ATTF/TPB Asks You: Will you be checking out the SkyBound Entertainment ENERGON UNIVERSE Comics?

ATTF/TPB Asks You: What was your favorite part of TRANSFORMERS V1 if you've read it?

You got the touch. Stan Bush here, and you're

about to transform and roll out. Only on the

Geekcast Radio Network. Yeah! Hey, it's Jesse

Rass here, and you've made the great escape into

comics by jumping inside the pull bag today.

Catchphrase. You've just jumped inside the pull

bag. Join TFG1 Mike and the rest of the comic

crew here at the GCRN as they make their great

escape into comics. From DC, Marvel, and Image

to IDW, Boom Studios, and Xenoscope, we have

everything right here. We cover things like Transformers,

He -Man, Super Heroes, TMNT, and Radiant Black.

Yeah, we have all that and so much more. It's

all inside the pull bag here on the Geekcast

Radio Network. So, without further ado, it's

time to talk about the comics we're reading right

now, here inside The Pull Bag. You've just jumped

inside The Pull Bag, which is crossing over with

all things Transformers. I am, of course, THU

and Mike, and normally you don't hear my voice

first on the ATTF side of things, but since this

is The Pull Bag... Here we are. Today, I introduce

Steve Megatron to the Skybound Entertainment

Transformers comics. Hi, Steve. How are you?

Yo, yo, yo. That didn't answer the question.

Put your yo -yo away. I am doing well, but some

Autobots and Decepticons are not new. Yeah, it's

a little rough, isn't it, in there? Especially

the humans. Yeah, well... We'll get into that.

Let's say this. The humans are... I don't know.

They're caught in the middle, aren't they? Today

we will be discussing Volume 1, Robots in Disguise

from Skybound, which collects issues 1 through

6 of the ongoing Transformers series. But for

me, this is kind of a refresher course, because,

man, did I forget half this crap. But I've been

recording and reviewing the Energon universe

with Jesse, aka Matrix Prime, for the last almost

three years on his podcast, Another Comic Review,

since the Energon universe debuted back in 2023.

Yeah, so for those that do and don't know, I

had carpal tunnel and ulnar nerve surgery done

on my left arm, which, as I've mentioned before

on other podcasts, I have cerebral palsy on my

right side, so my left arm is the only good one

I can use. Yeah, well, last year that needed

to have some work done on it, apparently. And,

yeah, I couldn't really do any editing. I could

basically just beg people to have me on their

podcast and just show up. I could do the reading.

I could do the watching. I could listen to whatever

and just show up and talk and not have to worry

about doing any of the actual work for once.

Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha. Joke's on me. But yeah, here

we are three years later in the pull bag, and

I'm bringing Steve in on the volumes because

I was curious to see how Skybound was going to

do the volume collections for the Transformers.

Skybound Entertainment is an imprint under Image

Comics. Here inside the pull bag, we've done

a ton of Image Comics stuff over the years, like

Radiant Black and Cowl and a bunch of other stuff.

So, yeah, there's that. But the creative team

on Transformers for this first arc, for the first

24 issues, for the most part. Writer, artist,

Daniel Warren Johnson. Colorist, Mike Spicer.

Letterer is Russ Wooten. Woot! Yay, Russ, you

rock. It's a joke we did on another comic review

because of his name. But, yeah, this is my first

experience to Daniel Warren Johnson when we started

this. I did a little bit of research on him.

I know he did a series called Do a Powerbomb,

and that's where all the wrestling stuff comes

in in this trade here. And just because I was

curious, and I'm not going to read most of this,

but I was curious to see how Google AI Summary

would handle Transformers Volume 1 Robots in

Disguise. It basically key spotlighted certain

things. It's interesting. It got most of it right.

I'm still not... But I do have a lot of my notes

and whatever else, but more so interesting folks

is what Steve thinks of this stuff, because you

guys can go over and listen to the last three

years of another comic review. I can, I'm pretty

sure I can pull up and link to the first six

individual issues or the six individual episodes

where Jesse Ryan and I reviewed these specific

issues. But what were your thoughts reading this?

So, to be quite honest, I wasn't sure what to

expect going into it. Just from the fact that

I never even attempted. I haven't read a Transformers

comic outside of Beast Wars from IDW since the

early couple of years of IDW. Yeah. Like, I haven't

read a Transformers comic since then. I was interested

in this alternative universe that they kind of

opened up with. And I was kind of puzzled, like,

this isn't how the story goes. Because, I mean,

I grew up with not only G1, you know, the cartoon

on reruns. I saw those. And I rented them at

the video store on VHS tapes and grew up with

Beast Wars. So I was familiar with, you know,

some of that. But it was also familiar with the

G1 Marvel comics. Like I grew up on those. I

saw those at the comic shop. I had pretty much

all of them except for like 12 issues in some

of the G2. And some of this went that direction

and some of it did not. And so it was quite interesting

to see how some of these things kind of came

to be. I found myself intrigued and wondering,

you know, how all of this was going to come into

play later. So I did not expect the level of,

uh, gore. Uh, but I guess I should have, cause

I mean, the guy did the walking dead. So, uh,

so yeah, like, well, no, uh, this, this comic

universe, not specifically the writers. Yep.

Yep. Yep. But, Yeah, so I was a little bit confused

in kind of going, oh, what's going on here? And

then I was like, oh, crap. I would not want to

be a human in this universe. Granted, Marvel

didn't quite go this level, but they did paralyze

people and torture them to a crisp and put them

in, you know, exosuits and all kinds of crazy

stuff. So there's a little bit of a difference,

but it's just, you know, modern writing and stuff

compared to back in the day, what had happened.

But yeah, I don't know. surprised by a lot of

the characterizations a lot of the random stuff

that was kind of happening and the way that they

cobbled some of the transformers and yeah it

was it was quite interesting though yeah for

me what is interesting on this read rereading

through this First of all, like I said, like

I mentioned, when Jesse Ryan and I did these

as single issues, we only did them as single

issues. This is the first time I've looked at

it in trade paperback. And again, not saying

I'm just making a statement here. Most of the

time when I read trade paperbacks from any company,

could be anybody, DC, Marvel, IDW, whatever.

They each have a specific type of format where

they will split the issues up so you can tell

where one issue begins and the other issue ends.

And as you go along and go forward, so you kind

of have a story break and you also get to see

like specifically comparing. Apples to oranges.

The previous license holder to the current license

holder, IDW, would do cover breaks. So at the

end of one issue, you would see a variant cover.

The next issue, you would see the cover of whatever

that issue is. Skybound doesn't do that. Skybound

does, it opens it up with volume book one, volume

one, whatever it is, and you just go through

the whole thing. I literally had to sit on the

TF Wiki page to make sure I remembered where

the actual stopping point was from issue to issue,

because how I took my notes for this recording

was I broke it down by the six issues, because

what surprised me was out of the six issues,

issue three and four, are where most of my notes

are. Issues 2, 5, and 6 are where my least amount

of notes are. So that was interesting to me.

But yeah, the formatting for the trade paperbacks

for Skybound, they just... want you to read the

whole book which i get i understand that but

even just putting a and i didn't notice it this

time i first read through maybe i'll look through

it again really quick but i'm pretty sure there

are no markings at the end of when that first

Issue ends. There is no. Yeah, there is no. There's

nothing to delineate. I didn't know where one

issue started and the next began. I was like.

Yeah, no. Yeah, no, there isn't. That's why I

had to go back and I had to go to the TF wiki

and I literally read the last point of the synopsis.

And I'm like, oh, I know where that is in the

book. Okay, cool. Which I guess technically,

if you want to read this as a whole book that

works as a whole story that is uninterrupted,

that's great. But again, I don't know. It is

what it is. For me, as someone who usually breaks

these down issue by issue for taking notes for

a podcast, it was a little unhelpful. And Daniel

Warren Johnson had said in interviews leading

up to this and right after the first issue had

been published that it was his dream to create

his own version of Generation 1. And it is his

own version. he had said that he was grew up

with the toys, grew up with the cartoon, grew

up with the Marvel comics, but he was more so

into the cartoon. So in those early in that,

that first issue here, you see that it feels

familiar. Like we know kind of, but Oh no, it,

it, he changes it up a lot and that's good. So

we don't just feel like it's the calm. It's the

cartoon in comic form. I actually think it's

kind of cool and funny seeing Transformers doing

wrestling moves. I don't think I've ever seen

that before. It was quite humorous, actually.

Prime flipping the Decepticons over his back.

And I was like, okay, he really took them out.

Yep, yep, yep. Optimus Prime's FU or AA's Skywarp,

that was crazy. That happens in issue three.

That was nuts. I like Daniel Warren Johnson's

writing in this story. I think the writing is

good. I like the art in this first arc for the

most part. I like his art throughout most of

his run, but towards the tail end of the run,

I kind of get... I kind of got tired of him at

the very tail end. By issue 17 or 18, I'm like,

okay, what's next? So we'll get to that eventually.

Not today, though. Do like Spike and Carly here

in this, but. I think they were kind of throwaways,

like Carly was more of a character than Spike

and Spike spent most of it out of commission.

Yeah. Spark plug. They called Sparky. Yeah, that's

fine. I yeah, I. Go ahead. I was going to say

his whole arc is rather strange in this one.

I mean, they gave him a totally different vibe.

Yeah. That's good, though. How he went out was

different. Yeah. Well, it's been three years.

I think we can spoil it at this point. He...

Well... He became one with the Matrix. Yeah,

he became one with the Matrix. And I'm like,

wait, what? I just still to this day do not understand

that. And I still don't understand. And I took

more of a note of it now versus three years ago.

How is he going to open the Matrix to save Spike

when he ain't got no other arm? He doesn't have

a hand. He's like me. He's Mr. One Arm. Like,

I don't understand that. I know I'm very nitpicking

on this here, folks, but Optimus only has one

arm. Don't you need two hands to open the Matrix?

Like, especially finger holes? Like, I mean,

come on. That happened in issue four. How did

you feel about Starscream in this comic? I mean,

he was being Starscream. There's really not much

I can say about the whole situation because he

was very on point. I could totally see him. You

know, he did shoot Skyfire in the. In the cartoon,

I could see him raking over one of his buddies

over the coals to fix himself. I could see him

kicking Ravage because he's like, no, we need

a bigger fighter. I really don't see any difference

in his personality, per se. I mean, I guess I

see a little bit more of the Machinima, you know,

Power of the Primes saga. The self -preservation,

but also the, you know, I'm going to take them

out. I'm the leader, blah, blah, blah. G1 never

really got that because he got torched before

he got to that point. Yeah. And I feel like the

G1 comics from Marvel and Transformers Animated

and Transformers Prime and all these other mediums

have done it pretty much to the same degree.

The only thing is flesh creatures uh squish yeah

that's where i was going with this because that's

the only thing that that struck me weird is he's

like oh squishy you know yeah he's yeah i would

have expected more of the quick strike approach

of uh you know oh you mean with all those hairy

critters on them yeah like running away like

that's kind of more the vibe i was expecting

not squish squish like i could see him sitting

out there with a magnifying glass like torching

them on purpose yeah just for the funds of it

yeah that's yeah but star scream apparently likes

his his violence parties in his own words oh

my god like And again, I get it. Daniel Warren

Johnson, I believe, said Starscream was his favorite

character. So I get it. You're going to write

your favorite character the way you want to write

him. But damn, that was a little much. I love

seeing Devastator. That was awesome. And Prime

attacked him, too. Yep. Oh, man, we got it. Oh,

boy. So where does that happen? It's... Okay,

where is he? So that's how Optimus lost his arm.

It was the damn humans in Skywarp. But I had

forgotten that the humans started it. The human

military, it wasn't Sparky, but it was the human

military guys that shot at Optimus and kind of

basically tore his arm. off ish. And then Skywarp

really tears it off. So that's how often I forgot

how often has lost his arm. Cause I haven't gone

back and read these issues. Like we're up to

issue. We just finished issue 32 as of this recording.

Uh, and I haven't got like, this is the first

time I've gone back and read this. So by now,

uh, Optimus hasn't had his arm in a long time.

So, yeah. But Optimus not having his arm, he's

got to find a replacement arm. And apparently

he's got one in the back of his trailer he can

use. Oh, I can't use that. No, I can't use that.

Oh, come on, Optimus. What could it hurt? Yeah,

I love the fusion cannon that he used against

some of the Decepticons, and he told Starscream,

oh, like, you haven't been at the end of this

barrel. I was like, okay, that was good. I was

like, that was pretty cold, but it was good.

But then how he took out some, you know, like

Reflector and, you know, some of the other guys,

like, I was like, oh, and they were like, you're

gonna pay, Prime, you're gonna, oh, crap. Yeah,

oh, crap. So I can honestly see why people wanted

the toy attachment for Prime to turn him into

this. Yeah. Which the knockoff has. Like, not

mine, but a different version of the knockoff

came with. So you could swap out that arm. I

mean, I could 3D print it or buy an Amazon eBay

version too, but I don't care enough to do that.

Yeah. But it's still kind of cool. Or, you know,

you could buy the official version, too. So,

there's that. Because there was the official

version, right? I literally just saw it on Hasbro

Pulse, so I know they made an official version.

I'll have to look again, because I can't remember.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure they did. Yeah, they came

out with... Oh, no, it was New Age. Oh, no, wait.

No, Hasbro has it. Yeah, they came out with one.

It was $80. Yeah, that's probably why you went

looking for a knockoff. It was $80. What's sad

is this version of Prime, it's the Energon Universe

Prime, and he's literally no different than the

Studio Series 86, other than he has Megatron's

arm and the fusion cannon. Yeah, that's why you

went, I remember. And he costs $80. He doesn't

even come with a trailer. I know. I remember

us talking about this. He doesn't even come with

this stinking trailer. I know. I can pay the

same price and get the trailer, or I can buy

the knockoff and get all of it. Yep. I remember

that conversation. Stupid. Yeah, stupid. Hasbro

wanting their money for nothing. I do love that

shot of Megatron on the ice, though, at the end

of that issue. Oh, yeah. Like, I'm just wondering,

like, one, how did he get there? Mm hmm. And

then two. Like, how, you know, now I'm just like,

oh, how are they going to bring him back? Oh,

we'll find out because we're still going to be

doing this. So we'll find out. But. Yeah. But

yeah, so Optimus doing blammo -whammo with the

fusion cannon. Oh, poor Reflector, because that

scene, I'm up to that page now in the comic,

where I'm like, Reflector, hmm. He doesn't reflect

so well anymore, does he? No, and the sad thing

is all I can hear in my head is Thundercracker.

All right, Reflector, let's see what you can

see. That's all I can hear in my head is Thundercracker

and Reflector from that one scene in Generation

1. And now I'm like, well, I guess Reflector

isn't reflecting so well. And was this frenzy

or rumble? I couldn't tell. Reflector, buddy.

Oh, boy. And since it's Generation 1 cartoon,

I'm assuming that's frenzy. That just bit the

bucket. I do love the way he drew Arcee's alt

mode when she saves Carly. That is cool. I'm

surprised she didn't get the squish treatment.

Carly? Yeah. I saw the bones cracking. It was

like, crack, crack, crack, crack, crack. And

I was like, oh, great. She's going to be paralyzed

in Chip Chase. No. Chip chaser. Please, no, let's

not go there. They didn't. Thankfully. And then

we bring in the heavy metal with the Constructicons

and Devastator. I was like, how the heck did

they get repaired so quickly to just magically

be there? It's... I'm like, I had to have missed

something because I was like, why? How? So let's

see. They have Skywarp and Teletraan 1 now, right?

Right? Because that's what they needed. They

needed Sky... And then he and Starscream go for

a ride. That's issue 5. Thundercracker gets woken

back up. And then he sees that Skywarp made his...

Yeah, Thundercracker got woken back up. Sees

that Skywarp made his sacrifice. Uh, cause Skywarp

is now a part of Teletraan cause that's how,

yeah, cause the Decepticons have moved into the

Autobot base. So that's how the, that's how the,

um, Constructicons got. I knew I missed something

there. Like I was reading through it and I'm

like, I'm confused. Yep. I think a second read

probably would have gotten me there, but. Yep,

that's how they did it. Yeah, because the Autobots

are outside the Ark, which means the Decepticons

are inside the Ark. So that's how they have them.

And then Devastator just goes on devastating.

And you get Cliffjumper and Starscream inside

the Ark, fighting for all that it's worth. And

then... Optimus on the slab. And the Matrix,

take it, take it. Pulse to the ground, as all

MacGuffins do. And that's when, I think that's

when, yeah, that's when Sparky walks into it.

Which again, I thought was really strange. He's

like. Yeah. I'm just going to waltz my butt right

into the center of the matrix. But I was like,

what? It was a weird choice, but I get it. It's

a, I don't know. Hey, it's one less human we

have to deal with. It's true. Yeah. And then

as we end it. Although I didn't mind him as much.

I feel like Spike is going to be a whiner. I

honestly could not tell you. I honestly do not

remember. So that's one of the reasons why we're

doing this in trade. Uh, cause I, I, I mean,

y 'all can go back and listen to the next trades,

the next step is seven through 12. I don't remember

like spike wakes up at the end of the very last

page of this is spike wakes up. Where's my dad?

He had to write it on a note. Well, because I

mean, he's got a breathing apparatus on his face,

but yeah. So, you know, overall, I like it. I

still like it. This first arc, I think it's a

good arc. I think it's interesting. I like the

characters that Daniel Warren Johnson used. I

think they're all very. season one generation

one characters for the most part maybe a little

bit of season two blaster was there blaster okay

blaster was there that was all i saw season two

wise well in season three with rc okay there's

a little bit of mixing links there's sprinklings

of stuff yes but For a Generation 1 comic that

is new to this generation of Transformers fan,

2023 to 2026, whatever, however you want to say

it, I think this is a good retelling of Generation

1 in his own style, in his own art style and

writing style. I like it. I think it's a good

introduction to it. I'm trying my best not to

be as nitpicky as I was in the moment three years

ago as these issues were coming out, because

I think we were all being more critical back

then because we were doing these as they were

coming out month to month to month. Well, I think,

too, there was some polarization, too, because

we're coming off of IDW for years. Like I wasn't

the biggest fan of it, so I didn't care either

way. But now that this has been out, you know,

numerous trades later. Yep. I'm like, hmm, maybe

it's time. Well, and plus I was going to have

you do it anyway, because we're going to do a

lot of that. Well, I got my buddy Eduardo is

doing the G .I. Joe stuff with me. You and I

are going to do the Void Rivals and then this

too. Because you're a sci -fi guy. I'm on the

edges of sci -fi as I'm learning with a few other

things. But I really like Void Rivals. Void Rivals.

And I think you'll like it too. It's wholly new

characters with a little bit of Transformers

here and there. Not much. It's like... You want

to talk about season three Transformers. Well,

that's where season three lies is in Void Arrivals.

But yeah, no, Transformers volume one, Robots

in Disguise, Daniel Warren Johnson, Mike Spicer,

Russ Wooten. This time around, I really dug it.

I thought it was really well done. I don't have

as much criticism as I did three years ago. I

would recommend it to people. Are we itching

to read the next volume now? I would say so,

just because, again, I was pleasantly surprised.

Did this keep your interest throughout it? Were

you, like, captivated throughout it? Did you

want to put it down, or were you... any anything?

I was captivated. I didn't want to put it down.

I actually got distracted numerous times by other

stuff, and I was like, ah, crap. It's like, come

on. Come on. Give me a break. I was interested

in seeing where it was going to go. Yep. All

right. Zero to five with half points on the Geek

Meter. What are we going to give Transformers

Volume 1 Robots in Disguise from Skybound Entertainment?

I can't give it a perfect score, but I'll give

it a 4 out of 5 just because the robot squishing

stuff. And I felt like some of the dialogue and

the way that the MacGuffins of Prime constantly

like, can I throw the Matrix at it? Those kind

of grated on me, but otherwise I felt like it

was pretty good. Yeah, I'm right there with you.

4 out of 5. Really good. So that's where we are

on that. This is Volume 1, as I mentioned. We're

going to take a quick podcast ad break. Here

UpNerd is a podcasting network of shows hosted

by me, The Uneven Flow. People have told me I

like to talk at them about a pretty wide range

of topics. Comics, games, movies, books, whatever.

And now I'll be able to talk at you. Along with

the weekly show will be two bi -weekly shows.

First we have Fine You Pick, a show where one

host picks a movie, then both hosts have to watch

it. Then the next episode, the other host picks

the movie. Each show will have a breakdown of

why it is that movie was picked by that host,

after which will be a discussion about what it

is we just watched. Lastly, we have the show

Top 3, Bottom 3. Similarly to Fine, You Pick,

one host picks a television series, and the next

week, the pick alternates to the other host.

Here, the episodes of the show are chosen by

the top three episodes and the bottom three episodes,

as rated on IMDb .com. Yes, this is probably

the worst way to watch and review a television

show, and yes, that's the idea. On our shows,

I'll detail out how you can suggest things for

us to watch. You can reach out and talk with

the hosts and maybe even appear on an episode.

I hope you'll join me for this exciting new podcast

adventure. I swear we're going to make it more

than eight episodes. On the Simplistic Reviews

Podcast, we talk movies. We talk TV. We talk...

Hello, Julie, what the heck are you doing? Trying

to make our spot sound more exciting by adding

explosions. Yeah, I'm pretty sure you could have

got the point across with sound effects, not

the real thing. Download the show on iTunes or

at simplisticreviews .blogspot .com. I'm sure

your insurance company will cover that. No, they

won't. No, they probably won't. All right, folks,

that's going to do it for this episode of The

Pull Bag, which is crossing over with all things

Transformers. Any final thoughts, sir? No, I

was quite surprised that I actually took interest

into it. Because, again, like I said, I haven't

had an interest in Transformers comics. I mean,

I've had a passing interest in this one. Yeah.

But still. Yeah, I mean, it's a really good comic.

And I think certain things will pique your interest

here and there. And I think overall the Energon

universe three years in is a good, it's in a,

for the most part, good place. I think you're

going to like transport to oblivion, which is

the next trade, which is what we'll be covering

next time. Any social media stuff you want to

give out? People can find me on the Twitter or

X at SCP 21. Who names a thing a letter anyway?

I don't understand that. You can also follow

at Geekcast Radio. I am at TF2 and Mike on Twitter

as well. Next time, episode 585 of the Pull Bag,

Skybound Entertainment's Transformers Volume

2, as I mentioned, Transport to Oblivion. For

now, I am TF2 and Mike with... Steve Megatron.

You'll hear us back in that's not the right damn

thing. Make your great escape into comics and

we will catch you next time. You've just heard

the latest episode of The Pullback, the GCRN's

first comic review and discussion podcast. There

are several ways to get in touch with us and

leave feedback for the show. You can visit the

website geekcastradio .com where you can comment

on the episode and all of our different podcasts.

You can rate and leave a review for the show

on iTunes. Be sure to leave us feedback. Become

a fan of us on Facebook. Facebook .com slash

ThePullBag. Send us an email, feedback at GeekCastRadio

.com. Follow us on Twitter at ThePullBag and

at GeekCastRadio. So until next time, make your

great escape into comics and unleash the geek

in you.
