You're listening to the decaf radio network of

podcast You are the cream of the college crop

This little summer league is one step away from

getting paid to play baseball. You're as good

as any of those guys out there Dude what are

you doing? For these ballplayers. Take your time

around the corner. Getting to the majors. It's

my house mom. Is she married? Takes courage.

She's over 40. She's old enough to be my mom.

I'm real good with ballplayers. It takes commitment.

I like a big girl. Large, voluptuous, full -figured,

massive, honey. Anybody got a problem with that?

Okay. And sometimes, the best catch in town is

right in front of you. So you mow her lawn? Allow

me to introduce you to a good friend of mine.

This is Ryan Doone. Done. Done. I saw you at

the game. Those outfits are cute. Nice. And they're

nice. And they're cool. It's cool. Okay, I'm

gonna shut up now. This summer, Warner Bros.

presents... Freddy Prince Jr., Jessica Biel,

and Matthew Lillard. I need more garbage from

you guys. And you're warming the sticky vinyl

of Bussie back to Mommy. We got more than that,

son. Come on, kid. Get up. I got it. You've been

given this gift. You get the start tomorrow.

What the pitch? The biggest game of my life.

Why are you so scared? You want big rewards?

You gotta take big risks. Summer catch. This

is Billy Brubaker, our catcher. Nice thong. Thanks.

Welcome to the 69th episode of The M -Wire, brought

to you by the GeekCast Radio Network. I am your

host, TFT1Mike, and joining me for the first

time on this show is JT. You heard him on Tooncast

episode. Wow. Dude, two 69s in a row. Holy crap.

What the hell is wrong with you? Oh, I am blessed

in a multitude of ways, Mike. I just realized

that. I'm like, oh, holy crap. He was on Tooncast

69. Now he's on M -Wire 69. I so did not plan

this. Well, what can you say serendipity? So

what's been going on with you, dude? Not a whole

lot really I mean just basically work picked

up a second part -time job on top of the full

-time job that I work is I'm just not making

enough money in this economy and you know trying

to start doing my own little movie review thing

with our buddy Glade there that came on the Johnny

Bravo episode of Tooncast and did the Scooby

-Doo one which I finally got around to listen

to Muppet Baby so I'll be listening to Scooby

-Doo tomorrow probably and actually talked to

boss K -Dawg there he said be helping out with

his new project on the network in the new year

so yep Let's see what happens when I get to do

that and just live in life, man. Yup. I've pretty

much been working my ass off all week. I think

I've recorded, not including everything I have

to record later today, I've probably recorded

about maybe six things this past week. We recorded

MWIRE episode 65. We recorded Beast Unleashed

episode 27. We interviewed Larry DiTilio. What

else have we done? a whole bunch of podcasting

stuff. So, as I said, we're going to be talking

about Summer Catch, and to set the stage a little

bit, it is a 2001, yes, I know it's a ten -year

-old film, but a romantic comedy film starring

Fred Prince Jr., Jessica Biel, and Matthew Lillard.

The story takes place on Cape Cod, but the majority

of the film was shot in North Carolina. When

did you first see this? Basically, this is now

set your way back machine to the fall of 2001

well this is the this is on now just let me tell

the story of that and remember boys and girls

before we had DVDs we had the mysterious relics

known as video cassettes and yeah it's basically

first time I saw this movie was just after it

came out on VHS way like way back in the day

used to get together with friends you know once

or twice a week we'd hit the local you know,

mom and pop video store, you know, see what's

new, what's old, pick up like, you know, seven

movies or something, do a little mini marathon

on Saturday night, something like that. And this

one time, my good buddy Curtis, you know, he

was a huge Wing Commander fan of the games and

he liked the Wing Commander movie. Please don't

hate him. And it was a bad... I've never seen

it so I don't even, I can't have an opinion either

way. Let's put it this way. I'd sooner watch

Wing Commander than the Mario Brothers movie.

But I'd have to be drunk. Wait, wait, wait. Hold

on, hold on, hold on. You're telling me you would

rather watch Wing Commander than Super Mario

Brothers? Mike? Okay, let's put it this way.

My, the venom that I feel towards the Super Mario

Brothers movie, I think almost rivaled Dodd's

opinion of that movie. And we know how much Mr.

Dodd hated that movie. Yeah, but you guys are

wrong, though. You guys are just wrong. We'll

have to discuss that later. But yeah, so basically

when with my friends, my buddy Curtis, he's a

Freddie Prinze Jr fan and I am too. We look,

hey, Jessica Beale, Freddie Prinze. let's check

it out and you know we actually rather like the

movie I mean it wasn't you know groundbreaking

or anything but it was a good you know hour and

a half entertaining romantic comedy sort of thing

and you know I didn't walk away disappointed

yeah I am the same way I think I first saw this

at the time I think I saw it on HBO I know I

didn't see this in theaters I would remember

if I'd seen this in theaters but I think I had

taped it off of HBO and I had watched it like

obviously on those old relics of VHS's but this

is one of my favorite movies because and as far

as like favorite movies to you know like a feel

-good movie for me is this movie just like if

it's something especially baseball and I know

baseball movies yeah there are classics like

Field of Dreams and Bull Durham and Major League.

Well, I was going for more dramatic than comedy,

but okay, Major League. Tom Baird, your baby.

I like Major League 2 better, actually. Anyway,

that's a discussion for another day. One of the

few reasons why this movie hits home for me outside

of the fact that I found out later that it was

filmed in North Carolina, you know when you first

see movies before you look information up on

them, you assume that it says, oh, this is on

Cape Cod, or oh, this is in Boston, or oh, this

is here, this is there. Now unless you can obviously

recognize the city, like say a majority of the

filming now is done in Toronto. I mean unless

you can actually recognize Toronto, You don't

freaking know you assume that you know if they

say it's in Boston it's in you know it's filmed

in Boston and Me being from New England and from

Boston I that's one of the reasons why I absolutely

love this film because of the way they hope they

set it up and Even though it was filmed in North

Carolina. They managed to get in a couple of

lighthouse shots They managed to get in a whole

bunch of great things I tell you what I don't

know how traffic is up in Saskatchewan, but I

tell you there's nobody I know that can handle

a rotary unless they unless they're from New

England because rotaries people here in Louisville

Kentucky that they they can't drive as it is

but rotaries would kill these people down here

yeah oh boy so yeah um really good and it surprises

me it really shocks me where Matthew Willard

shows up sometimes It really does, because I

think before this, the only other time I had

seen him was as serial killer in Hackers. You

know what, I think almost anyone, you say the

name Matthew Lillard, they immediately think

of that movie Hackers. Now, I mean, I liked him

from, you've seen him at other things over the

years. I mean, he did a pretty good Shaggy in

the Scooby -Doo's movies. You know, he really

got in there. One of the movies is kind of a

dark horse with a lot of my friends. I liked

the remake of 13 ghosts the remake of 13 ghosts

well 13 ghosts like those they came out and I

think same might have been the same summer as

Summer catch but it originally it was like one

of these one of the great old -school Halloween

3d horror movies from like back in the 60s. It's

a contemporary of the original house unhaunted

hill. Oh Okay When you said 13 ghosts, the first

thing I think of is it's the 13 ghosts of scooby

-doo You are so addicted shut up I'm not knocking

you. I'm just saying 13 ghosts was very good

as far as the scooby -doo stuff 13 ghosts was

very good. So yeah anyway to digress Yeah, back

to the point. Yeah Yeah, so summary catch is

just really really great and was actually nice

seeing Jessica Beale outside of her psychotic

seventh heaven roll Yeah, no, I mean that she

actually Like, I mean, just, you know, I never

really actively watched Seven Heaven. Like, I

see the commercials, like, hey, she looks good.

But that's about as far as my interest kind of

went. Yeah. No, she was really good. She's got

kind of, I mean, say what you will, but what's

her name? The blonde from the Jim Carrey movie,

The Mask. Cameron Diaz. Yeah. Her and Jessica

Biel, they both have this really kind of when

it comes to like comedy and stuff like that they

both have that you know they kind of have a natural

talent which I really liked about Jessica Biel

in this movie and You know just get back to Lillard.

I mean the guy just plays like you know vaguely

psychotic funny people so well, so I Mean what's

not to like about him? Yeah, he's he's a really

great great character actor and Freddy Prince

jr. I don't know. I like some of his stuff, but

I think the problem I have is the the whole fangirl

Thing on him as far as oh my god like when she's

all that came out It's like oh my god. Thank

you. It's jr. Move. All right, so like oh I was

like, oh god, give me a break, but he's done

a lot of good films as well Yeah, get it. What

are you say? Well, I was just saying like even

look at that the sitcom he had for like a couple

seasons. He's got You know, he's got a large

chunk of his dad's You know natural comic talent

like he can be funny when he has to so Which

kind of played well for this movie? Mm -hmm Yes,

and normally this is where I would read you guys

the plot but unfortunately the plot sucks So

I'm gonna read you the DVD box America's two

national pastimes, baseball and romance, are

in play in this bulldurn -styled comedy -romance.

Freddie Prinze Jr. plays Ryan Dunn, a lawn boy

hoping for greenery pastures after he joins an

elite Cape Cod summer league that's been a career

stepping stone for many big league players. Jessica

Biel portrays Tinley Parish, a wealthy Vassar

grad. vacationing on the Cape. He loves her,

she loves him, but there's a catch. Tenley's

family thinks romance with a blue -collar guy

is strictly minor league with plenty of diamond

heroics, hot soundtrack tunes, and a likable

array of talents portraying fun -loving jocks,

jills, and townies, and this summer is quite

an entertainment catch. You guys gotta understand

something, and I don't know how it is in Canada.

As far as baseball... I know you guys are hockey

guys, but I don't know how popular baseball is

in Canada, but in Boston, baseball is, you know...

Well, to put it... Like unto God? Well, no. I

would put it in Jimmy Fallon's terms, you know.

The Red Sox, sex, then... What did he say? It

was... They said Red Sox sex and then God or

something or other as far as like the top like

I don't know baseball is just a just America's

pastime I don't care what people say that they

can't watch it be on TV if they can't watch it

because it puts them to sleep That's bullshit,

but that's just my opinion about it And me being

from that area and just seeing this film. It

was just great. It had great acting in it The

story was very good. The only thing that I would

really call into question on the story is They're

supposed to be telling a story of like the whole

summer and I guess by the end of the movie. It's

the last game of the season. It's like Coming

up on Labor Day weekend or something or Labor

Day weekend has just passed So I guess technically

through two or three months Has passed since

the beginning of the movie, but you're gonna

fall in love with somebody that fast I mean,

I know it's a movie and I know it's a nitpick,

but it's like at the beginning of the movie You

know, he's riding his little lawnmower crashing

into her birdhouse because, you know, he's standing

on her bikini ass, dipping in the pool, you know.

And by the end of the movie, they're in love

with each other, which is... I'm not... I like...

I love that, but I'm just calling into question

as far as the progression of the relationship

because he's constantly running away from his

problems and she's constantly chasing him. Well,

yeah, I mean that's I guess the kind of share

the same nitpick in that is that you don't get

a really clear sense of Time progressing in this

movie because like you said, you know, it's just

baseball games sex baseball games sex drinking

baseball games sex Hey, it's the end of the year

Yeah, you don't really get like a sense of things

moving along at all But I mean by the time I

mean I think I think in the movie that Davison's

character, her father, says something about her

fiancé or ex -boyfriend or whatever the hell

Chris Hunt is. The Chris Hunt character, he had

said, oh, he's going to come up for Labor Day

weekend or he's going to come up to shoot a round

of golf with me next holiday. So it's like they

never actually started. It's almost like it's...

Like two weeks after Memorial Day or something

and then it goes throughout the summer and they

do They do mention Labor Day. So I mean, it's

kind of like three and a half months almost but

You're right. There is no like real definition

between the two. They just kind of mentioned

Labor Day at the end of it Yeah, but no, I mean

I mean as far as like, you know, so just the

way the movie goes like how it starts, you know,

he's Working for his dad again in the you know,

the lawn care landscape architect if you will

yeah and You know driving thing crashing a thing

and it's just that that's like a classic staple

of romantic comedies where the guys like checking

the chick out and he You know trips over rock

or runs into a wall or something It's it starts

from there and that's kind of the reason why

I started like the movie right away is because

it It's cliched and it's formulaic, but it works.

That's why people like movies like this mm -hmm

and As far as the story goes I mean yeah, you

read other movies where the guy falls in love

with a girl But he's got all these you know personal

dreams and pressure from his family and pressure

from his friends I mean and you get that you

don't really get a clear sense of The story like

it almost seems like the first half of the movie

is got this just they go almost for the more

for the comedy for the first while and then towards

the Maybe the end of the second act they start,

you know cranking up the drama Well, I think

where the drama comes in is the you know, and

like after the uh... after the game he loses

obviously because you know he assumes and you

know she never said he never asked certain and

she never really tell them at least on screen

and we don't ever see it you know we're just

supposed to assume she's single and then you

know you get the scene with her parents and her

dad saying oh chris is you know coming up there

what whatever and then she's like oh you know

i'm you know i said well you know what we're

taking a break uh... but she doesn't actually

go and tell ryan this she keeps it a secret and

she just tells him yeah i i i can't see you on

on on this evening or whatever and that just

happened to be the evening that he blew one of

the biggest games of the summer and he just the

the problem is only a problem but the problem

with this story is the whole clay it's whole

class versus class They kind of grandfather that

in a little bit, I think. Oh, they don't just

grandfather. Bruce Davidson, are you kidding

me? Rand Parrish? That character just rubs the

class right in their faces. I mean, he's like,

oh, I'm rich and powerful. I have this vacation

home on Shore Road and you're just the lawn boys

and you need to park your trucks on the service

drive and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. You know,

and I'm not saying all rich people are like this

but They are stereotypical rich people. Well,

yeah, no, I guess grandfather is the wrong word.

It's just It's just you know, they the movie

rolls along For a little bit with you to say

different worlds, you know, and maybe it'll work

maybe one but then all of a sudden it's Hey,

look, I'm rich. You're poor. You suck. I rule,

you know, it just seems blatant is It's the only

word I can really think of how all of a sudden,

like, hey, here's another idea that's going to

screw with your life, Ryan. I come from a rich

family, and my dad is a dick. It just kind of

bugs me how it just, I know it's part of the

story, but just watching it sometimes, it just

all of a sudden, it's like, hey, class battle.

Yeah, and the other thing that really bugs me,

and I love this movie, the other thing that really

bugs me is the whole thing between his own parent,

his own father, and his brother, and everything

else, and that whole story, and it's like, oh,

he didn't want the coach knowing that his mom

passed away, or, oh, he didn't want them to talk

to the scouts, or whatever it is. And they are,

you know, genuinely trying to help him, but they

go about it the wrong way. It doesn't help that

his father can be a drunk. He's not, you know,

he's not a... Oh man, how am I going to word

this? It's not like a falling down mean drunk

as far as abuse, obviously, like physical abuse,

but I mean, get a few beers in him and he'll

talk the way he talked after that one game. Yeah.

Well, no, and you gotta, for the listeners, you

gotta realize his dad is played by the staple

of curmudgeon's Fred Ward. And I can't speak

enough how much I love his acting. He's like

one of my all -time favorite character actors.

I mean, especially that one scene in the movie

where, I guess, I forget if Lillard's character

was it Billy Brubaker or something like that?

Where Brubaker moves in with Ryan after getting

tossed from his place. I think it's like right

after he's... done the dirty with Britney Murphy's

character Dee Dee. He's just got this like look

at his face reading the paper he's like nice

thong and he's just got this look at his face

is like you know what I've seen it all now but

yeah little there's like thanks after like drinking

out of the flower vase but no to get back to

the drunk thing no it's uh Fred Ward played that

just right I thought like he was you know abusive

But it's coming from a place of love because

he wants his son to have the things he never

had. Yeah. Oh, yeah. The same thing comes from

his older brother, who, again, another staple

of the 80s, Jason Gedrick from Iron Eagle plays

his older brother, Mike. And he does it more

like he he he's constantly hammering at home

that Ryan needs to sack up and, you know. Reach

for the stars like he has to make that effort

like it's not just gonna be like hey Here here's

you all everything you ever wanted on a silver

platter like he has he's constantly trying to

make his younger brother work for what he wants

That's why it's like at the end of the movie

you see him I mean, you know everything comes

together for Ryan and tenling you see Mike off

to the site, you know drinking a beer or whatever

and he's just like You go boy and you just kind

of not you know It just gives him that nod and

he walks into the background. He was more of

a positive force to get Ryan in the right direction,

whereas his dad didn't really have... Well, he

had the right idea, just the wrong execution.

Yeah, that's what it was. But yeah, but from

that, like I said, the plot, like the whole eventually...

The whole class war thing played into Ryan wanting

to be a pro baseballer and his feelings for Jessica

Biel. Eventually it came together well, but initially

the class war thing just seemed to... It didn't

work with all the other storylines that were

going on in the movie. Yeah, that's true. And

speaking of some of the other storylines as far...

Now, I don't know... how true this is. I've heard

of the Cape Cod Baseball League, but I don't

know everything really about it. In the scene

where Billy starts narrating as far as, oh yeah,

college players from all over the world come

here to these little towns and stay with these

people who open their doors and stuff, I don't

know if people actually do that or not. Like

you said before, you don't know what baseball

is. Baseball is outside of hockey and football.

It's probably number three. I grew up, a couple

of my really good friends I had growing up in

junior high and that are actually playing in

the, what do you call it, the farm leagues, the

one or two steps removed from the pros. I know

one of them is playing somewhere in California

right now. So he's still pursuing the dream,

you know, you know almost 10 year 10 15 years

later, right? The whole idea and again, I don't

know what it's like in the States But I know

sometimes with the sport the summer sports leagues

they have that it's kind of like an exchange

student sort of thing It is so I'm assuming that

the parents I'm assuming that these people that

are house parents do open up their homes But

I think I know what story, side story you're

leaning towards with this conversation. Well...

If it's the one I'm thinking about involving

Fez. You know, we kind of should talk before

we get to that. One of the other things that

really, one of the reasons why I really love

this movie... is the music in it. A lot of the

songs. I love a lot. And I had never heard of

most of these songs. I didn't even know that

Skin was Collective Soul. I just knew that I

liked the song, but I didn't even know that that

was Collective Soul, because I had never heard

the song until I watched this movie. And, of

course, the infamous pool scene with Wild Blue

Knight behind it. That was aw - Oh, that pool

scene was great. Yeah. But yeah, let's talk about

Mrs. Griswold here. And everybody's probably

cringing, oh my god, no. But let's be honest,

man, Beverly D 'Angelo, she's hot for her age.

Dude, she's still hot now. Oh, I know. That's

what I'm saying. That's scary. I know. She's

starting to dip into whatever's keeping like

Tiffany Thiessen from Saved by the Bell looking

fine. Like it's just... But yeah, no, it's that

scene where, you know, it's... They play it up

like once or twice before it actually happens.

And I guess we should tell people the way it

works is when I said Fez before, yeah, Wilmer

Valderrama, Fez from that 70s shown is this movie

playing a kid named Mickey Dominguez. I forget

what... position he actually played in the movie.

I think he's shortstop or something. No, he's

shortstop. He's probably one of the basement,

because Christian Kane was the shortstop. Yeah,

and I'm going to talk a little bit about Christian

Kane in a bit, but Mickey is, you know, he's

a young guy, one of those, you know, first time

out in the big bad world, you know, he's making

a play for stardom, and he's living with an uncredited

role. according to the information I have that

Beverly Eccles walks by his room and he's there

and he's pretending to be asleep and she's like

where you can see sexy nightie and everything

and she's like Mickey. He's just sitting there

with his back to her but you see his eyes are

wide open and he's like oh God, oh God, oh God.

And then they go to one of the many drinking

scenes in this movie when they're talking. you

know about how everyone's hooking up and all

that and they're like dude just go for it she

does this every year and there's this great scene

where uh Mickey walks in the bedroom and his

boxers and Beverly DeAndre was just sitting in

the bed and she's just like how you doing yeah

look at her face and you know and then it cuts

back to the bar like the night next night and

he's telling him it's like did you do it did

you do it and he's like yeah well well it's not

uh first of all well not part of her myth a lot

The whole part of her mythology is that she uses

fruit and stuff, and there's a scene... To relieve

the tension. I don't know what she was doing

with that cucumber, but anyway... To relieve

the tension, yeah, but there's a scene before

he goes in there where... Christian Kane's character

goes in there. And he comes into Damo's room,

which Damo is Dominguez's nickname. He's like,

dude, she used grapes and she made the whole

thing disappear. And then we get to the scene

where he's in there. And the next day, when they're

all talking about it, he's like, she made the

cucumber disappear. And then you pan to Lillard's

care. You pan to Billy, and Billy's like, Was

over there for lunch. She made me a cucumber

salad and everybody just starts cracking up.

Oh Yeah mention that this was Wilmers very first

film role Really? Yep. I didn't know that I thought

it was But he did something else before this

Nope You learn something every day Yeah, this

was Fez's very first film role Yeah, I see I'm

just kind of scared because he's the front -runner

to play the new punch in a Chips movie if they

ever get that made Oh God yeah, I can see him

and Paul Walker is John. It's gonna happen Oh

God that's that's scary To get back to where

they're talking about the cucumber salad, it

also lends to one of my favorite parts in the

movie where Mark Blukus is in this movie too.

There's a crap ton of people in this movie. Like

I said, there's Fred Ward, Matthew Lillard, John

C. McGinley from Scrubs, Brittany Murphy's in

here, Brian Dennehy. Brian freaking Dennehy.

How can you not love that guy? He's another great

character actor. Bruce Davidson from X -Men.

uh... christian kane will get to him in a bit

but uh... mark blukus like uh... riley from buffy

the vampire slayers in here where most people

know him from right after they make the key i

think it's right after they do the cucumber bit

yeah it's in the bar and they're talking about

like he's not getting any he hasn't found what

he's looking for and he gets up and he gives

this great speech about how he loves well no

no no that's not what it is what it is is billy's

i haven't seen it for a couple months billy's

been given him shit all throughout the movie

up to this point about the fact that he likes

fat girls okay yeah so you know he's been dating

this one fat girl throughout the movie and that's

what doesn't that's the whole thing about summer

catch each player each person that that's on

the team has some sort of something that they

need help with and they all find a little niches

as far as uh... freddy prince junior has has

jessica bill uh... brubaker brubaker ends up

with dd uh... domo ends up with the old lady

uh... you know and and miles in the uh... the

miles character he likes big white women so he

had you know he he gets up and thinks this giant

announcement and hey you know if that's what

you like that's what you like and they all just

applaud him and then you see a little well i

don't think like i said i haven't seen it for

a couple months yeah but it was at the Whether

it was before or after this where he you know

he goes to his girl And she's doing like the

you know the dance of the seven veils and she

comes to the bed And he's sitting there, and

he's just like give me give me give me give me

give me and he's just got this Absolutely insane

look of pleasure on his face which looks like

God bless you sir See the funny thing about that

is I didn't I didn't listen to it this time,

but the DVD does have commentary uh... season

yeah uh... commentary with director producer

michael tolan and writer john get gatton's uh...

they specifically said that likely when we see

marjorie later she's lost like a ton of like

that that that whole sex scene with the two of

them after that they had to go back and reshoot

some stuff because she lost a ton of weight after

they'd shot that scene Oh, God. Yeah. But it

is the same girl. And that's the other thing.

As far as the cast goes, if you look at the cast

list, I mean, honestly, outside of Freddie Prinze

Jr. and outside of Matthew Lillard and some of

the other ones, like, a majority of these people

have been on CW or WB shows. I mean, Jessica

Biel. Let's see here. Christian Kane. uh... who

else uh... wilmer uh... so he was on fox uh...

no one was on he's on that seventy show that

was primarily a fox it was fox no it started

on fox before it went to syndication okay that's

that's why i'm thinking okay but yeah uh... and

it's like okay why are all these wb stars or

stars that you know now it's cw why are all these

wb stars shown up. And of course, I look at the

thing like, oh, well, it has Tolan and Robbins.

And the other one that usually produces with

them, I forget what his name is off top of my

head here. And Tolan and Robbins, you know, they

do a lot of the CW stuff. I mean, they're partial

creators, not creators, but partial executive

producers. or that their production company handle

smallville uh... and just all this other stuff

like all that's why the always wb stars are in

here because of we have them so but i mean it

it's a good cast and i don't you know a lot of

movies you you usually see like potential cast

that didn't happen like uh... chevy chase was

originally supposed to be one of the ghostbusters

You know what I mean? It's like that. So I mean,

this cast really fits this movie. I don't think

you could put anyone else, only switch any of

these people out of this. Yeah. No, it's like

you said, the CWWB, you know, was in full effect

in this movie, but that was like kind of that

10 years ago, like when the WB was just starting

to hit its stride, you know, that's when they

had a lot of power and they were putting their

people in like every possible project. But yeah,

like you said, Christian Kane is one of my, actually

he's one of my favorite TV actors of like the

last 10 years, because he started on Angel as

the... Lindsay. As Lindsay, yeah, which led to

the end of the first season, Angel, when Lindsay

and Angel are fighting, where he gets his arm

cut off, has like that great line, don't believe

everything you're foretold. And you really, if

people haven't seen Angel, you guys got to go

back and watch that series. It was seriously

a good show. And right now, Christian Kane, he's

got like this country rock band thing that he's

doing. He's on the TV show Leverage, which if

you haven't seen it, it is seriously one of the

best shows that is on TV right now. Mm -hmm,

but that's neither here nor there, but I mean

overall and I don't know where we are with this

script No, it's fine. You've got overall I like

I said, there's so many good that at the time

and still are good great actors on this cast

like you got you know was it John C. McGinley

like I From scrubs like the guy plays cranky

characters like you wouldn't believe and in this

it's totally different. He's playing a scout

Yeah, he's playing it very straight and yeah

normal which and I bought it, you know, it's

just the way he played Hugh Alexander Yeah, checking

the info here and I loved okay Sad that sad that

she's gone with this definitely taken too soon

was Brittany Murphy Yeah, and she she just had

like the way she played Dee Dee was like this

I'm gonna Well, what's the polite way of saying

it she I'm gonna have relations with every young

stud in the baseball team You know say out of

which which sorry just enter which leads to I

love how They do how she makes it with Freddie

Prinze jr. And it's like the first day of the

season and he runs into he's like late for the

meeting he runs in with nothing but his ball

cap on and the sleeping bag wrapped around him

and he's just got this look uh i'm in trouble

aren't i did he's just looking at with this like

oh i'm gonna have fun with you i see the the

funny thing about her is uh Okay, all right.

I was gonna say it was a funny thing about her

is she is probably the only one in this entire

film that does a fairly good Massachusetts accent

and that was because she was She was born in

Georgia, but she was raised by her mother in

Edison, New Jersey so She comes at awfully awfully

close to the Massachusetts accent everybody else

Really? I mean, okay, obviously the baseball

players I can forgive because they're coming

from other areas, but like Freddie Prince Jr

His brother And his dad the three of them they

have no Massachusetts accent whatsoever. The

only other one that does it very well is Augie

Augie does it very well, but the rest of them

they all suck when it comes to accents Yeah,

it's like that, but I don't think anyone really

Well, you could you couldn't really argue that

point about Jessica Biel and Davison because

I mean they're there for the summer so you know

they're Well, right, but I'm talking about like

the people that are supposed to be there for

You know, yeah Gabriel man and that are supposed

to live there. Well Gabriel man pulled it off

the other one his little buddy there Pete Pete

didn't really sound too authentic, but Uh, let's

see, I guess we can, uh, well, who's your favorite

character? Uh, well, aside from, you know, Ryan,

like, aside from Freddie Prinze Jr. as Ryan and

Jessica Biel, who, you know, they're the stars

of the movie, I gotta give it up to Billy Brubaker.

Matthew Laird, he made me laugh so hard when

I watched this movie, like, every time. Like

I said, like I said, the thong scene where he

walks into the kitchen the morning after, and

it's... Every time I break out laughing because

that's just so funny. Yeah, and I mean Domo like

Wilmer he was good too. I've always been a big

fan of his but I'd have to say Top three is you

know, Freddie Prinze Jessica Biel and Lillard.

They're just the three that I really latched

on to watching this movie yeah, I would have

to agree and it's funny because Think I ripped

it a while ago. I think I still have the audio

clip and I'll put it somewhere in the episode

One of the things about Lillard in comedies is

some of the lines that he comes up with because

when Miles is first telling Billy about and he

likes big women and Billy's like Okay, or you

know some some weird saying of okay, and I was

like oh god. It's so hilarious Yeah, it's cuz

if you look at like the way he plays Baker in

this movie and how he played, God, I can't remember,

Stu in the first Scream movie. He plays the characters

a little bit the same. He adds all these weird

pronunciations and noises and ticks into his

character that it just sells it a little bit

more. Yeah, which is why I like them so much

because he's just got this like really like he

does these slight little bits of improvisation

in his roles. Yeah, he does. Plus the guy must

be on like a permanent Red Bull high because

I don't think he always looks like he's like

three seconds away from like snapping his twig.

He would have to be considering what he did snap

in this movie. I'm wondering. If that if that

was a prop or if that if he actually snapped

that bat over his knee When he got pissed about

it about losing the game Yeah, and he just went

hmm, and it just shattered splinters everywhere

Don't know if we could ever find out for certain

that I'm gonna say I'm gonna lean towards it

was Hollywood magic that did that Probably it

was just a really dry fake bat, but you know

yeah, maybe just like I said Scott Maybe I should

try to find some contact information for Matthew

Dude there's an interview you got to do If you

could get him and talk to him about doing scooby

-doo or something like that that would be awesome

But yeah, no a Lillard was like Aside from the

core of Freddy and Jessica Lillard, definitely

the next best thing in the movie. So getting

into the good, the bad, and the ugly, which I

honestly don't think there really is any bad

and ugly stuff here. I mean outside of the little

nitpicks we've already really mentioned, I mean

if you're just gonna watch this movie to enjoy

it, this is a very enjoyable movie, but there

is one thing I wanted to bring up for the production.

Apparently... Only seven of the 35 people cast

for the roles of the teammates were actors. The

baseball players had to attend four -week training

camp during which they learned how to ignore

the cameras on the field and to feel and act

more as a team. All of the actors had to practice

every day." So, you know, you can't say that

they phoned this in. I mean, they actually did

do this. I mean, you know, so... I really, really

enjoy that, and I gotta bring up this soundtrack.

This soundtrack is just awesome. A couple of

my favorite songs, Sweet Summer by Radford. Let's

see, where's the other one? Anything and Everything

by Youngstown. Shit. Skin, Collective Soul, obviously.

Wild Blue Night, the song that played during

the swim scene. and Lovin' Each Day by Roman

Keating. All really good songs. And the songs

really made the movie as well. I mean, you know,

there's not a lot of, I mean, outside of like,

obviously like epic movies like Back to the Future,

Star Wars, there's not a lot of, there's not

a lot of movies that I like the soundtrack to

a lot of them. Yeah. Because it just doesn't

fit. Well, because I mean, most soundtracks nowadays,

you're lucky if like three of the songs on the

disc are in the actual movie. I know you look

you look at him. It says music from and inspired

by is like so Half the stars on the soundtrack

have got to see an advanced screening. They're

like, oh, oh, I know what I'm gonna write That's

way like don't even get that that's like a whole

like rant waiting to happen about the soundtracks

and such No, it's they had a really good like

I think probably my fit my two favorite songs

in the soundtrack like, you know Collective soul.

I've been a huge fan for years growing up. I

love them. My two favorite songs though aside

from the collective soul was probably Rick Rubin

and LL Cool J's going back to Cali. It's a classic

song in my opinion and Makes no difference by

some 41 are probably my two favorites Just because

some 41s like it's a Canadian band I don't know

how many people know about them in the states,

but oh There are plenty of people here in the

states that probably know all about some 41.

Yeah, I mean that that was That was just like

I said, like you said, this is a great soundtrack.

It works for the movie and Just one of those

things you just throw in and listen to all the

time. So oh, yeah uh... as far as being at the

box office the film opened at number six in the

u .s. box office ranking uh... it made close

to seven and a half million dollars on its opening

weekend which is very very good we have something

here called the IGN replacement crew which the

rules are Don't watch this even if it's free

worth a watch if it's free on TV worth adding

to the Netflix list or this one is a must add

to your DVD collection Well since I already have

it. I don't have to add it to my collection,

so we all know what my vote is To be honest if

I ever found it at the video store Walmart wherever

I find it I'd probably say it's a solid number

four, but for people who haven't seen the movie

I'd say it's probably a solid three and a half.

I'd definitely see it. If you see it in your

Netflix list, watch it. And if you love it, buy

it. Because it is seriously one of those movies

I think a lot of people should see. Yeah. Let's

face it. Like I mentioned earlier, obviously

some of the more classic baseball films like

Feel the Dreams and Bull Durham, obviously this

is not that. We don't have, if you will build

it, she will come. You know we don't have that

in this movie, but it is still a very very good

film As as I said it is on DVD as far as release

These special features include the feature -length

commentary with director producer Michael Toland

and writer John Gatton's there's additional scenes

Interactive menus cast and director film highlights

and a bunch of other Basically format issues

and that's that's whole other podcast that I

can get into because I'm sorry like languages

and subtitles and scene access Those are not

bonus features. Ladies and gentlemen, those are

aspects of the actual disk Yeah That's why my

roommate always gives me crap about buying the

2Disc special edition stuff and is like, why

don't you just get the regular version? If I

want to watch the trailer, I'll go to YouTube.

I love watching movies with director commentaries.

I like watching the behind the scenes making

of little vignettes, whatever little extras,

the occasional music video that are included

on a disc. But yeah, the DVD, if I ever find

it, it's still sadly not in my DVD collection,

but one of these days I'll find it, and hopefully

one of these days I will have money to buy it

at the time. Every time I go to the store, there's

no end of like, oh, I need that one, oh, I need

that one, oh, God, look at my roommate, please,

loan me 20 bucks, I need this. And he's looking

at me, no. Wow, I don't know if this kids again

You know Canada and us are different, but try

Amazon .ca Because I'm on amazon .com right now

and 37 are newer from 413 ninety seven user from

thirty nine cents in their three collectible

from fourteen ninety eight and honestly i don't

see how that even is as far as collectible because

all this is one desk in the old style the old

flap open style with paper it's not yet what

you know it's one of the very first you know

snap dvd cases it's not like say uh... or easiest

comparison is Power Rangers where it's an actual

case and it opens. This is just a flap thing

where the thing flaps out. But I mean, there

you go. It's not going to be that expensive for

you to find this because it is after all 10 years

old. But that's why I'm going to be working like

two jobs now so I can actually buy movies like

this. Yes. So final words on Summer Catch. I

love it. I haven't watched it enough, and I specifically

didn't watch it up until now just for this episode

obviously, but Like I said before if it's you

know if you need a feel -good movie And you are

at firstly you really have to be a baseball fan

to watch this movie you just do You know if you're

a baseball fan, and you need a feel -good movie

you can watch this This is you know it has a

lot of great comedy bits in it one of the lines

was from Billy he's like oh so you're mowing

her lawn and now you're gonna mow her lawn He

said and like on paper that line sounds really

good But until you see Matthew and again, it

goes back to Matthew Lillard and the way he plays

his characters Like he looks the guy's like another

Jim Carrey He just he he acts with his face when

he says that you know, you see his eyebrows and

his eyes bugging out He's just like so you're

mowing her lawn and you're gonna mower lawn,

huh? Yeah, and he's just the whole time you look

at he goes back to you know, Freddie Prinze He's

just staring. I was like god. I want to hit you

Yeah, yeah, but yeah, I mean overall it is Dare

I say a classic, you know romantic comedy. It's

a great summer movie, you know, it's got it's

a great, you know date movie You know, you've

got baseball for the guys you get comedy for

both sexes You got the romance for the women

and got some great characters. You got some good

laughs. It's got You know, again, Lillard, I

can't say enough about the guy. Yeah. Yeah, it

was awesome. Totally recommended. Totally worth

a buy. And, you know, damn it, I'm going to have

to go and find it on, see if it's in parts on

YouTube or something now because now I want to

watch it again. I did find the pool scene on

YouTube. I don't know if the rest of the movie

is on there, but I did find the pool scene. Yeah.
