men men

and tights. Yeah The thing about it is though

Would you want a movie where the actor says i'm

sorry i just can't get this accent down you need

to replace my footage in this one prison scene

or whatever you know oh wait sorry mr lazy b

um because as soon as you said that that's the

first thing i went to was like well at least

they didn't replace kevin cosner's footage yeah

they didn't dub his voice Yeah, that would've

been pretty bad with... Yeah, that would've been

very bad. No, I don't... Because I don't think

it really matters to me that much because it's

freaking Kevin Costner in his prime years as

an actor. And second of all, you've got Alan

Rickman with the accent and you've got King Richard

with the accent. So, I mean... Plus, this is

a movie that doesn't present itself as a serious

take. I think it kind of... It's known that this

is gonna be... It's an action movie that's using

the Robin Hood story And so I think when it comes

to those minute details, it's it's pretty fast

and loose with the historical accuracy So it

I think there is a lot of things you can pick

apart So I don't think it's a really big deal

But I think it's something when you talk about

the movie that that obviously is gonna come up

Yeah, if anybody I I'm probably remembering this

wrong. I'm not remembering it at all really if

anybody that really enjoys this movie that doesn't

already have it on DVD go seek out the two disc

special edition I think it's you can still find

it on Amazon for fairly cheap because I believe

that has a commentary track with Kevin Costner

and the director and I think they state in that

why he didn't do the accent you know like I said

to me it doesn't Doesn't really bother me all

that much How did you feel about the action in

the film and how I thought it was great Yeah,

what I found interesting about this movie when

it comes to the period pieces Typically when

you watch a movie like like this or anything

that's taking place in a pastime Usually they

usually hold up really well. They don't feel

all the time because they're not you know, they're

not required to follow the tropes of what's going

on at that time. But watching this, this does

feel very much like a movie from the early 90s,

late 80s, just in the way the action is shot.

They seem to try to put in as many explosions

as they possibly can, finding excuses to blow

things up, even though it's before really gunpowder

was used in Great Force. And it does feel like

a very movie of its time, even though it's taking

place such a long time ago. But it's fun, like

I mentioned. It presents itself immediately.

You know what it is. The action is kind of...

It's a fun yet serious take on it. It's not...

It's kind of like... Oh god, I can't believe

I'm making this comparison. It's kind of like

the original Romeo and Juliet versus the Claire

Danes version. you know there's so many differences

between the two you see what i'm saying so it's

like that's the same thing with i'm sure the

other versions of robin hood the later versions

past men in tights uh... like the russell crowe

version or i don't know there's like a couple

years ago it was like Two or three different

Robin Hood movies that came out. I can't keep

track of them all I think if you look at it if

you'd like to probably the ones that are most

famous or they're this You know the Avengers

of Robin Hood there Aaron Aaron Flynn film from

the 1930s and probably the Russell Crowe Ridley

Scott film that came out I 2000 I forget the

exact year but a few years ago. I think this

one would if you look at the tone this one falls

like in the middle the Errol Flynn is very flamboyant

very Whimsical and it's that's one not serious

at all. It's really kind of It that one's it

is all fun. I think it ever takes itself too

seriously Robin Hood Done by Ridley Scott is

completely serious. I don't think there's like

one laugh in that movie I don't think there's

much of anything in that movie But I think this

falls right in between I think it kind of takes

a little bit from both Yeah Yeah, yeah, I would

have to agree. So we are Gonna head to a quick

ad break and we'll come back to close the show

Prince of Thieves? It's a movie I enjoy. I don't

think it's great by any means. I don't think

it's a good watch. I would say it's a good movie,

not great. Like I mentioned, certain things don't

hold up very well, mostly with the action beats.

and you want to watch a Robin Hood film I think

this is probably a good one to go go for because

it has a little bit of everything At least this

one's At least this version's oh god, what's
