About this Episode

The team discusses the box office performance of Guardians of the Galaxy and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles before providing their critique of the film Under the Skin. They analyze the movie's experimental storytelling, sound design, and themes, while questioning whether the artistic presentation succeeded in its intent.

Today on Weekend at the Movies we'll be discussing

some interesting casting calls, a DC film many

people didn't want to happen, and how a movie

can really get under my skin. All that and more

from this past Weekend at the Movies. As I said,

this is Weekend at the Movies. I'm your host,

Optimus Solo. Joining me, as usual, is Frithy

Scent. Hello. Hey, there. Hey, there. And Adolfo

Shabadoo. Hi, there. Hi, there. Hey, there. Ho,

there. All right. Let's start like we always

start, looking at the box office from this past

weekend. What'd you say? I said, that's crazy.

That is a crazy thing to do, start exactly how

we do every week. There was three new films.

Coming out three, I guess, quote unquote major

new films that came out this week, but none of

them were able to crack the top spot or the number

two spot. So we had some holdovers here. Staying

at number one for the second week in a row would

be Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles beating out Guardians

of the Galaxy by $4 million this past weekend.

But overall Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sits

at $117 million. which is still not at its budget

whereas Guardians of the Galaxy in just one more

week sits at 222 million which is over 50 million

past its budget so Guardians of the Galaxy definitely

doing better out of the two. Then we had the

trio of new films Let's Be Cops at number three

with 17 million, The Expendables 3 open at number

four with 16 million, and then The Giver in the

fifth spot with 12 million. As far as milestones,

Guardians of the Galaxy, like I said, surpassed

200 million, as did Dawn of the Planet of the

Apes, and its sixth leak has now passed the 200

million mark as well. Biggest drops, probably,

overall. The Purge was at 11th and it dropped

all the way down to 18th. That's pretty much

done, but it made well over its budget, so I

guess that's fine. Sex Tape went from 15 down

to about 20. As far as spots go it is still not

at its budget and Transformers age of extinction

went from 18th down to 25th It had a pretty big

drop. So hopefully it's about done making money

Any observations from the box office from either

of you two? I was expecting the Expendables to

do better than Let's Be Cops, but I don't know.

Yeah, I'm surprised that Expendables 3 came all

the way down into fourth. I thought at least

it might make money on its opening week, but

I guess not when the competition is all these

other films. Sad to see Hercules. I mean, it

brought in another two million, but it's only

at sixty eight million against a hundred million

budget. I wish that was making a little more

money, but it's got a lot of stiff competition.

So hopefully the international market will. Help

Hercules make its budget back and more because

that film deserves to be doing a little bit better

Yeah The longest movie right now that we have

going chef is still out in some theaters 15th

week in the box office for chef 15th week for

neighbors 22nd week for a movie called 50 to

1 so those are your longest x -men days of future

past also 13th week Still bringing in a little

bit of money So those are some long -standing

ones. I remember Lego movies on there forever.

The longer you can stay out there and keep trickling

in the money the better, I guess, for you. We'll

have to see. Notwithstanding any of the new films,

do you expect next week for Turtles to remain

on top? Guardians of Galaxy to replace it? Or

any moving and shaking going on? Well, what's

coming out next week? Um next week. I don't think

there's a huge movie coming out here. Um, oh

I apologize. I'm wrong and then the Number one

movie next week will be sin city. I assume Okay.

Yeah, if nothing if nothing's making over 30

million like at least make 50, right? I don't

know if it'll make 50 but I Don't know how much

I don't know. I don't remember how well the other

sin city did Um, but this has quite a bit of

a following so I would expect that that would

knock everything onto the number one spot. Hopefully

Guardians of the Galaxy can stay at number two

though, and Turtles will drop. That's what I'm

hoping for. You haven't seen Sin City, right

Kevin? Oh, I have not. I need to see that very

soon now. I thought I had more time. Do we own

a copy of that between us, Nate? I do. Good.

There's never any time we need to watch that.

Its opening weekend was just under 30 million.

The original Sin City. I would assume it might

do better than that because there's been some

time for... No following to form for that domestically.

It only made seventy five made under seventy

five million That's crazy to me because to me

that movie was as big as V for vendetta in my

circle of friends Yeah, and I but V for vendetta

was so much better Really then since Eddie V

for vendetta was a little too heavy -handed It's

good. Yeah, I just don't think it's as good as

oh V for vendetta made even less money Looking

at the yearly box office as we usually do Captain

America still standing tall at the number one

spot Followed very closely by Lego movie at number

two. Unfortunately, the Transformers movie is

at number three, which should probably stay for

a little while Maleficent at four X -Men at five

with Guardians of the Galaxy Very close to overtaking

that It's only Guardians of the Galaxy is only

10 million away from breaking into that top five

So I would expect that that will happen in the

next week, if not the next 10 days or so. All

right, getting into our headlines. I know some

people are going to be excited about this one.

I will try to be nice to those people. Power

Rangers movie now has a set release date and

that would be 2016. We're talking about July

of 2016. Here's the quote for the description

of it, a modern reinvention of the mighty Morphin

Power Rangers, a group of ordinary high school

kids who find themselves infused with extraterrestrial

powers and must harness those powers as a team

to save the world. Well, that's not right. What

do you mean, that's not right? No, a group of

high school kids with attitude. OK, to find themselves.

I don't know. Is it extra extraterrestrial? I

thought that was a good word. Wasn't Zordon?

Zora, I mean, big old floaty as they were spacemen.

I know. Well, yeah. Rita was on the moon, wasn't

she? Yeah, yeah. She came out of the moon sewer.

That's that's exactly what happened at the beginning

of that TV show. Apparently the writers. I did

not know this, but it says X -Men first class

writers. Ashley Miller and Jack Stentz are currently

working on the script. Do you think they're all

going to wear like their colors? Like like. Kimberly's

gonna have like a pink headband and stuff Yeah,

like like dude if the art direction doesn't do

that or cast that art direction or costumes I

don't know if they kind of do that and that's

a waste of a perfect opportunity. I know um But

like also I feel like the Power Rangers. It's

like to do a modern interpretation Like I feel

like the Power Rangers are kind of like timeless

Maybe not. I know. I think that is a complete

terrible thing to say. No, no, no, no. As in

they were good in one year. No, no, no, no. Like

high school hasn't changed much since the 90s.

That's not true. You think they're going to make

like the like, are they going to change them

a lot or a little or none? Like because like

they had a goth kid at the Black Ranger. Come

on, which one's gonna be the technology one Blue

Ranger with his glasses. Yeah July of 2016 just

to put that into I guess maybe a little bit better

focus that will put it up against one of the

born movies The next chapter in the born identity

ultimatum supremacy series and also will put

it up against Guy Ritchie's King Arthur film

So it'll have some big big movies that it's going

against if all of those first happenstance stay

in those slots, which doesn't always happen.

I feel like The Bourne Identity and the King

Arthur film have some one big movie to go up

against. Like the Power Rangers movie is going

to be huge, dude. I want I want to agree with

you. I don't think you're anywhere near the mark.

Come on. Also, was that earlier the which was

going to be tech savvy? Was that like a race?

Joke bait because there's an Asian. No, I was

just I don't know anything about the Power Rangers.

I didn't know if there was like a tech guy in

the original group, but I was trying to think

of the one with glasses. The nerd. I was just

trying to think of modern day kids, what they're

into. And you were like, yeah. And I'm like,

well, there's definitely a technology is a huge

now where it wasn't as big then. Although they

had technology, it was pretty cool. They're communicators

that were essentially cool walkie talkie bones.

Where you at, dog? Nate, were you going to say

something else or just laugh? No, I don't. OK.

I don't. More sad news, I guess, in the world

of Hollywood for film lovers. It was almost I

think it was only like a day after Robin Williams

passed away that Lauren Bacall also died at the

age of 89. Obviously known for roles like The

Big Sleep, Key Largo, Dark Passage, Dogville,

The Mirror Has Two Faces, kind of one of Hollywood's

iconic people from that time era one of the last

I think living ones from that era To pass I don't

think there's many people still around from that

era Obviously the connection to her first husband

Humphrey Bogart So a lot of people probably know

of the name I don't know how many people in our

generation are familiar with her roles or her

movies. Have you guys ever seen any of those

films? Nope unfortunately not So, I mean, I recognize

her, recognize the name, recognize both what

she looked like in her prime and later on in

life. I mean, she was still doing stuff for a

long, long time. I had that husky voice for a

female that was really kind of fit the femme

fatale or the noir type of films that she was

in. Hollywood losing a couple people in the same

week, so I'm sure there'll be all kinds of tributes

to them to both her and Robin Williams For the

next couple weeks and months and then on into

the next Oscar season Also in headlines getting

back to what we haven't done in a while. Let's

talk about DC and Marvel and stuff like that

Everyone I guess is funny because this is the

same people that reported last week and didn't

believe Vin Diesel When he was making his tweet

or his Facebook Facebook post. That's what it

was with the word inhuman in it And they were

all like, oh, Vin Diesel, we're not taking you

serious. But there's a new report from Collider

that the studio is actually moving forward with

an Inhumans project. Joe Robert Cole has written

a script that Marvel is happy with, according

to the article, and the studio is now looking

for a director to helm the new project. And it's

saying it could occupy one of the untitled Marvel

movie slots that they have in their, you know,

20 year long release schedule. Sure. It's only

20 years now. I thought it was longer. I don't

know. So I guess inhumans could be happening

more so than what people thought a week ago or

a couple of weeks ago. So what do you guys think?

Good or bad that inhumans could actually be happening,

Matt? I'd watch it. Nate, do you think this is

too much of something that people will think

is just trying to do the same thing that they

did with Guardians of the Galaxy or is it different

enough to stand by itself? Oh, I mean, it'll

probably I mean, they'll make it different enough.

Even if it's not that different from like the

comics. But like until I see a bad Disney Marvel

movie, I'm not going to really be too worried

for people that don't know. I know there's a

lot of people that are very knowledgeable about

Marvel and DC properties, et cetera, Matt. But

fill the other half of us in. Who all are people

that are in this inhumans group? Like, the members

of the Inhumans. Yes, this is a set group. Is

that something that has altered and changed throughout

different... I think it's more set than just

about any other group. Like, even more than the

X -Men. Because they've got a very limited...

Well, I think they have a very limited population.

But at the same time, I think they have access

to the Terrigen Mists, which created them originally.

Like, honestly, I've read maybe a half a dozen

Inhumans books. I don't know all of the Movers

and Shakers. Black Bolt's their king. who can

yell and to the point that I think he can actually

blow up the entire moon if he were to yell like

his whispers enough to destroy a starship there's

a crystal and Medusa are both a part of the group

yeah I don't know I mean I'm sure I've heard

his name once or twice but no more than that

the the girl in the far back is crystal and the

girl right behind the other guys Medusa who has

a super long hair that's like prehensile. That's

pretty cool. Gotcha. And I think both of them

have dated different members of the Fantastic

Four. Nice. I think. All the world's intertwined.

Shifting to the other side of the coin, I guess.

Everybody, I remember us doing, I think one of

our questions. a long time ago was about this

topic and if people would watch it, be interested

or not. And we got an overwhelming negative response

to the idea of an Aquaman film. But now Warner

has commissioned apparently two different Aquaman

scripts. So we have Will Beale and Kurt Johnstead

each writing their own version and then apparently

DC or the people behind this will look at those

scripts and the bosses will decide which one

is their favorite. And they're saying that this

might be the first DC project to come after the

Batman versus Superman thing, which might put

it sometime in the fall winter of 2016. Obviously,

the rumors were that Jason Momoa from Game of

Thrones would be playing Aquaman. But again,

I don't think anybody took this serious the first

time we reported it. But apparently now Warner

is going forward with an Aquaman movie. What

are your thoughts, Nate? I don't have the hatred

for Aquaman that a lot of people have I'm totally

down to see an Aquaman movie Yeah, but and I

also like the idea of just like Commissioning

two different writers to give two different takes

on it and then like seeing what works and what

doesn't work, right? I don't know if it's if

they're gonna do this, but it would be cool if

they like took it and we're like I like elements

of this. I like elements of this. How can we

work it together? My hope is that they take advantage

of the opportunity to do something that we've

never seen before in a comic book movie and just

really capitalize on the water aspect of this

with our current technology and things that we

can do now that none of us will have ever seen

before. I think it's a unique opportunity for

them to do something that's just from a cinematic

standpoint, something that that could be talked

about regardless of, you know, it could be one

of those films where, you know, even if the plot

doesn't work, or even if people don't like this

or that, that it might be still something that's,

you know, worth seeing just for what they do

with it, if they go that route. Matt, what about

you? I want to echo what Ney said a little bit

and add my own two cents. I agree. I don't have

any dislike of Aquaman. In fact, I went through

a period where I was really trying to like Aquaman.

Being told he's awesome the comics and I bought

comics written by so many different people And

it's it's hard to find really good Aquaman comic,

but I think the issue is it's easy to hate Aquaman

It's like fun. Like it's a popular thing like

Adult swim like the robot chicken makes fun of

them and family guy makes fun of them And so

it's just like it's easy to just dislike him

because that's what's in the pop culture But

honestly, you gotta think he's he's king of the

ocean And the ocean's 75 % of Earth. So, I mean,

he's ruler over most of the Earth. What kind

of other characters are in his world? I mean,

I know all the DC stuff is, you know, somewhat

intertwined, but in his specific storylines.

Well, he's got his wife, Mira, who's very similar

to him. The Aqua Girl was a sorcerer, I want

to say. Really, I think he mostly goes solo.

He had a squid One particular squid like named

Toppo or something like that that he always called

on It was practically a companion, but it was

still squid that I don't think could talk in

most incarnations But really it was him versus

just all of his villains like Ocean Master and

Black Manta More than it was him teaming up with

people Are those the main two villains that you

named? Think those are his two biggest villains

and I think ocean master One of them is his half

-brother. I want to say it's ocean master black

man is black and that would be weird But uh,

yeah, yeah, so the ocean master is his half -brother

Yeah, um, I don't know. I I personally I like

Aquaman I think he's got a lot of cool powers

and when written right he's really well And when

written bad, he is really bad. So it's like when

you write a bad Superman story It's like it's

boring, you know, you've got all the powers Of

course, he's gonna win but like when you write

a bad Aquaman story since everyone already doesn't

want to like him it goes really bad Yeah, I can

see that, you know, what's all the pop culture

set up to make fun of him if anybody has you

know the slightest inkling that it's gonna be

like that they'll jump on board and Diss on him.

I don't know. I'm with you guys. I don't have

any preconceived notion that he would be bad

or anything like that, so I'm all for it. Like

I said, I just hope it's something unique that

we haven't seen before in a comic book movie.

If they get Jason Momoa because like, I hope,

you know, he's just blonde. He's always been

blonde. Like even when Aquaman died during infinite

crisis or was believed dead and a new Aquaman

arose, He was blonde, like he's always been blonde.

We'll see. But then there's a one time he turned

into like a tentacle monster. That was after

Infinite Crisis, where he's half a medical monster,

half made out of water. Yeah, I really liked

that Aquaman storyline, and I wish instead of

the guy they got to write it, they had asked

me to write it because I got a lot of mistakes.

Was it a Neil Gaiman? No, well, I mean, Neil

Gaiman started off for like two issues and that

was great. And then they handed it to Tad Williams.

Oh, right. Tad. Right. Also, surfacing this week

could be complete nonsense and nothing to do

with anything. But when you have anything attached

to Star Wars, it's going to make headlines. And

there was pictures circulating about Han Solo

and Stormtroopers this past week. Should we ignore

this should we look into this should we even

comment on it? What do you what did you guys

think of these pictures? And what does it mean

to you? I guess overall Matt? Well, I've given

my opinion elsewhere and it's two simple sentences

one Hansel would just like it looks like Harrison

Ford's gray hair To why would they develop new

armor for stormtroopers at the Empire's battle

after you know was entirely ruined by the whole

It's cool to have stormtroopers and stormtrooper

armor. I would love to see a sect of stormtroopers

that are like, we don't care if the empire is

falling and the rebellion is winning. We're still

gonna be stormtroopers, but they should be in

their old armor, maybe even having it degrade

because they don't have the funding that they

had before, not developing new technology. Yeah,

I'm curious to see the if that is in fact stormtroopers

and if they're existing in this film and if they're

looking a little more modern and Like their technology

improved What the explanation of that is cool?

Yeah, it looks cool, but I'm cool, but I don't

know there's no reason I want to see how they

explain that. What do you think Nate? I don't

know Nate doesn't like commenting on things that

may not be anything. Oh, yeah, dude He is big

into doesn't like to speculate or anything Yeah,

you would never get hired by CNN Fox News or

MSNBC. That's fine. I'm completely okay with

that but I mean it could be like You know they

could start it off with like the opening scroll

and be all like the death troopers The Darth

Vader's secret sector stormtroopers are trying

to avenge his death They have new technology

that other stormtroopers didn't have access to

you know, and that's like, oh, okay so it was

developed before the fall of the empire and they

have you know there's there's routes that they

could go with but it'll be interesting to see

which route they go if this in fact is anything

from the movie if this isn't just some guy doing

some cg at home and throwing it on the internet

right all right um last headline before we get

into some sequel and remake stuff uh big article

going around Based on something that director

James Gunn said, that is the director of Guardians

of the Galaxy, who has stated that the Spartanx

ruler Jason, I don't know if that's how you actually

say his name, Jason, will not make it into the

Guardians of the Galaxy 2, the film sequel. So

saying that he has something else in mind when

the time comes to reveal the identity of Peter

Quill's dad. And that was one of the biggest

things I was wondering about when that because

they mentioned his father multiple times and

I'm like should I know this guy or whatever.

So now they're saying that he could have something

else in mind. The article throws out some different

scenarios about who could possibly be that revealed

as his father. First of all, before we even get

to different ideas of who could be the father,

are we okay with it not being the person that

I guess traditionally it is, Matt? Yeah, I mean

they've already changed so much, but you know

changing the the Kree war against the Skrulls

into the Start whatever those get in the Nova

Corps and changing the Nova Corps from super

powered beings to just the intergalactic police

force there's a I mean you know you change it

to what it needs to be and You know, I'm gonna

enjoy it as long as we keep it up like the first

one So as much as I am the guy who says don't

change it um And if you change it, and it's not

worse. I don't got complaints Okay, so some of

the names that are being thrown out there Nate

before you comments and on a major victory Has

been one name thrown out there Starhawk Odin

from Thor Eternity wait wait wait they think

I'm sorry go ahead And Adam warlock Our different

names being thrown out there first Nate Is it

okay for them to switch the dad and if so or

any of these names? People that you'd be excited

about or any of them that you would have problems

with I think Odin would be a funny one. I Don't

know. It's like yeah, we got to tie it in to

other movies because you know wink wink. Let's

have it be Thor What he stores half brother?

Take that Loki, you're not even a half -brother.

Yeah. Yeah, I don't know. I don't have any issue

with them changing it. I don't know that much

about the Guardians of the Galaxy in the comics

to begin with, so. I mean, it seemed like they

intentionally made a point to make it important

that his father was somebody that we would eventually

figure out. Yeah, and I mean, whatever they do

with it, it's fine. And I don't know too much

of the list, actually. My comp knowledge doesn't

go that far like Matt Matt Matt's would Man any

of those people make a Peak you pick more interest

in you than one of the others Well, I mean I'd

love to see Adam warlock on the big screen and

I don't think they can do an infinity gauntlet

story without him Considering he was the main

driving force for that whole book But I don't

think he'd be a good idea for star -lord dad.

I think Think of Star -Lord, you know Like he's

like 35 37. I think Adam Warlock. I think 40

at most Although he's like an alien Speaking

of sequels and remakes real quick just three

of them to throw out at you. First of all, unfortunately

Godzilla 2 Gets a 2018 release date. Yep. We're

jumping into 2018 here June of 2018. So I have

no problem waiting that long. Maybe they will

find someone that can write a script in that

time. I don't know. By then, it's going to look

completely different. It's like four years from

now. Yeah. That's insane. Whatever. I guess they'll

do that again. And then the other ones would

be Martin Lawrence confirming that Bad Boys 3

is on the way. And that the Texas Chainsaw Massacre

is going to have a prequel and it will be called

a Leatherface. And apparently that is going to

deal with the guy's teenage years from the Texas

Chainsaw Massacre. Any thoughts on either of

those things, Nate? Bad Boys III or prequel to

Texas Chainsaw Massacre? I want. Well. My one

Godzilla to be good. I wanted to just be more

monsters And more fighting which is what they

said if you go to the article it says That they

know I don't know how Totalfilm .com knows but

they know that Rodan Mothra and Ghidorah are

all going to feature in some capacity. Oh, wow

So that's three more three months. Well, I guess

one more monster And then I Don't know too much

about the bad boys films at all. I haven't seen

them I Think the second one is supposed to be

kind of fun. That's yeah, I know like funny exploding

Is that a Bay movie? He was Independence Day,

okay different Will Smith movie What about the

Texas Chainsaw Masker prequel I've never seen

any of them so All right, oh bad boys to directed

by Michael Bay was directed Way to be just as

quick and I'm to be as I am they boo. Yeah, nice.

All right, then getting into some castings A

couple different things happening apparently,

a Mary Shelley biopic and it will star Game of

Thrones actress Sophie Turner. Did either of

you know who Mary Shelley was before you opened

the article? Yes. Yeah. Okay. Yes. Who does she

play in? She looks like Sansa, but that could

be wrong. Gotcha. I don't know. I think it's

cool that they're doing a Mary Shelley biopic.

But I don't know enough about the topic to form

an opinion yet. But I'm game for it. What about

you, Matt? I don't know. I didn't even find myself

finishing the book. So we turn it into Sansa

Stark. Like I didn't read all of Frankenstein.

I want to. I want to get a copy of it because

it was one of those school books. Like, I don't

want to read that. It's for school. School's

too. But I don't know enough about her herself.

I mean, I know she had to write under a pseudonym

because women weren't allowed to write books

and whatever. But other than that, I don't know

what else there is. We had reported maybe I don't

know a month or two ago Well, probably not since

we took a month off at one point three months

off or three months ago That there was going

to be a remake of the classic Ben her film Which

we kind of had mixed opinions about that mostly

negative that they were gonna be doing that that

probably didn't need to be done but apparently

now they're starting to throw out some names

there as who is on MGM and Paramount's list of

who to play Ben Hur. Now they already have the

most recent draft of the script was written by

the same guy that wrote 12 Years a Slave last

year Oscar winner John Ridley. So that's good.

Said to draw heavily on the Jesus Christ story

which runs in parallel with the actions of Judah

Ben Hur and the name that they're throwing out

there at the top of their wish list would be

Tom Hiddleston. What do you think of Tom Hiddleston

as Ben Hur Nate? Um, this is a really, really

bad week for me. Um, I haven't seen Ben Hur.

So again, I'm just like, I like Tom Hiddleston,

but I don't know what the film's about. Fair

enough. Add it to the list. Um, I think that

Tom Hiddleston is like Ben Kingsley. And he's

a villain in my head, and I don't know if I want

him to be the hero. Oh, I totally want him to

try new things. Yeah, I'm sure he's probably

not been the villain in every movie. And I don't

I don't remember. I think Nate and I were like,

yeah, super huge movies probably shouldn't be

remade. Also, neither of us have seen Ben Hearn.

That said, it's like, you know, sword fights

and chariot fights and stuff. Kind of want them

to remake it in so much that I guess I haven't

seen the original one and I just want more fantasy

styled movies. Well, it's historic, right? It's

not fantasy, right? Well, it's it's it's what

usually goes under. I think they usually call

it just epics. Yeah. OK. Well, I like they they

should make a really good movie set in the same

time. But not call it been hurt. Yeah, that's

what I want Like when they need the name recognition

to get people to actually go or something. They

don't Look at transport. They do nothing like

the name And I just want to read this next headline

and just I guess try to digest it for a second

Paul Giamatti joins NWA crew for straight out

of Compton biopic I don't know what you're laughing

about. Paul Giamatti is amazing. And like, you

know, he's probably going to be like a record

executive or something. So apparently some people

will know these actors, some people will not.

Jason Mitchell as easy, Corey Hawkins as Dr.

Dre, Aldous Hodge as MC Ren, Neil Brown Jr. as

DJ Yella. And Ice Cube's real life son, O'Shea

Jackson Jr. As his famous father, Ice Cube. And

then I just had like a thought where it's like,

why is it not O'Shea Cube? What, he's got to

be all different from his dad? And Paul G. Monty

will be playing the group's manager, Jerry. There

you go. So no. Have you seen Man on the Moon

with Jim Carrey? Yeah. Paul G. Monty was in that.

It was a biopic kind of. Okay, we're not laughing

about we're not laughing about Paul Giamatti

or biopics. We're laughing at the idea of Paul

Giamatti in the NWA movie Immediately is like

oh, that's funny, and it's like oh well. I know

I totally It's a good shock laugh Nate dude,

dude. I love me some NWA He does. That's not

even a joke. I did not know that about Nate.

Oh, yeah. Learn something new about him every

day. You knew my brother. Exposed to a lot of

crap at a young age. Yeah, man. Not a lot of

trailers this week. A few new ones that came

out. Revenge of the Green Dragons, Rudderless,

Open Windows, Kelly and Cal, Beyond the Lights,

Guidance, and the Admiral Roaring Currents. Any

of those strike any interest in you, Nate? The

Admiral looks amazing. It looks interesting.

The greatest naval battle of all time. dude,

like I don't know if I'm just like I love the

aesthetics or whatever, but Like that movie looks

fun. I thought Billy Crudup and Rudderless looked

like it might have a tiny bit of potential Well,

it's Billy Crudup yeah Other than that, I don't

know The revenge of the green dragons looks pretty

cool, too You see the revenge of the green dragons

you're like oh shit green dragons are gonna start

terrorizing this fantasy doesn't happen like

that fucking Robin Hood movie shut up Matt not

everything has to be about wait. It's about street

gangs Like that I like it looks like it's well

done, and I want that type of thing to happen

like I don't know Forgive me if this sounds really

like dumb or ignorant, but like I like when movies

starring predominantly not white people are good.

Yeah, like we need we need the Asian Slumdog

Millionaire. Although I guess he is. But whatever.

Yeah, whatever. Any other trailer? There's a

little bit more ignorant than you wanted, I think.

That's right. I'll pretend I'll tell him. Guy

and his dad. Which one? Yeah, the Billy Crudup

rudderless one. Yeah with the music wait the

music yeah, and I actually thought open windows

looks pretty cool. I would actually thought that

Elijah would Yeah, apparently will never be older

than 24 Yeah, he still looks really young You

can only play young adults for the rest of his

life. He will never be able to play the father

Role in any film. I have like a swing when he

hits like 45 or 50. They'll be like, oh, no,

he can't do it anymore. Oh, my gosh. And then

he'll he'll go away for a while. Yeah. And then

come back as like the crazy old grandpa. That's

like the comic relief. We can only hope. I want

him with a huge beard and just super wrinkly

face. I expect him to eventually take the role

of Warwick Davis and just play like weird side

characters in fantasy films where he has like

so much makeup and costume on that you're not

really sure if it's him or not but it must be

because it looks just like Elijah Wood. I don't

know. I don't know where that's going with that.

Oh, you said I wanted to be like Warwick Davis

and I was like, what, knee walk? How does that

work? I get that he was a hobbit. Like, that's

short. Yeah, I want him to go that direction

and just play random side like people They aren't

really don't have them huge speaking roles, but

you're like, that's Elijah wood. He is in that

film I'm swearing is in the background I don't

know any other trailer stuff that you guys want

to bring up Now everything else was kind of meh.

Yeah pretty meh week for trailers, but that's

okay All right, then we're gonna take a quick

break and we will be back with the main attraction

Hi, this is Greg This is Chuck. And this is Dan.

And we are Talking in Circles. Because the world

needs another podcast, we are here as Geekcast

Radio's newest edition. And as the title says,

each week we get lost in conversation about a

wide range of topics, including movies, comics,

games, art, TV, and even occasionally sports.

We play games and discuss pivotal topics like

who would win in a fight, the Kool -Aid Man or

Tony the Tiger, and examine the hot button issues

of the world of Geekdom. We keep things fresh

by taking timeless topics in new directions.

We are simply three friends having a fun time

talking about life's most fascinating foibles.

Stay connected with us every Tuesday on iTunes

or at Geocastradio .com. Really? That makes sense

considering my microphone is like a fix to my

face. I guess this should be the all turning

and everything should not affect it at all. I

don't know how you. I'm not noticing a lot, but

I'm noticing that every once in a while. I'm

sorry. That's OK. We'll forgive you. Like is

it like fading out, like just getting quieter

or is it fading out? Maybe Internet. No, it sounds

like it's just like kind of getting quieter for

a second and getting louder like almost as if

it wasn't next to your mouth somehow, but maybe

it is. All right. Are you not using your your

good microphone? Did we not have this conversation

45 minutes ago? Man. Where I was like, hey, I'm

leaning back. I'm comfortable on the couch. I'm

three feet away from the yeti. No, I'm not going

to do that. All right. All right, whatever. Amy

remembers the conversation. I remember the conversation

that was actually 45 minutes ago almost on the

dot. Alright, bringing it back. Alright, thanks

for sticking with us. Main attraction today,

we always start with what we've been watching.

I have not watched a lot of film since our last

record. kind of a shorter week in between our

records than usual. So I was shorter week. Yes,

I was only able to watch the films that we watched

on Friday altogether, which would be Dragonfire

or I guess you can call it the Orc Wars and Under

the Skin, which we'll get to in a minute. And

then Nate and I and John watched Transcendence

yesterday. Those are the only films that I was

going to talk about. Are there any other films

besides that, though, that you guys saw over

the last week? Nate, I saw chasing Amy and Jumanji.

Nice. Yeah. How did you how was Jumanji? It was

still good, but there's a lot of dumb things

like like they they get like a few rounds into

the thing. And then it's like it's like they

got a lion. They got some monkeys and they got

some bees and everything else is fine. And they

could have just stopped and been like, well,

there's a lion now. Was watching in general was

it tough or was it just I? Don't know cuz I wanted

to watch a bunch of Robin Williams movies, and

then I didn't know if I wanted to I mean it wasn't

like like I noticed Robin Williams a lot I mean

you know I thought about him a lot more and I

mean he you know it's fun to watch him so but

I didn't like It wasn't not like oh now. I'm

sad, but cuz I don't know Don't I don't think

that way that too much. What do you think of

chasing Amy? It's really good John had never

seen it so We got like he was like hey you want

to watch chasing Amy or like clerks or something

and I was like sure and Netflix had chasing Amy,

so we watched that and Like we got halfway in

and then he's like He's like you've seen chasing

Amy, right? Are you asking me? Yeah? Oh? Never

mind. I don't know. Matt, you've seen Chasing

Amy, right? No. Jeez! Okay, fine. Never mind.

There's like half of Count Smith movies I haven't

seen. Okay. Which are all of the... Like, I didn't

see Chasing Amy. I didn't see Mall Reds. I didn't

see Red State. Although Red State sounds kind

of scary. Red State is amazing! You do not help

that movie every time we talk about it. Oh my

gosh! Half the time you're all like, Red State's

amazing. It's like, okay, cool. And you're like,

it's so good. I want to watch it with you. It's

like, okay, I want to see it. And then you're

like, what? You don't like this thriller? We

need to watch Red State. And it's like, uh -oh.

What about you, Matt? Did you see anything? No,

I don't watch movies. Movies are stupid. All

right, well, let's start. Real quick with the

one that all three of us did not see, which would

be Transcendence. Obviously, it bombed at the

box office, as do at least one Johnny Depp films

a year. Nate, what did you think of Transcendence?

I can't lie. It was like later than usual and

I was a little dozing, you know. I was dozing

off, but and like I was like keeping it up pretty

well, you know, you know, keeping in tune with

the plot. But I feel like I missed something

because the ending didn't like there was like,

I don't know. The ending was was anticlimactic.

Yeah, I mean, I like the attempt at science fiction

and I like I like things that they were making

an attempt to do. I just don't know necessarily

about the execution on that whole thing. I feel

like there was some issues with the pacing. There

was definitely issues with the pacing. There

was also issues with, again, trailers completely

misleading as far as what the film is going to

be about and what the film is going to, what

direction it's going to basically go. I definitely

thought it was going to go a little bit different

than it did. Like more actiony? Just a different

general direction, not necessarily like the tone

as far as action versus, you know, or pacing,

like I just felt like there was going to be different

motivations for certain characters and different

agendas, I guess. Right. And that didn't really

that wasn't really the case. And I just don't

know. I don't know that really. Holds up against

scrutiny, I guess. Yeah, I think you can shoot

a lot of holes in that one. Yeah, I didn't mind

Johnny Depp. He was fine. Yeah, well, I mind

it like. Was having trouble with some of his

character like in the beginning where we're like

this guy's like he's easy, you know He's talking

to him. He's like, are you just you're just trying

to create a god and he's like Well, isn't that

what man has always tried to do? But like he

didn't give any explanation to that, right? Like

he didn't give any examples. I don't know. I

felt like Like he should have been like, well,

you know There's this one time where we made

a car and that was like going way too fast Don't

know technology is cool, but I don't know I also

had issues with like like How Like bad Technology

is like ooh, it's scary, but Now whatever I mean

there was definitely a group that was anti -technology

and a group that was definitely for technology

So you had that going on? It's it's it's not

necessarily a good film But here's what I'll

say about it. I appreciated the attempt to what

they were trying to do. And I like some of the

ideas. And although the movie didn't excite me

and make me like jump up and down, it also didn't

piss me off. Yeah, I mean, it was it was like

it was mild enough to not get mad. It's kind

of like, hey, that tried that didn't really work.

Yeah, that's all right. It didn't. I don't feel

like I lost two hours of my life. Try again,

Johnny Depp. It's okay. I feel like Kevin's teasing

something. Nonsense. I have a participation trophy.

Go ahead. Oh, and the other thing I wanted to

say was, when there was basically the terrorist

group that was shooting people, the anti -technology

group, I was all for, all right, let's root for

the technology guys and then You're like, oh

the the the terrorist groups the good guys Okay

That's all right. Go ahead movie I don't know.

Let's do that And then one of the films that

we all three saw together the first one I I literally

was at the red box We'll say that like there's

only one I was and I was thinking about getting

the film for us to watch I mean, I know we always

have a million films to watch but see the way

we never narrow that list down as we continue

to just bring our own own different films to

to watch and I was like there's been a bunch

that have come out now because we're getting

to the point of the year where now we can catch

up on all the movies that we missed for the first

four or five months of the year and I wanted

to get snowpiercer because obviously Dan has

said some good things about that film and it

seems interesting and all three of us have some

varying levels of interest in that film so I

was gonna see that and that it was not in the

red box so I ended up getting Transcendence and

The movie that we'll talk about in a second under

the skin But I was like man. I want something

else just in case they don't want to see either

these films since I struck out on this whole

snowpiercer thing and there was a starting to

form a line behind me like two different cars

like pulled up simultaneously and it just looked

like wait people upset that they weren't they

were gonna have to stand in line for me to check

it out at the red box and I wanted to read a

bunch of plot synopsis and scan through everything

else but then I just saw a picture of a cover

of a movie that had a big dragon on it and something

that looked like an orc. And I was like, yeah,

I'll get that one. And so I got it. And I proceeded

to try to look it up and I couldn't find it,

which was probably because Dragonfire, even though

that's the name across the cover, is not the

actual name of the movie. So I was confused as

to and it also said it came out in 2014. But

according to most things, it came out in 2013.

And according to what Matt found, the actual

name of the film is Orc Wars. Orc Wars. So anyways,

we watched that because that's fantasy and we

didn't even care if it was bad or not. And then

we put it on and the previews definitely set

the tone for what would probably fit into crappy

movie night type of films. And then we proceeded

to watch Orc Wars. And Matt, what did you think

about that film? I don't know man. It was a movie

that I watched Like it starts off right it starts

off a bunch of orcs like and it's very clearly.

Hey, those are some more They're chasing an elven

girl and like two dudes, right? It looks like

an adventuring party. Maybe they Stepped into

the orcs lair and it didn't go well and they're

fleeing and it's like they're like we gotta go

get to the wizard he'll protect us the wizard

and they're like running to the wizard they run

into the wizard and uh like eventually there's

like a rock portal and she goes through it and

then the wizard is a dude with a bunch of guns

Yeah, man, he takes like out an ak -47 He's just

mowing down orcs and then he like runs out of

bullets throws it on the ground takes out two

pistols Bam -bam -bam -bam runs out of bullets

throws them down pulls out a shotgun. It's like

When the two moons combined this portal opens

that connects orc world with apparently the South

Oh, man, there was so much like the American

West. But instead, we got what appeared to be

hillbilly land with also Native Americans. And

I don't even know where this exists in the place

they ended up. Yeah. This movie is such the like

like Border Patrol like movie. This guy buys

a house that used to be owned by what did they

call him? Well, he was the sentinel sentinel

sentinel world sentinel or whatever But they

also had a name for him didn't they a different

name. I don't know but uh The wizard oh, yeah,

so he buys though the old wizards house and don't

worry the the real estate agent that sells in

the house will later be shooting people with

a sniper rifle So that'll happen and then like

I said when the two moons connect The rock opens

up. It's almost like something you would see

out of Land of the Lost where the rock rolls

down and orcs can come in and they want to kill

the wizard and they want to get the girl that's

in the wizard's land back to Orcland to give

to the chick to apparently sacrifice to the dragon

people. I don't even know why they would call

this movie Dragonfire. The dragon had little

to do with this. Orc War is definitely better.

Yeah. But yeah, so we got just like a dumb hillbillies

and the main guy fighting off orcs. With a bunch

of guns. And then he like brings out a tank at

one point. Yeah, it does that. And then rocket

launchers. And there was an Indian that couldn't

see. There was a blind Indian that was driving

the tank. Native American. I'm sorry, a blind

Native American that was driving the tank. And

then what else happened? That was, yeah, sniper

rifle. sniper rifling and dragons that breathe

fire. Dragons worth a dollar. It was worth a

dollar. Yeah. Apparently this film was made by

people who were looking for help for their premiere

on Facebook and were asking for two people to

join the cast. I like I like movies that are

small enough that I feel like I could join the

cast for a night. Yeah, it seems like there's

a... And the best thing is Matt's looking up

information on these characters, these people

that made the film, and apparently they somehow

got their hand on the Orc costumes from Lord

of the Rings and have proceeded to just try to

make like multiple films using the exact same

Orc costumes. I don't remember anything about

the Lord of the Rings. I thought that was a joke.

No, I just thought the Orc costumes looked like

Orcs out of Lord of the Rings. Oh, okay. They

totally did. It really felt like I had legitimately

found that. No, no. They're just really realistic

or costumes. They do keep making movies with

the exact same or costumes and they're really

well done. I have to admit, especially for such

a small company, but it's like they just keep

shooting slightly, slight variations of the same

movie. If you're listening to this podcast and

you live in Utah, you can probably be a part

of the next movie they do. Yeah. Although maybe

not because they kickstarted and now they're

getting their second feature length film with

Kevin Sorbo in it. They did a Kickstarter to

get Kevin Sorbo, even though they already had

him once. This is all what I found researching

over 30 minutes to an hour. Which greatly enhanced

the movie viewing experience. In my book, knowing

all the things that you were coming up with made

me enjoy the film even more. Even though it was

very bad. It was really stupid. It was. And then.

We watched a movie called Under the Skin. Why?

Because I have been told by someone who I respect

his opinions very much that it was the his favorite

movie of the first half of the year. The movie

revolt Dan had picked this as number one film

of the first half of 2014. So I have to watch

it just like I have to watch Blue Ruin and Boyhood,

who he also has near the top of his list for

the movies this year. So watch Under the Skin.

And I will save my thoughts on that for a minute

so that you guys can talk and then I can warn

Dan to probably stop listening to the podcast.

So, Nate, what did you think of Under the Skin?

I. I really, really started to get into it, like

in the first. You were you were you were into

it. Yeah, I was like, guys, you were like you're

like talking through the intro and I was like,

guys, this could be awesome. I didn't I didn't

say that I was just like I was super entranced

by the the opening it had some really weird effects

that like and and stuff with sound design that

I hadn't seen before and I was just like okay

okay this this could be awesome I can't wait

and then uh and then the movie started and then

stuff happened and I was like okay okay this

is getting kind of weird it's a little weird

and then and then she started like talking to

people that were like You know normal people

and actually I looked up most of the people that

like hitchhiked with her We're like regular people

and they didn't know they were in a movie until

afterwards Yeah, apparently that's why I read

on IMDB at least is that like they were just

regular people that like got into her car They

didn't even know it was Scarlett Johansson or

whatever but like There was a lot of moments

in the movie where Nothing happened. And I can

understand why that would be interesting to some

people like, oh, this movie is trying to do something

and they're trying to because it was like it's

about an alien and it's super alienating. And

I get that. I understand that. But it's like

at times it's just hard to watch. You know what

I mean? I agree. Yeah. So I mean. What were the

parts you liked the most about the film? I like

the visual stuff that they did with Like like

the the weird like seduction death scenes were

cool and then Just other things like that opening

was super really got me into it and I really

liked it but but there's just in it I mean, I

guess I also just like the the realness of Her

talking to the strangers and whatnot and all

the people that were like they probably didn't

even know they were in a movie or whatever um

and that was cool, but like at some point I wanted

a plot to form and I was having a really hard

time like Like waiting because basically you

could sell up the whole movie with a handful

of sentences like like you know, I don't want

to ruin the whole movie but It's trying to make

a point and it's trying to get a certain message

across but like you said that could be done Relatively

quickly Like this this movie would have been

a great short film I feel that is actually probably

a pretty accurate statement I can get behind

that like like if they condensed the whole movie

to like 20 minutes. It would would have been

like One of the coolest things that you can spend

like 20 minutes on. That's really it. It almost

didn't even need that long. Like it literally

could have done what it did in, like you said,

10 to 20 minutes and you would have gotten the

same effect. Yeah, for me, like I would have

gotten the point. Like maybe it's trying to beat

something into less intelligent people, I guess.

Maybe I don't know. Like I don't understand.

Like I get it. I get what you're I get the point

you're making and I get what you're trying to

do. I don't need to watch that long of a movie

to get that. Right. And I don't know. What about

what did you think of the sound and the music?

And you said you like the visuals. What about

the sound stuff? This like the soundtrack was

amazing, like super eerie and creepy, just really

weird. And it really hit on those like those

alien. It's like the whole movie could be an

alien. I don't know how to describe it. Everything

about this movie is so alienating that it's just

weird. They totally nailed the weirdness, but

I don't know how entertaining it was. Matt, what

did you think of Under the Skin? like the whole

thing. Just in general, what were your overall

observations? What were you thinking as the movie

started? I mean, obviously, you don't know what

to expect going into it. What were your feelings

before we even started? Were you excited? Were

you not excited to watch it? And then how did

your opinions evolve as the movie went on? I

think it's interesting because I think Nate and

I would probably rate it around the same for

all the wrong, all different reasons from each

other. Cause like Nate was super interested in

the beginning. I was like, man, this is long

and drawn out boring. Cause like the first 10,

five, 10 minutes, it might've actually been a

minute, but it felt like it was 10 minutes. It

was just like nothing. And it's like, but it

was like, it was like, it was like a dot, a dot

of light. It's growing. Now it's a tube. And

it's like, I don't know, man. It was not doing

it for me. Um, but Nate liked it. Maybe that's

an art thing. Like, he's an artist, I'm a writer,

so maybe I'm just like, hey, that's no writing,

and he's like, hey, that's artsy. Which is actually

something I've been meaning to tell you guys.

I think this movie was, was artsy fartsy, needed

a little less artsy, a little more fartsy. A

little less artsy, a little more writing? Yeah,

something. Actually, I'm super interested in,

like, I think the concept behind it... was great.

Like you guys are saying 20 minute version of

it might have been a better idea. I don't know

if that's if I agree with that. I think it might

just be the medium. Like I think with a narrator,

that movie might have been just a lot better.

It would have cleared up a little bit of the

confusion. I think the confusion went a little

too deep. It was, you know, I mean, it did. It

did aid it in some way, because I'm like, I got

to watch every second of this film to understand

what's happening. But. It was too much of an

investment to do for a film that I knew almost

nothing about even having read about it before

I went into it. So I even had a little bit of

and I'm not going on my opinions yet. I'll let

you finish. But I almost thought that a little

bit opposite, like I did not feel like I needed

to pay attention to every second to understand

what was going on. Like. It was so long and drawn

out what they were doing that and like I picked

up on what their point was like immediately.

and I was hoping that if I paid attention to

every second and every minute and every scene

and everything that like I would get deeper insight

into it and maybe like multiple levels that they

were trying to get us but I feel like it was

still just the same message throughout the entire

thing that they were giving us. Like I didn't

feel like After seeing it like I paid attention

because I thought there's gonna be more and I

wanted more But after seeing it like I feel like

you don't need to pay attention to every second

of that film Like you can watch a couple scenes

and get the point Yeah, yeah But you what were

you saying about the about the other things that

you were talking about the other films that he's

done What? Well, I thought you were saying something

about you that you were super interested in I

am like Having seen this and not been not being

super enthused which is sad because Like when

we made our top ten list I don't know if I put

this in there because I think it was already

out But if you would ask me at the beginning

of the year my top ten this would have been Probably

number nine or ten like interested in seeing

this movie this year I was super excited going

in which is something I don't like to be because

I don't like to set my expectations too high,

but The plot sounded interesting It had Scarlett

Johansson. It was supposed to be, you know, different

than your straight up action movies, which we've

been watching a lot of, although those have been

some of the best movies we've seen all year.

And so I, you know, I wanted something a little

bit different and this was a lot of bit different

and it didn't do it for me. Yeah, I kind of similar

to you like hey, I heard good things about it

had Scarlett Johansson who I like as an actress

The plot like you said seemed interesting So

I kind of I mean I didn't go in maybe at the

same I didn't have it like listed as one of the

most Anticipated films of the year or anything

so I didn't go in like thinking it was gonna

be great But I kind of went in not thinking it

was gonna be great, but not thinking it was gonna

be bad Just kind of thinking hey a lot of good

things are have been said and there's potential

here for this film to be good so I'm going in

with an open mind thinking hey this could be

something that I really end up you know ranking

high as I look back at this year's films but

like you said I just didn't really do it for

me on a lot of different levels and If you would,

if you're a positive person and you like to think

optimistically and positively about films or

if you liked this film, I would suggest skipping

ahead about 10 minutes because you're not going

to like anything that comes out of my mouth in

the next 10 minutes. I seriously have been trying

and trying and trying to come up with anything

redeeming about this film. Like the more I think

about this film, the more I hate it. Wow. I can

understand from maybe an artistic standpoint

why maybe some people would enjoy things that

they did as far as from a visual aspect. Outside

of that, I can't say anything good about this

film in any way. I don't understand the whole

being riveted I've heard this from multiple people

including Dan that they were like on the edge

of their seat the entire film now I get kind

of what you're saying Matt that you wanted to

pay attention to everything and you didn't want

to miss anything but I don't get the whole being

on the edge of your seat for something that's

long and drawn out as every scene was in this

film I was never like from the opening second

I was never excited about anything that happened.

I'm kind of like Matt in a way. I don't want

to speak for you, but I very much enjoy kind

of thinking and dissecting the writing of a plot

and of a story. I want to see the elements they

put in there. I want to see the twists and turns

they put in there. I want to see how they attack.

from a writing standpoint, whatever the topic

or whatever the messages that they're trying

to get across. I also very much enjoy dialogue.

And I'd like to see cleverly written lines or,

you know, the meaning behind lines and how they

construct the dialogue outside of I mean, the

writing is just a plot part and all that. But

also on the second level, the actual dialogue

that they put in there. And from those two standpoints,

you can't enjoy this film. Like, I really think

if you're if you're a fan of the writing of writing

in a film, this film's not for you. If you're

a fan of dialogue in a film, this film is not

for you. If you're a fan of, and I guess I'm

maybe in the minority here because I'm hearing

it from multiple people about the soundtrack

and the music and the score for this film. But

to me, my initial thought was if you're a fan

of that type of stuff, that this was also not

a film for you. A lot of people like the soundtrack

and the score and the undertoning musical themes

for this film. It literally almost made me want

to stop watching it. I can't take hearing that

same downbeat and the same things over and over

and over and over again ad nauseam in a film

and be excited by it. There was very little variation

on the score for me. Maybe I would need to rewatch

it, but that's not going to happen. I just, I

don't know. Like I understand and the people

are Dan compared it to 2001. um a space odyssey

which is another film i absolutely hate um but

i don't think the comparison is there because

i at least get the message that they were trying

to do in 2001 and here i just i just don't see

it as this deep intense message that will provoke

thoughts and debate and people to view the world

in a different way i don't see it i got the point

that they were trying to make almost immediately

And I don't understand why I had to sit through

two hours to see the same point reiterated time

and time and time and time again. I just, I see

nothing redeeming about this film. I honestly,

I've disliked films before, but I will usually

still advise people to see it because I think

people should see a wide array of films and everybody

should see everything and make up their own opinion.

I would honestly go as far to tell people don't

watch this film. And I don't do that about anything.

Like this is not just my one of my least favorite

films this year. This is instantly in my top

10 of least favorite films of all time. Wow.

It can. And I don't I don't I don't rank films

that aren't like actual major films. Like I'm

not going to say like, oh, Trolls 2 or whatever

is one of the worst films of all time, because

it's not a serious film to me. Like it's not.

I can't rank that as one of the worst films because

it's kind of built in that it's going to be a

bad film, so to speak. Like I'm not going to

take like a dollar Digivue film and rank it as

one of the worst films of all time. I only do

that with like major films. And this one can

sit right next to like a thin red line near the

bottom of my list. Also, the Dalai Lama movies

were all great. So I don't know, I guess I just

don't get it. I would like someone to explain

to me because I get that. The thing to say is

that this is a polarizing film and a lot of people

are going to like it and a lot of people are

going to hate it. But I still would like to I'm

not trying to say people are wrong. If you like

the film, you like the film. But I would like

a legit explanation as to what was there to like.

What is the big message that. Maybe I got the

wrong message because I got the message and I

got it again and again and again and again again.

Maybe there was something I missed. Maybe someone

seeing it on a different level or reading into

this in a way that I missed. And I would love

to hear what that is. And I'd love to hear what

makes this film good. I will disagree wholeheartedly

about the score thing from Dan. I don't understand

how you could rank this as one of the top scores

of the year, especially with things like Guardians

of the Galaxy and Grand Budapest Hotel and some

of those other movies out there, which were far

superior. Go ahead. I got two things. One, I

think I think the soundtrack is it's two things

to me. One, it was a very useful driving force

and a good tool in the movie and to entirely

unlisted and to unlistable to if you're not watching

the movie because it was it was repetitive and

annoying and. Like it was just all violence.

Like if I had to hear that with if I had no visuals

and I was just locked in a room and I had to

hear that soundtrack or that score over and over

and over again, I would commit suicide. It's

torture. But that's kind of the point. It worked

for the movie. Yeah. Yeah. Like it was supposed

to be so unnerving. Like, you know, I don't know.

I don't hate it. I could make a horror film and

make a score that completely fits that horror

film to me that doesn't make it a good score.

Yeah. Yeah. I mean, it serves the purpose that

you wanted to do it, but that doesn't make it

like a spectacular score. But maybe that's more

of a musical background. I guess I got to two

points about the score. One, I rarely notice

a score. So like when I do, it's usually amazing

or bad. And I don't know what my second point

was. Oh, the other one wasn't the score. It was

the story. Good. Which is I to me. A movie or

book or comic or whatever is good when I finish

it and I go, okay, I get it. And it's bad when

it ends and I go, how would I have written that

differently? Like if I immediately start going,

well, I could have done a better job, like then

I know it wasn't good. And I started doing that

30 minutes into this movie. Well, that's the

thing. Like I much more appreciate when a writer

or when a director has a message. and they find

a more subtle way and this is what surprised

me that Dan likes this film so much because he

usually likes subtlety and he likes not being

like heavy -handed and like smashed into your

face what the message is and that is entirely

what this movie does in my opinion. Maybe some

people argue that it is like the epitome of subtle

but I think it's the opposite. But I like it

when someone has like if a director or writer

has a message that they're trying to get to us

that they dress it up with other things they

hide it in things they you know, they make it

so it's something that you have to that you wouldn't

necessarily get when you watch the film. And

I'm going to use a terrible example because I'm

not saying that this film is great. But but like

take the Chronicles of Narnia series. I appreciate

that because there is obviously a very strong

undertone and you know, biblical message behind

that. All right. But a kid can watch Lionel Lewis

and the Wardrobe and not get any of that. They

can watch that film and seriously just see the

fantasy story that there is. But you can also

take something like that and dissect it and have

discussions with people about the different meanings

and the different things that the writer was

intending or what this was an analogy for, et

cetera, et cetera. I'm not saying that's the

best example to use that particular film. But

I like my messages to be more of that, where

you could just take it as a surface story value

and just be like, that was a cool story. Or you

can then look at the deeper meanings and look

at the different, like I said, analogies and

what that's supposed to compare to, et cetera,

kind of like Wizard of Oz does with the time

in history that it was supposed to be giving

a message about, which you could watch Wizard

of Oz and just say, hey, that was a cool fantasy

story and not have anything to know about the

difference as far as like the message it's giving

about the silver standard in the US and the different

economic things that the US was going through

at that time. You would not need to know any

of that, but it's there and you can delve into

it. And to me, I just don't like it when there's

a, when you have a message or you have an intention

and you go about it in the way that this does,

or, and then I guess that's somewhat of why I

don't like 2001 where you're just bashing it

and bashing it and bashing it and you're into

our heads and you have this message that you're

trying to like I don't know it seems like you're

trying to make it this deep artistic or I Don't

know. I just don't appreciate when people go

about it the way that this film goes about trying

to get that message across but Like Okay, so

I've been reading a lot of reviews on the book

because like I said, I think that the story is

interesting I think it was the medium and a narrator

would would help a lot So I was like, you know,

maybe I'll just get the book that it's based

on And you keep saying you get the message. What

did you think the message was of the movie? Like,

what do you think the director was trying to

point out? Well, for me, it's like I said, this

could be where I'm completely off. And maybe

that's why someone can correct me and show me

a different level that I completely missed. But

it's all literally in the title there. Talking

about. taking things at surface value, being

able to look past the surface or under the skin,

so to speak, how human nature acts. You know,

you obviously have the scenes of guys just physically

being attracted to a physical specimen and not

necessarily knowing what is under the skin and

knowing that the aliens there to the point where

they'll just walk into their own death because

they're, you know, attracted to the physical

part of that. And you can look at it just like

from I guess you can look at it at multiple levels,

where it's just physical being, humans being

obsessed with the physical part of what things

look like. Or you could look at it from, I guess,

from the alien aspect, too, as far as looking

at human nature and human race and not being

able to see how other forms of life could take

that or could. act themselves or how they would

interact. I mean there is, I guess you can take

a couple different things out of it, but that's

what I was getting out of it. What were you getting

out of from what you looked up? So the novel

is about meat farms. The book is more about she

picks up these humans and they take them to these

farms on these alien planets and they fatten

up the humans and treat them poorly in their

cages and then harvest them for food or whatever.

It's just a big ol the meatpacking industry is

terrible Even more heavy -handed And the character

has even less feeling then like it's like everyone's

like really know, you know I'm reading mostly

negative reviews because that's that's the way

I judge something is how negative the reviews

get um, but it's like a lot of people really

like the movie and that the book was too heavy

-handed and Well, and I guess I would have all

that makes me more mad that they didn't even

go to that angle that the book did. Yeah, at

least that would have been maybe a more interesting

thing to see because I'm already we're already.

Dealing, we already deal with that whole message

as far as the other stuff that I was talking

about, it seems like from every those types of

things are coming at us in a lot of different

ways and a lot of different mediums, whether

it be movies or books or episodes of TV shows

or whatever. As far as this and the stuff that

I was getting out of it So at least then it would

have been a little bit something different I

don't know. I just maybe like I said, maybe I

completely missed what you're supposed to get

out of this film But I don't wanna I've made

my opinions known so I don't want to beat the

dead horse. I guess I don't like this film What

about ratings Nate oh You want us to rate this

one in the theaters, but why not? It's a film

that all three of us saw it's a 2014 film Feel

like it's legit to rate it. I don't know I'd

rather watch this than Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Wow, that's that's the other thing like man.

I've seen some bad movies this year. I've seen

the first Hercules and Transformers and Teenage

Mutant Ninja Turtles and we had literally just

watched what was equivalent to a digivue movie

and this film made orc war look good Not really

good. Good's too strong of a word, but it made

it look like it was something more entertaining.

Yeah. I want to watch it again before I judge

it too much. What's your initial rating of it?

Probably like a two. Matt? Two. Alright. I'll

give it a half a star. Oh wait, we can do that?

Yeah, why not? Would I give me one yeah one because

you thought that was below it dang no stars I'll

give it a half a star and hopes that at some

point. I will be someone will Give me an epiphany

of what I've missed that entertain them so much

about this film All right, as far as coming attractions

coming out on Blu -ray, we have actually quite

a few 2014 things coming out on Blu -ray this

year. We have Amazing Spider -Man 2 coming out

this week. We have Jarhead 2, apparently that

happened. I did hear about that, I just ignored

it. Leviathan, Like Water for Chocolate, the

Quiet Ones, the animated special Toy Story of

Terror. But obviously - I did not know there

was a remake of Rosemary's Baby. Oh, yes, I forgot

about that. The big one obviously being Amazing

Spider -Man 2. I'm not going to necessarily buy

it, but I am looking forward to watching it again

to hopefully figure out what I missed as to why

everybody hates that film so much as well. Someone

should buy Sorceress and send it to us so that

I can see that because I want to see that. Action,

Adventure, Fantasy. That's something that we

would definitely watch. So send that to us. It

stars two Playboy bunnies, though. Oh, interesting.

I don't know man, but it looks like just the

look of the cover. It's got it's got a Red Stonia

style character, you know, like a chainmail bikini

with a sword fighting a snake and then there's

like I don't know. What is that a war friend

or a chimera? I can never get in straight and

a fucking monkey with a battle axe. I don't know,

man. It was awesome. If someone buys that and

sends us to him, we will we will. Review it.

It's $27 on Blu -ray. It's 14 on DVD. In theater

this week, obviously the big one would be Sin

City, a Dame to Kill for. We also have If I Stay,

When the Game Stands Tall, and The Prince, which

we had talked about the trailer last week. Apparently

that is already coming out here to limited release

August 22nd. So any of those that you guys plan

on seeing, Matt, Sin City? I'd love to see it.

I don't know. For some reason I haven't had the

energy to go out to the movies recently besides

Guardians Nate any interest to see Sin City?

Oh, yeah, totally Like like Sunday morning you

me. We'll do that. All right As far as credit

conversation from last week Obviously, we did

a kind of a dual thing number one with the TMNT

and the second at the tribute to Robin Williams

that we talked about And we asked, as far as

Robin Williams goes, what the favorite moments,

characters, performances, films, any of those

types of things from people. We got quite a bit

of feedback this past week about that, and a

little bit of feedback about turtles as well.

A lot of people agreeing with us on how much

a piece of garbage turtles is. So luckily, for

once, we're in agreement with most people on

that film being bad. Robin Williams' role for

super film Fan 98 was Fisher King that he mentioned

in Surgeon Cinema, Cinema, Cinema, mentioned

Goodwill Hunting, Film for Fun, Aladdin, Birdcage,

Goodwill Hunting. A lot of people saying it's

just nearly impossible to pick favorite Robin

Williams roles. Our celebrity friends, Freddy

Savage, Good Morning Vietnam, Man of the Year

and Goodwill Hunting. movie revolt dan chimed

in um saying that people should go see world's

greatest dad uh different side of williams that

he didn't always show in one of his best performances

um he also recommended i believe that's on netflix

too excellent and he also recommended a recent

episode of mark marin's wtf um it's a great podcast

i've listened to it a few times so i imagine

that's a particularly good episode Yeah, and

let's see what else here. Death to Smoochie from

Andre Walters, Dead Poets Society from Dragono.

Somebody was upset that we dissed on Zoolander.

That was me. I apologize. I like this from Brian

Jackson on Turtles. Honestly, this would have

been better if Michael Bay directed it. Shazam!

There's nothing good about this movie. See, he

felt like Turtles as I felt about Under the Skin.

And Turtles. and turtles and transformers goodness

i'm glad for things like guardians of the galaxy

and hercules and planet of the apes all right

anybody have a question for next week that is

not a question that's like when you don't start

uh with what is or whatever um I guess we could

be asking what people's opinions, because we

haven't got it, about this whole Power Rangers

thing. Are people actually excited about a Power

Rangers film? Because I know on the Geocast Radio

we do have a whole podcast dedicated to Power

Rangers. So is this something that there is a

lot of people interested for? Or is this something

that people are kind of eh about? I have never

been a Power Rangers fan, so I'm just interested

because you guys were saying that it would dominate

over Arthur. Nate, you said it would beat up

Arthur and the Bourne movie. I think you were

joking, right? I know. I hope he was joking.

Like, pretty much everything I said about Power

Rangers at that moment was sarcastic. What's

the best... How about this? People predict. What's

the best Power Rangers could do at the box office

opening weekend or overall? What would you expect

Power Rangers to do money wise? I mean, all these

other reboots do money, do mad money, no matter

what. What kind of money would Power Rangers

do? I'd be interested to see predictions on the

box office for Power Rangers. Well, it's going

on, what, like 2018? Yes. No, 2016. 2016. I would

say likely 35, but I'd love if it made 65. I

think you got to also like it's so far out, you

got to factor in inflation. OK, yeah, add five

million. It'll be up to 40 now. I don't know.

I don't even know if that's a film that would

make 50 million or not in two years. I don't

know if I could get that high, but maybe I am

completely wrong. Alright, let's start the hype

train for Power Rangers. Alright, thanks as always
