About this Episode

We explore the personal attachment to specific pop culture characters, focusing on why certain figures resonate with fans regardless of their role or screen time. The conversation dives into the enduring appeal of the Transformers character Jazz, the vocal legacy left by Scatman Carruthers, and the impact of various voice actors including Phil LaMarr and Darius McCrary. We also discuss shifting character preferences through childhood and adulthood, memories of G1 Transformers toys, and opinions on modern adaptations like the 2012 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series. Finally, the talk touches on the role of legacy in media, from the history of Batman voices to the evolution of franchises like Star Wars and Beast Wars.

Hey everybody, Bumblebee here, and you're watching

Optabotamon. Welcome to the Team Bottomless Variety

Hour episode 26. As we teased it last week, we

were gonna have, we're still gonna, I'm still

going to perform an intervention here, but sadly,

Mrs. Gilmer had better things to do with her

time than curb her husband's jazz obsessions,

but I am here with Slimeblower Bob. Hello, sir.

Hello. And this isn't really like, obviously

no one's gonna be able to curb anyone's, you

know, favoritism towards whatever character but

what was it about like what was it about jazz

that just he is your like you know a lot of people

like shockwave a lot of you like soundwave a

lot of people like rotimus or optimus or whatever

else what was it about jazz that he is your character

okay i'm gonna go roundabout way uh but it comes

together okay uh as as a kid of the 80s, which

I am, and you are too. Do you remember the movie

Zapped? Barely, yeah. Yeah, when he was working

in a lab and he got like superpowers, like with

his mind. Oh, yeah. You had Charles in charge.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Anyway, Scatman Carruthers

was in that movie. He played like the janitor

guy. And when I was a kid, I was like, wow, I

know that voice from somewhere. Come to find

out he was in The Shining. And when I got older

and got into the paranormal stuff, I watched

The Shining and I was like, I brought those two

together. Come to find out he does the voice

for jazz, you know, and it was that voice. I

don't understand why I was drawn to it. And then

he brought like the pimp. Mac Daddy to jazz,

you know, he's like, yeah, man, I'm cool with

that. You know, he was all like hip and stuff

and yeah. And the character of jazz, you know,

he's the special ops guy. He's. No matter what

size he is, he'll be like the first one. Oh,

let's get the guys together. Let's go kick some

butt. You know, it's like he was always the first

one in, you know, no job was too hard for him.

He never was like, I ain't doing that. You got

to be crazy, crazy crack drop from his prime.

I ain't doing that. He just jumped in and did

it. And it was just something about the Kanho.

I don't know. It just, when I was a kid, he was

always my favorite. And then as I got older and

put the pieces together, it was, I think it was

the actor, Scatman more than it was the actual

jazz. You know, it's like, you know, and then

Hong Kong Foobie, you know, it's like. It's the

character the the guy that did the voice. I think

I followed him more than I actually Love jazz.

So it's like once he passed away You know, I

have I don't know half my transformer shelves

are all jazz. I actually have to Make just him,

you know shop for him It's just something about

the car the style, you know the Porsche, you

know when I was a kid there's like the Porsche

was the The crap back then, you know, it's like

everybody all a poor so you have to be rich down

one of those You know, you know live coming from

the ghetto and it's like, you know Hey, look,

I got a miniature one and he's a badass because

he just goes and blows stuff up, you know and

He survived the war. He survived the movie. He

wasn't like blown apart in the first two seconds

of the movie the animated movie in 86 He actually

survived into his later and then you know He

he did the Olympics and he was the fastest in

the Olympics and then he just kind of disappeared

Yeah, well, yeah that that was because scatman

at that time had passed away Right, and that's

not something you can recast No, and you can't

like do somebody else's voice, but I can understand

them going to the next gen You know if you want

to call it's almost like there was a generation

one 0 .5 in there, you know, cuz once Rodimus

took over You know, it's like they didn't have

any really need for the old guys, you know anymore

because they had They had all the new guys They

didn't really have room for the old ones. So

there's kind of like oh jazz won the Alien Olympics

and okay, cool, you know, and then that's how

they ended him Yeah, and then the new movie that

came back I was so excited Oh jazz is gonna be

in the you know in the babe Bay film and then

Starscream kills them and it was just Starscream

doesn't kill him Megatron rips him in half. Oh,

yeah. What am I doing Starscream? Megatron kills

them. Yeah, and you know they could have so much

more for him, but That repaint that I don't know

if anybody's watched that video that I did when

they they did the jazz movie the movie jazz Yeah,

and they repainted him one. Yeah storyline on

the back of the card was ratchet rebuilt him

and he was spark was still alive and He wanted

something Something more that stood out and he

picked the g1 the colors not knowing they were

g1 He just seen that car and wanted to go with

it So it's like the same style car, the Pontiac,

and it's just painted G1. But I actually read

that when the review was on the back of the card,

and I think I still have it. But it's a whole

big story about how Ratchet got together and

rebuilt him. He wasn't quite dead yet. He was

just ripped in half, but they could rebuild him.

So he's still out there somewhere, at least in

The Hasbro world. He's still alive. Yeah, they

gave me hope and I was like, oh cool Maybe he'll

show up on pride, but you know, I doubt it, but

you never know. Yeah like for me And and this

is more so about your obsession with the character

But when it comes to the voices, obviously scat

man is is the end -all be -all What I find funny

is that Darius McCrary Eddie from Family Matters

is the voice of jazz in the movie Only I didn't

know that. Yeah. Oh wow Eddie Eddie from family

matters the older the older brother, right? Yeah,

it's McCrary was the voice of jazz in the film

and then you have Phil Lamar in animated and

I and I know that jazz I I'm not sure if jazz

has gotten a voice in war for Cybertron or not

I don't remember if he did or not. I don't know

I believe that something goes. No, I don't I

don't know Look it up. But anyway film are in

animated did Because animated is such its own

style. It's such its own universe. It's such

its own thing film are brought more coolness

to What jazz is and you want to talk about a

G1 homage? I mean that car and those colors.

Oh Yeah, all you need is the number four on there

and You're in yeah and I don't know there's hope

that I never really got into animated because

you know that was the part of my life I was grown

up and I was just like okay I'm gonna I didn't

follow transformers anymore but the hub network

is starting to play and they were actually on

tonight they played like a mini marathon of them

and and I I have the jazz you know from the figure

from them with a numb chuck tailpipe things right

Which is kind of cool, but I never actually watched

it, so I didn't have a connection there. It was

just because it was jazz, and it looks like G1.

It's the same color scheme and stuff. But now

I can actually get into reading or watching that,

hopefully, when I catch it on the hub. Yeah,

you will. Because I've heard good things about

it. Yeah, you will absolutely love. Isn't he

like Ninja, him and. Yeah, him and Prowler the

Ninjas. But you will love his his voice for For

jazz in in animated because it's such a cool

cool thing no Troy Troy Baker as jazz Jeff fire

and kickback Where do you see that I went to

Wikipedia? Fall of Cybertron and it has voice

voice cast yeah Yeah, I don't Yeah, but see the

I don't I don't I I know in war for Cybertron.

He was a unlockable He wasn't He wasn't part

of the I don't think he's part of the core characters

That you can play as without unlocking it or

he was one of those store exclusives So I've

never actually heard the voice for jazz in the

games But just out of the cartoons I mean and

it's so funny when I when I interviewed Phil

When I interviewed Phil Lamar the first time

around, I had to. I asked him, I said, so did

the animated producers want you to do a scat

man or did they want you to do your own thing?

He said, oh no, they wanted me to do my own thing.

Because once you have scat man in your head,

you can't go back. And I said, well, can you

give us your scat man? And he did. It was like,

I swear to God, it was like Scatman just rose

from the grave because it was because Phil, Phil

Lamar, John DiMaggio, Billy West, all these people,

Maurice LaMarche, they're all a lot of the voice

actors nowadays are, you know, Jess Harnell,

amazing impressionists. And just when he did

that, I was like. Oh my god. It's like I'm talking

to scat man. Yeah it literally was because it

was like oh wow um and it was just so cool so

what what else about jazz like what what was

the um what was the first jazz toy you got was

the g1 toy it was the g1 toy and that goes back

to last week when we were talking about you know

the toys that you collected and stuff and when

I when I fell in love with that it because It

seemed like it had a little bit more articulation

than most blocky g1 toys, you know that Yeah,

his legs were actually the bottom of the car

But you can move his you know his arms and he

had guns and just the look of them. I mean it

Yeah, he he had door wings But in the cartoon

he didn't have door wings and that one thing

it still drives me crazy to this day if you watch

the cartoon Jazz doesn't have wings in the cartoon.

Right. But in all the toys that you ever see,

Jazz has the doors as those wings, which I never

understood. But I don't know. It's just something

about it. I can't put my finger on it. I don't

know if anybody else can connect with a toy or

a collectible or a movie or something. You just

love it and you can't really put it in the words.

Why? you have a connection with it. I just I

don't really know why. Yeah, I don't. Oh, well,

I think it's I honestly think it's for some of

us. It's not about the toys. It's more so about

the media. It's about the cartoons. It's about,

you know, well, not necessarily the movie, but

it's it's it. it's about all that stuff and you

know it it's about the legacy that scatman had

as jazz and you know the fact that oh he's also

hong kong fu you know he's also this but that

voice as you know as phil told me once you get

that in your head you you just can't go you can't

think of anything else here is what you think

of jazz you think of scatman and i know a lot

of people you know like animated batman what

do you think of you know if they try to give

somebody else batman's you know to do that much

voice which they have it's just not the same

it's not that connection that the fans have the

batman voices are It depends on who's doing it

and what kind of inflection it is. Obviously,

Kevin Conroy is and always will be the ultimate

animated Batman. Exactly. Second place for me

in that for Batman voices for me is Bruce Greenwood

from Under the Red Hood, the dude that played

Captain Pike in Star Trek. He did an amazing

Batman voice. You know if you want to go one

step further and not talk about Bruce Wayne But

talk about like Terry McGinnis from Batman Beyond

Wilfred L did a great job as a future Batman

But if you're just talking about Bruce Wayne

for me, it's Kevin Conroy and Bruce Greenwood

Everybody else is just kind of oh, okay. That's

that's Batman and I know coming up later this

year in September They're gonna release the dark

knight returns part one the next DC universe

animated movie and Robert was his dog god Robert

Weller Robocop is gonna be Batman. I just don't

I don't see it I just don't you know as much

as I love Robocop and as awesome as Robocop is

I just don't I Don't see his voice being I don't

see Robocop being Batman. I just can't envision

that at all But no, when Phil did jazz and anime,

I'll have to find the list of episodes that he's

in so you can seek them out. Seek them out on

YouTube or whether you wait till they're on the

hub because what Phil did was jazz is a cool

cat. Essentially, he's you know, he's hip. He's

got style. He's he has a like a love for the

human race He's fascinated by rights and he wants

that he's almost like, you know, you guys can

go back to Cybertron I'm staying here because

I love the music. I love the culture, you know,

I'm here to protect these guys It is something

I love, you know, he fell in love with earth

instantly and there's no rhyme or reason for

it Yeah, you know, he just loves the culture

of the music and it's like he You can see him

just you know his passion for humans when he

actually interacted with them Yeah, no. Yeah,

totally and I I don't know why I just have It

just it made a connection with me when I was

a kid and it's always stuck with me And I like

I said, I I don't know why um this Troy Baker

dude That's doing the voice in fall of Cybertron.

Yeah, um, you might know him from young justice

that he played to face Okay Just like different

things. He's done Avengers Earth's mightiest

hero. He was in that he's done a lot of voice

acting So but he's a white dude, so I don't know.

Hopefully he can pull it off Yeah, that's and

depends if he you know if you get got that voice

down Oh god now I have an urge to insert the

Eddie Murphy clip. Oh god Get out of here you

degenerate It just depends on on what kind of

inflection, you know Everyone to this point in

animation and film Everyone that has done jazz

has been a african -american actor between scatman

Phil and andarius And it just depends it it just

depends on what you know He's going to sound

like and if jazz is going to have a more centralized

role in the game I don't know you know I'm not

gonna judge it cuz I haven't heard it yet You

know I haven't heard what his voice is gonna

sound like have you played the first one at all?

Or for cyber turn. Oh, yeah. Yeah. See I haven't

actually physically played it. I'm actually watching

em go play it on his channel So because he's

hysterical, but I wonder if he's gonna be like,

you know You get to pick like optimists and you

have two side characters that just banter back

and forth as you're playing, you know That could

be it Not to actually have like a story like

a mode, you know, like a role in it He's just

gonna be like one of those guys they're going.

Oh, we're getting shot at we need to recharge,

you know, yeah I don't know. Ooh, wow. Wait,

weird topic kind of going back. I'm sorry. It's

alright. I just was going on Twitter and Ghostbuster

fans just tweeted a painfully truthful review

of Maddie Collector's Dana Barrett and it's off

the bottom says review. It's Paul's Paul's video.

Oh, that's funny. Yeah, so it's like It's getting

around. Anyway, I'm sorry We were just talking

about that before we actually went on air about

how bad it is and it's just funny that they just

boasted it Yeah, and you know, you know, the

funny thing is though about you know people that

get attached to certain characters like, you

know for me you know in g1 I Liked like As a

kid, I wanted those characters to pop off the

screen. I was telling another friend of ours,

Spada, because I was talking to him before we

recorded this episode, and as a kid, the four

Transformers toys I hated the most as a kid because

I thought they just were so just underdone and

it wasn't... what I saw on the screen, Bumblebee

and Cliffjumper. The G1 Bumblebee. They're too

small. I'm not saying they have to be huge, but

I'm saying they need to be bigger than fitting

in between my thumb and index finger. At least

have it fit in my hand. It's funny how the smallest

character in G1 became the biggest, most selling.

Let's use him as the face of the enterprise.

Yeah. Yeah. The most repainted character ever.

And I love the G1 Bumblebee. I love the character

in the cartoon. I just think the toys, I think

all those cars needed to be a little bit bigger.

Because they were like, they weren't even matchbox

size or hot wheel size. They were like Micro

Masters almost. Yeah. You remember the ones that

you actually put the penny in the back and then

you pull them back and let them do different

tricks by how you had the penny in them? Yeah.

It was like they were that size. Like maybe the

size of your thumb like seriously the other two

I add the other two g1 toys. I absolutely loathed

the jump starters twin twist and and top spin

I Because I played with them so much I wore the

wheels out on both of those toys The only thing

I liked about those toys was the auto the auto

transform You know, I love that about them. But,

you know, for different people, you know, characters

resonate differently. For me, you know, in G1,

it was like Astro Train. You know, when you get

to the movie, it's Rodimus. I don't care what

anybody says. I like Hot Rod and Rodimus. I like

both of them. I think I like Hot Rod more than.

No, wait, I like Rodimus better than Hot Rod.

Well, the way I look at it is it's a it's a maturity

thing. Wait, do we already talk about this, talking

about maturity thing? Do you think his knowledge

came from the Matrix? Do we already talk about

that? I don't think so. Because I had a theory

that the Matrix holds all of the memories of

the Primes, right? Right. So is the Matrix a

actually sentient being itself? In G1, I do not

think so. In the movies, I'm not sure. I think

in the movies, more so, it's more so of a spark.

It's more so of a living energy. In G1, it wasn't

energy, but I don't think it was a living energy

because it didn't auto -trans. It didn't make

itself smaller or larger or whatever. I don't

know. But it was insensitive. It held all the

things, and it made Orion Pax into Optimus Prime.

It's like, how did that transformation happen?

Did it cause... I always wondered that. I don't

know. Sorry. No, no. And that... And that's a

fair question, because honestly, I'm not sure.

In G1, we know that Alpha Trion remade Orion

Pax into Optimus in the series before the movie

happened with The Matrix. And then once the movie

happened with The Matrix, introducing Transformers'

biggest MacGuffin ever, it was like, oh, well,

if you lose The Matrix, the Matrix energy is

dissipated is dissipated your your memories are

gone, and I think now it's more so prevalent

in prime where How much of prime have you watched

I thought I watched it all okay? I'm caught up

now all right, so I just want to make sure I'm

not spoiling anything for you You know at the

end of season one with the unicorn thing When

optimus looted, you know optimus reverts back

to Orion Pax. That's really where it started

You know becoming like a living energy thing

in g1. It wasn't anything like that Yeah, because

once once he you know, he would revert it back

He had no memory of being optimus prime, right?

It's like but when he gets the matrix back, he

remembers all the primes all the history It's

like right right matrix that holds all that information

in in transformers prime. Yes in g1 I Just think

it was there to serve as oh, this is the Autobot,

you know matrix of leadership It has all this

wisdom, you know, well in the movie the animated

movie in 86 when he When he's on his deathbed,

yeah, and he's like I will be one with the matrix

or whatever Yeah, you want to rise from our ranks,

right? It's like how did he know he knew that

he didn't know it but the matrix was telling

him Maybe it's it's it used its wisdom or whatever

it had Right. Yes showing him the future. So

it's okay to pass away because there will be

another one that rise from our ranks Like he

already knew it was gonna happen. Yeah, he didn't

know it. Maybe the matrix did it was almost like

it's almost like Venom, you know, it's like it's

like a parasite, but it's a good parasite Well,

the matrix knew it because I mean they revealed,

you know If you're someone nowadays that you're

just watching that movie to watch and you never

grew up on it, you'd be like, hmm, I wonder.

But as soon as I saw that, I knew. As soon as

that scene happened, the Matrix dropped and Hot

Rod picked it up in the giant blue glowy light.

I knew that he was the chosen one. But getting

back to the character selection stuff, it's like...

It just depends on like what characters people

think are cool. And I think one of the reasons

why I constantly not berate you about it I mean,

it's your character choice and that's fine. But

one of the things that really kind of was like

Really you had to do that but One of the toy

matrixes on your Mighty Mugs jazz and I'm like,

no jazz does not need jazz is too cool for the

matrix there's no way jazz needs the the baggage

that comes with that matrix i always thought

he would be a good leader because he would just

be like man why we just he can be an excellent

leader but he doesn't need the matrix he didn't

call that baggage yeah he doesn't need to be

jazz prime or something whatever it would turn

out to be oh god stop giving them ideas No, I

took it off of there most the main reason I kept

it on there for all the all that time for over

a year or so It was just to drive you insane

when I take pictures or videos that would show

it, you know I try to slow down just enough hoping

that you would see it or watch it just to drive

you saying it's on Optimus Prime now So it's

where it belongs and jazz isn't gonna be all

emo because he has the power Yes, so I don't

it's not just like with um Transformers, you

know, it's like with Star Wars or any other kind

of movie You pick a character and you hold on

to that character and it could be just a random

person a random character you know everybody

thinks I'm weird because I love Darth Maul and

I have a lot of toys of Darth Maul. It's like

yeah, you got cut in half and you know with with

the new Series that's on the cartoon series,

you know, he's back and he has robot legs and

he's with his brother And you know, he's still

alive, but he's insane Yeah, I was I was like

part of me was going Oh god, why'd they bring

him back? But the other part the fanboy part

was like, yes, he's still alive. He's still awesome

But you know like with any movie it's like, you

know Just pick a random movie and you fall in

love with that character and you have no idea

why Yeah, and it might not even be the main character

It could be like a side character that was only

in it for like three minutes, but for some reason

Like Candice she loves or a sing from Star Wars

And she was in you know the pod race for like

two seconds You know and that's all she was ever

in in any of the movies, but she loves the character

Well, you know you take Another one you can take

is Marcus Brody. I don't know if anybody really

loves that character But that was you know an

endearing part of Indiana Jones and the last

crusade was you know That was the whole you know

in joke about it up. He got lost in his own museum

You know right? Yeah, you know you take that

character you take you know you take Cheetor

or Megatron from Beast Wars. I love Cheetor.

One of the reasons why I love Cheetor from Beast

Wars and Beast Machines is because Cheetor is

Beast Wars' equivalent to Hot Rod slash Rodimus.

He is. If you look at Cheetor when he first appears

in Beast Wars... He's really young, he's really

impatient, he's really impetuous. He'll go off

half -cocked without thinking about stuff. And

as he matures, as he goes through his Transmetal

2 form, and then once you get to Beast Machines,

he's essentially an adult. and I thought that

was a more flushed out way of doing the kind

of like the Rodimus storyline of you know in

Beast Machines he takes he takes over from from

Optimus because Optimus is off doing his mental

mind fullery Jedi monkey tricks and stuff but

no you know Cheetor and you know obviously you

know Steve who runs podcast network with me his

favorite character is Megatron from Beast Wars

and and all that stuff and that's you know that's

that's all great everybody's gonna have you know

favorite characters from stuff but it was like

you know i was like how can you like just buy

jazz i know i know you don't just buy jazz stuff

but it's like the the biggest part of your collection

is pretty much the jazz toys right Well, yeah,

like I'm saying half my stuff is jazz, you know,

I have I have you know reveal a shield I have

the g1 Not not original g1, but the redo the

American version I got The movie jazz did the

first movie jazz Paul actually gave me his which

was like his third review he ever did So it's

kind of like a history kind of thing. I feel

like one of Paul's like first reviews and then

I had to repaint in a G1 of the same figure and

my daughter was like dad it's the same figure

it's just painted different I'm like I know I

don't care it's jazz it's a better version of

jazz because it looks better in white and then

you know I got the alternators jazz and the animated

jazz and you know you know and it just keeps

going and then hopefully I'm still on the fence

about the fall of Cybertron jazz I'm Probably

will get it cuz it's jazz because I'm a tarred

like that, but I Don't I don't know even though

it's like a really horrible figure Yeah, but

hopefully right repel labels or you know that

if somebody comes out with a better Yeah, I don't

know I'm just I'm turning into more Ninja Turtles

now because you know now that need and Ninja

Turtles is hot and hopefully tomorrow I'm gonna

go out and try to find them all because my son

wants the blue one he keeps going dad I want

the blue one because for some reason he's drawn

the blue one and that goes back to and I have

no idea why he's four but he likes blue one you

know it's like you know everybody has their own

and I was like Brandon why do you like the blue

one I don't know why he's blue I like him It's

like, you know his name and he knows his name

and he goes he's the leader, you know, cuz he's

seen the commercials on Nickelodeon And in the

new song the rap song whenever he's like the

leader, you know That's my only gripe so far

about the new series is the theme song that's

You know, they showed that off at Comic Con this

year I like the footage. I don't mind that it

has an anime -ish style to it. I don't mind that

at all. The voice cast is great. I think it's

kind of weird that Jason Biggs has evolved from

the guy who fucked the pie to Leonardo the leader

of the turtles. Exactly. The only part of the

new 2012 Turtles series that Nickelodeon will

be putting out later this year is that I don't

really care for is that theme song. I mean, they

kept part of the old school. Right. You know,

the Turtles theme in the background, but then

they had to go with a rap, you know, to make

it hip for kids now. Because they're trying to

get younger, generate, you know, 10, 12 year

olds to like the Ninja Turtles. I'm sorry. Getting

someone to like a new series based off of an

old series. A rap song is not the way to go.

You need a good old... Not old -fashioned, but

you need a good old rock song in there. Something

that sticks in your head, you know? Yeah, something

that's gonna stick in your head. Not like...

I think that's one of the reasons why I've never

watched Voltron... Oh, the new one? Yeah. Yeah.

Panthero -Force or Panther. Voltron, whatever

the hell. Voltron Force, whatever the fuck it's

called. Farce? Yeah, yeah, Voltron Fars is really

what it should be called. But it's like. Like

I tried watching that first episode and I. I

couldn't do it. I thought the episode was all

right. It wasn't like the best thing in the world,

but that theme like Voltron is not a rap theme

song and is an anthematic rock. Almost opera,

almost like a rock opera theme song. It shouldn't

have rap in it. Same thing with the turtles,

the turtles. Unless it's the turtles doing the

rap. It shouldn't have you know It shouldn't

have the rap or vanilla or vanilla ice. Yeah,

I was gonna say well If you really want a rap

song for the intro to the new turtle series get

vanilla ice back and have him sing the rap That

would have been a hell of a lot better It's weird,

you know cuz like um You you know who Jeter is

and he's a friend. Yes. Yeah, he's a friend about

the bottom is and all of us and he You know,

he's like, what, 15, 16, whatever. I don't even

know. But he never watched Ghostbusters, ever.

That's something with that kid. And it's like,

dude, how can you be 12 years old and never seen

Ghostbusters? Either your parents, or you know,

miserably failed as being your parent, because

they should introduce you to that, you know,

at early ages, because it's great. But then he

watched it, and he was like, oh my god, this

is so awesome. It's like... Kids nowadays there's

so much out there that they have no idea like

music like you were just saying they don't they

don't know about music they you know, it's like

Kesha with the dollar sign and and you know,

it's like all that stuff with their being forced

to listen to Force fed through the radio, you

know, and hopefully parents are out there going

here listen to this and they'll put on zeppelin

or or You know the old classic rock, you know,

my daughter Thank goodness loves like Blondie

and early 80s and I got my son rocking around

going pop pop pop music you know from 80s good

music you know stuff I grew up on hopefully I

learned them to open their mind not just be stuck

it with Kesha and and Lady Gaga and Nickelback

hey hey watch it sorry I had something stuck

in my throat yeah Nickelback is a hell of a lot

better than Lady Gaga and Kesha. A wet sponge

is better than Lady Gaga and Kesha. But now it's

like the boy bands are coming back. Yeah. Yay.

We got One Direction and Big Time Rush and this

other band I don't even know their name that

my daughter listens to. And so I put in Backstreet

Boys and NSYNC. You know cuz she was like who's

that I was like, you know, Justin Timberlake

is and she's like, yeah Kinda and I was like,

well he used to be a singer, you know He's not

just an actor. He's a singer and and showed her

some of those and she's like this is horrible

It was like now, you know how I felt in high

school Music You you you have like a you know

in a band, you know people pick their favorite,

you know, it's not always the lead singer You

know and that goes back to what we were talking

about. It's like, you know, that's my philosophy

on music You know you take you take a band like

theory of a dead man or live or Nickelback or

Creed or whatever you take yeah, okay, let's

just use for example Nickelback if Chad Kroger

ever said, I'm done with this band. You know,

if they ever had a falling out and the band wanted

to go on as the band, but Chad didn't and they

got a new lead singer, it would not be the same

Nickelback. It would not like like that's one

of my biggest reservations about the band live.

uh... it you know and call it it was a lead singer

since that band's inception he is you know he

a falling out of the band they're now using uh...

they're gonna be using uh... christian or chris

i forget what his name is they're gonna have

a new lead singer don't know no no no no no not

not not not chris dot reads uh... christian i

believe is his name i do have a thing about life

I grew up in, okay, go ahead. Hold on, hold on,

hold on. I got a story. So they're getting a

new lead singer and my only, like, I don't mind

live, you know, Chad Gracie, Chad Taylor, and

Patrick Dahlheimer. I don't mind them getting

a new lead singer now, you know, moving forward

with new material. My only reservation with it

is, how is this lead singer gonna sound? Singing

the classic lot, you know, I like it like in

crashes and and you know they stood up for love

and the distance to hear and Dolphins crack that's

really my only reservation about it is is you

know that new lead singer singing the classic

songs Am I still gonna check it out? Yeah, I

don't know if I'll buy it But I'll check it out

on iTunes whenever it does come out. What's your

story with life? Back in Pennsylvania from after

the Pennsylvania is where I'm from like Lancaster

or Lancaster for people that live there call

it. But the band live is from New York, Pennsylvania,

which is right down the road. So I actually seen

them before they were anybody. They were still

in high school and their band name was Public

Affection, which was horrible. Anyway, they were

just like, you know, chess club geeks pretty

much. And then. they started getting bigger and

bigger and having this girl fan following in

Pennsylvania. And every time we turn around,

they were playing somewhere in town, you know,

and just pimping themselves out and getting bigger

and bigger. And then once, you know, the early,

the early stuff hit, you know, like the lightning

crashes and I alone, once that hit, they became

complete a -holes. And they're like, you know,

went out and bought these big houses and you

couldn't touch them because we're rock stars

now. and completely changed who they were because

they were just like dorky kids and then they

got famous anyway i have this thing about life

well the thing about them is it i don't think

it was the other it wasn't so much the other

members it was kowalczyk right You know, he was

the one that kind of turned into the douchebag.

Yeah, he's he was the egomaniac. I mean, even

before they were anybody, he wouldn't let people

come up and talk to him before they they went

on stage because he was in the zone, quotes,

unquote. Yeah, he was one of those guys. He wasn't

in the zone. He was on the weeds. That's what

he was. He was on something. But that goes to

like, what is it? Foreigner. I was looking it

up the other day and they're on tour, but it's

not the original singer. It's some other. douche

that they brought in to try to cover it or like

journey, you know, it's like all those old bands

from the 70s 80s that the singers, you know,

they either passed away or they just quit the

band. And then they they bring these new guys

in to try to like karaoke their songs is how

I see it. It's like you didn't write this song.

You shouldn't be singing the song. You know,

it's like that's not that's just like going to

a bar and hearing some kid. That's drunk singing,

you know Journey songs. Mm -hmm. Just I don't

know that's when you go to see journey Who do

you think of you know, it's like way off the

top of your head. You don't think of some guy

It's like who's this? Why is he singing the song

badly? Yeah Well for me at this point in time

like like I love all the you know All the 80s

are like, you know, Billy Joel Madonna all you

know Lionel Richie all that like I love all those

80s artists and all that stuff But for me right

now Rock sugar is where it's at rock sugar is

wacko Warner Jess Harnell lead singer As I said

before Jess is one of those people that is a

mimic and he doesn't just mimic Voices like the

dude sings. I swear to god you would think it

was Steve Perry. You said rock sugar. Yeah rock

sugar They what their jest is they take the hard

metal riffs of the 80s and combine them with

pop lyrics so you'd have like Don't Stop the

Sandman which is Journey's Don't Stop Believing

mixed with Metallica's Enter Sandman and it's

not mixed it's a it's one song it's a one song

and It's not like one half is Enter Sandman and

the other half is Don't Stop Believing it is

one solid fluid song and it's just It's one of

the best mashups I've ever heard. It's just amazing.

Shook me like a prayer. Shook me like a prayer.

Shook me all night long from ACDC and like a

prayer from Madonna. It's just amazing, amazing

music that recaptures what the 80s pop scene

was with the 90s, 80s and 90s metal was. Who's

in the band? Jess Hartnell is the lead singer,

voice of Wacko Warner from Animaniacs. Chuck

Duran, who is an award -winning demo producer.

They've both been in music all their lives. And

Alex Track, and I forget who the other people

are off the top of my head. But essentially,

Jess and Chuck are the two main ones. I have

to check that out more. That's kind of cool.

I don't think I've ever heard it. Because I'm

still stuck in the 90s and I'm like with the...

I wouldn't say grunge rock, but just like weird

music that nobody's ever heard of before. So

funny. Let me see here. But yeah, no. I know

we've kind of gone way off track here, but still,

it's alright. We're still there. I mean, we're

still into why people fall in love with certain

characters, like with the music and with whatnot.

you know it's like out of bands it's like you

know Bon Jovi do you really like Bon Jovi or

do you like the bass player you know it's like

and people argue about it all the time yeah it's

like the Hobbit you know who's your favorite

Hobbit you know it's like I don't know Harry

Potter you know who's your favorite Harry Potter

character you know do you like Malfoy or do you

like you know I like Snape I'm a Snape guy Always

have been it's like I don't know why but he's

a great actor. That's why I mean You know when

he was in dogma and he had the wings and it's

like it was awesome He didn't have the butt People

that watched haven't seen dogma probably have

no idea I've seen dogma sadly Sneeze there for

a minute. Um, but yeah So I think that's uh,

I think it's gonna wrap it up kind of a short

show this week But I think we've pretty much

talked all we can about you know the characters

So we will see you next week when we will have

me and the Octobotomus Going back at it with

more Maddie collector stuff Yay Maddie collector,

it's fun. You make it so easy. I know easy to

hate Well, because it is. Alright, we will catch
