About this Episode

The hosts revisit their list of geek properties they hadn't watched or read to see which ones they've caught up on and whether the hyped classics lived up to expectations. Greg finally watches Alien and Aliens, Chuck tackles the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic in color, and they discuss their thoughts on these iconic properties. The episode also includes a tribute to Christopher Lee, who passed away during the recording.

Hey, Tara Strong here, and you're listening to

the Geekcast Radio Network. You are now on the

inside of what I like to call the circle of trust.

We are all connected in a great circle of life.

You know something, Bert? I think you and I are

going in circles. It feels like we're going in

circles. The circuit is not complete. When I

left you, I was but the third. Now I am the last.

Because it's a circle. Yeah, we heard about the

circle. Yeah, it's what millions would change.

Hi, this is Greg. This is Chuck. And this is

Dan, and we are Talking in Circles brought to

you by the Geekcast Radio Network. the podcast

is trying to become just a tad bit less shameful.

I say that because today we will be revisiting

our list of shame that we did a few months ago

and seeing if we were able to scratch off some

of those geek properties that we haven't caught

up with and kind of go over those and, you know,

see if we thought those iconic properties lived

up to the hype. But before we get to our list

of shame revisit, how's the week been going for

you guys? Not too eventful, but for some reason

I continue to have Negative experiences while

driving more cycles again. No, this time wasn't

motorcycles. It was this guy in a pickup truck

with hauling landscaping equipment nice, but

uh, we were getting off getting off of the interstate

and We've all seen the situation where there's

a yield sign and you kind of have to merge into

Traffic that's already moving in your direction.

But obviously, you know you want to kind of get

a look ahead while you're coming up to it so

if there's no one coming you just kind of keep

on rolling through you know yeah so this guy

in front of me apparently had no clue what a

yield sign was apparently thought it was a stop

sign oh that is that is always amazing and there

was literally no one coming like there was no

one even in sight and this guy stopped dead like

right in front of me and i'm like Like I double

checked. I'm like, what the hell is he stopping

for? So I beeped the horn at him, right? And

he like immediately his arm flies out the window

and he's like flipping me off. I'm like, what

the? How do how do I be the one that's right?

And then you're dead wrong and you're trying

to flip me off. Like, I can't stand that when

people do that. Like, I'm starting to think that.

It's not even worth beeping at people anymore

because like no one takes it how I intended which

is like they misinterpret your beep Yeah, like

in my head someone beeped at me. I would be like,

oh why they beeping at me Did I do something

wrong and I kind of like take a second and think

what the hell did I do? But everyone else pretty

much just immediately goes on the defensive and

starts flipping you off Yeah, I'd say I probably

more lean toward the ladder there If I get beeped

at, I'm like, what did I do? I didn't do anything

wrong. You're better off, I guess, just not even

beeping and avoiding all road rage at all costs,

I guess. Or like you misinterpret the beep, like

you peep at one person and someone else thinks

you're beeping at them. Yeah, no, it's like someone

you know and you beep and wave. The guy in front

of you is like flipping you off, like, no, I

didn't. It was not my intention. Greg, how's

things going with you? Ah, fine. I went to the

dentist this morning. That's always exciting.

Been told that I brush my teeth too hard. Didn't

know that was possible. But apparently I do,

and that's destroying my gum line. Yay! Didn't

know that was possible, guys. I didn't know that

you could brush your teeth too hard. I'm just

trying to get them clean here, people. I think

if you brush them too hard, you would notice,

like, paint. I know. Yep, they haven't noticed

any pain, just him going, yeah, your gum line's

receding. You should stop brushing your teeth

hard. I'm like, thanks, Doc. That's insane. I

didn't know you could do that. Yep, you can't.

All these things you got to worry about, you

know? It's like brushing it too hard, you know?

That's just insane. Yeah, I need to brush them

so I don't get cavities, but you can't brush

them too hard You need like a like, you know

in a video game give like the power bar or something

like that So, you know, you're in the right vicinity

like have your range Yeah, your your toothbrush

have like a power strip strip in it So it can

kind of like now you're you know, I got to stay

within the appropriate level When the light lights

up green you stay at that like intensity. Yeah

i'm just saying like this is a million dollar

idea That's all i'm saying why death in seven

come up with it. I don't know But uh, my week's

been pretty pretty on oral b Yeah, my week's

been pretty uneventful for the most part. Uh,

well kind of eventful Uh, not for me, but for

my wife because earlier this week actually when

this was airs She'll be on the news. I look well

the local news if that counts because she won

or was awarded I guess how you would say the

Teacher of the year award for yeah for news watch

12 or whatever in our area So the news came did

like a little story She got this nice little

plaque and all this other stuff It's interesting

because she's been on maternity leave for the

last like month or so if she actually had to

go into work for one day and Like they're like

filmer and then and so I get to spend the day

with with the little guy But it was cool. I'm

looking forward to seeing it on on TV tomorrow,

but she like she's worried She's like I really

screwed up the interview, but I'm like If podcasting

tells me anything, editing can make anything

sound good. And it can even make good things

sound bad. That's awesome. Congratulations, sir.

Yeah. So we got that going for us, which is nice.

Also, I haven't been able to go to the movie

theater a lot lately or just haven't had the

opportunity but I finally did this. What possible

excuse could you have for that? It's just been

too hot, you know, the weather. It's too warm

outside. But recently I did get the opportunity

and I was gonna go see Mad Max and like I didn't

know if it was because I was rusty but it became

the like a treacherous experience so I go - I'm

going on a Sunday morning, like the first showing.

I check on Saturday, get the - get the showing

to the next day. I'm like perfect 1030. My wife

has something to do at the time, so it actually

works really well. I get to the theater - I'm

like in line to get my ticket and notice like

the showing for it isn't showing up. I'm like

that's sold out I can't sold out. I mean, I literally

just opened so I'm like, oh good the kiosk It's

not there either and there's like it was a guy

there I'm like, do you what what happened to

the tension 30 showing of Mad Max? I'm like,

oh, it's canceled today because there's a church

there like that like does the service So they

took over the theater for that time frame for

when it would be showing normally so because

of the church Mad Maxism isn't playing I'm like

Crap. That sucks. The next showing's not until

like 4 30 or 1 30 or something like that, so

I can't just wait there. I'm like, okay, what

the hell am I gonna do? So I get on my phone

trying to find a theater near me and I got one

which is like, I have a list of theaters that

I don't go to and this one's on it. It's like

one of the worst theaters. It's not awful, but

it's not up to my personal standard, but. I'm

like, all right, well, it has a showing, but

it's like at 11, 11 .50, which is like an hour.

And it's a 30 minute drive, so it should be okay,

or 11 .50. So I'm like, I had some time to kill.

So I'm like, you know what I'll do? I'll go to

Chick -fil -A and get lunch and then go see my

movie. But I'll go to Chick -fil -A parking lot.

There's no one there. I'm like, why is it so

empty? I'm like, oh, it's Chick -fil -A that

closed on Sunday. I'm like, why? I can't do anything.

And then I get lunch and play styles. And I'm

looking through my phone again. And I realize

there was a closer theater that I. didn't check

that's one of the best theaters that had a better

showing time but it was too late to go to that

one because it literally was just starting so

it was just this huge kerfuffle of me getting

to go to this theater so but I finally did go

see the movie which was it I didn't it felt like

I'd never went to a theater before I'm usually

much more prepared but and then I had to see

in 3d too which was kind of annoying and but

I ended up actually being quite good because

3d was was actually added something to it and

usually I don't like 3d But I don't know if you

guys, I'm guessing, have not seen Mad Max at

all? Me, no. Okay. I did. I've been waiting to

see it forever. I know a lot of people have talked

about it, so I'm not really gonna mention a huge

deal of it. I would just say that I absolutely

loved it. If you've seen Road Warrior in those

films, in the Mad Max series, which I really

think the only good one is Road War - World Warrior,

Mad Max. The first film is interesting in its

place in history, but it's not very good, and

Thunderdome is, yeah, it has its moments, but...

Welcome to the Thunderdome, bitch! Yeah, just

like that. That's a good moment, but... A lot

of people have been saying that there's like

no plot to it, and I don't necessarily agree

there's no plot to it. I just think there's no

exposition to anything. It kind of just drops

you into this world. And the plot's really straightforward

and basic, but it's like the base - it's the

best elixir for a lot of the issues with summer

movies right now. Things like Transformers, even

the Avengers, that are too bloated with plot

and too - like, have too much going on. This

one's really straightforward. It's like there's

this - Mission that they have to get to and that's

basically it and it's like get a two -hour extended

chase, but we've done really well And the characters

are all I think are even strong because even

though they don't say a lot I think there they

do have development and they are interesting

Charlize Theron is a main character She plays

Furiosa who ends up being like probably the main

character of this movie in a lot of ways Tom

Hardy's in it being Tom Hardy but if you know

anything like George Miller the guy loves his

like Oddities his craziness and it's it very

much fits into that mold it's a lot of characters

just with deformities and feels like a world

that has been mutated because of radiation and

The actions of pieces in it to me are like some

of the best I've seen in a long while this gave

me the feeling I so much wanted from Avengers

it had that I just I was wowed I like I The last

like 30 minutes that piece or chase sequence

near that finishes it I thought I couldn't believe

the things they were doing and use the use of

practical stunts and some of the just The mind

that man must have to come up with some of the

stuff along with everyone involved. So I I don't

know how much you guys would dig it because it

is quite it's quite odd in a lot of ways the

characters are very out there and stuff like

that, but uh, I loved it. It's I would recommend

it most people have seen it already. So i'm just

kind of just Repeating a lot of what's been said,

but if you've been you know debating it I think

it's worth seeing and especially because it hopefully

will open the door out for more movies like it

so But yeah, I don't know and you guys have been

up to anything else like movie wise or anything

like that I think Chuck you've actually met you

saw like a classic film of that mistaken Yes,

I did actually I got to see something that we

were chatting a little bit about on Twitter this

week I forget why I came up, but we were talking

about one of the very first sci -fi movies ever

made and It wasn't even my intention to go and

watch it after we talked about it I just happened

to be browsing through Netflix and kind of looking

at my my list and everything and it gives you

like other suggestions and stuff and for some

reason at that on that exact same night It popped

up on my suggestions Netflix and that was live

way hours don't love you Wow, we just got really

classy here for a second or trip to the moon

and Another reason why I watched it too was I

looked at it and said it was only like 16 minutes

long Like how bad could it be I'm like, it's

like 15 minutes of my life. So But yeah, I'm

really not sure what I watched there It was it's

quite interesting. Have you guys seen it? It's

been a very long time It's like I watched this

one too where they like It was sort of remastered

in a way that they added new music to it Yeah,

so like the music was really weird It gave it

like an even even weirder feeling than it already

was because it's obviously a silent movie and

no one's talking but it didn't even have any

like, you know, like some of the old silent movies

would like break to a blank screen and they would

have the words and the dialogue, but it didn't

even do that. It's just like, you know, straight

action. It's nonstop loads of fun. Okay. A lot

of CGI, the CGI just seemed a little out there.

Yeah. The effects, I mean, obviously they're

pretty terrible by today's standards, but I'm

looking at. You know, it's made in 1902, so I'm

like, all right, I could kind of let that slide

a little bit, I guess. You know, they got some

cardboard cutouts of their spaceship and basically

their goal is to get a bunch of people get into

this capsule with no astronaut suits or anything

like that, just whatever they got on. They all

get in and they want to be blasted to the moon

through this giant cannon thing that sort of

looks like a huge telescope. And like the backgrounds

are like made out of cardboard and you can see

they're like painted and stuff. But the way they

did it though, for what they had to work with,

I read it was like, it was the whole project

was completed in like three months or something

like that. So it's kind of impressive with everything

that they had to design and build and everything

on the set. You know and then they get to them

to the moon. I don't want to spoil too much,

but for this 113 year old movie Yeah No, there's

people like lining up to see it, but it should

really release it in theaters again I mean, I'm

sure they have some like theaters that do would

like release it every so often or something like

that So should I do specials? I just I just wanted

to mention how one thing that I thought was hilarious

at one point when they get to the moon And they're

kind of exploring around and there's like really

weird psychedelic stuff that they're doing. There's

like the stars are like people's faces and stuff.

And they're kind of like hanging there from the

ceiling or whatever. And you can see the wires

that they're hanging from. And then they come

across these weird plants and like rock formations

and stuff. And they meet aliens that live on

the moon, like they're moon men. And it was funny,

like, they capture them and they take them back

to their leader or whatever. But I noticed they

have these really weird outfits, you know, pretty

good costume design, but they're wearing the

same shoes as the other actors. So moon men have

the same shoes as Earth people. Nike has a huge

workforce, man. They can really promote their

stuff. Apparently Nike was sending stuff to the

moon before 1902 so exactly exactly but but yeah,

it's it's a good It's a fun time just to kind

of look back and see what things were like back

then and how they you know They made these films,

but I mean I think the reason they came up because

for those who don't know the other broadcasts

I do and freaky cast cinema geeks Which we kind

of just rebranded and and with large up because

of Greg who did who made the awesome logo, which

is fantastic. And it's very much an homage to

that movie. It has the iconic symbol of the of

the moon with the thing in its eye and stuff

like that. So that's taken from that movie. So

if you're on Netflix, and then it's also got

a little little Jurassic Park in there, because

I know that's one of your favorites, Dan. It

is it is. So it was it's a good it's a good combo

of new and old and geeky and like, you know,

high fluid. So I'm a big fan of it. So hopefully

you guys are as well. So Dinosaurs on the moon,

there's a good picture. Well, next time, after

Jurassic World, I assume next would be Jurassic

Space. Jurassic Moon? Yeah, where the T -Rex

race off against the space pope. We've genetically

modified and crossed the t -rex with alien Or

like they'll do in the matchup with like armageddon

where they get a team of dinosaurs to go on to

an asteroid to to dig up And then they'll you

know cross raptors with predators and create

this army Yeah, wow a predator army of raptors.

That would be that would be intimidating and

they fight the terminator exactly Actually, one

little news story I figured we should bring up.

We talk about a lot of Marvel stuff, and I think

this is pertinent because we had an episode where

we did a review of the Daredevil series and some

rather big news dropped. And that's the fact

that not only have they indicated Punisher will

be in season two, but they've also named the

actor, Jon Bernthal, will be playing the Punisher

in season two of Daredevil, which is kind of,

I don't know, to me, a little bit surprising

that we... Guess that might happen or wish that

might happen and now it is so curious to hear

You know what you guys have to say about that.

I mean Greg I'll give you a little little chance

to speak here What were your thoughts on bringing

Punisher into the Daredevil universe for next

season? Well, the Daredevil universe is a lot

more I guess the word I want to severe then I

thought it was gonna be it's a lot more brutal

and I think With that brutality, I think the

Punisher would be a great fit in that world because

Punisher is pretty freaking brutal. The actor

who is playing the Punisher, I believe he was

the friend on Walking Dead. Yes, he played Shane

in Walking Dead, yeah. Yeah, Shane, which I'm

watching season three, by the way. Oh wow. at

the beginning of season three, which is kind

of where I'm at in the graphic novel. So that's

kind of interesting side by side comparison so

far. But anyway, I think he's a very capable

actor, and I think he looks like he would really

fit into that role. He looks like a Frank Castle

type. I'm not sure if this is going to sound

racist or not, since we don't usually say anything

that's not racist at all. But he looks very,

very Italian, like Frank Castle kind of does

in the comic books. He's got that kind of Garth

Ennis look with the hair. If you slicked back

his hair and everything, he's got that kind of

bulbous nose and everything. He's just got a

Punisher kind of look to him that I really like,

to be quite honest, and I can't wait to see him

as Frank Castle. I'm just hoping they get the

costuming right for him. No white go -go boots,

though. I like that in the comic books, but I

don't think it would work in the movies. Maybe

if they had fur. Yeah for fringe. Yeah, that'd

be kind of cool. What are your thoughts? Well,

maybe they could maybe they're like moon boots

so he could join the trip to the moon story Start

shooting all the aliens waiting for the Marvel

edition of you know a trip to the moon where?

Stan Lee shows up and it's like rocket raccoon.

It's like this is completely different. This

is nothing like the original It would be silent,

too Now I was kind of really surprised at that

pick actually I'm not, I can't say I'm really

disappointed or anything. I'm kind of excited

to see how he does. I got to say, I got to give

the guy props because he totally made me hate

his character on Walking Dead. So I guess that

means he was good as an actor, but like I, I

just hated his guts on Walking Dead. He's such

a slime ball. I don't know. But, um, obviously

he's kind of good at playing a sort of evil.

Not totally evil, but sort of an evil manipulative

type of thing, but a jerk. Yeah total jerk Kind

of guy, but we'll see how he does this castle

like I don't know I'm interested in his take

on it cuz like I Know a lot of people kind of

harp on the Tom Jane version, but I actually

love Tom Jane as Punisher I love the Tom Jane

version too. Yeah, and so I just recently actually

watched again the the Ray Stevens version, the

Punisher Warzone. And that was better than I

remembered it actually. He played it pretty well

too. So, I mean, I'm always welcome to different

interpretations of that. So I'm kind of eager

to see what this guy can do. Yeah. It actually

kind of gained a new found respect for that version

of it. Warzone when I listened to that like one

of the earliest how did this get made episodes

with the director and she kind of Went into it

and it was interesting Oh, yeah to like she kind

of went into it thinking it would be like a dark

comedy and if you go into that mindset It makes

so much more sense. But I still there's some

some choices or I'm like I don't I don't know

about that. But yeah, Newman. Yeah, I mean, the

guy JBR felt like as an actor, like for Walking

Dead, I was indifferent towards him toward there

are some moments where I just, I don't know,

I feel like he comes from like the wannabe Robert

De Niro School of Acting where like, He has a

lot of the same similar mannerisms. You can kind

of see the really evoking a step of style, but

he just he'd lack subtlety and sometimes but

I think that's actually good for this type of

role because I think that's kind of fits fits

the character of the Punisher and I did like

him a lot in Fury and in Wolf of Wall Street.

So and I'm not that I hated him in the Walking

Dead. I just I don't know. I thought that there

are some choices that I just questioned that

but that also could have been more of a direction

than than on him. I'm glad they're bringing in

the Punisher. I want to know how it's going to

be done. I worry that. Is it just, are they throwing

him in there for a reason? Is it just because?

I hope they don't have to do the origin of the

Punisher again, because that doesn't seem like

that's something you need to do. You can literally

explain that. I think they'll skip that. Yeah.

You can literally explain... It would be awesome

if they do what they did in the comics. They

had a lot of Punisher versus Daredevil type stuff

that played really awesome in the comic books.

Especially if they had Spider -Man involved.

That was a three -way battle that I always thought

was... that was always pretty cool. Yeah. Yeah.

I mean, and I think you can explain the Punisher

in, like, two lines of dialogue, you know, and

if anything you could use... we could learn about

him, like... through daredevil like daredevil

you can stumble upon daredevil and that you know

you can go through it that way so That that has

me intrigued I'm looking forward to it and I

you know Maybe it will lead to a Punisher series

because I think for everyone's always been talking

about Punisher would be bass in the TV series

So maybe this could you know be the foothold

into getting that done So and I've heard some

other rumors that you know, I think we talked

about it, but I doubt it's gonna happen You know

Jason Seatham and that talk, you know that do

bullseye which would be amazing That would be

awesome. I don't know if it would ever happen.

I was talking to Mike Powers on Twitter from

Geekcast Radio 2, and you mentioned, I guess,

Jason Statham did have some bad words to say

regarding Marvel's action overall, though. So

I don't know if that would hurt his chances of

joining their team. But yeah, I guess like a

couple of years ago or something, he said he

would never do a Marvel movie or something like

that. And it's not technically a movie. Right.

But see, people like some of the some spies or

whatever saw him like meeting with Marvel or

whatever and I know it's big rumors, but Spies

are Like yeah, like if they watching me at the

comic store like what I buy and everything like

That's what I do Chuck like okay You know, Avenger

stuff is up this week. This week is Punisher.

Yeah, like what, you know, what, like the vision

of NSA is the people that check out the Marvel

cast. It's like, we have news Jason Statham is

meeting with Marvel to discuss. Yeah. It's the

MSA, the Marvel security agency. Yeah. So it's

interesting. And I think sometimes people just

throw that stuff out there for clickbait, obviously.

But I think even Jason Statham might as well

as I would be cool. We'll see. We'll see. I think

you kind of have to bring in. Bullseye and Electra

next season, right? I mean, that's gotta be Yeah

All right. Anything else before we take a quick

break? Nope. Alrighty, so we'll take a quick

break and when we come back what we'll be doing

is kind of looking back at some of our list of

shame to see if we were able to catch up with

anything and then see if we could maybe reclaim

some of the geek cred that we lost so we'll see

you in a bit Hey guys, this is JD from the in

session film podcast every week on our show You

can join my co -host Brendan and I as we review

the latest films that's out in theaters It also

inspires us to discuss a top three list of some

sort and we have a lot of other fun movie discussions

as well It's always a blast and we also have

a show on Fridays called our extra film podcast

This is a show that gives us the space to talk

about the latest Indies and art films and other

classics that we normally just don't get to talk

about on our main show. You can find our podcast

on iTunes, Stitcher Radio, SoundCloud, TuneIn

Radio, Player FM, and more. In fact, you can

just see everything about us, including our social

medias at InSessionFilm .com. So join us every

week. We'd absolutely love to have you. Alrighty

and welcome back if you have not listened a few

weeks ago or why I say weeks But it was really

months ago We we had to come clean and we had

to announce to the world some infamous geek properties

that we have yet to check out and a lot of us

had a number of them and we kind of then try

to pick a few to knock off our list and and Greg

I think well I think it's time for you to come

to the table and you were able to scratch one

off your list and I'm curious to see what you

caught up with and what your overall opinion

of it is. Forgive me, Odin, for I have sinned.

It has been, what, six weeks since my confession.

of not seeing alien uh dan very graciously uh

lent me his copy of alien and alien 2 it's been

a while since i actually watched them because

he gave them to me a while back so please forgive

me if i'm forgetting stuff but i thought the

first one was really good it was it was very

basic kind of horror story if you ask me it was

very interesting that they set it in space and

if i wasn't from What is it? It's way over a

decade old, right? It's like at least 20 years

old Okay, so yeah, so it's 20 plus years old

and so for that I'm placing my mindset in that

area era That concept is really mind -blowing

Lee. Awesome. Really great suspense Of course,

it's got and I'm forgetting her name right now.

It's an orgy. It's an orgy. No, it's an orgy.

It's an orgy I do know snorty. She's a Swedish

word. Yeah, she's a weaver It's it's got Sigourney

we have the way you say it Sigourney dream weaver

Dream weaver. Yes, and she does a great job as

always one thing I'm gonna go super super sexual

as usual for me and It's it's completely different

subject off the track and has nothing to do with

her acting ability, which is superb as always

I never get why guys always think she's hot.

She's very interesting looking I'm not gonna

say she's ugly, but she's just this very She

has an interesting look to her I don't know,

but she does a great job in the role nonetheless

that has nothing to do with movie review honor

or nor should it but First one was good, but

it was kind of basic. I liked the second one

a lot more. I felt like it had a little bit more

of the story to it. Paul Reiser kind of took

me out of it a little bit. I kept thinking about

something about you, the TV show that he was

on. I'm like, I couldn't really take him seriously

in there for whatever reason. I felt like he

was completely out of place. I like to, and here's

a weird one, I like the credit sequence better

in the first one with how Alien came on the screen,

how it was spaced across the top of the screen.

I thought that was kind of interesting in how

it came in and everything. You could definitely

tell that there was a person in the first one

in the Alien costume. And I think the whole concept

of the alien creature is kind of interesting

and its look is kind of interesting, but I wish

it was a little less looking like a human in

kind of a suit with this giant weird oblong helmet

on. I found that aspect to be a little weird.

But overall, I thought it was a good movie. I

have seen parts of it before and it kind of did

leave up. My feelings about it beforehand without

seeing it It was about equal to now viewing it

is it was kind of what I thought it was for them

for the most part I did I do love that acid spit

though that acid spits kind of cool and it kind

of creeps me out But yeah, I caught up on alien.

It was pretty good. I don't feel better or worse

No, not really to be quite honest, I don't know

what really is that Kind of set me up that way

I feel like if I stopped back in the day It would

kind of have more of that feel to me of awesomeness

but it's just kind of like another movie to me

and I'm like, okay I could see why they liked

it back in the day and why it has such a esteem

to it but and There were the great lines in there

game over man Stuff like that was was kind of

neat by Tells his name now Bill Paxton. Yes.

He does a great job as always but yeah other

than that It was just okay interesting. I mean

I love alien It's like within my top ten probably

favorite films of all time and it's funny because

when I saw alien aliens for the first time Which

I don't know maybe it's probably like eight years

ago Well, like when I sat down to watch them

I watched them on cable But I bought them and

and checked them out and I remember the first

time I liked Aliens more it's definitely more

action -based and you know directed by James

Cameron But over yeah over like in our last decade

or so It's kind of they've kind of flip -flopped

for me and I do think Alien is certainly pacing

wise slower more gradual and I do think it yeah,

you can almost as hurt in some ways by its infamy

like it's by being so famous because a lot of

what it a lot of its famous scenes have been

so overplayed like the chest bursting scene and

The fact that we're Ripley has become such an

iconic Character like in the first movie like

she is badass in the first movie like she's just

kind of a side character when that's kind of

what's interesting about it that she like you

think that she'll be the first one dead and Obviously

she isn't so I think that it's kind of hurt it

in some ways But well, I never thought she would

be the first one dead Yeah, I mean like she doesn't

seem like she's not in the forefront There are

a lot of other characters that you think okay

these if you like didn't know anybody would assume

They would be the main characters, but she becomes

kind of the main character eventually. But uh,

yeah, I love Interesting. Yeah, I do think sometimes

with certain films, build up is almost like expectations

almost for anything is always a bad thing. It's

almost impossible to live up to that. But Dan

also did give me the Terminator films, which

I have yet to watch. So I would say with that

one, you could, you know, Terminator 1, Terminator

2, and well, I don't know, Terminator 3 is kind

of pleasant. It's, you know, it's fine. But I

think you need Terminator 3 to tie in some of

the The story it was Skynet though. Yeah, and

then I need a Terminator Genesis for Amelia Clarke.

You do I love you Amelia. I have yet to see the

movie yet I feel like I have because I watched

the recent trailer which is like everything so

Yeah, I stopped my brother was talking to me

the one night and I kind of just Like, he was

talking to me. I saw that the commercial came

on. I put my hand in his face to make him stop

talking. And I watched the trailer and I turned

back to him. I'm like, okay, what were you saying?

He's like, I didn't know you liked Terminator.

I'm like, I've never seen any of the films. I'm

like, I just stopped because I wanted to see

Emilia Clarke. He's like, okay. Interesting.

Alrighty. Very cool. And I know, Chuck, you and

kind of a different rom altogether, you know,

Greg had his movies he watched and you kind of

try to catch up with some infamous comics based

upon a property that we all love this kid. So

I'm curious to hear what you thought of those.

Yes. And I know like my list originally, I had

the X -Men Age of Apocalypse on there, which

unfortunately I did not get to read all the way

through. I read a little bit of it. I do like

what I've read so far, but I'm really not that

far into it at all. And so I don't, I don't feel

comfortable talking about it too much. So you

could, you know, that story is gigantic and there's

like three volumes of it. So yeah. So yeah. Well,

four, I have four books of that. So yeah, that's

going to be a while, but I kind of got out of

the X -Men mood. I was in a Avengers mood for

a while. I wonder where that is. Yeah, I don't

know. It's almost like some big motion picture

came out or something. So are you are you in

an Ant -Man mood right now then or? No, probably

after I see it I will be but I will say the current

Ant -Man series. I'm really loving it's quite

good. Really? Yeah, I like it a lot like I knew

nothing of Scott Lang at all as a character,

but I started reading that and it's I like it

a lot. It's very like self -deprecating and kind

of funny. It reminds me of Deadpool before he

became too much of Deadpool in that way, where

it's like he - What?! More it's like the humor

is - he has this, you know, this quirky sidekick

that - who's dressed up in a bear suit. He reminds

me of like Cable in Deadpool, where Deadpool

had the sidekick of Bob the Hydra agent. You

know, for no apparent reason. It was just like

- it was just really random in that end, so.

The Deadpool series that - I've actually been

really good too, so the current one has been

pretty good. I don't know. Sorry. Tangent. Nice.

No, that's okay. Did you see the new Ant -Man

posters that came out today or whatever? I did.

Oh, I did. That's pretty cool. They have them

on the cap's shield and Thor's hammer and Iron

Man's shoulder and stuff. Very nice. Pretty neat.

Yeah, basically I think the second thing on my

list that... All the listeners voted for was

a James Bond movie, which I've never seen any

James Bond movies. And the only one I had access

to for a little while, I think was Skyfall, which

was on Netflix. And I kind of was like putting

it off and I'm like, I had it on my list. I'm

like, all right, I'll watch it. So I go on the

one night and it was gone. They took it off there.

So didn't get to see that either. But so I guess.

I sort of substituted something and this is something

that should have been on my list of shameless

anyway. And that was the original Teenage Mutant

Ninja Turtles comics from Eastman and Laird in

1984. And I went ahead and bought myself the

first volume and it's called Teenage Mutant Ninja

Turtles Color Classics. It's called the works

volume one and the cover it's a big book really

big book and the cover looks like a pizza box

it's like the the color of the cardboard and

it has little red checkers on it and everything

and It's really cool Inside the cover. There's

like a pizza like a huge picture of a pizza and

everything That's funny cuz I didn't realize

that the whole pizza thing was in the original

I thought that was just something brought up

by the the cartoon so Because all I hear about

the original is like like, you know more adult

and violent so I had assumed like the the pizza

thing would be kind of a counterproductive to

that they don't like Talk about it like non -stop

like the cartoon does because I think that was

a way for them to really work to the kids like

because you know kids love pizza so The cartoon

was more of a way to connect with them. I really

like how they did this specific volume that I

bought the The table of contents in the beginning,

it's really set up like a menu at a pizza shop.

And there's a little section like it says appetizers

and actually lists like garlic bread, jalapeno

poppers, hot wings. And it has the prices and

everything. But then they'll have like a thing

where it says credits and it gives like the coloring,

the artists, the layout, all that stuff. But

it's really set up like a menu and it looks really,

really cool. because it says, or enjoy the works.

And then it's like a pun, huh? The works. So

have that. That was terrible. That was my new

jersey. But, you know, and then at least it's

got the first seven issues of Teenage Mutant

Ninja Turtles. And it also has the Raphael one

shot is from a micro series. It was a Raphael

story where him and. Casey Jones sort of met

and fought actually a lot like they did that

one love. Yeah. But, uh, this, the reason I went

with the color version was just because I got

to sample it at a, uh, book's a million store

by where I live. I looked at one that was black

and white and I looked at the color one. I know

the originals are black and white and there's

probably going to be some people saying like,

you got to go with the original. You got to go

black and white, but the black and white just

didn't pop to me. Like, and a lot of the things

in the backgrounds, I thought, uh, blended together

and it was kind of hard to discern, discern what

was going on in some of the panels and stuff.

The recolored version like really just pops to

me like the greens on all the turtles and it

still has a very dark Feel to it though the way

they did it like It's still I think it still

holds the same tone that the original does but

it's just the color is just amazing So interesting

because I know you when you said you you watched

you watched a trip to the moon You saw that in

color and this in color So are you are you do

you think in general not a big fan of black and

white like movie or in comic form? No, I do like

like black and white Actually, I think the black

and white trip to the moon is better. Oh, yeah

Because I think the recall recolored version

by Michael Jackson was a good song Honestly,

uh, I don't really know that one. Okay, good

Probably what? I know like thriller What's the

other one Mama say mama saw I don't know whatever

it is I'm ashamed of the sight of my moccasins

as Jimmy Fallon says But uh, yeah, I really like

this volume it's really cool it's bad Trying

to think of the price here $50, but I got on

the Amazon for 35 So if anybody's interested

in picking it up, but I was interested in buying

it. I'm just saying I can give you a deal Yeah,

so it's you for 50 bucks. It's amazing how much

the movie took straight from this. I hadn't realized

like, you know, that it was taken so closely

from this with the initial story. They kind of

jump right into the creation of the turtles,

like Splinter's kind of retelling the story.

You learn about Shredder and in one way. And

again, I'll throw out a spoiler warning here.

anyone really doesn't want this ruined. I guess

you could skip ahead a couple of minutes, but

since it's been out for over 30 years, I don't

know if really to worry about it. But it's based

upon, you know, there's been movies and everything.

Right. But in this actual story, it's a little

bit different than the movie because Splinter's

kidnapped and the turtles kind of have to go

after him and they are forced to face Shredder

because of that. But in this one. The whole reason

splinter is training them is to go after shredder

Because he is his enemy and he wants to get him

back so they actually do their homework and find

out where he's gonna be they go on this rooftop

and They know he's gonna be there and they kind

of shout out like shredder face us and everything

so he drops down and they have this big battle

and I know in the movie They really made him

a little bit more untouchable than they did in

the comic. The turtles in the movie really couldn't

do anything against them, and Splinter kind of

had to come in and save their butts. But in the

comic, they actually work together really well,

and it is really tough for them. Shredder kind

of, you know, beats them up and cuts them up

pretty bad, but working together, they eventually

get the best of him. Leo actually puts a sword

right through shredder's torso nice and then

he's about to like throw a grenade or something

and Donnie throws his bowstaff hits him right

in the jaw and kind of knocks him off the roof

and then it explodes and seemingly kills him

but they basically beat him on their own working

together as a team which is totally different

from the movie where they couldn't touch him

and Splinter had to take him out so thought that

was really interesting Haven't read that but

I did started reading like the fur the team the

IDW series that I know TFG one might pull up

pull back talks about all the time and it's a

you know, I The first I don't know six to twelve

issues were okay, but it really got quite good

as it went beyond that I enjoyed Good deal, especially

if you're a turtle fan, I would recommend it

and what's interesting about that They kind of

added like a little bit of a you know reboot

to it where? there's like almost a reincarnation

angle they take they take with the turtles and

the shredder and Splinter and like explaining

why these turtles like how the skills they do

and the British but brother ship that they have

so it's interesting a little bit of a like a

slight adjustment. And I guess that's kind of

common because I know a lot of the different

series for turtles tend to change things up quite

a bit. But I did kind of like that way they did

it, where it kind of gave more explanation to

why these guys were such great fighters, you

know, besides just like watching and training

and stuff like that. Yeah. And the the personalities,

they really, you know, you could see where you

could see the influence there on the other media,

like the um, movie and the cartoons and stuff.

Raphael, you know, he has an anger issue, but

he's really like, he's really a deep guy. And

it's in the second or third issue. I forget when

the, the mousers sort of, uh, find their lair

and Splinter's fighting them off. And he gets

captured by some, a couple of TCRI workers or

whatever. And it's at that point where the turtles

kind of, uh, have to go stay with April O 'Neill.

So it's, you can see the The movie was sort of

an amalgam of the first few issues, like they

changed it a little bit, but it's the same basic

stuff. But at that point, like when Splinter's

gone, Raphael takes it really hard. Even in the

comic, he goes out on his own to try to do something

about it by himself. So like a lot of that stuff

was like straight from this and I never realized

that, but it's really cool. And I would say if.

The original ninja turtle comics are on your

list of shame I would highly recommend checking

them out because you will not be disappointed

Very nice. Very nice. So you feel like your geek

credit go up by watching by reading them. This

is one. Absolutely I went up at least 10 points.

So you're a greg have you read them at all? No,

I have not so you're currently higher than greg

and I so So I personally had a lot of stuff for

my geeky shame and The one I think that ended

up getting most votes which I wasn't too surprised

by which was the infamous firefly series which

I never watched and I will start this by because

I feel like I'm gonna anger a lot of people I

will start this by saying that I think It hurt

me that I saw Serenity before watching the Firefly

series for a number of reasons. For one, it's

just, like, special effects -wise. It's such

a, obviously, because you have a movie compared

to a TV show. Huge step down. And there's two.

It's like, you know, starting a story by reading

the last chapter and then going back and reading

the beginning chapter. And it's, you know, it's

always been kind of spoiled to me in some ways,

but... I will say, you know, I did enjoy Firefly.

I think it's quite enjoyable. It has everything

you expect from Whedon. Great characters, great

interaction as a team. I think he does right

teams really well and he has the benefit with

something like Firefly compared to that of the

Avengers is that the characters can be a lot...

more balanced because they're different personalities

and or in their more wide ranging where you have

some more lower key characters and Hotheads and

things like that. So there's more of a range

to play with which ends up too much more interesting

dynamic within the team and Ethan Fillion is

fantastic. You know, you can definitely see like

the influences of Han Solo to Indiana Jones,

the classic westerns, and they really push that

western sci -fi motif a great deal. Sometimes

I think a little, a little too much. A little

bit. Well, I think they try a little too hard

to make it, but overall, though, I think it works

well. It makes sense. And I haven't finished

the complete series. I think I have an episode

or two left. I will say that I definitely think

it's good for the time and if you look at other

sci -fi series that came out around that time,

it's Probably well, there's not many they really

compare it to for me. It's I would say it's far

superior than that like if I look at The first

season of Firefly compared to like the first

season of the reboot of Doctor Who like they're

not I mean I think I think most people would

agree that Firefly is you know leaps and bounds

better than that first season Doctor Who just

overall it's just more brightly polished even

the camera work is is much more impressive those

little things they do and how they use space

and one of the few places that you space without

in putting any sound and that's kind of cool

to see especially in a tv atmosphere the question

is i feel like people rank this as like one of

the best tv shows of all time or one of the best

science fiction shows of all time and i I'm hesitant

to kind of put it up that much. I mean as someone

who's watching it like 12 years later It's similar

to greg what you said with alien It's hard. I'm

sure if I liked it if I watched it at the time.

I probably would have liked it a lot more. It's

just By comparison, like TV has grown so much

over that time with the capabilities of TV and,

you know, what you're able to do is like look

at something like Daredevil, you know, even like

Hannibal, which recently started against other

shows. They look fantastic. They look like movies.

So it's there's been such a growth since then.

So it's almost unbalanced. But I will say if

you just look at what it was able to do for one

season, it is remarkable and deserved more. And

I think if it was able to stay on longer, thanks,

Fox would have kind of. gotten better, and maybe

even gotten to be even more iconic along the

lines of Star Trek. I've never watched Battle

Star Galactica, but I assume it would be along

those lines too. I will say though, I think the

movie is... by far better than the tv series

i don't know if that's sacrilegious or not i

don't know how the you know the the fans feel

about that but i just brown coats are gonna take

you out there i think i think the insect is better

than both of them well fireflies are pretty sweet

i mean like i remember catching them as a kid

that was a lot of fun yeah it was but i don't

know where you i know greg you've watched the

series right So I'm curious. Yes. So do you have

a preference between the series and the movie?

Do you think one's better than the other? Not

really. I liked both of them pretty much the

same amount. It really was just good all around

for me because at that time I liked westerns.

Now I'm kind of a little over them at this point.

And then crossed with sci -fi. I thought it was

a pretty interesting mix. So I really enjoyed

them and I was kind of sad when I ran out of

Episodes to watch so yeah, yeah Yeah, i'm not

saying just so the brown couch don't get crazy

i'm not saying it's a bad show or I wouldn't

even use the term overrated I'm more saying so

saying like when you get separated from tv, especially

during that time span it it's a little bit more

difficult like um Even say if I watch the x -files

today I would assume a lot of that stuff would

probably not hold up nearly as well. It's just

so you You're saying the movie is better than

the series for me. I think so. I said, OK, because

I have not seen the movie. I did see the a lot

of the series, but it was a long time ago, probably

like 10 years ago. But and I'm going to have

to check out the was my first introduction to

true ideology for who, you know, when I was in

12 years of slave and is also going to be playing

Baron Zima, not Baron Zima, but Baron Mordo,

which is interesting. But I remember like watching

that movie. then and thinking like that guy would

be the perfect Black Panther. But, you know.

Yeah. Yeah. I always thought that too. So, I

mean, I still, Chadwick Boseman could probably

still do a good job, but I always thought like

he would be a great Black Panther. But, you know,

you live and you learn, but yeah, very cool.

So I will try to look at some, I tried to also...

Other things on my list were like Watchmen and

Dark Knight Returns I didn't the comic and I

have yet to do that I'm kind of hesitant to read

Dark Knight Returns because I've already watched

the cartoon movie So again, I don't know if that's

again like a sacrilegious and also saw Watchmen

the movie Which I know is not nearly as good

quote -unquote as the as the comic but I Actually

like the movie better to be quite honest Is it

is it because of the female nudity? Or is it

because of Dr. Manhattan's nudity? Nudity, no.

It's because I didn't really like the mini story

kind of within the story, the pirate story. I

could care less about that, but it did play kind

of an integral thing to the rest of the movie,

so it was kind of necessary. Then you have the

ultimate edition version of Watchmen, which does

weave that storyline. because they didn't make

it like a separate animated film. Yeah, I know

they made it a separate animated film, but I

don't have that ultimate edition copy. I've heard

bad things, so probably better put her off that

way. We're closing off that list of shame, and

Chuck, I guess when we meet again, what I'll

have to do is give you my Bond 50th edition box

set in Skyfall so you can try to watch one before.

We do have the next Bond movie coming out this

year. Highly anticipating and actually, you know

what speaking of bond it does kind of segue nice

into the letter that I did have for today because

fortunately Christopher Lee who played one of

the most iconic bond villains of all time passed

away today as we're recording this So I did want

to kind of I wrote a letter for him Sometimes

it can be good to be bad or in Christopher Lee's

case. It can be great The iconic actor Christopher

Lee recently passed away, and he leaves with

him a legacy many would only dream of. The guy

has played more villains than anyone could count,

and if there was ever a Hall of Fame for actors

who make great villains, he would be in the first

ballot. He has ruled Middle Earth, he has gone

toe to toe with 007, he has worn the cape of

Dracula, and he's even fought Yoda in the lightsaber

battle and walked away to talk about it. Beyond

just that of playing iconic villains, he'd also

have quite the incredible life. He's been knighted

and was even a veteran in World War II. Christopher

Lee is the type of actor that As cliche as it

sounds, they don't make any more. Those that

are not really afraid to play bizarre roles in

really strange and odd movies that are admittedly

often really bad, but Christopher Lee is always

really good. He just seems like a type of guy

who's not really afraid to take on anything and

just looking to have fun. The guy even released

a heavy metal album. Christopher Lee has a heavy

metal album. Not many people could say that.

If anything, if you're a fan of villains, you

have to appreciate that of Christopher Lee. He

set the archetype for what it meant to be a James

Bond villain. He wasn't loud over the top or

extremely evil. He was classy. He was subdued.

He just had that elegance and that inerrogance

that made him seem better than you. And it's

the type, if you see anyone try to intimidate

a Bond villain, it's really, it's really much

of what Lee brought to the table that they're

trying to take from. So as we are looking at

another Bond film coming out this year, there's

no doubt that even the great Christopher Wall

owes something to that of Christopher Lee. So

Lee, I would like to thank you for everything

you've done, from being a veteran to being a

knight, to holding the golden gun. You leave

a legacy many wish they could dream of, many

children have nightmares of. I feel like we too

many people good people have died since we started

doing this podcast. So maybe I don't know if

that's a bad sign, you know Maybe our podcast

is poised. Maybe you know, like harold ramis

and uh robin williams. It's just you know, it

was good to keep going Keep back. I'm christopher

lee. He was he really was amazing and I Absolutely

loved his stuff. I loved him as count dooku in

star wars obviously and the original dracula

And the guy's voice to you like such an iconic

voice like He even had that part nailed down

about playing a villain like just I mean You

didn't even have to see him like you could hear

him and be like, yeah He's a bad guy and you

don't want to mess with them. Like the guy's

just incredible. Yeah very much so and I Don't

even like the man with the golden gun that much

but he's he's a great character. So I like that

I'm kind of cheesy guys. I'm not sure if you

noticed or not. I'm kind of I didn't mean that

as a as a as a diss I mean like cheesy. I like

cheesy movies too, but that is like that is very

much I also like my pizza cheesy. I like that.

I like my mozzarella sticks cheesy your cheese

sticks Yeah, very nice grilled cheese cheesy,

but also Also mentioned real quick on a another

sad note We lost, um famous wrestler dusty roads

as well on the same day, too I I i'm not very

familiar with I mean, I watched wrestling a lot

growing up but like he was Like I think before

our time and like I was always kind of I mean

I know with sons, you know dusting roads But

I never really watched him wrestle. I know he

He kind of was Towards the end of his career

when I started watching in there in the early

90s and stuff there But I know he was like best

friends with Hulk Hogan or whatever Yeah, and

I and like he did a lot of I mean in WCW He was

you know announcer for a really long. That's

what I kind of knew him from mostly It was the

announcer of Saturday Night Live not that much

Saturday Night Live. That's a completely different

show Question it's his son Golda. Yeah, okay

That's a son and then gold Which I can't believe

that guy's still wrestling like he was the goldest

was like a thing when I was a kid in the 90s

And he's still going strong So he is ultra creepy

and like the last time I saw him with the gold

paint and the gold body suit Everything's creepy

thought that'd be a gimmick that would last 30

years, but hey, you know I just remember like

how much people hated that character like it.

That's funny. So Yeah, but anyways randomly random

wrestling tangent But there are before we go,

let's give you all the ways to contact us You

let me bring up Twitter. It's right on top of

my notifications. I literally got something that

said, oh, planet weird. See, I get weird stuff

actually following me. Awesome. See, I actually

I did get a weird thing. It was um It was a Miami

follow me off but and So I followed them like

alright, maybe they've news and stuff and then

You can edit out the creepy parts. We wouldn't

have a podcast okay it would be you know yeah

you need it a little is it weird that you guys

call it t i c i call it t in c i whenever i do

anything like the the drawings anymore i do t

in c you guys always i always abbreviate it t

i c i always like see that tick everywhere so

yeah and i i think of tick the the blue superhero

we just went on a very weird tangent here i'm

sorry everybody We're very random tonight. Yeah,

that's a type of show Alrighty and I don't know

if I didn't give my Twitter name, which is that

movie revolved and Yeah, I get we are Twitter

followers all the time. I don't know why that

is but You could also listen to the podcast on

nerdly .co .uk For all our British fans. We have

British fans. I don't know or also Also besides

Nerdly, you can go on BlogTalkRadio .com. It's

also a great place to check out. I noticed that

we had a few comments on there, which I did not

realize, and so we didn't get to those. I apologize

because I was not checking. I'll try to do that

more often. Oh, I'm going to have to check that.

Was it something good? It was the Annoying Celebrity

episode. I think there's a few mentions of people

that people felt should also be added. Oh, okay.

Do you remember offhand or no? I don't know.

Oh, okay. But yeah, so you can check us out there,

which is a great site. They have a lot of cool

little features and whatnot. So anyways, though,

I think the raininess has come to end. So it's

time to time to bring this podcast to end. But

it's OK, because we'll be back next week. Same

time, same channel, same podcast feed. But for

now, this has been Chuck. This has been Greg,

or Schmorgie, or however Dan pronounces Sigourney

Weaver's name. And I don't even know, and this

has been Dan, and we've been Talking in Circles.

We'll see you next week. I think if any episode

lived up to the title was Talking in Circles,

it was definitely an incident. Oh, especially

at the end there. Sorry, I went on hand -in -handions.

I got Emily Ratajkowski stuck in my brain. I

just made her rage! We just all simultaneously

acquired ADD at the end of that episode. Oh look,

a squirrel!
