About this Episode

TFG1Mike flies solo to discuss Marvel's Iron Man 3 Prelude comic series, a two-issue tie-in bridging The Avengers and Iron Man 3. Written by Christos Gage with art by Steve Kurth, the books follow War Machine/James Rhodey as he investigates how hostile nations are acquiring Stark technology, leading to the reveal of the Mandarin as the film's villain. Mike praises the writing, art, and character work—particularly Gage's handling of Rhodey's voice and attitude—and breaks down both issues' plots, covers, and their connections to the MCU.

Welcome to The Pull Bag. Join us as we dig out

our latest comics and discuss them with the rotating

panel of the GCRN crew. So sit back and enjoy

this week's Pull Bag. Number one. Heroes. There

is no such thing. Hello, ladies and gentlemen,

and welcome to episode one of The Pull Bag. I

am TF2 and Mike, your host for this episode.

Yes, I'm running this one solo. I guess you could

call me Rodimus Solo. The reason why I'm doing

a solo show is because, to my knowledge, out

of all the friends that I have online, all the

friends that I usually podcast with, I believe

I am the only one to read the Iron Man 3 prelude

number one and number two, part of the Marvel

Cinematic Universe, a official tie -in comic

book, two -issue comic book series leading up

into Iron Man 3. The books, number one starts

after the events of Iron Man 2, and both books

take place during and after the events of The

Avengers. Both books written by Christos Gage.

with will cronopilgrim pencils by steve kerth

inks by drew jerasi or garasi i'm not sure if

i'm spelling pronouncing that correct very very

very awesome stuff in this book i love the inflections

that that gauges is using in the writing especially

with the relationship between roadie and tony

because uh... uh... you know he even says uh...

yeah my name's war machine you're actually gonna

call you that i was using that as an insult so

they're directly calling back to the battle that

they had an Iron Man 2 in Tony's house at his

birthday party. The great thing about this writing

in these books in this number one is I can actually

hear Don Shields voice in my head when reading

the stuff that War Machine says in this book.

The basic plot and outline of these two tie -ins,

these number one and number two tie -ins, is

basically to shine a light on Rhodey, to shine

a light on James Rhodes, to show him off in the

War Machine armor. And it tells a story of him

going to these different countries over a period

of time and finding all this Stark tech and wondering

how all these terrorists have gotten this. And

it's very, very, very awesome. I can't wait to

see Iron Man 3 this May. These books have really,

really got me going and it's very, very, very

cool. You know, we even see a page of Tony Collingrody

saying, hey, can you come to New York? How fast

could you get here? And we find out that roadie

might have been able to be in the battle of New

York, but he wasn't obviously The number one

ends with With roadie pretty much being crushed.

He's pretty much not he's crushed and he's unconscious

in the suit and Very very very cool, and I misspoke

earlier when I said these came out in December

and January I don't know if I said it in this

taker it might have been the first take I did

they came out in january and february so very

very very cool and it says at the end it says

to be concluded in prelude number two for number

one the cover of number one as you'll see in

the post is tony stark standing in his his armory

with all his different armors around him very

very very awesome as far as issue number two

the cover shows tony in the okay i know iron

man fans are going to be screaming at their ipods

or itunes or ipads or whatever it's gold and

red armor but it's it's a different armor. I

don't know which armor it is. There's so many

Mark armors in Iron Man that I have no clue.

So, sorry about that. Again, number two is also

written by Christos Gage with Will Corona Pilgrim,

pencils by Steve Kurth, inks by Drew Jurasi,

or Jurasi, however you say his name. And this

pretty much picks up where we left off in the

first book. and roadie has to pretty much escape

and he does come to find out the town that he's

in has nuclear ordnance so he can't fire on the

certain tank that has the nuclear ordnance so

you get to find a way around it these books are

absolutely amazing cannot wait for iron man 3

i can't say that is enough times ladies and gentlemen

the art in these is so great the iron the war

machine suit looks so fantastic There's a panel

in here where Rhodey is flying away from a construction

site and the war machine armor has never looked

so good. It's just so, so awesome. The greatest

thing about Prelude number two is the end of

the book because it pretty much has Rhodey coming

in to all of the Avengers after the Battle of

New York, them partying at some diner. i thought

that was really really cool now the whole thing

here in these two prelude books is they're trying

to find out what you know how hostile countries

getting all this start tech and it turns out

to pretty much be the mandarin uh... not necessarily

a spoiler but uh... it's very very very cool

and of course we will see what happens The end

of the book it says, uh, Iron Man's not enough,

not even with a war machine watching his back,

for what's coming, we're gonna need an Iron Legion.

And there's a whole bunch of the armors. It just

says, you know, to be continued in Iron Man 3,

only in theaters. And the end of the book shows

the ten rings, so you kinda do already know that

it's going to be the Mandarin. Of course, we

already knew that it would be the Mandarin. Obviously

for anyone who has read stuff online than the

internet The Mandarin is the villain in the third

film as I said before the the art in the prelude

books is absolutely amazing The writing is great.

I love how Gage Wrote roadie as far as his attitude.

It's very very very cool You would you don't

necessarily need to read these preludes to get

Iron Man 3 But I think it would be a nice thing

for a lot of Iron Man film fans if you did read

them they are great books great art great writing

absolutely love them can't say enough about them

it's so good I'm hoping to read more of the Marvel

Cinematic Universe in the future I don't know

if I'll read the Thor tie -ins but I will probably

be reading the Captain America tie -ins and If

they do an Avengers 2 tie -in, I'm not sure what

they're gonna do there, but absolutely love them.

Cannot wait. Go check them out. Go to your local
