About this Episode

TFG1Mike and Dave McElvenney discuss DC's five-issue miniseries following Krypton's last survivor as a dog navigating Earth. The story unfolds primarily through visual storytelling from Krypto's perspective, beginning with his crash landing and encounters with Lex Luthor, a homeless person, and a girl he saves. The series culminates with Krypto meeting young Clark Kent and the Kents on their farm. The hosts explore how the series updates the Silver Age character through a modern lens, examining the lack of thought bubbles, the artwork's role in conveying emotion, and Krypto's journey discovering his powers and finding his place.

Yeah, I can see where landing a plane in the

middle of the city might turn a few heads. It's

not just that. Suddenly people are calling me

Superman. They want to know everything about

me. Some are even afraid of me. Just like Jor

-El and Lara warned. Does this mean I'm going

to have to give up my life? No, son. It doesn't

matter where you were born or what you can do.

You'll always be Clark Kent. Superman just helps

out now and then. Still, it wouldn't be bad if

people knew a little more about Superman. I don't

want anyone thinking you're like that nut in

Gotham City. This is Kevin Conroy, and I am the

goddamn Batman. You've just jumped inside the

pull bag. Join TFG1 Mike and the rest of the

comic crew here at the GCRN as they make their

great escape into comics. From DC, Marvel, and

Image to IDW, Boom Studios, and Xenoscope, we

have everything right here. We cover things like

Transformers, He -Man, Super Heroes, TMNT, and

Radiant Black. Yeah, we have all that and so

much more. It's all inside the pull bag here

on the Geekcast Radio Network. So without further

ado, it's time to talk about the comics we're

reading right now here inside the pull bag. Hi,

this is Kevin Conroy, and you're listening to

the Geekcast Radio Network. Snap out of it, Ken,

or Joker gets the last laugh. Keep your heads

down. You've just jumped inside the pull bag.

I'm, of course, TSU Mike. And today's featured

guest is none other than Mr. Dave McElvenny.

Hello, sir. How are you? How are you, Mike? Pretty

good. Pretty good. And today we are featuring

on the podcast, DC Comics and their five issue

miniseries, limited series, Crypto, the last

dog of Krypton. Oh, boy. Yay. I had seen when

the first issue of this was coming out. I'm like,

what are they doing now? How are they? And you

said off air. There is not a lot. There's some

dialogue, but it's mostly visual. storytelling

in this because it comes from the dog's point

of view and obviously crypto is even though he

has the same powers as clark and superman he's

not a talking dog so it's not like he can you

know speak english other than wolf wolf wolf

yeah or whatever but uh But yeah, no, I was excited

for this. I thought this was going to be, pun

intended, super fun. This is part of their all

-in series because DC is doing that all -in thing

because that's the name of the current New 52,

blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, whatever the next

name of the whatever. Yeah. It's interesting

to look at this from my Silver Age perspective

because, I mean, I love crypto. Yeah. But this

feels weird to me in several ways. Okay. Why

does it feel weird? Yeah, well, I mean, beyond

just the fact that there is literally almost

no dialogue because it's people talking to the

dog. Right. occasionally people talking to each

other, but not very much. So there's that. And

then you kind of have to almost infer what crypto

is thinking. Yeah. Like in the Silver Age, crypto

would have a thought bubble, you know? Yeah,

he would, wouldn't he? Yeah. So that the reader

could know what he was thinking. But here you

kind of just have to get it from the artwork

more than anything else. Yeah, I didn't think

about that. You could have added a thought bubble

for crypto. Huh. Well, that's probably passe

nowadays. Yeah, it probably is. Go ahead. Sorry.

There's a lot of people in, I don't know about

the industry, probably some, but certainly in

the fandom who kind of look down on what they

call the Silver Age silliness of like a dog thinking.

Complete thoughts in English, you know, so I

kind of understand that they didn't do it. But,

you know, it would in some ways it might make

the story a little easier to to figure out. OK,

so remind me, because even though I'm younger

than you, I still feel old. Remind me. Wait till

you're my age, sonny boy. Yes, sir. Yes, sir.

Uh, remind me, what years does the silver age

cover? Basically I would put it, uh, late fifties,

like maybe 58, 59 to maybe 1970, maybe a little

bit later. It's mainly focused in the 1960s.

Okay. All right. Perfect. The reason why I ask

you this is because in 1969, they introduced

Scooby -Doo, a talking dog. So here, this is

my comeback to your thought bubble thing. You

still could have the whole silliness thing. 1969,

they introduced a talking dog on a cartoon. And

I get it. This is a comic book, not a cartoon.

And don't get me wrong. I didn't even think about

giving crypto a thought bubble in this five -issue

series. As I was reading this, I was just kind

of like, oh, like every panel that we will go

through here that we will talk about, I kind

of like inferred everything that crypto was going

through, like when he was sad or when... Things

happen to him that we will get to that. And I'm

going to go through every part of this, where

the editorial gives you, I love that they gave

us warnings. Absolutely love that. They gave

us warnings. Yeah. I, I wasn't sure how they

were going to do this because of how this story

is, how this story starts, like the first two.

Is it two? Yeah, it's two issues. And then the

third issue is okay. Yeah. But. No, I mean, the

whole silliness factor, I didn't even think about

giving crypto a thought bubble, but now that

I'm thinking about it, when he would have a thought

bubble way back when in the 60s or whatever,

that would be genius, and that would be fine,

and it would be whatever. And here, if he had

a thought bubble, it would just be like, because

he's so confused, because he's on Earth now,

like his whole spaceship thing. I don't know,

but... Neither here nor there. It is what it

is. I'm going to go through the creative through

each issue. But in the first, I'm pretty sure

it's pretty much the same creative throughout

the whole thing. So if it is, I won't go through

each issue. But for issue one, Ryan North is

the writer. Mike Norton is the artist. Ian Herring

is the colorist. Lucas Gattoni. I hope I'm pronouncing

that correctly, Lucas. If I'm not, I'm sorry.

He's the letterer. Jay Lee and June Chung did

the cover. Dustin Nguyen did the variant cover.

Sabrina Futch is the editor, and Katie Kubert

is the group editor. We open with Crypto. He's

a good dog. He's fast asleep in his little Krypton

bed, and as he's waking up, it's basically just

all the experiences you would experience if you

were a dog. just stretch and this and that and

either Jor -El or Lara call him and he goes out

to the kitchen and does breakfast and everything

else. Man, what a dog. He's living his best dog

life. And this is essentially life on Krypton

through Krypto's eyes. Because Kal -El is still

a baby. I mean, I don't even think, do we even

see, we don't even see Kal -El. Okay, we do.

But the first three or four pages, it's all Krypto.

And then we finally, when they put him to sleep.

he is sleeping with, with Kal -El. Cause he's

all like, I might even make this, this final

couch page here where he's like curled up next

to the baby. I might even make that the, the,

the podcast art. Cause that, that's so cool.

Well, we've got in, in like when, after crypto

wakes up, you've got Jor -El holding baby Kal

-El. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. I missed that. Yeah. It's

funny, I have to make a comment about Jor -El.

The beard I'm not keen on, but again, Silver

Age. The sort of Saturn -looking emblem on his

chest is kind of a throwback to, I want to say,

the Golden Age or very, very early Silver Age.

Because occasionally you would see pictures of

Jor -El with that kind of symbol on his chest

instead of the big sunburst. Okay. That he had

through most of the Silver Age. So I thought

that was kind of a neat, you know, I don't know

if it was a deliberate callback or they just

wanted to get away from the sunburst emblem.

Right. But I thought that was kind of cool. I

like that. Yeah, the art in this is great. And

I like that this is a, it's not, it's not right

at the end. It's not like they're testing. We'll

get to this later in this issue, but. They're

testing things, but it's not completely at the

end of the planet's lifespan. It's not Marlon

Brando Jor -El. It's not old Jor -El. It's basically...

I don't want to say it's 1996 animated series

Jor -El, where you have Christopher McDonald

voicing the character in the Superman animated

series cartoon, but it's a young Jor -El. I think

it's cool. I think it's great. I don't... see

any issue with it here because you have a young

mother and father taking care of their kid and

their dog uh if it was old marlon brando i would

probably have way more problems with it then

then uh yeah yeah and and unlike pretty much

any origin story you see for either Superman

or Krypto, I guess, you do not see the destruction

of Krypton at all in this miniseries at all.

No, you don't. Which is kind of nice. Yeah. Because

to run ahead really quick here, like I said,

they're testing ships. They're testing things

to see if they can get people off -world because

of the tremors and this and that and the other

thing. And whatever else. Because they know something

is happening. They just don't know what yet.

And they're working on plans and things. So you

have that hint of the planet. Something might

happen to the planet. But they don't specifically

show it to us. They don't do whatever. And it's

nice. Finally, something that actually doesn't

show us what we've seen. 19, what was it? 39

was Batman. 38 was Superman. So 38, 26, almost

the last. God, what's the math on that? 90, wait,

70. 2026, 1938. So 88 years. Yeah, 88 years.

So almost 90 years. So, yeah, so finally a comic

book that doesn't actually do what we've seen

them do. For the last almost 90 years. And I'm

sure. Not all comic stories. For Superman have

shown. Hopefully. Not all of them have shown.

The blowing up of the planet. But again. The

focus here is crypto. And I think that's why

they didn't show. The. As we get further. The

testing of the rocket. Yeah, he never, even in

the Silver Age, he never experienced the destruction

of Krypton because, you know, he was off planet

before Kal -El was. Yeah, absolutely. So they're

testing the rocket. The rocket's working well,

and he's having a blast, literally, and he gets

rattled because of this wormhole and the wormhole.

Does all kinds of funky stuff. And I love all

of the dog's facial expressions. This is where

the inference comes in, folks. This is where

probably a thought bubble would work. But you

can clearly tell just by his face. The page where...

That's another thing. On PDFs of this, I wish

that they would put page numbers. But where...

It's the one where they say, there's no time

to upload a new course. So it's that page. Yeah.

The second panel, you kind of see him with his

tongue stuck out. The other panel, he's going

in deeper. And then the third panel down where

you're a good dog and you're the best dog. And

it cuts off. You see just the fear. So you see

that. So we can, like, I don't necessarily. Again,

until you mentioned it, I didn't even think that

they were going to put thought bubbles next to

crypto. Because this next page where he's going

deeper into the wormhole, where at the top, the

three panels where he's sitting, and then he

goes into this red blanket. I'm going to call

it the Superman blanket. He lays down, curls

up, and closes his eyes. It's like, this dog

knows that he's in deep shit. Like, he knows,

like, oh, man, I better just lay here and just

wait for the thing to stop or the thing to do

whatever it's going to do. Because he's a dog.

He can't pilot the ship, you know? And, yeah,

and it crash lands on Earth. I'm assuming it's

Earth. Here's the other thing. Like, sometimes

comics used to do this. I don't know, three,

four, five, six, seven, maybe 10 years ago. This

next panel would tell us the readers like somewhere

at the top left or bottom left earth. 1970 or

earth 1980 or earth like it was just a little

thing doesn't have to like this is an amazing

photo this is an amazing splash page kind of

thing here with the rocket coming in but you

would at least have something a little thing

to tell the readers like at what point in time

and or where this is because this could be anywhere

i mean we obviously know where the story is going

but like come on people Yeah, and you also don't

know, like you said, you were giving dates. You

don't have any idea when this happens in relation

to when Kal -El reaches Earth. Yep, exactly.

And later stories don't clear that up either.

Nope. So the ship crash lands into the water.

Crypto wakes up because he hears the... autopilot

say pod opening and um he practically drowns

like yikes because i guess the did the pod sink

i think it did yeah i think it opened probably

underwater because you see him coming okay right

yeah yeah That's interesting, because where it

says pot opening, it looks like he's still on

the blanket, but it kind of looks like a raft.

And then all of a sudden, he's treading water,

and then he's... Huh, that's weird. So he gets

out of the water, and there's a nice little nine

-page, or eight, nine, not nine -page, nine -panel

kind of split there. And we see that we got 50

miles to go to Metropolis. Oh, boy. That's a

long haul right there. And you have to wonder,

because does he even know he's got superpowers

at this point? I don't think so. Because it's

nighttime. It's like the sun already set. Yeah,

but he would still be super on Earth. He would

have super strength, at the very least. But,

you know, obviously he just thinks things are

normal. So he sets off walking at a normal dog

pace. Yeah. Because it's quite a long while into

the series before you see him even fly. Yeah.

Before you see him fly, before you see him use

the heat. When he first used the heat vision,

I was like, okay, Crypto, good dog. Like, I was

like, oh, my God, Crypto. Fire in his eyes. Like,

let's go, boy. So he goes walking down the street

and looking for stuff in the alley, runs into

a homeless guy. Stupid dog. That's my food. And

the homeless man is not so nice to him, which

I think is absolutely wrong. I get it. In my

lifetime, I've been in several homeless shelters

and things like that. So I understand that. level

of being that low but like that dude like they

i get it they're showing different people how

different people treat the dog but i don't know

yeah especially his first friend in this issue

we're gonna get there yep we we definitely gonna

get there because yikes so He jumps through or

over the fence. He runs in front of a lady, runs

in front of a car. Damn, dog, you trying to get

me killed? He runs through some people. Easy,

boy, easy. Good dog. It's okay. You're lost,

aren't you? And you're hurt. Poor little guy.

Nobody loves you, do they? It's okay. We can

be friends. And don't worry, I can protect you.

I'm like, okay, like I already knew where this

was going because I obviously read the solicitation

and I knew what the story was going to be. But

hitting that next page, I'm like, oh, hell no.

I'm like, oh, hell no. Yeah, it's not the person

you'd want to meet crypto. Hello, dog. My name

is Lex. What's yours? And I'm like, oh, hell

no. oh hell no and that's how the first issue

ends i'm so glad i did not read this i'm so glad

i waited up until we're doing this now whenever

this episode is going to air because i don't

know when it's going to air but oh my god if

i was reading this is why i don't read comics

monthly and the trade paperback for this has

not come out yet we are covering this through

the five single issues that it is but uh oh my

god I would have been shaking in my boots, worried

about crypto for the next 30 friggin days until

issue two came out. Oh, I was. Trust me. I got

these issues when they came out at my local comic

shop. So I got to that last page and I'm like,

oh, no. Yeah, that's not good. First issue, overall

thoughts. What did you think? Good, bad, ugly,

all that stuff. Like I said, it. It felt weird

to me, but that's a me thing, because my Silver

Age sensibilities, because that's what I grew

up with. But I thought it was a good first issue.

As I got through, as I got into it, I did like

the idea that crypto didn't have a thought bubble.

That was my first thought. It was like, we know

crypto can think, but I don't know if... the

modern day version of crypto thinks in the same

way that the Silver Age version did. And I thought,

okay, they're trying to update the story as if

this was just a dog with kind of a dog's mind,

whatever that is. And all he knows is what people

say to him and what he can figure out. Because

obviously he doesn't start out knowing English

because he's not from... any earth speaking place

yeah but yeah so you get to see kind of this

journey that is going on and this is the beginning

of the journey it was it was shocking to see

lex at the end because i would not have thought

that's the first person who's going to find crypto

and you know like no i would i i would think

you know again going back to my silver age brain

you know clark is going to find him as he when

he's a young boy But no, that's not it. Yeah,

no, that's not it. And so, number one, I knew

this was going to be a five -issue series. Number

two, I knew this book was going to be, because

I read the solicitations every month that this

came out, and I think the only solicitation,

I read the first three, issues one through three,

so I missed issue four and five. I'm kind of

glad I missed issues four and five solicitations,

because four and five were a total surprise for

me. But I knew it was going to be Crypto and

Lex for a little while, and I was just like,

oh my god, Lex Luthor is going to turn this dog

evil. Lex Luthor is going to try to basically

turn him into Evil Ace the Bat -Hound. In that

one episode of Batman Beyond, they tried. Maybe

I'll get a lead on Ace from him, too. What do

you got for me, Matty? Over here, Mr. Boxer.

Got a litter a couple of weeks ago. Saved the

best one for you. Look at these mitts. Gonna

be huge. A mangler. After I get through training

him, he will. Take care of the paperwork. Don't

I always? Nice neighborhood, eh? Not really.

It was a joke. Stop here. Here? You sure you

got the right address? Yes. My parents were killed

here a long time ago. You can stay in the car.

All right. Thank you, sir. Got your tanning bomb

here. How about a little Christmas cred? Charlie

Boxer had a dog fighting ring, and Charlie tried

to turn Ace evil in that episode. Didn't work,

thank God, because Ace is Ace, and Ace is awesome.

But literally, that's what I thought when I,

before I had ever, because today is the first

time I had ever read this, because I was not

reading this until we were going to do the podcast.

But I had been thinking about it off and on up

until we were about to do this, and I was like,

oh my God. At the time when this came out, they

were doing the Summer of Superman event thing,

and it was so good. So on a scale of zero to

five with half points, what would you give the

first issue? I would probably say a four to a

four and a half, because I really did come to

enjoy it, even though it was different from what

I'm used to. But I thought the story was very

well done. I thought the artwork really helped

the story, especially without dialogue. Yeah.

That's what's going to tell you most of the story

is the artwork. And I thought it did a really

good job of that. Yeah. I did enjoy it. Yeah.

The artwork absolutely carries. And I'm not saying

that it takes away from what writing is here.

I'm saying that the artwork in like that photo,

that. The one with Crypto and Clark curled up

on the couch. Oh, God, it gets me every time

I see it. All right, on to issue two. So we get

the main cover of Lex and Crypto, and what is

he doing? He's giving him a hot dog. He's giving

him a hot dog. Okay, well. And behind his back.

Oh, Lex! Old man shaking fist at Lex. Lex, don't

do that. But it's a good cover based on what

Lex does in the issue. That's very true. Because

it's like reward and punishment. Yep. And yes,

same creative team. Ryan North, Mike Norton,

Ian Herring, Lucas Gattoni, Jolly and June Chung,

Raphael. De La Torre also did a variant cover

here. Sabrina Futch is the editor, Katie Kubert.

Obviously, Superman created by Jerry Siegel and

Joe Shuster by special arrangement with the Jerry

Siegel family. I do want to also bring this into

notice for anyone who is listening to this, who

has read this comic. You know this already. But

there is a content warning under this creative

team thing. This issue contains scenes of a bad

person with a good dog. True heroes care for

their furry friends and treat them with love

and respect. Man, this is difficult. Well, I'm

sure they put that in there because, you know,

you see crypto and anybody my age or even close

to it, somebody might have bought this. Going,

oh, well, it's Superman's dog. It's going to

be a cute little story. I'll buy this for my

kid or my grandchild. You want to give somebody

a warning about that. Yeah, no, exactly. Hey,

those are my clothes. Bad dog. And Lex proceeds

to hit Crypto. And we see a bunch of scenes where

Lex constantly punishes him. And we see a bunch

of scenes where Lex constantly leaves him alone.

Catherine, Peter, do not go into my room. Enough

already, Lex. We know. I don't know. Is it ever

said in this? Because I couldn't tell. Who the

hell are Catherine and Peter? Are they his siblings?

They're not his parents. No, they're relatives

of his. He does mention it at some point in the

story that he left his parents and moved in with

these. Relatives. Okay. So yeah, so Lex basically

leaves Crypto alone, and Crypto kind of gets

bored from sleeping and stretching and drinking

water. And my question is, where is he peeing

and pooping? Because Lex doesn't exactly take

him out. He starts chewing up the furniture.

And Lex comes in and sees that he's chewed up

the furniture. He hits him again, and then he

puts him in a cage. Lex says, Freedom requires

trust. Trust requires respect. You need to learn

respect, dog. Do you think I like hitting you?

I don't. You're right, Lex. You liar. But you

need to learn. Show me you've learned respect,

dog, and this will change. You will earn food.

You will earn affection. You will, in fact, earn

everything you want. Understood? Ugh, Lex. Good

job. And we go through this whole thing. Lex

finally does take him outside. He still chews

up the furniture. He probably gets hit again.

Lex takes him outside, lets him play with a couple

other dogs. Wait a minute. Hold on. Okay. So

the first... The first two panels on this page,

Lex finally takes him outside. He goes back inside,

he chews up the furniture, and he gets put in

the cage. I understand why he got put in the

cage, because he chewed up the furniture again.

Lex takes him outside, he plays with another

dog, but he ends up, I guess, technically, back

in the cage. Okay, but whatever. Well, because

in the one panel, he... He breaks, doesn't, I

don't know if he breaks the leash, but he gets

away from him. Okay. The leash is out of Lex's

hand. Okay. Yeah. Okay. So he's probably punishing

him for that. Oh, that's right. Okay. I see.

I see. I see. Yeah. Gotcha. Gotcha. And Lex is,

um, I don't know why. He's outside of the stuff

with the dog. Lex is building a bomb for some

odd reason. Well, he explains that. Yeah. Because

that also explains, like, who these people are.

He says, you know, I orchestrated events such

that I was sent here to these extremely distant

relatives. They appreciate the money they earn

as my caretakers, though they resent spending

what little it is on me. So he's there because

he wanted to get away from his father in Smallville.

So this is his chance to go to Metropolis. Right,

right. And then, of course, he needs money. Yeah.

And he does. Yeah, I think it's a little later

where he talks about that the people that are

his caretakers have taken out insurance, life

insurance, which they do not know about because

he took it out in their names. And he's the beneficiary.

Gotcha, gotcha. Okay, so it's a forensic files

case. Got it, got it. Oh, Lex, you cheap villain.

So as we go along further, the next page is the

nighttime stuff, and the bomb is done. I just

need to use it. I'm not a murderer, but Catherine

and Peter's lives, it's an objective fact that

they will never be worth more than they are in

that moment. that they perish, the greater good.

But then you're a murderer! Oh my god, Lex. I

should do it. Why do I wait? Yadda yadda yadda.

I do like the art in this page, though. I like

the colors of the page, even though I don't like

what he's saying in the page. I like the image

of Crypto sleeping. But, yeah. So the next day

we have the bomb and the this and the that. The

bomb, does the bomb accidentally, the bomb accidentally

goes off, right? Like he didn't plan that. Right.

That wasn't his plan. Because his plan was that

there would be a delayed timer. Right. He would

go establish an alibi. Yeah. So when he goes

out and he slams the door, the bomb falls off

the thing and then the click in the wire. Yeah.

Okay. So technically it was an accident. Someone's

in trouble. Open the door. That last panel, though,

of him on the right with Crypto in the cage.

Damn. That's a good panel. That's some really

good art right there. Yeah. All of the fire art

where he's saving crypto is really cool looking.

However, what happens in these pages is horrifyingly

just sad because he's trying to get crypto to

shut up and stop barking. But crypto is trying

to tell him that there are still people in the

house, but he wants crypto to shut up. And I'm

just like, dude, come on. Lex. Yeah. Yeah, Crypto,

not very happy with Lex. Again, this is a different

Lex Luthor than the one from the Silver Age who

started out good and then became bad. This one,

he seems, maybe under Crypto's influence, he

seems to be vacillating back and forth between...

Should I be good or should I go through with

my evil plan? Yeah. Yeah. Before crypto came

along, he was just pure evil. And now that crypto

is there, it's kind of like a teetering seesaw,

but he's still leaning more towards the evil.

And I think once crypto is gone, which we will

see here in a few moments, I think that. He's

going to go back to just being evil. Yeah, I

think that's kind of the path of Lex Luthor in

this version, yeah. Yep, so everybody's safe.

Remember we were in the living room and then

BAM! Your mutt get out too. Is he okay? Yep,

I only wish I could save him sooner. You better

not touch him there, Lex, boy, because crypto's

done with you. Yeah, you can see at this point,

and again, the artwork is telling you crypto

knows what Lex has done and does not like it

at all. Nope, not at all. So then we have the

further adventures of crypto. And next up is

The Depths of Winter. I love this final page

with him walking away from the city, looking

up at the moon with the snow. Yeah, that was

a good one. Absolutely, yeah. For a second issue,

what did you think overall? I thought this was

really good because it gives you... A lot of

insight into how Lex Luthor turns out the way

he does. Yeah. I mean, he kind of starts on that

path, wavers a bit, I think, under crypto's influence.

Maybe that's just me, but that's the way it feels.

But then comes down solidly on, I want what I

want, and I don't care if it's the right thing

to do. Yeah. Yeah, absolutely. And you also get

to see cryptos. character because like he he

realizes what lex has done and wants no part

of it yeah absolutely yeah well i mean the whole

page of the seeing the fire the after effects

of the bomb and crypto laying there in the cage

like he didn't even it wasn't like it even really

affected him at first and then once he got up

and realized and and Lex and everything else.

It's like, Oh my God, dude. Like, wow. But crypto

is on a new adventure out in the middle of winter.

Uh, issue two, zero to five with half points.

What would you give it? Um, I think I, this would

be a 4 .5 for sure. Cause you know, um, uh, number

one, I think it's an easier story to follow than

the first one is. And it really gives you like

character development for lack of a better word

for both Lex and for crypto. Yeah. Yeah. I'm

right there with you. 4 .5. That'll work. Yeah.

On to issue three. Now issue three, some of these

main covers are really weird to me. Like, I don't

know if that would grab me if it was just like,

I went in the comic shop and this cover was,

What do you think of this? The crypto flying

through the tree or biting the tree? What the

hell is this cover? It is weird. I'll tell you

what. When I first picked it up, I'm looking

at it going, I don't even know what this is.

Yeah, me too. I could clearly make out this gnarled

tree. I could see this red, but I didn't realize

this was, like, Crypto's cape or whatever. Yeah.

And I could see Crypto in it. Like, it was actually

the last thing I could pick out on this cover

was Crypto, even though his name is across the

top. Yeah. It's a strange thing. It's very, very

weird. Very weird cover. So issue three starts

out with Crypto sleeping under a snowy -filled

tree in the middle of winter as he makes his

joiny through this. And chapter three is winter.

Same creative team. The only change is Nico Einrichon

did a variant cover for this one. No content

warnings for this one, so yay for that. Crypto

makes his journey through the mountains and meets

up with a bunch of deer. So he has that adventure

barking the deer away. So there's that. And then

he sniffs out a little girl. Is it a little girl

or a little boy? I can't tell. I think it's a

little girl. Okay. That's how I see it. Okay.

And... He comes up to her, and there we go. Where

did you, how did you, a rescue dog? Are you a

rescue? Are you rescuing me, doggo? Or doggy?

Where's your tags? And your fur's all matted.

Oh, poor doggy, you're lost too. So they go around

and do a bunch of stuff and saving it, but it's

only a little, and we can split it. So they split

the little thing that she's got. They then do

some trekking through the woods there and all

that, and they find this cave later on. We'll

stop here. They fall asleep together, curled

up, and I love this page, this big giant splash

page of them curled up together, and behind them

in the sky, in the stars, you see a shooting

star. Now, when I saw this, my first thought

was, that's not another ship, is it? That's what

I thought, because I thought the big white blob

in the sky was another end of a wormhole. So

I'm thinking that's Kal -El's ship. That's Kal

-El's ship. Yeah, that's what I thought. They

don't tell you that. They don't tell you that,

no. But I don't think it is, because by the time

we get to see Jonathan and Martha and Kal -El,

he's probably this little girl's size, maybe

a little bit smaller than this little girl. So

I don't know. True, but it's not real clear about

the passage of time in these stories. This picks

up with Crypto. It's in the winter. He starts

out. like under this tree, but we don't know

if this is like shortly after issue two or whether

this is years later. There's nothing to tell

us that. Yeah, that is very, very, very true.

So the next page we get Crypto and the little

girl sleeping. He gets up. He looks at her. He

sniffs her. He bark, bark, barks at her, and

she don't wake up. Uh -oh. So he whimpers a little,

he pulls her out, lays on her, puts her in the

sun, and this, I think, is where he realizes.

This is the page in this issue is where he realizes

about his powers. Yeah. I think this is where

he figures it out, because this is where essentially

he takes her flying. Well, he also has the...

incredibly loud bark. Well, that's true. Yeah.

What do you think that's a substitute for if

it was Superman? I think Superman can like super

shout from time to time. So I'm thinking it's

the same kind of idea. Okay. It wouldn't be his

super ventriloquist because he's not sending

his voice anywhere. He's just being really, really

loud. As you can see it, the bark is overshadowing

the mountains and is scaring a flock of birds

out of the trees. Yeah. So I don't know if he's

trying to just wake her up or if he's trying

to bark so that somebody else can hear and come.

But that doesn't happen. He brings her. Yeah,

I think it's just to wake her up. I was thinking,

I don't know, I didn't realize Superman had super

loud shouting abilities, but I thought it was

a replacement for the super breath. I guess if

you're going to shout really loud, you've got

to have super breath. Yeah, I don't know. I don't

know. I'm not sure. But yeah, she wakes up. How

did you? It's not possible. None of this is happening.

And we get a basically a sort of, not really,

but I look at this last, it's not the last page

of the issue, but I look at this next page after

the bark page and I'm like, oh. It's a Lois Lane

flight page because that's the first thing that

popped into my head. She's asking all these questions

of how he did this and how he did that. And next

thing you know, she's on his back with her arms

wrapped around his neck and they're flying. And

I'm like, uh -huh. Yep. Now, see, I did not think

Lois Lane, although I can see that you might.

What I see in this, and I love the artwork here.

Yeah, it's so good. on the two -page spread.

Oh, yeah. She's got her arms wrapped around his

neck. She's got a red coat on. It looks like

she's his cape. Yep. Yeah, absolutely. I think

that is a terrific picture. Yeah, that's an amazing

photo. Absolutely. So good. So we get to later.

He wouldn't leave her side after we found her.

Very good boy. We gave him food and a bath. I

hope that's all right. What's his name? I'm sorry.

That's not our dog. Mixie died years ago. This

animal helped her after she got lost exploring?

Great name for the girl. Uh -huh. Mixie. Or no,

for the other dog. For the other dog, yeah. Yeah.

Mixie, yeah. Mixie. Uh -huh. Yeah. Mixie from

the fifth dimension, don't you know? Uh -huh.

Well, I don't see how that's possible, but he

was beside her. We couldn't actually pull him

away, so we stopped trying. It was the darndest

thing. Anyway, when Elizabeth comes to, which

should be any moment now. All her vitals are

moving in the right direction. She should be

able to tell us how she survived and how she

made it back to us. Mom, oh, thank God, Elizabeth.

And Crypto just kind of walks out the door. We

get to the next page, and he's basically walking

out of the hospital, and he's back on the road

again, to quote Willie Nelson. He's like Kane

in Kung Fu. He's just walking the earth. Yep,

pretty much. And we get to elsewhere. And we

get incoming data. Data received. Now, see, that's

the ship underwater. Remember the earlier episode?

That's where the ship is. Yep. Data processing.

I don't like this, because that face... Well,

you know what that symbol means. Yeah. It's going

to get very Brainiac -y in here in a minute,

because yikes. Well, I guess they figured if

they had Lex, they'd have to have Brainiac. Yep.

Well, yep, yep, yep. And then next is Spring,

and that's this issue. So that, ladies and gentlemen,

is the third issue of Five for Crypto, the last

dog of Krypton. What did you think overall, sir?

This one I really liked because you see Crypto

making a conscious decision, I think, to help

this girl. He finds her. I don't know if he knows

that she's lost, but he knows she's alone. And

she's probably, you know, he probably can figure

out that she's a kid. Yeah. And, you know, as

time goes on and they're in the cave and she's

asleep and she's not waking up, he can see she's

in trouble and needs help. And so he decides

he's got to get her somewhere where she can get

help. Yeah. This is the next step in his hero's

journey, if you like. Yeah, absolutely. It's

up to me. Nobody else is here. Somebody has to

help her. I guess it's me. Yeah. Absolutely.

And then that last page, it's like, oh, my God.

Yeah. Oh, my God. What the hell is going on now?

Don't you dare. Like, how dare you? And I like

how we're seeing crypto's journey throughout.

Again, like we mentioned earlier, it's like you're

taking Superman the Animated Series, even though

this isn't that, but it's like you're taking

that origin, twisting it, making Crypto the main

character instead of Kal -El slash Clark, and

figuring out how he would figure out his powers,

figure out where he needs to go. And it's all

through the lens of a dog's eye. It's all through

the mind of a dog and figuring that out. It's

outside of the Lex part of the story, even though

I know we needed that outside of that uncomfortable

part. I love this so much. Yeah. Issue three

gets a five from me. What about you? I think

I'd go five as well. I really enjoyed that. Yeah,

absolutely. 100%. Issue four. Issue four is going

to be probably very fun, at least in the beginning

it is, because the cover has him, well, I don't

know. The cover basically has him duck hunting,

even though those are blue jays or bluebirds.

But, like, he found his heat vision, and I'm

just looking at it now, and I'm like, huh. If

you switch those birds to ducks, that could be

a dog duck hunting. Even though the dog in Duck

Hunt never was hunting the ducks, it was us doing

that. Well, see, I wouldn't take it as duck hunting.

I think he's playing with the bird. Yeah. Oh,

he is. Yeah. I don't think he's trying to kill

them or eat them. No, he's not trying. But I

don't know. I saw a video earlier. Somebody updated

Duck Hunt to a more modern video game engine.

they give it modern graphics and whatever anyway,

but yeah, you're right. He's just playing with

them. He's just messing around. Like he's not

trying to hurt them, but it's still, it's, it's

heat vision and birds. All right. Opening this

one, we get, uh, we get crypto kind of going

through some garbage next to the, the homeless

people's place. We see a Brown dog come out,

a little Brown dog come up to crypto and kind

of, meager on in to the little food area there.

The brown dog keeps following Crypto. They kind

of have a little play thing that they're doing

and they chase each other around the little sidewalk

there. Then Crypto starts using his super speed,

I guess, because they're like speeding through

the ice rink here. Yeah. Like, wow. Those dogs

are those no animals on the ice. That was, that

was a fun little page. And, you know, crypto

being, even though he's from Krypton, you know,

being a typical dog, grabbing the Frisbee. Oh

yeah, absolutely. It's playing disc golf and

throws the Frisbee and crypto grabs it. Yep.

As dogs will do. Those dogs will do. Absolutely.

We get them playing with a stick. You get the

brown dog with a hot dog. They run off, and they

then lay in the grass together. And then we get

kind of like a midnight shot with some deer in

the background and Crypto with his head laying

on top of the brown dog, and they fall asleep

for the night. So we are now in Chapter 4. This

is Spring. Uh, same creative team, Ryan North,

Mike Norton, Ian Herring, uh, Farron Delgado

did the lettering this time around. Uh, Jolly,

June Chung, Carl Kershaw did a variant cover

this time around. No, uh, oh wait, no, there

is, there is a content warning on this one. Content

warning. This is a sad one. Read it with someone

to hug nearby. Good advice. Yes, yes, exactly.

And this splash page here is Crypto and the little

brown dog walking together through the little

meadow. I don't want to call it. It's not a forest.

It's a meadow with mountains around it kind of

place. And then we actually have humans in the

dog story. I'm attacking you to save the princess.

No, I'm attacking you to save the princess. Oh,

Lord. Kids LARPing in the park. I used to do

that when I was younger. Hey, you get kids and

you give them sticks, they're going to have a

sword fight. Yep, yep. Absolutely. Guys, look.

Dogs. You think someone lost them? No stuff,

guys. I don't know. They got any dog tags? I

feel how soft they are. Hey, we should name them.

Oh, Lord. I dub thee brownie because you're brown.

I dub thee sweetie because you're sweet. Kids.

Resifresin. Resifresin. Kids. Sweetie and brownie,

you want to be our secret fort? You want to see

our secret fort, not be our secret fort. Wow.

Way to screw that one up, Mike. Later. I don't

think this is the way. We can never. We never

came this way before. Sir Greg does not get lost.

Eddie or Edie. It's got to be just over this.

Whoa. They find a robot. No, it's not a Transformer.

So they find this robot, and this robot is not

something that they want to activate, but they

do. Identify dog, threat level zero. Identify

human, juvenile, threat level zero. Are you a

robot? Have you ever been into school, kids?

Like, seriously? How do you not know that it's

a robot? Like, so we have the robot, the Brainiac

robot thing. Sending data at light speed is the

logical solution. Yada, yada, yada, yada, yada.

It has made my mission challenging. What's your

mission? Phase one, gather data about the planet

on which I find myself. Evaluate whether this

world could be a threat. and then transmit all

findings back to my creators. My creators? Nah.

Phase two, once that data is transmitted, sterilize

the planet so that no new threats or data are

generated. Oh boy, Brainiac, you. So, they figure

out that the robot's gonna kill everyone, and

they try to stop him, and he's gonna attack him,

and... And here we go. We get a battle between

Crypto and Brownie and the robot, because I'm

not calling Crypto sweetie. It's just not going

to happen. Brownie ends up dead, unfortunately,

and then that causes Crypto to go red -eye rage.

And he uses the heat vision and blows up the

robot. Lots of red in these pages here. What

do you think? Well, you got to love that this

attack keeps bringing crypto's threat level up.

Started at zero. Yeah. Then goes to seven. Yep.

Level 10. Level 10. Seems like it was about to

go up until the robot was destroyed. Mm -hmm.

Yep, yep, yep. Absolutely. I love that final

panel where... It's like, transmission offline,

transmission failure. The last page is just Crypto

standing on his hind legs, just shooting his

I -beams into the thing. Oh, I love it. So cool.

So awesome. We get, let's see here. It's through

here, a giant killer robot. Kids, it's late,

okay? We only came here to quiet you down so

you can see. There's nothing here. No, it's totally

here. This crater is totally new. It's just a

hole in the dirt. No, there was a robot and dogs.

Brownies, welcome, sweetie. Oh, boy. Sweetie,

it's us. Come here, Brownie, come here. And they're

just laying there. I think, obviously, Brownie's

dead. Uh, cause crypto walks away. Oh man, that,

yeah, they weren't lying when they put the, the

content warning. Cause very sad. Yep. Very, very

sad. Crypto walks away. He, it seems like he

walks a thousand miles. He ends up curling up

in the grassy knoll here, uh, under a new sign.

Welcome to Kansas. And that's the end of this

one. Holy crap. Just holy crap. What do you think?

Well, they did warn us with the content warning.

That's very true. I mean, you got kids and dogs

and a killer robot. You know, nothing good is

going to come out of that. No. Good story. I

really enjoyed it. It was more action than...

yeah your stories there's more going on more

comic book kind of action yep oh yeah definitely

good yeah i i liked it a lot i thought it was

interesting like you just said this what i find

in certain comics recently that i've read is

that I've been reading a lot of the Skybound

stuff over at Image Comics with the Energon universe

with G .I. Joe and Transformers and stuff like

that. And with those issues, it's usually like

one or two issues of story and then like three

issues of action. Or sometimes it'll be mix and

match and it's kind of like spread out and kind

of things. And I usually think that generally

most comics in other companies will do that too.

And I think that's kind of what Crypto has done

here where... The first two stories, the first

two issues were full -on stories. There was a

little bit of action, but it wasn't the action

that we thought. Obviously, Lex smacking crypto

around is action, but it's not the action we

want, obviously, and kind of thing. But yeah,

no, this is issue four was lots of action, lots

of crypto doing stuff and things. Issue four,

I'll give it a four and a half. I really enjoyed

it. I thought it was great. What about you? Yeah,

I would probably go four and a half just because,

you know, a dog died. That brings it down a bit.

Yeah. Yeah, it does bring it down a bit. I'm

not a... old yeller fan you know no i i don't

even i think i've seen old yeller exactly once

in my 46 years on this planet and i really have

no interest in ever going back and watching it

again yeah i agree i think one viewing is enough

yeah i don't even want to view it for a podcast

recording like that that's one movie i do not

need to do a podcast about like Unfortunately,

sadly, the dog dies in the end. Okay, movie over.

No need to record a podcast about it. You know,

there's no analysis that we need to, you know.

All right, issue five, Crypto, the last dog of

Krypton, DC Comics all in. So we start this one

off with Crypto going through a cornfield. And

we see him using his super hearing. I love this.

I think this is cool. This is very awesome. And

the bottom panel, we see, no, keep back. So he's

very much using his super hearing. We see the

light blue and he's hearing all this stuff. And

as he gets closer to this house, he really hears

it. So it changed from a light blue lettering

to a black lettering on white text. And we are

now in whichever summer for Chapter 5. Once again,

Ryan North, Mike Norton, Ian Herring, Lucas Gattoni,

Jolly, June Chung, and David Talisky did a very

good cover for this one. There is no content

warning on this. Crypto breaks in, and what the?

There's a woman pointing a gun. at a family and

she fires a bullet at crypto and it bounces off

his nose i love that image that is so cool he's

not happy after it bounces off his nose at all

he comes at her like full fang heat vision out

like ready to blast her and then a robot shows

up where'd the robot come from I think that's

a memory because you see the, Oh, okay. Him with

the, with the, uh, okay. Brownie, the dog that

died. So I don't know. Okay. That's memory. And

maybe that's like what he's thinking. Okay. Yeah.

Okay. Yeah. Gotcha. Gotcha. Gotcha. Yep. Yep.

Okay. And she goes to say, huh? Lost your nerve.

Did you stupid animal? Now it's time for you

to play dead. I don't like this lady at all.

She needs to be put in jail or something. And

he hind kicks her. My hand. You broke my hand.

How did you break my hand? The father, I'm assuming

father, comes up, whaps her on the back of the

head with the frying pan. Reminds me of throw

mama from the train. Owen, get my frying pan,

Owen. I'm going to hit you with it. Boy, I love

that lady. Ashley, call the cop. She's knocked

out, but probably not for long. I'm on it. I'm

on it. So they kind of pet the dog and kind of

give him a little nuzzle and a hug. You saw it,

right? He got superpowers. He's got superpowers

just like Superboy. He's a really good dog. They

give him a bunch of pets and all that kind of

stuff. We get, this is really, is this really

Superboy's dog, Dad? I don't know, kids. I honestly

didn't know he had one. But thank you all the

same, good dog. So they scratch his little neck,

little side of his neck right under his chin.

And he smells something. And he, like, whatever

he's smelling literally looks like he just, I'm

going to say this. Obviously don't promote this

at all, but the look in Crypto's eyes at the

bottom of that page, it looks like he just sniffed

some cocaine or something, because it looks like

he's on drugs. Because that emotion of, oh my

God, let's not go with drugs, let's go with McDonald's

fries. Because he's just mesmerized, and he immediately

runs out the house, and he's just sniff, sniff,

sniff, sniff, sniffing. He smells something.

What is it, boy? What is it? Are there miners

in the well, Lassie? Go find them. You smell

something you recognize? You smell Superboy?

Go find him, doggie. Go find him. Thanks for

saving us. And tell Superboy we say hi. So Crypto

goes flying off and something I was not expecting

at all. Like, I wasn't even expecting this scene,

this whole family scene here at all. But something

I was not expecting is why I'm glad I didn't

read the solicits for the final two issues. We

see a combine or some sort of whatever. And we

see a falling star, falling crypto, crashes into

the combine. And yeah. Hey. Down, boy, down.

don't worry clark can get the old combine up

on her wheels again lickety split tell you what

me and martha we got ourselves a history of taking

in strays i'll bring you to meet the family and

if you play your cards right well then dog i

bet you can stay god damn it they got a jonathan

and martha love it love it oh boy so yeah so

they got jonathan and martha And we got Clark.

So we know that whatever that was earlier in

the window coming through the sky could not have

been Clark's ship. Because I don't think as much

time has passed as we thought. Because Clark

is a full... I'd say he's somewhere between 12

and 15 right here. Yeah, I would say that. Yeah,

so I don't think that much time has passed. So

I don't think whatever that was in the sky when

they were laying there earlier, I don't think

that much time has passed. So, yeah. Please,

can we keep him? Can we keep him? Of course you

can keep him. And we got just the thing, because

out in the spaceship, oh, look, we got Crypto's

little collar thing. His dog tag. We got the

cape, we got the suit, they both suit up, and

they're going to go on adventures together. The

end. I will say, though, this final page, out

of all of the entire series, my one gripe is

Superboy. I know that Superboy's design and drawing

is not, and his... The way his colors are and

the way he looks is not technically supposed

to be the adult Superman look. But man, his right

hand, his right fist just looks wrong. It looks

super deformed to me. Or too big for his body.

Yeah, his fist is bigger than his freaking head.

I don't know, man. Because if you look, yeah,

it's the way it's positioned. If you look at

his left hand, and this is coming from a guy

who has a right hand that is smaller, that I

can't even use, that is smaller than my left

hand. And again, it's a gripe. It's a little

nitpick criticism out of the entire five issues.

And it's only because of Superboy. And it's the

only, the rest of the book, fine, great, whatever.

Awesome. But yeah, to end this with this, with

them flying off to have adventures together.

Oh man. So cool. Not how I thought this was going

to end at all. Oh, you know, it's crypto and

it's super boy. It's gotta be a happy ending.

If it's going to be a mini series that has an

ending. Yeah. Damn. Well, better be a happy.

Well, I wasn't sure. When they announced this,

I wasn't sure. Usually when I see headlines for

an announcement, and usually it's just the headline

I'll see at first, I'll see a headline for an

announcement, and it's like, oh, cool. And then

I'll read the actual article, and the article

will say five -issue miniseries or this new ongoing.

I wasn't sure at first because I had only seen

the headlines for this. And I'm like... is this

going to be a mini series is it going to be an

ongoing is it going to be a whatever whatever

whatever so yeah i i kind of almost wish this

wasn't ongoing i can i can see if you didn't

know but i mean i didn't know at first but i

assumed it was going to be a mini series because

honestly as much as i love crypto i'm like they're

not giving him an ongoing series There's not

enough. Even in the Silver Age, he'd be in Superboy

stories. He'd be in backups. He did not have

his own comic. Because, you know, he's a dog.

Here you go. Crypto and Ace. You could give them

an ongoing. They could be the Just Us dogs. Go

ahead. I like... crypto i like ace a bit less

you know but yeah yeah yeah super power dog but

i think fan interest would wane in a book an

ongoing book for those two like it would it would

be fun for a while but how many different stories

can you do i mean what was the series wasn't

there look how many Stories they did with Scooby.

They did so many. Sholly Fish wrote them where

they had various superhero guest stars. Batman.

I know Batman's not. He's a superhero, but he's

not powered. I get it. But what was that? Scooby

Doo something or other. I forget what it's called.

It was kind of like, what's the cartoon called?

Whatever. Anyway. But yeah, no, I get it. But

after reading this, I'm like, oh, cool. We could

see more in the future. Or maybe another miniseries.

You could do a second miniseries. You could do

a second set of five at some point. You could.

Or you could do this as, I don't even know if

they do backup stories anymore. I don't know.

I'm spoiled from the Silver Age again. I grew

up in a time when there would be three different

stories in the comic. Yeah, very true. Now you

can go through a year's worth of comic and still

not get an entire story yet. Wait a minute. That's

why I always wait for the trades. I always getting

issue 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 or However you're going

to put those in a collection, I always wait for

the trades. Sometimes I will wait for the hardcover

kind of thing because I usually get them digitally

anyway, unfortunately. Yes, I know I'm a troglodyte

that way, but it's easier for me to do it that

way because that way I have a whole story arc

all at once and I don't have to wait. I mean,

I'm waiting for the trade, obviously, but I don't

have to wait 30 days from issue one to issue

two, whatever, whatever, whatever. And half the

time I'm building up the pullback schedule so

much to the point of, ah, okay, we'll do this.

We'll do that. We'll do this. We just have to

wait this long to get it done. Bob's your uncle.

There you go. There you go. All right. right

folks uh we rated it we did all that kind of

good stuff superman uh the superman crypto last

dog of krypton uh is what we covered today here

inside the pull bag you got anything you want

to talk about or mention or promote sir um i

have nothing to promote because unlike you i'm

not a podcaster i'm um And I got to say, on this

final issue of the series, definitely five points,

five stars, because you got Crypto, you got Superboy,

you got Ma and Pa Kent, you got everything you

need at that point. Definitely that. But now,

just keep on listening to Mike, guys. Thank you,

thank you. Yeah, absolutely. The whole time,

when... crypto crash landed as soon as jonathan

started as soon as the words for jonathan came

up i'm like oh hi eddie jones as soon as as soon

as martha started like oh hi k cal i i heard

i heard i don't care what anyone says i love

lois and clark the new adventures of superman

and eddie jones and k cal and who played jonathan

and martha on that show are my martha And Jonathan.

And I heard their voices through this text in

this series. Yeah, this is so good. I have no

idea what's coming up next, folks. What in the

hell? Oh, man, that means I have to. Oh, crap.

Joe Reed, you suck. I had to do that later. I

have no idea what's coming up next, folks. I

honestly don't. We are way late on things that

should have already been recorded. So yeah, but

it is what it is. And thank you for listening
