Introduction to Video Game Cartoon Reviews
About this Episode
Alright ladies and gentlemen before we get into
pixels in the animation Just want to let everyone
know I am pulling a WWE move and we are releasing
episode zero here one year before the podcast
starts so June 21st 2013 as I say in the show
upcoming is When the actual podcast will start.
I don't know I plan ahead and I like to release
episode zeros early so there you go now on with
the show hey paisanos it's the super mario brothers
super show left the Mushroom Kingdom, and then
his Doomship attacked. King Koopa was back with
the greatest danger ever known, his Koopa Kits.
Using their new superpowers, the Super Mario
Brothers rescued Princess Toadstool and beat
back the evil Koopa family. Super Mario Super
Mario World Super Mario World Hello and welcome
to episode 0 of Pixels in the Animation. I am
one of your hosts, DODO and Mike, and joining
me for the first, well not the first time, but
it's the first time that he essentially has his
own show on the Geekcast Radio Network is...
TV's Mr. Neil. That's right. TV's Mr. Neil is
now... You know, joined up with GCRN as far as
doing this show. And what this show is is the
next review series podcast for the Geekcast Radio
Network. We're going to be reviewing every episode
of tons of video game based cartoons. What have
I gotten myself into? essentially I came up with
the idea for this show because it actually it
all goes back to tooncast episode tooncast classic
episode 1 when we did an all -around mashup discussion
of all of the Nintendo cartoons Super Mario Brothers
Super Show Zelda Captain and Super Mario 3 Super
Mario World all that stuff and since then, oh
god, that was three years ago now. Three years
later, I was looking at a person's web show online,
Pixel Dan. I usually watch his Masters of the
Universe classics toy reviews, seeing as how
he's pretty much the only one that does them.
But he has a show called From Pixels to Plastic,
where he essentially reviews or takes a look
at any you know Mario based merchandise or Mega
Man based merchandise or any kind of video game
toy essentially you know action figure whatever
and I looked at the title from pixels to plastic
and I'm thinking okay obviously I'm not gonna
steal the guy's title but I need to figure out
something that is unique something that is you
know gonna grab a listener's attention and There's
pixels in the animation. Sadly, the acronym for
it is PETA, which we have nothing to do. Oh,
no. Well, I promised to eat a burger on each
episode. Oh, that's funny. That is so funny.
So yeah, I brought this idea up to Neil because
I know Neil loves classic games. i know he dreads
horrible horrible animation it is what my skating
humorous commentary it's better than all what
i love is but all that animation sucks and all
there's too much red in that spider -man it's
bleeding through a bubble anyways Let's not go
there. So in this introduction, episode zero,
what we're gonna go through is we're gonna explain
to you, fun people, the listeners, of what the
podcast won't be, what it will be, and then how
you can send in your feedback, and essentially
what we're gonna be covering. I managed to find
nine video game cartoons. That will span us from
episode 1 to episode 99 Episode 0 obviously here
is the introduction of an episode 100 will be
the grand finale of the podcast Yes, I am a big
thinker. Oh Boy So what the podcast won't be
we will not be covering Every single video game
cartoon that was ever made There's I think I
would hang myself we did the Street Fighter cartoon
That's so funny Neil was here Was forced to watch
Darkstalkers Was forced to watch Mortal Kombat
defend realm I don't know how Clancy Brown attached
himself to that project. Go from playing a really
shitty Raiden to one of the best Luthor voices
ever. He tries to keep it under wraps. Yes, exactly.
So yeah, so that's what the podcast won't be.
What it will be is it will be a in -depth analytical
look. at every single episode of nine different
video game cartoons. The whole point of us reviewing
stuff here at Geekcast Review Network is that
even though we love, well, some of us might love
the stuff as far as nostalgia, as far as growing
up with it, as far as liking what we saw as kids,
this is going to be a look at, in my case, because
I have no idea how old you are, I'm 32 years
old. So this is going to be from a 32 -year -old's
perspective. and just see if any of these shows
stack up. Do you have any thoughts on what the
show will, what the podcast will be? Well, we
keep saying nine cartoons, but three of them
are Mario. Yeah, but it's still separate. I know.
And oh my God. See, my sister's youngest child
recently discovered the Super Mario Super Show.
And she can't stand it. She's like, how many
episodes of this are there? I'm like, oh, 52.
And then I was like, oh, wait, there's more.
There's a Super Mario 3 cartoon and Super Mario
World. Well, I think that they get better with
me. Well, OK, well, from Super Show to Super
Mario 3, for me, it got a little bit better.
I suppose it did. Because Super Mario 3 is easily
one of the best, if not the best, Super Nintendo,
or not, Nintendo classic cartridges ever. I love
that game. That game is so awesome. That is a
fantastic game. Yes. So, the nine cartoons that
we will be covering, as Neil said earlier, in
this order, Super Mario Bros. Super Show, The
Legend of Zelda, God, kill me now. Megahe! Captain
and the Game Master. God, kill me now. The Adventures
of Super Mario Bros. 3. The New Super Mario World.
Mega Man. The 1995 Mega Man series. Donkey Kong
Country, which... I don't even know if there
are torrents of that, because a lot of people
didn't even... I mentioned to one of my buddies
that loves classic cartoons. He's like, they
never made a Donkey Kong Country cartoon. I said,
dude, watch. I said, dude, watch. I went to YouTube.
The only thing I could find was the shittiest
quality. It was like the worst quality ever.
Like, even against YouTube standards, it was
the worst fucking quality ever of the Donkey
Kong Country intro. And I was like, here, look.
He's like, Oh my God, no, they didn't. It was
probably like a low bit rip off of someone's
extended play VHS. Yeah. Yeah. Um, uh, Sonic
the Hedgehog sat AM whatever. I just call it
Sonic the Hedgehog. I don't do all that Canadian
sat AM bullshit. Cause that's where I always
hear sat AM from is from a lot of my Canadian
friends. And it's like, it's sonic the hedgehog
that's what it is who gives a shit if it air
on saturday mornings damage we also hear them
saying mario and mario mary daisy it and the
final one uh... which is the better of the two
sonics in my opinion is uh... adventures of something
that's hard uh... sold nine nine cartoons makes
up one podcast I guess you could kind of consider
it's kind of an insult to Donkey Kong but you
could kind of consider Donkey Kong Country to
be our Teen Titans because even though Teen Titans
actually has DVD releases I'm betting it's gonna
be damn hard for us to track down decent Donkey
Kong quality episodes because I don't think that
thing ever got released on DVD and I If I remember
correctly, that cartoon was a pile. Yeah. Oh,
yes. Yes, it was. So, yeah, I mean, it's going
to be a fun ride. It's going to be very interesting.
Neil and I are probably going to do a pre -recorded
schedule where we record maybe two or three episodes
of the podcast per night or per week. or however
we decide to do it but it will be a pre -recorded
show so say we release episode one and you send
in feedback the feedback might not get read on
air until episode four or five just depending
because that's that's just the way that i like
doing things at this point in time because i
like actually being ahead instead of having to
worry about oh i have to record this show this
show this show in the show this week you know
So so yeah as far as the listener feedback you
can Follow at geek cast radio on Twitter. You
can go over to our Facebook fan page Facebook
.com slash geek cast radio network That's how
you can interact with us and all that stuff and
I'll give more about that later Let's just give
some overall General memories or thoughts about
some of these cartoons Never really outside of
the Nicole Eggert and the sergeant slaughter
clips I hardly ever cared for the live -action
parts of SMB Super Show No, that was that was
clearly the part of the show where you're supposed
to get up and make some microwave pizza rolls
Yeah The cartoon itself When I went back and
I not not recently but I went back a few months
ago and I caught some of the episodes on Netflix
It's more Super Mario 2 the American version
Than anything else. Yeah, it is because Super
Mario 2 had just come out at that point. Yeah,
and They that was the one they wanted to push
but the villain from that game is nowhere in
this cartoon So, you will never see Wart in this
cartoon. It's always Bowser. Well, and I think
the reason why it's Bowser in the cartoon is
because what kid is gonna know who Wart is? Yeah,
and he kind of looked like Bowser anyway, a little
bit. So they kind of made an amalgam of the two.
I'm hoping one of the listeners will do this
once we start this part of the podcast But I'm
betting we're going to need an excuse me princess
count. Oh God, oh my god That just As much as
I could care less for kitty link nowadays in
some of the games where he looks super anime
ish and looks like a little kid The Excuse Me
Princess line got so old so fast. That's one
thing I like about these old cartoons is they
had such a weird interpretation of all these
shows. They had NES graphics to work with and
whatever off -the -boat translation they came
up with. They had to make stuff up on their own.
And that's why, you know, Link was... Link in
this cartoon is nothing like Link that you think
of today. No, not at all. He's quite gabby and
he's after some sweet sweet Zelda. And you can
blame him because this is one of my favorite
Zeldas in terms of character design. Yeah. I
mean, hell, doppelganger, he almost got some.
Oh, yeah, the doppelganger is even better. thigh
-high boots? Was like like Monday. I was really
Monday. I was ready for another episode as I'm
like where's Zelda what the hell? What's going
on? And then I you know I finally realized you
know TV listings and and everything else is that
oh crap you know oh Boy it just I don't know
What I do like about the Zelda cartoon And what
I like about all these cartoons is how the muse
well for part of we can't count Adventures of
Super Mario Bros. 3 as far as music because outside
of the classic effects the music for that at
least for DVD was changed and all that crap,
but What I love about all of these cartoons is
that for me, they bring the games to life, regardless
of how many cliched things are in them, how many,
you know, oh my god, we want to rip our hair
out. The sound effects and all that stuff just
brought the games to life for me. Like, you watch
the Zelda cartoon. You hear the sword effect
or the the enemy dying effect or or whatever
you? Immediately think of the games well those
sound effects were taken right off of the games
right They had that they had an NES plug right
into the mixer When it comes to captain in the
game master outside of the horrible incarnations
of megaman and kid echarus um... and look at
me i'm simon belmont i'm i'm such a challenged
i like simon belmont as a fop because of what?
as a fop he's kind of prissy and vain it's hilarious
The one thing I loved about Captain N is the
same thing as I just said I love about all these
cartoons is Captain N actually took a teenager
into the game like we always say that we want
to be in some of these video games that we love.
Like I know you would love to be a little animal
that was rescued by Knuckles. Oh yeah because
that's what I'm dreaming of. Well, but you know
what I mean is you know it's like we would always
love to be in these games And I think Captain
and did that with bringing in a teen from the
real world digitizing him essentially pixelating
him And you have all these different Nintendo
references. I love the fact that they reference
Tetris twice The mirror world episode was good
although the The Tetris references in this show
is not nearly as funny as the fake movie poster
that you can find online of the Tetris movie,
which is just blocks raining down from the sky
and people running in terror. Have you seen that
college humor video, Tetris God? No. You haven't?
No, I haven't. I need to. I'll have to get that
for you later. Oh my God. You'll have to remind
me. It's amazingly hilarious. What was the other
one? Oh, the Potion of Power. I love that episode
in that series because we really got no conclusion.
These shows were in the middle of cartoons in
the 80s going from being singular storylines
with very little continuity to stuff that came
later in the 90s and 2000s that is nothing but
continuity. So these... a lot of these cartoons
at least for the nintendo ones are you know kinda
like in the middle of the zelda cartoon we never
really got any continuity with it we never really
got it like a definitive ending we know ganon's
gonna get out eventually although they did kinda
give us an ending in captain at they kinda did
yeah and and and but but that's what i liked
about it was because it was like oh hey this
is kinda cool uh... Now moving on to Adventures
of Super Mario Brothers 3. Well, one last thing
is, what's neat about Captain N is that it's
this weird time capsule of what video games were
in 1990. And it's so weird to see an episode
based on Final Fantasy that was made before the
game really took off. It's just this weird throwaway
episode that would have gotten more attention
had they knew what they had. Right, yeah. Yeah,
they just didn't know what they had did they
oh boy But yeah, no, I mean it was just it was
just amazing and of course they're Sadly, there
are a lot of episodes of Captain N that suck.
I know that but just season 3 That's one thing
I never understood. Like, I love Shout Factory,
because Shout Factory did release all of the
Nintendo cartoon stuff on DVD. And I never really
asked Brian Ward about this, but like, Captain
and the Game Master, the DVD set, says the complete
series. And then later you get Captain N and
the Near Super Mario World. And I guess maybe
it was because that... Guess season three and
the Super Mario World show was aired back -to
-back. So maybe that's why they had to do it
that way, but Maybe yeah, I don't know Season
three of Captain and I'm gonna have to go back
and watch that eventually obviously for this
podcast But I mean we complain on animation fish
not as well shows take a dive in animation quality
You will notice immediately that something is
wrong. Yeah. But Adventures of Mario 3. It's
probably my favorite out of all the Nintendo
ones. It was interesting. It certainly had more
to deal with because you had the different worlds
in the game. So you weren't having to just make
stuff up like you didn't in the Super Show yet.
You had a desert world and a giant world and
all these different wacky worlds to deal with.
And the one episode that just sticks out of my
mind every time this show is brought up is the
Milly Vanilli episode. Oh my god. because they
had to change well they like when it aired it
was it was fine it was cool it was what was going
on at the time in 1991 and then as the DVD release
came out they had to change all the music to
the mega move because they couldn't get the rights
or they didn't want to you know spend the money
to buy the rights to get a million vanilla song
on the DVD set well that episode only aired properly
once because right after it released the scandal
broke the scandal broke about them yeah and and
the rerun of that was already screwed up yeah
um and this this show and news of mario world
have nearly a direct continuity link to each
other because obviously super mario world was
the next game After Mario 3 because that's when
they transitioned to Super Nintendo. I don't
remember because I haven't seen those episodes
in a while I don't remember. Did they really
ever say? Well, we left the Mushroom Kingdom
to find a new world I forget how I don't think
so. I I don't remember there being much continuity
at all. Yeah Super Mario world is alright I prefer
Yoshi in the games versus Yoshi in the cartoon
because Yoshi in the cartoon is just downright
annoying as hell. In the game he had a suction
sound to his voice but in the cartoon he has
kind of the baby voice. Yeah. And then the video
games adopted the baby voice later on. As Bob
Mackie pointed out. Oh god. Alright now on to
some really really awesome stuff. This is a car
that isn't the next one is a cartoon that really
For me made the games come to life. We've already
done a Tooncast beyond about it, which you were
on but the 95 Mega Man series This was awesome
Yeah, I don't know what else much else I could
say about it, but basically What I had said on
the other show was that it was pretty decently
animated. The only thing that kind of disappointed
me was that the whole concept of Mega Man was
like a rock, paper, scissors thing and they never
did that in the cartoon. And it was one of those
things, it was one of the rare times that converting
something like that to the cartoon would have
worked. Even when you say a rock -paper -scissors
you mean as far as the powers? Yeah, how each
power has each each boss has like a weakness
to a different power In fact, there's a hint
in in just the the first game with the the name
rock, you know rock man And there's a guy called
cut man. He's the scissors and you're the rock
I wonder if he's first you go beat him and then
yeah, and then from there you kind of figure
out who beats who? Yeah You know a lot of people
complain that oh This series is just Mega Man
touching their arm or touching their forehead
to get their powers Well, you know what I pointed
out in the other podcast was that in a cartoon
base? That's what it had to be Yeah, otherwise
you couldn't have Mega Man killing The bosses
you wouldn't have another episode like yeah,
you could keep introducing bosses as the episodes
go along But if you killed cutsman and gutsman
You wouldn't have... It would be the most homicidal
show ever. Yeah, exactly. Because I'm pretty
sure they were up to Mega Man 6 or 7 at that
point. So there was quite a roster already. Yeah,
I think they were up to 6. But yeah, I love Mega
Man and that theme song... Everybody has that
theme song stuck in their head at one point or
another. They just do if you don't there's something
wrong with you Donkey Kong Country, I barely
remember this show. I don't even know why they
adapted it from the game. I don't know it I It's
from the mid 90s, which was not a good time for
CG animation on TV You know, I mean a lot of
people love reboot Reboot was written pretty
well, but it the animation especially in the
early episodes are kind of Not so good and in
this show. I don't think it was much better But
it's not I don't think it's a mainframe Show,
I think it's actually Nelvana Mmm, which is weird.
I never would have thought Nelvana did CGI animation
Well somebody had to recreate those awesome backgrounds
from the game The plastic the plastic leaves
everywhere the plastic leaves and the and the
gray skies as the snow blows in and Donkey Kong
Country best Super Nintendo game ever not yeah
That game if you I don't I don't mean to digress
too much here, but that game had like a VHS promotional
thing come out that was sent to every subscriber
of Nintendo power and The people in this video
were like we had a special Supercomputer output
it specially to the Super Nintendo to make these
awesome graphics and I'm like, okay, it's 1995
I don't know the word rasterized, but I know
what it means and it's not that special Yoshi's
Island was much better than this game. Oh wow
And that's saying something cuz a lot of those
A lot of those later sequel games to the classic
Mario, like, okay, Super Mario Bros. 3 was kind
of it for the NES generation. Super Mario World
was amazing in an update to the Mario franchise.
But once you got to Yoshi's Island, I was like,
this is not Super Mario World 2. I don't care
what anyone says. This is not the sequel to that
game. It can't be. Well, it really wasn't supposed
to be. That was an American invention, was putting
that title on it. Okay. And the final two are
from a Sega franchise. Sonic the Hedgehog, which
is the darker series, and Adventures of Sonic
the Hedgehog, which is the comedic series. I've
not really seen either one of these. some episodes.
And I'm like, mmm. They're both on Netflix, so
you can watch at your leisure or not. Watch at
my horror. Yeah, yeah, yeah, watch at your horror.
I barely, like I remember watching Sonic the
Hedgehog as a kid, but I think I only remember
it for the fact that it's fucking Urkel as the
voice. Not that there's anything wrong with Julia
white, but I was like, hey, wait a second. It's
Urkel. What the hell? That's like everybody's
favorite trivia question outside of Captain the
whale ban. I was Mario. Yeah Yeah, um, I liked
adventures a lot better because it was comedic
You know you had oh god, I'm forgetting the two
names of the other robots The bird and the drill
thing god, I know I know somebody's screaming
at their iPod right now, but It's kind of like
snooper and blabber yeah types of Robotnik slash
Eggman slash milkman, whatever he's called this
this time around It's his henchmen and I liked
that they are Comedic and everything else and
and that cartoon adventures is is almost like
a Precursor to Beast Wars a little bit because
you have both Gary Chalk and I Think Scott McNeil
or so. I don't want any other Beast Wars voice
actors is in it. Oh That was the one of the greatest
things about Some trivia bits here some people
might not know I know I'm jumping ahead, but
I'm jumping back Super Mario Bros. 3, the cartoon.
It was Tara Strong as Hip and Hop. Oh yeah, that's
right. And then in Captain N it was Gary Chalk
as King Hippo. So yeah. Alright, I think we're
gonna take a quick break. You're gonna hear some
ads and then we'll come back to tell you when
this show is actually going to be premiered.

we are back here on pixels in the animation and
for those of you wondering This is this will
actually air this episode episode zero will air
June 21st 2012 the actual podcast is I'm pulling
in WWE moment here ladies and gentlemen the actual
podcast will not start until June 21st 2013 Well
look at the bright side you'll have seen GI Joe
to by that The reason for this is is because
pixels in the animation is gonna be one of our
featured new podcasts in 2013 and I wanted to
you know to give Neil and myself enough time
to Track all this stuff down as I said earlier
I think the hardest one to track down at this
point the only one that we won't be able to track
down Unless you know by mysterious hand of God
is Donkey Kong Country We are still going to
review that series somehow Somehow somehow It's
magic But but yeah, it's it's gonna be an entire
year before the show starts Just to give Neil
and I some time and you know we can figure other
stuff out and whatever else the format Is honestly
thanks to optimus solo He came up with a new
format for us on Masked Mayhem, our mask review
podcast, where we discuss, we say the plot, discuss
it a little bit, we talk about what we like and
what we didn't like. So that's how the layout
of the show is gonna go. Do you have any parting
words before I go through the outro? Not really,
no. Okay. So thank you for joining us here on...

You can do that. There is a five minute time
limit on that. One thing here to note is that
because when we were originally thinking up this
idea, we were only going to talk about the when
it comes to Super Mario Brothers Super Show,
we were only going to talk about the cartoon
part of it. And then we said, screw it. We might
as well talk about the live action stuff as well.
However, in a what is it like 22 minutes? Are
they 20 like I know the cartoons are 11 minutes.
So is the other 11 minutes the live -action stuff?
Do we I thought the cartoons were a little longer
because it felt like the live -action segments
were really short I don't know. I'm not sure
but in any case The reviews for these episodes
for the super over the super show episodes will
be fairly short Like I said, it'll be short to
the point what we like what we didn't like so
Having said that I'm going to read the rest of
the outro We hope you enjoyed this episode of
pixels in the animation wish you'll join us in
One year's time as we start with the following
episodes of Super Mario Brothers Super Show The
bird the bird King Mario of Cramalot Butch Mario
of and Luigi kid Mario's magic carpet rolling
down the river and the great gladiator gig Yes,
that's right six episodes in one podcast. I promise
it will not go over an hour and twenty minutes.
I swear to God it won't, because if it does,
I'm going to kill myself. For now, I am TFG1Mike
with... With TVs, Mr. Neil. Thank you for listening.
Until next year, stay pixelated. Bye!
