Talking in Circles
Marvel Legends, DC Rebirth, and X-Men: Apocalypse Review

About this Episode
Hey, this is Steve blue and you are listening
to the geek cast radio network You are now on
the inside of what I like to call the circle
of trust You're all connected the great circle
of life You know something Bert I think you and
I are going in circles It feels like we're going
in circles. The circuit is now complete. When
I left you, I was but the learner. Now I am the
master. Because it's a circle. Yeah, we heard
about the circle. Yes, we're familiar with shapes.
Hi, this is Joe. This is Greg. And this is Dan.
And we are Talking in Circles brought to you
by... The podcast is giving you the apocalypse
in two straight episodes. Yes, last week we tried
to start our own apocalypse by crafting our own
Four Horsemen. With this week, we'll be discussing
the latest film in the X -Men franchise, X -Men
Apocalypse. But before we get to that, how's
the week been going for you guys? My week was
kind of interesting. I guess I'll tell you guys
a quick little funny story that actually resulted...
as the recording from last week's episode. Really?
After we, after we finished recording last week's
episode, you know, we, we obviously we use Skype
to make the call and everything. And we each
kind of have our little recordings to make sure
we got all our bases covered. And usually like,
you know, I close out Skype and I close out the
recorder and it saves automatically. So I don't
even have to do anything. So I closed all the
programs and I was kind of getting ready to go
to bed, but I was playing a little game first.
It was actually one of the old school Tron games,
like the one from the 80s. Nice, nice. So I was
playing that a little bit, kind of gets me a
little sleepy and I was getting ready to go to
bed. So I'm playing that and I kind of finish
up, I close the laptop, I fall asleep. And the
next morning I wake up and I was going to send
Dan the file for what I recorded and I looked
in the folder where it automatically saves the
recordings and I see this huge file. I mean it's
like hundreds of thousands of kilobytes and I'm
like that's kind of weird you know like usually
it's not that high so like I click on the thing
to kind of start listening to it to check it
and I hear us talking, recording. I skip ahead
a little bit in the bar and it's, you know, like
the end of our episode, like us wrapping up and
there's still all this time left on like the
play bar. And I'm like, what the hell happened
here? So like I'm advancing throughout the play
bar and like, I hear the little like Tron noises
from the game playing and I'm like, what the
hell? So then I advance a little more and then
all of a sudden I hear me snoring. Like I would
hear silence and I'm like, Oh man, that's so
weird. And that's like, and it's like periodic
throughout. And I'm like, Oh my God. I literally
somehow recorded myself sleeping the entire night.
Nice. So weird. And like, so then I started like
checking to see like like I wonder if there's
any like, you know EVP like any voices going
on in my room while I'm sleeping or something
But then I creeped out so I stopped listening
I have no idea how it happened. I'm pretty sure
you had an EVP that went Infinity Gauntlet, pizza's
so good. So it recorded you even though you closed
your laptop? Yeah, well I closed the programs,
like I exited, and I closed the laptop, which
puts it into sleep mode automatically. That's
insane, wow. Somehow, someway, it still recorded
me all night, which is, I still can't figure
out how it did that, but it actually made two
copies, like it did end the one where I ended
it. Yeah, so I had like a decent one. It was
still kind of messed up a little bit, but Then
there was this really long one so I just deleted
it That's pretty much useless Yeah, really strange
the thing you checked like that day and that
like days later and it was still going it was
like right I know All right, I just got back
home from Sorry, I was gonna phrase it very terribly.
I was out eating at a restaurant with my mother
we went to Primanti Brothers because I actually
Went out to eat with Chuck right after we saw
X -Men and we went to Primanti Brothers and I
came Home and I told my mom i'm like, oh they
have this is a drink this blue alcoholic beverage
And they put a little uh rubber ducky in it And
so like for for the next couple of days She was
like I want to go to permany brothers and get
that drink with a little duck in it I want to
go to permany brothers get the little drink with
a little duck in it So we went to permany brothers
with the main mission of getting her this little
blue drink with a little rubber ducky in it So
she was so excited for that. Uh The drink was
meh, so it was kind of like an adult happy meal
Some kind of like pineapple rum Some Morocco,
I think it's called on water, you know Yeah,
and there was something else that I don't remember
what it was. It was it was very very sweet Not
that great if you ask me I cry into it now. Um,
it's, it's the, it's the Karako I believe that
makes it blue. It's kind of a bluish green. It
was a very pretty color and it was cool with
a little duck sitting in it, but it didn't taste
that great. The sandwich was really good that
I had. Do you get to keep the duck? Yes. She
has the duck. Yes, they apparently ran out of
ducks last week Yeah, my mom's like very happy
that she she was there when they had Reupped
on their ducks Gotta gotta get a re -up cuz like,
you know, you never know when they're gonna go
away so yeah, and she she had a good time cuz
I ordered retro tots and I had those with when
both of you guys were in I had retro tots and
I had her try some of those and she was she thought
those were great and she was like stealing half
of them off me, but she had a Pastrami and I
had a roast beef sandwich. And if you didn't
listen to the other episodes where we talk about
pramanis, it's a sandwich where you get thick
slices of white bread. They put a meat and a
cheese on there. That's on the menu. There are
different options. And then it's French fries,
vinegar based coleslaw, French fries and tomatoes
all on the sandwich and bunched together. So
that was really good. I take the tomatoes off
though. Yeah, tomatoes are gross, but yes speaking
of alcohol the last time we record it was Memorial
Day weekend and each Memorial Day weekend we
go to this thing called Flavor Fest and I went
again this year. It's this wine festival, wine
tasting festival and it's outside of Philly.
It's like a Pennsylvania Renaissance Fair, which
is a lot of fun. So it did show our age though
because we missed last year because my son was
born, but we went this year. We lasted about
like less than an hour because it was like ungodly
hot. It had been like near a hundred degrees.
So we like Went to a few places. We got, we only
got like five bottles of wine because we went,
we still want wine from last time we weren't
there. And then we went straight to our friends
who were in the same area. We went to their home
and they had a pool and went swimming. So I got
to take my son swimming for the first time and
he adored it. Uh, I don't know what it says,
but like, he has no fear. He just like wants
to go like headfirst right into the water. So
I got to try to not teach him, but he also, he
took his first steps, which was exciting. Um,
yeah, of course. trying to chase bubbles because
they have magical powers for kids so as an attempt
to chase bubbles down he started walking so they
are they are a miracle uh i guess he would i
don't know what you'd call them they're not a
miracle toy i don't know But I would be chasing
after a different type of bubble. I would be
chasing after bubble butts. There you go. Yeah.
Bubble bubble bubble. That's an old song. But
that's been my week. But Chuck, I do know if
also this week there was some announcements when
it comes to that of the Marvel Legends, which
you're a big fan of. So I was curious if we have
some new toys coming out and if anything caught
your eye. Oh, yes. the Marvel Legends. I've been
a huge fan of these ever since they came out.
I think I've been collecting these for a good
10 or 12 years now. I don't know. I forget exactly
how long it's been. But yeah, we knew most of
what was coming out this year. There were still
a couple of surprises that we didn't know yet.
But one of the biggest waves anticipated was
the X -Men Marvel Legend wave. And there was
a great character lineup in that. I think we
knew from Toy Fair in February that they had,
like, there was Cable, there was a new Deadpool,
Phoenix, Kitty Pryde, a new Iceman. I know I'm
forgetting one right now, but really, really
great character lineup. And then it was just
revealed that, what was it, a few days ago or
last week. That they the eighth figure in the
wave was the brown costume Wolverine And they
did make one back in the day the toy biz version
Which was good for back then but as the case
with a lot of the figures now It's kind of time
for an update because they're really cranking
out some great stuff right now The sculpts are
amazing and like just the face sculpts and the
stuff too are just like there's so much like
statues now It's like it doesn't even look like
a toy anymore So the the brown costume Wolverine
was pretty great and and obviously with that
came They showed the packaging of it and in it
was the head of juggernaut Obviously revealing
that the builder figure for the wave would be
a juggernaut You never would think you would
find juggernaut's head and Wolverine's package
Wow Yeah, it might cause it to stretch yeah There's
a there's a I'm the juggernaut bitch comment
somewhere there, but So I'm really excited about
the juggernaut build a figure because We got
one back in the day. It was I don't know. It
was kind of crappy the toy biz version The Marvel
Select version actually really, really nice.
I have that one. I like it a lot. But this one's
cool as well. It'd be good to have another version
of it just because Juggernaut's one of my favorite
characters. And it looks really, really cool,
really detailed and everything. They even show
like all the bolts on the helmet and stuff like
that. It's crazy. But so there's that wave. And
then they also announced that along with that
going up on a lot of websites for pre -order
is the new Spider -Man series. I think it's the
fourth Spider -Man Legends wave under the new
ones. And that's got some pretty cool ones. They
have a lot of the new characters mixed in with
that as well. They have the ultimate Spider -Man,
a Peter Parker version, and they have a Miles
Morales version. Both of those are really nice.
They have a silk figure. They have the Ashley
Barton Spider -Woman from one of Greg's favorite
stories there, Old Man Logan. And they have really,
really cool hobgoblin and electro figures. That's
kind of like the classic electro version. I just
saw a picture today they released where I think
he's going to have swappable heads. So he's going
to have the old timey like star looking head
with the five points coming off of it. And then
he's going to have a little bit more modern ones,
stuff like that. So I think the build a figure
in that wave is a space venom. Which i'm not
really familiar with because I haven't been uh
reading a lot of new stuff But it made me think
of ollie williams from family guy immediately
So i'm just like space venom Uh, what's his name
flash thompson is now venom and he was agent
venom and then he joined guardians the galaxy
and became space venom and now he He has his
own single issue like a comic that's been out.
I read the first couple of those It's actually
quite funny. I enjoyed it. There was this robot
that like wanted For some reason just wanted
to kill itself, but he wanted to let it kill
its I don't know It's a long story, but it's
like this it gets into the mythology of symbiotes
and maybe that they're not as evil as we may
think and So I always wanted to continue it but
I have not I've been majorly falling behind with
comics. So Yeah So if anybody's interested in
those they're they're up on a few sites. I think
big bad toy store has them Entertainment Earth,
I think Dorkside Toys, those two waves are up
for pre -order on those sites. I think they're
coming out either the end of this month or in
July at some point, so. Very cool, and actually
it's kind of along those same lines, but in the
realm of comics, even though I'm behind with
comics, and Greg, I know you read this as well,
DC did do their huge rebirth, relaunch, whatever
you want to call it. in d .c.'s rebirth the single
issue came out like 83 pages like three dollars
or so and uh yeah really good value and i know
you read it so what did you what did you think
of uh d .c.'s rebirth most of it was uh kind
of forgettable if you ask me but i forget a lot
but the last two pages which i'm not going to
spoil really knocked it out of the park for me
and is Making me really look forward to the potential
of what's going to happen in the DC universe
It's just an interesting concept. They're kind
of bringing in some New old characters. I'm looking
forward to that It seems like the rest of it
is just kind of like little updates of oh, this
is what's kind of going on with this character
This is kind of what's going on with this character
and there was a lot of in the first chapter There
was a lot of florally language kind of going
on. So I got kind of bogged down in that But
overall it was it was really good for for the
value and everything Definitely an interesting
concept that I got super excited about the end
made the whole thing worth it for me. Overall,
it was pretty decent. I wish DC would go back.
They have a new logo at this point and it's not
doing much for me. I liked this last logo that
they had where it kind of looked like a comic
page turning over from the D to the C that's
kind of behind it. I thought that was an interesting
concept. It looked nice and modern and the one
they have now looks kind of simple and old and
boring and So regarding rebirth, I actually really
love this year. I thought it was really fantastically
done and most certainly a commentary on basically
where DC comics have been in the last few years,
you know the idea of what they've turned into
in its Kind of pointing fingers without pointing
fingers talking about like how much DC characters
have changed and it just basically it centers
around without spoiling it I guess like a character
that's trying to travel around to be remembered
again really and you see like his escapades and
trying to do that and Not near the end of it.
Like when it comes to its resolution I thought
it was rather beautifully told and I thought
the artwork was really well done and The artwork
was really good. The final pages do kind of make
you wonder Okay, where is this going because
it does majorly a change DC in a way that maybe
we weren't expecting but it does seem like DC
is trying to go back to It almost felt like an
apology letter for the for the last few years
of DC Comics in a way where it's like, okay we
tried to do this thing and we tried to change
the tone of our comics and and they're missing
something and people are, when we're trying to
get that back and it's not just the continuity,
there was more to it than that. So it almost
felt like that was what it was designed to do,
which I did like, I'm hearing good things about
some of the DC rebirth issues that have come
out, like Batman and Superman. So I'd be curious
to see what those mean. And I guess it's... It
would probably would even be more effective for
I think a DC fan because there's probably things
about it that I'm not aware of because it's Talking
about stories and things of that in the past
that I'm not super aware of So in some characters
that I'm not super well versed in so if you are
you probably would enjoy it more But uh, it does
have me excited for where DC comics are going
And even if they are like rebooting for the 80th
time, you know It could end up being for the
for the best if they can kind of get back to
what made them good to begin with so Yeah, I
definitely think it's something Chuck should
pick up. I think you would find it interesting
Yeah, I think so too, especially considering
the characters that are the focal point of this
issue Yeah, I thought the character that was
setting it up was very interesting and well used
I'm not sure if I knew enough of the background
story behind that to kind of get all of it But
they they did a good job of trying to bring you
in a little bit and I think that's what kind
of took it down for me and made it a little forgettable
and like I said my My memory is terrible to begin
with. Yeah, I think I will definitely have to
check that out. Try to plan on picking it up
this weekend, hopefully, and give it a read.
I mean, yeah, like you mentioned, I mean, the
fact that it's like over 80 pages and it's like
three dollars is pretty good value just in that
end. So it's you know, when comics are getting
when Marvel is like charging more and more. And
got to say, like, I feel like DC is heading.
In a right direction where I don't know Marvel
seems kind of lost at the moment, but we'll see
we'll see how things go There are some good Marvel
comics out there, but they just I don't know.
We talked about the Steve Rogers thing last week.
I'm curious to see where that goes. Which I also
read and I don't get what the big deal is out
of it. It's like it's just a one page thing at
the end that they could easily be like he could
be like a double agent or something like it's
it's not that big of a deal. I feel like it's
automatically going to get switched to something
else. I don't get what people's big deal is.
yeah i don't know we'll see like you said i think
it's gonna be he was dead the entire time something
i don't know but uh yeah or it won't be him did
you see what uh stanley commented about it oh
no no i did not yeah someone asked him and he
actually he's like i think it's a great idea
he's like i never thought of doing that but he's
like it actually makes sense to you know try
to get more readers and stuff and like you know
he's He's thinking of it from still from the
business standpoint kind of like, you know bringing
in more readers and stuff But he he said I think
it's a great idea. You know, however, he talks
in Yeah, we'll see I'm gonna at least like I
said, I wasn't a huge fan of Nick Spencer's like
art with Captain America, Sam Wilson, but I'm
going to give it a couple issues. To me, the
bigger issue is the fact that his costume looks
awful. That to me is more important, but whatever.
What about the new shield that I heard about
today? Is there anything cool going on with that?
Not really. No, there's like a little laser like
knife thing that comes out from the bottom there
where it kind of comes to a point. I heard it
comes like it breaks apart in half or something
too. Not in the first issue that I can remember.
No, I don't remember doing that in the first
issue either, so. I don't know. It becomes like
he can slice it, he can dice it. It's, you know,
set it and forget it. It's trying to turn them
into Leonardo, you know? Yeah, exactly. But what
we're going to do is, speaking of comics, we're
going to take a quick break, and when we come
back, we'll be talking about X -Men Apocalypse.
And if you've not listened to our past review
episodes, what we'll do is we'll do a general
discussion about what we liked about it. And
so for those who have not listened, or for those
who have not watched the film, feel free to listen.
And then we'll do a specific spoiler section,
where we'll give you plenty of warning to get
into the nitty -gritty details. So we'll get
to that right after these messages. Hello, pop
culture connoisseurs. Do you gain a dark sense
of peace when the guilty are punished by a violent
vigilante? If so, maybe you should get some therapy,
and then subscribe to Punish Your Body Count,

no Terminator. Good luck with that. Punish your
body count. Twice a month on Geekcast Radio.
X -Men, Apocalypse, the franchise didn't spin
around for 16 years and I don't know, what is
this, the eighth, ninth, tenth movie? It's hard
to keep track of, there's a bunch of them, especially
if you count the Wolverine films. So we'll just
start with our general thoughts and impressions,
and I guess Chuck Mabel, we'll start with you.
There's been a lot of talk about x -men apocalypse
up to this point. I mean a lot of reaction Uh
that that we've seen and I was curious after
you watched it, you know We we were huge fans
of days of future past. You can actually go back
and listen to our episode on that Um, did this
live up to your expectations? You know, where
did this fall for you? Um, I think uh I thought
it was really enjoyable. I had a lot of fun watching
it my I think my main impression was as I was
leaving was i'm thinking Okay, this movie has
a lot of issues to me, but it was still somehow
good. I'm not really sure how it pulled that
off. And by good, I mean kind of like fun and
entertaining to watch. The bad parts of things
that I had issues with didn't really do a whole
lot to turn my opinion negative as it did in
something like Batman vs Superman or something
like that. It was still a very, very fun ride.
even with the problems which we can get into
later because they're a little bit more detailed
but I thought obviously for sure it was a big
step down from Days of Future Past. I think probably
the lowest of the three new X -Men movies I would
put it because I think First Class was a little
bit better as well but I enjoyed a lot of things
about it. I enjoyed the introduction of the new
younger characters and as I kind of figured beforehand,
they had a pretty large role in it, you know,
as far as Cyclops and Jean and Nightcrawler,
stuff like that. And I really had a lot of fun
with that because, I mean, to be honest, we kind
of seen plenty of Mystique and Beast in the last
couple of movies. It's nice to see some new faces
in there and sort of follow them around on an
adventure a little bit. So that was pretty cool
to see. I actually thought Sophie Turner. did
a great job as as Jean Grey. I really liked her,
which is weird because I was kind of skeptical
about that at first. I wasn't sure how she was
going to be. But I actually really liked her
and some of the scenes they kind of showed between
her and Scott were interesting. And I loved how
they kind of gave Cyclops a little bit of an
attitude, like you sort of got even though he's
a young man, he's still kind of got that. little
bit of an alpha male personality that, you know,
you would expect him to have because he's such
a great leader and stuff. So there's a lot, a
lot of upside. One of the big downfalls was I
think it was a little bit too, I guess, grandiose
or flamboyant or, you know, over the top, whatever
term you want to use. But I mean, the special
effects cost must have been through the roof
on this. But I thought some of the things were
a little bit far fetched, even for an X -Men
movie. Little bit a little bit too over the top,
but like I said overall I really I really did
have a lot of fun watching it So all righty Greg
your thoughts. What do you what did you think
of you around? So for Chuck he enjoyed it, but
was not nearly to the level of days the future
past and first class. What about you? What are
you? I'm kind of on the same level here thought
it was a bit long and they could have cut some
cut it down a little bit because it was just
getting too laborious especially up front it
felt like a lot of origins for everybody and
a lot of setting up which is understandable there
there was a lot that the average moviegoer might
not get if it wasn't that if it was uh left out
uh so it's understandable but it just kind of
took it down a little bit i enjoy enjoyment of
it definitely the best part of this movie like
the last was definitely Quicksilver for me. Definitely
great and added a little bit of levity kind of
in the middle of the movie where you were kind
of gonna need it. I thought all of the new actors
and actresses that they brought in did a great
job. Like Chuck said, I thought Sophie Turner
was great. I didn't have any reservations about
it. I've seen her in Game of Thrones. She does
a great job. And I think she looks great as Jean
Grey. Everybody else did a really great job along
those lines. So it was just kind of an average
for me It was it was still a very very good I
thought but it was just kind of average and I
think the the last two x -men movies Definitely
were better than this one Yeah, I mean I'm around
the same line as you guys I might be even a little
bit lower in the sense like it feels like one
movie too many in a way where It suffers from
a lot of the major problems you usually have
with sequels and a lot of the major problems
you usually have with prequels. It's like the
middle child of this franchise where it's like
a lot of the first class characters have gotten
to the point where there's almost not much more
room for them to develop. unless you basically
get them to the point that they're in when it
comes to the later X -Men films. Like, for example,
Magneto, I like his story in this a lot. I think
some of his moments are the best moments in the
film. But it also feels very familiar. For a
film familiar, it's, you know, he has a tragic
accident happens that takes away his humanity
and he has to then, you know, goes on this rampage
to try to then restore it again. And Mystique,
again, it feels like her story from last film
is still continuing. in the same way where it
left, didn't really go anywhere from the last
movie. She's trying to figure out who she is
as a character and I don't know, I just... I
know Jennifer Lawrence is a big star, but I just
feel like the character of Mystique just there's
not as much there as they're making it there
out to be. Like I kind of get the idea of making
her this like symbol for that of the mutant cause.
But I don't know how effective it is or how much
they really. Yeah, I think they got too preachy
with that and over the top with calling her hero,
because I really don't remember as being that
much of a hero or an inspiration in the last
movie. So it was kind of weird to me. I mean,
and it's even weirder, too, because They're like,
singer's talking about he wants to do a Mystique
solo movie. And I'm like, why? I don't, I'm not
sure that would work. Like, I don't know. Yeah.
So, and I know you guys were fans of the new
actors and I think I like a lot of those people
like Ty Serden and I have enjoyed a lot. He was
great in Mud and Tree of Life and Joe. I don't
know for some reason he didn't completely work
for me as Scott Summers. Some of the scenes he
did and I don't know if it was him or someone
just the dialogue. It just didn't click all the
way. Sophie Turner as Jean Grey, I thought was
better, but there are some moments, like, there's
some, again, I don't know if it's a dialogue
issue, like, there's just some conversations
that you have where, I don't know, I didn't quite
get the Jean Grey that I was looking for, but
again, it's different because these are still
kids, so it's something we haven't really seen
before. I did really like Cody Smith, as Nightcrawler,
I thought, he impressed me, I'm really excited
to see what they do with that character. But
I am a fan of the apocalypse character or the
villain. I enjoy him in the comics and to be
fair they did they got overall like what apocalypse
is like in the comics they pretty fair representation
but it's in a way I think he is a villain that
maybe works better in comics than he does on
a big screen because it's just I don't know like
his entire mantra his entire plot and Game plan
or whatever you want have it was just kind of
dull like, you know, this the idea of destroying
the world He is very much survival of the fittest
you destroy the world and those that survive
deserve to survive and I'll rule the ashes of
it. I think that And almost one wish they went
down to more of an age of apocalypse storyline
where it is this alternate universe that's been
like ravaged and I don't know to give it something
different of a feel I thought that The 80s putting
it in the 80s was interesting, smart idea, but
I just thought at times some of the eighties
-ness was a little bit too much, like they were
picking up too many pop culture references from
the eighties, I made it a little bit, you know,
you have Ms. Pac -Man, Knight Rider in the background,
some of the... Just the designs of the clothing
were just a little bit like like too stereotypical
of 80 especially when it came to Jean Grey like
I don't think she had a moment where she wasn't
wearing gigantic shoulder pads it was just like
again a little bit of a nitpick, but But still
though. I there is a lot of what I love about
the X -Men franchise here. I always think the
X -Men franchise is Successful based upon the
relationships between the characters and and
it's more always been more about this team than
really individuals And I think it succeeds on
that end. I mean I like I said, I love the Magneto
storyline I enjoy these characters interacting
even though besides some some issues with the
individuals of the new X -Men I thought I saw
seeing them come together as a team was enjoyable
and by the end I was I was really invested into
the final climax and I did enjoy it and so I
like Again, I see some problems with it. It's
a little bit Chaotic maybe over overly bloated
it suffers from some of the like some some of
the new characters are kind of wasted like Psylocke
is kind of pointless and There's maybe other
places they can go, but I think there's still
a lot to enjoy within it. I overall walked away
happy. I was hesitant even going in because it
just, even like going in, I felt like it was
just maybe one movie too many and maybe they
just need to, I don't know what they're gonna
go with next, if it's gonna be in the 90s and
maybe they'll get away from. Yeah, it will be
in the 90s. Yeah. So that, I'm still excited
to see more of it, but I just think at this point,
maybe they need to. Move away from kind of repeating
the same storylines or get away from the mystique
character and that in that conflict because I
just I can't get invested in it like I was with
these a future past and in first class, so I'd
say I actually like this kind of uh got me in
a little bit of an x -men kick after I saw it
and I think it was uh, I was the next day or
a couple days later, whatever it was actually
got the urge to watch Days of Future Past again.
So I threw that in and I was like, I could not
believe how much I loved that movie like more
than I even remember loving it. Like I'm watching
it. It was kind of like the first time seeing
it again. I'm like, holy, like this shit is awesome.
Like, you know, everything about Days of Future
Past I really loved. And it kind of made me realize
how much more I enjoyed that than Apocalypse.
But there was still some enjoyment there. But
I think like Days of Future Past was just better
written and, you know, there's a lot more substance
there, I guess you would say, something like
that. Yeah. I thought there was just nothing
new, like nothing like that. Yeah. Like, OK,
this is the watershed moment for this movie.
You guys, Greg, you mentioned the Quicksilver
scene. Again, I thought it was great. It was
a lot of fun. Just you know, it's equally to
that maybe of the previous movie But they didn't
that's just something they've done before and
I guess I didn't see anything in this that was
like Oh, wow, this is they're taking this idea
to a new level. That's I always feel like every
X -Men movie from like, you know X -Men 2 the
White House Nightcrawlers attack in the White
House even like X -Men 3 is some decent action
sequences that hold up First -class has a lot
of stuff that I love that that stands out like
these are the coin in that I thought was great
In this there wasn't there wasn't that thing
that I felt like okay This is the linchpin of
the film that makes it like this is gonna be
what I remember when I walk out of the movie
Yeah, and even like I was thinking too back at
like some really emotional interactions between
The characters and some of the other movies like
in the first one you have some some memorable
interactions and conversations between Xavier
Magneto in days of future past you have their
interaction on the plane, uh, on the private
jet when they were speaking and everything. Um,
and then also in days of future past, the one
that really stuck out to me was like the conversation
between the future Xavier and the past Xavier.
And it's, it's just one of those like inspirational
kind of speeches or conversations that sort of
defines what the whole movie is all about. And
it really gives it that emotional weight behind
it and Is really like the inner strength of the
X -Men. I didn't really get any moment like that
from this like there was nothing that You could
look at it and say like yeah, that's what the
X -Men are all about, you know, like Conversation
where he's telling his old self. We need you
to hope again and stuff like that I thought that
was a great thing that was kind of missing from
this Yeah, there's there's one thing I think
that comes close to me I get it into when I get
into spoilers, but I was I was kind of curious
what you guys thought of the use of apocalypse
in this it's probably one of x -men's besides
magneto most infamous villains it's probably
the first time they've actually had a villain
besides maybe dark phoenix if you want to call
her that of the villain where that you know you're
getting a classic x -men hugely powerful villain
what did you think of you know oscar isaac's
portrayal you know portrayal of him and the use
of him as a character yeah i thought oscar isaac
did a great job with it i still think he should
have been a little bit bulkier if i want to go
uh the physicality of it i'm not sure if he was
really that intimidating uh i believe chuck said
which i agree with after the the film that wishy
had that like the menacing kind of altered voice
throughout instead of just at key moments when
he needed it. I thought the use of his powers
was kind of interesting because those are all
over the place. Even in the comics, you don't
really exactly know what his capabilities are.
I think for his philosophy, I think they kept
pretty darn close to it. So overall, I was happy
with it. There's just a couple of things here
and there that I wish were a little bit better
done. Sometimes to fit into the story, some sacrifices
have to be made. Yeah, I guess so. I guess they
were not they were not strong enough to make
it through, I guess. Chuck, what did you think?
I did enjoy Apocalypse overall. I think I did
have a problem with sort of his range of powers,
I guess. And I know, like in the comics, they're
kind of all over the place as well. But this
seemed like to a whole other extreme like. they
were just doing crazy things that were like pretty
you'd have to make a pretty far leap in logic
or you'd have to have a pretty vivid imagination
to think some of these things like it's like
most of the mutant powers are somewhat explainable
um his just seemed like just kind of ridiculous
like he's He's touching a TV and he's learning
all of human history through a TV. I'm like,
how is that possible? You have a history channel.
That's right. Like even if you could do that,
like you couldn't learn all of human history
through one, one wave. And even like, there was
only a couple of networks back then anyway. So
like, I don't know what they were thinking there,
that stuff. And just being able to move everything
with his mind, like, you know, telekinesis extremely
advanced level of teleponiesis it was pretty
crazy just to see like all these things flying
around all over the place and it was just it
kind of gave me the impression I'm like all right
well why can't you just say I win and like just
make it so like it was getting so ridiculous
it's like why can't you just will something to
happen and make it so because his powers were
getting so ridiculous I'm like why do you even
need your horsemen when you can just do whatever
you want So I thought they could have toned down
his powers a little bit, you know, made him a
little bit more vulnerable in some spots to where
he actually would need his horsemen a little
bit more. So that kind of irked me a little bit,
but I mean, I think Oscar Isaac did pretty good.
Some of the, some of the dialogue was a little
bit odd. Um, it was, it was interesting. I won't
ruin too much, but there was a moment where he
kept saying no more this and no more that. I
was like, this is so reminiscent of House of
M when Scarlet Witch says no more mutants. He
just kept saying no more. He said it like five
times. It was kind of funny, but overall I liked
him. Like Greg said, I mentioned him. I wish
they did the funky altered voice with the delay.
Wish he had it and every line, but they only
had it on a few choice lines, which was kind
of interesting but So yeah, that was my overall
thought to him. I guess yeah, I agree with the
like his his parish were so We're very problematic
in the sense of it's like if you can just basically
control matter to that extent How was anyone
ever gonna like even like face you in any way
like you can basically just? put someone into
a wall and change their molecular structure and
like everything. You basically destroy a town
just by your wham. Like, yeah, it just seems
so inconsistent that it was like, okay, where,
what is this, how are they gonna stop him? Like,
how is this even worse, his vulnerability? I
was actually kind of surprised that like, He
obviously has, you know, the exosuit that the
comics do, that he technically is like a celestial
suit, and they don't really go into that explanation.
I guess they just explain that, like, he does
these retractions and gets all these powers,
but never really into, like, how they're even
capable of doing that. And, you know, I guess
we're supposed to be like, well, they were, you
know, the Egyptians at that time. They had the
capability of... This advanced technology that
we wouldn't even have today or if we're supposed
to be more magical or or what have you I mean,
I don't necessarily need an explanation. I could
see what was happening, but Just I could see
some people being lost of like why is this guy
who was you know born thousands of years ago?
Having you know, basically this technology that
doesn't even exist today. Um, like it's almost
like a stargate type of thing. Um, yeah Yeah,
so uh I thought our Oscar Isaac did as best as
he could considering like the prosthetics he
was in I actually did like the look of apocalypse
overall I thought it looked enough like the comics
without the and I didn't mind the fact that they
didn't do the voice all the time I could understand
why they would only do it when they felt it was
necessary because it could be difficult to have
a conversation between people with that type
of delay maybe maybe they tried it and didn't
work or but it I don't know he was fine, but
like There's just it's problematic when you get
it with villain that powerful It's almost to
the point where they're not that interesting
anymore. It's like where Where's the dynamic
between him? Like when you have like magneto
who's probably one of the best comic book villains
ever if not the best And compared to him, it's
just it's you know apocalypse is I don't know,
like it's - Yeah, his only goal is destruction,
so it's like, okay, why is - that's not even
interesting. Yeah, he's more of a force of nature,
more of like a natural disaster than he is a
full -fledged character, so. Right, it's like
the X -Men fighting a tornado or something. Exactly,
exactly. Speaking of which, I did really like
the girl that played Storm. Like, I've seen her
in interviews and she, like, she's nothing -
she's got a really bubbly personality, but in
Storm - Did you see her on Good Morning America?
No, I did not. My god, it was hilarious. I was
telling Chuck about it. They had her introduced
the weather which okay. Yeah the Morning goes
with that. Yeah, and so They they kind of have
her introduced the weather and then she kind
of tosses out her hands like she does in the
movie and Electricity comes out so they had a
little special effect in front of her there.
So I was like, oh, that's cool. At least they're
trying but then she took her hands away and Somebody
was a little slow on the switch And they didn't
take them away. And where she had her hands placed
when she took them away, it looked like the electricity
was coming out of her boobs. It was freaking
hilarious. Nice. Maybe it was. Maybe it was.
You never know. But yeah, that was interesting.
And so I think they did as best as they maybe
could have. I don't know. It just seemed like
like the main issue with Apocalypse was just
that just, I don't know, his plan wasn't all
that. Interesting, I guess I don't know. Okay
considering like we had what Kevin Bacon as in
the first X -Men first class Yeah, yeah, so I
thought he was even better than like I like Oscar
Isaac as an actor a lot But I don't think any
issues with apocalypse had anything to do with
him But anything else you guys want to talk about
before we get into the nanny gritty specifics
also known as Sebastian Shaw You know, it's not
like he was as bad as Emma Frost, you know with
a January Jones. She was just god -awful. I Think
I just wanted to say like I'm probably gonna
bring up a lot of negative points To it like
in the next segment, but like I mentioned that
I still like enjoyed the movie a lot I thought
it was a fun ride. But for some reason it's When
I was going through this it was very easy for
me to kind of pick out things I had problems
with and kind of write them down on a list like
I have like a bunch of them so it's gonna sound
like I hated the movie but I really didn't I
swear. Were there any general positive notes
that we you know we want to bring up before we
get to specifics? Quick silver scene still cool
I think they maybe have upgraded a little bit
with how much he kind of had to do in that scene
and how much she had as a role overall but nothing
really else kind of really stood out where I
was like oh that's amazing yay I really liked
all the parts with the new students for the most
part like I felt that was it was for me at least
my attention was a lot more on them than it was
like what apocalypse was doing because you know
they're gonna stop and end so it's like you know
they're gonna find a way to do something and
I was more interested in how they're kind of
bringing along the younger characters because
I'm thinking ahead, like I'm thinking for the
next movie that's supposed to take place in the
90s, which was my favorite era of X -Men. So
I'm seeing how are they developing Scott, how
are they developing Gene and Nightcrawler and
Storm and stuff like that. So that really intrigued
me. And then along those same lines, I really
enjoyed seeing, you know, Xavier's school. and
all the students there and sort of seeing his
dream realized, you know, where he has all the
students there and he's starting to teach them
classes and everything like that. And you have,
you know, some of the people, like especially
Beast and stuff like working there as professors
and everything. And, you know, even some little
details like Beast incorporating some technology
into the X -Mansion that is familiar to us from
the original trilogy. With all the original x
-men movies like some of those same things you
saw him like building So I thought that was really
really cool, you know details that they threw
in Or they say what they are, but it was just
like if you keep a close eye You can kind of
see some things like oh, yeah remember that from
like, you know The second movie or the first
movie from the old the original movies also also
something I forgot was Seeing Wolverine in his
throwback creation Adamantium edition. I forget
what the exact name of the costume is but we're
essentially where he's hooked up It's got the
the fanny pack and the visor thing on that. I
thought that was Pretty cool. Oh, yeah, the weapon
X version of Wolverine, which I guess was technically
spoiled in the trailer. So They just showed his
claw popping out, but that was about it. They
didn't really show any of the The the fanny pack
or whatever the techie fanny pack. Yeah, I did
I was actually Happy to see like havoc return
like I thought was an unexpected surprise Yeah
in still seeing the conflict that you see between
Xavier like his desire and and how even beasts
there Hake McCoy is Conflicted because simply,
you know Xavier wants Basically hoping for the
best where you know beast has that lens I go
for the best but prepare for the worst so So
I did like that and a little even though I wish
there was more of it the little interaction you
get between Xavier and Magneto I still think
that has always been the best part of these movies
from the very first one to this and whenever
you get that I still enjoy it even if they're
two different actors, but Um, but yeah, let's
get let's get to some specifics. So there are
some general positive or some positive specifics
I could bring up as well So if you've not watched
x -men apocalypse stop now skip ahead come back
and listen again once you've watched it, but
we're gonna get into Spoiler so you've been warned
no excuses and what I did actually want to take
a few steps back and Chuck you were mentioning
previously like that that speech or the conversations
between characters that really kind of Resonate
you and what the other films and I thought the
closest one that came came to this one was when
you had apocalypse Using Xavier to like speak
to the world and you and you had Xavier kind
of like at the end twist it and Basically not
say what he wanted to like that to me was like
the the closest we've got to that and I did like
that moment and it did I don't know I mean That
was like one of the moments where you wanted
to stand up and cheer because you did see him
kind of stand up to apocalypse when I did not
Honestly see that coming as much as I probably
should have Yeah, and I I did that thought did
enter my mind about that particular scene, but
I wanted to see him say more I felt like it was
a little bit too quick or he just kind of set
it right at the end. Like I would have wanted
to say a little bit more, something a little
bit more inspiring to kind of get people to get
the mutants united and stuff. Because it kind
of like it almost seemed like it kind of petered
out like a little bit because it was, you know,
Gene took it as like. you know, okay, as a secret
message for me, which he obviously did have like
a little embedded message in there for her, but
like nobody alleged what Xavier said to like
stand up and fight. Like they did through their
actions, but nobody really sort of acknowledged
it verbally. Like, like, yeah, we need to stand
up and fight for this. There weren't any shots
of, you know, other mutants around the world.
Like, so I felt like it sort of felt flat the
way they did it. I don't know, maybe a little
bit of tweaking there could have made that probably
a lot more effective, in my opinion. Yeah, it
was a halftime speech that no one really paid
attention to, I guess, even though it was coming
through their minds. Yeah. Interesting. Greg,
you brought up the Wolverine cameo specifically.
I know it was kind of spoiled, but did you guys
see that coming once William Stryker showed up
that, like, okay, this is what's happening? Yeah,
I didn't know that they were gonna go with the
the fanny pack and visor thing and being locked
in the box and the kids fine like I didn't expect
how it happened to happen, but I Knew that the
Wolverine was gonna be brought in somehow and
I was excited for that part of the movie I should
I probably should have known from the trailer
judging by like the background in that shot with
Wolverine's claws like you know seeing the different
the walls and stuff probably should have known
what it was but as soon as like they as soon
as they did this the sweeping pan with the camera
of alkali lake like i knew exactly kind of what
was coming and like i knew that scene from the
trailer was was coming basically and the next
few scenes so i'm like okay they're at alkali
lake you know this is where magneto is this is
where a big part of x -men 2 took place like
the original x -men 2 So he kind of knew where
some things were gonna fall into place there
a little bit which was cool again because they're
tying things back into the original The original
x -men movie, so I thought that was pretty well
incorporated and interwoven I guess yeah, I don't
know I was I guess I was on the other side of
that like I got why they did it and I could understand
it it just felt I don't know almost unnecessary
in a way and just It felt like a random tangent
like okay, William Stryker shows up they go Alcline
Lake and then they If you could kind of remove
that entire portion of it and you're not really
changing much about the movie in a way, so it
Unnecessary cameo or just like they wanted to
throw that in there because you need Wolverine
or something like that. So I I agree with that.
I think the like the actual part where Wolverine
appears like I thought it did feel a bit forced,
to be honest. Like it was exciting to see Alkali
Lake, but I probably would have been happy if
they just left it at that. Yeah. Don't get me
wrong. I was happy to see Wolverine, but it did
feel a bit forced having him come out of the
cage and just goes on a weird rampage and then
runs out the door. Yeah. I was like, wait a minute.
Like, that's kind of and I don't even think it
was. Hugh Jackman's best performance, to be honest,
like. Yeah, it was a little it was a little awkward
for some reason. I can't put my finger on it.
But if you look at the haircut, I don't know.
It could be. But to me, it was like his growling
and like his, you know, it was supposed to be
his his berserker age. But if you want to look
at his best berserker age, like look at the the
mansion scene from X two when they. When the
soldiers invade the X mansion, you know the famous
thing where he says you picked the wrong house,
bub When he goes in the berserker age then that
was like one of his best performances as Wolverine
this just felt like awkward somehow I can't really
put my finger on it, but it was just it felt
forced like it was weird Even even the action
of it in it didn't seem to like it was clumsily
handled I guess I don't know it felt not something
they thought out all that well Yeah, and I read
something interesting about Brian Singer's methods,
which I never really noticed, but I guess it's
kind of true now that I think about it. It's
like he likes bloodshed, but he doesn't really
like showing it. Yeah, that's true. Maybe he's
kind of restricted with the reading or whatnot,
but it's kind of like, he's, he's showing you
this really intense scene, but then it's looking
away at the last possible second. And you're
not really seeing, you're not really seeing it
fully develop, I guess. Yeah, true. I see. I
was knowing that Wolverine was going to be in
this. I was trying to figure it out. Okay. And
I assumed it was going to be in strikers compound,
but once they left the mansion and were like
going to the mall i was thinking that they were
that's where it was going to happen like i was
i don't know maybe i was thinking the first episode
of the x -men or something like that where they're
going to get in trouble and they get captured
there and they're going to cartoon the night
of the sentinels yeah yeah and they they're going
to try to tie it into the wolverine where you
had the wolverine saving was scott summers and
a few others and xavier came to try to help him
i thought that's like how they were going to
tie it in obviously that's not not what happened
Yeah, but and also like it just makes things
even confusing considering the X end of x -men
days of future past where you have mystique show
up and like give Worth the wolverine and like
that materialized anything. I guess I just kind
of forgot that that happened or just didn't know
what to do with it Yeah, like they they should
have never Had the the eyes flash yellow. They
should have just left it, you know everyone to
assume that striker did take Wolverine's body
because it just would have made so much more
sense. Yeah One thing I did really like though.
I touched upon it was the kind of the early stages
of the Magneto's story and I was really enjoying
what they were doing with him and Like the scene
where you do see his like his family killed I
thought that was very effective and then just
his method of killing all those guys with just
that I thought I couldn't tell but I thought
it was the coin from first class like it but
I guess I was just a locket, but I just yeah,
it was the it was the locket that When he was
telling the the girl the story of how he was
separated from his parents and he's like Like
you've always got them in your heart and he opened
it up and the two grandparents of the little
kid were in there and that's the locket that
he used. Yeah, it just shows you just how bad
-ass my ego is. It's like all I need is a locket
and I can kill an entire army of people. But
I just thought that was a really effective moving
scene when you just see. Especially its Fassbender
though him screaming to God was maybe a little
much but I thought overall those I Almost wish
we got more more of that because after that like
he almost gets forgotten until the very end Yeah,
that was something I wanted to bring up to like
to me in first class and days of future past
Fassbender was like this huge bright spot in
each of the movies I thought like his performances
were like terrific and Like he made such interesting
you know, villain out of Magneto and kind of
growing into his origin and stuff. But in this
one, like like you mentioned, we have that scene
with his family in Poland, I think it was. And
you have a little bit of him, you know, working
in that foundry sort of. That was weird sort
of seeing Magneto have a job. It's not really
a complaint, but it was just weird seeing like
Magneto has a job. I'm like, that's really weird.
Of course, surrounded by metal. I mean, you know,
he's right. But like after that scene, like you
said, he disappears for the movie. And I thought
like, you know, that's one of the that's one
of the big guns they have in their back pocket.
And it seemed like they just totally took him
out of the equation because for the Entire second
half of the movie. He's just floating in the
air with a bunch of metal particles Swarming
around him and it's just like I felt like the
movie would have been a lot better With more
of his influence in it, you know more dialogue
for him more scenes for him It just seems like
they took him out of it And you know that being
one of their best actors on the set. I felt like
they could have utilized them better Yeah, I
almost wish the They didn't even go with him
as being a horseman like I get kind of why they
did that but I don't know Yeah, it just seemed
like it might have been more interesting to see
him and Xavier working together to stop him,
you know that interesting I'm thinking of like
the x -men evolution cartoon that they they when
they had the apocalypse storyline and what they
did with it and you know that cartoon wasn't
great, but I thought that they handled apocalypse
maybe even better than The 90s series did. It
just, yeah, it just seemed like once he became
a horseman, everything interesting about that
character went away, and he was just, again,
similar. Just this guy who was just restoring
the world, and there wasn't much more there.
I always like the fact that a lot of the major
points with the X -Men characters aren't boiled
down to action sequences. It's often boiled down
to conversations and trying to make people to
make decisions based upon who they are as people.
Like you had with Days of Future Past a little
bit, and you had with Here as they try to, you
know, basically... Appeal to the humanity of
Magneto, but with you don't really get that with
an apocalypse But what do you guys think of since
we're kind of along those lines the final battle
with everything going down, you know if the fighting
of the horsemen the Xavier doing his mental telepathy
against you know apocalypse. What did you guys
think of that sequence? I thought the horsemen
were defeated rather easily to be you know, facing
a group of young kids that are like, you know,
pretty much have zero training whatsoever. They
just showed up at the school like three days
ago. For them to be able to take out the horsemen
like fairly easily was kind of weird. I felt
like they could have been a little bit stronger
and make apocalypse weaker. And I think it would
have balanced out a little bit better. But the
final scene was interesting. I mean, you kind
of knew they had to do something with Phoenix
because it's the only thing would even touch
this guy. Because once you see Magneto turn and
he starts firing all this metal at him and is
disintegrating as soon as it hits his force field,
it's like, OK, come on, like really, you know,
Magneto's thrown everything he has at him and
it can't even touch him. That, I guess, sort
of irked me a little bit that he was that powerful.
And it just seems like sort of a needless way
to bring in Phoenix I don't know for some reason
like it's like you barely know the character
Jean Grey as it is we need to get any background
on her at all and then like already you're like
showing her as the Phoenix which is I guess kind
of strange but yeah I wasn't wasn't super super
happy with the last scene but I thought it was
good enough that it worked okay Yeah with Chuck
I agree that the the horsemen were a little Underrated
there or they I think they should have been a
lot more powerful and then I thought It was interesting
that they at least had to bring so much Against
apocalypse and they had to do it on two fronts
which the two fronts kind of cutting back and
forth between i thought was interesting uh i
do think they did have apocalypse a little overpowered
uh now that i heard all you guys talking about
that but yeah it was it was uh okay I guess.
One thing that was cool, I'm sure you agree Greg,
is the little mini sequence they did with Quicksilver
hitting Apocalypse, like kept punching him. Oh
yeah, that was definitely the best part of that
scene. That was super cool. Except for the costume.
I think they nailed a good personality with it
It's definitely a different personality than
in the comics But I think I think the personality
that they went with goes great the character
and I think they they treat the his powers the
best out of Excuse me anybody in this movie really
yeah, and that was like his power set was the
one that I was sort of wondering as you approach
the climax of the movie, I'm like, okay, but
how would Apocalypse do against Quicksilver?
Because he moves faster than anybody could even
think. So I'm like, maybe he's kind of the key
to defeating this guy. And when he started attacking
him, he started punching him, just moving faster
than Apocalypse could even react. I was like,
oh man, maybe this is it, maybe this is the way
they sort of beat - him somehow by using Quicksilver's
power and then it like it kind of You know went
the other way on it was somehow, you know, he
magically his eyes roll over white and he just
thinks up something uses the ground I did like
that sequence. I actually I don't know. I know
the finale has some problems with it, but I overall
really enjoyed that sequence just in the way
it all kind of came together where you have you
know basically this team from Magneto to Beast
like they're all fighting this finally like stop
apocalypse And then it's I thought like it was
built up really well to where you do see You
know Xavier gets that line about you know I'm
not alone and then feet and then Phoenix comes
out like a rock star and like basically destroys
them Yeah, that might lead to some problems I
guess but it does it's basically your gigantic
power beats this other gigantic power That's
not really well defined, but it's harder and
harder. I think once you get more more powerful
characters To define it, but I don't know I was
I was excited and and that kind of got got me
to overall Walk out with a more positive feeling
the negative feeling I do agree like the horsemen
did seem to I mean I didn't have an issue the
way they killed angel because I thought like
it kind of makes sense though When you think
about don't try not to think about the timeline
with the X -Men franchise because it just hurts
your brain I thought Psylocke was relatively
pointless this entire movie, you know, you have
Olivia Munn who's not again like a huge actress
or anything maybe but it just seems like she
There was nothing to her character. She was in
a couple scenes Maybe kicked a few people and
that was about it and then she just kind of walks
it walks way angrily So I don't know what that's
supposed to mean So I was I was really disappointed
with how they used her or really didn't use her
at all. I I thought I thought Angel was equally
as pointless in this, to be honest. Agreed. Yeah.
I really don't understand why Apocalypse would
even choose him. Also agrees. Or why he was even
in the movie. Like, it didn't seem like they...
I don't even know if he had one line. Did he
even say one line? He had a couple. I think he
did. Yeah, he had a couple, especially in the
fight at the beginning. Like, come on, fight
me. You got to fight, make it good, or whatever.
But he was kind of even more invisible than Psylocke,
I thought. Like, I don't know. That was kind
of confusing to me why. I guess they didn't do
a good job of explaining why Apocalypse chose
some of his horsemen. Like, you know, I could
understand Storm because she's like the first
one he came in contact with. That makes a lot
of sense. You know, and he kind of. Almost takes
her like a surrogate daughter. Yes. She's the
first person that he meets and and she is really
powerful Yeah, and she yeah her power set is
Crap they replaced What's his name? With apocalypse
a very popular villain character. He goes up
against Xavier a lot He was in storms Shadow
King. Thank you Yeah, and like and I mean, I
could understand why he's going after Magneto,
you know, one of the most powerful mutants on
the planet. I would understand why he would want
him, but I don't know why he wanted Psylocke
and Angel, especially since they didn't even
utilize Psylocke's full range of powers. They
didn't use her telepathy at all. They just had
her using her psychic knife sort of thing and
her hand in combat skills so that was kind of
like i don't know it just seemed kind of like
a waste i don't know it's funny considering olivia
munn was supposed to was up for the role to star
in deadpool or co -star in deadpool and she turned
her down for this and i think maybe she could
have made the wrong choice there yeah i think
so yeah the the one had deadpool had a copycat
definitely had a better development the character
but olivia munn did look really great as silak
i think she she looks the part yeah I just wish
they would have like given her more to work with,
you know? Yeah, maybe hopefully in the next movie
that she'll come back and she'll have more to
do but yeah, unless she just was there and and
I also didn't Understand fully why all these
people were falling apocalypse like I think the
one of the best things about apocalypse and you
saw this and I have to keep referring to the
cartoon but why people would go to him and often
it was It was like he would trick them in a sense
of I remember at least and I don't know if this
was and the same thing in the in the comic but
you know angel goes to what he thinks is secure
himself but ends up being turned into archangel
and basically brainwashed and that was a thing
he would always brainwash people and I don't
necessarily know if that's what he did here like
maybe I got the sense that maybe was storm but
with the other ones it almost seems like they
just kind of joined him willingly and yeah I
didn't really get why like they would do that
because it's like Okay, I get magneto because
he's angry and everything but the other ones
it just seems like you're just okay with the
fact that you're just gonna have an entire plan
to the bash and not much more that seems a little
bit like I know like what would make you Think
like yeah, let's go with this guy. He's gonna
destroy the world. But you know, we'll be on
his side I Mean I get them trying to make angel
into a badass in the beginning by making him
apparently he killed the blob or beat up the
blob before yeah yeah which was a nice little
thing they showed but uh i i guess it's just
you're never gonna make paint angel seem like
a badass even if you give him a jerry curl and
uh and a leather jacket it still has to do with
wanks just let your soul glow yeah let your soul
glow good movie reference jack uh what so i know
we're skipping around here but what about we
talked about you know What's the common did you
guys stay for the final seat sequence the end
scene? What do you guys think of that? I once
again love people's Commentary on things that
they know nothing about I forget what the girl
was saying it was she was totally messing with
Nathaniel Essex Background and origins and stuff.
It was very strange. I forget what she said,
but I'm excited to see mr. Sinister I'm not sure
if they're gonna go with the name mr. Sinister
because it always sounded pretty hokey, but It's
like I think he might be a bad guy Yeah, I thought
I thought it was a lot more fun listening to
people try to explain what was happening than
the actual scene was Because like as soon as
you saw the thing that said Essex we we know
mr. Sinister because his name is Nathaniel Essex
but like this this one girl we were walking out
and she's telling people something about this
guy owns this business and his name is Essex
and she's like going on about stuff. And it was
just like way, I'm like, you're missing the point.
It's Mr. Sinister. That's all the point is. That's
all you have to realize. And then he also took,
I believe it was a vial of Wolverine's blood,
I believe, Logan's blood, which I think is kind
of interesting because I'm wondering if they're
going to be doing some cloning of Wolverine and
then we're going to have X -23 and then that
kind of replace Is Hugh Jackman because I think
he's only got like one or two movies left in
this contractor He said Wolverine 3 is gonna
be the last time he does Wolverine. So yeah Question
I had that to me is sort of like the elephant
in the room that nobody's acknowledging. It's
like they're they're coming back to They're they're
leading their path back to the point where the
first x -men movie was sort of In a way because
I mean something's got erased from Days of Future
Best, but so it's like they're coming in all
these new characters What is what are they gonna
do for Wolverine? Cuz Hugh Jackman is not gonna
be there. Are they just not gonna have a Wolverine?
Are they gonna have x23? Like Greg said, I don't
know how that works like it's you can't really
bring in a new Wolverine because you've you've
had him now in the original and The newer ones
with with the younger cast so it's you can't
really bring in another actor to play him So
it's it's kind of interesting. I don't know how
they're gonna do that. I Unfortunately, it's
gonna be a big loss to not have him in the X
-Men movies, but I guess there's there's not
much you can do about it Yeah, I heard Bryan
Singer some were talking about that's where they
made me want to go is have X -23 I mean does
become an issue of like how do you figure that
out considering? like again if you think about
these timelines it makes no sense because if
the next one's in the 90s and they're using the
same actors they're saying that like you know
those actors aged a lot in 10 years because if
it's 1990 and they're the same people from this
movie and they really well that was about 2000
so they still have kind of almost 20 years to
work with but yeah i'm saying if they're using
these same actors again for the next 90s movie
well yeah but that's the issue too like these
even from, you know, between First Class and
Days of Future Past and then between Days of
Future Past and this one, they're not aging at
all. Like the one guy actually did the math out
in the one article I was reading and he said
like, you know, Xavier and Magneto would be like
in their 50s right now, yet they still look like
they're like 32. Yeah, so like I don't you know,
they're not making them look any older or act
any older They're still kind of like young men
and it's it's not really making a lot of sense
Maybe maybe that's just like, you know, they
just got good hygiene, you know They do they
do have they do have McAvoy going bald and to
be fair Patrick Stewart look looks the same as
he did In the 90s as he as now as he did in the
90s. So maybe that's their their excuse But uh,
yeah, um michael fastbender looks nothing like
ian. Uh, uh, god, what is his name? mckellan
ian mckellan. Yeah, but you know, it's I guess
the power of fastbender maybe He's he gets a
really bad five six years, which makes him, you
know age a lot maybe Yeah That's even the problem
with the comics though considering it's like
if he was a holocaust, you know survivor at one
point It's you know, how is that possible? Cuz
he's gonna be like a hundred and thirty years
old He's got the white hair though at least so
that at least makes him look old except somehow
he's still Ridiculously ripped even though he's
like 80. Yeah, they've done some things to try
to DH him and they've tried to do it a lot I
mean, I guess but were there any other points
you guys wanted to bring up anything else that
came to mind? probably some little nitpicky stuff,
but how was Apocalypse able to have teleportation?
And he can just take his horsemen wherever in
the world that he wants to go. That was kind
of weird. I just felt like this really uber convenient
thing. It's like, oh, let's go get our last horsemen.
And they just teleport to Auschwitz with... I
guess the idea is that whatever one of the past
people that he was part of had that power, so
he's like, I don't know, trying to mimic in a
way. He can just take all these powers and use
them whenever, I guess. In reality, I thought
that was kind of a cool concept that he draws
on the powers of the people he... transferred
his consciousness into, but I thought it was
just on too extreme of a scale. It's like, well,
okay, if you got that power, then that guy must've
been pretty damn powerful too for you to be able
to do this crap. Like, you know, like why weren't
these people stopping you 5 ,000 years ago? Like,
yeah. Yeah. I think it's just, I don't know,
to be honest, like I, I do think they The minus
a few things, but I feel like they did as probably
best as you could with the apocalypse character
when it came to the movies. I don't know. Yeah,
it just it's a challenge. Like you said, it's
it doesn't translate as well to the movie as
it does in a comic, I guess. You can go, I think,
delve more into the history and you can bring
in the Celestials as part of it. And, you know,
it's right. I think you can get away with they're
trying to, you know, make them trying to fill
in holes where they can't. bring up other things
so it's it's I didn't have an issue with the
teleportation as much because I felt like at
least that was a power that was defined and I
can understand it but some of the other ones
just seem like if you can just make all these
people fall to the into the ground like when
he kills all the people in Magneto's factory
it's like yeah why not just do that all the time
exactly yeah that was pretty ridiculous I had
a question for you guys did you guys find it
interesting at all that we sort of got a um a
Cyclops origin little scene, but we really didn't
get any sort of origin thing for Gene at all.
And at the end of the movie, Gene sort of end
up being the more important character. So I just
thought it was kind of an odd choice that they
gave Cyclops the origin and Gene turned out to
be a little bit more important, but maybe it
was just giving them each a moment in the sun.
I'm not sure. What do you guys thoughts on that?
Yeah, it. That was a bit odd to me. Yeah. Maybe
it's that Scott Summers has a more tragic beginnings
and he becomes your surrogate into this world,
even though we've kind of been here before. And
he has some ties with Alex, though. Again, that
doesn't really make sense if you think about
it too much. But whatever. I'm fine. They're
trying to bring it in line to the comics a little
bit more. And I think and to maybe they were
trying to. Hold in the sense. We kind of already
got an origin with her in the third X -Men film,
although they're Exactly they're trying to act
like that one doesn't they're they're forgetting
but still keeping references to that movie and
Mixing it in like I thought it would have I thought
it would have made the final scene When she defeats
apocalypse a little bit more meaningful if they
had given her a little origin story where they
had like, you know, maybe her parents or something
like something happened when she was a small
child and someone said like there's something
very powerful inside you or something like that
just to sort of bring that out. I think it would
have highlighted that final scene a little bit
more maybe. Yeah, because if you've not told
her that there was something very powerful inside
her when she was Sophie Turner. Yeah, because
if you like you if you didn't see x -men 3 Like
that probably makes no sense whatsoever. You're
like, why is this person? I guess like they've
kind of hint to it where you know, it's that
the one night and she's like everything shaking
because of her but Yeah, but then again if you
see x -men 3 a lot of this doesn't make sense
like angel and stuff like that So it's it's just
this conundrum of like Greg mentioned They're
trying to reference it but then trying not to
at the same time So I do agree, but if they built
that up or at least established it more it would
have made that finale even more effective How
about like Looking ahead. Are you guys looking?
forward to any characters in particular that
they might include the next movie. Like introducing
new ones. Sinister in X -23. Okay. Oh, man. Jubilee.
Any more Jubilee in my life? Apparently she was
supposed to be in this one, but they cut out
her part, which I could see, because it would
maybe be challenging to have her in this movie.
So she had an identical role to what she did
in X -2. She was shown in a couple of classroom
scenes carrying her books. Exactly, exactly though.
She she uh, I guess was more prominently dressed
like Jubilee. Um, I don't know what more maybe
I I wonder because they're talking about the
gambit movie would they somehow incorporate gambit?
Maybe I don't know I x -23 in sinister would
be great. I I still kind of wonder if they're
gonna do cable, but I guess they would do that
when the Deadpool movie More so than this. So
I guess that Has me questioning. I don't know
that I can't think of any other characters that
would be Interested in seeing maybe if they may
well maybe if they're bringing sinister in the
savage land I would maybe like to see them incorporate
that I think that can be kind of cool and having
that's been finding dinosaurs because that's
always fun. So yes, so run. Yeah I don't know
if you had any Greg or Chuck I think I'm looking
to sort of try to round out the team a little
more so like I I would love to see them bring
rogue in I'd like to see him bring Iceman in
would you want him to bring the same people the
same actors back or I? Don't think necessarily
the same actors because you're you know you're
starting over with Scott and Jean and storm and
Nate crawler So I think you'd bring the new versions
of those as well, but it also love love love
to see a version of Colossus in the next one
because I think that would be a great tie -in
point to the Deadpool movie. You know, make sort
of make him look the same way he did in the Deadpool
movie only like younger somehow. You know or
maybe a little bit smaller or something to make
it emphasize that he was a lot younger or something
So I would absolutely love to have him in and
as you guys know class is one of my favorites
anyway And have a minute and not getting his
butt kicked is what you're saying, right? I haven't
kicked some serious ass like just have him like
just owning people. I think that would be really
cool to have him in there and then I think like
Eventually, like you mentioned about cable I'm
thinking, you know I'm thinking they're planning
like a few more movies. So if they're going to
do this next one, the nineties, and then they
catch up with another one in the two thousands
to me, I'm thinking they're going to try to sort
of tie in with cable in the Deadpool little universe
there. So maybe they do some sort of storyline
with Scott and Jean. Maybe they just kind of
tie that a little bit, say, you know, Proved
that cable is their son from the future or something
like that without getting too crazy with the
whole, you know That was so ridiculous But you
know, maybe find a way to simplify it and really
kind of boil it down so that it's effective.
That would be pretty cool Yeah, would you guys
want to see brian singer continue? Or do you
think at this point the fact that he's made what
one two? Four x -men movies that maybe it's time
to bring in a new director I think five he's
done, right? X -Men 1, X -Men 2, Days of Future
Past, and now X -Men Apocalypse. Oh, he didn't
do First Class? No, that was Matthew Vaughn.
Oh, okay. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I don't know why
I was thinking he did that. I guess, uh, well,
I guess with learning that, I guess I wouldn't
be too afraid of somebody else taking over, but
like previously, I was kind of scared because
the only time someone else took over, it was
Brett Ratner, and he absolutely butchered. Yeah,
X -Men 3 so I was a little scared about anybody
else taking over but I think if it's someone
that's like a big fan of the X -Men and really
understands what they're about at their core,
I think they would do a good job. So Yeah, Greg,
I don't know. Nobody really comes to mind. I
mean, you know directors than I do but Zack Snyder.
No, so Oh God Yeah, I don't know who I can't
nothing really comes to my mind But uh, I mean
I want to be against him coming back in like
I'd still I know there's like since x -men apocalypse
has not been successful as successful and it's
been You know, maybe more average than than people
would like that now this I've seen a lot of people
online basically saying the extra movies have
never been good Which I think is kind of garbage.
I think minus x -men 3 they've all been relatively
solid. But uh But yeah, so I mean I wouldn't
mind it a new person coming in but again I I
wouldn't be against them just kind of revamping
us and starting over with the next one it gets
in the 90s They kind of are but like I you know
again, they don't need to bring a mistake in
I think if Jennifer Lawrence ever does it another
extra movie would be completely okay with that
so But Chuck should mention the one part at the
beginning where she first shows up Should mention
it. Yeah, you should mention it Well, they do
that when they do the sweep from the ground up
and she's in that dress with the yes I made a
very very loud utterance Oh, yeah Greg was a
little you know sort of thinking out loud in
that scene He kind of made like this noise and
then he was like, oh crap. That was really loud
Think I cursed a little bit in there. I think
there was a shitter I guess I finished up you
guys maybe want to we did it with days of future
past because I went back to listen to me We could
do it now if you were going to rank the X -Men
films, what would your ranking be? Damn it. I
knew he was gonna do this. Yeah, I can I can
start if you would like I can give you my ranking
so I could go backwards Yeah, I mean I guess
I wonder backwards so for me I would I would
rank I still think it's my first class is the
best and then it gets kind of Complicated after
that. I'm these are future past next to a very
close to one another for me But I think ultimately
I would go these future past x -men to x -men
the first one X -Men Apocalypse and X -Men X
-Men 3. And if I was throwing the Wolverine movies
in there, I would probably put Wolverine ahead
of X -Men, the second one, the Wolverine, and
then the Wolverine Origins as the worst out of
them all. So I don't know, Chuck, if anything,
if you have an order in mind. Definitely, for
me, days of future past as far and above all
of them. I thoroughly enjoyed that. Everything
about it. Not just because I love sentinels,
but... Did you like the little homage to sentinels
at the end of this one? I loved it in the danger
room scene. That was awesome. That was another
thing I really enjoyed about it. Just that little
thing thrown in there. you know, having the danger
room and then acknowledging the sentinels. I'm
like, oh, please have more sentinels in the next
movie. It'd be so awesome. And they I like to
have like all their little costumes that a little
more color to them. So I don't know if that was
a sign of things to come. So I know people are
talking about that. Yeah, they did. Yeah. So
I would definitely I mean, to be honest, like
of all comic book movies, Days of Future Past
is probably up there in my top three or four.
Absolutely, love it like along with like Civil
War and Avengers and stuff like that. So that
one I would have first I think second I think
I'd have to put x2 Second, I really did enjoy
that one. I enjoyed that Version of Nightcrawler
and I thought they did a lot of cool things in
that movie with striker and that whole story
So, let's see third one. I'd have to go first
class next And then probably the original...
Nah, I'd go Apocalypse 4th. Then the first X
-Men movie and then X -3, the last stand, would
be last. Like you said, the Wolverine ones, I
would definitely have... X1 Origins Wolverine
at the bottom of the pile. That one's terrible.
There's so many bad things wrong with that, but
it's very close with X3. I had a lot of issues
with that too, but the Wolverine I thought was
very good, but I still think I would put that
below Apocalypse. I enjoyed Apocalypse a little
bit more than that. Greg, what about you? To
make it confusing for everyone I'm gonna go in
reverse order last is definitely x3 then I'm
going to go with Wolverine origins if we're adding
Wolverine movies in there then Probably x2 I'm
gonna go with this movie X -Men apocalypse Then
I'm gonna go with The Wolverine, I'm trying to
remember all the movies I'm missing here now.
You're missing X -Men the first one you're missing
Days of Future Past and First Class. Okay, then
I'll go X -Men the first one, Past, and then
I'll go First Class. Is my top one. There you
go. We'd like to hear what you thought of us.
