About this Episode

TFG1Mike and Alison "Sky" Richards dive deep into the Marvel Assembled behind-the-scenes special for the Hawkeye Disney+ series. They discuss the production design that transformed Atlanta into New York, the surprising return of Vincent D'Onofrio as Kingpin, and the chemistry between Jeremy Renner and Haley Steinfeld on set. The episode covers deleted scenes, the creation of Rogers the Musical, stunt work including the innovative 360-degree camera rig, and how the series adapts the acclaimed Matt Fraction comic run.

I retire for, what, like five minutes and it

all goes to shit. Clint is sort of always trying

to retire. I don't think you can ever retire

as a superhero. I think you just either live

or you die. It's one of those two things. But

he's just in New York with his family. He's not

thinking about anything else aside, you know,

getting back home. He actually is in New York

for a very specific reason. And that's because

he's been invited to Rogers the musical. And

all of the Avengers got invited, but no one showed

up except for Clint. Hey, this is Josh Keaton,

and you are listening to the Geekcast Radio Network.

Hello and welcome to The Pullback. It is the

middle slash end of February by the time you

find folks are hearing this. This is episode

472. I am of course TFG and Mike. And joining

me as sort of always is AllySkyRichards. Hello.

Hello. We're here because apparently we want

to be Hawkeyes. Oh, yeah, totally. I got a bow

for Christmas. See, what did I tell you, Bethany?

Everything comes wrapped in a bow. That's for

her roommate folks. Well, technically the bow

came for my birthday because it wouldn't arrive

for Christmas. So we are here, and apparently

we have an audience, a live audience. I was not

expecting that, but yay. And Marvel Assembled

is Disney Pluses and Marvels and whatever. It's

their behind -the -scenes thing. So you can,

basically it's a DVD feature on a streaming service,

essentially is what it is. Normally folks in

the 90s and late, early to mid -2000s, you could

buy DVDs, and if you bought the right ones...

behind -the -scenes bonus features used to be

on like a special second disc or something, but

since we're all about streaming now, why not?

Well, Blu -Rays have them on the same disc. Okay,

that's because Blu -Rays can hold more information,

yes. I'm still stuck in the DVD world sometimes

when I talk about disc format because I never

adopted Blu -Ray. I went from DVD to streaming.

Yeah. I guess I shouldn't tell you then about

how I had to explain to the kids at my school

about when I'm talking about discs or I'm talking

about CDs and not DVDs, not Blu -rays. Yes. Or

vinyl. Boy, I'm sure that broke their brains.

Oh, yeah, I had to explain to them I went all

and I'm like, you know what? I'm just gonna go

all the way to the eight tracks. So you guys

got a good education today? I wasn't around yet,

but oh the memories Yeah by a couple of years,

huh, I just turned 42 this month so Okay, so

year by year. Yeah. Yeah. So how are you? I was

gonna say eight tracks were out when I was born.

I This is completely separate from the superhero

talk that we're supposed to be having folks.

But the way I view certain things. Yes records

and record players and everything else that was

60s 70s into the mid 80s. But by the early 80s

cassettes and then the late mid to late 80s CDs

happened and whatever else. So when someone mentions

8 -Track, I think 70s like, you know, truckers

with their elbows out their windows and I don't

know. Well, my dad was a trucker, that probably,

you know. Gotta burn some rubber, make that highway

in wine. He's a mobile mammal and I bet you a

fiber. He's eatin' hushpuppies and corn on the

cob. He's a semi -aquatic, semi -deriver. A full

-time agent with a part -time job. Oh, boy. Alright,

Marvel Studios, assembled. Behind the scenes

of Hawkeye. This was cool. This was. It was really

cool because... You know, they focused on everybody,

you know, and about not only everybody in the

cast, but like really everybody who was like

a head in the crew as well. And it was just,

I always, you know, being that I've been, you

know, a part of a theater community and being

that I've, I'm a writer, so I know what goes

into story writing and script writing. It's this

is like the one element that I've never been

a part of is being on a movie set. And so I always

find it fascinating seeing how all the different,

you know, how all the different pieces start

plugging in the place. Absolutely. And I know

this is a Disney plus thing. And I understand

that. But Disney got enough money. Marvel got

enough money. Not that I mind them, you know,

having Atlanta double as New York, but I mean,

come on. Come on, Disney, you paid four billion

or whatever it was you paid for Marvel. You could

at least send them to New York full time. And

yes, I understand. I know COVID and all that,

and that's why they couldn't do that. And I,

and I get that, but how they doubled Atlanta

for New York was awesome. Yeah. I mean, That

sector designer. Production team. When they were

talking about how they even mimicked the the

granite. You know and we and we actually just

like watch the shangxi one right before it too.

And so like the level of detail that they put

into their sets. Um, particularly just so that

way the actors can like really immerse themselves

and get the feeling of the location, even when

it's not the actual physical location. Yup. I

think that is, I think that is amazing. The only

thing, and this is just a small, small thing

in all the information they gave us behind the

scenes on Hawkeye. My little gripe here is like

minuscule in comparison to all the info we got.

I wanted to see more info about the Christmas

tree lot scene and how they, that's the one thing

that I kind of missed. But, uh, yeah, no, I,

I'm loving it. I thought it was great. I think

the best reveal was how they did the camera car.

Oh my God. Yes. And then going like 50. Yeah

Yeah, it's like you could probably bet that like

after they actually finally got all their shots

Jeremy and Haley were like no, let's do one more.

Let's do one more. Yeah, I think I got dizzy

like so I Anyone that's listened to our episodes

to this point anyone's listen to any of my podcasts

knows that Whatever i end up discussing on a

podcast if it's a piece of media or whatever

i either end up watching listening reading whatever

multiple times because i usually tend to record

all the audio and even though i don't use all

the audio because you can't do that but it's

one of the things where i'm like i'm recording

all of this i will cut out the clips i want later

whatever so i've seen this this behind this is

specific behind the scenes episode at least four

times. Before you you find folks are listening

to this podcast and i think after the third time

i got so dizzy watching that camera scene with

the car where they're just 360 the camera on

the inside of the car. I like oh i see like ten

jeremy's and seventeen hailey's yikes watch this

about an hour before. I'm getting ready for the

TPA for my teacher's license. I don't have time.

Yes, you don't have time. Whereas I have no life

and nothing else, so I have nothing but time.

Plus, the way that I have to consume it is I

have to plan out. This is a, I want to say, just

under an hour special. I have to plan out that

hour so i can watch it pay attention to it and

retain the information that they're giving me.

Then i watch it and i kinda just put it in the

background while i have audacity recording the

audio for it. And you know i'll do it and then

i'll do a refresher before we record. So you

know that's kinda my process with it all but

it just hits it was so nice to hear what you

said to hear from. everybody involved in this.

And as we're recording this, hopefully by the

time you find folks are listening to it, I will

have actually finished the trade. But I just

got to spoilers. grills is death in I'm like

I swear to God, if this comes back for another

series of episodes, if they kill him in the show,

I'm gonna riot. Oh yeah, Bethany and I were like

so scared as we were getting to the last episode

and Grills was coming back at a big time. I'm

like, don't you dare kill our Grills! Yeah, as

much as we love that you're taking the inspiration

from Fraction Hawkeye, no killing TV Grills,

please. No. Oh man, what else do we want to highlight

for this? I actually loved the background they

gave about Rogers the musical. All right, we're

going to set it for the top again. When I came

on, there was mention of a Rogers the musical

in the script. It was like a little like layer

that was there. And immediately, you know, I

was like, well, why like you have to see the

musical. We're going to mention it. Let's do

the musical. Kevin. absolutely loves the idea

so much that he wanted us to actually create

a whole entire song four and a half minutes of

it so we Got Marc Shaiman to write the song for

us, which is incredible. I cannot believe we

got a chance to work with Marc Shaiman. The first

time I met Kevin Feige was I was at an Academy

Award function the year of Mary Poppins Returns.

And someone came over to me from Disney and said,

Kevin Feige would really like to meet you. Yeah,

that was awesome. I really enjoyed seeing that

and how that evolved. Also, have you seen Spider

-Man No Way Home by Chance? Yes, I have. We don't

condone the way I saw it, folks, but I've seen

it, yes. Again, if you're going to go into any

spoilers, I'm going to warn you now, folks, there

may be spoilers. I'm just going to talk about

one visual that you see as Spider -Man stringing

across New York, and that are some very prominent

Rogers the musical posters. Yeah, I did notice

that I was like, hey Easter eggs that they worked

in You know that in the tree so that way you

could see that the trees decorated the exact

same way that the tree is for in Hawkeye Yeah,

I have so you know I know that in one of our

other episodes, I sat here and I ran down everything

that's supposed to happen in phase four from

Wikipedia. I'm not going to do that again. Go

back to, I think it's either episode five or

six of the Hawkeye series that we discussed,

but I love that Marvel and Disney and Sony have

all kind of come together to include everything.

And specifically with this special, with this

behind the scenes, I I'm probably gonna get it

wrong. So I'll probably end up putting the audio

in here somewhere Where they were like somebody

said I think it was fi he or somebody Oh, you

know, it'd be great if we could get somebody

said it to him and he's like, oh, let me make

a call It'd be great if we could get Vincent.

It would be great if we could do who's when you

think of New York City And then the directors

were like, wait, are you serious? Wait, what?

And he's like, yeah, let me make a call. When

you talk about organized crime in the Marvel

universe and you talk about the CD underbelly

of New York City, there is one primary character

that comes to mind. Kevin threw out the idea

that what if this could be Kingpin? And I think

all of our jaws just kind of dropped in our Zoom

meetings. And I was like, wait, you're joking,

right? This can't be serious. Are you serious?

This is, this is... You're... You really, you

think that there's a chance that we can actually

get Vincent D 'Onofrio, who plays Kingpin in

Daredevil, in this series as a cameo for a couple

of scenes. Like, he is our big boss, and Kevin

made a call to Vincent. He said, I want to bring

you into the MCU, and I'm not gonna say no to

that. Like, that's pretty awesome. The people...

need to be reminded. Oh, man. It's good to be

Kevin Foggy. Yeah, what they're setting up with

this almost it seems like fully aligned everything

now. I am loving it. Loving it. So good. Let's

see. The only other thing that. Because. And

I know this is silly for me to do so, but as

I'm reading through the fraction run through,

through my omnibus and comixology, I was playing

the score from the show. So I would say the only

other. Yeah. I would say the only other thing

that they didn't like they mentioned the music

briefly and obviously they talked about Rogers

the musical and they and then that was great

but I would have loved to have seen Kristoff

back and and and his side of mixing the holiday

stuff with the superhero stuff because as I'm

listening to this TV series score I hear Marvel

themes and then I hear jingle bells and I'm like

wait what what am I listening to? Yeah. It's

always a fun time with these behind the scenes

things. As long as you've seen what they are,

you know, as long as you've seen the content

that they are giving the behind the scenes for.

I haven't watched Shang Chi, Shang Chi, Shang

Chi. I haven't watched that yet. Shang Chi. Yes.

Thank you. I will watch it eventually at some

point when I actually have to pay attention to

more phase four stuff. It's really, really. Really

good. And I love what they did with, you know,

talking about Vincent and how he's talking about

the character and how he plays the character

and... The city belongs to me. I really love

playing this character. I liked creating him,

you know, from the art of guys like David Mack.

We had talked about doing a heavier set version

of Kingpin, but ultimately we wanted to go completely

different in a different direction for this character.

To put him in that Hawaiian shirt was kind of

like a dream come true. We had talks, and she

gets really in -depth about things. I love that,

because I was able to explain how I feel about

the character and what motivates the character.

And Fisk is really driven by emotion. You know,

he's like a child and a monster, both at the

same time. So it got very intense yesterday,

and it got a little bit intense today, too. I

hope that they are going to go into at some point,

somehow, some way more of the Kingpin story,

whether it's in Daredevil, whether it's in Hawkeye,

whether it's in a Hawkeye Daredevil Defenders

team up, whatever it is, because they gave us

such a tease for the first five episodes, up

until Kate shows Clint the picture. Yeah, and

Clint's like, yeah, that's the guy I've been

worried about this whole time Yeah, but up until

then like we knew but we didn't know because

that's the one thing with some of these aligned

things is you don't always want to get your hopes

up because it may not happen and thankfully it

happened in this and yeah, it's like the worst

hidden secret mm -hmm, however watching some

of the The the deleted scenes there were other

ways they were thinking of introducing him Like

yes, there were many other ways. Yeah with Maya

And then there was the sit -down thing with Eleanor

after Derek died So there was a couple of different

ways they were going to originally bring him,

like have his real first scene of him moving.

Mm -hmm. And not just as a picture. Right. I

think what they did was the best choice. Yeah.

I love seeing those other scenes, you're right,

the deleted scenes. But with how the show progressed

after we visually saw him in person on screen

and the events that happened after that, I think

that was the best way that they did it. Yeah.

Talking about incorporating various things from

the fraction run, talking about incorporating

the LARPers was so fun. Yeah. Yeah, cuz those

people who are the law the LARPers characters

are originally characters who lived in Clint's

apartment right so So it's a You know, it's nice

that instead of it being Clint's apartment at

squirrels apartment. We're hanging out in but

also There's another deleted scene that I I started

like making, you know, happy noises at, which

is the original time that they were going to

burn the Ronin uniform when Clint goes up on

the rooftop with the old Weber girl up there.

Yep. And now that you've been reading the comics,

that is straight out of the comics. Yeah, it

is. Like that roof and that grill. Yep. Yeah,

and I love how they gave us the behind -the -scenes

on on pizza dog and oh That was so cool. Yeah,

I Also enjoyed the fun that Haley and Florence

had You know with their teens together and how

they both like needed a friend and they were

kind of like these frenemies for a bit Yeah I

didn't, I don't know, maybe I didn't pay. See,

that's the thing when I'm watching something,

I try my best not to pay attention to like, especially

with this, I wanted to kind of be surprised.

And with Maya, I was really surprised because

the actress that plays her is actually deaf and

she has a prosthetic and I was like, Wow. Like,

I knew she was deaf. I knew that much, but I

did not know. So it's, again, why I love these

behind -the -scenes things. It's interesting

to see and hear from these actors talking about

the roles that they're playing. Yeah. And not

only that, not only is she deaf and disabled,

but she also had never acted before. Right. This

is technically her debut. Yeah. Which I just

also found that being awesome. Yeah, very much

so. Cause she nailed it. She did. I mean, it's

one of the best acting jobs I've ever seen for

a character, for anything. And that's the thing

with this show. Why, why I think for those of

us that love the show and love the MCU, and I'm

not saying that I'm sure there are plenty of

people that don't and that's fine, whatever,

but it's just one of those things where we enjoyed

it so much. Well, I'm gonna spring this on you

now, but I'm sure at some point over on studio

2009 I'm going to have us basically marathon

the entire season and talk about it as one long

thing So basically all six parts of our episodes

just jumbled into one, but I ain't re -editing

all of that together It's one of those things

where It just feels like it was the right thing

at the right moment, especially with you know,

it's centering around the Christmas holiday,

and all of that, unlike a certain 1988 film.

Anyway. Cool. Well, I'm actually also going to

send you a link of a YouTube video that I watched

this morning that I think our listeners will

really like. It is actually a video of a... deaf

YouTuber who talks about what Hawkeye got right

about deafness and hard of hearing. And it was

just really like, well, it was really educational

in seeing the amount of nuance that went into,

you know, the characters and I mean, we've already

talked about the audio. but just even the small

things that Clint does, that Maya does, and how

it talks about their characters and what kind

of people they are just from looking at their

body language when it comes to this. It's a really

fascinating look. And it's definitely worth a

watch if anyone is interested in seeing, you

know, from the perspective of a fan who is deaf

and how their representation came through in

this. Yeah. Even as someone who isn't... I'm

not technique. I have disabilities and I have

legal blindness kind of thing, even though I'm

not totally blind, but I am classified as legally

blind. Yeah. So it's one of those things where

we've praised this in our past six episodes.

We're praising it here. The attention to detail

and the attention to, like you said, getting

it right of. If we're really gonna lean into

this wheel of whatever it is, it doesn't have

to be a deaf. It doesn't have to be like the

specific, but specifically for this. I love the

attention to detail and I love that you have

people like this, this person in the video that

you sent me that I'll have to watch after we

record this. Uh, and I'll embed it in the episode

post for everyone else to see it. You know how

they're reacting to something that. It doesn't

necessarily affect them directly, but it's representative

of being deaf. It's like you've talked about

where the representation of hearing loss and

deafness is at an all -time high. Maya as a character

and the actress herself is an actual deaf person.

You know, and it's just so interesting and fun

and that's why I am loving these Marvel limited

series TV shows. I've said this before and I'll

say it again. Between WandaVision, Falcon and

Winter. I'm sure Loki feels the same way, but

I still have not watched that. Uh, and, and this,

they all feel like an hour long Marvel movie.

It's basically a six hour Marvel movie per series.

Yeah. And it's just so good. Uh, Kazi talking

about, again, talking about working with, with

Maya and all that and everything else. And basically

half the time he's just whispering to her or

half of his actual dialogue is just him whispering.

Like I don't. Again, I'd have to go back and

watch and we will eventually remember Kazi like

yelling at all Yeah, and and and about how the

you know how he feels that he is being brought

into her quieter world You know While he's while

he's doing his performing with her and I also

love how we talked about that. He He got so much

time uh, with her beforehand that they were able

to really practice his lines to make sure that

he was getting the sign language correct. Yeah.

You know, so, so it wasn't just like a half,

you know, half ass attempt at sign language on

Kazoo's behalf, but actually showing that. And

then of course we watched the deleted scene with

baby Kazoo and meeting baby Maya at the karate

studio. And, you know, I was just like, they've

been friends that long. It would be, you know,

a bad representation if, you know, he didn't

know sign language, like the back of his hand,

if this is his best friend. Absolutely. Yeah.

I have like, and I don't remember, hence why

we're going to do the whole thing in one episode

later down the line. But I don't think we...

I don't remember any of our episodic recordings

of us straight up saying that we weren't going

to continue watching because of insert what we

didn't like here or whatever. I mean, yes, we

critiqued it, but most of the time we gushed

all over it because we were just enjoying it

way too much because it's such an enjoyable six

episodes of television. It was Hawkeye. There

was no way I was not going to stop watching.

Oh God, I know he won't do this because it's

not in the character, but all I can hear in my

head is Jeremy Renner. Fuck Iron Man. He is not

Brendan Thwaites. I know, I know. Oh, man, what

else about the behind the scenes did you want

to bring up? My mind is going through it all

really quickly. Yes, I love your mental Rolodexing.

No, I love the relationship built between Jeremy

and Haley. Yes. And how they talked about how

he or actually no, he said himself that he kind

of was like, He took it on himself to help usher

her through understanding, you know, being in

the MCU. And you kind of look at the, you know,

he's playing a character who's ushering this

girl into becoming a superhero, you know, or

at least, you know, knowing enough not to get

herself killed while playing superhero. And so...

It's kind of awesome to know that like on set,

their relationship was mirroring what their characters

were building. And I think that's the thing.

And he even said it himself. Jeremy Renner as

Hawkeye has said more in these six episodes of

his entirety of the MCU to this point. And I

think that's great. And he also mentioned where,

even if you get a film trilogy, he mentions about

how normally a film is, yes, you come together,

yes, you get to know each other, yes, you do

the work, but then you go on to do other things.

Whereas being in a connected cinematic universe,

whether it's film or television or whatever.

you have more time, you have more camaraderie

with each other, you get to know each other a

lot better and a lot more. And I think that is

really, really great because there are plenty

of things I've seen where you can just tell one

of the actors or actresses doesn't want to be

there or doesn't want to be doing that work because

they may have a problem with one of the other

actors or actresses kind of thing. You always

hear about on I'm really going to show my age

now, folks. You always hear things about hard

copy and current affair way back when on television.

Of course, nowadays we have stuff like TMZ and

all that, but like you said, on -set drama and

things like that. It just doesn't seem to be

that way with this show, with this universe.

as far as I can tell. And like you said, the

- Sorry. Go ahead. I was just going to say that,

that yeah, there have been on set, you know,

arguments, but they're not like relationship

movie ending arguments. They're just, you know,

I'm seeing my character a different way or, you

know, Why did you get like eighty seven waffles

delivered to your trailer and I only got two

in the morning? I'm making the arguments are

nearly as TMZ worthy as Yeah, you know as as

they used to be yeah, absolutely Again folks

everything that Alice and I have done between

the what -if series and the Hawkeye series and

like I said in one of the other episodes We're

gonna go backwards with Marvel's TV shows, so

Falcon and Winter was before Hawkeye, so we'll

do that, and then we'll do Wanda, and then we'll

probably go forward and do Loki, and whatever

else they end up giving us. And sadly, I don't

know why, because nobody has actually come out

and said why, but what if was removed from the

schedule for the year? I remember... I think

it was Brad Winterbaum or one of the other people

on the what -if thing. They were like, we want

to do one series per year for at least the next,

you know, two years. And I hope they didn't just

end what if all together. No, they just moved

it to 2023. I've already read the article on

that. Okay, good. I have not read the article

on that, so that's good. It's a lot of things

to do with China and the COVID and the manufacturing

stuff, everything that's happening in China.

Yeah. But Hawkeye, Marvel Assembled, absolutely

love it. I cannot wait to see more if they give

us more. I hope they do. I mean, I hope they

do, but it's all going to depend on, honestly,

it's going to depend a lot on Dr. Strange's movie.

I think like the entire phase five is going to

be, you know, dependent on that Dr. Strange movie.

Yeah, I am pretty sure as well. And the fact

that we're, you know, starting phase four, and

we said this last time, and I've said on other

podcasts, In 2008, if Iron Man didn't do what

it did, you know, all these years later, we wouldn't

have everything that we have had. So - You want

to know what else would have done that too? What's

that? If they didn't cast Robert Downey Jr. as

Iron Man. Because Todd Cruz was the original

idea. As much as I enjoy Tom Cruise's movies,

whichever ones they may be, I cannot... If Tom

Cruise ended up being Tony Stark Iron Man, all

I would see is an amalgamation of Pete Mitchell,

Brian Flanagan from Cocktail, and Ethan Hunt

from Mission Impossible. That's all I would see

if that had happened. As I've said before, I

had known of things that Downey Jr. had done

in the past before Iron Man, but when I think

of Robert Downey Jr. outside of Iron Man, there's

only one movie I can go to, and that's 1989's

Chances Are with him and Sybil Shepherd. Mm -hmm.

Yeah. Marvel Studios assembled. Keep doing what

you're doing. Absolutely love it. We need more

Hawkeye. obviously, because we love it. The universe

needs so much Hawkeye, we got two of them. That's

true. That's the other thing I want to bring

up before we kind of get out of here, folks is

they specifically mentioned that he essentially,

you know, passes the baton to Kate. So I'm wondering

if there is another six episode series or whatever

for this. I don't want to say a second season

because they've built all of these as limited

series. I'm wondering if he's going to only get

involved if he has to. And again, Jeremy even

says, you know, he's always wanting to retire,

but you know, he just, they just keep pulling

him back in. He can never retire for long. And

he even, he mentioned what he mentioned in one

of the other interviews, whatever else he's like,

and I've seen this in other video stuff that

he's done. People really want to see a 50 year

old. you know, Jeremy Renner in tights. Apparently

they do, folks. Yes, please. However, those uniforms,

I like how they talked about how their new uniforms

are actually more like sportswear than armor.

And he's like, I have the most comfortable, one

of the most comfortable outfits in the MCU. Yeah,

it's just so fun. Yeah. Absolutely such fun.

I think we're gonna take a quick break, come

back and we'll close the show out after this.

But anyway, there was Kevin Feige and so I went

over to him and he was like all film score nerding

out on me. But you're Kevin Feige and if only

my husband Lou was here. And then this phone

call came about writing a song for a Marvel television

show. And once again, I thought Lou. has put

them up to this. So there was Kevin saying I

would really like there to be a full Broadway

musical number of an Avengers musical. So luckily

all the years I had gone to see all the movies

with Lou and then sat in the car afterwards.

and he would explain to me what I had just seen

and he explained to me all the Easter eggs and

all the history so I actually knew words like

Chitauri and Tesseract I mean I never thought

I'd be writing lyrics with rhyming Tesseract

Each week we dive headfirst in the landscape

of movies as we discuss movie news, play movie

games, go in -depth on reviews, and even have

a top 10 countdown or two. Also, don't miss our

Director Retrospective Series where we review

line is, if you love movies and love podcasts,

you need to experience We came into this whole

thing and it was kind of already built and they

plugged Ty and I right in. So we immediately

started learning choreography and by like the

second day we kind of learned the whole number.

I was actually surprised at how similar it is

to what I actually do for a living when I work,

you know, when I go do a show on Broadway. because

I haven't done a Broadway show in about 30 years,

25 years. And I was thinking that it was going

to be easy. You know, I thought that we were

going to come in and it was going to be, you

know, a musical that felt like a TV show and

that like you weren't going to have to do much

choreography and I wasn't going to be sweating

for eight hours a day in a rehearsal. And as

it turns out, we're doing a real musical here.

Avengers unite because we got to hear you. We

cast everybody here locally in Atlanta, and because

we're dealing with, you know, the COVID pandemic,

we couldn't do what we would normally do, which

would be, you know, a big giant cattle call.

And then the hard part was finding the people

who could play the Avengers. Officially Tony

Stark. I'm like, I'm shook. I looked at him and

I was like, what? Who's that? Never did I think

I'd be on a stage. Acting as Hawkeye being Hawkeye

and you know shooting arrows killing bad guys

while you know singing and dancing alright folks

we are back and the other thing they touched

on as far as the the Chronology of this is also

dealing with what happened when Clint was Roman

yes, and that that's important thing for us to

come back to because When we were in endgame

the only thing we got from Ronan was that Rody

was in Mexico, where the Mexican cartel was murdered.

And then we see Nat finding him in Japan as he's

fighting the Yakuza. So through the episodes,

you know, we realize that like, this is more

than just, you know, what we saw this was something

that was going on for a while and he's killed

a lot of people and being able to to see how

they used what came of Clint and Ronan and Hawkeye

in Endgame, even down to how they used Clint's

loss of his family as the emotional stake for

the entirety of Endgame, because it's weirder

than with Iron Man, with them, and, you know,

you have it with Scott, with Cassie. You see

that family being that important. Again, folks,

we understand this is all fictional, you know,

stuff and whatever else. But if let's just say

Thanos appears in the Antarctic in real life,

and he snaps his fingers and I'm in the middle

of recording a podcast all of a sudden. Mike,

Mike, are you there? Are you there, Mike? Mike?

Man, that was a weird. It's been 15 minutes.

No, it's been five years. Wait, what? I had a

podcast recording going on for five years. You

started it and your computer was on and apparently

you kept it plugged in so it just kept going.

Sadly, I don't think my 12 -year -old HP desktop

tower is an Energizer bunny. It's a good tower,

but it's probably going to have to get replaced

pretty soon. You know, as we mentioned more with,

uh, Yelena and, and, and Kate, like, they could

almost, you know, this is the eighties kidding

me folks coming out. New series in 2025. Kate

and Yelena, a la Kate and Allie from the eighties.

Just maybe Elena part of the Avengers. We're

good. You know, they never really had a Black

Widow style person there anyway. Yeah, so much

fun. Anything else we want to bring up before

I run through the outro? All right, we talked

about Jeremy we talked about Haley We talked

about Oh Just the stunts are amazing. The stunts

are yeah always amazing That's the interesting

thing for me with some of, and again, we'll get

more in depth into this on Falcon and Winter

and Wandavision and all that, but overall the

stunt work that is done, you know, to show the

various things as well as keeping the actors

and actresses safe is amazing. And I like them

nowadays for things happening now. I like a mixture

of real life stunt work and CGI thing. Again,

that's why I love that, even though it made me

dizzy as hell. That's why I love they talked

about that camera that they have, that 360 giant

gimbal, the real rotating camera for the car,

because that allows you to do so much that you

would, you know. 30 40 years ago, you'd have

to do all of that in miniatures or in whatever

else to get it done The technology for it has

just come way Way far and it's awesome. And I

and I love how they also like they they talked

about how much experience Jeremy has in the action

world. Whereas being the Avenger who up till

now had the least amount of screentime, being

able to show just how skilled he is in these

action scenes, and doing a lot of stunts on his

own, and apparently runs really fast. It's it's

nice to see that and then hearing Haley talking

about you know her dad being a professional trainer

and helping her get ready and Just just listening

to people and what they What they learn to take

on roles and how it sticks with them in kid Jeremy's

case, you know How it just, it sticks and it

becomes part of your, you know, your muscle memory

of how to do things. Like Jeremy will probably

always pull, you know, if he does archery, he's

always going to pull his arrows and bows like

he does for Hawkeye because it's muscle memory.

Yeah, absolutely. The last thing I will say is

that, you know, you talk about deleted scenes

and extra scenes and everything else. Which this

is probably gonna be the end and at the tail

end of this this podcast folks. So stay at them

till the very very end the technically Credits

slash after credits and credit scene Am I still

alive and he's just tied up and you get all the

other larpers doing stuff He keeps saying things

like am I still alive? Am I still here? Feel

like my soul whatever it is that he says I don't

have it fully memorized yet, but you know what

I'm talking about that last Yeah, yeah, yeah

is going to be like a new catchphrase for me

Yeah, but no Oh the behind the scene of Clint's

backstory Yes, we gotta not forget about that.

Yes because I'm sitting here and I know like

the backstory before it was retconned for Fraction,

you know, and the backstory that's kind of been

retconned again for the MCU and then the Ultimates

backstory. And now we're having this version

of the backstory. Yeah. At first, when they were

walking through the carnival, Mom and Clint,

Was just like oh, oh are we gonna go right from

him? Like, you know dad coming and beating mom

up and then he's gonna be in the car knee and

they're gonna take him But no it didn't go that

way Bethany and I were talking and you know,

we're we're not sure how we Like it. It's definitely

unique In its own way, but there is one piece

that connects it a lot of his a lot of his comic

backgrounds and it's the moment where Clint has

the shotgun and he's aiming it at the guy who

at the shopkeeper behind his mom and then we've

already seen the scene before that he doesn't

miss and then suddenly He shoots through the

window at the cop car. And yeah, that matches

some different versions of Clint's story where

he's the one who finds out that the, you know,

the Carson, you know, circus of crime is a circus

of crime and not just a regular circus. And there's.

I think the very first instance where, which

is what I use for my fan fiction, where he finds

out and he runs away, and they're afraid he's

gonna go tell somebody, and so they end up injuring

and almost killing him, and then the circus moves

on and leaves him behind. There's the other one

that you see in... No in Avengers assembled the

cartoon series where he was the original trick

shot for the Carson circus of crime and he ended

up like Setting off a silent alarm somewhere

that they were robbing and that's how Nick Fury

found out about him and so there's a lot of these

tellings of his backstory where He knows right

from wrong. And he is not comfortable, you know,

lying or, or, or hurting people, which when you

look at where he is and where he starts his MCU

journey, you know, aiming his bow and arrow at

Thor and working for shield where he is a master

assassin. Yeah, you know you see that he Got

knocked off of his that path he had when he was

a kid and that's kind of similar to a lot of

his backstories is that his back if if if the

if Nick Fury or you know in the original comics

if Jarvis the original Jarvis not the computer

Jarvis had it intervened you know, his life would

be in a much different place. Yeah. And in this

one, the cop, you know, Clint shooting the cop

car and that cop that stands behind him, you

know, that's like representing Clint standing

up for what's right. And him being, you know,

put into the hands of people who What better

for him than what he currently has? Yeah, absolutely.

And once again, it, you know, it cannot be understated

or overstated enough how understanding Agent

19 aka Laura is with who he is. And like, again,

they, they pull various clips from the movies

and obviously stuff from the show on the behind

the scenes. And one of the clips from the movies

that they pull because they're talking about

Infinity War and Endgame is the clip where she's,

you know, I've never had a problem with your

avenging. Yeah, that's the clip from Ultron.

Yeah. Yeah. In Ultron, when they cemented the

family life, I think that was a huge thing just

for the original six Avengers. It just became

like, what are we doing this all for? And grounding

it to like, what has, you know, the real value

and values. That was a great leap for the character.

You know, I totally support your avenging. I

couldn't be prouder. But I see those guys, those

gods. You don't think they need me? I think they

do, which is a lot scarier. I have not had a

single problem. I might have a few nitpicks because

you're always supposed to have a few nitpicks,

but all of the Avengers movies have just been

so solid and so great with his story, with everybody's

story and how they're all setting up and how

they all... There was an idea, blah, blah, blah,

Stark knows this, you know, where every once

in a while these six people come together to

save the world kind of thing. And we see and

have seen over the last X number of years, every

major character's journey. And finally getting

to explore Hawkeye's journey in this format is

possibly the best way they could have done it

visually. Yeah, cuz everybody else got a Movie,

you know you had I mean some of them have multiples

but for your founding you all they all had movie,

you know, you started with Iron Man then Thor

then Captain then Hulk and And finally, you know

Black Widow gets her movie but Hawkeye gets the

series and I love it because They've held off

on doing anything about him for so long that

there is so much of his story to be told. There

still is so much story of his to be told. And

I like how in the assemble that they pointed

out the Hawkeye that Renner had been playing,

the Clint that Renner had been playing up to

the point of the series starting. Was the ultimate

version of Hawkeye the guy that really doesn't

say to he says maybe one or two lines. He's in

the shadows. He's always ready, you know, you

know, stay on target, you know, all of that.

And now. Oh, ultimate Hawkeye ultimate Hawkeye

has his own tragic story. Yes, but they were

going off of that character for most of his appearances

up until the show and obviously with the show

they're adapting the the fraction version which

yeah So good So good. Oh and then also for all

of those, you know Hawkeye fans who are like,

well, where are we gonna go next? Because you

know, this show is this series is over for now.

Hopefully more come But, you know, where can

they get more new material? Starting in May,

there is going to be a five issue limited series

of the Thunderbolts going against the Frisk Run

Thunderbolts. That's currently in Canon, in Comic

Canon. Luke Cage and Clint are going to find

and make their own team to show New York City

that the Thunderbolts and New York still have

people who can protect them. That is very cool.

Yeah, and they released the image of their costumes

the other day. And it looks his costume looks

very much like his Hawkeye series costume the

only thing that I have to say and my only complaint

that I talked about on Twitter is With the way

that they draw his arms. They have like that

purple stripe coming from shoulder to his wrist

before his gloves Yeah, I just want to know where

my finger stripes are Because Nightwing has the

exact same color Layout of where his colors and

his you know other things are on his body and

Nightwing has his finger stripes back Clint needs

finger stripes Yeah, that's all I can think to

say there are people who will agree with me I'm

not saying that they won't. I'm, I'm agreeing

with you actually, like, if you're going to use,

like, again, using the fraction run for the costumes

in the series, but if you're going to say that,

oh, he's kind of a little bit different in, obviously,

the comics or in this new mini series that you're

talking about, it's coming out in May, that's

coming out in May, you know. I think everybody

wants to put their stamp on a Hawkeye suit and

who knows, maybe they'll skip a generation of

finger stripes and put it on the next suit. I

don't know. Well, Hawkeye hasn't actually had

like a uniform, uniform in a while. Um, he's

usually in like, in like Gene like black jeans

and his shirt with his emblem on it for the most

part. Mm -hmm. That's been his uniform since

I think Actually since probably House of M Right

when he left when he left their own in uniform

and went back to being Hawkeye unless he's wearing

the traditional uniform which he Prings out every

now and then for reasons, but so this is probably

the first time, this is at least 10 years since

I've seen a costume change in the main continuity.

Hmm. Yeah, that is awesome. And it's gonna be

awesome to see what they do. And yeah, it's just

so very interesting what they're doing comics,

TV, movies. When you're talking about the Marvel

Cinematic Universe. almost always 98 .888, 98

.888, 98 .888, 98 .888, 98 .888, 98 .888, 98

.888, 98 .888, 98 .888, 98 .888, 98 .888, 98

.888, 98 .888, 98 .888, 98 .888, 98 .888, 98

.888, 98 .888, 98 .888, 98 .888, 98 .888, 98

.888, 98 .888., Oh, very, very cool. I already

bought them. They look beautiful. I love the

shots when I get Kate and Clint, you know, near

each other. I'm just like, oh, they blend so

perfectly together. Yes. I just need a purple

outfit for Natasha. And then I will actually

have like a full team uniform because I have

Michaela, sorry, Kamala and Kamala is wearing

this like purple and gold outfit from the War

for Wakanda expansion. Very cool. Very cool.

Yes. I am just like randomly rambling about all

my fun guy stuff. I just want my Funko's now.

I was just going to say that. Yeah, I. Yeah,

I'm waiting on good ol' Wes at Poppin' Off Toys

to get Hawkeye in for that pre -order. Yeah,

my Hawkeye should be coming in. I figure I can

pick up Maya and Yelena there, but Wes still

never put up frickin' Kate and Lucky. I know.

So I'm just gonna have to walk in there today.

I pick up Hawkeye and be like, okay, and I'm

getting this, this, and this. Yep. Absolutely.

All right, folks think And then that that Funko

thing that's coming up soon Oh Funko fair 2022.

Yeah, I don't know if you I know you got really

excited by the what if uh, you know the backlit

series Yeah, but Hawkeye was also next to it

on the page picture Was it really? Yep Wait a

minute, hold on. So I don't know if it's because

this might happen before the Hawkeyes are released

Or if there's gonna be more Because I will tell

you I will die for a Clint Barton in his larping

costume The only thing is he has to come with

the sword Yeah, I'm sure they would give him

the sword, you know, so I really would love to

see that I know it's really weird but because

I would love to see him in the suit in his like

his formal suit because that was so like James

Bond ish I think I pre -ordered the sweaters.

I pre -ordered the original the regular Hawkeye

and then the two sweater Christmas sweaters ones

Yeah, the Christmas murder ones are target exclusives.

Yeah, the Disney store apparently has released

a whole bunch of Hawkeye stuff in the store.

So I get paid next Friday. And so I'm going to

see how much money I could maybe put aside to

see what they've got. Don't have a lot of money.

Right my big bills come out around that at the

end of the month, but yeah But there will be

some money. Yay Alright folks weary at the heck
