About this Episode

The team discusses the 1987 Mel Brooks sci-fi parody, Spaceballs. They break down the film's fast-paced humor, iconic scenes like the desert combing and the Schwartz battle, and the impressive improvisational skills of the cast. The hosts also share their thoughts on the characters, the infamous merchandising, and the film's lasting legacy as a standout entry in the comedy genre.

You're listening to the deep cast radio network

of podcast There it is planet true idiot underneath

the air shield 10 ,000 years of fresh air Once

we kidnap the princess we can force her father

King Roland to give us the combination to the

air shield thereby destroying planet Druidia

and saving planet Spaceball. Everybody got that?

Spaceball is the move. Princess Vespa spaceship

within range, sir. Good. What's going on? Either

the Fourth of July or someone's trying to kill

us! Now we will show her who is in charge of

this galaxy. If you will not give me the combination

to the air shield, Dr. Slotkin will give your

daughter back to you. We're all known! Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

You? I am the keeper of a greater magic. The

force? No, the Schwartz. Avoid capture on a distant

planet. Help us to comb the desert, you hear

me? Comb the desert! Found anything yet? We ain't

found... Battle the entire space ball army. My

hair! He shoved my hair! Holy! And escape the

clutches of Dark Helmet. I see your fortress

is as big as mine. Abandon ship, proceed to escape

lines. How the hell's an animal to see that?

When does this happen in the movie? Give me ball!

Space ball. Hello and welcome to episode 75 .5

of M -Wire brought to you by the KeyCast Radio

Network. I am Ryo, Steve, Joe, and Mike and joining

me is Steve Megatron. Hello. Goodbye. And Kevin,

I'm Jonas Ola Thompson. Hello. Aloha. Okay then.

Today we're going to be discussing Spaceballs,

and this will be a much shorter episode than

the two -parter of episode 75. What? What are

those? Oh my god. Those are the infamous Star

Wars films. Yes, exactly. And it's a good thing

I decided to break up a franchise. Wait, what

was that? Cuz I said it's a good thing I decided

to break up another franchise come later in M

wires history cuz Episode 100 would have probably

been an 11 hour podcast I thought you were gonna

say it was a good idea that you decided to break

up the Star Wars franchise No, no, no, I actually

wouldn't mind if it was one thing one five hour

thing that though. It's not so bad He talked

George Lucas into cutting it in half No Tell

it in two different stories. So Steve, what are

you up to? Quite a many of voice acting projects

lately. Not just the fan versions of Beast Wars,

but I've been doing some Batman voiceover as

miscellaneous bad guys. A lot of just random

stuff like that and trying to get more contacts

so that I can try and actually get paid to do

voiceovers and learn techniques for it. That's

mostly what I've been doing lately other than

working. What about you, Kevin? Oh, my goodness.

Besides doing a few telecast episodes, which

everybody should go check those out, as far as

behind the voice actors, I just got done with

a marathon. project on the Muppet Show. So yeah,

I added basically all the characters that I could

find for it, which numbered it up to 236 characters.

So that was a lot of picture work and voice actor

assigning. Other than that, what else have I

done? I just added the two Cinderella sequels

to the page. That was about it. I think recently

I haven't done a whole lot of work over there

lately because I've been busy with other stuff,

but yeah Podcasting in behind the voice actors.

That's my internet life right now At least you

have internet finally. Yes, I did I am back on

the internet Oh, yeah, we need to bring something

up this episode won't actually air until this

coming Saturday December I don't even know what

the hell the damn date is for Saturday December

11th That's when this episode will air, but go

back and listen to Tooncast, episode 82, because

for some strange reason, and Steve can attest

to this, because even though Steve wasn't available

at that episode, it also happened in his state,

for some strange reason the other night, the

whole northeastern or midwest -north thing for

the country had nothing but instant messenger

access for internet. Yeah, my whole internet

was out, but the power of force let me use Skype.

I had the same issue. I wasn't online at all

that particular day. It was just by luck, too,

because I don't really remember the power or

the cable going out. I had been trying the Internet

and the web browsers for a number of hours and

I never had even thought of trying to open Skype

because if Internet's not working, Skype's not

going to work. Just out of sheer chance, I'm

like, well, I'll just try to open up Skype. Everybody

was green that was online and I'm like and my

thing was green. I'm like Hmm, let's type the

message Then Mike responds to me. I'm like what?

Yeah The Schwartz was most definitely with you.

Yeah. Well, I was like in a Jedi vortex of power

through Skype I don't know what that means, but

that's what And we recorded the whole episode

with no internet and then as soon as the episode

ended I had internet back Yeah, um, I've just

been doing the same stuff podcasting everything

else watching movies stuff like that So, yeah

What obsessing over cars Hey, it's a good movie.

It's a good one. We're not bringing that shit

into him work. Damn it No, it couldn't. It's

a cartoon. It belongs 65 years in the future.

Okay. I'll start saving up for that. Cars is

good, but it's not top of the line for Pixar.

Well, alright. Well, like I said before, and

I've said this multiple times, I'm getting tired

of fucking saying this. I never said Cars was

the best Pixar film. I said it was one of the

better Pixar films and it was a good Pixar film.

The best ones for me are the Toy Story franchise.

I don't think anybody can disagree with that.

I'm not going to say Cars is excellent, either.

I'm not going to say Ratatouille is, you know.

Ratatouille is complete and utter shit, literally.

But it won a whole hell of a lot more awards

than Cars. Whatever. Anyway, to set the stage

today, Spaceballs is a 1987 American science

fiction parody film co -written by and directed

by Mel Brooks. It also features John Candy, Rick

Moranis, Daphne Zynga, Bill Pullman, and the

voice of Joan Rivers. When did you guys first

see Spaceballs, Steve? No, I did not see it in

theater because I was one too young. You're only

a year old at this point. Exactly. I was just

a little baby. He was a Padawan. Not even yet.

My shorts were strong though. Oh God. No, I saw

it with my dad probably in the late 90s. I'm

not really sure when I saw that. I have absolutely

no idea. I know I didn't see it in the theater.

I guess early 90s. I don't know if it was on

DHS or if I just saw it on TV somehow. Oh, I

actually know. I do remember now. It just came

to me, just this one second. I saw it in my cousin's

house for the first time. All my cousins are

older than me. I'm the youngest of our generation

and the cousins and I have like many, many, many

cousins. But I was at my one cousin's house and

there was like four, five, six of us, and they

were watching Spaceballs, because since they

were all older, they knew it a lot better than

I did at the time, since I was only six when

it came out, or however old I was. But yeah,

I do remember seeing it with them. It's all coming

back to me. Yes, I remember seeing this on TV

and on VHS as well. I think I saw it when I was

eight, a year after it came out. And I cannot

believe this movie is rated PG. I just cannot

believe this movie is rated PG with everything

that's in this film I know back in the 80s the

standard was GPG or R there was no PG -13 yet

or it just started or whatever I don't know exactly

when they implemented the PG -13 rating so but

yeah I'm surprised this film is not rated R yeah

I am and I'm not I mean I am in some ways but

Seems like a lot of times at least back then

maybe that comedies could get away with more

stuff or a slap this type of comedy Maybe not

just a generic comedy, but a comedy that's a

complete like spoof type thing It seems like

they're able to get away with more because it's

all kind of Tongue -cheek like I don't know if

it seems like some of those movies are able to

get away with more ratings wise Yeah So I guess

who wants to summarize the plot here No, no,

I don't. Because you make me do everything in

time. Yeah, exactly. Well, you gotta pull your

weight around here anyways, so. Oh my god. Steve

wants to. No, Steve's too tired. Yes, the little

pot of space balls is that it is a spoof on Star

Wars. That's your plot. You got a dark helmet.

Yeah, you got Lone Star and what's his name,

Barf? Yeah, it's John Candy's infamous role.

Yeah, Lone Star and Barf, which is kind of like

Han Solo and Chewbacca and they're trying to

rescue the Princess Vespa or Princess Leia from

Dark Helmet or Darth Vader. And that's basically

the whole plot, really. I mean, it's their attempts

to rescue the princess. I like yogurt. With a

lot of funny shit thrown in. Yeah. I would say

that Lone Star is a combination of Han and Luke.

I could definitely see that in the role. Because

there's no way that they could have fit a Han

and Luke role into this film. And since, you

know, we find out at the end that he is the prince,

he is Chosen One or whatever the hell, plus he

uses the damn Schwartz saber. Han Solo never

touched a lightsaber in his life, so Pullman's

character is a combination between Han and Luke,

which I don't mind. A lot more Han, though. Oh,

yeah, no, no. Yeah, definitely. Luke more in

action. Luke was a lot more action -wise, but

the whole attitude and demeanor of the actual

actor is all Han. Oh, yeah. Yeah, I completely

agree. I was extremely shocked, because before

I had seen it, before I rewatched it for this

recording, I hadn't seen it in, I don't know,

a couple of years. And, you know, everybody knows

my memory sucks a lot of the time. And I completely

didn't remember from my childhood at all that

Michael Winslow is in this. I love Michael Winslow.

I love that scene. He's so great. Yes, just amazing.

He's probably the most talented one in this film

as far as like audio effects. Well, he's probably

one of the most talented people ever for audio

effects. Yeah, exactly. I mean, there is no contest

there. Yeah, I mean, it's just I could listen

to him do stuff. You could listen to him imitate

Star Wars. Yeah, I mean, I could just sit there

and listen to him just do whatever just for hours

and be entertained. Yeah, exactly. Oh, and I

forgot to mention, but obviously a company in

this whole group is the Megamade, which is a

takeoff kind of a C -3PO. I forgot to mention

her. You mean Dot and Matrix. Megamade was the

giant thing Spaceport One turned into. That's

what I meant, Dot. Yeah, Dot and Matrix, voiced

by Joan Rivers. Yeah. That was kind of disturbing.

I agree. God. And I swear, Barf got it right

when he's like, what's going on? Are we sinking?

Are we going down with the ship? What the hell's

going on? Because her damn virgin alarm does

sound like the submarine dive or submarine in

trouble alarm sound. Yeah. Oh, God. There's so

many good parts of this movie, though. So many

good parts, but that was a character I could

completely have done without. No, I agree. That's

easily my least favorite character. Yeah. What

was your favorite part, Steve? I would have to

say when probably Lone Star learns how to use

the Schwartz and he's fighting Lord Helmet and

they've both got their hands around their crotch

and making their Schwartz grow. Which is, I mean,

that in itself is disturbing, but it was funny.

Oh yeah. Just because you get the reference they

were trying to make. Yeah, that is definitely

a classic part. I just like the Lord Helmet character

because he's in this mask that he clearly does

not need to wear, but he wears it for the effect

of it, even though he's one of the shortest people

there. And then he ends up taking the hood, you

know, the faceplate off a lot. because he's like,

ugh, I couldn't breathe in there. Or hot coffee,

coffee is hot, ow. Yeah. That's just the whole

Schwartz scene, obviously, is kind of iconic.

This is probably the most famous scene out of

this whole thing. I really like a couple scenes.

I like the scene when they first get to yogurt,

and when he's just explaining things, and when

they go into the film's merchandising campaign.

That's great. you know just great and then I

but I think my favorite scene is one of two it's

either when they're combing the desert just because

that cracks me up when they're out there literally

combing it yeah there's like stormtroopers out

there with an actual huge comb combing the desert

I love that and I love when they uh when they

beam him up or transport him or whatever you

call it and he's and his ass is behind yeah he's

facing the wrong way his top half's not facing

the same way as his bottom half Because you know

that's something you always think when you see

movies are you like what happens if they screw

stuff up? Yeah Beam me up snotty. Yeah, but there's

so many great scenes I mean, there's also the

scene when dark helmets playing with the action

figures. Yeah, he's like I told you to knock

first. Did you see anything? No, I didn't see

you playing with your dolls again or your toys

or whatever he says Yeah, I actually I looked

this I actually I meant to look this up on eBay

I guess I'll have to do it while we're recording

here I meant to look up and see if they actually

made those toys. No, they didn't. They couldn't.

Damn. They had an agreement with George Lucas.

They couldn't make any merchandise for the movie.

Are you serious? Yeah. That was kind of a, because

Mel Brooks actually contacted George Lucas before

this movie was even made or before it was done

because he wanted to make sure he wasn't making

him mad or offending him and whatnot. And I think

Lucas basically was like, no, I have no problem

because most of your movies have been really

good. But I think there was an agreement that

he couldn't make. You know, money off of merchandising,

because it was kind of... I don't know. I guess

in a way it would be making money off of Star

Wars. I don't know. Not really, because it's

its own... Even though it's a parody of Star

Wars, it's its own thing. It's a... It does have,

as I said before, it does have similar character

traits, and it does have similar storyline. But,

I mean... And do you know what most of the merchandise

in the movie was? Uh, kid stuff. Transformers

from the 1986 movie stuff with its baseball's

logo on it. Oh Really? Yeah I know for sure the

lunchboxes. I'm not sure about the other stuff.

Yeah, most of the stuff is transformers memorabilia

products with state space balls logos That's

sad It's a great transformers in trivia Another

thing I just thought of is when that when they

say that a pizza the hut ate himself to death

Yeah, I always thought that Vinnie ate him I

mean I know it says that that he ate himself

to death But I mean we physically see Vinnie

eating Pizza Hut. I just love Pizza Hut How much

did they have to pay Pizza Hut for them to do

that? I know there's such a good play on it Yeah,

he's eating himself. I love it and we need to

mention about Pizza Hut You know great great

actor Rest in peace Dom del Louise. Oh my god.

Yeah Just amazing. No, they did have some pretty

good after the optimist. Yeah, I Think the only

other place I've seen the the Daphne chick is

like I can never pronounce her damn last name

The only other place I had seen her after after

this was like the first season and a half of

Melrose place Yeah You didn't say what your favorite

part was. I'm trying to think. Oh, I know what

it was. When I was a kid and I saw this, I literally

spent a half an hour laughing. The light, ridiculous

Lutiker speed scene where they stop and Helmut

goes to the front and I could not stop laughing.

I just could not stop laughing. I also like the

one when they reveal the the top secret entry

code. Oh, yeah, one two three four five What

idiot would have a code like that somebody's

luggage code? That's my luggage code Change the

code on my luggage. I wonder what they changed

it to five four three two one. Yeah As far as

my favorite scene, I really liked Actually, it's

funny. It's not the most hilarious scene, but

it's more of me liking the character. I love

the minister guy. Oh, yeah. At the end. I don't

care who it is, somebody's getting married today.

Here's the short, short, short version. Do you?

Do you? Kiss her and get married. Yeah, that's

pretty good. I just love that. Yeah, I like how

quick they do everything in this movie. Oh, yeah.

But they fit so much in. You've got... Very fast

-paced. Star Wars, Wizard of Oz, Indiana Jones.

Star Trek. Yeah, Star Trek. Transformers. I mean,

basically anything sci -fi, this was his sci

-fi spoofs. Yeah. This was the days predating

all the scary movie producers. Back when parodies

were good. That didn't make any sense. Yeah,

back when parodies were good. You know, when

I was watching it back today before we started

recording this episode, I hadn't noticed this

before, but... Megamade's head floating through

space. Unicron! Yeah, that's what I thought when

I saw that. Definitely Unicron. Yeah, that also

spoofed Alien. Yeah, I hate that scene. That's

probably my least favorite scene. Because it's

a spoof of Alien, but it's also a spoof of Michigan

Jay Frog. I don't remember Michigan J. Frog.

Michigan J. Frog was the pride of the WB who...

Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, I do. From Looney Tunes.

Gotcha, gotcha. Hello right now, baby. Hello.

Yeah. I remember now. He didn't have that name

until WB gave it to him or something or other,

but that's just what I remember him as to have.

He kind of spoofed Jetsons, too, with the maid.

Yeah. Yeah. Or at least you could see it as that,

whether they intended to do that or not. Yes.

So, who is your favorite character Steve? I would

have to say probably Lone Star just because he

has the best of Han Solo and Luke Skywalker all

in one. And Bill Pullman's whole reaction to

everything, how he plays out the character is

entertaining to say the least. So I mean that

would probably be my favorite character just

because of that. and because you're following

his adventure through the entire movie. Yeah.

Uh -oh, I'm sorry. I just noticed something.

I can't believe I never noticed this before.

Uh -oh. President Scroob is President Brooks.

You didn't realize that? Stop looking ahead in

the script. I'm looking at the cast listing.

Shut up. We're talking about the cast. I'm looking

at the cast list. Yeah. Uh, but no, I never...

Yeah, screw his brooks backwards, people. Yeah,

I never really knew that. I would have to say

my favorite character, just because I love the

actor that does it, and it's only a bit part,

but Radar. I mean, it's not like my overall,

but this is one of my most favorite characters

out of this. If I had to pick an overall favorite,

it'd probably have to be Dark Helmet, just because

it's so over the top. But it's over the top in

a good way, though. Yeah. Growing up, I liked

Barf and Yogurt the best, but as I've watched

it more and more, I'm with Steve. I really like

Bill Pullman as Captain Lone Star. He's just

so cool. My least favorite character is Easy,

though. I hate the princess and I hate the maid.

I have to completely agree with you. Even Yogurt

was more entertaining than him, or than those

two. I thought they could have gotten someone

better for a princess. Vesp is okay. But yeah,

Dot Matrix sucks. Honestly, Dot Matrix could

marry Prince Valium, for Christ sakes. That would

be an improvement. I just didn't like the look

of the princess that much. Her look and her voice

drove me nuts. I was hoping that... That matrix

would have got killed or done away with early

on. The only thing I thought was funny about

Princess Vespa was the fact that the buns on

her ears were her earphones. If they were doing

it to mimic Leia. That was the only thing I found

entertaining. I agree with you. Yeah, she pretty

much overall sucked. You said Dot Matrix is your

least favorite too, Mike? Oh yeah. The only time

I've ever liked Joan Rivers in anything was when

she was doing the voice of the baby sister in

Look Who's Talking. I didn't even remember that.

I just hate Joan Rivers in general. Stuck up.

You hear this, Joe Rivers? Die in a fire! No,

I'm just playing. Don't really die in a fire,

but die in a fire! Get trampled by somebody wearing

a god -awful outfit so you can make fun of it

and then get killed. I guess getting into the

good, the bad, and the ugly. I don't honestly

think there are any bad or ugly things about

this movie other than the Dot Matrix character.

Yeah. There's a couple parts that aren't as funny

as the rest but it's hard to make every single

part super funny right, but I mean it's It's

not for me. Like when I watch this movie It wasn't

like when we got to an unfunny part or when we

got to a part that kind of lagged It wasn't like

oh well I have to turn this off and go do something

else or I have to you know Fast -forward through

this I can still watch the movie on a whole straight

through well so fast -paced. Oh, yeah I didn't

necessarily care for the dinks either. I love

the dinks I like the Dinks better than the Jowas.

Oh geez, I love the Jowas. I like the Jowas.

You what? We've got one at work, so. Oh God.

Oh, I didn't necessarily care for the whole vacuum.

No, that was stupid. I didn't care for it, but

I did find it kind of funny, just because they

vacuumed the air out of the planets, which is

the same thing as killing them except... It's

kind of retarded when they reverse it and then

they're like, oh I can breathe again, even though

I've been dead for hours. Right. I've been dead

for 25 -30 minutes, yeah. I forgot they also

spoofed Planet of the Apes with that. Yeah, at

the end of it, yeah. But I did find it funny

that they used a giant maid. Why would you use

a giant maid? I mean, that's just, I could see

if they had like a wrestler and you know, like

type thing where they picked up the planet and

squashed it or something? It's actually a combination

made slash Statue of Liberty head. I didn't like

it. I love the escape pod scene. That was hilarious.

Yeah. Oh, we forgot to mention the cross -eyed

people too. The cross -eyed people? The two cross

-eyed space balls people. I remember that. Major

asshole and his gunnery. Yeah. They said they

did that because since they're cross -eyed it

explains why generic soldiers can never shoot

people. I'm sorry, sir. We're not going to be

able to kill anybody today. He's like, I knew

it. I'm surrounded by assholes. Yes, they're

both named asshole. How many assholes do we have

on this ship? Aye, aye, or whatever the hell

the office has to say. Yo. The video phone in

the bathroom, that was a good scene. I was always

like, oh shoot, as a kid I was like, oh my god.

That's very... I love the... She looks down,

I like that. Yeah. I love Colonel Sanders. Close

this close that close this close that and all

that I just I thought that was hilarious Yeah,

there is One of the things I wanted to bring

up As far as the soundtrack for the film when

the film was released spaceballs the soundtrack

was also released on Atlantic Records Featuring

many of the songs heard in the film as well as

three score cues by composer John Morris For

the 19th anniversary, La La Land Records released

a limited edition CD presenting the score in

its entirety for the first time, with bonus tracks

featuring alternate takes and tracks composed

for but not used in the film. I've been to La

La Land Records website. It is sold out on their

website, but you can find this on eBay fairly

easily. I'd love to get a hold of this. It'd

be interesting. Yeah, it would be very, very

interesting. I don't remember much about the

music though for this. Remember thinking it's

it's I remember wondering if if Williams actually

scored it the film because it was so close to

Star Wars stuff Yeah, well, I would have thought

he would have got some type of credit for it

then But Well, yeah, but I mean it wasn't him

though. It was a different. It was someone named

John Morris It wasn't John Williams But what

I was saying was like the like the beginning

intro theme or the theme when you know the just

married Winnebago goes by at the end It sounds

so similar to the Star Wars main title I guess

that's true. Like I said, I can't recall the

music as well, so it must not have stuck with

me as some movies do. Again, out of the three

of us, I'm the only one that watched the movie

before the recording. I have seen the movie a

hundred times. This is one of my favorite Mel

Brooks films by far. It's got a really kick -ass

cast between Mel Brooks, John Candy, Rick Moranis,

Bill Pullman. It's pretty much everybody you

need to know in the whole film. and you've got

Michael Winslow, of course, but the rest of them,

I mean, eh, whatever, but just the whole movie

in general is hilarious. Oh, I agree. Yeah, this

is definitely my favorite Mel Brooks movie, because

usually some of his movies I'm not that big on,

but this one I just absolutely love. I think

the only two, and I haven't seen a lot of Mel

Brooks stuff, but I think the other one that

I really liked was Life Stinks. I don't remember

if I saw that one or not. Life Stinks was, it's

kind of like a Trading Places type movie where

he and his rich partners make a bet that he can't

live on the streets for 30 days or whatever and

then the rich partner that flangled him out of

his company basically takes over and even after

the 30 days just leaves him on the street and

he has to fight to get his stuff back. But anyway,

yeah, as long as I know. Let's see here. What

do we think of the self -destruct button? That

was awesome. Ten, nine, eight, six. Six? What

happened to seven? Just kidding. It's a self

-destruct with a sense of humor. Kevin, you want

to get into some trivia for us? Oh, I suppose.

Just do it, dumbass. Okay, besides the ones that

you've already mentioned. Let's see here. Oh,

there is a point where President Screw meets

the twins, and he tells them to chew their gum.

There's supposed to be a reference to the Double

Mac commercials featuring twins. We already talked

about Mel Brooks being President Screw backwards.

It took him six months to write this script.

Like I said, he sent the script to George and

Lucas because he was concerned about Lucas being

offended, but Lucas called Brooks and gave him

his trust after seeing Blazing Saddles and Young

Frankenstein. Yeah. A couple ad -lib parts. John

Candy ad -libbed the line, oh, that's going to

leave a mark after standing up without undoing

his seatbelt. And the other big part that was

all... Adlib improv was the scene where Dark

Helmet is playing with his dolls. That was not

in the script. Mel Brooks came up with the idea

on the set one day and told it to Moranis, who

then improvised the entire scene, including the

dialogue. I'm always impressed when actors do

great improv. Oh, yeah. You might not have known

that the barf costume was operated by three people.

Wow. Yeah, I don't know why. It says John Candy

operated his tail. Using a hidden control in

his paw while two assistants each controlled

an ear It was powered by a 30 pound battery that

he wore on his back. Oh That's not good. Oh,

yeah, that's interesting. Um Let's see. Oh in

one scene Lone Star says he was born somewhere

in the Ford Galaxy That was a joke about both

Harrison Ford and a couple other things Ford

cars. Yeah, obviously Let's see. In the DVD commentary

Mel Brooks talks about how difficult it was playing

the yogurt character. The gold -colored makeup

gave him a terrible rash on his face and neck.

So the shooting of all of yogurt scenes were

out of sequence. Also his knees were hurting

constantly since he had to walk around on his

knees even though he was wearing knee pads. He

also goes on to say that in spite of all the

difficulties he enjoyed playing a yogurt tremendously

and that it was all worth it. He came up with

the idea for this film when he discovered he

had yet to spoof space movies since he had already

destroyed the western films with Blazing Saddles,

made fun of the horror genre with Young Frankenstein,

and gave silent movies the axe with silent movie.

He decided it was time to do a spoof on space

movies, so that's where the idea came from. And

obviously there's a lot of Jewish -related jokes.

He did say that he felt ashamed for putting all

those jokes in the movie in the first place,

but that he was proud for leaving them in. So

I kind of find that interesting. When I noticed,

before you go on to more trivia, just really

quick, what I noticed a lot was after they showed

the merchandising scene, I caught merchandising

everywhere and I laughed so hard. That was a

great touch. I laughed so hard when it cuts back

to President Scroob and him and the two double

mint twin chicks and the other lady comes in

the monitor, it says, space ball the sheet. The

merchandising part is awesome. Yeah, it is Also

the last thing I have there was a full face mask

resembling a wrinkled bulldog that was originally

constructed for the character of barf But Mel

Brooks decided that if they were going to hire

John Candy behind a mask He might as well hire

someone else for half the price so you can see

John Candy So a nose and upper lip piece was

tried next which candy approved, but Brooks did

not Finally settled on the animatronic ears,

connected to a hair piece and a small nose application

and a patch over one eye. Which was supposed

to look like the dog from the Our Gang shorts,

if you're familiar with those. Interesting trivia

for this one. I'm not a dog, I'm a mug. Half

man, half dog. It had to look like John Candy,

that's part of the comedy. So getting into the

reception and the at -the -box office stuff,

the budget for Spaceballs was an estimated 22

.7 million. The film grossed just over 38 million

during its run in the United States, taking in

6 million on its opening weekend behind Dragnet.

Oh, wow. Well, it made its money back. Yeah,

that's true. Thank God. I'm still waiting for

Spaceballs 2, the search for more money. That's

a great line. Yeah. The film has received mixed

reviews from critics. Rotten Tomatoes reported

that 62 % of critics gave the positive reviews

based on 20 reviews with an average rating of

6 .2 out of 10. Another review, Agitator Metacritic,

which assigns normalized ratings out of 100 top

reviews from mainstream critics, the film received

an average score of 46%, which I think is so

stupid. I'm not reading that next part Fuck you

old man. That's all I gotta say you and your

friggin 2 .5 Yeah, yeah, well a lot of people

claim that they waited too long to do a Star

Wars spoof because it was 10 years afterwards

but I thought that was kind of nice that they

waited for the 10 year part and it's not just

a spoof on Star Wars so I mean I know that's

the main movie it's spoofing but yeah it's a

spoof on all things sci -fi so yeah it's like

I said they fit so much into this movie you know

we've already said it and I'll say it again Star

Wars, Indiana Jones, Wizard of Oz, Star Trek,

Transformers Alien, Planet of the Apes, everything.

What it did right was it gave everything its

opportunity to make its own money, and then it

just kind of rode on the coattails of all of

them. Yeah, it didn't necessarily try to capitalize

on the rush or the popularity of them as they

were popular, which a lot of things do. I mean

the scary movie came out right after all those

scary movies or during when some of them were

still being made. The thing is, all those movies

pretty much flopped. I think if this movie were

made today or Mel Brooks' film like this, I think

it would do much better than those. Oh yeah,

it would blow those out of the water. This is

definitely probably Brooks' most popular film.

I think it's funny because you compare the Rotten

Tomatoes critics who gave it a 62%. Obviously

that's just based on 20 reviews. If you go off

the over a thousand reviews from the actual community

on Rotten Tomatoes, they give it an 80%. 80%,

yeah. So it basically has a 100 % total. And

you know what, Roger Ebert? Suck my left nut.

What getting into the IGN replacement crew, I

assume all of us are gonna give this a four,

right? Oh, yes And getting into the DVD releases,

it is on DVD. It's on Blu -ray as well. I haven't

seen what the Blu -ray features are. It's on

single disc and it's on two disc collector edition

DVD, which is the one I have. The collector edition

features, special features are audio commentary

by Mel Brooks, Spaceballs, the documentary, In

Conversation, Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan, John

Candy, Comic Spirit, Storyboard to Film Comparisons,

film flubs, space quotes, Spaceballs the trivia

game, Spaceballs the behind the movie photos,

Exhibitor trailer with Mel Brooks' introduction,

Spaceballs the costume gallery, Spaceballs the

art gallery, and original theatrical trailer

as well. Yes. As far as, I mentioned it earlier

about Spaceballs 2. I seriously doubt that it's

ever going to... God, I wish they would do what

it was rumored though. Oh, God, yeah. Oh, yeah.

Breaking the fourth wall, the possibility of

a sequel is already included in the film itself,

with Yogurt's quote, God willing, we'll meet

again in Spaceballs 2, The Search for More Money.

A play on the film titled Star Trek III, The

Search for Spark. Spock, not Spark. In September

2004, news about a sequel parading the Star Wars

prequel trilogy appeared on the internet. It

was rumored that there were going to be a sequel

titled Spaceballs 3, the search for Spaceballs

2. But the sequel turned out to be a hoax. That

would have been perfect. That would have been

awesome. I would have paid good money to go see

that. Yeah, as long as Mel Brooks was... Mel

Brooks would have to be the one in charge. Oh

yes, very much so. In January 2005, it was revealed

that Spaceballs would be turned into an animated

television show on September 21st, 2006. Mel

Brooks announced that he was developing an animated

TV series based on Spaceballs, which he debuted

in September of 2008. The series Spaceballs the

Animated Series premiered on the Canadian Super

Channel and the American cable channel G4, which

I don't think it lasted too long considering

now that G4 is pretty much dead. I did not know

that there was ever an animated series for this.

Really? I did, and it's not very good. Yeah,

unfortunately it wasn't that great. It was, in

my opinion, it was quite a shallow shell of what

this could have been. The movie was definitely

pretty much the only way to go on this. The series,

I couldn't get past the first episode. So maybe

he shouldn't do a sequel. Well, I mean, if it

was done right, I mean... If he kept it in the

vein of this film instead of going on like what

he did in the TV show, I think it could be fine.

Yeah. We'll return after these messages. Join

I want you to listen to it because it's the world's

first Beast Wars and Beast Machines review podcast.

If you don't listen to it, I will set my vehicles

it's Optimus Solo from GeekCast Radio Network's

The Telecast coming to you with an important

message about our Listener's Choice episode.

listener, a chance to choose the topic in one

of our shows. This is how you can cast your vote

for what the topic should be. Head on over to

geetcastradio .com and click on the telecast

Listener's Choice and click on the comments button.

All that's left for you to do now is to cast

your vote through a comment. For example, you

might say, Hey, I see that Nick Arcade is not

in your Season 1 lineup, so I'd like to cast

a vote for Nick Arcade to be the Listener's Choice

episode. It's that simple, so please go cast

your vote for your favorite show and stay tuned

for episode 34 to see which show becomes our

very first Listener's Choice. That does it for

now. This has been Optimus Solo from the Telecast.

So, final thoughts on Spaceballs. Kevin, what

are your final thoughts? Spaceballs is easily

one of my favorite spoofs of all time. The only

ones that I can even think that I could put up

there with it are stuff like Robin Hood, Men

in Tights. Maybe a few of the, I mean Princess

Bride is basically a spoof too, but not in the

same, not a full -off spoof, but this is just

one of my favorite stories of all time. I love

sci -fi movies, so I actually get almost all

the references that they make. It's so fast -paced

that you're never bored. I love Bill Pullman.

The only thing, like I said, the only thing I

don't like about this movie is the princess and

the dot matrix chick, but this is just a great

movie, and if you have not seen this, you're

missing a classic piece piece of work from the

comedy genre, at least. Way to top there, moron.

Steve, what are your final thoughts on Spaceballs?

Again, one of the best spoof movies of all time

that's, in its own right, become a cult classic,

along with Robin Hood men and tights. There's

tons of awesome sci -fi stuff. this is the best

thing to watch just because it's entertaining

and it hits your geek credits. Definitely, which

Mike needs to love. Shut up, Kevin. Yeah, I think

one of the things we didn't actually mention,

one of the things I want to mention, my final

thoughts here, I absolutely love the little mini

scene of once they're inside the ear of the Megamade

and Vesp is like, Don't touch the sides, and

it shows like a little video computer screen

of the Winnebago, and it looks like, almost looks

like an operation game. You're a moron. Nobody

remembers that scene. What did you say? Oh god.

Just kidding, I'm giving you a hard time because

you called me a moron. Uh, alright. Sounded a

thing head here. Do that again, please. Alright,

so yeah, Spaceballs is just, it's one of the

best spoofs of all time. A lot of people that

are doing spoofs nowadays need to go back and

watch this film and learn what a good fucking

spoof is. Yes. I'm looking at you people with

date movie and epic movie and whatever though.

Scary movie. Scary movie. It's called learn how

to write a good movie. Yeah, exactly. Dickheads.

Dickheads. Hello family guy does a good job.

No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,

no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,

no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,

no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,

no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no

This movie is ten times better than any Star

Wars parody Family Guy's ever fucking done. Well,

I agree with that, but Family Guy's still cool.

No, no it's not. Not at all. Yes, yes robot chicken.

I will agree with family guy. Fuck that show.
