X-Men: Days of Future Past Review

About this Episode
Today on MYR Weekly, we'll be discussing what
Hugh Jackman would like to do next for Wolverine,
what's next for the Coen Brothers, and our main
attraction, X -Men Days of Future Past. All that
and more coming up on MYR Weekly. Hello and welcome
to my weekly the podcast dedicated to the movie
week that was I am one of your hosts Dan Clark
and Joining me as always well, I guess can't
say as always because I'm not here anymore, but
Kevin optimus solo. How's it going, man? It's
going good. Good to have you back. It's good
to be back for sure and Also, here is Nathan
Come on Nathan Adolfo sack shabba -doo Is that
anywhere close to being correct? Yes, Adolfo
Shabadoo. It's like he slammed dunk on TFG1 Mike
because he can't pronounce it yet. And Matt,
Fridley Sense, how's it going? I'm good. Thank
you for asking. Yeah, I luckily come back. I
felt like with this being my most anticipated
movie of the year, I felt and it being Memorial
Day weekend, I had to come back for this episode.
It's a special episode. But how's things going
for all you guys? Going well. And a busy week.
Yeah. My latest weekend of the year. I don't
know about you guys. What are you doing? Eating
a lot of food and drinking a lot of booze. Heck
yeah, man. I like to be a true American on Memorial
Day. America. I think I'm actually planning on
grilling. It's like the most American I've ever
been. Nice, nice. We'll begin MY Weekly like
we always do, as we take a look at this past
weekend's box office. And of course, with X -Men
coming out, it reigned supreme this weekend,
knocking Godzilla from the number one spot, ranking
in about 90 million for the entire weekend. It
looks like it'll have over 100 million for the
four -day total. Any surprise there that X -Men
made as much as it did? No, I don't think so.
I mean, I mean that was an impressive opening
weekend regardless even I mean no surprises of
being at number one Pulling in almost 100 million
on the first week That's pretty impressive. I
guess like I was gonna say it's fighting Godzilla,
which has only been out for a week. So like to
tower over that one so much Yeah, and Godzilla
has a pretty big drop dropping nearly 70 % going
down to 31 million Not too surprising, consider
X -Men coming out and that got very bad word
of mouth, I guess, or mixed at best. And then
I think we can finally say people are stopping
seeing Adam Sandler movies like their religion,
because that came in a disappointing third place
with only 14 million, which is hopefully a good
sign that maybe those will stop happening soon.
I don't know. There was an article out there
I didn't include in the news, but an interview
with Adam Sandler about Basically, his movie
is just being like an excuse for him to be on
vacation in some different exotic place. And
he didn't refute that. I mean, why would you
not do that if you had a chance? He said something
about doing it on 50 first dates and thinking,
hey, this is a great idea. Yeah. Who knows if
he's serious or joking, but it seems like it.
But yeah, maybe his. I mean, it's been it's interesting
because Adam Sandler does the same movie every
time and Tom Cruise does the same movie every
time. But yeah, I got to disagree with the Tom
Cruise thing, but I guess you get that. I'm just
going to have seen any of his recent films, so
I'm judging that based on complete ignorance.
Oh, man. I actually I was at work today at Target
and I saw Tom Cruise movie and it was working.
I just saw like the DVD case and I was like,
is that already out? And it looked exactly like
the movie that's coming out where it's like Groundhog's
Day. Day after tomorrow or whatever. Whatever.
Yeah, OK. Actually, we watched, you know, we
watched a movie with Eddie Izzard recently and
my girlfriend looked up Eddie Izzard on IMDB
and he was in Valkyrie and I'm like, I'm not
watching that movie, man. Why? The Tom Cruise
nasty movie. I'm not that interested. Like, I
want to see more. Eddie Izzard and Les Tom Cruise
like 90s Tom Cruise was great. I'll watch Mission
Impossible again Not again and again and again
I'll watch a few good men once a year at least
And just running out the top five neighbors holding
strong at 13 million and Amazing Spider -Man
2 ranking in another 7 million dollars I guess
one of the only big surprises of the fact that
X -Men Days of Future Past made less money its
opening weekend than X -Men 3 So, I don't know,
which is a little odd. It makes you realize that
sometimes bad movies make a lot of money, but
I'm sure it will have more staying power than
the last X -Men movie. Yeah, and obviously Amazing
Spider -Man 2 and Captain America The Winter
Soldier and probably one of its final weeks in
the theater for a lot of places took a big shot
and big drop because of X -Men coming out. Not
to mention Godzilla, but especially X -Men. So
Spider -Man dropped almost 55 % in Captain America,
the same thing. But I don't think those movies
can complain too much. They made a lot of money.
I mean, some of the other big changes was Shaft,
which upped its theater count and That brings
in about you know, two million, which is not
too bad considering its theater count of only
like 498 which is like, you know one third of
that of uh, you know x -band and other films
Go ahead. No, I just want to say yeah that that
and along with a couple other films that are
just starting to get The trickle effect as they
get into more theaters Railway man and immigrant
Yeah, both both were both of those are finally
making their way over which I think they've had
releases overseas but finally making their way
Over to the states as I say Any other surprises
anything else when you want to point out regarding
the box office? I'm the biggest drop for the
week Basically, if you're looking at like the
top 20 top 25 would definitely be a legends of
Oz It was ninth last week It's not even in the
top 20 it dropped almost 80 % And that movie
has only made seven million dollars. So oh my
god that three year in the working project Not
so hot and we also had a change in the all time.
I don't know if it was domestic or it might be
all time international worldwide released. I
think Frozen. Yeah, Frozen has passed Iron Man
3 and it is now number five in all time worldwide
gross. Which is kind of crazy. Yeah, the worldwide
gross goes Avatar, Titanic, Avengers, The Last
Harry Potter and then Frozen. Like frozen is
infectious like we were at a pool party today,
and there's a baby crying He's like hold on hold
on he pull out his phone and pulled up Let it
go and the whole party shut down and everyone
let it go That's awesome. It's something else
man. I don't I get to come to your cool parties.
I Only the only person I knew there was the person
it was the birthday party for so it would have
been hard for me to get you in and we have Dan,
obviously we did our predictions as far as which
films would make the most over 2014. We've been
keeping up on that as far as every week looking
at our top five of the year so far. And there
has been a movie that finally dropped out of
the top five. Ride Along is no longer in the
top five for 2014. Lego Movie is a million ahead
of Captain America. And that's the one and two
spot. And then it's down to Amazing Spider -Man
2 at the third spot, Godzilla at the fourth spot,
and Divergent at the fifth spot. Lego Movie is
at 254 million, and Divergent in the fifth spot
is at 147. Interesting. And my prediction for
Reo 2 was a very bad one because it looks like
it did not do very well. But yeah, what you gonna
do? Alright, anything else regarding box office
before we talk about this week's headlines? Nope.
Kev, you want to take it? Absolutely. Headlines
today? We didn't have any casting call things,
so it's basically just generic headlines and
then a couple sequels and remakes. Starting with
Hugh Jackman's been doing a bunch of interviews
obviously with X -Men coming out. He made a couple
different comments on two different fronts. One,
that he would be keen for Wolverine and Deadpool
to square off once more. Obviously, X -Men Origins,
we already had that, but even Jackman was admitting
that the character was not done well in that
film, and he would like to have another shot
at that. And then his other story was about him
wanting to see Wolverine join the Avengers. Quote,
I would love to see him as part of the Avengers.
There's a great dysfunction among that team,
and I think Wolverine would fit right into that.
There's no doubt he'd get in a fight with Hulk
at some point. Thoughts on Hugh Jackman wanting
Deadpool back or wanting to be involved in the
Avengers, Dan? Well, based upon our main attraction,
it seems like they're existing in a world where
X -Men and Lord of the Rings didn't happen, and
I'm okay with that. So if they want to, you know,
go and redo that again or do something else,
I'm fine. Him and the Avengers, I know it's just
something he said, I doubt it will ever happen.
It'll probably be after he's given up the role
a long time ago And I also think like at this
point Hugh Jackman is just saying whatever because
he's probably been on tour for a little brain
for this movie forever So I think he's just like
I guess I'll say this now and see what happens.
So I don't know What do you think about them
trying to do Deadpool again? Well As I said in
the I think of the last one I think Deadpool
could be done on the big screen. I am done properly
to the original character I I mean after this
new one, I would totally love for them to try
again. I don't know if they should give it to
Ryan Reynolds. I think he could totally pull
it off, but I think he's already had his chance
and missed it. But I want to go back to the other
one. I don't think the Avengers are full of dysfunction.
I get that they had their moments, but I think
that they function pretty well. But I also think
that him versus the Hulk would be an amazing
like reference to the comics Because that was
his first appearance, right? Yes, like him versus
the Hulk was that his first. Yeah, that was so
nice. That's cool That'd be nice if that would
actually happen or even just like a I don't know
like a short film or something if the them fighting
that would be They should do it when they get
a new one, so it could be the first appearance
of the new Wolverine. That would be cool. Also
news about the Star Wars standalone movies, I
guess they're calling them spin -off Star Wars
films. What I'm talking about there would be
not the episodic ones as far as 7, 8, 9, but
the side stories that they're going to do. There's
an article today that Gareth Edwards, who was
involved in Godzilla is going to be the director
of the first Star Wars spinoff that will be here
in December of 2016. And it's going to be written
by Gary Witta. Yeah, put him on the bag. What's
that? Oh, so we got Gary. So we got Gareth Edwards
and Gary Witta possibly involved in this new
Star Wars film. And I have no problem with that.
Like, I don't think the I don't think the problem
And Godzilla necessarily was the directing. As
much as it was the writing. So maybe I'll give
him a pass as and his involvement with Godzilla.
But I don't know, what do you what are your opinions
on Gareth Edwards or Gary Witter, Dan? Gary Witter,
I don't have a huge. I mean, I know he did Book
of Eli. He wrote After Earth and he was also
the writer of the The Walking Dead game, which
I heard I didn't play, but I heard got a lot
of Great praise. I think off the cuff podcast
gave it like the game of the year when they did
it. Gareth Edwards, I do agree. Most of the issues
with Godzilla that I had and you guys had wasn't
necessarily a director one more so with the script.
But the one issue with him as a director, even
in the movie Monsters that he directed his first
one, he's not a great acting director. He's not
really good at getting performances out of people.
And I think that was a key issue with Godzilla.
I think that's also a key issue with George Lucas
at points that that makes me worried a little
bit. So as long as he has a strong script behind
him and a good cast, but on a larger sense, I
don't know if I like the idea of them having
Star Wars movies every year. Like, I don't want
Star Wars to be like James Bond, where they just
become so repetitive you forget which one's which.
So I don't know, that to me just I think is a
worry. I think too with that, like, I'm thinking
back of like when episode one came out and how
much excitement there was. And to me, kind of
like what I said on one of the previous five
guys, like the excitement was because we hadn't
had Star Wars in so long. and like the excitement
somewhat dwindled I think with episode two and
to an extent with episode three and now it's
been so long so there's going to be this huge
you know excitement and buzz because people haven't
seen Star Wars in the theater for you know a
decade. So like, there's going to be a lot of
buzz when episode seven finally comes out. And
I think you're right. If they start doing something
every single year, unless they're just absolutely
amazing films, the excitement's really going
to wane and it's not going to be something special
anymore. It's going to be like more so like,
oh, the traditional we do this every year, every,
every Christmas we go see a Star Wars film. But
not necessarily like the lines around the building
like this is an epic event type thing So, I don't
know it might lose some of its lustre I agree
with you But I do like the idea of exploring
some of these side characters or just not necessarily
side characters But individual characters and
their own story without having to loop it into
the the whole universe So I like the idea of
exploring it. I just don't like the idea of them
forcing one out every year Let's just hope they're
so amazing that we just we forget that we're
like, yeah another Star Wars. I can't wait Hopefully,
I mean my favorite my favorite Star Wars book
I think I ever read was Han Solo trilogy Which
was just it was just Han Solo two years before
episode four and it was great So like I mean
you could follow a single one character and have
it be good. So hopefully they do that. Yeah Hopefully
everything they do with it is good because I
will be a fan of all of it if so But we also
got official word. I don't even feel like this
is news so much but We can stop calling it Batman
versus Superman Dark Knight rises darkness follows
whatever we've been all the different rumors
that came out like four months ago or whatever
I guess it has an official name now and that
would be Batman versus Superman dawn of justice
Which I don't know why they don't just call it
like dawn of justice I don't even need the Batman
be Superman part, but I guess they're not Dan
fans of subtlety when it comes to the title.
Well, it was kind of like Captain America, the
first Avenger. Yeah, a little bit like that.
Yeah, but I mean, it's like it's in this situation.
It's like for me, it's they're so desperate to
have people thinking about Justice League and
the eventual movie that like everything they're
doing is for that. Whereas for me, like all the
other ones were good enough on their own. Like,
yeah, they were all building towards the Avengers.
But like they weren't consumed with that where
this one is just like, it seems like all their
attention is just like rushing and rushing and
pushing to try to get to this Justice League
movie that I don't know. I just have a bad feeling
about all this. I mean, I I'm not mean the title
is a title. I'm not. It doesn't really change.
Like to me, the whole like subtitle I think is
normal when it comes to X -Men movies. I mean,
not X -Men movies, but comic book movies. Like
no one calls X -Men to X -Men to X -Men United.
They just say X two or so there. I mean, it's
not that big of a deal. Um, you mentioned captain
america the first avenger and I think that clearly
was More of an implication because of the worry
of how captain america would sell overseas So
it's like, all right, let's throw the avengers
on there. Some people know but uh, yeah I mean
it to me. It's just it's just indicating what
we already know Yeah, i'm a little surprised
they went with batman or superman and not like
man of steel the dark knight rises or whatever,
but uh Sure. I mean, I know They have I just
think it's funny that superman gets second billing
in his own sequel. So Yeah, that's true. I do
like the logo. I like what they did with the
Superman and the Batman Images I guess that's
kind of that's uh, that's like taking straight
out of the comic books actually, okay? I'm pretty
close, you know gotcha And then we also had a
story I don't know which which of us is bigger
Cohen brothers fans out of the four of us, but
Interesting topic here that Steven Spielberg
is doing a Cold War thriller with Tom Hanks attached
as one of the main stars, and apparently this
is going to be involving the Coen brothers. I
don't know if we've ever seen that combination
before. Dan, Tom Hanks hasn't appeared in any
Coen Brothers stuff, has he? Geez, no, not that
I can think of, unless it's something they wrote.
They've written a lot that you may not even realize,
but I can't think of anything off my head. I
don't say anything to do with the road to perdition,
but mine going to go with no. And I'm sure for
I'm sure if I'm wrong, I'll be corrected in the
comments. But I don't know. I just find that
interesting combination. I like Coen Brothers.
I like Spielberg and I like Hanks. So I guess
throw them all together and see what comes out.
How big of a how big a Coen Brothers fans is
everybody? Nate, do you like the Coen Brothers?
Yeah, I mean, I've seen a lot of their movies,
not all of them. Also. Tom Hanks wasn't the lady
killers. I just looked that up. Oh, yeah, that's
right but No, probably No Country for Old Men
is my favorite one of theirs Raising Arizona
is really good. But yeah, I like them. What about
you Matt? So the only movie I've seen of theirs
I can even remember even a little bit of is Oh
Brother like I saw Big Lebowski when I was like
eight and Fargo when I was like six Why are you
watching Fargo at six dude my parents would all
Pop it in a rated movie and I would just come
down and get pizza in this hangout It's the way
to do it. Okay. Yeah, so I think I've seen I
think I've seen oh brother That's the one I can
remember at all Dan you're a big fan, right?
Yeah, definitely. I mean I love Barton Fink a
Brother you like you mentioned Fargo Colts blood
simple the first movie even like one of my favorites
is Miller's crossing which is One of their lesser
not lesser, but lesser known films. It didn't
wasn't very successful and I loved Inside Lewin
Davis last year. So I think honestly they're
they're Easily in like the top three of directors
going today at least American directors So we'll
have to wait and see what that film shakes out
to be as far as like the mode and the tone of
that Another one apparently trouble with Ant
-Man director Edgar Wright exits Marvel's Ant
-Man over creative differences I can't speak
much because I don't necessarily know a lot about
Edgar Wright, but I guess it's interesting that
there's obviously something going on behind the
scenes that's causing a stir in the Ant -Man
universe. So maybe something for Ant -Man fans
to pay attention to. What do you think, Dan?
Marvel just doesn't like directors. They always
have issues with directors. It's like the fifth
time this has happened. This kind of really bums
me out because I am a big Edward Edgar Wright
fan. I mean, it's John of the Dead, The World's
End. I mean he's only in trying to uh, uh scott
pilgrim spot. Yeah scott pilgrim and the hot
fuzz all liked all his movies so far and I'm
worried about this because he's been behind this
movie since like 2006 He's been like the driving
force behind it He came up with a lot of the
concept of it And it worries me because I was
really looking forward to this so fully because
he was attached to it. So him jumping out I think
it's a it's a big loss for marvel. Um, and I
I don't know whether they're gonna get to replace
him, but yeah I'm disappointed for sure. Yeah,
I agree completely Yeah, I mean it'd be interesting
to learn a little bit more about it as far as
later on as to what? What the issues were I'm
gonna say yes as he's been involved with this
sense about for about eight years And the idea
of an Ant -Man film and then meetings and coming
up with everything so Definitely has done the
brunt of the work for this and now obviously
someone else is gonna take over You know just
just over a year before it's supposed to come
out in July of next year So that's kind of some
shoes to fill as far as taking over something
that's been so long in the making I haven't seen
most of Edgar Wright's films, unfortunately So
you saw Scott Pilgrim, right? I like that, but
I haven't seen I haven't seen like a world's
end Yeah, I haven't seen that or how fuzz or
no you did we watched it together world's end.
No, we watched this There was too many movies
last year that were about the world ending Go
ahead there's is the one where they go to the
bar isn't there they have the bar pub crawl.
Yeah, I did not see that one. Oh, you didn't
I thought you know I saw the other one with all
the comedians in it. Oh, okay. You can describe
it both ways. My guess is that he he got all
those ants in an ant farm and those fellows didn't
grow nothing. That joke goes to Mitch Hedberg,
who is the greatest comedian of all time. I don't
know, man. I haven't seen any of his stuff, but
I'm sure he's great and that hopefully they get
someone that's as good as him. Alright, two more
stories for us. Rumor out there that Alfonso
Cuaron is going to be directing a prequel to
The Shining. Dan, thoughts about his combination
of Alfonso Cuaron with The Shining or the need
for a prequel to The Shining? There is a million
needs for one I Don't know that seems kind of
I like I mean I'll like a fondle of Ron and I
I wonder if he's gonna do that because I think
he was just tied to like the new Harry Potter
stuff that's Supposed to be happening. So right.
He's definitely definitely very popular right
now with movies trying to get him on board with
their film or with their ideas Yeah, I don't
know I Sure, I mean, I'd probably see it, but
I don't think there's a need for it. I'm not
a huge Shining fan. I know it's kind of sacrilegious
because it's Kubrick, but I don't know. I'm not
as in love with that movie as a lot of people,
but I don't. It seems really just kind of unnecessary.
Mad or Nate, any need for a prequel to The Shining?
It's about a guy who writes a book and everything's
successful, and then he meets a chick and then
the movie ends. So no need for a prequel? No.
Getting into some trailer talk, there's quite
a few trailers actually that were released in
the last week including some new ones for Guardians
of the Galaxy and Jupiter Ascending. We also
got even though Foxcatcher was originally supposed
to come out I think over a year ago, I guess
they had delayed it until this year and now they're
gonna start reshowing trailers for that. Then
we had Wish I Was Here, Kingsman the Secret Service
which for me played before X -Men, Happy Christmas,
Life of Crime, some new teasers for the animated
film, Big Hero 6, and a bunch of others that
will be in the episode post. I'll start with
Dan. Any trailers that you saw this week that
you found interesting or trailers that you saw
before, X -Men? Well, the one that... I mean,
the trailer wasn't anything special, but Foxcatcher,
I really want to see. Mainly because of the cast
and it's... By bennett mailer and he did money
ball and I really liked money ball and it got
a lot It just premiered at can I think and it
got a lot of praise so i'm looking forward to
that But the trailer wasn't really anything much.
Um The king's been the secret service I that
did play before my ex x -men as well Not sure
what to make of it calling for doing that type
of role It's by matthew vaughn who I like as
a director a lot. I mean excellent first class
kick -ass layer cake, which was you know, there's
it's like a Kid version of James Bond in a way.
I don't know. It could be good I was surprised
on that one that that I hadn't heard anything
about it until also in the trailer showed up
because that doesn't usually happen No, no and
Big Hero 6 I'm liking what Disney's been doing
with their animation since they did tangled and
Wreck -It Ralph and frozen last year and They're
now kind of doing a Marvel movie. I didn't know
nothing about Big Hero 6 or the comic or anything
about it But that has me intrigued I love the
way that they that they show in that little teaser
the guy trying to Pick up the soccer ball. Yeah
It reminds me a lot of like the teaser they have
for frozen which was like the I don't remember
their names was a snowman and the Reindeer and
they're like on the ice and stuff. It's a lot
of physical comedy It's very Pixar X X and Pixar
hasn't been like Pixar lately And I think Disney's
kind of regained that like crown. So I that has
me intrigued and then I guess just so I can stop
talking, the last one was the new Woody Allen
movie, just because I like the idea of Woody
Allen teaming up with Emma Stone. I think she
has the classic, looking at some of the great
performances Woody Allen has gotten out of women.
She has a similar personality, so I'm kind of
looking forward to that partnership. Yeah, I
agree. It looked interesting. I'm not usually
a big fan of Woody Allen's but the trailer did
seem a little bit interesting to me I'm also
for some reason interested to to see Happy Christmas
From oh, yeah, that's good. Yeah from the same
people that did drinking buddies and it stars
Anna Kendrick and I love Anna Kendrick so Watch
anything that she's in probably so that one looked
interesting to me as well I did not get to see
the updated or the newest Jupiter Ascending trailer,
but I did see the Guardians of the Galaxy, the
most recent trailer that also obviously played
before X -Men, and I just really like the feel
of that. It so much reminds me of the same type
of feel I get. I'm not trying to compare it to
this at all, but like the same type of feel that
you get like before you're watching Spaceballs
or just like a fun like... We're not gonna take
ourselves too serious. It's just gonna be like
sit back and have some fun I don't know. I like
the vibe that's been happening with Guardians
of the Galaxy What do you guys feel about that
one? From what I've seen it's exactly what I
wanted from it like I've read some of the comic
books are a lot more serious than that movie
and You know, I'm a stickler for being close
to source material, but I don't think you need
to in this one I think it looks good, but I can't
wait Was happy that they had their base nowhere
because it's Celestial head which makes me excited
because if they have Celestials in the Marvel
Cinematic Universe that would be really cool,
but I That was a little bit of surprise. I wasn't
expecting How do you feel about the Guardians
of the Galaxy one night? Oh, I'm really I'm really
excited for that one The only thing that was
a little weird for me was when Bradley Cooper
was talking as the raccoon. It just didn't mesh
right I felt But that might be... I'll have to
see the movie. But it didn't sound like a raccoon
was talking. It sounded like Bradley Cooper was
talking and then there was a raccoon moving his
mouth. So that was a little weird for me. What
about some of the other trailers that might have
caught your eye? Anything else that we hadn't
brought up? No, but definitely the Woody Allen
one. I love Woody Allen. One of my favorite movies
is Love and Death that he did. It's a super dumb
movie, but I like it. What about anybody any
other trailers that any of us did not bring up
that somebody wanted to mention before we move
on? Alright so for all those trailers and to
get your own peek at them just check out the
episode post we'll have links to the YouTube
trailers for those so you can save you some work
and just find them all in one spot. And with
that we're gonna take a quick break and we will
be back with our main attraction X -Men Days
of Future Past. I don't want your future! Alright
and welcome back back but today we'll be discussing
X -Men Days of Future Past but before we get
into our main attraction has anyone been watching
anything else this week? Nate, what did we watch
on Friday? We watched Mystery Men on Friday.
That's right. The movie we talked about in the
last podcast we were talking about? It was two
ago because we said we were going to watch it
the same time we watched Batman but we ran out
of time on Batman night so we watched it this
week. Yeah. That's a fun film. Yeah, yeah, I
couldn't remember it from the time I had watched
it when it was new so it was good to go back
I also saw bits of I can't say I saw a hundred
percent but both Princess and the Frog and kiss
kiss bang bang And I will be sitting down to
rewatch kiss kiss bang bang And I hope maybe
we can do it on one of these Fridays because
I think that film looked like it was gonna Be
a lot of fun if I had got to see the whole thing
Did we watch anything, Nate? We watched Stripes.
Oh yeah, we watched Stripes. I love Stripes.
Yeah. It's a lot longer than I thought it was.
Well, we watched the extended edition with all
the deleted scenes. Yeah, for those of you that
don't know, obviously other films have probably
done this too, but there's the extended version
of Stripes when you watch it. It just puts up
like this symbol every time one of the non -theatrical
scenes comes up and it's like, hey, cut scene's
starting right now. Um, and you know, most of
them are what you usually see for your deleted
scene. It's like, you know, a minute or two minutes
of stuff that sometimes is important. Sometimes
isn't. There's a cut scene in stripes. That is
literally like 10 to 15 minutes long and, and
has like an entire different whole plot aspect
that you wouldn't even know happened if you watched
like the regular one, like because they're on
an army base and this isn't necessarily this
one. I think in the movie has been out for like
30 years. Um, But they're obviously on the army
base doing their basic training and whatnot.
And at one point Harold Ramis and Bill Murray
leave the army base. This is not included in
the theatrical release. They leave the army base.
They like get on a plane because Harold Ramis
is tripping on acid or something. And then like
an actual like legit Air Force or army group
comes on the plane and they like convince them
that they're supposed to be there. And then they
like get pushed out of the plane and they like
land in the middle of a forest with some like
What kind of cartel was that? I think it was
supposed to be like Colombian or something. Yeah.
And then they have they're like chatting with
the Colombians and like all doing drugs or whatever.
And then they like escape during a dance off
and then somehow get back to the plane and come
all the way back to the camp. And all that's
just a deleted scene. Never happened. I was questioning
the whole time. I'm like, wait a second. Is this
still a deleted scene? Did they forget to say
that this is where it ended? Just interesting.
It was one of the most interesting deleted scenes
I think I've ever seen. And they do make a reference
to it later. That makes you kind of realize that
they were referencing to that, but they have
a way around it so that it didn't matter that
the scene was out. But yeah, I love stripes.
I don't know. What did you think of stripes in
general, Nate? I liked it. It had a great like
it works well as a movie because it has great
characters and great like plot and But the thing
with with comedies is when you go back and you
watch a really old comedy. It's probably not
as punchy as it originally was because comedy
is just the sort of thing that keeps evolving
and Just because of the way comedy works. It's
like if something is old and you've heard it
then it's not funny anymore. So you kind of have
to keep up with the new stuff to see good comedy,
but But I still think it works great as a film.
It's a it's really really fun. I can watch a
bill Murray do just about anything Yeah, especially
back in that time period So that was that was
all the films. I saw I don't know Matt did you
see anything else? I didn't watch any movies
But I would like to plug the fact that Hulu has
Sailor Moon up for like the first time ever and
I watched a bunch of that excellent Well, I did
see a kill Bill volume one and two And yeah,
Kevin, you just came home. I was like, oh, is
this Kill Bill? And I was like, yeah. And then
you sat down and it was like at the very end
of Kill Bill volume two. And you were just watching
it like, oh, this is good. And I was like, have
you seen this movie? And you were like, no. Like,
what the heck were you doing? You should think
you missed out on the first five hours of the
movie. So they shut it off. So I didn't see any
more. That is one that can be ruined. Like, yeah.
Anyway, no, I'm just kidding me Dan. Do you see
anything this week? I did see one thing and we'll
go a great detail exactly They have a review
at keycast theater comm that's snowpiercer. I
know you guys talked about the trailer a few
weeks back It's actually it's been released overseas
when the kids come over here yet, but it is The
idea behind it is there after a global warming
experiment to try to fix it goes wrong The entire
world is frozen and only people alive are on
top of this in there or in this train Highly
advanced train called the snowpiercer. It's based
on a french graphic novel and as well because
i'm a big fan of the director He is the korean
south korean director. He did one of my favorite
films in 2010 called mother also did the host
which is a really good like campy, uh disaster
like monster movie Um, I know you guys are talking
about like you love the old godzilla films and
like that type of feel if you do I would highly
recommend the house because it's very reminiscent
of that type of stuff and As a director. He has
a lot of quirkiness to him. He has a lot of like
kind of um His comedy is very Subversive at times
I guess but I really like snow pierce is a great
deal I know when you guys talked about the trailer
you mentioned that it looked like it could be
very heavy -handed And it is but it's almost
so heavy -handed that it's not anymore. It's
just it makes you aware of what it's trying to
do It sets up its allegorical like framework
and it goes from there. Um, some fun set in pieces
It's just really like good genre film. I compared
it to like a john carpenter back in the day where
it's just it's You know a little bit on the cheap
side some of the special effects aren't necessarily
all that fantastic, but it's a lot of fun It's
got a unique story. It kind of really uses that
framework of A world inside a train. It does
some fun things with it And there's a lot of
good characters and Chris Evans is really good
in it a lot of different talent in it I mean
it at Harris even a Paris for a short bit So
I definitely recommend that and that's there
is something you need to see in theaters But
once it comes to like home media, you might want
to check that out I'm just impressed with how
knowledgeable you are at our past episodes. I'm
appreciative that you're listening. But yeah,
I think that would look like it would be an interesting
one to check out once it comes, you know, red
box or on demand or something like that. I'm
not going to lie, he just sold me on it and I
looked up the host came out in 2005. Yeah, about
that, I believe so. It's it's on Amazon, so I'll
be able to watch that too. All right. So it's
very uh, he it's I'm sure some people might think
it's corny in some ways But I think it's like
it knows what it's doing and like I said, the
special effects aren't amazing, but they're effective
and they're at least Effective in what they're
trying to do. So All right. So I guess we can
get into our main attraction. It sounds about
right, right? Yep All right, so I spend days
of future past directed by brian singer starring
pretty much everyone ever Michael Fassbender
Patrick Stewart all these different casts A lot
of hype going into this one, like I mentioned,
was my most anticipated movie of the year. And
I guess we'll kind of go around here. I'm kind
of curious about what your anticipation level
was and what you what your overall thoughts were
of X -Men days, the days of future past. I don't
I wasn't really anticipating it that much. I've
never been a huge, huge fan of the X -Men movies.
They've just kind of been. Fun distractions and
then once like an Avengers movie would come out
get more into that one but I Ended up liking
this one a whole lot probably more than any other
one I've seen but Kevin what about you? As we
talked about when we talked about our most anticipated
films, this is obviously very high on my list
as well and I Don't know like out of The whole
I love time travel. I know it's hard to do well
in films and it causes a lot of problems as we
read in the article the other week about what
you call it never going to be doing another time
travel story ever in his life. I just like the
idea of it. I also like that it's being done
by a franchise that had a misstep along the way.
Couples. So it's like their way of correcting
them possibly. But even more so for me, I was
just looking forward to seeing the two different
casts basically interact or share screen time,
et cetera, with the first class, the younger
versions, and obviously the ones that we're used
to in the first three X -Men films. And I like
X -Men. I don't know a lot about the background
between them. I don't... know the comic history
of them there's probably a lot of characters
that appeared in this film that I don't have
a clue who they were and I'll probably be asking
you guys multiple questions in the next half
hour to 45 minutes or however long we talk about
it to try to get clarification on some things
but my anticipation level was high and I don't
feel like I was disappointed too much walking
out I didn't really have major issues or problems
with it so yeah I enjoyed the film and I'm not
I'm interested to see where this discussion goes,
but what about you Matt? Well Honestly, I'm looking
forward more to you asking me questions about
the comic books that I was this movie at all
I came in like I remember when my boss first
told me about it like I don't know five months
ago He's like yeah, I do a movie. I said a Wolverine
back in time. I was like whoa Did we jump a shark
when I didn't get told? terrible And when I watched
the trailers, I turned to my friends, I was like,
are you seeing this? They're doing this in a
movie? And they're like, yeah, it looks awesome.
I'm like, no, no, it doesn't. So I went in with
very low expectations. And then I watched First
Class last week, and it didn't really sell me
on the series, although I really, I don't know
if I'd ever seen Fassbender or anything, and
he did a really good job, and McAvoy did a really
good job. And it's like, I wasn't super impressed,
but it wasn't bad. So. You know, I could I could
get nothing but up from where my opinion was
going in So what do you think of it overall?
Oh overall, um, yeah, probably the most enjoyable
x -men movie in a decade Interesting Well, I
guess I guess I said I was really highly anticipating
this and I was a huge fan of x -men first class
Honestly, I thought honestly it's probably in
my book maybe the best marvel movie bar none
mainly because it it It's powered mostly by its
characters and it doesn't really get too involved
in the plot. And I just loved the relationship
between McAvoy and James McAvoy, McElfaispender.
I just, I think they're just two acting heavyweights
who are giving better performances than really
any other Marvel movie. So that really had me
excited and knowing that they're kind of combining
both of these casts and seeing how that's gonna
go. And yeah, I did overall really enjoy X -Men
Days of Future Past. I still think I like X -Men
First Class better just because I feel it's a
tighter movie. But overall, I think it considering
all the different things you have going on here,
you basically have two adventure movies going
at the same time. And then you're throwing in
time travel. So many things can go wrong. Such
a huge cast. It's but it all works. I think it's
very effective. It balances both sides really
well. It gets into like the heart of the characters
I think one thing the extra movies have done
better than the Marvel movies and really any
other comic movies besides maybe The Nolan Batman
movies. It's thematic. That is a lot sharper
than those. There's more to it It has relationships
that mean something and it has Like real -world
implications where something like the Avengers
is fun piece of entertainment, but it's not very
deep And that's what I've always liked about
the X -Men franchise Going back from its inception
from the first movie. So So yeah, that's my overall
beginning thoughts, but I guess I know how we
want to start this conversation There's a lot
to kind of get into But I guess let's start with
you know, what what made it very good like what
what did we what first came out? I'm trying to
think of how it's a little rusty here. I apologize
If you're asking what kind of things stood out
to us most and what kind of things made us enjoy
the film the most, I think some of it you're
touching on, but there's just a bunch of actors
that are really fun to watch in this film. I
mean, Patrick Stewart and, I mean, you talked
about how Fassbender and McEvoy interact. It's
so interesting that they got such a good pair
to interact as the young version, but they have
an even on par or better pair as the older versions
because seeing Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen,
I'm getting the right old person, right? Yeah,
you're right. Seeing those two interact is just
about as fun. Not as much screen time in this
film as you would expect since it was kind of
taking off with the first -class Crew more so
but just seeing though all four of those people
and I mean Hugh Jackman's basically was made
for this role I Don't know how they could have
gotten anybody else to be a more perfect Wolverine
I'm not saying all his films have been perfect
as the Wolverine, but but he fits that part so
well. So I mean, there was just fun acting going
on all over the place, not to mention Peter Dinklage.
They're just fun people to watch, and almost
every scene there is a cool actor to just observe
and enjoy. So I think that was one of the things
that did it for me, but also just seeing the
number of different mutants that they show. It
always had you kind of looking to see, you know,
the different... personalities that they were
bringing up, even if someone like me doesn't
know who they all are. That was fun. But what
did you like the best about it, Nate? Probably
the characters. Yeah, I do. I did like how comic
bookie the plot was. It was like. It was like
dumb comic book writing, but in a fun way, and
it didn't. like make it a bad movie or anything
like like it. I don't know how to explain it.
It's just like we're going to throw in time travel
and we're going to throw in like post apocalyptic
stuff and we're going to throw in like giant
robots and it's like, cool. I'm down with all
of this. Like it had one of the most like fun
plots of a movie. And I don't know, I like how
convoluted it actually was. I don't know if like
regular movie going people that you know when
normally go see like they saw the Avengers because
everyone talked about the Avengers if they were
to go see this if they would be like on board
with all the crazy stuff happening like like
the time travel and stuff like I don't know how
they would react but I I live for that kind of
weird stuff and and plus time travel is my favorite
thing of like if you can throw time travel in
it in a in a story, I'm with you. What about
you, Matt? Well, I think we can all agree that
the characters are the shining thing in this
movie. I love actually the future stuff where
it's like, they're not going to give you the
names. You're going to see the powers only when
they're in action. They're not going to explain
anything. It's just like, just throw all of this
huge gallery of mutants at these sentinels and
we'll just watch it. And it's a spectacle and
it's fun. And that's exactly what I wanted. And
they were talking about how it's like well, maybe
we threw too many mutants in and they cut out
a couple of mutants I've heard that they shot
things with other guys and just cut it out entirely
And it's like they could have added another 10
mutants you wouldn't hear me complaining as long
as they did You know spend an hour explaining
them and everything. Yeah I think you I'm glad
you brought that up just interject real quick
because I thought about that that was one of
my first actual like thoughts I had as I was
watching the film is I was thinking back and
I love how this whole franchise has done that
at times where they don't necessarily feel the
need to hit you in the face with who it is or
have someone calling by name or do something
like that like there is I guess some form of
subtlety and how they insert mutants into this
film. I'm not saying at times they don't do that
but they're not afraid it seems like over the
course of this whole franchise to just have characters
that you have to figure out who they are on your
own or you you know for the more knowledgeable
people they would recognize them and know without
being told but it's just like it's kind of a
cool element that it's not just like in your
face like hey this is this person with this power
now we're going to show you this like it's just
in the background and it's I like that better.
I think that's one of the benefits of having
mutants is the fact that you don't have to have
some sort of factory accident to explain everyone's
power. It's just it's just like they're born
that way and just. Yeah, that's the exact reason
why they created the X -Men is because they got
tired of making origin stories. Yeah, yeah. So
it's a huge help because Matt mentioned it with
the future sequences and all the mutants. And
I loved how like they brought Bishop up and you
can tell that, hey, He absorbed other people's
powers and they just show you that they don't
have to go to an explanation of it I love blink
like I thought the use of her power in this was
awesome and I hope we get a blink movie because
I just loved how they used her and I love her
that character since she was she came up in each
of apocalypse so hoping she comes back because
I just loved how they displayed her power I think
it led to a lot of creative uses of their powers
and that's one thing too I think I like about
X -Men over the Avengers though. I love the Avengers.
It's a fun movie is that the X -Men have powers
that are unique within ourselves. When you look
at the Avengers, it's a lot of punching and kicking,
but the powers of the X -Men give them different
abilities and they can be more creative with
things like teleportation or Magneto, something
like his use of guns and not to give it anything
away, but in this particular moment where he
gets kind of tackled and there's a gun like,
oh, he's out there shooting, but oh, no, he's
Magneto. So he's able to still shoot the gun
and then you see him use the bullet. I like the
creativity of his powers and what they do with
it. I think that gives active sequences that
don't become repetitive. They can kind of change
things up from from each moment. Matt, getting
back to some of the others, and I agree with
everything that Dan just said, like I like the
uniqueness of what they're able to do. And I
think there is some more creative stuff with
even some more characters that we haven't talked
about yet that we'll get to in a second. But,
Matt, you had some other things that you liked
about it, too, right? Yeah. Cut I'll cut you
off. So I didn't want to give you not a chance
to finish I don't know. Um, I think mystique
is a character that Like didn't get as I don't
know. I don't remember the old ones as much as
I probably should I have they were 15 years ago
so I'm coming some slack, but uh, like I don't
remember mystique being as Strong and independent
as she was in this and like in the comic books
like she's way more independent strong And you
know, you need we need leading females and stuff
and I like that when they do that And so I like
that element of it. If only they could cast a
really strong leading fumo that wasn't the bad
guy. Wow. She was like gray. I mean, she was
it's like being like the bad guy who wanted to
kill Hitler, you know. That's the other thing,
that actually brings up a great point about X
-Men though. Like there is, and you guys will
know more and maybe I'm completely off on this,
but just from the actual theatrical films, there
seems to be a lot of grayness. There's not necessarily
always your cut and dry, black and white, good
guys and bad guys because I think what Dan brought
up before, the plots and the whole idea of the
X -Men and the mutants and humans, et cetera,
there's just a lot more. Like I don't know like
debates and issues that are It's not just like
it's not just cut and dry and like there's It
gets into deeper elements that it doesn't necessarily
hit you in the face with but but deeper human
elements and You know even like a character like
Magneto like, you know He's definitely not just
cut and dry black and white bad guy good guy
and I think mystique has that too. And there's
been some other characters throughout the franchise
that have that. So that's kind of an interesting
thing, too, is there's not always necessarily
just that bad guy, like stereotypical role. I
think that made sense. Yeah. Basically, the motivations
behind some of the more villains in some of the
movies are legitimate concerns, because you think
about it when you have someone like Magneto and
you're trying to protect the country. You do
have that fine line. OK, what's. you know, what's
protection and once you enter like a totalitarian
state where you have too much control. So I think
it allows that to happen because it's like, yeah,
this guy can kind of just walk in and try to
indicate like a nuclear destruction just because
he feels like it. So maybe there is some legitimacy
here. So I think that helps it out a lot because
there is something there that's not just, hey,
I want to take over the world. You know, there's
something that's legitimate to build upon. Yeah,
you know and another thing I like about this
film that obviously the element of time travel
allows you to do is Goodness gracious. They're
doing something that the Avengers universe sure
hasn't done and that was kill off people Obviously
they can you know bring them all back with the
time travel element but just to see the Idea
of them dying on screen call me morbid, but I
enjoy that Yeah, it gives you a feeling that,
you know, hey, they actually can die, even if
at the end of it, no one's dead. You can be like,
well, they can die. Right. They're not they're
not gods. And there were some interesting death
scenes. Yeah, I mean, it definitely, you know,
rode that PGPG 13, you know, rating very strictly.
Yeah, seriously, there was a couple of scenes
that I was like, is this an R rated movie? And
then they said, like. Like the S word and the
F word in the same scene. And I was just like,
OK, this is an already X -Men movie. What's going
on? Yeah. They were on the borderline. They use
their one F word effectively, just like first
class did. Yeah. Other things that people liked
a lot about this film or moments or elements
about it that they wanted to bring up. One thing
I did like we talked about within. The when I
first actually saw this movie twice the first
time I walked I walked out I was there's almost
so much it was hard to kind of digest everything
that happened. I'm like think I got everything
but I wasn't really sure but I think watching
a second time helped a lot just to see all the
little tidbits. I also just like a lot of the
little nods to the past films. I know within
the X -Men movie franchise continuity is not
their best friend. There's a lot of issues if
you try to match up the timeline it's impossible.
Like I mentioned I think they're freaking getting
the fact that X -Men first or that Wolverine
origins ever happened because of this, the ages
and stuff like that. But I liked how, yes, Wolverine
was brought into the past and I was worried that
it's OK, Wolverine didn't come and save the day
and not to give anything away. How that necessarily
didn't just happen. I liked how they had to make
things more complicated. And I wasn't expecting
the bone claws, which I'm not the biggest fan
of. But I think in the end, I kind of got why
they did it. So it wasn't just Wolverine coming
in like, you know, destroying all the sentinels
and the day is over. I think it made things a
little bit more complicated for them. And too,
I wanted to bring up a couple people that we
haven't talked about or a couple things and I
don't know how much of a spoiler this will be
or not. So if you don't want to be spoiled, you
might want to proceed with caution, I guess.
But did anybody find it interesting? Because
obviously we had, if you take the original X
-Men trilogy, Most of the characters from that
appear at some point or another Except for Mystique
never appears, right? Like old mystique right
future mystique She did in the first class for
a brief little cameo or we're back and remain
stay most dead But right but in this one even
though she was one of the main characters in
the the past portion of it She doesn't appear
at all in the future, correct? No, though if
you look at X -Men 3 was because she looked maybe
because technically she lost her powers in that
so Okay, I just I was I was thinking about that
after the fact It didn't necessarily come up
to my mind at all during the film But then afterwards
I was like thinking about the actors that are
playing the young version compared to the old
version I'm like wait a second There was no old
version of Mystique in this one and the other
one I wanted to bring up and you can feel free
to talk about either character But we haven't
talked about Quicksilver at all. Oh Yeah, you
make a good point there Which I know like going
into this everything I saw about Quicksilver.
I thought looked awful like his Whole portrayal.
I thought like the all the marketing stuff behind
Quicksilver was pretty Like laughable at times,
but I was I mean I was eat my words because I
thought he had maybe the best scene the entire
movie Which is probably the only moment in this
that had any sort of levity everything else was
kind of dark But I think he brought a lot of
fun to the movie. So What about you guys? What
was your opinion on Quicksilver? I think he did
it really well there where it's like, I don't
know, it looked really dumb and stupid in the
trailers and everything, but once he got into
it, it was fun and it worked and it wasn't over
the top, which it really could have been with
a little bit more probably. Also, there was that
moment where it's like, wow, he seems really
overpowered. If they keep him around for the
rest of this movie, it's gonna be just him winning.
That did come to my mind about When they got
too closer towards the end scene, I'm like, why
didn't they not just bring Quicksilver with them?
He would have solved a lot of this. There's there's
plenty of moments like that in the movie where
it's just like they really should have just used
Quicksilver the whole time. And I don't even
remember why he left. He was just like, hey,
I helped you guys out. All right. Later. Well,
he's like, I mean, they can't drag him around
through government things and it'd be totally
unfair. I was uh, I was listening to other people
talk about the movie and they were they were
saying like the same thing like Like kind of
like not They were they were saying bad about
it how they were like, oh, well, they had this
huge plot hole where they had this really overpowered
character and they didn't use them and it's just
like Yeah, but sometimes you just got to write
that way to make a better movie like I don't
know people nitpick too much sometimes If you
think that just wait till it picks when I get
bring mine up Oh, good. I really enjoyed Quicksilver
a lot. I thought his character was well done.
I thought the scenes with him, like Dan said,
added a little bit of humor slash levity to the
film, which was needed from a film that otherwise
was relatively, like you said, heavy. But I guess
some of my first questions here and obviously
as everybody knows it's listened to my weekly
I am a comic book Ignoramus So I don't know the
history of a lot of these characters, and I don't
know what they refer to at certain times during
the movies So I need to ask you guys a couple
questions about Quicksilver He is Magneto's son
correct his oldest child well arguably I think
Polaris might be older, but yeah, okay, and then
how old was Michael Fassbender's version of Magneto?
Well in this he was a kid during World War two
he was like ten years old so You know that's
legit. Yeah, he's like 40 now Okay Michael Fassbender
looks so young And then he makes Did what was
the reference that he made to his father during
the film? Oh you control metal my mom knew a
guy who could do that Did he say that yeah But
we talked about this right after the movie Nate.
I Thought like I thought you were saying they
could have added that in not My further question
was and I brought this up Is magneto is not aware
that that is his son? No, and there's no There
you go No, he doesn't I don't think he does or
he seems unaware of it and there's also in the
climax. There's a An image of like the like Quicksilver
with his sister who can begin a student scarlet
witch and also use his mom the background And
she's obviously looking at the screen that has
Magneto on it You can see that she's kind of
shocked at what she's saying. So I think it's
just kind of tying everything together Okay,
second question not about Cook Silver and I guess
again some some small spoiler alerts here, but
at one point Magneto is trying to retrieve his
helmet and they're in a Secured facility where
his helmet is being kept behind glass in a secret
room vault slash whatever There's a variety of
other things in there. What was the significance
of those things? Well, one of them were the wings
of pixie or well, okay, so in the previous movie
first class They had a character with pixie wings
that they called angel Which one didn't make
a whole lot of sense because they already had
an angel mutant in x3 But then to she looked
in acted exactly like a character called pixie
who has pixie wings So they were angels wings
was one of them. I don't know what the other
one was The other thing was the thing Havoc had
an x1 first class. Oh, yeah. Yeah be designed
for him to kind of control his power, who was
also had a brief like little cameo in this. Yeah.
All right. That helps. OK. And again, it's been
a long time since I've seen the other X -Men
films I wanted to see first class right before
this, but it is just not possible for me to do
so. As far as all of the side characters and
the different mutants that showed up whether
it be cameos or unspoken parts or even small
spoken parts What were some of your guys's favorite
characters that you saw show up outside of the
the main cast? I'm guessing to start with Matt
What were some of the the people that you obviously,
you know Probably recognize most of them and
knew who they were like what were some of the
favorite people that you saw show up? Well, as
I think I've said in every mwire for like the
last month, I like Blink is and probably my top
three favorite means of all time So the fact
that we got her was great, but then how much
and how well they used her was just amazing and
that was one thing that really upset me was of
all the cameos of towards the end like that,
but anyway So that was my favorite I exist actually
where my nitpick is is the guy who looks like
the human torch I actually had to go on IMDB
and search who it was cuz I was pretty sure it
was just gonna be Sunfire The thing that'd be
great about using Sunfire is that's his power
set and also They could bring in a Japanese guy
because he's Japanese So then they could you
know add diversity because that's one of those
things Hollywood is always looking for a chance
to do Instead they used Sunspot who's Brazilian
and different Who's again same power set but
less known? Sunfire becomes one of the horsemen
of apocalypse. So having him and then using him
again in the next movie Would have been a good
idea. I think they didn't do that because he's
actually going to be in that big hero six movie.
Oh, is he? I didn't I didn't watch the trailers
for that. I'm sorry. He's not actually in the
trailer, but he's been in the poster images they've
been using. Oh, OK. Well, that might not be good
to use him as well. They might not have the rights
to him then, huh? Well, no, it's still Disney.
It's Disney for both of them. Way Oh, yeah, that's
right. I don't know. I yeah. All right I'm pretty
sure Sunfire is the brother of silver samurai
and didn't they use them in the x -men movie?
Yeah Some of the licensing on this is really
weird. What just like cuz they're gonna have
quick silver and the vendor so I don't know maybe
what the mutants it's like whatever yeah Marvel
for dummies book There's a diagram that has some
of the bigger characters But some of the smaller
ones when you get to like the minutiae of like
the different mutants. It's like who knows I
hope they call quicksilver Pietro and in the
X there in the Avengers because naming him Peter.
It seems I don't jingoistic or something like
we can't give him a less American name What was
the nitpick that you're gonna come up with as
far as the camera was at the end No, that was
the nitpick, not the cameos at the end, but at
the beginning. Oh, I didn't want to be spoilery,
but they didn't show Blink at the end. They kept
showing all these people at the end, and they
didn't show Blink, and that has me worried. She
was entirely 100 % pivotal to the Age of Apocalypse
story, so I can't imagine they're not going to
use her. Especially if they get a good reaction
from this film with her character as it seems
a lot of people are reacting well to it Nate
some of your favorite characters that showed
up in this film Definitely blink. I just love
the way they used your powers the I was just
thinking to myself when I was watching it just
like whoever designed or whoever Choreographed
this fight scene like played portal like they
knew exactly what they were doing But other than
that, I don't know. Ellen Page is fun to see
again, but she didn't really do much in this
movie. She held her hands up. Yeah, she held
her hands. She had one good line. Yeah, that
was about it. So late asshole or something like
that show. Yeah, Bishop looked great. But again,
didn't really get too much from him, but he looked
fantastic as a character, as as character design
goes. But I don't know other than that I think
Like the main cast is super strong Fun to watch
but yeah, what about you Dan? Well, I guess he's
not a cameo, but I like Nicholas Nicholas Holt
as Beast I do enjoy like his portrayal that character
especially again like the relationship between
him and kind of Raven and Xavier I like the warpath
a little bit. I mean he he was a little stereotypical
Native American, but That's kind of the character.
And I just like the one death scene. Well, it's
like you can tell people die at the beginning.
But I like one of the death scenes he has that
I thought was pretty cool just in how it was
handled. But and I I'm still debating, but the
look of the sentinels at sometimes I think they
look really cool at other times. I didn't like
them, but not that they're mutant characters.
But I just like the fact that we're getting them
in an X -Men movie. Finally. Oh, speaking of
other characters. Sorry, Nixon was great. Oh,
yeah, they got a great Nixon. I was just gonna
say that exact same thing. I'm like, I don't
know if you can find a better person to play
Nixon. Oh, also, I hope you go. He's a hard person
to do, too, because he's so, you know, he's such
an easy joke or he's so over the top that he
appears on screen and people just naturally laugh
at him. So I think it was effective enough. Were
you saying that? Oh, I was gonna say. Cameo I
forgot to mention was they had Kelsey Grammer
and that made me so happy I? Must have missed
that when did they do that? right at the end
He was literally just like sup Wolverine Make
up and had him say like two words and walk off
screen. It was perfect Yeah, I remember I remember
that part now I did like probably got paid more
for that than he did for the Wizard of Oz movie
He made they all didn't get credit either in
the in the film Those are all uncredited Wow
as far as Kelsey grammar and like a fancy Jansen
and James Marsden Like those are all uncredited
roles and not that it's a cameo But I like they
had a little nod in I guess we're already kind
of smiling at anyways, but near the end with
the relationship between Kitty pride and Colossus
you kind of see that they're kind of teaching
a class together. So I mean, I don't think the
actor that does Colossus is amazing. I don't
think he said an entire word for the entire movie.
But I do like that. I do like Colossus and I
did like the look of him. So. Yeah. All right.
What about what about the nitpicks? Who wants
to start with anything that they didn't like
about this film? I think Matt, you said you had
a couple. So why don't we start with you? I just
had the Sunspot Sunfire one actually, which I
totally agree. I also I mean, are we are we doing
spoilers? Like, cause I guess I could do mostly
spoiler free just the way Magneto interacted
with the sentinels was kind of like, what? I
don't know if that's, but other than that, yeah.
I don't really have that. No, I liked the way,
I liked that. That was so cool. I was somewhat,
and I guess, yeah, there is spoilers here. So
I was somewhat hoping that, that Trask. was going
to actually attempt to use it in a way and that
it just wasn't going to work. And there was going
to be that moment where it was like, why, what,
why isn't this working right? Where there would
be that realization that Magneto had done what
he did. But I kind of, I don't know, I didn't
mind how he did it. I was so confused for a while
as to why, what he was doing with the baseball
stadium. Why is he moving a baseball stadium
around and then it obviously all made sense once
He set it down, but I was just like I was so
confused for like three minutes as to what was
the purpose of this He wasn't a fan of the national
I Mean some of my some of the issues I had I
I like Peter Dinklage as an actor I think he's
a really great actor and necessarily they gave
a bad performance, but I just thought Trask as
a character was kind of Lacking. I don't know.
I was hoping more from him and it just I guess
with so much going on He kind of got lost in
the shuffle a little bit and I wasn't the biggest
fan of some of the set design for the future
sets They just look I I get there, you know It's
supposed to be this still be in like the world's
like coming to end but I just felt the set design
looked really barren like they forgot to put
things up because there's like It looked like
a little cheap. I guess I don't know but That
was my bigger. My bigger issue was just I thought
football trash didn't I was hoping for more and
they didn't really give him much to do. I can
agree with that as far as the set pieces, except
for the one that I really did like was when they
showed it from afar, where it was just shown
as like that the kind of side of the mountain
type. Yeah, that's that looked cool. I was wondering,
I guess it's not nitpick. I don't know. But there
was two things that I was thinking as I was watching
the film and one was at the very beginning. I
was worried as to how easily Hugh Jackman or
Wolverine, how easily Wolverine was able to convince
both Xavier and Magneto of his mission and how
quickly they jumped aboard. It kind of fixed
itself as the movie went on because obviously
Magneto wasn't as... cooperative, as he maybe
had first led on. But there was just a moment
at the beginning where I'm like, wait a second,
that should be harder. Like, they set it up with,
with Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen, like the
older versions, like, good luck with that. You
have to get these two guys to cooperate in a
time where they don't really want to. And it
just seemed like it was easy at first, like.
Don't know like I was I was wanting to feel more
struggle and and for it to take a little bit
longer But I guess you kind of realize what the
movie like this. They don't have a lot of time
to do stuff like that And like I said as I felt
like it somewhat fixed itself as it progressed
But my initial thought when they when he was
first doing that was that was way too easy Yeah,
I could see that like you said I think it does
kind of in almost like okay They buy into it,
but I think eventually you see there a little
bit more question there, especially Xavier. I
think Fassbender was maybe or Magneto was more
easy to buy on. But to go back, I missed this.
But to go back regarding that issue, regarding
them kind of buying into it, I do think like
the best theme in the entire movie was actually
not to spoil anything when you see one of the
past selves and the future selves kind of interact.
I thought that was like an amazing scene. And
I just love seeing like, I think Mactavoy is
a great actor. And so was Stuart. And I think
that really got into the heart of what makes
the X -Men Movies like some of my favorite films.
So I just love that motivation and how it how
that panned out But I do agree that it's like,
okay, I'm just gonna get on this airplane now
I'm like wait, you were just you know, I don't
know but I did like the reasoning he was there
I thought that was kind of cool by why I mean
either wasn't that concrete structure or whatever.
Oh, yeah Any other people that had Nate did you
have issues or anything that you questioned or
whatever throughout the film? The biggest issue
I had was the audience we were with, but that's
the movie's fault. No, I mean, there were probably
like... It's probably not the smartest written
movie in terms of having to explain everything,
but it was too much fun to care about it. It
was just a fun movie and I really enjoyed it.
Dan, any other issues that you didn't get a chance
to bring up yet? Issues are trying to think of
what else Not necessarily issues. I mean there
was a sequence in which you talked about the
sentinels and you know what happened to them
and and you see like bag, you know kind of interacting
with them and using like rail Using rails and
I thought that looked that seen I like the idea
of it, but I didn't think it looked very effective
Yeah, I can see that too in a way, but that's
really just kind of getting into Small things
but overall I mean and I guess a bigger issue
necessarily a nitpick was it though was a time
travel movie and it you you know, it's the with
X -Men you have like the idea of it being like
an allegorical Reflection of diversity and like
those issues how it didn't really use like the
past that much like it didn't really say anything
Of that time and how it was reflected. There's
a little bit regarding like man's Regarding like
man's over Trust and regarding technology because
when you have revealed the sentinels you have
Nixon quoting Oppenheimer after would be a drop
the atomic bomb I believe so I thought that was
a little bit not but overall I don't think it
really used the past that much nearly as much
as like first -class did And then my other issue,
which I don't know might not might be kind of
nitpicky or whatnot But and I know time travel
is really hard to do But I felt like possibly
there could have been more effects in the future
world of what was going on in the past world
because it seemed like, you know, Wolverine was
there for a while and stuff was happening and
interactions were happening. And there was no
like little minor things that were seemingly
being affected in the future versions of these
people. Not that we were getting a whole lot
of the world there. We were just getting that
one setting. But it seemed like there was nothing,
nothing, nothing. And then all of a sudden one
thing happens and everything changes. um again
i don't necessarily have a problem with it but
i could see like maybe it would have helped to
have like a little tiny thing happen or maybe
i'm just like a sucker for back to the future
where like people are disappearing and stuff
like that yeah you actually explain that Was
that like you wanted like a portrait of the X
-Men that he was holding in his pocket and people
I wanted one of the one of the mutants that was
fighting out there with the sentinels to just
disappear Yeah, I really I really thought that
that Wolverine was gonna disappear at one point
But no, they actually explained it where like
Ellen Page she's got her hands out and if once
she let goes then that's the new like that Then
everything changes so she has until she takes
her hands away That's why it was supposed to
be super tense when like she like almost took
her hand off That that's the thing is that like
they said that and they did set that up. I guess
like as soon as you wake up That's gonna snap
change and then when they had that moment of
like, oh is it gonna like it should have done
something like that like had Yeah Like they could
have totally done it and it would have been acceptable
in cannon universe And then I guess my only my
last thing and again. This is a total nitpick
But I was somewhat Surprised as to how long it
took the sentinels to find them In the future,
but maybe not as much time was passing Well,
I mean they were using time travel to avoid them
and then like like the the one time it's like
all of a sudden instead of like two it's a thousand
so maybe maybe they just needed that time to
gather their forces right um because maybe they
maybe their detections were like whoa this has
got every one here let's just send all of the
sentinels let's corner them you don't want to
mess with sentinels though i mean they pretty
much set themselves up to be like one of the
best fighting forces to ever grace the theater
yeah Talking about like how it kind of showed
you and didn't tell you just how in the beginning
you see how the sentinel power worked where Now
one's getting frozen and then and then you see
other ones getting heated and then they like
transverse each other's power I thought that
was kind of cool to let you know like yeah pretty
much you can't really stop them They're pretty
badass, but they do kind of look like the aliens
from science a little bit Don't know. I don't
know if I'm the only one that's all man. That
movie was great until they showed the aliens
Of course a lot, you know better rendered in
those but they just had like the I don't like
the black sheer black, you know figure or whatever
And so I guess it would be fitting again spoiler
alert for those that haven't seen it but to talk
briefly about the credit scene and opinions or
reactions to that, even though we somewhat already
knew what the next movie was going to be about.
What did you feel about the end credits scene,
Matt? I liked it. I mean, especially after Spider
-Man 2 having nothing, I was so happy that this
one had something there. I don't know. Like,
it was great. And I like that they threw out
a name. that wasn't one that would be immediately
recognizable to non comic book fans. Oh yes.
So no idea who they were showing or what they
were showing in that scene. Oh really? Are we
gonna like do you want me to tell you now or
when we're not recording? You can tell me when
we're not recording that's fine. They've already
released the name of the next movie. So I don't
know how much of a spoiler it is Yeah, it's definitely
not like a spoiler I mean, I know it's about
X -Men apocalypse and that's what we're going
to but I don't know what that I don't have no
idea what that is so they were chanting in Sabah
unur which is apocalypse his name before like
before he took apocalypse because everyone has
a Secret identity and then an alias and so he's
apocalypse But when he was the first mutant in
ancient Egypt, he was inside a nur And so that's
what they were chanting and that's who that was
with the blue skin and the four horsemen And
they they they alluded to the fact that he has
the four horsemen of the apocalypse on his team
Gotcha. Do they have like specific names that
we would know in personalities? Yeah death famine
It's uh, I can't remember them all but Sunfire
is one of them Yeah, but I mean like uh Sunfire
was famine. I don't know. There's been a few
of them. I mean, Wolverine was an agent like
a horseman of the apocalypse. He was death. And
so was Angel when he became Archangel. Yeah.
They've all kind of they've had different ones.
Gambit was even a horseman in a storyline. Most
people like to forget. But he's right. So I guess
my final thought on this film would be seeing
this film. Seeing the uncredited scene, knowing
what the title is and what the content is for
the next one. We talked about how excited we
were, how much, and we were either anticipating
or not anticipating days of future past. How
does that leave you as far as the state of, are
you excited, looking forward to, not looking
forward to the next X -Men film, Dan? I'm certainly
looking forward to it. I mean, I do, I really
like the character of Apocalypse. Actually have
a gigantic apocalypse on my desk right now The
toy so I do like him. I'm curious where they're
gonna go with it and we talked about before recording
Are they gonna do it with like in the 80s or
is it gonna be like a full -on age of apocalypse
story? Yeah, so I'm excited for sure. I more
much more I know I don't know. But yeah, I was
excited. I'm like the x -men movie So as long
as Britton Ratner is not directing I'll be there
All right Nate, what about you? Yeah, I'm excited
for it although I am I Don't know. It's like
it's exciting, but it's also kind of weird because
they're making movies to make more movies So
it's like self -perpetuating itself like they're
not like I'm a little worried that eventually
they'll get to the point where they're just making
bad movies to keep making bad movies like Because
people will go to see him it seems So there is
there was that concern that I talked with mad
about like I was like Dude, if they did what
they did in this movie, they could do this to
any movie. What's to stop them from doing this
to like the Avengers? Because, you know, man,
I don't know. It's it's it's it's a little worrisome,
but I I'm still I'm still excited for the new
one. And that. Such on what Nate just said, his
concern was like, why don't they just have a
go back in time and fix any movie when they need
to get a new cast or anything? And I don't know,
like it worked here. It worked really well. Yeah,
like like I definitely liked this movie, but
it's just like it's now it's like now that has
been done. It's like, yeah, they could do it
whenever they want. And it's like, oh, well,
I don't think that the X -Men has a leg up on
the Avengers, something X -Men did before the
Avengers did it. Yeah. Because once you introduce
the thing, a time travel, it's like, well, why
don't they always just go back in time to fix
everything? True. Pull Superman and reverse the
earth or whatever. Oh, right in the first movie
they did that. All right. All right. So any other
thoughts before we bring this discussion to an
end? Nope. All right. So I guess we'll get into
what's coming out. DVD and Blu -ray and theatrical
worldwide and all that good stuff. I lost that
list. Sorry, do you have that up Kevin? Yeah
as far as blu -ray leases there is not a whole
lot You get a collector's edition combo pack
of how to train your dragon you get the criterion
collection of the life aquatic with Steve Zizzou
And I don't really know there's a dr. Who combo
pack for dr. Who fans. It's like a It's a documentary.
I think yeah sleep away camp and sleep away camp
collector's edition combo pack stay away There's
not a lot to buy on dvd this next week. So There's
a there's a pretty good movie called cheap thrills
coming out which came out earlier this year on
demand, which is It's a pretty good dark comedy
basically about this Rich guy who gets two guys
in a bar and basically pays them lots of money
to do crazy things that kind of escalates further
and further It's a really good dark comedy that
I would recommend you may be getting at red box
if if it's there And as far as theatrical releases,
not a ton of stuff that's going to try to be
competing too much, but we do have a couple of
big releases compared to sometimes the week after
a big film like this comes out. And it's all
Thursday releases this time for the notable ones.
And that's A Million Ways to Die in the West,
Maleficent, Under the Electric Sky. And then
there was a couple that we had trailers of as
far as Friday releases, I think. The grand seduction
maybe and and one other one but uh out of a million
days to die in the west under the electric sky
maleficent and Any that you're willing to put
your money in to go see in the theater? Well,
I I probably will see maleficent I'm gonna see
million ways to die just because if we pass to
it, so I won't be paying money for it But is
it I thought edge of tomorrow was coming out
this weekend, too. I could be wrong, too but
I I do plan on seeing that I know you guys aren't
big Tom Cruise fans, but I do like Tom Cruise.
I liked Oblivion enough last year. I do think
he has a lot of bad movies and he can be crazy,
but I do like a lot of his movies. I guess the
only thing that turns it's not that he's just
batshit insane, then that turns me off of him.
But I feel like all he's doing is science fiction
films lately. He did he did Jack Reacher, which
was kind of like a knockoff of the porn that
wasn't very good. Trying to think of what else
he's done. He hasn't done much drama recently.
I mean, I think the last thing he did drama -wise
was Valkyrie, like we mentioned. But yeah. But
Edge of Tomorrow is also getting a lot of good
praise from what I've seen. I haven't really
read full reviews, but he's been doing pretty
good. ComingSoon .net is listing Edge of Tomorrow
as coming out the following week. I don't know
if they pushed it back a week or what, but it's
listed as a June 6th release in 3D, 2D, and IMAX
3D. So they might have tried to bump it to give
it a week of... of X -Men farther away from it.
I will also be seeing Maleficent for sure, that's
guaranteed. A Million Ways to Die in the West,
I don't know if there's been a film this year
yet that I've been more on the fence about. I
don't know if that's gonna be an utter piece
of crap or if it's gonna be hilarious or somewhere
in between. If I have a time, I might be able
to see it, but Maleficent would get my first
choice. Matt, I know you have a Maleficent date.
Yeah, well my my girlfriend's got a group going
to it in like two weeks I don't know if I want
to wait that long, but two weeks is long enough
that if it's good I can see it twice in two weeks
What about your interest? You want to see it
this weekend? Yeah, dude, if you want to see
it like I'm I'm down I don't want to see it,
but I'll go to a movie with you. You don't you're
not interested in Maleficent No Really? No, I
don't like Angelina Jolie. I don't. I mean, I
don't dislike her. I'm not too super impressed
by her. But I would say that of all the trailers
I've seen, that one's probably my top five most
interesting of the year. I've been interested
about that. I was definitely in my list of films
most looking forward to this year and I will
be seeing it What about your guys's opinions?
I can't remember I know you we talked about the
trailers a little bit, but now that it's actually
coming out Are either of you interested in actually
going to see a million ways to die in the West?
We need something to talk about I'll go see it
Excellent, but I'd rather see chef which had
one like So it might be I don't know how long
it'll last but we have a chance to go see that
Grand Budapest only lasted like two weeks. So
we might want to go and see chef to be just while
we got it. Yeah, that's true What is Grand Budapest
coming out on DVD? I want to do that June 28th,
I think which I've actually missed that so I'm
looking to finally catching up Oh my gosh, you
have to see it. It's my favorite movie so far
this year. I think I can agree with that And
I figured out the thing with edge of tomorrow
is coming out overseas This weekend and then
or next weekend and then you ask it's at a week
later. So one of those dealios That's common
nowadays. Yeah But it's apparently tracking really
horribly. So it's probably gonna be another bomb
for Tom Cruise. There you go All right, did you
want to get into the credit conversation for
your Yeah, we actually had quite a bit of comments
right away for Godzilla and a lot of good comments
definitely enjoyed what people had to say about
our last last podcast and you can obviously go
and check all the things out there, but we pose
a question about Films having less of a human
angle less of a human focus or just less humans
in general And there's a lot of comments to get
into I don't have time to and I don't think we
should necessarily read all of them But I thought
people made some some interesting points someone
brought up the Muppets Saying that maybe Muppets
most wanted focused on the Muppets more than
the first one which focused a little bit on Jason
Siegel and Amy Adams So that was an interesting
example that I didn't expect to see in that conversation
Obviously Transformers gets brought up because
that's an easy one for humans to be less involved
with. That's like the quintessential example
of this question, I think. Right. It's like,
yeah, we don't need all the human characters.
Any of them. So yeah, there was some good conversation.
I would just tell everybody to go to the website
and check out and maybe add your two cents on
Armageddon was one that someone brought up, which
I'm not 100 % sure. How you would have... Just
more asteroid. Just like have it be an hour and
a half of looming asteroid shots just cut back
and forth like... I guess maybe like more, you
could have less of some of the human stories,
side stories that were going on, but I don't
think you can have less actual humans in that
one, so I guess that's a different take on it
as far as maybe just less of the personal stories.
But yeah, good conversations, go on, check it
out. as well as checking out this week's episode
post in which we will have a new question. Anybody
have a question off the top of their head about
anything we talked about today that they want
to pose to the group? Nate, you had your first
question last week. Do you got another one? No.
No, I don't. I got one. I actually got two because
I got a cheeky one, which was, are we going to
do star rating on this one? And then the question
for the actual podcast or for the actual credit
conversation is. we had a bunch of really cool
characters what really cool characters do you
want to see in the next one for x -men for the
x -men i mean because that's what we talked about
for the most of uh most part of the x -men right
was all the characters so which characters that
appeared in this one do you want to see more
of or which characters that we haven't seen would
you like to see appear for the first time maybe
or if you have anything you don't want to see
that you're afraid they might show that one that's
also part of anything about x -men apocalypse
chime in and give us your thoughts. And as for
the star ratings, Dan, let's start with you.
What would you give this one? Oh, wow. That's
always tough. Apparently, yeah. Yeah, sure. I'll
cheat and I'll go last. All right. He gets to
go last then. So, Nate, you're on the spot. OK,
I'll give it a four. Four out of five. Done.
All right. No explanation. Four out of five for
Nate and Matt. Since we always like to give in
previous one, I would give first class three
and a half and then this one four. I think it
was a step in the right direction. I really enjoyed
it. Shoot. That means I'm up. I saw it so recently
that it's still fresh and I want to digest some
things about it. I'm going to have a hard time
just ranking all of the superhero films by the
time this year's over. And a lot of people are
not going to agree with my rankings of them.
But my first instinct is going to be to agree
with you guys and put it at a four. I don't know
if time will will change that, but I'm going
to start with an initial ranking of four at this
point. Yeah, the trend. Well, I would say after
my first like my first viewing, I was at a solid
forum because I was working on my written review.
I'm like, all right, I think this is a four.
But I do think watching it a second time was
a big help because I think I was able to I think
the first time was almost there was so much anticipation
and so much going on like I couldn't really.
completely get into everything. But the second
time I did appreciate it, I did like it a little
more. More is at rank within the other superhero
movies. It's tough. I've gone back and forth.
Where do I like the Captain America or this more?
And I think over. I do. I think like the action
movies more just because I think there is the
performances in the film are far superior than
that of the other film. So I'll buck the trend
and give it like a four point five out of five.
Wow. So. It's probably the second highest movie
ever in so far. No, no. Well, review wise, maybe
the third or fourth highest just because I did.
I did enjoy it a great deal. And like I said,
I had so much anticipation with this. I thought
it was going to it was just going to be a disappointment
and it didn't. And I again, I just thought it
was effective and well directed. So, yeah, I'll
go four point five. I'm not scared. So three
fours and four and a half. So that means go see
it if you haven't seen it yet. And help it climb
the ranks of the yearly box office charts here.
And then like Matt said, give us your thoughts
on X -Men Apocalypse. What characters do you
want to see? Do you not want to see returning
characters, new characters? Just thoughts in
general on that. So Dan, I'll let you take the
helm on the rest of the ways people can get in
