Super Mario Bros. Super Show Episodes 13-16 Review
About this Episode
Hey, paisanos! It's the Super Mario Bros. Super
Show! To pixels in the animation. I am one of
your hosts to join Mike and joining me is TVs.
Mr. Nail You know Captain Lou would never sound
that you're flat No flats. No, he can be cheerful.
He just would never sound that flat Yeah, but
it's a me Mario. That's a that's a current generation
thing Was not the original 90s show so this is
a this is episode three As you find listeners
will be able to tell we are slowly Decreasing
the episodes per podcast and we just can't take
it Well, it's like the first two episodes episode
one Total running time was an hour and 32 minutes
and it was six episodes Yeah, we said a lot,
but we didn't you know I mean it's one of those
things where we did talk a lot and there are
you know I try to only get like 30 20 second
clips something like that. You know Something
small. I don't get like the whole show's audio.
There's no People can just buy the DVDs or find
it on Netflix if they actually want to watch
the show And it's one of those things where For
me, it's Technically it'd be including intro
and outro. It's 14 clips Well, probably double
that 24 clips to edit a whole podcast for this
show with six episodes because you got to have
six Increment audios you gotta it. It's a whole
whole rigmarole so From this point on we're gonna
be switching. I think between three and four
episodes per podcast and that'll take us through
episode 15 and then when we hit episode 16 we
head to Hyrule. Oh wow you're actually excited
about that? Well the Zelda cartoon is better
than the Mario cartoon. Yeah that's true. Except
for that frog episode. You know I saw that in
one of the Zelda reviews on one of the episodes
that we watched. for this episode. Oh God. No,
no, I'm a frog. You have to kiss me. I have a
bad sinus infection. Oh crap. All right. Um,
yeah. What I do love and I'll bring this up in
the episode that it happens, but I Love with
the set that we're gonna either talk about this
week or next week that they're finally they finally
started going more towards Mario Brothers Super
Mario Brothers villains. Yes, the Bezos are still
there Yes, the shy guys the albatross the all
that all the stuff from Mario 2 is still there
But in one of the episodes, again, I don't remember
if it's this week's podcast or next week's, they
finally put Goombas in the show. I was like,
hell yeah. Well, there was Goombas in the River
Race episode, but they were barely in it. Yeah,
if I would have... Seen them or if I would have
noticed them or if I would have you know, I would
have said it back then Oh my god, the goombas.
Yeah, you know, I don't even think I did. I don't
remember if I did or not So yeah, let's go ahead
and get to the episodes today Copper fittings.
Unidate. Is that what this is all about? What
a fail. Luxuriant body hair, bulging muscles,
can bench press 500 pounds. R .E .O., what kind
of a woman is this? Those are not her qualities,
those are mine. I copied them from a Rambo bubblegum
cart. Burns are on the bottom. Rambo bubblegum
cart. Out of this world girl with head in the
clouds loves to travel. My old Mario, this girl
sounds like a 747. Oh yeah, go ahead Luigi, make
fun of her. But when you see my date, boy will
you be jealous. Her name is Eatsy. First up today
is Toad Warrior. Oh no. Guess what movie this
is a rip off of. Yeah, oh No, it's not just a
ripoff of one movie. It's a ripoff of multiple
movies. Yeah It just is and it's Why does toad
need his own episode that Doesn't even give him
any character development whatsoever because
we just can't get enough of the squeak toy noise
on effect just that's just oh so so bad it's
just and it's not even a at this point it's more
like a baby rattle than it is to me then it is
an actual doggy squeak toy it just is so bad
so the live -action segment was EC the extra
creepy And it took me a minute, but the guest
who's playing EC is Claire Carey, who is the
daughter on coach. Oh, yeah. Yeah, that's right.
Other than that, not really noteworthy. Well,
actually, no, no, no. Actually, EC is actually
very noteworthy. Why is that? Because, well,
think about it. This is... September 25th 1989
Way before the internet or computer dating was
ever even thought of Like in in the mainstream
Okay, I would say like the the online dating
scene kind of took off maybe 97 98 Like it first
like bloomed then But no, this is that's You
know Mario had a computer day to you know, my
computer date is an alien Stepmom is nearly Years
before eHarmony. Oh Don't even get me started.
I I seriously doubt that guy's a doctor. I Really
really do So, uh, for Toad Warrior, or Toad Warriors,
Koopa's road gang has stolen all the spaghetti
sauce in Car Land. So Mario's group must work
to get it back. Episode is based on, obviously,
the road warrior. Featured song is Born to be
Wild by Steppenwolf. Oh, boy. the plot is just
I I will like I like this about the plot and
I'll mention it later, but I Do kind of like
the whole drag racing thing with toad and koopa.
I thought that was kind of cool and funny I like
how toad is always insulting koopa stupa koopa
koopa stupa I really do like that from toad and
and This will happen throughout this episode
today, and it will happen. I guarantee you next
week when we do episode four I'm really getting
sick of the whole food thing. I really am I Really
like food is a plot Biggest plot hole ever I
mean Okay, I get it you know back in the 80s
You know parents, you know told their kids what
you know, even nowadays parents tell their kids
would eat even on halftime They're just taking
the McDonald's but you know Back then obesity
and even now I'm not saying I'm a fat guy. I'm
a fat 30 33 year old man I don't I don't care
but I you know, I can talk about this when I
was a kid You saw ads of obese kids all over
the television everywhere And back then there
were no like nowadays McDonald's, Burger King,
Subway, I don't even know if Subway was, we didn't
have a Subway in Massachusetts, so I'm not sure,
I don't remember one. You know, all these fast
food chains were just fast food, unhealthy, burgers,
fries, shakes, that's what it was back then.
Whereas today, they're like, hey, have a happy
meal with apples and milk, you know? My whole
point here is, is this show, specifically the
Super Mario World Super Show, this cartoon segment,
every episode that we will talk about between
this podcast and next week, it always ends with
Mario wanting to eat. It does. Is this the one,
I hadn't watched this today, I watched this last
week, but is this the one where it ends with
him just taking a big mouthful of sauce? at the
end yes and it doesn't stop it's like flowing
into his mouth and it's not dripping out of the
ground at all i know i know and it's okay i i
get it you know and You can talk about this in
a second as well, but this also ties into the
fact of all these government jerks nowadays saying
video games are violent, video games are causing
children to be violent. This is the same kind
of thing with the whole food thing. Yes, parents
are responsible for their children. They're,
you know, for what their children do, eat, say,
whatever. But, I'm sorry, this show... Might
have contributed to someone become some young
child in 1989 becoming obese later in life because
the whole point of this cartoon specifically
I mean this episode, you know Food is good in
moderation. You know what I mean? It's like You
can never have, and I hate to be cliche here,
but you can never have too much of a good thing
all at once. You can't have two gallons of ice
cream in once, you know what I mean? It's one
of those things where, and I know it's fictional,
I get it, but kids of the 80s, we were impressionable,
damn it. I don't know about kids today, but I
was very impressionable. Granted, I'm not gonna
go out looking for a spaghetti sauce truck and,
you know, just put my mouth under the hose. You
know what I mean? But it's one of those things.
We saw it on television. We would want it right
then and there. We would want as much as Mario
was having. And I don't think that was a good
message at all. I just don't. Any thoughts on
the overall plot? Not really. Like I said, it's
been a week since I've seen it. This is the one
that I'm... fuzziest about on this episode, but
I Just I just remember that last shot of Mario
just sucking up the spaghetti sauce and I think
it's a comedy thing but Unlike unlike other shows
like Garfield. It's just it's just not funny.
It's because they keep going back. It's just
it's the same Joke every single episode and at
least at least with Garfield. They kind of change
up the lasagna thing. It's It's kind of like,
it's kind of like an undercurrent with the rest
of comedy where it's just overt and Mario is
always eating. Well, it's Mario is always eating
and Mario is always eating quote unquote Italian
food. You know what I mean? It's like, is there
Italian plumbers from Brooklyn? We get it. This
cartoon is going to contribute to some kid becoming
a fat plumber. A fat plumber that can't dig his
way out of a hole. That'll come up later. Alright,
let's see if we can find any fire flowers to
be powered up with. Car 54 and a half calling
King Koopa. I've arrested the princess and her
faucet street friends. Lock them up and throw
away the key. And whatever you do, don't let
them get away. The last of the spaghetti sauce
is almost in my hands. I'll make a fortune selling
it back to those miserable mushrooms. And now
I've got that pesky princess too! So, some fire
flowers. Did you find anything you liked about
this episode? I like that it paid homage to The
Road Warrior to a certain extent. I mean, of
course. Koopa was the ayatollah of rock n' roll
and they had the gyrocopter pilot in there of
course. Other than that, not really. It was a
toad -centric episode which meant that it was
going to be annoying. In fact, I should save
that complaint for the next. Yes, you should.
We get to the goombas. Ah, a mushroom rebel chopper.
Is it just me or is this episode supposed to
be like Empire? This is Star Wars meets Road
Warrior, honestly. The whole point was Rebel
base, Rebel this, Rebel that, and I'm thinking,
yeah, hello Empire Strikes Back. To a certain
extent. To a certain extent. I didn't enjoy the
Koopa Trooper diving under his car. That was
funny. I did enjoy that. I thought that was cool.
Want to drag King of the Road Koopa? Like I said
before, I did enjoy that. I thought that was
pretty cool. However, when we get to the Goomba
stomping, I will have a huge problem with how
Toad got his motorcycle powers. God. Oh yeah,
this is... Oh yeah. I'll save my complaint here.
Yeah, alright, let's get to the Goomba Stomping.
Yay! A Mushroom Rubble Chopper! So let's stomp
on some Goombas. The Toad Warrior is created
from the Star Man. Yeah, this is the beginning
of the thousand and one ways that the Mario and
company get power ups and it always results in
the same basic thing. Oh, except... Not in this
episode, because they take a star man and he
becomes the road warrior, basically. Right, but
like... Okay, the fire flower is the same as
in the game. Obviously, we don't have mushrooms
because, you know, drug resistance, education,
all that stuff in the 80s, drug abuse resistance.
Yeah, I dare. There you go. I dare to be stupid.
But it's one of those things where, how can they
not find a way to properly animate, colorize,
and show what the Starman is supposed to do,
specifically with Mario, not necessarily with
the Toad Warrior, but with Mario. Every time
he gets a Starman to this point in the series,
and it happens after this, When he touches it,
they show him multicolored for a half a second.
And then he just turns into, he just stays like,
he still has the star power, that's the thing.
He still has the star power and he says, oh,
I'm Super Mario. And it makes no sense. Believe
it or not, I can kind of understand why they
wouldn't do that in this cartoon just because
they're still using cell animation. And that
would be a tough thing to coordinate. getting
him to move and swapping the colors back and
forth like he does in the game. So I think that's
the reason why they kind of made it so that the
star man and the fire flower do the same thing
in the show. Plus it would be silly if he had
a power up where he just walked around and touched
people and made them die. That would be hard
to work into the stories. Unless you gave him
a black hood and a meat cleaver. Although I do
I do like what happens when toad D powers in
this episode The power wears off and he's on
a tricycle Yeah, that's toad on a trike oh god
The only other thing I had is as all this battling
and road warrioring is going on Why does Luigi
have X'd out Koopa Troopa stickers to put on
his plane every time he takes one out? Like,
do they have time? Hey, before this battle, let's
make stickers for the plane! I know it's a nitpick
on my part, but that was just like... It's a
reference to something. I don't exactly remember
what, but it might even be the roadmap. Yeah,
it might be road warrior, but it also like to
me It's more so referencing like the Looney Tunes
stuff like it like the episodes were Tweety's
like I lose more Sylvester's that way Yeah, I
lose more buddy that's that way I don't know
Overall I I did enjoy but at the same time. I
didn't enjoy this episode um it was okay i'll
say that it was middle of the road for me at
least any other thoughts i don't think so all
right we're gonna move on to the next episode
plumber's log number 295 the ancient city of
mythos we were looking for an old paisano of
toads whose name was they even built a statue
to him with one hand tied behind his back he
can beat king koopa and all of his bad guys look
behind us up next is the fire of hercu fleas
okay all right so this one was Mario and Luigi
retain an out -of -shape here reach retrain an
out -of -shape hero so that he can reclaim the
stone great balls of fire I so have to put that
song in this episode now from KUVA featured song
obviously Jerry Lee Lewis great balls of fire
which is not on the DVD obviously Sucks. And
then the live -action segment was the Mario's
Fight Back. David Horowitz interviews the Mario
Brothers on worldwide television after they claim
their Mario Brothers clog cleaner can dissolve
any clog in three minutes or less, but the result
is a disaster. Oh man, the live -action segment.
I swear that sink was gonna explode. Like but
before they know before they knocked him out.
I swear that sink was gonna explode And then
at the end of plant monster comes out of it Is
they use plant food? Well, I think it was like
a hairball or something. It was in the drain
and it made the air ball grow. Oh Yeah, okay.
I see I see but they did use plant food. Yeah.
Yeah Cartoon logic. Yeah Miracle grow. Yeah exactly
cartoon launching a monster grow I love I love
that the live -action segments have a running
gag or whenever something goes wrong The Mario
brothers just look at each other go. Oh, oh Yeah
It's um It's you know what the two of them. I
hate to say this and it's so far before this
happens, but When they did the uh -oh in this
scene it was so reminded me of Well, we've already
had one Power Rangers reference in this episode
reminds me of the ooze men in the Mighty Morphin
Power Rangers the movie the full -on film in
1995 because in the beginning scene of that film
That the Rangers are fighting the ooze men from
Ivan Ooze, and there's one where Adam and Rocky,
two of the characters, two of the Rangers, are
like, double whammy? Double whammy! And you see
the Ooze man just look at the camera and go,
uh -oh! They kick him in both sides of his head
and his eyes pop out of his head. Oh, jeez. Go
ahead. Whenever Mari and Luigi do that uh -oh
thing, the next thing that comes out of my mouth
is SpaghettiOs. Again, it's the food thing. Oh,
it's the food. Too much food. Oh yeah, canned
pasta. Yeah. Alright, so the uh... The animated
one hmm I Probably wrong with this, but I swear
I heard the rocky theme It was sort of the rocky
theme because they were they were totally homaging
the movie where he's running up the stairs Yeah,
and they it starts with the rocky theme and then
it kind of goes off in a different direction
because I think There's a licensing problem with
that Yeah, so It's it's it's a sound alike and
I love that throughout the entire training homage
It basically takes place in like the span of
an afternoon Yeah Because what what else could
Koopa be doing if it took if they did that in
real time It's like he could have taken over
the Mushroom Kingdom by now. So it clearly is
only this was like 40 minutes of time. It took
him to go from fab flab to fab Yeah Yeah, I don't
know who the voice actor was for her gif leaves
I Think it was the same guy who does the voice
of Cooper. It sounds it sounds like very very
He sounds much more toned down it's like hey
guys, you know, he sounds very Yeah. Lethargic.
I love how the Bezos just show up and take the
great balls of fire. He's like, hey, stop. He's
totally ineffective. They can't really stop anyone
from taking them. It's a wonder that he managed
to protect them for that long. Yeah. I know.
And it's one of those things, though, where...
What I don't like about it is you have that really
tame voice of all guys I can't do it. I am no
hero I'm too fat and when he gets buffed up and
back in shape, it's it's deeper It's not the
Koopa voice, but it's a it's a deeper version
of that tone down voice and I just don't like
the voice change I just didn't care for it at
all. So let's go ahead and get to the fire flowers
after this. Alright, we are up to the fire flowers
here for the herculean episode Trash -talking
Bezos the only time I've enjoyed the Bezos to
this point when they're trash -talking I thought
that was funny as hell And as I already mentioned
the altered rocky theme when they're getting
the hero back in shape what What other things
did you like about this one? And you can't say
that it ended, because you've said that every
single... Yeah, I've said that joke already this
episode. Let's see... I don't know if this really
counts as a like, but it's just... It's another
episode where they take... They take a myth or
a pre -existing story and adapt it into a Mario
cartoon. It's not terrible. It's one of the better
ones. It's at least funny in spots. It's not
like the magic carpet one or the love potion
one. It's actually sort of good. What I really
enjoyed was, hey, let's be statues, and Mouse
are not noticing. Like, how can you not notice
that? Especially once the stink hit Luigi's nose.
Like, was Mouse so far away by that point that
he didn't even turn around to see them? That's
silly. Alright, let's go stomp on some Goombas.
King Koopa was right. You're not a hero. You're
a zero! All right, it's Goomba Stomping time.
When you have a... Is it this one? Yeah. During
the Super Toad sequence, when you have music
during a fight sequence, it should not be ballroom
dancing music. That's the replacement for the
Great Falls of Fire song that was originally...
I know, but they could have gotten non -contractual,
you know what I mean? They could have gotten
a non -licensed fast -paced song instead of,
hey, let's go dancing. Yeah, that was totally
weird. I remember thinking that this is totally
out of place. And I read that the replacement
music was taken from the... mario 3 and mario
world cartoon so i'll have to remember that when
we get to those yeah i mean at least with mega
move at least with that replacing most of the
stuff in mario 3 for the dvds and and and the
media stuff since it's not since you can't they
couldn't use it at least they used mega move
every time and at least mega move has it's upbeat
it's not this slow drowned out dance music um
the other one was um as i said before and then
it happens here does mario really have to reference
food all the time in the ending of every episode
yes there's some of your uh dislikes for this
one oh let's see um the the jar of fireballs
i mean it It was like the big, big guffin of
the episode and what ends up happening is Koopa
drains the jar and it's like, oh no, the fireballs
are gone forever. And Toad, who got firepower
in this episode, shoots a fireball into the jar
and it reignites it. I'm like, well, if that's
how it took, then what was so special about the
jar of fireballs in the first place? Yeah, that
was a little strange. Hmm the fact that it was
another toad sort of toad centric episode because
he ends up being the hero at the end and Let's
see the just you wait next week just you wait
Oh God See I'm trying to think if there was something
else about this episode that I didn't like You
know, I can't think of anything but like I said
the the Fat the hat the fat Herc you please and
how he's like a total fat so loser at the beginning
of the story like hey guys I'm protecting the
great balls of fire Come on Be serious. All right,
we are gonna move on to the next episode Go ahead.
Let me see you do it You asked for it, Mr. Tough
Guy. You sure? Yeah. You in what army? Go ahead.
You in what army? I shall show you what army.
Be scared. You ready? Mushy, wooshy. Moose, moose,
moose. Mario will now love us. Okay, good for
you, Luigi. You ready to sprint? Now make the
reinvent. Uh -oh. What do you mean, uh -oh? oh
i tell the truth mario i never bothered to learn
how to make things uh come back up next and yeah
up next is uh count cupula oh boy uh mario's
group enters a castle in avania we will get to
that what actualvania it is later uh... where
kupa and his minions are all monsters obviously
the episode is based on count dracula featured
song i wish shot factory was the richest dvd
-producing company in the friggin world so they
could have bought the rights to this music featured
song with mike and i guess is it is it monster
mash no no Featured song was Michael Jackson's
thriller. Oh my god In the live -action segment
Magician Harry Blackstone jr. Visits Luigi Magical
Luigi, how does he make things reappear? I love
the canned the canned applause when Harry Blackstone
jr. Shows up. Yeah There's a very bad edit to
get him to appear in the episode. Oh Yeah, that's
yeah, that's right. That's oh man. Oh This episode
oh boy So yeah Spaghetti drinking vampires Neil.
Yeah, basically Mario and company are Going through
the Transylvania esque countryside looking for
a place to stay and they stumble upon a Vampires
castle, you know, I think I've seen this episode
of Bugs Bunny before Transylvania six five thousand.
Yes Or sixty five hundred or whatever. I I think
it is six dash five thousand. So yeah The only
thing missing from this episode was the bird
with two heads Oh, um... Agatha? Is he from around
here? Abraca Pocas! Newport News. I can do better
than that. Walla Walla Washington. Oh, girls!
Uh, if only we were watching those cartoons.
Oh, yeah. Yeah, the plot here is kind of we've
seen it before in every other incarnation It's
you know, like you said before in the in the
podcast They just find stories to throw Mario's
characters into it It was all right was I don't
know let's go ahead and see if we can find some
fire flowers We were traveling through a strange
land called Turtlevanie. Somebody had pulled
a plug on that big bathtub in the sky. And we
were soaked! Oh, I'm freezing. When are we gonna
find a place to sleep? Never fear, Princess.
There's bound to be a motel around here somewhere.
Those pesky plumbers are playing right into my
bangs. Yes, Count Kupula. Prepare rooms for Princess
Toadstool and her foolish friends. Same old problem.
I just can't sleep in a strange bed no matter
how nice the place is. Hey, that's what I need.
Something to read. Magic wands and phrases. Sounds
interesting. Yeah. Magic can be performed either
by potions or by the use of magic words and phrases.
Among the most powerful of these is the word
ab -abacadabra. Oh, sure it is. Sick humor. It
is to laugh. Magic words, cully. What big mosquitoes
they do have around here. Hold still, you little
devil. There! Another highly useful magic white
is Hocus Pocus. Anyone we know, Agatha? No. Splendid
looking specimen, though. Boy, I hope the restaurant's
still open. I haven't eaten since I left Coot
Kamunga. Another one? They ought to screen this
place. And I'm higher. Hocus -Cadabra. Newport
News. Wow, I can do better than that. Walla Walla
Washington. Alright, so let's find some fire
flowers here in the good segment. Turtlevania?
Are there any Teenage Mutant Ninjas there? Oh
boy. Yeah, I... That's all I have for fire flowers
I'll say that the episode was animated actually
well I was a little surprised Especially in regard
to the shading. I mean there was actual shading
effects going on which added to the atmosphere
of the episode So that was good. Yeah Yeah, the
cast was animated a little better this time Unfortunately,
this is a rarity for this show so The very next
episode that's out the window. Wow, I can't really
think of much else. There was a really bad joke.
It was like, oh yeah, they were torturing Mario
and they were doing like the water torture on
him. He's like, oh, I hate leaking pipes. Call
me a plumber. And Mouser walks in. He's like,
you're a plumber. And insert, insert. rimshot
here yeah that wasn't very good wasn't very good
what I do like I will say now that I'm thinking
about the episode again what I do like about
it is that Luigi is a believer in Mario is not
oh I believe you do let's go oh wait no sequel
damn But yeah, no I do like that That Mario does
eventually come around and Luigi's like I told
you so Mario All right, let's go ahead and get
to the Goombas So stomping on some Goombas what's
a goon pie i have no idea holy crap oh god why
is it every time i hear luigi say leap in lasagna
first thing that i think of is leak in lubricants
well he usually says uh holy ravioli i should
have had a counter at the very beginning of this
you know to see how many times we said that but
yeah okay so vampires and werewolves team koopa
team mario zombies too this is just one big episode
of everything i don't care for now in the old
days when i first saw this i love this episode
when i was a kid nowadays after the i get after
that stupid team film series of ooh this team
or oh that team or this guy's hotter than that
vampires sparkle yay no after that and then they
incorporated werewolves and all this whole fucking
zombie movement of everybody loving I don't care
for the walking dead I don't care for zombies
I'm not a horror guy at all I'm just not whatsoever
but I'm so sick of it basically being everywhere
I go in pop culture everybody's talking about
the walking dead or everybody's talking about
the next zombie movie everybody's pretending
that they're getting ready for a fucking zombie
apocalypse. The only thing that's going to destroy
this world besides us and our polluting the environment
is if another fucking asteroid or meteor hits
this planet and, you know, basically we go boom
like the dinosaurs did. There's not going to
be any fucking zombie apocalypse. Holy fucking
crap. Yeah, but at least that was feasible, you
know Versus hey, it's a zombie apocalypse. Anyway,
what didn't you like about Count Koopla? Let's
see these snippet spiders throw on That was just
a big WTF. I was like snippet spiders Yeah Were
they in the game? No. Yeah, but For some reason
they had giant spiders with sniffit masks on,
and I'm like, what the? What? You know, just
total aside, you mentioned Goompa earlier. Another
case where I have to put my nerd cap on, there
was a character named Goompa in Paper Mario.
And he was the father of a younger Goomba. But
anyway, back to - Oh my god. Yes. But anyway
back to back to the episode Let's see Yeah, the
the where Koopa's that was kind of silly it was
Some of this was like a real stretch like they
had zombie goombas But you know that you're you
really can't have zombies as they're presented
the movies So they were just like, oh no zombie
goombas and they didn't look like zombies at
all. They just kind of look like dumb goombas
Yeah, they didn't look like zombies and because
it is a kid's cartoon. Yeah, you can't have any
sort of Eating blood or drinking blood or anything
so they were so it's you know drinking spaghetti
sauce Yeah, and princess totes toadstool is like
I hate spaghetti sauce, and I'm like oh well
Not gonna get along with Mario after all are
you? Was this the episode where? Cupula said
oh, we're gonna make you join our Lovely club
of gentlemen or what and I didn't say gentlemen,
but like I think it was and she's like, but I'm
a girl I'm a girl. Oh God I Know a lot of the
listeners are gonna be saying you guys are reading
too much into it. It's just a cartoon. Have fun
with it We're here to analyze both the good and
the bad. I want to remind everybody about that
Oh another analytical note. This is another episode
where the the fire piranha plant from Super Mario
3 shows up for some reason. Yeah, that was a
little strange as well. Another thing, again,
I don't know if it's this week. I think it's,
yeah, it'll be next week's episode, episode four,
where another thing from Mario 3 shows up. The
Wand of Wakung. Oh, that's right. Yeah, we'll
get to that next week. But, you know, I'm I don't
know if like if I wasn't like if I wasn't doing
this for I guess quote -unquote work Like if
I wasn't sitting here grabbing audio files writing
down notes. I honestly don't know if I could
watch this the show like from episode to episode
and Enjoy it nowadays as a kid. I loved it. I
thought it was great because as I said before
It was the video game come to life, for the most
part. Yes, not everything is correct, not everything,
you know, as we've already stated in the past
two, you know, two or three episodes, you know,
you can't get an exact interpretation in animation,
but I don't know. It just... it's some of the
situation some of these plots some of the and
they're so cliche nowadays it's like as soon
as you see this is your as sometimes there's
moments look like i said with uh... with the
last of the so we talked about where i recognized
they kept mentioning rebels rebels this rebel
this rebel alliance like most hours and i kinda
get a chuckle of that and then there's stuff
like toad warrior turns into A tri - You know
what would've been cooler instead of a tricycle?
What would've made that moment cool was if...
If it turned into a big wheel. I was just thinking
that. Anyways, alright, I think we're gonna move
on to the next episode where we hit the high
seas. Yar! And lastly up today we have Pirates
of the Koopa and In the live -action segment,
it's do you believe in magic? wait two magical
episodes in But it's not really magical. Yeah,
I know in the live -action segment Lo and behold
one of the greatest basketball players of all
time shows up magic Johnson Asks Luigi to repair
one of his trophies and Magic Johnson is almost
literally phoning this one in Because he's not
on the set for this he's he's uh Composited into
into the mirror. Yeah Yeah, yeah, I thought it
was cool to kind of see him there. I thought
it was interesting It would have been cool if
he was actually on set with them but You know
Back then, the dude was busy. Yes. No. You know,
1989, the Lakers and magic and all that. Yeah,
no, that wouldn't work. In the animation, Koopa
kidnaps the princess on the high seas so that
he can auction her off. Mario, Luigi, and Toad
must pose as pirates to rescue her. Episode is
based on the Pirates of Penzance. Featured song
is limbo rock by chubby checker. Oh boy. Yeah,
I'm glad that got cut Yeah, Koopa captures the
princess and tries to sell her off as the pirates
booty but um Oh I will say I much prefer a pirate's
episode than I do a vampire werewolf zombie episode.
It was fun, it was interesting. And even though
we're only three episodes into this podcast,
we can already tell you folks, and Neil, you've
said this before, these episodes were just like
basically write it. Stamp of approval done rinse
repeat, you know You know and and these cartoons
specifically the cartoon segments. They're only
11 minutes maybe maybe less than that, you know,
so it's not like It's not like where you have
something like g1 or g1 was 22 minutes Without
commercials 30 minutes with commercials and it's
not like you could tell a whole story with that
and they do their best I don't know, I like this
one. What did you think of the overall plot for
Pirates of the Koopa? It wasn't bad. It was...
I got to say that it's kind of weird how every
single episode seems to stand on its own because
no matter where they go, Koopa has an alter ego
and it seems like he's always been there. They
show up in this Pirates world and there's already
a legend of Blackbeard Koopa and how he's like...
the most feared scourge of the 70s. And it's
like, well, if they've been following Koopa around
the world, then he hasn't been here all that
long. So I always find that amusing how Koopa
is established no matter where they go. And for
some reason, he's always established by his alter
ego. Like on the last episode, he was a vampire
for some reason. This was a very... not a strange
episode, but it had its moments. When we get
to the good stuff, I'll recite one of the jokes
that I thought was funny in this episode. Alright,
well let's get there now. What kind of fire flowers
have you found for Pirates of the Koopa, Neil?
Well, I'm just going to point out this one joke
that I thought was great. Mario and Luigi are
disguised as pirates to get into Koopa's auction
and they walk in and Mario says to Luigi, now
Luigi. act tough and they go sit at the bar and
Luigi goes, I'll have a glass of milk, please.
It's an old joke, but it never it never fails
to make me laugh. Yeah. Why am I envisioning
Luigi in a 80s vest and a multicolored hat driving
a DeLorean? Milk, son. Is there no milk around
here? You want milk? Go get a cow. Also, kind
of like that, in spite of the fact that he was
called Blackbeard Koopa. Koopa does not have
a beard. Yeah. It was just like, they called
him that because it was the theme of the episode,
not because he had that characteristic. Yeah,
yeah not at all Actually the princess cliche,
but I thought it was fun. I did I really did
like this episode I thought it was a fun episode
to watch And of course as soon as you know we
tried look we looked it up this episode aired
a week too late for Our national pirate talk
like but don't talk like a pirate day. Yeah That's
too bad. That was a golden opportunity missed.
Although I don't think that actually existed
at the time. No, that was an invention of the
internet. Yes. So let's get to stomping some
goombas. Getting into what's sucked about this
episode. Honestly, I only have one thing That
was the lamest Super Mario speech ever and why
isn't Mario? I mentioned this before why isn't
Mario? multicolored like the games depict and
obviously the animation back then wouldn't allow
it but But seriously that was the worst you're
referring to star band star bright Yeah, yeah,
unfortunately you'll be hearing that again. Oh
I know it The only thing I got is there were
some animation mistakes regarding Super Mario
It's like they they came back from a cutaway
and it was back to being regular Mario But then
another cut and he was Super Mario again And
then the power wore off like immediately after
that so it was like It was a mistake compounded
by the fact that they took the power away immediately
after it The power -ups are so better. They're
much better done in Mario 3. Yeah, well there
was more of them No, but I mean like like if
like if If a petui either spits at Mario or if
one of the plants grabs his tail Yes, his tail
disappears, but he'll fall to the ground whereas
here Whether it's white and red overalls or or
a red shirt and white overalls or a red shirt
and blue overalls It's like hey doesn't matter.
It's all interchangeable colors It's kind of
like in this scene Optimus Prime will be all
blue and then in the next scene you won't see
his trailer poof gone It's one of those classic
80s animation errors Alright, we're going to
take a quick break. You're going to hear a couple
of ads and we're going to come back with our
ratings for these episodes and we'll close the
show after this. Is this thing on? Oh goody!

One to four zero to five star man. What do you
give that one Neil? I give it a one Yeah, I'm
gonna give it a two. I liked it a little bit
There's a few jumps in logic that you'd have
to make and a few like suspension of disbelief
moments, but it's not It's not it's not any worse
than what we've already covered to this point
the fire of Hercules I'll give it a two, I suppose.
Yeah, I'm right there with you. I think for me,
what makes it not get a three or more is the
constant food referencing. It's just, no. Count
Cupula. I'll give it a three. I think the animation
deserves a little credit. Yeah, the animation
was spot -on and I'm also gonna give it a three
I Like I said, I only had one complaint about
it and that's pretty much it, you know, it's
it's my whole anti werewolf zombie vampire thing
of today more than back then and Yeah, I can
agree with a three out of five stars for that
one Pirates of Koopa I'll probably give this
one a three as well. It was one of the better
episodes for sure I'm gonna give it a four. I
really enjoyed it overall. I thought it was great
It's not like a perfect episode, but at the same
time it's it's almost there. So Alright, what
do you guys get going on over at the aficionados?
