Talking in Circles
List of Shame: Geek Culture Classics We Haven’t Watched

About this Episode
Hey, this is Steve Bloom, and you are listening
to the Geekcast Radio Network. You are now on
the inside of what I like to call the circle
of trust. We are all connected in a great circle
of life. You know something, Bert? I think you
and I are going in circles. It feels like we're
going in circles. The circuit is now complete.
When I left you, I was but the learner. Now I
am the master. Because it's a circle. Yeah, we
heard about the circle. Yeah, that's what the
million would say. Hi, this is Chuck. This is
Greg. And this is Dan and we are talking in circles
brought to you by the Geekcast Radio Network.
The podcast that is gonna get shameful this time
around. I say that because we're gonna be going
off our list of shame. Those infamous movies,
TV shows, comic books that people just are all
about. Notice being some of the best of all time
in the world of geekdom But we ourselves have
not gotten a chance to get around and actually
watching or reading them So we're gonna reveal
that list of shame and I know a lot of people
keep a list of shame of like movies and TV shows
So we're gonna go all over that But then in order
to kind of put a little extra twist and in our
next special homework episode You're gonna be
able to try to tell us which one we should mark
off our list of shame and we'll get into more
of that In the second segment, but before we
get to all that stuff, how's the week been going
for you guys? Guys, I have a sex spot. Again,
so let me let me get to that and I'll read it
for you guys This one actually has a normal name.

real name is Amanda and just to set this up for
those that don't know way A few months ago, Greg
had a nice little run in with the infamous sex
bot that basically was trying to convince him
to go on some sort of webcam, which led to some
humorous encounters. I'm curious to see how this
one turned out. Yeah, this one starts off kind
of slow, but it does all of a sudden suddenly
pick up. Just a little burn. I'm looking forward
to it. Amanda. Hello. Hi. Who is this? Hey, my
real name is Amanda First thing that you say
like never weird to start a conversation off

how's your week been going Chuck? Pretty good.
I I am back. I am indeed back. Yeah, welcome
back. We were Greg and I were like, like we said,
we need that balance of the force that Chuck
provides. So it's good to have you. You guys
did great without me. I listened to it. But we
need you here to censor us a little bit. Want
me to make beeping noises? That could probably
help. I wasn't going to say the F -bomb there.
Listen, who's the sensor here? What the fuck,
Chuck? Beep. Damn it, I was late on that one.
You missed it. You missed it. He sensed it happening.
So, yeah. I had quite a busy week. Unfortunately,
I had to visit a friend in a hospital last week.
That's why I wasn't able to make it, but they
are doing well. And then this week, I was out
of town for like two days because I had to go
to a conference for work. Um, I didn't get a
whole lot done here, but it was interesting.
The conference I went to was literally in the
middle of nowhere. It was in a celestial head.
Yeah, it was a giant celestial head. I flew out
to outer space and back in two days. Did you,
did you listen to the Guardians of the Galaxy
soundtrack all the way there? Cause that'd be
awesome. Yeah. Uga Chaka for like 4 ,800 hours
straight. Yeah. After the like the 80th. You
know, 800th time you're like, you know what?
It gets old, you know? But yeah, the conference
was in Clearfield, Pennsylvania, which is about
two hours east of Pittsburgh. And it's, you know,
it's kind of in the center of the state, like
near state college, but not like too near it.
So like there's literally nothing to do there.
And, uh, were you close to the falling waters?
I don't think so. Oh, cause that place is awesome.
I'm guessing like I was probably still a good
hour and a half or two hours away from that,
but we were about, about, uh, you know, maybe
30 or 40 minutes outside of state college, but
so it was Penn state country and everything,
but there's like, yeah. So that like, there was
another office of like, for my company and we
had to go there and we had, we had the conference
and we stayed overnight and, uh, There was like
pretty much like one restaurant in this town
that like everyone went to. Nice. There's a couple
other ones, but they're like they were like chain
things right off the interstate. But this was
like the only like good restaurant that everyone
knew. Nice. And it's actually been featured on
TV and several TV shows. And it's just weird
because it's in the middle of nowhere, but it's
called Denny's Beer Barrel Pub. I've heard of
that place. Have you? Yeah, I knew you wouldn't
let me down. I don't remember what show was on
or what they had, but that name sounds hella
familiar. Well, apparently they are the home
to the world's largest cheeseburger challenge.
That's right! Was it Man Vs Food? No, well, they've
been on, um, they said they've been on Travel
Channel, Food Network. I think the Rachel Ray
show and another one. I want to say Ellen, maybe
or something. Operation 911 when they had to
call someone for having a heart attack. Well,
we hear this. They have several food challenges,
several hamburger challenges, and it starts at
a two pound burger. OK, and you start at a two
pound. All right. Yeah. And Chuck Chuck did all
of them, which does seem nice, which doesn't
sound like a lot, but two pounds is, you know,
it's about four times the size of your average.
uh, burger going out, but, um, that's a lot of
quarter pounders. Yeah. But yeah, basically eight
quarter pounders, but, um, they, so they have
that one and then it progressively went up. They
have two, three, six, 15 pound Jesus. 25 pound
hamburger. Wow. I believe a 75 pound. And then
the world's largest hamburger challenge one hundred
and twenty five pounds. Jesus christ you have
you have to give them seventy two hours notice
so they can make it. And build a coffin so when
i called three days earlier i told them. Wow
is that like a multiple like how could you. Yeah,
they do allow you to use multiple people. I know
the 15 pound one, they said you could even use
two people. I didn't think to look how many people
they allowed for the 125 pound one, but I'm guessing
like 30 people. 50 people maybe, I don't know.
Which challenge did you accept, Chuck? I didn't
either. I ended up getting a burger that was
called the Paterno. Okay, obviously we're in
Penn State country there and it was actually
pretty good. I enjoyed it. It was there was like
bacon on it some fried onions there were It was
there was a barbecue sauce Some type of honey
mustard almost or something and then they had
like a capicola on there for some reason Okay,
like the lunch me Which I ended up taking off
because I didn't really like but the rest of
the burger was really good And it was the burger
was so big That like they actually had to put
it on like half of a hoagie roll wow just to
like cover it and this wasn't even one of the
ones that is a challenge. But anyway that that
hundred and twenty five pound burger challenge
the cost of that is three hundred and eighty
dollars. If you eat it all do you get it for
free or I'm not sure if it's for free because.
Think it might be like half off or something
because I know the two pound when I was looking
at it was 20 bucks and if you if you finish that
it's 50 % off so it'd be 10 bucks for it, but
But you get the t -shirt. So that's like Yeah,
they they had actually some pictures up on the
wall of People holding these burgers before they
started eating them like and these things are
just massive. They're so huge and It was just
cool to like look at all them and like all the
different sized ones and everything. It was just
ridiculous I guess like the the bigger ones they
you know, they hire out this baker in the town
to like make the bun for the thing That's why
they need like three days to build it and it's
like it's unbelievable man That's crazy any famous
people that uh that have attempted or not Not
that I saw I didn't I didn't really spend a lot
of time looking at it, but It was a great little
place though. We had a great time there was pretty
cool So if you ever pass them through, you know
the middle of nowhere definitely stop there And
Pennsylvania has a lot of middle of nowhere.
So we do My week has been quite busy as well.
I I know you missed last week check, but we also
talked about a little burger Talk as well as
a new burger place open up their ass, but uh
had a lot going on We actually had some people
down in our area helping us out because we did
some painting over the weekend. We painted our
nursery. We were going to do this elaborate diamond
design and then we started trying to tape it
and measure it and that didn't go very well.
It went from like 90 minutes of arguing to trigger
it, how to do it to like 30 minutes of taping
to 90 minutes of going back and like redoing
it. So we ended up going with a simpler, just
striped design, but it looks pretty good. So
glad it got that out of the way. The next step
is getting all the furniture put together, which
is going to be so exciting. Oh yeah. I don't
know why you didn't call down your brother -in
-law who actually paints. Wrong type of painting,
but. Yeah. Put a giant mural on the wall. I think
he would have done a good job. Probably, but
he's a little busy in college right now, so.
I couldn't really bug him. We thought about it
though, but we'll wait for him to do more of
the detail design after it. Yeah, he could draw
like little comic strips in each one of the stripes
there. Exactly, exactly. But this is kind of
in a whirlwind of media news coming out this
week. Some really good, some kind of the sadder
news, and I'll get to the more bittersweet news
in our last segment, but the amazing news. Yeah,
get it amazing news that came out recently was
the I guess not killer news expect sensational
news the more levels news the Marvel Cinematic
Universe The Marvel Cinematic Universe got a
little I guess more superior because Spider -man
is now going to be part of the more MCU, you
know as people who are listening this probably
Well aware of the fact that marvel and sony came
to some agreement. I don't know what it was.
I don't know if marvel secretly hacked sony's
accounts and made them say yes without them realizing
or what happened, but Just took them to this
link to this website and then sony just had to
fill in their credit card Just click here It's
only for validation or purpose. It's just for
age. We don't have to transfer money or anything.
What should we make your character wear? A blue
suit? We have all the different uniforms. How
about an amazing bag man? But yes. So I was curious
to hear your guys' reactions to the news that
Spider -Man will be joining the Marvel Cinematic
Universe. So what do you guys think about that?
Best news ever. That sounded like the comic book
guy from the Simpsons, but No, I'm like super
excited for it. Like I know it kind of sucks
that you know, you're changing actors again and
You kind of have to get acclimated to a new guy
playing spider -man But I think it's just for
the geek factor of having him interacting with
all the Avengers and everything I think it's
gonna be awesome. It's just gonna Especially
like with how huge of a role he played in like
Civil War Another anticipating him starting off
in that movie and stuff. Yeah I'm just like super
stoked. What do you think? What are the chances
that we actually see the iron spider uniform
in the silver war? Oh, that would be awesome.
Imagine if Amanda had the Iron Spider uniform,
it would be, put your credit card information
immediately. I have my Iron Spider -Man thong,
huh? E -string. I think the suit is so advanced
it has a credit card slot on it. Nice, nice.
All right, Greg, what did you think? I'm okay
with it. It was just kind of weird and kind of
out of nowhere, but I think it's a good thing.
I do find it weird that we're going through so
many actors playing Spider -Man. It's starting
to be the same kind of thing as the Incredible
Hulk situation. He's the new Batman. Yeah, definitely.
I definitely want to see what Marvel is going
to do with the character. hopefully they I'm
pretty sure they know how to do him right Since
it's their character to begin with and they they
know the history so well, so Hopefully that's
gonna be a great thing Yeah, I mean, I definitely
you know, I think it's all really overly all
good news I think Sony just didn't know what
to do anymore. They're like, yeah, so We're kind
of ran out of ideas. They had all this elaborate
plans But they try to think catch up to the Avengers
and one movie and it didn't work out very well
So super excited about that. I think it's gonna
be good I know there's gonna be a new actor,
but I was wondering like do you really I mean
I know it's pretty apparent at this point that
in regard for listen coming back But I wouldn't
be all that against the fact that he did I mean
you could just be like, you know all that stuff
that happened. That was just a weird dream We
had I know they talked about a few people taking
the spot over and one was like Logan Lerman who
I wouldn't be against I'm not sure they're like
he's a decent actor. But what was he in Dan?
He was in fury He was didn't see that dan he
was another movie you're probably gonna see these
but he was in noah. He was in and he was in parks
not part recreation but i was in that person
being a wallflower he was not as well didn't
see any of those yeah he is kind of like. I could
see him fitting the role i can see in the role
for sure he's a little bit. I think you make
a decent peter parker i'm just worried if you
make it. Spider -man keys never came off as like
the quirky, you know Sarcastic that Andrew Garfield
had which I hope they don't get they don't forget
about that if he comes back to the MCU I liked
Andrew Garfield's snarkiness. Yeah, I mean there's
Been into this for a long time. I know when the
Avengers was being made that they were trying
to get the Oscorp building to show in the background
and There's a lot of rumor regarding the emails
that came out from Sony. So I guess it finally
and it was interesting though. It's like Marvel's
not paying anything for spider -man It's kind
of crazy the deal if you look into it, so it's
no wind. It's a no -lose situation for them It
really is and I think I think they still get
final I think they get creative control for the
most part and then I think I think Sony gets
pretty much final creative control, but what
they're paying for him to be in Marvel's movie.
Yeah. But the only thing they get back out of
it is they're supposedly going to be allowed
to use a couple of the MCU characters in their
next Spider -Man movie. Yeah, which could be
interesting to see how that goes. But I mean,
there's some negatives to it, like we said, like
rebooting it again. I think Sony even realized
that they kind of They kind of screwed the pooch
over and they really had no chance. So did you
guys hear that? I thought I read this, but isn't
he supposed to be back in high school? Yeah,
I think they want to go for him back in high
school as a younger, younger Spider -Man. Which
is, I think, why they're going Lerner and Lerman,
because he's like 23 -ish, but he could probably
pass for someone in high school. So, but I guess
so could Andrew Garfield, and he's like 30. So
I guess, I don't know. You put your hair high
enough, you can. Pass as a teenager, maybe. I
don't know. Oh, great. I pass as a teenager then,
guys. Good news. You shaved the beard and you
might be good. Never. But yeah, so that's kind
of cool. Can't wait to see what that... We'll
probably talk more about it when, you know, we
get the casting and all that good stuff. So looking
forward to it. But one thing also that I've been
looking forward to quite a while and finally
came out early last week and had a little bit
of a double dip was the, I guess, spin -off show
of Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul. And I know
you guys haven't watched Breaking Bad at all,
correct? You see that's that's part of my shame
for the next segment. What's the shame. I haven't
watched any of it either. Yeah, it will better
call Saul. For those that don't know, Saul is
a character in the Breaking Bad universe. He
was kind of a lawyer. You know, if you watch
TV, those 1 -800 lawyers that were like, call
me if you have a lawsuit or whatever, they're
kind of swarmy and tend to like get the worst.
Swarma? Swarma. Yeah, they get a lot of swarma
cases, but no. I'm trying to think of what you
can call them. They're ambulance chasers. Yeah,
basically. Yeah, they're basically ambulance
chasers. And that was kind of who Saul was. He
dealt with a lot of shady people. He was Walter
White's lawyer. So now we have this show, Better
Call Saul. And it takes place as of right now.
Before the events of breaking bad and it's kind
of interesting. I've actually I really like it
a lot It's it's just kind of fun being back in
the world of breaking bad And I would say like
you don't have to watch breaking bad to watch
better call Saul though I think you would appreciate
it more because there are certain cameos of In
familiar faces that have showed up that kind
of make you wonder where they're going with it
in a little bit I'm kind of I felt like they
relied on some of those famous faces a little
bit too much and maybe put a little bit too many
like characters in to the first two episodes
but overall like I just love how this show looks
it's so cinematic and There's all these little
great segments of this like a lot of no dialogue.
Just really well shot put together montages of
different things happening in the beginning you
kind of see where Saul is and it seems like it's
that part is taking place when he's older. And
then there's also this really great little montage
of him, uh, going through all these different
core cases because he's this, uh, oh, a public
defendant. So you get some of the really crappy
cases. This first case is. Rather hilarious.
Well, not I should say Larry's kind of twisted
the people that we see him have to defend it
He's kind of down on his luck. His office is
in like the back room of a nail shack It's you
know, you there's like a dryer and going on so
he's kind of he's very little money So it's him
before he's really kind of become the infamous
better call Saul from Breaking Bad. So The second
episode, there's actually two episodes. The first
episode was debuted after Walking Dead and the
second episode debuted on Monday nights. And
the second, the first one was good, but the second
one was even more fantastic. A lot of, a lot
of tension kind of got in a situation where,
as you would expect for a series that is based
upon Breaking Bad, where Saul gets, not Saul,
but that's, that actually is his real name, but.
where he gets placed in a situation well over
his head, but Bob Odenkirk is the guy who's the
star of the show, for those that don't know,
and he's awesome. He's really funny. He's been
a comedian forever, but he's also a really strong
actor, too. So I think this might do for him
what Breaking Bad did for Bryan Cranston. It's
a different type of performance completely, but
it's a lot of fun. It's a lot different of a
show than Breaking Bad, but... It, there's some
similarities to it as well. Like this guy who
is kind of trying to just get by, but because
of his failures in life, it's kind of stuck maybe
going the more morally corrupt route. So looking
forward to it. I can't wait for more episodes.
I think it's actually available on Netflix because
I think they become available on Netflix the
day after that they come up, which is kind of
cool. I was going to say if it does the same
for his career that it did for Cranston. Do you
see him appearing in the next Godzilla movie?
Yes, and getting killed 10 minutes in. It's Godzilla's
lawyer. Exactly. For all the property damage.
He's going to represent Godzilla and Superman
from Man of Steel. Yeah. And Batman v Superman.
It's a court case, but people don't realize.
Honestly, I think Godzilla was more careful with
what he destroyed than Superman was. Which is
pretty sad. It kind of was. You know, he tried
to like, you know, go under the ships and he
was more protective. He went between the buildings
and through them. Yeah. Yeah, that's really true.
He can learn. Superman can learn some lessons
from Godzilla. That's very true. Very true. That's
cool. Very nice. Yeah. And Greg, I know that
last week you kind of hinted that you're reading
a book and it seems like you finally finished
it. So I was curious, you know, what it was and
how you enjoyed it. I did finally finish it.
It's a book called The Unincorporated War. It's
the second in a series. I read the first one
like years back and I've had this one sitting
around for a while because I actually got it
from when Books -a -Million in our area used
to be Borders and I got it when Borders was closing
down and I got it super cheap. The first story
was good. But I wasn't totally interested in
the series, but I figured it was cheap enough
and was good enough for that price, so I picked
it up. It's dealing with a lot of issues, a lot
of issues, and a lot of heavy issues. Economics,
religion, different social issues, politics.
So you've got a lot of that mixed in there. which
I'm not really a big fan of those heavy issues.
I rather something a little bit more fun. But
the writers of this book, which I don't remember
offhand now, you probably look it up online,
the writers do a great job. They really kept
me interested the whole time. And the big main
thing that got me into this is that this guy
is a kind of man out of time. And it kind of
has the same kind of scenario as one of the episodes
of Futurama where this 80s businessman gets frozen
and then brought back dethod later in the future.
And so he's he's got a lot of money. going on
and everything. But he eventually, everybody
else has become owned by corporations. And the
first book kind of deals with him in a world
where everybody's owned by a corporation, but
he has, he's not owned by any corporation. So
he's the unincorporated man, which is the title
of the first book. In this book, war kind of
breaks out over that issue. I don't want to go
too far into it. because well a lot of people
didn't read the first book I didn't explain the
first book and it would ruin a lot of stuff in
the first book if you want to read it. So like
is the character actually from like does he is
he like an actual time traveler or is it just
that he's. He was just frozen. Walt Disney style
and America he's like. Yeah he had some kind
of a disease that they couldn't treat in the
eighties so he had a lot of money to get himself
frozen and waited out until they come up with
a cure. The same universe is demolition man.
I don't think so they didn't mention anybody
wearing weird robes or anything. No, three seashells.
Everything sounds painful. No. Well, corporations
own a lot of stuff, but it isn't just Taco Bell.
It's kind of like an epic. If I can use that
term. No, you can't actually go back and try
it again. Um, it's the science fiction with a
lot of stuff going on, but yeah, it, it deals
with a lot of stuff going on. So that's that.
Then some other stuff I read. I've read graphic
novel. Novel number eleven for fables nice still
great still awesome story line. The author of
that like i don't know where the hell he comes
up with the stuff but it's always interesting
stories going on the artwork is always so so
but really i work. Really i like the covers more
by james john but the artwork is just ok for
me it doesn't. Do anything for me doesn't take
away doesn't add anything to it really i'm more
into that for the story. And then there's saga
which i'm sorry she's talking fables i'm thinking
saga i haven't read i don't know i love i love
fionna staples artwork yeah which is why i was
confused i'm like fionna staples yeah okay sorry
i haven't read i've never read fables so the
fables is really has a good storyline it deals
with. Fable stories the characters and i can
kick out of their universe and so on and so forth
and i highly recommend that everybody and then
i read the latest saga graphic novel. I don't
think it was as great as the first three still
really good you still got the great artwork of
fiona staples it does set up for some interesting
stuff for the continuance of of the story. that
the pairings off it deals a lot with the prince
robot actually. And I think prince robot and
the missus in the story have a lot a lot of stuff
going on which is interesting and so. They kind
of leave you off in an interesting spot, I think.
So I'm very much looking forward to the next
part, but the artwork, it just blows you away.
Even if the story does fall just a little bit,
but Brian K. Vaughan, it's still a great story
going on. And I think issue, the latest issue
just came out like two weeks ago. So not the
next volume, just the latest issue. So I might
have to pick that up. Hell yeah. All right. Anything
else? Oh, uh. totally missed out on and I wish
I could have went to it in New York. They had
a thing for the Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition
where Emily Ratajkowski was there and all the
other models in it. And I wish I could have went
to profess my dying love for my undying love
for Emily Ratajkowski. There's another one this
weekend on Valentine's Day in New York. I can't
make it up for that either because I have work.
And that restraining order gets you every time.
No restraining order yet, even though I favorite
everything she does on Twitter. Alrighty, yeah,
it might be in the mail, you never know. Alright
Chuck, I know you've been quite, quite busy,
but I think you mentioned you've been able to
watch a few things in your time away from the
podcast. I have. I ended up doing Redbox for
the first time in my life, believe it or not.
Wow, how'd that go? It was interesting. I couldn't
get my debit card to swipe the thing. I was staying
there for about half an hour. They just need
that for age, Chuck. You don't actually have
to pay anything. They just need that for age
verification. Yeah, it was weird. Usually I buy
DVDs because I'm pretty good at knowing what
movies I like and everything. I have Netflix
too. You know, my girlfriend and I felt like
kind of watching a movie. There was nothing really
good out in the theaters that we hadn't already
seen. So we're like, well, let's go to Redbox
and see what they got. So we picked out a couple
of movies. And one of them that I got was actually
something she wanted to see. But it was the Purge
Anarchy. And I did not see the first Purge. You
didn't. I was aware of. the story basically and
kind of what it was about. But and honestly,
I didn't even know if this one was the second
one, because I'm like, I don't know what the
titles are or anything. I figured usually when
they put the little second title thing, usually
that's the second one. But yeah, we checked that
out. I thought it was pretty cool. Nothing really
like that great. Like I'm not a huge like horror
thriller movie type of guy anyway. And it's.
Don't know if you'd call it horror like it's
classified under horror in the red box thing,
but I guess it kind of is but uh the cool thing
I thought was uh that Frank Grillo was in it
who played a crossbones and playing America.
Oh, yeah Grillo oh Yeah, I had someone say like
After seeing him that like you get you get it's
almost like if you imagine it him playing the
Punisher that movie just yeah a little bit better
Yeah I definitely started getting that vibe because
well from I guess I'll backtrack a little bit
But from what I understand like the first purge
movie all sort of took place Indoors. Yeah, the
first person which really like that entire concept
for those that don't know is the idea that for
one day all Crime is legal or maybe not even
a day. It's almost just like one night. You can
do anything It's like 12 hours or some 12 hours
including murder the only thing you can't do
is I kill like certain members of the the government
or something. And the first film, they just -
That's who I would want to go after if I was
allowed. And I say, he's listening. Oh, shit.
The first purge, the entire concept was used
just to use like a home invasion story where
there was a family second home and like someone
was trying to get in and whatnot. But the second
purge was like the movie people actually - Wanted
to see the first one. So it actually used the
premise more so as a actually see the chaos that
was occurring in the middle of the city. Yeah,
and I thought it was pretty cool. Like in this,
the stories are totally unrelated between the
first and second movie. So you really don't need
to see the first one at all. This is totally
different, totally different characters and everything.
But this one takes place primarily outside on
the actual streets of the city. I'm not sure
what city it is. I don't know if they even really
say do they do I thought this had Los Angeles,
but it could be incorrect Okay, basically kind
of like it might have just been a current city
current, Chicago or Detroit with all the crime
that was happening They're just like let's just
film this like normal day. So yeah they yeah,
they put a like You know, they put a thing on
the bottom of the screen that says like, you
know, the year is actually like 2023 I think
yeah and What sort of just to kind of set it
up like there's a you know, it's the day of the
purge like the purge is gonna be having that
night and You know, there's this couple that's
Sort of fighting and everything in there. They
want to like get a divorce and stuff and their
car like breaks down Just outside the city and
it's like they're like hour or two away from
like the purge beginning and like no one is out
on the roads because everybody's home like locked
up in their houses and stuff to be safe and So
it's just like this feeling of like extreme Like
loneliness like there's no one there to like
help them out of the situation and they kind
of run downtown And which is like the worst place
to go and let's go into the city more so like
why wait till the last night like i would be
like three days before the purge like where i
need to be yeah like let's go get some groceries
you know two hours before the purge will be alright.
But i'm. You know there's like another side story
going on with another like a lady and her daughter
and stuff and and then the frank. Grillo's character
sort of comes into play and they sort of all
team up. So you have these five people and the
series of events or adventures or whatever they
go on, like they have a goal trying to get to
this place and, you know, something doesn't quite
work out. So then they're making it to this other
place. And so you kind of follow this group of
five people around. And it was really interesting.
Like it kept my attention definitely through
the whole thing. And I'm not into these movies
at all, like usually so. I was more impressed
with it than i thought i would be i guess which
was the best way to go in this is kinda like
really low expectations i was kinda like it wasn't
too bad i didn't hit myself afterwards so there's
that yeah. I don't know what would you say dan
that it's. Like, obviously you're hinting at
it, it's probably a lot better than the first
one. Oh yeah, definitely a lot better than the
first one. I don't think he was ever hinting
at it, Chuck. I think he was full out going,
yeah that one sucks. He was screaming it. Yeah,
the first one, it's just, there's some decent
parts, like the best part of that movie is there's
the guy who plays like the major villain is pretty
good, but besides that it's just kind of a dull
film. You're better watching your next for a
good home invasion movie, but... The approach
to is not perfect, but I thought it kind of there's
a lot of issues with it, but I thought it felt
like an old school John Carpenter movie. So that's
what I kind of liked about it. But I think, you
know, getting in the red box is the perfect way
to watch that movie or watching it on Netflix.
Yeah. And like not to give too much away here,
I'll just keep it very vague. But I was sort
of disappointed in the main character at the
end. Like, and I guess. I guess it's not really
their angle to create a hero in the film but
it's sort of like the movie sort of leads you
on this path that this guy's like sort of a hero
not a hero but like you're sort of like looking
up to him to have the answers and to get people
out of these situations so you're kind of looking
up to this guy through the whole movie and at
the end you find out like there's such a simple
motivation behind his Like behind his actions
and stuff and it's just a little bit of a letdown
for me, but I kind of understand why they had
to do it like I don't know if you felt that way
at all Dan, but I don't know I guess like the
idea is that he would need some sort of motivation
to go out and want to purge that night and I
felt it was it kind of cliche but I thought that
I just thought there would be more to him like
I thought there would be a Little bit higher
nobility to him. I guess but it turned out. I
guess that's kind of if he was the higher nobility
wouldn't be doing it in that way. Right, right.
So but I see like I the first thing I thought
of is like, OK, this guy is out because, you
know, he is like a Punisher character. I did
get that vibe at first. Like, OK, he wants to
like he wants to clean up the sea. I guess these
psychos and stuff like that. But I guess I kind
of maybe that was my own shortcoming. Like I,
you know, my own misconception going into the.
The film that and I first saw this guy I see
I guess I took something else because there's
like when it first starts there are like scenes
between him and I guess it's his wife or girlfriend
that I thought kind of hinted at the fact that
He was doing something for more of a selfish
means So that's kind of the way I took it. That's
that was my assumption from the beginning Okay,
see I totally didn't see the beginning that beginning
part Well, there you go. I don't remember that
at all. Yeah. Yeah, it was like I don't know
I don't know if I was out of the room or what
happened, but like to me, the the movie started
with the the mother and the daughter. Oh, yeah,
yeah. And their and their father. So I didn't
get I didn't see that opening sequence. There's
a sequence with that guy. Or maybe it's just
in the trailer. But I think it's in the movie
where you see him in it. But I could see if you
don't see that part of it, why it almost seems
like he's more of a vigilante than he really
is. Oh, OK. Well, yeah, that would be. That would
be a key aspect. Very nice. Who knows? I probably
was out of the room and doing something and came
back in. I don't know. Very cool. You watch anything
else? I did. Well, I did get to the next morning.
I watched the other movies so that I could take
them both back in time. But I watched Homefront
with Jason Statham. And I'm a pretty big Jason
Statham fan. I think you guys are as well. Yes.
Yeah. He is awesome. There's not really there's
really not many movies. I don't like that. He
was in I think crank crank was a little weird
Yeah, that was probably That was probably The
only one that I'm not like super excited about,
but there is a crank to Chuck. Yeah, I did hear
about that. Actually though, I didn't see a death
race, so I guess I can't really comment on that
one. That one's kind of schlocky. I wasn't a
big fan of safe. Definitely need to watch it.
You probably would love to have two of my favorite
words in there. Jason Statham and schlocky. Okay,
but it was home front more the lines of crank
or was it more the lines of like transporter?
I don't know. It wasn't I wouldn't really put
it close to any. There you go kind of like It
was something a little bit out of his wheelhouse
in my opinion like cuz He he spent like the beginning
of the movie trying to lay low cuz he's like
a police officer and stuff and him and his daughter
move out into Basically, it's a boondocks in
Louisiana Just trying to get away from everything
and lead a simple life and you know, of course
it ends up running into trouble there Which you
know, the good fighters always seem to run into
trouble wherever they go. It's weird how that
works But um But yeah, it was like I don't I'm
trying to think of something I can compare it
to like Rambo in that way or is it like a Steven
Seagal movie sort of yeah kind of like maybe
it's something like Steven Seagal try to get
out but they keep bringing me back in It's like
it's like Steven Seagal except was not with no
squinty eyes in the fact that he can bend so
But actually I remember seeing the trailer for
this like way back when and I wanted to see it
for a reason I never got to but actually what's
interesting is uh The screenplay was done by
Sylvester Stallone. There you get was so maybe
it is kind of like Rambo Yeah, and I wouldn't
say it's too much like that, but I know Stallone's
writing style by now, and it's definitely my
type of movie, so usually I know I'm gonna like
something that he does. When I saw that he did
the screenplay, I was like, yeah, that makes
sense, because this is totally my kind of movie.
I don't want to say it's a mindless action movie.
It kind of is, but it's... I don't want to like
dumb it down that much. It's not like terrible
and it's like no plot. I wouldn't say that. Like
it actually has a pretty decent plot to it. And
there's a couple other people are in it. There's
James Franco plays one of the bad guys. Winona
Ryder is in it as well. And we know she's bad
because she shoplifts. I enjoyed it a great deal.
Like if you're if you're a fan of Jason Statham,
like I know this movie kind of flew under the
radar a little bit, didn't get a lot of attention.
But if you haven't checked it out, I would definitely
recommend I think it's a pretty cool movie and
uh Hate to break it to you Chuck, but I think
home front is actually available on Netflix.
I think it is I guess when I looked for it, it
wasn't on there. Nope. Yeah, it is Okay That's
all right. I just I've done that many I've bought
it a movie before and I'm like, oh fuck it's
on Netflix Yeah, if you wanted to watch it again,
or if people want to watch it, it's on Netflix
Actually, I think I'm going to end up buying
it anyway. Just out of habit. If I really like
a movie, I like to have a hard copy of it. I
don't know why. I do too. Old habits die hard,
I guess. I don't know. Were you a fan of your
first Redbox experience? I guess I was a fan
of the movies, but not the whole experience.
fucking machine that I went to as a piece of
garbage. Pardon my French. I haven't had huge
issues with the machines. I haven't used it in
a while, but I tend to, the good thing is I tend
to get it online and then go up and pick it up
when I'm there, which is kind of cool. And then
I get codes and stuff like that, which is nice.
Yeah. Like I picked them out and I'm swiping
my card. I'm doing it both ways because you can
do it up and down. That's what she said. Apparently,
I didn't have it. I don't know. It wasn't working
exactly. I wasn't holding it at the exact like
friggin angle or something. I don't know. So
I ended up like trying it like 30 times. Didn't
work. So there's people behind me. So I'm like,
you know, why don't you guys go and you try it?
Yeah. So like they had trouble with it and they
didn't really find a movie they wanted anyway,
so they left. Oh, that sucks. Just jammed in
there, Chuck. So I tried again. And I'm trying
it and trying it and there's another guy behind
me like waiting to use it And he's like, oh usually
this one works better if you swipe up So I'm
like, okay, so I did it and it freaking works
the first I'm like I'm like I literally did it
like 40 times by now and it didn't work and right
after he says it it works I'm like what the hell
you like the font of the rose like oh, thanks
So, but no, it was pretty cool. I think it's
like a $1 .50 for DVDs now. Oh, really? Because
then, you know, with, with tax it came to $3
.18 for the two movies, which makes sense. See,
this is what happens when Blockbuster starts
going out of business. They start raising their
prices because you got no other choice, so. Yeah,
I know. You know, they get, they get a little
greedy and everything. What really makes no sense
to me is that there's a red box, like, streaming
service, kind of like Netflix, but you can, like,
you know, rent new movies, but to rent them online
is $5. But the physical copy, it's only adults
50. So I'm like, I don't understand that at all.
Why would be more? But the one thing that kind
of sucks about the red box is like they don't
have any of the special features on the desk.
It's only the movie, like it's only the feature
presentation, which isn't a huge deal. I mean,
usually I'm not paying a lot of attention to
special features anyway. But one quick thing
I want to mention, I. kind of forgot, but I wanted
to say how the two movies that I watched were
related. Really? And I didn't even realize this
when I picked them out. But I was watching Homefront
and one of the bad guys in that. Played by Frank
Grillo. Nice. So it was like Frank Grillo night.
I'm like watching these two movies. One of those
infamous, totally real nights. You know, these
kids are having nowadays. Yeah. And I'm like,
well. Now the number of movies I know he's in
is up to three. Have a Frank Grillo party, have
some Frank Grillo cheese. Because the whole time,
and I couldn't remember his real name, I'm like,
oh, that's Rumlow. That's who he played in The
Winter Soldier. Was it Brock Rumlow or something
like that? And I'm like, oh, it's Crass Bones,
it's Rumlow. I'm like, no, that's not his real
name, dammit. Very nice, but yeah, it was pretty
funny. That was like a little unexpected thing
already, but I think we're gonna take a quick
break Right now when we come back, we're actually
going to be uh, you know We know it's gonna get
it's gonna get hard things are gonna get serious
as we you know Look at our list of shame and
we reveal them to one another so The fun is just
getting started. I talked to this girl Amanda
on Skype. Greg got started early. I actually
put in my credit card information. We promise
no age verification is needed for the rest of
this podcast, so we'll see you in a bit. You
know, kids, a lot has changed while your old
uncle Joker's been away. New Gotham, new rules,
even a new Batman. It isn't 65 years in the future,
but Legends of the Dark Knight has gone beyond.
Batman -beyond, that is. Ah, the new boy. Ears
are too long and I missed the cape, but not too
shabby, not too shabby at all. Join Steve and
Mike as they delve into the remaining episodes
of the podcast where they'll cover Batman Beyond,
products, games, and more. Check it out only
on GeekCastRadio .com. Alright and welcome back
and yesterday we're gonna go through our list
of shame and for those that were kind of what's
like a list of shame now it's not bad things
we did that we're trying to admit though, you
know, we can't do that because a lot of Greg's
acts are currently pending in court, but a Lot
of poop involved. Yes. Yes. We're gonna be counting
down or going through different comic books movies
TV shows that are Very well regarded in the geek
community ones that people talk about her or
known To be like the best of the best that we
have yet to watch or read and uh, then what we're
gonna be best. And then to kind of make it a,
you know, put a little bit of a twist on it.
Well, we do homework episodes and that's typically
where we assign each other different things that
we feel like they should watch or read. Well,
we're going to have the opportunity to do that
for us this time around. I'm going to be putting
polls for each person with the different items
from their list of shame, and you're going to
vote on those and then tell us which ones we
should cross off first. And we're going to do
our best to then use those polls to then do another
homework assignment where we give feedback and
finally crossing off some of those big properties
that we have yet to partake in. Kind of like
a double episode here, you know, a little bit
of a tag team because that's how we do. So that'll
probably be happening. That is how we do. Yeah,
that'll be happening probably in a few weeks
or so, maybe near the end of February, because
depending on what it is, it might take some time.
But already, but anyone wants to step up and
get this thing kicked off by admitting to your
first item from your list of shame? I got hit
in the stomach and then I pooped my pants. That
will there you go. I'll do it. It's a way to
go with it. But again We're thinking more so,
you know movies and TVs Chuck I know you have
you have a big lift. See what you want to maybe
go down one of yours I Could it's it's so shameful
though So so embarrassing we're only pointing
our fingers and laughing at you. Don't worry.
Nothing bad will happen Everyone listening is
going to be like, how does this guy on a podcast?
He's never even watched these movies. Let's see.
I guess I could start with one that I have brought
up before, so I guess it's kind of a way to ease
in, maybe kind of just sticking my toe in the
water here, and that is the James Bond franchise.
I have never ever seen one single James Bond
movie. Wow. Wow. That is definitely she yeah,
I what I need to do is like give you my James
Bond or Let you borrow my James Bond set so you
can actually partake in the James Bond ness of
it all so not James Bond So not even one not
even the new ones not even one James Bond movie
No, I've seen uh I've seen like parts kind of
flipping through the TV, but I I felt like I
didn't want to pick something like that up in
the In the middle so yeah have you what if we're
gonna give Chuck James Bond movie to do which
one do you think which one would you recommend
them that's that's a that's a good question I'm
you like the Bourne franchise correct Chuck.
I do I'm thinking if you like the Bourne franchise
the first one that might. Be the best I would
say either GoldenEye which isn't like the Bourne
franchise but or casino so I don't know why I
said that but the reason I say that's because
Casino Royale is very much like around the same
lines of the Bourne film so I would say GoldenEye
or Casino Royale is probably the better one to
start with because a little bit more modern I
don't know how you - Is Casino Royale Daniel
Craig? Yeah, yeah. Okay. Casino Royale is the
first Daniel Craig film GoldenEye is the first,
uh, Pierce Brosnan one. Okay. Some of the older
films, the ones that stick out to me, my favorite,
like, older films would be, like, From Russia
with Love. I really like that. You Only Live
Twice, and GoldenEye, no, sorry, Goldfinger,
of course, but I don't know, Greg. I was waiting
for Goldfinger, because that was the one I was
going to suggest. Goldfinger! Do you think that's
a good one? Do you think that's a good one for
Chuck to watch in his first viewing? Yeah, I
really enjoy Goldfinger a lot, especially at
my butt. But yeah, I really like that one. That
one's probably the one that I've seen the most.
I can't really think of another title besides
that because all the titles kind of run together
of these weird... The beauty kill that one's
terrible. It does have Christopher walk -in.
It does not help out the issue. I would say like
since I'm thinking more so Pierce Brosnan gives
you a better idea of what the classic James Bond's
like, but Casino Royale takes it in a different
direction. You can kind of skip Quantum of Solace
and go to Skyfall, which I do think is available
on Netflix. I don't know if Casino Royale...
That was the better of the Daniel Craig. I'm
a big fan of the Daniel Craig ones. I don't understand
why. Are they just too good? James Bond is supposed
to be a handsome man. Daniel Craig looks like
he's gotten the shit beaten out of him with a
sock full of quarters. I don't know where that's
coming from. I don't know. He looks fine to me.
I feel an argument coming out about the handsomeness
of Daniel Craig. These are the best kind of arguments,
but I don't know. It seems like the ladies like
him, but I don't know. But I did see I did happen
to be flipping through one day and I saw the
scene where he was sitting naked in the chair
and the guy was smashing his balls with that.
Oh, yeah. That's a good scene, though. That is.
Which film was that? That's been seen around.
Yeah, because I saw that part and I was like,
that's like somebody did that to his face. Oh
man i don't get i think the only reason that
women like him is cuz he has money and cuz he
has a good body. See i can be creepy with men
i think you have a certain secure my sexuality.
I am I am drinking Makers marketing. I don't
know. I think you have a certain inviting you
with the drunkenness Maybe you have it. I don't
know. Maybe like you for your guys. They have
to look a certain exact way I guess I don't know
Jason Statham's good. I don't know. I never heard
anyone called Daniel Craig ugly before His face
looks terrible. Even my dad has agreed with me.
So I'd an old -school take on sides that he's
they're still really great movies I like I like
the campiness though of the old stuff. So Alright,
we should probably move on. I'm sorry. I'll go
with one that that's probably been mentioned
for me on the podcast before. And that is Alien.
Have you watched any of the Alien franchise?
I've only seen bits and pieces. And I think I've
seen Alien versus Predator, which is probably
not the best example of that movie. I think I'm
I think I'm at the same place as you. Because
I actually had this on my list, too. Interesting.
And I saw, well, I saw Prometheus, but didn't
see any of the other ones. And then I saw AVP.
You saw AVP, too? Yeah. As well, I mean. The
first Alien is more of a, like, I would say like
a horror thriller. So I know you guys aren't.
The biggest fan of those films. So I like horror.
Well, maybe I skew more towards campy. But yeah,
well, yeah, the first alien isn't really campy.
Well, there's there's like a couple of moments
that are kind of campy just because of, you know,
through time. But the second alien aliens is
more of like an action science fiction film So
you may you may be better off you think you'd
probably enjoy that one a lot more if you watch
aliens Alien 3 is kind of weird it like there's
some interesting parts to it But yeah alien and
aliens are the ones you kind of want to focus
on so aliens is cool because it has a colonial
marinas And they're pretty awesome There's only
movies are that are on my list and I kind of
grouped them together because Most of the geek
movies I've watched or you know for the most
part the only ones I haven't seen anymore the
critically acclaimed ones I still have yet to
watch like Lawrence of Arabia and a few others
but the biggest like hole for me regarding movies
or They're probably big hole. Yeah, it probably
Probably the horror franchise like I don't watch
it. There's a lot of horror movies. I have not
seen I've watched most of the Nightmare of Elm
Street I've watched like the first three or four
of those But what's kind of sad is with these
two franchises. I've watched the remakes But
I've yet to watch the originals and I've not
watched any of the Halloween franchise the John
Carpenter his first film or any of the other
ones I did actually see the remake done by Rob
Zombie by Rob Zombie I did see that in theaters
randomly enough and I haven't seen any the Friday
13th like similar to you guys are probably seen
bits and pieces here and there but I've never
sat down and watched one from getting the end
so And I have seen the remake of Friday the 13th
that was done by plant and dooms which was god
-awful, but in that I don't hate the remake done
by Rob Zombie the first Halloween But like I
said, that's coming from someone who hasn't watched
the originals. So yeah, that's my that's kind
of kind of get that off I know like horror fans
are probably like yelling at their their Podcast
right now because they're so infamous, but when
it comes to horror those I need a lot of catching
up to do But I've seen bits and pieces of them.
They're not they're not terrible Yeah, I I know
like most of the Friday 13th most of the Friday
13th is kind of not all that well regarded But
I know the first Halloween is it's supposed to
be one of the better horror movies of all time
Yeah, that one is pretty great. You've seen Halloween
Chuck Yeah, I haven't seen many of those either
but I'm kind of like you like I like I did see
the first one But then I saw like some of the
newer stuff I'm not a huge Freddy Krueger guy
either like That stuff seen them up to the third.
I think which would they're super corny to me
but then I saw like uh, some of the new ones
like freddy versus jason, which was kind of ridiculous
But seeing that still entertaining somehow we've
seen all the versus films alien versus predator
freddy versus jason and saw the individual ones
we're having trouble with But uh, all right chuck
you have anything else to admit on the podcast?
Um, unfortunately, I do I better not whip out
all the big ones, because people are going to
really think I'm a... That's all you can whip
out, Chuck. We all know. This is a pretty big
one, I think. Pretty high on a lot of people's
movie lists, but I have never seen Pulp Fiction.
Wow. Interesting. Have you just not been interested
in it, or do you think you won't enjoy it? I
never really felt interested in it before. I
feel like now maybe I would be a little bit more
open to watching it because I am a bit of a Samuel
L. Jackson fan. But I guess sort of just the
bits and pieces I saw of it sort of turned me
off and I never seemed too interested. But I
guess I'm kind of curious about why it's so highly
regarded. So I feel like I should kind of watch
it maybe. Yeah. Pulp Fiction is like probably
in my top 20 favorite films, but The current
Tarantino has a certain style to him. Have you
watched any of his other films like Reservoir
Dogs or Glorious Basterds or anything like that?
I don't believe so. Okay. Pulp Fiction is on
Netflix, so if you wanted to see it, you have
easy access to it. But have you seen Pulp Fiction,
Greg? I have. Have you enjoyed it? I believe,
I think. It was alright. Quentin Tarantino's
movies are... Interesting kinda crazy which kinda
intrigues me a little bit but there's always
something there that leaves me just a little
bit like not too crazy about the guy I think
my favorite movie from him was Inglorious Basterds
for the most part or Kill Bill Yeah, I love Tarantino
trying to think of I don't know what my favorite
film of him would be I mean Paul Fiction's up
there Reservoir Dogs is obviously really great
I also love Django Unchained but uh Pretty much
like everything he's done, honestly. I think
he's one of the directors who has a perfect filmography.
Perfect, Dan, perfect! He doesn't have a bad
movie. There's never a perfect, not kidding.
It's like, what was that, English class? There's
never a perfect paper. Yeah, exactly. I can't
get A's. Well, screw you. No such thing as a
hundred. I am interested in his... Movie coming
out this year. Isn't he doing hatefully? He is
doing the hateful eight. Yeah, and yeah some
kind of interesting Which is interesting because
he's not like the guy type of guy to do to the
same genre back -to -back but because he's a
Django on Shane and which is also on Netflix
and So I'm curious how that's gonna work out
Shane of Tatum starring in that and Samuel L
Jackson, of course, and I think Bruce Stern,
which is kind of cool because he's a good actor
He's older than all the boosters. Oh yeah, definitely.
He's older than the dirt they're gonna fill down.
Especially if you see Nebraska, he just looks
like, he's like the epitome of everything that's
old. Alright, Greg, what's next on your list?
I'll go with Predator. Never really see I feel
like I shouldn't be saying that one since I've
already said alien I've seen alien versus predator.
I've seen both of them. I mean like here's me
Yeah, kind of like I could watch alien or can
watch predator organs watch them together and
you know cross both off the list Yeah, pretty
much. I haven't seen either of those, Alien or
Predator, but I have seen Alien versus Predator.
Well, if you like campy fun, Predator is a lot
more campy than that of Aliens or Alien, so you
might like that one a little bit more. Plus,
it's got Schwarzenegger, and one of the most
intense kind of high fives of all time, which
is named from Paul Creed. I can't think of his
real name. How are weathers and Schwarzenegger
have like the most like that this high five?
Which is just like flexing like their muscles
are just gigantic. It's so funny the most powerful
Yeah, the history of film on it may have been
the big bang. It could have been something like
that But yeah, think think like total opposite
of Tom Brady. Yeah And then you can watch predator
2 which has Danny Glover taking that, you know
fighting against predators, so He's too old for
that shit. He really is. Only this time in the
concrete jungle of the city instead of an actual
jungle. You know, it's weird. You would think
like you go from only Danny Glover can go from,
you know, fighting a predator to dealing with
something more crazy in Mel Brooks in the in
the lethal weapon. So Mel Gibson, Mel Gibson,
not Mel Brooks. That's not the right person.
Different mouths. It's good to be the king. Next
for me is actually gonna go into the first graphic
novel of the night and I have a lot of like infamous
graphic novels I have not read which is kind
of sad mostly in the world of DC and some of
the more like especially stuff in the 80s that
kind of just flew by me or came out way before
my time and This one I feel bad of. What's kind
of sad is that I haven't read this but I've watched
the movies and I don't know if that's good or
if that is cheating or what have you, but I have
not read the infamous story by Frank Miller,
The Dark Knight Returns. That's okay Dan I haven't
either. I have. It was okay. It wasn't like a
lot of people like there's Kevin Smith out going
like it blew their minds in the world of comic
books. I just thought it was okay. I'm not sure
if it's because I've read it after reading so
much modern comic books that have maybe come
out of that so I'm kind of. A little bit more
jaded, I guess, but it wasn't that great, if
you ask me. It was okay, but... You also don't
like Pulp Fiction, though, so maybe I like it
better. No, I didn't mind Pulp Fiction. Like
I said, I haven't read it. I watched the DC animated
movies of the two versions of it, which I don't
know how... How well that relates to to it or
like how closely how closely that follows the
actual story itself. But I just know for like
importance factor because a lot of people do
say like that was the book that made Batman cool
again and like made him kind of get over the
whole campiness from the Adam West era and gave
us Batman 89 and gave us Batman you know eventually
would give us the animated series and the Dark
Knight and all that so it's like look at it seems
like it's one of those. you know, books that's
more infamous for what it did for the character.
So like I said, I haven't yet to read it, but
I just feel like I have to. It's kind of like
one of those things that you kind of just need
it for background knowledge of the character.
Yeah, I've always felt like I have to too, but
I've sort of been, I guess, actively protesting
it and putting it off as long as I can because
just from things I've things I've read about
it, like, you know, basically. Frank Miller just
hates Superman and he basically just wanted to
write his own version of the story where Batman
kicks his ass and to me it just seemed like a
- Go Frank Miller. It just seemed like a 12 year
old kid writing his own version of it and like
- Not that I'm comparing his writing to 12 -year
-old kids, obviously. He's an excellent writer.
If you read Somerset in City, it does sound like
a 12 -year -old at times. I will get to that
at some point, too. I agree with you, but I've
just been putting it off because it didn't interest
me that much. This might sound bad, but from
what I've read of Frank Miller, I've never been
the most gigantic fan of his stuff. I remember
his Daredevil stuff, which I heard is People's
argues maybe his best stuff, but wasn't a big
fan of Sin City like I like the movie It's just
kind of I don't know It's it feels like a guy
who isn't like love with like just being tab
violence and taboo But doesn't really offer more
than that and it was just kind of like yeah But
I know that's probably sacrilegious for a lot
of people though I hear a lot of people are kind
of turning the tide when it comes to sex from
Sin City and more people are Seeming to kind
of reevaluate It's overall quality maybe since
frank miller has just gone off the edge and it's
completely crazy now. So I don't know but uh
truck i'll bring it back to you. Do you have
anything else on your list? I do let's see. Uh,
i'm gonna throw this one out there next. This
is another movie uh harrison ford movie star
wars No, I I have seen all the star wars several
times No, actually I was talking about uh blade
runner i've never seen blade runner and i know
it's like uh some people anyway regard it as
one of like the greatest movies for some reason
so i was always kind of curious about that but
i never got the chance to watch it so uh it's
pretty decent the sad part is there's like a
trillion different versions of it so it's hard
to even know which one to pick i've only read
watched think like the director's cut or the
third version of it i'm not sure there's so many
different takes on it but it is i think i've
seen the director's cut yeah which is I heard
not don't bother with the original cut and the
not the final one. But yeah, I've it's really
slow I will say that it is it does take its time
It's well shot though. Oh, yeah, it's a gorgeous
film. It's definitely influential influential
like if you look at fifth element like that entire
world is basically based upon that of the Blade
Runner universe, so it's Very heavy material
I would say I think it's certainly worth watching
just like similar to like something like the
Dark Knight Returns just because it's such a
huge staple within the world of science fiction
that a lot of Stuff that's you almost kind of
appreciated on that end because you can see a
lot of stuff That's today which has certainly
been influenced by Blade Runner. Did you like
Blade Runner Greg? Thought it was alright. It
wasn't my favorite movie of all time. I do like
Harrison Ford I don't think it was as slow as
you're suggesting It's been a while since I've
seen it though. It seriously has been a while.
Yeah, I do have it on Blu -ray or DVD I forget
which format but uh, I didn't think it was that
bad Definitely like Harrison Ford It left me
a little confused about what the hell was going
on, but it was interesting to watch. It is one
of those movies that people have taken a million
different ways and whatnot. All right, Greg,
anything left for you? I've seen the movies and
I've loved the original. This last take of it
was awful for me, but I have never read the Teenage
Mutant Ninja Turtle comics at all. Interesting.
None of them. Either have I. I have not read
one. Nice. Have you read them, Chuck? I have.
I've read some of them. And just recently, in
fact, I was going to talk about that on an upcoming
issue, but, or issue, yeah, upcoming episode.
I've read, I think so far I've read the first
three issues. Nice. Of the Eastman and Laird,
like from 1984. And they're really long issues,
too. Interesting. Which is kind of weird, but
um, yeah, maybe i'll hopefully get to talk about
that at some point i'm I bought like a comprehensive
volume of uh The first like seven issues. I think
nice And I think i'm on like the fourth one,
but it's actually pretty great. I love it a lot
Yeah, i've heard a lot of great things about
like this the idw series that started a few years
ago But yeah, i'm not i'm not i'm right there
with you greg I have yet to read any of the any
of the graphic novels, but i'm assuming you have
watched the cartoon, right? Oh, yeah, definitely
have watched cartoons. That's what that's that
and the movies what kicked it off for me. So
I will say the first 90s movie Like it's pretty
much taken right from the first issue. Oh really
of the comics like it's it's amazing How much
stuff they nailed in that movie like it's it's
pretty cool cool for people When that movie came
out, they felt like it was more in line with
the comics than the cartoon, which I guess makes
sense All right, well I've I went over a movie
so far I went over a graphic novel So I'm gonna
kind of go into something different. I don't
know if we talked about TV yet Do we mention
TV any TV at this point? I guess we mentioned
breaking bad early in the episode, but uh I think
you've watched this series. I don't think Chuck
you have and it's actually one that's had like
two series there are two I guess original series
and then a reboot and if it wasn't for Greg I'd
probably be putting Doctor Who right here, but
I'm putting another infamous science fiction
series that was been on TV and that's Battlestar
Galactica. I have not watched any episodes of
that series. Old or new? Old or new? Either.
Which one are we talking about? I have not watched
either one or the new one. I've seen bits and
pieces of the old one, it looks awful to me for
some reason, my parents like to watch that. And
I have started watching Battlestar Galactica
the newer one a while ago and I still have not
finished it Dan, I still haven't finished it.
I think I have like one more season left, I don't
know why but it's... Good, but it just taken
me a while to get through. For some reason, something's
not really appealing to me, I guess. I don't
know, but it's taken me a while to get through
Battlestar Galactica. Yeah. The sad part is,
I think the first time I really even had any
interest was from watching The Office. You know,
it's like, uh, it's way true. Yeah. You know,
Bear's Beats and Battlestar Galactica. But I've
not watched Battlestar Galactica at all. for
whatever reason and never really appealed to
me and I remember we went to like Wizard World
and Philly and like the entire cast was there
like and we walked by them and I had no idea
who any of them were so and I know it's a really
high regarded geek show I don't think it's nearly
like as infamous as like Doctor Who or some other
ones or another TV series I'll get to before
we finish but uh, yeah, I don't know maybe I'll
finally get the chance to check it out Unfortunately,
only the original series is on Netflix right
now, which is kind of disappointing Oh, really?
I guess I missed out on watching the video. Finishing
that up, apparently. It'll probably come back.
But all right, Chuck, bringing it back over to
you. OK, my next one. I'm going to go to TV as
well. Nice. And this one's really embarrassing,
I think, for me. Full house? Now I've I've seen
probably it's probably embarrassing the opposite
way that I've seen too many Yeah, I've seen too
many flaws. We should do the opposite list of
shame stuff We're sad we've watched too much
of and on that list for me would definitely be
glee. So I Would be bad if we had a music category
there Spice Girls. Oh the the movie No, the their
their first album. Did you buy it? That's all
right. I thought that's cuz I bought for crushes.
Yeah, I bought the space jam jet soundtrack So,
you know, I also have that and and I read this
the space jam novel. So, you know Yeah, there
was You know, what do they call it when they
the Book adaptations of the space jam. Yeah,
it's totally red So yeah, yeah, cuz you know,
I you need to learn more about how that world
functions. So Great. Yeah, sorry Chuck. What
is the TV series that you're ashamed that you've
never watched? Very ashamed. This is a big one.
I have never watched any of the original Star
Trek episodes. Me either, if not. I have. You
have, Craig? Yeah, the originals are pretty good.
I'm not a... The second iteration with Patrick
Stewart, I think, are pretty decent as well.
I haven't watched beyond that, but the originals
are good if you're up for something campy. Yeah,
like I have seen some, not a whole lot, but I
have seen some of the Patrick Stewart era episodes,
and some of those were actually pretty cool,
I thought. But I just hear, like, I hear everyone
talking about How much better the older ones
are and I know there's like debate and that stuff
too, but everyone says like how much better Captain
Kirk is and all that all the old school stuff.
So I just got a problem with the originals are
they're kind of slow as I totally take out what
I said earlier, but They're kind of slow from
what I've at least from the Star Trek fans. I
know I think more people Like the new the Star
Trek next generation. I think maybe it depends
on the fandom. Oh, okay I know like he cash radio
did a wars episode and I think the next generation
kind of one hands down But I don't know if that's
just because of the people that depends on the
Trekkies I guess I don't know or trekkers. I
don't know what they prefer to be caught Might
depend on the age group that you're talking to
at that particular time. It does Yeah, it probably
it probably has a huge effect on it. I know I
know like a lot of people look at the original
definitely for its like its impact regarding
science fiction in a lot of ways, but uh I mean
I've seen all the original movies like I watched
all those and I've watched episodes of the next
generation But I've not watched any the original
to just I don't know. I just can't there's two
to two can't be for me I guess a little too but
it's maybe if I went back and watched it with
an open mind. I'd like it Yeah, that's that's
kind of why I never really Was interested in
it cuz like you know you just see things like
flipping through or you see clips here and there
and it was just like I think though the bad thing
is most of the clips we see are like the worst
moments because people like making fun of it.
All right. All right, Greg. You got anything
else? Let's go with the Terminator is if you
guys have consistently. ragged on me for not
seeing. I've seen bits and pieces of them. I've
caught the endings of them, but I have not seen
an entire movie of... Arnold Schwarzenegger as
Terminator all the way through so interesting
Well, I definitely think with a new one coming
out that might be one that might win the poll
for you. So Because it has Amelia Clarke in it.
Is that why you're saying I don't know Chuck
if you were gonna tell him to watch one Terminator,
which one do you think you would choose? I Don't
know see I'm a weird case cuz like everyone always
says that the second one is the best but for
me like The very first one has a soft spot in
my heart, kind of, because I watched that when
I was really small and it scared the crap out
of me. But with that sort out of the equation,
obviously, because Greg is much older than I
was when I saw it. I think I was like six years
old when I watched it. I scare real easy, Chuck.
I don't know if much is a six -year -old question.
I watched it when I was like six or seven years
old scared the shit out of me when he was crawling
through that little. Oh, yeah, yeah. And but
I it's going to be corny, though. So I would
say I would probably say the second one. I mean,
you'd probably there's there's a certain charm
to the first one for sure, because it's such
like a low budget, like almost little like more
grit to it. And yeah, it definitely feels you
can watch the second one without watching the
first one. But I think definitely it. I heard
some people talking the other day about how like
They actually the second one was the first one
that they saw out of the franchise and They had
sort of grown up and then watched the first one
and they were they had no idea He was bad at
one time. Yeah They were like, wait a minute.
He was bad. And then now he's like, okay now
he's helping John Connor and but I did see it
from the beginning and it you're right. It does
have a charm and it's it's kind of good to get
the little Background on it because that's where
it all started and like yeah It's just got that
like early 80s feel that if you like that type
of stuff you might like it's definitely I've
never really been a big fan of the 80s and I'm
going to get what Maybe maybe early 80s is even
right, but maybe like 70s ish because it's like
It very like it's not like Sylvester Stallone.
It's more, you know, low budget and more like
simple. It's almost like a horror film in a lot
of ways. I think they treat it more like a horror
movie. I have to take exception to this 80s comment.
Listen, from 1985 to 1995 was like the best the
best 10 years in this like millennium in the
history of the world. You know, a lot of good
stuff happens. A lot of good stuff happens. I'll
agree to disagree. I'd ever float your boat,
I guess. Yeah. It's mostly music for me in the
80s that kills me, because I had the one girl
at work. It used to be that, uh, take on me.
Take on me. Oh, that's not representative of
the 80s. She had that play. That's an outlier.
She always had that as a ringtone and it ticked
me off because I heard it so much I didn't like
that song to begin with the music video was freaky
to me. I Just just throw in some 80s movies soundtracks
like the Top Gun soundtrack. I do like that though
The Rocky 4 soundtrack But they said rocky horror.
I'm like that sounds I thought he said rocky
horror. I realized it's chalk and it would never
be rocky horror. That was unexpected Alright,
so that was Greg with Terminator Next sure me
is another graphic novel. Which is sad is that
I've watched the movies. I haven't read the book
I think that's kind of you know a lot of people
are shaking their fists if you look at like any
list of best graphic novels up to all times is
usually like one or two Always up there, but
I've never read it and watch the movie never
read the book and that is watchmen Pretty good
pretty close to the movie except for the ending
I didn't like the story of the the comic within
the comic that was read the pirate story kind
of it Yeah, I didn't care for the pirate story.
I just wanted to get past that but I think it
was kind of Integral to how it was how everything
was set up. I guess a little bit but I wanted
to skip over all that Yeah, I like know a lot
about it. I've read a lot about it. I've But
I've never actually sat down and read it I just
think I even like borrowed it for you know took
it out from the library at one point and just
This is gonna sound bad, but sometimes like I
need to be in the right mood to like read a comic
that has like the old 80s art style I'm spoiled
with the new stuff and like like the look of
today So I just I just have to get in the right
mood for it kind of kind of thing. So that's
a good story It's it's pretty close to what the
movie is I think that hurts it too when I've
watched the movie then you I know kind of what
happens. So it's already Kind of small. Yeah,
so it's almost hesitant to go back and read it
because I've already know the story for the most
part. So it's like, I'd rather read Kingdom Come
because I've never read that and I don't know
that story at all. So, but I don't know. Chuck,
have you read it at all? Have I read Watchmen?
No, I have not. Have you seen Watchmen, the movie?
I saw a good amount of it. Never watched it beginning
to end, but I saw quite a bit of the movie. I
thought it was interesting, but not really, not
really my up my alley. Yeah, that makes sense.
All right, Chuck, I think maybe we can make this
the last round and then we can finish this episode
up. So what's your, I guess, I know you have
a lot there. So I don't know if you want to write
off a few or if you want to just go with your
most, the one that you feel like you're the most
shameful of that you have left. Okay. Yeah. I
know I've done, I think I've done three movies
and a TV show so far. So I guess I'll go into
the graphic novel realm and This one's really
embarrassing considering how much I like this
title, and it's an X -Men story. This is, of
course, something that Dan loves. Dan loves this
story, and I was with him when he got a great
deal on this story, and that is X -Men Age of
Apocalypse. Really? Yeah. I have not read Age
of Apocalypse all the way through. Have you read
any of it, or just some of it? Maybe like an
issue here and there really and the sad part
is I have all of them. I have all the graphic
novels there's five volumes. I have volumes one
through four and I have the prelude to Age of
Apocalypse. Haven't haven't read them yet. It's
just always it always seemed so daunting. Yeah.
And that because it's five volumes and like I
never for whatever reason never got into it.
But I do know like, like a little bit about it
and like stuff like, uh, that we've discussed
before, but to know the ins and outs of it, I,
I couldn't talk about it because I haven't read
it. So. Wow. Yeah. That's, that's surprising.
Funny. I just always assume that you've read
that. So that's, if I could put my vote in anything,
I think it would be age of apocalypse. So if
I can influence the vote at all, which I don't
know if that's cheating, I would say go with
that one. Yeah. And I'm looking at them right
now on my shelf, but. It's just for whatever
reason I haven't read them Alrighty well Greg.
I don't know if you have anything left that you
want to admit before we end this episode Yeah
So it's like a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles I've
seen the movie never read the comic and it's
also got a new version coming out I've never
read the Ghostbuster comics. I'm not even sure
how Close it is to the movies, but I've never
read them I know TGF one Mike was suggesting
that I read Ghostbusters with the Teenage Mutant
Ninja Turtles whatever that name of that series
was but I've never read anything Ghostbuster
related Just watched if it makes you feel any
better Greg. I didn't even know there were Ghostbuster
comic Yeah, I was actually the same thing. I
didn't even There were Ghostbuster comics. I
know they had the crossovers, but I didn't even
know that was like a thing So I believe it is
Yeah, I guess it makes sense. But have you watched
the any of the Ghostbusters cartoons? Hell yeah
real Ghostbusters. Tell me I've watched how about
the reboot that happened like in like I think
that early 2000s or in 90s I forget have not
seen that bother. It's like extreme Ghostbusters
and the only person I think comes back for that
is like Egon so Yeah, it's weird. It's like I
forget the the premise of it, but it was it was
not it was not very good It was like it existed
in like the same universe as real Ghostbusters,
but it was with new people and stuff like that.
So it sounds weird. It's not worth it. But yeah.
All right. So I guess technically maybe some
of the ones that I've mentioned already are more
acclaimed than this one. But the reason I'm saving
this one for last, just because the person who
created it is like the man in the world of geekdom
right now. Like he's he's one of the most infamous
people in the world of geek. He's got a huge
fandom, he's done a lot of TV, and this is kind
of like the thing that made him famous. And the
sad part is, running theme here, I've watched...
Can I guess this, Dan? Sure, go ahead. Is it
Buffy? It's not Buffy, but you're on the right
track. I've watched episodes of Buffy, my wife's
actually a big fan of that show, so I've watched
episodes of Buffy, seen a little bit of Angel,
but I've not watched any episodes of Firefly.
So yeah, I've yet to watch any episodes I don't
know why like remember starting one and then
fit not finishing it But I have watched Serenity
and I do own it. So You know the TV show that's
based on not watched it watch the movie though,
so Sadly, I think when I first saw the movie
didn't know it was based on the TV show. So Very
very short -lived. Yeah. Yeah. I mean that was
way back when I figure when that came out but
uh Yeah, it was like I just was out of the world
of geekdom at that point and but uh since then
I just haven't again gone back to it I really
want to because I loved I love shredding the
movie but uh heard good things but yet to partake
in It is a really good TV show. So if you feel
Like, you know, that's something I should watch
the work. Oh, maybe just go down my list of shame
again If you go to geekcastradio .com, I'll have
These all posted but I went over Firefly I indicated
I've get to want read the Dark Knight returns
or Watchmen You get to watch Battlestar Galactica
and yes, I've and I've yet to watch any of the
movies from Friday the 13th or Halloween franchise
So those were my items from the list of shame,
but Chuck what were yours? Mine were James Bond
franchise any of those pulp fiction Blade Runner
Star Trek original TV series all right and Age
of Apocalypse So quite the variety there and
lastly Greg, what were yours? We've got alien.
We've got predator, but I have seen alien We've
got Terminator we've got the Ghostbusters comics
and we've got the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle
comics. So like I said You have the opportunity
to kind of influence us and tell us what we should
go off of our list of shame and we'll going and
we'll do that in an upcoming episode but before
we end the show we like to end each episode with
a letter and when he started the show I mentioned
my Week was kind of like a whirlwind because
we got great news that spiderman is coming to
mcu but then later that day got a little bit
of a bittersweet news and when i learned that
uh in the world learned i should say that the
john stuart will be leaving the daily show in
you know the upcoming months so Kind of it's
kind of sad as someone who's watched the Daily
Show before John Stewart was even on it and saw
the evolution of it It's just I can't imagine
that show without him. So I kind of kind of wrote
that in retrospective of him Finding out that
he'll be leaving It is Daily and it is the show
earlier this week We were given some sad news
that John Stewart will be stepping down from
this Daily Show after nearly 17 years in the
chair This coming not long after Colbert left
his show to replace David Letterman Colbert living
his show was bittersweet, but this news is quite
the blow. I've been watching the Daily Show even
before Stuart hosted, and I even remember the
apprehension of seeing Stuart take over for Craig
Kilborne as people were worried the show would
not be the same. And it turns out it wasn't.
Stewart and his staff transformed the show from
a novelty act to the epitome of political satire
that was equally intelligent and hilarious. Of
course he didn't do it alone as he allowed others
to equally shine. I'm happy to say I've had the
opportunity to see people like Ed Helms, Rob
Cauldry, Lewis Black, David Tell, Colbert and
- even Steve Carell come into their own as comedians.
One of my all -time favorite segments was even
Stevens where Carell and Colbert would face off
on a number of topics with Stewart stuck in the
middle. Now in hindsight it's like being able
to watch Larry Burr, Michael Jordan, and Magic
Johnson play a pickup game before they got famous.
Three of the biggest names in comedy kind of
breaking out right before our eyes. The Daily
Show became an outlet that called out the insanity
of the new system we lived in, whether it was
calling out politicians or news stations that
cover them, Sirup became that other sane person
in the room that would go to verify the craziness
and everything they're seeing is in fact real.
He made political comedy cool again, and thanks
to him we now have shows like Larry Wilmore,
Last Week Night, and how they've even taken what
he did and involved it even further. There are
many defining moments of Stewart's tenure, and
it feels inappropriate just to pick one, but
if I did it, it probably would have to be his
first show after 9 -11. It showed everything
that makes Stewart such a unique talent. Earnest,
honest, and appropriately hilarious. The biggest
compliment I think I can give him is the fact
that it's so difficult to even think of someone
that's going to replace him. Someone who's equally
funny, smart, can both interview celebrities
and debate politicians. Whoever it is, they surely
have much bigger challenge ahead of them than
Seward when he first took over. Just to put it
in perspective, how much the show has changed
and how bigger it's gotten. Since his first days
in his chair, the show's ratings have increased
400%. Yes, 400 % since he first took over. quite
the leap from this just random show on a cable
network no one watches to almost a news force
that people go to every night. Whatever Stuart
does next, if it's directing, comedy, news, what
have you, I think whatever it is, he definitely
deserves many moments of that. So sad to see
him go, but definitely looking forward to seeing
what the Daily Show has left when he leaves,
if it stays. But yeah, I was it's quite sad to
hear that but uh, it's I guess He kind of hinted
at it a few times. There was actually an interesting
interview with Potter Odenkirk He had the week
before where he's like mentioning that yeah,
it's time for him to leave and I thought he was
joking but he wasn't so And I guess he he might
be stepping down in November or so But anyways,
but like I said if you go to geecastradio .com
I'll be putting up those posts for the different
list of shame and we can work on getting those
For upcoming episodes next week. We're gonna
have a little bit of a different episode though
as the Oscars will be coming out we're gonna
take the Oscars and do a little bit of a geek
spin and Coming out next week to you. You're
gonna hear the key cash radio awards. We're hopefully
we're talking in circles Well, hopefully, you
know win that illustrious award for best GCR
and core podcast and if we don't we're blaming
you Yeah, we also have a suicide pact, so that's
on you guys. Yeah, about that. None of us signed
that, Greg. Oh, damn it. I guess it's me by myself.
Going to that well one more time. Hey, that's
what we do here. What? Something about shitting
in a bucket or something? I don't know. Yeah,
exactly. But yeah, all right, anything else before
we bring this episode to a close? This episode
was brought to you by Makersmart. Alrighty. Well,
like I said, why don't we get in contact with
us? You can email us at feedback at keycastradio
.com or talkingincirclesatlive .com. Don't know
why you'd even bother giving those out because
no one ever emails. Or you can go to Twitter
and Facebook and just search talkingincirclesTCRN.
And like I mentioned, best place to get in contact
with us, go to geekcastreader .com or nerdy .co
.uk. And we will commerce with you there. So
all right, well, that'll be it for this week.
We'll be back next week. Same time, same channel,
same podcast feed. But for now, this has been
Chuck. This has been Greg or the 20th iteration
of Spider -Man. And this has been Dan and we've
been talking in circles. We'll see you next week.
You know, in the first Spider -Man movie with
Tobey Maguire where he had the little hairs coming
out of his thumbs, I actually have those and
I can crawl up the wall just by my chest. Nice,
nice. There you go, there you go. I know. If
you can get the snarky remarks and, you know,
you just need to have some sort of bad thing
happen to you so great power comes with great
responsibility. And I'd be also the first creepy
perverted spider -man that also would use your
your web powers for bad I'm sure like oh, I'm
sorry. Did I get your shirt? I apologize Oh,
I got that all over you. You know what else I
can get and that's it
