Mount up we got the call Hello and welcome to
M wire movie we're gonna review about you by
the geek cast or radio network I am one of your
hosts TFG and Mike and joining me once again
is Doug Abel from talking about my generation.
Hello, sir Hello, how are you doing good doing
good? Mm -hmm. We are rocking and a -rollin'
here on Mwire. My goal is, people have asked
us on other podcasts and everything else and
other comments on geekcastradio .com as to what
Mwire's gonna be covering here and there. Honestly,
at this point is my goal is not necessarily,
it's grab bag, but it's not necessarily. Grab
bag for the hell of it. It's as I said when Steve
and I did episode 107 the five -year anniversary
show which we talked about frequency with Kavisa
and Quaid I had said there that I want to Talk
about movies that I love movies that I just absolutely
love watching whether they're bad movies or whether
they're great movies or because there are a lot
of movies out there that are that are bad that
I still think in my own personal opinion that
are very good that I enjoy them. So, you know,
oh yeah, you know, I, I guess I'm a glutton for
the guilty pleasure movies. Um, so my goal with
M wire is we will be doing some spotlights here
and there. I don't know if they're gonna be as
frequent as they used to be. There are a number
of films that I realize in MWR's five, almost
six year history that we have never covered that
will get coverage at some point, but my goal
is to kind of like, not necessarily be the Howard
Stern of movie podcasts, but basically... When
you guys go to geekcastradio .com and you see
the latest MWIRE which we are now back on Saturdays
the original day of airing for MWIRE I'm basically
advertising MWIRE now as the Saturday matinee
podcast Because I know a lot of people well at
least a lot of people I used to know Loved going
to Saturday matinee movies and everything else
So, you know, when you go to geocacherator .com
on a Saturday, and you're like, hey, I wonder
what NY is up to, and you see something like
Swat from 2003, or something like 1996's Fled,
or something like Throw Mama from the Train,
or something like Dread from 2012, or our Halloween
episode this year is gonna be Beetlejuice. You
know. Not necessarily gonna get a shock, but
you're gonna go I didn't think that they would
ever get to that movie You know that that kind
of a feeling that's kind of what I'm going for
but I'm also you know looking at it as hey What
are movies that I've watched that I absolutely
love that we haven't talked about yet And that
works for me man. There's there's so many of
them that I want to cover on My generation that
it's just like damn we got to get to them. Yeah
You've been doing that show for a year now, right?
Yeah, a little over a year. Yeah, see, we've
had five, like, originally, and I know listeners
have already heard this, I could just point you
in the direction of episode 107, but originally
I told Steve, I'm like, okay, well, a movie we
can review, let's just review a movie a week,
and we can just go through our DVD collections,
and that's kind of what the beginnings of the
show was. I was like... Okay, this would be fun
to talk this this this and then I think the very
first like full -on Spotlight we did was the
Marvel movies way back when this was like episode
10 11 12 13 14 15 16 somewhere around there way
back in 2009 of MWIRE After that we had done
the Batman movies up to the point of Dark Knight
And you know we would eventually go on to do
Superman and all this all that but um But yeah,
you know my my goal with M wire is to just you
know Have fun with it talk about a movie that
we absolutely love each week Yeah, I read as
much as in the which one was it in the oh Duh
last episode when we did the Thomas Crown affair.
Yeah As much as I don't care for the original
I'm also thinking about Going back and doing
some you know looking at some older film like
really old like Recently on another one of our
shows, Talking in Circles, they did an episode.
Episode 31 is their action hero draft. So it's
kind of like, what if those three hosts could
each have a team of expendable characters? As
far as the whole craze of the expendables and
whatever else. Greg, on that show, picked a team
of James Bond, Michael Knight. bullet and uh
oh god what was the what was oh god i gotta look
at the other ones um basically they they picked
all action heroes and and they made movie posters
out of these things and his was called oh i know
what it was his is called delivery men Um, and
it was, it was really awesome. It was a great
episode of the podcast. It was actually the first
time I actually listened to one of their episodes
all the way through. Um, oh, that's what it was.
It was, um, it was McQueen, Hasselhoff, Connery,
Statham and Cage. So basically, uh, Bullet, Bond,
Michael Knight. Frank Martin from Transporter
and Memphis Reigns from Gone in 60 Seconds. So
I don't even know where I was going with this
whole line of thought here. Yeah, so looking
at that and you know he had mentioned Steve McQueen
and I've heard so much about Bullet and I wanna
see it, but watching the older films outside
of, like, the Three Stooges and the Thin Man
movies, it really scares me because, like, I
didn't like the Thomas Crown Affair. The original
Thomas, like, it just wasn't my thing. So looking
at some of these older films... really does scare
me. I'm not going in with any preconceived notions.
I'm not gonna go in and trash a movie. That's
the point of NYR right now at this moment in
2014. Films that we absolutely love or films
that we haven't really, like in my, you know,
me personally, I haven't ever seen. So, you know,
I'm trying to expand my movie palette As it were
and this time around we're gonna be talking about
2003's SWAT Did you see this in theaters, uh,
you know, I'm trying to remember if I did I think
I did I think my dad dragged me to go see it
and he wanted to go see and I thought this is
gonna be awful, you know Well, I mean cuz most
at the time you had a lot of the TV series that
were becoming movies and you know You had things
like bewitched which was god -awful You know,
so I was my expectations were really really low
for this movie and then we went to go see it
and I'm like Damn, this is pretty good The 2003
SWAT is obviously based off of the 1975 television
series starring Steve Forrest, Rod Perry, Robert
Ulrich. SWAT was before my time. It really was.
It was five years before my time and it only
lasted two seasons. It only got 37 episodes in
a row. It only got 30s. I'm really surprised.
I mean, like the 70s and 80s for television,
I mean, it was a melting pot of cheesy cop shows
or, you know, over dramatic kind of drama these
and everything else. And I'm really surprised
SWAT only lasted two seasons. I mean, I really
am. So I know the theme song, and I've heard
of it and all this and all that, and I know of
the original theme song. What is absolutely hilarious
to me about the 2003 film is that they got Hot
Action Cop to do an updated... It's called Samuel
L. Jackson, but... It's based, you know, they
start off with the you know, but they start off
with it and then they go on and talk about You
know part of the movie and everything else But
this movie I I love this movie. I don't think
I saw this in theaters in 2003. I'm sure I Honestly
don't think I've seen this in the theater. I've
seen it multiple times on video DVD and more
most recently when i watched it was on uh...
it was on stars or something or other yeah i'd
i'd think that's the last time i thought maybe
it was on like affects or something but or no
i'd know i haven't seen on regular basic at all
it's like on stars or uh... uh... you know it
was it was all of my movie package channels like
that oh yes so so i didn't have to watch the
uh... you know TV version Yeah, although I have
to say it wasn't all that bad I mean, you know,
there were certain things that were cut out You
know all the swear words and everything which
that happens and seeing some of the guys get
shot that happens But you know other than that
it wasn't too different from what I saw, you
know, so I mean it wasn't bad right All right.
So as we said came out in 2003 It is starring
Samuel Jackson Colin Farrell Michelle Rodriguez
LL Cool J Jeremy Renner is in this I believe
this was the first role I'd seen him it like
this before he got His big push. Yeah to where
he is now And hot damn I liked him in this I
thought it was great him playing the bad guy
Yeah, I was I was a little surprised and how
he was being kind of an ass in this film and
I was kind of like, okay And then just to see
him kind of switch up. It was it was kind of
like this isn't bad I really kind of like him
playing like this So You are going to hear the
trailer and then we're gonna come back with or
you're gonna hear a couple of clips or something
I don't know if I'm gonna actually put the full
trailer in here But you're gonna hear something,
we're gonna come back with thoughts on the overall
plot of the movie after this. Alright, we are
back here on M Wire. So, Jim Street, played by
Colin Farrell, who is a former U .S. Navy SEAL
and hotshot cop from the Los Angeles Police Department,
and his SWAT team are sent to stop a gang of
robbers who have taken over a bank. So this is
how we open the movie. Jim Street and Gamble.
I think it's Brian Gamble, I think, is his name.
Yeah. Oh lord. They made Jeremy Renner a Corrupt
cop white man's version of Brian Gumbel. Oh My
god, so they go in and I do remember I do remember
having the DVD of this movie and I do remember
watching the special features the director was
saying at the time they were looking at the LA
police riots and they wanted to kind of mimic
that as far as the the opening scene with the
chopper going around and all the radio chatter
that you hear and everything else. I really do
like that. I thought that was interesting. Basically,
they go in, they get a hold order, and they obviously
gamble, disobeys the hold, shoots a hostage to
get the bad guy, and the shit just hits the fan
from there. Yeah. What did you think of the opening
scene? You know I thought it was pretty awesome
Especially when you consider that the guys who
showed up there when they were first coming out
you see these guys Wearing body armor that are
coming out and battling against the cops. I mean
it they literally this is Art imitating life
in this respect because they actually did have
this happening with the LAPD at one time And
the LAPD actually started running into a gun
shop to pull out Assault weapons from the gun
shop that were being sold to take down these
guys with these with this body armor And it was
just it was amazing to see that they actually
pulled this in and did it It was I really really
enjoyed how they put all this together and they
actually brought you into the action. You kind
of got that the You know thrown into the heart
of it and the guys are you're seeing bullets
flying around you type of thing I really like
that feel Mm -hmm. Yeah, absolutely. I love that
high -action feel without their really be like
You know gunfights and car chases and car crashes,
and you know cars crashing into buildings It's
all high adrenaline stuff, but this movie in
this opening scene. It made it feel like it was
in slow motion Yeah, I mean you know he does
the role he does the shot hits the hostage hits
the hits the the bad guy and You know Bob's your
uncle They go, this actually reminds me of something
that was eight years prior to this release, Speed.
It reminds me a little bit about Speed and Keanu
Reeves and everything else, but I still love
this. I love this look at the LAPD SWAT team,
even though it's a fictional version of the LAPD
SWAT team. Now around this, well, actually about...
Three years three or four years after this I
had gotten into all those reality shows on A
&E like Dallas SWAT Detroit SWAT where you actually
see the the actual live you know the the real
SWAT team so that This movie you know three or
four years after it released on you know in theaters
and on DVD and everything else kind of you know
started a trend where you would have all these
all these SWAT reality shows which is kind of
nice and it's kind of something a little different
and a little bit more educational than most reality
television is. Yeah. I mean, anybody and their
uncle can have a towing reality show or a show
about, you know, hey, we're a famous family.
Let's have seven seasons of a show and whatever
else. Let's put our drama to the world or whatever
else. But no, this movie, the opening scene and
then you kind of get the calm down scene where
you see that Gamble and Street are in trouble,
obviously. This scene reminds me of the Top Gun
scene where Goose and Mav are in trouble. Obviously
neither Goose or Mav had to snitch on each other
and Street doesn't snitch. Right. You know, Street
doesn't, you know, rat out his partner, although
everyone assumes that he did. And I think that's
interesting about the Street character is that
they portray him as this strong, silent type,
and you don't really know what he's gonna do.
But he's not, you know, he's no 1987 Dolph Lundgren
as He -Man. I mean, Colin Farrell is an actor
who has a lot of muscle on him, and he is in
shape for this movie, but they kind of mask it
with a lot of his fashion in the film, which
I think is a cool way to do a character like
that, where you have the strong, silent type
here in Street, but he doesn't have to be...
The big surly strong like the literal sense of
the word of strong silent type So as as this
is going on obviously street and gamble split
up You know their partnership is no more gamble
goes off and does God knows what we then switch
to Alex Alexander Montell Very unfortunate last
name Bet that's his middle name Alexander Montell
Williams Who is a who is a French drug lord who's
coming back into the country to kill his uncle
and he gets caught in doing this by Driving his
uncle's car that he basically stole even though
he says he borrowed he basically stole the car.
Yeah Don't they stop him for for a broken taillight?
Something like that. Yes, something like really
idiotic. Yep Yep, and then and then they look
at the registration and then they you know, they
have to call it in and everything else and they
detain him and He ends up in jail what I like
about this movie is how they have the two plots
that are really separate in the beginning you
have the whole plot with Street and Gamble and
then you flash forward in time where Street,
you know Went ahead and took the cage job And
I guess obviously gamble Went off on his own
outside of the LAPD And I What I love about this
is how it's two completely separate plots, but
they slowly once Hondo comes in when Samuel Jackson
comes in the plot slowly gradually Start to mold
together. Yeah, because I mean it's all it's
really like watching two separate movies. It's
you know, it's like You know, you've got the
left hand over here and the right hand over here
and neither one of them have anything to do each
other and then at some point somehow They meld
together so well Yeah, they it was This was a
well -written film. I gotta say because of those
two plots that came together and you know you
are seeing kind of what's going on with the drug
lord and you're starting to see what You know,
you're kind of seeing this other path with Street
and you know him going through SWAT and going
through kind of the training well I shouldn't
say training but like getting into all the special
weapons and tactics things they're doing and
You see them kind of developing him up as this,
you know rookie character. I guess would be the
best way to put it Mm -hmm, and then you see
in the background you see everything that's going
on with Montel and Him, you know going to jail
and screaming out that he's gonna pay 100 million
dollars to anybody who can rescue him You know,
I love that, you know, cuz I would have thought
that somebody would have cut that off You know
that if it was any real news story that we've
done Oh, no, no. No, we're not gonna allow this
to be aired at all because we don't want that
to get out But no, no Yeah Yeah, I just love
how he says it. $100 million to whoever gets
me out of here. And it's like, you know, it's
just like, wow. And I think the only other film
I really have seen this guy in, the guy that
plays Montel, what's his name? Oliver Martinez,
I believe is unfaithful with... god what's the
name of that actress um oh god what is the name
of that one um there was it was richard gear
and uh let's see richard dianne lane that's what
it was um You know that was really the only other
movie I had seen him in and that was actually
a year before this But I like him as a bad guy.
He's pretty you know you see him you you see
him come into the to the restaurant and you know
he's being all nice and Next thing you know slit
yeah, and he just walks out with you know with
He plays a damn good bad guy. Oh, yeah Yeah,
I don't know what it is with these French guys.
They they seem to play just these evil villains
Yes, but he pulls this off so well Yeah, absolutely
So we've got him being jailed and as this is
going on Hondo You know kind of looks at Street
and he kind of knows like he wants Street on
his new SWAT team is that that he's gonna have
um... and you know he gets straight out of the
cage, has them go driving for him and they're
going driving around uh... looking for the other
team members uh... i believe the first one they
get to is the guy that won't eat an american
hot dog this is your straight laced by the book
cop that doesn't like rookie like this guy Reminds
me something out of police academy. Honestly,
I mean this guy I could totally see that You
know and he goes through and you know I Could
see something like, you know, just you know saying,
you know, give me a hot dog with ketchup That'd
be fine. But no this guy goes through An entire
menu of ingredients he doesn't want on it or
he does want on it. And you can clearly tell
he's not SWAT material. He looks like he's better
suited for Wall Street as far as his physical
appearance than anything else. So we get that.
And then the next guy we get to is... Mr. Mama
said knock you out. He shows up in the weirdest
places. Last time I saw him before this movie
was 2002. 2002's Rollerball with Chris Clime
was in Rollerball. LL Cool J. I love him. He's
a great actor. I like some of his music. Even
though I haven't really gotten into the series
from the beginning I've seen several different
episodes over the years of NCIS Los Angeles with
him and and D 'Artagnan himself Chris O'Donnell
I should say Robin. Yeah, you know And I like
them in that show. I like the character that
LL Cool J plays and this one here Plays another
damn good character and he's chugging after this
guy I mean like full -on sprint and it was absolutely
amazing so we also get on the team we get boxer
and TJ and the final one they go to meet is a
guy by the name of Chris Sanchez only Chris is
not a guy and Chris is not attached to Vin Diesel
this time around. Oh Come on now. Oh Yeah, come
on now. So yes, Michelle Rodriguez as Chris Sanchez
and she's I I don't want to say Spitfire cuz
I feel like I'm you know talking from the 50s
She's one hell of a lady cop, and because she
has too many complaints, they won't allow her
to try out for SWAT. And I think it's also because
of Captain Fuller's very narrow -mindedness that,
oh, she's a girl. She doesn't need to be on SWAT
kind of thing. Captain Fuller, I know I've seen
him someplace. I really do. But I just can't
remember. Larry Poindexter, what an unfortunate
last name to be saddled with. Larry Poindexter,
I swear, when I saw him in this movie, I was
like, where have I seen that guy before? Did
you ever see American Ninja 2? No. Once I saw
him, I looked him up on IMDB. I'm like, oh shit,
yes, I remember him now. I I'm looking at his
I think it might have been criminal minds or
bones that I've seen an episode of him in I'm
real like I'm looking at like I don't recognize
anything That he's I mean I recognize the shows
that he's done, but I don't recognize his characters
From the shows that he's like I mean I know all
about resilient aisles. You know so yeah, you
know but really don't he's one of those actors
that he has a voice and a face I know I've seen
it somewhere before but even looking through
here I there's nothing in this that tells me
maybe the TV series Las Vegas maybe I remember
him from that but other than that I mean everything
else I do not remember like I don't remember
seeing him in anything else other than this movie
so Captain Fuller has basically you know this
this very narrow -minded view of who should be
on SWAT because because Street is on his shit
list he doesn't want him on there because Sanchez
is a girl he doesn't want her on there but Hondo
says I'm putting you on there and I'm putting
her on there just to piss the captain off And
that's something I loved Hondo just his whole
character any the man Like I don't even care
about getting a credit card, but the man makes
me want to call capital one It doesn't any role
Samuel Jackson ever plays and I know lately he's
He's all about the fury and the Marvel movies
and all that and everything else, but holy crap
anything this man does is Amazing. I mean this
guy this is one of those actors that could sit
there and read the damn names out of a phone
book and you would just be amazed at what this
guy does. He was shaft for Christ's sake. Yes.
Well, and it's funny that you mentioned him reading
names out of the phone book because just before
we did this, I happened to find, uh, I happened
to find his narration of the book, Go the Fuck
to Sleep. He's like all the kittens are asleep
my dear why the fuck won't you go to sleep? After
spotlight on Samuel L Jackson go the fuck to
sleep So, Hondo gets his team. So it's Hondo,
obviously team leader, Street, Sanchez, Deke,
TJ, um, crap, Boxer, you know, TJ McCabe, Boxer,
and... Yeah, I think that yeah, it's boxer TJ
Deke Chris and in street. Yeah, yeah and They
go out and do the training and I love the way
Jackson and Farrell interact. Oh, yeah, like
they're like their characters. It's so well done
I love that about their Kelly when they're on
the training range is like don't beat them so
bad that I can't get a rematch Okay, whatever
hey man, that's my money man, you know Yeah,
I Love how each character is very different from
like you these are basically Five or six people
that you've essentially most of them picked off
the street Pun intended. Yeah, you know, you
know picked off the street and you know it really
oh god reminds Seven strangers This is essentially
what would really happen if SWAT had a real -world
season on MTV And they all come together they
do this training and obviously Street wins Because
he's an excellent marksman. Oh, yeah So they
come together they do that They go out on a call
But the guy who was barricaded in his house And
this invention that Street has been working on,
you know, this guy, you know, they say over the
radio that the guy is, you know, he's hearing
aliens and everything else. This whole thing
with this hook invention that Street has come
up with is that, you know, you shoot it into
the wall and you pull a wall. Okay, the analytical...
the side of my brain that says oh my god this
makes this movie so fucking stupid because it's
questioning me what's making me ask this question
is that is that like the LAPD has to pay these
people back right like i i know they're criminals
but you can't just just i mean it it's like superheroes
you can't just go around destroying people's
houses without having some sort of repercussion
right right so we get this and and We see the
guy in the house going around going around and
all of a sudden He sees the two hooks come in.
He's like it is the damn aliens. I was Absolutely
love that scene So we get to gamble gamble being
the one that gets Montell out And that that's
where the two plots written, you know, that's
where the two plots of the movie really, you
know a line and we get to the fact that you know,
the SWAT team is gonna go in and obviously secure
him and deliver him to the prison and Gamble
and his team break him out They then have to
chase Gamble and his team Through the sewers
and train tracks and everything else and I'm
telling you when they were walking up to that
train. It's speed all over again. It really is.
I'm not saying that to mean it to be bad at all,
but like seriously, I really, you know, this
is drawing an illusion of speed. So they go through
the train, they go down into the tunnel and of
course, once you get below The train tracks of
course the radios aren't gonna work which leads
fuller to oh well they're in on it They're gonna
help him escape and whatever else of course We
see gambles city Claymore which obviously street
tackles Deke and saves him from setting off the
trip wire and and Montell is like what's the
matter didn't you hear something? No, that's
the problem So they put a chain lock on this
fence that leads out of this drainage tunnel.
And Street goes back, gets the claymore, blows
the door open, and we get to the big final scene
where we have this plane coming in on the 6th
Street bridge. Yes, and there's actually a really
funny story about this. I remember actually seeing
the night that they were filming this. where
they're showing them at the 6th Street Bridge.
There was a car chase that was going on, LAPD
was chasing these people, and it was all over
K -Cal 9. And they actually, you see the guy,
and he's hauling ass, and all of a sudden he
comes right up through the 6th Street Bridge,
drives right through the movie set, almost clips
the plane that's sitting there on the 6th Street
Bridge, and just keeps going right through, and
you see like the film crew is standing there,
and you see this, this is all taking place from
a chopper view. But you can see the film crew
standing there and going, uh, what the fuck is
this? Is this in the script? I mean, you could
you could see them literally doing that and kind
of going, what the hell just happened? It was
all was so great. And and the news reporters
are going, oh, yeah, they're going right through
a filming. Yes, there's apparently a new movie
coming out that they're going to have a plane
in it. And so when I saw this scene, I'm like,
oh, shit, I remember this. Oh, okay. So overall,
I love the plot. I love the characters. I love
the actors. The fact that Street and Boxer actually
have some sort of anti -chemistry against each
other because Street is dating Boxer's sister.
I do love that. You know, Samuel Jackson. just
amazing LL Cool J and Matt. All of the actors
in this movie are really great. I didn't mention
this, but in order for them to get past in the
earlier part of the movie, in order for them
to be approved to be the SWAT team or to be the
premier SWAT team, they have to do the course
with the airplane. And Apollo 440's time is running
out. It starts by... I love that scene! Oh, yes!
I freaking love that scene. I love the look on
Fuller's face when part of the somebody shot
and they missed and it hit the window where the
where the observation people are and Fuller's
like, holy shit. Glad that wasn't a real bullet
because yeah, I love that scene. I love everything
about this movie. What are your overall thoughts
on the plot the characters it was a lot better
than I expected it to be the characters were
The only one who I really didn't care much for
was Michelle Rodriguez. It was I mean Partially
was just because I felt like she was just there
and she was this, you know tough Latina cop type
thing But everybody else I thought did just a
really great job even a little cool Jade that
surprised me because that was really my first
time seeing him act other than toys and Yeah,
toys was coming in, you know See him actually
act and he was funny. He was good. I was really
surprised by this I thought holy shit. He he's
good at this, you know, and of course you got
Samuel L Jackson who's just ah Shit, we gotta
go in after these guys now, you know, I mean
he's just good in everything he does honestly.
Oh, yeah I mean, really. The only time before
this movie, as I said, that I saw L. Cool J was
Rollerball. He was in Charlie's Angels as Mr.
Jones. He was in Any Given Sunday. He was in
Caught Up in 1998. But before that was his television
series. In the house from 95 to 99. Yeah, he
played Marion Hill. I love that show See and
I have to admit I never saw it. I knew that it
was on but I just never saw it I oh god, I love
that show. It was so that really shows his His
comedy it really does I mean, we're not going
to sit here, folks, and go through all these
people's filmographies. Renner has gone on to
have an amazing career. I do want to highlight
on Josh Charles because this is Mr. Knox Overstreet
from Dead Poet Society. Chris, Chris, I love
you, Chris from Dead Poets Society. I knew every
time I see Josh Charles, I know I recognize him
because I like his voice. I like the way he looks
as far as his roles or anything else. He hasn't
really done... He was Detective Fowler and Four
Brothers in 2005 since SWAT. Recently like I
mean he had brief and he had a role in brief
interviews with hideous men in 2009 and He's
got bird people this year that like it's been
five years since he has done anything Well, I'm
gonna step in just a little bit. He has been
showing up on the good wife and he's had quite
a few episodes there uh... my dad well yeah i
don't know yeah i mean as far as film also sorry
five years since he's done films but well for
the last five years he's been will garter on
the good wife yet you're right uh... but i'd
always right every time i see my like hey it's
the kid from dead points this is one of the kids
from the board society uh... you know colin farrell
He plays so many awesome movies. He really does.
There's there's so many Colin Farrell movies
that I really enjoy the recruit with him and
Pacino What else? See one of the few that I think
that he bombed in and I don't think it was necessarily
him I just think it was bad writing was when
he played bullseye and daredevil Yeah, hey at
least it's one of the only movies that might
be the only movie he actually uses his original
his real Irish accent in true so He was in horrible
bosses So there is that. He was in Epic. I don't
know if that's saying anything. He was recently
last year in Saving Mr. Banks, the thing about
Walt Disney. This year he's got Winter's Tale,
Miss Julie, and Solace. Next year he's got The
Lobster. For television he was on Scrubs for
an episode. He was on falling for a dancer for
an unknown number of episodes probably just one
But I mean, he's a reason really good actor and
I love him in these types of roles. Yeah He's
really actually pretty good. I mean, you know
with the exception of him being picked up for
total recall in 2012 I know that one and daredevil
probably the worst ones that I've seen him in
I've liked him in everything else. He's a great
actor. Yeah. And I mean, we'll be here talking
all night about the man. Oh, yeah. I mean, the
dude pulp fiction. Yeah. You know, he's got his
filmography is a mile long, started in 1972.
Oh my god. Patriot Games, Fathers and Sons, the
original Jurassic Park. He was in The Meteor
Man. Oh my god, I can't believe he was in that
movie. Like I said, Pulp Fiction. Assault at
West Point, The Court Martial of Johnson Whitaker.
187. My favorite that I've got to mention. Where
is my super suit? Don't mess with me, woman!
God, I can't wait till they do that sequel. Like
I already said, Shaft, Rules of Engagement, Star
Wars Episode I, Out of Sight. I forget who he
plays. Well, it says it right here. Ira Henry.
He was uncredited in that movie. Coming up he's
got and of course he's you know obviously like
we said Nick Nick Fury in the in the Marvel movies
he's got Let's see. He's got reasonable doubt
this year. He was in RoboCop Barely lethal Kingsman
the Secret Service and obviously the next one
for Fury after the Winter Soldier is Avengers
Age of Ultron And according to Wikipedia, he's
in pre -production for Tarzan in 2016. I have
no idea what he's gonna be doing in Tarzan. 3D
action -adventure film directed by David Yates,
written by Stuart... Okay. Um... What? Why? No.
Do I even want to ask? Oh, the young guy. Okay,
no. I saw the last name and I'm like, wait, no.
Like, no, you cannot have... ...Stellan in that,
but apparently Alexander Skarsgard is gonna play
Tarzan in this movie. Okay, I can see that. You
know, I'm not... I just saw the last name and
the first thing I thought of was... Jerry yeah,
Jerry from Jerry from Good Will Hunting, and
I'm like Stalin stars don't know yeah Natalie
Portman's professor in for But no that'll work
you know overall swat amazing movie has a really
cool Soundtrack to it It really does. The music
in it is really cool. What is so interesting
and kind of, it's kind of sad that iTunes doesn't
have this right, but the score does have Time
is Running Out and Samuel Jackson by Apollo 440
and Hot Action Cop on it. So those songs will
be in this episode somewhere. What I want to
talk about now before we kind of... Get out of
here for this movie Is the kind of behind -the
-scenes stuff for this one because this is interesting
at least to me Directors that had to pass on
this movie because They were all busy with other
projects Michael Bay Rob Cohen Antoine Fuqua,
Michael Mann, Joel Schumacher, Tony Scott, Zack
Snyder, Roger Spotswood, or Spottiswood, and
John Woo were all approached to direct the film
before Clark Johnson signed on. I'm happy that
this is a Clark Johnson film, honestly. Yeah.
If this was Michael Bay's SWAT, the explosions
would be ten times bigger and ten times as many.
And the shaky cam would come in and it would
just buck the hell out of all of us. Yeah, we
had enough of that in Bad Boys. You know, so
those are the directors. Stars that were supposed
to be on this. Mark Wahlberg was the first choice
for the role of Jim Street but turned it down.
I like Mark. I like him as an actor. Post...
Boogie Nights. But I can only see Colin Farrell
in this role. Paul Walker was originally cast,
and had even started training for the part, but
had to drop out due to filming Too Fast to Furious.
This probably would have been a better movie
for him than Too Fast Too Furious. Well, that's
a discussion for another day. Yeah. Colin Farrell
eventually replaced him. Vin Diesel was offered
to play Deacon DK. I cannot see, like, I cannot
see that. Yeah. I do. He passed because he was
in production for Chronicles of Riddick. At one
point during the early stages of development,
Arnold Schwarzenegger was considered for the
role of Hondo. But he declined and Samuel Jackson
took the part. Thank God. I love Arnold in the
Expendables movies. I really do. But oh my God,
there's no way Arnold could play Hondo. Hondo
has the fin - like, even if it wasn't me saying
this because it's Samuel Jackson, but Hondo as
a character seems like he has that finesse. He
has that sarcasm. And Arnold is... Straight over
the top rope. I'm not saying he's a straight
laced actor or he's not, but I mean, he is so
over the top that it's beyond belief and it would
have ruined the role. Yeah. I mean, the whole
Austrian accent would have just killed it for
everybody. It would have been like, no, no, no.
Why can't you get to the chopper? Yeah. But overall,
love SWAT. I think it's a really, really fun
movie. It's interesting to look at it, and I'm
very glad that we did here in this episode. We
are going to take another quick break. You're
going to hear some ads and some other stuff.
We're going to come back with final thoughts
and ratings after this. I'm Colin Baker. My name's

So, Chuck, Greg, what are you guys thinking for
this week's show? Well, Dan, how about we just
talk about the things that we've read or watched
this week? We do reviews like that every week,
Chuck. How about a game like Factor Fiction or
The Power of Names? Those are great, and we're
always coming up with new ideas for games. And
how about some top fives? You know how I love
my top fives. What about... Tournament style
brackets or sequel reboot and destroy who will
win in a fight taking too far crazy, but true
news or yes It appears we have lots of things
to work on Listen to talking in circles taking
timeless topics in new directions every Tuesday
on iTunes or geek cast radio .com the geek cast
radio network Hey, Dan, who's the guy with the
creepy voice? So we are back here on movie week
review for episode 111 SWAT. Final thoughts for
me, I love every bit of this movie, I love how
it starts where you have a falling out and then
you have the rebuilding of, you know, St. Eustace
rebuilds his reputation and Hondo comes back
from something or other and, you know, obviously
we go from there and we also have this counteracting
plot with Montel Williams and everything else.
and uh you know you've got all that going on
and then the two plots converge and it just becomes
a chase and i dug it i thought it was really
cool i absolutely love it um i'm not gonna do
this but if i was going to do this the only reason
why i would take a half point off of this movie
is because of the damage to the To the mental
guy because the guy was he wasn't a criminal
he was he was um What do they have what do they
call it in um police jargon? Um, he was a 51
50 Yeah, mental mentally ill patient or yeah
They have some cold mmh something or other, uh,
but it's it's mental health Yeah, I've some something
rather but honestly This movie is perfect. It
really is from beginning to end. Everything is
enjoyable. Um, you know there and what's so good
about this? I know you said you don't like uh,
Rodriguez's character and you don't like her
being in the movie. But what's so cool about
it is they didn't feel the need to constantly
like there's teasing between her and straight.
Oh, yeah. She's not a like she is a member of
swat. She is not A female love interest for any
of the, I mean, hell, Deke's married, Hondo's
married, Boxer's married, I don't know what the
deal is with TJ, because obviously TJ double
-crosses them and joins Gamble. But I'm really
glad that they didn't make her a love interest
for Street or any of the other characters. So
for me, between the action, between the music,
You know all of it. I love this movie gets perfect
five out of five stars. What about you? Okay,
I am gonna give it Yeah, you're probably gonna
be pissed off at me for this. I'm gonna take
off that half point because Only because the
plane flying in the whole thing with the plane
at the end that just seemed really Unbelievable,
I mean, you know, you've got this plane coming
in low and it's gonna land in the middle of the
city to get them out That just seemed a little
far fetched for me. How are they going to be
able to pull this off without nobody noticing?
You know, granted, you know, all of the cops
were out running around to all the other airports
to stop them and try and catch them if they took
off. But it was still just a little unbelievable
because of that. But other than that, you're
right. I mean, it was a great movie. It was this
was a kind of a sleeper movie hit for me because
I didn't expect it to be anywhere near as good.
I expected it to kind of fall flat on its face
because there were a lot of things that were
coming out that were Movies, you know based on
TV shows as I said before I I thought you know
this is not gonna hit well and Surprise surprise
surprise You know if you take this one, and you
put it next to another TV show movie that came
out right around the same time I believe it was
um Little thing with Owen Wilson and Ben Stiller.
Okay, I take I take this over that any. Oh, yeah.
Yeah Yeah, start being a hutch Yeah, that was
just that was just poking fun at star ski and
hutch. This was more It was more serious and
I will I will give you that any day of the week
I mean, well, I did like the ending of Starsky
and Hutch when they're obviously the original
Starsky and Hutch. I mean, I will I will say
that one thing about that movie is they really
did allow Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson to really
emulate the original characters and really keep
on their their main personalities and it was
a decent you know TV movie adaptation from the
TV series but there's some stuff in that movie
that is just way, way too unbelievable. With
The Plane, I'll give that to you, you're only
taking a half point off. I mean if you were gonna
sit here and say, you know, oh it's only gonna
get one and a half stars that it's a terrible
movie, then I'd have a problem. But you know,
it's like... The plot came together well, the
action scenes are well executed, the music is
great, the acting and the characters are great.
One little nitpick isn't, you know, in a half
a point. I mean, it's still four and a half stars.
I will say that there was a sequel that came
out, a video sequel. None of the original cast
members reprised their roles. So I've actively
ignored that, even though it is on Netflix. Yeah,
this will be like Atlantic Rim or something,
you know, Sharknado 2. I have a feeling it will
be just as bad Some movies do not need sequels
Some movies just just don't need sequels Alright,
so thank you for joining us here on MWIRE. Where
can they get in touch with you or look at your

episode of MWire. I wish you'll join us next
time. Next time, it's going to be myself and
movie role Dan. He's gonna make his return to
MWire. And we're gonna talk about 2012's Dread.
We're also gonna briefly talk about in the intro,
1995's Judge Dread. Good luck with that. The
main focus of the episode will be on the 2012
Carl Urban, you know, Dr. Bones version, but
we do we. It's kind of like this, you know, we
didn't really go too far into the series of SWAT
because I frankly don't remember it. I remember
the theme song. That's about it. Yeah, like I
said before my time. So we'll go into Judge Dredd
just a little bit. But like probably in the intro,
but the main discussion obviously is going to
be the 2012 Carl Irvin Dredd. And then after
that, I think we're going to do a little spotlight
in the remembrance of a certain actor that recently
went to heaven. So we may be doing that. Halloween
this year, as I said, we're going to be doing
Beetlejuice with movie revolt Dan and myself.
And then after that, it's going to be Ben Affleck
and Uma Thurman in paycheck. Yay. I kind of dig
that movie. That's an interesting one. So, all
right, keep those film reels rolling and we will
catch you next time. If you would like to leave
