We gathered on Altered Geek to unpack the chaos of San Diego Comic-Con 2026. Between massive Marvel announcements, unexpected Spaceballs news, and the endless exhaustion of modern toy pre-orders, there was a lot to dig through.
When San Diego Comic-Con rolls around, you brace yourself for the onslaught of news. On a recent episode of Altered Geek, TFG1Mike, and I sat down to sort through everything that came out of the convention floor and Hall H this year. Naturally, a lot of the oxygen got sucked right out of the room by the sheer weight of the Marvel machine.
I will be the first to admit that it feels like everything else gets completely overshadowed by Marvel when July rolls around. Hardcore. You try to look at the broader picture, but the news cycle just bends toward whatever Kevin Feige and company brought to the stage.
Take the big Hall H Marvel presence, for instance. The Avengers: Doomsday trailer finally dropped, putting Thor front and center and bringing back Chris Evans at the very end. On top of that, the big casting reveal confirmed that Ryan Gosling is stepping into the MCU as Ghost Rider under Shawn Levy’s direction. It is a massive swing, and people are going to argue about it for months.
Over on the DC side, the Absolute Universe panel made some noise with the announcement of the Absolute Batman Beyond Arkham Special from Snyder, Frank Thierry, and Francisco Francivillo. When you see a title pop up with that kind of creative pedigree and familiar aesthetic, you pay attention. Even if you hold your breath hoping they actually nail the Terry-ish vibe.
Then there was the surprise pop culture nostalgia. The Spaceballs 2 panel brought out Josh Gad, who made it clear he is playing a brand new Mog in the film out of absolute respect for John Candy, declining to touch the role of Barf. You have to respect that kind of boundary.
Of course, we could not talk about a convention without getting into the absolute headache that is modern toy collecting. Mike and I spent a good chunk of time venting about pre-order culture and the death of traditional retail peg hunting. Hasbro did drop some cool stuff for fans, including a seven-figure Beast Wars Maximal set with the correct paint decos to celebrate the 30th anniversary. It is a great nod to the fans, even if it feels like it is flying under the radar compared to the massive marketing push for the Generation 1 film’s 40th anniversary.
Trying to keep up with collector releases right now feels like a second job. Between battling instant sell-outs online and hunting down physical media upgrades like the Masters of the Universe 4K Blu-ray releases, the hobby demands a lot of patience. But that is why we talk about it. Tune into the full episode if you want to hear us hash out the rest of the convention madness.
