About this Episode

TFG1Mike and Mike Booninja Powers discuss Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy—a film that subverts the superhero genre by centering on ordinary criminals thrust into an extraordinary situation. They explore James Gunn's direction, the film's exceptional 70s and 80s soundtrack, standout performances from Bradley Cooper (Rocket) and Vin Diesel (Groot), and how the ensemble cast works together to make the movie succeed. They also touch on Gunn's filmography, the absence of traditional superheroes, and what they'd like to see in the sequel.

So you just don't realize What you do to me When

you hold me In your arms so tight You let me

know Everything's alright Hello and welcome to

MWIRE movie week in review. This is episode 115.

I am one of your hosts TFJU and Mike. Joining

me is Michael Bluth Ninja Powers. Hello, sir.

Hello. How are you? Good. How are you? I'm doing

pretty good, pretty good. I could complain, but

nobody wants to hear that. And and wire has reached

its 115th episode as far as the numbering goes

I know we've had more more content than that

overall in the past five years that this podcast

has been going oh my god I still can't believe

Steve and I and a bunch of other people on the

network have been doing this stuff for five years

or more holy crap And an episode 115 Steve wanted

to be here, but sadly It didn't work out uh...

and we're going to be talking about uh... rise

of the guardians that's right folks the twenty

fourteen hit film from marvel i'm sorry guardians

of the galaxy yes i know i stole your joke yeah

except you didn't run with it as well as you

should have wasn't rise of the guardians twenty

the christmas twenty twelve something like that

no one remembers that movie except you i think

all right um had you been exposed to any of the

guardians of the galaxy stuff before the film

at all did you read any of the original 69 comics

or the 2008 comics no i did not i mean i knew

who they were in in a vague sense um in fact

i think I could be wrong. I think one of my only

instances with them with the Guardians was in

the Fox animated series I think is it I Think

it wouldn't incur unless I'm thinking of something

completely wrong and I could be because everything

kind of gets fuzzy when you think about Marvel

and space comics, but Wasn't at one time one

of the Guardians I mean, I don't even know if

you know this maybe one listener as well or they'll

correct me But I'm pretty sure one of the Guardians

at one time was actually Cyclops's dad Alex summer

star jammer. Yeah Alex summers was yes That was

in the 92 x -men series. The team was called

the star jammers. I don't think he was called

Okay, see like a star jammer see when you get

mixed up when you get into Marvel space stuff

things kind of kind of hazy But no, I I've never

read a Guardians of the Galaxy comic I think

I may have seen Think I feel like they were in

one of the Avengers cartoons recently, but that's

mightiest heroes You're right earth's mightiest

heroes, and that's like the only place I saw

them, but I've known of them Okay Okay, so just

to get everybody clear now that I have this They

are mentioned by the dark surfer in an episode

of superhero squad. Nope know that They appeared

in the Michael Korovac episode of the animated

series in the Avengers Earth's Mightiest Heroes

In that adaptation the team consists of Star

-Lord, Rocket Raccoon, Groot, Quasar and Adam

Warlock They also appeared in Ultimate Spider

-Man Okay, then I was so alright. I would have

seen them there too then Okay, the episode titled

for them guardians of the galaxy the team consists

of Star Lord rocket Gamora Groot and Drax the

destroyer They were responsible for training

Nova in that episode Let's see they appeared

in Avengers assemble In an episode called guardians

and space Knights I still have yet to see Avengers

assembled or Avengers assemble I keep trying

to get through the first episode and I can't

do it Now there is going to be, I'll start this

off since I'm already looking at the television

thing, there is going to be a Guardians of the

Galaxy animated series. It is currently being

developed. The series takes place after the events

of the film, which we'll be talking about here

today. And apparently Thanos is going to be a

prominent character in that cartoon series. So,

there you go. Alright, yeah, I didn't know anything

about these characters. I think I might have

heard of Rocket Raccoon, but I never really paid

too much attention to it. Most people that have

listened to me on the GeekCaster2 Network on

various podcasts, this and others, know that

I usually stick towards the... top -tier characters,

and I'm not saying that Guardians are not top

-tier Marvel characters, but since the movies

have come out, stuff like, you know, obviously

Spider -Man. Spider -Man is practically Marvel's

flagship character. You know, Iron Man, I know

he wasn't exactly Number one top -tier character,

but he's become one Captain America the Fantastic

Four that kind of thing so for me when it comes

to movies it has to be something huge something

I know Not necessarily based on nostalgia or

anything like that. I mean let's face it Iron

Man 1 only came out six years ago so So when

Guardians of the Galaxy when the trailers first

started coming out and I Just to give everybody

a little bit of background, Steve and I actually

did try to record this episode by ourselves,

of MWIRE, and neither of our call recorders worked

that night. It's crazy. I said in that recording,

which failed, and I'll say here, for me personally,

a movie trailer is an advertisement to get you

either into the thing or to... if you feel indifferent

to it or if you just don't care about it right

off the bat um and i did not want to just sit

here and say oh guardians of the galaxy and what

you know whatever i i don't care because it looks

cool the trailer all the trailers that they had

put out look really damn cool it's just if i

don't know anything about the characters i'm

not going to sit here and spend what little money

i have to spend on a movie that i know nothing

about That's just not who I am. And I said I

could wait until it hits media, and that's what

I did. You, working at a movie theater, I'm sure

was different because you probably saw it while

you were working, right? Oh, yes. In not so many

words, yes. There was a night where it was my

job to watch that movie. There you go. You know,

so everybody is like... Usually when a lot of

my friends are are You know exclaiming. Oh my

god best thing ever in you know, whatever on

the internet and stuff It's like I'll look at

it. It's like okay. It's cool but I Have zero

attachment to it. So I went into this with zero

Expectations either way whether it was gonna

be good or bad. I enjoyed the movie. I thought

it was really cool I still prefer more iconic

Marvel heroes personally What was your experience

with the movie and the characters and all that

stuff? Well See, I have I had no prior. I mean,

I know The Guardian so I've never read a comic

with this. I had no basis for this movie When

the first trailer came out I made the comment

that this is as good as it's gonna get every

trailer after this is going to either portray

the movie in a worse light or is going to be

a or it's going to end up spoiling something

or it's just going to make the movie look bad

and In my opinion that was true it for me the

first trailer for this movie was probably one

of the better trailers I've seen in a long time

I knew nothing about these characters other than

their names. I You know, I knew the director.

I like James Gunn and it's a Marvel movie. It's

a Marvel to me now Marvel Studios pictures not

like spider -man or x -men right Marvel Studios

pictures to me are like the are in the same bar

as a Pixar film If you put that Pixar lamp in

front of something, I'm gonna go see that movie

Now the concept of it may bore me like a sequel

to said property or Something like that, but

I'm probably gonna end up with my butt in the

seat and see it in some way shape or form I like

in Guardians of the Galaxy to in my personal

experience to this year's Well, it's the movie

you don't like you probably still haven't seen

but I like it to this year to last year's Pacific

Rim You know, I still haven't last year's Pacific

Rim I The idea behind it was really cool I didn't

read a whole lot of like news or behind the scenes

or like rumors or anything like that about it

I just watched like a couple of the trailers.

I was like, you know what I'm in giant robots

beating things up. And the movie ended up being

really cool. Guardians to me was like the same

thing. I don't know anything about these characters.

I have no expectations. It was kind of like you,

but I just other than it's got to be a Marvel

movie. And I wanted to see if Marvel could. Basically

scare the bejesus out of every other movie studio

by putting a talking raccoon. And a tree that

says two lines in the entire movie. Three. too

he says i am grouped and we are grouped oh that's

it he only says two lines in a movie and make

it work and they did it and it's got to scare

the crap out of dc i honestly don't think That

DC at this point gives a crap. Oh, okay Okay,

let me refresh that DC is an entity of Warner

Brothers I honestly do not think that Warner

Brothers as the parent company to DC Comics gives

a crap Oh, I think they do I think because that's

why they moved Batman versus Superman after Guardians

open because then they're like now we're up we're

now we're up shit Creek mmm, and because right

up until that point DC was like oh, we're not

moving from the May release and Marvel's like

We're definitely not going to move. We'll put

Captain America 3 right up against Batman versus

Superman any day of the week. And then Marvel

released Guardians of the Galaxy and it opened

huge. I think I haven't looked up any numbers,

but isn't it like one of the biggest movies of

the year? And I'm pretty sure that's what made

Warner Brothers go, OK, we got to move. You don't

like because it is it's like they are. a Pixar

quality studio. You will never see a DreamWorks

movie come out opposite Pixar. You will not.

Because DreamWorks animation does not have the

same power as a Pixar film does. And that's what

I'm talking about here. That's why they're concerned.

And also, all the talk about... you know it taking

so long to put Wonder Woman in her own movie

and get her on screen and all this other crap

coming out of DC and you saw all those memes

like you know it was like the the meme of like

the studio exec saying oh you know Wonder Woman's

too hard of a character to put on screen and

then right below it is like Kevin Feige saying

oh we've got a talking raccoon in a tree you

know it's that was a joke and it paid off to

their success it absolutely did um now i want

to look at gunn for a second as the director

i've got his i assume it's his full filmography

but it could be partial because i'm looking at

wikipedia here according to wikipedia tromeo

and juliet in 1996 was his first writing slash

acting credit He also has writing credits on

both Scooby -Doo movies, Scooby -Doo 2, 1, and

2, the live -action ones, which, eh... I learned

that after re -watching both those movies on

HBO, uh, like two weeks ago? It's almost hot.

From 2008 to 2009, he did James Gunn's PG porn.

I have no idea. Nope. Uh, no clue. Uh, 2012,

he did Lollipop Chainsaw. 2013 he did movie 43

he was partial director and writer on on that

and then of course also 2013 Thor the Dark World

and then obviously this year Guardians and then

in three years from now he'll be doing Guardians

of the Galaxy 2 so an interesting filmography

for the guy excuse me yeah I haven't seen Very

much of his stuff like I saw slither and looking

at I'm looking at IMDB at his directors credits

I've seen Slither and that's about it. I knew

I mean I knew other people that were excited

that he was Directing this movie that they wanted

to see what he could bring and to me. I like

slither For me, I think it was like the cast

the people they started like pulling in to do

this movie That's kind of what got me on it other

than it just being a Marvel movie because it

definitely wasn't gun himself But I didn't hear

like James Gunn's voice or name go like uh him

like there was never never any of that It was

like alright, let's see what they can do because

after all the guys that did Captain America 2

Did Parks and Rec? and now they're handling cap

3 and Avengers 3 & 4 so hey more power to them

guys exactly Guardians on a whole as far as the

plot goes we have Peter Quill who gets abducted

by the Ravagers in 1988 and Peter is He is a

true child of the 70s and 80s also give him that

at least when it comes to the music because The

soundtrack to this movie is amazing. Yes and

you know I heard people you know again on my

friends on the internet saying oh my god the

awesome mixtape volume one is the best soundtrack

of the year and it's at that point I hadn't seen

the movie and sometimes I can you know go seek

out a soundtrack before I see a movie but it

really for me and I have to see how they use

the music in the film for me to really really

get into it and damn if they didn't use the music

so well yes they did they did um all right so

peter gets abducted by the ravagers um we he

then escapes um uh because he has this orb uh

i'm trying to I'm just trying not to screw this

up. I'm trying not to read from Wikipedia, actually.

He attempts to sell the orb, and Gamora comes

after him. The assassin Gamora comes after him,

who is sent by Ronin. The Nova Empire capital

world on Xandar. Gamora ambushes him. All hell

breaks loose. Also at the same time, we see Rocket

and Groot, correct? Yes. Yeah, they're on there

and I gotta say Rocket and Groot are probably

the two best characters out of the film for me

Yeah, and that's that that was the thing. They

made them believable. I Mean, it's it's kind

of nice seeing um, oh god. Oh What's his name?

Oh, yeah, it's kind of nice seeing a blue Michael

Rooker but honestly I can either see Michael

Rooker as one of two things, Rowdy Burns from

Days of Thunder, or what's -her -name's father

from Mall Rats at this point. He did a good job

as the character for The Ravagers, but it's just

so weird seeing some of the cast in this film.

Well, a lot of them were cast because they're

personal friends of James Gunn, and Rooker has

actually been in all of James Gunn's movies.

Mm -hmm, and that's why he ended up with a role

in this. I watched the commentary truck yesterday

in preparation for this What was the what was

on the commentary because I have not seen As

far as commentaries go it wasn't like super interesting

I find the most interesting commentaries to the

one where they have like maybe two or three people

talking about the movie maybe like the director

and some of the actors or You know a writer or

producer or something like that, but this was

just James and he was talking about, you know,

this, that, and the other thing, just about how,

like, certain characters came to be and, you

know, how he, how much attention to detail he

paid to, like, some characters, and he pointed

out, like, you know, the Nathan Fillion cameo

that, you know, a lot of people missed in the

movie and stuff like that, and, like, how people

got their roles and who people were, like, in

the extras and stuff like that. Like, all of

the Ravagers were his friends. That he hangs

out with on a regular basis and stuff like that.

So One that you were talking about quill for

a second and I just you know one of the things

that gunn said in the commentary and I you know

kind of didn't really hit me at the time, but

When I saw the movie, but I kind of totally agree

with this statement Guardians of the galaxy unlike

iron man and thor and captain america. This is

not a superhero movie. These are not superheroes

Right and that kind of didn't really know what

it actually said that or I hadn't heard that

said about Guardians I just thought it was like

a really good movie, but then he pointed out

that you know These aren't superheroes in any

way in in the conventional sense that a Marvel

movie is but he said that if Peter Quill had

one power It's his ability to completely blunder

something And then to completely recover from

it the next instance and when he said that and

then you watch the movie like everything around

quill is that way he blunders something and then

he immediately recovers from it like it's just

every story beat this is him blundering something

and then recovering from it exactly so now after

i watched the movie and i really thought about

it and i i know fans of this franchise are going

to kill me for saying this I don't think you

will, because I don't think you care that much,

but I know Steve is going to be shaking his fist

at his eye device or whatever he has to listen

to this cell phone or whatever. After watching

this two times, once when I first got it and

then once before, you know, in preparation for

the recording to refresh my memory on it, Star

-Lord is kind of like Captain Kirk. You could

almost have Chris Pine playing this role and

it would be the same kind of thing from the 2009...

I don't... Maybe it's because Saldana is in there

and she played that same kind of character in

the 2009 Star Trek movie. I don't think you can

confuse Ohura with... No, no, no, no. No, no,

no. You're right. No, no, no. What I'm saying

is between the two of them. Between Star -Lord

and Gamora and Kirk and Ohura. When they you

know when he seems to think that there's a bunch

of sexual tension between the two of them in

Star Trek That's you know it same kind of thing

happens here with Star Lord and Gamora a few

times I Don't know it's just something I alluded

to a little bit while I was watching it the second

time around I would liken Guardians more to Star

Wars than Star Trek Yeah, I will say that yeah,

I mean I and I and I and I will agree with you

on that This is essentially a space adventure

I believe the technical term is space opera Well

that too thankfully there's no There's no opera

anywhere in this movie. It's all 70s and 80s

music Well Star Wars is also classified as a

space opera as well true true So as we go along,

we meet up with Rocket and Groot, and everybody's

after this orb, and no one knows what the hell

the orb has in it. What did you think was in

the orb? Well, having seen more than one trailer,

I mean, I knew it was an Infinity Stone. I didn't

know what one or what it did, but I knew it was

an Infinity Stone. see I didn't I had only seen

a few trailers and I had none of them showed

me what was in it so I didn't know what the heck

was in the stupid thing all right let's see so

as the film goes on it becomes a chase for this

thing we find out that it is an infinity stone

and they're basically in this movie they're setting

up the Infinity War For Marvel, I mean, that's

what all the Marvel that's the thread running

through all the Marvel movies right now Anyway

is most if not everyone every other Marvel movie

has an Infinity Stone show up in it It wasn't

just necessarily this is our first like real

glimpse of right Thanos, but it wasn't I Don't

think this directly sets up Infinity War Well,

no, it doesn't directly set it up, but it It's

like this is this is my first reveal of, oh,

hey, that's where they're going. And Thanos,

let's talk about Thanos. Thanos doesn't do much

here. No, and they brought that up in the commentary

track. It was kind of like that was Marvel's

one thing. It's like you that Thanos has to be

in here like and you could remove him from the

movie and the movie doesn't fall apart. It just

ends up being like five minutes shorter. It but

yeah, he him being in there really is just that's

the that they needed to they wanted to introduce

introduce Thanos in this movie And that was that

was kind of like the one guideline Marvel Studios

gave gun was you know You need to have this scene

needs to be in here and they said they had to

work at it like repeatedly to get it right, but

So Ronan is the main villain here, even though

Thanos is the big bad behind the cloud. It's

a bad Fantastic Four joke, people. And basically

he thinks he can rule the world with this Infinity

Stone, and as we go along we find out not a lot

of people can touch the Infinity Stone. but apparently

friendship and holding hands and singing kumbaya

works i'm sorry i had to make that joke because

it don't you find that a little ridiculous though

that all of them as as the film goes on but by

the end of the film they all become friends uh

the crew and it's like Hey, if we all touch it,

it'll be you know, if if Star Lord has it and

then we all hold hands Everything is gonna be

okay. I think that's I but I think that's like

the same it's a classic interpretation of Anything

like good triumphing over evil like if you're

gonna hold this thing and use it for evil versus

Holding something that powerful and having pure

like intentions for it hence Start or quill seeing

his dying mother and actually accepting to hold

her hand on her deathbed Like I think I think

you know if you take that scene out of context

without like the scene with his mom sure It might

get a little hokey, but I think the movie builds

to that Slightly and definitely the icing on

the cake there is him actually accepting his

mom's hand who happens to be Gamora, but you

know and But he doesn't realize it's Gamora until

I've actually after he grabs her hand Just but

you see this kind of thing on a cartoony you

don't think twice about it But you see it in

a live -action movie and as an adult you're kind

of like And then you just kind of got a letter

Then you just kind of got to buy it like if you're

gonna buy a talking raccoon and a talking tree.

You got to buy this What was your favorite scene

out of this if you have one favorite scene, oh

man I Think I I like just about anything that

has rocket in it I'm the same way Rockets the

best thing out of this man. I remember there

was a lot of There was a some subtle uproar on

the internet as there always is When they announced

that Bradley Cooper was doing the voice of rocket

Because for whatever reason people don't like

Bradley Cooper Personally, I mean I like the

guy. I won't not see a movie just because he's

in it But for me I didn't hear Bradley Cooper

I didn't either. I thought he it was you know

his voice was that character I thought he did

a good job with that character. I don't think

that I Guess the compliment I can just say is

what I just said is I did not hear Bradley Cooper

Bradley Cooper is not in this movie. It is rocket

through and through Absolutely and the same with

Vin Diesel doing Groot. I mean I get a disagree

on that. I don't have I don't have a problem

with it, but I still heard Vin's voice. I heard

Vin's voice through, like, the way that Iron

Giant had Vin's voice. Yes, exactly. But I didn't

hear, like, Vin. It's not the same guy that's

in Fast and the Furious. Yeah, no, it's not,

you know, I live my life a quarter mile at a

time. No, no, no, it's not that guy, but I still

heard the tones. I've also heard that the way

that he had to deliver his lines is that He had

a script, like there was a script that was written

for Groot as if Groot was an actual character.

It could speak many words. And so he could follow

along with what was going on in the scenes, but

he had to answer everything with I am Groot.

So he had to find a way to interpret an entire

line of dialogue as I am Groot. That's just amazing,

though. And you really think about it. It's just

amazing because what's like. And again, I know

listeners are gonna kill me for this, but Groot,

with only being able to say, I am Groot in the

various ways he says it, you need everybody else

around him to do exposition. Like in that first

scene when we see them and he's drinking the...

the water of the fountain and and Rockets like

yes you did I saw you and he just kind of shakes

his head and grumbles he doesn't even say I am

Groot he just makes a noise he's like why you

you know Rockets like why are you lying you know

this reminds me so much of Transformers Prime

Bumblebee before he got Will Friedel's voice

at the end of the series because Bumblebee was

nothing but a series of beeps through the whole

cartoon series is basically R2D2B and this exact

same thing happened is what you're talking about

where they actually wrote out you know a script

for Groot you know actual lines but he can only

say those three words they did the same thing

with Frank Welker I found out when I interviewed

Simole Montano who is the voice of RC from Transformers

Prime that there were words that Bumblebee could

have spoken but And Frank did say them, Frank

Welker did say them, but they just went back

and put beeps into it and had everybody do exposition.

I don't mind characters like this. And Groot

is a very heartwarming character. He really is.

For this being the first time I've ever really

seen him or known about him. They did an amazing

job with that character. I think my favorite

character, though, is Ronan. Really? And I say

that because he's played by Lee Pace. And my

experience with Lee Pace is the guy from Pushing

Daisies. That's Lee Pace to me, Ned from Pushing

Daisies. I don't know if you've ever seen that

show. I've heard of it. I've seen maybe the pilot,

but I haven't seen much of it. Basically, it's

a guy that can bring things back to life with

his touch. And so what he does is he's a pie

maker because he can take bad fruit and make

it good fruit. So he buys all the crappy you

know, fruit that people have thrown away and

he touches it and becomes good fruit and then

he can make all these delicious pies with it.

Well, he does this. He adventures in Sue and

he ends up being coming like part of a detective

group and stuff like that. But he's a really

kind, you know, heartwarming, loving kind of

guy, I guess. And in Guardians, he plays Ronan

and he also plays, you know, a jackass in the

Hobbit movies. It's interesting to see him in

these more hardcore roles after seeing him in

pushing daisies Yeah, but I did like the character

and I'm You know if it's a spoiler, I'm sorry

But I'm really I'm really starting to get irritated

that Marvel is killing off all of their villains

In their movies because eventually you're just

gonna end up with a bunch of superheroes and

no villains And then are they just gonna start

pointing the finger at each other? No, I don't

think so I think that and people please correct

me if I'm wrong as we've already stated in this

podcast Neither one of us have read the comics

for Guardians I know some people might say oh,

well, that's you know, you should have prepared

and read the comics and I wasn't going to read,

you know nearly Five decades of comics to prepare

for this one movie for me I think it's where

they used Ronin as I don't want to say a red

herring but they used him as a one -off character

to set everything up they used him to set up

the infinity stone they used him to set up the

larger threat of Thanos kind of like how they

used the The Chitauri army in Avengers I just

but see there's a difference between using an

army and using a character like Ronan Ronan to

me I believe there was a miniseries in like the

mid -2000s. That was like it was a Ronan Nova

Silver surfer it had something to do with the

cosmic entities of the Marvel Universe and Ronan

was one of those cosmic entered entities I Don't

see how you kill a cosmic entity in one movie

like It's kind of to me especially with Guardians

Being so loosely tied to the main cinematic universe

like it exists in the same universe But not anywhere

near the same place, right? I I'm more it's to

me killing off Ronin feels kind of like killing

off Darth Maul in the first Star Wars Like I

feel like you could have used him as like the

Guardians villain Especially since Thanos is

just being set up to be the villain Like I feel

like Ronan could have been You know, they're

like a mainstay like maybe Ronan finds a bunch

of henchmen to fight them in the next movie or

something like that Maybe yeah, he was a puppet

for Thanos, but that doesn't mean he can't be

the villain for the Guardians But again, I could

be wrong. I don't I didn't read those comics

and I don't know. I don't know I'm not familiar

with the character. I'm just tired of seeing

Marvel villains getting killed when I don't think

they should I mean I'm still waiting for the

red skull to show back up because that was I

mean every single one of them has died Yeah,

so It's bummer. Well, they all seem to be throwaway

leading up to this one villain Isn't Obadiah

in jail? I know that's six years ago. I thought

he was just no I thought he died. I Thought they

just made up an excuse for him to be gone I don't

remember I don't remember Do we have anything

else on the plot? No, I mean, it's a pretty standard

space thing, you know guys Everyone wants this

thing. The heroes are trying to get it to save

the save lives and the villains want it to kill

people. Yep So going over the cast, let's talk

about Rocket himself, Mr. Bradley Cooper. First

time I ever saw him was as Will Tippen in Alias

from 2001. Now, I know you don't like Alias at

all, but that's the first place I had ever seen

him. He was in Nip Tuck. He was in the Hangover

movies. He was in Limitless. He was Faceman in

the A -Team. I'm just looking through his His

stuff here the place I would have seen him the

first time Probably would have been failure to

launch in 2006 Hmm interesting cuz I mean I've

seen wedding crashers, but I didn't see it when

it came out So failure to launch would have been

the first time I saw him and I don't even remember

him failure to launch so I don't even remember

him in Wedding Crashers, and I've seen that movie

several times. I don't remember him in Nip Tuck

either, and I've seen all of that, so... This

isn't going so well. No, but, I mean, I'm saying,

you know, I like the guy. He's a great actor.

He's... I would say since... Maybe since his

Nip Tuck days from 2007 and now, he really has

become... No, nope a team pun intended. He really

has become a face of Hollywood at this point

because after a team he did limitless He did

the hangover sequel Both of them. I hope there

are no more sequels to that damn movie And Coming

up I believe at the end of this year, I think

it's coming up later this month He's got American

sniper that's coming out Obviously, he'll be

in Guardians 2 as Rocket. I just like the guy.

He's got a really cool... Again, the most I've

seen him act is in all X number of episodes of

Alias, and he was damn good in that when he was

in there. So moving on to the next one down the

line here. We've got Chris Pratt who is Star

Lord aka Peter Quill I Haven't seen him in my

like I see all the stuff that he's been in But

like this is the first time of me actually watching

a movie of his See, I'm looking through this

and first of all see I've seen It's all wanted

don't remember him wanted I don't remember him

in Jennifer's body for obvious reasons. I don't

think anybody remembers that movie exists. Well,

I remember that movie exists. I don't remember

him in Zero Dark Thirty or Delivery Man. Like

the first time like for me when he became like

a thing was the Lego movie. And then and then

Guardians. Obviously, you got Guardians. I've

never seen Parks and Rec. and now he's like showing

up everywhere he's like in dress world and just

he's the new it guy yeah and apparently he it's

been announced slash rumored that he's gonna

be in a new Magnificent Seven movie mm -hmm so

Zoe Zaldana Guardians Avatar Star Trek Rosemary's

Baby TV miniseries. Oh my god. Oh boy. Colombiana.

The Losers. Yeah, The Losers. I like that movie.

That's the movie that made me think that... Oh

my gosh. I can't think of his name. It's another

Chris. Chris Pine? No. Captain America. Chris

Evans. That's the movie that made me think Chris

Evans could play... Captain America. She was

also in the very first Pirates movie, Curse of

the Black Pearl, in 2003. Now, I gotta say, I

wasn't... Not that I have anything against the

character, but I was shocked to find out that

friggin' Batista is in this movie. Because I've

only known him from WWE. Like, I haven't known

him to be in a lot of, like, high action blockbuster

L .A. movies, you know. He was in Riddick in

2013. That's all well and good. But for the most

part, he is a wrestler to me. He was in the Scorpion

King 3, but does anybody even... He was in Smallville.

Was he? Yeah. Holy crap. I guess I'm gonna have

to go back and watch smallville because I don't

remember that episode is from 2006 I'll have

to go back and watch that one then because I

did not remember that at all Yeah, I the first

time I ever saw him because I don't follow wrestling

I did for like two years back I actually according

to his little thing here his career was from

2004 to 2014 So I for me, I think he started

in wrestling when I stopped watching wrestling

So I would explain why I don't didn't know who

he was until he showed up in Riddick and everyone

was like, oh my gosh He's in Riddick and he's

amazing. And I mean every I liked Riddick. I

thought it was fantastic see I What did you say

2004 to 2014 see I first got back into WWE specifically

2006 -2007 and one of the main reasons was because

of music depending like I think 2007 they I think

one of the WrestleMania themes for that year

was saliva's ladies and gentlemen that was one

of the reasons why I got back and I know that's

so cheesy and whatever else but I kind of got

back into it after being away from it for years

and years and years and I like Batista. I think

he's a great wrestler. I think the storylines

that he was given in the matches that he had

had was all well and good. But part of storylines

recently when he was back before he left WWE

again to promote Guardians was Have you ever

watched the real world like the MTV thing? Yes.

Yeah, I mean not yes Okay, I know what it is.

Have you have you seen the New York season? The

the tenth season the okay in in the tenth season

when they went back to New York there was a guy

on there called Mike Mizanin or Mizanin whatever

the hell his name is but he is known as the Miz

on WWE and in that season he's like oh I want

to be on the WWE and I want to be WWE champion

and he had one of those replica belts and everything

else so the Miz started a feud with Batista and

everybody else started a feud with Batista when

he came back this year to WWE saying, oh, you

need, you know, just the standard stuff. Oh,

you need to go back to Hollywood. Go back to

making those movies and blah, blah, blah, blah.

And I'm like, what movies? What Hollywood career?

Again, all is I had known him from was was wrestling

as Drax. He does a damn good job. Yes. I mean,

the guy can I mean, What little acting there

is for the character, but he can act Um, I mean

acting's not just delivering your lines. I mean

true But yeah, no he was fantastic Absolutely

Um And then there's Groot And good old Vin Diesel,

uh, this guy is been everywhere he's been in

everything his first movie role according to

imdb was an uncredited role in 1990s awakenings

wow um you know we already mentioned the iron

giant boiler room pitch black knock around guys

um a man apart triple x um and then of course

he has the fast and the furious movies um You

know, so and Again, you know We talked about

it a little while ago, you know You want to talk

about some acting chops, even though it's just

a boy. I believe it was just a voice role I don't

think that was him in the tree. That wasn't a

suit, right? That was all CGI Yeah, well, I mean

there was a guy there at a blues feel like in

a blue suit so that people had something to act

against kind of like right if you've ever seen

the behind the scenes for Star Wars and Jar Jar

Binks It was kind of the same thing. But no,

he was not there on set in a blue leotard. No,

both him and Bradley Cooper, their stuff was

all recorded in a soundstage. Even just as a

voice role, again, he had already done the Iron

Giant. I'm sure he's done other voice stuff in

the past, and he just knocked it out of the park.

Anybody else you want to hit on for the cast?

No, not really. I mean, I wish that Was it Karen

Gillan, I wish she had a larger role but apparently

she will in Guardians of the Galaxy 2 I like

the way that her character looked and I like

that actress but you know, she's primarily from

Doctor Who and she was she's in the cancelled

selfie So For me overall I dug Guardians It's

still gonna be a franchise that I wait till it

hits media release I mean Even though I've now

seen the movie and I do enjoy it and I think

it's a great movie. It's just not Like I said

the beginning of this podcast There has to be

an Iron Man. There has to be a Captain America.

There has to be you know, something big For me

to go to the theater to see a Marvel movie at

this point, but what I mean, I guess What counts

as a big Marvel movie then I don't understand

what I don't understand how Guardians couldn't

be considered Guardians 2 Couldn't be considered

just as big of a Marvel movie as like the next

Iron Man or I'm not saying it's not I'm saying

for me character wise For me to go to the theater

To see a Marvel movie. It has to be an Iron Man

a Captain America and Avengers that kind of thing,

right? So I'm just I'm asking what does it take

to make for Guardians to be that like? How does

this movie not make them? Bring them to that

stature. I Don't know. Is it cuz they're not

superheroes? No, it's nothing to do with that.

I'm just I Because because they are they technically

are a form of superhero. I mean Star Lord can

hold his breath in space for crap's sake without

his mask. It's not scientifically impossible

Well true, but I don't know what it is. It's

just I Don't know. I don't think it's that they're

not superheroes. I just think that it's It's

not that I Want to see those guys? I don't know.

It's just it's not that I want don't want to

see him on the big screen but it's one of those

things where I Would rather see probably ten

other movies before that on the big screen dang.

I don't I don't know no I'm not I'm not saying

the movie is bad, but okay look at my fandoms

turtles Transformers say what you will about

those movies, but you know Iron Man the Avengers

Captain America You know spider -man When is

Guardians 2 supposed to come out 2017 yeah, and

then The BS that is BVS is 2018, right? Or is

that still in 2017? I'm sorry, what was that?

The BS that is BVS, Batman vs Superman. Oh, that's

2016. Oh, okay. Well, I'll say this. At this

point, with how much bullsnot we've gotten with

Batman vs Superman, I may end up seeing Guardians

before I see Batman vs Superman. That's a good

four months in between movies, four or five months.

Yeah, true. Overall, what did you think? I really

liked it. Like I said, it was to me, it was this

year's Pacific Rim. And that's as high a praise

as I can possibly give it. You know, right now,

I was just completely. Was I was completely surprised

by the movie I didn't know about the characters

going in I've been the first trailer blew me

away and the music for this totally drives The

entire thing I don't know I don't know if you

if this movie would feel the same without that

score well without that soundtrack Oh, absolutely.

No, it would it wouldn't at all. I Just I feel

like this is like the first the the perfect combination

of you know, the right cast the right directing,

writing, and music, like all around. I feel like

it's a perfect storm of a movie. And it's a good

movie. It's fun. It's a movie that I feel like

I can just put on and just let go in the background

and kind of enjoy it. And it's really got some

memorable one -liners in it, like every good

movie should. Let me ask you this do you think

rocket can support his own movie not that they

would do this, but do you think he can? No, I

don't think so I there's I'm Seeing I don't really

care for the Avengers like in Marvel. I like

I like the Avengers, but I don't like Like Marvel

is something great. They made me like Iron Man

and they made me like Captain America like in

the comics I can't stand those guys by themselves

like in Justice League like DC characters the

only guys I can really like stomach by themselves

is Batman everybody else I need to see them in

like a Justice League style setting they have

to have the other characters to play off of Otherwise

Batman ends up becoming like or not Batman Superman

ends up becoming too good of a like goody -two

-shoes for me, and I want to vomit But you put

them in a in a circle full of all these people

have different strengths and weaknesses and personalities

and you get to see them like Riff off of each

other play off of each other and I feel like

guardians had that in spades um, and so I don't

know that I would like to see You know a movie

a two -hour movie where rocket is just mad at

everybody By himself with no one to keep him

in check That would be amazing. I mean it hasn't

really worked. I mean people thought that People

think wolverine can handle his own movie And

maybe because it's like Hugh Jackman, people

will keep thinking he can handle his own movie.

But I don't get wrong. I like the Wolverine.

I liked it better than X -Men Origins Wolverine

by a mile. Yeah. But I still don't think they're

like as good as they I don't even think they're

as good as they could be. And I don't know if

that's because you can't they can't adapt the

Wolverine content the right way or they're not

telling the right stories. I think that's what

it is with that character. Like they need to

find the right story to adapt. for Wolverine

to for people to really take notice of Wolverine

you know something like Old Man Logan or Enemy

of the State or you know something like that

I would love love to see if the next solo Wolverine

movie I would love to see an adaptation a live

-screen adaptation of Old Man Logan Just don't

want I wouldn't want to see old man Logan if

it couldn't actually be done the way it was in

the comic Which is true. It's not possible at

this time Well, yeah, you have to know we have

to know that Marvel has script treatments for

old man Logan or when you know the inevitable

future when they do get those movies back, I'm

gonna get the rights of those characters, but

Yeah, I that's true. Yeah, I think I think Rockets

kind of like a Wolverine Yeah, he's great when

he's got people to keep him in check and to play

off of but when you put him in Then again, I

don't know rocket raccoon that well. I don't

mean I don't know him outside of like a group

I just don't see myself enjoying it Like I don't

enjoy Wolverine by himself as much as I do when

he's you know, the elder person at the Xavier

Academy But Because then at least there's a dichotomy

there. You can see how feral Wolverine is. Wolverine

looks a lot more feral in the X -Men movies because

he's next to other people that are sane. Versus

when he's in his own movie and all you're seeing

is how crazy he is. Then all of a sudden crazy

becomes normal and so there is no differentiation

between the character. True so true, and I don't

know that if that would work with rocket What

are you expecting to see out of Guardians 2 or

what would you like to see out of Guardians 2?

As much as I'm looking forward to Guardians 2

I don't know that it'll have the magic that the

first one did cuz that's kind of that That was

kind of it right you we didn't know these characters

We didn't know what it was gonna look like what

I'm what I'm looking forward to is seeing more

of the galaxy that Gunn and his production team

worked out and how that fills in and where they

go and what areas of the galaxy they explore.

Just looking more forward to seeing that. I don't

really think we're going to get the same type

of movie again. Yeah. Yeah, for me, I think it's

going to be interesting to see where they go

as well, because we were only on Earth for one

year. I mean, well, not a whole year, but like

1988, that was the only time we saw Earth in

the entire movie. That's fine. I don't need them

to compare. No, I know. I know that's fine. I

know it happened on Earth in 1988 until now.

I'm just saying that it would be interesting

to see if they ever go back and see what, you

know... Have rocket actually meet up with a real

raccoon that'd be funny I think you'll see I

don't think you'll see something that minute

like yeah, but I think you'll see I Know guns

talking something like you know get the Guardians

of the Galaxy will never touch the standard Marvel

Cinematic Universe And there's like back and

forth you know everyone's you know one person

say this the other person saying that but you

know Everyone's gonna come headlong into Infinity

War so it'll it'll be interesting to see how

that plays how that plays out because you know

when as far as we know when Quill got taken there

were no superheroes and now there's a bunch of

them so I shouldn't say there's a bunch there's

like six well you know if Marvel ever gets the

right stuff and whatever I I just I'm actually

what I don't I don't know if I want more I know

this is gonna be sacrilege to a lot of people

but I honestly don't know if I want Marvel to

get the rights back to X -Men to spider -man

to All these other things because look how much

they have to play with right now They have Iron

Man Captain America Hulk not that they're gonna

do another Hulk movie the Avengers at large I

think what it is is just them being able to craft

a better Finally, actually being able to bring

their comic to the big screen. Yes, they've achieved

that, but there are parts of their comics that

they're missing, like big parts of them. Granted,

X -Men isn't as big of a part of all the Marvel

books as Spider -Man is to Avengers, but it is

a small part of it. I wouldn't be surprised to

see Chris Pratt show up in Agents of SHIELD as

Quinn. Quill, you know Well, he is screamed about

it on the internet that he wants to so they've

all screamed about it, but they want to I'm just

saying like they're like I I think you'll see

Benedict Cumberbatch show up in the Marvel Netflix

stuff as dr. Strange Mainly for two reasons one

those characters are dr. Strange's peeps Plus

Benedict Cumberbatch is used to working in a

TV setting from his work on Sherlock, and obviously

Chris Pratt is used to doing Parks and Rec, so

I think you'll see him guest on Agents of S .H

.I .E .L .D. and that might be how you kind of

get your intro, you know, get your fix, I guess,

I don't know. I think I would rather see... and

this is just me just completely hating on Agents

of S .H .I .E .L .D. even though I have not watched

it since the... Seventh episode of season one.

I would love to see rocket come on to agents

of the shield and just shoot them all to pieces

That's a money problem there. I know I know I'm

just saying Are you looking forward to or do

you have any expectations for the upcoming Guardians

animated series? Are you gonna be checking that

out? I know nothing about it other than it's

coming if I Remember that it's even on I'll probably

try and catch it What would you give the film

overall zero to five stars? Four. I think I'm

gonna give it a 4 .5. There wasn't really too

many things in Guardians of the Galaxy that upset

me. There wasn't too many what the fuck kind

of moments in it. If I really want to be nitpicky

and say the reason why I'm taking a half point

off of it is because of the whole breathing in

space thing I don't think any movie can really

pull that off properly. Well and in the movies

defense again, he wasn't breathing No, I know

but and you should probably do like some science

homework because that's possible to exist for

a very short amount of time if you exhale yeah,

and I and I understand that but I just It always

it always looks wonky to me. Well, I don't know.

I think it's the whole the reason why it always

looks wonky to me is because you really have

to constant like for me, I would really have

to concentrate on not. You know, exhaling. That's

the thing. And it's like, I just don't know how

these people can do that. But see, I guess I

the only reason I'll give it a I mean, I guess

I could give it a four and a half. But I'll stick

with my original four. The only reason I won't

is because I don't like throwing around fives

willy nilly because I don't think this is like

five is like reserved for something like that's

like my all time favorite movie. Right. And those

are for me, those are like American Beauty up

in the air, stuff like that. I mean, the highest

I could possibly go is four and a half because

it's not I mean, it's it's a good movie. It'd

be like in a, you know, it I'm sure would show

up in many a list, but it's not like I reserve

fives for you know movies of like American Beauty

caliber not Guardians Right, right All right.
