Talking in Circles
2015 Year in Review & 2016 Preview

About this Episode
Hi, this is Kyle Higgins and you're listening
to the Geek Catch Radio Network. You are now
on the inside of what I like to call the circle
of trust. We are all connected in a great circle
of life. You know something Bert? What? I think
you and I are going in circles. It feels like
we're going in circles. The circle is now complete.
When I left you, I was but the third. Now I am
the last. Because it's a circle. Yeah, we heard
about the circle. Yeah, that's what the million
would say. Hi, this is Greg. This is Chuck. And
this is Dan, and we are Talks and Circles, brought
to you by the Cass Review Network, the podcast
that's back, and better than ever, for 2016.
Uh, yes, we've had a little bit of... and he's
better than ever hey now hey now my boyfriend's
back he's back i've heard that i've heard he's
back and the incredible singing greg is back
as well yes yes he's chomping at the bit in order
to start singing mini mini songs you're gonna
get a lot of a lot of greg this episode but what
we're doing today is actually we're gonna do
a little bit of a look back at the year of 2015
kind of what we enjoyed this past year and then
also doing that it feels apt to look forward
in what's coming up in 2016 there's a lot going
on, comics -wise, TV -wise, movie -wise, a lot
of good geekness in store for sure, but before
we get to all that, how's your week been going?
My week's been going alright, I guess. Nothing
really special going on. I've been reading and
playing Fallout 4. I have been consumed by it.
I'm not sure which order episodes are going out,
but I kind of revoke my review of Fallout from
the last time. I am completely getting into it
now. It's getting a lot better. I'm getting used
to it and everything. So disregard what I said
in the last episode. I don't like the building
still, but it's still a lot of fucking fun. I
am entrenched in it are you still are you still
uh entrenched in battlefront or is that coming
going I play that a lot, too. It's just I only
have so much time in a day. Oh, come on. I do.
I do play it every once in a while. I played
it last Saturday with my brother. But he's now
that I've been playing a little bit more fallout,
he's leveled up a little bit higher than I am,
which is kind of sad. But I do play that quite
often, too. I'm hooked on that. I'm hooked. And
it's been killing my comic book reading. I get
my order for comics for the week. Can I have
trouble making my way through it because of the
video games? I'm in I mean story of our life
story of our life How things going with you?
Okay, I guess You know had some good some bad
here and there We had a unfortunately had a death
in the family So that was kind of a rough week
for the family and everything and my aunt passed
away Most definitely sorry to hear that. That's
never that's always tough. Yeah, appreciate it.
It was she was young was unfortunate kind of
a sudden thing but um so it was it was definitely
a rough week but uh we have a big family and
we stuck together and you know we'll be all right
so uh i mean other than that i don't know just
trying to uh catch up on watching stuff that
I've been neglecting lately and catching up on
all the football news and coaching changes and
Giants Giants just signed a new coach today.
So yeah, and then you I'm sure you're ecstatic
that you got a Joe Philbin That's the offensive
coordinator. Oh Or you might get him. Well, I
feel like with Ben McAdoo he'll probably be running
most of the offense would be me my assumption
but I just find it interesting that Tom Coughlin
was uh was uh interviewing with the Eagles and
I was like, you know what I actually I kind of
don't like what the Giants did to him. I felt
like they really Yeah made him the scapegoat
when it was clearly Jerry Reese's awful drafting
that's been killing the Giants for such a long
time. Did you see the thing when Coughlin walked
off the stage and he totally snubbed the guy
when he walked by him? I don't know if that was
on purpose, but he did not want to leave, but
the Giants felt like they needed to make a change
and it should have been Jerry Reese because he's
an awful GM, but what are you going to do? I
don't know. I mean, Coughlin's... Coughlin's
quite possibly a Hall of Fame coach, and he's
got two Super Bowl rings. And as my cousin pointed
out to me, don't forget what he did with Jacksonville
when they started as an expansion team. He took
them pretty far right off the get go. So, yeah.
Yeah, and it's definitely good coach. Yeah, and
which I wasn't surprised I was getting interviews
and I guess he either withdrew his name from
the Eagles So I don't know but if he goes there
I'll hope for the best for them him only me actually
kind of root for the Eagles a little bit which
feels dirty which definitely feels dirty I Actually,
I have I have some big news like you guys know
that the Powerball was this past week and I did
not win it I did I won it I won four dollars.
I got the Powerball number right, which I feel
like is the most important number. So why is
it? It says power in front of it. You get money
for the Powerball? You get you get it's think
four bucks if you get the Powerball number correctly.
Oh, OK. I also got four bucks then. Awesome.
You if you did that extra like if you paid the
extra dollar for your ticket then it's actually
eight dollars or what have you? Okay, yeah the
most important for yeah, I didn't I didn't fortunately
when I win a billion dollars I studied all night
and nothing so that's what I get I only bought
I only bought one ticket and It was weird like
I Have so close on like all of the numbers like
Four of my numbers were like one digit off really
really close i'm like oh man i guess the i guess
my psychic waves were just slightly off that
night did you pick your numbers did you let the
computer pick i did i picked my own yeah yeah
see i don't i read the odds are better if you
let them pick them so i figured you know even
the only reason the odds are better is because
that many people use the quick picks yeah so
it says like like 80 percent of the people do
quick picks and like 80 percent of the winners
Are from QuickPix, but that's because 80 % of
people use QuickPix. Partially is because people
Tend to like go with the like numbers under 29.
So they ignore the figure numbers. I just said
I studied all night and it didn't help. I just
picked them completely random. So I'm you know
anything from 1 to 69 is I Don't even care. I'm
picking it. Would you hear about there is a This
restaurant in New Jersey, and I guess like all
the waiters and waitresses Got together and they
got tickets and they're reading off the numbers
and they were getting them all right And they
got them all right and they're like freaking
out getting excited and then they realized they
were reading the numbers from the previous drawing
Not the current one. So it was then a bucket
of sadness as they realized that they were not
trillionaires. So It was a good time it was a
good time but uh Since I did not win the Powerball,
I did try to soak my sadness in some good television
watching, and I've been watching, I actually
cut up with, if you look back in 2015, one of
the most talked about shows, definitely the end
of year in 2015, which was the documentary series
on Netflix making a murderer. I don't know if
you guys have heard of it at all. I saw a trailer
or something on YouTube, an ad for it. It looked
quite interesting. It's about some guy that was
falsely accused of rape and then got accused
of murder or something. Is that correct? Yeah,
it's this guy in Wisconsin and it starts off
where he is arrested for rape in the early 80s.
And about 20, 16 years later. he is set free
because the DNA evidence shows that he was not
the murderer and it goes into like why he was
selected and a lot of it was based upon like
the knowledge of his family like his family is
one of the more poor families in the neighborhood
and they own this junkyard so there's a lot of
like people within the community that kind of
uh have negative feelings towards them so that
kind of went into it but then he comes out and
he's lauded as this victim but then he becomes
the lead suspect in this murder case of this
person and What makes it interesting is now knowing
that he was set free There's this huge investigation
over to if he actually did it was he being set
up and it's this I think it's ten issues or ten
issues I've been talking about comics a lot.
You can't tell a 10 episode series and it's fascinating
Just just what what happened was made over 10
years It was interesting like they tried to shop
this around to like HBO Networks and none of
them picked it up Netflix eventually did it's
it's really fascinating in that end It I think
in a lot of people will compare it to like the
jinx that came earlier this year similar situation
I think the jinx is probably better but different.
It's almost the opposite of the jinx and how
it's presented but Honestly though like I know
a lot of people were like signing petitions like
trying to get it trying to have people look into
this case and I will say is After watching it
like I think it's kind of shady a lot of the
stuff that went on But I kind of think the guy
did it He's just really creepy and there's something
about him. I'm like, I think I'm pretty sure
he did it Maybe they falsified some few things,
but I'm almost positive, but I don't know it
is really good I didn't I don't want to get anything
away, but it's If you're into true crime documentaries,
definitely check it out. It's on Netflix. It's
10 episodes and my wife and I kind of finished
it within two days or so. It's just one of those
things. A quick addiction that now I'm looking
for more. Greg, I believe you've also finally
finished a Netflix series, if I'm not mistaken.
Yes, I have. I finally finished Miss Jessica
Jones. And overall, it was good. Definitely nowhere
near as good as Daredevil. I thought if you don't
know, it's based off of Brian Michael Bendis.
So, yeah. Well, I wasn't judging it too much
off of him. Because it's it's only based off
of what he did. So there's definitely probably
changes I never read the the series back in the
day when she appeared on the vendors. I was like,
who the hell is this chick? I was the same way.
I figured like because I was out of comics for
so long that she was a character I was just not
aware of. But apparently, you know, yeah, kind
of come out of nowhere. So yeah, and it was a
good series. I loved a lot of the actors in it.
I thought the acting was very well done I liked
the lead and I'm Drawing a blank on the leads
name right now, but my one of my favorite people
is in there David Tennant who was a doctor at
one point for a doctor who he's my favorite doctor
So it was kind of hard a little hard for me to
overlook him being the doctor Even when he was
being mean. I'm like, oh, he's the doctor. He's
he's a nice cheery guy He there's there's something
going on there that brings them up, but I thought
his acting was very well done. I thought there
was a lot of interesting stuff going on. Oh,
I also liked Luke Cage. I thought he was one
of the best parts. A lot of sex between him and
Jessica Jones. I don't think I'm giving anything
away with that. A lot of sex, but story was interesting.
I kind of got into it, but then I kind of petered
off towards the end. It kind of falls into a
Brian Michael Bendis trope, if you ask me. Interesting
concept, but the ending was kind of just blah.
It's tough to tell if they were doing a two -page
spread with it because it's a TV show and not
a comic book. That's something I think Bendis
does is add a lot of nice fancy artwork in there
and make it visually appealing, which the show
was very visually appealing. And I thought the
villain was somebody that you could really hate,
even though I loved him anyway. And Carrie Anne
Moss was great as the... Douchebag lawyer. I
thought that was great. I love the best friend
like seriously. I just love the characters That
was the main thing about this show that I liked
the story on the other hand felt a little drawn
out a little bit like it was repeating itself
and The ending was just kind of fell flat for
me I think it wasn't anything interesting. I
think it was a few episodes too long Yeah, I
like the I like the actual end -to -end kind
of the final confrontation and like how that
plays out But I think I didn't understand it
too much Maybe you could explain it to me a little
bit when we're off air because I I'm not sure
if I was Fully paying attention to it or not
because I was also playing Minecraft at the same
time. So Yeah, I'm a five -year -old now everybody.
I'm sorry but Yeah, that that felt a little flat
for me. I'm not sure if I missed something or
what. So you'll have to explain that to me. But
I thought it fell into the the Bendis trope.
And I tried to look at it differently because,
hey, when I first started the series, I really
didn't know that it was a Bendis thing. But I
found out and I still was trying to distance
myself from knowing it was him. And it still
kind of fell into his tropes, I think. I was
satisfied with the ending for sure. I do think
it could have gotten there a little quicker though.
Yeah, definitely as as I watched the show I felt
like I felt myself become less and less excited
about it, but I still wanted to like just just
watch it just to see how it ended. Yeah, it almost
felt like it felt like a chore to me to like
finish the last few episodes. I'm like, oh, I
got to see how this ends, but I don't really
want to watch it. It's always like, oh, we caught
him. Oh, he escaped. Oh, we got him. He escaped.
And they kept kind of repeating that same thing
over and over again. They really didn't do anything
new throughout the series. There were a couple
minor character things that were interesting.
I didn't care for the cop that becomes part of
their crew. Yeah, it was there was a weird character
and change in there I'm not sure if that was
something from the comics that they tried to
put in there with it But it just felt like a
weird change to me and I really don't understand
why they did it by the way Jessica Jones's friend
is super adorable I'd I'm the pervy guy here.
So I had to put that out there see what I liked
about the ending when they tried to test his
morality and almost kind of see him Try to see
the other side of using his powers in another
way I guess without trying to get anything away
When he was dealt dealing with that hostage crisis
like I really like that was interesting, but
the very ending Yeah, I don't know but Chuck
anything you wanted that I mean the story overall
like there was definitely some good writing in
it, but I Got to be honest like if if I were
to be honest with myself I don't think I would
recommend this show to someone. Like, I don't
know. At least maybe it's just my taste, but
I found it kind of deeply disturbing. I think.
Do you have a favorite part, Chuck? Like, I thought
the the the whole thing with the druggie neighbor
was was kind of interesting. I do like his I
do like his arc, like how he came around, like
he. He might be my favorite character, actually.
I think was his name Malcolm. He's former Power
Ranger, if I'm not mistaken. Oh, really? Yeah.
One of the one of the late later ones long after.
Oh, OK. That's that's after they start stopped
putting like black people and the black Power
Ranger and Asian people and they as a yellow
Power Ranger. It took like, you know, because
I was totally going to guess that he was the
Black Ranger. Yeah, and they and they stopped
putting jealous people in the Green Ranger suit.
Yeah. Terrible joke. I don't know. I mean, there
was some things I liked. I liked Malcolm's character
and I did like. Trish Walker, Patsy Walker, which
is, you know, she's Hellcat, right? Yeah, I figured
that. Yeah. Which I was really hoping they would
give her like, you know, more of a like Avenue
to become her own hero, but maybe maybe they
have plans for that later on. I don't know. But
that was pretty cool. But just there's a lot
of stuff I didn't like about it. It was like
total turnoff, like just disturbing things like
the way he made people kill themselves and stuff.
I'm like, this is messed up. Like, what the frig?
See, that's kind of what I really liked about
it. Honestly, I liked how it I don't like where
it took me like. It's I don't know. I don't like
that stuff. It's just it's disturbing to me and
it's just I do like that stuff even though it
makes me very creepy and I am I'm Like the the
devil to Chuck's angel on those kind of things.
I did kind of like that But there was just other
stuff going on that didn't do it for me. So I
like how it all Marvel stuff it did go after
some themes and some ideas that Were much more
adult compared to other marvel stuff and some
of that was disturbing but I think that's I think
the way they were able to go after that with
the purple man character was was intriguing and
his yeah his what you would see when you have
this character that um, you know, you know has
a power professor behavior but has no moral compass
and what it takes to get him there and uh, the
effect it can have uh, I don't think you need
to go that dark though to get the story. Like
I didn't think it served any purpose going that
far off the deep end. I don't know. I don't know.
Maybe I'm desensitized, but I didn't feel like
it was that off the deep end. And I think those
types of topics, there's a lot of interesting
conversations or interesting evaluations or thoughts
you can Kind of get by going after things like
psychotic mind of a character like that But maybe
there was elements where it was shock value,
but I don't know. I never felt that I felt like
it Was used in an interesting way that made it
compelling for me. I don't know. I just I can't
I can't really see it that way but Just I don't
know. I can't explain it. It's just really really
strange like different from anything I've ever
seen like I'll tell you another thing. I didn't
like was the the creepy twins, Ruben and Robin.
That was really weird. Yeah, they were bizarre.
Interesting part of the story, I guess, but that
was kind of creepy. They creeped me out. Oh,
and for all the Whovians out there, I wonder
if anybody else got really excited when David
Tennant started saying clever a lot towards the
end of the series. and you guys are just like,
I don't know. Was that the Easter egg that I
heard about? I guess, I don't know, but the...
Because someone was saying like, oh, the, you
know, eagle -eyed who fans could pick out the
reference, and I was like, I have no clue what
it was. Well, when he says, when he is the doctor,
he's always like, and I'm very clever, like...
kind of like he used the word clever a lot when
he was the doctor and everything that was a big
thing on that show and like three times I heard
him say it on the show so it could just be a
coincidence but whenever he said clever it kind
of got my who boner up. There's a term for you.
I think we have an episode title. Is there a
Viagra for that? Will iTunes allow a who boner?
If I've spaced it out correctly, I guess. OK.
Yeah, we'll see. Who bone underscore are. There's
probably there's probably worse things they've
allowed, you know. Chuck, have you been watching,
reading, listening, anything? Like I did start
watching something that you guys talked about
a few weeks back, and that was me in the high
castle. Nice. I watched the first episode of
that because I decided to finally try the free
trial of Amazon Prime. So I'm trying to watch
the 10 episodes of that before the trial runs
out. I think it lasts a while because I think
my parents did it too. I think it's 30 days,
right? Yeah, something like that. And it's funny
because like an email address for the next 30
days. and it's funny because like I bought stuff
on there and I was like okay let's you know see
how this two -day shipping is that sounds pretty
cool and like it was like when did I buy it I
think it was it was right before a new year's
day so like I bought it on I bought it on Thursday
and I was like oh you know it should get here
Saturday or maybe because the holiday like maybe
Monday But it ended up getting here Tuesday.
I'm like, wait a minute, this is not two day
shipping. I'm like, this is like five day shipping.
What the hell? This is just weird. But weird,
because I've never had issues with them that
way. And what's kind of cool now is that in here,
they have like same day. Like we can like I can
order something on Amazon and I'll be at my door
within like five hours. It's insane. Yeah, that's
that's the advantage of the big city. Yeah, it's
we order I forget what it was we had to get something
and we're like well looking at target and then
we're gonna go to target but then amazon was
having a sale if we use that that that uh process
it would be cheaper and we get a free like case
of soda so it was like all right well it's like
it's like ordering from pizza hut but instead
we're ordering like batteries and baby formula
so it's like there you go. It'd be funny if you
like you're ordering something and you like you
click on it and you hear It's like, what the
hell is that? Here you go, sir. Oh, and we also
got you Chinese food along the way. Yeah, and
then it was funny. I ordered like graphic novels
and stuff. And for the first time ever, the graphic
novels that I ordered came damaged. Oh, that
sucks. And they're usually pretty good about
their packaging. But this time, like they were
just thrown in the box with nothing else. Like
there was no sort of those, you know, air packing
thingies. Yeah, they weren't in there. Like the
one book was inside of the other book and the
pages were all mangled and stuff like that. And
I ended up having to like send it back like twice
before I got one that wasn't damaged. I mean,
they paid for the return shipping and everything,
but it was just really annoying. So I'm like,
I don't know if I want to pay one hundred dollars
for. prime when I'm getting damaged items anyway.
Like, I don't know. Were you ordering from Amazon
or was it a third party? No, it was Amazon. That's
awful. Yeah, I even called the lady and like
I complained about it and stuff and she's like,
oh, that's really strange. And even when I ordered
the replacement, that one was damaged and it
was damaged the same exact way. And she's like,
well, she's like, maybe our entire shipment of
that particular book was like damaged somehow
or whatever. Doesn't make it better. I know.
I'm like, well, I'm like, OK, possibly. But I'm
like, how does your box packer guy at the warehouse
like how does he pick up a damaged book and say.
Yeah, this looks acceptable and put it in the
box to send it out. I'm like, how does that happen?
She's like, no, you're totally right. That's
yeah. I don't know why that's happening. But
ended up getting it straightened out. So but.
back to the back to the point we were talking
about. Man the High Castle. I really enjoyed
the first episode, so I'll definitely be checking
out the rest of those. I like how it's like set
in the past and it's like kind of in the 60s.
So it's it's like after the war, but still well
before any of our time periods. Yeah, it's just
kind of interesting dynamic they have going on
there and stuff. But I'm anxious to see how that
turns out. Did you guys finish finish that? I'm
still the second episode. So there you go. I
finished it and it really does keep up the momentum
and awesomeness of it. Yeah, and I told a girl
that I work with about it and she Watched the
first episode and then apparently just binge
-watched it. Her mother was complaining to me
that I started her on something and got her addicted
to this show. So apparently it's good for her
as well. So two high recommendations right there.
Also, I did watch one of the thing, which I won't
do like a review of, but since probably I'm the
last person to see it. But I finally saw the
Lego movie. Oh, wow. Was that on Amazon as well?
No, one of my friends let me borrow it. Because
I finally upgraded to a Blu -ray player. So I'm
keeping up with the times, finally. Now it's
our game, the 4K Blu -ray. Well, I got the really
good one I thought ahead this time. And I got
a really top -notch Sony Blu -ray player that
does 4K upscaling. And it's got the built -in
Wi -Fi so I can watch Netflix. Amazon stuff right
on my TV and it's pretty sweet. So But yeah,
I checked out the Lego movie on the blu -ray
and I do I love the blu -ray. It's like it's
so clear It's awesome. But Lego movie was a lot
of fun. It was it was pretty funny and I remember
not being able to see it when it came out for
whatever reason and I was kind of disappointed
because everyone was saying how good it was and
was that was that in 2015 or 14 last year 20
2014 Oh, 14, okay. So yeah, I was kind of happy
I finally got to see that. And I was trying to
pick out, like I didn't know much about it before
watching it, so I was trying to pick out the
voice actors as I was going. So I'm like, okay,
lead guy, Chris Pratt. I'm like, Elizabeth Banks,
Morgan Freeman. I'm picking out all the guys,
it was pretty funny. Jonah Hill and Cheyenne
Tate. I love, what's that, guy who plays Batman,
Will Forte. I think. Yeah, Will Arnett. Will
Arnett. Man, I knew it was one of those guys.
I was going to get there eventually. He's great.
I was kind of worried, like in the beginning,
that it was more of like a kids movie. And like,
obviously it is kind of a kids movie, but it's
like, there's a lot of humor in there that like
a kid wouldn't pick up. Yeah. Like little subtle
things, like little comments that he makes and
stuff like that. It's pretty funny stuff. Very
cool. I mean that's it was like the year Chris
Brad because after that then he had guardians
and yeah, yeah drastic worlds and You can do
no wrong. Yeah. All right anything else before
we take a quick break All righty, we'll take
a quick break when we come back we're gonna kind
of just round off the year of 2015 and look forward
to what 2016 has in store It's showtime synergy

episode long podcast You can find showtime synergy
on iTunes and geek cast radio comm we are the
truly outrageous podcast that you want to be
listening to All right, and welcome back I remember
when 2015 was happening and there was so much
talk about all the kind of geek craziness that
was going on and movies TV shows Netflix series
Comic events, but uh, I was just curious, you
know You guys looking back at all the different
geek entertainment things that happened in the
past year kind of you know What did you think
of it? You think it was a good year to be a geek
any disappointments anything like that? well
in the past Five or Five or so years. I think
it's it's been really great to be a geek especially
on the comic book side Science fiction kind of
side of geekiness. I'm not sure if it's still
good to be ultra a smart geek because I've never
really been one but I think being a comic book
geek is definitely still a good thing. People
still love the movies and everything, I think.
I'm not sure if we'll see a decline in that in
a few years or not from oversaturation of the
market. But yeah, it's been pretty good. We've
got a lot of stuff out there to occupy us. I've
got so much stuff going on that I want to read,
watch, listen to that it's very tough to keep
up with that stuff. It's becoming a second job
to entertain myself. I know. That's why you have
a podcast, too. Like, oh, it's for the podcast.
I can't see the light of day today because I
have to do stuff for the podcast. But you brought
up Geek Mood. comic book movies. I know we actually
didn't have that many this year when we had Fantastic
Four, Avengers and Ant -Man. Are we counting
Fantastic Four? Yeah, barely. I guess even if
you want to count Kingsman, which is technically
a comic book movie. Kingsman was good. I liked
Kingsman. Looking at 2016 though. There is like
I don't know every comic book movie ever coming
out I don't know Chuck looking the comic book
movies this past year What did you what were
your thoughts and impressions of them Avengers
and Ant -Man? And I don't know if you've been
bothered with Fantastic Four or not No, I still
have not seen Fantastic Four. I would like to
at some point, but I'm waiting for The opportunity
that they will give me money to see it It's 50
could have been something and then it's the rest
happens and it's like, oh no, this isn't this
is the worst thing This is awful. And now I kind
of I kind of felt like that with the amazing
spider -man movies It wants to be a good movie,
but there's just a couple things that are totally
screwing it up I would say that those amazing
spider -man movies have much more going for them
than the Fantastic Four. Oh wow. Alrighty then.
Yeah, like let's just say Dr. Doom was better
represented in the first Fantastic Four film.
Well, I could see that I guess a little bit.
So you mean the maid for TV that was a better
Doctor Doom? Probably, honestly. That's probably
still the best. The Roger Corman one might be
the best one yet. You mean the throwing back
your seat to type faster? Exactly. That's the
key. The one where Reed Richards falls in love
with a baby. Yes, that was creepy. Oh, I forgot
about that. Please find that. If you have not
seen that, watch it, but watch it with a bunch
of friends. You will have an awesome time. Yeah,
it's pretty awful. Especially the part when Johnny
Storm turns in the human torch and it's like
animated. Oh my god. It's like bad, terrible,
early 90s CGI. I don't even call it CGI. It's
more like moving paper. It's pretty... But anyways...
It's TGI, terribly generated images. You know,
with Avengers this year, I felt like it... It
kind of came and went a lot quicker than I expected
and Ant -Man for sure Looking at you know, 2016.
We have Doctor Strange. We have Deadpool Batman
vs Superman apparently is coming out Civil War
as well, you know What movie out of all those
do you think you guys are the most or most looking
forward to? Deadpool Definitely Deadpool. Are
you more excited now finding that it's officially
gonna be rated R? Yes, that's always a good thing,
especially with Deadpool, since he's a little
bit naughty. Sorry to kind of butt in, but do
you see the awesome billboards they're making
that make Deadpool look like a romantic comedy?
Yeah, and I also like the the one especially
since I work at a photography studio of him Dressed
up like he's getting his senior photo done with
that blue background that every photographer
Uses and he's in this there's this sweater and
he's kind of like looking off to the side It's
like a three -quarter shot of his head. Oh I
saw it at the movie theater when we went to go
see Star Wars and I got a kick out of it nice
nice So I'm most looking forward to Deadpool.
Chuck, what about you? I would say definitely
Civil War. Easily my second favorite comic book
story of all time, so I'm kind of anxious to
see how it translates to the big screen. Obviously
my first, if you listen to this podcast, you
know what my first choice is, but it's the Infinity
Gauntlet story is my all -time favorite, but
Civil War is a close second. But yeah, there's
a lot of stuff. I don't know if Is Gambit still
on track to come out this year, too? I don't
know. Every week there's a different rumor, and
I don't even know if Channing Tatum... I feel
like he signed on and dropped off that movie
like 14 times, so I don't think it's coming out
this year. And yeah, but we do have X -Men Apocalypse
also coming out this year, so... Yeah, and uh...
Think dr. Strange in November, right? Yeah, we
are getting dr. Strange in November, which I
think might be the one I'm most looking forward
to just because it I'm curious to see how Marvel
handles a story like that. That's you know, that's
completely magic Thor, you know had magic elements,
but they can kind of hide behind it with science
fiction a little bit and more adventure But you
know, dr. Strange is 100 % like a magical guy.
So It's magic, you know. Do you think they're
going to go like, do you think they're going
to go heavy with the comedy in that or kind of
back off a little? That's a good question. I
don't know. Because they kind of throw me off
sometimes. Like, I didn't expect Ant -Man to
be as funny as it was. But I don't I don't see
them going that funny with Doctor Strange. I
don't know. It would be hard considering that
character. I don't know. That's a good question.
It does seem like they do insert a lot of comedy
But I think the only one that I would didn't
have that well even like winter soldier had comedic
moments I'm sure there'd be they'll be comedic
moments, but maybe just like Wong is gonna be
a total cut -up you guys The ancient one Dormammu
is gonna be just like a laugh riot. Yeah, did
you hear they got they got Sinbad to play Dormammu?
Think they'll probably treat it relatively seriously
unless it's like a They treat them like a fish
out of water story or something like that We
was like showing up to the 7 -eleven with magical
robes on or something, but I hope not Because
I feel there's like gonna be that really serious
moment where he has Raised in the hospital and
his hands are all damaged and he can't be doctor
anymore. I Don't feel like that tone will be
kind of consistent throughout. Maybe maybe not
I know it's we'll see we'll see for sure. There
isn't curious one though Well, I guess we'll
see what the first trailer how they'll handle
it but considering it's coming after Civil War
I wonder if it that I wonder if that'll change
the tone of comic book Marvel comic book movies
where it gets a little bit more serious where
that could go and we didn't talk about it But
like the we do have X -Men apocalypse coming
out I thought apocalypse look a lot better in
the trailer than they did in those photos, but
something about it to me just Considering Apocalypse
is like one of my favorite villains. I don't
know. I just I'm worried about that movie a great
deal. I think it looks awesome so far, but the
only thing I kind of Not sure about is like him
using magneto is one of the horsemen and I'm
guessing that's probably a well thought -out
thing and you know, they're doing it on purpose
and everything but it's just kind of weird thinking
like someone of such I guess intestinal fortitude
like you would succumb to serving a character
like that it's kind of like I don't take you
back at first but I'm guessing that's a well
-calculated maneuver and will probably look like
a stroke of genius once you watch the movie we'll
see I wonder if it'll be like some sort of mind
control or something like that, like they had
with Wolverine in the comic when he became, was
it Death? He became Death for a little bit. Yeah,
I think so, yeah. He became Death and I think
he became War as well. Don't quote me on that.
And then he became Bub. He did. Then he became
Old Man Logan again and they killed, yeah, that's
a lot going on with that. You did bring up Civil
War and... Of course, you know Marvel being this
company all about synergy. They are also doing
a comic book series You saying Civil War was
one of your favorite? Well, they're gonna try
to continue it with I don't know if you saw the
Civil War 2 looks though instead of though it
being captain Civil War 2 electric boogaloo Which
would be amazing if that was? That was a title,
but uh, I don't know what the major conflict
is going to be I was trying to read up on it
a little bit But seems like it's gonna be coming
out of secret war I guess they can't why they
can't not use that title for 18 different stories.
I don't know but anyways, so is this like Like
I'm confused because I haven't been reading secret
wars I was kind of waiting till It comes out
in like a collected edition and I could just
read the whole thing at once because with big
stories I hate being strung out over the weeks
because I forget stuff. Yeah Oh, this has been
strung out over the entire year charge. Yeah,
it's going way too far The stories are all over
the place. There's no It's just confusing as
hell the timeline and the Marvel you at this
point Like without giving anything away to me.
Are they doing like a full reboot kind of like
DC did with the new 52? No, it's weird. Well,
I haven't read the last issue of Sequel War.
I think it just came out Yeah, I think maybe
this Wednesday even because I was at the comic
book store last week and they didn't have it
But yeah, it's it's very confusing. They've already
moved on to this supposed new universe if they
have already did. And it's it's kind of confusing
of how did everything end up like this after
the end? So it's it's all very confusing and
muddy at this point. So this Civil War two will
take place in sort of this new universe, I guess.
It's a new universe that's still very much like
really similar to the old one. Yeah. Really,
what they did was get rid of. The ultimate universe
and then kind of take elements of that Yeah,
like miles morales is in uh, the the proper marvel
you like so he's he's kind of taken over regular
spider -man's role while the spider -man peter
parker has kind of moved on and become less less
angsty I guess because he's he's now uh He's
kind of the tony stark now. Yeah, it's weird.
It's hard. Like you said, it's hard to explain
because it's Technically the new universe has
started but secret war is not even over yet.
So we don't even know How we got to where we're
at? And this is why comics are weird is because
it's like it's so it's really confusing but it's
it's a different universe but a lot of the same
continuity from the past is still there like
Rogers is still old Steve Rogers Falcon still
Captain America Thor like they've carried over
a lot of the same stuff So it just seems like
the the biggest change is that a couple characters
from the ultimate universe came over To the new
universe and you know, uh the thing is on guardians
of the galaxy like the fantastic forest gone
I don't know if that was just more so because
of the movie. So it's like let's forget that
ever happened. But uh Yeah, it's yeah and deadpool
is part of the avengers now and he's kind of
like 18 bank rolling them. Yeah And he's bank
rolling them, which is very bizarre at this point.
He's got his own mercenary group. It's like mercs
for hire Yeah, which they're starting a new comic
on that too even so they're they're really trying
to Get their money's worth from Deadpool. So
I I'm not sure I think there's a central character
at the heart of this one coming up But I don't
know. It's hard to see cuz it's Falcon is on
Iron Man's side who's Captain America, but I'm
not I'm not sure so Yeah, I don't know if we
answered your question Chuck or made it more
complicated made it more complicated For sure.
I will say though i've really liked secret wars.
I thought it's been really good so far, but it's
just been It's been too long too long and like
too confused. It's just the timeline makes no
sense. It makes no sense They're also doing a
huge x -men crossover this summer too x -men
apocalypse war or something like that that's
coming out that's supposed to again being apocalypse
movie coming out they're trying to tie into that
as well so that's you're gonna have two big marvel
events coming this this summer so interesting
enough confusion left to keep up we talked a
lot about about movies what about uh tv shows
any i know we've always talked about jessica
jones and daredevil any other past tv shows this
year that you really found yourself liking i
know we've talked about mando high castle anything
else that you know really stood out for you in
2015 Daredevil is definitely the best Marvel
Netflix show going on. What about Agent Carter?
Agent Carter was also very good. I can't wait
for that. That's coming out in the second season
of that in five days. So keep an eye out for
that. I'll definitely try and keep up with that
one because that was the one show that I caught
on TV all the way through, which is a huge accomplishment
for me. I've only watched the first two episodes.
I don't know if it's coming out now with like
chat, but hopefully I might catch the one. You're
a fan of Agent Carter, Trek? Oh, yeah, I loved
it. I think like, obviously, you know, I'm a
huge fan of the DC TV shows, but I felt like
Agent Carter was right up there with them. I
thought it was... Was pretty much everything
that I was hoping agents of shield would be it
was like that good and agents of shield was just
a huge letdown for me, but There was there's
obviously some high points and stuff like that,
but it was overall disappointment, but agent
Carter was Everything I was hoping for that was
awesome. I was a huge fan of that Nice, I see.
I'm so I'm assuming you're both gonna be checking
out that in the Also the with the new DC or WB
show the it's Legends of tomorrow legends of
tomorrow today. I'm actually really excited for
that too because they have sort of this hodgepodge
band of characters that they threw together and
along with a new character rip hunter and you
know they kind of do little time traveling and
stuff and this is like a good time travel story
you guys know that yeah i know right yes because
they have uh rory who also played uh i forget
his real name but uh he was the character rory
on doctor who he was kind of a companion man
all these hoovie connections yeah right all these
who's from who you got You got Karen Gillian
in Guardians of the Galaxy. You got David Tennant
and Jessica Jones. And now you've got the dude
Rory. I don't know his real name is now in D
.C. So I guess that's a place to go to get your
career started. But I was also I was also very
happy with how Flash developed, I guess, at the
end of season one and then the beginning of season
two. I was very pleased with that. And I'm super
excited to see how. Season two continues with
zoom because when zoom first appeared he was
like the most terrifying villain I've ever seen
on screen Yeah And I think arrow is kind of finding
its way back slowly but surely still some some
problems with it, but And I think you guys should
go back and watch the first season of Gotham,
because I got past that Balloon Man episode,
and I finished up that. And it was actually a
lot better than I think it was given credit for.
Have you watched season two at all? I have not
watched season two. I just finished season one.
Once again, if it's on Netflix, that's how I'm
watching it. Oh, yeah. It does have that weird
Netflix deal going on, too. So that's interesting.
I was looking looking forward to seeing like
what in 2016 TV shows are coming out and it's
hard to say because you know a lot of TV shows
are still in development, but uh, I forgot that
uh, you know another iconic 90 shows coming back
with Fuller House on Netflix Do you think any
of you guys will be checking that out at all?
Don't care. You're not gonna check out the the
new adventures of Kim and Gibbler No, I don't
give a shit. Did you watch that at all growing
up, the Full House? I did, and then I did something
really creepy to the guy who plays Joey. I still
feel bad about it to this day, and I can't really
look at him. When I was in college, he did a
comedy show down at Wilkes University, which
isn't that far away from where Chuck and I live,
and I went to go see it with a bunch of friends
from... high school kind of days uh went and
showed and i got uh not bullied but kind of peer
pressured into doing something which was scream
out at dave coulier alanis morissette If you
don't know what that's about, apparently the
very angstron song that she wrote to somebody
was apparently about him because apparently they
had a relationship and apparently she got sent
to the hospital because he pumped her with so
much of his... Fluids, I guess you would say.
So, yeah, I said Alanis Morissette. He instantly
called me out on it. He goes, oh, nice guy in
the hat. And he's like, yeah, say it and then
hide behind your hat, which is exactly what I
did. And I do I don't do well with that kind
of stuff. But yeah, I regret it to this day.
So you're that guy yeah, I was I was a heckler
for once and I regretted it so I'm sure if he
if he Knew you now he would forgive you and he
would realize that you were just being a Kid
and didn't know any better. So yeah, I can't
I can't If I see him on TV or something, I instantly
have to change the channel. All we have to do
is just get in contact with him somehow. Maybe
write him a fan letter. Sincere apology. We'll
send him an autograph talking in circles picture.
And it'll be cool. I appreciate it. I'm sure.
Yeah, I I don't know, Chuck. Any interest in
Fuller House? A little bit. I may check it out.
I got to say that, you know, the Tanner daughters
are looking pretty good nowadays. But other than
that, I don't know. I did like that show a lot
when I was a kid growing up. Kind of curious
to see what they're going to be doing. What's
the basis of the show going to be? What's it
about? So I'm kind of curious about that. But
if it sucks in the beginning, I'll probably just
give up on it. So I don't know. I had the feeling
it's going to be like a... Girl Meets World was
the Boy Meets World where I watched an episode
of it and then questioned my life decisions and
never watched it again. So it's like, why am
I watching this? I've tried to watch that a couple
times and I just can't do it. I know. Like I
watch it for like five minutes and I'm like,
all right, that's enough. This is clearly a show
meant for teenage girls and that is not me So
I like when I see like someone i'll be like,
oh there's tapanga. That's cool And then but
like 90 of the show is about the new people and
i'm like, I don't care about this Yeah, I really
don't want to watch a teenage girl trying to
land a date with his her Middle school crush.
I'm like I don't know. It's not worked for me.
I am okay with that I'm kind of curious Samantha
B who was on The Daily Show is getting a show
on TBS called full front full fun trail Which
I'm kind of curious about and see how that is
an agent you see season 2 of agent Carter Looks
like it might be quite good. So yeah agent Carter.
I can't wait for I Did I did see some interesting
comics that are coming out? I don't know. Have
you guys any of you read? the Star Wars comics
from Marvel that have come out? Yeah, I'm collecting
just plain titled Star Wars, and I believe that's
it, because I'm trying to cut back a little bit.
Another coming up with some more miniseries this
year, and I know they haven't released all the
titles But they did indicate they're making a
mini series dedicated to po Dameron, which I'm
looking forward to I might check that out to
see if it's it might be apparently be a prequel
comic but that I've like the main Star Wars story
some of this some of the side ones. I've not
been that crazy about like they had one for Princess
Leia, which was okay, and I Like that one it
had Terry Dotson artwork. That was my main main
thing for buying that Yeah, I was right. The
story was kind of man. The Chewbacca one was
okay. Lando was It's kind of cool, too, is that
this is also going to mark the first time ever
that a female is writing for The Punisher. Becky
Cloan is going to be starting a new Punisher
series coming out this year. So seeing how that
works out. Well, we already had a woman director
on it, so we'll get a woman writer. Yeah. Have
you ever listened to that? How did this get made
episode? Yes, I did. That was that was very interesting
to listen to. I highly recommend listening to
that one. It also had Patton Oswald, which was
great. It doesn't make you completely look at
that movie differently. Still not a good movie,
but it makes me look at it differently. Yeah.
And then lastly, Jonathan Hickman is doing a
Black Panther series. I really liked his treatment
of Black Panther and New Avengers and Secret
War. So I'm really looking forward to that because
I've kind of been liking everything he's doing.
So I know anything else you guys are looking
forward to in 2016 that we can talk about. I'm
looking forward to more Brian Kayvon made stuff.
Paper Girls is really great if you ask me. I'm
looking forward to the continuation of Harrow
County, which is by Dark Horse, which is a great
horror comic. Is that written by him as well?
No, that's written by somebody else. I don't
know the name offhand, but it's very well done.
The art's kind of on the simplistic side, but
it's very spooky, and I'm looking forward to
see where that goes. Other comic books anything
by Amanda Conner has been really great her Harley
Quinn stuff has been really great and Anything
that she's really been involved in Starfire has
been really good I've seriously gotten into a
lot of Amanda Conner stuff this year and Batman's
been kind of going downhill a little bit for
me, but hopefully that that starts to pick up
again from Scott Snyder And I'm trying to think
anything else Yeah, I've kind of liked what they've
done this past year with the whole Surprisingly
with the whole commission or Gordon thing. I
don't know. I think I would but I ended up really
enjoying it Yeah, oh and also Batgirl has been
really great Chuck anything you're looking forward
to in 2016 that we talked about? Yeah, I guess
just one thing as far as comic -wise. I'm looking
forward to the third and final release in a series
of original graphic novels by Jim Starlin. That'll
actually be coming out in April, I believe. It's
one of his Thanos stories. It's called Thanos
Infinity Finale. There was, like I said, two
other... Volumes previous to that the infinity
revelation the infinity relativity and Thank
God a more simpler name the infinity finale But
I always enjoy a Joy reading Starland's stuff
with Thanos because that's his his character
and I think he raised it the best and I enjoy
kind of taking it up to him at the At the comic
cons and having them sign it and getting some
commentary on it. That's always good time. So
Yeah, I have not read those but you've said great
things about it So maybe I need to need to pick
them up if you're not into like the deep space
stuff It's it might not be for you. But like
it's like some really out there stuff. So You
have to you have to be like a good Thanos fan
or warlock fan or just a cosmic fan in general,
I guess Interesting I wonder if we'll get any
more cosmic stuff with dr. Strange considering
like he does he does have some ties to a lot
of cosmic characters So that will be interesting
All right, anything else you wanted to talk about
that? 2015 2016 I just want to mention that uh,
I was probably one of the few that was Extremely
pleased with Terminator Genesis movie Nice, I
did I ended up watching that and I and it was
much better than I expected. I think it was nearly
deserving of the like Fritral hatred to God.
Yeah Clark's in that one, right? She is I highly
recommend that You're in no position to recommend
that yeah, I haven't seen it at all But no, I
I agree it was not deserving of the hatred that
it got I remember when we You know, we talked
about it way back when after I saw it and I think
I vigorously defended it and some some listeners
came to my aid and and agreed with me. So that
was pretty cool. But, yeah, I was I was really
happy with that. And I actually got that movie
for Christmas and I was playing it on the on
the Blu -ray player. And it looks pretty great,
too. I know a lot of people. It has Emilia Clarke
in it. Of course, it looks great. A lot of people
are harping on the special effects in that movie
for some reason. I don't really understand that,
but. See, I like that. And obviously, you know,
we talked about Jurassic World and stuff, too.
I was a big fan of that. And I love pretty much
anything. Chris Pratt, he's one of my new favorite
guys. So I know one movie you talked about last
week that I also caught up with was Creed. And
that I mean, that's me. We might be the surprise
of the year. I mean, I. expected to be pretty
good because I like the director's first film,
Fruitville Station, but man, like that, like
I agree with you. I think that might be the best
Rocky movie since the first one. Yeah. Stallone
is desorbing of his Oscar nomination, so. Yeah.
Which is not expected to say that a year ago.
I feel like they could have just skipped Rocky
five and six and just did this one. It's like
this is the movie we've been waiting for kind
of. Yeah, yeah. It well actually I kind of liked
Rocky Balboa, but you know I could see it does
kind of you know push push the line a little
bit when you have a 65 year old man standing
toe -to -toe with a boxer in his prime, but you
know Yeah, and five was just I don't know I apologize
to anyone that's a big fan of Rocky five, but
To me that was just an abomination. I think even
I think the only big fan of rocky five was tommy
gun He's like that's me yeah, uh movie wise with
2015 too, which was kind of interesting was just
like Oddly, it was like a resurgence of Westerns.
There was like a lot of them, Heathly, Bone Tomahawk,
The Salvation, which was one with Matt Mickelson
that came out really earlier in the year. Also,
Slow West. To my dad, they will never be as good
as the old ones. I don't know. Some of them can
give them a run for their money. I would, Chuck,
if you have Amazon, Slow West is currently streaming
for free on Amazon. It's only 90 minutes, and
I really like that movie a lot. Sorry, Michael
Fassbender. Like the Western genre a lot. I was
kind of happy to see like a resurgence last year
I kind of hope that trend continues, but I'm
not sure if it'll catch on at all. It's played
out for me Yeah, the Revenant and also if you
want to call that a Western even though it's
Canadian mostly they're in Canada. So northern
maybe I'm not considering the reverend to really
well and Heafily it did. Okay, and I think you
might see some more. I think you always it'll
You always get at least one or two here and there
so Yeah, I can. Greg, your comment about like
your dad saying that they're not as good as the
old ones. Like, I could definitely see that,
like, because I saw the same thing, like my grandpa
used to say that, like, even with like, even
like what we consider some of the classic, like,
Lenise Wood movies, my grandfather would be like,
ah, it's like, why are they always blowing stuff
up? These aren't as good as the old John Wayne
ones. Just like every generation does that like
I can see us I can see us one day complaining
like 30 years from now complaining about comic
book movies and be like that's not as good as
Avengers or Iron Man like What was that that
movie that they did it was a remake of a John
Wayne one? And it's it's not coming to my head
Yeah, my dad watched the new one and he said
the old one is still by far the best one You
couldn't tell him like that. The new one was
better in any which way. He would not agree with
you at all I think it's just whatever you grew
up with. It's like whatever you see first Like
that's what you kind of attached to or whatever
I don't know because I like the remake better
honestly, but I still enjoyed the original so
Yeah, he said the little girls, the one in the
original one was a better actor. Oh, that I can't
agree with. Me personally, like the like, you
know, I'm a huge fan of the Tombstone movie.
Yes. Like if they made a Tombstone movie like
20 years from now. I probably would like kind
of look down upon it like I would try to be fair,
but like deep down, I'd be like, yeah, you know,
like I feel like that's just always going to
happen no matter what. That movie would not be
your huckleberry. Right, right. Well, they did
kind of, you know, make another Tombstone movie
in Wired Earp, but you know. Oh, the Kevin Costner
one? Yeah, yeah. Yeah, that was all right. It
was okay. Yeah, that was long though. Wasn't
it that like a super long movie? Kevin Costner
doesn't know how to make short movies. I think
it was like four hours long, I want to say. I
don't even know. It was probably around over
two and a half hours. Just like Dances with Wolves
and stuff like that. I thought it was two parts.
Like I remember getting like a two part. set
for that or something. I don't know. I haven't
seen it in a long time. Like the Titanic VHS
that was two tapes or whatever. Yeah, yeah. Yeah,
I mean, there's a lot going on in 2015 or a lot
went on in 2015, looking forward to 2016. So
we should have some lot to talk about in this
upcoming year for sure. today uh when we're recording
this it's the day that we found out that uh alan
rickman died which is oh yeah which is kind of
