Movie Week in Review
Star Wars Prequel Trilogy Review

About this Episode
You're listening to the decaf radio network of
podcast No, that's not order 66. That's a different
order. Hello, and welcome to part two of episode
75 of MWIRE, brought to you by the GeekCaster
network. I am your host, Steve Joe and Mike,
and joining me is Steve Megatron, hello. Hello.
Kevin Thompson, hello. Good day to you. And Mike
Birdman Dodd, hello. I haven't slept in 36 hours.
Like I keep telling you, I've told you since
I freakin' started talking to you, fucking delegate.
Nobody can play Call of Duty Black Ops but me,
nobody! Okay, well I was talking about your other
responsibilities. Call of Duty? That is the only
responsibility at this point. Buy this goddamn
game, I'm off in a week, it's okay. Uh, yeah,
so part two of the Star Wars saga here on MWIRE
is going to be dealing with the prequels. Yeah!
Sorry, I really like these movies, actually.
I was gonna say, I'm very interested to hear
everybody's opinions on every one of these movies.
I am too, actually. Um, so, uh, did - has everyone
seen these in theaters, I would assume? Oh yeah,
I was there actually every - I actually skipped
a day of grade 12 to see episode 1, and my teacher
said, you know what Mike, it's okay, only if
you save me a spot. Everybody I know skipped
whatever they had to make sure they saw it opening
day. My stepdad pre -ordered tickets for all
of us. I was in line at 5 a .m. I don't remember
if it was episode one or episode two but one
of them we were outside wrapped around the theater
waiting for it to open everybody not everybody
but most people were in some type of costume
and it was pouring down rain yep yeah I think
it was episode one and that was quite the scene
it was either episode one or episode two although
if it was episode two then you must have been
on Kamino no When I saw episode one, we totally
went uber nerd. We were in costume. We were playing
the Star Wars role -playing game, which at that
time was done by West End Games. We ordered pizza
delivered to us in line. We had frigging our
Game Boys playing Star Wars. We had lightsaber
battles. We had like a Nerf gun fight. It was
the most epic afternoon, not to be talked by
episode three, but I'll talk about that later.
That was pretty frigging epic. We had members
of the 501st up in Owen Sound. It was ridiculous.
Yeah, I remember seeing this in theaters as well.
I think I actually I don't think I went opening
day, but I went like like the Saturday after
it opened. Maybe this was this was when I got
all my cool stuff from Target, too, because as
the movies were coming out, obviously we were
getting all kinds of different toy displays.
And this is when I yanked a bunch of different
cardboard cutouts and graphics and stuff like
that. Right now now did anybody opening day by
the commemorative booklet that was available?
During the during that particular weekend no
we didn't have to buy them at our place I don't
think oh you fucking suck cuz ours was like yeah,
it's $15 like are you out of your fucking mind?
No, they handed them out to us, and are you talking
about the ones for episode one? Yeah, yeah, I
mean yeah, they wanted them out You suck. The
only thing we ever got for free was when we saw
the return of the Jedi Special Edition, they
gave us a Power of the Force 2 Luke in the Jedi
thing, which I very foolishly opened, which then
I found out how much it was worth, and I'm still
kicking myself in the ass today. Everybody's
having ass problems today. I know, clearly. Oh,
Arby's. Shut up. So yeah, so I guess we do we
want to do any more general talk on the prequels
before we actually get into the film discussion?
No, that's good small. It's fucking harsh Yeah,
yeah, he was fucking harsh in this and then he
went to play fucking toad Yep, let's not go in
there and heroes to come on. I mean we all know
what else fuck heroes I hate that show. That's
because you have no taste, Mike. Well, neither
do you, Mike. So anyways, we're going to go to
the trailer for the Phantom Menace. You refer
to the prophecy of the one who will bring balance
to the Force. You believe it's this boy? He can
see things before they happen. He can help you.
The Force is unusually strong with him. He was
meant to help you. Anakin! Tell him to take off!
Will I ever see you again? What does he want
to tell you? Are you sure about this? Trusting
our fate to a boy we hardly know? Anakin Skywalker,
meet Obi -Wan Kenobi. I sense much fear in you.
The boy is dangerous. They all sense it. Why
can't you? Fear is the path to the dark side.
Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate
leads to suffering. First up in the prequel trilogy
is episode one the phantom menace Clearly the
I think this is the movie that I've had the most
excitement for in my entire life I was more pumped
up for this movie than any movie ever There's
something really wrong with you. No, no, I'm
serious because I was the biggest Star Wars fan
I had never had a Star Wars release during my
lifetime that was brand new and For this to be
coming and knowing that there was gonna be two
more after it I was so excited that it was you
know, I can't even describe it. Yes I was excited
for the second and third one too, but this was
what you know kind of started at all This is
what got me back into Star Wars like hardcore
like this is when I was still reading the Expanded
Universe novels when I was still kind of collecting
the toys But I don't know this is I was excited
for this I was more excited for episode 3 though,
but this movie I was glad I think I saw it in
theater three times I think and I find this movie
a lot of people give it Flacker being the worst
of the prequels, but I would argue it gets better
with age and there are different fan cuts of
this movie like if you just type in phantom fan
or Phantom Menace fan cut you'll find trailers
or they completely change Like dialogue they
completely change what Jar Jar says so now what
he says is subtitled It makes it about ten times
better because now Jar Jar isn't a huge racial
stereotype. Well, he is but I digress I don't
know. It's just I like this movie more now than
when I was a kid Yeah, I'm not really talking
about whether I like it or not like it or whatever
I'm just saying that the initial hype and excitement
for Star Wars coming back to the theater was
has been unrivaled for me I thought Darth Maul
was also the greatest marketing tool they've
ever had. Yeah, that was pretty cool. What about
you, Steve? I would say that I definitely liked
it. I don't know, I just... Well, don't sound
so enthused, Steve. Well, not so much. But going
into it, Steve, before you had ever seen it,
were you excited to go to the theater and watch
it the first time, or had you already heard enough
about it that you kind of knew what to expect?
for episode one. I'd already seen the other three,
the original trilogy. Probably, I don't know,
50 times. My brother would watch only that. I
was excited about it, except for the fact that
when I was in the theater, I had some more in
front of me trying to hum the theme song and
they were all drunk. Like their whole party so
I Had hot bitches on my left and my teacher to
my right. I was okay That's a weird combination.
They're right. Like hey, mr. Bade check out this
hot piece of ass I was single at this point.
So it was okay one thing we need to comment on
really is that this is Lucas's first Entry as
a film director in 22 years Yeah, like like when
this got released it had been 22 years since
since the original trilogy. Oh Can you direct
some episodes of young Indiana Jones though?
Well, it says it says here Lucas's first product
is a film director after 22 years. So young Indiana
Jones I think that was a TV series wasn't it?
Yeah. Yeah, so And I'm thankful that he hasn't
directed a whole lot Really, what else can you
do than torture his own franchise? Well, if you
think about it, the only things he's done is
Star Wars and Indiana Jones. And American Graffiti
and THX. Yeah, but pretty much that's about the
only two that he's got going for him that he
keeps going back to. That's true. You don't see
too many prequels and sequels to American Graffiti.
Well, that's kind of a standalone piece. Yeah.
If he can find a way to sequelize it, don't worry.
Well, they did that with Tron, but the Tron,
anyway, that's a whole other topic. No, he's
great with the ideas, he's great with the coming
up with stuff and the writing and stuff like
that. I just, for some reason, don't think he's
that great of a director. So, Kevin, why don't
you summarize episode one for us? No, you don't
want me to summarize episode one. Yeah, we do.
You don't want me to either trust me. I think
you should Mike No, no Oh God have mercy on our
souls Basically there's a to get into it there's
a Dispute between the Trade Federation and the
planet of Naboo I'm gonna skip a whole lot of
shit during this so just bear with me uh... those
version kevin colesna but the and and basically
that the jet air brought into it to don't check
what's going on that you know they have uh...
the traces uh... good lord i hate this movie
i'm sorry it's somebody else and have to do is
come to some of the circus in the entire time
also sounds like a lay on the scooby -doo episode
but anyways Bad shit happens! They send in the
Jedi to negotiate! More bad shit happens! We
meet Jar Jar, the worst film character ever.
I would argue that. There are far more annoying
characters. He's just the most visible. Freddy
from Scooby -Doo, I'm looking at you. I don't
know, the basic gist of this movie is Naboo has
been invaded, the Trade Federation claims they
have legal right to do so, and this movie more
or less boils down to politics. I mean, you see
the rise of Senator Palpatine to get Chancellor
Valorum out, and Chancellor Valorum, aka Terrence
Stamps of fucking Zod, controls the universe.
The only reason why I did not know that before
about two weeks ago was because... Uh, Valorum
is in like, maybe less than five minutes of this
film. And I just didn't pay attention to his
character at all. And then Palpatine house him.
Yeah, he's like, yeah, this guy's a pussy, I'm
better, I have... I'm cooler than this guy elect
me, so U .S. politics in space. Or Canadian politics
in space. Oh, we're way more boring than this,
Mike. Just saying. Giving him too much credit.
Yeah, exactly. Kevin, pick up the ball, buddy,
and let's just run with this so we can get through
it. Basically, you don't need to know the details,
but the two Jedi here, Qui -Gon and Obi -Wan,
they end up at Tatooine. They meet Anakin. Bring
him back, take him away from his mother and his
home planet to try to train him to be a Jedi
or to get him at least approved by the Jedi Council
so that they can train him. Fast forward, we
all end up back on Naboo with Qui -Gon and Obi
-Wan and the Queen and all her people and Jar
Jar and... uh... boss mass against the uh...
called the uh... battle droids darth maul and
and all those guys we have basically three different
things happening at once we have anakin on flying
up to try to uh... destroy the arm control ship
the control ship out in space that's the one
story that's going on at the end then you have
the uh... the queen and arm or i mean the jet
and darth maul fighting in the in the uh... temple
area where we want to call it and then you have
the main outside battle between jar jar boss
mass the gun guns and the uh... the droids And
that's all going on at the same time. Eventually
Anakin, with his mastery of flying, destroys
the control center, which puts all the droids
to sleep. So the captured Gungans are free. And
then you have the epic battle between Obi -Wan
Qui -Gon and Darth Maul, which ends up with Darth
Maul split in half. It also ends up with Qui
-Gon dead as well. Well yeah, but that didn't
hurt me as much as Darth Maul being cut in half.
And then you have your of course your your ending
scene, which is obviously the celebration scene
with everybody happy that yeah they destroyed
the the threat for now so Mike initial thoughts
See it's weird this movie. It's all over the
it's all over the place in terms of pacing I
find this movie to almost be the most boring
of the prequel, I don't know, it seems to take
its friggin' time and places, it just unnecessarily
drags on. Plus, the thing that makes me mad the
most about this movie is it explains the force.
This should never have been explained. You're
telling me the force is controlled by little
microscopic organisms called midi -chlorians.
That is such bullshit. It takes away all the
mysticism. Yeah, it takes away all the mysticism,
it takes away all the symbolism, all the context
of the force by doing everything else. With a
bunch of people that are very knowledgeable about
the Star Wars, the original trilogy, to sit down
in the first movie and have them start throwing
around jargon that has never been used before,
like the midi -chlorians and stuff like that,
everyone's like, what the flying fuck are they
talking? I mean, you can follow them, but it's
like, what? This doesn't exist. Yeah, and, you
know, just the fact that the Empire rose from
such a group of frankly stupid people really
blows my mind. And the fact that nobody picked
up on the fact that Palpatine was kind of a douchebag
from the get -go. Right. I don't know. I mean,
like I said, there are too many questions in
this. It demystified the universe. I think it
gave us too much. in terms of explaining backstory.
I think that's where episode one failed a lot
of the fans. Now, not the same, there weren't
some really good performances in this, because
Liam Neeson as Obi -Wan's master was really cool.
I love Qui -Gon. I was so sad when they killed
him off so quickly. uh... a young obi -wan i
thought was fantastic yes i have two main problems
with this one number one is that it was too kid
-friendly too kid -friendly to me it was a toy
commercial yeah and number two was it out of
the six movies this one felt the least like a
star wars movie to me meaning it didn't have
that that i don't know it's hard to explain but
it just didn't have that atmosphere and like
i said i think it is Yeah, it didn't have that
epicness and I think you had to like Mike said
it had to do with the the timing and the the
the speed of different things at different times
and it just didn't flow together like it didn't
feel like that like Lucas always says that old
You know 1930s You know cereal cereal Saturday
cereal type thing. It didn't have that feel all
the other ones do this one did not Now the one
thing I want to bring up about this and yes,
we are talking about these films in both parts
of episode 75 here You know in you know theatrical
release order, you know I know that there's a
lot of controversy about Lucas going back and
saying oh Well, you have to watch them in episode
order now that they're all out and everything
else and honestly it does if you didn't see them
originally The prequel trilogy if you didn't
see them before like say the DVDs came out or
whatever If you watch them from episode 1 to
episode 6, it makes sense, but I will agree that
having released prequels and then going back
and explaining stuff, it's kind of freaky and
it's kind of weird and it probably shouldn't
have been done, but since apparently Lucas was
wanting to make it the six serial film Saturday
matinee thing where everything connected, Episode
1, as a stand -alone film, as an introduction
to Star Wars even though it wasn't our introduction
to it, I think it does an okay job. There are
certain things about this film that I absolutely
cannot stand and there are certain things that
make me fall out of my chair laughing. Jar Jar,
he's a comedy character. He's a poor comedy character.
And there shouldn't ever be a poor comedy character.
The only thing I really laughed at with the Gungans
was when Boss Nass told Jar Jar that he was going
to make him a general and Jar Jar just faints.
I thought that was kind of cool. I don't know.
This is probably my least favorite out of all
six films. Outside of the battle with Darth Maul,
that's really my only... If you take Darth Maul
out of this movie, good lord. Yeah. This movie
was a train wreck from the get -go. Well, number
one, to be fair, and I'm not saying that I necessarily
love this movie, but to be fair, like I said,
there was so much hype going into this that it
was almost going to be impossible for it to live
up to it. Especially going off of those ones
that had been decades earlier and now dealing
with something that's going to look... First
of all, it's going to look completely different,
which is a good thing. The effects are going
to be completely different. From a visual standpoint,
it's going to be way advanced. And at the same
time, you're going back in time. So there's kind
of a disconnect there already. But the hype going
into it, it was going to be hard for it to live
up to it. And I think the only good thing about
episode one, or one of the best things about
episode one is that they learned what to do and
what not to do for episode two and episode three.
I think one of the things they did with episode
one is because looking at the production design
of this movie, they kind of shot themselves in
the foot. Look at how new and shiny everything
is. And I know under the imperial regime, things
are going to change. Not that drastically in
20 years. Not across all sectors in space. But
they got rusty and old. Really fast, I guess.
I don't know. That's one thing that really bothered
me. It didn't seem consistent. I didn't like
that everything looked more technologically advanced
than it does in the future. It looked more like
Star Trek as opposed to Star Wars, and that's
a thing that has to be acknowledged, though,
because it doesn't fit in -universe. People are
going to say, well, that's because it was before
all these great big battles, and that's why everything's
more... You run down, but I agree with you. Yeah,
and one of the things is here's something I think
I'm right on this I'm not a hundred percent sure
on this one But the Falcon is a really old ship
this Falcon would have been built Around this
time because it had because it's had several
different owners. I think the Falcons at least
40 50 years old so it should look like the current
tech when you look at it in the future. Now unless
Han Solo ripped all the guts out of it, which
he likely did, it's not very consistent with
the design of the rest of the universe. And I
don't know, there's just, there's a lot of problems
there. Now one thing I do love about episode
one, is the music for this movie. Fantastic score.
Probably one of the best out of the series overall.
I mean, Duel of the Fates has been spoofed by
so many people to show this epic big battle scene.
And I remember when episode one came out, there
were so many parodies of this thing. And it reignited
the love for Star Wars in a way that had never
been seen since the original ones. But you're
right though, Kevin, 20 years of hype, 25 years
of hype is a lot to live up to. And it's kind
of like when the Simpsons movie came out. Everyone
was like, oh my god, it's going to be awesome.
We saw it and we're like, eh. It's impossible
to live up to that much expectation. I think
you bring up a good point, though. I think the
music is probably the most consistent thing throughout
the six films. Yeah, it is. As far as quality
and as far as, you know, just the way that it's
done. But yeah, this one, I do remember more
actual themes and more pieces of music from this
one than probably any of the other ones. The
Dual of Fates is ridiculous. There's also the
like I'm gonna pod racing scene plus when they
introduce Anakin Just listen to it. You can hear
slight undertones of the Imperial March, which
is really cool Plus this thing had a fantastic
ad campaign. This thing is fucking everywhere
make oh, yeah get you could get like fucking
phantom menace tampons for christ's sake i remember
getting all of the uh the pizza hut or taco bell
or whoever had it the uh the big cups the big
cups with the the figure on the top with the
straw coming out of them they had like you know
how you got um i think that was taco bell Taco
Bell, yeah the extra large plastic cup but instead
it was a Star Wars cup and then on the top it
had Subalba or Watto or Darth Maul or like a
complete sculpted head and everything and I had
all of them I was I was It had to go from like
Taco Bell to Taco Bell to try to find a way to
get all of them. I had all the Pepsi and Mountain
Dew cans. I had these up until about probably
five years ago. And that was such a challenge.
I remember Doritos had a Star Wars promotion.
I remember, like I said, Mountain Dew. I think
even Burger King had toys, I'm pretty sure. Yeah,
everybody had something. Yeah, I mean this was
a this was a multimedia juggernaut and I remember
reading online very early at the time people
were going to see movies that had the episode
one trailer see it and walk out and this is before
broadband was widely available. So this was This
was a big deal. So something I've never heard
of before this someone going to a theater just
to see the preview and walking out I did I'm
one of those people but I mean no no I mean I'd
never heard of it before but I mean I did hear
about it when that when this happened I remember
you know the the word spreading as far as which
movies would have the trailers and which movies
were gonna have that you know like a second version
of the trailer and people go in and just watching
that and I was like this is intense this is insane
I don't know did they now did they just show
the theatrical trailer or did they show a teaser
at some point because there is a teaser I thought
they showed multiple different. Okay, I was going
to say because I watched the teaser trailer on
the DVD and I'm thinking, wow, you just blew
your whole wad in the teaser. It's like, holy
crap, it shows not everything, but it shows a
good amount of it. I kind of figured, you know,
for me, for teasers, and this kind of comes off
of a certain 2007 giant robot film, for me, a
teaser just has to tease me. It doesn't have
to be a whole trailer. The problem is, though,
is filmmaking has changed a lot since Lucas made
these movies. I mean, if you compare trailers
from the 60s to the 70s to the 80s to the 90s
to the 2000s, you see a different progression
of how things are cut way back when. Like I said,
it's a different style of filmmaking. So when
you come into stuff like this, everybody is the
MTV generation. So you have to get the fast cuts,
show as much of it as you can, because the company
wants know it's going to make its money back.
So when you show everything like, oh man, that
looks cool. I got to see that. Think about movies
in the 80s and how those trailers looked. They
got you more interested in thinking, hmm, that
looks like a good movie. Maybe I want to see
that. I mean, look at teaser trailers for aliens.
It's a very good example. It tells you nothing.
It just says it just shows alien and them talking
and then it flashes aliens the trailer ends Star
Wars episode one teaser trailer Everything and
then you hear the fucking Darth Vader breathing
You know what I mean? It gives away too much
because they want you in the theater. They don't
want you to pass this up Right. Yeah, what about
you Steve? What are you? What are your initial
thoughts on episode one? To begin with fuck this
movie Anyways, to begin with, I thought that
episode one was kind of confusing because I'm
like, okay, who the hell are these people? At
the very beginning, although it did start off
on a nice action point. And granted, the special
effects did look a hell of a lot better than
the previous trilogy, which kind of, you know,
is a little bit, I don't know, offsetting. I
was not impressed with the whole Gungan thing.
I was one of the major haters of it. Jar Jar
Binks was the most annoying fucking character
that they could have ever come up with to basically
replace Chewbacca. Wow, that's really insulting
to Chewie. Well, Chewie was a hell of a lot better.
He was a fucking warrior and he went brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
it's like shut your pie hole you stupid looking
duck and Fucking duck man. They should have just
ate him use the force and cooked him but um Lightsabered
his head off and I would have stopped that whole
problem right there, but tell me how you really
feel Steve come on I will he should he should
have been on the receiving end of something Mike
talked about earlier, but anyways bad. Sorry.
Oh my god. Misa say it's icky. But anyways, yeah,
I just, I fucking hate that character. And then
the other half of the movie is spent trying to
figure out who this Anakin kid is, which for
most people pretty much realize who he is later.
You know, if they've seen the previous trilogy.
But most of the episodes was spent doing which
inspired the game, which granted the game is
cool, but they dragged the fucking race on for
so long. Yeah, I like that scene. It's like a
15 minute sequence, isn't it? Yeah, I like that
scene. They dragged it on so long that it gets
boring and Subulba's annoying and then you got
the freaking junkyard guy that owns it. Watto.
Yeah, Watto. And he's freaking annoying as hell
too. Don't know it's just too many damn CG Well
it gets to a point where every character besides
the Jedi and the Sith seem like they were created
for kids only Oh, yeah, and you know what the
sad thing is he got the inspiration from his
goddamn kid Which proves he wrote this thing
over a fucking weekend Yeah, his kid just starts
mumbling random or mumbo jumbo, and he's like
that's a good idea for the the new race of aliens
Because it's bad as avatar having unobtainium
Anyway, but you know it kind of goes into the
fact that he says and he's very kind of cryptic
with some of the things he says which kind of
weird but but some of the things he says I mean
he says when he wrote the original one in set
in the 70s that he did do some Backstories obviously
and wrote down some of the backstories for some
of the characters He didn't obviously write episode
one two and three back in the 70s So if you think
he did you're out of your freaking mind But even
when he was writing down some of these backstories
these are characters that he never came up with
until the 90s You know, Jar Jar Binks, Watto,
and Cebova were never a figment in his imagination
in the 70s. I would stake my life on it. Yeah.
Well, he even said in some kind of an interview
somewhere that he got the idea from his kids.
Right or whatever and that's the end and see
that this is the problem the stuff that he I
bet you the stuff that he came up With and the
stuff that he had wrote down back in the 70s
or even in the 80s as these Movies were coming
out and he was thinking, you know Oh, I want
to progress this a little bit and write some
stuff down that stuff. I'm guessing probably
was great It's the stuff that he came some of
the stuff he came up with Afterwards when he
was trying to gear this to a new generation and
get kids Watching it without realizing the fact
that when he did the original movies kids liked
it He didn't gear it towards kids, but kids liked
it. So why do you have to do that now? Kids are
going to like it if you just put out some good
shit. It seems like he dumbed it down too damn
much though. It was mostly to make a quick buck
to sell the toys so that he could re -release
the original trilogy in better quality and then
have the budget for the following films, which
they made such a shit ton of these toys that...
None of them are worth anything. I mean they're
all just shit. I mean I and they had the little
force chips and everything else but I mean Granted
I mean they they did do a lot of backstory for
like Palpatine Anakin, you know Obi -Wan Yoda
and the like but there were a lot of Bullshit
unneeded characters and everything's dumb. If
you look at it the battle droids are retarded
Now, I understand why and he kind of explains
that in the commentary a little bit about how
they're supposed to be basically early prototype
things that they were working on to try to get
them better and they eventually go with, you
know, create clones and etc that are better.
So these droids are supposed to be kind of like
these bad first versions, but they're dumb. The
Gungans are dumb. Anakin's retarded in the beginning
at times. Which unfortunately left a... bad taste
in the actor's mouth to the point that everybody
hated him personally for the role when it was
Lucas's fault. Yeah, and that's what I'm saying,
just every single character seemed like they
had a dumbed down personality outside of, like
I said before, the adult Jedi, the adult Sith,
and to a point, you know, obviously the droids,
the other droids, besides the battle droids,
like the ones we're used to, R2 and C -3PO and
stuff, are always kind of had that comedic thing,
but he didn't even dumb them down. like he did
everybody else. All these new characters seem
to be, I don't know. Well, I mean, even, you
know, the Senate and everybody else, they made
them dumber than hell because where the hell
would you put a guy that's, you know, purposely
creating propaganda, you know, oh, oh yeah, no
problem, no vote. We'll just put you in charge.
You know, they put Palpatine in charge, which
is right where he wanted to be. And then they
make Obi -Wan dumber than a box of rocks. I think
one of the big problems of this is looking at
the actual storyline of episode one, looking
about how everything started over a trade dispute,
over taxation. That's very political. You went
very political with it. It could have been an
assassination. Yeah, or like a scandal. Maybe
like members of the Senate were taken out, they've
been implicated. Yeah, like you said, maybe there's
like an assassination, prove this person's innocence,
or maybe there's... Corruption and there's like
an outright coup or something like that. Just
not fucking taxation and trade You know, this
is not c -span and fucking space This is the
American Revolution in space Wow I actually really
like the little battle droids. I thought they
were cool because they're funny characters because
when they kill them they're funny but i think
i think the problem is that if that is your only
dumb dumb character comic relief is the battle
droids that's fine because you have the destroyer
droids who are more intense you have the jet
i with their lightsaber battles which is intense
you know you have all this other stuff and you
can deal with some of the characters being younger
and more immature versions it's when you'd add
not only the battle droids but then the Gungans
and this on top of this on top of this where
everybody's dumb is the problem. And then you
get the two green guys from the Trade Federation,
which has been a pain in the ass for the first
three films of the prequel. Yeah, and that's
something else too. I'm trying to think of their
names. One of them is named Lot Dodd. Yeah, there's
a new generation in Lot Dodd. They're supposed
to be, actually it's funny, in the Expanded Universe,
they actually describe the battle droids look
like these guys when they're dead. That's why
the battle droids are supposed to be so terrifying
because they look like nemoidian skeletons. They
look fucking retarded and that's something else
too. There was never any threat outside of the
droidekas and even then force push dead. Even
Darth Maul to a limited extent was kind of neutered
because he could have taken out those guys anytime
he wanted to. Yeah. I mean, let's look at the
last scene, for example. He fucking stands on
top, gloating over Obi -Wan. Why don't you just
poke him with the dual lightsaber in the face?
Oh, dead. It's a wrestling move. It's a wrestling
move. He had to pose. And of course, posing in
wrestling gives your opponent a chance to get
up and kick your ass. Yeah, so it was a quick
time event that mall failed. Well, it's like
the gloating event of Optimus Prime and Megatron.
Megatron gloats. Prime busts his ass. Well, I
mean, it's classic. It's not that we haven't
seen this in every freaking cartoon we've ever
watched as a kid. The bad guy's not allowed to
kill the good guy, so he has to gloat until the
good guy can get out of it. I mean, it's not
like it's something new. I think they could have
pulled it off a little bit better and not had
him stand there for 20 seconds after Obi -Wan
had jumped over him and just waiting for himself
to get killed, but that's another thing. So let's
get into the casting here. Mike, who was your
favorite character in this? I really liked Ewan
McGregor as Obi -Wan. I thought... He added just
the right amount of personality into the role.
I loved Liam Neeson I really wish he'd gotten
a lot more screen time Jake Lloyd wasn't a bad
kid actor. Actually. I thought he's done fantastic.
You should see what he looks like nowadays. Oh
my god It's a drastic change. Yeah, like I seen
this kid at a Star Wars con a couple of years
ago Yeah, you were who in what? Yeah Other than
the, um... Jimmy Smits, was he in this as Bail
Organa? No, that's episode three. Okay, yeah.
I'm trying to think who else was in this. Um...
Natalie Portman as Padme or Queen Amidala. Uh...
She wasn't bad, I thought. I just thought she
got a lot of really wussy lines. Yeah. Well,
that was what he wanted. She wasn't well -developed,
and this is supposed to be the future mother
of the rebellion? What the fuck? Ray Park as
Darth Maul was awesome. Oh yeah. You had Ian
McDermott and Samuel L. Jackson. Oh yeah, Samuel
L. Jackson was still cool as hell. I would have
to say, and this will come in later, but I'd
have to say overall, outside of some of the more
classic characters, I think Mace Window is my
favorite out of the prequels. For me, not in
this movie. I don't know, in this movie, I'm
like Mike, I really liked Ewan McGregor as Obi
-Wan. I'm a huge Liam Neeson fan, so he could
have played anybody and I would have liked him.
And I love, whatchamacallit, Ray Park as Darth
Maul. You know, he's just a fantastic guy. For
some reason, I do have a problem with Jake Lloyd
as Anakin. I don't know why, I just didn't like
him. Yeah, I just didn't like him. He was too
goody -goody. You didn't see the side of Anakin
that would eventually come out later, right?
I know that's the point but but you should have
saw at least some kind of an inkling that he
was going to go that way Yeah, and I was always
I was I was always uh, you know He just looked
almost like they started him out too young Like
I wanted I don't know like everybody's innocent
as a nine -year -old You know, I would rather
them because basically we have him as a nine
-year -old and then we jump until he's in episode
two where he's 19 Yeah, like 19. I would have
rather seen at some point What is this kid like
at like 12 or 13 when you're really starting
to you know, get your identity? I would rather
seen that than seen a nine -year -old Well, you
know the other thing is that I want to point
out and then I'll be pointing out throughout
most of this this prequel talk here is that They
make a really big deal between episodes one and
two that Padme is so much older than Anakin She's
only five years older than him in this film.
I thought it was like a nine -year difference.
No, she's 14. It says that she came in... 9 and
14. Yeah, she came to power at 14. Listen to
the Weird Al song. It was still in it that is
still probably to this day one of the things
that as far as talking to most Star Wars fans
That threw them off the most about this first
movie that they were setting up a relationship
Which looked at the movie without knowing how
old they are you're guessing that this kid's
like eight or nine and she looks more like she's
like 20 something 16. Yeah, she almost looks
like she's like out of high school Yeah, I mean
especially when you're thinking that you know
when she is portrayed as the Queen Oh, and I
know back in the day, you know, I know if you
go way back in history Yeah, Queens are you know,
we're 14 years old in certain cultures, etc,
etc But we're not used to that in our culture
So it just was a disconnect from the beginning
that this little kid and this not that he's got
a thing for her That's fine. That's normal, but
it was that you could see that it was setting
this whole relationship on but it just seemed
weird yeah she had a lady boner for him robbing
the cradle kevin who is your favorite character
from episode one um... if i had to pick one because
it's the only time i get to it's it's got to
be ray park as darth maul or darth maul as that
character that character right i mean i can't
pick him again in episode two or episode three
so i'll pick him now steve what about you for
this one i would have to say jar jar What? I
almost just made a humongous mess. Too big. The
ending credits. Sorry. Whatever. I would have
to say probably Eamonn McGregor just because
it was cool to see a young Obi -Wan and he did
kind of have some of the likenesses and Tendencies
for the that particular character from the later
trilogy Yeah Let's see what what what's what's
your what is everybody's least favorite character
Jar Jar? Yes Okay, just making sure um Why was
actually 3po actually oh really why why because
he serves no purpose he serves no purpose because
intro Yeah, it's kind of like giving in the origin
story of Spider -Man. We see the origins of 3PO
and the fact that it ties back to the original
trilogy that 3PO was actually built by Luke's
father. Did 3PO have his memory banks completely
erased at some point? Yes. They actually do refer
this even in the Expanded Universe stuff too,
but it conflicts with the established Expanded
Universe. I don't know, why wouldn't Vader be
surprised to see 3PO years later? That's another
thing too, 3PO's model of protocol droid didn't
exist at this time. I was just thinking, when
3PO was back in the exact same spot that he was
in episode 1, in episode 4, like in the exact
same room on Tatooine... Like, shouldn't... I
don't know. Something should have triggered,
like, hey, I've been here before. Although R2
still had his memory. Yeah, why didn't R2 just
spill the fucking guts? Oh hey, guys, by the
way... We're kind of jumping ahead here that
actually comes into play at the end of episode
3. Because Bail Organa says to whoever he hands
off 3PO in R2 to, he says... and wipe the protocol
droid's memory. And 3PO is like, what? But they
never actually say to wipe R2's memory. And I
think the reason why, and it's just me thinking
that Lucas maybe had this idea was - Plot oversight?
Well, it could be plot oversight, but it could
be the fact that - Protect my ass. What Kevin?
He was just trying to protect his ass from all
the contradictions that would happen. It's just
that easy plot twist. Everybody's memory is erased
just in case anything in the next three movies
doesn't fit up. And the other thing with R2 is,
you know, if you look at the original trilogy,
R2 always knew more than almost everybody else
beforehand. Well, it's just like when he fixed,
uh, Amidala's, uh, ship. Yup. He was the only
smart one to move out of the way so he didn't
get blasted. Yup. He might have been the smartest
character in the film. I would have to say so.
In the entire franchise, I would say. Well, no,
he's not smarter than Yoda. Well, no, as far
as robots, I would say. Yeah. In the entire franchise,
it's R2 -D2. Do or do not. There is no try. Thanks,
Yoda. Um, so let's see. Let's talk about the
effects. I mean we kind of mentioned it a little
bit before but The effects on this just look
amazing Except for one thing in my opinion Jar
Jar No, no, no the CG this the digital stuff
done in this one compared to what we're gonna
see in episode 3 Is no like there's no comparison
They they improved their digital character so
much by episode 3 that watching it back Some
of this stuff in episode 1 looks a lot more fake
than it did the first time I watched it. Oh,
yeah And you know, I know he's a he's a big fan
on on visual effects and the visual effects are
you know, like I said before revolutionary But
to him, I don't I don't know he doesn't see things
that look fake I guess and to me it's very obvious
sometimes when it's digital Yeah. For me, I love
a lot of the effects. I really enjoy all the
lightsaber battles. I actually bought the Phantom
Menace PlayStation 1 video game when it came
out. Which one? Because there were several. The
film one. The one that I liked that came out
of this one was Jedi Power Battles. You could
play as Caddy Bundy, Kit Fisto, Obi -Wan, and
Qui -Gon. Yeah. Which is arguably the best Star
Wars game to come out of that one. Well, I guess
if you count Naboo Star, I think it was called
Star Wars Starfighter where you fought with Naboo
stuff. Talking about actually just kind of to
talk on your point about the lightsaber battles
when the fight choreographer Nick Gileard did
the fight Choreography, which I think he did
for like this way. I think he's done the entire
prequel stuff They wanted to show Jedi's in their
prime not old men and guys who hadn't fought
in 20 years, right? I thought that was a fantastic
choice to show these guys what they can do and
I was really happy from From from that standpoint
to see them actually doing cool shit Another
thing to mention about this movie is the props.
I would kill for a Qui -Gon Jinn FX saber, which
has been rumored for years when the license used
to be with Master Replicas. There were prototypes
done up. I've seen one of them. I mean, even
Obi -Wan's Episode 1 saber has been made into
props. I mean, if you're a big fan of the prop
collecting community, you know Master Replicas
and Icons did stuff, and they're tremendously
neat. One of the cool - pieces I own from this
movie is I have the double -bladed Darth Maul
saber that came out in 2006. Which you can actually
attach it in the middle and have a seven foot
fucking lightsaber, which is tremendously cool
I got this for Valentine's Day back in 2006.
I think I've seen one of those up close and they're
pretty cool Yeah, and you know, like you said,
I think I think the lightsaber I think it was
a great idea to contrast the styles that would
be around it in the time of the prequels compared
to what we're gonna get when we have people in
the original trilogy who are number one really
old or Not really human anymore more or number
two, way out of practice or have no training.
And I think it was good to see the difference
between these types of fights that we had in
the original trilogy to this more prime time,
you know, polished fighting that we have in the
prequel. My favorite thing visually and from
an effect standpoint is the planets that they
create. and the the scenery and all this stuff
because you know we had already exhausted all
of the earth the landscape you can find on earth
basically you know in the original trilogy we
had the desert we had the the forest area we
had the the snow area and all that so the way
they created these futuristic planets that was
impossible back in the seventies is something
that i think they did an excellent job on now
one of the cool things is they actually shot
the visual FX plates for the waterfall in for
Naboo in Niagara Falls. Which is kinda cool,
plus to create that effect that's actually not
water, that's salt. Which is tremendously neat.
So this thing definitely pushed digital effects
forward. The only complaint about the effects
in this movie is the Yoda puppet looks stupid.
Yeah. It sits back in an archive, and I think
it was Steve Sansweet, who's like one of the
big guys in the Star Wars community, said the
Yoda puppet, because he's been sitting there
for so long and hasn't moved, his face looks
like he's farting. Yeah, this is the worst Yoda
out of the six movies as far as look goes. Oh,
yeah. She looks the oldest. Yeah, it just doesn't
look right. Well, the other thing is that in
episode one they used a puppet, episodes two
and three, it was a digital animation. Cause
they learned. Cause they what? Cause they learned.
Puppets are very hard to do right unless you
take the time. And Luke, it's not like Lucas
didn't have money. It's just the guy that got
the duet, it looks fucking retarded. Yeah. Um,
Star Wars has always had great soundtracks and
this one is no exception and I am so glad. Sometimes
with films like with, say you have an original
film and have a sequel. I don't like when they
change composers. Depends on... I mean, it depends.
If you're going from a mediocre composer to a
mediocre composer, that's one thing. You can't
go from John Williams to somebody else. Well,
right. But I mean, like, what I'm saying is,
like... Don't think I would have liked any of
the Star Wars soundtracks if say John Williams
did three of them and then they brought in Danny
Elfman to do the other three I don't think I
would have liked the Danny Elfman versions is
what I'm saying base I'm agreeing with you because
John Williams is like the greatest composer as
far as movie music goes of all time So anyone
else thrown in there would have looked retarded
Yeah, I think other people could have done it
but it wouldn't feel the same because John Williams
has a very specific musical style when he does
that I'm not saying somebody like say James Horner
couldn't do a good score because look at the
score for the movie aliens look at how well that
sets up the movie but a Star Wars score is so
different you could not have brought on anybody
else to do that now if John Williams had passed
away let's just say There could have been other
composers. Danny Elfin may not have been a bad
choice. James Horner's another good one. There's
the guy, Hans Zimmerman's another good one. Hans
Zimmer, yeah. Yeah, so there's a lot of people
they could have went to, but it's a Williams
score. Lucas was not not going to bring this
guy back. I'm like, hey, John, you want to do
it? I've only been waiting 25 years there, George.
And you know, Mike kind of already mentioned
the Duel of the Fates. It even received its own
music video, which uses the chorus introduced
to give the religious temple -like feel to the
epic lightsaber duel. And, you know, you had
also mentioned, Mike, about you can hear part
of the Imperial March theme in Anakin's theme.
Yeah, like you can just hear a few kind of notes
in it. And another really good piece of music
from this film, it's actually the end score and
it's called Augie's Great Municipal Band. Just
listen to that. I mean, especially if you can
hear this in in five point one or if you got
really good headphones, just listen to all the
different instruments and the layers of sound
in there. It's fucking beautiful. Kevin, do you
have any trivia for episode one? I don't know,
two interesting things from episode one. There's
not as many to choose from, obviously, in this
one. If you're watching the pod race, which I
always like to skip, but if you're watching the
pod race, at one point they give a shot where
you see Anakin from the front with Subalba behind
him. But in one shot, Subalba's pod racer is
there and he is not anywhere in that thing. So
you can see Anakin and his podracer and you can
see Subalva's podracer behind him, but there's
no Subalva. So that's interesting. And my favorite
part about this is when they're in the Senate
council chamber and they're showing the different,
you kind of get a little, some different shots
at different groups that are in individual pods.
One of them is the ET family. And you can see
like, I don't remember how many, there's like
three or four actual ET characters in one of
the pods. Now, aren't the aliens and the predators
here too? Yes. That's what I thought. One of
them is. I don't know if the predators are. I
think maybe aliens is. I forget. The E .T.'s
are the easiest to spot though. Oh yeah. Yeah.
And that's just cool. Getting into the film's
release and box office and stuff like that. The
release of the first new Star Wars film in 16
years was accompanied by a considerable amount
of hype. Few film studios release films during
the same week as the release of The Phantom Menace.
Wow. You don't see that nowadays, especially
like next year. We've got like, what is it like,
one DC film versus like six Marvel films. Well,
you do see it sometimes though. Like when Transformers
came out, Die Hard completely moved to a different
week. Right. Yeah, so I mean you see it depending
on the movies and depending what types of movies
and what kind of genre and demographic they're
going after But you still see that more actually
I think movies nowadays are more strategic about
their release date than they ever have been before.
Oh, yeah As far as some reaction to it, it's
received mixed reviews from film critics It received
a rating of 62 % from Rotten Tomatoes uh... you
know i didn't critics what whatever that they
they can have their opinions and we probably
run tomatoes not bad though complain you know
compared to just if you're just looking at a
cisco or ebert or if you're just looking at this
guy at least run tomatoes is kind of uh... a
compilation of reviews yeah oh no i totally agree
a it's usually pretty uh... pretty good i mean
obviously everyone has their own personal taste
but it's usually a pretty good uh... a meter
to to judge what the what the uh... general consensus
is on a movie And you know, Mr. Tiny Dick Roger
Ebert gave it three and a half out of four stars
calling it an astonishing achievement in imaginative
filmmaking. This is his favorite one, isn't it?
I don't know. We'll have to see once we get to
the other ones. I'm pretty sure this is his favorite
one. Wouldn't be surprised. I wasn't going to
say anything. I was just trying to say um. I
think that's the one he rated the highest. After
the release of the film, there was controversy
over whether several of the alien characters
reflected racial stereotypes. This happens a
lot nowadays, actually. Well, I mean, look at
Transformers Revenge of the Fallen, although
that one is much worse. I would have to say it's
much worse. despite the fact that it's almost
fairly true in certain areas, especially in Michigan,
it's still just as bad. Except that one's more
noticeable. Jar Jar is just, you get some, who
cares, you get a black guy doing a goofy voice.
I mean, it's no different. You can make just
about any alien seem like he's a... a slam on
one race or another, even if there is intention
or no intention. Yeah, I would have to agree.
What about you, Mike? Yeah, I mean, it's up to
interpretation. And obviously now we're in the
era of the pissed off. Political correctness
so you know what fuck y 'all they're fucking
space aliens shut up. There's a bunch of different
races in space So obviously they're gonna represent
a bunch of different races. It's multicultural.
What the fuck more do you want right? It's a
multiverse of cultures Oh Wow just looking at
some of the award stuff here one of the things
you kind of jumped out at me uh empire ranked
the phantom menace 449th in the 2008 list of
the 500 greatest movies of all time i honestly
cannot believe this movie even made that list
well it had to simply because you look at the
marketing campaign you look at the hype it had
behind it you look at where it sits in the pantheon
of the star wars saga it makes sense it's kind
of a bullshit reason for it to be on there but
uh It is the biggest money maker, basically.
It's one of them, yeah. Well, for Star Wars,
unless you're obviously adjusting for inflation,
just going straight dollars, this is the biggest
one, money -wise. So I guess all the hype and
the whatnot was paid off in the end. So let's...
Do the IGN replacement crew here. We have one,
two, three, or four. One being the worst and
four being the best. Steve, what would you rate
Phantom Menace? This is not, we didn't ask you
what you would rate Jar Jar. We asked you what
you would rate the overall film. Two. Okay. Mike?
give it a three, because you know what, it's
not that bad. Like I said, I think it requires
multiple viewings to truly appreciate it. It's
just not the strongest way to restart the saga.
It's not the story I would have told. Right.
Kevin? Two. Two. I, unfortunately, like in passing,
if I didn't already have the DVD, I would say
probably a two or a three, but since I do have
the DVD, It's not a must -add to your collection,
but if you are a Star Wars geek and you want
to be completest with the films, you should have
all six films on DVD. Oh, yeah. There's nothing
wrong with having them all, but that doesn't
mean I'm gonna rank it any higher than I need
to. Oh, right. And like I said, I agree with
you guys. It's a solid two or three, but, you
know, on the flip side, I still have it, so...
Yeah, I have all six as well, but I don't care.
ever watch this one yeah I would rather watch
a lot of other ones before this one I like three
and six I have to agree with that actually as
we said it is on DVD the first time actually
it marks the first time a Star Wars film was
ever on DVD I think I think this was also the
last VHS ever produced yeah rights on both accounts
I do want to mention, because we didn't talk
about it before, a little bit of the deleted
scenes on this one, even though I don't think
they're that great. Out of all three of the prequels
that we're talking about, this one had the worst
out of the deleted scenes, mostly because half
of the deleted scenes are just parts of the pod
race that they cut out. Which if you watch the
movie you figure nothing got cut from that because
it's freaking an hour long pod race But you know
there was a couple of parts cut out from there.
There is a kind of a neat battle between or a
little scuffle between Anakin and Greedo the
only reason that's kind of cool is because at
the end One of the other characters says to Greedo
you better be careful or you're gonna meet bad
end or whatever which is kind of a little cool
little quote and then there's another scene where
they're Obi -Wan and Qui -Gon are on the waterfall
coming into the freaking am not remembering where
they're coming to us yeah coming into the palace
and they kind of get stuck in the ship goes over
the edge but they they make it away they make
it away from it so those are the really the only
deleted scenes it almost not even worth watching
actually on this disc I didn't even watch them
Yeah, they're pointless. They're lame. They're
lame. They're lame. They're lame. So up next,
you're going to hear the trailer for episode
2, Attack of the Clones. It's a great pleasure
to see you again, lady. It has been far too long,
Master Kenobi. Annie? My goodness, you've grown.
So have you. You've grown more beautiful, I mean.
Just being around her again is intoxicating.
Be mindful of your thoughts, Anakin. They betray
you. You have made a commitment to the Jedi Order,
a commitment not easily broken. Please don't
look at me like that. Why not? It makes me feel
uncomfortable. Sorry, m 'lady. Must be difficult
having sworn your love to the Jedi. Not being
able to do the things you like. I'll be with
the people that I love. Are you allowed to love?
I thought that was forbidden for a Jedi. No,
I'd be much too frightened to tease the Senate.
We could keep it a secret. I'd be living a lie.
I couldn't do that. Could you, Anakin? She's
a politician and they are not to be trusted.
I've heard this lesson before. You haven't learned
anything, Anakin. It's all Obi -Wan's fault.
He's holding me back! You're not all -powerful,
Anakin. Well, I should be. Someday I will be
the most powerful Jedi ever. Up next is episode
2, Attack of the Clones, which is a 2002 American
space opera film directed by George Lucas, no
surprise there, and written by Lucas and Jonathan
Hules. It is the fifth film to be released in
the Star Wars saga, and the second in the terms
of the internal chronology. As we said in episode
1, it's set 10 years after the events. of Phantom
Menace. Steve, when you first saw this in theaters,
what were your initial thoughts on this one?
Actually, I don't think I saw this particular
one in theater. I think I didn't have any money
to go. But I did see this when it did come out
for rental. And I would have to say that I like
this one a bit more. just because it skipped
some time and you could see how far everybody
had gone in that 10 -year span of time, as well
as some, of course, new things that happened
to pop up, such as the new Sith. Apprentice and
the Supreme Chancellor Palpatine. You can see
him getting more twisted. You can see Anakin
becoming more and more resentful of Obi -Wan
and more and more leaning on Palpatine. In general,
you can see that he was filled with rage towards
everything. There's just a lot of this film that
it was building up for the epic battle of the
next film. What about you, Kevin? You know, I
was pumped for this one. I'm pumped for every
Star Wars movie that comes out. I don't care
if they made 100 of them. I'd be excited for
every single one of them. But going into this
one was obviously a much different feeling than
going into the first one. Going into the first
one, you have, like we said in the previous part,
you know, you have 20 plus years of hype, and
it's all leading up to episode one. And then
you leave episode one. Disappointed to I mean
you have to be partially disappointed when you
leave after episode one So then you go into episode
two still excited because it's still Star Wars
and you're still gonna give it a chance but you're
also kind of skeptical and Maybe it was because
I was going in with you know with not as high
of expectations But this one was obviously a
much more satisfying feeling leaving the theater
Yeah, what about you Mike? Um, this is a movie
I actually didn't see till a few months after
it had been out I did see it in theaters, but
I it's weird this this movie I didn't really
like for the longest time and it's only in the
last two years. I've come to appreciate This
is probably it's in my top. I don't know. It's
of the prequels. It's my second favorite Because
I like what they do. I love Count Dooku Christopher
Lee is fucking awesome I also love how they talk
about how the army came to be But the thing with
this movie though is they try once again to juggle
too many plot threads So the movie never feels
like it's going anywhere. I find it kind of drags
in places again I mean, that's the big problem
with the prequels There's a lot of elements.
You got to get in fucking quick But, uh, I don't
know, I mean, the only part I didn't really like
is I didn't... I wasn't a huge fan of some of
the minor characters in this movie. I wasn't
a big fan of Zam Wessel, the bounty hunter who
tries to kill Anakin and clearly, or sorry, tries
to kill Amidala and fucks him. But, I don't know,
I found this movie... Once again, I find it gets
better with time, especially if you're a big
fan of the Clone Wars era of Star Wars. I find
this sets up a lot of really neat backstory and
expanded universe stuff. Like one game that was
based almost exclusively on episode two was awesome,
was Star Wars Bounty Hunter, talking about Jango
Fett. I'm a huge Fett fan. I love Jango. Jango
is probably one of my top three favorite characters
across the entire franchise. I mean even above
kind of Boba Fett. I think he's more badass personally,
but I don't know I mean I think it's a movie
that requires multiple viewings to truly appreciate
it Yeah, you know as far as the whole Fett thing
You know Django actually got more action than
Boba did honestly He ended up actually being
the whole If you think about it, he's got the
most appearances in the entire franchise. Well,
yeah, because of the clones, but... But you gotta,
you know, this again goes back to the fact that
these were not written back in 1970 or 1980.
These are written currently. And the reason I
bring that up is because you can't compare...
You know, the reason Boba gets no airtime is
because Lucas had no clue that that was going
to be everyone's favorite character when he made
them. Right. So, you know, and now that he knows
that, when he goes in to make these prequels,
of course, you know, he's going to have to try
to find a way to get Boba or something like Boba
in Django in there and as a main part because
of how much everyone liked it from the original
trilogy. So. You know, of course Django is going
to get more play time because now George Lucas
actually has a little bit of knowledge as to
which character is going to be favorites. Yes.
So, Kevin, why don't you summarize episode two
for us? All right. Basically, we have a couple
of sasshings. A sasshing? What's in a sasshing?
We have a couple assassination attempts on the
Queen, including the poison dart by the character
we just mentioned previously. Sam Wessel. Yeah,
Sam Wessel, the changeling. And the little centipede
bot guys. I don't know if they had an official
name. So you have these two assassination attempts.
I can't say that word apparently tonight. which
leads us to Anakin going with the Queen back
to Naboo to protect her and leads Obi -Wan to
trying to find the source of this dart which
leads him to Kamino and kind of you know fast
forwarding through that a little bit but he goes
to Kamino discovers this creation of this clone
army so to speak uh... and which eventually is
going to lead him on a uh... tracking mission
of uh... django all the way to uh... genosis
so that's kind of where we have the the two main
stories going on we had will be one tracking
django all the way to genosis meanwhile we had
uh... anakin with padme on the blue eventually
she convinces her to go back to tada we need
to uh... see his mom or to practice protect his
mom because he has the the nightmare vision or
whatever you wanna call it Which leads to him
finding out obviously that his mom's dead, he
kills a bunch of Tuskens. Well, now wait a second
here, I have to interrupt you just a minute.
She wasn't totally dead when he found her. Well,
obviously. She was more or less fucking toast.
Right. But anyways, that eventually leads to
the meeting of everybody in Geonosis as we have
Anakin... padme and obi -wan all captured in
the uh... the genosis basically uh... glad gladiatorial
arena uh... and they're fighting the monsters
in the big pit and then of course we have the
clone army show up with yoda and mace and all
those guys and we have uh... an epic huge battle
in the in the arena uh... which is the rest of
the movie basically one of the things i want
to bring up was uh... The role of Padme between
episode 1 and episode 2. Obviously episode 1
she was the queen. Now because so much time has
passed within the films, she's now just a senator.
And of course there were hints at some point
in episode 3, and we'll get to that, but there
were hints that, you know, they were actually
going to start the Rebel Alliance. Right. What
do we think of the character change? I mean obviously
you can only be queen for so... so much amount
of time, but I mean, what do you guys think of
the character change for Padme? Mike? I much,
much preferred her in this one. Yeah, I do too.
She's less of a pussy than she was in Ep 1, and
way better than Ep 3. Exactly. Where she turns
barefoot and fucking pregnant. This is the best
you're gonna see Padme. She's kind of along the
lines of Leia in this one. Yeah, exactly, she
tries to be... proactive and actually do she
had the on his uniform at one point i find anakin's
a bit of a whiny vagina in this movie yes yes
but my favorite character like i said is cow
dooku because he is he's he's a charming guy
i'm sorry i didn't even i didn't even mention
and mention him in the plot that's my bad yeah
well yeah i mean this episode well People that
are listening have clearly already seen these
movies. I can imagine all the hate mails piling
up for all the facts are probably getting wrong.
But, I don't know, Count Dooku, I thought, was
a very interesting apprentice to Darcydius. Basically,
you can see him building the Confederacy of Independent
Systems, which is more or less told, hey guys,
the Republic sucks, we're gonna split off, do
our own thing. And then, you know, you get, you
know, the Techno Union breaking off and all that
shit. So, I don't know, there's a lot more going
on this, and I like how Count Dooku is orchestrating
it. And once again, go read the Expanded Universe
stuff, because there's a lot of plot holes that
get filled in, and you get to see just how Count
Dooku came to be like this. In fact, the Dark
Horse series covering the Clone Wars that happens
after this movie is fucking fantastic. So, um...
I don't know, I'm trying to think of another
thing I can mention. Oh yeah, R2 Flying is stupid.
No, no, no, hold on, hold on, wait a second,
hold on, shut up. I'm sorry. No, R2 Flying is
awesome. The whole point of R, the whole point
of the prequels minus episode one, episode two
and episode three. You know, we get teased in
episode 4, 5, and 6 of telling of the past, of
the Clone Wars, and of all this stuff. Episode
2 and episode 3 is where we see the action that
happened, and R2 Flying is awesome. How did R2
Flying have anything to do with what you just
said? That's what I want to know because he is
more he sees more action We said they said in
episode four, you know, three people said oh
with all the action we've seen So it's that's
a reference. I'll give you this I would much
rather see our two flying than see all the dumb
characters. We saw in episode one. Okay? All
right That is the lone point I will give you
one of the things and this I guess I'll talk
about more about this kind of later on You can
see where Anakin definitely goes more towards
the dark side of this movie, more specifically
looking at his lightsaber design. It basically,
it's a chrome Empire Strikes Back saber. And
it's probably my second favorite saber of the
original trilogy. We also hadn't kind of mentioned
it, but just because you said something about
lightsabers, the whole theme here of everybody
losing their lightsabers and dropping it. Yeah,
it's like, oh, it's coated in grease, can't hold
on to it, whoa. Right. You were talking about
your favorite character and stuff, and I like
Count Dooku and the fact that they did a good
job bringing in completely different Sith people.
It would have been bad if they tried to make
another badass Darth Maul type character. And
I like the fact that we had this younger, you
know, badass Darth Maul character in the first
one. And now we have a kind of an older experience,
kind of more sly guy, not as athletic per se,
but still just a bad just. as much of a badass
fighter, but I like the differences between those
two characters. My favorite character, though,
in this one would be, just because I am a huge
Fett fan, I'd probably have to say Jango Fett.
That's because he's fucking harsh, man. The thing
about Dooku, then, something we need to bring
up was, he was a Jedi. He got turned. Mm -hmm.
And that's why he is in this movie, is because
they want to show and kind of, you know, give
everybody a hint as to what happens and what
can turn someone and that it has been done before
and what steps it takes to get there so that
we can kind of understand it when it's happening
to Anakin just like it happened to Count Dooku.
Right, yeah. So it ties a lot of stuff together.
I mean, basically, it's the seduction of power,
and I think Dooku really believes he can change
things. I mean, Dooku is being manipulated at
the core level by Sidious. I mean, he was a good
guy in the beginning, but Sidious warped this
guy over years and years and years, which you
definitely start to see how Sidious has been
planning this thing pretty much right from the
kind of get -go. That's another thing I love
about this movie. There is a nice subtext to
see. just how much all this is going according
to plan. Yeah, I just, I did find it slightly
odd that Count Dooku or some version of him was
at least not somewhere in the background or made
some type of appearance in episode one, even
if he didn't have a speaking role, even if he
wasn't named, just because this guy didn't just
appear out of nowhere. Well, it was also mentioned
in the Expanded Universe, he'd left the Republic
for quite some time. I think, I can't remember
whether he was with Jorah Seaboth during the,
this, there was a project that happened I think
around this time where they sent Jedi into the
unknown regions and I think he was part of that
team. I'm once again, I'm not sure Mike at thisweekengeek
.net if I'm fucking this up, but I just remember
he'd left for a while. So Sidious had also, he
had to follow the Sith rule of two. You can only
have one master. and one apprentice, but that
doesn't mean you can't have multiple people waiting
in the wings to fucking stab each other, but
that's what screwed over the Sith back in the
Old Republic, because there were too many of
them, so I'm not surprised we didn't see Sidious
for quite some time, plus the fact that if he
remains in his persona of, hey, I'm still a good
guy, I still care, it makes sense for him to
stay out of it. Well, and the whole thing throughout
all three of these prequel films, Up until episode
three, you get hints of Sidious. He is still
Palpatine up until episode three, but you get
hints of the Sidious side of his personality
throughout all three films. Yeah. What about
you, Steve? What do you think? I think the whole
Count Dooku thing was kind of cool for this one.
It was nice to see Yoda actually do something
other than sit on his ass. The droids, I could
care less. The Boba Fett thing with a Django,
that was pretty kick -ass having that show up
in this in such an awesome way. The other bounty
hunters, two craps less about you could definitely
see like all the aging as far as the characters
like how they looked acted interacted with each
other Anakin should have had his ass beat and
then a lightsaber stabbed through his heart but
you know then again he gets his later It was
nice to see them kind of have like a build -up
and a battle kind of in a way similar to Empire
Strikes Back in the sense of that they just have
a bunch of random fronts going on. Yeah. But
again, it's not really, I mean, it's by far better
than episode one. Oh, yeah. And it's an even
more set up for Episode 3, but it's not particularly
my favorite in this trilogy. Yeah, but I don't
know, it's just one of those things where, like
you said Steve, it sets up Episode 3. It just
does. I mean, it's pretty much the entire film.
It's just a setup. It's showing where they got
these clone armies. Everybody's standing on each
side of the fence and just basically setting
up for the final card to be played by Palpatine.
Yeah, you're right. Where do we want to go from
here? Do we want to talk about more of the actual
film stuff? Well, I actually do have a story
relating to one of the characters of this movie,
actually. I actually met Daniel Logan a couple
years ago, actually, and he told me a story about
him and Ewan McGregor when they were doing one
of the fight scenes together. Evidently, part
of Ewan McGregor's wonderful repertoire of acting
advice is he told young Daniel Logan, okay, I
want you to make a face. Like, you just smelled
a really bad fart. And that was where Jango Fett
and Obi -Wan are talking in the apartment on
Kamito. And look at Daniel Logan's face and think,
smelly fart. You can see it. And I remember Daniel
Logan just telling me how he was a huge joker
on set, stuff like that, which was kind of cool.
And then later on, I actually met Tamura Morrison.
who played Jango Fett. He's another really nice
guy. Didn't get an interview with him, but I
got a promo from him. So yeah, it's really cool.
Sometimes I choose it for Twig. He's like, he
oughta, this is Jango Fett. And he's a very nice
guy. But yeah, it was kind of cool meeting some
of these people who I love in the prequels, although
I hope Daniel Logan gets to play young Boba Fett
when the Star Wars television show finally gets
rolling. But yeah, so there's a little bit of
stuff you didn't know plus Count Dooku's lightsaber
is the shit just saying Yeah, and well, I think
one thing that separates this one from episode
one though is like I said during when we were
talking about episode one episode one to me did
not feel like a Star Wars movie and this one
did because they had so many different things
that were You know tie -ins to the original trilogy
that that the first one didn't have I don't know
if it's because the first one they were just
all too young and it had to Set up all this stuff
and you know, there was so much Wasted time and
and humor added into it, but this one I mean
you see when you see the clone army being assembled
it's just epic and when you see some of the things
like the different What am I trying to say here?
Like the chase scenes that we see instead of
a pod race you get back to some of the chase
scenes like we had in the original trilogy uh...
you have the same tattooing location being used
again and you have the connection with burrow
and lars and the blue milk and there's just all
these different things with the same people it
just ties it in so much better makes it feel
like a star wars movie to me where the episode
one just didn't do that well i don't think yes
it is tattooing but i don't think it's the same
place like it's not anywhere near mos Eisley
i don't think is it No no no, I'm talking about
the place where Brew and Lars are. Oh, okay.
That's actually a little bit of trivia. They
actually searched out and found the exact location
that they used when filming the original trilogy
in Tunisia. It's the exact same spot. That's
awesome. And you know, that kind of explains,
I think you mentioned it when we were talking
about the original trilogy too, when they see
Brew and Lars, and you know, when Lars is kind
of... Now known as Anakin's stepbrother if you
want to put it together that kind of explains
why Luke goes there I think you were questioning
that before right what I was what I was questioning
was how the hell is Lars or uncle Owen his uncle
and all that but now that obviously I you know,
I see that now because he's Anakin's stepbrother
And I think what? All I was going to say really
quick was I think they did a really good casting
job with Owen and Beru. Because they look spot
on like younger selves of the older versions.
I agree with that a lot. One of the other tie
-ins, I just remembered it now that I was trying
to think of between this one and the old ones.
I like how they did when they're going through
the asteroid. field and Obi -Wan tries to do
the little you know he hides on the one success
oh yeah it's kind of like the Falcon well I love
how they do how that's why Boba Fett doesn't
fall for it when the Falcon does it because he
had already seen that trick used right so I love
that type of stuff that's tied in between episode
2 and episode 3 and the original trilogy and
we didn't get any of that with episode 1 right
yeah What's everybody's favorite part or favorite
scene from this one? The ending with the clone
army. Yes. For sure. Just seeing them line up
with those victory class star destroyers, seeing
them march out, seeing the different clone ranks,
the captains, the lieutenants. If you can't tell,
I'm a bit of a military buff. But I loved it.
Maybe we should change your last name to Bay.
Fucking aim. Oh my god. I love Michael anyways.
Anyways, we're not going there Yeah for me I
will agree, but I like the the Dooku Yoda lightsaber
battle because as we set up, you know In episode
one, it was just a puppet whereas now Yoda for
action. He's days all digital animation Yeah
But that scene was so overhyped for like 30 seconds
of fight scene. That's kind of true, too, but
it's still a pretty kickass scene. I think we're
all going to have a different favorite scene
on this one because I do love the ending fight
scene. I think the ending fight scene is the
best fighting scene in a group as far as big,
massive military like or group fighting. That's
one of the best fight scenes we get in all six
movies. with the only one maybe rivaling it to
me is the Hoth scene but I love that fight scene
but I think my favorite scene is a combination
of number one scene the clones assembled the
first time when you see them kind of all together
that really is a kind of an epic scene and I
love the scene when Anakin takes out the sand
people yeah that was pretty badass that was badass
it was dark it made sense it was not kid -like
you know there was nothing you know they didn't
Trying to tame it down too much and it was just
badass Right. What about you Mike? Yeah, I kind
of are already another favorite scene that I
do like is Probably the scene I talked about,
Daniel Logan, where you see those two characters
connect, and you hear Llama Sue explaining in
voiceover what Fett wanted in return to train
the clone army, was one unaltered clone for himself.
Which they kind of, it's a little bit of bullshit
because later on, and once again, the expanded
universe, Boba Fett has a clone degenerative
disease. So he's not technically unaltered. Well,
I guess because he was cloned via the Spartai
cloning cylinders, but I'm talking about stuff
you guys probably don't know about except maybe
Kevin so I'm gonna shut up now. So Steve, what
about you? What's your favorite scene? Dooku
versus Yoda. I love any scene that has Yoda actually
in a lightsaber battle. So what the whole two
scenes he's ever done? There were still awesome
scenes though. You can't deny that Mike. For
me the the biggest problem I have with this episode
it's not really like I kind of already said my
favorite part of it was was the Yoda battle,
but My biggest issue with episode 2 is the goddamn
love story. I hate that Well, but it's a hat
they had I know they had to have it but my main
complaint about it is she has the stupid ear
muff look, but it's like a ribbon tied around
pieces of her hair to make it look like the layout
ear muffs. It was so fucking lame. Well, you
got to realize that George Lucas has no experience
or no knowledge of how to do a romance or a love
story. Well, that's true too. Well, we've kind
of already glossed over his directorial credits
here, so... He just wanted a piece of ass at
the end of the story. He wanted to fuck the hottest
chick he could. Yes. Uh, so getting into the
cast, um, why don't we just talk about favorite
characters? Uh, Mike, we know one of your favorite
characters is Dooku. Other than Dooku, who is,
do you have another favorite character from episode
two? Django Fett. Despite not having a lot of
screen time, when he's in the scene, you know
he's in the scene. That's what I love. I mean...
Tomorrow Morrison brought I felt a lot to that
role despite not having a lot there He just has
this very big presence and the fact that he gets
killed by fucking mace Windu I thought was just
the shittiest way for him to go out but he takes
out a couple of Jedi before he bites the The
kind of bullet to plus the fact Django was a
legitimately caring father. Yeah, he just happened
to do really bad things I mean, he's a bounty
hunter. He's a mercenary He has no personal stake
in all this. Other than the fact that the Jedi
fucked over his planet years and years ago, he's
got reason to hate their guts. So, I think he's
a tragic character in a lot of ways, and that's
why he's my favorite. And it sucks that Boba
got orphaned by these guys who are supposed to
be negotiating, but I guess he fired first. Nice
little jab there. See what I did there? Yeah,
I see what you did there. But the thing you're
overlooking about mace killing django is just
the sheer way he did it because every like when
i saw that like the first time i saw that scene
i just my jaw was like halfway to china for christ's
sake he just decapitated him Yeah, it's a little
unorthodoxly brutal, but Mace Windu fights with
a very specific lightsaber style, which courts
very close to the dark side, so I'm not surprised
Mace Windu killed him as opposed to just wounding
him. It would have been smarter for him to leave
Jango Fett alive to question him, but Jango wouldn't
have gave up anything anyway. Yeah, yeah. Kevin,
what about you? Django Fett easily I am I will
say that I'm not as annoyed as you guys are with
Anakin in this movie I I liked him better than
I liked Anakin in the first movie He wouldn't
be my favorite character, but I did prefer him
over the young version, but yeah, it's easily
Django Fett and then after that It's it's really
hard after that all the other characters are
just kind of the same So not not any of them
necessarily stood out to me. I like different
versions of Obi -Wan better I like different.
Well, this is the best Padme version. So maybe
I'll say her. Yeah, what about you Steve? Okay
For me like The movie as a whole, I like a lot
of the movie, but as far as favorite characters,
it has to be seeing R2 in action and actually
doing stuff and not just cursing at C -3PO and
beeps. I just found that really refreshing that
they actually did something with R2 and actually
showed him in action, say what you want, dot
about, it's not cool that he flew. I thought
it was because... It's something you didn't expect.
I mean, it's not as jaw -dropping as, you know,
Mace cutting off Jango's head, but I still kind
of got a chuckle and a little bit of a jaw drop
when I saw R2 fly. I'm like, oh, he can fly.
He somehow loses this ability later on. It's
just kind of like I said before, you know, it's
more like the original trilogy where the droids
are the ones creating the comic relief, and if
that's what had to happen and that saved us from
having other stupid characters, then I'm fine
with it. Oh, wow. So Jar Jar goes from a Moronic
character to a general in episode one and in
here he's a senator now. Oh my god Yeah, I didn't
know that through the movie, but I I mean Padme
just said he's the official representative of
Naboo. She didn't call him a senator. No, she
did not call him a senator. Shut up. You know
what I meant. Well, George Lucas heard the fans
loud and clear on Josh. He quickly became a background
character as he should have. A large search for
the new Anakin Skywalker was performed across
the United States. Lucas auditioned various actors,
mostly unknown, before casting Christensen. Among
the many established actors who auditioned were
Jonathan Brandis, Ryan Philippi, Colin Hanks,
and Paul Walker. Leonardo DiCaprio also met with
Lucas for the role, but was definitely unavailable
according to DiCaprio's publicist. One of the
things this is actually kind of it kind of ties
into my other website that I do Blizzard thumbs
net one of the weirdest things in that game.
I just this toy just reminded me of it There's
one girl you're trying to seduce who wants to
be an actress and they randomly go on a 10 -minute
tangent about Hayden Christensen in Star Wars
attack of the clothes It's really weird. It's
this conversation. You get her naked, and she
starts doing sexy poses for you. It's really
weird. But all the time, he's like, imagine you're
Hayden Christensen, and you're going to be doing
this nurse in the butt with this dildo, and you're
going to be talking to this teddy bear. But don't
forget, it's Hayden Christensen. And they just
throw that in your face. There's a little bit
of random trivia for you. Leisure suit Larry
Magna Cum Laude has Hayden Christensen mentioned
in it multiple times. Let's talk about the effects
for this one. They greatly improved over the
first film. There was only a few spots that really
bugged me in this one that looked completely
fake. One of them is when they're on the conveyor
belt when Padme and Anakin are on the conveyor
belt things where he gets his hand caught. There's
a couple of sequences in there that look really
fake. But other than that, like you said, it
did a much better job than the first one as far
as looking real. That was really about one of
the only scenes that I was like, ah, that's kind
of cheesy. But other than that, I believe most
of the digital stuff, and like we talked about
before, it's a much better version of Yoda. Oh,
yeah. What about you, Mike? You're all about
special effects. I was really happy with the
way they gave the scale and the scope of everything.
Everything seemed grander. I mean, seeing the
clones attack, Geonosis was amazing. Seeing all
the Jedi fight on Geonosis was cool. Camino as
a completely digital environment. I thought was
fantastic Yeah, um I was just really happy overall
also seeing Coruscant in a different light to
seeing the the underside of it I mean they could
they could have very well of the sports bar Yeah,
it could have been now Hutta at the same time,
and it looked just cool I was really happy with
the way everything looked in this movie plus.
I guess we're talking special effects. We can
talk props favorite prop in this movie is Count
Dooku's curved lightsaber, which you would see
later on in the Clone Wars mini -series, kind
of, when you look at Asajj Ventress' lightsaber.
It kind of has the same curved design mixed with
Darth Maul's double -bladed saber. But yeah,
overall I thought it was neat, plus seeing a
new version of the Mandalorian armor with like
Jango Fett in the dual pistols was very cool.
I'm trying to think of what else here was neat.
Seeing Count Dooku's solar ship I thought was
kind of cool another thing was the Republic gunships
because they're actually modeled after Vietnam
-era Helicopters, and if you listen to the sound
mix on it. You can kind of hear that mixed into
the engine I love just the sound the gunships
make so other than that pretty badass and Fantastic
stuff from this thing overall. Yes very much
so All right Steve, do you have any thoughts
on the effects? Only that you can tell that it
looks more realistic than the first movie. It
doesn't look as cartoony as the first film. I
don't know, it's more crisp, you could say. They
did a better job blending the digital in with
the real. Yeah, but they do an even better job
in the third film. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. As far
as the music goes, again, obviously, John Williams.
The the soundtrack recreates the Imperial March
from episode 5 Actually, this is It's not really
a surprise to me, but the CD originally shipped
with a bonus PC screensaver Four different soundtrack
covers each sold separately were distributed
at the time one featuring Yoda another featuring
Anakin and Padme a Third featuring Django and
the fourth featuring the film's final poster
art Mike. Do you have the third disc? I don't
know whether I do and I got no I don't think
so I got this as a Christmas gift from a girlfriend
I don't think I got that one Let's see we're
gonna go from here um Kevin you got any trivia
for this one Yeah, a few more than in the first
one in the speeder chase at the very beginning
if you look really hard It's kind of hard to
see but you can see an x -wing being chased by
three TIE fighters The actual actor Anthony Daniels
who plays C -3PO is in the sports bar without
any costume on basically without the C -3PO get
up obviously you can see him as a person. In
the Hall of Records the bus that are going down
the side of the room are all George Lucas and
all the producers and the people behind the scenes.
I love the scene when Django goes back into his
vehicle where he hits his head. And they say
they and George Lucas actually did that on purpose
because he says it's then a trait that the clones
inherit and that's why the stormtrooper hits
his head in the original trilogy So I guess that
was a way of covering up one of the bloopers
from the original trilogy the the guy in charge
of the The effects there says that the shadow
at the beginning when it's cast from Anakin against
the the sand there That it was not intended to
look like Darth Vader even though most people
thought it was. And other than that, there's
just a couple cut scenes as far as Jango was
supposed to be in the Geonosis scene standing
next to Count Dooku, but they didn't want that
connection being made that early in the film.
They left out a scene of when Anakin goes to
look after, to try to find his mom. He originally
came across the search party, but they were all
bodies that had been left for dead after they
were killed by the San people. So they took that
out. And the only other thing is that every single
clone in any of these movies is all digital.
They never made an actual clone trooper suit
to have in any of the films. However, though,
master replicas later on, when they started doing
some of the props, would actually take those
digital scans and actually make them into fiberglass
helmets, which are highly collectible. If you
can get them, fucking get them, because they're
amazing. The fact that all those clones were
digital though. I never knew that and they did
a fantastic job of making those look real Oh,
yeah, for sure. I'm trying to think there was
something else I was gonna mention here, but
I can't remember what it was so Finally, I finally
remembered the name of the centipede things.
They were called cohoons Centipede things at
the beginning the the centipede bots that we're
gonna go after a pad Oh, okay. They're gonna
eat her. Yeah cohoons I remembered it. Alrighty
then. As far as at the box office, Attack of
the Clones was screened out of competition at
the 2002 Cannes Film Festival before getting
a worldwide theatrical release on May 16, 2002.
Let's see, reception. Attack of the Clones received
generally mixed to positive reviews on the Rotten
Tomatoes review site. The film received 66 %
favorable rating. Their general admiration for
the action sequences and special effects. Roger
Evert who has praised all of the other Star Wars
films awarded this edition only two out of four
stars describing it the first half is too dialogue
heavy and slow -paced while Deriding the romantic
sentiments of Anakin and Padme is cliched. Well,
yeah, that's probably the only time anyone's
gonna ever hear me agree with him. Yeah I hate
the romance story in this I just do it's not
only because it was badly done. It's not that
it was bad that they had one It was just yeah,
it was just poorly handled um Actually, I thought
there's an interesting thing about the box office
So this is the only one of all six Star Wars
films that did not become the top -grossing US
film of that year, and it's also the lowest performing
Star Wars film in North American box office But
I did not realize that all other five led the
box office for that year in the U .S. This one
did come against some pretty heavy competition
with Spider -Man, Lord of the Rings, Two Towers,
and Harry Potter, Chamber of Secrets, though,
so it's not a surprise. Very true. But all things
considered, those are all vastly superior films
compared to this, though. Yeah. Which is unfortunate.
But I mean usually it doesn't matter because
the Star Wars fandom makes the Star Wars movie
the top box office film of the year. Right. But
that one could not compete with those movies
and the fact that it was not necessarily the
best Star Wars movie. Right. As far as the iGen
replacement crew, Steve, what would you rate
episode two? I would probably say I would give
this one a three. I'm with Steve. I'm with Steve.
I'll give this one a three. I gave the last one
a two this one gets a three Yeah, same here.
Yeah, I would have to agree It's a solid three
So as we've said before it is on DVD It was re
-released in the prequel trilogy box set on November
4th 2008 and of course, you know The all six
films are scheduled for Blu -ray release in 2011.
Apparently there's an adaptation to it, the novel.
Two novels based on the movie were published,
an Italian junior novel by Scholastic, and a
novelization written by R .A.'s Salvatore, which
includes some unique scenes. A four -issue comic
book adaptation was written by Henry Gilroy and
published by Dark Horse Comics like Mike said
before. There is a couple deleted scenes I want
to bring up from the DVD just because unlike
the episode one ones They actually do have some
decent deleted scenes That go back. There's a
great scene if you have the DVD set for episode
two, the box set, go to the episode two deleted
scenes, watch the Padme addresses the Senate.
I thought that was a great scene. It was a great
speech by her that kind of gives a little bit
better of a intro into that whole storyline.
And I think it was awesome that they went to
Padme's parents' house. Padme and Anakin, I know
you don't like the love story, but this was actually
one of the better scenes in that whole romance.
And they cut it out. But these two, the scenes
with Padme and the deleted scenes are actually
very much worth a watch. Very cool. And up next
you are going to hear the episode 3 trailer.
The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many
abilities some consider to be unnatural. Is it
possible to learn this power? Not from a Jedi.
The Council wants you to report on all the Chancellor's
dealings. That's treason. We are at war, Anakin.
Very dangerous putting them together. I don't
think the boy can handle it. I don't trust him.
I need your help, son. I'm appointing you to
be my personal representative on the Jedi Council.
You're on this council, but we do not grant you
the rank of Master. What? Obi -Wan and the council
don't trust me. Learn to know the dark side of
the Force and you will achieve a power greater
than any Jedi. You're under arrest, Chancellor.
Are you threatening me, Master Jedi? Every single
Jedi is now an enemy of the Republic. Do what
must be done. Do not hesitate. Show no mercy.
Who could have done this? Twisted by the dark
side, young Skywalker has become a slave. I feel
so helpless. You were the chosen one! special
here on MWIRE we have episode 3 revenge of the
Sith which is a 2005 American space opera film
written and directed by George Lucas it is the
sixth and final film released in the Star Wars
saga and the third in the overall internal chronology
of the series I so missed out on this in theaters
I missed out on episode 2 and 3 in theaters I
just I don't know Arby's Shut up Mike Sorry shut
up. I'm good now good Yeah, uh, so I'm assuming
everybody but me has seen this in theaters. Oh
Boy, I was there at fucking 8 a .m. And there
was already 25 people ahead of me Yeah costume
that's better than 2500 people ahead of you This
is the movie that got me back in the Star Wars
hardcore collecting I have every exclusive that
was released via Target or Toys R Us. I've got
every vehicle. I even have stuff from C3. I spent
$500 on a Obi -Wan Kenobi lightsaber, which I
have in my house, which is tremendously cool.
I have all the mini sabers from this movie. I
actually used to work with the company Master
Replicas through another site that I was doing,
fx -sabers .com, which is fantastic and still
around. Um, this is the movie that made me love
Star Wars again. Totally. This is what brought
me way back into it. So this movie is probably,
I'd argue it's probably my favorite Star Wars
movie, then probably Empire. I love this movie
to death. I mean, I've read all the books, I've
played all the games, I've talked to some of
the voice cast, so this movie's uh, fucking harsh.
So uh, Kevin, pick it up. Yeah, I mean, this
one, this to me, you know, you had going through
this whole prequel trilogy, I was stoked as hell
for the first episode because it was going to
be the first time I was going to see a new one
in the theater, like I said before. Then I went
out disappointed. So the second one I came in
like, oh, I don't know how excited I should be.
I don't know how good this is going to be. I
left the theater after the second one excited.
And I basically had the same, if not more, you
know, the same amount of excitement I had for
number one in a different way for number two,
because now I was like. There's no possible way
you're gonna have episode 3 without it being
fucking dark as hell. Yeah. And there was no
way they could kid this up. There was no way
they could make this funny. This was some serious
shit and there was no way in my mind that they
could screw this up. So I was I was very excited
for episode 3 and I remember camping out I like
I said I was working at target when we had some
of those exclusives I remember the line going
out the door and me pocketing a bunch before
the store even opened but uh, yeah Kevin do you
remember how nuts people were for the target
exclusive clone? We handed the tickets out I
don't know if they do this at every target, but
we had like little tickets that you to hand it
out like cards That you had to hand out to the
people that were waiting outside the door And
that was the only way that you would then get
the figure. And I actually have all the tickets
now because they had to hand them to us. I was
the one collecting the tickets. So I actually
have the entire stack of tickets. But yeah, people
were crazy. I had people calling me up that knew
me that were trying to like use my inside source,
I guess, to try to get one. And I was like, you
know what, you got to show up at the door. I
have my two, but I can't get any more for anybody
else. It was retarded. I also remember when they
had the lava reflection, Anakin and Obi -Wan,
how little those. And then there was the Lava
Reflection Vader which was on clearance for like
eight months afterwards There was quite a few
exclusives done though in that time period Yeah,
like one of the worst was good. I I had to bust
my ass to get the Star Wars the Star Wars shop
Exclusives like getting the Shadow Trooper plus.
I'm an army builder So I had to get one to put
in package one to open one to play with and one
the mod so I spent a retarded amount of money
in fact I Used to rip off stores and not mean
stealing well stealing in a sense. I would do
the price match trick Nice take the tag off and
put it on something else. No act like the indignant
fan and go to the customer service Do you realize
this is $30 cheaper over at such -and -such?
Hmm. Well, there's ten people in lines here.
We don't have time to call over Well, I have
time to walk over there. Oh Okay, so Yeah, I
got the clone, uh, Arkfighter, which retailed
for 60 bucks. Got it for 20. Um, and all these
other things. It was ridiculous. I'm a horrible
person, but, uh, I'm okay with that. Well, price
matching is, is not bad. It's when you - Outright
lying is bad. Yeah, it's when you take a sticker
from one thing and put it on another thing, Steve.
When you're a collector, you have to find ways
to make it in your budget. Yeah, including getting
free movie tickets. Never mind What about you
Steve? I Can't remember one way or the other
if I saw this in theater I Do know that I saw
it around I think I think I saw this about three
days after it came out because I didn't want
to do with all the bullshit of trying to into
the theater and usually if you wait until after
it's not as busy so I don't know I saw it I liked
it this by far I would have to say is my favorite
of the prequels and I would have to almost say
that this is probably better than the other three
as well, just because it's the high point. Like
the most tension, the most graphically insane,
the best battle between the ultimate good of
Yoda and the ultimate evil of Palpatine. Just
the whole overall dynamic, I'd have to say, is
much better. And plus, the other thing is, I'm
sure we'll get into this in a little bit, but
we see how Anakin became Darth Vader. I mean,
it was always hinted at in New Hope and Empire
and in Return, but, you know, we actually get
to see it. Yeah. However, that scene was kind
of lame when Darth Vader decided to talk. No!
That's the only part of the movie where I laughed
out loud at the theater. And everybody looked
at me like I was fucking crazy. You mean when
he's screaming no about Padme? Yeah, I just burst
out laughing. And he's Darth Vader going, no.
It's like, shut your face. It's kind of like
that line from A League of Their Own. There's
no crying in baseball. Darth Vader doesn't pussify.
He does if he's Anakin and he's a teenager. See,
that's the other thing we have to realize that
Anakin was just put into this suit. He's just
a boy. It's not. Oh god. Um, it's not, uh...
It's not Darth Vader fully yet. It's not like
he's been in the suit for like two years. You
know what I mean? He's just going into it. Right.
He's got a catheter is what you're saying. I
shouldn't have told you fuckers about that bad
day. What the fuck is wrong with you assholes?
Arby's clearly. Fuck you. R2D2. Anyways, Kevin,
why don't you summarize episode three? I'll try,
I'll try. Basically, we start off with this massive
space battle going on, which is pretty much the
most epic space battle that we've seen in all
six movies, which leads us to Anakin and Obi
-Wan going after the captured Supreme Chancellor
Palpatine, who's in his little energy handcuffs
and whatnot, which leads to a battle with Count
Dooku. Anakin basically... This is his head off
destroy a scissors his head off and then they
have to escape from the the crashing spacecraft
we have obviously underlying themes of the the
Chancellor trying to Slay Anakin over we have
the underlying themes of Anakin and Padme's relationship
continuing until obviously she's gonna be pregnant
but anyways what happens after the death of Count
Dooku is that Obi -Wan goes on a mission to try
to find General Grievous and take him out Which
obviously he's successful eventually in? shooting
him in the stomach and Meanwhile skipping ahead
a lot Anakin is swayed by Palpatine to cross
over he goes on a murdering rampage of kids and
Then we have the whole order 66 happening leading
us to the last hour of the movie which is the
best Star Wars hour in history so far with the
Jedi being taken out one at a time and then we
have the the final scene which is split between
Yoda and Palpatine fighting and Obi -Wan and
Anakin fighting um... eventually obviously yoda
loses his battle with the senator or the chancellor
and then com goes to dagobah to be a hermit and
obviously we want a successful and what he thinks
is killing anakin and our last little scene is
obviously the two twins being split up so that
leaves us right into episode four and then darth
vader being created as well right the thing about
I've actually watched episode three twice before
we recorded this. I watched it with the commentary
and without the commentary. Lucas actually says
in the commentary, the two scenes where Padme
is giving birth and Vader is being born, they
were initially two separate scenes. They were
not intermingled like they are now, as we know
them in the film. And I am so glad that he intermingled
them and not made them two separate scenes. Yeah,
that was a good choice. Yes birth of multiple
characters at the same time Favorite characters
whose favorite character any and these motherfucking
Anakin man I love him in this movie despite being
called mannequin Skywalker when he starts cutting
down kids and shit gets real It's awesome, especially
the last little bit where you see Anakin fighting
Obi -Wan. There's genuine hatred in his eyes.
He's like, you are going to die tonight. No nut
for another 20 years. Yeah, it's so hard for
me, though. This is the best version of so many
characters. In my opinion, this is the best Obi
-Wan we've had, because it's the most similar
that he looks to Anakin, plus he has just some
kick -ass lines. It's by far the best Anakin.
It's the best Palpatine, I think, because you
get to see just how twisted he is. It's the best
Yoda, because it's a combination of the kick
-ass Yoda and the hermit Yoda. It's the best
Maze Windu. The only one it's not the best of
is Padme. Yeah, because she's like, oh, Anakin,
I'm pregnant, but don't worry, I'm not showing
yet. I'll be showing in about 30 seconds. Her
pregnancy is so bizarre. God they did cut out
scenes that showed her pregnant earlier, but
she had a two -week pregnancy That's the one
thing we got to talk about about this film. Like
I mentioned earlier powers Why did I just think
of the push -up or the push pop commercial Oh
God don't do that Steve. Ah You know, I talked
to earlier about how the age difference between
the two of them is Now, it's not specifically
said, as far as I know, you guys can correct
me if I'm wrong, it's not specifically said how
much time has passed between episode two and
episode three, right? What's that? I think it's
about two years, I think, in the Clone Wars micro
series. Okay. The thing of it is, is yeah, she
has like a 30 second pregnancy and then I get
to drop the babies. And it's like... Holy crap,
there's no way amongst all the events that happen
in this film, from the time that she tells Anakin
she's pregnant, there's no freaking way nine
months has passed. It just doesn't seem right.
She's saying, drop it like it's hot and babies
popped out. That's all there was to it. Oh, God.
Yeah, but I think she's probably one of my least
favorite characters in this movie, but I'm with
Mike. I absolutely freaking love Anakin in this
movie. And Anakin and Hayden Christensen and
Ewan McGregor were absolutely awesome together.
I love all the homages they put into this movie
because, oh, is it when Obi -Wan confronts Grievous
the first time? He goes, well, hello there. And
it's like Alec did in episode four when he was
talking to R2. Honestly, I know that Obi -Wan
shot Grievous in the stomach, but when he goes
to rip his chestplate open, first thing I thought
was, oh, Grievous is a woman under there. Don't
touch my tit. Wow. That's what she said. There
are no words for this. Oh, but seriously if you
look at that scene and you look at Obi -Wan pulling
his chest open He pulls his privates out and
rapes Anakin. Well, it's not like he fondled
his robo balls. He just pulled open his chest
plate If they were robo balls I guess that's
true. I don't know what species. I think he's
Kalash or whatever. Well, Lucas did say in the
commentary that Grievous is some form of alien
inside a droid body. Right. Which was established
in the Expanded Universe stuff, plus the Clone
Wars micro -series. In fact, the Clone Wars cartoons
that were done by the same dude who did Samurai
Jack actually shows why Grievous coughs. One
of the Hammerhead Jedi crushes General Grievous'
chest, or it's Mace Windu, and that's why Grievous
coughs. I think it's Mace. Yeah. Try to think.
What else was... There's a lot more... prequel
stuff that that that leads up to episode 3 because
technically Grievous and all them have met before
despite in the movie saying I expected you to
be taller pussy fart so There's a lot of really
weird things that conflict here. I find the expanded
universe in episode 3 do not agree well at all
um But that's a different story for a different
day. Yeah, what about you? for me as far as favorite
character It'd probably have to be Yoda just
for the character development as far as action
I like Obi -Wan the best because we actually
see him fighting in the Clone Wars and not just
you know Oh, I'm an old hermit living out amongst
sane people Yeah What about you Mike? What was
the question again sir? Favorite character? Oh,
fucking Anakin, hands down, man. Like I said,
he was badass in this movie, particularly. Obi
-Wan was also tremendously neat. I thought Grievous
was really underdeveloped. He's like, I'm supposed
to be this badass cyborg, though evidently I
have fucking asthma. Count Dooku, I've led the
Separatists yet, I'm gonna get beat by this little
fucking crotch stain in about 30 seconds. I don't
know, there were just a lot of the characters
in this movie, I felt some of them were ridiculous.
I really like Darth Sidious 2, but I don't like
how he comes about in the way, for some reason,
force lightning causes me to turn old. I don't
know why. I don't know, there were just, there
was a lot of goofy moments with certain characters,
but one of the things that kind of surprised
me is how brutal Yoda was, because he cuts off
Commander Gree's fucking head. So it's like,
oh, dead. Actually, there's I think I screen
kept that scene where he was a commander agree
that he jumped on put his lightsaber in his chest
and and just jumped off of him. I don't that
was I thought that was just a. I can't remember.
I know what you're talking about, but I don't
know if that was a named character or not. Yeah,
I screencapped an image and I'll have to show
you guys on Facebook or whatever. It's a little
bit blurred because my stupid DVD thing on my
computer wouldn't focus right. But he basically
jumps onto a droid's, or not a droid, a clone
trooper's chest, puts his lightsaber just through
and through his chest to his back, and then jumps
off him and pulls his lightsaber out. I was like,
oh my god, that's so badass. Yeah, that was where
they're just going into the Jedi temple No, this
was in the other battle. I think it was no no
It was in the right in front of the Jedi temples
when he throws it in the chest. Oh, okay. All
right. Yeah, I Was actually surprised to see
Jimmy Smits in this movie. I Don't have a problem
with him being Bail Organa, but I just I was
very surprised at seeing him in my favorite character.
Yes Okay, I wasn't finished with my thought,
I was going to ask you that after I had finished
my thought. Thank you very much. Asshat. We're
good, we're good. Alright, alright, alright.
You alright over there, Mike? Compose. Please.
Solemn face, solemn face. Who's your least favorite
character Steve? I Like I don't know who's my
least Probably grievous just cuz he was annoying
and he had emphysema and he was wheezing But
I would have to say I like It's kind of a tie
between Yoda and the Emperor Gotcha and I'll
I say the Emperor because he's actually moving
and fucking crazy in this one compared to the
sixth movie where he's just kind of old and he's
just zapping people. So it's kind of nice to
see him actually do something in this one. And
then the fact that he's basically got cyborg
people saying, in the sense of the clones, he's
like, initiate order triple X. And he goes off
and basically sets his whole spiral downward
to crush everyone against him. Right. And Yoda's
kick ass because he just kind of is this wicked
little muppet jumping around. It was pretty cool.
Yoda was pretty cool in this one. And you see
Chewbacca. Yeah, I loved seeing the Wookiees.
That was awesome. Agreed. Well because they were
supposed to be in episode 6, but instead we got
fucking killer teddy bears Well Leave the Ewoks
alone Mike. It wouldn't have looked cool if they
did the Wookiees in ep in ep 6 anyway So I'm
glad they would tell they could do it right.
Yeah, cuz their planet looks pretty cool. Yeah
Yeah, we didn't we see a lot of it, but it looked
kind of cool in their vehicles were cool I'm
trying to think of something else actually one
of the funniest things about this and I just
posted this link in the chat One of the funniest
things about episode 3 and I just want to bring
this up now just to get it all out of the way
is episode 3 translated into a foreign language
is About the funniest thing you will ever see
there now this I think the title in Chinese Revenge
of the Sith translates to backstroke of the West
And, uh, there is one scene where you see General
Grievous, he's hovering over Anakin and Obi -Wan,
he's like, I shall add your lightsabers to my
collection, Jedi scum. Do you know what he says
in the Chinese version? Smelly boy. It gets better
when R2 is in the landing bay and he tells R2,
stay here, hack into the droid controller system.
Obi -Wan says, R2, do you is fucking? I feel
like that clip, it's funny, it's got something
with them inside of a machine and it says, he
is in my behind. One of the things that I want
to point out about this film is, obviously, like
Kevin said, there's no way you could have kitted
this up. There's nothing that you could have
done, because it has to be such a dark film,
because, like I said before, we're seeing the
evolution of Anakin into Vader. So, one of the
comedy bits that I absolutely love is everything
with R2. Where they're going to rescue Palpatine.
Because it's like are to get down here. We'll
be down here in a minute. Yeah I like when he
flies down the the the tilted ship and then lands
in the pile of droids I like when he said the
droids on fire with his jets. That was awesome.
Now. That's a legitimately cool reason for him
to fly Setting things on fire Shitting oil on
people and setting them on fire. It's good It
made sense. It's a good tactical position. I
don't know why R2 wouldn't build the fucking
blaster into himself, but hey, smelly boy. There's
always the fucking Family Guy knockoff for that.
Don't bring Family Guy into this, because I'll
kill you. God, those fucking episodes suck. That's
a detriment to Star Wars, I think. I just saw
the preview for the new one. It's a trap. It
looks mildly funny. I don't know the first the
both of them so far suck pretty harsh But I don't
know family guys for people with mental deficiencies
once again all hate mail can be sent to Blanchard
I Didn't say that you said it. It's Mike it this
week in geek .net. That's right so Apparently,
instead of the E .T.'s getting cameos, this time
around, the entire Lucas family, or well at least
Lucas himself and his three children get cameos.
Yep, and all the behind, like the producers and
all those people were all in the opera scene.
And then George's son gets one when the young
Jedi comes out. That was actually tremendously
cool because they killed him. Which was kind
of awesome. I was actually really surprised.
They actually played up the whole, oh, by the
way, kill all the younglings. That really surprised
me how dark this movie went. Plus, as a huge
nerd here, the clone troopers behind Vader are
the 501st, which is Vader's personal legion known
as Vader's Fist. That's a tremendously cool thing,
and it's such a nod to the fan community, but
there's more of this crap, so keep going. Getting
into some of the behind -the -scenes stuff and
the good, the bad, and the ugly here. Really,
I don't find anything wrong with this film whatsoever.
The only real note I took was, at the very end,
I managed to tie in Star Wars to Men in Black.
Welcome to the last helmet you'll ever wear.
Silence, I hear crickets. Oh, come on! I actually
do hear crickets now. Yeah, that's Steve's lame
attempt at Chewbacca. Wow. That was unnecessarily
mean. The ugliest thing I saw in this film was
Padme out on the balcony on that one scene. When
she's out on the one balcony of her apartment
with Anakin. She's even he's like you're so beautiful
in all this that was by far the ugliest she looked
in all three movies Yeah, she looks vaguely hideous
her hair was like sticking in 18 ,000 directions
Like I don't know if that's the effect that comes
when you take your cinnamon bun earmuffs off
if that's what you have to do to your hair after
that but She's not conditioning man. She was
so ugly in that scene and she and that between
her and Anakin That was the worst dialogue moment
of the entire movie So that's my only complaint
for episode 3, I think. It proves Anakin is a
fucking horny dog. He's like, I only love you
because you're so beautiful. Even when you're
not. I mean, does that not just scream, hey,
I'm going to get in your pants by the end of
the night? I think Anakin was actually on drugs
at that point, which is also one of the reasons
why it's so easy for the emperor to turn him
over. He's seeing things. He's all fucked up.
His head's just messed up at that point. So he
doesn't know who's beautiful. Yes. Before I let
Kevin talk about the deleted scenes, because
he actually watched them, I just kind of skimmed
through them. I actually saw them earlier, too.
Right. I find it very interesting that Lucas
wrote an early draft of the script in which a
10 -year -old Han Solo appeared in Kashyyyk.
Nice. I didn't know that. I think that would
have been jumping the shark It probably would
have been I mean having Chewie and the Wookiees
is is okay because it sets up the fact that Yoda
knows all these people, you know what I mean,
but Yeah, that probably would have been jumping
the shark big time Yeah, but the deleted scenes
on this disc are on this movie are the best out
of the prequels Right. Easily. Well, because
they actually give something actually with a
little bit of content. I mean, they show you
the death of Shaak Ti. That was crazy. It's just
really cool. I really wish they'd left that in
the movie, but... And I love the showing of Mon
Mothman, how the rebellion kind of started. And
Mon Mothman's kind of hot, I'm just saying. I
totally banger. I thought that was something
that they could have put in the whole scene with
Yego. Yoda going to Dagobah was kind of a cool
little thing to show. Unnecessary though, I can
see why they cut it. I can see why they cut that
one. I think they should have at least put in
one of, not necessarily all of the Padme scenes
in that storyline, but at least one of them that
showed Bale, Padme, Mon Mothma and that group.
At least one of them. Just so we get a sense
of that happening in the background Well plus
the fact if they'd included the scenes where
you see them trying to form the rubble alliance
you would have seen Padme is less of a fucking
idiot Right as opposed to hey Anakin guess what
you know it's just it's terrible right But there's
even more stuff cut because there was like entire
storyboard sequences. We'd see more Jedi die
die and so I don't know I think There's probably
gonna be new stuff included in the uber editions,
which I think what I do what next year on blu
-ray. Yeah So I'm curious to see what was allegedly
left on the cutting room floor Coming to a 3d
near you Yeah, although I will say this is the
movie I'm looking the most forward to in 3d.
Can you imagine the fucking Mustafar sequence
in 3d? That's gonna be fucking badass. Yeah,
that's gonna be Oh, I did remember one other
moment that I kind of had a problem with and
that is when Mace Windu shows up to arrest Palpatine
and the two supposed Jedi's get killed like bitches.
Oh boy, I'm glad you brought that up. Like, what
are you kidding me? Master Jedi, I pointed my
lightsaber at you. You just happened to be in
the way. Yeah. For people who sit on the Jedi
Council, and these guys have huge backstories,
once again, in the Expanded Universe, these guys
would have taken motherfucking him apart at the
seams. Yeah, that was just, there was, what was
there, three or four Jedi in that scene and one
- There was five. Five. Yeah, there was - You
gotta be freaking kidding me. Yeah, I'm sorry,
I mean - That was as weak, that was as weak as
General Grievous's two arms coming off in one
second of that battle. And why the hell didn't
they bring a battalion, like, at least a couple
clones with them? Okay, while the lightsabers
didn't work, shoot the motherfucker! I'm just
saying, I mean, there's so much wrong with that
scene. And then Anakin is like, oh, well, um,
I guess I'm gonna turn to the dark side now,
so I'm gonna bend to your will. Hey, party on.
It all happened so quickly. I mean, that's another
thing to do with this movie. Anakin's fall to
the dark side. It seems a little too convenient.
Hey, I can save your wife. Really? Yeah. Want
to help me kill innocent people? Sure. Well,
and I think that there was another deleted scene
that would have helped on that a little bit.
There was a scene, one of those Padme scenes
when she actually comes before Palpatine to try
to kind of... you know she has this like petition
with all the signatures and or whatever about
you know trying to get something past that hill
return power center center and uh... but anakin
standing off to the side you can kind of see
the tension there and and it i thought it helped
a little with his turning but then they cut that
so it's like i i found a lot of times uh... what
lucas would do is he would have these massive
fight scenes and these chasing that would take
up a lot of time like just look at like a podracing
scene or look at like some of these different
fighting scenes that are very long and in order
to make these long fight and chase scenes he
would cut out key character development and dialogue
parts because he's a big fan of oh we should
be able to tell the story just visually well
sometimes you need a little bit of freaking dialogue
Yeah, you need a little bit of context, because
the scene where all the Jedi die, where it shows
them on different planets as Order 66 is being
executed, you could have made that so much more
dramatic, because one thing that's explained
in the Expanded Universe, when we go on Felucia
seeing Ayla Secula get shot on the big fungal
planet, the clones shot her in a specific way,
so she wouldn't suffer. They specifically did
that. It's like we like her we got our duty to
the Republic. So let's put her down humanely
Whereas on my Gito with Chiari Mundy those guys
fucking hated him They made sure it was brutal,
right? So there could have been a lot more they're
given context to That's true Let's see here do
we have anything else on the deleted scenes guys
Those are yeah, I think I touched on all the
deleted scenes pretty well They're the by far
the best ones to watch if you haven't watched
the deleted scenes You should watch them just
to see Shakti that killed yes Funniest thing
about Revenge of the Sith actually the first
time I saw this was through the leaked work print
I Didn't get a chance to see that actually any
other Copy of the movie leaked into a peer -to
-peer file sharing networks just hours after
opening in theaters. The movie was a time -stamped
work print suggesting it may have come from within
the industry rather than from someone who videotaped
an advanced screening. Eight people were later
charged with copyright infringement and distributing
material illegally. I don't know if it was the
actual leaked work print I saw. I saw something
from a person -to -person sharing or peer -to
-peer sharing thing. I'm so wrong. And whatever.
As far as... Other parts? What? Anybody have
a favorite part in this one? Mustafar battle,
battle of the heroes. That's it, that's it. I
was glad you said that because if anyone said
any other part they're retarded. That's the best
dialogue in the entire Star Wars franchise between,
in my opinion, between Obi -Wan and Anakin. Best
lines ever, best way, the best sequence, it's
just epic. Right. I will agree the Obi -Wan Anakin
battle was probably one of the best scenes of
the film. I actually really like the helmet going
down and you see his first breath under the helmet.
I like that a lot. Again, the whole thing with
Anakin and Padme just... Yeah, it wasn't as bad
in this one as it was in the other one, but there
was still some pretty bad scenes with it But
like I said, that's just because Lucas doesn't
know how to do romance one of the things that
always bugged me about this movie is the droid
on Paulus Massa that the medical droid is like
she's was she's lost the will to live you just
had two fucking kids Build the fucking Republic
fix your husband. Oh, no, I'm a pussy time to
die Well, she couldn't fix your husband because
he was on fucking fire Un -fucking -fire! He
used the Force to suck her life away and put
himself into Vader. He used the Force to suck
something out of her. That's what she said. Oh,
man, imagine the things you could do. You could...never
mind. Anyway, um... Only you would think of that,
Dodd. Dark Force, you will see. Oh, believe me,
if I had Force powers, horrible things would
happen. But the thing... That's what bugged me
about though, because Padme's supposed to be
a mother. And here's big plot hole. How can Leia
remember her mother if she just like, oh hey
mom, guess what? Oh, time to die. That is a good
point. The only thing that I'll say about that
is... Nice vag, time to die. Sorry. No, I was
gonna fucking go, you moron. People on fucking
Facebook, assholes. Anyways. Fly, Laker. Do you
win? Shut up. Shut up, Yoda. The thing about
Leia and Padme is that the droid that was delivering
the babies out of Padme showed them to her for
a brief moment. So... Maybe we could argue, that's
a nitpick. Maybe the force remembered her. Maybe,
and that's the all coming cop out, I guess. Another
good thing about that last battle scene is that
Obi -Wan picks up Anakin's lightsaber and then
it ties into him having it to give to Luke later.
I kind of thought that was a nice little touch.
Although it's not the same lightsaber because
he does slightly rebuild. If you look at Anakin's
F3 saber 2 is one he has in F4 There are some
significant changes to it more specifically on
the strip the activator switch and some things
on the side there But I'm a huge nerd and know
that Obi -Wan may have restored it back to his
Jedi version That's another good reason, too.
I just remember another thing, another moment.
I love when Yoda walks in and throws those two
Imperial guards to the floor. Yeah, that was
pretty awesome. He's like, yep, die. That was
pretty fucking cool. That was one of the best
Yoda moments. I think one of the best Yoda moments
was when he was actually fighting the Emperor
with the lightning going between their hands.
I thought that was fairly cool. That was very
Dragon Ball Z -ish. Yeah, nine thousand um, but
Overall though there were some really good fight
scenes and that's the only one I thought that
really dragged on and almost felt unnecessary
is the chase scene between General Grievous is
by my toy at target for 1999 creature and The
Boga I hated that part Hated hated that part,
but I did like commander Cody. I thought he was
a nice addition to the series Despite, you know,
well gotta shoot you in the back now, buddy time.
I like them, too Yeah, he was cool. I'm trying
to think of what else I can really mention about
this. Plus, they show that the clones have more
personality, like there's Cody, there's Oddball,
there's Commander Gree. Even the target clone
had a name because he was the guy that killed
Stas Ali on the speeder bike, stuff like that.
And they also show some emerging Imperial tech
because the clone turbo tank would eventually
turn into the Juggernaut. The ATPT would evolve
into the Scout Walker. Right. And you just, you
see the transition from the technology of the
old movies into the new ones, like you can see
how things work. The Death Star and everything.
What did you guys think of the Death Star and
Grand Moff Tarkin? Tarkin looked like a fucking
zombie. I completely missed Tarkin, but I saw
the Death Star and we kind of glossed over that
in episode, the episode two discussion that,
you know, the whole point of, of Dooku trying
to escape was to save... the plans of the Death
Star and then of course we see it again here.
It's a nice nod. Yeah. I don't know, Grand Moff
Tarkin looks a little weird. I mean, I know he's
supposed to be a younger version. I guess the
only thing is is that, you know, the Death Star
plans. How much time is it supposed to be like
20 years between this and a little less than
20 years between episode three and episode four?
Which means in theory they're building the second
Death Star about six months after they finish
this one Yeah, I mean it took them a long ass
time to build this one And the fact that nobody
found out about it. Yeah fucking right I'm just
saying and they supposedly built the the second
Death Star and they built part or they had parts
of it built in this Installation called the ma
which is near Kessel and all this other shit
I don't know, I find episode 3 creates so many
problems with the new movies in some ways, because
some of it conflicts with established canon,
conflicts with stuff in the expanded universe,
and then you get games which build up upon this,
such as The Force Unleashed, and then it gets
even more convoluted with The Force Unleashed
2. It's just everything post episode 3 leading
into episode 4. It's really bad territory to
start walking. Yeah. Because you can screw up
so many things. Oh, yeah. This is the only Star
Wars film to receive a PG -13 rating because
of the sci -fi violence and some intense images,
namely for the scene in which Darth Vader is
set aflame by lava. I'm sure it had nothing to
do with the kids dying. Well, it doesn't say
that here, but yeah, I dunno. Again, soundtrack
stuff just amazing. Sure, probably some of the
most memorable themes of the prequel trilogy
namely battle of the heroes is a Fantastic bit
of music in this overall Even just hearing Vader's
theme is another cool piece of kind of music
from this as well I'm actually just looking at
my ep3 soundtrack right now trying to give you
some other stuff here Another one is Palpatine's
teachings, which I think is either in the office
scene or when when they're at the weird opera
house thing. Another neat thing about this movie,
kind of continuing on with sound, is this is
the best the sound design I think has ever been
in the series. Just listen to everything that's
kind of going on around you and you'll be really
impressed. Yeah, everything was the best. I mean,
all the visual things were the best that it's
been in all six movies. You know, all the digital...
Compared to the the real life characters the
best blending that they had out of all six the
sounds the best out of all six It's just it's
hard to beat Mike fell asleep. No, I didn't fall
asleep Just checking But yeah, it's just the
sound is that's one of the things I noticed the
most about this film in particular the sound
design with the effects and the music The effects
didn't really overpower the music, but they're
still there in full volume. It's just amazing.
Kevin, do you have any trivia for this one? Just
one. At the very opening scene when they have
the massive space battle and they have the one
Star Destroyer type ship there. They're basically
shooting all kinds of crap at it. There is an
actual kitchen sink thrown at it. Wow. And and
one thing a lot of people don't notice is actually
that space battle quote -unquote Actually only
happens in the upper atmosphere because some
people like say there's no smoke in space That's
because they're not technically in space. They're
suborbital. So smoke and fire still work the
thing about before you go on Mike the thing about
that was Lucas said in the commentary that he
wanted to show many different types of Coruscant
so That's why technically that battle isn't in
space it is in the upper atmosphere because he
wanted it to look like a completely different
space battle or Battle in the air, whatever the
hell you want to call it Yes I don't know. I
guess one of the things I did like about this
movie and this will go to visual effects and
props is I, once again, as I mentioned in the
beginning of the show, I have a very expensive
replica lightsaber from this. And if you look
at it compared to the episode four saber, which
Obi -Wan will eventually use, it's really cool
how you can see how parts have degraded, parts
have changed. Like, something that's referred
to in the fandom as the pineapple. Obi -Wan saber
which is the part just above the activator switch
leading up to the emitter shroud is this weird
porous material which it has he taken from I
think like a hand grenade or something like that
and you see just how the prop has evolved like
Obi -Wan saber in f4 Is the junkiest thing you
can imagine mind you I think it's the most badass
looking outside of his episode one saber But
it's really neat just to see how that's evolved
and also seeing how the clone troopers armor
has evolved from the t -visor into the more streamlined
kind of clone Stormtrooper look to you see how
the technology has also moved on like I mentioned
earlier with the like ATP teas and stuff like
that You see just a lot of how the universe is
going to change, which I think is something to
be credited to the production team. They started
to realize, hey, everything can't be shiny in
the future. Maybe we should tone it down. Also,
look at the stuff they have for the Wookiees.
There actually was a huge, like, 18 or something
part web documentary, which is included on the
Revenge of the Sith 2 -disc set, where they go
into that and they explain how the weapons were
designed to look organic and stuff like that,
so that's really neat. I don't know, there was
just a lot of neat things done with this movie
in terms of production. There's even a book out,
I think it comes from DK Publishing, I'm not
100 % sure, it's very expensive, but it's called
Dressing the Galaxy. They give you fabric samples
of each of the costumes in this movie. And that's
tremendously cool just to feel what Padme's dress
was made of, to hear what Palpatine's cloak was
made out of, stuff like that too. And one of
the huge things about this movie, I guess to
kind of continue on along this thread, and I
know Kevin, I want you to jump in on this, the
marketing and the promotion for this thing is
huge, as we talked about the Target exclusives
for this. This movie also came out during a celebration
year, which is, known as Civ, or sorry, Celebration,
I think it was, what, was it five for this one,
Kevin, or three? C3, three. Yeah, because they
had the C3 Vader, which would talk and say lunch
from the movie. So there were so many websites
selling crap like this. Yeah, this is where we
had the lava figures, obviously. Yeah, like there
were just so many figures coming out of nowhere.
I mean, there's even a fucking... Christmas Vader
I remember vaguely There are also shit tons of
video games. There was the f3 video game across
multiple platforms There was Star Wars Republic
Commando, which is a direct tie -in to this game
where you see Grievous escape to Kashyyyk and
you fight the Magna Guards. It's Star Wars Battlefront
2 developed by Pandemic Studios, which was unfortunately
no longer around. It was told the story of the
501st leading all the way up from Geonosis to
here. Or sorry, leading up to the Battle of Hoth,
where the last clones were dying off. Um, yeah,
there's this was a marketing juggernaut. I remember
slurpee cups. In fact, I'm drinking it at the
Vader right now, actually. Nice. That sounds
so kinky and wrong. Oh, give it to me, Anakin.
I want your man juice. Where did you get that
slurpee cup at Arby's? No, no, sadly not. I had
to go to McDonald's first. No, I got these at
7 -Eleven. And RG flew me there. Um, so after
that, um, I think what else I remember there
being not many food Promotions though not as
many there wasn't as many like fast food restaurants
behind this as there was in episode one But the
other there was Burger King Yeah, but the other
merchandise as far as novelty stuff was just
as big if not bigger Yeah, because you had friggin,
you had like pencil cases, toys out the ass,
birthday party supplies. I remember there was
a store in Canada known as Becker's or Max Mart
or something like that. One of the smaller convenience
chains had if you bought a Slurpee cup, you got
a Star Wars poster. which I haven't seen, it's
them crossing the sabers at the Battle of the
Hero with a Jedi logo above them. I haven't seen
that poster too often. And I've been actually
trying to replace it for years. Another thing
that should be mentioned is that Drew Struzan,
who drew the artwork, for all the movies and
all the posters has done another fantastic job
with this one, and they're actually, I think,
I got a book from Dave from Twig called The Art
of Drew Struzan, and I think the episode three
poster's the best the series has ever looked.
Oh yeah? Yeah, I'd have to agree. I'm trying
to think, is there anything else, Kevin, I may
have missed in terms of collecting or exclusives?
Oh my god, there was a Star Wars... Star Wars
weekend at Disneyland, too. Yeah, there was a
Star Wars... I think there was a line of M &M
type things. There was. M &M figures or whatever
that were all the Star Wars ones. There was...
Oh my god, there was just so much stuff. I mean,
I stayed almost strictly to just the action figures,
but... i mean this was a you got to think about
this to them at least the people that are trying
to make the money off of it this could be possibly
their last big hurrah as far as you know one
of these major pictures to go out and they were
trying to capitalize on a big time you know without
you this is the last of the movies you know unless
they were somehow going to be something that
we didn't know about down the line so you know
this is this is their chance to get as much money
for now and then you know obviously they're gonna
have to rely on the fandom to keep buying stuff
later but this was kind of the last push for
the masses really quick before we move on I want
to talk a little bit about the box office and
the awards and nominations and all that stuff
I'm sorry. My hatred of the Harry Potter franchise
is well known, but I'm sorry. There's no way
that this film should have came in second to
fucking Goblet of Fire. That's ridiculous. Mike,
you haven't seen it. You can't even say that,
man. That's ridiculous. No Star Wars film should
come second to fucking Harry Potter. That's a
completely ignorant statement. I'm sorry. You
need to see them to compare them. My problem
with the awards is that this is the only Star
Wars movie that did not get nominated for visual
effects Which is really weird, but then again
when you look at the movies that came out that
year though Did it deserve it? I think maybe
this movie design deserves an award in terms
of sound design It just seems weird because it
was the best digital effects out of all the Star
Wars movies for it not to I'm you're right It
depends on who they were going against and what
the other ones were going against But it it was
the best visual Star Wars for it to be the one
not nominated just seems off But it was going
against Chronicles of Narnia For visual effects.
I can't remember what else it was going off against.
Maybe one of the pirates movies might have been
out that time Yeah, I think it was at world's
end was out at that point. Maybe I think so I
mean it did it was going against some some tough
competition, but that's the one that I would
have thought it would have got was visual effects
and didn't even get nominated, but it did get
Nominated for best makeup and a few other things,
but that was the only, I think that was the only
Academy Award I got nominated for Best Makeup.
Yeah. So as far as the IGN crew, one to four.
Steve, what do you give episode three? Four out
of four. Mike? Definitely four. Kevin? Four and
a half. There's no fucking for easy for yeah
same here there are multiple versions of the
DVD there was a couple of exclusive DVDs at different
stores and of course we have the re -release
in the prequel trilogy box set The novelization
I find very interesting uh... because they use
uh... the novel includes many uh... minor details
for example during the battle of chorus on anakin's
call signs read five which is obviously a reference
to lose call sign but that was kind of cool uh...
Mike, do you have anything to say about the video
game itself or anything? Um, I think the some
of the best games that the Star Wars franchise
has ever produced I think have some of them have
actually come out of F3 like said Star Wars Battlefront
2 is one of the biggest selling Star Wars games
of all time You also got Star Wars Republic Commando.
It's established an entire sub -genre of a Star
Wars military shooter there was also I'm trying
to remember what else in terms of kind of video
games were well it basically F3 has opened up
the door to the entire Clone Wars franchise.
I mean there's Star Wars lightsaber duels which
came out for the Wii last year, Star Wars Force
Unleashed which takes place after episode 3,
Star Wars Force Unleashed 2 which is like I said
like that that whole game is built upon what
this is established invader having a secret apprentice
as well. The Star Wars RTSs I think Empire at
War came out around the same time but I'm not
100 % sure not a very good game if I remember
correctly. I don't know Kevin is there anything
that I'm maybe missing? I don't So I'm not I
can't we haven't talked about it at all I don't
remember when they all came out but the as far
as the monopoly in the life and the trivia pursuits
and every board game coming in, you know, Stratego,
Risk, I mean, I think every board game on the
planet came out in a Star Wars version throughout
these three films. I don't know how many of them
came specifically at the end here, but there
was definitely a lot of cool games like that
to get your hands on. Yeah, and I don't know,
like I said, one of the best games, despite being
a side scrolling Fighter is the episode three
adaptation there actually is an alternate ending
where Vader kills the Emperor and takes control
of the Empire And there's even exclusive stuff
on the disc where you get to see how things would
have turned out. It's a really well done game,
all things considered. But, I don't know, I mean,
E3 was obviously their last big push into the
digital medium, what you could really do with
it. And I think E3 creates the most conflict
where you can really do things. There's also
untold side stories here, because you see through
the Clone Wars television show now, Anakin had
an apprentice, Ahsoka. who is Hannah Montana
with a fucking lightsaber, but regardless of
that fact though, what happened to her, she's
probably dead when you look at Order 66, considering
how many of the Jedi were killed, but there's
even a Star Wars comic called, I can't remember
what the hell it was called, but it was called
Jedi Purge, and it featured Vader, where he goes
around and kills a lot of the Jedi himself personally.
So there's a lot in there. Yeah, I remember that
story. That would have been cool to see too.
Yeah, like, there's so much that Ep 3 gave us
in terms of the expanded universe. Like I said,
the problem is with that though, it conflicts
with so much stuff, and the fact that the Clone
Wars series on television is still not finished.
Now they're bringing back fucking Darth Maul
with Count Dooku in the series. I wonder what
kind of problems that's gonna create. I know,
the problem is Lucas signs off on too many things
established to canon, and now with talk of a
new 7 -8 -9... What's it gonna do to the expanded
universe, including the Truce of Akura, the Courtship
of Princess Leia, Dark Empire by Timothy Zahn,
or sorry, the Thrawn Trilogy rather, and then
the New Jedi Academy stuff with like Kevin J.
Anderson, or even the legacy of the Force that
happens a hundred years after all this shit has
been done. There's gonna be so many things that
are gonna be awesome and suck at the same time.
I know there's always been the talk of the seven
eight nine and I know it was always you know
the three trilogy etc etc I would be much more
interested in even going back and seeing more
previous stuff than to see what happens with
Luke and Han later To me that story ended and
I don't care what happened after episode 6. I
would much rather see the beginnings of Palpatine,
Mace Windu as a younger person and all the beginnings
of those people. I don't know, maybe that's just
me. I mean, Palpatine himself is essentially
seen as far as younger Palpatine, like kid Palpatine.
No, I mean the beginning of him as a Sith Lord.
Oh. His background and the more of the Jedi's
background and stuff like that compared to I
don't want to see Luke again See, I don't I don't
I don't think you would see the rise of Palpatine
because technically we've seen it I mean, I don't
really mean the rise of it. I just mean the background
of it Right, but I don't think you would even
see that because he had to keep the I mean even
in episode one We know he has you know Strange
intentions, you know what I mean? So We know
that eventually he is going to become the Emperor
at some point. So I mean you kind of see the
whole background of it Yeah, you don't see how
he got started but I mean he tells the background
story about his master because he was the one
that killed the guy that knew how to Cure people
Right. So all right. Well, I think that's gonna
do it for us. This has been one extremely long
fucking Facebook looking record. So we're gonna
go to a little outtake that Kevin and I had recorded
where I basically screw up who died in episode
one. We'll be back after this. In a galaxy far
away, Naboor was under an attack And I thought
me and Qui -Gon Jinn could talk the Federation
into maybe cutting them a little slack But their
response, it didn't thrill us They locked the
doors and tried to kill us We escaped from that
gas The Medjarjar in Bosnass We took a bungle
from the scene And we went to feed to see the
queen We all wound up on Tatooine That's where
we found this boy Oh my, my this here Anakin
guy Maybe Vader someday later now He's just a
small fry He left his home and kissed his mommy
goodbye Saying soon I'm gonna be a Jedi Soon
I'm gonna be a Jedi Did you know this junkyard
slave isn't even 14 yeah Amidala wanted to I
frankly would have liked to stay We all fought
in that epic war And it wasn't long at all before
Little hotshot flew his plane and saved the day
And in the end some gungans died Some ships blew
up and some pilots fried A lot of folks were
croaking The battle droids were broken And the
Jedi I admire most Met up with Darth Maul and
now he's toast Though I'm still here and he's
a ghost I guess I'll train this boy And I was
singing My, am I this here Anakin guy? Maybe
Vader's some Someday later now he's just a small
fry And he left his home and kissed his mommy
goodbye Saying soon I'm gonna be a Jedi Soon
I'm gonna be a Jedi We were singing My my this
here Anakin guy Maybe Vader someday later now
he's just a small fry Goodbye, saying soon I'm
gonna be a Jedi But no, I'm at the Gungan battle
scene where Anakin's up in the little starship
thing and he's, you know, he's crashed and they're
- And I just watched all three of these this
summer. Obi -Wan just died and everything else,
so I'm like halfway to the end of episode one.
I hope Obi -Wan didn't die in that. I'm not -
fuck. Fuck, you know what I meant. Yeah, I did.
Quigon, there you go. Whatever. You know what
I meant. Ryan's with Obi -Wan. Whatever. If he
dies, then it's a whole different movie. It's
a whole different trilogy. It's like they went
into a fucking TARDIS. How many times can this
guy die? Yeah, exactly. Oh god. You know what
I would have loved to have seen? I'd have loved
to have seen all six of these movies in celebrity
deathmatch style and just in claymation. That
would be awesome. I don't know why your brain
comes up with that stuff. It would be cool. Shut
up. Sometimes you amaze me. Be voicey, seriose
Final thoughts on the prequels. Mike, sum it
up for us. Well, it's hard to compare these to
the original trilogy because frankly, in some
ways, they are not as good because it comes from
a different era of filmmaking. George Lucas,
as a director, has accomplished some great things
with these prequels. However, though... The problem
is I think these were left maybe for too long,
waiting 25 years between your original stories
and the ones you have now. It's good in some
ways, bad in others. I think the prequels should
be appreciated for what they are, but they're
not necessarily necessary viewing for everybody
because you can enjoy the original trilogy without
seeing these. There's enough material in the
original trilogy to stand up to these easily,
but... As someone who's grew up in a new era
of, like I said, filmmaking, etc., looking at
the prequels as the beginning of the Star Wars
trilogy gives someone a different view of how
everything goes together. There's been several
articles written about this in several major
magazines explaining should you watch episodes
1 -6 or episodes 4 -5, 4 -5 -6, then 1 -2 -3.
So... I would say overall, the prequels, they're
a different kind of movie. They're still entertaining
for what they are. They do give different sides
to the characters, but if you expect them to
be as good as the original Star Wars movies to
accomplish what they did years ago, they succeed
in some ways, they fail in others. But you probably
should still see them. Episode 3 being the best
of the bunch. Episode 2 being significantly less
expansive in scope compared to F3 in terms of
what happens. And episode 1 is how the story
began. It is kind of a character insight when
you look and see how Anakin has come from being
this innocent little boy to becoming Darth Vader,
Obi -Wan from being a reckless young Padawan
to the respected leader of the Jedi Order armies.
So it's interesting to see how everything comes
about, but View at your own risk, especially
if you're a snob about these movies because you
may be disappointed in what you find. Yeah, yeah
