Showtime Synergy
Jem and the Holograms Annual 2017 and Issues 24-26 Review

About this Episode
It's time for Gem Jamming July here inside the
pullback. If you want to be truly outrageous,
listen in as Mike, Amy, and Nicole give you their
thoughts on IDW's Gem comics. Showtime synergy.
Hello and welcome to episode 147 of The Pull
Bag. This is the Jam in July finale here inside
The Pull Bag. And on Showtime Synergy, I am one
of your hosts, TFJoneMike. Joining me are my
mis -fats, Lady Rek. Hello, sir. What? We're
not mis -fats, really? It's an old joke from,
you know... Oh my god, I almost called her Kimber.
It's an old joke from Nicole's favorite episode
Adventures in China. That episode could go to
hell. Channeling your inner Asha right there.
Oh my gosh. That was a horrible episode. People
make fun about how horrible some movies timing
is. Nothing compared to that single episode.
Okay, not even your favorite shades of gray That
had a decent timeline China did not have a decent
timeline Everything happened within minutes of
each other. You're like, how do you multi manufacture
earrings within an hour of finding them? Maybe
they had a digital printer like like one of those
like not digital but like 3d printers. There
you go 3d printers take forever. Have you seen
them? They take a long time And this was 1985
so I seriously doubt there was a 3d printer in
1985 If they take long now just imagine back
then they would take four days to get something
done As I said, this is going to be the Gem Jam
in July finale. We were going to try to get Gem
Infinite, the six issue crossover event, Gem
and the Holograms, the Misfits crossover event.
We were going to try to get the first three issues
done, but due to the Misfits having to be divas
and travel all over the place for other conventions
and things, yeah. Hey. Hey. I'm sorry, sometimes
giant robots are not truly outrageous. Yes, they
are. They're truly outrageous. I'm wearing my
giant robot shirt right now. I'm sure you are.
Is there a pony in there somewhere? No, it's
got everyone's favorite couple crumbed on and
rewind on it. Thank you. For a second there,
I thought you were going to say Cyclonus and
Whirl. No, it says... My mechanical romance is
my chemical romance. That's awesome. So today
we're going to talk about the twenty seventeen
annual as well as the final arc truly outrageous,
which is issues twenty four, twenty five and
twenty six. The end of the podcast will give
you details on the further gem coverage Because
as I already said we infinitely ran out of time
here in the month of July To get gem infinite
covered and also we will be giving you the information
on gem dimensions at the end of this so Anything
to get out of the way before we jump into the
annual ladies Bagels. Bagels. Lots of bagels.
No bagels for you. I've earned them today. Bagels.
All right, so we get the annual and the annual
is very, very interesting. It's cute. Yeah, it
is written by Kelly Thompson. The Inexquisite
Corpse art is done by Giselle Legase. Color is
done by Jason Millett. Kimber's story art and
colors are done by MJ Barros. Aj's art and colors
are done by M. Victoria Roboto. Shayna's art
and colors are done by... I can't even pronounce
that name. I am so sorry. Katarzyna, I'm so sorry.
I just can't even Jim's story is done by Savannah
Again I see I have the trade so I can't tell
you because I don't have it Yeah, the letters
yeah, the letters are done by Sean Lee editorial
assists by Chris Carisi Yeah Edits by Sarah Gaydos
and obviously Ted Adams is the publisher at IDW.
I'm sorry artists. Sorry. So this is - We need
a little pronunciation guide, that's all. Yes,
yes, please. I'm sure somebody's gonna write
on iTunes. Oh, they're not professional because
they don't know how to pronounce the names. Anyway,
oops So yeah, this is an exquisite corpse story.
Even if you do know how to pronounce it you still
get it wrong like my maiden name Everybody got
it wrong. It's they said it phonetically, but
it was wrong just saying What is it tell everyone?
No, I'm not gonna Palmateer if it was palmateer
and people would call pal meter pal meter. It's
like no, no, no No, no. No, it's pal my tear
Palma tier. Somehow they kept on Palm meter,
Palm meter, Palm meter. It just like guys, really?
It's, it's not that hard. It is what it is. French
Canadian. Apparently I did not know this until
like I was in high school. Hey, nothing's, nothing's
harder than, uh, working with a bunch of Polynesians.
Cause their names. I just like, just give me
your first name. Yeah, but if you have more than
12 letters in your name, I'm gonna mess it up.
Oh God so this reminds me. Okay, you shouldn't
have said that Over at this week and geek net
which is another site that I work on for nerd
news network Mike the Birdman dog myself gravy
moose Alex Ricci Who Alex is actually like some?
Third or fourth distant cousin to Christina Ricci
Wednesday Adams. No joke. Anyway Nice, we just
brought on a fourth host Tristan Winkworth and
Tristan has three middle names. Oh jeez. Yeah
And at this point because we usually like, you
know, if anybody looks at the posts on geekcastrader
.com or thesweetandgeek .net Like, if you look
at Amy's name or Nicole's name or my name, it's
our first name, our screen name or nickname,
and then our last name. Well, for Tristan, I
just put Tristan, too many names, Winkworth.
I have a friend who is Italian, so she's got
three middle names as well. Because you get your
official middle name, then you take on the maiden
name of your mother, and then you have your saint's
name. Yep To fun cultural stuff to learn. Yeah.
Yeah, it is fun cultural stuff but you know most
kids with like two and three and four middle
names they They either need a crown or they're
gonna end up on investigation discovery That's
all I'm gonna say about that uh so the annual
we have an exquisite corpse story this is interesting
i think this is really cool i've never heard
of this before i thought it was just a tell a
story that you like a group story or something
i've never heard it as this before so this was
a new i was like oh that's that's what they call
those i've never heard that before so from infopedia
.org And this is actually in the comic, folks.
This is not me looking at Wikipedia. An exquisite
corpse or exquisite cadaver from the French cadaver
is a way to assemble a collection of words or
images as a team, as a story or picture is passed
from collaborator to collaborator. Each person
adds their piece in a sequence, only being allowed
to see the end of the previous person's contribution.
So yeah, this is this was I didn't know that
was called I did not realize that that's what
they they call those collaboration stories like
that It's called an exquisite corpse. So this
was a new a new I liked that I liked like oh,
okay. I didn't know that they called it that
now I know I think I know I heard the term before
but I couldn't remember where I heard it from
so Yeah, that's cool we uh... so my before we
even get into the comic my first note after reading
the description for the definition of what an
exquisite corpse story is my first notice we
ought to do an exquisite corpse story of the
showtime synergy podcast I have no idea what
that would even look like but yeah so We have
Jim and the holograms we've got the starlight
girls and we've got the misfits The starlight
girls Chrissy Deirdre Bonnie Becky Leela and
Ashley They've really only you I think I could
be wrong so Kelly, please don't crucify me if
I'm wrong here I think they've only used the
starlight girls in the annuals They have not
really been They've been in the issue. Yeah,
they've been in the issue. OK. Like I said, could
be wrong. You are wrong. We're proving it to
you. I'm pretty sure that they've been in the...
I'm really sure that they've been in earlier.
Just like the cat. They were in there just for
a short time. Yeah, I think in the very beginning,
like in the Showtime arc or something like that,
or maybe the second arc, they were in there.
But it's been so long. I mean, we've been doing
this for two years at this point. Yeah. Time
flies when you're having fun. I can't believe
that we've been doing this two years. That's
insane. I mean, technically, if you want to count
in the 24 episodes of Showtime Synergy with the
cartoon stuff, we've been doing this for three
years because we recorded that in 2014 when Amy
was still pregnant with her third child. Really?
Yeah, that's right. Well, we had to record the
cartoon reviews in 2014 because we never knew
when she... Well, at the time, we didn't know
when she was going to pop that thing out of the
oven. so. Well, she knew. She did have a due
date. Yeah. Yeah. I know. You never know when
you have Cyclonus' baby, right? Really old jokes
through that nobody's gonna get that unless I
throw it in here So we got the starlight girls.
No, they'll be wondering what where did the baby
come from? Which I love seeing the starlight
girls, I think it's so fun We open with Jerrica
and the holograms coming into practice for for
the Starlight Girls and they see the comic and
they have a discussion on whether, you know,
they should read it or not and Ajah, not Ajah,
I'm sorry, Shayna gives a description to everybody
else as far as what a, you know, exquisite corpse
is and all that and they start reading the comic
after, you know, you know everybody takes a vote
on it and and all that I think my favorite panel
in the beginning here for the art is the last
panel before the story starts with all four of
them looking at the comic I think that's so cool
I like this it's fun yeah it was very fun I agree
yeah so of course the first story has to be Kimber's
Diva. And once again, I am digging this art.
I think this is look at those misfits. They look
so cool. I love that panel. That panel is amazing.
Yes. Where their faces blacked out. But yeah,
you can tell it definitely tell who's who. Love.
It's obvious by the hair, honestly. I thought
it was more obvious by the makeup. Or lack there.
Well, yeah, there is some makeup. Because they
still have their color. Yeah. Well, the blue
hair obviously is Stormer. The red hair with
the fire is Blaze. Obviously the green is Pizzaz.
I can see why people might confuse Roxy and Jedha,
but... No. Roxy has the yellow, that's why. Jedha's
white. So you gotta make a lightning bolt she's
got a bolt over her face too, so yeah Yeah, I
just love the way this is drawn I think this
is done so well because they're all it's not
just in this It's not just in that first panel
of them That's the style throughout the whole
thing in this first part of the beginning as
far as the art goes as far as you know The the
black faces with the colors being in the makeup
and the hair and all that I just absolutely love
that So this part of the story Basically Majestics
Majestrix pizzazz finds out about Stormer and
Kimber's love affair and apparently this breaks
her heart so she banishes She banishes Stormur,
and she rips out her own heart. Technically,
wouldn't she be dead? Well, apparently... This
is a fantastic sci -fi fantasy story, so no,
she wouldn't be. Wouldn't she be a zombie, then?
Well, if you think about well Shayna has psychic
powers, so yeah, it's just all sci -fi. Yeah.
Yeah I get it. It is just a story but That image
was just so dark Ripping her heart out It's very
pizzazz though Very over dramatic. Yep So we
get Kimber and Stormer in apparently some sort
of dream sequence because Kimber actually wakes
up and says, I know where Stormer is and she
gets dressed in a real hurry and she's basically
using, you know, a tone louder than a Guns N'
Roses concert. And she's screaming and screaming
and everybody's already in the galley. Fire up
the ship. I know where she is That seemed a little
abrupt to me the telling the story then all of
a sudden. Oh Okay, I don't know. Maybe I just
missed that part where it was like, oh, yeah
They they they outcast the outcasts Stormer.
Mm -hmm. Did they say like I don't have the comic
in front of me right now whether or not she was
exiled to the the place of lost souls or it does
not say that just yet it shows you that pizzazz
stormer is kneeling outcaster yeah stormer is
kneeling at pizzazz's feet and pizzazz has this
little one thing pointed at her and this is when
pizzazz rips out her heart and then we get to
the dream sequence of Stormer being in some place.
We don't know yet. It's the planet of lost souls,
but that comes later but this is to show that
You know Kimber was you know having a dream about
this and she figured it out and she knows where
okay She knows where she's trapped. They just
don't know where the planet is. That's the thing
gotcha Guess the reason why I bring it up is
because I thought it was kind of cute because
it seemed very Juvenile like a juvenile story
and so that like I was like, oh, that's a real
abrupt kind of oh suddenly She knows where she
is and I went okay, but then I thought about
it You know what actually this is perfect because
it's supposed to be told from a bunch of little
girls that you know Aren't really well versed
with storytelling, but they're you know, just
putting something in motion or running with it
and I thought That's really kind of I kind of
really appreciated that because I thought that
makes sense that young kids would do that. And
I was like, wow, that's kind of cool that, you
know, they're putting out an annual that has
like this kind of a vibe to it. I mean, now that
I've actually gotten through the whole thing,
I look at it and I think, you know, this is very
age appropriate. Like you could give this to
a middle school kid and they'd be like, it would
totally work for them. And it totally works for
me, too, knowing that, oh, yeah, that's. that
it makes sense because it's from little kids.
And I just thought, now that was really cool.
I was really, really happy with that. Yep. I
love the way Jim looks here in the panel where
she says, we can still use the existing plan
we're already working on to find Stormer. I just
love the, I love the art there on Jim. I think
Jim looks great there. And Kimber's like, wait,
there's a plan. Why can't somebody at least tell
me the plan? I love their costumes, too. Yeah,
the costumes and just all the art in this one
was so well done. You know who Jim reminds me
of though? Uh -oh. This is going to be a reference
lost on many people, but bless your soul if you
understand Barbarella. She looks like Barbarella.
That's nice. A little bit, yeah. Wow. Barbarella.
It's the hair. She's got Barbarella hair. They
all have, like, big hair in this. Like, different
variations of... She's got the bouffant, like,
Barbarella, man. I mean, if you look at all of
them... Okay, so there's a panel a little bit
later here when Asha says... I mean, it's our
plan. Our plan, sorry. It's still... It'll totally
work. You see Jem on the left Aja on the like
center middle and then Shana and then Kimber
are on kind of the right if you look at all of
the varying images like if you go back a couple
of panels where you see Kimber saying that will
That that will never work. You know, it's it's
her traditional hair that she's had with the
shaved Undersides on the under part of her like
by her ears and thing. Yeah, that's what it's
earlier. I'm buoyant it up Um, the same thing
with Aja. Aja's hairstyle is the same. They're
just, they've added, this artist has added in
a little extra flair because it is a science
fiction fantasy type thing. It's a space adventure
and it looks so good. No, I know that! I know
that! I'm just saying what this artist has done
is they have taken... the main comic versions
that we know and they've poofed up the hair,
you know, stuff to overlap. Which makes sense
because this was in the 80s and, you know, 80s
big hair was kind of a thing. Absolutely. So
that's one of the reasons why I loved this whole
sequence is because their hair is extraordinarily
crazy and characters unto themselves. And I thought,
oh, it's perfect nod for 80s. Just saying. Not
that they're trying to go for that 80s vibe.
Like, I mean, you know, I guess you could say
because they've got a few things in here. They're
like, yeah, I guess I could see that. Like, you
know, but the whole point is, is that, you know,
this wasn't an 80s show. And so I appreciated
the big hair because of that. So if you look
at all four of them. Jim to a less extent I guess
but well she's got the vest kind of thing I'm
trying to think most of the 80s well I was trying
to like point out like shoulder pads or or Lapels
and things like that most of that stuff is 80s
fashion which is great like that last shot where
Jim says possess has got to be stopped You know
you look at Shana she's kind of got shoulder
pads Jim kind of looks like She probably doesn't,
like I said. The only thing I think - Her shoulders
are a little pointy, and a few of the other ones,
if you look back, I'm like, yeah, there's a little
bit of a something to them, substance to them,
other than just, you know. And I'm not criticizing
Kelly here. It's just the Inner Transformers
- Oh, no. No, no, no. It's the Inner Transformers,
nerd, and me coming out. Fazazz is going to be
stopped, no matter the cost. I love the Kimber
story. I think it's a great start to the story.
I love the art. I think the art is fantastic.
If there was an entire series or mini series
with Kimber and Stormer, like say, you know,
we all remember the band's breakup episode from
the cartoon series. Say there's like a four issue
mini series where Kimber and Stormer go off and
do so. I could see that four issue mini series
in this artist's style and I would love it. Absolutely.
Oh yeah. On the Kimber story, Amy, what were
you thinking for final thoughts before we move
into Ajah? And I'll go with you after Nicole.
I liked it. It was like one of those, like I
said, I mean, I have commented on that little
jarring when they first started in and the little
bit of cliche to it. But I'm like, no, this totally
works for me. And then on top of that, it was
just kind of like the art was so fun and Don't
know if they tried to make it like look like
a little a younger younger generation or younger
girl like You know wrote it or drew it because
it doesn't come off like that at all. I mean,
it's like hey, you know, I it's not crayon and
Marker or not that I expect anybody and like,
you know, I'm not quite sure on all the ages
I'm sure that they put it in there and they've
been in Like the the notes at the back of the
like, you know Text specs for the characters
have probably showed what their age is and stuff
like that. I didn't go back and find that In
fact, I'm flipping right now to see if I can
find it. Don't think I don't think the starlight
girls have have tech specs Yeah, I mean all of
the other characters do but the the I don't think
that they do I'm kind of flipping through to
see if they do because I've got them all on digital.
So I'm just kind of Swiping through really fast
to see I know I know Jim and the Holograms have
tech specs. I know TechRat, Rio, and others have
tech specs. I know the Misfits have tech specs.
I know the Stingers have tech specs. I'm not
sure if the Starlight Girls have tech specs.
No, I haven't seen them. Yeah. So that being
said, I mean, I liked it. I liked how the stylization
really worked for me. It really worked. I really
like this and you're right if if I saw it the
way that you were describing like, you know Kimber
and Stormer go off and have their own little
thing it'd be kind of cool to see Like, you know,
they're a little maybe like a maybe they'll lose
in the future or maybe talking about it Somebody
will be like, hey, that's great idea and they'll
run with it and they'll pitch it IDW and boom
boom boom Like do it's just like a little mini
series where they break off and go do their own
thing for like, you know Six issues or something,
you know, I can totally see that artists like
doing that In fact, I wouldn't mind seeing more
of her stuff. So it's kind of cool. I Yeah, go
ahead Finish your thought I can't remember my
thought now. I have a short attention span. I'm
like Kimber in that Nicole final thoughts on
Kimber's part of the story I want a spaceship
like that. Oh, yes, I agree. I want that spaceship
No spaceship for you Okay, IDW, you've got to
put that spaceship in somewhere with the lost
light. That would be awesome. That spaceship
is so small, it could probably fit inside the
lost light. That's what I'm saying. I think they
should hide it somewhere. It's just a little
toy or something. Yeah, somebody's got a toy
that looks like, you know, the gem jamming, gem
jammer. Space shuttle. It almost looks like someone
is a big Futurama fan. Yeah. Yeah, I can imagine
that. Very Planet Express. Bite my shiny metal.
Anyway. All right. Up next is Aja's part of the
story. And we kind of go back to the Gem Baby
style of art, which I like. This is cool. This
is fun. It's very Aja. Yeah, and Kimber has to
wear a giant furry pink thing So so yeah, we
open this one up with You know Kimber asking
Shayna what is all this fluffy pink stuff anyway
and just how is it gonna get us on the planet
of lost souls it's funny you should ask that
kimber because it's what you're going to wear
when we get there what um no way yes way you're
the you're you're the tallest it's the only thing
i can make to fit you on such short notice oh
gosh that's funny everyone get ready we're coming
up on the planet wait we can't be to the planet
of lost souls already no this is jedirox and
it's just part one of the plan and let me remind
you ladies what happens on jedirox planet stays
on jedirox planet and it's the shape of a bagel
bagel which is awesome exactly i saw this one
yes bagels for the win Don't you dare bring that
English muffin crap into this English muffins
are better. No, they're not two against one So
this is OJ's plan and OJ's story and she's got
this kick -ass guitar She's holding this kick
-ass guitar, and Jem is in a fish costume, Shayna's
in some sort of four -eyed monster costume, and
Kimber looks like one of the Manamana girls.
This thing is super hot. It looks super hot I
was sweating just looking at him like yeah, don't
play me Kimber. That's a legitimate gripe right
there Yeti Yeti I Bet Kelly's facepalming around
now going guys stop with the Yeti Yeti This is
not my fault Kelly. I did not do this. They did
this when we were reviewing the cartoon. This
is their fault Tell me. You got to tell me what
is wrong with Yetis. There's nothing wrong with
Yetis. There is nothing wrong with Yetis. But
you know what? I'd also think I'd like to think
that she's like the one that would say this is
as close to a Yeti you will get in this comic.
So don't ask anymore. No more Yetis. This is
it. This is the only one you'll ever get. More
bagels and more Yetis. So Aja has to fight in
a gladiatorial combat, and... And... Yeah, of
course. Well, you know, in the last one, you
know, she was, you know, Miss Mad Max over there.
Um... You know. Okay, I've got to... They said
that. They said this. Well... But when they announce
who she's gonna fight, all I could think of was
the new Ragnarok trailer. I'll get her from work!
Yeah, he's my friend from work! Let's ask her,
shall we? What do you say? Look at the two of
them, Jedda. Look at the hair. Well, one of them's
eating bagels. I don't know what Jedda's eating.
I have no idea what that is, but anyway. Roxy's
like, um, what's going on? I have no idea. I
just want to eat this bagel. Leave me alone.
See, this is why I like Roxy. She has a priority
straight, you know? And, um, yeah, Aja turns
into needles. What are ya, chicken? Nobody calls
me chicken. Oh no. So, Ajah is Needles and Jetta
is Marty McFly. So we get what the stakes are
and we get this knockdown drag -out fight between
Ajah and Jetta and it's just awesome. I love
this art style. What I love so far in this series
is We've talked about this before. Nicole and
I spent three and a half hours on Dark Cybertron.
When you're doing a comic with multiple artists,
there's a right way to do it and a wrong way
to do it. This is the right way to do it. Yeah.
They made it make sense for the story. They were
going to do multiple little stories, and they
made an in -comic reason for there to be a switch
between character. between characters The styles
of art and that that really does work because
then it becomes like oh I expect every single
one of these to be different and Like not only
was I expecting them to be different, but I was
curious to see what each of the styles were gonna
be like After reading just the opening so I was
like this is so good. They did a good job with
that Uh, and the little announcer's like, at
the risk of being beheaded for treason, the winner
by way of knockout is... Aja? Question mark.
Woo! Uh, Roxy and Jetta. I can't decide what's
worse, the physical pain or knowing stupid Aja
beat me. You did great, Aja is dumb. So dumb.
And the greatest thing about this story is the
sheer look of joy that comes across Roxy's face
after Aja asks them the question about the planet
of lost souls. She's like, yeah, Pazez has turned
into a monster. I'm going to tell him anyway.
I don't care. What's she going to do? You know.
Craziness. Yep. So, we end this one with Roxy
telling Aja what the actual secret is. We don't
see what that is yet, but Nicole, overall, what
were you thinking seeing as how this star is
one of your favorites here? I liked every moment
of it. The artwork, the characterization, just
the overall funness of it, and yeah, the expressions.
That they've drawn is amazing. I love it. And
I like that Roxy was kind of the hero. Like,
no, I'm going to stand up. I don't like what
she did to Storm. I really like that. It was
so, so awesome. I think the best panel out of
this was when... Okay, outside of the Back to
the Future reference, it's when... When Roxy
is like, you know, when, when, when I was just
like, what do you say Jetta? And you cut to the
two of them for the first time. Roxy's just laying
there. Just kind of like, that's how I look today
on the recliner. I'm like, I'm just going to
eat. Roxy has my style. She's in her, you know,
her gym clothes, eating a bagel, not caring for
the world. That's why I like this gal. Mm -hmm.
She's totally relaxed. She's like totally lounging
with the feet up on the chair and everything.
She's totally got the bed head going. Love it.
Yeah. Mm -hmm. That takes talent to have bed
head like that. Oh, yeah. Final thoughts on the
Aja story, Amy? The complete sequence of them
fighting it out, the slam, pow, whoosh, flip,
flip, flip, flip, flip. I mean, that was fun.
I loved that. That was probably my favorite page
because they totally go at it and it's just awesome.
This was like the perfect writing style. This
is the perfect style to write this whole scene.
I was masterfully executed. Fantastic. I was
really all for it. The style is so fun and playful
and there's so many different variations in the
line weight and it's just... Wow, it was just
so good. Very fun. And it worked. I mean, I could
imagine some younger girl now. I know this is
a style that's, that's, you know, that's out
there, but it just, it worked. It was so playful
and so fun and I just loved it. It was awesome.
Absolutely. So we move on to Shayna's part of
the story. And would this art be more trekkish
maybe? Yeah, I'd say so. It was very tricky.
A little bit. I mean, the only reason why I ask
is because look at Jim in the first panel here.
Well, I think it's kind of trickish because of
the collars that they have. It's very, you know,
that half above the collarbone, you know, not
exactly a turtleneck collar that, you know, most
Star Trek have, most Star Trek costumes have.
And we open this one with to rescue stormer and
get through the mystery surrounding the planet
of lost souls You have to be pure of heart and
have good intentions seriously It's sort of ingenious
if you ask me. I guess you're right I mean it
would be impossible to get through for some people
no matter what they did Exactly But we're not
some people we're gem of the holograms. We're
full of good intentions and pure of heart Ah,
could be our band name if we didn't already have
one, of course, except... What, me? Aja! Hey,
now, I'm perfectly pure in good intentions. Listen,
just because I'm the sassiest and sarcastiest,
I... can't even doesn't mean i'm not even not
as good as all of you i defy that planet not
to let me through oh yes that sounds just like
purity and good intentions hold on to your butts
here comes light speed i'll show you jerks pure
of heart i i love it i mean this is so fun I
don't know if IDW would ever let her, but honestly,
we've already known that Aja is Kelly's, you
know, spirit character pretty much. Aja needs
her own series. Aja and Craig need their own
romance series. That would be awesome. Well,
you never know. Maybe there will be a little
sequence. What did you just say? Aja and Craig?
Oh, for some reason, I was thinking Stormer and
Craig. I'm like, what? You're sick. No, Aja and
Craig. No. I haven't got much sleep lately. Give
me a break. I was just like, wait, that didn't
work. I get it. Gotcha. That could happen. Could
happen. They could have just like a two -issue
arc. That would be fun. Why not? Oh, you mean?
You mean the comic could happen. That's not what
I thought you meant because Nicole already, you
know, drew this down to incest. Oh, no, I didn't
even. That's not the direction I was thinking
that it went either. Yeah, because I got a chance
to mix up too many blue hairs. So this was a
while ago. And Amy's probably going to kill me
after we record this. This was a while ago. She
sent me some text message. That she meant to
say invest but she said incest and I'm like incest.
What are you talking about? Yeah Oh, please don't
even don't even I I can bring up I could bring
up the other text message you sent me You know,
the one that you were really embarrassed about.
The one that I was blushing for a couple hours
or so. Yeah, well, we'll have to tell Nicole
about that off air. Shhhhhh! Blah blah blah blah
blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah
blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah
blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah
blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah
blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah
blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah
blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah
blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah
blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah
blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah
blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah
blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah
blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah
blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah
blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah
blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah
blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah
blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah
blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah
blah blah blah My my little two -year -old has
an app that has like it's a superhero or it's
got like little animals that kind of fly through
an Environment you get to interact with it. One
of them is the space one. It's like this little
dog this little dog I can't remember what the
dog's name is but anyhow he goes through and
he Investigates this it's it's like a space scene
and one of them has a planet on there that farts
Go up and it just sits there goes and farts And
he is the kick out of it because he'll go up
to it and make it fart for a really long time
It just sit there and giggle. That's what it
reminds me of That's funny This planet reminds
me of that and then it's funny because afterwards
like it's all animated and stuff and after you
get you You get off the you know, you you stop
touching the planet then it's like it acts all
relieved. It's funny. It's really hilarious It
kind of reminds me of quintessa oh I can see
that yeah Just just in the way just the fact
that it's green and it's got this weird ring
Saturn type thing around it or yeah, whatever
they ask shana who has the psi powers uh you
know are you sensing anything in this mist yeah
a bit almost like it's sentient freedom is the
right of all sentient beings uh you sure we shouldn't
drop you off somewhere aja and pick you up back
up later so So they get through the planet aha
you all owe me apologies we apologize Aja You're
totally pure of heart and good intentions damn,
right? I Wonder how long it'll take to find her
takes well that didn't take long two seconds
They run out to eat meet each other and they
kiss Best kiss ever It'd be great taking it'd
be great if taking pizzazz down is this easy
no kidding So they get the story of how Stormer
got banished and why she got banished and the
fact that you know pizzazz ripped out her own
heart and Stormer has this ball and chain on
her boot and Yeah, that's where the heart is
and stormer has to cry to First they have to
cut it off her legs. I thought this was very
clever. Yes I really like this this storytelling
right here Yeah, this was because instead of
having to send them on a search party Better
than that is this it she put it somewhere where
nobody would ever find it again Well, they she
was kind of hoping that nobody would ever find
stormer again either So it it made it it was
simple yet oh okay that's cool because then we
don't have to go and you know there might not
you know as girls are like okay there's a few
of us that are doing this so you can only have
to find kind up with an in comic thing that would
make sense that we've already kind of put in
there aha i see what you did there yeah it really
worked i liked that and i was just like i could
take off and nuke it from space no all right
all right geez nobody will ever let me nuke anything
And then Shayna says, I think it wants Stormer's
tears, her regrets. Her regrets, yes. That happens
and the heart is freed, but then it turns to
ash. No, no, no, no, no. I like that Stormer's
like, it's beautiful. And then it just. I was
like. No heart for you. No heart for you. I was
like, oh man, that stinks. Wow. But it's a good
conflict because now they have to figure out,
they have to make another heart. How do they
do that? So this one, I get it's an overarching
story and it's, it's what, you know, it's supposed
to be Shayna's part of the story, but is it just
me or did Shayna kind of not really have a starring
role here? Am I wrong I'm probably wrong in saying
that I mean, yeah, she did but it Because she's
the one that figured out what the heart was Yeah,
and she's the one that figured out she's the
one that with the special power in this one.
Yeah, that's true Yeah, she's the one that comforts
a Stormer when she gets back because Shane is
the Comforter of the group. That's for sure.
And yeah, I'd say I'd say she had a major role
in it Yeah, cuz if not, they would have had to
search around to see if they can find the heart.
Yeah, that's true You know, it totally worked
for me. I was like, yeah, that's that's totally
Shayna's arc because she was invaluable to making
that work Maybe I just read it too fast folks.
I don't know. Um, you know, I should just wanted
to blow it up man. Yeah I just wants to blow
everything up. I was you just wants to She did
great in the last one because you had to beat
up somebody. It was a challenge and she was great.
That was her forte. But this one is a little
less. She had it was Shayna, so it had to be
a little more. OK, let's just think about this
for a minute and and a little more kind of, hey,
more emotional and more weighted. And you had
to kind of think about what was going on. So
it had a little bit slower pace on it in that
sense. But that was good, though, because, you
know, the heart. had to be created. Or it had
to be, you know, cried on. Nicole, final thoughts
on the Shayna story? I thought it was very sweet.
I really liked it a lot. So cute. I like that
they gave Shayna a special power. Like she's
a superhero. I like it. She's got the psychic
abilities. I like it a lot. Absolutely. So the
final story here is Jem's story, and, um, uh,
you know, how are we supposed to put it back
in pizzazz if it turned to ash, and Jem's like,
I might have to have an idea. We need to put
on a show, and Ajo, we need everyone to hear
it. No offense, Jay, but I don't think now is
the time for a show for music. And then, you
know, wrong, Aja, you know, music helps everybody,
and she's right, it does. You know, maybe it
can even save the soul. So, I'm loving this.
I think this is great. So fun. Yeah. So they
get ready to put on the show and... Pizzazz hears
this and she's like you've got to be kidding
me. They think they can sing here Look at pizzazz.
She is possessed. I mean Well, she has no heart.
So yeah possessed possessed pizzazz I like it.
I think it's cool arrest them arrest all of them
and then Jim gives the microphone to stormer
and this kind of you know, gives Pizzazz a pause.
This is, I think, the only time in the entire
series of Jim that Stormer has actually sung
anything. I mean... No, no, she's done a couple
of other things. Yeah, she's sung. Yeah. You're
forgetting your stories, man. Yeah. Well, it's
been two years, so... This is just this year.
but that's why we're here to keep you on track
yeah exactly so you know they sing the song she
gets her heart back and it worked and yeah what
do we think of this Nicole that she gets her
oh so are you talking about the complete ending
oh well before we get to the girls okay I thought
it was really cute that Stormer was the one that
was able to bring Pizzazz back to her quote -unquote
normalcy, I guess. Because in the end, it's kind
of like the Tin Man. You had your heart all along.
I kind of liked that. It was really sweet. It
was really sweet. Amy? I agree. I think it was
like that was kind of they made the music but
it was Stormer that needed to help out to make
that work and so that that worked that I thought
that was really good so yay she saved they saved
the day and then we cut back to holograms in
real life and Kimber's yes greatest comic book
of all time and um yeah the biggest issue that
comes out of this is that Jerrica feels that
they don't know anything about her that she felt
left out even though it was Jim the cool thing
here is the shot of all the starlight girls before
before Bonnie runs in to ask them What I liked
about it is though again Shana comes in and tells
her I really loved the comforting spirit of Shana,
you know She's like you were involved. You got
to remember you are Jim, you know, even though
it's a persona you are her you're the You're
the one that they look up to even though you
hold the secret behind it. That is you and I
really thought You know what? That's really comforting
because yeah, I probably would have felt the
same. Like Jerika's really involved with these
girls, but they're highlighting Jim. And so I
really thought that was really sweet of Shayna
to, to pull that through. And we get who wrote
which parts of the story, which is fun. And of
course Ashley wrote the Aja story, which makes
a lot of sense. Uh, Chrissy wrote the Jim story.
Bonnie and You know so they you know they say
oh you all did it all on your own and yep, we
sure did and You know like like Nicole already
said about about Shana and Jerrica and Jerica's
like it's no big deal the end question mark question
mark Yeah, this was such a good comic. I thought
it was a lot of fun. Yeah, it was a lot of fun.
It was a great idea for an annual. This was a
really good idea. Yeah. Absolutely. Absolutely,
it was. Also in the back of this, we get each
of the artists' pages of how they went about
creating the individual art styles. I think that's
great. You know, we got Gisele Lagase's, and
we got MJ Burroughs, and... and Victoria Roboto
for Aja and the other ones for Jim and Shayna.
I thought that was super cool that they did that.
That they added those in the back. It was really
nice to see how the process goes. Like, you know,
how they sketched in there. Like, just the different
styles. Like, you know, MJ Barros. Like, just
each one of them. You see the difference. Like,
in some of them there was... you know just the
pencils and they added the ink and then one the
pencils were a little more um like a little less
developed yeah like victoria's hers were you
know quite literally just like you know circles
and and they kind of like how she roughly put
it together until she actually inked it and get
it got it all got all together just each one
of them were just so unique and interesting to
see how they got around and made that work so
the composition behind it the thought process
from one stage to the next stage. It was really
cool to see that. Absolutely. Really glad that
they put that in there. I know this is going
to be hard, Amy, but what would you rate zero
to five for the annual? Oh, zero to five. Can
I give it a four and a half? Absolutely. Yeah,
that's half points in there. I thought it was
really great. The thought process behind how
do we incorporate, you know, three different,
four different artists doing all of these different
styles, that seemed to really, really mesh well.
I liked the fact that it had an in -reason comic,
in the comic reason for being that way. The fact
that it was written the way that it was, it like...
It was written as if a young girl had written
it, and we were like, hey, we're like the holograms.
We're kind of in their audience section, getting
the chance to read the comic for the first time,
just like they are. And then afterwards having
a conversation about, hey, guys, you did this.
And the fact that they each put characterizations
of each of the characters in this little story
that they did, it really worked for me. I really
liked it. As an annual, it's not something that,
I mean, some people will pick it up, some people
won't. but as like an extra little story tale
type of thing that you would pick up in addition
to the comic. I thought it was a really good
one. That's one thing that they did with the
annuals and the specials and the holiday issues
and things like that with the series is one thing
Kelly did. She told individual stories with all
the special issues and annuals and things like
that. But at some point, whether it's at the
beginning or the end of the annual, it ties back
into whichever characters, you know, personality
or whatever you know leading back into the series
which is great Nicole rating for this one I'm
gonna echo Amy four and a half it was tons of
fun loved it loved all the different act I think
I the reason why I'm knocking down a half a point
because I thought I was kind of confused like
with Amy the first time I read it through like
wow they're kind of skipping around a little
bit and it even though they explained it It finally
came together at the end, which was really good
Yeah, four and a half saw around It was just
so so good It's a solid issue. It really is.
Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah absolutely We are gonna take
a quick break and we're gonna come back before
you break before you break I just want to say
something because we mentioned that we weren't
sure when the the starlight girls were in in
the comics I've been flipping through between
They've actually been around since issue 2 they
were a dark jam They've been they've been threw
out So I'm not like I said, I'm trying they have
but what I'm saying is the time you know earlier
in the podcast what I was meaning was they were
not there all of the time like they were there
all the time but yeah absolutely they have to
be there it's part of the you know it's part
of the franchise it's part of the family so we're
gonna take a quick break Then we're going to
come back with the truly outrageous arc, the
final arc of Jamming the Holograms from IDW Publishing,
Kelly Thompson, all that good stuff. We will
be back after this. Alright folks, we are back
here on the pull bag in Showtime Synergy to kick
off the Truly Outrageous arc because the Misfits
are in Hawaii. Misfits in Hawaii! Hawaii! In
a Hawaiian song! Issue 24 kicks this off as Truly
Outrageous Part 1, written obviously by Kelly
Thompson. Artist on these final three issues
is Giselle Legase. Callers by M. Victoria Roboto,
letters by Sean Lee, edits by Sarah Gaydos, publisher
Ted Adams. We get the previously page with Jem
and the Stingers and riots and the holograms
and all of that. We get, you know, Rhea finding
out the secret and having to keep the secret.
We get the fact that, you know, Shayna comes
back. There is a huge cast in these final three
issues. You got Gem and the Holograms, you got
the Misfits, you got Clash, you got Fox, Rio,
you got Stingers, and then the Stingers and Rare
as well. We open with the Holograms playing their
new song with all of them there together. Shayna
is now on bass instead of drums So that's An
interesting dynamic to add and we knew this because
this is kind of what happened in the series in
the cartoon series Yeah, Shayna went from the
drums to the guitar which again, you know Kelly's
attention to detail amazing, you know being able
to switch that up In case anyone has not read
any of the other gem things before, we get little
character snippets of Gem, Aja, Shayna, Kimber,
and Rhea. I just love the images here that Giselle
does of all of them playing together. I think
that's just so cool. We get Aja and Shayna talking
for a bit, and you know... They're talking about
Kimber and Stormer and they mentioned the fact
of the camera the cameras and the Reality show
and all that so that ties back into the Misfits
arc I was not you know not thinking Kelly wouldn't
obviously tie all that together because she does
and it's it's great and So we get Aja and Shayna
talking about Kimber and Stormer and how Shayna
says well she can't keep excluding Stormer and
you know she does have a legit complaint you
know the cameras and verily come with Stormer
now that she's part of the reality TV show so
as I mentioned a while ago that you know about
Kelly tying everything back in I think it's really
good I think it's really fun You know, so they're
they're in Hawaii and they have this great grandiose
place and Then the drama begins there's always
drama You should begins with Kimber oh No, this
this time it isn't Kimber. It's She starts the
drama. Well, yes, but They get over that quickly
because somebody brings her a fruity umbrella
drink. Aja brings her a fruity umbrella drink.
Which spurs the whole picture taking, which then
again they find and then that's what they found
out. Yeah, stingers. Yay, you're right next door.
Woo. Yup. Dumb holograms. I'll show you dumb,
you little... Kimber. Be careful, Kimber. You're
starting to channel your inner Aja. Oh, just
wait. I mean, Aja and Storm are later. Wow. Mm
-hmm. Mm -hmm. So they have this whole thing.
Jim and Riot have a thing between them, which
I like it. I think it's interesting. But you
know. I think her dumping him, it's like, you
know, he's like, but that's never happened before.
And it makes in Rapture even say that later.
You know, nobody dumps Riot. Yeah, it was always
the first time. I love the art here. Seeing a
misfit skull across Shayna's little thought bubble
there is a little strange, but I like it. She
learns from the best. Yep. So we have an all
-out kind of band or across this little hedge
thing, which I think is really really cool It's
mostly minks and rapture talking between the
holograms and all that and right. It's just kind
of standing there like Moping he's moping Moping
over gem. Oh, I think it's kind of cute I think
the best scene comes next when the doorbell rings.
Like I said, Minx and Rapture, that's never happened
ever. Nobody dumps Riot, darling. Nobody. And
they get the cursing back and forth, and you
see off the right -hand side gems, sigh, what
a mess. Ding -dong. Aloha! That's my favorite
panel of this issue. And not only that is it
it looks just as awkward as if they were really
doing it in real life Is awesome like their hands
are in different poses and like, you know Anthony's
foot's up on the right hand side Totally could
see people doing this and that's what made it
so funny, you know what it reminds me of Imagine
now I don't know which one I don't know whether
Rio would be the leader or Craig, but if you
took Three's Company and made it all men instead
of a guy and two girls, it reminds me... I don't
know if Craig or Rio would be Jack Tripper, but
that's what this reminds me of, is a scene from
Three's Company. Oh, that would be good, yeah.
Yeah, nice. How long did it... You guys have
to practice that. Six hours? Yeah, six hours.
Sounds about right. I love these guys. These
guys are awesome. The dialogue was perfect. Yeah,
it really, really was. And look who we found
at the airport. Stormer! I think she looks so
adorable with her glasses. Very, very chic. Yeah.
She looks like she's been jet setting for a while
And did you notice the the lettering that Sean
did for her when they all say stormer I love
it. Yeah, that's perfect Very very awesome. And
of course Kimber is happy to see her but you
know, they're all kind of you know They talk
about the luau actually I thought there was gonna
be more of a Hesitation towards stormer being
there now that she's there actually but that
might come later And real is like anybody seen
Jerrica Yeah, the awkward part is the fact that
there's gonna be a conversation between Rio and
Jerrica and Yeah, kind of know that it's gonna
happen. Yeah, you know the the miss or not the
miss it's There's gonna be a conversation and
so it's like, uh Yeah, it's like this this little
simmering. Hey, there's a issue going on here
and it's kind of been building to this point
So it was it it it wasn't forced. It felt like
yeah, this this makes sense. Yeah Yeah, cuz the
panel here when they're walking away real looks
really really dejected and You know Aja tries
to catch up to Jim and pulls her hand back Jim
Jim wait up you know um you know it's time i'm
gonna tell him you heard me azja oh god yeah
absolutely so so they all want food and we get
to possess wow not possess um minx and rapture
And they're trying to figure out how they can
ruin the holograms' vacation. We want to get
back at them. They made us mad, so... And that
is a TV crew hiding in our hedges. Yeah, that's
what I thought. And the TV crew from The Misfits
is there. Oh boy. Somehow they got a hold of...
They know we're... Well, yeah, they followed
Stormer, probably, most likely. They found a
way. Found a way. Where there's a will there's
a way yep So they are going to set up Kimber
and Stormer not very well But you know we get
back to gem and Rio. He's like through here.
Yes, and there's nobody in here hold on and She
switches over it's it's complicated and we have
What I've been waiting for for over 30 years.
Waiting for this moment. I don't care if it turns
bad because we know it does after reading this.
I don't care. He finally friggin knows. Like,
I get it. Christie, when they were doing the
show, they didn't really have time to work out
how to tell Rio in the show. I understand that.
But. after 30 plus 32 years of waiting for Rio
to find out that Jerrica is Gem and vice versa.
Thank you Kelly so much because that was the
one thing I was really really hesitant about
even reading this final arc because I was like
oh no if they don't if they don't reveal the
secret to Rio We'll be waiting another 30 years,
right? I'm very happy about this. I was very
happy about it. And you know, I'm very happy
with the true to life consequences of her telling
him agree. Absolutely. Cause you can't a secret
this big. Especially with him bringing up the
fact that Jim was all over the tabloids with
riot and everything else and whatever You can't
help but Rio having a negative reaction to this
at all. I Mean that's that's kind of like somebody
telling you that you need to leave their house
so that they can help somebody anyway keep my
personal life out of podcasting but anyway so
we get this really down -to -earth truth honesty
conversation and she shows him you know Showtime
synergy I think Giselle's art here is great the
panel where she switches and you've got Rio in
this kind of like little pop -up video Circle
in the bottom right hand corner with the question
mark exclamation point question mark. I think
that is so cool It was good it was I agree it
was perfect and that's where this issue ends
with you know the reveal so overall Nicole Truly
outrageous part one. What were you thinking?
I think it had some really good bits to it. I
felt like, I don't know, I felt like the stinger
part should have been in the next issue. So that
was, it was just kind of, I don't know, I understand
why they did it. I'm gonna give this a three
and a half. I really. Because I really like the
ending I really like that Jim finally told Rio
been waiting for that actually I'm gonna give
it a fork just because of that Because I've been
waiting for this since I was a young kid, okay
You know Ria's got to find out and this Rio's
not a douchebag. So So yeah, I'll give it a four
Sorry Kelly she still has issues from you know
her human boyfriend cyclones. I like this Rio
mostly. I meant the other. You still have issues
with the other cartoon. Oh, come on. He's a douchebag
twat. OK, he is. Don't even make me go off on
Rio. Rio is horrible, just absolutely horrible.
Amy, final thoughts on truly outrageous part
one. Absolutely fantastic. I loved it. I'm really
glad that we finally get this moment where they
can talk about this and they actually, you know,
have this conversation. It's a really tough and
it's very awkward, but it is like, Oh, Oh, when
I, cause I, I literally only read this like about
a 24 hours ago. So I did not know exactly what
was going to be in this. I just thought, Oh,
last three issues. And quite literally at this
point, I was like, Oh, they're going to do it.
They're going to, they're going to do it. Oh
my gosh. They're totally going to do it. And
I was like, okay. It was, that was really, really
awkward. And especially how it starts up in the
next issue and you're like, Oh my gosh. I was
like, yeah, that makes totally set. It totally
makes sense. Um, but yeah, this, this was a really
great moment. I really, really glad that they
finally put this in here and I didn't, it wasn't
bothered at all by the stingers. I think it was
a great cause they need to put the conflict in
there right away. And it makes complete and total
sense. So, yeah, this was a really packed issue,
and I'm going to give it a four and a half. I'm
glad it was the stingers in Hawaii next to one
of them instead of the misfits, because that
would have just felt like a repeat. Yeah earlier
battles. Yeah. Yeah Well, and the thing is is
that having the camera crew kind of followed?
Stormer was really good because the stormer is
involved. Yeah, the Misfits are Connected to
the holograms one way or the one way or another
they they have their moments where they're gonna
be like against each other but like You they're
not constantly being there. I mean the fact that
you've got another band like the You know the
stingers it would make sense that they would
follow the holograms specifically because riot
wants to be around jem and wants to cause problems
and wants to To be there to okay because she
already broke up with him So it makes sense to
me on a kind of really subplot kind of you know
thinking about it like that he would do that
Especially since the next issue we get a little
moment between him and jerrica it just It's such
a good thing because you know, he's gonna push
boundaries and stuff like that And so it made
sense that the stingers would be the ones to
be there and you really understand that a whole
lot more when you get to the next issue But I
mean they kind of gem kind of called him out
a little bit on it and this one But it was you
really kind of see the building of his character
in the next issue for sure But still though,
I mean it was just it was such a great I liked
it. I really liked what was going on here What
would you rate 24, Amy? Definitely a four and
a half. I mean, it's not perfect, but like, yeah,
four and a half, close to five. I mean, like
this is a really strong issue. Four and a half's
all around. I mean, this to me, like I said,
it makes more sense that the Stingers are here
than the Misfits because the Stingers and the
Holograms have always had a more personal rivalry
than a professional one. The Stingers are already
set professionally. I mean, they're already...
and Gem and the Holograms are still kind of,
they're not a young band, they still kind of
are, but they're not world famous yet. They've
done a lot of famous shows throughout the entire
comic run, but if you look at all three bands,
Gem and the Holograms, the Misfits, and the Stingers,
the Misfits and the Stingers are more popular
than... Gemini holograms at this point and the
misfits versus the holograms. It's more a professional
thing. It's more of They suck at singing. Oh
my god. They're horrible Stormer. Why are you
blah this that the other thing? So, you know
I think it does make more sense that the singers
are here and like you said Amy they have to set
up the the stingers it has to make sense. I mean,
yeah, not just I mean, they have they have three
bands to rotate with. So, I mean, when the show
actually did, you know, the Misfits in Hawaii,
that one they didn't have. They hadn't introduced
the Stingers yet. And that was something that
I'm really glad that that, you know, Kelly came
right out and introduced them before this arc
hit so that they could, you know, challenge kind
of mix it up a little bit for one, but for two.
we can have instead of the misfits always being
the bad guys, it can be other things and not
necessarily bad guys because they're not really
bad. They're just drawn that way. So yeah, they're
the antagonists. That sounds better because they're
not bad. They're just the antagonists. They're
the, you know, the ones that are helping to cause
conflict. So, I mean, the fact that they have
that and we like. Lot of what's going on especially
relationship wise with what you know how things
are complicated with Jem and her Conflict and
then of course adding Rio to that conflict I
mean, it's just like it makes sense that they
would be the ones that would be at Hawaii Absolutely
Issue 25 opens with the luau Yeah, I bet this
whole arc wanted to make you go back to Hawaii
for a vacation, huh Nicole? Oh, who doesn't want
to go back to Hawaii? The luau was very accurate,
that they did a good job with that. I've been
to Hawaii as well, so luaus are awesome and that
one, what they do is, yes, it's good. They even
included poi. I don't know why people like poi.
I didn't like poi either. I don't get it. It's
a staple in Hawaii. That's like the only thing
I can say bad about Hawaii is poi. I love Rey
in there. Although, what's wrong? I feel like
a seventh wheel. You're all paired off. Oh man,
have I been there. Don't worry. Besides, now
that you're bandmates with Aja and Kimber, you'll
realize how futile it is to try to keep up. Right,
Aja? And Aja is worried about Jerrica and...
Distraction, distraction. It's still the fallout
of Shayna not being there, is that Aja's having
to... Yeah, absolutely. I don't blame that hat.
Yeah. You know, and I love the panel between
the two of them. Shay, don't go away again. I
can't handle being the one that holds us together.
I'm not good at it. I just absolutely love that.
And I love the final panel before we go to Jem
and Rio. I love you, Aja. Okay, that's enough.
You're embarrassing me. You started it. Did not.
Shut up. I just love that. It's so cool. So we
go back to Jem and Rio and the Jerry Springer
show. Blah, blah. Blah, blah, blah. She's not
pregnant. No, but they're having relationship
issues, so here they go. Next best thing. I want
to make a really dirty joke, but I'm not going
to. Some of the later years of Jerry, that's
all I'll say. Oh my god Some of the too hot for
TV years Tell us that story later, you'll tell
us that story later We're not airing that there's
no way you'll never live that down. All right
Rios like I don't even know what I'm seeing.
It's me Jericho even under the illusion. It's
always been me And he just can't handle, you
know, you know, looking at Jim as she's telling
him, you know, as I got to know you, as I fell
in love with you, it weighed heavily on me. I
wanted to tell you the truth, but everything
just seemed to get so complicated. His response,
in love with me, Jim has been dating that adult
riot. Yeah, I loved the wording of that. That's
awesome. Yep, absolutely and In effect, you know,
she's been cheating on him and oh not really
stop bring Jerrica back make it go away and We
get it. I like how he says it calls it he calls
it it Yep Wow And he asks, you know, what is
synergy? And he says to Jerrica, maybe some,
you know, she says, Rio, please don't look at
me like that. I'm sorry I lied. Can you at least
understand that I did it to protect myself and
my family? Maybe someday, for now, I need to
know everything. Who or what is synergy? Okay,
synergy I need you. Let Rio see you, please.
And, uh, Rio kind of freaks out a little. What
in the hell is happening? So you're like, it's
a computer -generated AI. Please don't shoot
me. That would be kind of shocking. I actually
understand where Rio is coming from right now.
I mean, he's putting all the pieces together
like wits in the world. And then he got this
on top of it, too. I don't blame him. Plus you
got to remember Rio in the in the comic is a
reporter. So true. I'll come into play later.
So Too much poi and luau and poi I won't eat
for a week It's if you've ever had it's like
a sticky paste that really has no flavor It's
tasty. I agree. Basically what you're saying
is that kindergarten paste has more taste. Oh,
yeah What what your poet you didn't know it?
That's right Just keep wheeling and dealing over
here. All right, so he'll be here all week people
Apparently skip scared. That's yeah, skip scare
ship over there. Yeah You get ship if I get trip.
Oh god, now I've got all of his stupid lines
in my head. Damn it! Get out of my head, Wheelie.
Damn it, Spada. Alright, so, Rhea meets the...
Oh, blame it on Spada now, eh? Well, hey, it's
his favorite character, so, you know. Rhea meets
the film crew. What do we think of this, Amy?
The sequence? Well, yeah. With the news reporters
cornering her. Yes, yes, yes. It was good. You
know, if they were going to go after anybody,
it would have to be Raya because Raya is. The
newest member, and actually, they don't all know
this, but they will find out later that she knows
and she'll let them know that she knows and.
They don't know at this point, so... If that
isn't confusing yet, but... Yeah, they basically
try to briber. They're like, we know that Gemini
Holograms are hiding a big secret and that you
might be able to tell us what it is. We can make
it worth your while, Rhea. I promise you. So,
you know... Bribery, yay! Yeah. Damn paparazzi.
So so far yes, I like it. It's it's really good.
I'm liking the fact that Yeah, that they the
the Holograms and everybody go out to dinner
gem well Jerrica and Rio have the conversation
that degrades really quick, but it's a very long
one obviously because the next thing we see is
them returning home and Rio storms out and it
gets It's like, wow, that was must've been really
intense. But I love, I love the beginning part
of this. When Stormer looks and sees the two
cars, did I somehow order two cars? And then
Rio walks out, gets into the white car and has
the guy drive off. Yep. Oh no. Yep. Not good.
The ball has dropped and big bomb just went.
I love it when Tony and Craig are around. I love
it because, you know, the next panel we get,
you think they broke up. I mean, Rio was definitely
worried that she was going to break up with him,
but you're going to seem like the kind of person
that would drag you out to Maui just to break
up with you. Definitely not. Plus Rio's not an
angry guy. If they broke up, wouldn't he just
be sad? Why would he be pissed? Unless she did
drag him out to Maui to break up with him No
way, I just yes, that's what I love I I love
when they do the three character shot and everybody
says the same thing. I think that's so cool You
know so Craig and Tony walk off and minks and
rapture kind of see this as an idea to Set up
Kimber and Stormer and this is where the more
of the conniving comes in with them The next
conflict yeah, then the next conflict so we get
the conversation You know Jerrica telling them
what happened and that Rio was really pissed
and and Okay, that's about all the comforting
I can handle right now Going outside to be alone,
Jera, come on, she didn't mean it that way. I
didn't, I'm sorry. And... Raya finds a note and
has Kimber's name on it and this is where the
setup comes and Kimber goes off to meet Stormer
and... Then we have Jerika and Riot. Oh boy,
Riot. Can't decide who is a bigger douchebag
cartoon riot or comic riot because comic riot
pretty much told Jim to dump The you know because
he doesn't know at the time this is back in the
stingers arc He pretty much told her to dump
whoever she was seeing and date him Well, the
thing is we knew more about right in the cartoons.
I mean he hasn't really been in a whole lot The
comics so we don't know his backstory yet. If
they're even going to use the same backstory
I don't know. I'm a sucker. I have fallen for
riot. I always have I Don't know. He's got the
charm oxy and riot. I can kind of see it. Oh
Bad she would destroy him So he hops over the
little hedge wall there and you know We should
date Jerrick. It would drive our exes crazy And
she's just shocked at that Hey be true though
He's just telling the truth it would it's kind
of hard to tell the truth when Jerica's ex is
also supposedly dating Jim I don't know about
anybody else, but if I was Rio, I'm kind of hoping
that it doesn't happen where she does it just
to make him jealous. I know that cartoon gem
might do that, but I would not. I would not go
back to a girl that would do that just to make
me jealous. I mean, if it was a guy, it was me.
So I kind of hope that it doesn't happen. You
know, maybe somebody else would do that, but
not Jim and not Jerrica. I think too risky because
not not in these days. It might have in the 80s,
but people nowadays are just, you know, that's
a dysfunctional relationship. I mean, it's dysfunctional
and enough as it is. I don't know if adding the
jealousy factor would ever bring it to a point
where they could get back together and. I'm really
glad, at least so far, that I see. It doesn't
seem that Kelly is playing that card. So crossing
my fingers that it doesn't. Well, you look at
Jerika's, you look at the panel where he says
that, where it would drive our exes wild if we
dated. You look at Jerika's reaction. She's just
kind of like, got this shock on her face, and
she's got these three exclamation points coming
out of her speech bubble. So yeah, that's not,
I seriously doubt that's going to happen. Thank
God. Yeah. I would not. I would be a little frowny
if I saw that happening. Yeah. So Kimber is out
in the middle of nowhere and she sees the picnic
and but where's Stormer and and you know she
texts her and the blanket kind of blows off in
the wind and this causes Kimber to stand too
close to the edge of the cliff and it kind of
gives way. the Stormer shows up back at the house
and then they've realized that Kimber is missing
and and that Stormer didn't leave a note and
all of this and Stormer tries to call Kimber
and it just rings and rings and rings and we
see that Kimber is having a hot time in Hawaii
See what you did That's what it says That's what
it says at the bottom of the thing because she's
lying next to a pool of lava supposedly Issue
25 the middle issue of the arc absolutely love
it. I think the story is progressing nicely I
love how Kelly creates conflict and continues
to have the conflict going without needing to
sum it up really fast or put in, you know, tiny
loose ends up really quickly. I think that's
great. We'll talk about it more in the final
issue, but you know, between Gem and the Holograms
and the Stingers and all of that going on with
Riot and Jerika and... Rio and all that and Jim
it's just this middle issue was so good. I like
this issue a lot Absolutely issue 25, um, I'm
probably give it a four Really did enjoy it I'm
loving the art in this in this arc. I think this
art is just so so good. Gisela Gase is doing
an amazing job with the art on this. Amy, what
about you? I think four is a really good one.
Yeah, that that's I really I'm really enjoying
what they've got here. I really know. I like
what they're going. I like really how the art
is, how everything is just flowing. And again,
just the first one really set it all up. The
second one does not disappoint. So It's a very
solid second issue. Absolutely. Nicole? I'm also
going to give it a four. I really, really enjoyed
this issue. I love that Rio caused the conflicts.
You have the other two stingers causing conflicts.
I like that they got the stingers back. I really
do. I like the third band. And I just love how
you see the cuteness of Stormur and Kimber. Just
think that's so cute. And then of course, you
know, you could You could see where it's gonna
go. So yeah Yeah So we get into issue 26 We get
the previously page we get the cast and we pick
up, you know, why is everything so hurdy and
All right. I fell off the cliff. Yeah, that's
not good So Kimber's leg is hurting and she realizes
she's next to a pool of lava Am I hallucinating
or what? So we go back to the search party here
between Aja and Stormer and all of that. And
Aja's like, I'm gonna call Kiani. Who cares about
your dumb charity show right now, Aja? Mary,
that's not what she's doing. Right, of course
not. She's a local. She's I'm gonna ask her for
ideas of places to look for Kimber you know,
so we get that and Aja walks away and We get
let's see here we get Keani coming in and saying,
you know we should split up into groups and some
of you come with me and the rest of you stay
here and and Rhea's like, oh my god, I know who
did this, and she runs off, and Rhea, what the
hell? Where is Kimber? We love Kimber Benton,
we would never, sorry, I cannot, it's too hard
to pretend to love Kimber. And this is the panel,
this next panel is what I was talking about.
I'm going to murder, whoa. Start talking or we
let Stormer and Aja have their way with you.
My guess is you're not going to look so pretty
when it's done. Yeah, I fought Aja before, she
bites. I love that panel, I love that panel.
Yeah, that is by far the best panel of this,
at least the early part of this issue. That is
so awesome. So... They tell them what happened
and where where she is and where they are and
they go out and they look and they see the picnic
and because they actually drag minks and rapture
with them and Stormer finds her phone and they
see her down at the bottom of the cliff and Nobody
has cell reception, which is convenient for the
plot. Actually, it's pretty common in Hawaii.
Yeah Yeah, yeah, it's pretty common It's kind
of like, California. It's a nice place to visit,
but you wouldn't want to live there Oh, I would
love to live in Hawaii if I could afford it That's
my degree Yeah, Hawaii, but I'm not gonna spend
eight dollars in milk True So we get the panel
where you know Kiani's like okay Shane I need
you and Raya to drive down to the mountain a
Bit till you have a signal when you can get a
signal call for an ambulance. Tell them to come
here What are you going to do? Aja and I are
gonna go down and get her pull out the ropes
Tie it off and scale down the mountain. I love
it. I like that. It shows their their ventris
side I like that it's not only just adventurous.
Yeah, it's not just adventurous, but like very
proactive to. Yeah. Hey, we see a problem. Let's
conquer it. You know, that's that's very much
Aja. And it makes sense that it would be like,
you know, the the friend as well would be like,
yeah, because like, you know, that would probably
be the reason why they were their friends is
because they probably met while Aja was doing
something. So, yeah, makes work. Well, we already
know that it's for that, too. But like the the
music initiative type thing that they're they're
doing the charity for but right that's why they
would you know mesh so quickly is because you
know absolutely works absolutely Kimber does
get saved we go to a hospital scene and you know
The nurse comes in, oh no, you all must leave.
This is far too many visitors. Her doctor is
coming soon to sign off on her release. Out,
all of you, out. Okay, just give us a minute.
You know, they all kind of talk and Shana gives
a speech and Shana says... I ever since I got
back I've been feeling kind of separated from
you guys I've been confused about my feelings
over you replacing me And I know I told you to
I guess I just didn't realize how I feel about
it And I don't know it's just creating this distance
between us and now You know so we get that and
they all make up and hug and be careful of my
ouches guys this is where Rhea comes in and tells
them that she knows Jerrica is Jim and she's
gonna keep the secret and that she's part of
the family now and Rhea's like talking about
we get to a point where she's talking about the
stingers and It's the kind of thing they like
to do sounds just like them really but now I
don't know what to do how to get rid of TV people
She basically comes out and says that, you know,
they've she's pretty sure that the the stingers
have clued this news group into they have a secret.
And she's like, I didn't tell the secret. They
think they know a secret, but they really don't
know that there's a secret. My guess is it's,
you know, so it's like with this thing that are
like, well, they approached me. they said they
knew a secret i know that rapture and minks probably
told them there was a secret when they don't
really know that there's a secret so now what
do we do to get them off your trail and so derrick
it says well it may not be the secret they came
looking for the band they want to dirt on but
I think we can give them something juicy and
get some much -needed payback with mix and Rapture
too and a great great I love it when Jericho
goes chaotic evil This is a time when when actually
having a hologram system actually kind of works
in your favor just saying Absolutely I'm loving
this and then we get Lindsey again So there's
that. Yeah, because they go back to their apartment.
Yeah, where the two stingers are sitting, having
coffee or just chilling, going, yes, we're awesome
villains and we did this and yeah, yeah. And
then they have the TV on and they get the Lindsay's
getting an exclusive break where Rapture. No.
Yeah. Rapture goes off and says all these negative
things about minks and they're sitting there
listening to it. And you know that it's Gem,
well, it's the hologram system. Yeah, it's totally
totally her. Yeah, and that causes a little problem
with the two of them, which is comedic gold.
I mean, for starters, she's just a terrible musician
that doesn't even begin to deal with her personality.
Such a nightmare. And she's always saying words
wrong. It's like you're a world traveler. Learn
American already, and she thinks she is so smart
at... Minx, no! I would never! It's got to be
fake! You know I adore you! Eep. And then...
You got the two of them running after each other.
This was perfect Minx versus Rapture. I could
totally see this happening in the show, even
though it's not the show. It just, it's their
characters to a T. So this... This. This solved
to that conflict was just spot on. I thought
it was fantastic and hilarious, and it really
reminded me of the show. I mean, without being
too like off because it fits the modern tale
as well. But still, it was so great to see this.
I was just like total win. Out of the absolute
get -go. I mean, yeah, I know we're getting we're
wrapping down to the we're winding down to the
end but still it just it hit that beat and I
was just sitting here going yes Nicole that you
want just the issue or just the Just this part
with the Minx and Rapture and all that. Oh my
gosh, I just love this so much. I love that because
I was wondering where they were gonna go when
they're like, what's Jerika's plan? And you turn
to it and you're like, you know, Rapture wouldn't
say that. I mean, they basically have each other,
you know? I was just like, this is awesome. And
I'm not good with my German, but I know that's
not good. Yeah, I really like this I thought
was fun Absolutely love that and we go back to
the the the initiate con the initiative concert
and they're performing their new track and what
I loved what I noticed about this this first
part if you look in the background there the
gem in the holograms logo Very cartoon accurate.
Oh, yes Like, look, I fully understand that the
main logo that's on every issue of the comic
is very Cartoon Accurate, but having it here
with the band and the way that it looks, it's...
I'm gonna say flat, but I don't mean it in a...
Negative way like think of matte versus glossy
in photos It is a very matte kind of look to
the logo just like it popped right out of the
old cartoon show And it's absolutely awesome.
I love the art on the hollow gem of the holograms.
I think it's so great Favorite panel is the end
shot here of the two of them not to not to I'm
sorry well the two end panels here where the
band is you know looking out at the audience
and then you get the camera shot back to them
um you know and they're saying i don't know if
we can let this go and being gem of the holograms
and and uh you know we'll we'll do whatever we
Ken to keep it and all that. So they get back
home to LA and Rio is there waiting. oh boy more
drama here we go but the thing is i understand
again where he's coming from oh absolutely i'm
not saying it in a bad way i'm saying it in a
comedic way i'm hoping it's coming across that
way oh boy more drama yay wait wait there's a
little bit of drama before that is they're talking
they're you know Ray is included in the group
there. That's another thing that we kind of haven't
touched on yet, but because Raya is still meshing
with the with the with the rest of them. You
know what I mean? Like this whole conflict is
sort of it really has kind of brought them together.
She came out about what she knew and, you know,
they figured out a fix for, you know, that and.
Mm hmm. You know to get the the the stingers
off their off their scent and and you know cause
you know So they don't have two problems, but
they also got payback. So it's good But then
the whole you know, they're like telling her
hey, yeah Well, you're part of the family now
and you know You're gonna have to start getting
used to the fact that Kimber is gonna steal your
stuff and she's not gonna give it back and you
know Just everybody just kind of there. They're
making her a part of the group so I do have to
put a little call out here that this I want to
know something that they say here in this group,
because I thought, huh, huh. So where was it?
Where was it? It was about the shoes. Where is
that? That would be right before. Oh, the clogs?
The clogs? Yeah, the purple clogs. That was an
issue, too. The part where they threw the shoes.
I was like, so you threw your shoes and Kimber
kept them. Actually, no, they were from Aja because
Aja threw them. So everybody's shared those.
Well, what happened was and I only remember this
because it was Aja throwing a shoe at Kimber.
Kimber wanted to wake Aja up. Don't ever try
to wake Aja up. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's not a
good idea. That's right. She threw the shoe at
her and Kimber kept the shoes. The thing is that
it's their Shayna's shoes. Mm -hmm. So even here's
another thing is that Aja borrowed them first.
I'm just saying. Yeah. It was Aja's responsibility
to give them back. So you're giving, you know,
this whole, oh, Kimber steals stuff that she
likes and doesn't give stuff back. I was like,
yes, but you're the reason why those purple clocks
haven't gone back. Just saying. Absolutely. So
we get the Jerrica Rio conversation where he
says I don't know what's gonna happen with us
Jerrica our personal relationship I mean, I'm
still in love with you. I just can't turn it
off, but I'm not ready to just say we can get
back together Rio you can't even look at me after
all that's happened. I don't know if that's going
to work and that's Then what you know if I look
at you, I know I'll be weak and say we should
get back together And that's not a decision I
should make right now so again He is being completely
logical about this. I think yeah It's he is so
tuned into his own emotions obviously It's very
emotionally Mature and I liked that really really
dug that Yeah and he goes on to say the whole
bit about you know her and her sisters and the
secret and that you know he basically says I
decided to keep your secret I care about all
of you too much to be the one that breaks the
story even though it would make my career it
would likely end yours I know I'm sorry it's
a horrible position to put you in it is but I'm
not going to hurt you guys on purpose Think well,
I kind of thought of you as family. So yeah,
that's my decision and I can live with it. However
however However, I think you guys should seriously
consider getting this out there as soon as possible
You know basically for them to reveal it themselves
A reasonable request a really reasonable request
And of course they're all listening at the door
Of course, yeah So they all kind of good I was
gonna say it's it's interesting because here
he's asking them to do something, you know to
out themselves basically about this and Yeah,
I mean the Misfits are actually going through
something similar to be honest because Jetta
Her secret is out is that she's not really Britain.
She's not British And she's playing like she
is. And you know, the Misfits are handling it
that way, but they're like, she doesn't really
care. Jetta's like, whatever, I don't care. They
call me whatever they want. I am who I am, and
I'm not going to make any excuses for that. She's
going to get over it. They'll get over it. The
series of the drama will get over it. But the
difference between Jetta's secret and the secret
of Jim is a little different because... You know,
I mean, I understand why Jerika created the personality,
you know, synergy and all that. We get it. We've
been doing this for a while. The cartoon's 30
years old and we understand why the story is
the way it is. And I don't have a problem with
it at all. But the thing of it is, is, is that
they've been lying to the world. So was Jetta.
She was, but nobody knew about it beforehand.
The Misfits didn't even know about that. They
just assumed that's who she was. So but the fact
that they're all standing behind her regardless
of whether or not it was a lie or not no one's
upset No one in the band is upset at her for
lying and and that's the thing is I think about
it like technically speaking The the same could
be true for gem on the holograms if they came
out and said yeah, this is what we're doing Despite
the you know, let's just say the the technical
stuff that they're using I mean His request isn't
too off for one, but for two I think they're
the idea that they're afraid of you know It'll
be the end of our careers if that happened I
don't think that it will be nearly as bad as
they think especially if they Do what he says
and get ahead of it. They can control What information
gets out about how they do that? Absolutely,
and I think that's, and he's not giving them
an ultimatum or anything. No, no. He considers
them family. He's saying that you need to do
this before somebody really does find out and
doesn't keep the secret. Yeah. And not only that,
it's stronger if they are able to control the
information rather than somebody else breaking
it and not being able to control the information.
But, you know, again, This comes to this. This
character has a lot of integrity. It's character
integrity that has started from the very beginning
because he was also put in a position early on
in the comic, like way back in issue one, issue
two, where, you know, he was told to write the
story and he kept, you know, so it's it's very
the Rio in the comics is so much more. He has
so much more integrity. Thank you. So I know
Nicole wanted to hear that, but this proves it
right here. He's just, I love this character.
I think he's awesome. And I want to see them
together too, but I'm glad that he's like, I
can't do this right now. I'm going to keep my
distance because there's going to be consequences
to what you just did. And I'm really frustrated
about it, even though I'm really in love with
you. But silver linings, he's not outing us.
Our careers live to fight another day. Kimber!
That's such a Kimber thing. And we get the final
panel. You're right. Whatever comes next, so
long as we have each other, everything will be
okay. Hell yeah. Yes, I love it when Shayna swears.
It truly is the best. Hell yes. Issue 26 the
final issue of the main ongoing Absolutely love
it think it's great What a great great ending
It's not really a period ending. It's not really
like Okay, that's it period. We're done. It's
more so okay. We ended it on a good note. We
have a way forward What's next kind of a thing?
It's not a cliffhanger ending. It's a it's a
I don't know. It's a comma ending. It's one of
those things where we're ending it here, comma,
but yeah. It's a hold for now, but we'll see
what happens. I think it's a good way to end.
Even if it doesn't continue on, it's a good story.
But it also leads for some other stories that
it could come about. But I think, yeah. I think
either way, it's a good ending. Yep. So we are
coming to a close here on Gem Jam in July We
have the six issue miniseries Gem Infinite For
those of you that don't know it's basically two
issues a month from June July and next month
in August Parts one and two were out in June
parts three and four out in July and five and
six out in August Just how bad can things get
if synergy tech is let loose in the world read
all six in order for the full story So we are
gonna take a quick break Before we do that we
should probably rate this actually now I think
about it Amy what are you gonna give 26 numbers
see number 26 a five Absolute five I'm good with
it I have no reason not to go to five either
because it really wraps up everything. It wraps
up the whole series. It wraps up the storyline
for this. It gives you real life conclusions.
Yeah, I really like this issue about said episode.
This issue, I thought it was really great. Absolutely.
Five's all around. This is a perfect ending for
now kind of story All three of these issues 24
25 and 20 60 truly outrageous arc was a full
Great interesting story. There were no real down
bits. There was nothing really to criticize I
didn't even really do any nitpicking on any of
them. I don't think so, yeah Yeah, so we get
five is all around for that Sad to see it like,
you know, kind of wrapping up a cross on my fingers
that it's just a pause. It's just a pause for
a little while. They're going back to Hawaii
for a vacation. There you go. Well, yeah, we
are going to find out what is going to happen.
In a moment, we're going to take a quick break.
But at the end of Issue 26, we have an outrageous
thank you from group editor Sarah Gaito. So everybody
go back and read that. We've got all the various.
We've got like three pages of all the main covers
of each of the 26 issues in here. Absolutely.
Yeah, we're gonna take a quick break. We're gonna
come back with the gem infinite solicitations
and Gem dimensions as well, so we'll be back
after this episode 147 of the pull bag and we're
going to talk about the gem infinite solicitations.
Gem of the holograms infinite number one of three
this is the first ever gem misfits crossover
event written by Kelly Thompson art is done by
Stacey Lee on this issue the ultimate gem misfits
crossover event begins and now with infinite
part one Happy Quintet gem and the holograms
are stronger than ever, which is a good thing
because they're about to embark on an adventure
unlike anything they'd ever imagined possible.
After a public fight with the Misfits at a charity
event, a strangely dressed tech rat shows up
and takes them to a whole new world. Literally.
And it's going to change everything. Ha, tech
rat. I'm so excited. Hello tech rat. It's gonna
be fun. Yeah, I agree. All the music, all the
fashion, all the romance, all the sci -fi shenanigans
begin here. Interconnecting subscription covers
on both Gem Infinite and Gem of the Misfits Infinite
by Veronica Fish. Variant cover on this one is
done by Marlee Zarcon. Part one of the Gem Infinite
mega event. This is going to be amazing. Absolutely.
So I'm reading these folks in... part one through
six order even though they're listed the next
one is listed gem of the holograms the misfits
infinite part one of three but this is actually
part two of the story uh kelly thompson and jen
saint ange uh kelly thompson writing jen on art
uh the first ever gem misfits crossover event
continues here in infinite in in infinite part
two Never okay with letting Gem and the Hologram
steal the spotlight. The Misfits have followed
them to this brave new world and are shocked
by what they find. A world ruled by Gem and powered
by synergy hologram technology? What is even
happening? Part two. Guess Gem and the Hologram's
secret is out, but what will the Misfits do with
the secret? All new adventures continue here
in Gem and the Hologram's first ever crossover
event. So we get Jim infinite part three Kelly
and Stacey. So here's the thing folks There's
two series there's Jim of the holograms infinite
and then there's Jim of the holograms the misfits
infinite nice, so it's It's six issues, but it's
broken up into two different series because you
got Kelly writing on both on the gym stuff You
got Stacey Lee doing art on the misfits gem misfits
infinite stuff you've got uh... uh... ginseng
age so very very cool uh... part three gem of
the holograms are transported to another world
and where they and unlikely allies the misfits
must save the world from jim corp a corrupt corporation
that now controls all hologram technology fungera
joshain Go ahead. That was a fun fun. Oh, Jerrica,
Aja, Shayna and Kimber reunited with their father
Emmet Benton, sort of. Dun, dun, dun. Dun. Yeah,
nice. And just who is behind Jim Corp? The answer
may surprise you. All the music, all the fashion,
all the romance, all the sci -fi shenanigans
are here. The Misfits, infinite number two of
three. This is infinite part four. Outside the
walls, free of gym corpse, synergy technology,
a resistance is building, one led by none other
than bandmates and girlfriends, Kimber and Stormur,
yay! Nice. Bullet points for this one. It's going
to take Gem of the Holograms, the Misfits, and
the alt -renality counterparts all working together
to save this world. Is that even possible? And
will Pazazz be able to live with the fact that
she must never reveal Gem's secret? Some things
may be too much to ask. Let's see, Gem of the
Holograms infinite number three. This is part
five. In order to defeat the evil Jim Corp and
wrest away control of synergy, the holograms
are going to need all the help they can get.
Which means teaming up with frequent arch enemies,
the Misfits. Can a common enemy join them together
to save the day? Dun dun dun. Emmet Benson gets
the best surprise a father could hope for. And
what will Jerika become in order to help open
people's eyes to the truth? Yep, it's gonna be
awesome. And then we get the finale Jim and the
holograms the misfits infinite part three of
three This is part six of the crossover teaming
up with Jim and the holograms has never had a
higher stakes Can they set aside their differences
long enough to make a difference in this world?
And if they can succeed then what's next now
that the misfits know the holograms greatest
secret question mark? Awesome cannot can the
holograms really trust the Misfits with their
secret once everything is over After everything
they've seen what on earth could be next for
these bands So yeah, Jim infinite six -part epic
Jim and the holograms and the Misfits crossover
event from IDW publishing Kelly Thompson Stacey
Lee Jen st. Ainge absolutely awesome it's going
to be great we will have to cover all of it at
another point in time because as I said at the
beginning of this podcast Amy and Nicole are
going across the pond for some robot convention
it's gonna be awesome fantastically awesome I
can't wait it's gonna be like outrageous it's
gonna be like outrageous like also Like that
on Facebook and you know Twitter Existed back
in the 80s. I mean, can you imagine? The world
would have been destroyed by now We would be
living in a dystopian future of Twitter and Facebook
existed in the 80s folks Talk about hologram
technology So I over by the time you folks are
hearing this we would have been a week removed
from San Diego Comic -Con 2017 During that weekend.
I think it was on the Friday I got a press release
email from IDW publishing. This is going to take
place after gem infinite wraps up Gem and the
Holograms step into a new comic book dimension
The most outrageous band in the universe hit
the road this November with an anthology series
So Hasbro's Gem and the Holograms may be currently
out touring with the infinite crossover miniseries
But they are already plotting their next move
with the just announced Gem and the Holograms
dimensions This new series from IDW Publishing
will be an anthology comic set in GEM's world
and will be bringing in rotating roster of talent
into the mix, as well as some GEM mainstays to
tell new adventures with two self -contained
stories per issue. The debut issue sees writer
Kate Leaf, who has worked on Patsy Walker aka
Hellcat. and artist Tanya Ford, or Tanya Ford,
I'm sorry if I'm saying that wrong, who worked
on Silk Jamming on a Dungeons and Dragons game
night where Jerrica plays the role of Dungeon
Master and even Synergy joins in the fun. Just
as exciting, Sophie Campbell returns to the world
of Jim, writing and illustrating a story about
the misfits on a ski trip gone south when Pazazz's
cat is on the loose. Nice. Yay! Excited. So that
reminds me of... Yeah, that reminds me of the
last resort episode of the cartoon the ski trip
part of it. Yeah Sarah Gatos IDW Group editor
says Sophie along with series regular writer
Kelly Thompson took the classic gem in the holograms
concept and reimagined it for a new generation
of gem fans now with dimensions the floodgates
have been opened for the creators to for Creators
new to gem to come play in Kelly and Sophie's
arena for an all -star jam session. Jam fans
can rest assured that Thompson won't be going
far, though, and can anticipate her return to
the series before you can say Showtime Synergy.
Showtime Synergy? Issue one kicks off in November
with main cover art by Tonya Ford and variant
covers by Jam Art team founding members Sophie
Campbell and M. Victoria Roboto, plus Eisner
nominee Derek Charm from Star Wars Adventures,
which is another IDW series. Okay, so, Gem Dimensions.
I think this is gonna be good. I think this is
gonna be fun. This, to me, IDW with this is doing
what they did with that second TMNT ongoing,
TMNT Universe. TMNT Universe is doing the exact
same thing, where they're bringing in various
writers and artists to write various different
turtle stories. for the TMNT. They're doing the
same thing here with Gem Dimensions, and one
of my Gem friends on Facebook, I explained it
to her as, think of it as two cartoon episodes
in one comic. That's the way I, that's the only
way, because it specifically says in this press
release that they are going to be two self -contained
stories. So I'm not expecting a lot of, obviously
they're going to keep the straight continuity
that Kelly and Sophie have already set out. in
the first 26 issues and the annuals and the specials
and all that. But who knows where this can go?
I mean, a Dungeons and Dragons episode. Come
on now. Everybody wants to see Jim Dungeons and
Dragons style. Right. That's a crossover. Yeah.
Hey, I'm all for that. No, I think this will
be a really good idea. Go ahead. I know. Absolutely.
I'm excited. This is fantastic because it gives
a whole bunch of other creators opportunity to
play in the sandbox and maybe, you know, have
a couple of, you know, it gets to to throw some
ideas out there that'll be fun. And like, you
know, we could see like a couple of issues or
whatever. And and then you we get something else.
So it's like it's like getting little episodes.
So I mean, we really enjoyed the annual. Why
would that not work for this? So I'm really looking
forward to that. Absolutely. Looking forward
to seeing how that goes, especially if Kelly,
if the reason why Kelly's not doing this is because
she's got another project that she's doing, and
she's going to be back. Kelly, it was announced.
Yeah, I mean, Kelly, it was announced that she's
going to be doing Ghostbusters Answer the Call.
I know. It looks so cool. That's going to be
fun, too. So that's where Kelly's going to be
for a little while. Yeah, gem dimensions. It's
gonna be cool. It's gonna be fun. It's gonna
be interesting We will be covering the infinite
six issue miniseries arc crossover miniseries
Once all six issues are out I think I've read
the first three and I'm liking where it's going
so far Nice. I think I've read the first three
as of this recording so yeah uh that's what's
uh what's going on here inside the pull bag gem
jam in july um another spotlight month kind of
done here inside the pull bag any final thoughts
amy sounds awesome i can't wait to read it i
haven't read infinite yet but i'm looking forward
to it and yeah keep it on going good job ladies
and other people that were involved in the in
this last issue that we, you know, this last
three issues and a lot of people, there were
a lot of people on that. So I'm going to miss
somebody. So I'm going to say everybody that
that had anything to do with it, including the
editor and even the publisher. Thank you. It
was really great. And looking forward to reading
the rest. Absolutely, Nicole. Also, congratulations,
Kelly. I'll just say, yeah, this is. yeah congratulations
on many things i'll just say the same things
that amy says but and if you're not reading this
why aren't you reading this because it's amazing
there you go absolutely um so coming up next
inside the pullback we're doing another theme
month it's going to be our second transformers
month of the year autobotly august where Ryan
the Unevenflow Merkley joins me for various Transformers
comics. We start out with wrapping up... wrapping
up robots in disguise and more than meets the
eye, because I had no idea 56 and 57 of each
of those series was in Titan's Return. Okay,
whatever. Yeah, it got a little confusing at
the end there. Yeah. And then Ryan and I are
going to go back. and read Chris Metzen and Flint
Dilley, along with Olivia Romandelli's series,
the Autocracy series with Autocracy, Monstrosity
and Primacy, all three episodes for all three
trades. And then Amy will be joining Ryan and
I for Sins of the Wreckers. That's our sins.
Well, at the end of that podcast, you're going
to hear Amy totally fangirl out over Ryan, because
she didn't realize who he was. I didn't fangirl
that much. I mean, come on. You're building it
up. No, I'm not building it up. I mean, you nearly
passed out from excitement. No, I nearly fell
out of my chair going, oh, jeesh. Yeah, so. Yeah,
you did. So. And then Ryan, in week four, Ryan
and I are going to talk about something Nicole
loves, Angry Birds Transformers. Woohoo. I'm
not kidding. It's awesome. I don't get why people
are hating it. I was cracking up nearly every
page of that series. Ugh, so funny. So funny.
All right. And then we close it out with the
Dinobot trilogy, Punishment, Redemption, and
Salvation. And that's what's coming up for the
pull bag in August. I'm not sure if we're going
to have a September month or not yet, because
October is going to be all back to the future,
because we're going to call it out of time October.
So we might need to take September to work on
October. So I'm not sure how that's going to
go. Amy, where can the people find you online?
You can find me on Twitter. And my handle on
Twitter is Lady of Rack. Nicole what about you?
