Talking in Circles
Geek Power Rankings Debut

About this Episode
Hi, this is Kyle Higgins and you're listening
to the Geek Patch Radio Network. You are now
on the inside of what I like to call the circle
of trust. We are all connected in a great circle
of life. You know something, Bert? What? I think
you and I are going in circles. It feels like
we're going in circles. The circle is now complete.
When I left you, I was but the third. Now I am
the last. Because it's a circle. Yeah, we heard
about the circle. Yeah, that's what a million
would say. Hi, this is Chuck. This is Greg. And
this is Dan, and we are Talking in Circles, brought
to you by the UCAS radio network, the podcast
that's number one in the power rankings for Talking
in Circles. At least, I hope you are. hoping
for it. We are having a little new idea for this
week. We always try to do different and new things
and this week we are doing geek power rankings
and you may be asking what are geek power rankings
and that's a good question because we're still
kind of figuring that out ourselves but the idea
is taking something like the NFL power rankings
and What's trending and Twitter and combining
it into one figuring out? What are the biggest
things right now in geek culture and counting
it down? So we'll be working that out trying
to figure out what's number one till down to
what's number ten So that should be a lot of
fun. We'll be getting to that shortly But before
we get to all that how's the week been going
for you guys pretty horrible? I've been have
been pretty sick this week. I apologize if I
sound nasally tonight at all is Question does
your sickness at all relate to the Dolphins loss?
It may or may not I Thought it was like this
allergy thing at first I still don't really know
but I had a pretty nasty head cold and Still
kind of stuffy and everything, but I do feel
a lot better, but actually missed like two days
of work this week So is this transmittable by
podcast? Yes I'm gonna wear one of those masks
you see like people wearing all the time in like
Asia and whatnot so yeah that'll help you or
maybe Bane's mask you ever think that's why you
wore that he's just really health conscious that's
you know people well he is pretty fit I think
he had a touch of laryngitis there too Apologize
if I sound nasally, but I'll do my best to perhaps
disguise my voice Let's just make the podcast
fun even later when we get into the next episode
of unknown. So Yeah, I probably won't even sound
like the character. Who the hell is that some
new character? Very nice very nice, but Greg.
How's your week been going pretty good. I saw
Mario this morning, which was pretty interesting
Mario No, not Mario Lopez Mario from the Super
Mario Brothers some random dude was walking down
the street as I was driving to work and He had
blue overalls on a red t -shirt and a red hat
and he had a mustache I'm not sure he was just
walking randomly down the street I'm not sure
if it was intentional if he was trying to look
like Mario from the video games or what but he
was like a spitting image of a real -life Mario
Hide your turtles and mushrooms which which don't
hide your mushrooms. I hate mushrooms. So let
them stop those out, please Yeah, I'm right there
with you mushrooms. Why would you eat a fungus?
I don't understand. There's a fungus among us
Very nice. Well, I had a pretty uneventful week
until this morning where I made the Illogical
choice to lock myself out of my apartment So
why'd you do that? Well, I thought I wanted adventure
in the morning, but basically I was walking outside
of my apartment and I locked my door and But
I didn't I locked it from the inside and I closed
it and right when I closed it I realized I don't
have my keys with me right now And I live on
the lowest level. So I'm like, well, I got a
couple options here I have a back when a back
door. So maybe that's open. Maybe I didn't unlock
it. And so I go back to check that's locked But
I also have a window. But the thing is, where
my apartment's located, it's next to a field
where people can see in. And so it's like a bunch
of people could see me going into this window.
So I had to prop open my window. Tried to climb
myself up this window into my apartment while
I'm sure I got a number of calls of someone trying
to break into my place because all you see is
myself like trying to lunge over this window
and It's right in the kitchen the kitchen tables
right there. So I got a crash course into Breaking
into my own apartment, which was nice So but
it was it was now, you know how to keep others
out by you trying to get in Yeah, I I ended up
luckily the window wasn't locked but now I know
to lock it the sad thing is Ended up going back
and realizing The door that I thought was locked
wasn't locked. I was just kind of opening it
in the wrong way. So it's like I did all that
for nothing. So it's like sorry to laugh at your
trouble. It was OK. And then I ended up being
late for work because I took control. I'll do
that. And traffic was bad. So it was just like,
yeah. And I had to make that call to be like,
yeah, I'm going to be running a little bit late.
I kind of locked myself out. So but yeah, it's
not like it has not happened before. And my wife
did it. Previously, so I guess we just need to
stop doing that so It made today fun, but I'm
actually really excited too because that's my
last really busy day at work tomorrow So I get
my life back and also big news in Baltimore light
I know big news in Baltimore Baltimore Orioles
you knew al East champions. So yeah Yeah, it's
it's an exciting time finally good sports news
in Baltimore. So it's been a while, but it's
an exciting time It's awesome. I didn't go to
the game myself I wish I did but it was just
it's been a lot of fun My wife just bought me
a Manny Machado Jersey, which I which is great.
I'm like, oh great. He's injured, but it's awesome
Oh, I didn't know that. I'm like, it's fine.
It's like he'll I mean he's coming back. He's
a great player. I can't wait. Oh, yeah, so That's
awesome. But yeah, it's I can't wait for the
playoffs to start. Hopefully. I mean, Orioles
got a good shot. I mean, they have a lot of injuries
and whatnot, but I'm looking forward to postseason
in Baltimore. It's been a while. The last time
they won the Ale East was 1997. And last time
they won it in Baltimore was 47 years ago. So,
you know, Baltimore has been waiting a while
for this. All right. But besides that, I also
I say I. don't have a life right now because
I'm working, but I did get a chance to read a
few things. A few weeks ago I talked about a
couple books. I don't know if you guys remember.
I picked them up. They're both image books. They're
called Deadly Class and East of West. Mm -hmm.
I remember you picking those up Yeah, and I finally
sat down and I I ended up going home the other
weekend and while my wife was driving I got a
chance because it's a three and a half hour drive
to read some so I ended up reading east of both
of them which is exciting because I wanted to
read some of my stuff that I got from comic -con
but I'm like Wait, I got to read the other stuff
first. It's only right I have like my own personal
cue of comics right now. So I think we all do
at this point exactly We buy but we don't always
read So, it's always easier to buy. Oh, it is.
It is much easier to buy. Yeah. So, I'll just
touch upon them briefly. And I'll actually first
talk about Deadly Class because the new issue
of it actually just came out this week. And to
give you a brief overview of it, like I said,
it's done by Image Comics. It's a comic that
is really interesting in a lot of different ways.
The premise of it is kind of out there, but not
completely. It's kind of hard to kind of describe,
honestly, at first. But its basic premise is
a class of high school students that are in the
school that's like an assassin school. But it's
not at all what you would expect. It takes place
in like the early 1990s and late 80s, basically.
It centers around this one kid who has had a
really troubled life. He's an immigrant. And
when he was coming over to the country, his parents
were killed. He basically was in foster home
and he was homeless. And during that time period,
basically, he's been trying to struggle to live.
And he ended up getting involved with this assassin
class. And it was like his only shot at living,
basically was to come to this class of the school
that trains these assassins or, you know, go
to jail and possibly get killed. On the streets,
so he ends up kind of getting into this world
and being in since this world a lot of really
colorful really strange characters I don't want
to say it's very emo ish because that's not I
think that's unfair because I think it's it's
realistic drama, but it feels like if the guy
who Wrote fear and loathing in Las Vegas wrote
a comic book. It could kind of be like that class
There's a lot of influences there. The art though
is fantastic. It's one of my it's a different
art style. It's very almost like Tim Burton -esque
in some ways. But it's a really interesting book.
It's really well written. It's kind of a comic
book. If someone told me, hey, I hate superheroes.
I think comic books are just about superheroes
and nothing interesting. I'd give them dead to
class and say, hey, this is actually a really
cool book with a cool concept that goes in some
unexpected directions because it really fleshes
out these characters who have had really struggled
lives. And it's all about like... Taking the
idea of high school and amping it up to even
higher levels because these kids aren't just
in high school They're in this high school full
of gangsters and assassins ninja like all these
people that have to keep up this rep about being
badasses and if they in whatnot and it goes through
all these different ideas and I Pick up the first
volume and I read through it in about a few hours
and it was fantastic Maybe not even a few hours,
but it was just really good. I would highly recommend
it Chuck I don't know if you would like it a
great deal because it is it's pretty violent.
It deals with some drug use as well But Greg
you might enjoy it. I'm not sure but I think
it's a comic that's not for everyone Evil son
of a bitch in this podcast I know Chuck sensibilities.
I don't know if it'd be something you would like
that much because one of the characters I know
you really like characters that have a good moral
code or you know someone you know Those that
you could really respect and these characters
are all pretty horrible people Yeah, so, I don't
know if it's something that you would you would
find great enjoyment of but uh I would say maybe
pick up the first issue and see if you like it.
The first volume was only ten dollars and that's
why I do love How they get you hooked exactly
I was at the thing where they you know increase
it as the volumes go along exactly exactly So
it's I would say pick up it's only ten dollars
and I think it's it's well worth it See if you
check if you like it. I don't think I'm really
doing it justice, but it's A great read really
some cool ideas very original. I think that's
that's key. And honestly the next book I'm about
to talk about east of west is even more original
Again, it's done by it's done by image and I
gotta say something about images They they are
putting out a lot of great stuff recently. Yes,
they are So they they are really hitting it on
the park I mean they were kind of a company that
was going downhill for a while and but now they're
they're uh, they're kind of coming back on track
and at least Don't call it a comeback. I will
not call it years They have been but uh east
of west is written by jonathan jonathan hickman
drawn by nick i'm gonna butcher this name and
I apologize drugado, but uh, it Am I wrong am
I right? Do you know? No, I have no idea. Okay
But this is a comic book that I will, I'll be
honest, like I had to read the first issue of
it like a couple of times because I'm like, I
don't know if I'm completely getting everything
that's going on. I don't know if you ever read
one of those comics where it's like, that's that's
that low comic that I was reading. Exactly. And
honestly, when you know, you know what I do,
I go to the writer and I ask him about it. Clears
everything up. Yeah, you know what? I should
have done that I should have done that but I
did not the book of it I would kind of I kind
of called it Spaghetti punk instead of steam
punk because it's a combination of like Western
with dystopian future but But within that, it's
a story actually about the end of the world,
because it centers on the four horsemen of the
apocalypse. And the main horseman that it really
focuses on is the horseman of death. He's like
this main character, and he's made out to be
like a Clint Eastwood, the man with no name type
of character, very much designed by that. It's
interesting though, because he's a character
design, he's all white, like his entire body
is just completely white. And it takes place
in this like alternate type of universe where
The Civil War ended differently where the United
States ended up getting separated into different
factions. The San Francisco area ended up actually
being taken over by the Chinese. The Native Americans
took over their own section. So it ended a little
bit differently and it kind of changed everything.
So even though it's in the future, A lot of people
still kind of have the style of like the 1800s.
They dress that way. Like the bars are kind of
like that. So it's a combination of similar to
steampunk where it's like future and past technology
all in one. Same thing with east of west. So
it's a really intriguing universe with a lot
of complex ideas because basically it's just
it's the end of the world to ending. And it's
kind of getting to those events and what's going
to happen. And there's some the character of
death. Is bent on revenge and we don't really
know completely why yet But he's kind of going
around and enacting it on people who done him
wrong basically it's at the heart of it is very
much like a western story of revenge him going
around and Killing all these people and being
the archangel angel of death. Basically you can
do it. So I mean, that's one of my one criticisms
though. It's that That the main character there's
never any threat really because he's a you know,
he's the angel of death He's the earth. He's
the apocalypse Horseman of death and there's
never any threat of him Being harmed by any any
ways or anything like that, but it's not necessarily
about that But it's just one thing there are
some like action sequences where it's just like
well, he's kind of unstoppable So there's no
stakes here, but it builds it into it and it's
going some interesting directions I really at
the end of the day I'm like, I don't know if
I'm completely understanding everything that's
going on. I kind of like the framework. I like
the universe I really enjoy the art. I love the
covers of it because they're very simple They
kind of remind me a little bit of you remember
the civil war covers where? They would have like
civil war the bottom would be all white and the
top would just be the intimate an image It's
kind of like that but it's even simpler like
the first cover is just a guy in shadow with
a gun pointed it's kind of cool little like simplistic
design, but Again, highly recommend it. That
was a lot of fun. Like I don't know if I completely
got everything that was going on I'm like, I
think I understand this but not completely but
Again, you're looking for something new, different,
challenging, pick up east to west. So too high
recommend for me for this week. So it's been
a good week for comics, at least. Very nice.
Chuck, I know you've been reading a comic as
well that I think we touched upon a few weeks
ago. What have you been up to? Well, I mentioned,
I think it might have been last episode. when
we were down to visit for the convention, you
were nice enough to let me borrow the Feared
Self story, the seven -issue main miniseries,
and I think one of the tie -ins too. So I did
get a chance to read those before I jumped on
any of the stuff that I bought at the con, like
you. But yeah, I did get a chance to read the
Feared Self story. I gotta say, I liked it a
good deal, but I do have some issues with it,
which I'll get to a little later, but first I'll
point out that I thought it was very well written
by Matt Fraction, and the art was pretty awesome,
honestly. It was done by Stuart Eminen. Oh, I
love his stuff. Yeah, yeah, pretty cool. He's
the one that makes it worth reading all the Bendis
writing and the X -Men all -new, is that all
of them? Yeah, it's all -new X -Men. Yeah. Like
he, I don't know, he's the guy that I he is the
art that I think of when I think of like the
modern comic book style of art. Mm hmm. You know,
like like Eminem or Steve McNiven, who actually
did some covers on some of these two. But yeah,
really good art. It made it a pleasure to to
kind of read through and look through these books.
The story is a few years old. It's from 2011.
So, yeah, I'm a little bit. behind on everything
pretty much so right there with you i only read
it like a month before you did so yeah so everybody
probably listening is like yeah what the frig
we just read this story like a couple years ago
but um so i i mean i'm not gonna give too much
away about it in case anyone wants to read it
or anything but the basic gist is like there's
an asgardian character named the serpent you
know is that gonna probably relate to the midgard
serpent probably so yeah the they have this ancient
s guardian character named the serpent which
you know if you know about the the s guardian
lore you presume is like the midgard serpent
of their of their tails and everything and uh
he has this great power like odin and he's kind
of tied to this prophecy with thor that's kind
of destined to play out or whatever but uh odin
wants to Kind of forget about earth and prepare
his own people for for what's coming and this
big this big war and everything and of course
Thor has a problem with that and leads to some
father -son issues to say the least and Then
you know Captain America steps in there for a
minute and that part was freaking awesome. I
really liked the idea of Picking out like seven
powerful Marvel characters to kind of be to almost
be like the Heralds of this guy so to speak You
know how Galactus has his heralds like Silver
Surfer and Tear Axe and Fire Lord and all those
guys like this guy kind of has some heralds and
since he's Asgardian of course they all get hammers.
Different type of hammers and with these vast
powers. Would you say that it was hammer time
Chuck? It was it was it was more hammer time
than ever. and what were they were they legit
hammers like like legit hammer is like there
were two legit well you couldn't quit yeah that's
for sure yeah they had more hammers than ace
hardware that's for sure that was a lame ass
joke yeah because the hammer joke was so awesome
thank you thank you or the two legit to quit
that's what we do here Welcome to pun podcast.
Sometimes we hit a home run. Sometimes we strike
out deal with it It's actually a pun cast and
it's a pun cast fun cast. Yeah But yeah, I like
that idea and the characters that they chose
were pretty awesome actually and it was it kind
of reminded me of our discussion last week about
the Underused characters because they brought
some characters in that you really haven't heard
from in a while And, you know, Dan probably remembers
some of them. You're like, oh, yeah, I forgot
about that guy. That's kind of cool that they
included him. Yeah, I won't give him all the
way, but a couple of characters like Juggernaut
and a tumor and great gargoyle absorbing man
and stuff like that. Yeah. So, you know, pretty
cool because. I mean, I haven't heard anything
out of a tumor since like the Atlantis attack
story or whatever, which was like a long time
ago, but. I heard it's not a Tuma though. Yeah,
didn't Arnold say that? Yeah. Oh god. Is it sad
that I thought of that while I was reading it?
Like he he was on the page and I'm like it's
not a Tuma. I think I went for worst joke of
the night. So let's see who can beat it. I would
say that's the best joke of the day. Anytime
you can make a was it a kindergarten cop reference?
Yeah. So. But yeah, that was pretty cool. And
there's some other characters in there too, but
I wish I could kind of read all the little tie
-in stories because the cool thing is at the
end of the issue it tells you It kind of it kind
of goes to excel on you It's like if you want
to follow this guy Pick up this comic and if
you want to follow like what happens with this
guy pick up this comic So my god, that's really
cool, you know, and I wish I could pick up all
those little tie -ins But you know, there's like
hundred of them. So I don't think I'll be able
to I did have a couple of issues with it and
a couple of questions and stuff. And while I
was reading it, I really wanted to see where
Dr. Doom was during all of this. And I'm not
sure what was going on with him at this time.
I don't know if he was dead or alive. What was
he doing, Chuck? Probably polishing his armor,
I would say. I don't know. He was chilling like
a villain. Yes. Yes. That's it. That's an accurate
assumption. Now the lamest joke to me. Thank
you. I see where we're going with this. I have
to step up my game here. I accept that challenge.
Okay. But see, I don't know what was going on
with Doom at this time, but I'm thinking like
he's the one guy that I would think while all
this was going on, he would just not stand for
any of this and he'd be, you know, right in the
middle of everything going on. That's kind of
at least an explanation. I would have liked to
see like, you know, OK, you got teleported to
some weird ass dimension and he's not around.
But I would have liked to seen something out
of him. And I guess another another little issue
I had with it was you see Wolverine and a lot
of the panels because he's on the main Avengers
team. But I think honestly, he gets one line
in the whole seven issue series and. So I would
like to see more out of him and also Juggernaut,
who's one of the one of the heralds, I'll call
him, of this guy. And I know there's like an
uncanny X -Men crossover, which, you know, there's
probably more stuff with Juggernaut and Wolverine
going on in that story, which maybe I'll have
to pick up and read sometime or something. But
I think in the main miniseries, I would like
to see more out of them. And so and there's the
next part I want to talk about. I could give
a little bit of a spoiler alert. If you really
don't want to anything to spoil this story for
you, you can kind of skip ahead a minute. But
there's a really cool part towards the end of
this storyline about Tony Stark making the enchanted
weapons for all the Avengers. Do you remember
that, Dan? Yeah, I do. That that part was freaking
awesome. Like I thought that was like the coolest
idea. Honestly, though, I wish we got to see
more of it. I mean, it seemed like it didn't
really that make make that much of a difference
in the battle. Like they got it for a little
bit and there's a couple pages of the battle
and then it was like over Yeah, yeah, like there
was this huge lead -up to making these weapons
and this was gonna be like the Turning the tide
of the battle It didn't even seem to have that
that big of an impact. So I don't know I think
that's the issue with some of these stories that
with like it ends up just being such a a hauled
-out version of the story because then they have
the other stories that go into more detail and
it's it's hard to get a complete picture of everything
that's going on because so much is the tide like
to get the complete picture you need to read
all the different side side stories so it's like
they see the other angles so like then the main
story gets gutted because it has to yeah keep
certain things out so I think it's I think it's
a product of the big stories which I think is
sometimes why some people have issues with them
because it ends up feeling not complete a lot
of the time yeah that was my my main like point
with with reading this story because it's it's
just like i know like there was a lot of crossover
stuff in the 90s but it seemed like you could
read the main story and still get a really great
grasp on what was happening whereas it seems
like the last couple of of big crossovers in
marvel it's it's more like, you know, you're
missing a lot if you only read the main one.
And you're kind of lost and those gaps need to
be filled in. And it just kind of bummed me out
a little bit because it's like, yeah, I want
to fill in those gaps, but I don't want to buy
all the other trades to, you know, fill in these
gaps. Like, it just it sucks because the story
kind of suffers a little bit because, you know,
you would have to have like a 15 part crossover
or something. Miniseries to explain everything.
Yeah, it's kind of a deadly game to play because
then you run into issues where it's like I don't
want to have to read the side stories But then
if you do have side stories, you also want them
to be relevant, too Yeah, it ends up that's why
I kind of like something like education or songs
a little a little bit better Because it goes
from once like one book to the next and it's
like in a like succession So it's not it's not
happening all at the same time. It's happening
in the books in order So it's a little bit easier
to follow. It's more contained. So I kind of
prefer when they do that so it's not so Much
where it's like all happening at once. So then
it's like everything It's a little it's like
watching trying to watch four movies at the same
time Right that are covering the same story,
but just at different angles. It's hard to really
feel like it's ever connected completely Yeah,
that's a good point because that was only I think
three titles. I think executioner song was And
that seems like a good number because I looked
I started looking into fear itself and there's
like, you know, there's a Deadpool one and there's
like just all these other random ones. There's
got to be like eight or ten of them. And, you
know, certain ones have key pieces to them and
everything. And I know I did read the one you
gave me, which was I think Uncanny X -Force and
the Defenders or something like that. And I did
enjoy the Silver Surfer being in there a little
bit and kind of working with Dr. Strange and
Neymar with the defenders to defeat Atuma and
stuff. That was pretty cool. But yeah, it's just
it's kind of a shame that, like you said, it's
a it's a fine line to walk. And this one, unfortunately,
I don't think they did as well as they could
have because they they could have included some
of the more important things in the actual miniseries.
But. Think overall it was a great story and a
great idea Maybe if I ever get to read the tie
-ins, I'll be a little bit more happy with it
Yeah, when I think the concept itself makes a
lot of sense It's a cool concept and I did like
it a lot Like I said, like I agree with you there
are there's you just kind of want more of it
in some spots Yeah, and even though it was seven
issues, which is a little bit longer than your
standard miniseries. It still seemed really quick
like it was over really quick and I forgot to
mention the one the biggest part that I had a
problem with and I won't give too much away here,
but there's a part where a major character dies
and It doesn't seem like it impacts the other
characters that much at all. They kind of gloss
over it very quickly and It should be this huge
like heavy moment that everyone should be Kind
of disturbed by it and they're not really it's
just kind of like not a big deal for some reason
Well true, yeah, but you know, it doesn't good
do good for the story you're trying to tell right
then and there Did you have you read for yourself
Greg? I've read some of the parts, but I don't
think I've gotten to read the whole thing I think
I've had parts where I've come in and kind of
gone out so Yeah, cool. Yeah, it's I would recommend
I mean, I'll be like you said Chuck It's a three
-year -old story. So a lot of people I've already
read it But you know people like you and me who
have not necessarily kept up to date with everything
It's a it's cool one. And honestly as I've gotten
into more hero clicks One of the favorite thing
is just like it's come up with a lot of cool
characters for that game. So yeah picking up
so All right, Greg. How about yourself? We've
kind of been dominating the here. How's your
week been going? What are you been up to? Stop
with the bondage here, guys. You don't like being
dominated? Come on. Well, I have a couple of
things here that I have read, so I'll just try
and shoot through them really quick. I've read
The Goon, which I have never read before, but
it was recommended to me. And I found book number
three on sale at the Baltimore Comic Con. So
I'm kind of starting in the middle of something,
which would have helped out if I started from
the beginning to kind of get a placement on these
characters since they're so wacky and the land
is just so crazy. But the art is really attractive,
if you ask me, especially the covers, just kind
of like this nice painterly quality to them.
And it really gives a dimension to the image
while still retaining like old comic book animation
type of style. And the inside kind of sticks
with that old school animation style, like Will
Eisner and stuff, which also gets mentioned in
this little introduction by Frank Darabont. And
I thought it was pretty good. It was, it's like
a really crazy combination of, there's a lot
of influence from Will Eisner in this book, the
spirit. It's kind of in that same world as kind
of Frank Darabont says at the beginning in his
introduction. It's the cross between Will Eisner
stuff and like a B rated movie. There's one where
he becomes just monster fight. And it's just
a whole lot of fun. If you ask me, it doesn't
really take itself too seriously at all. It's
just trying to be crazy and fun. So I might try
and go back to the beginning and read the first
issue. One of the highlights of the book was
in one of them, they had a crossover between.
Hellboy in the goon and if you know me hell boy,
I have I I'm a big fan of hell boy So I thought
that was really cool. That's interesting because
I I know like they don't seem like worlds that
would cross over But that's really that's intriguing
I actually made it a pretty cool crossover. It
kind of starts off with Hellboy and Mike Mignola's
animation. And then he kind of gets transported
into the goon's world and has to find his way
back to leave it kind of open so you could read
it, enjoy it. But once they transport into the
goon world, then Eric Powell's illustration style
takes over. So I thought that was kind of neat
and a good use of changing style, because I've
said it before in other podcasts, I don't like
it when the artist gets switched out every two
seconds, it kind of messes up the story. But
for this, I think it was a good thing because
it kind of showed that you're in one world and
now you're in another thing, which is kind of
why I don't like it in regular stories where
they just kind of change an artist to change
an artist. So I recommend that one. Actually,
I'm recommending all the ones that I've read
here. What I recommend today, yeah, the next
one I read was Avengers arena murder worlds were
uh, I read the first two volumes and it's essentially
It's it's essentially hunger games with avengers
characters and and they make fun of that a little
bit But uh, it's definitely a different take
on the hunger games. It's not politically Run,
it's it's more of arcade Becoming godlike in
this with this little island. So it's it's also
a cross of Lord of the Flies Which they also
mention in the book and one of my favorite books
that I was forced to read in High school was
Lord of Flies and it was one of the books that
I actually enjoyed reading So with the cross
with all that stuff, of course, it was going
to be enjoyable for me So this is a newer booker.
I this has started probably a year and a half
ago. I want to say The art is... Nothing special,
it's okay. And the art's by... Let me see here.
I think it changes through different stories.
Yeah, they have different ones, so I'm not gonna
really comment on that too much, but the writer
is Dennis Hopeless, and I think he's done a good
job of making it something different than Hunger
Games. He's also done a good job of bringing
in different characters that we don't know to
kind of mix it up. So there are some people that
were kind of questioning their motives throughout
the whole thing. And he's also brought back characters
that we didn't haven't heard from lately. So
we're also don't know where they're coming from
at this point. So I thought that was a really
good job. It doesn't deal with any of the adults.
It's all of like the Young Avengers. There's
Captain Britain apparently has a school which
I didn't know about and so there's kids from
his academy. Apparently the kids from the X -Men
school did not get included in this. Apparently
the security at the X -Men school is pretty damn
good. Way to go Wolverine. So I'd I'd really
check that out if you like the hunger games you
like comic books I think this would be really
something cool to check out a lot of death too.
It's very very hardcore I was gonna ask it doesn't
actually fall through with the concept of it.
Actually. Oh, yeah people are getting killed
left and right It's it's pretty awesome in that
respect. So I'm guessing it takes place in like
an alternate universe or like a what -if No,
it's not a what -if they're on this island Like
a murder island or murder world as arcade calls
it He's got kids from this dimension. So Wow,
that's very cool. Well, I guess not cool that
kids are dying but It's got x23 it's got metal
who else we got we got reptile who came in through
Through Yeah, and he came in his character came
in through through that cartoon that was on the
the younger Disney Lady Avengers, no, it's oh
wow. Yeah screaming at us right now but they've
they've also got the runaways Nico and What's
his name? I didn't read too much of the the the
runaways but uh there's another dude in there
from the runaways so i i thought it was a really
good story i i'd highly recommend um those i
i have the first two ones called uh killer die
and then the second one is game on and finally
for you i have Something that I'm just gonna
go through really quick because I feel like I'm
trying to make this short. Well, wait a second.
I wanted to say something about murder world.
Okay, go ahead. I'm just kidding. Oh, and by
the way, that show was called superhero squad
before people start yelling. Yes. I was going
to say that, but I was afraid that I would be
wrong and I wasn't paying attention right. Yeah,
Greg, that that murder world phase on the. The
old Marvel Alliance game was like my favorite
level. Do you remember that level? There was
a section where you could play one of the characters
that you go play the pitfall and play as that
character through a pitfall level, which I thought
was interesting. I always thought that Arcade
was kind of a cool character, so I might have
to check that out. Is that one of your favorite
levels because it's also the level you get to
unlock Blade for? Yeah, yeah, I think you get
them out of the out of the claw machine. Don't
you? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah Good times. I wish
I could get blade out of the claw machines around
my area Well, I mean Wesley Snipes is not doing
much else. So We can I saw some vampires over
there if you want to just check that out But
what was last thing you read Greg? Sorry. Sorry
to interrupt you there. No, that's fine Something
that I don't think needs to be pushed too hard
because it's kind of been out for years now is
Why the Last Man. Nice. I've been wanting to
read this. I bought the first volume like three
years ago and have yet to pick it up. So I do
crap like that all the time. The art is kind
of average, if you ask me. Nothing too exciting
about the art. But Brian K. Vaughan is an excellent,
excellent creative author. He also writes Saga.
He is, I believe he's the show runner. I think
that's his title for, um, under the dome. And
I love both of those things. Saga is just fricking
fantastical that world, but why the last man
takes place in a little bit more, uh, realistic
worlds takes place on earth. And there's some
kind of virus or something out there, but there's
some kind of virus that takes out all men except
one man and his pet. male monkey. And so it's
Yorick Brown and his pet monkey, Ampersand, the
only ones left. And so he's kind of out and about
in this world where it's essentially things are
getting taken over by women, because there's
no men left. Essentially, the world we live in
is essentially run by men. And so there's very
little women to take over in certain areas. Even
though women have been taking over in a lot of
positions anymore, you can still tell that there's
a lot of discrepancy and that kind of stuff.
So it does have a big message about women in
the workplace and women's rights, that social
issue. And so it's a story that has an issue,
but it's told really well. And the main character
gets in really interesting situations because
he's trying to cover himself up. He's trying
to go find his mother who is, I believe the Senator
is, she's involved in higher up politics, trying
to find her. And then the mother wants him to
be kept around so he could get. things done so
they could find a cure for it and try and bring
men back through Some kind of cloning of his
DNA so they could get men back into the world,
but he also is Wants to marry his girlfriend
Who is in Australia, but he can't contact her
because a lot of services are down because of
because There's the the workforce is very depleted
at this point men aren't there to fix all the
problems. Is that where Yeah, that's what I'm
trying to say I'm trying not to be a dick about
it. No, I'm obviously joking because I know Fusible
for love of God don't don't Really if people
don't know it we're joking about half this stuff
half the time then it's their own problem If
you ask me, I don't disagree But it's very interesting,
very interesting situations that Brian Kayvon
puts this poor guy into. He's getting chased
down by all sorts of different groups in this.
And it's something that I definitely want to
pick up the next book. And I read through this.
really super quick. So that's how I know I really
like something if I get through it pretty damn
quick, because it's a, I got the thick hardcover
volume of it, which is like triple the size of
the soft cover volume one. And I read through
it in like an hour probably it was like, yeah,
it was really good. Cool. Yeah, I have to pick
that up. I'm well, I'm afraid that I got to read
the one that I bought a long time ago So yeah,
don't pick it up again Volume two when when I
have When I deplete my other comics All I can
say is you definitely can tell that we just got
back from a Baltimore Comic Con or Comic Con
not that long ago, because that we're talking
a lot about comics. So you kind of get in that
mood where it's like, all right, now I got to
read all the stuff I got. So, yeah, I think I'm
going to have plenty to read for the next six
months. Yeah, I think this is our most comic
based episode yet. But a lot of recommendations,
I guess. So that's a good thing. A lot of things
for you guys to go out to read. And I'll hopefully
even read having more comics next week because
I'm going to try to read Hacktivist, which is
a book I picked up at Baltimore Comic -Con, too,
which looks really interesting. But all right,
anything else before we take a break and then
get into our geek power rankings? Yay, break.
My thirsty brain hurts. Lots of talking. Alright,
well we're gonna take a break. We'll be back
in a little bit to count down the biggest and
the best topics in the geek world, so we'll see
ya. It's action. It's drama. It's comedy. It's

and welcome back. Like I mentioned at the top
of the show today. We're trying to construct
geek power rankings And I think this is something
we'll do periodically and we'll kind of go through
it and see what is really Trending and what's
really popular now within the geek culture So
if you if you're all at all NFL fan They would
do a thing called NFL power rankings where they
rank the best teams in the NFL right now So we're
taking that idea and transforming it into geek
culture. So the idea behind this is it's not
necessarily What's popular, you know throughout
generations or years think of something like
Star Wars, right? Because Star Wars is probably
the most popular thing in geek culture ever but
right now it's not made not necessarily as popular
or something else because it's not necessarily
in the Current lexicon or there's nothing new
for it or maybe there is when we'll get into
that So they it's kind of a snapshot into the
world that we live in right here right now and
so what we throwing on different topics and trying
to debate like what is What are the coolest things
in the world of geek them as we go on because
we are geek podcast and that's what we do So
I was thinking probably the make this easiest
for all of us We should probably just start with
what's pretty unanimously without a doubt probably
number one on this power ranking and That way
we can just after that everything is just second
fiddle But I don't know if you agree with that,
but I'm thinking if you ask what is the biggest
thing geek culture right now? What is the biggest
thing like you know going? I would think considering
its box -office dollars considering how its characters
are huger than ever how it's merchandise is selling
how it's comics Oh, it's comics or even selling
through the roof that the biggest thing in geek
culture right now is without a doubt Guardians
of the Galaxy, would you guys agree with that
or I would agree with that? Yeah Mean it just
rocket raccoon has a book out comic book out
now. That's Tons of success after the the film
has a run Yeah, and there's there's like There's
like this app now that you can like text Groot
or something like that So it just puts I am Groot
for everything. Yeah, pretty much pretty sure
I could just command C command V that Yeah, copy
and paste people Just goes to show you like throw
it out there and people it'll eat it up. But
um But yeah, I would say guardians of galaxy.
I mean just recently it became the most uh, the
highest grossing movie of 2014, right? Yeah,
and it's closing in on it's probably gonna make
over 30 million dollars. It's It's yeah, it's
the biggest thing going right now. It's by far
the biggest. It's not the biggest global movie
Currently, uh, that's still transformers. Thanks
china for that. But yeah guardians of galaxy
the biggest domestic hit it's kind of funny though
because It was projected to make a hundred and
fifty million dollars and it's double that which
is insane so much for So much for way off projection
guy He's gone on one of those bud light commercials,
yeah Real men of genius so we have our number
one that's without a doubt I figure we get that
out of the way everything else is sanca fiddle.
So no need no need to debate there. So What we'll
do now is go through some other topics try to
see like, okay would that belong in the top five?
Is that more of a bottom five thing or is that
does not belong in the top ten whatsoever? And
it's it's kind of come and gone So we kind of
started with a movie slash comic book thing.
Are there any other? Topics or anything else
you think okay. This is also really popular.
This also has to be on the geek power rankings
right now Well, I think one that I would put
in there is something that's been in the news
the last few days uh that's Avengers Age of Ultron
uh there's a lot of anticipation for that you
know because it's coming out next May so I don't
know if you guys would agree with that I've debated
about that as well because I try to construct
my own top 10 and when I put this on Twitter
and Facebook and asked what are the biggest things
in geek culture right now this was one of the
responses was Avengers Age of Ultron and I definitely
think it's there to me it's like a debatable
in the in the bottom 10 Bottom five the top ten
so like six through ten I think we can put it
in there for right now and see where we go for
it Because I think it's more of a whisper thing.
Yeah, I think it's gonna obviously explode but
I don't think All over your face neck and chest.
It's a careless whisper. Yeah, I feel like there
are other Properties right now that maybe you're
even exploding or maybe there's certain buzz
around them popular or negative I feel like with
age of Ultron for whatever reason there's not
there's a lot of intrigue there for sure But
I mean listen every single Avenger site I go
on mentions this movie Every time I go to Avengers
age of Ultron comm it's all over But yeah, I
definitely we all see it. I do think it belongs
in the discussion So we'll throw that in the
bottom five for right now and see where we can
go and I guess since we started with age of Ultron
It's probably a good idea to and I'm kind of
lumping this into one character. I'm thinking
well, what's popular right now? And I mean you
could always say Batman like any day of the week,
right? The Batman's always you are you Batman?
I did not know that I am Batman cool Okay. Well,
I think Batman, you belong on this list. Think
about it right now, though. I mean, he's always
popular. He has all his movies. But currently,
Batman versus Superman, someone blinks on the
set, and it's headline news. Every little thing,
the Batmobile images came out. It's news all
the time. For whatever reason, people are just
dying to get news about it. And beyond that,
you also have the Gotham TV show coming up. There
is a Batman video game, but that's not scheduled
till next year. I think, I mean, there's some
buzz on that, but I know with the Gotham TV show,
it's also the 75th year anniversary of Batman,
which there's been a lot about that. There's
been conventions and pretty much - Batman 66,
bitch! At worst! Yeah, see, there you go. And
so I think Batman is always popular, but I do
think he is rather popular right now. Do you
guys, how do you guys feel about that? I concur
fully, Daniel. Yeah, I would agree with that
I I wasn't sure if we were gonna lump the Superman
Batman movie into a separate thing. Are you gonna
are you gonna include in with this? I think it'd
be easier just to say Batman in general in my
opinion just because it's Maybe because it's
kind of all related into this one faction of
a character Per se since it's all Batman related
in some way instead of like, you know with Guardians
of the Galaxy Rocket raccoon has his own comic
book right now Groot has his own app because
I can't that's a thing I guess and Chris pratt
is going to be hosting snl soon So I feel like
it's similar to that where you have all these
different parts of guardians of galaxy But they're
all they're all guardians of the galaxy within
themselves. So So we thinking that would be would
that be more popular right now and geek them
than age of ultron or less popular? Do we think?
I think just the fact that he has so much stuff
going on I think it would have to be more towards
the the top five than than the bottom I think
we've just only really got one thing going on
with Avengers a Age of Ultron because it's just
a movie this has got movie TV show Old TV show.
I think there's just more things going on with
it. So I think it should be top five for right
now Chuck agree disagree Yeah, I guess I would
agree and put it in the top five probably okay,
so we'll throw it there for right now. All right
Chuck I know you had a few topics on your list
So what else did you have or did I did I did
I cheat and take them by putting Batman all in
one? No, no you I mean a little bit but you gave
me a good segue and there's something that actually
kind of ties to the Superman Batman movie and
I think Something you alluded to earlier But
it's something that's kind of having a little
bit of a back -and -forth with the Superman Batman
movie I'm not sure if you guys have heard this
but uh, that would be the Star Wars Episode 7
movie. Oh Yeah, and there was just like yeah,
did you see the video that was released today
of yeah? Yeah, there was like a little bit of
a prank thing done Yeah, they've kind of been
going back and forth on on Twitter and I guess
this goes back A couple of months because I found
this one site. I could put a We could put a link
up on the the geek ass radio page because it
kind of breaks it down all the the back and forth
between Zack Snyder and JJ Abrams and You know
like there was a picture of You know Superman
in it was Henry Cavill in a Jedi robe and it
said hashtag super Jedi and Then there was like
a picture with like Batman and in r2d2 like in
this on the side of a mountain type thing and
There's just some back -and -forth stuff with
like kind of mashing up these two universes There's
like c3po with like a Batman cape on and stuff,
but it's really cool. They're they're going back
and forth It's like there's these two Titans,
but they're both directors are big fans of the
other the others franchises too, but I just think
like Star Wars is Episode seven is one of those
things right now to that, you know somebody farts
on the set and it's like a three -page article
See, I think I'd rather blinking on the set and
be an article than farting. Yeah, well you got
Harrison Ford. So he's got a Duck following him
around on set. Yeah, that is true. I know when
they like they announced just the helmet of the
star troopers star troopers storm troopers and
that was huge. It's like a helmet I'm like man
you anything and it's a huge story so by the
way what does batman r2d2 sound like beep boop
beep beep beep beep beep someone is going for
the the worst joke very nice there was there
was another there was a picture of jj abrams
tweeted it was like Something he wrote on like
a card like a piece of card stock I don't even
remember what he wrote now But like the background
kind of looked like the Death Star background
from like You know a new hope and like people
were like going nuts over like oh my god The
Death Star is gonna be in this and like they're
freaking out So yeah, I would definitely say
that's trending right now I don't know where
you guys would put that but I'd have to put it
in the top five possibly Yeah, I'm leaning towards
top five just because it is Star Wars. It's a
new Star Wars It's it's kind of grabbed the all
the intention and like you said I feel like it
it trickles out news here and there and when
it does it explodes and I think all Everything
I feel like everything we've heard about it so
far everyone the reaction has been mostly in
very positive towards it So I don't know Greg.
What do you think thinking kind of middle of
the road? I don't think it's gonna be up there
with with Batman because all the stuff going
on with him But I think it's just a little bit
above Avengers, Age of Ultron, if you ask me.
OK, we'll throw it there and we'll come back
around and try to get a better number for all
of these. So we're talking a lot about movies
and stuff right now. And so I'm going to maybe
take it in a little bit different direction.
And one that is not comic books, not TVs, but...
more of a tech side of it and you know that's
part of geekdom too is is techness and i don't
techness that's not a word so there you go and
now is one dan is the william shakespeare of
podcasting he just created a bushism people I
just got compared to George Bush and William
Shakespeare at the same time. I don't know if
that's ever happened in human history before.
Now explode. We just yeah, we just killed the
internet. All right, but uh, Technus. Man, that
also sounds like a bad like 1980s movie or something.
Technus. In a world where technology anyways,
but what technology is also huge and phone technology
is always big I mean every we talked about being
an app for Groot and you know what created apps
iPhone and recently iPhone just or Apple released
the new iPhone 6 and that Kind of was rather
popular. I don't know if you guys agree I mean
I'm thinking if it was on it and be bottom bottom
five because I think maybe Apple is not nearly
up to where it's been But and you have people
standing in lies In line for like months before
it was even announced. Do you think? The new
iPhone would all that all belong here I'm not
too up on my tech Side of things at this point,
but I guess I don't know See, I think that reaction
right there kind of indicates probably not because
man I think for it to be I feel like when the
first iPhone came out it was huge and it was
pop and now Like new apple stuff, you know, they
have the new eye wash and it doesn't seem like
Yeah, it's exactly see this is my point exactly.
There's a watch you put around your eye The new
eye patch by apple it's It's like google glass,
but just for one eye But yeah, so like the new
iphone 6 stuff is just not maybe capturing it
and you think maybe a few years ago it would
have but chuck what do you think are you you
think the iphone 6 that's not nearly as Belonging
or do you think maybe still asking the man who
still has a flip phone? I Wouldn't really put
it up that high. I mean, honestly if it if we
do keep it down around 10 Yeah, I'll put it as
a disarmable mention for right now The only reason
I say that too is because Samsung came out with
some stuff like months ago like they already
had a wristwatch type thing that you could make
calls with and everything so it's it's kind of
like oh apple finally caught up to them exactly
exactly like if i know i have a i have a samsung
6 wants to know what you know samsung was like
two years ago feel free to ask me you can tell
you what your new apps are going to be like so
uh but yeah But I mean, it's still rather popular.
It's so big but I do agree that it's it's it'll
be maybe if we need a substitute or something
like that, we'll throw it out there, but I wanted
to try to capture all the different elements.
So Any any other like what else were you thinking
is out there and popular and really kind of taking
over? Well, I want to put something in that uh
say that a lot but all right I do something that
i'm kind of into which I i've just recently gotten
into and I didn't know that it had this much
buzz around it. Ooh, I think I know what you're
talking about. OK, take a guess, Chuck. Do you
want me to take a guess? Yeah, take a guess.
Buzz Aldrin? No. No. Damn wrong. I could be wrong,
but I'm going to guess pop vinyl figures. Very
good, Chuck. Yes, that's actually on my list.
My list, too. I've recently gotten into these.
little vinyl toys that you don't really do much
except just kind of sit on a shelf and they look
freaking awesome. And as my mom says, oh, that's
adorable. But I've started off I got a couple
exclusives at the San Diego Comic -Con I got
the angry stay puff marshmallow man and the exclusive
Stanley Excelsior or not Excelsior the San Diego
Comic -Con shirt Stanley And so I've then at
Baltimore Comic Con, I expanded more and then
I've noticed that the Baltimore Comic Con in
front of the stands with these pop vinyls, there's
just people just standing in the way blocking
the aisle. And it's kind of like, well, this
is what happens with the artists and stuff at
these things. That's what usually blocks up sections.
But here it's. The sections are getting blocked
off because people are just staring at the pop
vinyls. Usually also at like bigger events, it's
they're staring at the shirts and looking up
at the styling online tower of t -shirts. But
at this con, it was everybody was just huddled
up in front of the pop vinyls and they have so
many different. Companies or titles that they're
involved with they have Ghostbusters. They have
a whole bunch of stuff going on with Disney products
coming out They have Marvel characters. They
have DC characters They have video game characters
and plus I tweeted some stuff at them and they
favorited my tweets How awesome is that? I got
they had a little section on their their Twitter
page of to kind of throw out suggestions for
New figures that they could come up with and
I tweeted Hellboy and Saga, the Brian K. Vaughn
series, and they favored that tweet. And then
I wrote, oh, this is so awesome, the first professional
high, where people would see me tweet. favorite
that I've gotten from somebody on Twitter, and
then they favorited that tweet as well. In my
head, I'm like, how far can I take this? But
then I decided that I should probably just stop
it right there. You get that Peter Griffin look
on your face. You're like, hmm. Yeah. So I'm
going to vote for the Funko Pop Vinyl. I will
it was on my list too. And I think Chuck you
said it was on yours and yeah, definitely third
in there I see I walk around my I work in kind
of a tech company and I see these everywhere
like it they're on a person in my Near me has
one of like some Game of Thrones characters So
it's like if you were into something and you're
geeked into something chances are you have a
pop vinyl of it I don't but I know a lot of people
do and like you said Greg they were huge at the
con. I think they're They sell everywhere. I
mean bookstores have them. They're gigantic.
They're they are like the hot like if you're
going to include toys or Collectibles, I think
they're by far the biggest collectible right
now. Do you agree chuck? Yeah, I would agree
So we think i'm thinking this definitely blings
into the top in top five territory Are we feeling
not strong about it? Yeah, I i'd probably slide
it in there around number four something like
that slide it in there chuck Just just real real
slick. Yeah Lube that up. Chuck, did you have
anything else on your list? I'll go with something
that may not be on yours, because I know we'll
probably have some things in common. But this
would probably be maybe on the lower end for
sure. But maybe I'll lump it together in one
thing, and I'll say Wolverine, which I know is
always kind of overused and worn out and stuff.
But we get this big story coming out, the death
of Wolverine. And I really have started to see
it pop up on a lot of websites that I frequent.
And everybody's talking about this Death of Wolverine
story. And it showed up on Yahoo, so you know
it's a big deal. Was it right next to the Kim
Kardashian story about her getting a new haircut?
Yeah, they have the biggest stories, so that's
the only news source that I go to. They have
the most misleading headlines in the history
of the world. Oh, they do. It's like, you will
not believe this thing that just happened. It's
amazing. It's like, oh, yeah, I believe it. The
president farted today. Oh, really? Yeah, that's
great. Yeah. I mean, we got like Days of Future
Past came out earlier this year and stuff like
that. But I think this Death of Wolverine story
is going to be kind of a big deal here. People
are really starting to talk about it right now
and it's making quite a buzz Yeah, I agree. I
he was actually on my list. I wasn't sure where
he would go But I think that we make a good point
with the death of wolverine. It's gigantic. It's
it's well I don't know how big it is within Like
how many people are super excited for it? But
it's certainly getting a lot of buzz a lot of
people talking about it either because they don't
like it or it's certainly a topic that's Cause
a lot of discussion so there's no doubt about
that So I do agree maybe would be near the like
the bottom of the top ten, you know Like a eight
nine ten, but I agree it belong it probably does
belong on the list Greg what say you? Yeah, I
think that's getting a lot of chatter. I've seen
it on like CNN like normal Sites that you don't
see a lot about comic books and everything and
I've seen a lot of stuff out there on the normie
sites of Non geek related sites aka normie sites
Don't know that would go over well with iTunes
but a few normies That you know what that'll
trick them really no that fool's iTunes really
I think it might not get posted because he said
bad thing is about the iPhone 6 anyway, so now
This this episode is not making it into this
top ten But yeah, yeah, I agree so we'll put
that in the bottom part for right now as we try
to figure this this guy out so I said that that
fucks up with Wolverine. I don't know. We're
gonna put him on top bottom top ten. So you'd
figure him out. Yeah One thing is we're kind
of getting into the fall season and within fall
season What comes will fall TV shows and I'm
surprised Chuck you didn't bring this up I figured
it'd be like the first thing you bring up because
you contractually obligated to talk about it
and that of course is the arrow Yeah I was going
to mention Arrow. I didn't want to prematurely
mention it. I don't want to get too excited.
I feel like it's universally loved within the
geek community. It's so much so that... This
is the first time I've ever seen people get upset
when a show wasn't released on Netflix streaming
when they said it was gonna be on September 14th
it was supposed to come on Netflix and it didn't
and it Caused an outrage and Netflix had to like
release a statement and I've never seen that
done before ever for anything So I think that
definitely tells you that you know arrows. I
mean, it's it's huge right now Fans are standing
out the standing outside the the CEO of Netflix
office. You have failed the city Greg do you
agree? Do you think it's as popular as we think
it is? I'm not sure of its popularity with with
others. I think it's very popular Among us. I'm
not I'm not sure exactly How to read that one
to be quite honest Yeah, I will say I mean it
gets good ratings for cw for sure. Uh, I think
I mean looking at Going through the like the
comic -con I saw a lot of aero cosplay at least
a lot of green aero cosplay more so than ever
before so I mean that is a good that's a good
point greg like is it just that the fan base
is very rapid fan base and it's not that big
or is it that It is really popular. I guess that's
that's that's a good point. It's hard to I I
think it is because just from the stuff I've
seen on like their Facebook sites and you know
the buzz I've heard the comments that I've read
and like it's a lot of people that don't know
anything about comics and it's it's that kind
of 18 to 35 demographic and there's a lot of
people that Like oh what happened in the comics?
I never even read that and like I hear people
talking about it But they love the show like
it's it's you know, really popular with that
age group Yeah, I'm feeling pretty strong about
it. I I think it's you know error I think season
2 kind of brought it into a new light it brought
in bringing in a lot of the you know, the Batman
villains and even to the point where Liam Easton
said he'd even come on to show and do Rouse our
goal. Yeah, and and I think honestly, Liam Neeson
just really wants something to do because he
uh He just recently said that he really wants
to be in star wars episode seven I Think honestly
he just wants something to do that's not too
close to taking I Stopped I want to stop him
taking things Yeah, but I'm thinking this belief
belongs on top five. I don't know We we agreement
on that and Craig. I think do you I know you're
you're a little bit unsure But do you think you
know how we convinced you or are you still on?
on the fence if I'm gonna go I'm gonna go middle
I guess Okay, well throw it there for I'd go
I'd go middle just to satisfy Greg It's probably
not the first time that's been said So I feel
like I saw one from your list it's any any other
topics I feel like I'm kind of throwing them
out there but even anything else we're thinking
of that hasn't been brought up yet I'll throw
out a random one or two. I'm not sure if they'll
stick but they will stick check how about How
about Deadpool Recent addition to my list because
of the news that dropped today that they are
officially planning the Deadpool movie. Yeah
February of 2016 from what I hear. Yeah They
pushed back Fantastic Four and they replaced
it with Deadpool How long can we keep this going
Ryan Reynolds Ryan Reynolds will be Deadpool
it appears And I don't think it's connected to
Wolverine origin. So Morgan Freeman will narrate
Yeah, so I came on to Facebook today after work
and I can't I Opened I opened up Facebook today
and literally like 90 % of my Facebook feed was
Deadpool movie Deadpool movie Deadpool movie
Deadpool movie part of that is the fact that
I'm like I like a lot of movie sites But it's
just that just and then when that test footage
came out again, that was huge So I know I think
Greg you're a huge Deadpool fan. So what are
your what are your? Don't know I've kind of been
running out of steam on him in the comics even
though the comics have been so good But I feel
like he's been so overused lately like he's he's
running into the whole Wolverine thing of Probably
people getting tired of them. So I'm not sure
if I don't know I I still love the character
and I really want I would want to see a Deadpool
movie to be quite honest if if it's done right
kind of like that little tease they gave us So
yeah, I guess it's pretty high up there. I know
like you see cosplay at any comic -con You're
gonna see a trillion dead tools I don't know
if that's just because the costume is kind of
easier to do or whatnot, but it's it's always
a popular character So always look really shitty
like they look really crappily done all the time
like Good job cleaning it up. Yeah, it looks
like they're just wearing like body stocking
with body stocking with patches, it's not well
done. Yeah. Chuck, so what do you think we should
put Deadpool on the list? Because I think he
definitely belongs on the top 10, especially
with the movie announcement. So do you think?
What do you think, somewhere around six, seven,
somewhere middle there? I think, yeah, I think
around that. I mean, maybe higher than Wolverine
because the movie announcement, I think, puts
him a little bit over edge. And I think. Cosplays
wise I think he's a little bit more popular that
end. So yeah, I agree. I think bottom five around
there. So Okay, that's all right Wolverine or
Deadpool likes it on the bottom And you said
you some other topics check I'll throw out one
other one and I think Dan we might have talked
about this one earlier in the week, but uh, I
looked into it a little bit and I think I kind
of Want to bring it up the destiny game that
just came out recently for a lot of different
video game consoles Oh, yeah. Yeah. Good. Good.
Good on you for mentioning that. Good day, Chuck.
Good day. But yeah, they're having like record
sales in this game and it's it's by Bungie Games
who are the same people that came up with Halo
and everything. A lot of inspiration came from
the Halo games and stuff. Hey, Chuck. Yeah. Halo.
Yeah, I mean that's I myself I'm not a gamer
I think I mean Greg you probably play the more
video games world more current video games and
Chuck and I but yeah record sales also went on
to reddit gaming subreddit and Every other post
was about destiny either people talking about
how much they love it or hate it Even on our
off -the -cuff video podcast video game podcast
for geocast radio. There's a lot of discussion
on that board as well about destiny So within
the gaming community right now, that is without
a doubt the biggest, you know thing going so
Have you heard about it at all Greg? Yeah, I've
seen the commercials constantly and Like if I
catch it at the end of the commercial, I think
it's like a recruitment commercial for the army
or the Navy or something, because it's got that
kind of song situation going on. But yeah, I've
heard a lot about it and like people getting
really excited for it. I haven't heard too much
in detail of what the excitement is really all
about, but I just like have heard and felt all
the buzz of what's going on. I've heard the sales
are great, but the reviews are kind of mixed.
Yeah, I feel like that's all games now anyway.
Yeah, that's true. But yeah, I honestly I believe
this like what considering in sales and how much
it's kind of taken over and it's been a Probably
the one of the biggest most popular hits of the
new generation of video games I know it's not
we're not the biggest video games, you know gamers
in the world, but Considering where it is within
geek culture. I think it definitely belongs in
the top five because Considering if you take
how many copies it sold compare it to guardians
of the galaxy money wise I mean, they're not
that far off. I mean, I mean like $60, but I
think it doesn't belong in the top five I mean,
maybe this article I looked at was old but maybe
Dan does this ring a bell? I want to say it's
made over 325 million dollars or something already.
Yeah. Yeah, that's crazy. I guess technically
less people Have played the game then like soul
guardians of the galaxy since a video games like
60 bucks But still I mean that's that's you know,
that's a lot of money for a short period of time
It's only been out for like a week or so. Yeah,
so So are we in agreement putting in in the top
five for right now? Sure. I think we have about
No, we have one two three four right now we have
four in the top five I think we we've got to
be close to heaven ten by now We have one two,
three, four, five, six, seven, eight. Welcome
to counting podcast. We have nine. Yeah, I did
have a couple though. Maybe. We can just get
a quick yes or no, I won't put much. Oh damn,
we're done, we got ten. We're actually only at
nine, so we do need some more, but I figure there's
some that we at least need to mention so people
don't. Some of these a little bit different.
And I thought about, you know, what's really
popular within geek culture? Girls, right? I
mean, there's always girls that geeks are foodies
Who I guess if you get things called girls, even
though I just checked Emily Radajkowski's Twitter
page If you were gonna say who is the it girl
within geek culture right now I know it's kind
of a hard thing to say like the most popular
girl within maybe not even just key culture but
overall actress Does anyone come to mind? i mean
i understand for you greg i mean overall overall
for people just thinking movie career and whatnot
emily yeah i guess i'll just i'll just say it
and yeah i have no idea jennifer laurence jennifer
laurence is where i was going going for i'm smart
She's Mystique in the X -Men movies. She is,
you know, in the Hunger Games movies, which are
huge. I mean, they've been the biggest movies
of the years when they've come out. She's hugely
popular. Oscar winner. I think, and obviously
she had that fappening not too long ago, which
was such a big deal that it ended the ice bucket
challenge. I think I saw me. I think I saw a
meme that said like Jennifer Lauren should be
happy that her boobs ended the ice bucket challenge
which it Reignited a second ice bucket challenge.
They poured all the ice on to everybody's crotches
Not to make light of the situation but that those
were jokes that definitely happened, but I do
think you know Considering geek culture. There's
always that it girl and then I know there's a
lot of them like you mentioned You know Emily
Clark and Emma Raditz Joukowski and whatnot,
but Overall though, I think considering the character
she's playing Jennifer Lawrence is pretty is
pretty Big in the world of geek them. Do we do
we agree disagree? Yeah, especially with the
Hunger Games She's very popular with young ladies
and older men Especially me when my eyes are
closed at night. I'm trying to fall asleep. So
yeah, I think she's should uh enter the top five
as i'm thinking i'm thinking more so middle maybe
i don't know i i but i think she belongs belongs
there what do you what about you chuck um yeah
i would probably include her in the list somewhere
i would say i guess maybe bottom half only because
the movies have all right you know what she's
got a pretty good top half to there chuck I don't
have an opinion you guys settle this Only because
the movies have been out for a while, I guess,
you know, hunger games and x -men both came out
a while ago So it's maybe we has given a little
bit you do have the new hunger games coming out
this november But I guess that's still november.
So but I agree maybe not this is happening Yeah,
but I think that's legitimate. So maybe bottom
middle So we'll throw that right there. So just
some quick ones either we can say yes or no don't
go much detail About these and then we can try
to knock out this ranking of these. I know I
said aero with fall tv I don't know if this is
popular right now since it's not currently airing
unlike I think it doesn't But uh, I think this
is maybe more generally popular than maybe popular
within the geek culture. But what about walking
dead? Think that's always popular at this point.
Um, yeah new season coming up or they just starting
in october I believe is when they start Yeah,
I think maybe when we get a little bit closer.
I think there's gonna be a little bit more hype
for it But yeah, so i'm gonna i'm gonna go kind
of a no for right this moment. Yeah, I agree.
What about you chuck? I would say no until it
starts maybe yeah, you know what i'm sure Once
the premiere hits, it's going to be probably
number one. But yeah, if we do this in like,
you know, a few months again, it'll be it'll
be definitely on the list. But unlike Arrow,
which I think is having a lot of people, it's
still within, you know, because all the different
rumors of different characters with Walking Dead,
I think maybe since it's kind of been established,
it doesn't. Yeah, and they're they're keeping
things a little bit under wraps more, you know.
arrows trying to promote more and they're they're
oh this character's gonna be this character's
me and Walking dead's sort of keeping a lid on
things. You know, they're not revealing too much.
Yeah Another huge thing in geek culture. I this
new series is currently going on right now And
I know greg you're the only one within us that
watches this show but a doctor who? Did just
bring you have a new doctor? I'd say yes, because
there's legitimately a lot of talk on Twitter
and stuff. I did not see it. I don't know when
the frigate airs since I've already missed the
first episode. I'm just not caught up, but that's
all the ladies talk about. The very few ladies
that I talk to um I've I've always hear talk
about doctor who constantly with geek friends
So yeah, I mean the whovians are a pretty huge
fan base So I know chuck you're you're you're
probably less into it than I only reason I know
anything about it is because I watched it for
the homework episode But I would say because
it I mean like I agree. There's a lot of chatter
there Maybe you can throw it in the bottom five
see if it fits at the end. But uh, I don't know
like I feel like though like maybe I'm just blessed
out of it than I normally am but the new doctor
I don't think for whatever reason when I heard
a lot more about it when Matt Smith was a doctor
than a new guy I don't know if that's just I
think he needs some some time to Pull on people's
heartstrings. I think after a while he'll he'll
get a little bit farther up. Okay another person
real quick He one of the most popular podcasts
going he's like a hero to a lot of podcasters
and he damn And he's also uh, we all know who
you're gonna say dan a host of at midnight and
that's chris hardwick Would we put him in the
top ten at all? Uh, he's in a lot of shit. So
I I would say yes I wouldn't say that he's up
that high. I'd say uh bottom ten But uh, he's
freaking he's got his fingers in everything geek
I know chuck you're probably not a biggest fan
as him as maybe I am or other people. But do
you how do you feel? I I would say no, okay I
probably wouldn't put them in the in the top
10 personally, but All right. Well, we'll we'll
throw them like in the like the substitute section
for right now because I was debating too I'm
not sure I put them like with above iphone 6,
but I don't I don't know but I just thought I
would have to throw them out there and think
even there's anything else that we didn't go
over before we Nail it down. But no, I think
we got it pretty well sorted. We oh I know this
is probably a no but they did announce surge
was coming back and it's already sold out that
like energy drink from like the 90s I Don't know
like just for a random thing that they're out
there. Oh, yeah. I know if you remember surge
No, I don't remember that It was like Red Bull
before Red Bull, but I saw a post on Reddit.
And the next thing I know, it's like it's already
sold out everything that was going to come back.
But the fact that we don't even know what it
is tells me it doesn't belong on the list. Yeah,
I didn't even hear about it. Yeah. All right.
So we have our number one, Guardians of the Galaxy.
So the question becomes, what's number two? And
the ones we selected for the top five that are
with unanimous top fives were Batman pop vinyl
in the in the video game destiny. So what do
we think we should go as number two? I'm leaning
towards Batman just because of everything that's
going on right now. What do you guys there's
I think just the mass amount of stuff that he
has his fingers in I'm gonna keep using that
phrase for some reason. I don't know why But
I just think the amount of things out with him.
I think he deserves a second spot there What
do you think, Chuck? Yeah, I'd probably throw
him in right there around number two. OK. So
what comes next, then? We have Pop, Vinyl, and
Destiny. This one's kind of tough. I'm not sure.
Greg, you're the big Pop, Vinyl fan, probably.
You have the most. Do you think its popularity
is overshadowing the video game? Maybe the video
game's hot right now, but. Well, I think. I don't
know, because I'm so new to this vinyl situation,
vinyl toys. I know there's a lot of people out
there just from watching TV that collect vinyl
figures. I'm not sure if they all collect pop
vinyl or not. But I just think that there's,
for more sheer amount of people... Interested
in video games that I would put destiny ahead
of pop vinyl Even though I have really no interest
in that video game to be quite honest. What do
you think Chuck? Oh boy, I think well, here's
what I think I think destiny is hotter right
now Yeah, but I think it's more of a firecracker.
I think the pop vinyl is is gonna be a longer
lasting effect I guess I'd throw a pop vinyl
ahead of destiny Yeah, I'm considering the list
is what's right now. I think I agree with you
and actually your argument for Pop Vinyl is my
argument for why Destiny would be bigger. Yeah,
I guess. I kind of outsmarted myself there. Yeah.
So I agree. Yeah. Well, so Destiny is number
three, Pop Vinyl is number four. Then the question
becomes, all right, so we got our middle section
right here. And the ones we selected for the
middle were Arrow, Star Wars Episode 7, and Jennifer
Lawrence. So a random combination there. I don't
even know where to begin. I personally thought
Arrow belonged in the top five, so that's where
I'm leaning. Chuck, what do you think? I'm gonna
go with a surprise move, and I would put Star
Wars just one slot ahead of Arrow, probably.
I would, too, to be quite honest. So what were
you thinking? Star Wars Episode VII, Arrow, and
then Jennifer Lawrence? Yeah. Yeah, probably.
No explanation behind that at all. We just think
that's Well, I mean you think about exciting
to listen to I Think we explained a good amount
of what we thought about Star Wars. It's it's
gigantic. It's a movie compared to a TV show,
but even though TV shows have been have been
Showing themselves is more interesting and everything.
I still think movies are My mind or a bigger
thing than TV shows and you get more buzz about
movies than you do really about TV shows And
Star Wars also has TV shows coming out. They
have that new cartoon coming out as well. So
and I think Part of it is the fact that Star
Wars has an established fan base and this this
new movie has it kind of a little bit ahead of
it like Like I said arrows not currently airing.
It's just basically the buzz around it, too So
since you're comparing just one buzz to the next
buzz, I think definitely you would probably say
Episode seven is a little bit ahead of that so
then more universal because I think they're like
myself and you Greg We haven't even saw it the
second season of arrow. So snoop. So fucking
Netflix. I Know stupid get it on there already.
We're up to number seven So we have three more
spots left and we have a couple things on here
already So we we have currently left that we
said belongs in the top ten age of Ultron Deadpool
Wolverine and Doctor Who So we We have four but
three spots So the question is out of all those
out of all those four, which one would we take
out? I'm I'm thinking either Wolverine I'm not
yeah, but I'd like to push Jennifer Lawrence
off the list to be quite honest We even completely
off the list. Yeah So Jennifer, what do you agree
with that? She doesn't have really anything going
on and I I think these The stuff that we have
left. There's more buzz about that kind of stuff
than there is about Jennifer Lawrence this two
seconds She's not really having movie coming
out or anything It's their biggest thing that
she's had out recently is the fappening to be
quite honest true Chuck, what do you think? Yeah,
I probably agree with that until Yeah, I think
I think then she would definitely you could make
a case for her. But yeah, so i'm thinking then
for number seven Considering buzz and whatnot.
Would we put age of ultron? I'd go with that.
Yeah Yeah, that sounds pretty good Because i'm
I mean i'm doctor who has a fan base but I think
avengers fan base is probably a little larger
than doctor who but I think age of ultron number
seven and doctor who number eight Mean, I know
Chuck. Yeah, I haven't I haven't seen any doctor
who news on any of the sites that I've been going
on I guess it depends because it's it's a different
I Don't think you run the same circles as a lot
of the Whovians though Chuck. Yeah, I know but
we're talking about a general audience a general
geek audience and I mean I go to a lot of the
general geek sites and You know at some of the
big ticket things that come up in headlines are
some of the things that we're talking about Yeah,
I haven't really seen much dr. Who stuff. It's
a good point. I mean, it's certainly a niche
audience So I mean that's good if we're thinking
general geek dumb girls. You're all niches now
Then we have Deadpool and Wolverine and With
the movie coming out and I think currently like
the more popular character just in general I
would probably thinking Deadpool but with the
death Wolverine that's making national news So
maybe it should should be Wolverine. So that
I don't know. There's there's two different things
there What do we I don't know we think in Deadpool
we think in Wolverine which one goes where? What
do we what number we own we have eight nine and
ten So we have three spots and we have Doctor
Who Deadpool and Wolverine left. So we got a
we have The number of spots, they all are going
to make it. We just have to figure out which
one would. I'd be OK. I'd be OK with going for
eight, nine, and 10. I'd be OK with saying like
Deadpool. Actually, maybe Wolverine, Deadpool,
Doctor Who. What do you think, Greg? I think
Wolverine, Deadpool, Doctor Who. And I agree.
Only because the Wolverine, like you said, made
some things like CNN and Yahoo and stuff like
that. But yeah. Otherwise, I would probably have
Wolverine at 10, but because of those things,
I move on. Yeah. So to count it down, at number
10, we have Doctor Who, and number 9, Deadpool,
8, Wolverine, 7, Age of Ultron, 6, Arrow, 5,
Star Wars Episode VII, 4, vinyl, 3, Destiny,
2, Batman, and 1, Guardians of the Galaxy. Excellent.
Very very good list actually comic book heavy,
but I think it's it's it's a I mean, it's a very
comic book world. We live in right now superheroes
We do have toys in there. We do have Star Wars.
So but I think it's legit I think it's a I think
legit to quit. Hey, hey Yeah, if this this list
would be selected for hammer time, I believe
So if you disagree or agree with us, feel free
to yell scream and you know Let us know we'll
get at the end of it in the messages Well, no,
we'll get we'll get to how to comment and interact
with us at the end of the show But before we
go we have another episode of that Infamous world
famous the biggest thing going right now Maybe
we should have put this on the top ten, which
I don't know why we didn't even think about that
but We bring you episode 9 of Unknown, A2 Boutai.
King Arthur, the King of Camelot? That's a legend.
And besides, if it was real, it took place hundreds
of years ago. How would he still be alive? Or
is he a descendant? Or is this all just some
kind of coincidence? No, no, my boy. It isn't
just a coincidence. Nor am I merely a descendant.
I am the man himself. As for my age, that's...
is thanks to the Master. So many questions crowd
into my mind at once. It overwhelms me. Which
do I ask first? So I repeat the one that was
only half answered. How could this Master keep
you alive for so long? He has power. Power to
undo my rule. Power that goes beyond the thoughts
of what even a modern man could imagine. I...
am the Master, and Arty, I see you have gone
well beyond the restraints of your curse." A
miracle of modern medicine, I'm afraid. The Master
steps out of the dark and into the light. Not
only did he step out of the light, it looked
like he also stepped out of Arthur's time. So
did his wardrobe, for it was armor of a knight,
but it was rusted down to a rough yellow -orange
sandpaper. Not only was it quality akin to a
horror story, but it was a horror show of a design
as well. Horns and spikes sticking out in all
directions. A mess that would make a cactus jealous.
Unlike his suit of armor, his face was undisturnable.
Only eyes of burning coal showed from under his
helmet. Well, I shall have to remedy that. Don,
et tu, Brute? I was just keeping tabs on Artie,
you see. I was going to report his deception
right after this. Oh, I'm quite sure, Don. And
who do we have here? Me? I know who you are,
well, as much as anyone can. I was being rhetorical.
Well, then, to be fair, you should tell me who
you are. I think it should be quite apparent
at this point. Besides, at this point, it has
become moot. My sword appears to come alive,
like it has a mind of its own. Arthur tries to
hold onto it the best he can, but it's beyond
his strength. He loses his grip, and the sword
flips around to confront the former old man.
Without hesitation, the sword plunges through
his gut. A scream calls out, and it's mine. No!
I'm late and I know it, but I still try to grab
onto the hilt, another failed attempt to save
a life. As soon as my skin touches the hilt,
another light emanates from my skin and the dying
King Arthur. A chorus of voices sings out in
my head. One annoying voice rings out louder
than the rest. Take me with you, grab hold! For
better or worse, I'd do as I'm told. Grabbing
hold of the thick, greasy hair of the disembodied
head, the late becomes enough to blind a man.
No! You tricked me! You will not escape my grasp.
I felt it deep within. Lord Wilt spoke a lie.
For we were already a long distance away. The
surroundings became a pure white, and then slipped
to black. Wake up! Wake up, unknown! We are here.
