About this Episode

The hosts review three episodes from the first season of Knight Rider: "No Big Thing," "Trust Doesn't Rust," and "Inside Out." They discuss their disdain for the cliché plot of "No Big Thing" while noting the action-heavy "Trust Doesn't Rust," which introduces K.I.T.T.'s evil prototype, K.A.R.R. Finally, they cover "Inside Out," highlighting the unique mission structure and the tension of Michael Knight going undercover.

Bank Rider, a shadowy flight into the dangerous

world of a man who does not exist. Hello and

welcome to Beyond the Night brought to you by

the GCRN and Audible .com I'm one of your hosts,

TFJ and Mike, and joining me is Dion the Music

Man. Hello. Hello, sir. How are you? I'm good.

I'm good, I guess. Today we're going to be going

Beyond the Night and reviewing three more episodes

of Knight Rider Classic Season 1. Kit, hit the

turbo boost. Michael, he's coming right at us.

I can see that. Do something. Put him on the

squad. Alright, and first up today is... is no

big thing. Devon lands in a small town lockup

on a misdemeanor, but his predicament becomes

deadly after a fellow prisoner is killed by the

cops. Devon's the only one who knew the man was

in jail. Town name is Linhurst Flats. Oh boy.

Again, with this whole plot. I like, and this

is kind of going into my Scanners on piece, but

I like that Devin is pretty much in his element,

you know, in his car, listening to his music

and this, that, the other thing, everything else.

And then, you know, he runs into these corrupt

cops and sheriff and judge. It's just a whole

corrupt county. Pretty much. It's like, it's

like, Oh God, can we please get an episode that

is worth something that actually has a decent

story? Cause this is so cliche. This plot...

It just... Oh my god, this plot sucks. This sucks

so hard. It's like the skinniest girl trying

to suck water through a garden. Oh, wow! Oh god,

um... Yeah, uh... There's not really much to

say about the plot here ladies and gentlemen

there is but thing of it I mean, it's it's essentially

Devon gets gets flim flammed and he gets locked

up and some reporter contacted him because of

corruption in this town and Michael has to come

in and save the day and he gets to run around

and I mean there really is nothing here really

isn't there really isn't a plot thing and it's

There isn't really much to say about this particular

episode No, not at all. Not at all. So, yeah,

that's... Why do we get to start off this episode

with such a bad episode? Oh my God, no plot,

no suspense, no nothing. It's so predictable.

Well, there's a few action scenes, but... well,

yeah, there's a few good action scenes, but that

doesn't happen until the end when Michael and

kit come in and Yeah, I know. Yeah, you know

they turbo boosted over the county line or something

like that They have like the car, you know kit

going in reverse Yeah, yeah, that was cool. It

was neat, but I mean as far as the overall story

Yeah, the plot was boring. Okay. Yeah, I mean

you could you can watch the episode You can watch

the episode, but it's like, okay No, can't do

this. Wake me up when it's over. Or wake me up

when Michael Knight's on screen with Kit, then

I might be interested. So let's turn the scanners

on for no big thing. And as I said a second ago,

I love seeing Devin in his element. Just as last

week in in just my bill I liked seeing Devin

outside of his element inside the construction

elevator, right? Here he him in that classic

car and you know listening to his style of music

and everything else He is just sown his element

and then these you know the police Washington

the police cop the police officers pick him up

on a The speed trap as it were Hello, I get such

a laugh out of whenever every time someone always

tries to mess with kit. It's like they can't

help themselves And then Apparently we find out

in this episode that Devin does have a corrupt

and evil side because he breaks out of jail on

his own. Yeah And apparently he also enjoys hitting

people oh the end Yes, that was simply wonderful.

Yes, it was. He hit the judge. That was great.

So that was classic. Somebody should have got

a still shot of that. Oh, man. Yeah, it's. It's

very, very, very awesome. What about you? What

did you have for turning the scanners on for

good points about this episode? Anything? Well,

the action scenes. I mean, like you said, Devin

is in his own element and is doing his own thing.

And yes, he gets locked up. It's sad. But I think

the action scenes do it for me. You know, like

you said, there's really no plot. The plot's

just horrible. Yeah. It's time to turn the scanners

off and I thought I was gonna have a long list

But I don't have any I really don't because the

story was so just bland and as we've said The

only note I wrote down was great more corrupt

cops and a corrupt judge nice Yeah, I really

don't have anything for scanners off. It's I

mean the episode speaks for itself on how just

lackluster and uninteresting it is it really

does um it's it there's not really much to say

for the scanners off i mean the plot the plot

seems interesting but it just kind of it almost

wants it it just kind of almost wants to put

you in nodsville if you will until you know until

michael comes on and saves the day that's about

it really so you know we could repeat ourselves

about this episode over and over again Pretty

much or we could just move on exactly that would

be a good idea Three It was exactly like me.

Not exactly, buddy. It almost killed me. Are

you awake? We're moving. We're moving. We're

moving. Huh? It wasn't a dream. You're here.

I'm here. It's here. Wait a minute, wait a minute,

wait a minute. Where are we? This is where your

companion told me to stop last night. I did?

Actually, most of what you said was incoherent.

I did, however, distinctly hear the word stop.

You're just a car, ain't you? Not just a car.

I am the Knight Automated Roving Robot. Car,

if you prefer. I am the prototype of the car

of the future. I mean, you're a regular real

thing. Not just something out of a nightmare

like you looked last night. Nothing has changed

since last night. Oh, yeah. It's easy for you

to say. Where did you come from, anyway? And

how did you get in that building? Edifice was

the laboratory where I was first activated, and

where I was also deactivated. Deactivated? You

mean somebody turned Joel? My creator, Wilton

Knight. He brought me into the world and then

turned on me. Oh, take it easy, take it easy.

My old man, same. Yeah, you can't count on nobody

except me and Tony. Interesting. I will enter

that information in my data banks. I am indebted

to both of you. You have reactivated me. How

may I serve you? Service? What do you mean, service?

I have checked my data on basic human desires.

Therefore, I understand your needs. Come on.

You wish to eat? Well, yeah. You wish to drink?

Yeah. You wish to reproduce? Yeah. Which one

first? Next up is the pasista resistance from

season one trust doesn't rust Michael is assigned

to stop car an evil prototype of kit Program

to survive at all costs and now on the loose

Very good episode with this one. This is, I kind

of see why now this did not follow Night of the

Phoenix because you need something to wash the

bad taste out of your mouth from the previous

episode. You do. I mean, you know, the whole,

the complete opposite from what we just said

about No Big Thing. Trust doesn't rust. You have

great story great action set pieces you've got

all this stuff the whole story the whole plot

basically is is that it's a dark and stormy night

and at a warehouse and these two two crooks are

gonna break into the warehouse and lab three

and I almost equate cars scanner noise to be

done done Dundun. Car is Jaws. Because, I mean,

Car is just evil incarnate and just that whole

mystery of it all. Almost kind of reliving the

kit reveal scene in Night of the Phoenix with

the darkness and the scanner and just having

those guys stand there in the middle of the room.

And then the whole thing of, you know, they don't

remember what the hell happened. They kind of

blacked out in the next morning. Then you got

Michael going in there to make sure that it locked

up. What was it? It was a county auction or something?

I think it was one of the buildings that was

being sold off in the county auction or something.

They wanted to make sure it was secure. They

find the guard unconscious. The guard says lab

3 and Michael goes in and investigates and He

gets caught in the scanner lights again. Just

like with kit and Nearly gets mold nearly gets

mowed down Yeah, pretty much And we find out

that kit has a twin The original prototype night

automated roving robot car And kit says as much

he says Michael. I think that might have been

my twin He goes nuts not quite buddy. It nearly

killed me And we go on from there to where Devin

is explaining what car was car was the original

prototype and The biggest difference between

kit and car is that cars programming with self

-preservation whereas kits is preservation of

human life, right? Wilton realized his mistake

and thought he had it destroyed, but apparently

not. Which is one thing that kind of bothers

me, and this isn't really a scanners off thing,

it's more of a plot thing. If Wilton realized

his mistake, why wouldn't he have just destroyed

the car instead of leaving it in storage? Probably

because maybe Wilton thought, okay, if we get

the right programmers to actually go in and reprogram

car, you know, then we'd have another car. You

know to work with kit, but yeah, fortunately

unfortunately it you know it didn't it didn't

work out that way you know in the whole the whole

warehouse scene You know the lab scene where

they break into the to the old night Warehouse

there in the beginning the whole thing. I was

the whole time. I was thinking boy if there was

an auction here Yeah, Dave Hester would have

gone away with a car But overall, the plot is

great. The story is amazing. What about you?

What did you think of the overall plot in this

one? Plot is great. Story is awesome. Lots of

action scenes. It's on your seat action, just

the way, in my personal opinion, just the way

a Knight Rider episode should be. And I also

want to point out that Peter Cullen is the voice

of Carr in this one. Yes. And so for those of

you transformer nuts, there you are. But it's

also interesting to note as well, and I'll bring

this up later, but Peter Cullen was accidentally

and has still been accidentally been mistaken

for season three's car voice. Yeah, no, that's

not the case. It's Paul Fries in season three.

Right. Trust me. There's a big, huge difference.

I know. because of you know in the 80s as a kid

I would hear Peter Cullen outside of Transformers

and I'm like what the hell is Optimus Prime doing

here yeah because he was he was the narrator

of the Voltron Voltron will be back after these

right the announcer Yeah, he did he did the interstitials

for Voltron. He was Optimus Prime. He was Eeyore

He was car and I knew in season 3 that that was

not what's nice. That was not Peter Collin No,

no, no not the same voice at all But this episode

is great. Like you said it washes the it washes

the horrible taste out of your mouth with the

last episode Yeah, so it you know, it's it's

great. Um We actually get to see Kit and car

do battle for the first time. Yeah, I Didn't

really well, I guess I'll save that for the low

beams or the the skin is off. Yeah No, I just

I just had something come to mind. But but what

I love about the overall story in this is like

When Michael comes is like why didn't you tell

me about the other car blah blah blah Bonnie

just looks I'm like Sorry, that's my time my

time It's like, oh, plausible deniability, sure.

Which, in a way, to back her up, it kind of was.

Oh, no, it was. It was. It was. I'm not saying

it wasn't. No, but I mean, just in her defense,

I mean, it was before her time, because it was

kind of Wilton Knight and Devin Miles. And then

they brought Michael in. And Bonnie didn't get

in to the foundation, I guess, until, well. By

way of the episodes later, so it would be considered

years later, or maybe a month or two later. Yeah,

yeah. But overall, Trust doesn't rust. Awesome

episode. Simply, simply amazing episode. I am

the prototype of the car of the future. What

you saw was merely an inferior production line

model, a pale copy of the original. All right,

let's turn on the scanners here. oh my god optimus

prime is evil i love the continuity that they're

bringing out car versus the ring master the ring

master is ready to take your order what is that

voice Yeah, that's just so amazing. Tony lied

to the Rev. I really like Tony. I like Tony and

Rev. I wish they were in more episodes or just

like background characters in future episodes.

I really thought that they were really kind of

cool, the two contrasting with each other. What

was funny about Tony was that the guy that played

him... The guy the guy that played the the guy

that played him the people thought that he was

really drunk and it was so hilarious Yeah, because

you know he would show up, you know, and he was

playing a drunk and he really wasn't drunk but

people thought he was So it was just hilarious

to see that, you know, cuz you're playing a drunk

Yeah and damn those break -ins wow just seeing

car in action I mean just oh man the action stunts

and the action scenes in this episode are just

absolutely amazing I don't care about the money

I care about your immortal soul Tony yeah shut

up rev that was interesting didn't you see her?

no I was watching you deactivate the rev was

he malfunctioning? going after the gems they're

still in the county where else now this is this

isn't necessarily a problem I have but this is

something I want to point out and I know that

most television shows will use the same set for

different scenes but to me that whole thing of

car or kit whoever driving down and around I

swear, we will see that again. We will see that

exact same place, but used differently next week

in episode four with a plush ride. Yes. It is

the exact same. I will take a screen cap for

this episode's post and next week's episode post.

It's the exact same drive downhill and circle

around. It's the same dang thing. I noticed that.

I have seen that. Yes. You know, you're not going

after him are you? Wanna bet? Turn away! Turn

away! Yeah. No. No! What did you have first scanners

on? What did you like about Trust Doesn't Rust?

I actually liked the chase scenes. You know,

the action scenes of course. We touched on those

a little bit. The fact that Kit actually asks

Bonnie and Michael... Uh, why are you lying to

each other? What I love about scenes like that

is - That was just so awesome! Well, right, but

what I love about scenes like that is that Kit

will - He will ask a question and he's like,

Bonnie? Michael? Yes, Kit? Why are you lying

to each other? It's one of those things where

he - The question is their names at first and

then they have to answer him Yes, and then he

poses the question and that whole way of of dialogue.

I just absolutely love that in this series It's

awesome. Yeah, it's very just very it's very

well done. It was very well written back then

Yep, you know very much so What else you got

for for scanners on what other good points did

you like about this one the demise of car in

this one? Believe it or not, because the way,

like you said, turn away, turn away. Because

the playing pick and theory, if you will, was

actually kind of cool. So I liked that. Oh, I

agree. That was very, very well done. Like how

almost each not each area not each episode but

almost every other episode they're having to

add new gadgets to kit and Bonnie's like Yeah,

I'm just removing some stuff that you don't need

so I can insert this giant fucking laser But

no trust doesn't Absolutely amazing episode.

Great. The car doesn't have my programming to

protect human life. That's what I'm counting

on, buddy. What? Michael, I cannot allow you

to jeopardize your life. I am assuming control.

No, you're not, kid! Michael, you know all those

times I've called you irresponsible and impulsive?

I didn't mean it. Bonnie, remember all those

times I called you bossy and demanding? I didn't

mean it either. Michael, Bonnie. Yes, kid? Why

are you lying to each other? TURN AWAY Alright,

let's turn the scanners off, and how... How can

you say a bad thing about this episode? I really

only have two things. Well, of course small -time

crooks are gonna think small -time with bank

robberies and more. Like, when Tony and Riv realize

that Carr could do anything, and he's like, eat,

drink, reproduce, which one first? They go on

all these robberies and of course I know, you

know, Tony and Rev are not murderers, they're

not, you know, they're not, they're essentially

a small -time crook, you know, group and, you

know, small -time crook duo. And I get that,

but I don't know, that just kind of bugged me

about it. And the other thing that kind of bugged

me about this episode, now that I started to

think about it, is at the end, when Kit and Car

are talking to each other, it echoes. Like it

echoes look it's almost like their voices were

put through a loudspeaker And it's echoing out

in the environment like like you hear kit talking

to Michael in the car, and it sounds fine There's

no echo you hear a kit talking to car And I'll

I'll put this in the episode audio. I've already

grabbed it all so it'll be you know in the episode

here But it's yeah, it has some huge acoustic

sound to his voice Apparently so. And then Carr

does not. Yeah. Yeah. There is some huge difference.

I think those are the two things that bothered

me about that, like, you know, what you're saying.

I agree with those two things. You know, other

than that, the episode was awesome. Yeah. The

episode was just simply, simply awesome. And,

you know. It's just it's just so so great. So

we are gonna move on. My men are trained to go

into instant action. They got it for you, Colonel.

You're the Muhammad Ali of crime. What was that?

Why does he need a driver like me? That is on

a need -to -know basis. There's something wrong

with this guy. This operation goes into high

gear within 12 hours. There is no time for rivalry

in the ranks. Finally up today, we come to Inside

Out. Michael infiltrates a retired colonel's

gang of thieves, hoping to catch them red -handed

stealing a gold shipment. This is a very unique

episode, I would say. The basic plot here is

that they're gonna, you know, this colonel's

organization is gonna, you know, rob a gold shipment

or, you know... I just love the whole thing with

the story in the plot in this where it's the

whole switcheroo where they have one plan and

Then by the almost the end of the episode when

they're getting ready to execute the plan It

was almost like the Colonel was trying to ferret

out a mole as far as like oh wait No, we're you

know, we'll do this prison break thing another

day. This is what we're really after I like that

whole switcheroo about this story. Yeah, I do

too because it kept them on their toes. Oh Yes,

it did them on their toes Yes, it did. And what

I really liked about the plot in general is that

just the uniqueness of it, just the whole...

The fact that you don't start out with Michael

lounging on a foundation chair and then a mission

comes in, he's already on a mission. Right. Because

he's got to capture that guy. at the beginning

of the episode, and I really, really enjoyed

that about the plot. What about you? What did

you like about the plot? What I actually liked

about the plot is here is Michael and this other

Dugan. They're sitting there fighting in the

car, and Michael is pushing the steering wheel

of Kit, and Kit's like, if you want me to drive,

don't touch the wheel. So that was kind of cool.

And the fact that Michael goes in as Dugan, You

know, basically going undercover so that he can

find out what's going on and report back to Devin.

Yeah, yeah. I mean, the overall plot in this

one was just absolutely great. There are some

really great episodes of Knight Rider to this

point There's some a lot of a lot of rotten eggs

as well I think it's fascinating that we had

two out of three that are amazing Well one that's

amazing one that's damn good and then one that's

just you never need to see it again So yeah this

you know inside out as I said was very very unique

And we're going to get on to these scanners.

All right, so scanner's on. And as I said before,

I thought this was a very unique way to start

an episode with them already being on a mission

and just seeing the fight and just wondering

what the, you know, as a viewer, you're like,

what the hell is going on? Because normally,

as I said in the plot, we would have Michael

lounging around the foundation waiting for a

mission to come in. Or we would have something

where they just finished a mission and they're

on their way to the next one and then something

would happen like what happened in Deadly maneuvers

with you know some hot chick on the side of the

road and stuff like that But this one is something

unique where we hadn't seen this before No, and

I actually like the way that this you know starts

out like you were saying It's it's basically

action first getting the details Second and then

back to the action There really doesn't seem

to be any time for catching your breath. And

I like that about this episode. Yeah. I mean,

yeah. Yeah. There's no real catching your breath

at all. I love the illusion. Well, of course

it was an allusion I love that other those so

quick and I knew as soon as I saw Michael's snooping

around the Colonel's office and seeing the the

prison plans and he reports back to Devin I Knew

that twist was coming up switching up the maps

I Knew it. I thought it would be great. I just

and it works. It worked for that episode. Yeah,

it's awesome Yeah, I mean it absolutely did what

I also loved was um when they were pulling the

heist having to use kit as A standee right up

again. I just I thought that was great. What

about you? What'd you like about the well the

thing I liked is the thing I like to you know

about it was that You know when he when Michael

was talking to the lady there, you know She was

telling him about her problems and trying to

you know at the same time not blowing his cover

trying to find out about who each other were

and trying to save the young lady's daughter

and basically bust the Colonel at the same time.

So they had to, he had to do two things at once.

Bust Colonel Kincaid and save the lady's daughter.

Like I said it was it was this this episode I

agree with you you don't really have time to

stop and Catch a breath before the action starts

again, and I like episodes like this Yeah, they're

just yeah Episodes that flow as well as trust

doesn't rust it and as well as inside out did

is just absolutely amazing Turning the scanners

off I don't have anything written down. I really,

really enjoyed this episode. There's not much

to say. I guess if you wanted to really make

a complaint is I would complain about the scene

where Dugan did get out and got back to the Colonel,

but the Colonel says, oh, I'd like to talk to

him because he says he's the real Dugan. I would

have liked to have seen maybe a minute or two

of their conversation. Because it goes from Dugan

is captured by the Colonel's guards, imprisoned,

and then the Colonel says, oh, I want to talk

to this man. He may not be lying or whatever

else. We never actually see him talk to him.

No, we don't. And then later on, we find out

that, oh, they know that Michael isn't who he

says he is. Right. That would be my really only

complaint about this one. That was the only complaint

I had, too. But what can you do for 30 minutes

of television? Well, no, I know. But I mean,

you know, there's like there's like, I don't

know. But it was it was still great. I mean,

but I see what you're saying, because you would

like to kind of find that twist. Like, OK, this

guy's not saying, you know, this guy says he

is Dugan, but he's really not. We know who we

know who he really is. You know, and this is

Dugan here. So who are you? Yeah. Yeah. All right,

michael really by now you should know me better

than that i admit that i was somewhat surprised

to discover that i was not in fact a prototype

vehicle but there you see you're upset it's gotta

be a little blow to your ego right Not at all.

being a problem -ridden prototype, I'm the new,
