Hi, this is Tom Ruger and you are listening to
the Geekcast Radio Network. Hello and welcome
back to the Geekcast Radio Network's Top 100
Animated Series Nominees episodes. This is part
two. I am, of course, TFG and Mike. Joining me
is Steve Megatron. Hello, sir. Yo. Yo. And Optimus
Solo. Hello, sir. Ho. Not the Thundercats. No
rum. No rum. Steve always sets me up, though.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Ho, ho, ho, and a bottle of
rum. How's everybody doing tonight? Wonderful.
Super. Thank you for asking. That's right. Alright,
continuing on from the last episode, we enter
the decade of the 1980s. Take it away, Optimus
Solo, and remind us what's in store for the listeners
as we go through this new format. Yes, we will
be revealing the nominees that are eligible to
be voted on for the Top 100 Animated Series of
All Time. This time we're looking at just the
decade of the 80s, so like you heard last episode
where we did 50 eligible nominees from the pre
-1980s, today will be 50, 50, 5 -0 eligible shows
from the 1980s. Then we'll have a few more in
store for the 90s, the 2000s, and the 2010 to
present. So these are unlike the last time we
did the top 100 countdown where any show was
eligible in the history of animation, which means
people were picking from thousands. This time
you only get to pick from the 250 nominees. So
this is like the special unveiling of those 250
this time. The 50 from the 1980s. Scooby's like
chicken and out. He won't budge. I bet I could
change his mind with a Scooby snack. Scooby snack?
Catch. Give him two Scooby snacks and he like
orbits the Earth. Doctor, it's an honor to meet
you. I've listened to all your radio programs,
read all your books. I bet you'll want to write
a whole chapter on me. Mr. Seville, I am not
Dr. Weisenheimer. You're not? No, I'm the doctor's
secretary, Milton Schwartz. If you'll just sit
and wait, the doctor will be with you in a moment.
Alexander, why aren't you practicing with your
team? What's the use? We're in last place. Besides,
I'm captain of the team. I can take an afternoon
off once in a while. We can work on my model
airplane, father. I would love to play too, Alexander.
But I have a speech to give to the people of
Celestville. But you're the king, father. You
can take an afternoon off. Yeah. I'm going to
get all this uniform before I choke. Because
I'm king, I must do many things that I would
sometimes rather not do, children. Yeah, and
for dessert, punk in pie. Oh, yeah. Save that
guy for later. Beetlejuice, I thought you were
coming as Betty. And I thought Betty was coming
as a beetle. On a whim, I decided to come as
a caterer. Right, Beetlejuice. You talked my
parents into hiring you as the caterer, huh?
Hey! You wanted a freaky Halloween party, didn't
you? What's this? A lovely lady dining alone?
May I join you for lunch, Ms. Bear? Be my guest.
The cubs aren't interested. Oh? Where are they?
Eating in front of that television. It used to
be a treat. Now they do it every day. Give it
to me! No way! It's my turn to choose! We're
not... Watching bear wrestling. There's no way
I'm watching Little Treehouse on the Prairie.
Okay, that's it. No more TV for a week. So let's
start it off with our first group of five. These
are revealed in alphabetical order. So the order
that we reveal these has nothing to do with what
may or may not appear eventually on the top 100.
It is just alphabetical order. So the first group
of five, we will name five, and then we'll get
Steve, Mike, and my own reactions to them, and
then we'll just keep going until all 50 have
been revealed. You react first this time compared
to the last podcast, compared to part one. You
react first this time, even though you're revealing
them to us. You react first because you got to
react last, last time. Something let a Tasmanian
devil out of its cage. All right, so the first
group of five is... A Pup Named Scooby -Doo from
1988, Alvin and the Chipmunks from 1983 that
had over 100 episodes, Babar the Elephant, I
believe is what Babar is, if I'm remembering
correctly. I didn't watch Babar as a child, but
that came out in 1989. Then we have, joining
Babar, we have the Beetlejuice animated series,
which also came out in 1989, and then the Berenstain
Bears cartoon, which also... came out in, or
not in 89, that one came out in 1985. So a little
bit of a weird flavor here, I guess. We got Babar
and Berenstain Bears from the more young demographic
that those were aimed at. And then we have the
classic Alvin and the Chipmunks, a variation
of Scooby -Doo with a pup named Scooby -Doo.
And there's obviously a hundred variations on
Scooby -Doo. And then Beetlejuice, which is obviously
aimed a little bit older than like the likes
of Babar and Berenstain Bears. I... believe in
my opinion that the only one i think that i would
consider out of this group of five would be alvin
and the chipmunks not saying anything bad about
those other shows at all it's just in my opinion
those would be probably the or that would be
the only one that me personally i think warrants
In the discussion for Top 100, Steve, what do
you think? I personally like the pup named Scooby
-Doo and Elvin and the Chipmunks. I remember
Beetlejuice. I remember Berenstain Bears mostly
from the book. And then Vavar, I was familiar
with it, but it's not something I would have
cared about watching. Beetlejuice is definitely
a piece of that time. Pup named Scooby -Doo and
Elvin and the Chipmunks, I think, are the only
strong contenders in this block. I could see
that. Mike, do you agree or disagree? And then
also, do you think the resurgence of the recent
Beetlejuice movie will play into a factor of
getting more people to consider the cartoon?
Or do you think it's lost to the 80s? I think
with Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice. Yeah,
I did it. I think with the sequel being out now,
people might be searching out the animated series.
And seeing what it was all about, I think they
might be going back and watching the original
movie as well. That animated series was so good.
It really was for what it was at the time. Like
you both have said with Berenstain Bears, we
all remember the books. I remember both because
I remember trying to match up the episodes of
the show with the books I had. I had so many
Berenstain Bear books as a kid in the 80s. Had
so many of those. Alvin and the Chipmunks is
classic. Can't go wrong with that. And like Steve
said, out of all the versions that they've done,
and we all know in the late 80s, because it was
1988 when this happened, but in the late 80s,
the let's do the kid version of the adult version
of the thing was the thing to do because we had
flintstones kids and we had this kid and that
kid and every other kid cartoon tom and jerry
kid oh man if we were doing don't even don't
even start don't even you're gonna don't even
you're it's it's gonna be an earworm all night
don't even start because that's a theme song
oh man That just the theme song alone that Tom
and Jerry kids show. Oh, my God. But a pup named
Scooby Doo. Literally, I kid you not. I have
both seasons on my Fandango account. And literally,
I was just watching a bicycle built for boo the
other day. I love a pup named Scooby Doo. We
got to interview Tom Ruger, who was one of the
executive producers, I believe, head writer.
I could be wrong in the head writer credit, but
he was one of the executive producers on that
show. Absolutely love a pup named Scooby -Doo.
Yeah, like Steve said, Babar is the only outlier
in this five because I know he's an elephant.
That's about it, I think. Like, I know the name.
And I know he's an elephant. That's about it
on this set of five. But everything else, I think
the other four have some sort of contention rights.
The four besides Berenstain Bears, the other
four were all nominated for awards. The only
ones that appeared on the nine list that we looked
at when we were compiling these groups of 50
was a pup named Scooby -Doo. Babar actually showed
up there, and Alvin and the Chipmunk showed up
on five of those. Beetlejuice did not show up
anywhere, which really shocked me, but we'll
see how the voters think now that maybe the movie
brings it back into the consciousness of the
voters. We'll see. He was my commander at the
Marshal's Academy, the best in the galaxy. He
was my idol, my hero. We called him Jingles because
of those spurs he wore. I remember he was a tough
trainer, but a good one. Get to the point, Mayor
Davis. Unless the doctors give you a new electronic
body covered by a computerized metal shell. The
operation's not without risks. But if it's successful,
you'll be the country's most unique crime fighter.
I can't give up now. It would be like sending
a signal to the big boss. Saying it's okay for
him to commit crimes and ruin the city with his
evil schemes. I'm going to need help. A select
group of the best police officers gathered from
around the country. And together, we will overcome
the threat posed by the Big Boss. Gentlemen,
you have my permission to begin the cybernetic
replacement. Hurry, Kevin! The interdimensional
warp only opens every 1 ,000 video years. And
it's almost time. This is hurrying, Princess.
Video games are my specialty, remember? If I
didn't know better, I'd say you've lost your
cheer. I'm afraid you're right. What? I'm very
intrigued on this next set of five, guys. Uh
-oh. the next set of five. And one thing I'm
going to preface this one before we list the
shows is our original Top 100 obviously had a
healthy amount of both 80s and 90s cartoons based
on the age of all of us and things that we grew
up on and et cetera, et cetera. There may have
been some biases involved. One thing that's going
to be curious to me is when you add the 15 years,
we kind of talked about this last episode, but
when you add 15 more years of cartoons, and it's
really not just adding 15 years of cartoons.
You also probably have to say considering almost
20 years because there were some that had come
out right before we did that list that really
hadn't been around long enough for anybody to
know if they were going to last or how good they
were going to be. So it's really considering
15 plus years because it's some right around
that mark that have had more time to grow on
people for sure. But when you consider all of
those extra cartoons, to me, that's where you
run into... Do some of these 80s and 90s shows
that were maybe ranked anywhere from, let's say,
70 to 100 on the original list, do they become
in jeopardy of not making the list is something
that I'm going to be intrigued to see as this
whole thing unfolds. And I feel like the set
that I'm about to reveal could be in that grouping
of stuff that is it still going to be able to
make our top 100 or is it going to fall off because
all five of these shows were on our original
top 100. So the next set of five is Brave Star
from 1987, Cops from 1988, Captain N and the
Game Master from 1989. So we did 87, 88, and
89. We got that going for us. And then we have
Care Bears from 1985. and Chippendale Rescue
Rangers from 1989. Chippendale Rescue Rangers
was on the most lists that we looked at. It was
on four of the nine. Care Bears was on two. The
rest were all on our list for sure. The only
one that got an award nomination was Rescue Rangers,
but all five of these were on our original list.
I would consider all five of them again. I don't
know which ones will ultimately make the cut
on my list because it's going to be like a bloodbath
when it comes to the final 10 shows on my list,
I'm sure. Trying to decide which ones make it
and which ones are left on the chopping room
floor. This is going to be one of the more intriguing.
Every time we do the Top 100, we talk about the
ones that just missed it. Whether it's 10 or
we reveal 15 or 20 or however many we reveal
that just didn't quite make it. This is going
to be a very intriguing set of those cartoons
when all is said and done. I think the one that
I would make the most case for is... probably
rescue Rangers and maybe a little bit for care
bears only because of what it represented for
a different demographic. And it's been redone
like 700 times. Whereas I feel like for some
reason, cops and brave star have never gotten
the reboot. They've never gotten this, you know,
anything else besides that original incarnation,
which is weird because so many of the other ones
have been rebooted in some way, shape or form,
but cops and brave star have not. I would probably
put brave star a tick ahead of cops. captain
n it really depends on how you rate all of the
video game cartoon video game based cartoons
and which ones you like do you have room for
all of them do you have room for just one mike
what do you think of this group of five chippendales
rescue rangers easily top 25 if not top 30 care
bears When I was, okay, look, when I was six,
seven, eight, yeah, for me personally, it's that
age range. So for me, it would probably be in
the top 50 somewhere, maybe. Maybe just under
the top 50, maybe 52, 53, 54, something like
that. I don't think I've ever seen Brave Star.
I might have seen the intro. We need to do some
work on that, sir. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I own the
complete series. We can do this. Yeah, yeah,
yeah. That's for a whole other podcast series.
We'll work on that. Cops. I love Cops. Cops is
basically the Rodney Dangerfield of 80s cartoons.
It gets no respect. It really doesn't. At least
not in any of the circles. You and I respect
it. I don't think Steve even... I'm sure he knows
of it. I don't know how many episodes of it he's
seen. He probably might have only... Do you even
know cops? I've seen a little bit of it. Nothing
I would care about. Yeah, it's fine. It's fine.
I figured as much. captain n though i mean we
had a debate during the first top 100 between
captain n and the super mario brothers super
show i think it was that we kind of yeah back
and forth and i think we were somewhat split
two people were for one and two people were for
the other right but here's the thing with captain
n in the game captain in the game master you
would think that after you said 89 right correct
yeah yeah so almost Well, we're not quite to
40 years for Captain N yet, but almost 40 years
for that show? 35, 40 years? You would think
that would be the show? That would be the character?
That they could do so many reincarnations of
series for? Okay, regardless of Captain N, Captain
Nintendo, and it being a Nintendo character,
but the type of character that could champion
a video game team of multiple characters from
multiple systems going in multiple... He's basically
the Wreck -It Ralph of the 80s. He's not Wreck
-It Ralph. I'm not saying he's Wreck -It Ralph,
but you get my point. Captain N was the guy that
could go into multiple video game levels and
worlds and things and whatever. And he fought
Mother Brain and Eggplant Wizard and everything
else. And you would think with how far video
games has come in the last 40 years since his,
almost 40 years since his cartoon, that you would
have so many reboots of that series in different
versions of it. especially since Matt Hill is
still, you know, going like we, uh, was it, who
did it? It was at me and TV's Mr. Neil, I think,
or I forget who did the interview with me. We
interviewed Matt Hill voice of captain N and
man, just, you would think that that would, that
cartoon series or something similar to it would
have multiple and it doesn't. And I, you know,
Out of all of these, Care Bears was the only
one that has been redone until just recently
with Rescue Rangers. It had the movie a year
or two ago. Otherwise, Care Bears has been the
only one that's been redone and that one's been
done every other year, it feels like. Steve,
what do you think of this set of five and which
ones do you think have the best shot of making
the top 100? Honestly, out of these, I think
Care Bears and Chip and Dale's Rescue Rangers.
Rescue Rangers had the live action hybrid movie
that came out a few years ago on Netflix or not
Netflix, Disney Plus. And then Care Bears has
been rebooted multiple times. And Chip and Dale
has also been used in a lot of Disney Channel
content. So I feel like those two are the strongest
contenders. For instance, My kids wouldn't have
any clue what Bravestar cops or Captain N are.
I do. Bravestar, I really don't know anything
about, really. Cops, I know enough about. And
then Captain N, I've actually watched. But I
think the two strongest contenders here are Care
Bears and Chippendale Rescue Rangers. I agree.
And I have a feeling, too, I voted for all of
these except for Captain N on the original. But
this is where I'm thinking something like Bravestar
or cops. could get edged out if there's not enough
room for me because I will have... Another thing
that we sometimes consider when we're doing these
top 100 lists is whether it's a decade, whether
it's a genre, whether it's a franchise, at least
myself, I try to limit how many of a certain
thing are coming in. So for this example, I would
say what we're talking about today with the 80s,
there's a ton of 80s action, boy -centered...
or boy like we're the main demographic but like
those 80 action 80s action uh cartoons and i
don't know if how much room i have for 20 of
them you know what i mean like i gotta you can
choose the best of the best that's going to represent
that and we know that there's some big heavy
hitters in that group so then it comes to me
like is there really room in the hundred for
a brave star for a cops or for some of the other
ones that we may talk about and i just don't
know if there's going to be yeah i mean and before
you go on like i I actually had Captain N, Care
Bears, and Chip and Dale on my original list
out of these five. And looking at my original
list, there's a bunch of other shows from the
80s and 90s, too, that are looking back at them.
I mean, they were more fresh then than they are
now, but they're so far removed from pop culture
now at this point. Nobody would know what they
are, kind of like Bravestar and Cops. Yeah, and
that's something interesting, too, because I've
been re -listening to the original Top 100 list.
it's interesting the effect that time has on
some of these that nothing else is really playing
a factor, right? Like it's not like something
came out that made it worse. It's not like, and
it's not, I'm not just talking about the fact
that there's been more cartoons, so there's less
space, but some of these have just literally
over time faded more like they, they just don't
have the same staying power, I guess, as some
other ones that have remained in the kind of
the consciousness of society or of pop culture.
Definitely interesting to track. Come on, Igor.
You're supposed to be looking for the castle.
Any sign of it yet? No, sir. Nothing but icebergs,
sir. And the sea going up and down, up and down,
and up and down. I know a top agent should always
keep fit, Danger Mouse, and ready to leap into
action at the moment's notice. Back to Hulk!
How can having a muscle -bound finger help? Really,
Penfold, it can help in lots of ways. Like what?
Well, like... Like... Uh... Uh... Whoa! That'll
be Colonel K. Ah, Danger Mouse, I wonder if you
mind saving the world again? Certainly, Colonel.
Now, pay attention while I show you how to do
this. Now, Dennis, a climber's rope is his best
friend. But remember, you must always tie it
to something. Okay, whatever you say. Watch closely
now. Here it goes. Uh -oh. That was a close call.
It's a good thing I tied that rope to something,
just like you said. Good for you, Dennis. What
did you tie it to? To you. Well, Dennis, that
was a very clever... Tommy, what is that? Gummy
berry juice. No, Tommy, stop! I'll be the greatest,
most famous knight that ever was. And Princess
Calla will notice me. Look, please, don't be
scared of me. I wouldn't hurt you. You're my
heroes, don't you understand that? I want us
to be friends. The juice wore off, didn't it?
So, now the shoe's on the other paw. I'm going
to get me some more rope. Leave the boy alone,
Gruppy Gummy. He's proved that he's trustworthy.
Thank you, ma 'am. My name's Kevin, by the way.
Well, what a polite young man. What's that noise?
Yikes, is he dead? What the? Well, you're alive.
So you thought you finished me off? Well, you're
not going to get my fish that easy, you big monster.
Stop it! What are you doing? This is for hitting
me! So, let's go ahead and reveal the next set
of five. Only two of these were actually on our
original list, which is somewhat shocking that
one of the other ones wasn't. I'll let you guys
decide which one that is, but we're going to
go with Count Duckula from 1988. That did appear
on one of the lists we looked at, but it was
not on our original top 100. We have Danger Mouse.
That one was from 1981. That was definitely on
our top 100. Very huge presence when it comes
to the UK and viewers from that across the pond,
you could say. Then we have Dennis the Menace
from 1986. We have Disney's Adventures of the
Gummy Bears from 1985. Got a couple nominations
for awards and was on our original list. And
then the... First incarnation that we received
here in America, I believe, the original Dragon
Ball from 1986, not to be confused with one that
will come up shortly, but Count Ducula, Danger
Mouse, Dennis the Menace, Disney's Adventures
of the Gummy Bears, and Dragon Ball. The interesting
thing for me here is the combination of Count
Ducula and Danger Mouse because those were the
two very much heavy hitters. Those are like,
I don't want to say the Simpsons, but for the
UK, those are huge. They're like... Two of the
biggest shows that they would know and that was
just kind of like woven into the society there,
I guess, for people that grew up in the same
era that we did. We did get these in America.
I don't think as many people saw them. They sometimes
fly under the radar and go a little unnoticed.
But what I will say from a quality standpoint
when it comes to the writing and a lot of the
things that go into making a cartoon, I do believe
they're pretty top notch. I don't know if it'll
have enough widespread appeal to make the top
100, but I do think from a quality standpoint
and from an impact in the UK that they are deserving.
But I guess my biggest vote here outside of those
two would be for the gummy bears. I just think
that was critical to the Disney afternoon and
the success that led to a lot of the other shows.
Like we just talked about rescue Rangers, like
rescue Rangers may not have happened if gummy
bears was not as successful as it was. And we'll
talk about some more Disney shows probably as
we reveal more shows. And then I think the Dragon
Ball one becomes interesting because then you
kind of have to determine, are people going to
split the vote between the different incarnations
or the different series within the Dragon Ball
franchise? That's always something we consider.
We talked about that a lot when we did our last
Top 100 with the different superhero franchises.
And like we said just a second ago, do you only
have room for so many Spider -Man cartoons, for
example? Do you only have room for so many Dragon
Ball cartoons? Do you only have room for so many
whatever? So that sometimes plays into the voters'
rationale. So Steve, what do you think about
this set of five with Count Duckula, Danger Mouse,
Dennis the Menace, Gummy Bears, and Dragon Ball?
So obviously there was quite a few that voted
on Danger Mouse last time. I'm not really surprised
at Dennis the Menace just because, yeah, it probably
faded out as well. Count Dacula. I've seen a
little bit of that. I've seen a little bit of,
I've really seen a little bit of every one of
these, but the only one I find that I can actually
rewatch is the one with the most episodes and
that's Dragon Ball. And the, the thing about,
and this is something I'm learning as I'm, I've
been watching a lot of anime over the last like
two years just because I've kind of exhausted
American, you know, Western animation that I
feel like actually watching, uh, outside of,
rerun material. And there's a very strong base
for Dragon Ball over all of the other ones. And
then pretty much if they liked Dragon Ball, they
may not care for Dragon Ball Z, may care for
a different version. It's very splintered where
they'll, they don't really lump them in together
because they're almost different. Dragon Ball
Z does pick up several years after Dragon Ball
ends. But it's a totally different dynamic going
into it all the way on through till it ends.
And some people may also, again, like it would
depend on what version they like to better. There's
so many different dubs of these two. You can
either get the subs of them, which are, you know,
direct port, or you get the dubs in America,
which were mostly done in the 90s here. There
have been three or four versions to the point
where they've redubbed Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball
Z and GT multiple times in the US to the point
that now they have a dub out. It was either Funimation
or Crunchyroll, which kind of they bought Funimation.
They now have a unified front where all of the
voice actors are the same from Dragon Ball, Dragon
Ball Z, GT, Super, Daima, all the way on through.
It could again get splintered just because of
that. I know on the original Top 100, we did
have one contributor that voted for the original
Dragon Ball that did not vote for Dragon Ball
Z, which may have cost Dragon Ball Z a few placements
and stuff like that because it seemed like they
only had room for one of them and they voted
for the original. The intriguing thing when it
comes to franchises as to how that splits in
the more years we consider, the more incarnations
there are for certain franchises. We'll talk
about a bunch of them today, but some franchises
just keep coming back and coming back. So it's
interesting to see how that would play a part.
Mike, any reactions from that set of five? Hey,
Mr. Wilson. The other thing that's interesting
with that one is kind of similar to what we talked
about with Berenstain Bears. yeah sometimes people
are more familiar with the property based on
a different medium so like barons and bears it
might be the books dennis the menace it might
be the movies or it could be the comic strip
do people remember the animated series but i'll
let you continue there was only one dennis the
menace movie right i can't remember i've lost
track i'm not doing any research right now folks
because i'm trying to keep my hands still But
the only Dennis the Menace movie I remember is
the one where Christopher Lloyd played the villain
in the 90s. Because the only animated series
for Dennis I remember is the one from the 80s
where he was like, hey, Mr. Wilson. Like, that's
all I remember. Gummy bears. I did the research
for you. So there was a direct video standalone
sequel called Dennis the Menace Strikes Again,
released in 1998. That's right. A second sequel,
A Dennis the Menace Christmas, was released in
2007. Oh, wow. Okay. Gummy Bears. Gummy Bears
is always classic. Love the Gummy Bears. Some
days I wish I had me some Gummy Berry juice.
Well, my kids, when they saw that name, they
thought it was that modern song that's really
annoying. no and i was like no it's it's totally
different they're like what the heck is this
because i'll go through tv show theme songs with
them sometimes i've been doing that actually
my daughter has watched like a half a dozen episodes
of the gummy bears and i don't she wasn't like
magnetized to it but she did enjoy it enough
to watch you know more than one episode very
cool very cool and then danger mouse danger mouse
is just classic it's it's amazing so yeah uh
Good selection. You're gonna make it, Goku. You
can pull through. No, Krillin. He can. Can't
you, Goku? Nope. Not this time, friend. This
time, I can't. I'll wish you back, Goku. We already
have three Dragon Balls. Or, Uncle Scrooge, you
can do it in a movie business. I loaned them
some money, and it's due this morning. Darn show
folk. Act like they've got all the time in the...
Time? What time is it? Almost four. Yike, two.
And now, it's time for another astronomical adventure
with Courage of the Cosmos! Yay! In our last
episode, Major Courage and his crew... Yay! Right.
Let's see how you scumazoids like this. What
stay tuned courage of the cosmos we'll be right
back Keep going from up here. We may be able
to see which way to go to get home What an echo.
Let me try. Hello? Sheila, can't you do something
about your little brother? He's not bothering
anyone. He's bothering me. I'm trying to think
of a way to get us out of this freaky place and
back home. If there is a way home. Don't worry.
There is, and we'll find it. I hope. Come on,
Uni. You try. We're with you, Lady Jane! Let's
cut cable! They must not free the shuttle! Cobra!
Attack, Bastro! Destroy the G .I. Joe marauders
before they breach the canopy! The delegates
are terrified, Duke. I'm calling off the conference
before more people get hurt. Please, give us
two hours. Just two hours before you make your
announcement. Okay, two hours. But that's it.
Cutting it kind of tight, aren't you? Can't be
helped. Come on, we're paying Mercer a visit.
He's the only one who might know how to stop
this thing. Well, let's look at the next five.
We had three out of the next five also made our
original top 100. So that would be, I'm sure
this doesn't come as a surprise since we're doing
this alphabetical order. Dragon Ball Z from 1989
is the first one in this group. It was on six
of the nine lists that we looked at. We have
the classic DuckTales, which came a few years
after Gummy Bears. It had 100 episodes, at least
four different nominations or awards. It's on
seven of the nine lists that we looked at. We
have Dungeons & Dragons from 1983. It appeared
on four of the nine lists that we looked at.
And then we have both of the G .I. Joe Deke series
and the G .I. Joe A Real American Hero series,
one from 85, one from 89. We did split them up
because there's enough distinguishing between
the two that I don't ever consider them the same
series. So we have Dragon Ball Z, DuckTales,
Dungeons & Dragons, and both G .I. Joe series.
For me, I believe I voted on four out of, I had
four of these five on my original top 100. So
again, it just comes down to, I believe something
like Dungeons & Dragons may be in that same realm
that we talked about with Cops and Bravestar,
where is there really enough room to include
that? DuckTales, for me, is 100 % going to be
something that should appear somewhere. Dragon
Ball Z should 100 % appear. At least G .I. Joe,
a real American hero, should appear. Then with
the Deke series, I can see some people, depending
on which versions are their favorites, some will
like that, some might like Renegade, some might
like Resolute. But it's hard to not vote for
the original one when it comes to G .I. Joe.
So that would be my thought process. Maybe Dungeons
and Dragons gets left off. Maybe G .I. Joe, the
Deke series. But I think Dragon Ball Z, DuckTales,
and A Real American Hero are locks. What do you
think, Steve? I concur with your opinion there.
I did have four of these five on my list the
first time. Just looking at them, I had the Deke
series as well. Purely because I enjoyed that
90s version of it. Uh, it was badass. Cobra commander
was awesome in that. Like he wasn't hindered
by Serpentor or Destro. He was just, he did his
own thing and they were, and it was more like,
it was very much more nefarious and dangerous
in, in a lot of the stuff. Cause they were doing
a lot of mutation stuff and you got them wearing
his mask. You know, the, he had the metal suit
for awhile and then he, he went to the, the blue,
uh, The blue face mask thing that, you know,
plastic bag that he wore over his head. But no,
I mean, Dragon Ball Z, for one, was one that
I. I knew a crap ton about in high school and
in middle school, so I was kind of the go to
for that. Plus, I was watching I'd seen a couple
different dubs of it. There was there was the
dub with Ian James Corlett as as Goku. Yep. Which
only made it through the first saga. And then
they recast. Uh, and it started doing a different
dub and they did Peter Columbus for Goku up through
the cell saga. And then they rebooted again.
And, uh, they actually picked up from there with
Sean Schemmel to take over from Peter Columbus.
And then they kind of recast everybody. Um, And
then they went back and did all of it all over
again. I do think Dragon Ball Z was an entry
point into anime for an entire generation. And
it was. That was how I got introduced to it was
watching it. I think it was on Cartoon Network
and then it was on Toonami. And then Dragon Ball
just kind of lived on Toonami after that. And
so that was a ritual for me going home and watching
it every day and taping it around work and everything
else. That was my... my go -to show when beast
wars wasn't available and um real american hero
gi joe mostly what i knew of it was i had the
animated film and i had it on vhs watched the
crap out of it and then i watched whatever was
available at like the blockbuster or hollywood
video and things like that um and then the deke
series i i don't know where i caught it i think
I think some of that also was on the, the sci
-fi channel, you know, tune express thing that
they had going on and it kind of was paired with
transformers generation one. So that was how
I was introduced to both of those and duck tails.
I was a regular watcher. Um, the theme song,
I, I still love the theme song and I love the,
the dragon balls. You rock the dragon theme song.
And then the, the GI Joe Deke series, uh, you
know, got to get Joe. Yeah. Uh, So I love those
intro songs alone, even without the series, but
they're all great. I think they're all going
to end up on there. I think one thing that's
going to help the likes of Dragon Ball Z, DuckTales,
and G .I. Joe is that, like we've talked about
with a couple of the other ones, they have not
necessarily faded away. They've been redone.
There's been G .I. Joe movies, other cartoon
series. There was just a recent reboot of DuckTales.
Obviously, there's been new series for Dragon
Ball, so I don't think those have necessarily...
faded away from people's you know top of mind
so i think that's going to help it help those
and probably hurt dungeons and dragons because
most people don't know that that was even a cartoon
show they probably just are familiar with the
dnd you know campaigns and that side of dungeons
dragons which really has nothing to do with the
1980s cartoon mike what are your thoughts on
these five when people show me the 83 dungeons
and dragons cartoon i'm like what the hell acid
trip were these people on where's jeremy irons
like no no because seriously look my first and
only x my first and only exposure to dungeons
and dragons was the 2000s movie because I saw
it in 2000 when it debuted in theaters with Jeremy
Irons as the voice, or he was in that movie somewhere
as one of the characters. But yeah, no, that
would be left off my personal list, because as
you guys have all already said, DuckTales, simply
amazing. Absolutely love that. I have, I don't
know if I have the Deke series, but I do know
I have the... complete series of G .I. Joe for
Real American Hero on DVD. It's in my DVD case.
There have been plans for at least the last...
Well, there have been plans for decades, but
at least the last four or five years since I've
had the DVDs, there have been plans over on ToonCast
for us to review the series. I remember watching...
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay, Mariah Carey. So, The
funny thing is, is that what I remember of G
.I. Joe is Real American Hero going up against
Transformers a couple of times in the 80s, and
I made a choice, and I chose the robots. No disrespect
to G .I. Joe at all, because, you know, Old Snake
came in a few times and did a few things in Transformers,
a couple episodes, and Only Human and all that,
whatever. And I liked G .I. Joe for what I saw
of it. I just have never watched a lot of it.
But I've watched enough of Real American Hero.
And I gotta say, I gotta disagree. I don't know
how you find just a blue hood over somebody's
face more menacing than a giant metal face. Come
on now, Steve. I didn't say anything bad about
that. I know you did. No, I liked it, but you
got to also remember too, like in the Christmas
time of the nineties, I got the 12 inch Cobra
commander and he had, he didn't have that metal
face plate. He had the blue mask. And to me,
that character just looked awesome. And I was,
that was my bad guy of choice, you know, at that
time. And then I, I saw the, the metal, you know,
the armored suit that he got in the beginning
of the Deke series and kind of fluctuated between
the two. And then I saw a real American hero
and had the basic face plate. And I think what
took me out of it was there was no eyes, there
was no mouth, there was no, there was nothing,
nothing for like that facial reaction for Cobra
commander. And so that's why I gravitated towards
the Deke series. Plus the theme song I felt like
was better. And so not that, you know, I dislike
a real American hero because I like them both.
I'm just giving you crap, dude. Yeah, I know.
But I mean, the rest of the characters kind of
got a crap shoot overhaul. I mean, Duke got shafted
and Destro looks stupid. And, you know, well,
I mean, Duke should have just stayed dead instead
of having a heart attack coma. He went into a
coma. And it's funny because the way it's dubbed,
it looks stupid. Yeah, I know, right? I actually
do own all of both the G .I. Joe series on DVD,
as well as all of the Dungeons & Dragons and
a season of DuckTales. Only one on this group
that I don't own in physical media is Dragon
Ball Z. And I will say, I forgot that they did
have a reboot of the Dungeons & Dragons toys
recently. You could buy all of the main characters
about a year, two years ago at Target, Walmart.
So it was a weird... Reboot of the toys. Alright,
let's move on to the next. Wait, wait, wait.
Really quick. One last question. One last GI
Joe question. Are you guys reading the Skybound
Joe comics? You know I can't read, Mike. Okay,
good. Moving on. I should be. I probably would
enjoy them. I don't have time for that. I'll
figure it out later for you. I'll make time at
some point. All right, the next set of five,
we're going to call this like the cat group,
and I'm going to make that work for all of them.
Don't try any of this at home, kids. We're professionals.
Guess there's just no accounting for taste. I
think we need a little help. By the power of
Greyskull. Is this the lake where the monster
is supposed to live? Maybe that's why Chief Krimby
sent you up here. Don't be ridiculous. There
are no such thing as monsters. You can take my
word for that. There is absolutely nothing in
that lake. Thank you. I'm Jem. And these are
the holograms. You can't play here. This is my
invitation only. She invited us. Showtime synergy.
So in our next set of... Oh, God. All five of
these shows were on my original list. Four out
of the five made our original top 100. We're
going to start off with Garfield and Friends
from 1988, 121 episodes, a bunch of awards, made
three of the nine lists that we looked at. Then
we go to the usually forgotten other cat from
the 80s, the orange cat, which... I, at the time,
actually liked better. We're talking about Heathcliff
and the Cadillac Cats from 1984, which was awesome
with Don Messick and the like involved. 86 episodes
of that. It did appear on our, not our list,
but it appeared on one of the lists we looked
at. And then we have, of course, He -Man and
the Masters of the Universe, which we'll call
Battle Cat the cat in that one. So that was from
1983, 130 episodes. It was on seven of the nine
lists that we looked at. It only took us a decade,
folks. It only took us a decade. We can say Mad
Cat from Inspector Gadget also fits the cat theme.
So we got Inspector Gadget also from 1983, just
like He -Man. 86 episodes, some award nomination,
and it was on six of the nine lists that we looked
at. So a lot of acclaim from this set of five,
and the last one that rounds it up, and I have
no cat connection unless Mike can provide it
for me, we're talking about Gem from 1985. That
appeared on three of the nine lists. Was there
a cat in Gem? Was one of them a cat name? I believe
Pizazz had a cat, but I don't remember what the
cat's name was. All right. Well, the cat came
back. All right. So we got Garfield and Friends,
Heathcliff, He -Man, Inspector Gadget, and Gem.
I would say this is a pretty heavy hitting set
of five. I would make the case that... Our list
would be garbage if it didn't include He -Man.
Like, it 100 % needs to be on there. The others,
I can see a case being made for, and I can see
them not making it. So it's really going to depend
on who's doing the voting. But Garfield and Friends
definitely had some staying power. Like I said,
at the time, I liked Heathcliff better. I think
Garfield probably was more widely received. And
then Inspector Gadget. i believe should make
it but again i don't know there's only so many
spots gem it's pretty good cartoon for the female
audience of that generation that she were probably
the big two so i could see that making it but
i can also see it not making it so i don't know
mike what do you think of this set of five oh
boy i think they all should make it honestly
because the reasons why are the fact that garfield
and friends offered so much because you have
so many different personalities in that. You've
got Garfield and Odie, plus John's neuroses,
having to be the owner of those two pets. And
then you have the friends side of it. You have
the barnyard friends with all of those characters.
And that's so many different things. You have
so many different adventures you can go on. Heathcliff
and the Cadillac Cats, right? Yes, that was the
most successful version. Before you keep going,
I've got to correct myself. I misspoke. I said
Don Messick. I meant Mel Blanc. Okay. So with
Heathcliff and all of his shenanigans and all
his pals like Benny and all them, again, it's
a whole thing of, oh, my God, this is so cool.
This is so fun. And it's a great cartoon. It's
a cartoon that. Offered you so many different
personalities. This is why half the people that
we grew up with, us included, was why we all
have multiple personalities watching Garfield
and Heathcliff. Because of all the varying personalities
that are in these two cartoons alone. And then
you have He -Man and the Masters of the Universe.
And just listen to the Powers of Greyskull series,
folks. We spent nine and a half, ten years covering
He -Man and She -Ra. I mean, you know, it's just...
It came out a year before Transformers. It is
still, to this day, one of, if not the only,
sword and sorcery fantasy. Things I absolutely
love. Outside of Sword in the Stone. From 1964.
From Disney. Inspector Gadget? Yeah, okay, it
works. It's... basically get smart animated with
a niece sure cool great and then there's jim
and the hologram yeah okay thank you next time
gadget thank you uh -huh jim and the holograms
continue Yeah, yeah. Go drink some battery acid
so you can continue that. And then there's Jim
and the Holograms. And I am one of the biggest
proponents for Jim and the Holograms being a
show for... Yes, it is a show for girls and for
female empowerment of the 80s. But I also look
at that cartoon as a show for everyone because
they... Wrote it as, and I know this because
I've interviewed Christy Marks several times.
We did a whole Gem Showtime Synergy. We did a
whole Gem podcast. And this is the 40th anniversary
of Gem this year. I looked at that show as a
kid and now as an adult as a show for everybody.
Empowerment for everybody. Because it showed
you that you could literally do anything and
everything that you could do once you put your
mind to it. You know, kind of thing. The weird
thing that I just thought of to completely interrupt
you. If you take Keith Cliff and the Cadillac
Cats out of the mix, Garfield, He -Man, Inspector
Gadget, and Jem have all had a live action movie
based off of them. Yes, yes, they have. And they're
actually making another He -Man movie. It will
release just in time for this list, probably.
Supposedly. No, they're doing it. This is actually
happening this time. I've seen footage and stuff.
You've seen footage? It's literally going to
be released next year. Leaked shots. I will believe
it. Mike, they've already wrapped filming. I
will believe it when I see a trailer. Their main
two actors of Tila and He -Man even posted on
their social media that they had wrapped filming
like it's in the can. I will believe it when
they release a damn trailer. All right. Anyway,
continue. So see if you can give us. No, no,
no bet. But yeah, no, I think each one of these,
I don't know where they belong on our list, but
I do think they all do belong. At least I agree.
Or disagree, Steve. I could make a good case
for all of these being on the list. I did have
all but Jem on my original list. But Mike made
up for that because it was in Mike's top ten
last time. It'll be in the top ten this time,
too. Spoilers. Which one? Jem? Yeah. Good thing
I'm not putting it on. He's trying to carry the
sword for that one. Yeah. I had Heathcliff. At
55, I had Garfield. At 54, on my last list, I
had 61 for He -Man. And then Inspector Gadget,
I had at 23. And what's funny is, out of these
shows, two of which have had... Well, actually,
three of which have had modern iterations on
animation, and that would be He -Man, Inspector
Gadget, and Garfield. and in various degrees
but the version that like my kids have even seen
is the inspector gadget the old one yeah and
the garfield and friends and they both love both
those shows timeless somewhat timeless and again
like you know if if i were going to list these
it it's kind of a hard toss up here because they're
all pretty solid contenders right i probably
won't have room for jim but i could see where
the other ones would be solid contenders for
me just still like i i can still pick them up
and enjoy them today right i think that one's
this grouping is outside of maybe he -man for
me i think the other four really are going to
represent a numbers game at like is there enough
spots and and how does it all work out when you
try to crunch it all together so it'd be interesting
to see how how that plays out with everybody
for sure so that's the first set of 25 we'll
try to speed along here for the final 25 as much
as we can i know we're it's the 80s guys we're
going to talk a little bit about these yeah we're
going to talk a little bit we knew we knew going
going into this one that this one was going to
be a long session but that's okay about time
to get back through the mirror while I get the
Triforce. Illusion is the ultimate weapon. No
way, Fozzie. We don't accept imaginary money
on this flight. Huh? Excuse me, stewardess, but
is there a movie on this flight? Why, certainly.
Um, that's not quite what I had in mind. Look
at that rainbow go. Uh -huh. Just a couple more
clouds and we can start picking the cherries
for Cherries Jubilee. Woo -hoo! Nice job! It
sure was. Okay, rainbow of light, back where
you belong. Aw, come on, Megan. Cut loose. Have
some fun with this thing. The city of gold they
were talking about, do you think it really exists?
Oh, yes, it exists. Well, then you must know
where it is. If only I could be sure. The trouble
is that no one has ever succeeded in. Hmm. Alright,
the next set of five is as follows. We talked
about the cartoons based on video games. We'll
start with one of those, The Legend of Zelda
from 1989. Another action cartoon. Does it have
the staying power to outlast the other ones?
We'll find out. That is MASK, Mobile Armored
Strike Command. Is that what it stands for? Yes.
Okay. The Muppet Babies from 1984, all 107 episodes,
20 -plus award nominations and wins. It was on
five of the nine lists. I forgot to say Mask
was on three of the nine lists. The original
My Little Pony or My Little Pony and Friends,
whichever version you want to talk about, it's
all kind of the same thing. They ran together,
but this one is from 1986, and then I know this
one will fly under the radar for most folks.
Mike doesn't like it. I have a special spot for
this one in my heart. I don't even have to hear
you say what the name of it is. I'm just writing
it now. We could talk about Danger Mouse and
Count Duckula being a huge series for the UK.
This one was a huge series for our neighbors
to the south and also an entry point for a lot
of Americans into the world of anime, but I know
it's for the most part a hidden gem, I would
say, that's Mysterious Cities of Gold from 19.
82 so we have legend of zelda mask muppet babies
my little pony mysterious cities of gold for
me muppet babies is the one that would be a lock
i don't know if i have room for the rest of them
i would love to put mysterious cities of gold
on there but i know it'll be a futile vote and
then i think my little pony or my little pony
and friends probably gets squeezed out by a later
incarnation of my little pony that went bananas
as far as popularity goes so we'll talk about
that in a few episodes so i don't know if people
will have room for any of the original my little
ponies to to join the list so uh muppet babies
is probably the strongest contender for me mike
what do you think muppet babies and zelda zelda
was oh god again it's video games coming to life
in animation and the craziest thing about zelda
is It was only once a week on Fridays, you bastards.
So is Mask going from your top 10 to not on your
list this time? If it makes my list, it's going
to make it much lower. It's probably not going
to get number eight. Because again, like I said
in the last episode, in the pre -80s episode,
my list this time around, it's going to be much
different. I may still have some of the same
things that I had. on my list from 2011 but they're
not going to be in the same order right the legend
of zelda the coolest thing super mario brothers
show was 89 right or 90 super mario brothers
was 89 they both were yeah that's what i thought
that's what i thought so when the super mario
brothers super show debuted in 1989 it was four
days a week monday through thursday well technically
it was monday through friday but the mario cartoon
was monday through thursday and on fridays we
got zelda And it was like, wait, what? This is
the coolest thing ever. We get Zelda on Fridays,
but crap, we got to wait a week for Friday for
Zelda? Steve, any thoughts on this set of five?
I only listed one out of these five on my original
list. Was that Papa Baby's? Yep, that was the
only one. And it's the original one. I know they've
rebooted this particular one. as well as like
my little pony. And, uh, I know that they're
doing a legend of Zelda, uh, either film or animated
thing, kind of like the super Mario brothers,
but I'm, I don't know. I'm, I'm cautiously optimistic
on that front. But as far as these shows, I,
I feel like any of these five could easily be
either forgotten or left off, just people not
knowing about them or. right associating with
the latest rendition of it especially being that
we're doing this list 15 years after the original
and people might be more familiar with you know
the new my little pony or the the new muppet
babies as opposed to the originals from the 80s
yeah very well could play a factor sometimes
that can hurt and sometimes it can help it's
it's always hard to say but it'll be interesting
to see how this set of five plays out i think
the next set of five is Potentially going to
have an uphill battle to try to make a dent in
our list. We'll see if you guys agree or not.
If you hadn't forced me to compete, Ben, and
I would never have crashed. I was found and rebuilt.
They turned me into something half man, half
machine. A cyborg. So I now work for the foreign
government that saved me. Now my nightmares make
sense. Well, this is no dream, fly guy. I got
your computer and I got you. Come on. This way.
Come along, piglet. Oh, dear. If only such very
small animals didn't have such very short legs.
Hurry, Piglet. No time to be brave. Oh, no. Where
can we go? What can we do? How can we hide? Terrifying,
isn't it? Quick. Under here. At first glance,
the evergreen forest appears peaceful and calm.
But beneath the placid exterior, the inhabitants
have been quietly preparing to give Cyril Sneer
a shocking surprise he won't soon forget. I'd
be very surprised if we catch anything today.
Maybe we should give up on the fishing and go
back to working on the plan. Do you think it
will really teach Cyril a lesson? Once and for
all. That's for sure. Did you hear? You never...
I hit him. I knew those meddling raccoons were
up to no good. You still want to save this world,
little wiz? Yes. It's even worse close up. Find
the light and the color of this land and set
it free. And the darkness will disappear. Where
do I start? Look for the sphere of light. Are
you still there? Yo, Shampoo. Okay, there's this
really funny story I've been wanting to tell
you. It goes like this. The next set of five
includes The New Adventures of Johnny Quest from
1986, The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh from
1988. Did have some award love and did make one
of the lists that we looked at. I think just
like we talked about with Danger Mouse for the
UK, maybe Mysterious Cities of Gold for Mexico,
you could definitely make a case for The Raccoons
for Canada. being one of the huge shows up there.
This one debuted in 1985. Rainbow Bright, 1984,
another one of the female -centric cartoons we
got during the 80s. And then this one I am still
somewhat ignorant on. I haven't caught up with
it in the 15 years that we've had to catch up
on some of the anime, but this is, I'm going
to probably even say it wrong, Ranma 1 .5? Yes.
okay so that is the five that we're looking at
here i would say just based on my exposure i
know there's a lot of love for winning the poo
i don't think rainbow bright has stayed in the
self you know in the consciousness of pop culture
enough i think raccoons probably gets forgotten
because it was more canadian centric even though
i think it is a worthy cartoon but i don't know
if i could make a strong case for any of these
being in my top 100 steve what do you think so
New Adventures of Johnny Quest, I intermittently
watch more so if there was nothing better for
me to watch, that's what would get turned on.
The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh is probably
the one I'm the most familiar with, just having
grown up with it and had like all the VHS tapes
because that's what my mom bought. My kids grew
up with it, too. So that's that's something else
that that we had in common. Voice acting was
great in it. Animation was better than the old
stuff. So it was just it was just a lot of fun
to watch. The Raccoons and Rainbow Bright. I
am not familiar with either of these. So they
wouldn't be on my personal list just for that
alone. Like I. yeah i i think you know rainbow
bright i think of like the light bright like
that's that's where my mind goes and then and
then of course like the ranma one and one half
i recently just because i've been watching like
when i ran out of dragon ball super i just started
watching random animes on some anime sites and
uh this was one of them i'd watched i'd heard
about it before and it's it's basically about
a martial artist like dad and son that are uh
there's like a cursed pool like water pool type
thing and somewhere in china and the the dad
accidentally knocks the sun in and it's like
the most absurd like different pools so like
there's a curse of you know drowned pig or you
know drowned girl or you know something panda
or you know and so like the dad you know knocks
the sun in and he falls in the one that is the
drowned girl and so like when he gets you know
cold water or hot water i can't remember which
one one of the two it turns him into a girl and
the other one turns him into a boy and then and
then his dad turns into a panda like a giant
like giant fat panda and then like he's supposed
to be betrothed to like some girl and some family
and shows up and he's a girl and so it creates
this weird dynamic throughout the entire series
of all these other people that are trying to
get the the girl that he's supposed to be betrothed
to. And so it's, it's, it's an interesting and
funny, like cop comedic series just because the
dynamic that he's just kind of forced to deal
with the situation. And I know by the end, Jack
Blackwood star in, you know, you never know,
but they, I know that there was a dub of it and
it's on to be for free, but the, they redubbed
it. And the first season is on Netflix. oh gotcha
gotcha i like that the fact that you're gonna
have i feel like you already have way more knowledge
on anime than we did 15 years ago so i've been
trying about that i feel good about that mike
what did you think about this set of five i was
never like johnny was just i don't know it was
okay it was good it deserves a place i don't
know if i'm gonna vote for it new adventures
of winning the poo was awesome It's probably
the only one in this set. I've never seen the
raccoons. Hell, the only person besides you that
even mentioned the raccoons to us was David Dennis
back in the day. The crazy thing about raccoons
is the main villain was always smoking. It would
never be made like that today. Well, that's what
anime is for. Exactly. Uh, rainbow bright. I
had seen like maybe two episodes when I was a
kid. It is what it is. And I've never seen this
anime. So there we go. It's a nice little section,
but yeah, Winnie the Pooh is probably the only
one that I would vote for. All right. I think
you guys will have a little bit more to say about
potential list makers in this next set of five.
So let's take a look at that. I'm sure we brought
you a little surprise. Uh, guys, how sweet. You're
right. I am surprised. What is it? Guess she's
allergic to chocolate. No, they're empty. Empty?
Except one. Slime! I've been slimed. Yuck. The
countdown has begun. On board the giant spaceship,
the crew of raw recruits freshly graduated from
the Robotech Academy is busy with the pre -launch
checklist. All manual systems are green light.
The ceremony starts in 15 minutes. I hope the
captain gets here in time. I hear he didn't get
much sleep last night. Yeah, the other officers
threw a farewell party for him. They probably
sat up all night telling each other war stories.
You know how they are. And where were you, Claudia?
What are you talking about, Lisa? You didn't
come in until four this morning. You must have
been partying, too. You jealous? I had a late
dinner with Commander Foker. Claudia! What? You
stayed out all night knowing you both had flight
duty today. So? What's the big fuss about, Lisa?
We won't let it affect the performance of our
duty. After all, we're not children and you're
not our mother. Your responsibilities to the
ship come first, Claudia. But my private life
is my business. Nobody else's. Now then, let's
get to work, all right? I think it's time for
She -Ra. Wind approaching. Wing it. You listen
to me, son. You've just started school, and the
path you choose now may be the one you follow
for the rest of your life. Now, what do you say?
Eat my shorts. All right, I'll eat your shorts.
Yeah, eat my shorts. Butt man. Butt man. Butt
man. We have, starting off with the 1986 show,
The Real Ghostbusters, 147 episodes, a couple
awards. It was on four of the nine lists that
we looked at. We have Robotech from 1985, 85
episodes. It was on three of the nine lists that
we looked at. We have She -Ra, Princess of Power
from 1985 as well on a couple of the lists we
looked at. And we have Silverhawks from 1986.
It appeared on two of the nine lists we looked
at. And then I don't really know if there's any
point of conversing on the fifth one, but that
would be the 1989 debut of the Simpsons, which
may or may not have 170 or some awards. And it
was on all nine lists that we looked at. And
obviously it's going to make our top 100. So
we have the real Ghostbusters, Robotech, She
-Ra, Silverhawks, and the Simpsons. Steve, what
do you think about this set? I think for sure.
At least half of these are going to show up in
the list. I imagine real Ghostbusters will show
up. I imagine that for some of the anime people,
Robotech will show up depending on their flavor
of mechs and anime. She -Ra will probably show
up in some of the lists just because it was kind
of a different alternative to He -Man back in
the day. Silverhawks is the one that I think
is the wild card here of will it, won't it? Yeah.
Simpsons, everybody's going to have that. Except
for those that have not seen it. Makes sense.
All five of these were on our original list.
I think it comes down to a numbers game with
a couple of them, especially Silverhawks. Like
you said, I think that might be the one at risk
the most, unless there's just not enough anime
fans to vote Robotech in. But I feel like Real
Ghostbusters and Simpsons probably locked. Simpsons
for sure. Real Ghostbusters probably. And I think
She -Ra, because of the females, skew to it may
be able to elevate over a couple of the other
boys action cartoons that we've looked at it
might be able to edge out the likes of cops brave
star silver hawks things of that nature so we'll
have to wait and see mike what do you think of
this set of five yeah i agree it's did you just
agree with me yes i do that sometimes you know
again it we we we've been saying this for a week
and a half since we recorded the last episode
we knew going into the planning of this whole
five episode podcast series that we knew episode
two, the 1980s was going to be a bloodbath. And
this is, is part of it. Here's my question about
the Simpsons. The Simpsons has had in almost
40 years. What are they, over 700, 800 episodes
now? I know they're over 700. Last I counted,
it was like 764 or something like that. Okay,
fine. They're close. But they're over 700. They're
almost 800, let's say. In all of those episodes,
in all of these years, I don't think I can consciously
rate it in the top 10 anymore. On my personal
list, I can rate it within the top 25. But I
don't think I can consciously rate it in the
top ten anymore because I've checked in with
the show here and there, but I haven't consciously
watched the show since probably season seven
or maybe season eight. Like, I've caught episodes
here or there, but it hasn't been something that
I've watched religiously like it was in the mid
-90s. 94, 95 was the last time, 96, last time
I actively was sitting in front of my TV every
Sunday at 8 p .m. Eastern. There you go. I haven't
even, like, I just haven't even really, like,
so that's my question with The Simpsons. Are
we rating, are we going to see Versa, because...
If I remember correctly, Batman the Animated
Series was number two and Simpsons was number
one on the original list, right? Batman the Animated
Series was number one. Really? Simpsons was our
number two. What you just said was what IGN had.
IGN had Simpsons 1 and Batman 2. Okay, okay,
okay. Okay, but either way, point is, is Simpsons
still that good of a show? to have it be after
all these years the number one best animated
series ever i think some would make the argument
that it doesn't have to be anymore because even
if you just took the first 20 seasons it's gonna
be warranting enough just based off of that i
don't know like i i can't speak for simpsons
because i've never seen an episode right well
okay well fine steve i me personally i I don't
know if I would list it in the top 10 anymore.
I, I, and I do think the first like 20 or so
seasons was, you know, worth it as far as that.
However, anymore, like I, I just don't, I don't,
I don't think, I think it's definitely top 20
worthy. I don't think it's top 10 worthy. Here's
what I'm going to do. We have a roadmap of when
we are doing the top 100 animated series next
year, of when the production for that's going
to happen. I'm not going to say anything more
than that, but we have a roadmap, folks. I am
going to take the rest of 2025. I'm going to
go on Disney +, and I'm going to start from the
beginning, and I'm going to watch as much Simpsons
as I possibly can to make my own determination.
Of whether I think it personally belongs within
even a top 20. There we go. I like it. And I
hope to get as far as I can get between now and
the time we start. Because, like I said, when
I was a kid, 1989, I've told this story before.
I was at my... With my dad and my then stepmother.
Thank God she's not my stepmother now. But we
were at her brother's house or we were at her
friend's house. We were somewhere. And it was
like, I think it was the debut. I think it was
Santa's Little Helper, the debut episode. Why
don't you watch it? I don't know. It's the Simpsons.
And Homer said something or Homer grunted or
Homer did something. Oh, my God. You're watching
junk on television. This happened twice. Quite
literally, number one and number two. I got banned
from watching from my stepmother, The Simpsons
and Batman the Animated Series, because she didn't
like it. She thought it was too violent. And
I'm sitting here thinking, are you kidding me,
lady? I sat through Transformers. I sat through
He -Man. I sat through G .I. Joe when I was three,
four, five, and six. Simpsons at nine years old?
Batman at 12 years old? Get off my fucking lawn,
people. Like, come on. I think if you watch four
episodes a day, you may be able to get through
the whole thing. All right, so let's go ahead
and reveal the next set of five. Yes, next set
of five. Jokey smurf. One of these days, you're
gonna get it. All -Star, Sam Waters is here and
wants to meet you. Sam, I'll let you two get
acquainted. Hi, All -Star, honey. You're Sam?
But I thought you... Oh, the name's Sam. But
you're... really a girl my name confuses lots
of folks it's short for samantha oh oh This is
my pet octopus, Aki. Aki? We've been getting
your room into shape. Just let me know if there's
anything else I can do. Well, there is one teeny
tiny favor you could do for a visiting country
girl. Just say the word. Well, I was hoping to
see the premiere of the Snorkbusters movie Saturday
night. Would you mind taking me? Mind? Of course
not. I'd be glad to. If you can make it to the
tunnel, it's a clean getaway. Yeah, but I can
hardly see. Can I do your windshield? The wall
crawler. The webhead. Just your friendly neighborhood
Spider -Man. Turn there. Just your friendly neighborhood
dummy. Mario. Mario, come here. We have a guest.
This is my brother Mario. Mario, this is Patty,
the sad -eyed orphan. Nice to meet you, Patty,
the sad -eyed orphan. Where are you from? Well,
I've been drifting for about six months, you
know, living off the land. Life is tough when
you don't have any parents to love and take care
of you. Nobody even cares that today is my birthday.
Oh, wait a minute, wait a minute. Wipe away those
tears, little one. For you're the best birthday
party you've ever seen. You mean it? With a birthday
cake and party hats and noisemakers and a VCR
and a high -definition color TV monitor? Hey,
that's asking a lot, kid. I mean, we're just
plumbers. Whoever pulls out that plunger will
be crowned our real king and become powerful
enough to drive Koopa away. Murphy, old pal,
your problems are solved. I've been unclogging
sinks since I was knee -high to a Togolini. Stand
back, gang. The sink hasn't been built that Mario
can't unclog. Hey! Nice plumbing here, old guy.
Dust off the crown and call out the town. Camelot
has a new king. You're not human. Bingo. We're
dealing with a real mind here. Tonight I dine
on turtle soup. Uh, April? What? We're here.
Oh. Ninja dry cleaners? Ninja shoe repairs? Ninja
video rentals? Ninja dentist? Ow! I can't put
my finger on it, but there's something suspicious
about this neighborhood. Hi -yah! Hey, come on.
I'm starving, guys. Don't you guys think about
anything but pizza? Not unless we have to. Welcome
to Ninja Pizza, home of the nice slice. This
will be an interesting group to get your guys'
reaction. We have the 1981 series Smurfs, aired
256 episodes, seven different awards. It was
on six of the nine lists. We have the often imitated
but never duplicated, I guess. We have the Snorks
from 1984, right next to that. We have Spider
-Man and His Amazing Friends from 1981, which
made our original list, as did the Smurfs. We
have the Super Mario Bros. Super Show, which
made our original list. That's from the 1989,
just like we talked about with Zelda. And then
we have the 1987 series that was on eight of
the nine lists that we looked at, the Teenage
Mutant Ninja Turtles. So Smurfs, Snorks, Spider
-Man, Mario Brothers, and Teenage Mutant Ninja
Turtles. Mike, we'll start with you. What do
you think about those five? Oh, boy. Snorks over
Smurfs, Spider -Man in last place, SMB somewhere
in the middle, and TMNT at least the top 20,
if not the top 15. Did you say you're voting
for Snorks ahead of Smurfs? Oh, hell yes. Any
day. You know this. We've talked about this for
the 17, 18 years we've known each other. I've
always liked Snorks over Smurfs. I like Snorks
too. I'm not putting it over Smurfs. Oh, yeah.
I will put it over Smurfs any day. You will be
the only one that does that. That's fine. So
you think, how many of these five do you think
have a chance? I think they all have a chance,
except maybe Super Show. I don't know if Super
Show can make it. I think if we get older fans,
Spider -Man 81 is going to make it. Again, I
don't know because we get Spider -Man 67, we
get Spider -Man 81. I know next time we're going
to have Spider -Man. If we don't have Spider
-Man 94, we're going to be... Spider -Man was
the most frequent franchise that appeared on
our original Top of the Mountain. We had four
different Spider -Mans. Steve, with the 15 more
extra years of comic book... especially superhero
cartoons that we've got from both marvel and
dc does it start to become harder for a show
like the 81 spider -man to make the list ultimately
yes i in particular with this show like i'm not
even considering anything before the 1980s for
uh superhero shows because there's so much of
a gold mine in the 90s And some of it in the
early 2000s and 2010s, there's other stuff that's
been produced in that time span. And I feel like
90s was peak superhero animation. And there have
been other things that have peaked after that
point. But I feel like that was the peak of the
superhero animation in the middle of this. uh
this list here the this show in particular i
don't see many knowing what it is or uh having
heard of it especially the younger that they
are uh those of us that are older will remember
these type of shows but i i think that the earliest
far back that they're going to go is the 90s
in terms of that as far as the other shows i
had in the original top 100 because i have i
don't i don't love smurfs Or Snorks. But I listed
in the original, I think I listed Snorks above
Smurfs because I did not like either as much.
But I knew that I had to represent one of them.
And I honestly preferred the Snorks. And then
looking back at it and comparing the two and
the theme song, the Snorks is annoying. no it
wasn't it is no and smurfs is too like with the
modern live action films but i feel like that
is going to carry that show onto a lot of people's
lists because they'll have gone back and watched
it because of the live action films right i think
someone could make the argument that they enjoyed
snorts better i think someone could even make
the argument maybe i don't know i'd have to really
dissect them that snorts could have been even
more quality at times of a show Maybe, maybe
not. I don't know. I think the thing that Smurfs
has going for it is the staying power. It was
on for a decade. It's had multiple movies come
out since then. I think it's had the bigger impact
as far as that goes, where I think Snorks has
somewhat been forgotten, kind of like Brave Star
has or like Cops has. So I think that's one thing
that it may have going against it. Steve, what
are your thoughts on Mario Brothers and Turtles?
Super Mario Brothers, I feel like if it's going
to get noticed, it'll be because again, the recent
CG movie that came out, people might search this
out. This one was honestly, in my opinion, better
than the one where they had Yoshi and Super Mario
Brothers World. Super Mario World. I don't know.
I enjoyed it. I showed the intro to my kids with
the... uh the live action portion and they're
like what the heck is this and and i was like
this is just this is what they did back then
i was like you know it gets into it and they
they enjoyed it for what it is and then like
ninja turtles like who doesn't love that between
the theme song alone and then like the animation
the fun of it like the goofiness i've shown like
turtles forever where you know they get to mixed
with the 2003 turtles. And then of course the
2012 turtles where these turtles are in, in a
couple episodes with, you know, crying and shredder
and you know, the 87 verse in, in that. And they
just, they eat it up. They love the 87 stuff.
And, and I do too. Like I had every of the. the
figure and it has the staying power. It's what
gave the longevity of the franchise and all the
various reboots that it's gone through. And yeah,
I just, I, this one over any of the others, I
feel like is going to make the list. Oh yeah,
absolutely. Yeah. Turtles 87. It was everything.
Then it's everything. Now I remember every single
BK VHS I got. Like nobody, man, like every, oh
God, the Burger King Kids Club VHSs. And I remember
you could go to every single toy store and buy
those figures back then for $5. You can't buy
action figures for $5 today. But Playmates Toy
still sells the Turtles figures for $9 .97 at
Walmart. Okay, fine. Much better than Super 7.
Yes, it's better than Super 7. Anything is better
than Super 7. Plus, they're coming out with new
versions of... They're re -releasing all the
old stuff, but it's cool to see them come out
with it. It's the same price point, same boxes,
same everything. They're just rehashing it, which
is great if you missed out on it. And then, of
course, there's the higher quality. Not the Super
7, but there's another brand that does... They're
kind of like the mid... But they do a better
job at making them look like the animation models
and stuff like that. But no, I think that Turtles
87 is going to definitely play a part. Absolutely,
it better. All right, that means it's only time.
There's only room for five more nominees that
you could vote on for your list from the 80s,
and those five shows are as follows. The Fat
Controller was waiting anxiously for them. Well,
Thomas, he said, I've heard all about it and
I'm very pleased with you. You're a really useful
engine. Now, trucks are silly and noisy. They
talk a lot and don't attend to what they are
doing. And I'm sorry to say they play tricks
on an engine who is not used to them. Edward
knew all about trucks. He warned Thomas to be
careful, but Thomas was too excited to listen.
The shunter fastened the coupling, and when the
signal dropped, Thomas was ready. The guard blew
his whistle. Peep, peep, answered Thomas, and
started off. What? Thunder! Thunder! Thunder!
Thundercats! Ha! Come on, Optimus, tell me, why
do you want this metal? How will it be used?
Why is it so precious? I've explained it to you.
You told me it was important, but you didn't
tell me why. That's because I know you too well,
Galvatron. They had taken control of all their
sources of energy and enjoyed a life of comfort
and ease for 7 ,000 years. But this was not to
last. For the realignment of the three blazing
suns of Prismos signaled the end of the age of
science and technology. Ready to form Voltron.
Activate interlock. Dynatherms connected. Infracells
up. Megathrusters are go. Let's go, Voltron!
First one might sound weird, but outside of Simpsons,
there's no other show that we talked about today
that aired more episodes than this one. That's
the 1984 series Thomas and Friends. Almost 600
episodes of that has aired. We have the classic
Thundercats from 1985. It was on six of the nine
lists we looked at. We have the classic Transformers
G1 from 1984, which was on six of the nine lists
that we looked at. We have the... Hidden Gem,
I would say, that often gets forgotten. The Visionaries,
Knights of the Magical Light from 1987. Short
-lived show, but it was pretty decent quality.
And then we have another anime entry with the
1984 series Voltron, which appeared on four of
the nine lists that we looked at. So Thomas and
Friends, Thundercats, Transformers, Visionaries,
and Voltron. I will start if we were making a
top 180s show. or a top 50s 80s show countdown
of some sort visionaries would definitely make
my list i would say it has no shot in hell of
making the top 100 i think a lot of people discount
some of the more educational shows so thomas
and friend is probably in an uphill battle unintended
and then we have thundercats transformers and
voltron to me this again i think these three
might be able to elevate themselves over the
likes of cops brave star Some of these other
ones that there may not be enough room for this
many 80s action shows. So I think Transformers
is a lock. I think Thundercats has a pretty decent
chance and Voltron has a pretty decent chance.
So those would probably be the three that I would
consider. Mike, what do you think? Yeah, I agree.
I absolutely agree. Short and sweet. I like it.
Even with... I'm not done yet. Okay. even with
like Transformers specifically 98 episodes, even
with some of the filler episodes that are in
it, some of the one -off episodes that are in
it, some of the episodes that are in it, it still
has really good things in that cartoon. Thundercats.
Same thing, the epic stories that Thundercats
told, the multi -part. I think Thundercats has
a lot more four -part arcs than some of the other
ones. Maybe I'm wrong in that, but I remember
at least three four -part arcs in Thundercats
out of their episodes, and Voltron is just Voltron.
I think the only thing with Voltron that some
people will have to decide is, Maybe they only
have room for one Voltron, and there's been like
four or five different iterations of Voltrons.
I could see that splitting the vote a little
bit, but it is like the main original one, so
it's hard to say. But Transformers has some of
the same going against, you know, there's been
a lot of different versions of Transformers.
I think it still has enough staying power that
we don't have to worry about it not making the
countdown. Thundercats has had more iterations
than stuff like Silverhawk, so I can see that
being more in the presence of people's mind,
maybe. Yeah. Well, and again, well, Silverhawks
has never had a reboot animation wise. Mind boggling.
It's got a comic book currently. And they say
there's a live action movie eventually going
to happen. Yeah. Again, show me a trailer and
I'll believe you. It hasn't wrapped. No. Funny.
Again, show me a trailer and I'll believe you.
But it's one of those things where. I mean, Thundercats
right now has a comic. Thundercats and Silverhawks
both have comics currently based on, I believe,
their classic series. Transformers, yes, it has
multiple animated series throughout its 41 -year,
42 -year history, but specifically these nominations
are for the 80s versions of it. So when we get
to the episode for the nominations of the 2010s
to present, we're going to have a whole bunch
of other things going on. And I still think that
the Generation 1 cartoon, in a lot of people's
minds that we reach out to, might still be there,
even though... people are going to vote Beast
Wars or Beast Machines or Transformers Animated.
I think that those are going to be the main ones
that people are going to choose. I don't think
they're going to choose much past Animated. Maybe
Prime. I would put Prime leagues ahead of Animated.
Steve, go ahead with your thoughts on these five.
Past that, though. Go ahead, Steve. I could see
the case for Thomas and Friends. However, one,
I haven't cared about that show since George
Carlin was gone off of it. That's when I watched
it. Two, I think it's going to hit an uphill
battle with educational shows in general just
not showing up. And then I think Visionaries.
Unless you grew up with it, I don't feel like
you're going to know what it is, plus being one
season. I feel like the least amount of episodes
it is, the harder it's going to be to show up
on the list. And the more episodes it is, the
more likely you're going to see it. And in this
case, I know Thomas and Friends has the highest
hit count here, but Thundercats, Transformers,
and Voltron are the only ones that are... pretty
high on the list with Transformers trailing at
the bottom of those three. And I feel like Transformers,
just because it's had so many iterations, so
many reboots, the live action stuff, everything,
that one's going to be the one that beats out
of these three. And then it's going to be kind
of neck and neck with Thundercats and Voltron,
just because there's been variations of Voltron.
There's been, you know, a variation of Thundercats
in the more recent years. And I think Transformers
is, I mean, there's definitely going to be, a
bias from from us us three at least on the transformers
front and i'm pretty sure most people are going
to list transformers it'll just be a toss of
which one yeah see that for sure so steve a question
for you as we kind of reflect on this set of
50 that people are going to be able to vote on
from this time period as part of their 100 in
the original top 100 if my count is right and
don't quote me on this because it's somewhat
quickly put together i believe in our original
top 100 we had 29 shows from the 1980s do you
think that number stays the same goes up or goes
down in this new iteration i think it'll go down
how much do you think it'll go down i think if
it's at 29 i think we're gonna hit like 20 21
okay um at at most i i think there'll be a pretty
heavy bias to the 90s and the 2000s with possibly
some stuff in the 2010s, I feel like those three
decades are going to dominate this go around
just because of, you know, people's change in
tastes and, you know, better quality of some
shows coming out or new renditions or some of
the older shows just being forgotten. So I think
we're going to end up with a pretty 90s, 2000s,
and 2010s dominated list here on this updated
version. Mike, what do you think? Yeah, I kind
of agree. I think it is going to go down maybe
to about, like Steve said, 2021. If it was even
across all five time periods, which it won't
be, but if it was the exact same thing, then
we would have 20 from each time period, right?
So that would be like the base level, and then
we'll have to see which ones fall below that,
which ones go above that. But continue your thoughts.
I was going to say my comedy prediction, it's
the 13 ghosts of Scooby -Doo, don't you know?
So I guess I could predict 13 again. The 13 ghosts
of Scooby -Doo. I don't think it'll go that low.
Your list single -handedly will do everything
in its power to make sure that it's not all the
way down to 13. We'll have to wait and see how
it all plays out, but that is your 50 nominated
shows from the 1980s. Mike, get us out of here.
Yeah, we got to pay some bills first, so we're
going to do that. You're not doing any AI junk
this time around? No, we'll save that for ones
that we're not going to be able to fill two hours
of conversation with. Okay, well, there you go.
See? There you go, folks. We need two -hour podcasts
every time. We don't need AI when we're experts
on this topic. There you go. Exactly. We're experts
on all the other topics, too. All right, folks.
Quick ads right after this. We'll be right back.

are you doing? Trying to make our spot sound
more exciting by adding explosions. Yeah, I'm

with sound effects, not the real thing. Car,
car. Download the show on iTunes or at simplisticreviews
.blogspot .com. I'm sure your insurance company
will cover that. No, they won't. No, they probably
won't. Show's over, Synergy. We now return to
the Transformers. All right, folks, we are back
here on part two of the Top 100 Animated Series
nominees. Any final thoughts, Optimus Solo? I
just am intrigued to see if it goes up or down
from the last time I'm with Steve. I think it'll
go down. I don't know if it'll go down from 29
to 20, but I could see it somewhere maybe in
the middle or close to 20, I guess. But I'm intrigued.
I'm intrigued to see because I think some of
these are definitely going to. feel the crunch
the number crunch when it comes down to people
is trying to make their last they're going to
get to like the 90th spot in their countdown
and there's only going to be 10 spots left and
it's going to be like what i did the original
time where i have like 30 i'm trying to crunch
into 10 spots and math just doesn't work that
way so it'll be interesting to see which ones
get booted out and which ones make the cut for
people yep yep you said number crunch all i heard
in my head was nestle crunch i need chocolate
damn it all right steve any final thoughts I'd
just be interested to see how people enjoy what
this list is and to see what actually shows up
on the new top 100 animated series countdown.
