About this Episode

Dan, Greg, and Chuck dive into Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, discussing the film's vibrant visual style, character performances, and how it compares to the comics. They break down each guardian—from Groot's charm to Drax's literal humor—and explore the film's use of music as integral storytelling. The hosts also clarify the infinity stones/gems and their place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's larger cosmic arc, correcting misconceptions circulating online.

Hi, this is Kyle Higgins and you're listening

to the Geek Catch Radio Network. We have to stop

Ronan. How? I have a plan. You've got a plan?

Yes. First of all, you're copying me from when

I said I had a plan. Well, I'm not. People say

that all the time. It's not that unique of a

thing to say. Secondly, I don't even believe

you have a plan. I have! part of a plan. What

percentage of a plan do you have? You don't get

to ask questions after the nonsense you pulled

on Nowhere. I just saved Quill. We've already

established that you destroying the ship that

I'm on is not saving me. When did we establish

that? Like three seconds ago! I wasn't listening.

I was thinking of something else. She's right.

You don't get an opinion. What percentage? I

don't know. Twelve percent. Twelve percent? That's

a fake laugh. It's real! Totally fake. That is

the most real... authentic, hysterical laugh

of my entire life because that is not a plan.

It's barely a concept. You're taking their side?

I am Groot. So what? It's better than 11%. What

the hell does that have to do with anything?

Thank you, Groot. Thank you. See? Groot's the

only one of you who has a clue. You are now on

the inside of what I like to call the circle

of trust. We are all connected in a great circle

of life. You know something Bert? What? I think

you and I are going in circles. It feels like

we're going in circles. The circle is now complete.

When I left you, I was but the third. Now I am

the last. Hi, this is Greg. This is Chuck. And

this is Dan, and we are Talking in Circles brought

to you by the Geekcast Radio Network, the podcast

where we are Groot. This week we'll be talking

about, of course, the infamous very worldwide

phenomenon, Guardians of the Galaxy. What? Yeah,

that movie. What movie? The Guardians of the

Galaxy. Who's Guardians of the Galaxy? The one

with the raccoon and the tree. That one looks

stupid. It's Ranger Rick, right? Yeah. Exactly.

It is Ranger Rick and... The Giving Tree. Yeah.

The next... Ah, okay. Yes, we'll be getting into

guardians the galaxy in the second half of the

podcast we've been talking about that for a while

now if you're like You know when we first started

we were getting into the trailer and finally

it's out So looking forward to hearing what you

guys have to say about that But before we get

to all that how's the week been going for you

guys? Not too bad. I had a interesting little

trip for kind of a vacation from work went to

Dorney Park in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Nice,

nice. I've not been there. They still have steel

force. Is that still a thing? Yes, yes. And the

water park or whatever? Yeah, yeah. It's basically

like two parks in one. It's like the water park

and then the amusement park with the roller coasters

and stuff. That was my first time going there,

honestly. Oh, really? Yeah. So that's that's

kind of weird. But I'm not like a huge amusement

park person, but. I ended up getting the tickets

for my girlfriend for her birthday, and they

were good for any day in the summer. So we finally

got around to going, you know, this week. And

I got to say it was a lot of fun. We did like,

I think, seven or eight big time rides, like

all the roller coasters and the demon drop and

the big drop. Was it into a bucket? That would

that would be a more apt description. And then

there was this big tower called the Dominator.

It's like, I don't even know, 150 feet tall or

something. And you go up and it's just a free

fall straight down. And that I did do a demon

drop on that one. That was pretty scary. A demon

drop, yeah. Yeah, there's some really cool roller

coasters there. They have one called Thunderhawk,

which is a wooden roller coaster. I love the

wooden roller coasters. That's still around,

wow. That thing is so bumpy and rickety. Like,

holy crap. That's the best part of those. And

you get slammed off shit. You're black and blue

afterwards. I know. It looks like I got in a

fight, like, afterwards. It's what hockey players

use to, you know, for the off season. They get

used to it. It's just... That's what Happy Hillmore

uses to train for hockey season. No one taught

the one rule of that wooden roller coasters is

you don't talk about wooden roller coasters.

Nice I feel like those are just just blatant

safety regulations. There's like none of them.

It's like it's wooden. You'll be fine It's soft

it's not like metal or anything What's pliable

somewhat, you know, you'd be fine We sat in the

first seat we went on that one twice first time

we sat in the very first car That was pretty

sweet actually and then the second time we sat

in the very last car and that was bumpy as hell

I think I might have cracked a vertebrae on that

one, I don't know. As you were riding the wooden

roller coaster, did you hear faintly, oh, I am

Groot. Oh. Get off me, please, with the love

of God. Yeah, I replied with, we're only 12 %

through the ride. Wow, that's barely even a concept.

That's barely even a Joss Whedon line. I did

hear there's a little kid behind us. There's

a bunch of camps there because it was during

the week, which is sweet, by the way, because

the lines are super short and we got we just

got right in on every ride. So it was awesome.

But there's this little kid behind us with one

of the camp counselors and we're going on the

wooden roller coaster. And the first time around

and. There was like this, you know various clicking

noises and whatever you hear while you're on

it and this kid kept saying he's like Why does

he keep making that noise? He's like freaking

out And the guy didn't even answer I mean just

like they just kept going but Yeah, I went on

one like I went on one called hydra, which they

must have built after they took over shield That

one was crazy there's a lot of twists and turns

on that one That was pretty crazy flipping upside

down and everything. But is that the green one?

I think yeah Yeah, that one's a pretty old one

too. That one's like really quick though, isn't

it? It's like a really short Yeah, yeah, it's

I mean, it's not like a big drop or anything,

but it's a lot of like corkscrews and flipping

upside down It's pretty crazy, but Just like

my sex life Very, very twisty Kirk's corkscrews

around and doesn't last very well. No, my mind

would be more like the wooden one, very rickety

and bumpy. And why does it keep making that noise?

And somebody always ends up hurt afterwards.

This is not a demon drop, because I'd be weird.

Yeah, you want to you don't want to stay away

from that one. Yeah, I would definitely recommend.

If you go there, one of the coolest ones, too,

it's called possessed and. Well, they're really

into this whole scene angle. Demon drop possessed.

Yeah, yeah, it's a little weird, you know, but

it's it's meant to be terrifying and some of

them are so. But I would definitely Google, you

know, Dorney Park possessed and check out that

ride. Just there's some people with some GoPro

shots of like going on the ride. That thing's

pretty crazy. Super, super fast. But so, yeah,

that was a. That was my week. That was a fun

time very nice greg. How's your week been going?

Have you been doing any demon drops, you know

Maybe that's why that was white last week I've

seriously been up to pretty much nothing. Uh,

I started to try and go back to uh exercising

and uh And dieting I guess there's that I know

right? I was starting to get a little chubbo

there and I don't like it when I get too big

I feel like I I just don't feel right in my body

if I'm getting on the bigger side it if I'm like

looking out the side I open my door to back up

into the my spot in the driveway so I'm not in

the neighbor's yard and if I'm doing that and

I'm breathing heavily I know I'm getting too

fat so that's one of the warning signs but uh

the one day I was out for a walk and I had my

dog uh raising with me and out walking the dog

and she stops a lot but uh one time she stopped

because she had to poop uh so I let her like

do her business and I didn't realize she was

pooping I thought she was peeing as soon as she

walked away from the spot she was at uh I looked

down saw the poop I'm like, okay, I have to pick

that up. And I look up and there's this cop standing

across the street, hands on hips, just staring

at me, watching me, waiting to see if I would

pick up the poop or not. And like, I looked up

at him and I saw him, so you think he would have

just walked away. No, he watched me go through

the whole process of picking up dog shit. Maybe

he really turns him on. Maybe that's a thing

for him. I guess so. Like yeah pick it up slowly.

Yeah, he ran away giggling saying he called the

ship It's really weird it's like oh there's a

dog let me see if it wow that's a really weird

fetish for some please Making the streets the

streets safer of true for 20 hours a day That's

really funny. Yeah, I think you would be out

doing something more important than watching

me pick up You got to get your jolly somewhere

apparently Interesting. Well, you do have some

news, right? You have joined the wonderful world

of Twitter. I did join a Twitter I haven't really

done too much with the yet. I've thrown out a

couple tweets I haven't putting any pictures

up or anything So my little corner of Twitter

has is not very pretty at this point, but I'm

gonna have to work on that I've been mostly using

it to kind of get motivated to do things and

maybe if I get more supporters down the line,

maybe I'll get more people like yelling encouragement

at me. Do this work. We want another episode

of unknown. You heard him. So you're going to

regret that eventually. Like that was a bad idea.

Actually, they should yell at me to try and complete

a novel. That's what they should be yelling at

me to do, because that's what I would really

like to get done. Very nice. Yeah, what's your

Twitter name again? I keep forgetting in the

create Forge Yes, I'm hanging out at the create

Forge Getting shit done pull in creative things

out of the fire. So I'm at the create Forge It's

okay. My wife's been on Twitter for like three

years and you've doubled the amount of tweets

that she's given. So I Think I'm following her

on Twitter as well. Yeah She's like a ghostful

person on Twitter. She just like reads it, but

she doesn't ever comment. So Well, I've followed

a couple people. I think I'm up to like 70 already

I don't know how I got up to that number so quick.

It builds up quickly. It's like you should follow

this person like, okay, but the thing the thing

I find a The first thing I found out is that

freaking will Wheaton tweets every two goddamn

seconds Will Wheaton tweets every two freaking

seconds, Will Wheaton tweets. And then I have

also found out that I forgot where I was going

with this statement. Like I follow all these

70 people, but a majority of the tweets that

I see are from other people that I do not follow.

Like a majority of the tweets are people that

I have no idea who they are. But Twitter has

apparently decided I get to read theirs instead

of the people that I actually hit follow on.

So I barely ever see them except for Will Wheaton.

Yeah, I was going to say it probably replaces

the people that you actually want to read their

stuff. Yeah, pretty much. Well, the beauty of

Twitter, I guess. I bet you I bet you, though,

Greg, you don't you said you don't have many

followers yet, but but that cop's following you.

Seen if you make any dog poop tweets, you know,

he said dog poop at dog poop cop dog. Oh, wow.

It's the simple things in life, really, that

make them make it better. I gotta get myself

on that there tweeter and put out some twits.

Yeah, it's a good time. It takes a little bit.

I mean, now that I know more people on Twitter,

it's a little bit better. But having you guys

on it will be fun. And next stop would be getting

on Letterbox. I know I've been ragging on you

guys getting on that. Whoa, wait a minute. You're

blowing my mind with all these concepts here.

I'm just a redneck from a small town. I don't

comprehend this stuff. I understand that. I get

that. But little box is good because it's not

there's social aspect to it, too. But it's more

just fun. I use it more so just to keep track

of what I've been watching. Socialism. Yeah,

I have any of that, Dan. We can't have any socialism.

That's socialism. Yeah. All these socialism networks.

They're changed. America was against socialism,

but here we are. Yeah, there's a lot of those

people out there that Mark Zuckerberg. I'll do

it. But I'm right there with you, Greg. My week

has been very uneventful. I've been working just

pretty much nonstop. So that's been a lot of

fun. I did get it. I'm a little bit happy, though,

because the New York Giants season has started

underway. The NFL is back. Nice, nice. So I watched

a little bit of the first Hall of Fame game.

And one of your players retired already. Yeah,

I know. That's such a sad thing for David Wilson,

for those who don't know. It's only his third

year, and he actually had a pretty promising

career, but he had a neck injury. So he had to

retire. And it's sad. That was kind of depressing.

So bring it down on a few notes. But yeah, Eli

Manning looked like he was as awful as he was

last year. So that's optimistic. But the important

thing is that football is back. Yeah, yeah, and

then right now the Ravens games going on which

is great because I get to experience traffic

on my way home from work. So Stupid rare ice

Which I just meant because he's a raven not because

of all the other stuff, but I guess that works

too, but But besides all the craziness and dog

poop and you know, I feel like a good 80 % of

our Episodes have some sort of poo related News

story somehow it always fits in there some way

No, it's really all of us actually I'm the one

that started at this episode. You kind of finished

it, but we'll keep it going. That's how we roll

but Greg have you been up to anything else? I

know you've been trying to write a lot, but have

you been inspired through any reading watching

listening anything like I've recently stopped

off at the comic book store. And besides the

usual stuff that I pick up. Oh, by the way, I

hope our comic distributor, the owner of Comics

on the Green feels better. He just got out of

the hospital not too long ago. So I hope Dave

feels a lot better. I'm not sure if he actually

listens to this or not, but I hope you feel better,

Dave. but I picked up some comic books and I

was looking for something new to get in on. I'm

like the first issue of something because I really

love fables but I missed the start of that and

I would have loved to have gotten that in comic

book form but right now I'm just going through

in graphic novels since I didn't start off the

beginning. So I did find One comic book on the

shelf that looked looked pretty interesting and

and as you know, you should judge a book by its

cover And this one I think a comic book though

you you have a little bit more leeway Yeah, so

this one that I picked up is called low and it's

by image comics the author is a reminder and

The artist is Tochini. I know Rick, it's Rick

Remender. Rick is his first name. But I went

with the last names because I don't remember

Tochini's first name. And I already bagged it

up and I already taped the bag shut so I don't

want to open it. But I just love the cover artwork.

And the thing that really gets to me about it

is just the colors that were used. It's got these

lovely reds and the kind of burnt red and a little

bit of orange and then down the bottom it kind

of flows into dark but then it's got some greens

and maybe a little bit of blues coming in and

it's just this Weird like imaginative looking

color or cover that looks like it's it's from

a dream So I just had to pick this one up and

plus I love the simplicity of the title artwork

of how they the font that they used for low very

simple simple and That's the kind of designs

that I'm into is very simplistic minimalistic

stuff in it I really didn't see many ads in the

books. I was a very big fan of that. But the

artwork is just superb through and through. The

colors that are used are just really add a lot

to this comic for me. Usually like color isn't

too, too important. It's there. It's very helpful.

discerning information, but I just think that

the color helps the artwork really pop and Tauchini

does a really good job with the illustrations.

I feel like his work looks very fluid and it

looks like it's got a lot of great motion to

his line. It flows very well. It kind of gets

difficult. to try and figure out what's going

on. I actually read this comic twice. I'm not

sure if it's really Remender's fault or Tohachini's,

but the story was kind of hard to follow. It's

a big story that's kind of built up, but you're

dealing with one family, so you're dealing with

this small little aspect of this huge world that

you feel like's there. and you feel like the

family's very close and you get to know this

family very well, but you're just kind of clueless

what's going on in the actual world. So you're

kind of lost and confused the whole time. It's

like somebody that lived in a village and didn't

really know. the world and just lived in that

village his entire life and then gets plopped

into the middle of new york city kind of like

what the hell's going on it's kind of a bit of

an overload so so is it like present day or is

it just like in the past this is like this this

takes place in the sorry i didn't explain any

of the the background behind it, but from what

I got, it takes place in the future and the earth

is going to die. The sun is going to expand like

it's predicted to do. And apparently pretty much

everybody's kind of pessimistic except the wife

in this family. She's very much an optimist and

she's kind of dealing with trying to find a new

location. For earth to kind of the inhabitants

of earth to move to and the husband And everybody

else is kind of pessimistic. It sounds like those

actually very much like the plot for interstellar.

That's coming out later this year Well, I don't

know what interstellar is about but uh But apparently

it's like close to this. Uh, yeah. Well, it's

like the same thing where it's like earth is

becoming an unhabitable So they're trying to

find like a second location to move to yeah There's

also that movie sunshine to with Danny Boyle.

That's actually has Captain America in it where

they're trying to like restart the Sun because

it shut down So they're you know with like computer

problems. He just restarted and everything fixed

It's pretty much the science behind that too

Well, this one kind of continues on where the

the husband is involved in this thing called

the hunt and He's trying to convince their two

daughters to be part of the hunt and the mother

is trying to be a little bit more optimistic

and have them The one girls she told why don't

you want to tend to your garden? But both the

girls want to go off with their father Uh to

do the the hunt and um, their son is actually

kind of sided with the mother kind of So is it

like a situation where it's like in the future

but a lot of like the traditions and a lot of

like it's a lot of Uh, like almost like steampunkish

in a way where their behavior is very much like

from The past with stuff like the hunt is that

is that kind of no? Because the we we don't we

don't really find out in this first issue what

the hunt is really about and the the hunt kind

of Uh, she the father's training the two girls

for it But they don't actually go on on the hunt.

She kind of goes to train them Okay, and uh that

kind of gets interrupted in the middle of it.

And then I think they're pirates But they they

go off and I thought it was space the first time

I read it that they were off into but it's actually

they're underwater Squids are called mammoths

for whatever reason which really confused the

fuck out of me I had trouble the first time but

second time or right through I realized it actually

was in the water because I thought it was just

like some kind of space squid or something because

it seriously did look like a outer space thing

to me slick the guy from the pirate movie or

whatever the The funky dude the squid head guy.

Oh, uh, Davy Jones. Yeah, Davy Jones. No, it

was just a regular squid It wasn't Davy Jones,

but they get like pirates after them. They get

boarded. The two little girls get taken. And

so did this. It looked like a giant scuba suit

that is apparently very important to them because

it's been handed down and it's only activated

with the DNA of this family. But the pirate that's

in charge kind of knows that it's activated by

the DNA in the eye or something. So he rips the

father's eye out and activates and steals the

helm. And that's pretty much the entire issue.

And it kind of deals with the interaction of

the family, which they all seem to get along

really well. You get to see the... The aftermath

of the husband and wife having sex in the first

couple of pages So you pretty much get to check

out his wife. So how would you describe it? What

rollercoaster would you use? What were my options

Chuck Hydra demon drop Thunderhawk talon steel

force possessed It's crazy, you don't know really

know what's going on yet It's kind of horrible

looking in some parts, but still very beautiful

So I'll go with that But this this I feel like

this comic is more of a feast of the eyes then

an actual story at this point. I'm going to continue

up and I've actually told Dave at Comics on the

Green, hope he feels better still again, and

I told him if he would put the second, third

issue away for me so maybe I could read those

and hopefully... I'll be able to figure it out

and enjoy more. This is an image comic and I

thought it was going to be kind of in the same

vein as Saga, but it's something completely different.

I feel like this is more of a hardcore science

fiction than Saga is, where Saga is a lot more

fun. This feels a lot more serious. And last

week I talked about two books I got from image

a deadly class in east to west and I read neither

of them I read a little bit of East to us, but

I just I didn't have it in me. So I felt like

I'd wait until I could sit down and actually

appreciate it a little bit. So it sounds like

you are going to continue with this for more.

So that's at least good. That's a good sign.

I'm going to try it out a little bit and give

it a chance because I felt like there was a lot

more story there and I felt like he didn't get

it all written in this one book. So I figured

I'd try it like two or three. at least give it

a chance to see where the story is going and

let it unfold a little bit more before I really

put a hardcore judgment on it. So far, it's very

beautiful, but I'm not getting much out of the

written side of it. What was it called again?

It's called Low, which they do kind of a movie

thing where they reference the title. And they're

kind of in the ocean is kind of where they live,

which I got off the second read. So they're low.

I get it. They're two kids taken away. So the

parents are kind of low from that, emotionally

low after that. I see what they did there. The

father who kind of narrates the beginning and

end. He's the pessimist. His wife's the optimist.

So he's low. And when they were dancing, they

were getting low. Get low, low, low. I guess

we'll have to go out and get low. It's also a

pretty good movie, too. So there you go. So I'm

starring Bill Murray. Interesting very cool.

I will I've not heard of that book So I'm always

on the lookout for some cool off -the -wall books

that you know are beyond just the realm of superheroes

But you know not the superheroes are bad and

we'll get to that later Yeah, I'm just trying

to expand my horizons and and I picked up saga

and I thought it was great So I figured I'd try

out some other stuff still need to do that This

whole reading watch it's it's hard. It's a hard

job. It really is Especially when you have a

job. I know stupid work Alrighty I actually got

to see a really really great movie Besides guardians

of the galaxy which we'll get to later But which

is a big reason why I didn't get to read anything

because this is a pretty long movie It's about

two hours and 45 minutes, but it's a movie I

think that deserves that and I don't know if

you've heard about this at all. I did Read every

review of it on geocast radio that's there now

and it's very glowing review because it's I thought

it was really An amazing film that I highly anticipated

and that was boyhood by richard linklater And

those who don't know some people might know who

he is, but he's directed a bunch of stuff He's

directed days and confused the before trilogy

the before sunset sunrise and last year before

midnight He's also done a few like school school

of rock with jack black. He's kind of like done

a little bit of everything schoolhouse rock No

school of rocks with Jack Black. Yes, I'm only

a bill, and I'm sitting here on Capitol Hill.

It was a long, long journey. That's all I remember.

I was going to say, how long can you go? Well,

we're going to be here until this bill becomes

law. So we'll be here forever. But no, the story

of boarhead, it's been getting a lot of press

lately, mainly because of the concept of its

creation and what Richard Link later did was

he made a movie in over 12 years. He cast this

kid and actually his own daughter along with

Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette and they shot

a little bit for what for a year for 12 years

in a row so you can kind of get to see the progression

of this kid as he grows old. They're making a

movie over 12 years I mean, it's accomplishment

in itself. The fact that it ever happened. And

apparently when it got greenlit by the studio

or by who it's people who funded it, they didn't

really fund a 12 year project. They funded one

or 12 one year projects, but they didn't realize

it was all going to be one movie. But what's

interesting about it, though, is that you could

watch in the walk in the boyhood and know absolutely

nothing about its creation and anything about

like the fact that it's the same kid throughout

the entire time. And it really doesn't matter.

And. Richard link later has a very unique style.

It's very I would say He in a way his style is

interesting because there's very little style

in some ways He's kind of just points and shoots.

He's very big on dialogue He's very big on creating

authentic moments and there's no story here Really

people who are like very plot -driven will probably

be kind of crazy and walk out and think well

Nothing really happens kid just kind of grew

older and that is true It's hard not to relate

to this movie not because it's stuff that happened

to you or you can say oh I remember when that

happened to me more so it's just you can relate

to it because of how Authentic it is and how

true to life it is and how it feels like Like

a legitimate kid growing up and all the heartaches

and there are some issues some some really tense

scenes Ethan Hawke is like his you know, his

dad who's maybe a little bit aloof in the beginning,

but as things grow older you see him progress

as a person, same thing with Patricia Arquette.

And this kid growing up, you kind of see where

he's at the beginning and where he is at the

end. And there's so much growth there. But it

just it really nails on how like our memory works,

because it's very much just tidbits of things

here and there. It doesn't really highlight always

all the big moments. Sometimes it's the smaller

things. And it's just really wonderfully told.

And like I said, it's two hours and 45 minutes,

but it didn't feel like that. In the end, it

does drag a little bit. And I did have some issues

because it moves year to year. And it doesn't

tell you that, which I thought was great. You

can only really tell by the changing of the people

because they look older. They'll have some nods

to what the year is because of music that's playing

or games that are being played or what have you.

And some of those were done rather clunkily.

And there's some. plot like there's some plot

ends that end up in near the end of the film

that feel a little bit forced but overall it

is a really great film not for everyone like

richard linklater is very big on having dialogue

driven scenes that are very big on pontificating

on life's big questions and some of it might

sound pretentious but i think it it fits the

characters and it's very authentic to his own

life so i don't know i thought it was wonderful

A must see in my eyes. It's near the top three

for me of this year like this boyhood under the

skin and Blue run up in my favorite movies movies

of the year and this is very very much up there

so I actually can't wait to see it again because

There's a lot I loved about it. So uh, anyways,

that's I will stop saying that and then like

I said There is a review on geek cast radio .com

that I went into even further detail and much

love So i'm probably probably overplaying it

too much and you're gonna watch it and hate it

For that, I apologize. But like I said, if you

like Richard Linklater, you like the Before series,

you're going to love this. All right, all right,

all right. Matthew McCahoney does not show up.

But I mean, I wouldn't be against it. Yeah. But

all right. Anything else before we take a break?

I just wanted to talk about a book that I picked

up this week. And that was something that I had

pre -ordered on Amazon. I actually got this.

It wasn't actually this week. It was a while

ago. I kind of saved it for now because it's

appropriate with our guardians talk a little

bit. But I was able to pick up the Infinity Gauntlet

Omnibus. Nice. Yeah. I wish you just stopped

it before Omnibus. That would have been so awesome.

Well, the funny thing is this thing is like literally

three inches thick. And I'm pretty sure you could

whack Thanos over the head and just take the

Infinity Gauntlet from him with this. Freaking

thing is huge. It's over 1200 pages Wow Yeah,

it's got you know, the main story. It's got all

the tie -ins. It's got a bunch of silver surfer

issues There's dr. Strange issues in it. I didn't

realize it was like that much of a story to it

Wow, that's that's insane. Yeah, there's tons

of tie -ins and everything and there's some You

know even like Hulk issues and you just random

stuff that like ties in and everything but it's

it's really really cool and I felt like you know

since that's like my favorite story. I figured

you know this is something I have to have Obviously

I've read the story many times, but now I have

it with all of its You know tie -ins to go with

it and some of those I I haven't read actually

because that's kind of hard to pick up all the

ones that that were associated with that but

very very cool pick up if you're a fan of the

Infinity Gauntlet story or Thanos at all and

you get some some spare change laying around

I would definitely look into the Infinity gauntlet

omnibus. Yeah, that's impressive. Yeah, I I thought

just the regular story was impressed but three

inches Yeah, only for comic book fans should

three inches be impressive You get three inches

and you control the universe Now we understand

why he wants that gauntlet so much I offended

a lot of people I had call myself a comic book

fan so that that was a Friendly fire so before

you scream at me All right All right, we're gonna

take a break before things get too out of hand

and when we come back We'll get into some guardians

of the galaxy. We will see in a bit Returning

welcome back and like I said, we're gonna get

into some Guardians of the Galaxy talk It's been

getting a lot of love making a lot of money and

we'll just start here quickly just give her a

brief, you know overall impressions of the film

before we get into the details and Chuck I think

I'll start with you because I know when we talked

about the trailers like I think you were a little

bit the most apprehensive out of all of us So

I'm curious after your apprehension knowing,

you know knowing you're a little bit worried

about the comedy Going into it now. How do you

feel about guardians of the galaxy? three -word

answer Well, I I want to clarify I wasn't like

um I wasn't hesitant on like the comedy of the

movie I was hesitant of like how they were marketing

it at first and I think uh When they released

a couple of trailers after that, I think it helped

a lot you know, showing that it did have more

of a serious side to it and everything. But back

to the actual movie, I freaking loved this movie,

like loved it. Let me bang on the table. I freaking

love this movie. I wouldn't put it like, I mean,

we can get into ranking later, but it's not my

favorite movie of the year, but it's pretty damn

high. It's definitely the funniest Marvel movie

for me. I mean, I haven't laughed that hard in

a long time. I thought that comedy was written

in very well, sprinkled in throughout. It went

perfectly with the flow of the movie. We talked

about the trailer and I was a little worried

about the marketing in the beginning, but I still

hear people saying... to me still this week,

you know, like, oh, that movie, you know, that

looks stupid. You know, the the previews that

look stupid. And, you know, I'm telling them

now, I'm like, no, go freaking see this movie

because there's a lot of people out there screaming

from the rooftops to go see this movie. Yeah.

And I'm trying to like I heard I'm trying to

like sway these people because for some reason,

like some of these previews like really turned

them off to it. But I'm telling them, like, listen,

like it doesn't matter. Whether you like these

kind of movies or not or you know, whether you're

a kid or an adult like you're you're probably

gonna love this movie so like I seriously recommend

going to see this and I mean we're seeing like,

you know, it made 94 million the opening weekend

So and I think it shattered the expectations

that were like 60 million or something Yeah,

they were anticipating 60 to 70 million and it

made 94. Yeah, that is crazy, you know Highest

August weekend of all time or whatever Yeah,

it beat the record held by born ultimatum. I

saw like a tweet by James Gunn He's like the

irony of this is like, I'm a really big James

born I'm a really big born ultimatum fan. It's

like one of my top ten favorite films. So Yeah,

so Greg, what did you think of Guardians of the

Galaxy? I thought it was fucking amazing. It

was really good. I think it's probably up there

of one of the best Marvel movies that has come

out, to be quite honest. I think when we get

into more of a discussion about it, it'll reveal

more of my... Will you like to ban it? Yeah.

Sounds good. All right, so I know how to use

words. Your brain just had a demon drop. It's

OK. Yeah, just crap right in the bucket. All

right. So Dan, what are your initial thoughts?

My initial thoughts is I do. I liked it a great

deal. I probably liked it a little less than

you guys, but I will say that I had issues with

it. Not great issues. If you read my review,

I brought up a lot of those issues, but I also

said what it does really well makes me not really

care about those issues. I could see. Even enjoying

this more and more in a rewatch because there

is a lot of really great comedy here And I think

comedy that would work even better on second

viewings and there's a lot more there than than

I saw plus it has uh different marvel related

stuff in the background that you could probably

catch on the second watch too that yeah, definitely

we will definitely get to some of that and I

think too what would really reward this with

rewatching is The characters like a movie that

I think that has really great characters like

this tends to Get even better when you watch

it because it's not necessarily the plot. That's

the most interesting I mean the Fox probably

the least interesting thing about the movie It's

really just the characters themselves that and

I just love the look of the movie you talked

about Greg with your with the low comic and which

I sent you a Picture message on your phone. I

did see that that looks actually looks very interesting

But the colors and the look of this film. I just

love it. I just it's just so colorful so bright

and cheery I'm like this is what like DC movie

should be right like DC should be bright and

Colorful you did dark Yeah, and this the space

like the nebula they took a lot of like realistic

or not I guess like, you know photos of nebulas

and look use a lot of their colors very bright

very and The words are all different. I found

the fact that they had nowhere in there. I mean

got images of the Celestials. I'm like, holy

shite I Just I just love to look I think that

was the best thing just our direction itself

was just amazing This was so it was unlike any

other Marvel film in that in that aspect of it

It did feel like another world because not to

the Marvel films have been dark and dreary I

mean Thor has been very cultural as well. But

this one I thought just took it to another level

I had a lot of people compare this to Star Wars

and I think it is very much in the vein of that

very much in the vein of classic sci -fi and

fantasy that's like, hey, quirky, we're weird.

And it's also in the vein of Indiana Jones as

well. Yeah, definitely. It definitely has its

influences there. And I just, you know, the practical

makeup along with the special effects. So we'll

get we can get into some of the issues, I guess.

And I guess since we've all get given our initial

impressions, let's let's, I guess, go into, you

know, we talked about the characters and I think

that's a good place to start with. So. With all

these different characters, how do we feel within

the guardians of the galaxy? And how it represented

the characters compared to the comic and how

they all kind of fit within this film like you

were you any issues with them? How did you how

did you think of them overall like the performances

and whatnot chris prac star lord bradley cooper

And what what did you think about the characters

overall check? I had no problem with the characters.

Um, I know they changed some stuff Honestly,

i'm not gonna complain at all like it's the stuff

that they're changing at this point Overall if

you look at it, it's very very similar to the

comics It's obviously like funnier than the comics.

The comics did have an element of humor to them

this stepped it up quite a bit just because You

kind of have to do that to to sell a talking

raccoon and tree Which they sold very very well.

Yes, so many great moments I mean, I think their

introductions really good like you like and the

fact that they just bring them in right? I mean,

there's no like Brief overview of like a rocket

and a tree. They're just there on this planet

looking for for bounty. I mean Yeah, we're here

deal with it. I mean Rockets first joke is talking

about how Stan Lee is a pedophile kind of I Believe

he was a creepy old perv not a pedophile true.

I think I took it too far there But yeah, so

that is very true. I do think in the characters

grew in the Rock I mean rocket was great, but

honestly, I think my favorite character walking

out of it was Groot. I just I would agree with

that though. Totally And honestly, I know I know

you guys have read the comic right? Yes comic

Only read maybe one or two. I'm not that in depth

with the Guardian stuff I'm not a big space comic

fan. So I I'm probably the least intelligent

one going into this movie At least knowledgeable.

You don't have to say anything. At least knowledgeable,

okay. Don't insult yourself, Greg. Come on. Don't

sell yourself short. But yeah, I would say, Dan,

maybe you would agree with this, but I would

say of all the characters on the team, I think

they nailed Groot the best. Yeah, I would say

so. I do think Rocket, honestly, the only ones

I really had an issue with at all in any way,

shape or form were that of Drax and Gamora. See,

I like tracks. I thought tracks had a lot of

good moments, but there are certain moments I

think that didn't work for me completely maybe

not necessarily the character but some of the

actions like there was a scene in which basically

he calls up the enemy to try to start a fight

and and not necessarily a character moment that

bothered me just like a plot moment that kind

of Urked me a little bit cuz I thought it was

very like a lazy way to get things moving I just

thought like that seems kind of like out of left

field a little bit Yeah, it kind of speaks to

like the To Drax's like arrogance because he

and a little bit of his dumbness Yeah, he's like

so consumed with finding Ronan and killing him

and at this point. They're not a team yet So

he's like he really doesn't care about the well

-being of it of the other guardians So I don't

know I felt that like to me at least that kind

of fit I mean I could see where you're coming

from though and and you say it's quick and convenient

but What better way to get what you want than

the quick and convenient way? And if that's what

he found is quick and convenient then that's

what he's gonna go with. Yeah, I guess I mean

convenient is a good good at times, but I guess

a lot a lot of the narrative felt very Convenient

in a lot of ways that was like Not a huge issue.

I'm mostly at an issue. If we're going to refer

in the issue part already, and I feel like I

can hear people yelling at me for not loving

everything about it. Don't tell people discuss

at an appropriate level of volume. But I guess

regarding that, that to me was just an example

of it overall. Because what I did really love

about the fact was the Garnian's motivations

was very much very simple, just like they want

money. And I love that. I love that. That was

just their initial Reasoning for everything.

It's just like they're out for themselves or

very simple straight to the point. I thought

that was really great I just had an issue with

like Ronan a great deal like as a comic fan I

know Ronan and I'm not at all against changing

things or adjusting things. I just felt I hadn't

understood where he was coming from But as someone

coming in this with no knowledge of the comic

books, I don't know if they would get why Ronan

was such had such hatred for Xander which is

obviously supposed to stand in for the Cree I

get or for the scrolls since they can't use the

scrolls I mean just like they never really I

don't know like his reasoning for doing all this

was never really fully developed and Him as a

character. I thought the performance was good.

But overall I thought as a character he's a little

bit too one -dimensional I was hoping for once

Marvel besides Loki would have a super villain

that had Something to him. That was not just

I want to destroy this world, I guess Well, how

about the other well sort of villain in this

movie of Thanos Do you think he's kind of filling

out dimensionally? I think they're using him

really appropriately how he's like a shadow in

the background You're kind of building him up

You you know you have a little bit in the end

of the Avengers and you have a little bit here

where he's just you know letting things play

out in Hawaii and You where you're just like

what is his plan here? He's not he's like moving

the chess pieces. You can tell like Ronan seems

like a pawn for him I like how they're building

up Thanos a lot. I mean we don't get a great

deal of Thanos but what we got I liked and I

thought Josh Brolin so far I liked what he did

there that was very limited like I said and I

think they did the costume work on him and the

look of Thanos was very well done. I think it

was much better than the two or three seconds

that we got of him in the end of the Avengers.

I thought he looked much better in this one.

Yeah, he looked he looked really sweet and i'll

say too that I I went like I went into this movie

I tried to I tried to avoid all the like spoiler

stuff like a plague and Like I kind of had an

inkling that Thanos would be in it, but I didn't

let myself believe it for sure So I kind of like

I still wanted myself to be surprised, you know,

and then that moment when I saw him I was like,

holy shit. That's freaking Thanos like and They

they had him with his little this little hover

around chair and everything you know that's right

out of the comics and they they put in that air

so that was sweet but yeah though Greg you mentioned

the look of them I was looking through my omnibus

earlier and they have a cover of when they re

-released the Thanos Quest one -shot which is

how he gathers the infinity gems and the cover

on that was the 2012 version. The cover of that

was done by artist Andy Park and I'm pretty sure

like the look in the movie was based primarily

on that rendition because it looks I mean, it

looks like right off the screen, like it was

depicted. Maybe I could like send you guys a

cover shot of that or something. But I think

they used his. It's not obviously not like the.

The 90s version, it's it's a little bit more

tweaked, like there's some, you know, gold trim

here and there, and it looks a little bit more

modern and stuff. But I think they adopted that

look and it looked great, like Greg said. And

I was trying to look at more like armor instead

of a suit. Yeah, like it looks more like armor

instead of spandex or something, you know, yeah

in a blue skirt, but um, I do like I Did like

Josh Brolin's voice. I thought that was really

really cool. And when he He said about bathing

together, but Gabe blah blah blah bathing together

when he said about bathing the starways in your

blood and You know, just listen to that voice

was so crazy. Like he nailed that But I found

myself looking at trying to see Josh Brolin underneath

all that and it's kind of tough but you can pick

up a little bit. But yeah, I'd like to just go

back to Ronan for a second. We talked about him

earlier and I've been reading this in a lot of

reviews and not a lot but a good deal. People

saying that like it's lacking a developed villain

and everything and Ronan's not given enough backstory

and fleshed out and everything but I think it

to me like it really works for this movie and

it's he's a vehicle to move the movie along to

me it's to me this is the Guardian story this

is about the Guardians coming together how diverse

they are and there's a lot to get through there

and it pretty much takes the spotlight of the

movie and I think if you're gonna make a movie

with a good villain that's like Don't want to

say a different story, but like when we look

at Loki and how great he was in Avengers He was

developed before that in the Thor movie. So there's

a lot of Development there that has to occur

and I think when when you're talking about a

team there's a ton of explanation that has to

go in there and the whole act of bringing them

together and this isn't even like Avengers because

You know the Avengers characters were all established

that they were the heroic type. So, you know,

we expect them to get together. We expect them

to save the world. These guys don't have to do

anything. You know, they they can just go their

separate ways and, you know, run like hell and

hope they don't get destroyed by, you know, Ronan.

But the magic to me in the film is. You know,

them coming together when they really have no

business being heroes. I definitely I'm sorry.

No, go ahead. I definitely agree with that like

they're the vehicle. I mean this the vehicle

analogy there is very apt because it's very true

that the villain story here is just a motivator

is just here so that we have something for our

team to you know, come together and Defeat basically

giving something to bring them together and I

and I 100 % agree with that I my issue would

be then like I think that'd be a great opportunity

then to maybe even make it a little bit smaller

Not have to have it like this world dominating

event or something like that where you have to

have this Grand finale where it's like, you know,

if they don't save the world, maybe make it smaller

so you don't have to even Relying on the villain

as much where it's maybe a smaller story that

doesn't have such a gigantic ending But it is

more apt for the characters and it's more putting

that forward I think it's it's hard to do that

where you're trying it is very difficult like

you're mentioning to You have all these weird

characters all these odd characters trying to

get them together And then at the same time having

a villain that you're trying to do the same.

It's it's difficult It's so I think in a way

there may have been a better way to then But

I think you would run into narrative issues there

though because without something that big what

reason would They have to come together, you

know I think nothing makes them care short of

the galaxy being destroyed. You know what I mean?

yeah, well, I think the motivation of honestly

the Motivation of money was a good way of starting

it off. And then I I don't what could you do?

That's not maybe situation in which they have

their mission in which they are bonding because

they're trying to get that this overall goal

of trying to get this reward and then something

happens and then which requires them to Go save

a member of the other team because they felt

it was their honor yet I mean I get that like

how do you get them to come together? Like that's

the same thing with the Avengers All these powerful

people what can unite them in order for them

to fight? And I don't know like that's true I

think you do run into issues and like I'm saying

it's not a gigantic issue It did not and not

like I walked away from it thinking now. I don't

like this movie, but I think it What hurts it

some ways is unfairly because it's a common issue

with Marvel is that they've had? Difficulties

establishing a lot of their villains and in great

ways some of them have worked out better than

others up You know winter soldier was great Loki's

been good. I thought whiplash was okay. Obadiah

stain was okay, but I Think in a way it just

magnifies it in that way, you know, so again

It's more of a nitpick than I like. Hey, this

is an issue But it was I just I guess I was hoping

for marks I think there were some nuance within

the character of Ronan that they could have Got

into that they really didn't but I just maybe

wanted a little bit more like maybe even if it's

just in the finale not to get anything away,

but how Big part of him in the finale is literally

sitting in a room And that was like I was hoping

we'd get more from him like even it wasn't bringing

him into two -dimensional character Maybe if

just sticking with more than one dimension, I

guess I was just hoping for more in that climax

Yeah, I mean I definitely understand what you're

saying but to me everything fit perfectly with

what they were trying to do because I mean, they're

not only focusing on this movie like they're

focusing on everything that's Coming after this

as well. So yeah That big story with Ronan having

the power gem and trying to destroy the world,

that fits into the grand scheme and the fact

that they wanted to focus on the relationship

between Gamora and Nebula and how jealous Nebula

is of her being the favorite. Daughter and everything.

I did really dig that character I hope we get

more of nebula because she looked freaking awesome

like the look of that character was phenomenal

So yeah, and I'm really glad that they explored

that out more I felt like Ronan was kind of like

like you said just a vehicle But I definitely

agree like Ronan is a really cool character in

and of himself and don't get wrong I would love

to see more of him, but I would hate to see the

rest of the story kind of diminished for you

know flushing him out, but Yeah, I mean that's

very true. I mean you do You do have that difficulty

of like what do you do? Especially when like

you're considering what marble is doing like

you mentioned You don't just have this more in

the movie to worry about you have so many more

So I know a lot of people complain like oh, it's

only a setup for more and which I like I don't

think that's a problem I think that could be

a good thing and I liked how this set it up for

further because I honestly Had no idea that this

would link into the infinity gems Like I didn't

have I had no idea that was going into it. So

Yeah, and the weird thing is it becomes like

a chess match for, you know, all the directors

and the people at Marvel Studios because they're

trying to play off of what expectations are people

going to have after seeing this? And how is it

going to affect their view of Thanos and how

bad ass he is? And I just think it all played

into that. But just. Thanos man, like what the

hell that's freaking awesome. Yeah, let's make

it a point though It's like when you think about

it Thanos has less infinity rings than he started

out with but no and Thanos don't ever sell him

short because I'm sure he's got something you

think you think you got him and then you don't

so as a badass bracket has showed us, you know,

and you know, maybe we'll get of course like

Greg's thoughts and everything but after After

we give our thoughts and everything I wanted

to get into more about the infinity gems because

and like what's to come because I noticed there's

A lot of confusion around the internet. So, you

know once we all kind of Give dollar points here.

I wanted to talk about that a little bit But

so great. I don't know if I got your thoughts

on what you thought overall of the the whole

I guess villain plot and how that worked out

I'm kind of on the Chuck page there with all

that. I think you guys pretty much covered it

I I think with the other characters though I

think Groot kind of gets a majority of the love

and popularity coming out of this movie thanks

to his hilarity and kind of I felt like a little

bit of his innocence. He was kind of like a child's

personality, kind of, which I think endears him

to audiences more. And I think you kind of get

the same thing with Rocket, but just because

of his looks of something adorable. And I know

he kicked my ass for saying that. But I think

overall his looks and then his raunchy, well,

not raunchy, but his offensive which really was

an offensive humor and just remarks got him a

lot of popularity. So I think like Star -Lord

who's supposed to be the the top villain that

kind of falls to a third spot but still hilarious.

If I was going to have an issue with any of the

characters maybe it would be Gamora but I there's

really nothing there for me to pick on. She's

just kind of I don't know. Gamora and Drax were

kind of the two lesser characters for me, but

they were still awesome. I did like a little

twist they put on Drax where he took everything

literally. I thought that was pretty funny and

that led to a lot. That thing goes over my head.

Catch it. See, Drax became one of my favorite

characters in this movie, honestly. I found it

kind of endearing and refreshing, just the loyalty

and the friendship that he had for his other

team members. just showing that like underneath

he's like a really good guy and I think like

yeah and I think I don't know he's not getting

the props he deserved I just like to you know

throw some out there to him and I think I think

Dave Batista did a decent job you know there

were one or two parts that showed he was a bit

of a greenhorn but you know overall I bought

it you know I thought he did pretty well and

I liked the balance that he brought to the team

because there was like, you know, the hilarity

of like three characters and he is like this

literal guy like Dan mentioned that that was

a great spin that they put on it. So I really

enjoyed him on that team. He was probably one

of my favorite behind Groot. He did have some

good. Go ahead, Greg. I did have trouble with

one part of acting, of somebody that I really

think is a great actress. And it was just like

this one time where she was running off camera

and throwing a fit about something. Just, it

really didn't sell me on it. It was Karen Gillian

as Nebula. There was one part where she was throwing

a fit about something and ran off screen. I just

kind of... For me, I've seen her in a doctor

who a lot so I you kind of I've seen her like

on red carpets and stuff and what not watching

different things not Literally seen her. I'm

not stalking her. I swear to God No matter what

those training orders say you follow her She's

gorgeous. Even though she's bald. I'm following

a lot of people just because Maybe about two

minutes ago just followed Emily Radojkowski on

Twitter. As you guys were fighting it out, not

fighting it out, but I followed her. But there

was one part of hers I didn't find really believable.

And like you said, there was a couple moments

from Dave Bautista that I thought weren't that

great. But overall, those couple of things you

could kind of dismiss, I think I could say. But

overall the characters are pretty damn good.

I thought oh definitely. Yeah, I was surprised

that kind of how much of a I Guess this word

kind of overemphasized it but I was a bit surprised

of how much of a sweetheart They made they made

Gamora into you know, like yeah, she was kind

of a bleeding heart yeah, like she's had the

the nickname in the comics as being the deadliest

woman in the galaxy and She she didn't really

show that so they definitely kind of diverged

from the comics there a little bit, but it fit

well into what they were doing for the most part.

I mean, they could have maybe made her a little

bit more badass, but that's I guess that's nitpicky.

But still, I wanted to go Kirk on her ass, though.

Of course. The go back to I know greg you mentioned

you felt like star lord got third brilliant in

this because of all the other characters that

were They were there and I could see that but

I do think like his emotional story is definitely

the center of the film Definitely. Yeah, and

I mean we haven't mentioned it yet, but you have

to mention how awesome the soundtrack is and

how well it's used It's fantastic. I think it's

you know, Iron Man had a lot of AC DC songs,

obviously But I think this was even it was a

lot better because the music became part of the

story that in Iron Man It wasn't part of an integral

part of the story for the most part. No, it's

more of like an adrenaline like fix. This was

like yeah If this doesn't win some type of award

for you know soundtrack or something in musical

score, i'm gonna riot Well, the crappy thing

is it can't win anything for score. Well, I guess

it could because there's a score here but for

the It doesn't really matter but you can't reward

you can't you like using other songs doesn't

really necessarily win you anything, but that's

it's a stupid thing Uh, but anyways, but yeah,

it was it was used really well and I thought

chris pratt is sorry lord was Amazing. I thought

he was very funny charismatic He had some good

emotional moments. I think a lot of them had

emotional moments like a rocket raccoon like

when he got drunk There was a really good moment

there and they never overplayed it. It was a

moment Blah blah blah the end moment with with

rocket was really good him in Drax. Oh, yeah,

definitely and Every I think this what I'm from

did did well too was it would like Lead you a

certain way thinking, OK, this is where we're

getting this scene. This is where the villain

is going to give her plan and have this model

log. And then it subverts that by shooting that

person with a rocket launcher. So it was really

great at like setting up those moments. It's

like, OK, here we go. And then it's like, nope,

not happening here. So or, you know, maybe distracting

with a dance competition. That was I was wow.

That was I can't believe that happened, but it

was it was very good. Go back to Chris Pratt.

I thought he was really great and I love his

costume design. I love his mask and it's very

much like the comics, his weapons, but he has

that Han Solo Indiana Jones but like for the

new generation type of vibe to him. I love a

lot of his like pop -cult references and they

weren't just like Shrek pop -cult references

or anything like that. They fit his character

because he's this kid from the 80s. So like Ninja

Turtles or Ranger Rick or Growing Tree, they

all fit. John Stamos the rebel. John Stamos the

rebel. Yeah Yeah, so I thought that was I thought

Star Lord I think they're all the great characters

and in their own ways I mean I had some issues

with some of them, but I do want to sell Chris

Pratt short because I thought he was really good

Absolutely, I will go back to he did jump around

here, Dan, but I go back to the do it up Get

up get up get down That was the one song that

wasn't in the movie. What was the 90s? Next one.

Next. Yeah, that was that was the next decade.

So but when you're talking about Ronan and the

and the final scene there, I do have to agree

with you. The the scene where they closed the

the security doors to like protect him in this

vault. I'm like, he has the freaking power gem.

Who the hell is going to mess with them? Like,

get the damn security doors up, like defend yourself

like a man. Yeah. But I did read like, this is

kind of weird. Like I read in a couple of reviews

online, you know, somebody was saying that they

thought this had like TV budget effects and stuff

like that. And I'm like, are you serious? Yeah.

I mean, this I did not get that impression at

all. I mean, the the look of this film like you

talked about early was amazing. And just the.

Like, they said the alien worlds looked like,

you know, concept artwork or something, and I'm

like, no, not at all. Yeah, I could not disagree

with that more because I thought, yeah, I mean,

some of the I think that's what was great about

it was that the concepts are out there, crazy.

I don't know. I think that's a guy who's just

seeing weird things and assuming, oh, these aliens

look like Star Trek aliens because they have

blue face paid on. I think that's I don't agree

with that criticism one bit. I mean, the art

design here is fantastic. Yeah, and that's part

of the lure of this because it gives such a sense

of wonder. And I don't know about you guys, but

I don't really know what outer space looks like.

I've never been there. So, I mean, you watch

something like this, it's the genuine sense of

wonder. You're like, oh, wow, like, that's what

a nebula looks like from far away. Or that's

what the edge of the universe looks like, where

nowhere is, you know? And there's just these...

gaseous cosmic clouds. And, you know, that's

what these different worlds look like. You know,

Nova Corps, this built up urban world. And, you

know, the one that they showed in the beginning

was like this desolate and abandoned world and

stuff. It's I thought the world building was

just fine. Oh, I mean, this movie moves quick.

Like how many planets do we go to? I mean, I

didn't I thought that was a good thing. I mean,

it's just like, boom, boom, here's this world.

You deal with it. We're going to. Yeah, I thought.

I mean the fact that nowhere was in this movie

and the fact that celestials exist in the marvel

cinematic universe Oh, yeah, that's that's pretty

awesome. So by the way guys Just letting you

know, I just favorited all of emily ratajkowski's

pictures on twitter The galaxy again, that's

your infinity gauntlet I guess anything else.

I mean, I mean it's funny though like everything

that works for this movie and I mean There's

some good action but it's it's interesting how

it's like that's almost like the fifth thing

you think about is the action because there's

so much else. Yeah, so I mean comedy costumes

Yeah, I mean the action that was good I mean

I really loved at the end like the using of that

like netting to like stop the shit from coming

down and yeah, that was pretty cool and I think

it was a good move to Depower the Nova core and

not have them these like flying beings I mean

they can always go back and do that again, but

I considering everything they're doing and trying

to explain that I think it's a good idea just

to like make them into These like basically,

you know police cops in a way. So I did like

that. So I wanted to get into a little bit. I

don't know if you guys had any other thoughts

you wanted to share or anything. I'm pretty good.

I'm good. We're going to rank up Marvel movies,

right? Yeah, we'll do that. Tell where we put

this one at least. For sure. Yeah, we should

definitely do that at some point. We can do that

right now if you want. What do you guys think?

Well, I guess you're looking at this year alone

because of what we had like four movies coming

out this year You have what captain america?

You have two you have x -men days of future past

spider -man and then guardians Wow, uh, I would

still put cap winter soldier as my favorite marvel

movie even not just here I think of all of all

of them and Probably then the adventure. I mean

and then probably x -men days of future past

Well, I and then This one you're right underneath

extra days of future past but those are very

close to me I will say like I enjoyed days of

future past more in the second watch so I could

see that happening again with with Guardians

and then spiderman 2 in the bottom. So Chuck,

what about you? Yeah, I'm pretty much along the

same lines. I still got to keep cap 2 at the

top for me I mean, there's so many things great

about that movie was almost perfect in my eyes

like But I'm second, I would definitely put Guardians.

Just Thanos. Come on. He's in a movie. No, but

I mean, honestly, like if I was rating it, I

know it's a little generous, but I'd give it

a four and a half star rating. I just liked it

that much. And, you know, third, I would have

Days of Future Past and Spider -Man at the bottom,

which it's not a bad. Not a bad thing because

Spider -Man 2, I did like a lot of things about

it, but I definitely think it was fourth best

among these this year. And Greg? I'm going to

go with Guardians first. It is my new favorite

movie. I'm going to go with Captain America Winter

Soldier is my number two. I'm going to go with

Avengers as number three and then number four

would be X -Men. Days of Future Past and probably

last and there would be Spider -man. Yeah. Yeah,

I mean, I think I still I I don't know where

I'd rank Avengers compared the Guardians I would

probably say Avengers higher, but it's I mean

It's it's a good year to be a geek cuz I mean,

you know, we got it good when we're it's it's

too hard to determine which one we like better

I mean the fact this year we had camp winter

soldier days of future paths and guardians and

they all Lived up to their expectations. I mean,

that's a good thing. I mean, yeah, so It's not

not a bad year. Not a bad year, but I know we

did we mentioned some of it but there's tons

of easter eggs going into this and Chuck I mean,

you probably know most about the comics comic

the cosmic comic universe. That's hard to say

So, what did you find that you I know you had

a few things I saw a few things, but there was

also some things I saw online that I missed that

I was kind of ticked off about. And I would love

to go see it a second time, but I don't know

if that's going to happen. But one of the I mean,

the most obvious one probably is nowhere, you

know, having the severed head of the celestial.

That was straight out of the comics. That was

their base of operations. But I guess, you know,

one of the cool ones, Dan, you talked about it

earlier when when Collector was explaining. the

infinity stones and actually show a celestial

like destroying a planet and stuff yeah i mean

that's just one of those you know geek moments

like holy shit pretty cool they do exist yeah

but to me it made it sound like the celestial

was using an infinity gem yeah it seemed like

that's the way they were selling it and almost

it did seem like that way yeah which that didn't

happen right i mean i'm not wrong No, not really.

And then I guess some other ones. And this is

obviously. I mean, this goes without saying,

but spoiler territory. So if you don't want to

hear any of these or you want to find them yourself,

I would skip ahead a couple of minutes. But I

mean, if you haven't seen Guardians yet, I don't

know what to do with you. Go or send you to Xandar.

You don't belong on this planet. No. But how

about Cosmo, the space dog? Yeah, that was. That

was very cool. I was wondering if they're going

to have him talk or not. I could see why they

didn't. But, you know, that was like a little

nod. So many talking animals. And it was cool

because he showed up twice. Obviously, if he

stayed for the after scene, the after credit

scene, he shows up again, kind of licking the

face of the collector. Yeah. And then, of course,

the next obvious one was Howard the Duck. Yes,

that was so weird. Do you think they're actually

going to make a Howard the Duck movie? I don't

think so because the creators of hearted duck

still own him like they had to get special permission

just to even use them Okay, so I doubt it. I

mean I could see him showing up again, but I

doubt there I think that was just Nathan feeling

and being like or not Nathan Fillion who was

in the movie by the way He was the yes. He he

was the guy who challenged Groot in the in the

jail cell, which I I totally missed that. Me

too. I had no idea. I was looking for him the

entire movie. I'm like, where's Nathan Fillion?

And then I thought he was the voice of Howard

the Duck, but it wasn't. It was Seth Green. So

yeah. That was pretty unexpected, too. That was

cool. And from what I've heard, the first time

you see Howard the Duck is not in the after credit

scene. I've heard that you can catch a glimpse

of him when they're in the collector's museum

earlier in the movie Yeah, I didn't see that

but I didn't either I thought I saw better a

bill or I thought I saw a cape that looks very

much like Thor's cape yeah, there is a there

is an unconfirmed one out there that people's

you know saw something with brown skin and a

red cape and you know somebody even claimed they

saw a hammer or anything and something but Obviously,

that's that's one for the blue rays to kind of

just pause and look around, you know, I feel

like they knew that and they just like, OK, people

are going to be like, oh, they did. Yeah. I think

not just for nip slips. To put it bluntly. But

yeah, James Gunn said that they they purposely

put things in those boxes. He said every single

one of them is a. Like an allusion to something.

It's a it's a callback to something and like

some of the other ones I guess there was a Chitauri

shoulder soldier in the one There was a dark

elf in one of them to you. I believe yeah, I

did see that that one was that was like the one

Case that she was cleaning was a dark elf. So

yeah, and then of course some Adam Warlock's

cocoon. Yeah was in there and then went at the

end when you see a you know the museum in ruins

after the explosion the cocoon is split open

and there's nothing inside so uh we were left

to presume that adam warlock is out you know

somewhere in the galaxy so and i would love them

to get out adam warlock or i mean there's so

many great cosmic characters that they could

do because wasn't adam warlock a part of the

guardians of galaxy yes yeah he was Yeah, there's

a few characters that they left off the team

actually like Warlock and Quasar. Mantis, I think

was like a reserve member whatever you want to

call it But and they brought Zandu who was from

the original who was Michael Walker's character

who we didn't know Yondu or sorry But I thought

his I thought he was awesome I loved his character

and his little cool weapon. That was pretty cool

So oh, yeah the trick arrow which which is from

the comics too That's a little bit of a East

dragon of itself and how his little mohawk load

when he was controlling it and stuff. Yeah But

yeah, that was pretty cool how they did that

they were playing with some stuff there with

like Star Lord's father and I don't know if you

remembered like when You know when he's given

the fake orb and they kind of took off and they're

like, oh, you know Glad we didn't you know return

like to his father. Like we said we were gonna

the other guys like yeah, that guy was an asshole.

I Don't know if they're If they're gonna change

that from the comics a little bit and try to

make yon do his father. I don't know if that's

what they're going for or not but that's I didn't

get that vibe at all it's because like he you

know like just the fact that he like never kills

him like he just threatens to and then he's like

oh you know you know you're my guy I knew it

all along and then like not that I support this

but it's just that it's a possibility but and

then like when he opens the orb and there's just

a little troll in there he's he's not mad at

all he actually smiles and laughs when he Opens

that so that was kind of funny Which some people

were saying was a reference may have been a reference

to pip the troll Yeah, that could be yeah But

also that they are just they were very big back

in the 80s. So There's one other one of their

Easter egg I want to mention and this is one

that I didn't pick up on but I read about later

the first planet that we see Where Star Lord

like picks up the orb? The planet was called

Morag, and that was actually the name of the

first leader of the Kree from the comics. OK.

So they did a little little callback there. I

did not pick up on that at all. And there was

a few more. I know, like the Ronin's of people

who flew Ronin ships, that those creatures are

actually from Planet Hulk. They were like, yeah,

the Sicarians or whatever. Yeah. Yeah. So there's

there's a lot. I mean, they definitely took a

lot from different a lot of the cosmic universe.

So and there's so much in the Marvel cosmic universe

you can play with. So very neat. Anything else?

Yeah, I just wanted to talk about the the gems

for a little bit in this whole Infinity Gaunt

thing. I'll try to keep it short because I could

literally ramble about this for days. But I know

there's there's. probably a lot of people that

are getting confused and not familiar with the

comics and everything. And I've been seeing honestly,

and this annoys the crap out of me, but everybody

online now is a Thanos expert and like, oh, yeah,

he did that in the comics, you know, and he,

you know, he collected all eight gems and I'm

like, dude, shut up. You don't even know what

you're talking about. I just thought I wanted

to kind of straighten out the way I've seen it

kind of shaping up already I know obviously they've

revealed like the infinity stones in some of

the prior movies there's these powerful artifacts

that all these villains seem to be going cuckoo

for so obviously these are the infinity gems

from the infinity gauntlet story and when you

assemble them to a gauntlet it gives you this

ridiculous power over everything And each one

of them represents a different power. It's not

just everyone has the same power or something.

Everything is a different aspect. And I know

a lot of people have been saying, like, for some

reason, they're like, oh, we've been we've been

shown for infinity gems. And I got to disagree

with this. I think it's we've only seen three

of them. And obviously, the first one was the

Tesseract from the Avengers. And. Kevin Fagy

or however you pronounce his name. Yeah, Fage

because it rhymes with beige, but I don't know

He was known it as coming out online and saying

the test react was in fact the space gem because

it transported the Chitauri army across the entire

galaxy or universe, you know in an instant and

they make several references to it being a gateway

and like a portal so that was undoubtedly the

space gem and You know and then in Thor the Dark

World we see another stone where they refer to

it as the ether and For a time I was hearing

a lot online that this was supposed to be the

power gem Because the power gem was read in the

comics but as we know now that they're not following

the same color scheme as the comics and Which

is kind of confusing Because I went back and

I was looking at all the different colors and

it wasn't matching up at all So they're kind

of doing their own thing there, but we find out

later that the ether from Thor 2 was actually

the reality gem and Malekith was using it to

destroy all the realities at once at least he

was trying to and Of course, then we see the

purple stone from Guardians of the Galaxy and

this is in fact the power gem because they they

make several references of that in the movie

and now you can you know, destroy an entire planet

with it and everything. And if you have it with

the other ones, it's going to boost the power

of the other gems too, which is pretty crazy,

scary. But the fourth one that people were talking

about was Loki's staff. And they were saying

that that's the mind gem, because he would touch

it too, like, you know, he touched it to Hawkeye

and a couple other people, he touched them in

the chest and it would make them basically serve

him blindly, you know, it would sway their mind

to serve him. But I got to take exception with

that because they mentioned in Avengers a few

times that his staff is powered by the cube,

by the Tesseract. And honestly, I don't think

Thanos would have just given Loki an Infinity

Stone and say, yeah, you know, go do this because

he, you know, Loki's too tricky. He would have

tried to do something back to Thanos. So I don't

see that at all. And the fact that, you know,

Lady Sif and Volstagg took the Aether to the

collector and he said, where's the other one?

Instead of, you know, where are the other two?

So there was only, there were only two known

at that time. And they obviously they left the

Tesseract on Asgard and they said they didn't

want to keep the two of them that close together.

So. It's my humble opinion that we've only had

three revealed so far But it raises a lot of

questions, you know, like Does Thanos already

have one? You know, or doesn't he have any yet?

Yeah, that's very true So is the gauntlet like

a separate thing or does that like just combine

when you forget them all or whatever? Like you

might get the gauntlet comes free with five It's

like a BOGO thing like you you know, you buy

the six gems you get the gauntlet free Now they

got all the gauntlet was with Stanis's glove.

OK. And he just affixed the stones to his glove.

He just got his hot glue gun out and went to

town. Yeah, you know. He dazzled his glove. He

stopped at Hobby Lobby. He took a little hover

around there and. picked up some gems. Well,

for like the big bad of Marvel, we have basically

made him into like an elderly man. He likes to

bedazzle things. So yeah, sorry about that. But

it's it's just funny, like and I'm thinking about

like all the all the possibilities of this. And

this is what's so fun about these these stories

tying in and intertwining and everything. Like

to me, the collector doesn't have Like anything

to do with Thanos is playing like I think the

collector wants him for himself. Oh, yeah I agree

like he I mean he's the collector and there's

only six of these things in the universe. So

he wants all six It's one of the rarest things

in the universe and you know for a while there

he had two of them in his shop He had quite a

pair of stones But you know he then he lost one

so that's you know, that's always tragic when

you lose one Lance Armstrong can relate. Yeah,

yeah. But I mean, it raises a lot of questions.

Does Thanos know the power of each one or does

he just know that they are powerful and he wants

them all? Does he want to get one or two of them

and then use them to get the others like he did

in the comics? How deep does his strategy go?

Stuff like that. I can see this being like he's

just wanting he this he's using this as an experiment

to see what they do Yeah, like oh, you know,

I'll let him use it and then see how it actually

operates in that way. I'm not Risking anything

like I think I could see that being his huge

ploy where he's just like, well, this is my test

run I'm getting some pregame film before I start

doing it myself. He's like the Peyton Manning

of the Marvel universe a lot of game study, but

To me, I mean I'll run this by you guys see what

you think but to me I can definitely see Thanos

Totally anticipating that Ronan did what he did

Basically try it like I got the gem now. What

do I need you for? I could see Thanos totally

anticipating that happening and Now the gem is

on Xandar with the Nova core. He knows right

where it is This might be a stretch, but it's

something that I would kind of like to see even

though I don't promote genocide, but I think

I think Thanos maybe would go and destroy Xandar

and then for lucky The only survivor is Richard

Ryder and he becomes Nova Prime. Yeah, that's

a bit of a stretch But I know like my point is

like I could see Thanos anticipating like the

way all this stuff went down You know, he knows

people would betray him. He knows exactly where

they are now and I think it's all being laid

out his plan and I think in the The Guardian

sequel, I think they're gonna set that up even

more Maybe even like Doctor Strange or something

like that Yeah, I can definitely see that. Alright,

anything else on Guardians or Morbo properties

as a whole? Nah, I've been talking way too long,

so you better shut me up. We gotta turn off the

Infinity Gauntlet or Chuck will not stop. I gotta

take it off. Exactly, exactly. Alright, we're

gonna return to our unknown saga. We've taken

a week off and we're bringing it back with episode

6, Rock in a Hard Place. Garrett Wright is alive,

even though I've run him through. On top of that,

he looks like a moving stone statue. I grab for

my sword, and that is when I realize that it's

sticking out of the gut of that stone monstrosity.

Ooh, this looks like it might be a little rough.

All right, Wright, before you do anything, I

just want you to know that I didn't mean to kill

you. It was an accident. It's throttling time!

Apparently talking to him is out of the question.

Somebody get the number of that truck? A literal

boulder of a fist just pushed me through a wall

and has broken some of my ribs. Thankfully, it

moves as slow as a grandma with arthritis. Its

bulk gives me some time to recover and catch

my breath. I know break time is over when drywall

sprays out onto the floor. I grit my teeth against

the pain as I get up. It takes another slow swing

at me, but I manage to swerve out of the way.

I make my way back to the lab table with all

the chemicals on it. I grab a beaker and hope

it contains a volatile chemical. Garrett once

again thunders into the room and I toss the beaker

straight into his eyes. Luck must have been on

my side. I picked the correct beaker, but I needed

to take advantage of the situation. I went for

the handle of my sword stuck in its gut and I

pulled. To no avail. Put your back into it! Shut

up, you ghoul. Can't you see I'm busy? The creature

that was Garrett Wright lashes out, swinging

his massive boulder fists at me. I swing and

duck, at the same time kicking at the handle

of my sword trying to loosen it. It barely moves

at all. At this rate, you're going to be at this

the whole night, and we don't have time. We have

other places to be this evening. Well, if you

had some helpful advice for once. Then maybe

I wouldn't be taking up the dead guy's precious

time. All you keep doing is yanking on your handle.

Why don't you try things from another perspective?

Tiny rocks chip off the beast as he demolishes

the lab table in front of me. I'm inches from

being dead like you and you're making masturbation

jokes. What the heck is wrong with you? Then

the ghoul's advice sinks in. I need something

big and hard. And you're the one berating me

for the masturbation jokes. If I ever get an

opportunity to kill you, I am taking it. I hope

you do get that opportunity. Let's see, there's

that huge iron paperweight over on the teacher's

desk. Thank you. I run over and grab the paperweight

just before it is batted out of the way by Garrett.

I end up taking the tail into the swing and I

drop the paperweight, sending it skidding on

the floor. My arm is out of its socket thanks

to the hit. I slide on the floor, skating right

over to the paperweight. Before I can pick it

up, I slam my shoulder into the edge of the desk,

putting the bone back into its joint. I shovel

the weight into my arms, making sure my grip

is tight on it, and I run straight into the beast.

At the last second I slide in between its legs

like a baseball player stealing a base I end

up right behind the thing the point of my sword

looking up at me like an accusing finger I Lug

the weight back strike it against the point of

my sword sending up a spark and the sword goes

flying out the other side Looks like we've struck

oil boy The rock man has indeed sprung a leak

His thick blood was pooling on the floor from

its wound. It becomes even more sluggish as it

still tries to lash out. With a final swing,

it becomes as still as an ordinary rock resting

on the floor. Well, that was easy. And it took

you long enough! For you, maybe. But I like to

get stuff done on my own time. I pick up my sword

from the pool of blackness, and I look at the

tip. covered in blood and gnarled from the paperweight

strike. Even my sword did more work than you.

Now I have to figure out how to fix it. Actually,

I think I know someone who can help you out.

I needed to drop something off to him anyway.

Now hurry up. Well, we hope you enjoyed episode

six of unknown rock in a hard place. Yeah, I

had to do a lot of work that and Very much appreciated

to Greg and Chuck there, but I hope you guys

been enjoying that Well, we'll have plenty more

of unknown for you. I seem like people are enjoying

it. So that's good to see but anything else before

we bring this episode to a close I know Greg

you had one little thing you wanted to mention

regarding how you can support the Deadpool movie.

Yeah I actually found out, I should have mentioned

this during the Twitter rant at the beginning,

but I found out that if you actually follow the

writer -director of the movie on Twitter, he

sent out a tweet saying that he's trying to get

people to favorite his one comment to show...

the people, the bigwigs in Hollywood, that people

would actually enjoy a Deadpool movie, so to

favorite his one statement, so we could get him

out of production hell, quote unquote. And I

believe his, hold on, I'm still stuck on Emily

Radajkowski here, let me back up. Save that for

later Talk about a rock in a hard place I wrote

those masturbation jokes while I was uh, we didn't

want to know It's not what you use the infinity

gauntlet for I'm trying to find it. Sorry. I'm

new to Twitter. It's taking me a while to find

I think it was Rhett Reese. Yeah, it's at Rhett

Reese R -h -e -t -t -r -e -e -s -e So if you

go to that there's one that says Team Deadpool

needs your official vote of support. Let's break

the internet retweet if you would buy a ticket

to the Deadpool movie So you can also find that

at my Twitter account, which I'm hanging out

at the create Forge That's right at the create

with us and also leave us iTunes reviews They

we've gotten a few so far. Love those There's

a huge truly appreciate that any rating or review

from one stars to five and get go with what you

feel so but And I'm not on Twitter, so you can

find me at nowhere. Yeah, I should maybe I should

just do that spill out of nowhere Might be taken

but there yeah, actually I found myself enjoying

actually right It's probably my favorite of all

different like social if you don't even call

that social media and then Twitter Actually Facebook

reddit is just stalking media. Yeah Stalking

cool things media. Yeah, it kind of does all

the hard work for you That'll bring us to the

end of this episode. We'll be back next week,

same time, same channel, same podcast feed. But

for now, this has been Chuck. This has been Greg,

or I am Groot. And this has been Dan, and we've

been talking in circles. We will see you next

week. We are Groot. We are through if we are

her family here on this podcast. We are grouped

I so so I thought it was rather hilarious where

you have he's very much like a dog and you see

him lose his arms He's like looking down. It's

like so sad I like it when he's bouncing the

guys off that tunnel and he's just going really

like the whole Obsessive with it. Yeah, then

he turns around and he looks at everybody. He's

got this giant smile on his face It's serious

sir I did something good, right? You had a treat?

Yeah, he was great. He was fantastic. I like

when he was... Star -Lord's like, oh, see Groot's

the only one that knows what's going on. He's

like eating a leaf off his shoulder.
