About this Episode

TFG1Mike and Jeremy Fine dive into three Image Comics first issues from late 2014. They discuss Bitch Planet, a women-in-prison sci-fi exploitation story by Kelly Sue DeConnick and Valentine DeLandro; The Fade Out, a 1948 Hollywood noir crime tale from Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips; and Rasputin, a dialogue-sparse origin story exploring the historical figure's mysterious powers and brutal family life. Each comic gets a detailed breakdown of art, storytelling, and first-issue impact.

Welcome to The Polebags Back Issue Classics.

Join us as we talk about comics from yesteryear,

from DC, Marvel, and more. So open your ears

to hear our discussion of the older continuities,

as the Back Issue Classics are also what's in...

The pull bag hello ladies and gentlemen and welcome

to the pull bag. This is yet again another back

issue classics This is the last episode of 2014

and we're gonna be doing something a little different.

We're gonna be doing image comics number ones

This is something where Something new I'm trying

to be able to check out new series from different

comic companies specifically image this time

around because they launched uh... or they have

had launched uh... at least one of these titles

is uh... fairly fairly old uh... let's see wow

yeah where is here we go yeah uh... the fade

out which is one of the titles will be talking

about uh... actually came out uh... in august

of this year But Bitch Planet and Rasputin both

came out earlier. Bitch Planet came out December

10th. Rasputin came out October 29th, so we're

a little old on that one. But joining me is Jeremy

Fine. Hello. How you doing there? Good, sir.

Pretty good. Pretty good. And yeah, at this point,

I'm going to start using these back issue classics

roundup kind of episodes to check out number

ones of certain comics and see if i really want

to stick to it instead of having to sit here

and dedicate time to reviewing or discussing

comics that i may or may not want to read after

the first issue so i think it's a pretty good

idea When did you first hear about Bitch Planet?

Was it when I told you about it? Or had you heard

about it previously? Well, like you, what I'm

trying to do now, I'm trying to diversify. I

mean, you know, my podcast is all about diversification.

So Bitch Planet, I mean, when it comes to Image

Comics... I just decided to go on a search and

find, you know, because with IDW, I listen to

some of the pullback episodes and I'm like, what

else can you tell me that I don't already know?

And when it went down the rabbit hole, I had

heard of Bitch Planet and I had skimmed through

it, but we'll talk about that in a little bit.

The one that I'm really impressed with is Fade

Out. Because because you know that that's classic

nor that I mean we talked about the thin man

a few months ago and I'm a huge fan of LA confidential

and the video game LA nor So I was glad that

they're finally bringing this in the calm book

form And then, of course, Rasputin. Well, I have

been a fan of this character, I guess, back,

you know what? I'll say it. Animaniacs. When

he had that bit part where they kind of made

him, you know, that famous magician from the

70s and 80s. That was made fun right? Yeah family

guy and then of course, let's not forget rescue

was in 1997's Anastasia Anastasia, so I have

been curious and then in a roundabout way with

Ghostbusters 2 Vigo he's sort of based a little

bit on Rasputin, and then finally we got Hellboy.

So yeah, I have been interested to see what a

Rasputin comic could be done by an independent

publisher, not just Marvel or DC, because if

you put Rasputin, Marvel, or DC, it's just gonna

be him fighting Thor or the Avengers, and that's

okay. But we kind of see Batman versus Dracula.

So I'm kind of curious where we could give him

a little bit more dignity. So image, I have to

say, between image and IDW, outside of Marvel

and DC, I've been really impressed with this

publisher. Yeah. I mean, image is my... Honestly,

it's... Probably my number two at this point

because DC has done so many things to just let

me down recently No, I'm being I'm being very

serious. They have done so many goddamn things

that have pissed me off or you know Let's make

Batgirl a teeny bopper Comic and blah bitty blah

blah blah and let's cancel Batman Beyond uh...

two point oh because hey we need to talk about

them and you rock we have whatever the fuck batman

go crap uh... but you know so idw image or my

top two companies at this point actually what

i was gonna say was i thought uh... dc was gonna

piss you off because we just found out that they're

canceling arkham manor what's when did we find

this out but you didn't i didn't you can get

to be there you get my fish Yeah, I found out

on Facebook there was a whole thing about two

weeks ago that DC is canceling a lot of series

in 2015. And after issue 6, Arkham Manor is going

the way to Dodo. They didn't say why, but there's

15 DC cancellations and yeah, Arkham Manor is

like on the chopping block. So far you and I

have only done the first issue of that we need

to do the The second issue and I know the third

issue just came out as well, but it's just DC

whatever but we're here to talk about image and

first one we're going to talk about is bitch

planet I'm basically going to read to you from

the image website what they say about the book

bitch planet the creators are Kelly Sue DeConnick

and Valentine DeLandro 2014 best writer eiser

award nominee Kelly Sue DeConnick from Pretty

Deadly and Captain Marvel, and Valentin Delandro,

X Factor, team up for the very third time to

bring you the premiere issue of Bitch Planet,

their highly anticipated women in prison sci

-fi exploitation riff. Think Margaret Atwood

meets Inglorious Basterds. You know, I don't

know if you remember the sitcom in the 80s on

Fox called Women in Prison. No, okay there there

was this well, I pretty much gave away the premise

it was pretty much one woman who more women one

woman who was Busted on a crime. She didn't commit

another one murdered her, you know It's supposed

to be like the female black token who murdered

her husband and gave like a who me type of face

It was a really bizarre show with canned laughter.

I think it lasted maybe a season and some change

But it was pretty much like any bizarre Fox sitcom

would be My memory is a little foggy, but there

were some memorable actors that went on to some

other things in the 90s if you ever seen like

dream on or You know news radio. They they kind

of transitioned from there. But my point being

is that this seems to be a popular thing. It's

not just porn as I've seen on Skinimax. There

were a lot of the 70s blackploitation women prison

movies. Usually you would have somebody who went

undercover to go in prison to get information

or avenger sister's death. But this one I have

to admit, even if we don't get past issue one

and we just go into issue two, I have to say

one thing though. I love the ink and paint in

this comic. Now print, I downloaded just the

digital, but it's well drawn. It's very well

done. I'm not sure about this one because this

is our second series from Image that you and

I have talked about that deals with naked women,

considering we have sex criminals to deal with.

but uh... this one i don't know it just kinda

you know i was looking through the the image

solicitations as they were coming i was looking

at the december six lists is it solicitations

i should say uh... and i was like uh... bitch

planet number one that sounds vaguely interesting

i'll give it a try and that's kind of what these

these number one uh... Not collaborations collections

collection type back issue classics episodes

are gonna be is Me and you or me and whoever

else wants to do it, you know taking a look at

potential new series from different publishers

or You know something like that to see if it's

something that we're interested in continuing

on with and you know So far in year two of the

pullback, I think I have pretty much expanded

the show beyond just being superhero comics.

I mean, we've talked Turtles, we've talked Transformers,

we've talked Dexter's Lab, we've talked Cowl,

Sex Criminals, Mars Attacks, we did Batman Month

celebrating 75 years of Batman. You know, and

at this point, I am more interested in original

content comic content or franchise content that

I like then I am Batman Superman any of the I

mean you and I did the Marvel Avengers and X

-Men number one and we will be doing the rest

of that coverage coming up in the second annual

Marvelous March in 2015 but it's like at this

point I want to I hate having to get attached

to, and it's my own fault, but, you know, getting

attached to a DC title and then, whoop, whoop,

sorry, you know, nope, you can't have that no

more, because it's not performing well, or it's

not selling well, or it's not doing this, or

it's not what we want to do, and it's like, I

don't know, it's just whatever. So, Image Comics,

Bitch Planet, number one. The cover is pretty

amazing. Are you woman enough to survive bitch

planet girl gangs caged and enraged dun dun dun

The poster I should say because that's what it

feels like for this. Yeah It's it's a poster.

It's not a cover to a comic. It's actually a

grindhouse 1970s grindhouse poster and you could

tell that writer Kelly and Art by Valentin, they

must have watched a lot of these 1970s Grindhouse

movies. And I know that they tried to make a

comeback in 2007 with Tarantino or Robert Rodriguez,

and unfortunately, Grindhouse didn't do its performance,

even when they tried to chop it up into two separate

movies. And it's a shame, because I really appreciate

the love of this cover i mean just look at the

colors of it you have the uh silhouette of you

know i guess her heroin she's in white in the

background you got all these pinks and purples

and you have on the lower left just like someone

just sitting there with a chair like with these

robot guards you're not too sure what it is just

just i'm just talking about the cover before

you read the book right, of course on the left

-hand side you see where says caged and enraged

and They're just like sitting around in a wrestling

ring and then on the top you have why these two

gladiator woman fighting Of course, you know,

I said this it's the three D's demographics distribution

and denominations the demographics I know are

gonna be for the NC 17 the the distribution I

don't know. You can't just put this in any comic

book store unfortunately or you have to put in

a certain section and denominations I don't know

how much money this is gonna make but I'm sure

with word of mouth it's not just gonna be a sexploitation

comic book I'm not sure how much money it's going

to make but the greatest thing about image comics

if you if you if your shop doesn't carry this

You can go to their website and buy it directly

from them in digital form in either PDF, EPUB,

CBR or CBZ. So I mean the digital price is $2

.99 from their website. So I mean, even at $299,

the cover price if you get a print version is

$350, but at least they offer you these four

different ways to get a digital edition. So I

really think Image Comics is taking the internet

by storm with how they are selling their comics,

because there is no other publisher. maybe IDW

possibly I don't know and I don't know anything

about Boom or Valiant or any of those but between

the big two you can't go on DC Comics website

and buy a digital edition but really you you

can't go on their physical website and do this

you have to have their app or you have to have

comics ology or something like that uh... the

fact that image comics actually does sell their

material on their own website is it just just

is amazing yes they they are the little uh...

publisher that could uh... so bitch planet we

uh... we open up and we see that we are on earth

and I wasn't sure what to think of this comic

when I first read it I got to the 10th page in

the guided view for Comixology and I'm like What

is going on here? It's the future. It's another

fucked up version of what's gonna happen in 3

,000 years from now. I love the billboard where

it says eat less, poop more. Poop more, less

of you to love. You know, here's the only thing

I'm gonna say. I'm tired of the future being

doom and gloom. I wish it was more Futurama.

But yeah, I mean, it's just people that I guess

are taking pills. where there's a countdown.

I wasn't too sure what they were going to make

of this, but it seems like we kind of have ED209's,

like, third cousin that went on a diet and is

hovering, which was nice, yeah. Actually, it

looks like a combination of ED209 and The Recognizer

a little bit. It's like Robocop meets Tron. old

god i i can't imagine robo cop in the tron world

uh... but i guess this countdown is for some

sort of radio gig or something more voiceover

gig uh... so it's like one of those countdowns

and we we see this uh... these uh... outer space

kind of things with with uh... with captions

and basically saying space is the mother who

receives us you see earth is the father and your

father has cast you out and again this is the

way that I this is one of the reasons why I love

the guided view technology on comixology because

it starts you off with all these panels and you

know it's it's going back and forth back and

forth when you finally look at it like in a single

page view it's just an amazing amazing page and

it shows you all these characters and all these

women various shapes and sizes for the most part

and these guys going back and forth discussing

them That's interesting to me. I love the fact

how we have these images where you just have...

This doccy almost reminds me of the movie The

Warriors. Like, you never see her... You just

see her mouth. Which is what I love but the little

of how these women are hooked up and it's like,

you know You've been cast out for your trespass

your gluttony your pride your weakness and your

wickedness and gluttony Of course, we have one

of my favorite characters BB big -born. I love

that. She kind of reminds me of divine from the

John water movies, but yeah, it seems like Past

her the rest of them at first. I thought they

were gonna go with the seven deadly sins They

have gluttony and pride and but then they just

go with trespass and weakness and wickedness

So we're not too sure why they're here and I

guess the countdown is not Because of what's

happening on earth because at first I thought

okay They're gonna be counting down to taking

medicine or something, but no I think it's just

that they're gonna be set up to Get into a shower

and be part of you know gladiator games And it's

you know We get to the title, Bitch Planet, which

I guess, you know, would be a great, cold opening.

I mean, this is an amazing comic. I mean, first

issue. You know, two pages in, we have this giant

spread of them, of the... Was it six? Yeah. Of

the six women. you know hooked up to all the

stuff and then we get the title and Just an amazing

amazing title and then we go into the rest of

the story and we see You know, basically they're

arriving at the prison You see this Automated

system woman. It's just it's just crazy. I know

this is gonna sound wrong because it's it's a

women's prison and all the women are naked but

uh it reminds me of synergy from gem in the holograms

yeah i was about to say that too it's synergy

gone bad yep pretty much uh... nicole would kill

us if we said that uh... i'll point this episode

out to her and she can make up her own mind uh...

but uh... so we have this going on this whole

coming into the prison thing reminds me of the

coming into the prison scene for shashank redemption

it really does you know coming in obviously in

shoshank they weren't naked but you know coming

in getting the uniforms you know going through

the processing of becoming prisoners um... and

i love uh... i love the uh... the born big chick

and she's just like uh... where where am i supposed

to put my other tent it's like oh my god If you

want to and I'll send you a copy if you want

This is great John Waters movie called female

trouble with the vine. It's awesome It's it's

this overweight woman that doesn't get cha -cha

heels for Christmas So she beats the crap out

of her parents is just like runs away and she

she becomes a thief and a shit kicker and it's

great and then she gets arrested because she's

murdered all these people and she finds like

death row to be the Oscars for and and that's

what this character reminds me of because it's

the same way she's just like running around and

cursing and screaming this is this is one of

my favorite characters so far like if we had

to do a countdown of favorite combo characters

I don't know where it's too early to put her

in the top 25 but I'd say between 25 and 50 she'd

be up there yeah I mean it's a It's a nice little

fun character where it's like, you know, I'm

not, you know, I am a bigger woman. These tiny

little petite uniforms are not going to fit me.

So she goes off and basically punches one of

the guards and a whole fight breaks out. What

do you think of the art so far? The the art is

like something out of a 70s comic It feels you

look at the facial expressions with Big Bourne

Especially with the panels like bitch I know

my size and the way that she's just like mouthing

off and you can see the side like but the mohawk

and you can even see But the officers wearing

like these face masks. It is and then of course,

you know There's the other panel where we see

her backside or you know behind sticking out

This is probably the most Realistic character

and then you can even see the emotion in their

eyes And it does a great deal of taking three

colors so far pink purple Actually four pink

purple white blue and green and making those

four colors work Absolutely. Oh wait. I'm sorry.

Then of course you get two more you got Yeah,

a little really, really dark gray. Yeah, see,

yeah, you got gray and you got white. Yeah, so

you got those colors and you make them pop. Yep,

absolutely. So, the guard subdues Big Bourne

and one of the other girls says, she didn't raise

a hand to you and now she won't. And the guard

says any questions and big Warren comes up says

yeah, where am I supposed to put my tits? She

punches the guard out She knocks the helmet off

of him. I love that. She looks like this uppercut

You can see like this is also great artwork where

it's like half the helmet has come come off of

him But you can still see like his lower mouth

and his chin Is that a male or a female? It looks

like a female to me. Well, it looks like he has

a mustache and you can't really see. Yeah, I

think they aren't male guards. Yeah. Yeah, that's

true. So the the the engineered doctor guy says,

what was that? Two minutes? I think we've set

a record. So they're taking bets on which one

is the innocent one and we find out it is a white

lady Says I do not belong here. I don't deserve

this. You have to help me, please crack No one

deserves this especially not after everything

I have done for you people So we go to some guy

who wants to speak to someone in charge and apparently

this is that lady's husband he wants to get his

wife back and saying that it's all a mistake

and the other guy is saying oh we have safeguards

well the safeguards failed and apparently what

this is showing us is that apparently earth is

Has become a police state pretty much at this

point because apparently there are so many rules

and you can't do this and you can't do that You

can't have apparently freedom of speech is gone

away kind of like um nowadays with Obamacare,

but You know again this this It's interesting

with the references of what we think is gonna

happen The future I mean we've had the novel

1984 There was even a Twilight Zone episode that

never made it to air called gentlemen be seated

where laughter was outlawed and I love the fact

that you've taken an old idea But you haven't

crammed it down our throats just yet with earth

being a police state I mean, this is nothing

new mind you it's just that this is a fresher

idea in comic book form But, yeah, instead of

having the typical, you've gone too far this

time, you have a guy that really doesn't have

any power, which is smart. And he even tries

to bring up Bitch Planet, but he gets cut off.

It's a colony. It's a planet. It's another planet.

It is not an installation. And I love the exchange

on the next page the next few pages after the

guy says isn't technology a wonderful thing?

The exchanges on the next page is between the

two of the doctors I guess So which one is it

white girl of course I just it just makes me

laugh that It's just so silly So Marian Collins

is the one that spoke up saying she's not supposed

to be there and they have this hard light Constructing

that we called synergy earlier and apparently

this thing can change into various Forms and

personalities and because of Marian and who she

is they change it into the Catholic one the Catholic

the nun uh... which is interesting i love how

they combine the uh... the light and the dark

in this book because they go to a point where

they say lights up and and that's when the the

the hard like concert comes through and it's

pretty much bright white with pink it's very

very interesting uh... so What do you think of

the the prison scene here where Marianna is stating

her name? Well again, it's your typical I don't

belong here and I love how they've you know As

usual they've shrink in the dialogue where it's

just above a whisper like she has no power and

she's feeling sorry for herself and you have

all the prison whispering and You have you know,

is she weak? Is she new fresh meat? I mean does

she think she's better than anybody else? He

you have all that but Thankfully, as I said,

it's a fresh I fresh take on a new idea, which

is not a bad thing. I like how it's set up. I

like how this really they're not really so much

as going after her. They're more concerned about

what they're going to do. You know, like like

how to escape the prison while Mary's being summoned.

So first, you know, like I said, in the beginning,

you have. You know, the guards talking about

her and synergy turning into, you know, I guess

from Nurse Ratchet to Mother Superior. And then

I love how you have the prisoners playing the,

you know, the telephone game about trying to

bust out. Then Big Bourne, she's kind of like,

well, how are we going to escape and how are

we going to hitchhike when we're on a planet

or another galaxy? Which is what I love. So it

takes a great idea of, you know, humor, suspense

and drama all in one. and just a few short panels.

So I definitely, I dig it all while Mary is trying

to state her case. And of course, you know, we

go back and forth, which is saying, you know,

I don't belong here and we have the husband and

they love each other and. Collins is being grilled

how we had an affair and Mary drove him to it

And and I and I love you know instead of split

paneling you you know you you break it up into

like these four by four panels It's like Mary

Collins marry your husband then you get synergy

then you get the guy interrogating and and then

of course He you know Collins really has no pull

because you can see in his face He's trying to

tell that he does love his wife He did have an

affair and he's being grilled by this seedy guy

I guess it's Mean Gene Oakland in a way. That's

what I'm gonna call him anyway. No, it's not

Mean Gene. There's no way in hell this is Mean

Gene. Mean Gene is too nice to be this guy. Well,

it's his, you know, evil twin from another galaxy

or another dimension. I mean, this guy, if he

had a top hat, he would be... Slightly whiplash?

Snydly whiplash, yeah. Okay, so we'll call him

Snydly whiplash. You know, it's a typical thing

where it's like, if you question the state, you

know, your ass is grass and you can just see

in this guy's face, like he's grilling Collins

about you having the affair. You're right, he's

ready to twirl the mustache. And, you know, Mary

is already being sentenced to God knows what

else because the last two panels are, I wasn't.

and then you know husband goes complaint which

means he was complaining he spoke at a turn and

you can see in her face you know she was devastated

and she had made threats about god knows i'm

sure she killed whoever her husband had an affair

with that's you know the opening assumption anyway

that's the opening assumption but that's not

what happens right but i'm just saying like if

you just read this for the first time yeah i'm

saying for anybody who's reading this for the

first time doesn't know what to make of it because

you think it's a stereotypical you know husband

had an affair wife went bad shit crazy and killed

of course that's not what happened but you know

is your typical futuristic well we'll make that

judgment for you you don't have to type of thing

and thankfully what saves it are the facial expressions

and what's in their eyes and they're more human

than they would be a comic book character. And

what I love also with, you know, mother superior

synergy is when she transforms into the nun.

She's a lot more judgmental. She's like, you

know, people don't end up here by accident, you

know, search your conscience, it's your conscience

that that forced you to come here. And then like

I said, when she says I wasn't her eyes are closed.

She's lowering her head. She's trying to convince

herself. You just see with her eyes, her eyes

pretty much tell the entire story. Oh, absolutely.

And because this is a number one, it just came

out this month in December, we are not going

to spoil what happens here for this particular

issue because you guys need to read this for

yourself. I'm going to say after the panels we

just talked about, which is the interrogation,

the confession, and all that stuff, what happens

is that they go through And they go through with

some sort of attempt at a prison break, and then

somehow something happens with the husband, which

I found a little strange, how the hell that person

magically appears. And we kind of end off with

our heroine of the piece going up against...

the people in the prison because of a death at

the prison. It's an interesting title. It's an

interesting book. It's not as heavy on the sexualization

of the characters as I thought it was going to

be. I mean, the first four, five, six pages,

yeah, we have nothing but naked women. um but

it's done tastefully the art is great uh the

story flows very well when i read through this

comic and i got to the last panel i'm like wait

wait what that that's it i want more already

you know you never get a second chance to make

a first impression and yeah this one worked yeah

this one really really worked i don't know how

long this one's gonna last i do know from reading

solicits through march that uh... march of twenty

fifteen we are at least can get four issues so

an image usually goes on with their series they're

not like dc where they'll do an issue or two

and then up at the back of the book we have uh...

uh... a letter from Kelly Sue DeConnick and we

have other things in here as well from the other

creators and workers on the book which is really

nice and interesting. I thought that was really

cool that they did that. But good were you say

you know what else I love too is that they put

in those old? Advertisements for the x -ray specs

like they put in that panel from the stuff like

you want to x -ray specs for a dollar or You

know protect your face, or you know the order

by mail stuff. You know yeah But yeah, I love

there's also um as we were talking about the

letters There's the but I'm not oppressed the

only thing I heard more more does feminism ever

matter anymore when i was taught gender studies

at large midwestern college you have to read

this i mean it's it's an interesting article

it it definitely takes girl power to another

another level absolutely uh... for me i'm gonna

give bitch planet a four and a half out of five

absolutely loved it i thought it was great there's

a a few little itty bitty things with with the

writing in the art that Just little nitpicks

that I have but other than that it was a great

first issue. What about you? You know as I said

I've been down this road so many times and I

was afraid they were gonna take an idea put in

the copier and I was gonna get a Hundred more

copies of the same thing and then after a while

runs out of ink or you know, it gets faded Thankfully

it does not and This one happens to be my new

favorite series that I'm going to definitely

subscribe to and I can tell you know I'm starting

to watch a little bit of anime here and there

and if I don't like the first episode I don't

want the series on my Netflix queue or my crunchy

roll kill and Have to admit it, you know This

is a nice gateway to other things what image

is going to offer Then I say well done image

it gets a solid five out of five for several

reasons One the colors you're taking simple colors

and you're making a pop and you're making a part

of the story Which is not easy at times, but

the colors are not distracting Which is a smart

thing to you brought in a memorable character

that I want to get to No more that I hope they

don't do anything stupid and kill her off, which

is good born and three I like the fact that you

have This typical I'm not supposed to be here.

I've been you know or a crime. I didn't commit

or whatever and you've kind of Reinvented the

wheel with it with the facial expressions and

the you know making these characters more human

that you give a damn about them So yeah five

out of five Alright, well, we are going to switch

gears and head into the 1940s in Hollywood for

the noir issue of The Fade Out. According to

Image Comics, this is the first project from

their groundbreaking five -year deal at Image.

We'll have Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips fans,

old and new, all on the edge of their seats as

they weave an epic crime story unlike anything

they've done before. Hollywood 1948, a noir film

struck in endless reshoots. are stuck in endless

reshoots. A writer plagued with nightmares from

the war and dangerous secret up -and -coming

starlets, suspicious death, and a maniacal studio

mogul and his security chief who will do anything

to keep the cameras rolling before the post -war

boom days come crashing down. The Fade Out is

the most ambitious series yet from the award

-winning noir masters. Bonus, this 40 -page first

issue features more story pages as well as exclusive

back pages. articles that are only in these single

issues so this came out as I said August 20th

this year I wasn't sure like like I said like

usually when I find a series that looks really

interesting depending on how many issues it has

I will go ahead and buy up to current. I haven't

done that with these. Obviously, Bitch Planet

just came out. Issue number two for Bitch Planet

doesn't come out until next month. The Fade Out

has been out since August, and I just now found

it. And it's pretty cool. I'm digging it. Drew

Baker, of course, wrote some Batman comics. And

he wrote one of my favorites that I pushed for

April 1st of 2015, Batman the Man Who Laughs.

If anybody respects 40s comics in the 21st century,

it's Brubaker. And hands down, I knew once I

heard it was gonna be Brubaker that was gonna

be writing this series, I knew this was gonna

be in good hands. And Sean Phillips also Is a

well -known name. He's also, you know inked a

few books besides Batman also the Cthulhu Chronicles,

which I love and you know, I'll get to that another

time as well as Stephen King's Gunslinger because

they took that and they made that into a combo

which I also would recommend and and the Marvel

zombie series, at least the first couple of the,

you know, series of that little arc. But yeah,

I knew that we were gonna be in good hands with

these two guys, and even the cover looks like

something out of a 1940s noir book cover. If

you ever got in your hands, like, if you've ever

been to used bookstore and Or been to your grandparents

and looked at their old detective books of the

30s and 40s This is a love letter to those covers.

I mean, it's a typewriter covered in blood and

It just like it screams like either they they

took a cover and they definitely they definitely

had to take a cover from one of the you know

books of the 40s mmm, and definitely like took

God knows how long to recreate this typewriter

image. Absolutely. It's kind of like what if

somebody murdered Angela Lansbury. Yeah. So we

have a cast of characters page here. We have

Charlie Barish, the screenwriter part -time reprobate.

We have Earl Wraith, movie star womanizer. We

have Valeria Summers up -and -coming starlet

we have Gil Mason hey what's um what's Metamorpho

doing here oh that's Rex Mason sorry one -time

writer full -time drunk we have Dottie Quinn

publicity girl and we have Phil Broski studios

head of security dun dun dun and this one opens

up with the wild party i love the art in this

book the colors are amazing how they're all set

up together uh between charlie being in the tub

in this first page and then you know him trying

to think back at what happened um absolutely

love it this is like somebody again found a comic

of the 40s and just cleaned it up and You know,

it's like or somebody found a manuscript It page

by page that with the captions with the narration

with discussion of you know war looming You can

definitely tell that this is somebody who lived

during this decade. It's amazing like like these

two, you know Brew Baker and Philips built a

time machine and went to the 40s and then came

back to our time. Oh Absolutely. I mean, I know

it's 1948. I know what you know, it's We're done

with World War two and I'm sure now, you know

that you know, there's gonna be the Korean War

and Yeah, you know the Cold War and you know

Vietnam, but it's still It's still interesting

That they're still scared of what's happening

next like who public enemy number two is gonna

be now Mm -hmm So we are setting is Los Angeles

fall 1948 And Charlie has woken up and doesn't

know whose house he's in Because of the wild

party and as he's going along he remembers different

things from the party this is really interesting

because he has to save his his he gets called

there by Jimmy one of the security guards to

save his buddy Gil who's a drunk and apparently

nearly punched out Bob Hope It's interesting.

It's a cool story. I think at this point Image

has really tapped the classic television and

movie era because they have this series and they

also have another series that we'll be trying

out at some point called Satellite Sam which

is based around a 40s and 50s TV show. uh...

so in his comics is gotten you know classic era

movie and tv locked uh... at this point of definitely

definitely david and they've been listening to

a lot of radio dramas as well but i also this

one of the panels that i love and we'll get there

when we get there but we're almost there don't

want to jump too far ahead but No, go ahead.

Okay. Well one of the panels that I really appreciate

of course you have to have that woman in the

red dress You know every murder mystery of the

40s. You know it's always that sultry That sultry

blonde And something has done her in and you

know our main character knew her But he was either

drunk or he was knocked out and he can't remember

and he has to retrace his steps But there's a

great shot or you know panels anyway of her smoking

a cigarette and when we get to you know like

the smoke is forming her body Yeah, like there's

a the details of Her holding a cigarette. It

seems like the cigarette smoke is is creating

her ghost and then all of a sudden It's like,

you know, we see our character. I think her name

is Val at this point Yeah, we just see like she's

dead or stocking has been torn. It's coming through

their dress But it's just a great image Of how

this woman is forming and getting back into his

mind to me. That was great artwork right there

oh absolutely because we have yeah we have her

smoking the cigarette and her putting it up to

her lips and then the smoke kind of invades the

image and he then remembers and he's like oh

oh shit Val and we see her in real life and it's

like wow So Val is dead, and now comes the cover

-up. He basically erases all traces of himself

being at her house. We then go to the Victory

Street Pictures studios, and we meet Dottie,

who is writing up bios for the stars. Yeah, Dottie.

Dottie! I don't know. She looks familiar for

some reason. She looks like a 40s version of

Peggy Brant. Actually, I was thinking more along

the lines of Roger Rabbit, Dolores. But yeah,

with the glasses. Yeah, I can kind of see that

a little bit, but Dolores is a hell of a lot

better looking. I guess I should have the glasses

off, but yeah. We have to have... this type of

you know his girl friday in a way you know the

s talker uh... victory street pictures i guess

it's kind of like with roger rabbit or any other

fictional you know l a big picture but you know

for legal reasons will call something else right

um... it's a good setup i guess i mean it it

doesn't slow anything down everybody's chain

smoking and You know, I guess dies, you know

Nice and playing off the characters and she's

okay Nothing great, you know, she's just there

for the sake of being I don't think she's filler

either but No, she's not filler, but she is there

to set up The studio characters the people that

will see in the studio. Yeah And she gets the

news of of Val's death and apparently Charlie

was trying to fill in the spots all night again

when he'd fallen asleep for a second time and

he has this weird dream with a bunch of blank

faces that start to morph and apparently Dottie

wakes him up And she says, my god, how much booze

did you drink last night? All of it, I think.

At least it feels like it. Idiot. So she tells

him basically what he already knows. And we then

go into the cover -up mode of, oh, it was a suicide.

And it was this. And it was that. And nothing

really happened. And it's a, you know. We're

behind in the picture and whatever else. I love

the art, though. The art's amazing. If you look

at the panel where it says, of course that's

not true, he may think of Dottie as different.

If you look at that panel, you look at the backgrounds

with all the buildings, and you look at the car

on the left -hand side, it's like, wow. They

really nailed the 1940s cars in this. They they

not only the cars but the apartment but the blinds

and the Sun barely coming through with the shadowing

Absolutely. Yeah, I mean this is this is I said

over and over again. I definitely love letter

to the 40s Especially the design of all the characters

You know the the buzz cuts I'm sure everybody

like swore like sailors back then I you know

I know people would talk differently or at least

when I watch westerns, but yeah, you know, I

watched a lot of 40s movies, Maltese Falcon,

you name it, I've seen it. I wish there wasn't

so much of the swearing because I grew up watching

Three Stooges and Mark's Brothers, but I'll take

it. I mean, it's no rocketeer, which is what

I guess I could understand, but I do love the

head of security though. He kind of reminds me

of... Oh, God. Death Romar from Sin City. You

know, the actor who played him. He was also an

Iron Man, too. You know who I'm talking about.

Yeah. But yeah, it's a great, you know, guy's

intimidating without being too intimidating.

Right, right. So as we go along here, we get

more of Charlie's flashback, and he flashes back

to the party again. You know, he talks about,

you know, every woman in America would love to

be at one of Earl Rath's parties or nights of

infamy. And it shows all this stuff. It shows

two naked women in the pool. It shows two women

kissing. It actually shows Val and another woman

kissing. And then we go to, you wanted to see

me. And he goes into Brodsky's office, who's

the chief of security. They talk about the whole,

like I said earlier, the cover -up thing and

how things are supposed to work and perception

and all this and all that. And he says, Chief

Steward, he says, you want to help? You can tell

me who else saw her at the party. You'll have

to ask someone else. All I remember is a couple

of big shots from MGM picking a fight with Flapjack.

Yeah, and I love how if we get back to the party,

of course, it almost looks like yeah with flapjack

You're right flapjack reminds you a little bit

of Sammy Davis jr. For some reason But I guess

it's the late 40s. So of course, you know racial

tolerance, you know, nothing's really changed

too much You know a guy being held down the other

ones being the tar out of this one We can see

the blood coming out of his mouth but again,

it's it's good imaging and I also love in the

background how We don't see much of this nowadays

with background characters But you can tell how

much is a love letter because in the background

you barely see the people's faces like you'll

see their pupils You won't see their mouths and

their noses You know, it's just like a dot today

every nook and cranny with the background character

has to be put in but here You can see while flapjack

has been you know Crab cake kicked out of him.

You can see like two women. They have no faces

So, as I said, this is definitely a love letter

to comics of yesteryear. Oh, absolutely. I mean,

they really nailed the time period and the feel

of what the time period is supposed to be. You

know, I absolutely love the art. Like I said,

the story is really, really good. We end up with

this whole starlet suicide thing. uh... and that's

been you know leaked to the papers and we kind

of uh... we kind of go back and i got a weird

vibe from the fact that um... gil is on the floor

in charlie's office thing and he's like hey sorry

about uh... that trouble last night it just i

don't know it it feels a little strange uh...

to me there seem to be some I don't think this

is intentional and I don't think this is what's

gonna happen and maybe I'm reading too much into

it but at first when Gil first wakes up it seems

like there's some strange goings on between Gil

and Charlie even though I know there's not at

least not yet anyway but it's just I don't know

it's just strange that he's crashing at his office

you know You have to have these backstories,

and you have to have these characters, and you

always have to have these... The problem with

most of these Norse, and that's if you've read

them, 90 % of the time you have somebody waking

up with a bad hangover. And you don't know why.

And we're introduced to a lot of characters,

and are they gonna be introduced to the story

or not? And we don't know. So... We're left to

assume. It's kind of like Scooby -Doo. Is that

person important? Is that person not important?

Does that person have a past that he's not? And

then they could just go away and it could be

a waste of everybody's time. And that always

pisses me off. I don't know where it's going

to go and I don't want to spoil too much for

people who haven't read this comic. That's only

giving like bits and pieces. I'm trying to be

as spoiler -free as possible. But the thing is,

is that It's an interesting character and I love

the flashbacks of how he's trying to Recreate

his past and we're seeing images of movies of

long ago for us You know the smurfs buckling

and the westerns and the gangster movies and

then of course we go to him crashing at another,

you know this guy's house and going what the

hell is going on and who are you and nothing

you know like I know we know who you are but

what's happened to you you've changed Gil and

we don't know why or what's you know you're the

best way to describe is not giving away too much

is that who are you what's going on I know you

you know me but now somehow you've changed why

yeah and that's the best way to describe these

Genre stories. So if you're a fan of this type

of Piece It's a good start and it's visual because

the problem is if you've read them in paperback,

they're not visual, you know I've read a lot

of them that I've had to put down and try to

visualize here. It's extremely visual Yeah, so

definitely definitely what the colors the lighting

the texture the mood pick up this comic. Yeah,

it's a damn good book and we will be continuing

in covering it. We're not going to give away

the ending to this one because it's an interesting

ending. I will say that it was nice that Brubaker

and Phillips wrote this long two -page kind of

letter introducing us to the series and talking

about That kind of thing. You know, reading these

comics, these comics specifically, Bitch Planet

and The Fade Out, reading them digitally, just

so I can read them a little bit better, I almost

want to pick up the print issues so I can read

the stuff in the back that has the letters and

that kind of stuff. So the final book, which

really... the only part we really need to talk

about is the beginning part because the rest

of it is nothing but imagery for the most part

until the monologue picks up but the final book

is Rasputin number one, released October 29th,

2014. According to Image Comics website, it says,

Dracula at Downton Abbey. In one night, Rasputin

was poisoned, beaten, stabbed, shot in the head,

drowned, and then tied up and thrown in a frozen

river. It was a really bad timing. His beard

was just coming in nicely. New York Times bestselling

author Alex Gratian and fan favorite artist Riley

Rossimo reunite for the first time since their

critically acclaimed series. proof. Now, I saw

this in the solicitations for Image Comics and

I was like, wait, what? They're really doing

this? Because to me, all as I know of Rasputin

is honestly what I learned in history class.

And seeing Anastasia, that's really all I know.

And, you know, Doc Brown, as the voice of Rasputin

in Anastasia, really paints a bad picture for

the character. Let's not mince words. This guy

was horrible when he was alive. You know, here's

the problem, and this is why I love... how Hollywood

likes to insult their intelligence. They somehow

took this character and put him in Animaniacs,

and they put him in a Don Bluth movie. You know,

they didn't talk about, and by they, are... My

teachers, at least, you know, did not talk about

Rasputin, and I don't know if they could. I mean,

after all, you would probably have to be 21 years

or older. And the same thing goes with Caligula.

I mean, I used to see the VHS in my video store,

but when I finally did sit down and rent it,

again, I was surprised he was even discussed

in a Pinky and the Brain cartoon. But when I

sat down and finally watched it, I was like,

how can they get away with pointless in a Steven

Spielberg cartoon? The thing is, Is that Rasputin?

Yeah. I don't know how you can even make him

into a nice guy or, you know, you can't make

him into a WWE wrestler. That's the first thing.

And this one, if it helps to talk about as a

backstory about who and what he is, that's great.

If you're gonna do it. Image Comics is the one,

as I said, knows how to do it right. And we're

gonna get into it. I mean, it is short and sweet

and to the point. The good news is, is that it's...

I will give away one thing right now. It is gonna

be 3 -0 for Image. Well, actually 4 -0, if we

count sex criminals. And you know what? I'm gonna

put my hat in the race. We definitely gotta talk

about proof. I did read that, released issue

number one. I am gonna request that down the

road. But... What do I think of this comic right

now? Well, I love how it's based on true -ish

events. Like, nobody seems to want to tell the

true story of this guy. And the cover again.

I mean, Image knows it's covers. We see... I

guess, like... Not so much of a silhouette of

Rasputin, but we see his head. It almost feels

like something out of a 1980s, you know, direct

-to -video VHS box artwork. That's what it feels

like, like I'm seeing a 1980s movie at this point.

And he's bleeding down his nose to his chin,

and the blood is, of course, forming on his logo.

And, yeah, I mean... The colors and artwork here,

I don't know what to think. It does feel like

something out of the 80s. Yeah, very much so.

So we've kind of gone from the 70s to the 40s

and the 80s. Not bad, jumping back and forth.

Yeah, not bad. We have... So we get to the inside

cover. We have Alex... I assume his last name

is Grecian. I assume that's how he says it. I

could be wrong. As the writer, we have Riley

Rossimo as the artist of the of the title, as

well as cover A. We have Ryan Stegman for cover

B. The only other place I've seen Ryan Stegman

is on Severe Spiderman covers, so it's interesting

to see him here. Nick Pitara did cover C. The

colorist is Ivan Placenta, or Plencia, and the

letter is Thomas Maurer. And this one pretty

much opens up with Rasputin basically saying

that his friends are going to kill him on this

night. And we see him with all these other people,

and he's going to be drinking a glass of poisonous

wine. I like the art. I think the art's great.

I think the characters are all great. What about

you? What do you think of the opening here? Well,

I love the characters one of them looks like

he belongs in an anime the one with the beard,

you know It almost looks like his beard and his

mustache or his mouth And then of course we kind

of it kind of looks like Commissioner Gordon

in a way standing over the maid like he's wearing

stilts I don't know why it just looks like but

well, that's his dead father. I know you will

come to find out Yeah, but I do enjoy that and

then of course Rasputin looks like he's wearing

like feathers or something it was hard to tell

with him but i love the drawings of these characters

and him sitting down ready to drink the wine

and of course as he's about to we go i guess

back to his past with the crow and you know siberia

of what he was like with his father yeah and

most of this is You know, the father asks him

if it's too much wood, and he says no, and he

says, good, keep up, and they're going through

the frozen wasteland. And there's no dialogue,

there's no nothing, it's just imagery of the

two of them walking through Siberia. We don't

get another... we don't get another really speech

bubble until they get back to their supposed

home and this woman has a speech bubble of a

log and a question mark and then the father just

throws it at her catch we come to find out this

is Rasputin's mother and it's basically a domestic

dispute at this point again i love the facial

expressions with this because he's it's almost

he looks like bluto and this is olive oil you

know the domestic violence years yeah and he's

towering over her and he's laughing that he threw

the wood in her face and like catch and we see

her going from these panels from like you know

feeling weak to her her just snapping and giving

the scowl and one of her eyes is you know blackened

and then like rolling her eyes and spitting at

him and it's all just holding images and then

he's about to hit her and she goes no but she's

not it's like no don't like she's ready to fight

back and he socks her and pretty much you can

see the blood splattering and he's killed her

with one blow and then Rasputin tries to fight

back but he's too weak and then his father just

like walks over to this, you know, stove and

pours himself some soup and he's eating and he's

just eating and we could just look at this dead

woman's eyes still open looking at us. He picks

himself up when he's done, he walks out. Rasputin

finally talks to his mother and he's able to,

I guess, bring her back to life. Kind of. He

brings her back to life and I don't know, it's

a little strange. He brings her back to life

and then he goes back out with his father His

father has an axe and a fish and we see all that

and we see that The father has to go up against

a bear The father kills the bear but Rasputin

once again brings it back to life And the bear

pretty much kills his dad well, here's the thing

too is that the way that this fight you know

starts is that it's more image you know there's

no dialogue it's after he's brought his mother

back to life in a way she does say oh my poor

kakori and she pours soup for both of them very

speed and then goes back out apparently his father's

killed these two mudfish or you know, whatever

it is in Siberia. And he's offering Rasputin

a bottle of alcohol and, well I guess in Siberia

it should be vodka. The bear comes out of nowhere

and eats the fish and it roars and then his father

roars back at the bear, it's like, you don't

take my fish away from me. And the bear has his

claws, Rasputin's father has the axe, he's just

slashing the bear and Rasputin just sees like

his father's attacking a bear with an axe. The

bear then is trying to get away and Rasputin's

father still wants to kill this defenseless bear

and that's when Rasputin just like walks over

to his father the bear and then he brings the

father you know father's bear back to life you

know his kill back to life and all the father

can say or you know it's a skull that comes out

of his mouth I guess a speech bubble whatever

the bears brought back to life And then, I love

this, there's a stare down, it's like, you have

Rasputin with the one blackened eye, and the

bear looks at him, and the bear just walks away.

And then, you know, we see the dead body of the

father, and Rasputin takes what's left of the

fish, and he looks, we have this huge image of

the father, it's like, my middle name, I hope

I get this right, Ethonach, means that I am the

son of Elfen. And the father's pretty much dead.

And then we go back to Rasputin where, you know,

his father's standing over him. Or at least the

ghost, anyway. Yeah. F .M. Rasputin, my father.

Some people toast to long life or good health.

They pray for spiritual guidance or wish for

one last word with the loved ones. Some people

have no idea. and we close and Rasputin drinks

the wine and it just kind of leaves it off there

overall I thought this issue was weird the beginning

was cool it was interesting it was great I still

don't know if I can root for a character like

Rasputin because it in the back pages of this

comic we have Alex Gresham uh... writing a little

alex riley and i've been writing letters uh...

to the reader about you know why make a comic

about russia's madman grasp you and they go on

to explain it now let people go ahead and read

it when they you know when they when they get

the comic book it's just i don't know it's really

weird for me reading something like this you

know i grew up reading DC tales in the crypt

vault of horror and haunted fear comics and The

gore factor alone Was insane. This is tame compared

to what I read with those horror comics. No,

it is it is very tame I'm not complaining about

the gore at all. I'm just complaining. I'm more

so I'm conflicted about how I should feel about

this character because we've known him to be

a sadistic asshole in the past right and and

that's my other point because my second point

is is that are we supposed to care about somebody

that we know a lot about and is this supposed

to be a biopic is this supposed to be the finally

you know we're never gonna get a movie version

done the right way because as I said he's either

been a comic book villain in Hellboy or you know

he's been on Tiny Toons like like are we ever

gonna get the real story and do we want the real

story and I don't know how I feel but I will

say one thing comic books are supposed to have

dialogue and conflict and good versus evil but

here it's a great dialogue less just seen images

of Rasputin's father beat his mother, Rasputin,

using his powers. We don't know how he's gotten

them yet. And him then seeing his father wrestle

a polar, you know, not a polar bear, but a grizzly

bear. And then Rasputin, you know, bonding, I

guess, in a way with that bear, we can see also

when he has that, you know, once he brings the

bear back to life, the right side of the bear's

eye is now green. I don't know if that's gonna

be as familiar or whatever, but I am conflicted

too, but you know what? It's an interesting story,

and it's enough for me to say, okay, you had

my curiosity, now you have my interest. I wanna

see what issue two takes me. I usually will give

this like another two or three issues before

I say, thank you, good night, sir, but I'm gonna

give this, I'm gonna give all three. Five out

of five and I definitely I'm gonna give this

one a second chance. I love the Dialogue less

images. I love the colors and I love the mood

The only thing I don't like are the bookends

to this story and the bookends are him sitting

down to drink the wine Mm -hmm, because I don't

I I feel that if they would have taken out him

sitting down talking to these people And then

showing him drinking the wine I just think they

should have taken those pages out and shown them

later. I hate flashbacks, but it works. Yeah.

I think for me, and I forgot to rate... I know

you said you were going to rate all three of

five. I forgot to rate the fade out. The fade

out, I'll give a four and a half. I do really

like it, but at the same time, I just... And

I just need to know more about it. I need to

read more about it with this one, though. I'm

interested. We are still going to probably cover

this, but I gotta give it a three and a half.

I just, I don't know how to feel about this because

I mean, yeah, a picture is worth a thousand words

and without dialogue, it does work here, but

it doesn't really, like, I wish there was some

sort of monologue. for him like what he's feeling

as he's doing like you know you said you wanted

you know we we haven't got the explanation of

how he got his powers well they could have used

this time to explain by him doing an internal

monologue explaining how he can do what he can

do um i understand why it wasn't done that way

but i just wish that it would have been because

it just it would have made it a little bit better

for me um i am still interested issue two is

out now so we will probably be covering issue

two at some point i don't know exactly when but

um overall i mean these three new series from

from image i really am digging them i think they're

great i think they're great too and image Next

to IDW, well played, sir. Really, well played

with this series. I mean, I have read Boom and

Blue Letter and some other independent series,

but they've seen to just fade off into obscurity.

I think the only one that saved one of those

independent is that Adam West wrote a comp book

and only lasted about 16 issues. And unfortunately,

I don't know what happened and it just like died.

Image seems to be coming. It's more of the grown

-up feel without being too racy. It definitely

respects the reader's intelligence and it doesn't

insult it so I have to say it's more of that

grown -up feel for a comic book series and as

I said I can't wait to see what else image has

to offer So well, yeah one day if we ever get

around to it, I definitely want to read, you

know discuss proof with you Yeah, absolutely

It's just such a great I mean these series all

have a really good start to them and Like I said,

we will be doing future coverage and seeing what

these series are like in a little while At the

end of the last Bag Issue Classics, I pretty

much gave everybody a hint as to what's coming

up for the pull bag in January. I'll do it again

one more time since this is the end of the year.

In January 2015, we are going to be having...

Angel's smile time from IDW, Batman Beyond 10

,000 Clowns, and Batgirl Beyond. Joe Reed and

I are going to do the first comic series, which

is the news section for the year three of the

podcast for TMNT 90. And then we'll be doing

TMNT Issues 41 -42, which is the first two chapters

of Attack on Technodrome. And then hopefully

Ada Sperrin and I can do Masters of the Universe

2013 ongoing issues 13 and 19. uh... so that's

what's coming up inside of the pool bag uh...

what do you get uh... going on over and i don't

cast well we already finished up season one with

king kong forces godzilla but i a m uh... going

to be releasing some holiday seemed episodes

in one month from uh... didn't jake a classy

punish your body count join me for uh... commentary

on scrooge and i'm also going to be discussing

the santa's slay and uh... team america world

police because north korea decide to pull the

interview and then we were going to get team

america in its place and that got pulled so i

figured i'd discuss that white white what the

big deal about that movie is and then of course

uh... why will be back with me in january with

season two uh... howard duck apparently is one

of his way back into marvel so we're going to

be finishing the seventies comics that were made,

you know, before Gerber passed away. And then,

of course, we're going to be treading anime territory,

some good anime, Attack on Titan, the original

Astro Boy. And I'm already going to discuss what

we're going to be doing for this summer because

Mad Max is coming back in a way. So we're going

back with a Mad Max retrospective as well as

the Omen. because it seems to be everything is

post -apocalyptic again so and then i'm already

gonna give away season two for next year we're

gonna be going ape we've discussed godzilla we've

discussed king kong versus godzilla but we haven't

discussed king kong so next year we will be discussing

all the king kong movies plus since we finally

gained episode seven we're going to be discussing

all the star wars movies including The Clone

War movie and as well as the Ewok adventure battle

of Endor and yes even the holiday special Don't

it's not worth it. Oh whip and stir and stir

and whip. Yeah, it's the the star wars holiday

special is not worth covering it really isn't

it's all in the walk nobody can understand it

it's all in looking in will look to speak i'm

sorry you know it's all in what you see no one

can understand the damn thing i don't know i

don't understand why the fucking thing was ever

made but uh... to get back to comics image comics
