About this Episode

Dave and Steve discuss the 1994 film Blank Check, touching on the unbelievable premise of a child acquiring a million dollars, the cast, and the fun, nostalgic nature of the movie. They reflect on the film's production and legacy, noting the performances of actors like Miguel Ferrer and Tone Loc. The hosts also look forward to future episodes covering various film franchises, including Rocky, Rambo, and The Karate Kid, as part of the show's upcoming schedule.

Hello and welcome to MWIRE movie weekend review

this is episode 131 it is a brand new year 2017

we Left off last year with an epic 20 years of

the IMF mission impossible episode with myself

and Doug Abel for you guys for Christmas But

it is now a new year. Hope everyone's having

a great happy new year all that good stuff and

it is the month of February and we are back and

Episode 131 is going to be blank check from 1994.

I'm joined once again by Steve Megadron. Hello,

sir. Hello, hello, hello. I think the last time

you were on was episode 125, which is Beverly

Hills Cop, which actually got recorded over two

and a half years ago and was posted last year

at some point. Nice. Yeah, yeah. But I will tease

everything about what's coming up on NYR at the

end of the show But we are talking about blank

check 1994 one of the greatest films in 1994

in my personal opinion even though Jeremy Fine

will disagree with me heavily on that When did

you first see blank check I think I was like

No, you were eight. 1994, so... No, I'm saying

when I first saw it. Oh, okay. Okay, you saw

it in 96, okay. Yeah, I didn't see it when it

came out. So... I think I saw it as soon as it

hit videocassette. Which was probably mid -1995.

Because back then, folks, if you didn't know,

from the theaters... to the video cassettes and

Betamax tapes, it took a long time. It took like

nine months. It was like, you know, a giant pregnancy

to have a movie go from a theater to a, you know,

portable thing so you could watch it. Whereas

now it's, you know, they still wait that six

or eight months for stuff in theaters like last

year. If something came out in June, July, or

August, it would hit media release November,

December kind of thing. But back then that wasn't

the case. Some things would be in theaters for

two or three months, and then the following year

it would get released to media release, but blank

check. It stars Brian Bonzal, Karen Duffy, Miguel

Ferrer, who recently passed away. May the man

rest in peace. Anyone that doesn't know the work

of Miguel Ferrer, you really probably should.

I don't know his name, like who he was, but like...

Yeah, in this movie he was Quigley. The skinnier

white guy. Not the fat banker, the other guy.

Okay. The guy that was basically telling the

banker, give me my money. The guy that almost

ran over Preston. Ah, okay. He just passed away.

The actor just passed away, yes, recently, this

year. He, according to what I've read, he passed

away from throat cancer. He was on NCIS. Yeah,

he was on NCIS Los Angeles. And I kind of thought,

I didn't know, because, you know, I don't know

the guy, but I didn't know, but I kind of thought

while I'm watching NCIS LA throughout the first

seven seasons, currently it's in its eighth season,

the last few episodes, wasn't really his his

voice was you could really tell something was

wrong he has done many many other things he was

in Robocop as Bob Morton he was in he was the

USS Excelsior helm officer in the search for

Spock he was in Justice League of America. He

was the weather wizard in that. That was 1997.

He was the voice of Martian Manhunter in Justice

League New Frontier, which was the 2008 DC film.

He was the vice president in Iron Man 3. So he

was the guy with the kid with the limb situation.

His granddaughter was in a wheelchair in Iron

Man 3. So he was the guy partially behind some

of that. For TV, he also has done, like we said,

NCIS Los Angeles. He was on a couple episodes

of Miami Vice back in the day. He was on an episode

of Tales from the Crypt, on several of those.

He was Aquaman in Weather Wizard and Superman

the Animated Series. you know he's done a bunch

of stuff but with him it's one of those things

where he was an actor that was known as soon

as you heard his voice you would know you wouldn't

know who he was like you wouldn't know him by

name but you would know hey that's the guy that

did this or that's the guy that did you know

what I mean yeah so it was that kind of thing

very very sad to see him go But yeah, so we've

got him in this. Who else is in this? We got

Tom Loken here as well. He hasn't done anything

in a long time. No. Michael Lerner as Bitterman.

James Rebhorn as Preston's dad. What I find interesting

about some of these movies in the 90s with the

casting is if some of these kids get out of acting.

They never go back they never go well some go

back not a lot do but I mean looking at Brian

Bonzal's Filmography here his debut was in 1986

on family ties as Andrew Keaton He also did let's

see He was on Married People, he was on The Young

Riders, Parker Lewis Can't Lose, that was an

Andrew Keaton role though. And obviously he was

pressed in waters in this. The last thing he

did was called Lily in Winter, that was 1994,

it was a television movie. But Blank Check is

basically the story of a kid who... Wants to

make his own rules. He wants to live under his

own house rules. He's tired of his dad's rules

he wants he wants money he wants this he wants

that and I Don't remember there ever being a

time in my lifetime as a child as a young you

know This kid's what nine ten eleven years old

at that age. I don't ever remember Any of my

family members Sending me or giving me a blank

check Yeah, I know but what I'm saying is like

this is I know this is a movie I know this is

you know, it's pretend it's make -believe but

that part of the whole movie is just kind of

unbelievable and then the fact that he goes in

and takes the beater the the quickly check because

Quigley gives him a blank check afterwards and

goes into his Macintosh computer, Apple Macintosh

computer, and kind of readjusts it and does...

He should have been going to jail for that. That's

technically check for odd. That's technically

forgery. You know, but he is only a kid. So he

forges this for a million dollars. bids quickly

on on this giant house and he buys all this kids

stuff which all of us would love to do if we

had that kind of money oh yeah I mean he had

a racetrack he had bouncy balls the house had

a pool he actually had a slide built into the

bedroom or the office or wherever where you slid

down from like the third floor of this castle

looking house and you know landed in the pool

so it's calling a water slide thing Had a limo

with a driver named Henry. And I swear I've seen

that guy somewhere before. After watching this

again, the guy that plays, the guy that plays

Henry, Rick D 'Couman, I assume I'm pronouncing

that properly, but I'm probably not. He was,

he was in the burbs. Yeah, he was in the burbs.

That's probably why you remember him. He was

also... Wow, he died 2015. Yeah. He also was

in diehard as Walt the city worker he oh he was

the guy That said the power remember the power

scene in diehard where they're like you got to

cut the power to the building You know he was

the guy standing in the sewer there In the manhole

cover and he was one of the prison guards in

space balls But yeah, wow, I didn't even know

that he passed away he was only 62 holy crap

So yeah, you got that guy. So as this goes along,

Preston obviously develops a crush on Shea Stanley,

who is supposed to be a bank teller, but she's

actually an FBI agent. Because the FBI is watching

the bank that Biederman runs, or Biederman, you

know, is owner of or president of or whatever.

So then the whole thing becomes a cat -and -mouse

chase between Quigley, Juice, and Biederman,

along with Preston, and Shea, and Henry, and

everybody else. And he comes up with this name

of, oh, this is Mr. Macintosh. And all he did

was he looked at the logo on the Apple computer.

Hey, if you're a kid, what other option do you

have? I know, right? I know, right? So yeah,

that's what happens there. This really does turn

into like a home -alone kind of situation I think

close to the end where that he's trying to get

away from all three of them all three of the

bad guys and You know he he sends sends actually

they send juice down that down the pool slide

He locks beaterman in this giant ball that he

hits hits him with with his race car and drives

around the track and knocks him into the pool

and not beaterman quickly does it to quickly

not be This movie just is kind of fun for me.

I know it's a bad movie. I know the plot is very,

very, very beyond thin, but this movie just kind

of brings me back to when I was younger, to when

I wanted to be the age that Preston was, you

know, wanted to have all that fun, even though

I knew I was going to get in trouble. You know,

I mean, I don't know. Who of us did not want

to do half the crap that he did in this movie

with that money? I mean, come on. What was your

reaction now watching this again? Just the amount

of fun that's in it. I mean, it's pretty clean.

It's kind of like, it kind of reminds me of Big

Fat Liar. But what caused Big Fat Liar? Right,

yeah Absolutely. Yeah only because of what it's

You know obviously turned into yeah But no, I

mean I like this movie I think that it's It's

definitely fun to watch as this kid just Royally

screws everybody with I mean more say screws

quickly. I mean everybody else that's associated

with him that you know, especially Especially

as a limo driver. Yeah kind of gets he's like

hey, it's been fun You know by the end of it,

but uh Yeah, it it was funny seeing tone loc

again though Because the last time I'd seen him

was ace Ventura. Yeah You doing too much now,

no tones not he's only worth a million dollars

right now I think the last time I saw him or

heard him in anything was um well yeah that but

was um Titan AE he was the voice of one of the

one of the aliens in Titan AE and the funny thing

is Karen Duffy who plays Shay Stanley she's 54

now she did this movie when she was 32 she did

not look 32 in that movie she looked mid -20s

I'd say But yeah, Toneloke, oh man. That guy,

he's... He was in Surf Ninjas, man. Yes, yes

he was, and that will be a film that we cover

on this podcast at some point. Which is funny

because in the process of going through my stuff

in my house, I found Surf Ninjas among my collection.

So that's definitely one we gotta do. Yeah, oh

yeah, that'll definitely be one we do, but it's

probably one we're gonna do next year, because

next year is the 25th anniversary of Surf Ninjas.

What's the... Oh, he was the bat eyewitness,

and he was the voice of the bat eyewitness in

Zootopia last year. So that was the most recent

thing he'd done for a movie. The last thing he

did before that was something called White Tea,

which was... I don't know what that was, but

that was 2011, so it was like five years between...

But he was on an episode of Uncle Grandpa in

2014, and then before that he was on three episodes

of Chowder. Yeah, he kind of goes, looking at

his filmography and stuff, he kind of goes between,

like in the last ten years or so, he kind of

goes either one year, two year, whatever, and

does things, or he'll go three or four years

in between things for Tone Loke. But I just kind

of love that guy because he's got a really really

cool voice and everybody knows wild thing, you

know Wow They use that needs been true. Yes.

Well, they had to I mean if he's gonna Yeah,

if he's gonna be ace's buddy, I mean come on

It'll be in this podcast somewhere. I need to

ask you a few questions I'm sorry I don't have

time for you or your ass but overall going after

watching this again what did you think even though

we know the plot is thin what did you think of

it did you cringe at any moments did you laugh

at anything what was your you know I definitely

well I mean I enjoyed the the fun part the kid

put in the house but I don't know. I just the

whole movie's fun. I mean Just from all the antics

and then the fact that he got away with getting

all of what he Had yeah with the house. I mean

For one the ingeniousness to perfectly get this

check through the printer. I know it is one one

Thing that even adults grown adults that have

had printers for years still can't do correctly

I mean, I myself have issues with getting you

know paper to go exactly where I want it But

uh And it's surprising that it could actually

do this and in what world would somebody take

a check that somebody hasn't written Yeah, well

just you know We'll just print it on here and

it's we'll just take your word for it. No idea,

you know for a million dollar check But um, no,

I mean that's it's it's pretty cool I definitely

like the fact that um How the whole thing plays

out and just the fact that the limo driver gets

to you know Just have fun along the way and then

he's just like yeah, I know it wouldn't last

but whatever Well, I think Henry knew the whole

time that there was no Mr. Macintosh. I think

he was just playing along. I think my favorite

scene with Henry is when they're driving and

Preston tells Henry to slow down because Shay

is running kind of next to them. Preston's like

oh you want to ride? I got this big limo. She's

like no I need to get back into shape and Henry's

like not where I'm sitting, honey Absolutely

love that And the funny thing about this movie

is as as I said before most people Can't stand

the movie most people hate it There's way a lot

worse movies that I could find it's pretty good

for a Disney movie Yeah, absolutely especially

for 1994 because the only thing they had I think

animated wise that year was that big hit you

know something about lions and kings and You

know sex in the stars and all that stuff The

funny thing is this movie as bad as everyone

says it is it made a hell of a lot of money Had

a budget I don't know what the budget was but

it debuted at number three at the box office

behind Ace Ventura pet detective and the getaway

with a 55 .4 million in its opening weekend and

in total It grows thirty point five million dollars

domestically in North North America thirty point

five million just in North America I don't know

what the national I don't know what the overall

worldwide is between that and between North America

and actually with thirty million dollars in 1994

is still a lot of friggin money to make for a

movie that everybody says is just one of the

worst movies ever. And people might be wondering,

but TFG and Mike, why are you guys even doing

this on MWIRE? Because number one, I always look

for films that are fun that we can talk about,

that we can kind of make fun of, but we can still

enjoy them. Number two, it kinda, you know...

It showed up on Hulu, and I'm like, oh, hey,

it's blank check. We got it. And I said that

it was on Hulu. I took a screencap of it, and

you're like, yeah, we got to do that for MWIRE.

So if anyone is complaining about this podcast

episode, blame Steve. It was his idea. I saw

the title when I was like, blank check. I was

like, MWIRE. And he's like, wait a minute. I

said, soon. Yeah, exactly. Oh my god. So we are

gonna have a bunch of new episodes coming for

NY this year in 2017 I had been trying to get

these done for the last few years, but the last

year and a half I was you know a little bit more

focused with my Relationship at the time that's

no longer an issue now. So there's that love

sucks. That's all so Love sucks and love is hell.

That's that's two things. I'll say about it.

It's just Watch the wedding singer Oh, yeah,

we did wedding singer I'm pretty sure if we sure

those dream by Adam Sandler spotlight Yeah, if

we haven't done the wedding singer yet, we're

gonna have to do a Another Adam said I think

we did I'm pretty sure, because I remember having

that in my DVD collection way back when. Episode

63. 63, okay, yeah, yeah, yeah. Awesome, awesome,

awesome. So, coming up on MWIRE is gonna, and

like I said, I've been trying to get this done

for the last two and a half years. It's gonna

be a lot of franchises. That we've never done

on M wire last year was M wire's seventh anniversary

because it's kind of goes along inside with the

creation of the network because M wire and to

cast classic we created along with geek cast

radio Kind of at the same time and launched them

all kind of at the same time and in seven years

now eight years M wire has not covered a lot

of things So coming up we've got the rocky franchise

all seven of those movies however many there

are I know there's rocky one through five and

then I know there's bell Boa and then there's

Creed one and two so our two is supposed to be

coming the Rambo franchise so that's gonna be

coming the karate kid franchise episode 135 is

going to be the force awakens inside rogue one

so we're gonna talk about force awakens and rogue

one in one podcast because we've already talked

about the other six movies plenty of times Oh,

yeah, by the way folks Star Wars episode 8 the

last Jedi We'll talk about that on on altered

geek on what our thoughts are of the title and

what that could mean and everything else Anybody

remember that Star Trek spotlight Steve tried

to we tried to get done and we never really did

it We did kind of like three episodes of it.

I think well I Kind of combined it all we're

gonna have two episodes Episode episode 138 is

gonna be Star Trek the original series film so

we'll talk about all of the original six films

or seven films or No, the original series was

the six films and the next generation was seven

to what eleven seven to ten seven to ten, okay,

the the 11 12 13 are are the Abrams verse which

will be a separate episode at some point Call

it the Kelvin universe, but I call horse crap.

Yeah Let's see, so yeah, that's that's what's

kind of coming up I've got some other special

things coming for my this year later in the year

I'm hoping by Christmas of this year. We can

get to episode 150 If we get to episode 150 before

or by the end of the year the next year My is

gonna completely kind of change. We're gonna

go do movies by decade it's gonna be a double

feature decade. So like episode one, just to

give everybody a little preview here of what's

to come after episode 150. Episode 151 and 152

are four films from the 1980s. Well technically

one of the films was from later, but episode

151 is Airplane and Airplane 2. Episode 152 is

Blues Brothers and Blues Brothers 2000. Now I

know Blues Brothers 2000 did not come out in

the 1980s, I know that, but they're each other's,

you know, sequels. So basically what I did was

I took, you know, two or three episodes and I

dedicated two episodes to each year of a decade.

So like we got two episodes from 1981 featuring

Arthur and Endless Love in one podcast and then

Stripes and Taps in another one. 1982 has Blade

Runner and Conan the Barbarian in one podcast

and the Dark Crystal and ET in another podcast.

So you guys kind of get the idea of what's going

to be coming after episode 150 of MWIRE. So that's

what's coming up. And yeah, I'm excited to get

back into NY, or I'm excited to have Steve, you

know, when... You'll come on when there's a movie

that you want to talk about. Steve's not going

to be here all the time. It's going to be a rotating

panel, as NY usually has been. But I'm sure there's

plenty of movies that I have in the NY list that

you'll want to talk about. Oh yeah. Oh yeah.

Bonesaw! He's ready. Yes, yes Had you seen and

I'm only bringing this up folks because he made

the bone saw Randy Savage Reference there had

you seen my my blog or my review of the the WWE

TMNT figures no So over Christmas playmate I

believe it's playmates and and who else playmates

and somebody else I don't remember they basically

took the four turtles Raph Mikey Leo and Donnie

and put them up in undertaker you know they did

it did it undertaker for Donnie they did John

Cena for Leo they did sting for Raph and they

did much of a man for mickey so you get much

of a man so it's great combining michael angelo

with randy the monster man savage it's absolutely

hilarious like he means that yeah absolutely

where is so so yeah folks that's going to do

it for and why are here episode one thirty one
