And now the latest and greatest in movies with

MWire. Hello and welcome to MWIRE. This is Movie

Week in Review. This is episode 104 and it is

a marvelous episode at that. I am your host TFG

and Mike. Joining me is Steve Megatron. Hello.

Welcome back. It's been a while. It's been a

while. I'm not singing. Oh, dude. I triple dog

dare you to sing as Megatron. It's been a while.

I don't want to see. Alright, this is episode

104 of the regular MWires. This is a spoiler

-filled episode. There will be a spoiler. uh...

announcements once we get to uh... to that section

just want to let everybody know as well that

this is going to be spoiler -filled as we go

in -depth on Captain America the Winter Soldier

before we do that what is your overall impression

of the marvel cinematic universe so far uh...

they've had a couple that i haven't really gave

a rat's ass to Overall, I'd say that they haven't

done really that bad. I mean, they're all interconnecting.

They're all very well written. Some of them,

you can tell, are a little bit fast -track. But

for the most part, I really don't have any gripes

with it. I think that they've been doing fairly

well. I look forward to more of what they're

going to do in the future. Yeah, I I'm the same

way I There have been a number of them that I've

absolutely loved whether they're the Marvel Studios

films or Other like Sony and and Fox and whatever

else but specifically to the Marvel Studios films

You know Iron you know Iron Man Incredible Hulk

Iron Man 2 Thor First Avenger, Captain America,

The Avengers, Iron Man 3, all that stuff. I've

liked most of them. Thor and... The Thor movies

are not my thing at all. I just... I just can't

get into those characters. I know everyone craps

on Iron Man 2. It's... It's not the best movie,

but it's by no means the worst. I know you've

said in the past it does set up Avengers, which

that is true, it does do that, but for me with

Iron Man 2, the reason why I enjoy it so much

is because part of it is the Armor Wars story,

where Tony has to basically... go get his designs

back, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. And in

the whole of the Iron Man trilogy so far, I think

they've done a damn good job telling a really

cohesive story with that character. Avengers

was absolutely awesome. The first Captain America,

I didn't see until it hit media release. I didn't

see until it hit DVD, your Netflix, Redbox, whatever.

Um, not that I didn't want to see it, not that

I was one of those guys that was like, Oh crap,

what's Chris Evans not doing playing Johnny Storm,

et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. Which again,

I like Chris Evans as Johnny Storm. I think that

was, I think it's interesting if you look at

his portrayal as Johnny Storm and his portrayal

as Steve Rogers and how well he acts between

the two of them and the differences between the,

obviously the two characters are very different,

but It's surprising to me that the same guy can

have such versatility in his acting. And I know

that's the whole point of actors is to be as

versatile as you can, but just some people, you

know, some people can't get out of a certain

role sometimes. The first Avenger I thought was

done really well, very well acted, I... Every

time I saw the trailers for it, I was like, hey,

it's Two -Face. What's he doing in this movie?

I was like, hey, Tommy Lee Jones. What's Agent

K doing in a Captain America movie? I thought

the plot and the pacing in First Avenger was

great. And I was really excited to see what they

were going to do with him next after Avengers.

And that's where we get into The Winter Soldier.

So I think we are going to take a quick break.

You're going to hear the spoiler warning and

then you're going to hear the Captain America

trailer. We'll be back in a moment. Most of the

intelligence community doesn't believe he exists.

The ones that do call him the Winter Soldier.

He's a ghost. You'll never find them. I joined

SHIELD to protect people. Captain, to build a

better world sometimes means tearing the old

one down. And that makes enemies. One step. People

are gonna die. I can't let that happen. Captain

America needs my help. When do we start? We just

did. The price of freedom is high. And it's a

price I'm willing to pay. He told me not to trust

anyone. This is how it ends. Everything goes.

Warning! The following recording contains many

plot spoilers. If you have not seen the movie

being discussed, please go see the movie before

listening. If not, you have been warned. And

now, on with the show! Alright, we are back.

What were your first impressions? I kind of glossed

over this with you. What were your first impressions?

When you first saw the first film, what did you

think of it? The first film, I was kind of giving

it a being that this was pretty much my my first

foray into Captain America besides the Spider

-Man and Amazing Spider -Man cartoon from the

90s So I really didn't have all that much knowledge

about him But I knew that he was highly important

in the Marvel Cinematic Universe As well as the

you know, just a regular Marvel anyway But I

didn't realize how much of Captain America 1

was going to come into play in the setting up

basically the entire universe. They make you

think that Tony Stark and Iron Man is the beginning

of it. He's the first public announcement of

it after Iron Man or after Captain America, but

it definitely set up a lot of Captain America

2 from Captain America and they directly pull

a lot of elements from that film. referencing

it and It further helped explains the the pieces

that were kind of left in the past of that film

and the beginning of Avengers making it more

Coherent of a story for Captain America 2 All

right Winter Soldier takes place two years after

the Battle of New York So, there's that time

frame there. Myself, I'm kinda like right there

with you. Outside of the Spidey animated series

cartoon where he was in the Six Forgotten Warriors

arc, I knew of Captain America, but I never really

had any exposure to him. Last month in March,

when we did Marvelous March, reading Mark Wade's

Man Out of Time was the first time I ever really

read a Cap comic. I enjoyed it. I thought it

was really interesting. And I've kind of heard

rumblings about the whole Winter Soldier thing

and how Bucky didn't die and he comes back as

the Winter Soldier and etc. etc. etc. I'm just

really happy to see some of these characters

that Marvel is doing things with that they're

becoming more mainstream. I am, I will say this

forever and ever, I am one of those mainstream

franchise kind of fans. And before these two

films, the only thing... Outside of spidey that

I knew cap was cap was from was the Superhero

squad show where he was like, you know full -on

satire of himself But winter soldier I went and

saw it and I was like, oh my god so great it

Everything about this movie is really really

cool the story and this is why I like the Marvel

Cinematic Universe again continuity everyone

knows everyone should know by now we've done

a hundred and something episodes of MWIRE that

I'm a huge continuity kind of guy and just where

everyone is and where everyone is in Cap's world

and how they bring in everyone absolutely loved

it I did think, and I did mention this on Facebook

after I get out of the movie, when I got home,

I was like, yeah, I liked it, but why does the

Winter Soldier look like Cobra Commander from

G .I. Joe Rise of Cobra? I didn't get that vibe

quite as much. Just a little, not wholly. There

are just a couple of moments when he has the

black part of his mask on that just in the eyes

and stuff and how the mask looks sometimes. That

early part of Cobra Commander in the first G

.I. Joe film, not the later part. It's not even

a nitpick. It was just something I noticed. For

me, I really... liked the setup of it right from

the get -go they had they had Black Widow and

Captain America running a covert mission and

Cap didn't quite like what was going on and Black

Widow had her own problems to deal with and then

when they met with Fury there was all kinds of

arguments and then I I enjoyed the fact that

Cap was kind of like, you know, I'm really getting

tired of being left in the dark. You want me

to help you? You need to tell me what you want.

You know, just stop, you know, lying, basically.

Yeah, and that's been Cap's mantra to fury since

Avengers. Yeah, especially when he found the

ammunition. Phase two. Yeah, the phase two stuff.

Yeah. So it further, you know, leads to wonder

what is going on. And then You get back to fury,

you know, he's explaining everything and then

Him realizing he doesn't have access to the files

even though it's him that has access to the files

Yeah, and then he starts noticing something goofy

and then you know, of course he gets hunted down

and They make it out like he's dead Which you

know that's that's again and like a Colson type

thing or you know just pretty much what they've

done with everybody in the Marvel universe Okay,

let me at lonely dress this really quick, but

they faked it properly Exactly I'm not saying

that they pulled the Colson because they completely

killed Colson he was dead for 11 days, but But

Fury, they gave him something that he would appear

as close to dead as possible. And you have Maria

Hill helping out, still loyal and everything,

and these two still loyal. And then the fact

that Alexander Pierce was basically the Hail

Hydra. And you get to see the guy that was in

the Senate. from Iron Man 2. And he's like, hail

Hydra. I always didn't like that guy. I didn't

either, but it was funnier seeing him as a Hydra

and I'm like, okay, it makes sense why he's a

douchebag. And then you see Black Widow and Captain

America trying to infiltrate the first S .H .I

.E .L .D. location. Only to find out that it's

a Hydra location. With one of the original Hydra

members of the army that the Red Skull had in

Captain America 1. Arnim Zola. Yep, and... You

find out that he... Which, this leads me to believe

that he is the Clairvoyant. If you think about

it, I mean... Spoilers for anybody that hasn't

seen Agents of Shield but They make it out to

believe that Bill Paxton's character is the clairvoyant

And he basically admits as much but I just somehow

can't see that I But he said he switched sides

So that leads me to also believe that he's not

but they're they're making it out like he is

that show whereas I think Zola here is The the

clairvoyant since he actually has access to everything

Yeah, and they've infiltrated, you know shield

from the inside out Right from the get -go which

you know, of course then they lead to follow

that, you know Stark's father was killed off

by Hydra They targeted Bruce Banner uh... tony

stark and uh... steven strange doctor strange

yes they have yet to bring the film but they

dropped it uh... all they will now that they

dropped it they most of all they were talking

about doing it anyway but they've now they've

definitely name dropped it and he'll be coming

out around the time that ant -man and all that

stuff come out but uh... uh... especially with

all the original uh... heroes of the avengers

winding down uh... And then you have that brought

up, which one, Bruce Banner, even if they tried

to kill him, they can't. The other guy will just

spit it out. Yeah, that's my point. He's pretty

much an unkillable force. He'd have to die of

old age. But the whole film, the way that it

played out, it touched on the rest of the Marvel

Cinematic Universe. almost to the degree, if

not better, than how Avengers did it. And I enjoyed

it thoroughly. I enjoyed it more than I enjoyed

pretty much the rest of the Marvel films to this

point. I mean, I'm not saying that I dislike

any of them, because I don't, other than the

Thor films, but the rest of this Marvel cinematic

universe, I think Cap 2 is... The the greatest

one out of the bunch at this point because it

not only touches on the corruption of the world

and the corruption of You know this this organization

that they thought was just a little bit out there,

but not You know as corrupted as they thought

You know which was corrupted from the get -go

I just I love that and then the fact that agents

of shield the episode that aired the week of

The film's release. Yeah, well it came out April

8th The episode of shield and it directly it

plays into halfway point of cap to until the

end of cap to Because they even reference Melinda

May calling fury on Her secure line, which is

who she's been communicating to this entire time

Is what you find out She's been she's had a direct

patch to fury And you find out that she's actually

the one that was and I know this is not capped

to but it's still kind of capped to this particular

episode That she's the one that assembled Colson's

group and everything on orders from fury and

That's that's why everything's kind of played

out and you find out that even one of the the

group of that is a Hydra agent Yeah, it's probably

Skye. No, because Colson packed her in ahead

of time. It's someone else. Alright. And you'll

get the gist of that. But anyways, so that comes

into play and then you see at the end of the

episode of Agents of S .H .I .E .L .D. Colson's

looking at a monitor watching the events of the

end of Captain America 2. of the three helicarriers

crashing into each other. And there's reports

of Captain America taking down all of it. And

his status is currently unknown, which is probably

the point that they started colliding and the

Winter Soldier threw him off the helicarriers.

Right, right. And I just, I love the humanity

of Captain America in this whole film. Despite

everything going on, he still helped Nick Fury.

He still, and Fury confided in him when he knew

he couldn't trust anybody else because Captain

America is so squeaky clean compared to everyone

else. He is the Marvel Universe Boy Scout. He

is. And I think he's more squeaky clean than...

Superman Superman just because he he has He's

full -bread human, but he's also been at the

very bottom and had to work his way up which

I think makes him the most genuine character

in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and I I think

that his character especially the fact that he

tried to bring Bucky back mm -hmm from being

the Winter Soldier and It just it showed his

humanity that he just he couldn't he couldn't

bear to fight him Yeah, absolutely Let me address

the death thing now. There is a difference in

Setting up a plot of a film To have them one

of the main core shield agents be the reason

you you you have your team unite You know, there's

a difference between that and fury saying full

shadow operations or whatever whatever he said

to hill before he got cut off because all the

all the dc police or what is supposed to be the

dc police basically rear end and front end him

when he said deep shadow operations i knew shenanigans

were going to happen i knew fury wasn't going

to die there's a difference in doing that properly

versus making us think that colson is dead to

bring the team together then oh hey let's let's

give him a tv series you know and i'm not gonna

sit here and bitch about that all the time anymore

i'm done with it i'm just saying that in the

context of of winter soldier like you said there's

a better way to to fake a death you know um uh

i think someone commented on the uh on the on

the mwire weekly post when uh kevin uh fridley

sent and his other his other roommate i think

matt is his name uh or friend uh someone commented

and was like um yes please just don't marvel

just don't do this this this and clones no clones

and all as i said was uh life model decoys for

everyone But cap to I agree with pretty much

everything you're saying it was a very heartfelt

movie It was very very interesting and it's not

only heartfelt but heart -wrenching I assume

I'm not looking at anything I assume The character

that Emily Van Camp plays. I assume she's some

sort of great granddaughter or granddaughter

of Cap's old love interest. Agent 13. The redhead

or the blonde or whatever she is. So let me see

here. What is her character? Sharon Carter. I

assume that she's the some sort of relation to

the other love interest that Cap had back in

the World War II days. Peggy Carter. Peggy Carter,

yeah. Yeah, who he saw in the hospital in this

film. Oh, God. That's what I'm saying. This film

at times was so heart wrenching between him wanting

to basically save Bucky and then him... Basically

showing up and seeing and seeing Peggy again

It's just so so and the one thing we haven't

talked about yet is what do you think of their

Them putting the Falcon into this I like the

character a lot Yeah, I liked his I liked his

tone and I liked the fact that he was like extremely

loyal to Captain America Yeah, Anthony Mackie

did an amazing job as Sam Wilson the Falcon and

I like how they practically Were able to do the

Falcon without making it super cheesy like it's

a mechanical wingsuit versus Dressing him up

like a vulture or something from spider -man,

you know I really do like that. I thought that

was great. I thought his attitude was great I

love that the action scenes in this movie were

so well done. I honestly was not expecting Cap

to jump out the window. I really wasn't. Robert

Redford as Pierce did a really good job. I find

it weird seeing him in movies nowadays. I don't

know why. Probably because he was wearing a really

nice toupee in the movie. Okay, yeah, there is

that I mean, I just throw that out there, you

know In black widow Scarlett Johansson is black

widow. She really kind of came into her own here

I mean, we've seen her since Iron Man 2 You know,

I thought she did very well in Avengers and she

did very well here so Who knows, maybe phase

four of Marvel films will be a Black Widow movie

or something or even maybe a phase three film,

I don't know. Where do you want to see these

characters go in the future of the Marvel film

projects? Well, I mean, the Winter Soldier, they

pretty much already resolved that he's coming

to grips with the fact that he's Bucky and that

he's going to He's going to eventually come back

into fold with Captain America It may not be

in Avengers 2 it may be but who knows I I think

that he'll show back up maybe in a part of the

Avengers 2 Because they'll need all the help

they can get But I also think that he may come

back in cap 3 but I I think that they're going

to have Captain America and Avengers 2 And didn't

they say three or two? I think two and three,

aren't they? Avengers 2 and Cap 3. Okay, so they're

probably gonna kill him off, Steve Rogers off

in Cap 3, and then have the Winter Soldier take

over his cap. Possibly. Like the comics. I'm

pretty sure that's how that's gonna go. I think

Black Widow will show up more throughout some

of the films. Don't think her contracts very

long either. I think she has a few more films

She'll probably show up through the rest of the

Avengers and maybe a solo film Which would be

cool, but Nick Fury I think he'll I know he'll

show up in Avengers 2 but it'll be a muted role

for the most part because shield is kind of defunct

At this point at this point, but I think that

being that Maria Hill and fury will be in the

end of Agents of shield the TV show. I think

what's gonna happen is fury is going to reform

shield But with him as the head of it and in

a New York division Get the reference there like

the old yeah animated series where shield was

based out of New York and Fury was the head of

it. So I think that they'll they'll he'll reform

it where he can handle it all Personally and

then build back up the force just there with

him. So I think he may show up again for a little

while longer but I don't know I really don't

know I think that with this film they've kind

of They've set it up so well that it's it's hard

to tell what's direction they can go in but they've

also shattered the entire universe in this one

film. Now, is there anything out of the film

that you didn't like? Honestly, I can't really

find anything I didn't like about it. I think

that they handled everything so well this time

around with the film that I can't really nitpick.

Like the Iron Man films, I've been able to nitpick

in the second and third film. I've been able

to nitpick a couple of small points in Avengers.

And I say small. The Thor films I don't like

at all. I don't say that they're bad films because

they're not. I just I can't get into them. I've

watched them, but I just I don't care for them.

Yeah, it's more so the character than it is the

film. And then and then you get into the Captain

America films. I was not a big Captain America

fan. Until I saw the first movie and then I was

like, okay I'm open to Captain and Then seeing

this film just puts him in a whole new light

that he's pretty much neck -and -neck with Iron

Man and in this series for me Yeah, yeah, I'm

right there with you. I I love the line when

Falcon asks him, is that what you're wearing?

When you go to war you need a uniform and the

next thing you see is The man as the museum guard

he's like I am so getting fired I That's one

of my complete joys out of any of the Marvel

Universe films whether I like them or not Doesn't

matter if it's Marvel Studios or Sony or Fox

It's when Stan Lee shows up it really really

is it is a small cameo But I love it every time

he shows his face because it's like a quick line

one line quip that's thrown in yeah He's always

like a janitor guard or or or a playboy type

guy I mean, it's it's funny when he shows up,

but I think that it worked really well here plus

I like that they went back to the old cap uniform

Yeah, I didn't care for the the beginning of

the film's uniform. I liked it once they went

back to Captain Puerto Rico It's an internet

meme going around right now because apparently

his Torso section and the way the stars position

looks like the flag of Puerto Rico. Oh jeez People

are going it's Captain Puerto Rico So I like

that uniform better anyway, but Overall Winter

Soldier was a great great movie. I cannot wait

to see more from the Marvel Studios stuff I will

say that right now, as of this recording, I'm

more so looking forward straight into Avengers

Age of Ultron. I don't know, somebody's gotta

show me, I don't think there was ever an animated

series, but somebody's gotta show me a reason

why to care about the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Not that I hate them, not that I don't like the

characters, I just... You know this I mean we've

been friends for six years now. I have basically

three modes. I either love it I just don't give

a crap or I don't really Like I don't pay attention

to anything or I can't stand it It's either on

your radar or it's not or it's not exactly and

Guardians is not you know people people ask me

when I talk to them They've asked me have you

seen the Guardians trailer? Nope. I know they're

more or less the interstellar Avengers Okay,

it's it's more or less that it's a bunch of ragtag

guys thrown together. They're not controlled

by anybody really I mean they are but they aren't

I don't know too much about them because I'm

not huge into Marvel III my my real introduction

was when the film started coming out I had some

from the animated series in the 90s, but I'm

interested to see the film. It does look fun

and interesting. I'm just not sure I know that

elements of it do kind of but into Age of Ultron

somehow Okay, and uh somehow into Avengers 3

So I definitely see a crossover coming in the

future with that Yeah, I mean am I gonna see

the movie before Age of Ultron most definitely

I'll check it out on Netflix or Redbox or something

like that, but I just have zero interest right

now whatsoever. Like I said at the beginning

of this podcast, I am one of those basically

the make me famous kind of characters. Iron Man,

Hulk, Cap, Black Widow, you know, that kind of

team. Now people have said, I've seen people

online say oh a hulk solo film would never work

and oh please don't do another punisher movie

i honestly think if ruffalo continued being hulk

as long as they weren't going back and doing

an origin story he could really pull it off if

they were gonna like if marvel has the rights

to do hulk which i think they do since they did

the incredible hulk as part of phase one um if

they do a solo film with hulk maybe do Planet

Hulk or maybe do World War Hulk or You know something

that isn't an origin and I think it would be

fine with Punisher I think you need to get Tom

Jane back as the Punisher But I mean, I'm really

stoked and interested to see where Avengers Age

of Ultron takes us and I'm Like triple crossing

my fingers for an Iron Man 4 You might see a

war machine movie. Okay. Well, it wouldn't be

iron man 4 though right, but Even if you know,

even if iron man 4 does happen and it's the story

of Feng Feng Fung kills Tony Stark and and some

futuristic clone from 2099 or some grand great

-great -great -grandson of Tony Stark comes back

and becomes him and it's a different actor fine,

I just You know, I don't know. For a final rating

for me with cap, I'm gonna give it four and a

half stars, which on our GCR Universal rating

scale is almost perfect. I really did love it.

If I was gonna really nitpick something that

I took a half point off for, it would probably

be that at points I felt like it was a little

too long. The pacing itself was fine, but it

didn't feel like I was in the movie theater for

two hours. It felt like I was in the movie theater

for three hours. What about you for a final rating?

See, I didn't have that problem. I was wanting

more. I was wanting to see what happens more

so after. Yeah, they showed the recovery of Cap

and then they showed, you know, everybody going

to Fury's mock funeral, including Fury himself

and burning his identity and his eye patch, which

may be sad that he burned his eye patch. But,

you know, he's trying to go incognito for a while,

at least until he can, you know, as I am guessing,

try and reform shield. But. But, yeah, so I mean,

and I like that and I like the aspect that you

know, Fury busted a cap in Pierce's ass, more

or less, as they exposed Hydra and S .H .I .E

.L .D. and everything that was. But I would give

it a five out of five. I really, really, really

enjoyed it. It's the most fun I've had with Marvel

films since Avengers and before that, Iron Man.

I know some people are pointing out the nitpick

of, oh, well, if they erased his identity, why

would his damaged eye work to prove his identity?

I thought it was really cool. Well, he said you

forgot about the other eye. Yeah. And they wiped

the one eye from his memory or from the computer,

but they forgot the other one, which, you know,

I mean, on the one hand makes sense and on the

other hand does not. But being that they wouldn't

think that he could use the other eye, being

that it was damaged, it was rather humorous that

he just takes the eye patch off, you get to see

what's underneath it for once, and then he gets

to pull the trigger on it more or less. Yeah,

no, it was awesome. Don't know since fury is

a part of shield and I know mr. Jackson is kind

of getting up there I'm wondering if they would

ever do a fury centric film I wish they would

honestly like at least him maybe forming shield

again or having him, you know kind of Battling

his way back in kind of thing. I mean, I think

that it would pull off really well and I think

that people would enjoy it plus I think You know,

say what you will, but Sam Jackson and people

like him, like Bruce Willis and all of that kind

of thing, they're just, they're action icons.

Yeah, they play drama really well too and all

that kind of stuff, but they're really action

icons. So I mean, to not have him doing some

form of action, like, I mean, granted Avengers,

he wasn't really doing any action, but... To

see him here doing as much as he did it just

made me love the character that much more Absolutely

now the only reason why I bring this up about

doing having him do a Solo film is because the

only time I've ever seen a Nick Fury solo film

was when David Hasselhoff starred as Nick Fury

in Nick Fury agent of shield The only reason

why I even bring this up is because I so want

them to bring back Gary Chalk as dumb dumb Dugan.

You never know. Maybe that'd be his right hand

man when he starts up SHIELD again. But maybe

that's what Agent Coulson's supposed to be. Maybe,

who knows? Anything else you want to bring up

about Cap 2 or the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

No, I think that until we see some more pop up

into this nice franchise, I think that it's pretty

much said, done, and I can't think of a better

film to go in this franchise than what's been

talked about tonight. Awesome, awesome. You can

catch MWIRE weekly every Monday or Tuesday -ish

here on the GCRN. I have no idea what they're

doing next. Coming up next for the regular MWIRE,

we're gonna be swinging on some webs. So keep

those film reels rolling. I have been TF2 and

Mike with Steve Megatron Phillips. We will catch

you next time. You know what it is I love about

being Spider -Man? It's been ten years. What

have you been up to? I do some web design. We're

gonna want to see you as Oscorp. Yet you under

surveillance. Why? Isn't that the question of

the day? Nothing is what I thought it was. I

once told you that secrets have a cost. The truth

does too. My name is Richard Parker. I have discovered

what Oscorp was going to use my research for.

What is all this? The future. We have plans for

you, Peter Parks. movie we can review on geekcastradio
