Smith, Angelina Jolie, Renee Zellweger, Jack

Black, Martin Scorsese, and Robert De Niro. Your

Huh? What'd he do? What'd he do? I can't see

it! Hello and welcome to episode 41 of Tooncast

Beyond, brought to you by the GeekCaster Radio

Network and Audible .com. I am your host, TfG

and Mike, and joining me is Steve Megatron. Hello.

Howdy, howdy, howdy, howdy. And today, oh god,

we're going to be talking about Sharktail. Whose

tail? When I re -watched this I was like, oh

are you serious? How did this, we'll explore

this, but how the fuck did this movie get made?

Because it's a DreamWorks film? Yeah, and Dreamworks

makes their money off parodying other or copying

ideas from other studios and other films Yeah,

I guess that's a good enough example At least

in the animation department. Yes. Well, yeah.

Yeah Alright, so to set it up here for setting

the stage Shark Tale is a 2004 American computer

animated comedy film produced by DreamWorks Animation.

In the story, a young fish named Oscar voiced

by Will Smith falsely claims to have killed the

son of a shark mob boss to win favor with the

mob boss's enemies and advance his own community

standing. The film additionally features the

voices of Jack Black as Lenny, Renee Zellweger

as Angie, Angelina Jolie as Lola, Martin Scorsese

as Sykes, and Robert De Niro as Don Lino. Despite

the film's negative reviews, Chartel proved to

be a box office success, opening at number one

with $47 .6 million, which was the second highest

opening for a DreamWorks animated film at the

time, behind Shrek 2, $108 million. It remained

as the number one film in the US and Canada for

its second and third weekends, and made $367

million worldwide against its $75 million budget.

It was also nominated for the Academy Award for

Best Animated Feature. Why? What? It was nominated.

It was an okay cartoon film, but it was by no

means, you know, a best animated feature. Oh,

God. I think Pixar pretty much runs with that

one. At least in most categories. Well, I was

just trying to think of 2004. What the hell did

they have out? uh... was a toy story two in two

thousand four uh... new i think that i forget

i don't know why are i know cars was two thousand

six i don't remember what what picture and two

thousand four and i'm not looking at the the

not looking up at the moment i am i absolutely

have i remember just just cringing away from

this movie when i first saw the trailers And

yes, I know, that's the way I am, I base everything

on the trailer, but it was like when I saw the

trailer and I saw what it was supposed to be,

it was like, oh hey, here's Will Smith as this

fish character, which the fish face looks just

like Will Smith's real face. There's a fishy

situation. But um, no, Toy Story 2 actually came

out in 99. 99, that's right. This was immediately

following the year of Finding Nemo. Oh, yeah.

OK, yeah, yeah. Which also had the best animated

feature, which it won. Best original screenplay,

score, sound editing, et cetera, et cetera, which,

you know, that's pretty much what DreamWorks

runs with. The same year Pixar had The Incredibles.

That's right. Which still stopped this movie

pretty... badly, because it won the animated

feature that year, the sound editing, and it

was nominated for screenplay and sound mixing.

It's still lost to Pixar, which is no surprise.

Finding Nemo was May of 03 and then The Incredibles

was November of 04. So this was smack in the

middle. Yeah. I would much rather watch a heartwarming

story about a Father fish looking for searching

for his son versus a shark mob movie Yeah, I'd

have to agree. That's essentially what this movie

is is it's a movie with a fish community that

a majority of them are mobsters It's that whole

mob mentality. How the hell they got Scorsese

and De Niro as as voices just blows my mind They

weren't doing nothing around that time. But still...

Well, they also had the Godfather kind of jokes

and all that kind of stuff so that of course

they had to get, you know, mobster guys. They

didn't have to, but they did. They had some money

to throw at them. Yeah, I don't know. It was

nominated for a lot of stuff. uh... it was the

uh... it was uh... and what they did a lot of

kids towards the words and that's true and they're

casting but for us you know it's uh... speaking

of the casting let's talk about the voice cast

uh... i mean all of these people that are in

this voice cast or amazing amazing actors and

actresses they're all well known i mean that

this is you know continuing the trend of uh...

where we talked about an episode thirty eight

with ants where that movie had uh... what uh...

i i i i almost had a willie allen woody alabama

uh... you know head what the allen uh... sharon

stone so that's just alone this one's continuing

that trend of haze super celebrities as voice

actors with uh... will smith robert de niro renee

zellweger jack blackley uh... uh... angelina

jolie martin Scorsese hey you have katey current

as katie current you have peter falk phil lamar

traditional voice actor yes uh... he was the

uh... prong shop owner oh god seriously so many

bad jokes in this movie so many bad jokes overall

i do like the voice cast in the film I don't

think the voice cast makes up for the shitty

plot lines. I will agree the plot line isn't

that very good. The animation is very well. And

even how they kind of superimpose people's faces

on their said creature. Yes. Because they all

do kind of look like their characters. Kind of,

yeah. In more ways than one, but... And the voice

cast was good. But yeah, like I like you said

I I would much rather watch a Pixar film yeah

over the DreamWorks stuff just because It's I

mean it depends I do like some of the DreamWorks

stuff But yes, they have done a couple, you know,

I I do like the Shrek franchise This isn't one

of their worst ones. I would honestly rather

watch this over Shrek Because it started getting

kind of diluted towards the end like the first

one was good. Then it kind of started tapering

off Just to set the plot in the stage here for

what the actual story is Basically what happens

is Oscar who is the the young fish played by

Will Smith goes to the Let's see. After explaining

this to his best friend, Angie, who is an angelfish

played by René Zango, she offers him a chance

to pay back the money by potting a pink pearl

that was a gift from her grandmother. Oscar brings

the money to the racetrack to meet Sykes, but

becomes distracted by his wishes of grandeur.

and upon hearing that the race is rigged, places

it all on a long shot bet by the name of Lucky

Day. Such a million dollar bet is noticed nearby

a beautiful lion fish named Lola, played by Angelina

Jolie, who flagrantly seduces an excited Oscar,

but Oscar is very disappointed when she leaves

once Sykes tells her he is a whale washer. Sykes

is furious that Oscar bet the money, but nonetheless

agrees to see how the race turns out. And of

course moments before their horse Lucky Day crosses

the finish line he trips and falls on line. The

race is lost and Oscar is set to be punished

in a secluded area for his impulsiveness. That's

essentially the overall plot of the film for

the ending. The ending is basically Oscar for

six all the wealth he has acquired makes peace

with the sharks becomes manager of the whale

wash now frequented by sharks and starts dating

Angie and starts to have a happy, honest life.

In the post -credits scene, Lola comes to see

Oscar at the top of the reef, wanting to make

amends with him for what she did, but all she

finds is a hermit named Crazy Joe waiting for

her. This is not a movie I will probably ever

watch again. Much like Chicken Run, when we reviewed

that a couple weeks ago, I so will never watch

this one again either. This is just... It's just

complete utter torture. Well, there there's I

figured it out. There's only four franchises

that DreamWorks does animation for mm -hmm that

I will watch Okay um two of them are not technically

franchises. They're just individual films, but

Madagascar Kung Fu Panda those are the franchises

over the hedge and b -movie that I liked Other

than that I'm Like I mean this movie wasn't bad.

I would I would watch this movie again. Just

not until I have kids That are old enough to

watch it Because I don't care to sit there and

watch it again Yeah It wasn't bad though, it's

it's I mean, yeah I have yet to see Mega Mind.

I heard that was good. I have it. I haven't watched

it. I should. Yes, you should. But yeah, just

looking at DreamWorks' list of releases, I do

like the Shrek films for the overall story that

they tell, but I do agree that it kind of got

wonky there in the middle. Oh my god. DreamWorks

is supposedly gonna be making December of next

year. Mr. Peabody and Sherman. Oh god. I'll get

behind that. I hope they don't screw it up. That's

all I can say. I will agree with you on that.

I mean, I love Mr. Peabody and Sherman. I love

that old cartoon and I think an updated version

could work, but I just hope they don't screw

it up. They also have in the works, How to Train

Your Dragon 2 and 3, Kung Fu Panda 3, A Penguins

of Madagascar 2015 film. It was going to be a

direct video. Penguins had been in the works

since 2005 when the first Madagascar film had

been released. Overall, Shark Tale is not something

I can recommend at all. Getting into a bit of

trivia. The original title was Shark Slayer,

but was changed to Shark Tale about a year before

the release because Jeffrey Katzenberg thought

the title might scare families away. Well, of

course, it's gonna still scare families away.

When Oscar goes to the time clock, there's a

Saturday, don't bother. A reference to a famous

memo Jeffrey Katzenberg sent to execs while he

was with Disney. Yeah... So getting into the

the overall box office here. Sharktel opened

at number one with 47 .6 million as I said before.

Overall it grows just north of 160 million. What

would you rank this one to four? I'll give it

a two. It's not I will too. It's not it's not

utterly terrible. I have seen worse out of DreamWorks,

but It's not what I'd care to own But it's not

bad. It's Yeah Um, I'll also give it to it. It

is worth a watch if you can find it free on TV

or free somewhere else That's that's fine. But

it's it's not something I will ever pay money

for ever again So for some critical reception

It is received mixed and negative reviews is

a rating of 36 % of the review aggritate website

rotten tomatoes and a 48 rating on Metacritic

John Mancini founder of the Italian. Oh Holy

hell That was hell freezing over because this

movie was that bad I'm just waiting for it to

subside because Jesus Christ. That's the loudest

fun That's the longest loudest drawn -up thunderclap

I have ever heard so you call the thundercats,

right? Stop being a hoe Thunder thunder thundercats

Roger Ebert gave shark tail two out of four stars

doesn't you know it doesn't surprise me He gives

everything two out of four stars Roger Ebert

should take his thumb and shove it up his ass

This movie did win for the Casting Society of

America Best Animated Voice -Over Feature Casting.

I can see that though. I can see it winning for

the voice cast because of who the voice actors

are in it. And of course Will Smith won for Favorite

Voice from an Animated Movie. And it was nominated

for a bunch of other stuff. So yeah, we are going

to take a commercial break. And then we'll come
