About this Episode

A look at the 1999 comedy starring Adam Sandler as a slacker who unexpectedly becomes a foster father to a young boy named Julian. The hosts discuss the film's cast, including Jon Stewart and Rob Schneider, the breakout performance of the Sprouse twins, and how the movie balances comedy with more serious emotional elements.

You're listening to the decaf radio network of

podcast New York if you want to enter the greatest

city on earth first you have to get by one person

I'm waiting on you Sonny Koufax had an easy job.

You're a toll collector. Where you going? You

want to take me with you? I guess. And led a

simple life. Deliver it, guys, like you're best

friends. Come back later today. I'll end the

interesting. Okay. Peace out. Until the day...

You refuse to move on to the next phase of your

life. She wants different things, you know. His

girlfriend dumped him for someone else. I found

someone. This old guy? He has a five -year plan.

What is it? Don't die? No. To win her back. I

gotta do something big with my life. He's getting

her. A little surprise. I want you to make joy

of my son. Our son. I adopted him. Great. Now

what? Ow. You wear a diaper? No. Sonny Kofax

is finding out. Should I have a nightlight? Nightlight?

Once you adopt a kid. There you go, all right?

You better give that kid back. I tried to give

him back. You've got to keep him. What about

your sleep? I wet my bed. All right. Nice and

dry. I'm no more wet than that. That one touched

the ground. That one touched the ground. Columbia

Pictures presents. He stopped having breakfast

at 10 .30. No! Oh, please. Don't cry. Don't cry.

You got a happy meal? Can we get a happy meal?

Well, somebody can't get you a happy meal! Adam

Sandler. It's gonna be fun. You nervous? Happy

Halloween. We got a first timer out here. Do

the right thing, buddy. Hang out right here for

a second, all right? Hey, you. What? Hello and

welcome to the 66th episode of The M .Y .R. Brought

to you by the GeekCast Radio Network. I am your

host, Steve Durin -Mike, and joining me is Steve

Megatron. Hello. Hello. How are you, sir? Awesome.

Today we're going to be finishing the sandwich

spotlight volume one with Big Daddy I Guess so

what's been going on with you? Just got done

recording telecast with Kevin. Yeah, how'd that

go fun? entertaining Listen to it when it comes

out or I will send Megatron to your house and

steal your spark Megatron is nothing but a spark

at this point. But he will have a party. Where

the hell did that come from? Anyways. Dude, it's

your character. I don't know. Uh, yeah, I, um...

Welcome to the... Well, actually, we should have

said this in episode 65 for Airheads, but we

didn't run around this until now, but welcome

to the M -Wire full -on... release weekend. This

is the weekend for hell for Steve. Well, I know

it's my fault that we are doing five episodes

in one weekend because I thought at the time

I was going to have financial means to either

rent or get cheaply all the salmon films that

we've talked about. And that just didn't happen.

Thank God Happy Gilmore and Wedding Singer and

Waterboy I saw randomly on TV. But yeah, episode

65 through 70 are pretty much a massive release

because episode 70 is Ghostbusters, which is

this year's M .Y .R. Halloween episode. So yeah,

that's what we've been doing. I have not. You've

been helping. I think Megatron helps enough.

Megatron is what keeps him sane. Not. You are

the bloody fool that contaminates his mind. Yeah,

okay, whatever, Mr. Organic Lover. I will kill

you with a spoon. Get on with the movie! Oh,

great. You get on with the movie. Why don't you

set the stage, Steve? Set the stage. Fine then.

I will. Yes. The movie is Big Daddy. It started

in, or it was filmed in 1999. Directed by Dennis

Dugan. Another Adam Sandler, Dennis Dugan production.

The film was released on June 25, 1999 by Columbia

Pictures. This movie, of course, stars Adam Sandler

and quite a few of his friends. The plot is Sonny

Koufax, Adam Sandler, is a carefree, unmotivated

32 -year -old slob. He does not take on any adult

responsibilities. He has a law degree, but is

too lazy to actually take the bar exam since

he was awarded $200 ,000 in an automobile accident

years prior and lives off of the money. He's

employed part -time only as a toll booth collector.

And one of his best friends is a delivery guy

named Natzo, Rob Schneider. who stops by more

often than anybody else in the whole movie. Yeah.

And then, of course, we get to Sonny's current

girlfriend, Corrine. And. Well, not his girlfriend,

but his his roommate's girlfriend, which his

roommate is John Stewart, Kevin Garrity. He harasses

Corrine about her employment or previous employment

at Hooters. Every second he can Which is hilarious

and I didn't realize Some of the people in this,

you know who you know ended up doing much bigger

roles later on Until I went back to watch this

about three weeks ago Yeah For instance, Garrity

is Jon Stewart the Daily Show. Yeah Rob Schneider's

in just about every one of the Adams family.

Yeah, I mean what Rob Schneider is is an old

staple of Sandler So I mean that's that's fairly

out the window as far as that and Christy Swanson.

She's been around for Well hell since the 1992

Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie. So that was Sonny's

girlfriend. Yes Not entirely thrilled with him.

So she broke it off to go date Colonel Sanders

For his five -year plan Oh, wow. Yes, and you'll

see quite a few other staples of Adam Sandler's

in this film, from previous films. You shouldn't

have said Five Year Plan, you should have said

Eleven Herbs and Spices. Yeah, probably. And

Leslie Mann has been in quite a few Judd Apatow

movies, which I don't know. But anyways. Back

to this film, it shows Sonny's friends, all former

schoolmates, moving ahead in their lives, including

his roommate John Stewart, Kevin Garrity, who's

getting married to Corrine. That's another thing

that's bothering Sonny, so when Kevin decides

to pop the question the day before he's going

to China for his law firm, he ends up basically

spoiling the party by walking in. Getting Korean

pissed at him again because it was I believe

his birthday And they wasted it on him Let's

see social What what part of the movie is this

in it's in the beginning I'm pretty sure was

either his birthday or just a going -away party

one of the two I think it might have been the

going -away party, but he ruins the surprise

in any case and they waste the surprise on him.

So, in essence, he's pissed everybody off in

the movie. But yeah, in any case, what did you

think about the movie up to this point? Honestly,

and I hate to really say this, but this episode

of M .Y .E .R. because, well, it's the 66th episode,

Phoning it in here because honestly the only

thing I really remember about this movie is the

end result I Have seen this movie exactly two

times and that was over ten years ago So Sonny

quickly becomes occupied with a new series events

he wakes up to Kevin already at the airport.

Kevin is revealed as having a having fathered

an illegitimate son whose name is Julian who

was played by Dylan Cole or Dylan and Cole Sprouse

from Suite Life of Zack and Cody. Did you hear

my voice start going away right there? Yeah,

you can have it covered. Anyways, yes, that is

where they are famous from. And I didn't realize

that when I watched this. I just knew they looked

familiar. And then having seen Sweet Life on

deck recently, it put two and two together. See,

it's funny because I remember like the whole

big hype about this movie and everything else

and that this was their breakout role and all

this and all that. And then... I had seen the

number of years later, obviously. I had seen

Sweet Life of Zack and Cody, where they're based

in Boston and everything else. And I was like,

where have I seen these two before? I'm like,

oh wait, they were in an Adam Sandler film. Awesome,

cool, yay. Sweet Life of Zack and Cody and Sweet

Life on Deck are actually very good shows if

you don't... feel that way that's fine but they

are good for a modern show they're not as bad

as some of disney's other stuff they have today

yes uh fish hooks to be an example but anyways

um yes so anyways uh julian shows up as an abandoned

child at sonny's and kevin's apartment And there's

a written explanation that Julian's mother is

now declining to care further for Julian. It

is revealed at the social services office that

she died of cancer. So Sonny calls Kevin and

informs him and decides to handle it himself

and basically, in essence, decides to try and

use the kid to get his ex -girlfriend back, which

fails. So he ends up having to father the boy.

Temporarily until Social Services can find a

suitable home. And then... And then basically

what happens is Social Services discovers that

Sonny is posing as Kevin and insists that he

give up Julian. Social Services takes Julian

and decides to press charges against Sonny. God.

Oh, man. Bad things always ensue. Yes, yes. The

case is brought to court where Sonny has his

friends as counsel, including Layla, Kareen's

sister, and Sonny's new girlfriend, the late

-arrivey Kevin, despite positive testimony from

his friends, even Kareen, who swore to disliking

him from the day they met, and changing the opinion

of his own father. Also, prominent attorney and

the judge is ready to sentence him to jail. for

kidnapping Julian and defrauding the state. At

this point, Kevin steps forward as Julian's father

and insists that no charges be filed, having

remembered a drunken fling with a hooters girl

in Toronto during the 1993 World Series. Oh,

wow. Who played in the 93 World Series? Let's

find this out. Click link, because I honestly

don't remember. Let's see. But the Hooters girl

wasn't good enough. That's all that there was

to it. Yeah, pretty much. The Blue Jays and the

Phillies. That's right. Yeah. And connecting

that with Julian's earlier testimony of originally

coming from Toronto, being born in July, the

judge grants custody to Kevin to the dismay of

Julian, who wants Sonny as his father. Sonny

tells Julian that can never happen because his

real father is present, but they can be friends.

Sonny moves in with Nazo and Kevin gets to know

his son. One year, three months, and six days

later, Sonny, now a lawyer married to Layla with

a child of their own, is surprised with a birthday

party at Hooters attended by all his colleagues

and friends, including Julian, but is more surprised

to find his ex -girlfriend working as a Hooters

girl and her boyfriend with his so -called five

-year plan working the grill. See how that five

-year plan comes to bite you in the ass when

you at least expect it. Yeah. Oh, man. Well,

and again, you got Jon Stewart as Kevin Carrity,

holy crap. Oh, I know. That was pretty damn funny.

A lot of things come to bite Stewart in the ass.

Honestly, I... I know I'm kind of getting off

track here, but I've never really watched The

Daily Show, so... I like what I have seen of

it. I don't know. I don't watch shows like that.

It's just not my thing, I guess. What's your

overall impression of the movie? Actually, it

was quite funny. It's just one mishap after another

pretty much throughout the entire film. Yeah,

I think the only thing I can really remember

outside of the ending, um, didn't they pee on

the wall? Oh yeah, they peed, uh, it was after

trying, I guess it was after the McDonald's incident.

Oh, okay, yeah. Yeah, that's right, that's right.

And he's like, just let it go, man, just let

it go. That's right. uh... you know i i like

this one is that it's a good it's funny and it's

not the it's kind of like a mix between his funny

films and his more serious roles but it's not

it doesn't go in either direction it's like it's

like sitting there right on the fence uh... so

i guess you need to be who's who the movie as

we can already mentioned on stewards in it uh...

Joey Lauren Adams, Rob Schneider, Dylan Nicole

Sprouse, Leslie Mann, Peter Dante, and a bunch

of other people. Christy Swanson. Who is your

favorite character? Well, obviously I like Adam

Sandler's character. But a close second I would

have to say would be the kid just because He

He got to do all kinds of like funny like I don't

know the things kids would do and then at the

same time like disturbing things that kids don't

do and He had a cool nickname in the show Frankenstein

So yeah, I don't know it was just cool like though

the whole overall movie how it played out Yeah,

it was I would have to say just Off of that.

Yeah, I would have to say that Sonny and Julian

are my favorite characters because obviously

you're supposed to root for them since you know

since it's that movie, but And I remember when

this came out kind of getting into the quote

-unquote good bad and the ugly which there really

isn't too much that's bad or ugly about this

one, but I remember when this came out because

they were totting all over Dylan and Cole Sprouse.

I remember seeing specials where they interviewed

them on TV and stuff about, you know, the filming

and like behind the scenes stuff and and whatever

else. So, I mean, it was it was pretty cool.

And I don't ever remember. Like, I mean, obviously

now. I could probably go back and pick out, you

know, times in the movie where I know it's Dylan,

or where I know it's Cole, but back then they

were so young, they were so little, you could

hardly tell. And obviously nowadays, because

they're older, you can tell the difference between

the two of them, but... Up until they hit puberty,

honestly, they were pretty much... I didn't and

they are identical twins, but I mean up until

they hit puberty where they kind of just started

You know going in their own way as far as their

growth You know no one could ever tell those

kids apart The only real bit of like background

information that this one had as far as like

production and all that is basically just a track

listing for the for the for the soundtrack and

of course what Adam Sandler soundtrack isn't

filled with his own music as well but you get

stuff you get a cover of Sweet Child of Mine

by Sheryl Crowe you got a garbage track on here

Limp Bizkit's on here Melanie C from the Spice

Girls oh boy George Harrison Rufus Wainwright

wise guys Sticks The kangaroo song by Tim Hurley

I mean specifically for the movie There were

other songs in that were used in the film that

weren't on the soundtrack and there's a bunch

of these So, getting into the box office and

the reception stuff, the film was a box office

success bringing in $163 million in North America

and $234 ,801 ,195 worldwide. Big Daddy received

generally mixed reviews from critics. It currently

holds 40 % approval rating based on 91 reviews

collected by Rotten Tomatoes, as well as a weighted

average score of 41 out of 100 on Metacritic.

The consensus on the site states it's sloppily

put together and not as funny as Sandler's other

movies. Well, and again, regardless of what the

stupid ass critics say, like I said, this is

a movie that, yes it's not Happy Gilmore, it's

not Billy Madison, it's not Waterboy. This is

a movie that straddles the fence of his acting

chops. Because you have the funny on one side

and you have the serious stuff on the other side

I'm sorry it if you tried to make this like you

had waterboy and Kind of like made fun of the

whole courtroom thing and the whole custody thing,

you know I mean they do have jokes about it,

but I mean it's not it. They're very subtle So

the IGN replacement crew, this is something new

that we're doing with this new format for MWIRE.

The choices are, don't watch this even if it's

free, worth a watch if it's on TV, worth adding

to the Netflix queue, or is a must -have to your

DVD collection. What would you say? I would say

it's a definitely own. Yeah, especially if you're

a family fan, but I would say it's definitely

own anyway just because it shows The lazy Slacker

character grow up and actually be what he was

meant to be right exactly it was like a feel

-good family film there you go and It is on DVD

as far as releases. I There was no DVD release

information for it and of course this came out

at a time where it was like Just before like

special editions were hitting as far as like,

you know double, you know two discs special editions

and all that stuff. So It's on DVD. I believe

it's on iTunes so you can find it You know any

number of places that you you know that you wanted

to look there so final words I think we kind

of already said them, but if you want to give

some final words on the film I don't know, I

think I covered it. Follow us on Twitter, the
