Origins In Television with Steve Megatron!

TFJoneMike, and for our next Origins in Television

today, I welcome none other than Steve Megatron.

Yo! Yo! Today we're going to take him through

his TV watching Origins and more. All righty

then. So to get right down to it, we got 30 questions

all about your TV watching habits. We have the

TV Fantasy Funland that runs from question 24

to 28. So that's carried over from one of the

other origins. I think it's either the cartoon

or the toy collecting or one of those. I forget

which one. But yeah, these are all new, all unique,

all different. Question 1 through 23. And then

29 and 30 are pretty much, well, question 30

is kind of like the same one for everything.

What's one advice that you give? Insert fandom

here, blah, blah, blah, blah. So that's always

the same. But here we go. And yes, I know. I

can hear the chaos queen in the back of my brain

right now. Hell, I can almost hear so loudly

like as if she was standing right behind me right

now. Did you grow up watching TV and at what

age do you first remember really noticing or

falling in love with a TV show? Well, I remember

watching TV shows as far back as I can remember.

Trying to think what I even remember as far as

shows. I mean, I remember watching as far back

as like. Sesame Street or things like that. And

Mr. Rogers and things like that. I don't remember

how old I was. I think I remember as far back

as three years old. I don't remember anything

prior to that. That would have put it at 89.

So I would have been nine years old at the time.

Oh God, I'm old. I was growing out of that stuff

by then. But yeah, very cool, very cool. As a

kid, how much TV were you allowed to watch, and

did your parents sit you down in front of the

TV tube to distract you a lot? Hmm. I don't think

my parents really stuck me in front of the TV

to... distract me i think it was just more something

that i just did i kind of just watched tv you

know as right you know as one would yeah no absolutely

yeah collectively builds yep yeah like some parents

are like I guess I need to work on this for the

next episode because usually how that question

trails off is it usually reads is, did your parents

sit you down in front of the TV tube? Did your

parents sit you down in front of the tube to

distract you a lot? Like, here, kid, watch this.

Go away. You bother me is usually how I end up

reading that. But because some parents. will

do that, at least back when we were kids. Some

parents in the 80s would do that. I knew several

parents of friends of mine who would do that.

They would sit their kids down in front of the

TV so they wouldn't have to deal with them kind

of thing, which sucks. That's not how you should

parent your kids, folks. But at least that's

not how you should have done it in the 80s and

not how you should do it now, obviously. But

it is what it is. What was the first? Now, when

I say this term, folks, it's not what it actually

means, but it's in air quotes. But there's kids

shows and there's adult shows. So what was the

first adult show you first remember watching

or falling in love with? Our track, the original

series. Very cool. Very cool. Definitely one

that eventually. uh caused me to own a bunch

of vhs tapes like the mail away vhs tapes yeah

exactly when that was a thing yep i had other

shows that did that for me wasn't star trek but

i had other shows did that for me uh not a live

action tv show but i had the Burger King Kids

Club TMNT VHS tapes. Did you have any favorite

TV characters when you were growing up? Well,

again, having watched a crap ton of Star Trek,

I would say Captain Kirk was a pretty heavy influence

on my childhood, just having watched it and being

terrified of public speaking, and my parents

used that as, like, pretend you're captain Kirk

and talk to people and he's not scared, blah,

blah, blah. Like, but still didn't help because

I was, did you want to talk like this though?

Well, I couldn't talk like Shatner for one and

two. Like, obviously. Yeah. Yeah. Uh, but yeah,

I, yeah, I, I, um, That would probably be the

first main character that I really recall and

remember outside of that. I liked Riker on TNG.

Yeah, Riker's awesome. Were you loyal or partial

to specific TV networks when you were a kid?

How about now? I used to watch a lot of CBS,

NBC, Fox, ABC, just kind of your basic cable

channels. And I don't know. It just kind of depended

what was on it. I would say ABC and Fox or like

UPN had more stuff on it that I watched than

CBS or NBC. And I even really to this day, I

don't really have a loyalty to any particular

network or station like that. yeah like i just

i kind of go more for you know what what do they

have for me what do i what do i care to watch

yeah and at this point really ever since let's

say 2008 2009 it's all streaming and i yeah yeah

i know that you know whatever we'll get into

that in a minute but ever since streaming came

along it's like oh network loyalty what's that

Like, it doesn't matter what network the show's

on as long as I can watch the show. Speaking

of the streaming, when streaming came along,

did you resist it at first? What was the first

streaming show that drew you in? I think I just

liked the fact that I could watch all of Star

Trek on it. Yeah. I think that was like the main

draw. Like I didn't really care overall, but

I think it was just easier to access various

shows that I liked watching Star Trek or, you

know, Boy Meets World or Home Improvement or

Last Man Standing. Mm hmm. Yep. So, yeah, I mean,

it was kind of the place to go to watch all of

my favorites. Yep. Absolutely. Do you still watch

broadcast TV or cable? Why or why not? I don't

because I don't have it and I haven't had cable

in probably 15 years. So I've had streaming,

but then there's the, the other aspect of it,

which is that, I mean, over the years, occasionally

I've owned the digital tuner. Yep. So like I

have one again. uh because we watched the olympics

recently but as far as the as far as the the

other like just kind of keeping up with regular

cable and subscribing and all that i i haven't

had cable like i said in 15 years so i i don't

really know what what the going rate is on there

i kind of catch everything on streaming or on

youtube or clips or yeah things like that yeah

absolutely All right. Top ten TV shows of all

time. Go. No. These are in no particular order

for anybody that are paying attention to this.

Star Trek The Next Generation, The Flash, Star

Trek TOS, or the original series, Star Trek Deep

Space Nine, Whose Line Is It Anyway?, Boy Meets

World, Big Bang Theory, Last Man Standing, and...

Oh, good. I counted right. Prison Break and SNL.

Nice. Very cool, very cool. I like some of those,

too. Who are some of your favorite TV writers

and why? Oh, crap. So to do that, I have to cheat

because I don't pay attention to them most of

the time. I'm really bad with it. I really don't

pay attention to it. However, I will say that.

For me, it's like a lot of the Star Trek The

Next Generation people, like Michael Piller,

Jerry Taylor, Ronald D. Moore, Brandon Braga.

A lot of these guys have done other Star Trek

where they've done a lot of other sci -fi programs.

And I know that they don't just write. They do

mostly producing and things like that. We still

have a influence that some of the best Star Trek

episodes were written by DC Fontana as well.

Like re rewriting some of the things Gene Roddenberry

came up with. So, yeah, but yeah, there's, there's

been a lot of, a lot of different writing, but

to me, a lot of the classic writing is still

best for me. Yeah, absolutely. Yeah. That question

always kind of knocks people off because most

people don't pay it to like, And I'm not saying

people aren't TV buffs. That's not what I'm saying.

But what I'm saying when I say this is you have

to really be a TV buff that really looks at everything.

And for me, being the TV buff that I am with

the shows that I've watched over my lifetime,

it's like, oh, yeah. Like, I've seen the shows

that I watch enough times where it's like, Watching

the opening credits and seeing this episode was

written by Instagram. Those episodes, so many

times, it's like, of course I'm going to know

their name. I might have to look it up just to

make sure as a double check, but of course I'm

going to know their name, but a lot of people

aren't going to know, so that question always

throws people off. What defines a good story

to you? Honestly, keeping with continuity, not

forgetting the continuity. But I also love like

some some upbeat moments. I like where they they

can. More or less, you know, you can have a.

season finale you can have character growth you

can have progression through the series and when

i say progression i don't mean this garbage what

they're doing in modern television i mean like

where they actually it was like a slow burn over

the 20 some episodes to kind of build on it like

it was very minuscule between episodes but it

was like an actual progression as you're like

watching time go by but i also like where they

they give all of the characters a chance to shine

instead of just like they do with a lot of stuff

now, it's like you have your main character and

everybody else is the MacGuffin. Who are some

of your favorite TV actors and or actresses?

TV. Again, I have to go back to a lot of the

Star Trek cast for most of it, but I also like

a lot of the actors and acts from the Arrowverse,

from The Flash and things like that. A lot of

them are good. a lot of the power ranger actors

at least early on through to like turbo and then

after that i just didn't care so because mostly

it was the same people never take a few so i

liked a lot of them yeah so i mean it would pretty

much i can't name a specific one but i mean for

me it's a lot of it's tied into the shows i watched

which would have been like a power rangers or

like star trek or the next generation deep space

nine yeah well you got may the man rest in peace

you got jason david frank as tommy oliver oh

totally you got uh let's see trying to think

what other power rangers you got all the star

trek actors like we've already mentioned you

got i mean patrick stewart is just top notch

not only was he picard but professor xavier obviously

that's not tv but This is a movie. Yeah, no,

just absolutely just, yeah, so cool. Is there

a criminally underrated show that you think everyone

needs to watch? See, had you asked me that like

10 years ago, I probably would have had some

because a lot of shows were getting canceled

right after one season. Like Flashback or whatever.

I think it was like, was it Flashback or was

it like Flashpoint? Flashpoint, I think is what

it was, yeah. It was like, no, it wasn't that.

I think it was a TV show. Anyways, there was

a TV show that was something along those lines.

It was a time travel show that I'd have to look

it up, but it lasted like one season, and I was

like, aww. Yeah. Hate when that happens. Absolutely

hate when that happens. Can't remember the name

of it. Can't remember the name of it. It sucks,

but yeah. Oh, boy. Well, speaking of things that...

More things. What's the one series cancellation

that just utterly destroyed you? I mean, I think

Continuum. I really liked that show. Again, it

was a time travel show. And they... They went...

You know, it was about a... basically a futuristic

fbi agent who has accidentally set back to 2012

from the year 2077 with a group of terrorists

that they were trying to kill and they put something

in the time travel device instead of erasing

them they were sent back to the creation of their

terrorist group yeah Wow. Back in 2012. So it

was it was very convoluted, but it was interesting

to me. And I was liked it because it was canceled

due to declining viewership. Yeah. High production

costs like the sci fi stuff. And they did like

a final abbreviated fourth season for it, which

I was like sad because they tried to tie everything

up, but it just didn't quite land the way. So,

yeah, I enjoyed the show for what it was, but

I was again sad that that didn't. get resolved

properly. But I mean, the same thing kind of

happened with like heroes. I was watching heroes

and that one kind of took it. giant crap on the

end of it too. Yeah. Heroes did that. Scrubs

did that, but Scrubs is back. Ladies and gentlemen.

Oh boy. What is your favorite run or story arc

of a TV series? So within the series, favorite

run. Yeah. So within the series, whatever season

it is, what's your favorite, like run of a run

of episodes or favorite story arc within a season?

Honestly, like some of Star Trek, the next generation

season. Uh, when I say season five, they had

scotty it wasn't really an arc but it was you

know they had scotty and there was the also the

two -part unification episode which i think was

either season four or five or six i don't really

remember which one in there but uh it had spock

and that was kind of a little two -parter um

if i didn't choose those i would say even the

season finale of all good things and you know

the fact that q was kind of an overarching part

of tng which i loved very cool very cool if i

had to choose a show with a multi -part arc it

would be you know the white light like leading

up yes because that to me it was like that's

my favorite yep that was that was my favorite

like thing as a kid like i was like oh the the

white ranger yeah like yeah welcome white ranger

the time has come to reveal your identity Guess

who's back. What is the one TV show you can watch

over and over and over again and never get tired

of it? Kind of a copter, but it would be Star

Trek TNG for the most part. That's that's literally

like kind of my hands down show. I although I

do go through phases where I like other shows

like I'll watch, you know, a bunch of whose line

is it anyway? Or I'll watch, you know, random

Big Bang Theory episodes or random SNL episodes

with certain hosts. Yeah. Like, he did, like,

a Jim Carrey thing, watched, like, all his episodes,

and then time he guested on, like, the 30th anniversary.

Yeah. So there are those elements, too, where

I'll go back and watch other shows like that.

Yeah, see, the only late -night Jim Carrey stuff

I can watch is in limb color. Let me tell you

something. Did you know in Liar Liar he's in

that movie as Fire Marshal Bill? Yeah. I found

that out recently. I was like, Oh my God, he

is in there. Holy crap. I did. I found that out

too. And I was like, Oh, that's awesome. That

is amazing. Yeah. That's crazy. Hilariously good.

Is there one TV show that everyone else watches

or watched that you just can't get into? Like

you don't hate it, but you just, it is. And for

you, there's a show that I hate, but that is

that, but that would be lost. Yeah, I'm right

there with you. Because I don't like anything

that Abrams has put together. But I think he's

a hack. So there's that. But I've seen some of

Breaking Bad. Yeah. I don't hate it. I don't

particularly care to watch it, though. Right,

yeah. I was on that bandwagon a while ago and

then Ryan and even Flo kind of turned me around

on it. We actually did episodes of the seasons

for remote control when I was running remote

control before we did started up this podcast

here. And I came around on Breaking Bad. It was

okay, but it's not a show I could ever revisit.

It has too many emotionally charged moments.

It's just way too much. Abrams and all that,

there's only two Abrams shows that I can safely

say on television that I've ever really... One

I like, but I need to revisit it. The other one

I really enjoyed. The one I like is Felicity.

The one I really enjoyed was Alias. The rest

of it, whatever, I don't carry the way. Are there

any TV shows you regret spending time with? So,

like, you watched it, but you're like, why waste

my time on that? It would probably be any of

the shows that ended after a season. Oh, yeah.

More so just because like I invested the time

to watch it and I find out that it only had one

season and I'm like, I can see that if if the

show didn't get a proper ending, like if like.

There are certain shows that, as the network

knows ahead, or the showrunners know ahead of

time, that the network is not going to pick them

up and have enough work or good. Okay, this is

it, folks. This is all we got. So let's go out

with a bang and let's give the story a good ending.

I'm okay with, but most of the time, shows don't

get that and you get a cliffhanger like, The

six episodes that Drive got, like the series

Drive on Fox, that show only got six episodes.

And I know now in today's world, six episodes

is a series on Netflix. No, it's not. Shut up.

You're on Netflix. Whatever. But it is what it

is. But yeah, I completely understand that. Do

you have a physical or digital media collection

of TV shows? How large or small is it? Uh, I

have, I have streaming, I have streaming platforms

too, but yeah, I have some of my shows that I've

just over the years just dumped them to a drive.

Cause I'm like, I don't feel like dealing with

this. Um, I do have some DVDs, but yeah, absolutely.

Very cool. Very cool. Was there ever a moment

where you were like done with TV altogether?

No more TV for me. I went through a phase a couple

of years ago where I was watching about 27 shows

a week. Yes. And I was like, OK, I need to eliminate

a bunch of these. I think we're doing remote

control during that. Yeah, we were. I was just

like I was watching way too many shows and. To

be fair, some of them got canceled during COVID.

Some of them got canceled after COVID. Some of

them ended naturally. Some of them didn't. The

ones that I knew were, the ones I wasn't totally

invested in, I dropped those pretty fast because

I was like, okay, I need to cut back. And then

there were some that I hated the direction the

story was going. And so I just stopped watching.

And then there was a multitude that I was like,

okay, I can't give up this bad habit until they

come to their natural conclusion. Yep. And so

then when that happened, that's when I really

whittled down the list there. And so, yeah, I

think I'm down to like a couple shows now. But

I don't watch any of them religiously anymore.

It's kind of like if I have time, I'll watch

it. But otherwise, I don't worry about it. There

is currently one TV show that I actively have

to watch religiously that I'm not podcasting

about yet. And that is ABC's High Potential.

I have been watching that for the two seasons

that it currently has. And the second season

returns. technical difficulties hello folks editor

tfg1 mike here just to let you know this episode

was recorded Before High Potential ended its

second season, it was about to come back for

the end of the second season, so this episode

is airing after the season ended. So yeah, I

edited around all of what I said during this

part, so you're hearing this instead, and a cool

clip from High Potential. So you'll hear that

now, and then we'll be back to Steve Megatron's

Origins in Television. Right after this technical

difficulty part. Let's move on, shall we? So,

what do you think happened? All of the candles

were melted down, except for this one. There

was threshing around, and bathwater put out this

lone candle. But was it murder? 100%. But the

other thing with me is, I don't watch TV anymore

like I used to. I watch TV to podcast. Any con,

any... media consumption i do it's so i can podcast

about it if i am watching something just to watch

it i feel like i'm wasting my time like i i can't

like the only thing that i consume media wise

that i don't pod is like when i watch youtube

videos that are not a tv show or that are not

You know, like, when I watch tech videos, like,

we'll eventually, like, I might bring up, oh,

the Samsung, and this is something we'll bring

up on the next AG. Oh, the Samsung S26 lineup

is out. It looks like the same damn design. S26,

S26 Plus, S26 Ultra. It's the same. The corners

are a little bit more curved, but the phone still

has the same camera layout, still has the same

whatever. Same as last year. Whatever. It is

what it is. Anyway, but yeah, no. TV is more

for... like oh my god i must podcast about this

television show right now like i must figure

out a uh two and a half year plan of how we're

gonna do this or whatever it is kind of thing

for me all right question 21 what are you watching

right now and what do you think our listeners

should check out presently i'm watching like

dark tank and the canadian version dragon's den

But I don't really know because I'm not really

watching anything modern. I'm actually watching

a lot of older television because I tried watching

Star Trek Starfleet Academy. So I dropped that

pretty fast after the fourth episode. Yeah. So

I'm not going to take a dump because I'm sure

people out there that like listening or like

that show, I find it utterly poor writing. and

just a mcguffin fest of we we favor one character

and one character at a time and they're the mcguffin

of everything and so yeah i i don't like new

trek animated on the other hand they do really

well uh so i don't know there's there's not a

lot of not a lot of content to really watch right

now if strange new world season four were out

i'd probably be saying that yeah because i I've

enjoyed that for the most part. But yeah, on

a whole, the shifting gears, I need to get back

to. Yep. Because I enjoyed what I saw. Yep. And

then for the most part, like I said, I watch

a lot of nostalgia run stuff, a lot of older

programming. Hey, Matt, you're going to want

to see this. Is that my GTO? I built that thing

15 years ago. Somebody stole it. Hi, Dad. There

is the thief. Hey, kid, say hi to Grandpa. Hey,

Pop. Very cool, very cool. What is your favorite

TV show genre? Do you have a different, do you

have different types of shows, different situations,

vegging out, date night, family night, group

watch, et cetera? What are the shows I like to

watch? Yeah, like what genres? Like action, sci

-fi, et cetera, et cetera, situations. I mean,

with the family, I watch more so, like I said,

like Shark Tank and Dragon's Den or like Lego

Master. So I watch a lot of like reality competition

type shows with the family. But as far as myself,

I prefer sci -fi or action comedy or comedy.

Predominantly sci -fi is my my go to. I love

time travel and very convoluted stories. Very

cool. Very cool. it makes me do the mental gymnastics

that really just get me involved. And I really

like it. Uh, whereas if it's, if it's not all

in depth like that, I, I don't like, I don't

like it where it talks down to me. Like I'm stupid.

I'd like things that are complicated where I'm

like, okay, I can connect this with here and

I can this and I can, yeah. So that, that's kind

of what I get into there. Okay. So it's not sci

-fi. It's, Based on apparently they took ABC

took the idea from a Spanish language version,

I guess, is where it originates from. But I mentioned

high potential. It's a police drama. It's based

on the fact that the cleaning lady has what they

call she's a high potential intellectual. So

she's one of these people that you spill your.

your chalkboard or you spill your, your idea

board out on the floor and she can see all the

stuff that you can't about the crime or whatever

kind of thing. I don't know. You might like it.

You might not. I don't know. Do you have a, my

parents wouldn't let me watch that TV show story.

I do, but it was animated. Okay. It was the sentence.

Of course, everyone has one of those. All right,

folks, we are now entering the TV fantasy fun

land. These questions are all made up. The points

don't matter and everything else, and they technically

don't count against any real life situations

because this is the TV fantasy fun land. If you

could own any house or TV show, whose house would

it be? I would probably say Bruce Wayne's from

the original Batman 66 television show. That's

what I figured you'd say. Whose wardrobe would

you steal? Well, certainly wouldn't be a Power

Rangers. No, you can't. You can't be stealing.

Yeah. Yeah. No. I mean, if it were like normal

clothes. Yeah. Or if it's a uniform. Yeah, technically.

I mean, if it's normal clothes, like I would

just dress regular. Like, I mean. Like the uncles

on Full House, like Joey or something. Okay,

Mr. Woodchuck. Oh, boy. Great, you start tomorrow.

Welcome aboard. Get it? A board is made of wood.

Board, wood, it's a wood pen. I got a million

of them and you'll hear them all. If you could

live in any TV -verse, which one would you choose?

Probably, hmm, it would probably still be Star

Trek The Next Generation. That's what I figured.

Who would be your top three TV characters you'd

want to join you and become a friend squad? So

essentially this is the barbershop quartet question.

Basically they join you and become a barbershop

quartet. Commander Riker. Tommy Oliver. Uh -huh.

And... probably Mike Baxter from last man standing.

Oh, very cool. Very cool. You get sarcasm, you

get to do the play music and then you get, and

then you get a guy that's got martial arts. So

between all of it, you've got, you know, and

then I'm the tech guy. Then you're the tech guy.

There you go. That's awesome. If you could date

any TV character, which one would it be? Date

any TV character? Yes. You're not married. You're

not married. It's a fantasy. It's a whatever.

It's... I know. I know. I'm trying to think here.

I don't know. As a kid, it was kind of a tie

between Topanga or the first two Pink Rangers.

But... The first... Wait a minute. Oh, Kimberly

and Kat. Okay. Kimberly and Catherine. Yeah.

Gotcha. Gotcha. Gotcha. I was like, first two.

I'm like, well, right. Okay. Very cool. Very

cool. Very cool. All right, folks. As always,

these answers are made up and the points don't

matter. We are now exiting the TV fantasy fun

land. Is there a story? storyline or a subject

or something you're dying to see more of in television

a storyline that i'm dying to see more of yes

um i was hoping we would get star trek legacy

out of picard season three but unfortunately

nothing has transpired in that department yeah

so i'm a little sad about that because i was

like okay they got a solid next next generation

crew which also left the door open for any of

the older actors to come back temporarily yeah

and they squandered it and gave us Starfleet

a cap. And Section 31, both of which are crap.

I'm so glad I'm a Star Wars fan. Which, that

universe isn't much better, but it is what it

is. It's a crap. It's crap. What is the one piece

of advice you would give the TV watching fandom

in general? Just picking shows that you enjoy

and no matter what anybody says, just enjoy it

for you. Don't don't worry about it. Like I there's

a lot of shows I enjoy that I'm sure other people

don't. that's perfectly fine. Very cool. Very

cool. Absolutely. Great. Excellent advice as
