About this Episode

Mike, Aimee, and Nicole break down the trailer for the live-action Jem and the Holograms film coming October 23, 2015. They discuss the rebranding of the story as a coming-of-age band narrative, the casting choices including Disney Channel stars Stephanie Scott and Hayley Kyoko, and debate design choices like the size of Jem's signature pink star makeup. The hosts weigh in on what was omitted (the Misfits, Synergy) and express cautious optimism that the film could introduce the franchise to a new generation of viewers.

Hello folks, DFG1Mike here. This is our Gem of

the Holograms trailer talk mini -sode. This was

going to happen right before episode 9 where

we kick off season 2 of Gem of the Holograms

here on Showtime Synergy. Just want to let everybody

know, and I already recorded the clip and edited

it into episode 9 already, but my mom recently

passed away so I'm not sure. Past episode 9 of

the podcast how many episodes I'm gonna be releasing

or How I'm gonna release them and just don't

know at this moment because I need to figure

out some life stuff And we're gonna live and

all that everything else. I don't know how often

episode 10 through 21 22 are gonna come out it

might be once a week it might be once a month.

I just don't know just yet so Please be patient.

Thank you to everyone who has listened so far.

Please go leave iTunes reviews. Thank you so,

so much. Be truly outrageous. And here's our

talk on the Jim and the Holograms John Chu film

for the trailer. Hey, this is Samantha Newark,

and you're listening to the truly outrageous

podcasters of the Geekcast Radio Network. I,

Jerrica Benton, am living the most. Unexceptional

life. Get one of those grocery bags. My sister

Kimber and I live with our Aunt Bailey and her

two foster kids. Here she is. Sing one of your

songs. I don't like being on camera. At some

point we all wish that we could just become someone

else. I'm gonna play you a song I wrote. She'll

thank me later. Something's happening that you

really need to see. What? Oh my god. Is that

me? Did you do this, Kimber? This is about you

not going your whole life wondering what would

have happened if you didn't take that chance.

The biggest record company in the world wants

to sign us. You're gonna be famous! Welcome to

Starlight Enterprises. This is Rio. Hi girls.

You are no longer Jerrica. Jim. That's what we

call you now. That means changing the way you

act. Sound and look. This is us? No, it's Photoshop.

All the web's been talking about is Gem. Gem

and her band of sisters revealing a whole new

look. You're on the radio! No. Oh my God, you're

on the radio! I would have never guessed that

coming here would mean a whole new Jerrica. You

mean Gem. The whole world wants to know who you

are right now. An icon is not one of four, it's

one of a kind. You don't want us around anymore?

That's not how a family's supposed to act. This

is just the beginning. The version of me that

they want doesn't exist. Even when the odds seem

impossible, you need to trust the people you're

closest to. I have to fix this. Let's go, Jim.

Showtime synergy. Everyone has a secret identity.

Which one's the real you? My daughter would kill

me if I didn't get an autograph. Of course. She's

gonna freak. On your arm? Yeah. What was her

name? Uh, you just put Stephen. Hello and welcome

to a very special mini episode of Showtime Synergy.

I am your host TF2 and Mike. Joining me is Lady

Rack. Hello. Hello. And Nicole Hellstorm. Hello.

Aloha. And everyone is wondering, because we

started the Gym Podcast, everyone's wondering

since that that trailer came out what our thoughts

are on it. And that's what we're going to give

you in brief here. is our thoughts on the trailer

for Gem and the Holograms coming out October

23rd, 2015. I've been reading online, a lot of

people are unhappy with it, and I myself, I mean,

it has certain elements that we already know.

They're just reworked to fit a different way

of telling the story. At least Mrs. Bailey's

there or Aunt Bailey or whatever. At least the

Mrs. Bailey character is there at some point,

not just not there at all. For me, I liked the

trailer, but at the same time, I'm still skeptical

about the movie. I think my biggest issue is

how big the pink thing is on Jem's face. It's

pretty much halfway down to her like almost right

under her nose. That was never that big like

The makeup for the the pink star on her eye.

It was never as big as it is in the trailer Other

than that, I I liked it. I thought it was interesting.

Amy. What did you think? I'm not against it.

Let's just say this it's a it's a they're rebranding

it. I mean, it just seems like they're basically

putting it, Jim and the Holograms, and it sounds

like it's gonna be a, you know, a story that's

gonna be about a band that breaks up but gets

back together, which is not, I mean, it's a little,

maybe a little on the cliche side, but at the

same time, I also know that from what I understand,

they're gonna try to make this into a sequel.

Like they're gonna have other ones after it.

It's not just the first one. I mean, I think

the intention is to continue Yeah, but that's

also gonna depend on how the box office does

true true because if the box office doesn't do

well They won't make a sequel. Yeah true, but

we didn't see any pizzazz in the Misfits and

so that that leaves room for That leaves room

for, yeah, they didn't, they just brought, it's

just Gem and the Holograms. It's a, you know,

coming of age, coming out as a band kind of story

is what it kind of looks like it's being spun

into. Now, that being said, I think they probably

will throw a few things in there that we, you

know, that will be a little out of the ordinary,

which I expect that they probably will, or, you

know, not what we would expect. Just a few little

things to kind of just mix it up a little bit,

make it a little bit different. I really don't

mind about the the paint the stuff that they're

putting on the faces because I mean that was

just one little nitpick of mine it's not gonna

I'm not gonna not go see the movie just because

of yeah the way the makeup is but I think it's

one of those things where it just looks weird

to me I think probably what's really got everybody

I mean what's probably got everybody up in arms

more than anything else is that it's Erica Raymond

and not Eric Raymond that fact And the fact that

Apparently starlight music or Erica Raymond actually

starts calling her Jim Yeah, instead of a basic

energy. It looks yeah, it's gonna be Erica is

branding her a gem Yeah, but in the trailer she

does say showtime, you know, it's showtime synergy

So is that I'm wondering is that that in the

movie is synergy gonna show up at some point?

The voice of Christy marks or is that just an

homage for us? I'm telling you You know what

I don't know my first instinct is to say that

they're gonna take that element out and they

might kind of add some of that in and if it continues

on I mean, I'm looking at it from just From what

I've seen moviemakers do over the years kind

of taking things out and changing things a little

bit That's the only thing that I'm kind of concerned

is that they're kind of going toward the cliche.

Oh It's just a band that gets together They have

to learn their lesson and they get back together

after they break up a little bit You know that

they shows how they grow as a group and then

you know They move on to the next day because

it's it's more they It's an easy way to show

a individual growing and a group growing. And

it's not uncommon for bands to have that issue

when they hit fandom and become famous in a sensible,

kind of like a windfall. Basically, that's what

she's doing is she sings a song, it gets put

on the internet and lots of... Attention is given

to her because of that. I mean, you know anyhow

Yeah the one final thing I want to bring up is

I find it absolutely interesting and strange

that they have two Disney Channel stars as Cast

members for the hologram They have Stephanie

Scott as Kimber Stephanie Scott was a character

on ant farm for Disney Channel They have Hayley

Kyoko who was a character on the Disney Channel

movie Lemonade Mouth. She is also now starring

in CSI Cyber. So that's interesting to me. I

really thought they were going to switch the

roles for Juliette Lewis and Molly Ringwald.

and have Molly Ringwald play Erika Raymond because

Molly Ringwald can do bad. Oh yeah. I mean, she

can. Did you watch Secrets and Lies by any chance?

No. Okay, Juliette Lewis put the fear in everyone

in that TV show. She could do Erika very well.

I'm not saying she couldn't. That's not what

I said. I just said when I heard the casting

of the two ladies just hearing their names, I'm

like, okay, well, I can see Molly. Yeah, I can

see Molly Ringwald as the villain. It's gonna

be interesting to see if the Misfits even come

in. To this movie because I think I think they're

leaving that for the sequel. Yeah, that's yeah.

I Yeah, cuz you know, I haven't got my call to

play Roxie yet. I'm just waiting Yeah, so Anything

else we want to say on the on the trailer? Yeah,

yeah Oh, yeah Well, and I'm not again like even

if they do something that I'm not really I'm

not so sure I liked that blah blah blah little

cliche I you know what again as long I think

that it's just gonna bring in a new generation

of viewers even if you see like even all you

do if all you do is watch the movie and you watch

that and go hmm I want to I want to get into

more of that well there's also a comic there's

also i mean there's there's stuff you know so

it's like there's stuff all over the place if

all it does is just bring in a new generation

of fan then i'm all right with that yeah absolutely

and of course we'll review it later i mean you

know later in the year we're definitely going

to sit down talk about this oh yeah um but yeah

so um I mean, you know, look, we're not going

to do a huge discussion on this, but, you know,

just what you said, Amy, it's trying to get a

new audience to notice the brand and get the

brand some more attention. It's exactly what

happened in 2007 with Giant Robots, and look

how much money that franchise has made now. You

know, so - Yeah, we'll get dolls. Woohoo! Oh,

that'd be awesome. Alright, folks. And then the

animated show. i'm not sure if i i'm not sure

if i'm not sure if i'm not sure if i'm not sure

if i'm not sure if i'm not sure if i'm not sure

if i'm not sure if i'm not sure if i'm not sure

if i'm not sure if i'm not sure if i'm not sure

if i'm not sure if i'm not sure if i'm not sure

if i'm not sure if i'm not sure if i'm not sure

if i'm not sure if i'm not sure if i'm not sure

if i'm not sure if i'm not sure if i'm not sure

if i'm not sure if i'm not sure if i'm not sure

if i'm not sure if i'm not sure if i'm not sure

if i'm not sure if i'm not sure if i'm not sure

if i'm not sure if i'm not sure if i'm not sure
