About this Episode

For their five-year anniversary episode, the hosts revisit Frequency, the 2000 sci-fi thriller starring Dennis Quaid and Jim Caviezel as a father and son who communicate across time via ham radio during a solar disturbance. They discuss the film's unique time-displacement mechanics, practical effects, the Nightingale murders plot, and how the film manages to be both emotionally resonant and thrilling without excessive exposition.

Hello and welcome to MWIRE movie week in review

I am your host TFJoneWike and joining me is Steve

Megatron. Hello Hello, what the hell am I doing

back here? I thought I quit this show. No, you

didn't come on now This shows five years old.

You can't quit on me on the five -year anniversary

show because it is Friday, July 11th 2014 MWIRE

has been Online since 2009 since the birth of

the geek cast radio network in five years. We

have released Just north of 190 items on iTunes

Or just south of it actually 31 or two of those

are the M wire weekly episodes that started this

year And this is episode 107 this is our five

-year anniversary show for M wire And sadly,

it's not going to be X -Men. I know everyone

was looking forward to us doing an in -depth

on X -Men, Days of Future Past, and the rest

of the X franchise. The crew that I was going

to put together for that, by the time it came

to recording, no one had the time to do the show.

And it had been about a week and a half since

I had seen the movie. I'm old, sometimes my memory

doesn't retain everything it's seen on a big

screen. He's old! He's like dirt! He's like fly

paper! I know! I'm old and crotchety! You old

shitbasket! That's two episodes this week that

we've had old man impressions on. This and Command

Center 44. Are you shitting me? No! Well, get

ready, there's gonna be a third one. Oh boy.

I ain't getting into it. It's gonna be funnier

than hell. I was in on the inside of it so I

got to see. It's gonna be freaking hilarious.

Oh lord. So sadly I know there were some people

that were looking forward to an X -Men in -depth

episode. We might come back to that once it hits

DVD honestly. Once it hits DVD or digital and

I can actually see it again, I will say that

I did like what I saw of the movie. I'm glad

that Bryan Singer is back behind the helm of

those movies. Kind of, you know, can't wait to

see Age of Apocalypse or whatever they're...

I guess that's the name. I'm not looking at any

info right now for it. Yeah, it is. Well, I don't

know I don't know if it's age of apocalypse or

apocalypse now because it's X -Men apocalypse

That's what it is. That's what it because it's

like age of age of apocalypse was the comic book

storyline, but they didn't want an age of because

Transformers and because something else and it's

Marvel It's age of Ultron. Yeah, that's what

it was that all that and transformers 4 just

had it So they didn't want to go that route.

Yeah, but that doesn't So for our five year anniversary

show I recently found this movie on my DVR well

actually found it on cable DVR'd it and I'm like

hey Steve do you like frequency? Yeah I like

frequency. Okay let's do that then. Frequency

is a 2000 science It's kind of a science fiction,

kind of a fantasy almost type thing. Yeah, it's

a sci -fi fantasy film. But it's almost a thriller

too. Yeah, it could be anything. So that's what

we're gonna be covering. It's gonna be a fun

discussion. I love this movie. I've always enjoyed

this movie. I like these movies that kind of...

We all know that we love time travel, or most

of us do. Oh, wait wrong one. Yes time travel

not not Twilight Zone And especially if it's

done in a DeLorean, but it's just one of those

things where Even though logically the movie

the the events of the movie should not work They

just do and I have a lot I have I have a lot

of fun with this movie. I really do. But before

we get to that, we have a new iTunes review.

This is both for regular MWire and MWire Weekly

as well. Take it away, sir. Alrighty, so it's

a five -star review, which thank you very much.

It says choose carefully. It's by Man in Time.

Almost back in time. Oh Oddly fitting. Yes Well,

I mean if you're nostalgic, that's actually a

good title He says, I've written a few reviews

now for podcasts on GCRN, and this is one of

their better ones. I enjoy what they call the

weekly episodes the best. Good place they get

caught up on movie news. Some of the reviews

are okay, too, for the most part. They tend to

be best when covering comic book movies, but

even movies like 12 Years a Slave and Her, they

did a great job on. I love that they cover all

types of movies and not just what you would expect

for a geek show. Even the classic Thin Man series,

that was a pleasant surprise. Okay, here's the

thank you so much man in time. Here's the thing

The thin man series is I'm gonna be the next

two episodes episode 108 109 Will be the conclusion

to the thin man series of films? New I am by

far no means a thin man. I am you know, you're

basically Jake and I'm the fat man at this point

I'm like Jay and you're Silent Bob. Except you

talk more than I do. Oh god. Yeah. That's nuts

dude. I am a fat Jay Muse and you are a skinny

Kevin Smith. Oh my god. Wow. Here, let's put

that in perspective for ya. So thank you so much

man in time for the review we greatly appreciate

it everyone else go over to iTunes leave us reviews

We greatly greatly appreciate it, you know, and

it was kind of you know, let's talk about this

a little bit I know you had a more specific envisioning

of MWire which would eventually become weekly,

which is going to become something else at some

point. Yes, it will be transformed and transcended,

but I had to throw that in there. The seeds of

the future lied buried in the past. More or less.

So when I first envisioned MWire, it was going

to be like weekly. because the funny thing about

it is, and forgive me if some of you have heard

part of this story before on the 65th episode

of Geekcast Radio, but when I first envisioned

it, I was a part of TF Wire, which was Transformers

Week in Review. They were looking for new podcasts

and I kind of developed More or less three different

podcasts one of which I didn't launch until after

I left TF wire and they kind of went defunct

down to one show which was all things transformers,

but I had two different movie shows That I created

for TF wire originally and I put together two

different pilots for them And they kind of stuck

on the back of my head. And one of them was movie

we can review. Because I was trying to hit that

wire. The F wire. So that's why that came along.

The other one was weekend at the movies. And

more or less what they were going to be is movie

we can review is going to be a weekly movie review.

Weekend at the movies was going to be what my

weekly is So Fast forward They didn't get created

and then when we launched you CRN June of like

a year or two later I You and I had talked about

it and we launched movie we can review, and we

attempted to do like Amir Weekly, and then that's

where we discovered your dislike of news, more

or less, more or less. You don't seem to function

as well on news, whereas you're better if you're

talking about something that you're more enthusiastic

about. Yeah, pretty much. So that's more or less

what I was getting at one night. Yeah, under

the bus. Oh, yes hurt. Yes. I made sure I ran

you over good So anyways, I Went when that occurred

we ended up starting off with back to the future

and then going from there and then just kind

of talking about our favorite movies, so it's

not that I Would have changed anything I just

I mean at the time to neither one of us had time

Plus, I think we bit off more than we could chew,

because we started eight podcasts at the same

time. And that's in addition to having the two

that we started with before the network. Yeah.

We had about ten podcasts going when the network

launched. Yeah, that was kind of insane and stupid.

But we've learned a lesson, somewhat. Have we?

I'm not sure. I have. Okay, you have. I'm slowly

killing off shows. You're not killing them off.

You're going to kill them off. Yeah, you're retiring

them. Killing off to me sounds like, oh my God,

it's canceled. The show is dead. It's just dead.

It's never coming back. Yeah, I've done that

with a couple of shows, but more or less. But

yeah, I mean, so I mean, more weekly or not more

weekly movie we can review. Sorry. I'm not used

to being on the show. It's been a completely

different ride. I've enjoyed it for the most

part. I will admit there are shaky points throughout

the series that you and I, either one of us sound

completely disinterested or we're completely

reading something verbatim. And you can tell...

But at the same time if it's something we got

enthusiastic about we Quickly jumped away from

that or we would quickly footnote and bring up

something from that But then we would immediately

jump away from it, which I think Tended to happen

depending on what we were talking about Yeah,

so which is why now whenever we talk about a

movie It's one we actually give a rat's ass about

whereas back then we sit to this very strict

schedule and didn't have any deviation See that's

the thing like I didn't mean for the show to

be have a super strict recording releasing schedule

You know everybody everybody that knows me Knows

that I'm a numbers guy when it comes to podcasts

And I do crazy certain things with certain numbers

like every episode 66 is something to do with

Star Wars It's it's definitely clerks definitely

definitely definitely yeah The crazy thing is,

I don't think... I don't think episode 66 of

MWIRE was Star Wars related, because we did that

in episode 75. That one per two. Yes. I remember

this stuff. We made fucking no ass. Hey, now.

It was either that or record for five hours.

Come on, now. No, I know. I was getting at the

fact that we... teased and made fun of your ass.

Yeah. Literally. Yes. Episode 66 of M .Y .E .R.

Oh my god. It was Big Daddy. Okay so my thing

with M .Y .E .R. at the time when we were talking

it out and everything else was I was into this

whole thing of Podcast I listen to basically

tear stuff apart You know they point out some

good things they like but they essentially trash

all over the movies that they that they review

I didn't really want to do that, but I kind of

was doing that I was nitpicking way more than

you were doing almost like a Cisco and Ebert

meets mystery science theater 3000 Kinda and

being complete ass about it I'm not not innocent

either No, not at all. You know, I've tried in

the five -year span that MWIRE has had to only

review stuff that I care about. You know, stuff

like... Daredevil stuff like the X -Men Iron

Man The Batman films Walking Tall double. Oh

my god. I completely forgot. I already did double.

Oh kid. Wow The firm Empire Records Paparazzi

Billy man. Well, Billy Madison was you that you're

the Adam Sandler buff out of the two of us You

know the Tron films, I so cannot wait for the

next Tron movie. I've tried and I'm really kind

of going back now and looking at films that I

haven't seen. That's kind of the whole point

of my end of the show is films that I haven't

seen in a long ass time are films that I love

to talk about. And after rewatching a lot of

them, I'm gonna be adding them to the schedule

as we go along. As far as the schedule, I by

no means expected this podcast to go the length

of how far out I plan the schedule. And things

have moved around, things have shifted, we've

gotten to things that I had, you know, in year

two planned out for year nine. Like the Bond

spotlight that movie revolved the hand and I

did. Wasn't supposed to happen until at least

2018 The Superman spotlight wasn't supposed to

happen until like 2017 at the time So, you know,

I've moved things around and everything else

and now that we are over 100 episodes We're five

years into the show I got to thank Kevin and

his crew. First of all, I got to thank Kevin,

movie role Dan and Michael Powers, Booth Nintendo,

Booth Ninja 81 from Off the Cuff, because those

three guys, Dan and Kevin more specifically,

I don't know how much Mike added to the weekly

thing, getting that off the ground. No offense,

Mike. But Dan and Kevin really kind of brought

people back to this show and I thank them so

much for that From here on out. My goal is with

the regular episodes is to just have fun And

talk about movies that I love pretty much when

I think that's something that we kind of lost

Along the way. I think we it became more of a

chore instead of just doing it because we wanted

to do it And I think that that's why a lot of

it's tended to suffer and later on I think that

that's why we started coming back to the the

fun aspect We're like, oh, this is great blah

blah blah, and then we're like, oh This sucks.

We're not doing that. We're going to another

movie I'm not disagreeing with you, I'm just

laughing at your description of how it happened

is all. Okay folks, here's what I will tell you.

It's kind of a little preview for the regular

MYR episodes coming up. What I have decided is

we are not doing any movies that are in the current

year. So anything 2013 and past, it's fair game.

Next year... Obviously anything 2014 and past

is fair game As I already said The thin man the

next two parts of the thin man will be coming

up After that we've yet looks like the Thomas

Crown affair I do want to do this special episode

talking about The MMPA documentary I forget what

it's called. Movie rule, Dan's probably screaming

at his iDevice or whatever he listens to this

on. Oh god, what is this stupid documentary called?

It's the MMPA rated over or under, underrated

or something like that. SWAT, Dread, the 2012

Dread. Beetlejuice is gonna be the Halloween

episode this year. Paycheck. Potentially Father

of the Bride films, I don't know yet. Throw Mama

from the Train, Fled, Ricochet, and then for

Christmas we're going to be doing the Expendables

franchise because everybody loves a good action

movie at Christmas, right? I'd rather die hard.

We already did that five years ago. I know. I

was just saying I'd rather die hard than... Apparently

nobody wants to talk about that fifth movie.

There was a fifth movie Yeah, exactly see Alright,

so there you go folks. M wire is five years old.

Thank you to all the listeners who have been

with us from the beginning Thank you to all the

new listeners Please go leave us iTunes reviews

We will be back after the trailer for frequency

and this will be a spoiler filled review because

this movie came out 14 years ago, so if you haven't

seen it by now, you're screwed We'll be back

after this Once in a decade massive solar storms

invade our atmosphere Disrupting global communications

Frank, Frank Sullivan. Is this some kind of joke?

That will allow John Sullivan to talk to his

father. What do you say we tame this bronco,

huh? You and me, spirit and guts. Who's been

dead for 30 years. How could it be? I don't know.

But we gotta be talking off the mother -son spot

of all time. I've missed you so much. Well, tell

me about yourself. Tell me about your life. I'm

a cop. What? You're a third -generation firefighter.

Come on, I thought you were gonna grow out of

that cop phase. What's going on, Satch? Frank

says that he's talking to Johnny on the radio

in the future. Now, hey, little chief. There's

somebody I want you to talk to. Good night, John.

Good night, there, Chief. Oh, my God. Hello!

Something's wrong. Something we did changed the

past. Something happened to mom. Your mother

what? No. She was murdered. We gotta do something.

Try to stop this guy. I may not know who he is,

but I know where he's gonna be and what he's

gonna do before he gets there. Do I call the

police? They're not gonna believe me. You got

his prints. I want you to hide that wallet. Somewhere

where nobody's gonna find it for the next 30

years. The window seat in the dining room. It's

in! All right, here we go folks frequency now

I will read this one sentence from Wikipedia

so no one whoo Frequency is a 2000 American science

fiction thriller film. It was co -produced and

directed by Gregory Hoblet and written and co

-produced by Toby Emmerich. The film stars Dennis

Quaid and Jim Caviezel as father and son Frank

and John Sullivan respectively. It was filmed

in Toronto and New York City. The film garnered

mostly favorable reviews following its release

via DVD format in October of 2000. See, this

is one of those films that I remember being excited

for this film after I saw the trailer. And I

will never stop bringing this up on this podcast.

Trailers are advertisements to get you excited

or to make you not care about a movie. It's like

watching Transformers the movie. It's actually

to sell toys. So I I was just I was just one

of those guys that I was like, you know This

came out when I was 20. I love Dennis Quaid I

don't think I had seen Caviezel in a lot of things

before this I don't think I've seen him in a

lot of things since this I'm not saying he hasn't

done stuff. I'm just saying I haven't seen him.

I know he's in the current CBS person of interest.

I know he's in that. I have not watched that

past the pilot. He was in Passion of the Christ.

Yeah, he was Jesus. He was Jesus. Oh my god,

I forgot he was in Pay It Forward. Holy crap.

Oh yeah, he was the creepy guy. He was in High

Crimes. He was in... He was in Deja Vu in 2006.

Wow, we might have to add that to the schedule.

I love that movie. Anyway. So yeah, Jim Caviezel,

Dennis Quaid. I have loved Dennis Quaid for the

longest time. He's an excellent actor. I think

this was the first film I saw Caviezel in. And

I've seen Quaid in, I think the first film I

saw him in was The Rookie. And then seeing him

in this, I think that's actually why I opted

to watch this when I run it. When I watched it

the first time was because he was in it because

I'm. I'll get this out there right away. I'm

very, very picky about my films. Mary, she is

not. She will watch pretty much whatever. And

I, because I'm so picky, I'm like, I'm not watching

that. That's that's a B flick. I'm like, that's

a C flick. That's, you know, and she's like,

why? What do you mean? And I says, I says, do

you see one name actor in there? No. Well, not

all of them start out big. And I'm like, I understand

that. But they're not big. I said, so it's going

to be crap. And then I look at the video quality

and I'm like, it's crap. And I it's it's one

of those things that automatically turns me off

to it. So, I mean, this because it had coined

in it was automatically a watch. Mm hmm. Geez,

I almost sounded as bad as you with your trailers.

Yeah, see, there you go. So, frequency is based

around this father and son. It is... I don't

want to say it's a time travel movie because

it really... It really isn't a time travel...

It's a time travel conversation movie. Yeah,

it's a time travel displacement kind of thing.

I don't know. That's actually a more accurate

statement, is it's a displacement than anything

else. Yeah. I think you hit the nail on the head

there. Yeah, so we start out with John Sullivan.

Little Chief. And Little Chief has grown up to

be a cop. And, you know, he's got... I'm trying

to think... God, I just saw this. He doesn't...

He's single, right? Yeah, because he's got Gordo.

Yeah, yeah. He's a cop, his buddy Gordo is married

with kids, and Gordo's kids are basically pestering

the heck out of him. Gordo finds this old ham

radio, which somehow, through some miracle of

dropping it, gets it to work again, but it works

through time. And John, after they leave, is

now... Trying to get this radio to work and he

gets it to work and he reaches out to Frank Sullivan

They have the same call letters the same everything

and and We find out that Frank is his father

and they go through this series of events Basically,

it's around the nightingale murders And then

and that's an interesting thing that they would

base a movie around that It actually made a lot

of sense because it was you know by him being

in the future knowing the future he was able

to change the past The seeds of the future are

buried in the past, but yeah So you know John

is really skeptical Frank is Frank is livid Frank

is like alright, buddy Who are you you know that

you know that kind of thing he's really really

uppity and these are This is a set of family

and friends that are die -hard Mets fans And

everything kind of revolves around that and,

you know, John tries to prove to Frank that,

hey, you know, that happened, you know, that

happened nearly 30 years ago. I'm watching it

on TV right now. And I think Frank during the

movie at one point says the line, oh, man, we

must be on the mother of all sunspots. So they

blame this thing on the sunspots that were going

on back in the 60s. The movie is just so good.

I love the plot. I love how Basically John saves

his father From dying because before John activated

the radio His dad died in a fire Because he's

a fireman Once Frank comes around to realizing

hey, this is son. He's like hey, did you become

a fire? No, I went the other way. I'm a cop now

It's just I love everything about it the acting

is so well done you got Andre Brower in this

I've always loved him. I think the only thing

I have never liked Andre Brower in when it was

when he voiced dark side in Batman versus Superman

versus Batman or one of them DCAU films So we

get to the nightingale part of the thing and

and Frank and John are trying to figure this

out and basically Frank can put stuff in hidden

places in the house because they are both in

the same house that John grew up in they're in

the family home So Frank, you know puts I think

the killer's wallet into the little bakery bench

in the dining room. It flashes forward to time

to where John can get prints on it. Turns out

that the Nightingale Killer is a cop, but all

of these events that they're doing, and I'm just

doing this out of the top of my head, ladies

and gentlemen, all these events and, you know,

Frank stopping him back in the 60s leads up to

the killer noticing John's mother which leads

to her supposed death so that's not good they

got to fix it I love the constant times the time

displacement that when they get to the scene

where she's where they're like we did something

something's not right when we get to the scene

where what is the killer's name I'm trying to

think off top of my head Jack Shepard when we

get to the scene where Shepard is in their home

and coming after Frank's wife and coming after

little chief the time displacement between the

two timelines is amazingly well shot Don't think

I've ever seen effects like that as far as Okay,

sure you know I would say this is a regular movie

like we've seen effects like this and like you

know back to the future and you know Star Trek

and Star Wars and all that kind of stuff, but

like as far as a regular movie based on Working

with time and space Like the living room constantly

changes at one point It's just absolutely love

it What do you like about the movie? Well, I

like the fact that a lot of the the conversation

that goes on between father and son because the

son Barely got to see his father And didn't grow

up with him So it's it's one of those things

that he's trying to reach out connect with him

and and then he has this this need to Because

he found this loophole in it And he's dealing

with dealing with these murders in the future

he's able to not only help other people in the

past by trying to course correct things with

this more or less douchebag and also trying to

save his father. It's kind of nice to see that

kind of dynamic because I don't really think

I've seen much like that to this point. I know

that, you know, The ham radio is kind of a weird

catalyst for this, but it kind of makes sense,

too, because it's old fashioned technology, so

there's a lot of uncertainty to certain things

with it. But I also love the fact that when you

think that everything is coming down to the end

and you see Jack getting ready to put a bullet

in the sun and The father comes in and just blows

him away And he's old oh Yeah, I just I love

that like just because you know it's it's the

the father finally being able to help his son

mm -hmm and It's I don't know it's one of those

films that I I find that I'm intrigued by the

by the ham radio thing Aspect of it because I

think it's I think what wasn't it the like the

aurora borealis or something I think that was

maybe what it was it was causing this whole thing

to happen Yeah, and I I just I love the the the

aspect of how they're having to communicate back

and forth and help each other And in the father's

like Bullshit you're you're you're not telling

the truth and he's like watch this, you know

watch this baseball game and I'll tell you everything

that happens and And then he's like Wow Yeah

It's just I mean so many of the things that happen

in this film are just It keeps you on your toes,

but it also keeps it light at points it's It

may get heavy at points, but there's there's

some levity when you're talking between the father

and the son There's levity there. There's also

levity in the father trying to be a cop Like

he has no idea what the hell he's doing He has

no idea what the hell he's doing plus the relationship

between Jules and Frank between the husband and

the wife are you know Johnny's parents. It's

Refreshing it's you know your wholesome New York

family You know hard -working people that are

trying to just you know get by and Provide for

their son and and these aren't people that you

know are always down on their luck or having

a hard time I mean these are people that are

surrounded by friends and family and and everything

else I mean they have that baseball game at the

end You know How they handled the nightingale

killer was interesting I thought that was really

cool. I thought it was a mighty convenient McGuffin

that it happened to be a cop. Well, yeah. But

it does make sense because back then, I mean,

there really was no way for them to kind of trace

that information. So the fact that the father

is bringing this stuff to the son through the

house to identify it in the future when they

have the technology. Then being able to tell

the father to hey look go back and do this Absolutely

And it's it's really interesting because John

really breaks the rule of time travel. You're

not supposed to change, okay. Okay, let's face

it. They break the rules of time travel or time

displacement all over the place. I mean, they

change the entire future, but what I find funny

is, you know, that old adage from Doc Brown,

no, Marty, you can't do anything in the future

because it could change the course of history.

Well, Big John talks to little Gordo. And he

tells little Gordo to remember the name Yahoo

and at the end of the film Gordo has a Yahoo

one or one I Yahoo or whatever else because apparently

he bought a whole bunch of stock in Yahoo I Know

I thought that it was kind of an interesting

thing and in funny enough. That's back when Yahoo

is relevant Yeah with Google around who needs

Yahoo? Yeah But yeah, I mean, you know the whole

thing with Again the time travel there the time

displacement thing like when they're when they're

fighting in the past and the Shepherd gets his

hand shot off how it affects the feel like it

was such a cool effect It was cool, but it was

creepy as all hell. It wasn't as... Well, he

got, like, freakin' T -Rex arms. Yeah, pretty

much. And then he's just staring at his hand,

and it's shriveling up, and he's like, what the

hell? And then the effects of the radio. Because

during that scene, you hear what's going on in

the current timeline. Versus what's going on

in the past timeline through the radio, so it's

echoing over time That was an amazing effect

Absolutely love that You know the cast in this

we talked about Dennis Quaid we talked about

Jim Caviezel like I said the funny thing is is

Dennis Quaid wasn't even originally the the lead

actor for this oh He wasn't no it was supposed

to be Stallone Oh no, that wouldn't have worked.

And when I was writing up on that, I'm like,

no, no, no, no, no, no. You can do that. But

yeah, apparently it was supposed to be Stallone

originally that was going to be playing the character

and he fell out because it was a dispute over

the money. Yeah. And then... Then they had a

couple director issues and they had a couple

other actor issues and they said that the director

of the film realized they needed an experienced

actor to portray the character and that's how

Dennis Quaid got chose. And Roger Ebert called

the plot contrived and gave the film a favorable

review which means Head up ass thumb up ass Yeah,

something like that sucking Cisco's ass What

is so interesting to me about this film is something

I didn't know and I I'm gonna have to actually

go back and watch it now and find out Where this

character actually? Pops up, but the character

of Graham Gibson is played by Jordan Bridges.

I know Jordan Bridges from Name sounds familiar.

Oh, hold on. I'll I'll get to it. Hold on. He

is Frankie Rizzoli jr. In Rizzoli and Isles currently

he was also He was in in a couple he was in one

episode of law and order criminal intent but

Jordan bridges is the son of Bo bridges he is

of that bridges. Oh, I thought you're gonna say

Jeff bridges He's the son of Bo, brother of Jeff.

So Jeff is his uncle. The dude is Jordan Bridges'

uncle. Okay, so you have Elizabeth Mitchell as

Julia Jules Sullivan. You have Sean Doyle as

Jack Shepard. Noah Emrick is in. This is Gordon

Gordo Hirsch. I love Noah Emmerich. He's been

in a lot of stuff, and he's a really, really

good actor. You have Peter McNeil as Butch Foster,

Michael Cera as Gordon Hirsch Jr. You have Brian

Green as himself. That's interesting. The cast

is very well -rounded. but really where the acting

lies, no disrespect to any of the other actors,

but really the acting lies in the top three build

in Quaid, Caviezel, and Brower. I mean, Brower

is such a good actor and he pulls himself into

roles that you wouldn't really expect him to

do and it's so great. frequency is a movie that

I can't watch all the time but when I did have

it on my DVR I did watch it several times you

know since I DVR it before we did this episode

it has a amazing beginning middle and end it

has a full story narrative The practical effects,

I mean, the practical and special effects are

all great. Like I was saying earlier with that

end scene and how everything's playing over the

radio between both timelines. I feel that that

just makes you kind of jump a little bit just

because you get antsy because you can't see the

action, but you're having to hear it. Well, yeah,

and it's in a sense it's almost kind of like

that old -time radio effect You know that that

like our parents and our you know grandparents

and everybody kind of grew up with this listening

to that and it's I don't know it's it's kind

of I Totally get why It was you know, the the

whole radio thing can be kind of relevant and

kind of get you antsy about it absolutely absolutely

and it could have only been none of that radio

if you tried to do this nowadays it just here

I'm gonna call my dad in the past on Skype yeah

that's just Microsoft glitches it and it combines

with Google and Apple and we have the aurora

micro realis and we have a scaffold that's what

we have We have a micro scalpel there you go

Frequency though absolutely amazing movie No

one else but these actors Could have done this

movie it sucks that was that it was in a bit

of developmental hell But I think it was well

worth the wait Honestly, I'm kind of glad that

This is one of those movies that you'll never

see a sequel of oh Yes, I would punch somebody

in the face if they tried to do this This is

such a good movie that and honestly, I wish that

a lot of Hollywood would kind of do more one

-shots like this and I'm not You know, I mean

don't get me wrong. I love my franchises and

I love all that stuff, but I There aren't enough

good movies that are standalone like this. I

mean, there are some that have come out in the

last year or two that some people like. I just

don't. But again, it has to do with the plot,

too. And for me, the whole aspect of kind of

time travel -y -ness with this kind of draws

me to it. Absolutely. Absolutely. This movie

had a budget of 22 million. and it made just

north of 68 million so and you know as we said

earlier it does have favorable reviews I'm glad

that you know and I know people are gonna expect

me to nitpick the time travel thing honestly

it's one of those things that makes sense to

me like there is normally stuff like what they

did in this movie with the time travel would

drive me nuts because you need to explain it

more but I love that there's hardly any exposition

in this movie what exposition what exposition

there is in this movie it's done through baseball

so overall for me I'm gonna give frequency five

stars out of five great acting great setting

great effects music was wonderful I was really

surprised that there's a Garth Brooks song in

this movie. Yeah. He got cancelled. Yeah, you're

not a fan. I know. See, that was the thing though.

Back then, 2000, I was still kind of on my Garth

kick. Nobody wants him now. That's why they keep

kicking him out of countries. he is releasing

a a new album and new tour and all that stuff

again that nobody wants i don't know i'm interested

to see you know after x number of quote -unquote

retirement years what he kind of puts out uh...

it's gonna sound like they're better better okay

uh... no or is it uh... what would you rate frequency

i would read a five out of five just because

i i enjoyed the plot enjoyed the the mechanisms

that they used for the film. I enjoyed the effects

and just the whole premise of the film was really

well done and really well thought out. It was

more so because it was an original concept that

I really found myself liking it more. Or at least

seemed to be an original concept. I mean, you

know, the whole time displacement thing, that's

been used to death before, but... The way they

handled it, though, was different. Yeah, the

way they handled it was very different, very

unique, and very interesting, so... We are gonna

take one final break, and we'll come back with

closing thoughts and whatever else after this.

What is Hunnic Outcast Podcast, you may ask?

Well, it's a graphic gimmick of pop culture and

non -pop culture events. One week I could be

just ranting and raving. You never can tell.

you go, folks. The mother of all sunspots gave

us a review of frequency here, this time around

on M .Y .R. Movie Weekend Review. Yeah, but the

direction for the regular episodes is basically

I'm gonna find movies that I absolutely love

that I can gush about. I'm not sure how often

you're gonna be here. It depends on what the

topic is, whether I show my face or not, or voice.

voice not face this is audio not video well it

could be it could be holocaust you don't know

it could be which which means that I'd appear

in places where you don't want me to I could

appear right behind you and be recording a podcast

which would be a holocaust you'd have a hollow

emitter and I would show up and talk yeah this

is not Star Wars Star Trek and Star Wars Well,

they used hollow emitters in Star Wars. Yeah,

they stole it from Star Trek. They had the EMAH,

the Emergency Medical Hologram. Alright, so,

as I said, the next two episodes of MYR Regular

are going to be the Thin Man reviews. It's another

Thin Man and Shadow the Thin Man in episode 108.

The thin man goes home and song of the thin man

in 109 After that, I'm not exactly sure What

I mean, I know I said at the beginning of the

show episode 110 is gonna be Thomas Crown Affair

the 1999 Pierce Brosnan version not the old version

And then you know going down the line we'll we'll

see probably gonna be bringing in some new blood

some different hosts uh... and we'll just see

where it goes from here so i'd guess uh... we'll

give out the uh... where people can find you

online sir yes i will do that i am on twitter

at scp twenty one has a mind you know also follow

at the cast radio or at gc r and m wire which

we barely ever use anymore but that's all right

uh... Until next time, keep those film reels

rollin'. been tossed about lost and broken wandering

aimlessly and God somehow you know that shit
