About this Episode

The hosts wrap up Marvel's Phase 2 by discussing Ant-Man, which they found to be an unexpectedly entertaining heist-comedy that serves as a perfect palette cleanser after Age of Ultron. They praise the performances across the board, particularly Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas, and appreciate how the film balances humor with genuine character relationships—especially the parallel arcs of Scott Lang and Hank Pym both trying to redeem themselves in their daughters' eyes. While they acknowledge the villain Darren Cross is underdeveloped, they argue the film works better as a heist story than a traditional superhero narrative, and they rank it solidly in the middle of Phase 2's offerings.

Hey, I'm Bryce Carlson, writer of Hit and managing

editor at Boom Studios, and you're listening

to Talking in Circles. You are now on the inside

of what I like to call the circle of trust. We

are all connected in a great circle of life.

You know something, Bert? What? I think you and

I are going in circles. It feels like we're going

in circles. The circle is now complete. When

I left you, I was but the third. Now I am the

last. Because it's a circle. Yeah, we heard about

the circle. Yeah, that's what a million would

say. Hey, this is Chuck. This is Greg. And this

is Dan, and we are Talking in Circles, brought

to you by the Geekcast Radio Network, the podcast

that is now featuring a baby. I say that because

you might hear occasionally in the background

my son as I am on daddy duty during this episode

of the podcast, unfortunately. Three men and

a baby brought to you by a podcast. Exactly.

Everyone's favorite thing, right? Everyone loves

being next to crying babies on airplanes and

everything like that. So it should make for,

you know, a little bit more of an adventure in

my end. So you hear me running away really quickly

or being far away from the mic. Might just be,

you know, things going down. And but uh and today

Yeah, exactly today It's fitting as a as a baby

is joining us because we also talking about some

other small things in the realm of Ant -Man the

latest Marvel film that to be released But before

we get to that we have a bunch of things we want

to talk about Especially how things are going

with you guys. So have you how's your week been?

My week's been pretty boring. I really don't

have much exciting going on. Yeah, we're recording

this a little earlier than normal, so there's

even less time for nothing to happen. Yeah. I

mean, I had a training at work, if you guys want

to hear about that. That's exciting, yeah. It

was very exciting. It was all day and I had to

keep pushing the mouse on the laptop, so... To

wake it up from going to sleep. Because it also

too was falling asleep during the meeting. It's

like, oh jeez, yeah. I've been there. I've had

that going on. Greg, how's things going with

you? Uh, pretty good. I was over my boss's house

this past Sunday, and I helped him make a trash

can turkey, which was quite interesting. What

is a trash can turkey? Well, you're supposed

to dig down a hole and put down some bricks into

the hole, but we didn't. We just put a piece

of plywood on the grass because we didn't want

to mess up their grass. So you put a piece of

plywood down, some bricks on top of that, and

we put some aluminum foil between the bricks

and the plywood. Then we put more aluminum foil

on top of the bricks. Put a giant stick down

through the center of all that. put a nice ball

of styrofoam at the end of that so we could put

the turkey ass gets the stick up up it it gets

a stick up its ass nice nice very terrible turkey

we also put a rub and different seasonings on

the turkey but we have the the turkey on that

way then we flipped a metal trash can on top

of it and then we put charcoal around the edge

of it and charcoal on top of it Shit ton of lighter

fluid. We did not have enough the first time

we attempted to light it you have to have a shit

ton of lighter fluid on it and you just light

that sucker and Supposedly like a pound of turkey

for a pound of charcoal and once the charcoals

all Spent the turkey supposed to be done, but

it was a good thing that we stuck some probes

into the turkey So we could because you're not

supposed to remove the garbage can the entire

time that it's cooking So we just had some probes

stuck up underneath and running back through

the bricks so we were able to record the temperature

and we pulled it way before the charcoals were

done and we had a turkey. It was a little dark

on top and a little light on the bottom but the

internal temperature was good and it tasted delicious.

Does it taste better than your normal turkey?

Does it have a different flavor to it? The turkey

doesn't really taste any different. It's just

kind of in the way you season it, kind of, that

makes it taste different. It did leave the turkey

nice and juicy and everything, but I think it's

just another cooking method, kind of like a deep

-frying turkey, which I highly recommend, but

please do not burn your house. Yes, we do not

abrogate burning houses down. Not in the least.

It kind of reminds me of the way you're cooking

it. When I was in New Zealand, they would be

so volcanic that in certain areas you can actually

dig and you would bury food in like containers

and you know the sulfur within the area was strong

enough that you would actually cook the food

for you and you just come out dig it out and

eat it but also another experience I had during

that whole thing my boss's mother finally noticed

that I had a tattoo oh yeah and she she pointed

at me she goes what's that I thought she was

pointing behind me but apparently not I finally

figured out she was talking about my tattoo I'm

like oh new tattoo I got She goes, what is it?

I go, well, you know, I'm a comic book nerd.

It's a X -Men logo. She goes, oh, I thought it

was a Nazi symbol. Holy crap. Close enough. I'm

like, no, I'm like, it's kind of the farthest

thing away from a Nazi symbol, because I explain

the whole that the X -Men were kind of a meaning

for. Kind of minorities and how they were treated

and then kind of Later handed the first X -Men

movie where it was kind of treated more as a

coming out type of situation where Ian McKellen

Helped out with the scene where Bobby Drake came

out as a mutant to his parents and everything

So I explained that tour and hopefully I won't

get accused of being racist with the tougher

crowd so Yeah, wow. Yeah, there's What have you

said? Yes, like yes, it is. She's like tell me

too No, I had no idea we belong to the same club

Very cool. Yeah, I'm along there with you truck.

That's much has been going on with me at all

It's been my busy time of work. So I'm spending

most of my days long days at work, which sucks

That's not the most fun thing in the world Though

I did get an opportunity to watch DC animated's

latest film. I don't know if you guys saw anything

about it, but it's Justice League God and Monsters.

I've just seen advertisements. I have no idea

what it's actually about. It is this might be

a Superman story Greg that you might like because

it takes place like in an alternate universe

It is the good thing about its return of the

Bruce Tim animation that I personally prefer

more so than the latest the recent stuff they've

been doing with the DC animated films which is

more anime based but it is an alternate universe

where Things are different it focuses on three

main characters the big three the Superman Wonder

Woman and Batman, but it opens up with the classic

Superman scene, you know, with Jor -El and Superman's

mother trying to have Superman escape, but there's

a slight difference in this, where it ends up

being that Clark Kent, or Superman, is not the

son of Jor -El, but rather that of Zod. He ends

up putting his DNA in there instead. So in the

end, you know, I'm just putting his DNA in there.

I should have preface that by saying it's like

They're building a baby. It's like an embryo

baby that they're making as they're sending it

out. So and Then he also lands and not with the

Kent's but actually with an immigrant family

Makes a little bit of difference and then Wonder

Woman is is not Wonder Woman She's not an Amazon,

but she's the character that comes from apocalypse

She's part of the forces that oppose Darkseid

and she ends up coming to Earth and then Batman

is actually not Bruce Wayne, but he is almost

like a vampire Batman, because it's like a take

on the guy who becomes Man -Bat. Instead of becoming

Man -Bat, he becomes this other character that

resembles that of Batman. So, he has speed and

things like that, but also fangs, and this is

the justice league that actually kills people.

They're good, they're all on the good side, but

a little bit more bloody, and they'll, you know,

they'll not be afraid to, like, tear people apart

if they need to. I was I was thinking like okay.

This is just gonna be another alternate universe

where they go the the regular universe And you

know everything it's a Superman or Superman thing

But it actually isn't that at all if they stay

within this universe And I didn't know if you

guys know this but it's actually supposed to

be a lead -in to a new TV series it's supposed

to be coming out and live action or animated

animated, a new animated television series. Luckily,

there's not another live action CW series coming

out. Not that I'm against it, but there's like

a trillion of them. So, which is great because

as a fan of the Bruce 10 animation, I'm all for

seeing more of it. And it works, I think works

pretty well. It's one of the better DC animated

films we've seen. I think I personally have seen

since maybe Justice League Flashpoint. I think

that's been like ever since and they've been

kind of on a downward spiral. But this is not

nearly near the best, but I thought the characters

were interesting. I do wish they played with

The the difference is a little bit more but knowing

it's gonna be a TV series I guess they're just

keeping ground open for that because Superman

doesn't doesn't really get into his his past

all that much he doesn't at all act like your

normal Superman. He is pretty vicious, but He's

not like overly evil. It's it's almost I guess

if Superman had like the mentality of the Punisher

per se Not he's not as psychotic, but he doesn't

have an issue killing people Yeah, there's a

homeless guy it's Saturday night Yeah, exactly

and then of course like the part of it is that

there ends up being these real bad creatures

that are going around trying to frame the Justice

League for murders and they're like killing the

biggest scientists in the world and they're not

sure who it is so it goes down this plot line

of trying to Figure out who that is and whatnot

and then like it starts turning the everyone

against the Justice League So you have that take

it's it's a common story. You've seen a lot,

but just in a different universe with Characters

that almost maybe shouldn't be the leaders of

the free world or these these heroes because

of what they're capable of So I think it makes

that argument even stronger But I would definitely

recommend it to anyone who's a fan at DC animated

movies or the old Justice League stuff it it

feels very much in that universe and It was great

kind of come back to it is there's a little bit

of nostalgia there So I will definitely be watching

the TV series when it comes out kind of a voice

talent that they have on there. Oh That's a good

question The guy who plays Batman was actually

Michael C. Hall Powell The guy was Dexter. Oh

Michael C. Hall. Yeah, sorry Michael C. Hall

played Batman the guy who played Dexter he did

it not being Batman It makes it hard to judge

but I think he fit the character that he was

playing really well Benjamin Bratt was Superman

and he was actually pretty good and Tamarin Taylor

was Wonder Woman. I'm not really familiar with

her, but I thought she was she fit the character

really well. I thought she was actually one of

the better woman voices I've heard. So no Kevin

Conroy or anything like that in this one? No,

these characters are nothing. They don't try

to make them just different versions of the characters

you know. They're really just Superman, Batman,

or woman in name only and pretty much everything

else is different about them. There's elements

that are the same, but it is an alternate universe

that I think forges its own identity. So how

are the costumes vastly different? Yeah, Batman

doesn't really have a cape he has like it's almost

more like the reminiscent of Batman Beyond in

a way with the he had like red glowing eyes and

It's more tight fitted like almost like a tracksuit

Superman's just in a guy with a jacket on he's

just like he has no ass or anything like that

he's just a guy in an overall jacket and you're

almost like a There's a dude walking down the

street. Of course. She's a goatee cuz that's

when you know, he's kind of evil because that's

the key And one woman looks nothing like Wonder

Woman. She has this white headdress. She looks

like a character you would see coming out of

Apocalypse with the very edgy clothing. Not edgy

as in the sense that there's not there, but everything

has an edge to it. It looks like it's from a

world that just looks like it's all about pain.

Like Michael Bay just made it? Exactly exactly

not to that extreme, but a little bit a little

bit like that She her helmet almost looks like

like stripes from the X -Men. So But and she's

kind of this cool sword she wields and whatnot

so It's I think a step in the right direction

for DC animated films again, you know, they've

all they had the crowning jewel They were like

so much better than Marvel, but it started going

downhill for them But I'm glad they're gonna

pick in a back up at least in my opinion I know

some people might differ speaking of stepping

in the right direction for DC animated Did you

hear the the news that they're going to be making

an animated movie about the killing joke? I did

hear that I did that's intriguing. I'm glad they're

doing that I don't what how do you feel about

that? I'm pretty excited because I know we talked

about that was like one of our first episodes

right and we talked about that Yeah, and I really

like that comic. I'm I'm kind of looking forward

to getting that Do you feel like Kevin Conway

and Mark Hamill's voices would lend okay to that

type of story? Oh, yeah, definitely I really

hope they get them, actually. If they don't,

it's not the end of the world, but I just really

enjoy hearing them and it kind of keeps it consistent

for me because their voice is on everyone. Do

you think they can go to the length that the

TV series goes? Or the comic actually went? I

think so. I think they could get close. I mean,

some of them I've seen are pretty... You know

pretty crazy they show blood and everything and

yeah, I mean this one's pretty violent too. It's

definitely like PG -13 for sure I mean just as

the flashpoint I think was a deserving of like

an R rating that thing had like literally edge

blowing off and like looking through the skull

of someone who's just been shot in the face,

so Yeah, I forgot about that Connor sounded really

interested about face. Yeah, he's all about faces

going But Chuck I know that you did also get

an opportunity to see See a recent movie and

that was a terminated as we actually touched

upon it not too long ago So I've heard differing

opinion about it. So I'm curious to see what

you thought of it. I know we did mention to there

was I heard some differing opinions and Things

I was reading online, a lot of people were putting

it down and everything, but I went to see it

with some co -workers and we all pretty much

fancy ourselves to be Terminator fans and I gotta

say I really really loved this movie. I enjoyed

how it got me to think the characters were just

as likeable to me if not more than in the past.

I'm thinking of something like the the annoying

kid from Terminator 2 Judgment Day. The kid playing

John Connor. I really don't get what people are

saying putting this movie down like so much.

I don't see it at all whatsoever. I had no problem

with the acting in it. I know people were harping

on that. Saying, you know, I read this article

today actually that was pretty harsh on it and

they were saying how, you know, the acting was

terrible and it's nothing like the original Terminator

movie where the acting of Linda Hamilton and

together plays Kyle Reese that, you know, carried

through the whole movie. I'm like, wait a minute,

I really don't think anybody has ever said that

Terminator, the original Terminator movie was

the pinnacle of like acting. I don't get that,

but I think the acting was just fine in this.

I mean, it's more about the story. If you get

caught up in the story and engrossed in it, you're

really going to have a good time. How was my

girl, Amelia Clark? she was really good actually

and I I had really had no prior exposure to her

because I don't watch Game of Thrones or anything

like that. I haven't seen her in anything else

and I gotta say I was pretty impressed. I liked

her a lot. She really came across as kind of

badass like Sarah Connor would be. I'm guessing

that's kind of how she is in Game of Thrones.

She doesn't start off badass in Game of Thrones,

but she definitely becomes badass as it progresses.

Yeah, that's that's in her wheelhouse, I think.

Yeah. Yeah, she really seemed to like. To definitely

take off from like the starting point, like she's

sort of a take charge type of character, and

I thought she adapted to it really well. But

like I said, I really like the story. I like

how the aspects of the past films were woven

into it. I thought I thought I paid homage to

those very well while still keeping those things

relevant to the current story. I like the action

scenes as well. I thought things made sense logically

for the most part. They did a good job of explaining

things like things like why Arnold looks old

and he has gray hair and some things like that.

I felt like they kind of knew the audience would

be questioning certain things so they tackled

them appropriately so that you could kind of

get past it and then just enjoy the actual story

being told. Let me ask you... Like me, I still

haven't watched the two movies that Dan let me.

Would I be able to watch this one without watching

those other two movies and still be able to get

things that are going on? You could, but honestly

I wouldn't recommend it. Yeah, I think it would

be a better experience if you watched the other

ones first. Particularly one and two. I think

that's really all you need to watch. Do you feel

the end of the trailer looked like it gave a

lot away? Do you feel like that actually happened,

especially like the last one? Especially with

like John Connor's character? Did that kind of

ruin a big surprise in the film? It would have

if I had seen the last trailer. I did not see

the last trailer because I caught a glimpse of

something online where the director was kind

of ticked off that things were being given away.

I was actually able to avoid seeing a lot of

trailers and TV clips online and stuff because

I kind of wanted to be, you know, surprised when

I went to see it. So if you're an unfortunate

person that saw the trailer, then maybe it would

have ruined it a little bit. I'm not sure. But

you know, if people were saying, too, that like

the way things transpire in this, it kind of

erases what happened in the past films. But I

really don't think that's the case because, you

know, it ends up talking about multiple timelines

being created because of this very specific important

event that happened and stuff so they kind of

present it in this very open -minded way where

like you can really take it a lot of different

ways and it's kind of open to your interpretation

of time travel and your understanding of different

timelines branching off and stuff like that so

it's kind of fun to speculate. you know, through

it and everything and think about, you know,

what would have happened if this didn't happen

or stuff like that. I had a good time just kind

of thinking through that stuff. So it was kind

of the first remake of Star Trek -esque kind

of situation going on. Yeah, I mean, kind of

like it's, you know, it's acknowledging things

from the past, but like still creating this new

stuff and it's not saying that we're like necessarily

overwriting it, but... You know, you're not replacing

it or anything. It's just sort of a different...

It's a new edition. Yeah, it's like sort of a

different timeline that happens. So, and some

other things, people were saying there were too

many villains in it and that they were weak.

I really don't get that. I mean, to me, the villain

is Skynet. And all the other obstacles are sort

of pawns, you know, basically. You can't lose

sight of what they're trying to do. They're trying

to stop the rise of machines in general. That's

the goal and that's the general villain in my

opinion. So like these sort of other characters

that they have to fight or something like that.

Like yeah that's a villain but it's sort of a

plot device to kind of take a vehicle to carry

it along. Like the main villain is Skynet and

the machines as a whole. So if you kind of think

of it that way I think it's a little bit easier

to take. And you know, like I've mentioned before,

talk about time travel. I'm a big fan of time

travel in movies because I'm kind of curious

how different movies handle it and I wasn't disappointed

with this. I liked how they used it here. I think

we get more of an explanation about the strategic

use of time travel by Skynet and also by The

Rebellion than we do in any of the other films.

So I really enjoyed seeing that aspect of it.

It wasn't... It wasn't just like a non -stop

action thriller, like there was some thought

put into it. Yeah, definitely. I mean, I will

have to watch it myself and give you a few different

feedback. It could be one of those things where

I think I heard someone or someone wrote a comment

that people went into it wanting to hate it,

and that kind of maybe just why everyone hated

it so much, because another trailer shouldn't

go over well, but. Like, and people are comparing

it to the first one and the second one, which,

yeah, they were great. But they're not flawless

either. I mean, there's still a lot of things

that you could find wrong with them if you look

close enough. Doesn't have Amelia Clarke. Right.

And like you said, if you're going in wanting

to hate it, then you probably are, because you're

going to be looking stuff to find wrong with

it. If you're going in looking to have fun, you're

probably going to have a good time. Definitely.

Definitely. And Greg, I know you haven't been

watching movies lately, but I think you mentioned

before we started that you were watching a couple

Couple TV shows. So what are you been catching

up with? Yeah, I finally caught up on season

2 of shield Wasn't as good as the first season.

I think a lot of people have Said that and I

would agree. It was still a lot of fun and everything

I don't want to give too much away because I'm

not sure who's seen it or whatever. They were

building up to the Inhumans and I don't know,

I just felt like, I don't know why it didn't,

but it didn't feel like it really fulfilled the

Inhumans for me. Maybe that will be better done

with the movie that will be coming out about

the Inhumans, but so far it's just kind of been...

On the inhuman side, I do enjoy that Sky's mother

who is revealed is played by a girl that Joss

Whedon likes to use. She was in Dollhouse. I

like the fact that she showed up again. So if

you're a fan of Joss Whedon and his work, that

kind of stuff is always cool to pick out people

that he likes to keep recasting throughout things.

But otherwise, It was enjoyable. I liked the

addition of Bobby Morris, Mockingbird, and I

liked the aspect of there being another shield

and Coulson going up against that. But I kind

of liked Hydra is the main enemy the most, and

they definitely got played off a lot because

they got taken out easily, I believe, in this

early on. So I don't think that's really a spoiler

alert since they got taken out pretty easy. They're

still around. No Hydra. They'll come back and

everything. And it sounds like it will come back.

And I definitely love seeing they did. They definitely

put his name back in the evil guy. Do you know

who I'm talking about, Chuck? The boyfriend kind

of to sky. He was a good agent. Oh, yes. Right

on the tip of my tongue. Right. Oh my god, Ward.

Ward, yeah. I like the fact that Ward is kind

of still there in the background doing stuff,

and you have no idea what's going through his

head. So I like that aspect of it. But otherwise,

it was just kind of alright. I'm hoping they

kind of do better in the third season. What did

you think of it, Chuck? I know you've seen it.

I thought it started off really strong. I think

I mentioned it. at one point, maybe earlier this

year or something, how like the first few episodes

are kind of exciting. Yeah. And I'm thinking

about like the the absorbing man. Yes. Cameo

in the first couple. That was actually pretty.

Yes, it was. I agree with that. Yeah, they don't

really bring him back at all. I thought he was

really good. And he's a cool character, like

I always liked him in comics. And I thought they

did a pretty cool job of putting his powers on

display. Yeah, it was much better than the Ang

Lee Hulk movie with Crusher Creel. Yeah, oh yeah.

Well, it always helps when you don't have, like,

you know, a drunk Nick Multi playing. But yeah,

I agree with everything you're saying there.

I also really liked the addition of Mockingbird

and I don't know if you're anything like me,

but I would actually love to see her on the big

screen. Yeah, like one of the Avengers movies

or something like that. I could totally go for

that. I like uh, what's her name? Adrian, Adrianne

Policki? Policki? Yeah. She was supposed to be

Wonder Woman at one point, I believe, in that

really slutty, like, Halloween costume that they

had her going for. Yeah, that pilot that never

really got off the ground. Yeah. But I like her.

I mean, I think she did a pretty good job on

the show. And the one thing that was kind of

annoying to me was, I understand it was a major

piece of drama in the show, but when they did

the thing between Fitz and Simmons, how he was

kind of like he totally lost his memory and then

he started getting stuff back and he was stuttering

and everything. Yeah, I felt like that kind of

was going away for him part way through the season,

like he wasn't doing as much, so I'm not sure

if it was him getting over it. It is the character

or it was the actor not playing it as much But

for a while there it kind of got annoying to

me like yeah Like I understand what they're trying

to do, but I thought it was kind of hindering

the show a little bit I mean, I don't Colson's

always good. He's always fun. Yeah, I Enjoy Clark

right? He's he's definitely the best part of

the show Chloe Bennett is also really good. I

enjoy her especially to look at Sorry for my

point of view there after the ladies um, but

uh, yeah, it was alright It wasn't the greatest

so I know they're supposed to be connections

with agents of shield and like age of Ultron

Did those make age old Ultron make any more sense?

So did you did though? Did you end up at least

appreciating that aspect of it? Really, I don't

think it really added anything to it for me.

Like it was just kind of some mentions of some

Pieces of earth falling back down like it really

didn't give as much as I think the Captain America

movie did with the end of the first season It

really didn't have an impact. It was kind of

just kind of more of mentions kind of like in

daredevil Cool. I did see that it season To did

get on netflix. So I don't know. I i'm hesitant

to Spend time watching but maybe I will I need

something to watch late at night when i'm feeding

because it might be something that I could if

they're on i've been watching like uh Like brush

slings. So that's um, it's just as mindless.

Maybe i've been uh, also since I finished watching

shield I also started on the the second uh season

of arrow. So Watch out for that How about have

you been enjoying that more? It's not as good

as the first season kind of like she really But

it's still pretty good How far along you and

she's not very far and I'm like on episode like

three or four something like that I'd end up

liking that a lot more than season two There

was also another Joss Whedon character in that

which has no connection, but a summer glow I

I have seen just very quickly in The second season

very quickly when you stalk her when she's not

looking It's not totally a crush, but she's cute.

Yes. I always confuse her and who is the other

person? The person that was going over at Fox

was that summer go out there. Oh, that's Eliza

douche. Yeah, I always confused Elijah you skew

and summer cloud I was gonna get those two confused

that's because I'm weird like that I guess but

Interesting enough as you were talking about

a Marvel property we will soon also talk about

one of the most recent Marvel properties that

come out in that Ant -Man and also kind of give

our thoughts of Marvel phase 2 as the book has

been closed and we're moving on to phase 3 but

we'll get to that after this quick break so we'll

see you in a bit. A soldier, the size of an insect,

the ultimate secret weapon. Scott, you're different.

Be skillful, agile, fast. I need you to be the

Ant -Man. Make sense? Oh my God! Awesome. The

suit has power. You have to learn how to control

it. When you're small, you have superhuman strength.

You're like a bullet. You tried to hide your

suit from me. Now, it's gonna blow up in your

face. Pick on someone your own size. There's

no reason to be scared. Oh, no, no. Daddy don't

get scared. Really? Alright and welcome back

and now we're finally gonna get into it the last

Marvel film before we get into phase 3 Ant -Man

There was tons of speculation going into this

before it came out a lot of talk about the Edgar

Wright leaving other directors coming on Almost

as much drama out of the film as there is in

it. Chucko. I'll ask you first With all the drama

did Ant -Man actually end up? living up to your

expectations or surpassing them or was it a disappointment

in your eyes? It actually ended up way surpassing

my expectations and that's mostly because I went

in with relatively low expectations. I definitely

watched like the trailers and everything but

I try not to do any like research or anything.

I didn't read too many articles about it or anything.

I just kind of wanted to go in not with high

hopes or anything and just kind of see what would

happen. And I gotta say I was actually blown

away. I know a lot of people were saying this

was gonna be Marvel's first flop and everything

and you know they're like who is Ant -Man this

is gonna be terrible but I mean I knew it would

be good because I kind of have trust in their

system and what they do but I had no idea it

would be this good. There's a ton of things I

liked about it. I know we can get into that and

everything but yeah my overall my overall feeling

like when I walked out of there it was just This

really, really fun thrill ride. There was lots

of comedy or laughing through the whole thing.

Everything made sense. Everything flowed well.

The characters were great. The acting was great.

And I really enjoyed it. Greg, do you share Chuck's

enthusiasm or are you a little more down on the

phone? I agree with Chuck completely. I went

in hearing all these first, the whole thing that

Chuck was talking about with Edgar Wright. all

the problems they were having and I'm like oh

this is gonna turn out awful with all this all

the stuff going on and then as I was going into

the movie I saw a lot of reviews of people that

reviewed it and saw the movie already and they

had like all good reviews and I agree with those

it was supposed to be this movie that wasn't

gonna do really well and it's actually Quite

endearing, quite well done, acting's well done,

there's great bits of humor in there. They take

it definitely levels beyond Honey I Shrunk the

Kids. They give you kind of little tidbits of

Honey I Shrunk the Kids in there, but then they

definitely surpass it, how they used it and how

they filmed it. No bowl of cereal, so, I mean,

that's one thing Honey Shrunk the Kids has. Yeah,

but we did have a Latino nudity almost which

totally makes up for the milk if you ask me Yeah,

we almost got to see Michael's pen. Yeah What'd

you think Dan? Well, I got to give the keeps

positive vibes going and I will get into maybe

where this ranks among the other Marvel films

but Like you Greg like I I was hearing a lot

of the positive ramblings And so my expectations

started getting a little bit higher than they

were based upon the trailer And ended up just

like I don't know it just felt good like it just

felt like I enjoyed being in this movie you enjoyed

watching it I was I it's what you couldn't see

me though. I was really small. Yeah You were

subatomic exactly so much time. That was the

only scene that I had a problem Interesting we

can get into that. I was wondering do like why

would they? end phase two with Ant -Man that

seems kind of weird like how can you end it with

just like a solo film of a minor character that

not many people are huge fans of but I think

it makes really sense because actually I think

it's a really good palette cleanser out of from

Age of Ultron it's the perfect counterbalance

to it because there's no way you're gonna match

Age of Ultron with Spectacle like there's no

way you were if you tried to put like an Iron

Man or Captain America I think it's just gonna

seem Strange it's gonna be not nearly as good

because you're looking at similar action just

smaller scale But with this you get smaller scale

action in a good way and a story that's much

more isolated It's a little bit more personal

intimate and had has a pretty good heart to it

You just have a story about a guy just trying

to make good for his daughter And it's you know,

maybe cliche, but I think it cliche in this instance

was a good thing and I think it led to a character

that was easy to get behind and like you guys

all mentioned that the performances overall were

really good it certainly has its problems which

we can get into uh but i would say it's uh it

sticks to the former moral formula and uh ends

up i think being a good way to end phase three

or end phase two to get in the phase three but

i know one of the the biggest complaints This

and it's almost commonplace when it comes to

Marvel films. It's the villain of Yellow Jackets

and or I forget is the actual character's name

of what what he becomes and They're in cross.

How did you guys feel about him? Does does he

kind of fall the same type of faults of other

Marvel villains where he's not very developed

and just kind of a basic character or? Ended

up actually liking him. I guess I was sort of

Sort of indifferent about him. I mean I I really

didn't pay a whole lot of attention to him I

guess he he was kind of just like sort of a vehicle

for me like it wasn't about him for me but I

mean I would definitely agree he's not the strongest

villain ever not even close but I agree with

you Chuck like he There wasn't a ton of scenes

with him He definitely comes off as a douche

when you first get introduced to him and then

it's kind of discovered. Oh, yeah, this guy is

like evil killing but like The the reason behind

him killing is a little wimpy I guess you would

say yeah They don't really give him a lot of

motivation of like, like, why do you hate Hank

Pym so much? You know, like, I know they kind

of touch on a little bit with, you know, how

he felt like a son to him, but he never really

treated him that way. But that seems kind of

like a lame excuse to just kind of start killing

people. Yeah. And the reason for him to get in

the suit in the first place was kind of seemed

like kind of a last resort ditch effort thing.

It wasn't to... to really get the power to, like,

take over everybody. It was just so he could

battle Ant -Man for the most part. Otherwise,

he was just some dude with a gun, I guess. A

cool gun that made people into this weird pink

junk, but, uh... The slime? Yeah, kind of. The

slime from Ghostbusters in the second one. Like

I said though, there's enough other stuff going

on like it was Ant -Man's story, you know yeah

definitely and it and it was him and his life

and his daughter and and Hank Pym and his daughter

and that was the story to me and like Like I

said, Darren Cross was just kind of there to

be you know, it was like they said it's a heist

movie Yeah, it's it's not necessarily a good

guy versus bad guy movie. It's a heist movie

Yeah, so in every heist movie you need the guy

that owns the thing they're trying to steal.

Yeah, I agree with that Chuck. To me he's just

kind of the guy, he serves his purpose and that's,

you know, it doesn't really bother me that he

was weak. But it's not like Ant -Man has a giant

rogues gallery to begin with. Right. Yeah, he's

definitely not known for a lot of great villains,

you know, being, I guess his biggest rogues would

be, well, Hank Pym's would be Ultron, who of

course can't be used, so. Kind of take away his

biggest baddie. Why, what happened all the time?

I don't know, it was weird. He had an age that

went away, I guess, you know. He was in vogue

with it in a way. It was a short age. Looking

at it, man, I mean, I think the biggest thing

was the mechanic of shrinking and how they used

that. How did you think that worked action sequence

-wise? Do you think they utilized that really

well? Do you think it could have been a little

bit more clever with what it did? Like, how did

we feel the... the use of Ant -Man's powers ended

up working within the movie. I think that was

a lot of, uh, it was more used for kind of fun

than it was used for, um, actiony type of things.

Yes, it was used for actiony things, but I think

it was first and foremost used for fun. Like

in the commercial, there's the fight scene and

Yellow Jacket is getting, uh, bared down upon

by Thomas the Tank Engine. and it hits them and

they zoom out to where the little tiny Thomas

the Tank Engine just kind of bloop off rails.

And there's kind of other scenes similar to that,

which definitely adds to the humor of the movie.

I don't think it necessarily provided a whole

bunch to the action, but it was definitely good

enough. Yeah, I thought the shrinking and growing

sequences were amazing. I thought that's probably

one of the biggest parts that made the movie

so enjoyable for me. Get it? Biggest? Obviously,

like Greg said, they added to the comedy in a

lot of specific situations. They definitely enhanced

certain running jokes and even made their own

jokes in certain spots. But I thought those visuals

were handled very well. And the first time we

see him shrink in the bathtub, We get a good

introduction to what's happening, so we kind

of get a grip on the scale of what just happened.

Like, okay, the guy shrunk down, and they do

a great job of showing how big the bathtub is,

and the water coming down, and it's so dramatic

and everything, and he gets washed up over the

side. But it does that just long enough for you

to get a handle on it, and then it sort of kicks

it into high gear when he falls down through

the floor. and he kind of goes on this little

adventure where he's like landing on all these

different things and you know he runs into the

rat and he's got to escape the rat and then he

falls down into the dance club and he's on the

record spinning around dodging everyone's feet

and stuff and like it was cool how they they

didn't dumb it down like they just gave you a

second to realize the scale and then it was like

boom off like a roller coaster is kind of taking

on this cool ride and um I just I loved honestly

seeing everything from that small point of view

like basically the perspective of an ant just

everyday normal objects like going through a

water pipe or you know falling down a drain or

something like that like I thought those visuals

were really really cool and also like Greg mentioned

the word endearing before I thought the scenes

with the ants were very endearing somehow like

and it like it's amazing that that could happen

because you're thinking like Okay, ants are insects,

they're kind of gross, nobody really likes them.

But you end up kind of liking ants after coming

out of this movie. It was just kind of weird.

Yeah, yeah, definitely. And I was surprised how

much of the ants actually played a part in the

movie. Like, that was a huge component of it.

I didn't think it would... I thought it maybe

would be a running joke or something like that,

but they actually, I think, utilized that power

in a way that made sense and was productive for

the story. And I loved how they had different

ants that had different powers, per se, or different

jobs and whatnot. So I found it a little interesting

that it wasn't the helmet that... gave him the

ability to like control them but it was like

that little earpiece thing that let him you know

speak with the end like the the fight sequences

it was just fun to watch the shrinking and enlarging

and just that mechanic and how they I thought

it was directed really well and it was easy to

keep balance of where he was the entire time

and it really felt like his power Was was actually

really effective, and I don't want to give it

away But a certain sequence that makes you realize

okay like he can go he's a he's a legit Avenger

you know which was I don't like I did not expect

that one sequence to happen where we get a little

bit of a special guest and I thought that was

a good a little bit of input and seeing that

yeah, man can kind of be badass so But what did

you think of Paul Rudd as Ant Man? I know that

was a little bit of a controversial Casting maybe

not controversial, but people wondered how well

he would fare. Did you guys like him? Do you

think he fit the role of Scott Lang? Well, I

think the fact that he was Scott Lang and not

Hank Pym kind of was good for me because I could

definitely see Michael Douglas more as a Hank

Pym. He definitely seems more of a Hank Pym character

and Scott Lang was always a little was more goofy

version of Ant -Man than than Hank Pym, so I

thought that kind of worked out well, if you

ask me. Yeah, I thought he ended up being perfect.

Maybe they didn't have a huge problem when they

announced that they had casted him. I mean, looking

back now, he obviously fits into the tone they

were going for, especially with this comedy background.

I was actually surprised he wasn't. funnier like

not like might sound like I'm like at this but

he was a lot more straight with the role and

I anticipated like he had some Comedy here and

there but it didn't really have like the like

smart ass This that I'm expected with a cup with

a Paul Rudd character Which you know, it makes

sense because it doesn't necessarily fit the

character So I think he he had enough to make

it funny But it wasn't like he was being Tony

Stark near or something like that Which I thought

some people feared it would be just like him

trying to be a lesser Iron Man Yeah Yeah, I think

definitely like Like you said he had some funny

moments, but I think a lot of scenes were stolen

by Michael Pena. Yeah. Oh man Yeah, he was he

was fantastic You know how I don't like reds,

but they had this rosé that really saved the

day for me Yeah, it he his sequences especially

like the you know the running gag of telling

the story I thought was pretty funny like every

time he was on screen. I thought it was it was

a good time And that's the second movie I really

enjoyed him in because I liked him in shooter

a lot, too This is the first movie I've seen

in him Really? He's he's great and like everything

he does he he can be serious He's been in a lot

of different roles and he can be crazy. He gave

me a serious actor He's one of the I think one

of the more underrated actors in Hollywood while

we're still talking about the comedy Would you

guys agree that this this almost has more humor

in it than Guardians? oof, that's a Or is it

about the same? Huh, I think Peter Quill ups

the Mount of humor in it really I think he was

a more humorous character than Scott Lang if

you ask me Yeah, I would say I would say it's

not as heavy as with as guardians because I think

with guardians like almost every character had

a comedic His drafts was kind of funny with yeah

obliviousness It's a different type of comedy.

It's I think it's more like family -friendly

type of comedy and we're guardians is a little

bit more edgy I mean, there's some of the jokes

that Chris Pratt says I don't think kids should

hopefully understand especially the the the Paul

painting joke that he makes But I guess if I'm

thinking like one -liners and stuff like that,

I would give Guardians. But I do think there's

maybe some more physical and like humor here,

especially with like the growing of things. And

it's very close. I think it's a, I don't know

which one has more, but I feel like both are

appropriate for the material that they're making.

Yeah. I'm going to, I guess I'll disagree a little

bit because when I walked out of this, I felt

like this had more. humor just sprinkled in than

Guardians did. I think you're right, Peter Quill

was the funnier character as opposed to Scott

Lang. But when you put everything in, like you

said, the physical comedy, Michael Pena, even

Hope a little bit with the punching thing and

the training sequence, and I think when you added

everything together, I felt like I laughed more

in this than I did in Guardians. Interesting,

yeah. But both of them, yeah. What did you and

we talked about Michael Douglas a little bit

as Hank Pym? I don't know about you, but I really

love What they did there where they kind of created

this lore with Ant -Man where yeah? He has a

little you know He's a character from this it

makes sense because you know Ant -Man is one

of the first Avengers And there's a history with

them that unit that's there that they touch upon

But I think it opens the door for a lot more

that you know It's kind of weird thinking Hank

Pym as Michael Douglas, but I don't know what

you guys thought about that choice But I thought

it ended up really making sense and working really

well Yeah, I agree it gave it a different deeper

history and it made it feel like it was it was

more into the Marvel universe than then it Should

be being the first of its of its kind I guess

you would say but I thought he did a really great

job and I loved I the CGI was really good with

his his younger version of Michael Douglas. That

was really well done. That was like, uh, they

did the same thing in one of Chuck's newly favorite

movies of Tron. I thought they did a much better

job in this movie with the youngering up of Michael

Douglas than they did with, um, what's his name,

but Jeff Bridges. Yes. But I kind of liked him

as like, a mentor kind of just kind of had a

nice father -son relationship there. They're

both people that have relationships with their

daughters that aren't going so well, but they

kind of have this relationship of father -son

of both kind of knowing what each other's going

through and can kind of give each other advice.

Yeah, and I believe Katherine Jones had actually

specifically asked if they could send home that

younger version of Michael Douglas and if she

can marry that instead of the older one. Yeah,

I like Michael Douglas a lot, as Hank Pym. I

was kind of unsure going into it how he would

be, but he ended up doing really well, I thought.

a character that's really passing the torch and

really trying to pass his knowledge and life

experience down to someone like, like really

like a father figure. I thought he portrayed

that really well and like, you know, for a time

really got along better with Scott than he was

with Hope. One of my favorite things about the

film is the symmetry between like Hank Pym trying

to redeem himself in his daughter's eyes and

Scott Lang doing the same thing with his daughter.

he gives us a great moment in the car where he

kind of helps hope to understand why her father's

doing certain things and you know this kind of

helps her you know sort of break down that barium

and she begins to forgive him sort of after that

conversation so that was kind of a big moment

and I really liked that that symmetry I thought

it was a great Way to approach the movie. Yeah,

and I think both of those relationships work

I think overall like all the relationships either,

you know scott lang and hank pam and hope and

scott lang and his daughter all, you know If

anything, I think maybe they could have even

spent a little bit more time with hank with scott

lang and his daughter what they was there was

really strong so they could even maybe give it

a little bit more but I think what's interesting

about Hank Pym too is that it gives a character

that's not existed in the Marvel Cinematic Universe

yet like there isn't that like besides maybe

Nick Fury but someone who's been through it and

has that seasoned superhero who they can go to

for advice I think he's a new type of character

for the Marvel Cinematic Universe and two the

thing is with Hank Pym he's not the most Likeable

character even in the comics, you know with this

history and everything So I think it's a smart

move to use Scott Lang because he doesn't immediately

have a story that you can get behind That's more

relatable than Hank Pym who's just kind of your

mad scientist type of character which we kind

of already have and Tony Stark so I think it

was a good idea to switch it up a little bit

and Go go this route. So Definitely glad they

didn't go with the wife beater version of yeah

I thought that's what they were mentioning when

they first the scene where it was a young Michael

Douglas and them talking about Stuff with his

wife and yeah and getting angry about it. I'm

like, okay This is a guy that gets quick to anger.

He had something happen with his wife I think

they're referring to him beating his wife and

Apparently not so yeah, I I thought that too.

I didn't think Disney would let Marvel go there

and of course that ends up not being the case

though. And by the way, we mentioned her a couple

of times just in passing, but the little girl

who played Scott Lang's daughter did an excellent

job I thought. I thought she was really good,

especially with that freaking scary ass bunny.

I thought that was great. She was good. I think

overall the performances were pretty strong.

We've talked about it with our Marvel films a

lot of people have that One thing we're seeing

now is that they're putting a Marvel movie inside

of another movie, you know Captain America was

a spy film within a comic book movie and this

is currently has like a heist in the center of

it I don't think it's a total heist movie but

it has elements you would see in most heist movies

and I think maybe my one complaint is that I

do wish that it maybe even went down that route

a little bit more and we got I thought the heist

was okay, but I thought there would be Maybe

a little bit more to it than there was it just

seemed like it was building to something like

in some epic overall heist and they think of

something like a Italian job or other movies

like that and this one just seemed to you know

It there were some things here and there but

overall I didn't live up to the potential Considering

the the mechanic of him growing small. I don't

know what you guys thought about that I thought

it was very much a heist type of movie when I

I mean I know this is sort of a I mean maybe

I guess it's kind of a good comparison because

it's also a comedy but actually has it in the

name Tower Heist with uh actually I think Michael

Peña was in that too Ben Stiller and Murphy and

Ben Stiller Alan Alda was the old guy that was

this really rich guy and everything but I don't

know, I compared it a lot to that because of,

I guess because of the comedy was the most obvious

thing you could draw, but I thought it had a

lot of similar qualities. Like the characters

were, like a lot of the different characters

were funny and everything and they ended up meshing

well by the end of it. So I mean, I liked, I

liked that aspect of it. I mean, it did feel

very different from, you know, something like

Italian job or, you know, Ocean's Eleven or something

like that, but. Yeah, I think it was enough of

it in it to to satisfy my liking cool. Was there

anything else we wanted to talk about regarding

Ant -Man? I just wanted to say that the The unexpected

cameos in this movie were awesome I won't ruin

anything for anybody because it's what it what

made it special for me But I will say like right

from the opening scene pretty much There was

one that got me pretty excited. I thought that

was pretty cool. Yeah, to me I'm like, I thought

they just forgot that guy played that role and

they were just moving on with it. I'm like, oh

wow, now they're keeping to that. That was pretty

cool. And then somebody else that's one of my

favorite smaller MCU characters. I enjoyed seeing

them in there. And then right through to the

end, there's actually two post -credit scenes.

There's a mid -credit scene and a post -credit

scene. There's the five people out there that

haven't seen it yet Yeah, I think though this

one has more than five people compared to if

you're looking at box office, but uh true Yeah,

but um yeah really great Easter eggs, too I caught

some of them and I was looking them up online

there were some that I didn't catch that were

pretty amazing and I actually plan on looking

for them because I'm actually gonna go see it

again this week nice nice and I'm planning on

looking for some of those other easter eggs because

they seem pretty interesting. Greg, was there

anything else you wanted to bring up? Oh, crap.

What was the thing that I didn't care for? There

was one thing I didn't care for. Oh, the scene

with the quantum verse. Oh, yeah, the scene with

the quantum verse was... You kind of knew it

was common from another scene in the movie, so

I don't feel like I'm really ruining anything,

but... You definitely tell that's coming and

it It just was very trippy and it didn't bother

me too too much, but it just went a little bit

Too far with the visuals. I guess it was just

like a bad acid trip I I've never been on acid

But I feel like that would be what an acid trip

feels like and I but have you ever been to the

quantum universe? I don't but yeah We have nothing

to go on. We have no idea what it looks like

smaller than protons and quarks. Yeah, but it

felt like a 70s exploitation kind of film kind

of scene. That's the quantum universe. It's a

portal back to the 70s. That makes more sense,

then. A lot more hair, a lot more sideburns.

More than a leather jacket. I would totally fit

in in the 70s, you guys. See I liked it I thought

you know how you how you represent that it's

kind of tough and honestly got a lot of flashbacks

to Interstellar last year it had a similar vibe

to it But I think maybe why it was so you know

psychedelic the way you mentioned it is Perhaps

that's going to play a part in the Doctor Strange

movie So maybe it's just you know the that type

of you know the Phantom Universe or whatever

want to call it that You have the micro universe.

I don't know if Marvel owns that. I don't know

if that's something they would ever go down,

but maybe that was the Micronauts. Yeah, I don't

know if they have the rights. I don't think they'd

ever make a Micronauts movie, but who knows?

They're making an humans movie, so anything's

possible. I would be really thrown off by Micronauts.

Yeah. I was reading the last couple days, like,

you know, some stuff that Kevin Feige was saying

that, you know, this is like a the way they portrayed

this subatomic universe was really a gateway

into like Doctor Strange and how they're gonna

explore some alternate dimensions and stuff so

sort of expect to see more of the same and like

you know those crazy trips through dimensions

and stuff because they said actually the Doctor

Strange movie is gonna be based on that quite

a bit like you know kind of reality hopping and

different things like that so that should be

kind of exciting. Very cool. Very cool. Yeah,

and I would say, like I said, I like this movie

a lot. It does suffer from some of the same things,

like you said, with Marvel. The villain's not

all that fantastic, and the middle is draggy

a little bit as you get into kind of the origin

aspect of it. Not necessarily in a bad way, but

overall, I think it surpassed what I expected

it to being. And like I said, at the end of the

day, I just really enjoyed it, and it just was

just fun. Simple as that. It was just a fun time,

so. Yeah, that's what a movie supposed to be

is fun, and it was fun. Yes, so the question

then becomes now Phase two is over and within

phase two we had Iron Man 3, Thor 2, Avengers

Age of Ultron, Guardians of the Galaxy, Winter

Soldier, and Ant -Man. If we were going to compare

that to phase one that came before with, you

know, the first Iron Man, Iron Man 2, the first

Thor, the first Cap, Avengers... I might be forgetting

one of one of your so you think face to overall

has been an improvement in phase one as it as

it progressed you know or did you think it pays

one of the overall better grouping of films.

I think that it's not a huge leap from one to

the other. But I think they're definitely going

in a direction where they're they keep increasing

and getting a little bit better than what has

come before it and that's not every movie is

leaps and bounds ahead of everything in phase

one but it definitely overall the average from

phase one and the average from phase two I definitely

think you got phase two just edging out phase

one. Chuck you in the same group same boat are

you more of a phase one fan. Yeah, I think phase

two ended up being a little bit better. I think

it's tough because like the first Iron Man was

so good. Obviously the first Avengers everyone

loved when they first came together. I've enjoyed

the first Thor movie a lot. But looking at like

the phase two ones, I think they got so much

better at like character interaction within the

movies. Like I mean you look at like Guardians

and then the second Avengers and part of that

is just because of the story is progressing You

know like the Avengers characters are more familiar

with each other Relationships are becoming closer

things like that. I think they're doing a great

job With the character interaction even like

Ant -Man the supporting characters. I thought

were stronger Than for example some of the supporting

characters in phase one. Yeah. Yeah, so I think

they're really getting better like balancing

out their movies and making them well rounded.

So yeah, I definitely enjoyed phase two a little

bit better. I think phase two, like we mentioned,

I think what they've had a successful trend of

doing was taking a Marvel film and putting it

in something else or having it influenced by

another genre to keep it from being stale. And

I don't you don't get that as much with the first

ones just because you're just trying to like

Thor is just kind of Thor Iron Man is just Iron

Man like I love Iron Man don't get me wrong But

I think they realize how do you keep these movies

and just don't give you the same thing over and

over again? No, even Iron Man 3 which I know

is maybe most people don't like but I do like

how it almost fits into like the 80s buddy comp

genre with a lot of what it's doing so I think

it's very close, but I do feel like They are

continually evolving most of their stories I

like you look at winter soldier and the second

of so much for most of the movies I think have

been an improvement and I think there's overall

there's diversity of movies is stronger face

to wise than face one when you add in things

like ant -man and and Guardians of the Galaxy.

I think that is the wild card in the advantage

that Phase 2 has. But overall, I think, you know,

Marvel has been extremely successful with both.

I know there's people out there who don't like

the Marvel films, which is fine, but they have

a formula that works and that formula has, you

know, errors with it or issues with it. But overall,

I end up every Marvel movie I've seen, I think

I've walked out and felt like I've at least enjoyed

what I saw. Did you get your money's worth? Did

I did so because I'm a sickler and I'm a dork

I do like ranking things So I would I did try

to I don't know if you guys want to do this But

I did try to rank phase two from you know, my

favorite to my least favorite I don't did you

guys have any interest in doing that for all

of them from this one into just phase two You

have Iron Man 3 then we have Thor 2 Then we have

Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers

Age of Ultron, and then Ant -Man. Chuck, you

said you did rank yours. What would your ranking

be? My rankings would be, number one is still

Winter Soldier for me. Really, really liked that

movie a lot. Yeah. And that further validates

my point about the supporting characters and

that. And I like the villain a lot in that too,

I thought. Even though he really didn't have

any lines, I thought he was very funny. Speaking

of Terminator, he's very much a Terminator -like

character. Yeah. So Winter Soldier is still number

one for me. Number two, very close second, is

Guardians of the Galaxy. I still love that movie

on a re -watch. I get sort of the same thrill

as when I first saw it in the theater. That's

a great re -watch movie because there's just

so many cool things in it. Third? I would actually

put Ant -Man third. Nice. I enjoyed it a great

deal. It was a really, really fun ride. Fourth,

I would put Age of Ultron. Like I said, I definitely

enjoyed seeing how the Avengers' relationships

have developed and how they're progressing as

a team and everything in every new adventure.

But there were a lot of issues I had with that

movie and some things that didn't make sense

and this and that. But I mean, overall, I definitely

liked it. So that's four. Five, Thor Dark World.

which I'm surprised it ends up as five because

I really did like Thor dark room a lot and And

then last would be Iron Man 3 Greg. Did you come

up the list? Yes, I came up with one quickly

right on the spot number one Guardians the galaxy

a little bit different than Chuck I really enjoyed

the humor in that movie and I keep rewatching

that one and Definitely, I think the music is

what tops that out over everything else. I think

it's the most complete in every area Then cap

is definitely a superb movie. I Wish I could

find my frickin blu -ray of that and pissed because

I want to watch it again I cannot find it very

pissed about that Third is it man. It definitely

takes a spot. Oh, yeah and Fourth I'm going to

go with the war to like Chuck. I also still really

enjoy it And also five iron man. I still enjoy

that movie as well. It's it's they're all really

great movies and It's just by small degrees that

they kind of outrank each other So age of Ultron

would be six. No age of Ultron. I'm sorry. I

forgot about age of Ultron. It's Is above Thor

2 okay, so Thor 2 would be last on your list

to yes So we were pretty close except we are

one and two Yeah, so my number one is similar

is the same as chalk in winter soldier I just

I don't know. I think that's to me second to

is maybe one of the best Marvel movies period

I love that movie and takes a great Marvel storyline

and does it well my number two is I know probably

the anomaly that People are gonna think I'm crazy,

but I really like this movie and even though

most people don't and that's Iron Man 3 I know

people hate some man interests. I actually kind

of like it and like I mentioned I I like the

the dynamic of it becoming like a buddy cop film

and seeing how Tony Stark operates outside of

the suit also the Air Force one rescue I think

is one of the best action sequences in all for

Marvel My number three would be Guardians of

the Galaxy number four Ant -Man Then I would

go my forgetting one then Thor dark world and

then actually would put age of Ultron last on

my list Thor and age of Ultron are very very

similar I think if I watch age of Ultron again,

it might actually go above Thor but Overall though,

like I said, I like them all but for me Winter

Soldier is a clear head of everything else two

and three are very close to one another Then

Ant -Man is right solidly in the middle and Thor

and Age of Ultron anchor it out. So that's kind

of the separation I have Now though we're entering

into phase three and is there anything in particular?

You're super excited for anything you hope to

see with Marvel as we move into the final one

not the final phase with the next phase Want

to see the last two I want to see where they

come from and I want to see how Thanos starts

collecting Thanos actually poops them out. He

has a very high fiber diet and Any any theories

on when the next where the next ones come from?

What movies will see them appear in I guess I

think the two movies will see them appear in

will be Guardians of Galaxy 2 and Doctor Strange.

Yeah, that would be my guess as well. I think

they'd have to appear those So I would assume

Thanos is gonna have a pretty big role in Doctor

Strange, I would think. At least in Guardians,

but... I think... I'm thinking that Adam Warlock

is gonna come into play. That would be amazing.

That would be awesome. Because they have confirmed

that that was his cocoon that we saw. Nice. That

was broken out of. So he definitely does exist

in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It's just a

matter of if they're gonna... choose to utilize

him or not, but I think they will because he

was such a big part of the Infinity Gauntlet

comic story. And I've heard that George Lucas

is gonna direct Howard the Duck for phase four.

No, I'm just kidding. Phase 17. Oh yeah, that

would be amazing. Any specific film that you're

particularly looking forward to compared to the

others? I am looking forward to another Guardians

movie, just to see where the characters are and

what new music we have to listen to and everybody

to be infatuated about this old music that becomes

popular again. Yeah. I think the one I'm most

excited for, because we talked about it a long

time ago, but I can't wait to actually see it

on screen as Black Panther. I really love that

character, so I hope they do it justice. And

Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange should

be a lot of fun too. I love Benedict as a Sherlock

Holmes. I hope that those like Doctor Strange,

Black Panther, they follow the same lines of

Ant -Man where they can kind of be their own

thing and exist in that world, but don't have

to feel like they have to tie in unnecessarily.

So I'm looking forward to those movies. So I

think Phase 3 is going to have even more diversity

when it comes to different types of characters

and stuff like that. Are you are you guys excited

for? Civil war and seeing which characters side

with who yeah Yeah, and I'm that and seeing how

spider -man is gonna be incorporated to all this

yeah, I was actually counting reading an article

yesterday about What characters will be appearing

in Captain Racker Civil War and there's like

16? There's like 11 11 villain I mean, I'm sorry

11 heroes and Like five sort of villains interesting

sort of villains sort of I think the one I I

have a feeling the ones gonna kind of flip -flop

You know, they mentioned that, you know crossbones

is gonna be a big part of it winter soldiers

gonna be in it Baron Strucker or and brands emo.

I'm sorry pink mask Hopefully, I don't know That

and I hope we get the iron spider suit So yeah,

so it looks like everything's coming all things

Marvel I guess the question becomes when Marvel

ends phase three and DC ends enters phase one

who ends up actually coming out on top, but That'll

be a question. I think we can start answering

next year But one way we end each episode is

with a letter, and we have another question that

I'm going to get to this weekend. It's from Eric

Glenn, and it is a few things here, and we'll

get your guys' responses to this. So he writes

to us and says, good day to you, sirs. Hello!

So I was just listening to your old pound cast

and I'm loving it so far. It reminds me of me

and my friends when we talk about geek stuff.

pretty much what we do and I'm going to go back

and listen to some of your older episodes so

I apologize if you've answered this question

already. So what got you guys into podcasting

and how you all meet? And in order to have some

sort of key question in addition to the generic

question I just asked how about with Arkham Knight

now out what is your favorite superhero video

game? How did we all meet well, well we met on

podcasters meat duck. Yes I'm a Scorpio. So we

met up with other Libras. I guess I don't know.

I like long walks with a microphone Exactly.

So how do we all meet good question Chuck and

I actually go back Way back to second grade,

we started podcasting way back then. We went

to school together, graduated with one another,

so we've been friends since then. Greg came into

the picture. A little later, as we shared our

very first college class with one another. French,

which I do not remember anything about, except

Esque -je -peux a la toilette, and I had a crush

on the little red -haired girl, kind of like

Charlie Brown. Oh yeah, I do remember her. I

mean, what? I don't remember. Yeah, we had French

class, and the only end of the class we ended

up actually having in college together, but it

ended up working out, so. The only one that mattered.

Yeah, yeah, so we've been friends since then.

How we get into podcasting, I guess that's kind

of a longer story. I started as writing reviews

for Geek Cats Radio. I then kind of incorporated

getting into podcasts and then... I brought Chuck

and Greg along because I wanted it a I live in

Baltimore currently they live in Scranton So

we wanted to hang out virtually and figured why

not record it and that's pretty much the story

of where we got in the podcast I can't wait to

hang out in real life though at the Baltimore

Yeah Tell them about the the name how you can

move with the name. Oh, that's a good. That's

a good point Do you want you want to explain

that? Um, yeah, sure So yeah, our name talking

circles actually comes from the way we used to

hang out. Like Dan mentioned, Greg came along

when we were all in college, so we started hanging

out around that time, which was probably like,

what, about 10, 11 years ago now already? Geez,

yeah, about 2004. It's crazy. So, you know, we

would kind of all hang out every weekend and

whatever we would end up doing, whether we'd

go bowling or go to the movies or just go hang

out somewhere and then go get some late night

food. we always ended up talking pretty late

into the night so you know we'd have to leave

a place because other people were trying to get

a table or trying to get in there so we'd all

end up in the parking lot kind of in this big

circle just standing around talking for like

another hour usually yeah and um so we that was

our running joke that we were always standing

in a circle that's that's all we did we were

like talking all the time and just you know basically

like be essaying about all kinds of different

stuff and usually comics and geeky stuff, but

So when we decided to make the podcast we thought

that would be a good Name and a good background

for the show to call it talking in circles Yeah,

and you know it's a common saying, but it works

out really well, so that's the story of us Thanks

for listening. I don't know but uh As for the

video game question, I don't think any of us

really play too many video games at this point

I restarted playing Fallout 3. It's not really

a comic book related video game, but I love that

game. It's definitely sci -fi, fits into that

kind of goofy, B -rated horror that I kind of

like, and I like the first -person RPG. I have

played some of the Batman games. I played the

first one, actually, of that series you're talking

about. I got to this point where like I had to

get into like this church or something and there

was a gate and Frickin I did not know how to

get past so I kind of rage quit on that cuz like

how does Batman not know how to defeat a gate?

He's not a gatekeeper. Yeah I played Batman Arkham

Asylum. I not beat and I forget where I've gotten

decently and I've enjoyed I've enjoyed that but

I think my favorite one's probably been The X

-Men legend games are up there. I love those.

Those are fun, yeah. The Marvel, the Marvel -Alderman

Alliance have been a lot of fun. And some of

the older ones, like I even loved the old Batman

NES game back in the day. That was a lot of fun

in the old X -Men games for Sega Genesis were

a good time. What other video? In the Punisher

game, actually, for Xbox. It was kind of brutal,

but that was a lot of fun, so. I don't chuck

anyone's other come to your mind. Well, I was

a big fan, actually, of the Spider -Man 2 movie

game. Oh yeah, that's a good one too, yeah. Because

it kind of gave you free roam over the entire

city of New York, which was awesome. And you

could take missions whenever you like, but you

could kind of just web -sling around the city,

which was kind of awesome. But definitely my,

I would have to say though, my all -time favorite

is the first Marvel Ultimate Alliance. Just the

fact that you could pick your own team. every

stage not just on certain stages like you could

pick your team wherever you want and then you

you play with those four characters so you can

switch any between any of the characters at any

time and each of those characters had like four

or five you know unique powers to theirs You

know power set and I just had a blast playing

that game. I've played it over and over Numerous

times and it's always fun. It's always fun to

go back to evil like after it I haven't played

it in a year or something I'll go back and play

it a little bit and it's a good time and I have

played the second ultimate alliance I didn't

think it was quite as good. So I'm still a huge

fan of the ridge Yeah, the second was kind of

disappointment because I was supposed to get

on like the Civil War The thing what didn't end

up really working out. I think it ended up I

don't know it became kind of weird But I have

not actually played any of the Batman Arkham

games. I've watched playthroughs on YouTube,

but I have not played them myself Yeah, when

you come down, maybe we can play play a little

bit. But yeah Another good question. It's like

the worst Superhero game and there's a lot of

those so maybe another week we can talk about

the bad ones because there's a few not really

superhero But I think we all really enjoy Battlefront

Star Wars Battlefront Yeah, that's it. Alrighty.

And I am at movie revolt, but that'll be it for

us for this week. We'll be back next week same

time same channel same podcast feed but for now

This has been Chuck. This has been Greg or Connor

who cannot speak for himself quite yet, but has

been expressing very deep opinions about things

He definitely has he definitely has he likes

he does not hesitate to tell you he's been upset

for sure but uh yeah and this has been Dan and

we've been Talking in circles. We'll see you

next week. Yeah, Connor's not afraid to tell

you things. He does not like yeah Yeah, he was

not a fan of the fact that we gave spoilers to

age voltrons considering that it came out before

he was alive So yeah, it was a little unfair

to him. But you know, hey You got it. You got

to step it up that people people gave me spoilers

on Ghostbusters But still one of my favorite

movies. Yeah, it's okay Technically he was there.

He just wasn't born yet. He was you know, you

know, he heard it. He heard it in podcast form

It's like the day he was born like he comes out

of the womb and the doctors are talking about

the intervalltron. He's like really? He's just

born like a minute ago I know I saw the trailer.

It's like wait. How did you see the trailer?
