X-Men Franchise Deep Dive and Days of Future Past Review

podcast that's present, past, and future. This

week we have an episode kind of dedicated to

the X -Men with the recent release of X -Men

Days of Future Past. But before we get to all

that, how's the week been going for you guys?

Pretty interesting. First during the week, I

was sent a link by someone to this thing called

an ostrich pillow. Have you guys heard about

this? No, is that like some kinky club or something?

No, it's actually this... It's this soft, like,

pillow thing that goes over your head. And it's

for taking naps. Oh, yeah. It is the it's the

dumbest thing ever. It looks ridiculous. It's

gray. It's got two like it's got a hole for your

head. You put it over like a hood and it's got

holes for your hands like that kind of go in

the top. But the funny thing is, when you're

wearing it, when you're sitting up, you kind

of look like a hammerhead shark. Yeah, and it's

they're just there's pictures of people taking

naps with this thing on and it's just it's ridiculous

I'm like really this is the pinnacle of our inventive

minds like coming up with this thing I want to

see the guy who has that on and the snuggie at

the same time and it's just like the epitome

of humankind I know the epitome of laziness put

somebody in there that is very claustrophobic

and just watch them freak out You can put it

on storm Yep, there you go. Yeah, see they never

really touched upon that within the X -Men franchise,

but I guess you know Less storm the better usually

when it comes to these movies Greg. How's your

week been going? All right, I've been working

a lot, but I've also been recovering from a back

injury I woke up the one morning. I don't know

what the hell I did to my back but I like bent

over to pet the dog. And then I got back up again

and went to my room to go get dressed and everything.

And yeah, I bent over to pull up my shorts and

I could not get up. Like I was just a giant number

seven. Yeah. And so I'm like, I can't get back

up straight. That sounds like a personal problem,

but it isn't. Well, kind of, but not that way.

So then I had to like, didn't know what to do

so I kind of panicked and I opened my door and

I like walked out my door still bent over and

I walked into my parents room and I like stuck

my head in it looked like I was trying to be

careful not to wake them up but I really didn't

care because I wanted them up and like my dad

was like apparently lightly up so he kind of

opened his eyes when I stuck my head in so he's

probably like What the hell is going on and then

I came the rest of the way like I kind of need

help He's like what's what I'm like, I can't

I can't get up. I Eventually ended up at the

chiropractors and I'm much better today. Let

me tell you Wow, let's get the here at least

When you listen to that song too much gotta gotta

get up get down I had no problem getting down,

but getting up was the issue, apparently. Play

it backwards. So now you're just a, you know,

you went from the number seven to a straight

number one. So there you go. Yep, I'm number

one. What have you been up to, Dan? Hopefully

it's better than me. Yeah, I went to this little

thing called Flavor Fast. We go every Memorial

Day weekend. It takes place in this Renaissance

Fair outside of Philadelphia. and it's a huge

wine festival so it's really great because it's

like two bucks you get a glass and then there's

like 50 wineries you go around and tasting wine

and we ended up coming home with like 22 bottles

of wine which is a wreckage for us but it's usually

where we get our wine for the for the year and

then we stocked up and so we have tons and tons

of wine and probably my personal favorite which

i got which was uh jalapeno wine I'm not gonna

lie. I kind of got for the novelty of it, but

it tastes interesting It's like a whiskey flavor

almost and just how much he comes off of it.

So But yeah, but you gotta upgrade your uh your

status You can't come home with just 22 bottles.

You have to come home with multiple cases of

wine like my family does See, this is just two

people though, you know Well, it's it's usually

me my mom and my dad and we'll get like Probably

about six cases We got one case for this one

place that sold mostly fruit wine and we got

like three bottles of this cotton candy wine

Which was pretty pretty good. Like it's you can't

drink too much of it because it's so sweet, but

it's it's pretty good Yeah, I'm on the sweet

side of wines too. Like you guys I mean, I'm

not a huge wine drinker. It's more I mean I do

enjoy it but Anyways, the other thing I did this

weekend, you were talking about the whole back

thing, and not that this relates in any way,

but my wife and I started watching the show Hannibal,

and the reason I'm talking about it is we watched

a particular little, you know, suspenseful episode,

and it was right where we were going to bed.

We finally ended up going to bed, and we're laying

in bed, and I'm like, did we lock the door? Because

I'm like, I'm not sure if we locked the door.

And Carol's like, all right, I'm going to go

out and check. And then our apartment's really

dark. And she's like, you know what? I'm not

going to do it. You go. Just because she just

got done watching that scary show. It's like,

you go. I'm like, all right. So I go and lock

the door, coming back. The part of the episode

was there was this really creepy lady who was

hiding underneath beds and jumping out at people.

So what I did, knowing that Carol was already

kind of on edge, I walked into her bedroom, you

know, got down onto the floor, walking over and

then like I lean slowly leaned up on top of the

bed and like reaching out when it was kind of

dark. And she freaked the f out. She like screams

out. She's like, Dan, but she was yelling at

me to like stop the person not realizing it was

actually me causing it. she went crazy and then

felt really bad but it was effective so that's

hilarious and then dan had to go sleep on the

couch yeah no luckily she uh she got over it

she was like oh i'll freaked out about it and

she was like sleeping two two minutes later so

i think half of the issue was that she was half

asleep but i got i got a lot of laughs out of

it now you just have to watch your back for revenge

i know i know I'm sure it's coming. But anyways,

like I mentioned in the beginning, we're going

to be talking about the X -Men, Days of Future

Past, the franchise as a whole. So I thought

we would start with, we've done a lot of different

comic book related things and we've talked about

how much we liked the X -Men. So just talk about

kind of how we got into the X -Men in general

and what led us to becoming fans of it. So Greg

and Chuck, I'm assuming we have similar stories

here, but Greg, what kind of got you first initially

into? you know the children of the atom well

when i first started off reading comics i'm going

to go back even a little bit further um i kind

of got into spider -man first and i got into

marvel comics and that was um thanks to my uh

next door neighbor i started reading the spider

-man stuff and then after a while i'm like this

is kind of emo and everything and i wasn't enjoying

it too much and and then i remembered about watching

the X -Men animated series and how I really liked

that and then I don't remember what the first

issue I got was but I started just reading X

-Men from the animated series and then my next

-door neighbor pulled me into the comic book

world and so then I started reading X -Men comics

kind of based off of those two things and But

I think I think it was a Jim Lee cover that maybe

first attracted me I don't I don't really remember

because as we all know that if listen to this

podcast my memory is Awful, so maybe halfway

through the episode. I'll be like, oh, oh, it

was this You're just gonna yell out X -Men number

104. What are you talking about? You're like,

I don't even remember It's just that was on my

tip of my tongue. Yeah So, but I got really into

it and I've really started trying to collect

the whole uncanny X -Men series, which is started

off as X -Men. It was the first issue of X -Men

is X -Men number one, as we all know. Yeah, and

I know, Chuck, I think you have kind of have

a similar story. So what kind of got you into

the to the X -Men? Well, I never actually really

read comics when I was a kid. I did. Watch the

cartoons and mainly like the spider -man and

x -men cartoons in the 90s and I absolutely loved

those and Ironically, I didn't really get into

comics until I got older kind of like in high

school Blasphemous, I know I'm kind of doing

it backwards. You know, I was I was cool and

then I became a nerd All the way through hey

nerds are cool, you know, but uh, yeah, I guess

like once I kind of got into comics like I think

someone bought me a few and I was like oh yeah

that's cool you know maybe they'll be worth something

but then I actually started checking them out

and reading them and stuff and I really started

to like I got some X -Men issues and I just remembered

back to when I was a kid how like in the 90s

like especially the early 90s the X -Men were

huge they were everywhere you couldn't go to

Pizza Hut without seeing the X -Men everywhere.

They used to have them on the placemats and they

had X -Men arcade games back in the corner of

the Pizza Hut's and all this stuff. I think they

even did like exclusive Pizza Hut comic book

issues and stuff like that for X -Men. Yes I

have and I do have a few. I remember getting

them from like the quarter bin. Yeah. I remember

I even I think if I go to my back to my home

I would probably still have some of the like

classic Pizza Hut X -Men cups that they would

make for like the kids meal or whatever. Oh yeah,

those sound cool. I kind of started reading some

of the comics and I was like, this is really

cool. It reminds me a lot of my childhood and

it reminds me of that animated series, but in

a more expansive way. There's so many more characters,

more stories, so I just got wrapped up in it.

Like Greg said, the Jim Lee stuff, I'm not going

to lie, that art really pulled me in. Once I

got into that. Yeah, the Qbert stuff just incredible.

So that's that's kind of where my obsession started

Nice and i'm around the same as you check because

I didn't want to read a lot of comics as a kid

and my kind of introduction into the x -men came

mainly because of the saturday morning morning

cartoon show and also because of the Action figures.

I was really big into those growing up as a kid

and actually so I remember the first one that

I bought which was cable And a big reason why

was I was big into like GI Joe toys at the time

and then I was kind of starting Watching this

X -Men cartoon and then I saw an X -Men with

a gun like a GI Joe I'm like, this is like the

best of both worlds. So That kind of started

me off the path and my brother was also More

it was actually into comics more than I was and

so I kind of would read his he read a lot of

like image and Punisher and also the x -men and

I remember seeing the first like x -men cover

I think ever saw in person was a Jim Lee cover

and I forget the number of it. I think it's like

x -men 8 or 7 and what stuck out to my mind was

seeing Wolverine and he was smoking and you know

smoking is cool so I was like it's like smoking

meat like barbecuing is that what you're talking

about I just smoked today so I'm really cool

smoking actually oh so you're like Arby's you

smoke your meat for 13 hours No, I probably I

don't have an old man back there smoking a cigarette

and then putting out the cigarette butts into

the meat to cook it No, I don't do it that way.

Oh, then how does it get its flavor? That's amazing

It's it's also the guy is chewing spit and he

spits into the meat. That's how the flavor gets

into army's meat explains the juices Anyways,

so no, it was just it just caught my eye because

it's like a cartoon and smoking and not that

I thought it was necessarily cool, but it was

just kind of you know, it's this rebellious character

that's also a hero. So I kind of got into it,

and mostly, like I said, the action figures and

the cartoon. So, and then I eventually kind of

got into comics a little bit. And what really

got me into comics, Chuck, was actually you,

because you, I think my birthday, I forget what,

but you bought me this, because two of my favorite

characters were Deadpool and Cable. And you bought

me like the first graphic novel of Cable and

Deadpool. Oh, yeah, I forgot about that. So that

kind of I started reading that and then I wanted

to pick up more issues So we had this they now

will comic book store that was near us that we

would go to and kind of further and further into

it so I was reading a little bit before them

and that's when I got into it hardcore and I

expanded beyond the X -Men but What really started

for me was that the X -Men cartoon and some of

the comics so in 2000, you know, we had the first

X -Men movie and that was really the big superhero

movie that started at all. I mean, we had Blade

and we had Batman, but not necessarily a superhero

team coming to an actual big budget blockbuster.

Not necessarily a blockbuster compared to today.

I think if you look at the budget of the first

X -Men movie, it's about like half the catering

budget of the Avengers. But it was still, I remember

it being a big deal at the time. and then we

got more movies after that and so on. So before

we get to Days of Future Past, I just thought

about what we, as people who are fans of X -Men

in general, what we thought about the actual

franchise, the movie franchise of the X -Men.

Did any of you see the first X -Men in theaters?

Yeah, I think I saw it in theaters. No, I didn't

see the first one in theaters. I saw the second

one in theater, but the first one I think I saw

It was some time after it had come out Yeah,

I was the same way. I did not see in theaters.

I don't even know why I think I was actually

I know why I was away that summer I was on like

studying abroad that summer so I missed it came

back and I remember watching it and sitting it

down and finally seeing it and Watching the first

x -men and really not particularly loving it

all that much. I Honestly, I think I like it

more now than I did at the time Just because

I realized there wasn't like a lot of action

going on. There are a few standout moments, but

overall it's just kind of You know, there were

set pieces were few and far between So did you

guys enjoy the joy the first time you like it?

Do you still like it now? I honestly didn't really

care for it the like the first time I saw it

and it kind of It kind of left me disappointed.

It wasn't really the right feel that I was looking

for in the X -Men movie. It was like a totally

different feeling that I got from reading X -Men.

And I mean, I guess the worst thing was it was

just really corny in spots and, you know, stuff

like that. Sabretooth was kind of poorly done

and stuff like that. But it didn't have. Yeah.

It did have honestly, I think they just wanted

to hire the guy because his last name was Maine

It's what it's the same reason why they hire

Mark Webb to direct the Spider -Man movie exactly

But I did love Patrick Stewart as Xavier and

Ian McKellen and Hugh Jackman. I thought they

did a fantastic job casting that movie That I

was really excited about but I just thought like

Magneto's like evil master plan was kind of weak

and You know, they could have done that a little

better and overall I was I was disappointed but

like you did and I've I've grown to like it a

little more over the years Greg, what about you?

Well, I got so a lot of the same things that

Chuck had I Wouldn't say I was overly disappointed.

I was kind of like well, I guess this is good

as we're gonna get and I was like well it was

it was good for What it is, I agree with Chuck.

I really liked Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart,

and Hugh Jackman. I thought Halle Berry was good,

except for the line like Dan was saying before

with the, what happens when you hit a toad with

lightning, blah, blah, blah. You know what happens

when you hit a toad with lightning? A horrible,

horrible line. The worst thing ever yeah, not

to mention her accident that is awful It's I

didn't even realize it at the time, but she is

trying to give like an African accent and it

is yeah, it's so bad She does look good. She

does look good for the part though. Yeah, I do

think she gets better in the role yeah movies

go on and I thought Femke Jensen was freaking

gorgeous as Jean Grey otherwise didn't really

live up to my expectations but I thought this

is as good as we're gonna get so I kind of accepted

it for what it is there were a lot of things

I didn't care about it I don't think my feelings

on it have really changed too too much I do find

it kind of slow anymore back in the day I don't

think I found it that slow but now I kind of

think it's a little slow but I haven't seen it

in probably years now so Yeah, actually a week

or two ago I re -watched all the X -Men movies

except for the Wolverine movies. And re -watching

it, I noticed a few things. For one, on the positive

side, it explains the X -Men universe really

effectively and really quickly. It really like

establishes the rules of the universe, you know,

what mutants are and all that really well. It's

just the exposition makes sense within the movie

and it kind of sets it up for people who aren't

even fans of the X -Men. And I think a lot of

the relationships are strong like the one between

Wolverine and rogue, you know It is basically

the same thing. We see Wolverine do a lot with

some reason he has a thing for having You know

can ship with young teenage girls with whether

it be shadow cat or Jubilee or what have you?

But I think it's there is a reason it's because

you have this rugged, you know rebellious Person

who needs someone like a rogue to kind of soften

him up a little bit not that sounded awful It's

supposed to make them hard what But it's yeah,

they don't do it in a weird way though. It's

just like it's more of a fatherly You know type

of our bigger brother type of thing There's no

like romantic and that kinship between them at

all. Yeah, and like if for all his like rage

and badassness. You see there's like a really

good guy underneath there. Yeah, and I do think

a lot of the casting works. You know, Patrick

Stewart, Ian McKellen, Hugh Jackman. Some of

them don't work all that well. Mostly Sabretooth

is pretty awful. Well, he's not given much to

do. And some of the action doesn't hold up, like

I mentioned, like the final set piece on top

of the Statue of Liberty? Statue of Liberty.

It looks really awful today. It looks like it's

a TV pilot, not necessarily a movie. Not even

a good TV pilot, just with the special effects.

But like I mentioned, the budget was really tiny.

But I think with a small budget, it had to be

creative and had to really more focus on the

characters, which I think is great. Because I

think that's the best thing that's been... about

the x -men even more so than the avengers is

that 13 dynamic there's more there and you know

they kind of interact better but i know for the

second x -men chuck you saw in theaters because

i know we saw it in theaters together way back

in high school uh ages ago man it's like 12 years

ago that's crazy yeah i was not there yeah in

spirit but I remember the trailers for x2 being

so excited for so amped up and Not being disappointed

and like loving it. I remember the opening sequence

with nightcrawler not that not to steal everything

So you guys have nothing to talk about it, but

I loved x2 for a huge amount of time For a great

deal time for me. It was the best Superhero movie

bar none. I was in my top ten favorite movies

for a great deal. So no disappointments there

Chuck, what were your opinions on X2 then and

now? Well, I think through the whole span, I've

loved that one. Possibly the best. I'll leave

a little ambiguity there for later on, but I

absolutely loved it from the first moment I saw

it. And even like that tone I was talking about

that I didn't get from the first one, I totally

got it from this one. It's like, yeah, this is

this is the X -Men universe. Like this is this

is really cool. Like you said, the Nightcrawler

scene from the very beginning, it was a home

run. and it just took off from there. It was

written really well. The whole striker thing

and the X -Men and the Brotherhood kind of forming

a loose partnership to team up against him and

everything. And I know, Dan, you've said this

before and I wanted to point it out, but Brian

Cox did an awesome job in that movie and he made

a terrific villain. Honestly, I think one of

the best we've seen in a comic movie and I don't

think he gets the credit that he deserves. Yeah,

I 100 % agree. I mean, he's just this normal,

everyday soldier guy, and he's going up against

the entire team. And you believe it just because

of his performance that he can hold with Owen

against McKellen and Stewart. So yeah. And you

see his you see his obsession to like with how

he hates mutants because it's a reflection of

what his son has become and all this stuff. And

then just going on, you see like a lot more mutants

in this movie that they kind of added. And that

was fun to see. And I know we're going to get

into a little bit later on, but there's so many

geek moments in this in the second X -Men movie.

It was unbelievable. Very nice. Greg, what were

your thoughts? I think where Brian Cox was awesome,

I think the other villain in the movie, well,

villainess is kind of false flat with Lady Death

Strike. I didn't think she was. Great as you've

seen her in the the comics. She's a lot more

boisterous in the comics a lot more loud Kind

of like the animated stuff with her in it. She's

like screaming like a giant asshole as she fights.

That's how I always kind of picture But I actually

would see a picture of a giant asshole screaming

With adamantium too. Like Chuck said, this one

was definitely a lot better and I definitely

like this one a whole hell of a lot more than

the first one. It definitely breaks the whole

sequel situation of that the sequel is usually

worse than the original. I thought this one was

definitely improvement and you could definitely

you could definitely get the x -men vibe off

of off of this one oh by the way i i never enjoyed

those black costumes that they had i never really

enjoy those costumes those are always kind of

disappointing for me watching the x -men movies

they're very matrix -esque in a way i guess maybe

at that time they're a little bit hesitant like

you're doing this for a superhero movie and You're

gonna try to make them a little bit more easier

to digest. So yeah, I guess they they didn't

want to go too corny because uh, you know you

look at like Batman or robin and stuff like that

when that came out in batman forever and just

how corny they looked so maybe they wanted to

stay away from that and Kind of have more tactical

Approach to it or something like that Yeah, I

still think there would have been a better choice

than those leather costumes though Brian Cox

likes I'm not Brian Cox, but uh, Brian Singer

likes the leather. What are you gonna? I guess

I don't know He likes the bondage And that brings

us to x -men 3 the last stand well, which was

supposed to be the last x -men movie Of course

that didn't happen because they want to keep

their rights and all that good stuff But I remember

one of the the best things about x -men 2 was

like wow This leads up to so much thinking of

the potential of where it could go then finding

out that Bryan Singer is not gonna be directing

they're bringing in Brett Ratner and all this

other stuff and Seeing x3 for the first time

after the theater Actually, I think we even saw

this one. I don't know if we I think we all saw

this at the same time I don't know it all I think

we did I think it all kind of goes together Seeing

this in the theater for the first time and walking

out and I think Either it was just my inability

to not like it, but I think overall I was like,

okay, I saw huge issues, but I still liked it.

More and more we watched it. The more I've seen

it, the more and more dumb I see in this movie.

There are still things I like. Like I said, we

watching it a few weeks ago. There are some good,

well executed action sequences. I think it probably

has the most action out of any of the X -Men

movies. Maybe not the best action, but it has

the most. Did like Kelsey Graham as beast and

some of the other decisions, but there were some

huge gigantic dumb things that they did Starting

with the juggernaut how they what they did with

Patrick Stewart, you know, it's just aggravating

to say the least Greg, what are your thoughts

on X -Men 3 the Last Stand? Overall is a giant

turd of a movie There yes in the corner bucket

of Anne Frank's Attic, but there were there were

definitely some good parts and I agreed juggernaut

was awful I liked Kelsey Grammer as beast, but

I Really didn't care for the makeup too much.

She kind of just reminded me of a Muppet for

the most part I definitely rather the makeup

now that they have for Beast, even though I did

not like the Jerry curls or whatever the hell

was going on in Days of Future Past. But anyway,

back to Last Stand. But some of the good parts

were like Wolverine coming up to kill gene gray

should i have thrown out a spoiler there it's

been a couple years i'm pretty sure people know

what's up but uh yeah screw them yeah uh we're

not ruining anything but the movie didn't already

ruin i thought that was pretty cool with the

the flesh being torn away from Wolverine as he

kept approaching her and i thought the cgi was

was pretty damn cool and the fact that you could

see his the adamantium on his rib cage and everything

i thought that was freaking awesome I thought

angels wings looked really good. I thought The

guy that played that role was was really awesome

I don't really care for what they did with it

through the storyline But I thought they that

care the the guy playing was pretty good And

I thought the makeup or CGI was really good for

him I don't think it's really that hard to mess

up a guy with wings, but so there was stuff like

that then you had other bad stuff like The crowds

of mutants were just kind of generic if you ask

me. There was nothing that really popped out

when it came to like all these mutants attacking.

They were just all these very generic and I think

they like did a couple of the same kind of mutant

too which was kind of weird. And they used like

real mutants like Psylocke and just didn't just

use the name. Yeah, didn't do anything with it.

Like this character, Psylocke, and what's her

power? We don't really know. She has a funny

haircut, and that's about it. Yeah. Yeah. And

then you got the puffer fish guy. Oh, man. Yeah.

And then Callisto, who kind of combined, like,

was it like a hodgepodge of a lot of different

characters? Pretty much all the Brotherhood Immutants

were rather generic. I will say, I like the guy

that... Wolverine kept cutting his arms off and

he kept growing them back and then Wolverine

kicked him in the nuts and was like yeah grow

them back But uh Jack what were your thoughts

on x -men 3 it was a definite drop -off after

x2 and I remember being very excited like you

said after x2 and Thinking like oh, it can only

get better from here. But man was I wrong I blame

I kind of blame Brett Ratner for a lot of it

just because He tried but you know Bryan Singer

was familiar with you know, he did the first

two movies and I think he had a better handle

on that universe, but you look at the things

they did wrong with it it's it's based on the

Dark Phoenix saga, which is one of the greatest

X -Men stories of all time and They got the gist

of it right with the team kind of having to sacrifice

Jean for the good of mankind. I get that they

used Wolverine to try to kill her instead of...

I think in the original story, they wanted Colossus

to kill her, but he pulled his punch and he couldn't

do it. I think Jean ended up... you know killing

herself or whatever but I think it made sense

to use Wolverine because it made sense within

this universe and like Greg said that scene was

just awesome where he's the only one that can

kind of overcome her power and he could heal

as fast as she was trying to rip him apart and

that was probably the highlight of the movie

for me that was like a really cool scene but

just so many other things wrong with it I may

mention a few later in the episode but some of

them I remember specifically the scene with Juggernaut

we're just like it was like a facepalm moment

you're like what the fuck like really um and

juggernaut i love juggernaut too like he's such

a cool character and when they mess up one of

your favorite characters like that it's uh it's

very deflating i'm the juggernaut bitch yeah

it's never a good idea to quote uh like a viral

video with one of your characters Uh, that's

pretty awful. That was yeah, that's a one of

the biggest lowlights of that film and just highly

treated I think cyclops of any character has

probably been given the shaft out of all these

movies, but Literally his death which was like

I remember in the entire movie thinking is he

coming back when they don't even show how you

died That's when you know, you're like being

treated like a piece of shit. Yeah It's like

the only thing that people care about you is

the sunglasses. So we're just going to show that

and that's about it He's like I'm gonna go stay

with Brett Ratner and go over do the Superman

movie That's pretty much what happened. So I

think they had him for a day and they're like,

alright and we're done who knows what happens

from there and then we had a little bit of a

break we'll skip the Wolverine movies because

kind of X -Men Days of Future Past kind of did

it anyway, so let's... We're very thankful that

we get to forget Wolverine Origins. May you rest

in peace. Yes, we'll take an Animaniac bullet

to the head and forget that ever happened. And

we'll get into kind of the reboot of the X -Men

trying to bring it back, and that was X -Men

First Class. And I remember when like that movie

was coming out and being wondering like if it

was ever gonna get made because Literally finished

casting like a day or two before I started shooting.

It was a really quick shooting schedule Did not

have a big budget. I think there was a bunch

of expectations with it going in I don't even

I think I didn't know what to expect But I remember

walking out and being blown away with what I

saw I had issues with certain things, but I would

I just loved so much about it Just loved the

treatment of the characters. I just felt like

it had everything I wanted in an X -Men movie

from the action set pieces to the acting to the

relationships like Fassbender McAvoy to me in

that one movie may have been even better than

Stewart and and McKellen, but I just I just ended

up loving that a great deal Chuck what were your

thoughts on X -Men first class? I really enjoyed

it. I thought it Definitely rejuvenated the franchise

after the turd that was the last stand but And

especially after X -Men origins. Oh, yeah, you

know I go downhill many further Yeah, that was

that was rock bottom and this definitely was

a good kickstart gave it a fresh start. Like

you said Yeah, First Class was great in a lot

of ways. I loved the close tie -in with the historical

events. I thought that was a really cool thing.

I love when they do that in movies. It kind of

makes it feel like you're there more. It feels

more realistic. But probably the most, the thing

that stands out the most to me in this was like

the acting and especially Fassbender, like you

mentioned, Dan. He nailed that persona, in my

opinion. And I love seeing the early relationship,

the early friendship of Xavier and Magneto. Even

though you know what they will become they're

gonna be enemies in the future It was nice to

see and see how they interact and stuff like

that and the scene on the beach With the bullet

hitting Xavier. I thought it was really well

done You could you could just see the two opposing

ideals and you realize that there was no There

was no way to like make amends between these

two they were just too far apart There was no

changing Magneto's mind And also the way he took

out Sebastian Shaw was freaking sweet. Oh, yeah.

That was so awesome. That was really, really

cool scene. And the scene, too, with Magneto

in the bar in South America, wherever he was

with the knife, sticks it in the guy's hand.

I think it's Argentina. I'm not sure. Yeah, this

fastbender just did an awesome job. That was

one of my favorite acting jobs in the whole franchise.

And I love the. They had like a Magneto theme

in that, that was just perfect for that character

and I think they used it appropriately. Usually

the X -Men franchise's scores haven't been anything

fantastic, but I always loved that theme that

would play. Oh yeah, you're right. Yeah, I forgot

about that. Greg, what were your thoughts on

X -Men First Class? You guys essentially just

talked about everything that I just wanted to

talk about. I actually have the Magneto theme

song. I actually have that. I bought it off of

iTunes. I love that thing so much. Yeah, that

is cool. But I think one of the things that you

guys didn't talk about that I really enjoyed

is they were kind of going for a James Bond 70s

feel. Going on for that movie. I think they nailed

that completely and I just think it gave it Not

really an x -men feel I think the characters

gave it that but I thought the Backgrounds and

everything gave it a little extra more it gave

a really cool extra vibe To the feeling of the

x -men. I thought I thought that was really cool.

Yeah I didn't care for January Jones too much

as Emma Frost, but I think that's because of

around that time there was a whole story of her

eating her child's placenta or something when

she gave birth. Yeah, so normally I would have

been like, all right, sexy, but after I heard

that, it gave me the wrong vibe going in. She

and she was a late casting choice too. I think

it's supposed to be like Eva Green who was like

in Star Trek into darkness, but January Jones

got cast and yeah, I think she was probably the

worst thing about that movie. She just was so

flat and Unemotional so I was really surprised

by Kevin Bacon. I wasn't expecting a lot out

of him I have I've never really watched a lot

of his stuff. I just know kind of like footloose

and how kind of I don't know that movie Not really

a guy type of movie, but a guy nerdy type of

movie, but So I wasn't expecting much out of

Kevin Bacon. I thought he did really good with

the role even though he doesn't really He doesn't

really give me that that look of a Sebastian

Shaw No, he was like you talked about James Bond

He was very much in the mold of a James Bond

villain even like his henchmen like he literally

just had henchmen that didn't do much except

take out people here and there. And I love Zazel.

He didn't like say anything, but I think they

use him effectively, especially in the one scene

where he's like picking up guys in the sky and

just dropping them. Yeah, that was pretty awesome.

I'm like, that's pretty badass. It's like seeing

Nightcrawler if he went crazy, like the Age of

Apocalypse Nightcrawler. That was a lot of fun.

And there are so many standout sequences in that.

Some of the X -Men characters aren't fantastic.

I do think they're used at least effectively.

Even like how they did a Shaw's absorbing powers.

I thought that was pretty cool like the stuff

at the grenade and then the In the nuclear sub

and stuff like that the ways of absorbing stuff.

I thought that was a really cool way that they

did that He looked really bad with the magneto

helmet. It kind of gave him a pink face his nose.

It was weird Well, he is bacon. So yeah and that

kind of brings us to the next thing just thinking

about the best moments and the worst moments

and And the reason I'm thinking Batman was because

X -Men First Class probably has my all -time

favorite moment within an X -Men franchise. And

it's not an action sequence. It's actually just

a small sequence between two characters and through

Xavier and Eric Lencher at the time, because

he didn't become Magneto yet, when Magneto is

trying to move the satellite. And you see there's

a conversation between James McTavoy and Mike

Fassbender. I just love how that scene plays

out. And basically, you have him get... access

to a memory and then you see like Fassbender

really sell that moment and it's just the camera

stays on Fassbender's face as you see it like

it just sold me on him as that character and

I think it means a lot between Magneto and Xavier

have a moment like that because it means it gives

something meaning when you see them kind of have

to split apart that you can actually see there

was a bond between them so that that to me was

just an unexpected event that happened because

you know you expect the action you expect stuff

the humor To have like two actors get the opportunity

to kind of show their stuff. I know that's always

set out to me Do you guys have other favorite

moments? They actually they actually went indoors

and cuddled after that they might have they might

have naked and they cuddled Good luck getting

rid of that image That was a memory I didn't

even know I had Well besides the idea of Naked

Fassbender and Naked McCoy cuddling, do you have

any other films that stuck out for you? The one

that's sticking out to me a lot, and Chuck kind

of talked about it just a little bit, was from

last stand of that coin just going through his

head going through Kevin Bacon's head and kind

of switching back and forth between Kevin Bacon

and Sebastian Shaw and Xavier and showing that

not only is Magneto destroying Shaw, but he's

also destroying his relationship with Charles

Xavier at that exact moment like the switching

back and forth and kind of the coin, kind of

seeing how it's going through Shaw's head. And

you could just kind of picture it as they go

back to Xavier. You could kind of picture it

going through his head while he's screaming.

I just thought that scene was really well done

and it looked very torturous. To Kevin Bacon,

even though he's frozen in just one spot I and

the music going along with it I that that was

one of the greater moments in even cinema for

me. So Chuck what about you? Oh Well, I have

a few of them actually like the coin teen was

on my list. I like that a lot probably Really

close to the top for me is Nate crawlers Whitehouse

scene at the beginning of x2 um just how he just

takes out like 30 guys and just keeps teleporting

and like they're they're all shooting at him

and nobody can touch him that was so amazing

and it just set the tone for that movie from

the get -go it's really all we've seen of nightcrawler

so far and um i really like the power of teleportation

so i'm glad that when they did it they did it

right and it turned out really cool but uh another

one like really high on my list was actually

Magneto breaking out of the glass prison in X2.

That was so freaking cool. You have the guard

that comes in every day and then Mystique kind

of injects him with the metal and Magneto senses

the metal in his blood and he just rips it out

of him. He forms these three little balls and

just busts the glass apart in this whole place

and he forms one of them into a disk and just

like... hovers out of there with the other two

metal things like just swirling around him. And

I know people have commented too about how he

crossed his arms. It was really corny there.

But to me, that was like his sign of superiority.

It's just like, you know, how did you think this

was going to keep me that long? You know, it

was just his kind of asserting his his power.

I thought that was really, really cool scene.

And then some like some smaller ones. um see

an iceman kind of ice up and beat pyro in x2

you really see him like turn into a real iceman

like all the way through a solid ice that was

just a cool little geek moment wolverine's berserker

rage in the mansion oh yeah in x2 that was really

cool that's something i know at the time fans

have been looking for that you know it's like

when are we going to see wolverine just freak

out you know and to show how badass he is and

i think that was Probably one of his defining

moments as far as that goes and I really really

enjoyed that I like that whole sequence of just

the house invasion and you get like little glimpses

of Shadowcat and Colossus and I thought that

was really well executed overall. Yeah, definitely

And then you have Even at the end of that movie

Xavier kind of sensing that gene is still alive.

I remember for some reason kind of getting goosebumps

at that scene like you know because it was so

powerful that you know when she died like it

affected the whole team so greatly but you could

tell Xavier's such a strong telepath and Jean

was such a strong telepath that they kind of

still have this link and he knows that she's

not completely dead and that that just kind of

a shiver up my spine that was a really cool moment

and then you have like uh lastly probably in

x -men 3 The danger of sequence and especially

the fastball special between you know Colossus

and Wolverine that they always did in the comics

and it was really cool to see done in the on

-screen and Just seeing a sentinel head was was

really cool for me because I love sentinels One

I didn't mention to you regarding x2. It's just

like a the one scene of Magneto and pyro talking

I don't know if it seems all that amazing, but

I just know that we constantly quote all the

time for no particular reason It's like quite

a talent you had there and all that good stuff.

So It's very upset that you got that one if you

didn't go ahead you better than I am No, no,

I'm just you guys are making references to my

top 10 list Oh, I'm sorry. No, it's okay. I'll

stay away from it. Let's definitely make sure

we don't get on your top ten list because we

look at the bottom, like what we hated about

or what we disliked about the franchise so far.

We talked about a bunch, Juggernaut and whatnot,

but I already mentioned it, but to me, like the

biggest thing, one of the biggest issues was

the way like Cyclops kind of becomes like a non

-character in all these, like even from X -Men

1 and X -Men 2, he's barely in X -Men 2 and X

-Men 1 he doesn't get much to do. So I mean that's

one like not necessarily a moment, but one thing

that I would always kind of bug me I don't know.

Are there any other moments that you guys can

think of that stuck out to you as idiotic or

stupid? Well, I think we mentioned the juggernaut

one earlier when he kind of lost his powers around

leech and he realized he's a mutant but uh, also

the other part with juggernaut where He actually

he starts plowing through the soldiers to get

in the building and they actually Frickin make

a bowling pin noise Yeah, if you go back and

listen they actually have a bowling pin noise

when he starts hitting all the soldiers it's

dumbest frickin thing And I think like I know

just the whole thing how Gene killed Xavier in

x3 to me. It was totally unnecessary I didn't

like how they did it at all and trying to bring

him kind of back in the end, which was, you know,

it was just, yeah, it was just like trying to

be shocking for shocking sake and really had

no point to it. But yeah. And then the only other

thing that kind of left a sour taste in my mouth

was the, you know, trying to do that relationship

between Iceman and Kitty. I didn't like it. I

think they should have used Colossus and that

would have gave him some more screen time. They

could have developed Colossus a little bit. That

always kind of bugged me. Yeah, anything come

to your mind Greg yeah coin I Think you guys

have been covering it pretty good with the negatives

there. I'm not Remembering too much for some

of that. It's probably a good idea like Here's

one like when Wolverine was was fighting saber

-tooth on top of the Statue of Liberty I didn't

care for the part where he kind of loops around

one of the One of the pointy ends on the central

liberties Tierra or whatever that is where he

kind of Loops around and cuts it off and the

CGI is bad And I'm pretty sure he would have

just frickin fell right off if that ever happened

I don't I'm pretty sure he wouldn't loop back

around and just land perfectly back on there

That kind of leaves a bad taste in my mouth And,

I don't know, that whole machine thing was kind

of weird for me. Yeah, like seeing Senator Kelly

kind of just disintegrate into a blob. Yeah,

that gloop thing. Yeah. That led to a Stanley

moment. I think the first Stanley came out from

not mistaken. It's funny how much they've grown.

Literally, he's just a character in the background,

selling hot dogs to... Actually having lines.

Yeah, yeah. I did want to mention one an honorable

mention for a good one that I I saw Actually

to real quick in first class right at the end.

They showed to make needles original comic book

costume I thought that was freaking awesome,

but then the other one this was a really funny

moment in the first x -men movie when You had

mystique posing as Wolverine and they were kind

of fighting and the real Wolverine comes out

Cyclops is ready to blast him and Wolverine's

like whoa, it's really me. He's like prove it

You're a dick. Okay. That was hilarious. That

summed up their relationship in four little short

lines. Very nice, yeah. Good mentioning those.

Alright, anything else before we take a break?

Nope, that's about it. Alright. I have something

to say. Say it! Go fuck yourself. Oh, yeah. That's

very true. I agree. That was shock value right

there. Yeah, probably the best use of an f -word

in a pg -13 movie ever so And then we get a call

back I was also not expecting getting a call

back in the in the next movie we're about to

discuss and of course That is the latest x -men

film x -men days of future past So we're gonna

take a little bit of break here and we come back.

All right, and welcome back and like I mentioned

we're gonna talk about x -men days of future

past and If you saw my top 30 anticipated movies

of 2014, you would see this was number one on

my list So I was heavily looking forward to it.

It did not make his list people. Don't let him

fool you He hates the x -men as we heard in the

first half screw those guys they're garbage I

think Boulevard Trask is right. Anyways, so I

guess we'll start with you walking out into the

theater. What were your first impressions of

X -Men Days of Future Past? First impressions

is I'd like to see Jennifer Lawrence in real

life in the Mystique outfit in front of me, if

that would be all right. Can we get that? I'm

pretty sure she's filing a restraining order

as we speak. Damn it! Beast might have a thing

or two to say about it. I could take Beast with

his jerry -curl hair and his soul glow that he

had. I was going to say buy him some soul glow

from Coming to America. Love that movie. I thought

it was good. I don't think it was as great as

X -Men The Last Stand. It was definitely better

than that. Yeah, X -Men First Class is what I

meant to say. I didn't think it was as good as

that one. I really liked First Class. It was

a little bit too much story to get into one movie,

but I think they did a really good job with it.

Chuck, what were your first impressions? My first

impressions were really good. I really enjoyed

it a lot. I know, like I mentioned before, X2

was... Probably my previous favorite and this

this really comes close to it It's it's really

close and I wanted to see it a second time. I

really did I know Dan you got a chance to see

it twice Yeah, I wish I could I wish I could

go see it again, but alas I could not but I I

did have some nitpicky things just kind of things

that I would have liked to seen but Overall I

came away from it really happy Mainly because

of the sentinels. I freaking love sentinels.

They're one of my favorite villains if you call

them like a villain And I was just so happy to

get them and I love the whole time -traveling

thing I guess I'll list a couple of the nitpicks

just to get them out of the way and that way

I can kind of end on a high note, but Because

I know on their last few podcasts we kind of

been slamming some movies that we supposedly

like So it sounded like I hated the movie from

my first little thing here, but I enjoyed it.

It's like, yeah, I love that movie, but there

was this wrong with it. But no, just a couple

of nitpicks. I think first and foremost, I think

Boulevard Trask was very underdeveloped as a

character. He could have been such a great villain,

but I wanted to see that obsession that drive

that moment that made him like hate mutant so

much. I really didn't see that. kind of like

you did with Stryker in X -Men 2. All you know

is he wants to create the Sentinel program to

track down the mutants, but you don't really

understand why he hates mutants so much. And

I ended up learning online somewhere that I guess

Bryan Singer wanted Peter Dinklage to play that

part. And I guess there was this kind of unspoken

thing where he's bitter about his height and

he considers himself to be somewhat of a mutant

and he's really bitter about that aspect of his

life so that's why he hates mutants so much but

they didn't really explain it yet in the movie

you know you didn't get any sort of sense like

that I think they had a little small part about

it but I didn't think it was that impactful where

he's talking to Stryker about that he doesn't

fear mutants or something like that. It was almost

like the mutants were a means to an end for him

that they were this ability to have like a rallying

cause to finally unite humanity because you have

a common enemy. To me, I don't know, it didn't

really come off that way. Yeah, it was kind of

trying to go for a watchman thing, but it wasn't

as good as watchmen. Yeah, I agree. He was relatively

underdeveloped and his motivations were more

sense if he was literally just a guy who wanted

to make a lot of money. He was an arms dealer

or something. But yeah, going the route they

did, I think it just made it a little bit murkier,

partially because there's so much going on that

maybe they just didn't have enough time. But

yeah, that could have been fleshed out a little

bit more. Yeah, definitely second thing I'm a

really big fan of Colossus and Every time they

showed Colossus in this movie. He was getting

his ass kicked. I Mean you see in the beginning

like he think I can't even get one punch in he

throws a punch the sentinel catches his fist

You know turns his arm flattens him There was

another scene where they they show them physically

ripping him in half at the waist It did look

awesome, but I wish he got a few licks in there

because Colossus is a really formidable fighter,

really more so than what they portrayed. That

kind of bothered me because I'm a big fan of

Colossus. They did have that really one cool

moment for him when using Blink in the teleportation

where he like goes jumps up into the sky and

he goes through all these different holes and

eventually hits one of the sentinels. In reality,

I think a lot, when it came to the future Sentinels,

they were all pretty inept, for a good reason.

Really, in all the movies, they never really

showed Colossus being a good fighter and a contributor.

That's one thing that I would have liked to see

more. But another thing, this is super nitpicky,

but I would have loved to see in the Sentinels

talk. I loved in the cartoon just that robot

voice and the stuff that they would say. Fugitive

mutant detected. Halt mutant, you know, stuff

like that. And this sentinel power core has been

damaged or something like that. I would have

liked to see them speak a little bit. That's

just a goofy little thing, but maybe they could

have shown some kind of fugitives running from

them and stuff like that on a street level type

thing. I think the reason that if they didn't

do that, I think they would have thought it was

a little bit maybe too corny, I guess. But I

would have liked to have seen that too. Yeah,

I mean I kind of got the vibe at least from the

future sentinels that they almost you almost

like terminator vibe where it's just You know,

there's no old very cold Yeah, just cold killers

that they have a thing and they're just unstoppable

and that's all they're trying to do maybe maybe

some of the older sentinels like the the ones

from the original ones, having them kind of talk

or something like that. But yeah, I'm guessing

it's similar to what you're saying, Greg. They

probably just didn't think that would really

go that well or what have you. Yeah. And I know

this next one I have is kind of something that

we talked about a little bit before, you know,

when we saw the movie. But the fact that it was

Kitty sending Wolverine back in time instead

of a telepath like Xavier. That really bugged

me because I know in the original story that

Kitty Pryde back in time, I believe it was Rachel

Gray, who was a powerful telepath that sent her

back to her body in the past. And the fact that

they used Kitty Pryde to do it in this one just

made no sense to me. I'm like, how is she able

to do that? I didn't get that part of it. The

reason I think they're to add this conversation

a few times, the reason the reason I think they're

doing it is a few for a few reasons. I mean,

If you think about her power, which is she can

phase through matter, I think the typical evolution

of a power from Unch, which does happen, the

idea of moving it from three dimensional objects

to like the fourth dimension, which is time,

I think does make sense. And I think the reason

they don't use a telepath is for a lot of reasons.

I think using a telepath, honestly, gives more

issues than using someone like Kitty Pride, who

can only do it for a specific purpose. If you

use someone like Professor Axe and he can send

so much consciousness back in time, that opens

up a lot of questions such as, well, if he can

send Wolverine's consciousness back, why can't

he send his own consciousness back to his own

body or to another body and end it all together?

I think you end up with more possibilities and

more questions there. But when you use someone

like Kitty, it's like, OK, this is she going

to do for one person. And it and I think partially

it's just a nod to. the original comic. Does

it make sense? To me, the movie established how

it worked, so it made sense within the movie.

But I think when it comes to time travel, it's

going to be a plot device no matter how you do

it. I mean, does it make sense in Back to the

Future? No, they just create this device that

doesn't even exist to explain it in a way. And

I think the less you try to explain time travel,

unless you're making a movie like Primer, the

better. It's just like, this is a conceit. you

go with it or you don't and I went with it because

similar if you see the movie Looper there's a

there's a conversation in there I don't want

to talk about time travel you start doing diagrams

with straws I think that's what happens the more

you talk about time travel it's like a it's like

quicksand you just become more and more issues

and more and more problems so I think that way

it's just clearer concise and you limit as many

questions as there could be. I mean, there's

questions no matter what. There's always conceits.

When you get into a time travel story, it's like,

why not go back to when Bulbar Trash was a baby

and maybe raise him right and not have that issue?

Or there's a lot of different things you can

come up with. So, yeah, I could see where you're

coming from. I just think I guess maybe I'm a

stickler for more things that make sense more

to me. But like, you know, if they used Xavier,

they could say, well, the reason he couldn't

go back with his own consciousness because his

past self was a powerful telepath in his own

right, and he perhaps would have been blocking

him or something like that, even though he didn't

have his powers at the time because of that serum.

But yeah, it's just a little thing. I really

didn't mind it in the overall scheme of things.

I think you definitely, that was the best explanation

I've heard, Dan, to explain how KittyPride is

possible. for being able to do that type of stuff,

because before I didn't really believe it. I

just thought it was like a second mutation, but

I think your explanation kind of has appeased

it in my mind, at least. So thanks, Dan. That's

what I mean. I'm here to serve, Greg. I mean,

yeah, I mean, technically, does it make sense

within? Maybe not. But I don't know. To me, it's

not really. It's not as just a device to get

you to a certain place. So whatever way you want

to do it It's just the idea of time travel is

gonna be an issue no matter how you approach

it. So 99 problems, but time traveling one I

Can tell why Jay -z didn't want to use that line.

It was way too hard to wrap So, yeah, I guess

move on to my good points now and express my

true feelings for the movie I'll leave a couple

things out because I'm pretty sure that one of

you guys is going to bring them up, but I'll

maybe stick to the stuff that I really liked.

And one of the things that I loved about it was

how things looked in the future. Even though

it was way too short and I would have loved to

seen more, but I loved seeing those mutants being

marched into the concentration camps and, you

know, they have the M scar over their right eye

and stuff like that. Seeing New York City destroyed,

and all the buildings decaying and stuff like

that. It was a really good image of the future.

Like I said before, I wish they would have...

Tuck wants to see us all dead. Yes. Wait. Damn

it, Tuck! Sorry, that was too enthusiastic. I

mean, no. Do you have a secret group of, like,

sentinel lovers that you get together and, like,

come up with ways that the future will actually

be controlled by sentinels? hey robots are pretty

scary i'm not gonna lie are you are you a sentinel

sympathizer i am i uh i'm actually half sentinel

i'm like bastion nice nice but uh but yeah i

i would have liked to seen you know kind of like

the rebels the fugitives running around on the

street level like running from the sentinels

i realize they don't time to do all that stuff

but it would have been a really cool moment to

see but i did like what they did give us i thought

it was really well done Far as like the sentinels

dropping from the ships. It had such an eerie

feel to it. I don't know if it was the The noise

they were putting in there with the soundtrack,

but it just seemed so eerie and creepy and it

was exactly what I was looking for with the future

timeline and just them kind of being relentless

and just hunting down the mutants and you know

It's not if they're coming. It's when they're

coming like they know they're right on their

tail and they're going to be breaking through

the fortress at any time and just they seem so

formidable they're almost unstoppable just really

really badass kind of like a a nimrod sort of

was in the comics um and then just the sheer

numbers of them in that last scene when they

descend upon them it's just like like how the

hell would anyone ever beat all these they're

just they're so badass you know did you what

do you think of the overall design of the the

future and I guess past sentinels. I like the

concept of the future sentinels. I think it's

something that we've never really seen before.

And I'm going to toot my own horn a little bit

here and say that when we first saw the picture

of the future sentinels come out, we said something

about it being reminiscent to mystique scales,

and maybe they'll be able to. Kind of shape change

into different things and take on different characteristics

and that's what they did and it was it was really

cool because it's something that I've never really

seen before so I enjoyed seeing that take on

it and It did work as a good device to make them

extremely badass and kind of operate as a hive

mind and use other powers With other enemies

based on who they're fighting and stuff. I thought

was a really cool aspect Yeah, yeah, I did like

how in that opening sequence it kind of we just

see how basically unstoppable they are and you

doesn't really explain it really because it's

just the first thing you see of it but you kind

of understand it's like oh they're adapting to

all these powers we don't really know why yet

but you just realize oh there's really nothing

you can do to stop these characters because there's

you know they can just change to whatever they

need to in order to stop the x -men so Yeah,

absolutely. I'll just mention one more thing

because the other couple of things I'm pretty

sure you guys will bring up, but I really enjoyed

seeing Iceman finally done the right way Hopping

on the ice slide gliding around, you know blasting

people with ice full body iced up really badass

Wish we could have seen more of him, you know

He kind of kind of got his head twisted off there

and stuff, but which looked really awesome. It

did actually Kind of like you dropped a statue

of Iceman and his head broke off just to get

into to my general thoughts real quick and When

I first actually like you mentioned Chuck I saw

this twice and the first time I saw it I know

I did enjoy it but I felt there were so much

going on but and I'm like I don't know how I

really really feel about it like I wasn't know

how to come up with a complete conclusion of

like what my Opinion was where it lied because

I felt like there were so much it just stand

out moments didn't stand out completely So I

ended up rewatching it and getting to see it

second time my schedule worked out well and I

think the second watch helped a great deal. I

noticed a lot more and I was able to kind of

like there's so much plot going on it says sometimes

you can get lost or so it's like you know you

have to go to this point to this point that the

reasoning behind everything I think I made it

maybe I wasn't paying close enough attention

or what have you I didn't maybe catch them the

first time but the second time I think I noticed

it more. I did really really enjoy it I liked

it a great deal Where we rank it with the other

X -Men we'll get to that but there's a lot I

really liked and I the first thing I was thinking

of seeing this movie is that there's so much

that can go wrong You know, you have these both

these two different teams. You have time travel.

You have a period piece There are so many different

hats this movie is wearing it like the fact that

it works at all is A testament just to Bryan

Singer the writing staff and the actors There's

a lot of things that surprised me a lot of things

that there was a few things that a little bit

disappointed me Mainly, I just wish that we got

more interaction with McAvoy and and Fassbender

as I pretty much admitted previously I just think

they should always have a bromance and we should

just it just be like a romantic comedy between

those two Maybe I don't know that'd be my favorite

movie ever, but I did really enjoy it So Greg,

did you have any particular moments that stood

out to you good or bad? I thought, not like a

really particular moment, but more of a character,

and I'm pretty sure this is one of the things

on Chuck's list that he was talking about that

we'd probably get to, but I thought Blink was

a total badass and I loved the portals going

through and how... the portals were used and

I wish I could go through those and watch those

a second time to see where everything's kind

of coming out and going in because at some points

it was kind of getting a little complicated but

I just thought that power was so amazing to see

on the screen. I don't particularly care for

how Blink looks. I always thought when they draw

it on the comic book page that kind of pretty

girl look, but with different colors going on.

But she kind of looked a little bit scary to

me. But I thought Blink was was just a great

moment overall whenever she was on the screen.

How about the how about when she started using

the portals to make the sentinels damage each

other? Yeah. Yeah. That was frickin amazing.

Like and then the one portal closes and the sentinel

just loses his arm. like that to me was just

so cool not to go into this any deeper but the

Use of Colossus when he was like jumping from

the sky using those portals the one with Bishop

when he's like using it as like a Like that's

like a shooting range. Oh, yes shooting through

the portal. That was pretty cool, too Yeah, I

love the way they use blank and I hope that I

think the person who played Blink signed like

a six -picture deal so hopefully we'll see here

in the future because I think our character gives

a lot of opportunity for cool different set pieces

and I like how they kind of slowed slowed the

speed down a little bit during those teleportation

sequences so you can better see how everything

was playing out so I that's the thing I like

about the X -Men movies is that you have so many

different powers that you can come up with like

creative ways with for action sequences like

even more so than the Avengers because you think

about the Avengers there's a lot of people that

punch and hit things but with The x -men you

all have like you have people have defensive

powers those that are more aggressive And I always

loved like I think magneto leads to a lot of

great pieces even smaller things like Him using

the gun, you know, he gets knocked down. You're

like, oh he saved a day But realizing he can

control the metal so he fires the gun in midair

And then uses then controls the bullet like that.

That was pretty pretty great Not to cut you off,

Greg, did you have anything else that you wanted

to mention? I'll just mention one more, because

there are kind of a lot of great moments, and

I think one of them that everybody has been really

talking about is the most standout action sequence

in the entire thing, and it's kind of the most

comical as well, is the scene with Quicksilver.

Even though, like Blink, he... doesn't look anything

how you really want the character to look like.

The action of the character and a little bit

of the characterization of him was done really

well of him running. through all these guards

at the Pentagon firing upon their little group

and Quicksilver going into action and taking

out all the guards and saving all of his, I guess

it would be quote unquote friends because they

didn't kind of hang out too much. He does things

quickly, so maybe they're now his best friends.

Yeah, he gets into relationships quick. Oh, we

just met. Oh, you want to get married? All right,

let's get married. And now you're pregnant. And

again. I didn't even feel that. What happened?

But it was it was pretty cool of him just running

around like crazy. The music to go along with

it was really good. And the poses of even having

some of the guards take themselves out and him

him just knowing how much. pressure or how much

like he needed to do without like giving the

permanent harm of Like not even actually just

punching somebody but having like just kind of

press up against them a little bit taking them

out That that was just Really cool and then seeing

everybody kind of react to it all once he was

done and having the policeman's cap on too. There

was a lot of great little things going on in

that scene that were just great and kind of what

you wanted to see from Quicksilver. And I think

the Quicksilver in the Avengers movie has a lot

to live up to, especially that actor since he

kind of gave a not so great performance in Godzilla.

He's really got up his game for the Avengers

movie. Yeah. Yeah, I agree that sequence is pretty

awesome. I pretty much everything I'll just echo

everything you just said Because it was a lot

of fun and I know we had a lot of worries about

quick server but his look honestly never became

an issue in the movie maybe just because things

were going so quickly and even like he wasn't

even in that outfit for too long because when

they picked him up at his house and everything

he wasn't in it too long it was just for maybe

like one scene really yeah yeah because he gets

changed into Like the guard outfit. I also even

like the when he's holding magneto by the head

like it's for whiplash. Oh, yeah That was I also

like a little bit of nod where it's like it opens

the door that you know, Magneto is his father

They don't outright say it but they just you

know, make a little mention of it, which was

nice And then you see the in the fun alley where

you see him and which is probably scarlet witch

like his younger sister sitting with him And

their mom looking at the screen you're like,

okay So I wonder if they're gonna go down that

further in upcoming that part I had a nitpick

about because technically Quicksilver and scar

which are supposed to be twins The fact they

were showing him older than hers. I mean, I don't

know why they did that. I I was kind of hoping

they just kept her as a twin Heard it wasn't

even the scarlet witch that he had on his lap

It was supposed to be somebody else or something.

It could be technically could be anyone who didn't

really you know, yeah Could be Polaris True.

Yeah, so I really like that there there are a

lot of standout sequences and what I liked about

it too was that at the end of the day like that

the thing that you had to stop wasn't necessarily

or the wasn't like a a bullet or a bomb or something

like that. But it's really just about changing

the viewpoint of a character and getting her

to go down a correct path or something. It was

more of a character adjustment than a plot point,

which I liked. I mean, I do like Jennifer Lawrence

as Mystique. Don't we all? I know in this like

that, like she had a lot of, you know, development

per se. She's just kind of on this mission. But

I do think, you know, people are saying maybe

she'll be like the new Wolverine. I don't know

if that'll happen, but. I heard she's supposed

to be getting some kind of deal to just play

Mystique in a standalone movie. I mean, I could

definitely see that. I think she has some great

action moments. She has a lot of possibility.

But I also think that the first class cast overall,

I mean, like McKellen and Stewart in the first

film, but I think the first class cast is better.

It's a stronger cast. And I think bringing Hugh

Jackman into that was a really good Mixture of

talent. I like the interaction between all of

them Seeing them all together and also not to

give like spoilers away but I like the fact that

this Justin was Wolverine saving the day like

he has in the past movies that they kind of change

it up a little bit and and to Nicholas hold as

beast I doesn't have a great deal to do but I

like his portrayal of the character and he has

a lot of he makes a lot for the little bit he

does get Yeah, well maybe you know it was the

70s, you know If you if you're gonna be a beast

you might as well be a beast that's stylish and

I also like in the one scene where that you see

they're kind of using Like a throwback to the

supporter film with you know mystique, you know

walking and and I think was in Paris or whatever

I like that little nod and I do think overall

though Chucky mentioned with first class how

they use like the Cuban Missile Crisis as a huge

plot pointer to add a lot of weight to what's

going on and this one I don't think it was as

effective like the past didn't really play a

big part into what was going on. I did like the

thing with Kennedy though how he said like no

I didn't kill him I was actually trying to save

him because he's one of us yeah so I'm like Alicia

and Kennedy was a mutant but that was kind of

cool. Yeah, yeah, I mean you did have some guy

playing Nixon so that there's there's that plus

He did a pretty good job at his voice actually

Yeah, and Nixon's a hard character like a hard

president to pull off just because naturally

He's kind of funny even if you don't mean him

to be so it's you kind of have to play both sides

of it Anything else we wanted to mention before?

Yeah, I I just kind of wanted to echo again like

what you said about uh, you know Fassbender and

and McAvoy and stuff Fassbender as Magneto, like

I said, I was really impressed with him in first

class and it seemed like he just picked right

up where he left off. He just really gets this

character, his attitude about him that's like

really kind of intimidating. And it's this great

foreshadowing of the great leader that he will

become one day for mutant kind. Like he just

has that that aura about him. I don't know how

he does it, but it's kind of like, dare I say,

uncanny. And then just like. I did think, I mean,

McAvoy was kind of a punk in this. I know that

was part of the plot and everything, but I did

really like his moment with Patrick Stewart when

they were kind of cyclically linked. I thought

that was a really inspiring moment. And, you

know, he kind of gives him a little bit of wisdom

there. And I think we'd all like to talk to our

younger selves at some point and give them some

advice. And he actually gets to do it. Yeah,

I do. I do think. Xavier has the best arc in

this out of any characters really probably the

character has any arc at all just Seeing where

he is and where he ends up being I did really

like that seeing how we know a little I mean

a little bit of nod you can you could definitely

see the Algorical comparison to something like

heroin with his addiction to like the serum or

whatnot Which was maybe a little heavy -handed

here and there but I just like seeing him kind

of being molded into and I think it makes a lot

of sense considering the fact that He has lost

a lot, you know, you have Vietnam and a lot of

people leaving so seeing him kind of in a lost

state Makes sense and I think it gave a lot of

dramatic weight to what was going on. So yeah,

and then I guess uh Well, I guess we shouldn't

really spoil too much should we? You know what,

if you have not checked it out yet, maybe skip

ahead, maybe five minutes or so. But if you're

listening to this, my guess is you've probably

already seen X -Men Days of Future Past, let's

be honest. Yeah, so with those kind of spoilers,

I'm going to ruin something pretty big here at

the end. So extra warning right here, if you

don't want to hear it, just skip ahead. But I

loved when they kind of wrapped everything up

at the end with... all the cameos and to me it's

just kind of saying like okay everything's like

fixed now we kind of fixed all the screw -ups

we had with x3 and all that stuff you know gene

and scott and you know they have the colossus

and kitty thing fixed because you see them together

trying to teach the class and even had kelsey

grammar in there who uh they brought back in

during reshoots to to have him appear as beast

and you know it was for a quick second Which

is kind of funny you think he probably went through

eight hours of makeup just for literally like

three seconds of screen time I know and then

You know, you have wolverine being found by striker

presumably to have his adamantium procedure done

but The weird part is they have mystique posing

a striker. So i'm not sure what they're doing

there No, that's that's still and the thing is

he doesn't pop his claws in the future So we

don't even know what that's what i mean. Actually,

no he did when he was lying on the table They

did pop out and they were adamantium. I meant

so I meant like when the future was resets and

he wakes up. Oh Yeah, I do find it interesting

that when he wakes up in the past and in the

new future that it's playing the same song on

On the radio. I Didn't even notice that. Yeah,

I forget the name of the song I didn't notice

it either my wife did and I'm like, oh I missed

that completely because I was playing on the

radio Yeah, she actually pays attention to x

-men movies. She does like the extra franchise

But something cool I wanted to bring up too is

I leading up to this kind of I I kind of consumed

the three major versions of the stacer future

past story. I read the original comic Saw the

movie and I saw the animated series version of

it and they're all very different Honestly, I'm

gonna say I like the comic the least of the three.

Oh, yeah It's a great story, but it was only

two issues. It could have been so much more.

But for its time and what it's set into motion

and everything, it was great. But the common

thread in all three of them is Mystique, actually.

And I'm glad they chose to keep her as the central

antagonist in this movie, because in all three

versions, she is the killer. She is the catalyst

that would set this future into motion. Like

in the comic, she's leading the Brotherhood and

she has like Blob and Pyro and Avalanche and

Destiny and stuff like that. But that's like

the common thread in all three of them. And I

thought that was really cool that they kept up,

you know, with as much as they were changing.

That was the one thing that they really stayed

true to for the comic story. And also in the

comic, we never actually get to see whether they

change the future. They really don't show you

the future again, which in the comic is oddly

enough is supposed to be 2013. Nice. And we didn't

have no freaking sentinels last year. They're

coming with the hoverboards. Yeah. But in the

movie, apparently it's supposed to be twenty

twenty three, I guess. But but in the comic,

they never show you whether they altered the

future or not, but they do show the president

telling It's actually Henry Peter Geirich to

go ahead and design and construct a new series

of Sentinels. So it kind of appears in the comic

like they failed with their mission or else that

event wasn't the one that changed history. But,

you know, in the movie, they made it successful.

And I think part of that is to try to set up

the next movie or whatever. But and then that

kind of ties in also with the cartoon. You see

like. Bishop and X -Men stopping Mystique from

assassinating Senator Kelly and But then you

see Mystique say well, I failed the apocalypse,

you know, he wanted me to Kill Senator Kelly

to ensure the future of mutants as he sees it

should be So maybe they took a little bit from

that. I'm not sure but obviously they're Like

they've already announced they're setting up

their X -Men apocalypse movie. So it should be

interesting how that stuff all ties in Yeah,

and that's kind of what I was thinking when Mystique

picks up Wolverine was maybe like somehow She's

already connected to apocalypse and that's how

Wolverine's gonna get his adamantium is through

Wolverine is through apocalypse or something

I don't know that would make a lot of sense considering

they want to make her like more of a central

character Yeah, and maybe I mean Wolverine was

a horseman of apocalypse for a short time. I

think he played death. So what? Just kidding

Like I thought you would know that but good acting

good acting But yeah, there's a lot a lot to

like in days of future past and in I think of

all the movie reviews We've done so far. This

is by far the most positive. So there you go

Did did you guys know that uh The guy they got

to play striker in this movie They originally

had him to play a young Kane Marco. Oh, really?

Yeah, but they they cut it out. They thought

it would be like, you know too much kind of thrown

in there with xavier's backstory and stuff So

they made him striker instead, but he was originally

cast to be a young juggernaut Is it me or does

he look a little bit like sean william scott

the guy who plays stifler in america? a little

bit He kind of does actually that's all that's

all I could think of it's like stifler striker.

It's so weird But I guess I guess to finish this

up, we've been talking about the X -Men franchise.

So being comic book fans, and this is how you

determine how good things are, you rank them.

So we're going to maybe go into ranking the X

-Men movies from our least favorite to our favorite.

I'm going to guess they might be similar based

upon our conversation, but does anyone want to

be eager and be the first one to do it? I guess,

you know, I can start. You just want me to go

because you know I have nothing written down

at all. No, I don't want to steal your ideas.

I feel like I've been stepping on your toes all

episodes. I just want to give you your fair share

of moment in the sun or whatever. Well, I'm just

listing them right off right through the ranks,

right? Yeah, that's all. You don't have to go

in great detail. OK. For my worst, I'm going

to go with X -Men The Last Stand, of course.

If the Wolverine movies were in here, I would

be having Wolverine Origins first, but it's X

-Men The Last Stand. Then I'm going to go with

the original X -Men movie. Even though it's leaps

and bounds ahead of X -Men The Last Stand. So

you're going worst to best, right? Yeah. OK,

just to make sure. Yeah, well, of course, it's

the worst because I'm starting off with X -Men

The Last Stand, Chuck. So X -Men Last Stand,

first X -Men movie. Then I'm going to go with

the second X -Men movie. So there's the whole

first trilogy. Then I'm going to go Days of Future

Past. And then I'm going to go with X -Men First

Classes is by far my all -time favorite X -Men

movie. Chuck, what about you? Well, I'm going

to put... Guess as my worst one counting down

from five. I'm gonna put the original x -men

movie at number five Oh, really? Yeah, I just

I never cared for that too much I mean there

there's a lot of good elements like Dan mentioned

before but Overall, I was really disappointed

with that movie number four. I would go ahead

and put the last stand and then I think number

three would be first class for me and These last

two are tough. I think I would have to say X2

at number two. And then maybe it's because I

just watched it, but I got to put Days of Future

Past as my new number one. Oh, wow. Shocking,

shocking top five for Chuck. It might be the

shock value just because I just saw it and I'm.

You know, I still got my excitement from all

the all the stuff that I liked about it, but.

You know, it's it's it's right there with x2.

They're they're both very close for me Okay,

so now it's my turn. Uh, well my favorite is

x -men the last stand. Uh, no, not really Actually

if we like like with greg if I was doing canning

wolverine that would be the last and then x -men

the last stand and then after that would be the

first x -men movie and then This is where it

gets a little bit tough if I was actually an

accountant the Wolverine movies I'd actually

would put the Wolverine the one from last year

next but since we're not I would then go X -Men

2 X -Men Days of Future Past and then X -Men

First Class is my favorite so Dan and I match

up. Oh, yeah, I didn't even realize that Yeah,

so yeah, and for me the number one is X -Men

First Class then X -Men Days of Future Past and

then X2 And then X -Men and then X -Men The Last

Stand. So X -2 and Days of Future Past, those

are a little bit back and forth. But for me,

bar none, First Class is my favorite one. So

it may actually be my favorite Marvel movie period.

Oh, wow. Yeah. Yeah, I went there. Yeah. Do you

know, you know, it's interesting that, you know,

seeing that we're naming all these movies for

the X -Men films. are based on a Chris Claremont

written comic, which just kind of blows my mind.

I mean, he is the best X -Men writer, you know,

most people admit, but if you look at like the

Wolverine was based off his 1982 Wolverine series.

The Last Stand was based off Dark Phoenix Saga.

The X2 was based on God Loves Man Kills. And

then you have, of course, the Days of Future

Past one, but pretty crazy. Yeah, yeah. He actually

shows up in Days of Future Past at one point.

I believe he's a senator or something. Yeah,

Greg, you picked that out on the credits when

we were sitting at the end there. Yes, I did.

Nice, nice. Now, here's a question. Here's a

question for you. Because I've been going back

and forth with this a lot. What did you like

more, X -Men Days of Future Past or Captain America

The Winter Soldier? don't do this to me i'll

say mine because i i don't think it's that hard

to figure out i i thought captain america was

um the better movie not by a whole lot but i

definitely think it was was the better yeah i

and i like x -men i like x -men much better than

captain america so that's saying a lot yeah i've

gone back and forth and when after i saw x -men

the first time i'm like captain america no doubt

after the second time it was a little bit iffy

but I've only seen Captain America 1 so I'm inclined

to go Winter Soldier but I'm not 100 % positive

so it's tough. Yeah I think I would probably

give the edge to Winter Soldier just because

that movie to me seemed like so flawless like

for some reason I know some people might dispute

that but just everything in that movie seemed

to be perfect for me and it's a It's a type of

movie that translates well from the comics to

the movie screen, even better so than the X -Men.

Days of Future Past was really well done, but

with those nitpicks in there, I would give the

edge to the Captain America sequel. Yeah, they

definitely have a lot more to cover in Days of

Future Past than Captain America, and I think

it's just a simpler story that's easier to present

in a movie format. Very true, very true. All

right. That was my profound moment of the podcast.

fix it and do it again. Yes, but Xavier's sending

me not Kitty. All right, so here we go. The top

10 signs that you like X -Men movies way too

much. Number 10, you regularly call people bub

at work. Number nine, when entering Wal -Mart,

you wave your hands in an outward motion to open

the doors like Magneto would. Sad thing is I

do that. I know. I totally have done that before,

you know, and at the same time, you kind of impress

some five year olds on the side there. Literally

did that today. Not going to lie. Went grocery

shopping. Number eight, when you went the rain

clouds to clear up, you actually raise your hands

to the sky and try to will them away. Number

seven with knives between your fingers you chase

after the mailman screaming you picked the wrong

house Bob And scare the hell out of your mailman

Number six whenever you visit a hospital you

sit down in a wheelchair and make concentrating

faces as people as they walk by Number five you

buy red sunglasses and lift them up while looking

at people you'd like to optic blast I've totally

done that. I used to buy red glass and be like,

yeah, I'm Cyclops. Number four, whenever someone

does something impressive, you say, quite a talent

you have there. We've been saying that one for

years. Yeah. Number three, we've all done this

in the winter time. You breathe on your car windows

and pretend you're Iceman. I totally do that.

Number two you befriend bald people just to play

chess with them And you take a special delight

in beating them And the number one reason you

like x -men movies way too much Occasionally

you mow down a helpless old lady at the mall

and exclaim. I'm the juggernaut bitch I say you

delivered that line way better than the movie

did. I probably rehearsed it more than the movie

did. I did want to mention though, Dan, you remember

when we were in Pittsburgh that one time, the

elevator thing? Oh, yes, I do. Pretending I was

Colossus and I put my hands at the center of

the elevator and I start to pull my arms out

and all of a sudden the doors just open and it

looked like I was super strong and I was like,

oh, I totally did that. just happen to open at

the right time though perfect timing um anything

else before we bring this episode to a close
